INTRODUCTION » 2015 Cadillac Escalade exclusive interview with VP Global Design ED Welburn
The saying goes, “it’s lonely at the top,” but the top of the full-size luxury SUV market is beginning to get cramped. In fact, it seems that many affluents are moving into the neighborhood with brands like Bentley making plans as well as Lamborghini, Tesla and even Range Rover extending the lengths of their flagships to better compete in the market created by the Escalade. The team at GM and Cadillac is not taking it sitting down and using their new competitors, including the Mercedes Benz GL, as benchmarks. The Escalade has “gone to the gym” and become leaner, more aggressive and packed with the greatest amount of technology ever. I spoke with GM Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn, about the process. Our interview went as follows.
OI: So Ed…talk about the process of re-designing the Escalade for the next generation. Welburn: …When you think about it, I mean Escalade, this is now the fourth generation… OI: Exactly. Welburn: …And with each generation it has taken a significant step and if you talk to Escalade owners they make it sound like what they have is the ultimate. They’ve said that generation after generation after generation so to take the ultimate to a higher level is a significant challenge but it’s a fun- it’s the kind of challenge I like to take on and with this one you know- dramatic resonance, the whole grille, the vertical headlamps, the very jewel-like LED lamps, technology within it…One of my favorite areas is the tail lamp and the way it’s designed. It’s like very modern architecture…It’s just cool. I’m very proud of what the team did. OI: When I look at the design I think the last generation Escalade was like a cornerback or a wide receiver. It was very elegant. It was strong. It was athletic. It was powerful, but it was nimble. This looks more like a linebacker. It looks more aggressive, yet it’s pronounced. It’s defined. It looks more chiseled. Talk about that. Talk about how you’ve evolved. Welburn: I think you’ve said it all. There’s nothing else for me to say. You’ve said it all. Naw, seriously, it does in many ways and of course I’ve said this about other vehicles but it is like a world-class athlete that’s gone back to the gym. It’s gotten lean. It’s gotten fit and it is ready. OI: It is ready and now I notice, as you said. Talk about the new front end because now it seems like it’s a new design language. You’ve kind of evolved the art and science and it really is very pronounced, more pronounced on the Escalade than even the CTS. Weburn: ‘Cause it’s an Escalade and in Escalade the face is very important. The grille is like a shield. It’s a big symbol. So you’ve got that and there are layers of refinement within that grille and then it’s framed by the strong vertical head lamps with just layers of technology within the lamp itself. OI: Can you show us some of that because obviously you have the LED’s. Welburn: Look at these. Look at these jewel-like head lamps and all the elements within it and the cylinders – the vertical cylinders, the horizontal elements, the layers of technology within it and then you’ve got the light pipe and then it continues down lower. It’s an amazing work of art. I am so proud of what the team did in developing this… OI: And then even the front grille has actually kind of changed too. Welburn: The grille is bold and as you look at it you see all of the sculpture that went within it. It’s got bright chrome. It’s got satin chrome. It’s got a number of different layers of finishes…and then a secondary grille texture as well OI: So kind of talk about the clay process too with this. How long did it take to re-design the Escalade and how was that process? Welburn: We started work I don’t know – three - four years ago. A lot of work is done in the computer. It’s that, again art and science. It’s fine art sculptors working in clay. It’s other sculptors who are actually creating in the computer, sculpting in the computer. It’s just a cool process and some of it I keep secret. OI: Of course. So actually with this one you were able to do a lot of animation, a lot of 4• Toyznation.com
rendering with digital technologies before you even got to the clay process.

de Wilde Photos by Autumn de Wilde for GM cover Photo also by Autumn
Welburn: Well there’s a lot done up front in the computer but it’s all a balance back and forth and it’s a big collaboration - communication between the computer and the physical model. OI: Did you guys do any 3D modeling with this or 3D printing? Was that integrated anywhere in the design? Welburn: No…it’s our own process that we use. OI: Obviously, trade secrets…Obviously this is the base so I guess we should anticipate seeing even more enhancements in a Platinum edition or would you guys have a Platinum edition for this model? Welburn: I think you and your audience can dream and think about what that might be. OI: Obviously seeing the concepts we see some more evolution than we could imagine. Welburn: Tonight is about Escalade OI: Thank you so much for your time. Welburn: Thank you.

The full-size luxury flagship is the standard by which many associate the prestige of a brand. The luxury flagship is the standard bearer, the perfection of vision, execution and technology, and the display of the craftsmanship a luxury brand has to offer. The Lexus LS 460 L is quintessential for everything one wants when you think of a Lexus. Powered by a more than capable 4.6L V8 which makes 360 HP and is mated to a sequential shifting 8-speed automatic, the LS 460 exemplifies the pursuit of perfection Lexus has long touted. The LS 460 L comes standard with a permanent all-wheel drive system making it more than desirable for the highly affluent, mid-Atlantic and northeast customers it seeks. The quality of materials is even richer and the available technology abundant with safety features like an advanced pre-collision system and technology features like a 12.3” split-screen display. You get a full list of available features, yet the LS 460 L still provides value for the frugal affluent customers who could make a fortune investing the difference in price to its competitors. The LS 460 L starts at $81,775 and the optioned model I drove topped $87,000. Lexus LS 460 F Sport The Lexus 460 F Sport has been totally re-designed and the driver experience incredibly enhanced with new larger displays and integrated technologies. With the F Sport model, the focus is on performance with paddle shifters and a firmer suspension tuning. The F Sport I drove featured 19” wheels and an all-wheel drive system which paired with a 4.6L V8 engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission makes 360 HP for a thriving combination of power and control. For those who want a more vigorous drive to the office, the F-Sport is more than capable to provide thrills while also giving the comforts and ambiance expected from the LS 460. DRIVE » Cadillac XTS VSport AWD Platinum I had already driven the Cadillac XTS Platinum with AWD and was impressed with the improvements over the DTS that the XTS replaced. However, it wasn’t until I got behind the wheel of the Vsport that I was blown away. I saw the new 3.6L Twin Turbo engine at the launch event for the Cadillac CTS but in the XTS there are several differences which enhance the driving experience and provide entirely different driving dynamics. The XTS Vsport delivers 410 HP; however, the XTS is much larger than the CTS and is also paired with an all-wheel drive system provided by Haldex which is currently not available on the CTS. The XTS Vsport also uses a six-speed automatic and I had an absolute thrill with the paddle shifters and the highly responsive steering wheel. A 20”-wheel package was featured on the XTS Vsport I drove in addition to chrome inserts in the dual exhaust, chrome door handles with LED lighting, and a blackened grille which gave an appealing exterior that was alluring to onlookers. The CUE system is standard along with premium interior touches. There are also available features like adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert, a full-color head-up display and so much more. The XTS Vsport is a definitive statement by Cadillac of the intent to carve out a place among the full-size luxury flagships. With the combination of improved power and available technology, the XTS has proven its merits in the conversation and at the bare minimum has guaranteed an invite and raised expectations for the rumored rear-wheel drive flagship. The battle among full-size luxury SUVs has been fierce over the years. The Land Cruiser had been king and then the Lincoln Navigator took the crown before yielding to Cadillac, which re-defined the segment and forced luxury car makers worldwide to come into the market. Many efforts have been made to varying success with ultra-luxury brands like Bentley considering entries. Not one, however, has been as successful as Mercedes Benz, who with the 2013 GL has wrest the crown from Cadillac for top-selling, full-size luxury SUV and in the process has collected a number of trophies for SUV of the Year. It is not only the craftsmanship and the technological expertise you come to expect from the inventor of the automobile, it’s the Mercedes Benz GL’s seamless way of catering to your needs from the mbrace telematics system that integrates with Facebook to the 4.6L biturbo engine that pumps out 429 HP and 516 lb-ft of torque, more than adequate to maneuver the behemoth and retain the performance dynamics you expect from anything bearing the 3-pronged emblem.. Everything from massaging seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a night assist package to a slew of safety features are available with the GL which is more akin to a full-size luxury flagship. Standard with 21” wheels and with a towing capacity of 7,500 lbs, the GL is a welcome site in any posh zip code around the world. The GL550 4Matic starts at $86,900 and can be optioned with many of the offerings found on the S class. For more information, visit MBUSA.com.

LAUNCH Âť 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe & Suburban
When it comes to the full-size SUV market GM doesn’t just compete, it owns the market and with it a substantial amount of profits which for years ensured the viability of the automaker. Things have changed with GM making competitive products in every segment that are fuel-efficient and packed with class-leading technology. When subcompacts like the Sonic feature Siri integration, one can expect a fully integrated telematics solution in the 2015 Tahoe and Suburban. At an event this past fall I was pleased with the all-new Chevy MyLink, yet that is not the only convenience feature you get with the 2015 Tahoe and Suburban. With an available 12 charging stations, entertainment system, and a burly exterior, one gets the impression of a moving fortress. The build quality is dramatically improved with a measure of fit and finish equivalent to the current generation Escalade. The color palette in the interior has more range and I found the browns inviting and intriguing. The 5.3L Ecotec V8 engine will debut with the 2015 Tahoe and Suburban and will feature fuel-saving technologies like cylinder deactivation, direct injection, and continuous valve timing to boost fuel economy while maintaining performance. As we get closer to the spring 2014 debut, more information will become available. In the meantime, visit www.chevrolet. com/15Tahoe and www.chevrolet.com/15Suburban.

he A4 has done wonders for Audi’s bottom line and the S4 has re-defined the imagination in terms of performance. With a 3.0 L V6 which makes 333 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque. The S4 is light and the torque is felt almost instantly as the swift-maneuvering vehicle makes use of its permanent quattro all-wheel drive system that is mated to the 7-speed S tronic transmission. The S4 starts at $49,000 and the model I drove had a Bang & Olufsen Sound System and the great Audi connect system provided by T-Mobile which made the S4 a hotspot. The vehicle also included an Audi MMI Navigation system featuring Google maps with 3D imaging which was great as I drove around landmarks in DC. You can always expect impeccable craftsmanship from Audi with interiors using great quality materials. With the S4 you get great performance in a sexy package that thrills from the moment your foot hits the pedal. For more information, visit www.audiusa.com.
« MERCEDES BENZ CLA 250
Mercedes Benz has been a member of the family for quite some time. I fondly remember driving my father’s burgundy 190D and still draw from that experience today. Some have compared the introduction of the compact CLA to the 190 and I am here to say it is a false comparison. The two cars are night and day and in fact, the CLA is a Benz like no other before it. My mother, who has also been a Benz owner with a black E320, was amazed and impressed with the CLA and it instantly became her preference when I took her for a ride in one. The styling cues of the CLA are drawn from the CLS and are even more dramatic in its compact form. The turbo-charged 2.0L I-4 which makes 208 hp and 258lb-ft of torque has enough power and is amazingly fuel-efficient. I was pleasantly surprised at the pricing with a base price of $29,900. Adding options like the premium package and multimedia package which includes the COMAND system with navigation, a backup camera, a 6-disc DVD changer and more, brings the price slightly north of $36,000. In that range, the CLA250 competes with many mid-size sedans but trounces them in driving dynamics, prestige and styling. For a young working professional, an older retiree, or a young professional family I see the CLA as a perfect fit and with an EPA rating of 38 mpg on the highway before electrification, I do not see a better option in the marketplace. There are no compromises, just surprises at how accessible a Mercedes has become and how stylish you would look driving one. For more information, visit www.mbusa.com.

BMW X1 xDrive28i I can remember the first BMW I rode in like it was yesterday. It was my uncle’s maroon 528i and the year was 1987. My friends and family have owned them over the years and many still do to this day. I finally spent an extended period of time with the ultimate driving machine when I drove the X1 for a week and I’m thrilled to say the experience was amazing. Considered a sports activity vehicle, the X1 xDrive28i uses the 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 240 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic and includes paddle shifters. The X1 I drove also had a panoramic roof which allowed for an illuminated cabin as I cruised on I-70, delighting in my BMW experience. The handling was superb and the power more than adequate. It was also fuel-efficient with an auto start-stop function that helped it make 33 MPG on the highway and 22 MPG in city driving. I truly enjoyed my time and anticipate further adventures with the ultimate driving machine. For more info, visit www.bmwusa.com.
MINI COOPER JOHN COOPER WORKS COUNTRYMAN “Let’s motor” is such a rallying cry and as you drive through Georgetown in Washington, DC you would think the clarion has been sounded there. BMW has been impeccable in their stewardship of the MINI brand and has been effective in its expansion to several models with different driving dynamics and different tastes for a broader base of consumers. The Cooper brand even includes convertibles, but I got a chance to spend a week in the Countryman. The Countryman is a crossover and the John Cooper Works edition is a performance model featuring a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. I delighted in my travels on I-70 from western Maryland to Baltimore where I was able to experience a combination of compact power and superior handling, courtesy of the ALL4 full time all-wheel drive system. Paddle shifters and a 6-speed automatic transmission came with my mill which made 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. THE MINI wired package also came with the model I drove making integration with my iPhone 5s seamless along with controlling my playlists. The JCW Countryman begins at $34,850. « BUICK ENCLAVE
The resurgence of the Buick brand in America was sparked by the Enclave. I remember the concept and how stunning it looked as a premium full-size SUV that seats 7 with premium appointments, multiple TV screens, captain’s seats, a panoramic roof, and a car-like ride. For 2014, the Enclave builds upon the spirit of the concept and the first generation and adds more technology, refinements and cosmetic improvements, visible with LED lighting and a bolder grille. The powertrain remains unchanged with a 3.6L V6 and 288HP getting 22 MPG on the highway with the AWD system. It’s the interior where the magic happens with a new Buick IntelliLink system with improved telematics and extra features including better touch interfaces and functionality. What really impresses is the quality of the interior materials from the leather stitching on the dash and steering wheel to the ambient lighting and interior touches. The Buick
Enclave AWD Premium begins at $48,315. For more information, visit www.buick.com.
« FORD FUSION ENERGI
The Ford Fusion is a gorgeous piece of sheet metal. It is a crowning achievement of J Mays and his team to craft a world-class sedan that can be affordable and fit the vision of CEO Alan Mullaly’s One Ford plan. One could say that the Fusion fits in the mold of a modern day model but with every conceivable powertrain option including the Energi, a plug-in hybrid. I found the Fusion Energi to be an appealing mid-size sedan with premium touches, great technology, safety features, and most importantly fuel efficiency. The Fusion Energi has a combined 100 mpg rating with an all-electric range that maxes out at 21 miles, though during my week in the mid-Atlantic it got around 15-17 miles of all-electric power. With regenerative breaking you can recharge the battery and provide more efficient driving in hybrid mode. The Fusion Energi is the model to get with a combined 188 HP and a price, as tested, of slightly under $42,000. There is also a mobile app which allows you to monitor your Fusion from your phone. AUDI ALLROAD 2.0T The quattro all-wheel drive system is a world-class and performance-oriented package that symbolizes the essence of Audi and allows the flexibility in the architecture that underpins most Audi vehicles. In the premium and luxury segment, Audi is the only brand that can almost exclusively build front-wheel drive vehicles and use the all-wheel drive system to effectively enhance driving dynamics and perform with the best. The Audi allroad is the perfect embodiment of what makes Audi great. Powered by a 2.0T 4-cylinder engine that makes 211 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, the allroad is a functional, all-purpose vehicle mated to an 8-speed automatic and a permanent quattro all-wheel drive system. PASSAT SEL TSI For the 2014 model year VW has made a number of changes to the all-new Passat which debuted last year. Consistently among the top 10 in sales in its category, the Passat has been award-winning so the changes improve on an otherwise spectacular product. The biggest change in the 2014 Passat is the introduction of a new 1.8L turbo inline 4 which makes 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque matching output of the previous 2.5L edition but getting more efficiency as the new 1.8L also uses direct injection technology. The TSI gets 34 mpg on the highway and 24 MPG in the city with a slew of comfort features like a Fender sound system, backup camera, heated seats, iPod integration, and so much more. I loved the 18” alloys and all-season Radials which handled great in my driving around the DC metropolitan are this fall. The SEL Premium I drove was priced at $30,895 without additional options. A new IS-F should be due in a model year or two and one can only hope it will be as exciting to drive as the 2013 IS-F. The IS-F defies the reputation of Lexus as a well-crafted brand with an emphasis on driver comfort. The IS-F is strictly about exhilaration from the moment you enter the racing-inspired cockpit, sit behind the wheel and put your fingers on the paddle shifters. The IS-F is powered by a 5.0L V8 that makes 416 HP and 371 lb-ft of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic which finds gears swiftly. The handling is firm and the steering is sensitive and responsive. The acceleration is also impressive with Lexus estimating a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. As usual, the appointments and comforts are as you expect in a Lexus with an available hard disk drive navigation system, a backup camera, Enform with eDestination and a suite of apps like Yelp, OpenTable, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets, and so much more. The reason you get the IS-F, though, is for the driving dynamics and performance and on both fronts the IS-F impresses. The IS-F starts at $61,750. For more information, visit www.Lexus.com.
« LEXUS IS 350 F-SPORT AWD I remember seeing the XTS in concept in Detroit and wondering how much of the gorgeous design would make it to production and whether the platinum fit and finish would make it. How about the plug-in powertrain? Would consumers even like the XTS or would they miss the DTS? What would they say about this combination of the DTS and STS in the Cadillac product line-up? I must say, in my week of driving the XTS Platinum AWD I was impressed and amazed at how much of the concept made it into production. Save for the plug-in powertrain, a whole lot made it into the final production car. The vehicle has a 3.6L V6 which makes 304 HP and gets 26 MPG on the highway when paired with the great Haldex AWD system. The XTS Platinum has to be the most technologically advanced Cadillac ever with the CUE system and with safety features like vibrating seats to alert drivers to objects in their path when reversing the vehicle. Sales for the XTS have been brisk so consumers have warmed up to this new Cadillac, part of a brand that now approaches 110 years since Henry Leland founded the company and in the platinum trim, Cadillac meets his high standard of craftsmanship. For the 2013 model year, Lexus has totally re-designed their most popular model, the ES, with new upgrades in power, comfort, design, and driving dynamics. The ES adopts the new front end signature design, giving the ES a svelte silhouette. The interior boasts new gauges with bigger displays and the Lexus Enform telematics system. You also get great luxury options like the bamboo wood trim that is included in the luxury package featured in the model I drove. This model also had a hard disk drive navigation system with backup camera, an 8” VGA screen, and tons of extra goodies like Destination Assist, SiriusXM satellite radio, NavTraffic, NavWeather, SiriusXM Sports and Stocks, Parking Assist, and a heated steering wheel which brought the base price of $38,800 to $45,175. The hybrid powertrain offers the fuel economy rating of 40/39 mpg city/highway which is a great combination of efficiency and power from the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that makes a total of 200 HP from the combined gasoline and electric motors. « 2013 VELOSTER TURBO A/T There has been much discussion about millennials being disinterested in automobiles, but I dismiss this sentiment as ultimately tastes change from generation to generation and at the end of the day its about functionality, features and performance. Hyundai took a gamble in trying to reach the millennials set and scored big with the Veloster, a 3-door performance coupe with full connectivity and unique styling including LED lights, 18-inch wheels, a 7-inch multi-media screen and so much more starting under $23,000. This coupe features a 1.6 L Turbo engine delivering 201 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The model I drove also included the Ultimate Package featuring a stylish panoramic roof and a navigation system with a backup camera. I also enjoyed Hyundai’s Blue Link system which allowed me to voice where I wanted to go then have directions downloaded to the screen to guide me to my destination, a restaurant in DC. Beyond the upgraded styling which borrows inspiration from J Mays’ work with former sibling Aston Martin, the Fusion bears many competitive features starting with the fuel-saving EcoBoost technology that makes 240 hp and 270 lb.-ft. of torque while getting 31 MPG on the highway. I loved the adaptive headlamps, the adaptive cruise control and the active park assist, all features not found on offerings in this segment. 2014 CHEVY IMPALA LT The Impala is one of the iconic car brands. The ’62 and ’64 model years are legendary and as of recent the brand has been profitable, selling over 200,000 a year though with a high percentage going to fleet sales. Everything changes with the 2014 re-design. Impala is looking to dominate the full-size segment and looking is an appropriate term as the large sedan is one gorgeous piece of metal. Nothing carries over from the previous model save for the 3.6L V6 and 6-speed automatic. Everything about the ’14 Impala is modern from the abundance of safety features to a telematics system, Chevy’s version of CUE called MyLink which actually is more loved, easy to use and customizable. I drove an LT and truly loved the vehicle as did my brother who owned a 2005 model. There are 3 powertrain options from the 3.6L V6, a 4-cylinder and a mild hybrid that gets 36 MPG on the highway. The LT I drove starts at $29,950 and with the safety features, wheels, navigation, paint, telematics and sound upgrade options the total came up to $35,355. « 2013 BUICK ENCORE AWD Post restructuring and the ascent back to being the world’s #1 automobile manufacturer, GM has relied on their global footprint to develop products that achieve the economies of scale to be profitable and the product planning to redefine segments. The Buick brand is highly popular abroad, in Southeast Asia to be specific and the Encore is a product that probably would not have been available in American prior to GM’s restructuring. Coming out of the Korean studios, the Encore has resounded great with customers who want a luxurious compact with great features, great styling and premium materials. The Buick Encore has no peers currently, but one can expect that to change in short order. The sales success of the Sonata has made Hyundai a staple in America. The fluid sculpture design has exemplified an identity for Hyundai and influenced others to modify their design approach in the competitive mid-size segment. The hybrid henceforth builds upon a great foundation and for 2013 the hybrid has enjoyed additional refinement and a more efficient powertrain that makes 40 MPG on the highway. The base price on the Sonata Hybrid Limited is $30,550 with the only additional options on my tester being a panoramic roof for $1,000. For more information visit www.hyundaiusa.com.

2013 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT SE AWC The compact SUV market has expanded as of recent with what seems like virtually every manufacturer bidding to get a piece of the market. Mitsubishi however has long been a player with over 12 years in this segment with the Outlander. For 2013, the Sport SE model adds multiple features from styling to comfort that made my week with this vehicle exciting. The Sport has a 2.4 L engine that makes 168 hp which was more than adequate for driving around the DC metropolitan area. The all-wheel drive system handled well and my experience was enhanced by the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. When it comes to sound, the Sport SE is second to none with the available 710-watt Rockford Fosgate sound system with 9 speakers. The model I drove also had the 40GB HDD navigation system with music allowing for more than adequate storage of music. The Sport AWC starts at $23,695 and with the options I mentioned comes out to slightly under $29,000. For more information visit www.mitsubishicars.com.
2013 ELANTRA GT M/T Another excellent addition to the Elantra family has been the European-inspired Elantra GT which adds a 5-door option to the lineup. For people who love the Elantra but want more cargo room and space the GT is the perfect option and the European-designed cockpit features more premium materials than the coupe and sedan. The GT I drove featured rich, black piano accents, a panoramic sunroof, backup camera, leather seating, and 17-inch alloys along with Bluetooth and many other convenience features. Beyond the 6-speed manual transmission I had fun with the peppy 1.8 L, 4-cylinder engine that makes 148 hp and 131 lb.-ft. of torque. The Elantra GT starts at just over $18,000 and the model I drove which features the tech package and style package costs just over $24,000. For more info visit www.hyundaiusa.com.
2013 SANTA FE SPORT AWD 2.0T Hyundai has been on a roll as of late. A simple glance at monthly sales figures validates their tremendous success and the annual increase in sales has resulted in an increase in market shares. One of the most competitive automotive segments is the crossover SUV market. For 2013, Hyundai has totally redone the Santa Fe with new styling and upgraded telematics through Blue Link. I had a chance to spend extended time with the 5-passenger Santa Fe Sport AWD Turbo featuring a 2.0-liter direct-injection 4-cylinder engine that makes 264 hp and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. The powertrain is more than adequate and provides an exhilarating experience with a six-speed automatic transmission featuring SHIFTRONIC and 19-inch alloy wheels. The model I drove also had a panoramic roof and a new 8-inch touchscreen with a navigation system. As optioned, the 5-passenger sport retails for just under $36K. For more info visit www. hyundaiusa.com.
2013 HYUNDAI ELANTRA COUPE SE The compact car market has been truly dynamic with the usual stalwarts, the Corolla and Civic pacing sales. An unexpected entrant into the top 5 is the Elantra which recently expanded their offering to include a coupe. The coupe continues many of the features its four-door sibling offers to break through this very competitive segment. The Elantra coupe has great styling and more than adequate power with a 1.8 L, 145 hp and 130 lb.-ft. of torque engine. The model I drove featured a six-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC which is sound enough to be supplied to other manufacturers. The Elantra coupe is also very affordable with a price just under $24,000 including navigation. For more information visit www.hyundaiusa.com.

2014 KIA SORENTO SX AWD Kia has been enjoying considerable success as of late. Part of their success has to be attributed to their ability to offer an incredible amount of standard features and an aggressive refresh schedule which is what I observed in the 2014 Sorento SX AWD. Making the Sorento even more competitive in the full-size crossover segment, the SX AWD has a third row option which allows seating for 7 passengers. Additional features include a power liftgate, LED tail lights, UVO telematics with a rearview camera, navigation, and multimedia functionality using an 8” display. The voice command function is better than most I encounter and the panoramic roof is a premium option that is standard on the SX. Power is delivered from a 3.3L V6 making 290HP and 252 lb-ft of torque. You also get standard 19” alloy wheels on the SX which makes 24 MPG on the highway. Pricing on the SX begins at $36,000. For more info visit www.kia.com.
2013 KIA RIO SX 5DR I constantly find myself impressed by the compact offerings of Kia and my drive in the Kia Rio SX 5DR did not disappoint. I will venture to say the Rio probably has the best product planning in its segment with a full array of features, packaging and styling that gives the impression of a car almost twice the price. The Rio SX 5DR comes standard with LED lighting, 17” wheels, a 6-speed automatic, Bluetooth connectivity, a UVO telematics system with a backup camera, and a many other features. The model I drove added leather seats, navigation, a sunroof, and heated seats in a premium package that takes the base $17,900 price up to $23,000. The 1.6L DI engine makes 138 HP and 123 lb-ft of torque for 36 MPG on the highway. I can’t rave enough about the Rio SX. For more information visit www.kia. com.
2014 MAZDA 6 TOURING The mid-size segment is the bread and butter for manufacturers. In the midsize segment, customers are being treated to sexy designs, premium touches, advanced safety and telematics, highly efficient engines which yield highway MPG’s in the high 30’s all at an introductory price in the low 20’s. The Mazda 6 has been re-designed to better compete with the segment and the results are impressive. Using the KODO design, the Mazda 6 kept the integrity of the philosophy in its execution while using the SKYACTIV-Drive components to yield fuel efficiency of 37 MPG on the highway from a 2.5L I-4 that makes 184 HP and 185 lb-ft of torque. I drove a six-speed manual touring edition and was pleased with the driving dynamics. The Mazda 6 also offers a diesel option which is unique in the segment. Pricing on the Touring begins at 23,445. 2014 MAZDA CX-5 GRAND TOURING AWD Mazda has already displayed an ability to forge its own path and create classleading vehicles. Since finalizing the separation from Ford, Mazda has charted a course heavy on its engineering might with a focus on a flexible architecture and components with SKYACTIV, premium materials and features from the product planning side, and efficient yet competent engines that deliver great fuel economy paired with the sporty dynamics you expect from Mazda. I drove the CX-5 last year and felt it could be the best driver’s crossover in its segment save for one thing, power. At 155 HP I felt cheated, in a way, because everything about the CX-5 was great. For the 2014 model year, everything is rectified with a 2.5L inline four that makes 184 HP and 185 lb-ft of torque. I’m like Goldilocks as the CX-5 is now just right with a perfect blend of premium telematics and comfort features, a durable chassis, solid driving manners, excellent styling and fuel economy with a minimal drop from the 25/31 rating to 24/30 MPG in the Grand Touring AWD I drove. The 2.5 L I-4 is naturally aspirated so I can envision a turbo in the future with power approaching 250-300 HP. Once can only wish. The CX-5 starts at $21,195 for the sport and $28,870 for the Grand Touring I drove. For more information visit www.mazdausa.com.

SANTA FE GLS The norms in the SUV market have simply changed. The body-on-frame SUVs of the 90’s and early 2000’s have given way to crossovers that have matched the roominess of their predecessors while providing car-like driving dynamics. Hyundai Santa Fe is a perfect SUV for the times as you get three different configuration options for 5, 6, and 7 passengers and a slew of technology and comfort features to match any competitor in its class. There is standard Blue Link with advanced diagnostic features that provide comfort for drivers. A great Blue Link feature which is perfect for parents like myself, is that you can define boundaries of where your vehicle can go and get alerts if your car ventures outside boundaries. Beyond Blue Link, the Santa Fe comes with 290 HP and 252 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic for 18 MPG city and 24 MPG highway in the all-wheel drive model I drove. The Santa Fe GLS is a well-equipped fuel size crossover that starts and $28,600. Visit www.hyundaiusa.com for more information. « FORD CMAX ENERGI I am a huge fan of electric propulsion and by the likes of things so are Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, Mercedes, Tesla, Nissan, and of course Ford. Electrification has so many benefits in efficiency and power and has dramatically changed transportation. The biggest challenge has been price so as to spur widespread adoption. I drove the C-MAX Energi and was pleasantly surprised by the utility, the contrast, and the driving dynamics of the compact that came in at $36,240 delivered. According to Ford they have sold over 50,000 electrified vehicles this year and the C-MAX has more than done its part. It is a 5-door hatchback with room for a family of 5 and a decent amount of cargo space along with cabin features like SYNC with MyFord Touch, voice command, navigation, heated seats, a backup camera, a unique foot sensor liftgate, active park assist and so much more including an all-electric range of 21 miles on a full charge. There are three driving modes: an all-electric mode, a gas-engine-only mode which allows you to save the electric power for later utilization, and an automatic efficient mode which toggles between the gas engine and the all-electric modes. Another benefit is the MyFord Mobile app that allows owners to communicate with the vehicle remotely and can also help drivers locate charging stations. For Ford, aggregate data collected through MyFord Mobile allows the company to access consumer information that can be used to improve the owner experience. The C-MAX Energi is fun, functional, and capable. For more information, visit www.Ford.com. 2013 FORD ESCAPE SE The team in Dearborn has been on an impressive run since CEO, Alan Mulally took over and righted the ship with a singular focus on the Ford brand. The results on the balance sheet have been amazing but even better have been the products in the showroom. Ford dominates the truck segment, but it’s the compact crossover segment where my interest lies as I test drove the 2013 Ford Escape SE FWD. Consumers have already spoken loud and clear about the Escape with second quarter sales topping $72,983 and my week with Escape made it clear to see why. The Escape was recently re-designed with an abundance of style, power, technology and engine efficiency. With EcoBoost, the 1.6L I-4 engine was able to make 178 HP and 173 lb-ft of torque yet I was able to get 33 MPG on the highway. The Escape comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission and starts just north of $22,000. You also get SYNC with MyFord Touch which I happen to like and find easy to use, especially the voice command in SYNC. You also can get active park assist on the Escape along with blindspot monitoring. One feature I love is the motion sensor under the rear bumper that can lift the rear liftgate when you put your foot underneath. There is a lot to love in the Escape as its sales can attest. 2013 MAZDA CX-9 The Mazda CX-9 has been a venerable contender in the full-size crossover segment, sporting better equipment than most of its competitors for a while including a Bose surround sound system. For 2013 Mazda upgraded the front end to adopt the new KODO design philosophy. The interior of the Mazda CX-9 also receives some upgrades in addition to its telematics systems. The sound system has been upgraded with functionality that allows you to rewind the satellite radio. The powertrain on the CX-9 carries over with the 3.7L V6 making 273 HP and 270 lb-ft of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic. The CX-9 is still highly competitive in its segment and the AWD model I drove got 18 MPG city and 22 MPG on the highway. Pricing on the touring model AWD starts at $36,375. 2013 CHEVY TRAVERSE The Chevy Traverse has been a success and for 2013 it receives an entire re-design which adds several new technologies and comforts to allow its continued leadership in the full-size crossover segment. The 2013 Traverse is powered by the 3.6L V6 which makes 288 HP and 270 lb-ft of torque in its Traverse duty. The Traverse can tow 5200 lbs and the AWD model I drove got 23 MPG on the highway. 20” wheels is standard along with Park Assist, power liftgate and so much more. The AWD starts at $42,574. 2013 CHEVY SUBURBAN 4WD LTZ Some vehicles are in the rarefied air where they define their own category. The Chevy Suburban is one such vehicle. When one sees a black Suburban, they instantly thinks of power and begins to wonder which dignitary or celebrity is in it. The Suburban is just in its own league and for 2013 GM made sure the icon has not been altered as a new model is due out in 2014. The Burban is fuelefficient with a base 5.3L V8 engine with active fuel management that gets 21 MPG on the highway mated to a six-speed automatic that shifts a motor that makes 320 HP and 335 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain can also take biofuel as it is E85-capable. The Suburban LTZ starts at $59,190. For more information visit www.cheverolet. com.

« JETTA HYBRID SEL PREMIUM
VW has been enjoying tremendous success as of late. Having reached the pinnacle of global manufacturing in sales, years ahead of schedule, one can marvel at how VW was able to achieve such rapid success. The diversity of energy sources for their powertrains has certainly helped VW and electrification has played a larger role for the entire group, especially sibling Porsche who has thrived in that regard. The Jetta Hybrid I drove did not have the exhilaration and acceleration of Porsche but delivered tremendous fuel economy along with an abundance of driver comforts that made my week in the DC metropolitan area a delectable experience. The Jetta, already a consistent top 10 seller in its category, was well equipped from the Fender audio system to the heated seats to the touchscreen navigation system. The Jetta Hybrid SEL was also impressive in its driving dynamics, powered by a 1.4L I-4 with a combined 170 hp output. The Jetta Hybrid gets 42 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway and the SEL Premium I drove is priced at $31,180. For more information, visit www.vw.com.
« CHRYSLER 200 S TOURING
In 2011 the world was re-introduced to Chrysler courtesy of Detroit native, Eminem along with a new campaign, “Imported from Detroit”. The introduction came via a 2-minute ad during the Super Bowl and the vehicle featured was the Chrysler 200. To say the introduction was a success would be an understatement as the interior improvements to the 200 and the awareness brought by the campaign doubled sales and powered a resurgence with year over year sales increases. The 200 S, with a 3.6L V6 engine that makes 283 HP, is alone in its power output, yet it serves as a placeholder for a new model that has drawn raves from dealers who have seen it and will feature technology like a first-in-class 9-speed automatic transmission. The S has a 6-speed automatic transmission and a slew of telematics features including the award-winning Uconnect which makes the 200 S a tremendous value at a base price of $23,360. Additional features like a 40 GB hard drive, Bluetooth streaming, dual chrome exhaust tips, and 18” wheels are available for a slight increase in price. For more information, visit www.chrysler.com.
« NISSAN JUKE NISMO
Nissan, with their unique crossover, has been able to carve a niche in the compact crossover segment which was once just vehicles with utility, cargo room and function. The Juke is simply fun to drive and uniquely styled with unique controls that shift from climate to engine efficiency. The Juke also has a great sound system which made for a great motoring experience in my week with this treasure. I was actually driving the NISMO edition of the JUKE which adds more power from the 1.6L 4-cylinder engine making 197 HP mated to a 6-speed manual that was smooth to shift and truly exhilarating to maneuver. The body cladding and added body kit of the NISMO JUKE is attractive and aggressive as is the available color schemes. The racing seats are perfect for both driver and passenger and the most surprising thing was the combination of value and fuel efficiency as the JUKE NISMO I drove was priced at $25,410 and got about 31 mpg on the highway. NISSAN PATHFINDER PLT 4X4 The evolution of the Nissan Pathfinder has been interesting to watch. It has evolved from a rugged 5-passenger truck to a 7-seater body-on-frame to the latest, a 7-passenger crossover which appears to be the right mix and a more than competent contender in the segment. The new Pathfinder is comfortable and loaded with every imaginable feature. I drove a Platinum 4x4 edition in the DC metropolitan area. I was amazed at the refinement, impressed by the capability and surprised by the fuel-efficiency found in this full-size crossover SUV. With a 3.5L V6 that makes 260 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque mated to a CVT, the 4x4 Pathfinder Platinum gets 25 mpg on the highway. You get 20” alloys and a 5000-lb towing capacity. You also get a variety of interior goodies like an HDD navigation system with Sirius XM NavTraffic and NavWeather, Zagat Survey Restaurant Guides, an 8” monitor, DVD playback, a Bose audio system with 13 speakers and Bluetooth streaming, and so much more. You get a CVT with the Rogue and paired with the AWD system and the comfort upgrades of the SL package, it was more than adequate for commutes in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. For the 2014 model year, Ford has re-designed the Fiesta and made it both more stylish and more fun to drive. With a 1.6L I-4 engine that makes 120 HP and 112 lb-ft of torque, I found the power more than adequate to haul the 2578-lb subcompact in my drives on I-70 and around the DC metropolitan area. The 5-speed manual was smooth-shifting and exciting to maneuver. The Fiesta was equipped with SYNC with MyFord Touch, heated seats, navigation and nice finishing touches like a nice purple interior ambience. « TOYOTA RAV 4 LIMITED For the 2013 model year the Toyota RAV4 is all-new and loaded with improvements to make it more competitive in the compact crossover segment with a slew of options featuring loads of technology and premium touches. Toyota has made the new RAV4 more than competent to hold its own and even dominate the competition. I found the fit and finish on the Limited model I spent the week with, impeccable and comparable to more premium offerings. The rich leather and the beautiful color scheme drew an audience when I drove around town, especially from RAV4 owners. Under the hood, power is supplied by a 2.5L 4-cylinder which makes 176 HP and 172 lb-ft of torque while mated to a 6-speed automatic. The model I drove had AWD and also came standard with 18” alloy wheels. You can get a ton of comfort options added including navigation with a 6.1-inch touch-screen and backup camera display, Entune and JBL audio system, Bluetooth audio streaming, a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and so much more which brought the $28,410 base price to $31,869 including destination. NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5 SV The mid-size sedan market is probably the most competitive in the automotive industry. The top five automakers in the mid-size segment all enjoy annual sales in excess of 200,000 units with their offerings, so when new models are redesigned and introduced, hitting the sweet spot in product planning is imperative. The risks involved in the mid-size segment probably lend to the conservative styling and basic offerings often found in this segment, but lately everything has changed. For the 2013 model year Nissan has totally reworked the Altima and the results are sure to not only allow the Altima to maintain its top 5 spot but to enhance its progression toward supremacy. The Altima 2.5 SL comes with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that’s mated to a CVT and gets an amazing 38 mpg on the highway without any electrification. That number is a segment leader and with standard options like leather seats, Bluetooth, heated seats, a 9-speaker Bose sound system, and a unique tire pressure monitoring system that alerts you by horn if a tire has the wrong pressure, the Altima presents a great value in the SL trim for a base price of $28,050. FIAT 500 TURBO Nobody could have predicted the success of the Fiat 500. The stylish sub-compact has attracted buyers with diverse levels of income and the various packages have made the vehicles stand out with consumers. The 500 brand has expanded into an even larger offering and I was fortunate to spend some time with the Turbo model. The new Turbo model is between the base and the Abarth, making 135 HP from the 1.4L I4 MultiAir engine mated to a 5-speed manual and during my week of driving in the DC area I was in pure heaven. The Turbo is fast and responsive and I’d like to say it has a Goldilocks impact for daily drivers giving them the right power to shift lanes swiftly in traffic and also be fuel efficient with a 28/34 mpg city/highway rating. The base price is $19,500 on the Turbo and you can add features like satellite radio, heated seats and a great Beats audio package for a total of $22,350 including a $700 destination charge. « NISSAN SENTRA SL Manufacturers’ compact car offerings are having even larger relevance to brand identity as they serve as the entry point for millennial customers. Nissan has totally reformed and re-designed the Sentra. In fact I found the SL I spent a week with to be on par with the last generation Altima. The interior volume of the Sentra has grown as has the styling with LED lighting standard and available options like a navigation system with a 5.8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth streaming, heated leather seats, voice recognition, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and so much more, all powered by a 1.8 L 4-cylinder engine that makes 130 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque. Madden NFL 25 Review

I remember watching John Madden announce games in the 80’s and 90’s and fondly remember playing Madden on Sega Genesis and PlayStation 1. I was excited when I received my Madden 25 copy for review. Having Barry Sanders on the cover was apt because he exemplified the quintessential Madden player. Barry Sanders had an exciting running style with an ability to juke larger defenders and exhibit incredible balance and blazing speed. In 25 there is more control over runners with the ability to spin, hurdle, truck, execute a stiff-arm juke, use combos, and my favorite, the Marshawn Lynch-like Beast Mode that shook the Seahawks Stadium and drove the 12th Man wild. One of features I had missed in Madden was the historic teams, one of my favorites being the Minnesota ‘98 team with Randy Moss and Chris Carter. In Madden 25 I could build a team and reunite them. With the new Connected Franchise mode which builds on the Connected Player mode of 13, you can play as a player, a coach or an owner with both online and offline modes to play from. More players were added to last year’s Connected Player with Randall Cunningham being available and dozens of others like the late, great Sean Taylor and Deacon Jones. Randall Cunningham predated RG3 and Vick and I fondly remember a game against the Packers where he leaped over a player into the end zone. With Connected Franchise you can recreate the moment. You can control up to 32 teams and even create yourself as a character in the game via EA Game Face. Current players are also available or you can create an entirely new player from scratch. You can also build your Ultimate Team with Ray Lewis which is a great sendoff for his Super Bowl-winning sunset ride. Beyond Ultimate Team, there are several improved training modes to help people get familiar with new moves on offense and defense. Now Facebook integration is available which allows you to save your game and interact with friends. Madden 25 is the best one yet which is appropriate for the silver anniversary of the greatest sports gaming franchise ever with reports of a cumulative gross in excess of $4 billion. Toyznation has spoken. Madden 25 is a must-buy. For more information visit www.easports.com/madden-nfl

The phrase “all good things must come to an end” is apropos for the fate of NCAA 14. The settlement with EA after the class action suit led by Ed O’Bannon, has precluded future editions, but if this is the last edition it goes out with a bang. An improved Infinity Engine brings a new level or realism and improved dynamics for the player controls. The multi-dimensional Denard Robinson is the perfect embodiment of new features with better ability to evade and salvage plays. As usual, you have the ability to build your program and create a dynasty like Bear Bryant or Nick Saban. You can also improve your coaching abilities via 18 different levels, Coachstradamus being my favorite where you can learn your opponents’ tendencies and get a step ahead of them. TOYZ GUIDE VIDEOGAMES REVIEW by Damola Saints Row IV Publisher: Deep Silver Developer: Deep Silver Volition Platform: PS3, Xbox360, PC Genre: RPG
Rating: M Release Date: Out Now www.saintsrow.com
SAINTS ROW IV Who’s bad is all I can say as I play the Commander in Chief edition of Saints Row IV. As a fan of Saints Row, back when it was an Xbox exclusive, I truly enjoyed the experience. In the fourth installment, all hell breaks loose and that is a great thing! You begin literally saving the world with your special ops team, become president and then fight aliens to save the planet. What I love is the numerous options to personalize your character. I saw so many hairstyles that I spent hours just getting the hair, voice, demeanor, smack talk, build and skin tone right. You can be any sex, race or build that you can imagine along with having added characteristics. There are also tons of guns, lots of cars, and numerous missions within missions to keep you busy exploring the world of Saints Row. You can get lost just immersed in the realism of the dialogue and the detail in the graphics of the characters you encounter in this massive first-person shooter. You also get great music to play in the cars you jack to perform your missions, so make sure to check out the soundtracks. In Saints Row, you can be the ultimate badass president you want to be with the fate of the free world in your hands. Go forth, be a saint and get IV today. TOYZ GUIDE Samsung Galaxy Camera Review by Damola
SAMSUNG GALAXY CAMERA By definition, I am a business and lifestyle journalist who focuses on the 18-49 demographic. In my capacity I cover a wide range of topics, attend far-reaching events and meet some very interesting people. In my review of the Samsung Galaxy camera I sought to capture some of my life and create a photo book using the images I was able to shoot with this incredible connected device. As I received my passes to the 57th inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, I thought it would be appropriate to begin there and was excited that the team at Samsung was able to oblige my request. The Galaxy camera has an incredible 21x zoom, a 16-megapixel sensor, and a 23-milliliter aperture lense. What I love is its 4.77-inch HD Super Clear LCD screen which allows you to view pictures but also use the wide array of apps available as the Galaxy camera has Google Play and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The Galaxy camera is the ultimate connected device and I enjoyed the Verizon 4G LTE coverage which came in handy while I was covering the wide range of events you will see. I also spent time with my then 16-year old son at Carnegie Mellon who is there studying electrical and computer engineering. These pictures were not all work but a display of how much function the Galaxy camera possesses with a wide range of filters and the integration of apps like Dropbox, Facebook and Twitter which came in handy while I covered the debut of the Galaxy S4 and the launch of the Cadillac CTS. I also got great pictures on the 4th of July in the nation’s capital and was reluctant to return the camera after 6 months with the treasured device. I thought a perfect finale would be shots of the White House from outside the gate which I took with the assistance of the Crimson photo-eAzl that I also reviewed, a must-have accessory for the Galaxy camera. Enjoy these photos. I will be posting them on our website and even creating Instagram and Tumblr accounts so we can interact and dialogue further. The Galaxy camera costs $449.99 with Wi-Fi only and $549.99 for the Verizon 4G LTE model I reviewed. For more information visit www.samsung.com.

TOYZ GUIDE Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 Review by Damola
LENOVO THINKPAD TABLET 2 As Microsoft made the transition to Windows 8.0 and subsequently Windows 8.1 to take better advantage of a trend they originally began decades ago with the touch interface, the challenge of using capable OEM solutions that fulfill the vision becomes more evident. Lenovo, which purchased the hardware business of IBM in 2005, is a world-class manufacturer of electronics and is more than capable of answering a challenge that even Microsoft struggled with. Tablet computing has been dominated by ARM-based products, predominantly Apple’s iPad, but Lenovo produces a superior experience with the ThinkPad Tablet 2. It weighs just 565 grams and while using an Intel Atom processor with a Dual Core 1.80 GHZ processor, virtually any function you need to perform in a daily notebook becomes a reality. It runs on x86 with a 32-bit chip along with an Intel HD SGX545 GFX integrated graphic card so hard core gaming is out of the question, but full document editing, watching movies, video conferencing, and web surfing are pretty much a go. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 has 2GB of RAM which is adequate for the 32-bit machine. I enjoyed watching movies with my Xfinity account on the IPS screen and having flash support was a huge plus for me. The ability to consume content on the go was a huge factor along with typing with a keyboard. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 has an available Bluetooth keyboard with stand along with a digitizer pen and a sleek leather bound sleeve. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 has journeyed with me around the country and truly replaces my laptop. I can work on the go and its lightweight form factor makes it easy to travel with. I would recommend the ThinkPad Tablet 2 to anyone in the market for a tablet to replace their laptop and at prices around $500 it presents an incredible value proposition. TOYZ GUIDE HOME THEATER Review by Damola PHORUS PLAY-FI™ PS1 SPEAKER Sound fidelity has become more essential and fortunately more accessible with the evolution of audio media and playback devices. As a music lover I enjoy listening to music through my earphones when I travel, yet when I’m at home and my favorite songs come on I often prefer to blast them out loud. The versatile Phorus Play-Fi™ PS1 speaker allowed me to do this in a simple way. This small but effective speaker allows listeners to clearly stream media from an Android or Apple mobile device through a simple Wi-Fi setup. Once the Wi-Fi is set up, it is easy to connect the PS1 to devices from anywhere in your home. I enjoyed being able to stream music from both my Android phone as well as my Android-based Kindle Fire. Through the free Phorus app you can access your music files and create new playlists or play by category like genre or artist. You can also access Internet radio or play audio through apps like Pandora. I was also able to connect to the speaker through Bluetooth which was great since I often stream music through my Spotify app. The significant appeal of the Phorus speaker is the capability of linking multiple speakers into a system similar to a home audio system and with many options. (Phorus actually offers a receiver that can be used with an existing home audio system.) You can sync multiple speakers in multiple rooms to stream audio from one device or individuals in your household can stream through individual speakers from separate devices and there is a convenient dock to place devices on while playing. Other cool aspects of the PS1 are that it can be enjoyed wirelessly or can be powered through a power adapter and the speaker is small and lightweight which makes it easy to transport. Like current technological conveniences, the Phorus app will update for free as services and features are enhanced or added. The Phorus Play-Fi™ PS1 speaker is priced at $199. Visit www.phorus.com for additional information.
BLACKBERRY MINI STEREO SPEAKER The Blackberry mini stereo speaker is a great accessory that pairs easily with virtually every Bluetooth-capable cell phone. The form factor and the compact nature of the speaker is notable, but don’t let the size fool you. The mini stereo speaker packs a hell of a punch and can illuminate and fill a room with rich sound. A practical use for the Bluetooth speaker is as a hands-free device in your vehicle where the speaker can fit easily on the visor. Another great use is to fit it on the sling of a backpack to serve as a personal boombox as you walk or bike. It’s easy to recharge the Bluetooth speaker via a micro USB port. TOYZ GUIDE GADGETS REVIEW by Damola SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 (SPRINT) The advancement in the mobile phone industry has been rapid and transformative. Your smartphone is no longer just a device to communicate and check your email. The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is a quantum leap in mobile phones with an enormous amount of functionality. The Galaxy S 4 is everything from a language translator to a remote control to a video camera, a pocket camera, a media player with group play functionality, a pedometer, and of course, a phone. The S 4 redefines everything you think about Samsung with a 4.7” Super AMOLED display and the ability to easily expand storage with up to an additional 64GB via a microSD card. You can also easily share files via NFC and a groundbreaking promotion with Jay-Z highlighted that feature. The Magna Carta Holy Grail album was available for free only to Galaxy S3, S4, and Note 2 owners and you could share the album with other Galaxy owners. There are tons of other cool features like the ability to control your screen with your eyes as the camera tracks your eyeballs’ movement and the use of hand gestures. The S 4 is a definitive statement by Samsung of its excellence in mobile technology. For more info, visit www. samsung.com.

GALAXY NOTE 3 The Galaxy Note 2 and I were virtually inseparable. I loved the functionality and its super-sized Super-AMOLED display. For the Note 3 everything is better and I venture to say the Note 3 is probably the best smartphone on the market. It is not just the 5.5” display or the Qualcomm 800 series quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM (overseas models have an octa-core chipset fabricated by Samsung) or the ease of use of the S Pen or the ability to use the multi-screen feature to insert pictures from your Galaxy into your emails, it’s how it all comes together. The Note 3 is the perfect companion for the entrepreneur as you can use productivity suites like Excel or prepare presentations while also simultaneously listening to music or watching a video or posting to social media or any variety of tasks that the 3GB of RAM and quad-core processor can facilitate. The Note 3 also fulfills the original vision of the tablet PC with simply the best handwriting software on the market. The Note 3 is a must-have for any working professional and entrepreneur. HTC ONE The competition for mobile phone supremacy is growing ever fierce and the game is not for those faint of heart. HTC has had a storied history as of recent and I have been a fan of their devices since my Windows Touch Pro2 with the tilting keyboard. In the current generation battle, I was eager to get my hands on the HTC One and compare my experience with it to my experiences with other phones like the Apple iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S 4. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and frankly preferred the HTC One for several functions including the camera with its rich composition that gave me the best photos. HTC also excels with user interface and I love the ability to have your Twitter feed displayed as tiles on your home screen which updates easily. Sound quality is another area that the HTC One excels in with its speakers naturally placed in the front. The Beats Audio integration is also a favorite of mine. It’s the perfect equalization for hip-hop with the intense bass vibrations. Where the One really thrives, however, is in its solid build and design esthetic. It is a perfectly crafted toy with a premium feel and a slim design. I tested a Sprint version and deals are to be had currently with some costing $199 for a 2-year agreement. iPhone 5s Steve Jobs did not invent the smartphone but what he did was revolutionary in how he took existing technology found in devices by Nokia, Blackberry, Palm, and HTC and redefined how they are utilized and function. Color displays now become crisper and emails and messaging become more useful. Pictures now become a photographic experience for the novice with an ability to share with the world and you can even make movies with your phone, edit them and share them. Your phone can also become a handheld gaming device. Multiple movies have been made and books have been written on how Jobs changed the industry with his vision and Ive’s execution and after Jobs’ untimely death, the question was, how does Apple transform the industry again while having a number of notable competitors including one of their contractors? The answer is the iPhone 5s. While its specs haven’t blown the industry away it serves as a bridge to the future with its adoption of ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture which is bringing 64-bit technology to mobile devices and is accelerating the shift to bring desktop computing to the palm of your hands. The 5s served as a glorious return for me as I haven’t been lured by Apple since the iPhone 4. The inclusion of biometrics in the form of a fingerprint scanner is a nice touch as are the improved camera, the dedicated M7 motion processor, and the multiple LTE bands making the iPhone 5s a true global phone. However, the 5s to me, is a bridge, a transition that will be fully realized when the A7 chipset and the big.LITTLE architecture fully bears fruit as Apple’s entire productivity suite from Pages to Note and iPhoto is available on the 5s for free. For Apple fanboys, the 5s is a dawn of a new era, an invitation to a journey no other device has gone on with upcoming devices that will finally get us to the destination. For more information, visit www.apple.com.
GALAXY GEAR I am an avowed technologist. The notion of electronics that can communicate with us has always been a passion of mine. KITT made me want to be an engineer when I saw Knight Rider in 1984 as well as Thunderbirds with the talking watch. The ability to talk to inanimate objects is simply fascinating and imbedded technology is not just a passion, it’s becoming something of a family trade as my son is attending Carnegie Mellon to study in this very field. Samsung was not the first to market the “Dick Tracy watch” but their solution is probably the most transformative for the industry. The Galaxy Gear functions as a Bluetooth pairing device that works with the Galaxy S 3 and newer phones to answer calls, take pictures, shoot video, and even record notes as I did during Peter Thiel’s address at the Under 20 Summit recently in NYC. During a presentation by a Cadillac executive I was able to take pictures of slides and while walking in NYC I was able to make use of the pedometer function. The Gear is a great first stop in the promise of what wearable tech can do. For more info, visit www. samsung.com.

LIFEPROOF FRĒ I swear by LifeProof. I can say unwaveringly that, to me, they build the most durable and functional cases for iPhone products and their only competitor, OtterBox, is now under the same ownership so the competition is none. I got my new iPhone 5s and though a dedicated case was not created yet, I trusted none other than the frē for the 5s to protect my investment. Save for preventing access to the fingerprint scanner, the case fit perfectly and passed the waterproof and shockproof test. In hindsight, my trust of LifeProof is in such high regard that I was willing to be inconvenienced for weeks without communication by testing the limits of the advertised protection. I had used LifeProof with my prior 4 and after a couple years of use I was able to sell my 4 and purchase my 5s. I anticipate similar protection with the frē and look forward to getting value on my investment that can be applied to my next iPhone. For more info, visit www.lifeproof.com.

LIFEPROOF SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 FRĒ CASE I swear by LifeProof for protection of my mobile phones. The multiple protections from shock, water, mud, and sand are a must for young or active smartphone users whose phones take a mountain of abuse in the course of a given day. Until now, only iPhones got the famed LifeProof protection, but now the Samsung Galaxy S 4 gets in on the fun via the frē. The frē provides total protection for the Galaxy S 4 including screen protection and waterproof protection. The frē is also shockproof so it makes the S 4 gain an additional measure of durability in addition to its polycarbonate case. The frē costs $79. For more information, visit www.lifeproof.com.

Speck CandyShell + FACEPLATE for iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 Finding a certified case for the new iPhone 5s can be a daunting task. Many manufacturers haven’t created an integrated solution for the biometric scanner that is also durable and stylish. Speck achieves on all fronts in addition to providing military-grade durability for shock. The screen on the CandyShell is highly responsive and I like the color scheme of red and black in the model I have been testing. Another thing I like is how the CandyShell preserves a lot of the functionality of the iPhone 5s. The Speck CandyShell + FACEPLATE costs $44.95. For more information, visit www.speckproducts.com.

Photo-eAzl I had reviewed the tablet eAzl previously and was impressed with its utility and durability but was even more impressed with the photo-eAzl. I had spent a period of months with the Samsung Galaxy camera and the photo-eAzl was a great companion and competent assistant. The best example of the utility of the photo-eAzl is through my photos of the White House taken outside the estate. The photo-eAzl allowed me to get incredible angles which took advantage of the 21x zoom camera and I was also able to get great tilt and sturdy shots. The photo-eAzl is a must-have for the photographer and aspirant who wants an affordable, compact eaZl to greatly enhance your shots and showcase your photographic vision. SPECK CANDYSHELL CARD FOR SAMSUNG GALAXY S 4 The Samsung Galaxy S 4 has been a global success for Samsung and I have sung the praises of its functionality. With such a valuable piece of technology, the question of how to protect it arises and in the case of Speck CandyShell Card how to add even more functionality. The CandyShell Card is perfect for the working professional who is always on the go – coffee, lunch, work, happy hour and with the ability to store 3 cards in the back securely you can have your ID card, credit card, one personal, one corporate and travel lightly. The casing is durable as is to be expected from Speck but having the ability to carry cards in a case for the S4 just enhances the experience with this great phone. MONSTER ISPORT FREEDOM WIRELESS HEADPHONES The innovation of Monster is always a delight to watch and experience. I tested the iSport Freedom wireless headphones and enjoyed their versatility and feasibility. I am an active person whether exercising, dancing or multi-tasking in or out of the home. One of my pet peeves is having headphone cords get tangled or caught on something like a cabinet knob then ripping the headphones off of my head. I loved the freedom of not worrying about these annoyances and enjoyed the benefit of experiencing sound through both of my ears at the same time via Bluetooth technology. The versatility of the iSport Freedom headphones allowed me to easily pair them to my phone and the Android compatibility allowed me to enjoy the controls conveniently located on the right outer earcup of the headphones. I was able to increase and decrease the volume, change music tracks, and pause and play with simplicity. I also enjoyed being able to answer or end phone calls with ease and talk through the mic with exceptional transmission. The iSport Freedom headphones are easy to charge, only taking about and hour and a half and once charged the headphones offer up to 10 hours of talk and/or music listening time! MONSTER EDGE DIAMOND TEARS HEADPHONES Monster has been at the forefront of the headphones business, having underpinned the success of Beats by initially creating the products that Dr. Dre endorsed. The range of products Monster produces is diverse and intriguing. The EDGE Diamond Tears is one such product that I’m fascinated with. Inspired by diamonds, the look is exotic and luminous which is something I have not seen in any other headphones. The sound is equally impressive as I was able to test the EDGE Diamond Tears with the iPhone 5s and the Samsung Galaxy S 4. The fidelity is rich with crisp highs, thick bass and booming bottoms. The microphone is clear and controls are easy to use. As Monster is apt to do, many of their products are collaborations with talented musicians and South Korean multi-talented artist, JYP, had input into the development of Diamond Tears. The Diamond Tears is a great product and retails for $299.95. For more information, visit www.monsterproducts.com.

I have multiple video game controllers, remote controls, mice, flashlights – you name it. Duracell Quantum alkaline batteries have been the perfect companion for me in the past month, using them with my multitude of electronics. I have been delighted by their performance. SANDISK 64GB WIRELESS MEDIA DRIVE As smartphones become more integral to our lives, especially for consuming media like music, video and pictures, the need to have the capability to expand the memory of our devices has risen, particularly for products like the phone and the Kindle which have fixed internal memory. The need to view your content easily between devices also exists so having a compact storage device with the ability to communicate with multiple devices is an incredible proposition. The SanDisk Connect Wireless media drive is one such device. It is the size of a small puck and can fit in your palm, yet it contains 16GB of storage along with Wi-Fi connectivity that does not actually require an Internet connection. I was able to pair it with my iPhone 5s, Galaxy S 4, and Galaxy Note 3 along with other devices and was able to play media simultaneously. SANDISK CONNECT WIRELESS FLASH DRIVE 32GB One of my pet peeves is having the need to expand storage after the purchase of mobile phones. Some manufacturers restrict the ability to add storage via a micro SD card which in turn puts one in a quandary of erasing media and files in order to increase capacity. SanDisk has a superb solution which in essence operates like your own personal cloud with a wireless flash drive device that operates like a router and allows you to connect to the Internet and use your Wi-Fi antenna to stream media from the thumb drive-size device. The compact size is amazing as it can fit in your pocket or a purse and can store up to 4GB of media content. I was able to use a number of different devices and phones including the HTC, iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S 4, Galaxy Note 3 and others. I love the ease in which I could upload files to the device and download. This device is a novel innovation with an easy-to-use app and great functionality. For more info visit www.sandisk. com.

MAD CATZ ARCADE FIGHTSTICK TOURNAMENT EDITION 2 www.madcatz.com
HIPSHOTDOT BY AIRDROP GAMING One has to love the ingenuity of the team behind HipShotDot. Hailing from Michigan and contributing to the burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit, Jim Murphy uses his experience as a Navy radar technician and industrial designer to create his gaming product. HipShotDot functions as a scope to improve your aim in first person shooter games and I had a blast using it with my Xbox 360 playing Halo 4 and my PS3 playing Saints Row IV. It is real easy to use and the red dot brings added realism to the gaming experience. At a price of $29 it is very affordable and the improved aim and added points you can earn and bonuses you can unlock are more than worth it. For more information, visit www.airdropgaming.com.

NVDIA SHIELD www.sheild.nvidia.com
MOTOROLA P4000 UNIVERSAL PORTABLE POWER PACK As mobile devices perform even more functions in our lives, the issue of power management comes to the forefront. Many approaches have been introduced from chipset SoC to just increasing the available battery size. Another solution is the external battery pack and my time with the Verizon P4000 power pack made by Motorola has been a literal lifesaver on many occasions. The P4000 is unique in how capable it is with the ability to charge 2 devices simultaneously, yet it is the size of an average smartphone you find in the marketplace. You can use the USB port or the integrated micro USB port to charge up your devices with the available 4000 mAh which, depending on your devices ranges from 1 ½ to 2 ½ times the battery. In 15 minutes you can add up to 2 more hours of talk time. The P4000 is available at www.verizonwireless.com for $79.99.
