The Odd Fray Journal: Issue One

Page 1

Editor's Note Over the past two years photography has taken over my life, literally. It's all I think about, it's all I work towards. I've always loved fashion and magazines and the whole atmosphere that surrounds that space. Image making has always been something I have been interested in, this coupled with my love for fashion led to me deciding to create this publication. The aim for The Odd Fray Journal is to create a visually stimulating body of work but also discuss topics that I find interesting, it's a gateway into the things I think about, a journal for public consumption.

In this is issue I sit down with Bulangizi to discuss her pursing a law career, being a blogger and whether it is really possible for a corporate career and a creative one to coexist. I also have a chat with Lula about being an independent brand owner, what drives her creativity and whether she thinks there will come a time when women no longer have gender as a hurdle. I share with you my music picks in a beautifully female led playlist and a photo set that packs a pink punch.

What made you study law?

Pursuing a degree in law really wasn't at the top of my list in secondary school, mostly because of the stories I had heard about law being really bulky. My academic enjoyment leaned more towards the sciences anyway so I barely considered law. My parents took notice of the subjects I was good at throughout the course of the 5 years of secondary school and saw that my strength lay in those sub jects that require one to read and remember very well, you know, history, lit erature in Engl ish, religious education and the like. That's how I got thrown into law school a few months after grade 12.

What got you into blogging?

I've always had an interest in English (I actually wanted to be a writer at some point) primarily because it's the language I speak the most and I enjoy communicating my thoughts through writing more than I do through audio or visual work so, starting a blog felt like the ideal creative channel for me.

How do juggle/balance the two?

Juggling being a blogger and law student/lawyer so far involves the creation and maintenance of a balance between creative time and academic time. Of course there have been times when one interest has outweighed the other but I've l earned the importance of making time for one without neglecting the other.

How do you handle creative block?

In the course of the last 3 years I've had a few run-ins with creative block and almost each time I do, unfortunatel y, thoughts about quitting frequent my mind but I've found that taking time out to recharge or do something dif ferent from the ordinary content creating process is a good way to get my mind active again.
