EDITORIAL
Modern Bayanihan T
he Philippines became the center of attention as Super Typhoon Yolanda left Leyte and its neighboring provinces in complete havoc, claiming over 6,200 lives while destroying everything on its path. Super Typhoon left marks of massive destructions everywhere: From roofless to completely destroyed houses and establishments, trees and electric posts were uprooted, mountains -once covered with treeswere already visible from afar, electricity and communication signals were completely lost. All that was left for people was hope. The scenario of our school was very much similar. The Technology, Education and Engineering building were roofless and ruined. Our Student center (terminal) became barely recognizable. Laboratory equipment, facilities, and documents also experienced the typhoon’s rage. Everything was either wet or damaged.
6 | AdInfinitum
None of us was able to escape from Yolanda’s wrath. But is that all that Yolanda brought to us? After the typhoon, people were busy rebuilding their houses, picking up any remains that could still be reused. We fell in line to buy whatever resources were available: Food, gasoline, and other necessities. For most unprivileged, lining-up for relief goods distribution has been the best resort. Charging routine of electronic devices was equally harmonious. Relief assistance from International Communities were overflowing. Even private groups and individuals were responsive enough to suffice daily hunger. Together we managed to surpass that survival mode despite the abrupt scarcity of the resources. The best part after that catastrophe was how we responded to that unique challenge. Filipino bayanihan, as they call it, was
commonly depicted through altogether lifting a house. Such spirit still exists today, though not through the same way. In this modern era, it is shown by lifting each other’s spirit and rising up together from a terrible disaster such as that of Yolanda. We call it Modern bayanihan. Remembering the memories from that Super Typhoon gives us all but negative experiences. Yet, as we and our school rise-up from the ground, we should remember that we have survived the greatest disaster in the planet. What more can’t we surpass? Calamities may injure us, deface buildings, and even wipe-out an entire city, but never did it made any dent on us. We fell hard but we rose-up back and move on from that horrible downfall. Our school may fall apart, but never its people. Lig-on ang Ormocanon! Lig-on ang Evsuans!

xcellence has no definite measurement. But if it is to be measured, it should be through achievements. According to Mr. Webster, excellence is “A title of honor given to anyone who excels.” With this, we can conclude that excellence happens when a person achieves superiority against the other from a particular field. But in a university, how do we assess excellence? Most of the time, excellence in education is believed to be achieved only through progressive learning. And that is, by acquiring numerous awards and trophies, one can be considered as excellent. Simply put, we value the students’ dauntless performances and successes. If you are an Evsuan, people readily accept you to flourish on your chosen field. With our

numerous graduates, who would not regard us as such? Yet even before becoming professionals, some Evsuans simply thrive in both academic and extra-curriculars. In academics for instance, many Evsuans participate in various academic-related competitions inside and outside the campus. On February 2013, BSIT students Charlyn Yap and Jun Bryl Gallardo hacked all the way to the first place on the TechnoPop category in the first ever WebCamp competition; A programming and design competition for students all over Eastern Visayas to nurture a real-tech experience. Similarly, on September 2013, Bryanly Jarito, Elmer Piedra and Jun Bryl Gallardo placed 3rd in the Robotics and Web Programming competition for IT students from all over Samar and Leyte. But Evsuans’ triumph does not simply

end in academics. Also in February 2013, the official Student Publication of EVSUOrmoc brought home two major Campus Press awards during the 16th Regional Tertiary Schools Press Conference held in Naval, Biliran. Ad Infinitum – EVSU-Ormoc’s official Magazine – is 2013’s Second Best Magazine in the region. The Observer team also seized the second place in Best Practices Poster. Meanwhile, in the individual categories, our publication staff members outwitted several delegates from various universities in the Region in their respective fields. These included Editorial Writing, Fifth place; Photojournalism, Fourth place; Editorial Cartooning, Fourth place; Desktop Publishing, Second place; and a First place in Investigative Writing. Such a humble outcome from our intent of being the voice of the studentry. Aside from brain-draining competitions, Evsuans are equally commendable for their beauty and wit. We have had three former Tugob Festival Queen Representatives: Ana Ritchel Cosia, Daviseree Osmeña, and Allen Flores, and three candidates for the Bb. Ormoc 2013 search: Korina Panique, Emie Cabintoy, and Efrasun Pereña. Also ranking in our list are our winning candidates in the Mr. and Ms. EVSULYMPICS 2013: Joseph Ray Sabellano, 4th runner-up; Bhrian Kelly Barquez, 3rd runner-up; Korina Panique, 1st runner-up; and Theresa Maquiza who was crowned as Ms. EVSULYMPICS 2013. These are beauties that have all proudly graced the limelight, capturing everyone’s hearts with their undaunted wit and beauty. A proof that EVSU-
Ormoc has got what it takes when it comes to showcasing magnificence. Another gem our school has is our empowering athletes. They represent our school in activities such as EVSULYMPICS, SCUAA and other special events. One notable set of athletes we have is our Sepak Takraw team who placed fifth against 25 other competitors in Region 8 during last year’s Open Tournament in Tacloban City. They also placed as champions in the Regional SCUAA 2012, and EVSULYMPICS 2013. When we speak of undeterred talent, everyone is certainly aware of this bunch’s signature maneuver. With their jaw-dropping stunts and up-to-beat choreography, EVSU-
Ormoc’s official dance troupe, the Glacier Jaguar Pep Squad, has humbly established quite a reputation not just for themselves but for the school as well. Everyone knows that for ten consecutive years, we have held the victor slot in the cheerdance competition during annual intercampus intramurals. We also have been hailed as three-time champion in the annual Tugob Festival dance showdown. Furthermore, we made a name in the Sangyaw festival 2013 in Tacloban City; and gained the champion title in the dance craze competition held in Gaisano Riverside Mall during that very same year. And even if our best dancers have so long become alumni, we still manage to replace them with another horde of flexible, elegant, jaw-dropping newbies that eventually become another set of astounding performers. Being excellent means continually thriving to be an achiever. We should not let deficiencies hinder us from our pursuit of becoming globally competitive. Despite some of our deficiencies, Evsuans surely know how to show consistent evidence of competitiveness in different fields. Be it in academics, sports, cultural, beauty, or schoolbased competitions. The chance of being branded as a student achiever is never too far beyond an Evsuan’s reach. Vince Lombardi once said that “the quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor”. We are a bunch of champs. Acknowledged or not, we just have to continuously strive to be the best in whatever field of interest we choose to nurture.

EVSULYMPICS is an inter-campus
No one exactly knows the exact span of existence of the EVSULYMPICS. Its pioneer years were held at the EVSU-Main campus in Tacloban City. Considering that it is the only campus that has a number of edifices and facilities which makes them capable of accommodating the grand event. One time then, it has been agreed that satellite campuses should also take turns to host the event to promote the spirit of camaraderie in various ways. The hosting of the event is now through round robin stratagem. Last year, it was EVSU-OCC’s turn to entertain and show off the campus to other delegations, being the host of the especial event. Four years from now, EVSU-OCC will again host the Left: With its coordinated movements, the massive number of P.E. student performers indeed turned the heads of every spectator. EVSULYMPICS. Meanwhile, EVSU -Main will be the recipient of the EVSULYMPICS flag which indicates their hosting until it’s our turn again. The athletes, performers and the delegation of every campus are traditionally chosen during their school intramurals’ winners. Since EVSUOCC was the host, the respective committees unanimously agreed to have EVSULYMPICS and the school intramurals celebrated as one. Despite the cancellation of the school intramurals, the selection of athletes was still based upon their competitiveness and performance.
The Preparations Hosting a huge event requires a massive workforce to manipulate the strenuous job. Hence, 18 committees worked hand in hand for the EVSULYMPICS’ preparation. The newly appointed Campus Director Dr. Rolando V. Musca immediately implemented infrastructures to elevate

school’s preparedness. The students were not accustomed seeing such sprouting developments; “EVSULYMPICS nalang unta permi para naay mga projects.” comically expressed one Evsuan. The Administrative officer, Mr. Rustico Badilla further explained that, “the host is responsible for initiating changes and improvements.” In connection with the preparation, six infrastructures were simultaneously built within a month. “With or without the EVSULYMPICS, I still have to come up with these projects.” said the Campus Director during the press conference held prior to the EVSULYMPICS. In addition to infrastructures, the majestic torch bearing EVSU logo blazing on top now perfectly stands linear to the University’s entrance. It is located near the basketball court created by the BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) fifth year students supervised by Engr. Jude Alexes Ramas. Aside from the infrastructure, the mural painting outside the university

Tune in the
Emotional currents
| Dayne Ubay & Ruth Deborah Tojong Illustration | May Cabunilas
Have you ever asked yourself why there are people who are smart in some ways but can be dumb in other ways?
26 | AdInfinitum
F
rom the time we stepped in classes, we were then taught that the intelligence and technical know-how mattered greatly to our success. We must have intellectual ability (that is, we must have high grades) for us to survive. But the rules are changing. Cognitive skills are not enough weapons for excellence. Now, it is not about grades but character. Emotional Intelligence- A new measure of excellence IQ (Intelligence Quotient) refers to the educated mind while EI is to the educated heart but the latter is not the opposite of intelligence but rather the unique combination of both. It means being sensitive to your feelings and of others. Emotional intelligence pertains to an individual’s behavioural mentality. It is the way
an individual responds and adapt to a certain context and situation in accordance to the acceptable behavioural response. In a clear sense, an emotionally intelligent person has the emotional capabilities to cope with the ideas, thoughts, feelings and emotions of other people and being able to settle problems and situations in a desirable manner. It does not merely refer to the intellectual skills of a person but to the application of his learning and knowledge in an appropriate context. Why you should know what is Emotional Intelligence: • Out-of-control emotions can make smart people stupid. • Self-confidence raises aspirations, while self-doubt lowers them.
• Superior performers intentionally seek out feedbacks; they want to hear how others perceive them, realizing that it is a valuable information. • It happens that smiles are the most contagious emotional signal of all, having an almost irresistible power to make other people smile in return. • The ingredients of an effective organization, as we have seen, include a healthy dose of emotional intelligence. To start the journey towards understanding EI, you must know its five elements. The following are:
Emotional Intelligence - A new measure of excellence
1. Self-awareness. The cornerstone of all other areas. It means having the humility to recognize strengths and weaknesses and being aware of your actions and emotions to other people. 2. Self-regulation. It is about staying in control. Here is a nice tip: Write down all of the negatives you want to say, and then rip it up and throw it away. 3. Motivation. The inner desire that pushes an individual into action. It is about reminding yourself why you want to work on your goal. 4. Empathy. The ability to put yourself in another’s situation to be able to know how to respond to others feelings. 5. Social skills. Bow thy ears; avoid dividing your attention to the speaker. Orchestrate open communication to support the team and get them to be excited about a new project. Assessing Emotional Intelligence Literature is probably the first home of Emotional Intelligence. We tend to assess the emotions of the character in a story by how the protagonist reacts in the setting. Consider the Disney’s classic “The Lion King.” Simba is next in line to be the king. But his cunning Uncle Scar plotted a dark plan to kill Muffasa and made Simba think he’s not fitted to be the king. It was the wise Rafiki
who knew how to motivate Simba to redeem the throne. “Remember who you are” were the words of Muffasa to his son, Simba that made him realize what he must do. Literature seems to imitate life and from them, we know how to respond to our real-life situation. When we are overwhelmed by our duties, we often remind ourselves of what Uncle Ben said to his nephew Peter Parker (Spiderman): “With great power comes great responsibility.” We learn of values which define expected emotional responses from literature. In a clear sense, a person who is emotionally intelligent has the drive to control and handle things in harmony and in order, soothingly settles conflicts and manages problems, heartily accepts feedbacks with positivity and empathy and he who is companionable and compatible to work or hang out with. Intelligence cannot be measured by technical knowledge alone. Yes it is true that we need light and understanding but as much as we want to use our heads we sometimes get lost in our emotions and attitudes which may possibly leads us off from the track were on. What is essential is the ability to fully understand and adjust to certain conditions not just intellectually but emotionally. The real essence of intelligence cannot be reflected through the persons mind but in the person’s heart. And that’s the true worth of success- success of the heart. Now, why are there people who are smart in some ways but can be dumb in other ways? Simple, because they do not know what is Emotional Intelligence.

ollege is one of the brightest highlights of our life. In this stage, looking good is like standard
operating procedure. During washdays, EVSU becomes a runway of some sort. Students would revel in the freedom of being able to wear anything they like. Whether one would sashay a colorful trouser or a delicately knitted blouse, students feel it likely express themselves through their styles. Upon roving in the campus, we’ve noticed that there are students who simply stand out during these moments. We asked them for a brief interview on their views on fashion, and these are what we’ve got…
19-year old,
Jessa Mae Ochia
of BSHRT-3 says that “fashion helps you

of BSHRT-3 says that fashion for her “is about expressing
yourself through your style. Through the clothes you wear and how you’re gonna stand on what you are wearing. My style matches my personality. Since I have a jolly personality, I make my style look simple.” Fave place(s) to shop? “Gaisano and ukay-ukayan.
But between the two, I prefer more of the latter. It’s where you can find Ormoc’s finest, after all. The clothes are not cut of the same style than those in department stores.” (Outfit: Black off-shoulder blouse with strap of bra

SSG COLUMN
lot of questions have been in the minds of the observant and inquisitive students. Some are constructive feedbacks, some are repulsive and contemptuous statements, while others are mere allegations. Student bodies such as the Supreme Student Government are established to serve as a training ground for the development of physical, intellectual, moral and social well-being of its members, guided by the following objectives: • To uphold the common interest of the students. • To initiate leadership and student empowerment. • To act as the channel between the students and the school administration. • To protect and promote the dignity, reputation, rights and academic freedom of the students. Despite the fact that the SSG acknowledges every comment and criticism from both the students and teaching staff, we still continuously do our best to take action and respond to all your requests and remarks. As officers,we are aware that part of being a leader is to face various challenges and to take a stand on the decisions made by the body against the interrogations of concerned students and individuals within our sphere of influence. In this issue of Ad Infinitum, the Supreme Student Government office would like to seize the opportunity to provide answers on fre-

quently raised matters involving the office and its officers. The SSG is grateful to those who raised inquiries in such appropriate manner, for only then can we be able to justify our actions and decisions. To start with, let us discuss one of the most misunderstood matter: The P50.00 fine for those who were not able to vote during the SSG election last February 15, 2013. The SSG election is an important event where students exercise their right to elect their desired leader that will execute platforms towards the betterment of the entire studentry. Voting is both a right and a responsibility: which is why all classes are officially suspended every SSG Election day. It proves that this activity is highly acknowledged by the school administration in consideration to the right of the students to choose their instrumental leaders. Casting a vote won’t take a whole day but rather just a few minutes. But sad to say, some students are neglecting -or even worse- ignoring the election. I once overheard students chatting on the corridor “dah, diman ta madato ug moapil ta ana”, “kapoy ug linya oi may’g ila ta pa isnakon, may’pag mag poyu”replied the other one. It’s quite disturbing that these were the perception of some of our schoolmates, and so they chose not to take part of the election process. Recognizing that this problem arises every election, the executive and legislative body came up with a decision to collect Php50.00
as fine for students who failed to vote during SSG election. And similar to any other money matters, this mandate was made legal under the RESOLUTION NO.3 Series 2013 which was approved unanimously on the 7th day of January 2013 at EVSU-OCC, signed by the former Campus Director Dr. Lilian D. Estorninos. The collection was used as a fund for office’ expenses such as photocopying, printing of resolutions and announcements, purchase of receipts for SSG’s collection, and snacks during meetings and assemblies of the SSG and organization officers. This implementation is intended to promote discipline among the students and not for personal interest of whomever. Nonetheless, an exception was granted to few students who were not able to cast their votes because they were either (1) an athlete during the last EVSU Inter-collegiate tournament 2013 or (2) they were not yet on the master list of enrolled students because they were not done with their enrollment process yet. Another equally significant issue is this year’s registration and renewal process of organizations. The student organizations’ officers have been eager to hear the reasons behind its strict implementation. The SSG is simply doing its job to ensure accountability of the organizations especially when it comes to money matters. In effect, financial statement, documentations in a form of letter, pictures or
videos of the organizations’ activity, receipts of expenses, organizational chart and complete list of officers and advisers are duly required for transparency purposes. Also, there has been a question “Did we (SSG officers) ask the opinions of the students before choosing the theme for this year’s acquaintance party?” Well, yes we did. Mind you fellow students that in every decision that the SSG make such as that of acquaintance party, freshmen orientation, EVSULYMPICS and any other school activities, it sees to it that an agreement was made among the entire course-related organization and fraternities/ sororities presidents. Any announcement posted that bears the signatures of the head of the student affairs and the SSG president has been into consensus first. All the concerns pertaining to the acquaintance party like the food, venue, assembly time, gate designations and even the attire are therefore not our personal choice. With regards to the party itself, it might be boring for some, but an enjoying experience for most. We would like everyone to know that we, the officers, did our best to provide quality service and to meet every expectation but still, as the saying goes, “nobody is perfect”. Hindrances to its success arose even though we conducted a series of meetings to thoroughly plan everything before setting up that major event. We had sacrificed and gave up our enjoyment on the party just to serve the students. But still our efforts and sacrifices weren’t good enough for some. Sometimes, due to much expectations, we no longer notice and appreciate the simple things, we consider it typical for someone to do something for us. We ignore or keep on asking how and why it turned out to be a mess. Another thing,in every meeting with the organization and fraternities/sororities presidents, all we ought to do is facilitate and introduce the options to the body and leave the decision unto them. It will then followed by soliciting suggestions from them. The SSG welcomes all suggestions and comments. However, the SSG reserves the right to discuss
it among the officers first before formulating final decision which should have favorable outcome to the majority of the Evsuans. You elected your organization officers to serve as the channel between you and the student body, to relay unto us your concerns so that we may be able to do something about it. But just to make sure your concerns reaches us, we encourage you to personally visit the SSG office to receive immediate response directly from us. We cannot recognize your desires unless you speak it out. The Supreme Student Government aims to protect the rights and common interests of the students. Therefore, we cannot always pursue the interest of the few as we avoid compromising the thousands’ welfare. We are all in the same institution. We are all recognized as “taga EVSU” through our uniform. We are even proud to acknowledge that we are Evsuans when it comes to good news. So strengthen us with your support, understanding and constructive criticisms to where you want us to be better and improve further. Bashing and measuring the capabilities of the officers will do no good for the Student Government and to the school. Selfish is he who only thinks and believe in himself and in what he heard from others. We should help each other and not be selfish. Our concern is that, instead of striking the SSG, why not be useful to your fellow students and to the school? Instead of enumerating our deficiency, why not at least acknowledge the people who worked and gave their selves fully in service. We, the SSG officers are doing our tasks to meet our duties and your expectations, we will strive to serve you better, however your full cooperation and support are needed in order to make our goals possible to achieve. Also, EVSULYMPICS 2013 was a remarkable achievement for the Ormoc Evsuans. Everything wouldn’t be possible without the cooperation and effort of everyone; from the Campus Director, Faculty and Staff, SPO, SSG, marshals, ROTC, Student leaders, various organizations to the security guards, campus maintenance and other working committees.
Although some inevitable incidents occurred during the event, we are still grateful that it was concluded successfully. Criticisms during the event were taken as benchmark for further progress and development. We might be able to ignore things around us that we must be grateful of because of expecting things beyond our capabilities and availability of resources. We hope we can still bring betterment not just to the EVSUOCC but also to ourselves as an individual. In behalf of the studentry, we express our heartfelt gratitude to the concerned individuals especially to our Campus Director and the rest of working committee who made it possible to pursue the construction of our beneficial structures (stage, basketball court, drainage). And to you as a part of the EVSUOCC family, thank you for contributing to the success of the EVSULYMPICS 2013, we might fail to mention your name here but still you’re a vital part of the achievement of the school. CONGRATULATIONS for a job well done! Thank you for all your support, assistance and cooperation in all our school activities. We wouldn’t be in our respective positions without that. We extend our gratitude to you, our fellow students for your untiring comments and humble suggestions, to the officers and members of the course-related organizations and fraternities/sororities for their support and enthusiasm to be of help anytime we are in need. And of course to our School Publications Office who upholds similar goals with us in protecting the welfare of the studentry. In behalf of the entire Supreme Student Government officers for the school year 2013-2014, we are looking forward for greater understanding and good judgement to reign in your hearts and mind, making each one able to see and recognize not just the lapses and shortcomings but also the efforts that the student bodies exerts to serve you better. Let’s work together in order to achieve desirable outputs in the long run. Always do your best, be productive and make a difference.

VOXPOP Months after Yolanda, victims waited for the day things would go back to normal. Throughout the hard times, there is always a golden lesson that we ought to bear for the rest of our lives. Most, if not all of us, surely have pondered into something. Here are some of the lessons learned by the Evsuans after the typhoon:
Nakat-on ko nga dili jud diay importante ang mga butang kay mawala ra man diay. Then naka realize ko na dapat diay motabang sa ubang tao kay muabot ang panahon nga kita nay manginahanglan og tabang. Then mas importante pud ang mga bata unahon pagtabang sa panahon sa kalisod.
With Yolanda’s aftermath, I am motivated to help in rebuilding our school. Hand in hand, we can start by improving its cleanliness.
- Ms. Jaime, BT-Hele
- Romeo Ruel Paras, BSED Math
Nah dili angay ibaliwala ang tanang matang sa bagyo bisan og signal #1 lang. Mangandam sad sama sa pagkaon og uban pang mga kinahanlanon kay mahal naman gud paghuman sa mga katalagman.
I learned to value the people around me such as my family. I also learned to fetch water and to survive with fewer resources and most importantly, do not count what is lost but cherish what is left and plan what to gain in the future.
- Cyrus Rodriguez, BSED IB
-Jessica Tulin, BT-Hele-III
Bisag unsay mahitabo dili jud kalimtan ang pagsalig sa Ginoo then kinahanlan mangandam spiritually para inig abot sa panahon sa paghukom, andam nga moatubang.
- Yhan’z
I learned to be grateful to God and I learned that I am not in the position to murmur because what happened was God’s will. It was His plan. I also learned not to value much earthly possessions for they won’t last.
- Anthsz, BT-Hele
Dili nato dapat kalimtan ang Ginoo. Kadto nga bagyo kay wake-up call na to siya nato kay ang mga tao karun gibaliwala nalang ang Ginoo.
Nakakat-on ko na bisan unsa man ta ka hopeless o down sa panahon sa mga katalagman, dili gyud gihapon ta dapat mawad-an og paglaom og pagsalig sa Diyos.
- Jumelyn Omega, BSHRT-ll
- Roxanne Bote, BT-HELE-lll
I have learned to live life to the fullest because we don’t know that one day there will be unexpected events that can happen.
Mag prepare jud before mahitabo ang bagyo aron dili magkalisod og magkalisang kung unsay angay buhaton during bagyo.

"What is the greatest lesson you have learned after Super Typhoon Yolanda?" I realized that Typhoon Yolanda was a blessing in disguise because bond between family members became stronger. I also learned how to appreciate and give importance to the simplest things in life.
Nothing in this world is permanent, may it be gadgets, properties or even lives. For in just one click, all may be lost.

Ako na appreciate ang kahayag. Dati, e-take for granted ra ang tubig og kurente pero karun magtipid na. Then maayo jud nga nay kwarta nga hiposan kay in case naay kalamidad nya magmahal ang presyo sa mga palaliton naay ikapalit. Then magtiyaga2x sa mga linya-linya. Then maayo jud ready always. Faith in God bisan unsa kalisod makaya ra jud.
I learn to value life more than anything. Don’t be materialistic but instead value the gift of life that God gave us.
