A word from the publisher
SET IN STONE When Louie, Zach, and I started The Osider Magazine, we knew that Oceanside was in dire need of a new voice to share all of the great things happening here. We set out to be that voice for our community, and with all the different little pieces that make up our special city—it’s been a lot of work, but also very rewarding on a personal level. As a group, we’ve felt great about the reader response and it’s given us a solid sense of worth from our city. For any publisher, that kind of support’s all anyone could ever ask for, so—thank you! We recently received news that Mayor Jim Wood and The City of Oceanside wanted to officially recognize The Osider for our positive display of our fine city. We gladly accepted. What a great honor it is to be recognized for exceptional writing, superior photography, and supporting a place that we are so grateful for living in. We’ll continue to shout the praises of Oceanside from the mountaintop with great pride for many years to come. With that said, this issue has plenty of things to grab your attention—starting with a guide to local craft beer locations, a holiday gift guide, and all the great columns and features you’re accustomed to reading. We are truly blessed. Thank you for supporting The Osider.

Aaron schmidt After moving from Florida to North County in the mid 90s while he was still a teenager, Aaron immediately felt at home in South Oceanside. He’s enjoyed surfing and skateboarding his entire life—the punchy Oside beachbreaks and great skate terrain here made his choice to stay pretty easy. After a few years of working odd jobs, he finally got his chance to work in the action sports industry. He got hired at TransWorld Media when they were located in the valley on Airport Road in Oceanside. That building is where it all began for him and his editorial future. In 1999, Aaron was influential in the launch of TransWorld SURF Magazine and eventually became its Managing Editor. After a few years at TWSURF, he then began working as an editor for TransWorld SKATEboarding Mag azine until the mid 2000s. After a few different gigs over the years writing freelance for different magazines like Thrasher, XXL, Surfing Magazine, FHM, and a few others, Aaron has found his niche yet again and editorially directs The Osider. These days, he can usually be found at the beach with his girlfriend Danyel and his two boys, Avery and Kagan.
There’s been plenty of surf this past fall in Oceanside—thanks to all the hurricane swells. Here’s Aaron navigating his way through the shorebreak at The Rock last October.
Eric Klier Contributing Writer
Born and raised in North County, Eric has surfed and skateboarded his whole life. He loves the ocean and delicious craft beer. Now that he’s bartending in Oceanside, it’s opened his eyes to all the delicious beer North County offers and he’s been taking full advantage of that. Eric’s a restaurateur and social butterfly who loves what’s happening in Oceanside. If he’s not in the ocean or at the local skatepark, he can usually be found belly up at a local restaurant or bar.
Brooks Fritz Contributing Photographer
Elizabeth Schwartze
When not contributing to his hometown mag azine, The Osider, Brooks can usually be found wandering the streets of Oceanside on his skateboard in search of the next best slappy or you can find him fishing at one of the infamous local watering holes. Brooks also spends his time photographing pro skateboarders and working on his company—Bassturd. It’s a skateboard/fishing company that’s been keeping him very busy. He’s a beer aficionado and all-around great human. If you see him around town—buy him a beer. Maybe you’ll get a history lesson from a true local. For more on what Brooks does, give him a follow on Instagram: @fritz_foto @bassturdco
Elizabeth Schwartze is a local resident who loves living in the eclectic coastal city of Oceanside with her husband, two children, and boxer. From her hometown of Fallbrook, Elizabeth enjoyed Oceanside beaches growing up and is stoked to be a contributing writer for The Osider Magazine and write stories about one of her favorite places—Oceanside, CA! The Schwartze family can often be found at Oceanside Harbor, or you can follow their travels at: www.thecaliforniafamilyadventures.com

Oceanside’s finest Palmquist Elementary School garden reaps bushels of benefits words: Promise yee
Photos: zach cordner
The impact of the Palmquist Elementary School organic garden goes way beyond its quarteracre size. The garden serves as a learning lab, local food source, and integral part of Oceanside’s zero waste efforts. Third grade teacher Mark Wagner heads current gardening efforts. He plots out space for each grade level, oversees gardening schedules, and heads a student garden club. Wagner said the school garden is ripe with learning opportunities. Science, math, and history lessons regularly take place between rows of vegetables. An aquaponics system is set up at the garden koi pond to teach students the cyclic process of how plants re-oxygenate water for fish, and how fish add fertilizer to the water for plants. In the fall, fourth grade students plant beans, squash, and corn together into one single hole. Wagner said the planting method is a Native American farming practice known as “three sisters.” Each plant nutritionally benefits the others. In addition to experiential lessons, the robust garden is utilized as a dependable food source. Several garden plots are planted and managed by the school garden club. Harvested produce is sold to the school cafeteria, and also at a produce stand set up in front of the school. The cafeteria buys garden produce at half the going market price, and uses the fresh fruits and veggies in school lunches. Cafeteria manager Mary Rearick said students recognize food they helped grow—it encourages them to try new foods and eat healthier. “Students are really excited to be part of it,” Rearick said. “It’s a great way to get them to eat fruits and vegetables. They take ownership.” Garden produce is so reliable and abundant that the cafeteria staff asks the garden club to plant specific vegetables to use in upcoming menus. Last season’s harvest included 100 pounds of cabbage and 120 pounds of tomatoes. Produce beyond cafeteria needs is sold to other schools in the Oceanside Unified School District or at the school produce
stand. Wagner said fruit and vegetable sales serve as math lessons for students, and help financially sustain the garden. Local restaurants have also inquired about buying school grown produce. Wagner said student gardeners might be able to meet that demand in the future. The organic garden is also part of the school district and city zero waste program. Students sort lunch waste that can be composted, manage garden compost bins, and use the compost to grow food that’s harvested and used in school lunches. Jenna Roripaugh, city environmental specialist, said the garden teaches students lifelong lessons in sustainability and stewardship.

Oceanside’s finest Coach Carroll A Legacy In The Making words: desiree Astorga
Photo: zach cordner
Character, Integrity, and Leadership—three words that are most referenced “Coach Carroll had a big influence when talking about Coach John Carroll. He’s brought more than football on my football career. If he never championships to Oceanside. On the field you can see it, you can feel it, and discovered me, I would’ve never had then you can see it again in the players’ eyes. What has transpired on the field is like a family—keeping the media at a football career at all. He has become bay and humility integrated. Coach Carroll is one of the special ones, and more than just a coach to me, but you’d know that if you’ve ever met him. The program has been a source of also a role model. The passion he power, of motivation, of inspiration, and yet it’s always just that—a team, and a family that infiltrates into the community. displays for the game and his players Last year, prayers were plentiful for the man whom this community is admirable. I hope that one day I can embraces. There was buzzing gratitude and excitement when he was back be as passionate as him. He’s a great on the field for scrimmages, as Coach was in his place. coach and a great man.” HC Carroll has led the Pirates to championship football since his powerhouse program began in 1989. With a record of 234 wins, 74 losses, and 6 ties; add the 6-0 start to the 2014 season, a record dozen CIF Titles, 25 —Roberto Wallace, consecutive playoff appearances—then throw in 2007 and 2009 State former NFL wide receiver Championships, and you’re just now starting to get the picture. Oceanside’s got pride, bleeds green, has history, and will have a new stadium name—Simcox Field at John Carroll Stadium. There’ve been some amazing coaches in San Diego football, but none can match Coach Carroll’s record or the magic that happens on and off the field at Oceanside High. From academic staff meetings, school banquets to Friday night lights or daily practices, Coach Carroll brings something special—not only in playbooks or schemes, but he’s also given the gift of integrity, character, and respect (along with humility). That’s something that can’t be taught in a classroom, but shown only through example. He’s a true leader and an amazing mentor—influencing the lives of all that he touches. Thank you, Coach Carroll! Hidden Gem Don and Stacy in the studio hard at work on their Junior Seau memorial mosaic.
Don Myers Stained Glass And Mosaic Studio words: Eric Klier
Photos: zach cordner
You may not picture The Beatles, Bob Marley, and The Pink Panther when thinking about stained glass, but Don Myers has brought a modern touch to a classic fine art. When walking into his shop on Coast Highway, you’re immediately overwhelmed with color and light. Don has been working with glass for over 30 years and his experience shows in his clean lines and patience with intricate mosaics. You will be blown away at the size and detail in his portraits and landscapes. Don’s artwork is sprinkled through Oceanside business such as Jennie’s cafe and Local Tap House. After visiting him and recognizing his style, you’ll be amazed at how many pieces of his stained glass art pieces are around town. Moving here in the early 80s, his relationship with the community has grown such that he’s now teaching classes to the public and also to local schools. When talking about teaching, his eyes light up and his passion for art (and especially the children he teaches) is clearly evident. He’s set up a program with the school where the kid’s art is shown and sold, with all proceeds going back to the school arts program. Don Myers and Stacy Ceeburge are sharing with the community by teaching our youth and brightening up the streets of Oceanside with their amazing stained glass artwork. Whether it’s repairing an antique or making a giant Junior Seau mosaic for a restaurant in Hawaii, Don’s professionalism and passion shine through. It’s no wonder why people all Don Myers Stained Glass over Southern California come to take his classes and and Mosaic Studio trust him with their treasured art possessions to get 1025 South Coast Highway repaired. Weekend Getaway At Harrah’s Resort Southern California words: Alicia Stone
Chances are, in your group of friends, there’re two perspectives on the “casino” experience—some of you dislike it and others salivate at the slightest sound of a slot machine. So in order to get your fix, you need to find one or two like-minded individuals and plan your weekend getaway accordingly. But as everyone knows, the five-hour drive to Vegas is not as glamorous or spontaneous as it seems when your adventure “light–bulb” goes off. So imagine my surprise when I called my friend Angel, mentioned an errant thought of a casino night, and a week later—we were walking into a beautiful lobby complete with the sound of slot machines, the cool breeze of the outdoor pool, the smell of Starbuck’s coffee, and a sign with an arrow reading, “The Spa.” Basically, Harrah’s Resort Southern California had me at “Hello.” Having grown up in Oceanside, I’ve driven to Vegas, Palm Springs, and other local casinos many times, and the drive to Harrah’s was by far the easiest. In just 40 minutes, we had sailed through the Valet entrance, doors were opened, bags were out, and we had keys in hand. A few minutes later, we were sipping cocktails on a gorgeous balcony complete with lounge chairs, outdoor dining table, and stunning views of blue skies slipping behind amber mountains. Our suite was modern, impeccably cleaned, and had everything you’d expect from a five-star hotel. We enjoyed an exceptional lobster dinner at restaurant Fiore, played some really fun slot machines, and ordered nightcaps at Spiked—the casual cocktail lounge that surrounds the gaming area. In the morning, we arrived at The Spa for our scheduled treatments and were treated like royalty. The waiting area was elegant, the therapists were professional, the amenities luxurious, and the massages were heavenly. After all of this, we still had time to enjoy the pool! We settled into a queen-sized lounger, ordered lunch, and then watched The Chargers play on a huge outdoor screen. Looking around at the poolside cabanas and kid-friendly lazy river, we immediately began planning our next trip. I recommend Harrah’s for all types of getaways: gaming, romance, parties, or family vacations. And if you see Derek at Spiked, Stella at Dive, or Yesenia and Jackie at The Spa, please tell them The Osider sent you and we’ll be seeing them again very soon—and we may even bring those other friends. Things You Didn’t Know About Hill Street By Kristi Hawthorne Photos: courtesy of Oceanside Historical Society
San Diego County has been touted as the “birthplace” of California’s highway system, and Oceanside has played an important role in the history of the Coast Highway—also known as Highway 101. Hill Street was more than just our “main street” —it was also a direct route and the “Gateway to San Diego County” from the north, bringing much needed commerce from Orange and Los Angeles Counties, as well as tourists and the traveling public.
Motorcyclists fuel up at the first gas station on Hill Street, circa 1916.
Things You Didn’t Know About Hill Street
1 Hill Street was not always the main thoroughfare through town. Cleveland and Second Street (now Mission Avenue) denoted the main business district, and Tremont Street was the route used traveling north of town. By 1909, the Southern California Automobile Club officially changed the route through Oceanside as “straight through town along Hill Street.”

The Palms Hotel located on the 400 block of North Hill Street was built in 1886. It was the first and only hotel on Hill Street for years until the Las Flores was built, and then later the Keisker Hotel (now the Dolphin Hotel) was built in 1927.
Palm trees were planted along Hill Street as early as 1894 under the direction of Thomas Exton, a local businessman and city councilmember. Palms have been planted and replanted over the years with the efforts of the city council and the business district.
The first gas pump was installed for the public in front of Edgar Chanreaux’s home on the 100 block of North Hill Street in about 1913. Later that year, the Mission Garage was built on the 200 block of North Hill Street resembling the Mission San Luis Rey. Other garages (predecessors to service stations) included the Oceanside Garage, the Hill Street, and Merrill’s Garage. Business was brisk but competitive seeking to attract motorists traveling through Oceanside.
In 1917, the Highway Commission agreed to pay for paving oneand-a half miles of Hill Street to be used as a State Highway if the city would improve the remainder. In 1918, the work was completed from North Oceanside to Wisconsin Avenue and eventually designated as Highway 101.

In 1930, Oceanside’s one and only directional “traffic light” was removed from the intersection of Second and Hill Street at the request of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. It was causing too many accidents.
Bing Crosby was fined $35 for speeding on Hill Street through Oceanside in 1936. Traffic officer Guy Woodward was not apparently star-struck when he clocked the famous crooner doing 55 miles an hour in a 25 mile an hour zone and issued him a ticket.
In 1961, Hill Street was widened to four lanes. One year later, nearly 90 palms trees were replanted on Hill Street after the street was widened. Before Car Country Carlsbad, nearly every conceivable new car dealership was located on Hill Street—including Weseloh Chevrolet, Rorick Buick, Dixon Ford, and more.
In 1996, the City Council approved changing the name of Hill Street and all of the numbered streets (First, Third, Fourth, etc.). Hill Street became “Coast Highway,” but locals still prefer to call it “Hill Street.”
In 1998, Highway 101 was designated a historical route, getting recognition similar to famed Route 66. So whether you call it Hill Street, Coast Highway, or Highway 101—it’s a well-traveled road with a rich history.

magine – your baby has just come into the world, but all too soon. She’s 14 weeks premature, the doctors tell you, and she only weighs one pound. Her tiny lungs are underdeveloped, and you’ll barely have a chance to hold her before she’s placed under 24/7 care in the neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU.
Ana and Lizbeth, 4 months old
That was reality for Ana and her baby, Lizbeth. Born at Tri-City Medical Center on Feb. 6, 2014, Ana’s baby girl weighed just slightly more than a role of quarters when she was born. In order to give her a fighting chance, Lizbeth was immediately moved to Tri-City’s Level III NICU, the only one of its kind in Osider 36
San Diego’s North County. For five months, Lizbeth was confined to an incubator and given round-theclock treatment, never once able to go home. Today, Lizbeth is a happy and healthy nine-monthold, and Ana is ecstatic to have her beautiful little
girl with her each day. Until June, beyond Ana’s daily visits with Lizbeth, the only link to her was through the NICU’s NicView camera systems. Funded through Tri-City Hospital Foundation, the philanthropic partner of Tri-City Medical Center, this innovative tool allows families to connect with their babies anytime, from anywhere. Since its implementation in Dec. 2012, NicView has given hundreds of families in 26 countries around the world the chance to bond with their newest additions. Staffers report that 99% of families use the service.
Lizbeth, 1 month old
Even with close to 600 babies cared for each year, Tri-City’s NICU staff works to ensure each family is able to feel close to their little ones. Every day, nurses will write notes to babies’ families with updates on how they’re doing and what progress they’ve made to display via NicView.
Lizbeth, 2.5 months old
Today, Lizbeth is thriving and safely at home with Mom
But with tens of thousands of patients to help each year, the Foundation’s reach doesn’t stop at the NICU…

Since 1964, Tri-City Hospital Foundation has served patients living in the North County community. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Foundation has provided more than $44 million in grants to the hospital, enabling some of its most mission-critical facilities and services in surgery, women’s health, the NICU, the Emergency Department and more.
North County Healthcare: Better Together
History at-a-Glance
A community is only as good as its members, and Tri-City Hospital Foundation is fortunate enough to have an incredible support system of people who feel the same way. From serving on planning committees to making a donation, the Foundation offers a number of opportunities to get involved, give back and make a difference close to home. Ways to give include:
1960s: Tri-City Hospital opened on July 16, 1961 with 42 doctors and 87 beds. By Oct. 1964, an expansion was imminent, and Friends of Tri-City Hospital – the organization that would later become Tri-City Hospital Foundation – formed to fundraise.
1970s: Tri-City Hospital Foundation helped facilitate updates including a helipad, a cardiopulmonary lab, more surgical suites and the addition of 144 beds
1980s: The Foundation aided construction including a four-story
wing and facilities remodel. In 1985, Tri-City Hospital changed to Tri-City Medical Center to reflect its comprehensive service offerings and regional scope. The Foundation then contributed to a modern Emergency Department, a NICU and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center.
1990s: The Foundation made another Emergency Department
expansion, a new outpatient surgery center, a Stroke Screening Community Outreach Program and the Beatrice Riggs French Women’s Center possible
2000s: Focusing on providing the community with more state-of-the-
art services, the Foundation contributed to the inception of the Cardiac Wellness Center, the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, the Edgar & Jo Anne Jones Women’s Diagnostic Center and the John S. Middlekauff Outpatient Radiology Center. The Emergency Department and NICU also saw updates. In fiscal year 2014 alone, the Foundation granted over a million dollars toward updating equipment and patient offerings in outpatient, surgery and emergency divisions. Areas of focus included new Cardiac Ablation equipment, which will enhance physicians’ ability to both diagnose and effectively treat a number of cardiac conditions at Tri-City’s awardwinning Cardiovascular Health Institute, and an all-new Mental Health Crisis Stabilization Unit in the Tri-City Emergency Department. The first of its kind in San Diego County, this innovative unit will allow physicians to deliver targeted care to patients facing psychiatric crises in a private environment, protecting the safety of all patients and staff at one of the county’s busiest Emergency Departments.

Apotheque Day spa in Oceanside The only way to truly appreciate the distinctiveness of Apotheque—described as a state-of-the-art urban day spa for men and women—is to spend some time there. Housed in the Oceanside historical “Bunker” building, the 4,400 square-foot facility offers a wide array of services and was originally built in 1886. These include massages, facials, acupuncture sessions, hair and nail services, yoga and Pilate’s classes, a weight-loss clinic, fragrance blending bar, and the Succulent Café serving coffee, tea, and other beverages. The Succulent Café itself is a place of amazement. One could sit there for hours smelling the fresh sea air and taking in the beautifully arranged and exhibited plants. “Oceanside is a jewel, and of all the places I could spend my time in the water and on the beach—I choose Oceanside. I love it!” said owner Michelle Bartok in regards to why she chose her location for her spa. She bought the building in 2009 and remodeled it as a “Lifestyle Spa” with beauty and comfort in mind. The treatment rooms are large and uniquely decorated with antique furnishings. The attention to detail in each space is phenomenal. The Lifestyle Spa is a culmination of 28 years of formulating products for spas and resorts worldwide,” said Michelle. The retail boutique show cases many different products that are based on the use of energy and sustainability and all of the containers are recyclable. There’re also distinctive gifts and handmade jewelry displayed throughout the space. She sponsors many groups including The Outrigger Club, Surf Museum, Oceanside Police, Wounded Warriors, The Live Well Project, Hera Hub, and also local elementary schools. Of all the beach towns Michelle could’ve chosen to open such a generous source for information and individually blended organic products— we’re truly lucky she chose Oceanside.

were kind of like, “Let’s move to Temecula and open a store or let’s go to Oceanside.” He wasn’t backing Oceanside and he didn’t want to open one in Temecula, either, so I got another buddy of mine and opened one in Oceanside. I then ended up buying my friend out within the first year. I was on Wisconsin for a little over four years and then moved over here to our new location. Why Oceanside? There’s something about Oceanside that’s just dope. It’s by the beach but it’s not at all like Carlsbad or Encinitas. The people are real out here. This was the spot.
Grandeur words: Aaron schmidt

Grandeur is one of North County’s premier skate shops and it’s definitely easy to see why—Grandeur carries some of the best brands in the biz. Brands like HUF, JSLV, and DGK, among others. The store is literally adorned with all the latest and greatest in exclusive, hard-to-find streetwear and footwear. Their skate section is also on point with all the major board brands represented and their skate team is one of the area’s best. The following is an inter view with Grandeur’s owner, Jason Houk. Read on to learn the history of Grandeur and how it all came to be. Do you know the history of the build ing you’re in? It used to be a bar called The Nor mandy. We’re located in the old card room area. When did you start Grandeur? This is the second location. I first opened Grandeur in 2006 on Wis consin Street. I was running a shop with a buddy of mine in Escondido at the time and I just had to get out of there. I lived here and he lived in Temecula. We
How involved are you guys in the community? We used to do a lot. We haven’t done as many lately but at least a few times a year we’ll go to one of the local skateparks and do a Skate Day. We’ll hand out a bunch of product to any kid who’s skating and having a good time. It’s not a contest or anything like that. I mean, it doesn’t matter if you’re just learning how to drop into the ramp and you drop in, I’ll hook you up with a t-shirt or board—whatever we’re offering at the time. So you guys also do your own private label. How are you on the Grandeur brand and what do you see happening with it in the future? With the Grandeur brand, we make t-shirts, hats, sweat shirts, jackets, socks, keychains, pins, and lighters—pretty much all the accessories. We got denim in the works. It’s just one of those things where people can represent their shops. I don’t really look at Grandeur like it’s a brand. What are your top selling brands? Kayo kills it. JSLV has been killin’ it. So has Flying Coffin. All Tum Yeto products do well. HUF, Dekline, and Lakai are doing well for footwear. And we just picked up Filament and it’s starting to pick up some momentum. What’s your future plans for the store? We should have an online store dropping here by the end of the year—thegrandeur.com and we’ll only be selling selective “collab” items on there that you can’t find in the store. There may also be a future store opening soon in a different state.

Oceanside Dance Academy Words: Eric Klier
Photos: zach cordner
Located along a palm tree-lined stretch of Oceanside Boulevard, the Oceanside Dance Academy is a bustling dance studio full of happy faces and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. Offering Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop, recreation, competition, and “Mommy & Me” classes for children and a Hip Hop class and Zumba programs for adults, there’s something for everyone at ODA. With three studios at their Oceanside location and five studios at their Temecula location, Artistic Director Anjelica Wilson is a very busy and energetic business owner. Anjelica’s mother, Jocelyn K. Wilson, started ODA 25 years ago at their original location (just down the street from their current location), and though she’s no longer there in person—Jocelyn’s spirit definitely lives on at the studio. Patrons are welcomed by a beautiful picture of her dancing on the Oceanside beach as they walk in. Growing up dancing at her mother’s studio, Anjelica had no plans to pursue a dance career or to take over the management of the business. Inspired by her mother’s passion and commitment to the student’s of ODA, she felt it was important to keep her legacy going when her mother passed. Teaching dance is their business, but the end result for Anjelica and her staff is really to teach values beyond just dance that’ll serve their students well into the future. Anjelica loves to see the development of the dancers from beginning to end. She feels it’s a long-term investment in each child that dances with them, and one of her favorite things to do is write letters of recommendation for her college-bound students. ODA participates in dance competitions, but they keep the numbers small and like to emphasize quality—not quantity—and a true team spirit for their dancers. New students are given two free classes to find the right spot for them. Parents can view classes from the lobby on the live-feed screens Osider 52

Kennedy’s Custom Cycles Words: Steve Becker
Photos: Christopher Donez
“The Kennedys are a force for good in the community of Oceanside.”
Owners, Bill and Mike.
If you ride a Harley Davidson motorcycle, chances are you’ve visited Kennedy’s custom Cycles. Since June 1st 1986, the Brothers Kennedy provided sales, service parts, and support to the “two-wheel” community. Back then—it was Bill, Mike, and Pat Kennedy who opened the doors. Brother Pat left the business and moved to Arizona not long after in order to escape the helmet laws California had recently enacted. Pat went on to become rather famous as a custom bike builder. I walked into the shop for the first time back in 1990 for a look around. I’d been off Harleys for about five years after starting a family. I needed to get back in the saddle. I’d never met Bill Kennedy, but he greeted me like an old friend. Needless to say, I was back on a Harley—all was good. The business grew, as did the Kennedy reputation. The Kennedys have been a pillar of the local business community and are known worldwide for their charitable contributions. They started hosting special events like “The Great Cover Up” to provide clothing and
blankets for the homeless and the needy. They’ve helped raise money for the Paralyzed Veterans, Brother Beno’s, and many others. Bill likes to tell you, “The only way to help yourself is by helping others.” He’s a rather pragmatic individual who tells you he’ll give you “a hand up—not a handout.” Through their civic involvement with city hall, their friendship with Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood who—by the way—attends each and every worthy event the Kennedys are involved with. The Kennedys are a force for good in the community of Oceanside. Mike’s son Kyle joined the crew in 2004 and runs the shop while Mike and Uncle Bill are away. Kyle looks a bit like the “Wolfman” from the old Lon Chaney movies. But not to worry—there’re no pentagrams visible on the palms of his hands and the shop closes before sundown on nights with full moons. Master mechanic Steve Laurence runs the full service and repair department. The guy’s a Harley Davidson wizard. No jobs are too big or too small for him. If you’ve never been to Kennedy’s Custom Cycles, you need to drop in and give them a visit. I sometimes refer to Kennedy’s Custom Cycles as “The second happiest place on Earth.” But then again, I ride a Harley.

Pit Stop Diner The heart of oceanside dining words: aaron schmidt Photos: zach cordner
Upon walking into the Pit Stop Diner, you can’t help but notice the pristine 1964 Chrysler New Yorker so prominently parked in the middle of the dining area. There’re all sorts of 1950s-era memorabilia plastering the walls like old car license plates, street signs, and nostalgic photos. Customers have also been known to donate “kitsch-y” items to add to its decorative walls. It’s always a packed house at the Pit Stop Diner and it’s probably because the food is amazingly good and very affordable. Owner Artemios (Arte) Kefallinos opened The Pit Stop in 2010 and has been providing the locals with classic “American-style” breakfast, lunch, and dinner ever since. After starting the business with help from his father, Demetrios, Arte is dedicated to ensuring his family legacy lives on. “I’ve been doing this since I was a kid. As I got older, I was always working with my dad at stores that he had. A few years ago, I had the idea to open The Pit Stop and kept going with it—and here we are, ” said Arte. The Pit Stop Diner is also big on giving back to the community. “Now that’s its wintertime, I proudly do three or fundraisers a week for all the local high schools, “ said Arte. I do fundraisers for every single high school, every single middle school, and every single elementary schools multiple times a year—and that adds up to thousands of dollars.” Arte is dedicated to ensuring the well being of tons of local school kids in need that have health issues or other emergencies. “The future for this place is that we just have to maintain. We are big time supporters of veterans and the elderly. That’s why we have so many people in the Pit Stop Diner community eat here because we are one of the few places 3825 Mission Avenue D1 that’s affordable, “ said Arte proudly. “We keep it family.” (760) 901-4299 Osider 54

Café de Thai Thai it all together Words & PHOTOS by NEENS
Café de Thai is a family-style restaurant run by an authentically eclectic crew. The owners, Paisan and Miko, are a Thai and Chinese couple who met in Bangkok. Miko was a Japanese language teacher at a University in Thailand. She started cooking because the Japanese government gave her a scholarship to live in Japan and teach Japanese people how to cook Thai food. Their head sushi chef, Van Vuong, is Chinese and from Vietnam. He started making sushi because he loves the presentation factor, and also because he loves to be behind the sushi bar entertaining customers. When asked why they do both Thai Food and Sushi, their comical yet truthful response was: “Thai Food and Sushi work good together because it decreases arguments amongst families. We serve both here, so people don’t have to be torn and go to two places. We have something for everyone!” Van’s philosophy of sushi is that he’d never serve fish that he wouldn’t eat himself. Quality is his main priority. The freshness of his Sashimi would make that his specialty, but he says that his baked California Roll—with garlic mayo scallops—is a crowd pleaser. Heading up the kitchen, Miko also has her own unique approach to Thai Food: “I love to take the best of all Asian foods and mix them together, but still keep it authentic. I like healthy food. I like to use less salt, less oil, and less sugar.” I could tell that Miko was an Asian chef who thought outside the box when I ate a cream cheese wonton and found avocado inside. It was a pleasant surprise. She also has house made desserts for you to try, like her mango cheesecake made with real mangos and Greek yogurt. For the experienced Thai Food eater, try their Hot Basil. You can choose a protein and it’s stir fried with chili, garlic, and basil. If you need an adventurous challenge, try the Spicy Green Bean dish. It has that Thai kick to it with onions, garlic, lemongrass, and minced galangal root—stirfried with green beans, shrimp and/or chicken and kaffir lime. Osider 56

Petite Madeline Craft Bakery Words & PHOTOS by NEENS
Owner, Christine Loyola.
Osider 58
Petite Madeline is a corner café in the heart of downtown Oceanside. In the building formerly occupied by the old California Surf Museum, the smell of resin and wax has gracefully been replaced by the aroma of melting butter and caramelizing sugar. Chef/owner, Christine Loyola, once did research for investment bankers in the Bay Area. While frequently taking clients out to high-end dinners, she started to fall in love with the fancy food she was being served and attempted to make them at home. When the market took a dive, Christine took her one-year severance, along with her new obsession, and went to culinary school for a full career change—a risk she was willing to take. We had a chat while I indulged in a hot cup of coffee, a variety of breakfast plates, and some pastries—including my personal fave, the “All Day Bun.” Chef Christine broke it down for me: “All of our food is handmade here, the artisan way. From our pastries and breads, to our homemade sausage. Everything is real time. We make it right in front of you.” Along with fresh baked goods, Petite Madeline also offers unique savory dishes. Their “Tea House Oatmeal” consists of buckwheat groats, forbidden rice, flax seed, and steel oats—with a full layer of fresh fruit on top. And her “French Basque Country Breakfast” is a portion of homemade sausage made embudito style (Filipino meatloaf) with lean pork, chicken, beef, raisins, pistachios, and a whole egg served with piperada sauce, grilled little gem lettuce, crushed croutons, eggs, and three slices of bread. I’m not sure if you caught all elements in those dishes, so you might want to read that again. I know, this is just oatmeal and sausage, but it’s oatmeal and sausage on the next level. “Craft” means that things are done in small batches, so that attention to detail is possible. While there are many Craft Petite Madeline Breweries here in San Diego, let’s put Petite 223 North Coast Highway Madeline first on the list for Craft Bakeries. Alphonzo Rawls Words: Louie Hayward PHOTOS: Zach Cordner
If you’ve ever owned a pair of skate shoes, chances are professional skateboarder/shoe designer—Alphonzo Rawls—probably designed them. Birthed in Thailand (with a short stint in Okinawa), he landed in Oceanside at age three. Like most kids in the early 80s, he’d play after school and on weekends at a local school playground. During his fifth grade summer while shoot ing hoops at Libby Elementary, he met his local skate hero, Adrian Demain. Around this time, street skating was on the rise. Demain loaned Alphonzo his board to give skateboarding a try, and that was all she wrote—Alf lived and breathed skateboarding. His first skateboard was hand built. His second board was a Kamikaze complete. It wasn’t long before he got his first legit board—a Neil Blender. After being approached several times for sponsorship, Alf landed on H Street through another skate hero, Danny Way. He’d soon turn pro after the movie Shackle Me Not was released and got his first signature deck at the San Jose mini ramp jam. In 1995, he landed a pro shoe deal with Kastel and then added this to his roster, as well. It was this footwear sponsor that opened another passion—designing shoes. He had a knack for it and his creative juices were flowing. It wasn’t long before Alf was offered a job at Duffs to design their shoes. In footwear, he learned everything from top to bottom. After a ten year pro skateboarding career, Alf retired and accepted a job as head footwear designer for DC Shoes. In 2002, he broke away and became an independent shoe designer. Having a roster of brands under his belt (including Nike, DC Shoes, and Fallen to name a few) elevated his status and kept him extremely busy. Happily married and father of two, Alphonzo is set to enter his third career. Eight months and counting, his brand—“Everybody Skates—has made serious headway with 60 plus accounts domestically, and it’s also distributed in twelve countries. Ironically, everything has come full circle for him. Around the same time he started his company, he moved back to Oceanside—where it all began. Having made his mark in skateboarding and shoe design, we can anticipate “Everybody Skates” to be a huge success. Osider 60

Toys for Tots is a long-standing mission of local Marines words: Promise yee Photo: zach cordner
The Toys for Tots children’s toy drive is a mission that U.S. Marine Reserves take as seriously as any other assignment. From October to mid December, reservists are tasked with overseeing donation bins, toy pickups, and making appearances at local toy drives. The goal is to collect and distribute toys to every local child in need. Last year, over 74,000 boys and girls received new toys for the holidays. To get the job done, reservists facilitate the efforts of companies, clubs, and individuals that volunteers to collect toys. Gunnery Sergeant Matthew Klepsa is the coordinator of the Camp Pendleton based North San Diego and Southwest River side County efforts. He said some days he and fellow Marines volunteer for 24-hour shifts. Civilian volunteers also pitch in manhours and vehicles to transport toys. The need is critical. “There’re families that have gone two or three Christmases, that their children have not gotten a toy,” Klepsa said. “That’s why I volunteer.” To identify families in need, Marines partner with churches and nonprofit groups that work with low-income families. The ser vice groups gather holiday wish lists that include the age and gender of boys and girls in need, and serve as distribution points. Klepsa said he never meets the children who receive the toys, but does get big thanks from the service groups. He said he also hears appreciation from toy donors who say it feels good to give to children. The American Legion Riders have been steady supporters of the toy drive. The motorcycle club—comprised of military veterans—takes part in the local benefit ride in which motorcycle riders, of all stripes, strap teddy bears, and toys to their bikes and then they ride to a destination to hand off the toys to Marines. The number of riders and toys collected varies each year, with both counts in the hundreds. This year American Legion Riders Chapter146 is organizing the Oceanside ride, which will meet up at the Veterans Association of North County on November 8. For more info on donating, visit

What Socket Wrenches and Power Tools Can’t Fix:
Reality Health Check for Guys Why is it that guys tend to take better care of their car than their health? Even the strongest people may face physical and mental illnesses that can slow them down. Don’t wait for the “check engine” light to turn on. Ask your doctor about:
Prostate Cancer (most common in men 50+) This disease occurs when the cells in the prostate grow far more rapidly than normal, resulting in a tumor. Prostate cancer is usually a slow growing cancer, often causing no symptoms until it is in an advanced stage. Symptoms:
• A frequent need to urinate • A painful or burning sensation during urination or ejaculation
Treatment:
• Highly treatable with surgery, radiation, and other therapys
Testicular Cancer (most common in men 15-35 years) This illness starts as an abnormal growth or tumor that develops in one or both testicles. Every man should have his doctor explain the steps of a testicular self-exam, a simple but very important practice that can help a guy determine if something is not quite right. Symptoms:
• Swelling or a lump in a testicle • Aches or pain in the lower abdomen or groin
Treatment:
• Highly treatable with surgery, radiation, and other therapys
Depression (at any age) It is not a sign of weakness, and it is more than feeling sad. Depression is a serious medical disease that involves disturbances in mood, activity level, interests, appetite and social behavior. Symptoms:
• Loss of interest • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
Treatment:
• Medication and psychotherapy
• Irritability
• Fatigue
