HOLMES COUNTY ARTS CENTER Project Type: Arts Center Location: Millersburg, OH Instructor: Sandhya Kochar Autumn 2016 The Holmes County Arts Center is located in the countryside, surrounded by a small community and splendid view of the woodlands. In its setting, the project is bold. Its defined geometries are juxtaposed against nature, even as the laminated form ties the project to the contours of the landscape. Thus, both the interior and exterior spaces are laminated to reflect the topography. As a result, the movement of people is regulated by the various ratios of steps, created through lamination. The origin of form comes from a collage of artificial patterns that were exhibited in the existing arts center.

JESSE OWENS RECREATION CENTER Project Type: University Gym Location: Columbus, OH Instructor: Tom Lewis Autumn 2016 The Jesse Owens Recreation Center embodies an athletic icon, and prioritizes convenient circulation and a clearly distributed program through its metamorphosis from a basic icon to an architectural expression. Diagrams show this transformation as well as the spatial division and structural existence of the project. Triangulated extrusions express the liveliness of athletes who will utilize the space: Sharp angles are used to evoke energy and motion. The triangulated polysurface also references the obstacles endured by a young Jesse Owens, as well as his own metamorphosis into a commemorated icon.

US Embassy in Mexico Project Type: Government Office Location: Mexico City, Mexico Instructor: Karen Lewis Autumn 2017 As the face of the United States, an embassy represents the relationships, negotiations, and cultural communications between the US and other countries. Instead of presenting an intimidating wall or fortress on the border, the Embassy in Mexico City provides a common ground for delegates and citizens of both nations to resolve conflicts and maintain openness. The nested form symbolizes the protection and cultivation of diplomatic relations and cultural expression. The vertical geometries of the building conflicts with the organic pathways of the site, before one sloping curve connects the two. The tensions within the Embassy are relieved, as are those between two nations.

DOUBLE HOUSE Project Type: Urban Housing Duplex Location: Hong Kong, China Instructor: Zachary Snyder Autumn 2015 Today, efficient urban housing has become a large social issue. By not utilizing the spaces between existing buildings, these alleys fall into disuse, accrue waste, and may foster crime. By integrating these spaces into housing projects, the insular gaps may instead reinforce the communication between neighbors. To introduce sunlight while maintaining privacy, private spaces are levitated from the ground and tilted upwards, punctuated with skylights. The duplex’s two units are connected by a shared entryway and visual pathways connecting two gardens. Nonetheless, differences in elevation between the private space of two units ensures privacy.

AEROPOLIS Project Type: Flying City Instructor: Galo Canizares Spring 2017 This project responds to the physical, social, and environmental cues of airborne travel to develop a futuristic living community for a group of “Nomads”. Three existing projects (Cloud Cities, Supersurface, and Orbit City) were selected for precedent studies to explore the dynamics of a roving community. The presentation board recorded the timeline of Nomadic history, cultural evolution, and their reactions toward present high-tech societies. Each elongated Aeropolis capsule draws inspiration from rocket boosters and hot air balloons, together which perfect the balancing act of levitation, unhindered mobility, and sustainability through the use of renewable energy. DESTRUCTIVE TOMB Competition: “Arch Out Loud Project: Nuclear Landmarker Instructor: Sandhya Kochar Nuclear waste is known for its long half-life and extreme volatility, which poses dangers for up to 10,000 years. As a nuclear landmarker, Destructive Tomb seeks to communicate with future generations the dangers of this site in order to deter unwanted interference, while preserving the histories of our current era. In combining the organization of modern societies and the instability of the underground environment, a grid containing modern icons is superimposed upon a section. Hatching is used to represent boundaries, color as surface, and intersection points of the grid create depth and elevational differences. Over the course of millenia, even these monuments will be eroded and directed into the sunken center of the tomb. 17

Jeff the Giant Sloth is the full skeleton of a Jefferson’s Ground Sloth, found in Ohio in 1890. In recognition of Jeff’s fame and elderly status, Ohio State University has decided to relocate Jeff to his own sanctuary. This dematerialized building--containing a Skeleton within the skeleton--lets visitors enjoy the experience of space which evolves from compression to expansion.

SPRING 2017

To enhance one’s understanding of concrete, this project utilizes the material to create a visual centerpiece. The vertically stacked masses explore the texture and weight of concrete, and evenly distribute the mass to a pyrimidal base.
