Best of Oxford - 2015 winners announced For 12 years now, Oxford EAGLE readers have turned into voters who have been selecting the Best Bakery, the Best Sweet Tea, the Best Florist, the Best Pharmacy, the Best Firefighter, the Best Car Dealer and more for the annual Best of Oxford section you’re holding in your hands or reading online. For 12 years now, businesses and individuals have been calling The EAGLE almost as soon as balloting ended to see if the votes had been counted and the winners named, and then asking if they could spread the good word before this section came out. Once again, you have picked the people, the places and the things that members of the Lafayette-Oxford-University community like the best. Sure, it’s an unscientific way to pick winners, but we’ve been doing it this way for more than a decade and there is as much, or more, interest each year. We’ve included, as we do annually, the winners in each category as selected by

VOTING WINNERS Each year, we reward two voters — one from the online ballots and one from the paper ballots — with a $50 gift certificate to one of the winners’ businesses. This year’s winners are Tiffany Jones, from the paper drawing ballot, and Kelly Shinall, from the online drawing ballot.

online and paper-ballot voters, and we’ve also included the runners-up (in no particular order). You will also find feature stories on several of the winners and photos of several other top finishers. Again, we congratulate the winners of the Best of Oxford for 2016, and we look forward to doing this again next year.

BUFFALO WILD WINGS WOULD LIKE TO THANK OXFORD AND LAFAYETTE COUNTY FOR VOTING US ‘BEST WINGS’ THIS YEAR.

First National Bank of Oxford wins Best of the Best BY ROB SIGLER rob.sigler@oxfordeagle.com

First National Bank of Oxford has been chosen by readers of The Oxford EAGLE as the “Best of the Best” in the Best of Oxford contest. “We’re excited and honored that the folks of Oxford think that highly of us,” bank president Johnny Barrett said. “We are very thankful to be in Oxford for over 100 years and to the people of Oxford in honoring us in this way.” The bank has been a staple of Oxford for more than 100 years and has been able to keep that personal touch while also keeping up with the advances in technology, according to Barrett. “It’s a combination of know-

ing our customers, the market and being up to date with the latest technology,” Barrett said. “Those things make our customers satisfied and enjoy the banking experience.” Barrett said there are “lots of good banks in town offering the same sorts of products and provide good customer service,” but FNB has the advantage of longevity and being run by folks who are invested in Oxford. “We do have a genuine interest in the customer and are not just out to sell them a product,” Barrett said. “We base it upon what their needs are and not what we’re trying to sell them. We treat them like family and a lot of them are our neighbors.” FNB employs 65 and many of them have been with the bank

for a number of years. “Several have been with us for more than 10 years and several are natives of Oxford,” Barrett said. “This is really a tribute to our employees.” Barrett said community service is another aspect of First National Bank that puts them at the forefront. FNB supports several community causes financially and by employees volunteering time. “I think over the years we’ve just plugged into the community in a lot of ways by supporting community causes and being involved in the community,” Barrett said. “We support a wide range of nonprofits, youth leagues and churches. FNB folks can be seen in various roles volunteering their time.”

Malco/Premier Lanes at top for entertainment BY ALLEN BREWER news@oxfordeagle.com

Malco Oxford Commons and Premier Lanes hit a double strike by winning the Best Family Entertainment spot in Oxford. The Malco at Oxford Commons, built in 2013, received its adjoining neighbor, Premier Lanes, on May 15 last year. The movie and bowling facilities offer people of all ages and families a fun time at a reasonable cost. Already having one Malco theater in town, the company took a risk by building on the then mostly vacant Commonwealth Boulevard. Now a thriving community of hotels, houses and two Oxford schools, the Oxford Commons has proved to show the power of patience and planning.

Last year, Malco took an even bigger risk by attaching a bowling alley to its theater. The bowling alley also proved to be a hit with the children and to the community of Oxford. “We have a vacuum of entertainment in Oxford,” said Selby LaBarre, general manager of Premier Lanes. “We have several places for entertainment like bowling, plus a nice arcade, café and bar.” The bowing lanes offer guests not only quality bowling, but also host a variety of arcade games for children and a café and bowling lounge for parents. Designed in a “Leisurely, Oxford/Ole Miss flavor,” Premier Lanes also offers its customers an interactive gaming experience. The Malco’s Best X gaming program allows bowlers SEE MALCO, 13

Graduate named Best New Addition to Oxford BY ALYSSA SCHNUGG alyssa.schnugg@oxfordeagle.com

Oxford’s residents and visitors watched construction of the Graduate Oxford hotel on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and North Lamar Boulevard for almost two years. In fall 2015, the hotel opened its doors, welcoming guests to Oxford. However, it’s not just the hotel guests who have appreciated the new hotel and its adjoining café and restaurant. Oxford residents have enjoyed it as well — enough to vote it the Best New Addition to Oxford in the annual Oxford EAGLE Best of Oxford contest. The hotel is a collaboration of

Coming up Hoover said this fall at the hotel, beverage manager Chip Moore will introduce an “aged” cocktail program at The Coop, which will feature cocktails that have aged in bourbon barrels. “Also, later this summer, we will be introducing a lobby breakfast buffet on the weekends with a custom bloody Mary bar,” he said. Whether you stop in for breakfast, to pick up an order of fresh chicken salad or pimento cheese, or to grab a chicken-on-a-stick after enjoying the nighttime entertainment on the Square, Oxonians of all ages are well-acquainted with Lindsey’s Chevron, located on the corner of North Lamar Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue. Lindsey’s has operated on the Square in one capacity or another for 28 years, beginning as a service station, and expanding to its current model as a full-fledged convenience store in 2001. Owner Lindsey Hill didn’t have to think long at all for his favorite part of running his business. “Meeting the people,” Hill sim-

service to others,” he said. “You know, the girls here, they get to know the customers real good, a lot of times they have their stuff ready when they come in the door. They know what they want, and I think that means a whole lot, instead of going to a company-owned store where somebody really doesn’t care — if you buy it, you buy it, if you don’t, you don’t.” Hill said this effort to provide the best possible service to customers has enabled Lindsey’s to amass an impressive group of regulars, with whom the staff has built personal relationships. However, you don’t get to the point Lindsey’s has gotten to without the help of quality products to go with effective customer service. “The plate lunches are really good,” Hill said. “I’ve got a lady that’s been with me probably 12 years that has owned a couple of kitchens around Oxford, and she had a good following anyway. We’ve acquired the

chicken salad and the pimento cheese from Mr. Levy, the original Mr. Levy’s recipe from the Jitney Jungle, and we got a bunch of Mrs. Levy’s sweets.” As Lindsey’s moves forward, Hill said that there aren’t any concrete plans to change or add anything, particularly considering the success and following the business has amassed already. “We’ll add a little here and there if we think customers ask for it enough, but basically don’t fix what’s not broken,” he said. In the meantime, customers can continue to find Hill and his staff cranking out quality service on a daily basis. “I’m glad there’s not eight days in a week, because I’m here every day, seven days a week,” Hill said. For Hill, though, everything about his business always comes back to one person — the customer. “We really appreciate the support from the community,” he said. “You know, if it wasn’t for the customers, we wouldn’t be here. I hope we’re doing something right.”

Southside on Square captures Oxford’s arts scene BY REID POSEY news@oxfordeagle.com

Sitting at its location at 150 Courthouse Square, Southside Gallery has become not only a landmark institution for the town of Oxford, but moreover a central component of the town’s celebrated arts scene, and once again, it has been named by readers as Oxford’s Favorite Art Gallery. Since its inception in 1993, Southside Gallery has provided a platform for artists on a local, state and regional level to showcase their works in the unique setting of the historic Oxford Square. It is these artists, whose work is prominently displayed on the walls of Southside Gallery, that co-owner and manager Wil Cook credits as being the source of Southside’s

continued success as Oxford’s preeminent destination for art lovers. “The artists we represent are what makes us what we are,” Cook said. “We have a lot of local artists who exhibit with us, we’re very lucky to have them. That’s what makes the gallery.” Each month, Southside Gallery features a different collection from different artists, and for each artist’s exhibition, the gallery hosts a reception that enables art enthusiasts and other attendees the chance to interact with these artists and learn about their work on a firsthand basis from the artists themselves. “Currently we have Younok Jung — her work is hanging now,” Cook said. “This work will be up until June 4. Then, the next exhibit after that is a landscape exhibit

that will feature a lot of local artists, and artists from around the region, primarily Mississippians, but there are other artists from other states that this exhibit will feature.” Southside Gallery’s role extends beyond the simple function of a traditional art gallery, however. Southside also operates as a venue for an assortment of events, such as private parties, wedding rehearsal dinners, receptions and various other functions. At any rate, Cook never forgets who he has to thank for Southside’s perennial status as Oxford’s favorite place to indulge its artistic side. “We’re really excited that the local citizens voted for us again,” Cook said. “We appreciate the local support.”

Oxford-University United Methodist is top church BY ALLEN BREWER news@oxfordeagle.com

Oxford-University United Methodist Church might be old, but when it comes to its outreach programs, the church is churning out fresh, new ideas. With its many ongoing community service programs and hospitality to new members, the church has proven you can be old and new at the same time. And those ideas helped the congregation that was founded in the 1800s win the spot for Oxford’s Best Church. A Methodist circuit rider named William Craig founded the first Methodist church in Oxford on Van Buren Avenue in 1836, closely located to what is now the First Baptist Church gym. OUUMC later moved to Jackson Avenue,

and in 1937 constructed its first buildings on University Avenue where it still stands today. “Serving the community is a vital part of who we are,” said lead pastor Eddie Rester. “We constantly strive to offer opportunities to our church members. We believe that faith is best grown and expressed when we serve others.” Some of the church’s community projects include: Oxford’s food pantry, More than a Meal, the community Thanksgiving service, Habitat for Humanity and Doors of Hope. Some other organizations the church works with include the Boys & Girls Club and Angel Tree. The church also plans mission trips to destinations as far away as SEE CHURCH, 29

CHURCH: Mission trips are a highlight for members FROM PAGE 28 Jamaica and as close as the Mississippi Delta. In the last trip to Jamaica, the missionaries motivated and tutored children, painted part of the school, helped lead two services at a local church and visited a hospital and nursing facility. “We feel we helped to encourage local people and added a bit of cheer to their lives,” said church member Jean Shaw. “We cannot say we made a big impact, but we worked very hard for five days and got great welcomes from the local people. The trip did make a big impact on our team’s lives. We became a family and our work showed us the value of sharing our time and talents with others.” OUUMC also has a large impact on University of Mississippi students, guiding them to make good decisions and encouraging them to worship with fellow Christians. The church uses a host family system that allows students

to be “adopted” by local church families who invite them home to eat meals with them, give them support in tough times and provide them with a home away from home. “We are blessed to have them in our midst,” said Allyson Willis, OUUMC’s director of college ministries. “They bring life, curiosity, creativity and push us all to deepen our walk with Christ as we see them pursuing Him with a passion.” When it comes to hospitality, no one is better then the members of the OUUMC, members say. Members work hard to help each other, the community and the world one step at a time. “Our church is a family,” said member Liza Frugé. “Our congregation is a community that supports, loves and cares for each other every day. Whether at church, school, in town, at the ball field or wherever, I know if I see my church family it’s an automatic smile and a hug.”

Best Kept Secret goes to Oxford’s Mama Jo’s BY ALYSSA SCHNUGG alyssa.schnugg@oxfordeagle.com

Despite serving up homemade Southern-style food since 1989 at the same location, Mama Jo’s Country Cookin’ Restaurant is still considered one of Oxford’s best-kept secrets and was recently awarded as such. Voters taking part in the annual Oxford EAGLE Best Of contest awarded Mama Jo’s with the Best Kept Secret award. Owner and cook Joester Egerson Brassell, known by

friends as Mama Jo, said she still has new customers come in. “They tell me they didn’t know about this place, or ‘I live right down the road but never knew you were here,’” Brassell said. The restaurant, located near the intersection of Molly Barr Road and North Lamar Boulevard, is small and can get crowded quickly, especially for Sunday brunch, but Brassell said she’s in no rush to change anything. “Maybe we’ll expand,” she

said. “One day. We’ll see.” Brassell said she was excited about winning the award and believes it’s not just the food that keeps her customers coming back. “We try to greet them with love and keep them with their fried cornbread,” she said. Brassell learned to cook by watching her mother. At about 5 years old, she baked her first cake and fried her first chicken. She cooks from the heart with a little help from above.

SECRET: The restaurant is located on North Lamar Boulevard and is open every day of the week FROM PAGE 32 “My cooking is a gift from God,” she said. “It’s spiritual. You know how people have gifts, well, I was gifted with cooking.” Brassell said she sometimes gets ideas, or “visions,” at night on ways to improve or tweak a recipe, or ideas for new items at the restaurant. “For instance, my chicken Rotel — everyone cooks chicken Rotel — but mine has a different ingredient than everyone else’s that God gave me one night in a vision,” she said, without giving up the secret ingredient. She doesn’t use cookbooks. All of her recipes are in her head and she makes sure each are executed properly in the restaurant, the same as any good chef. “I cook by taste and smell,” she said. While it might be Oxford’s Best Kept Secret this year, the restaurant has caught the attention of food lovers

for quite some time, including Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods’ Andrew Zimmern, who shot an episode of his show at the restaurant in 2012. Zimmern arrived, shared a meal with his with friend, John T. Edge, a food writer and commentator and the director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, and a six-person filming crew. They munched on a buffet of home-cooked Southern food including fried cornbread, smothered pork chops, neck bones, Rotel chicken, catfish, turnip green, boiled okra and other veggies. After the meal, Zimmern tweeted that his lunch at Mama Jo’s exceeded his expectations, calling it “great food.” Mama Jo’s is located at 1503 N. Lamar Blvd. and is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. An all-you-can-eat buffet is available every day. Breakfast is served from 6 to 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

It has always been a dream of executive chef Kelly English to open a restaurant on the Square in the town where he went to college. English, who has been a part of restaurants in New Orleans, Biloxi and Memphis, saw that dream become a reality in August last year when he opened The Second Line of Oxford. The restaurant has been a huge success with patrons and has been selected as the Best of the Best New Restaurants by readers of The Oxford EAGLE. “It’s been a good journey since we began in August,” said Back in Oxford English, selected last year as manager Reece Smith. “We’re

The restaurant was a favorite for English during his college days. “You could go in for breakfast or lunch and you could have country-fried steak and all kinds of stuff,” said English, who added a similar Smitty’s country fried steak to The Second Line menu. Prior to being Smitty’s, Grundy’s operated at the location where legendary author William Faulkner was known as a regular. The Second Line in Oxford is quickly gaining the reputation of being the restaurant of legends as it creates the everyday feel of New Orleans through authentic food.
