TRAGEDY STRIKES BOSTON MARATHON

One suspect dead and one in custody for brutal attack SHANNON MCMAHON News Assistant

On April 15 the annually celebrated Boston marathon turned tragic when two bombs exploded at the marathon site, killing three and injuring hundreds. Following the incident, the FBI released photos and a video of the two suspected bombers on April 18, asking for the help of the American people in identifying the suspects. Almost immediately after images were released, 26–year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev and brother 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were identified as the men pictured. Tamerlan was killed in a gun fight with authorities on Friday, April 19. His brother was captured after a manhunt in Watertown on Friday also. The investigation of what is being called a terrorist attack is still underway, but the tragedy is weighing heavily on Americans. The annual Boston Marathon began normally on Patriot’s Day with no sign of potential attacks. Sweeps of the area had been made by officials throughout the duration of the race to ensure safety, but authorities failed to detect the bombs that were left at the site close to an hour before they exploded. The bombs were improvised explosive devices containing bits of metal, and ball bearings that were placed in black nylon duffel bags or backpacks, with one bomb being described as a pressure cooker. The explosives detonated about two hours after the winner crossed the finish line, while more than 5,700 runners had yet to finish. Other runners continued to cross the line until 2:57 p.m., which was just eight minutes after the explosions. The violent blasts blew out windows on adjacent buildings, but did no further structural damage. Junior Lauren Merced was afraid that the attack may have been an indication of more to come, stating: “I was scared that the Boston marathon blast was a diversion tactic, and I felt security should have been heightened downtown.” With millions confused and frightened, social media sites took the news in a frenzy, causing many conflicting reports as to how many bombs had actually been found, and whether or not the nearby JFK Library was under attack as well, after it was reported to be on fire. It was later documented that the fire was due to unrelated building issues. Many University students discovered news of the events on social media sites and shared immense empathy for Boston, in addition to fear for themselves. Junior Meg Jaron says of the incident, “I was scared. I was in school when I found out through Facebook. I just wonder what their reasoning was.” Sophomore Erica Crespo learned of the events while in class, and later verified the news online. “I was at school when I found out. These two girls were talking about it, and I hadn’t known what they were talking about. As I was overhearing I asked them what happened. Then I looked it up on my phone. I was scared because usually big cities are targeted for things like that to send a message by whoever is doing it.” When asked about the recent discovery and death of one suspect, Crespo said: “There’s always going to be someone looking to send a message, because it’s so unpredictable. It would help if they caught these guys, but there’s always the question of what’s going to happen next, whose going to do something next.” In addition to the 3 killed in the attacks, 183 individuals were wounded, experiencing amputation, horrific dismemberment, and intensive shrapnel mutilation. Immediately following the blast, emergency response teams and civilians acted to help the injured and remove others from the area, with nearby hotels evacuated. The American Red Cross also helped concerned friends and family members receive information about runners and casualties. The Boston Police Department then promptly set up a helpline for people concerned about relatives or acquaintances, and Google Person Finder activated their disaster service under Boston Marathon Explosions to record known information about missing persons as a publicly accessible file. President Obama addressed the nation just three hours after the attack, stating that while the perpetrator(s) were still unknown, the government would “get to the bottom of this” and that those responsible “will feel the full weight of justice.” He later described the bombing as an act of terrorism,

declaring, “Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror.” President Obama also issued a proclamation ordering flags to half-staff until April 20 on all federal buildings as “a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on April 15, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts.” Later in the week, the FBI obtained images of the men they believed to be responsible for the bombing: Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and brother Dzhokar Tsarnaev. According to the FBI, one of the men pictured was seen placing a backpack at the scene minutes before the second bomb exploded. The suspects reportedly traveled to the US from the Russian region close to Checnya, and have been living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The spectators that were killed in the bombings included: Krystle M. Campbell, 29, a female restaurant manager from Medford, Massachusetts; Lü Lingzi, 23, a female Chinese national and Boston University graduate student from Shenyang, Liaoning; and Martin Richard, 8, a boy from the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. Additionally, the Tsarnaev brothers shot and killed 26-year-old MIT campus police officer Sean Collier. Following this, the men hijacked a car and forced the car’s owner to obtain $800 from an ATM. The man was released after withdrawing the money. The police then followed the men into Watertown, Massachusetts, and engaged in a gun battle. Tamerlan sustained injuries after being shot and hit by the vehicle his brother used to escape from police, while Dzhokhar managed to escape. Tamerlan later died of his injuries in Mount Auburn Hospital. Dzhokhar fled on foot after abandoning a stolen SUV. Following this, residents of Watertown were asked to stay indoors as authorities engaged in a manhunt that lasted for the duration of the day. Dzhokar was found the evening of April 19 by a Watertown resident who noticed that the tarp on his boat had been cut and covered in blood. After realizing that there was a bleeding individual inside of the boat, the resident notified authorities. The man in the boat was confirmed to be Dzhokar, and after several hours police were able to capture the man through means of thermal imaging and flash bang grenades. Dzhokar is now being held in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, with serious injuries to the throat, leaving him unable to speak. Many victims of the marathon bombing are being treated in the same facility. While countless individuals are still questioning the reason for the attacks and are deeply disturbed by the situation, the closing of the manhunt has visibly given many Americans more comfort and closure. Dr. Brandon Adams, University Psychology professor feels that the incident is most troubling to those in the Boston area right now, stating: “Most people, ninety nine percent are not going to be affected. Obviously those in the immediate vicinity will be on edge. When things don’t directly affect you people have a harder time emphasizing and people forget. Most people--an overwhelming majority-- are not going to think about it after the next big thing happens in a week or two.” Bostonians remain resilient and supportive in the wake of the tragedy. The investigation is ongoing and will continue to move forward as Dzhokar Tsarnaev recovers.

Anthony Weiner considers running for Mayor of NYC Former Congressman Weiner returns to politics after sex scandal ANA SOSA Contributor In a new opinion poll by NBC New York and Marist University, former congressman Anthony David Weiner took second place in popularity amongst the other Democratic candidates for NYC’s mayoral candidacy. First place went to Christine Quinn, the city council speaker, who is running for Mayor in the coming election and has been campaigning since Mar. 10. The results of the poll are surprising to many since Anthony Weiner has not become part of the race yet. The poll has raised questions on whether the results of this poll will influence him to run for mayor or not. Many are surprised by his popularity and demand amongst the 1,100 registered democrats that were polled, since only two years ago Weiner was badly disgraced by a public sex scandal. The scandal, often referred to as “Weinergate” involved explicit pictures of the former Congressman and the internet. Allegedly, the politician sent inappropriate pictures of himself to some of his female followers through the social media site Twitter. Pictures sent to a woman from Texas leaked and reappeared all over the internet. Soon after, Weiner was a popular target of headlines on print and online; they never failed to take advantage of the irony of his name to create many tabloids. Even though he admitted to never having a physical

relationship with any of the women he tweeted, the damage to his reputation that was caused by the incident led him to officially resign from his post in June 23, 2011. He was formerly a US representative for the 9th Congressional district of New York and had lasted almost 12 years in this position, never securing below 59 pecent of the vote. Weiner is slowly trying to re-appear in the media as a familiar face. On Monday April 15, Weiner did his first TV interview since the scandal. He apologized once again on NY1, a local network, for his past conduct and then

the book five years ago; it is one of the reasons why he was re-elected as congressman year after year. Mayor Bloomberg’s end of term is this coming November, and the elections are scheduled for Nov. 5. Weiner has not disclosed whether he will be running for Mayor or not, but the publication of his plan, which is similar to a campaign booklet, might be the first sign of his intentions. The former congressman also has a fund of $5.1 million dollars in the bank reserved primarily for the purpose of launching a campaign that he began to finance eight years ago after he lost the mayoral candidacy of 2005. If he doesn’t run, the money reserved for the campaign will have to be reinvested in another area. There are mixed opinions on his rumored candidacy. Many believe that he will not be able to surpass his defamed reputation and his shamed past. Senior Joe Cordaro is ready to forgive the congressman. He said, “I would vote for him, I think no press is bad press. His contact with the media, even if embarrassing and controversial, makes him more identifiable than many other candidates.” Cordaro insists that amongst the youth, Weiner will gain votes. Weiner’s decision on whether or not he will be seeking Mayor Bloomberg’s post is much anticipated. If he chooses to go for it, many people want to see how he will attempt to rebuild his reputation.

“I think no press is bad press.”

-Joe Cordaro, Senior

went on to lead a normal interview. On April 14 Anthony Weiner published a policy document titled “Keys to the City” in which he describes his plan to reform New York with sixty-four specific ideas. These aim to fix issues in areas such as transportation, health care, employment, and housing in the hopes of preserving NYC as the capital of the middle class. According to Weiner “What is good for the middle class is good for the city” his choice to focus on the proletariat has been his mantra since he originally wrote

North Korea threats subside

United States still working to diffuse nuclear program CHRISTIAN GOMEZ Arts Assistant Since North Korea’s declaration of war on Mar. 23 little information has left the country beyond threats and demands. The most recent news on the situation continues to be demands for removal of UN sanctions and the removal of U.S. military presence on the Korean Peninsula. South Korean military and United States military forces are currently participating in joint exercises on the Korean Peninsula that is putting North Korea on edge. Demands from Pyongyang say the U.N. sanctions and the removal of the military forces is the only way North Korean leaders will begin talks with the west. North Korea is threatening nuclear war against the United States and South Korea but it has become a common held belief that the current state of North Koreas nuclear program would make nuclear war impossible. Beyond the cyber-attacks on last month on South Korean news organizations and banks, along with the movement of missiles to the eastern coast of the country, North Korea has yet to use their military against anyone named in the official declaration of war. North Korea has very quickly moved from refusing to have any sort of information go public beyond outraged demands. Since the declaration of war North Korea has begun to make more realistic demands focusing on removing the sanctions imposed by the U.N. and removal of the current U.S. military during their exercises “Dialogues and war games can never go together,” says North Korea’s National Defense Commission. The South has responded that all the conditions the North is demanding are “incomprehensible and illogical.” Following this statement North Korea continued with daily threats of nuclear annihilation of “the nest of evil” in the United States. As of recent reports from The New York Times declare North Korea has been lighting up

their daily threats, removing the nuclear annihilation and moved on to merely accusing the United States of concocting a “crafty ploy”. The calming of tension from the North has come out of weeks of US and Southern forces mounting on the Korean peninsula. The US and South Korea have both decided to reduce military presence and are more willing to talk with North Korea since the end of daily destruction threats. Evan J.R. Revere, former state department expert on Asia, believes the now more open to talk North Korea comes out of reaching the top of the “Rhetorical escalatory ladder- Where do you go after you threaten to nuke, Los Angeles, Austin, Texas and Washington? The place to go after that is to carry out your threats, and they are not in the position to do that.” Hope is now emerging from experts and people like Revere who point the possible empty threats of North Koreas nuclear arsenal. Both sides of the Korean Peninsula have brought down the tension, and the South has—as of Thursday begun to end a week of tough talk with possible offers of dialogue with its neighbor to the North. The Southern Korean government has also begun to ship tuberculosis medicines to North Korea and has authorized factory owners from the South to attempt to meet with and consult North Korean officials on a possibility of opening up a joint industrial park that was in place before Pyongyang forced it closed after the declaration of war. The situation in Asia is beginning to relax and stepping away from the ledge giving hope to experts and the people of all countries involved. Waverly Bergwin, freshman, is thankful the situation is diffusing, saying “I am so tired of these threats going back and forth between nations and am glad they are stepping toward the path of peace after weeks of escalating threats.”

Students spend spring break helping Hurricane Sandy victims SHYAM NOOREDEEN Staff Writer

The University’s Center for Community Action and Research hosted its annual ‘Alternative Spring Break’ during March 25th - 28th during which sixteen students were hand selected from the New York City and Pleasantville campus to attend. This year’s theme was Hurricane Sandy recovery, assisting those greatly affected by the storm. Many seem to have forgotten the devastation people in Staten Island and the New York City area are still facing. Volunteers for ASB were chosen after they took part in an info session and completed a short application in which they wrote an essay that heavily influenced their participation in the program. Students stayed at Wagner College during ASB, volunteering regularly with All Hands – a non-profit organization that assist communities in need of help and those affected by natural disasters. “All Hands…remarked how hard the students worked, even in comparison to other volunteers. I think they truly realized how important this work was to these families, and to this community,” said Daniel Botting, Associate Director at CCAR. Below is a detailed itinerary of what students took part in during ASB. Day 1, March 25th: Participants began their first day by gathering at The University’s NYC campus where they all met for the first time. They watched a documentary on how people’s habits are changing and the impact it has on our planet. It also illustrated the destruction in Brooklyn and Far Rockaway in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Students then got onboard a bus that drove them to Staten Island where a tour guide came on board to show them the areas still devastated by the storm. Later that evening students had the opportunity to get to know each other by bowling. Day 2, March 26th: After breakfast in Wagner’s Dinning Hall, students went to the office of All Hands where they were briefed on their tasks for the day. They were divided into groups of three and assigned specific projects. Some students worked with All Hands coordinators to remove and treat mold in homes once submerged by water at the peak of Superstorm Sandy. Other students helped with removing walls and floors of damaged homes. After a long day students returned to Wagner College to freshen up and were given a presentation by Bill Johnson, who spoke of the relief efforts in Staten Island. Sophomore Brando Brandini said, “Staten Island wasn’t only looking for charity and canned goods, but they needed something more, they needed help. This experience in Alternative Spring Break did just that. By volunteering to help rebuild those homes and working with the non-profits in the community, we witnessed first hand what the Staten Island residents were going through at the time and what their journey has been since the storm hit”. Day 3, March 27th: ASB enthusiasts arrived on scene with lunch in hand to continue their work with All Hands. They continued removing and treating mold, and demolishing the interior of homes. Later that evening, volunteers met with Sally, a woman CCAR assisted in the immediate aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Day 4, March 28th: On the final day participants were divided into two groups. One group worked at Project Hospitality, a food bank and soup kitchen that assists those affected by the storm, and the other at Tunnel to Towers, which has a hurricane relief center that services those affected by the storm. At Project Hospitality, students transported boxes of food from trucks to the storage room where they stocked them on shelves. At Tunnel to Towers, participants assisted in restocking shelves, assisting customers and sorting donations. Finally, students returned to The University where they wrote letters to city officials detailing their experience and what officials can continue to do. Catherine Mastricovo, junior, said “Alternative Spring Break was definitely one of the most rewarding experiences that I’ve had at Pace. I am thankful to have had this opportunity and to have had the chance to learn about myself, others, and the pressing issues in my own area”. Capital B. Capital S. Capital U. That’s right folks: BSU. The Black Student Union, a student organization here at Pace University, is dedicated to transcending the color of one’s skin and encouraging sincere discussion of the many issues facing the black community and our nation as a whole. This all might seem odd coming from a white Jewish male, but truth be told that is what BSU is all about. The door is always open to all; the discourse always profoundly empowering and you always leave meetings with new insight and a sense of community and willingness to look beyond our own individual naivety. One of the most enjoyable aspects of BSU is the civil participation of pretty much everyone who shows up. Surely we all do not agree on every topic but one undoubtedly true attribute of BSU is that we all respect each other and every opinion is valued. It is actually quite remarkable. Take a room full of students from myriad backgrounds and imagine that after an often heated debate we can all simply shake hands and exchange hugs. Personally, I have found that BSU, out of all the clubs at Pace University, is the biggest cure for ignorance and a constant and vibrant source of inspiration. Being a part of BSU is certainly like being a part of a family; we are always sure to wish our members a happy birthday and always strive to throw some of the best events at Pace. With regards to the family feel of BSU, I cannot stress enough how much you will gain from joining our group or at least stopping by for a visit. We meet every Tuesday in W612 at One Pace Plaza. Personally, as a white, Jewish male it may seem ironic but I could not honestly feel more at home with my BSU family. In life, it’s not about one’s skin tone, ethnic background or where he or she grew up. It’s all about where as a family we are headed. The students of Pace University are, as cliché as it may seem, “the future” of our nation and if that has even the smallest credence of truth, then I feel deeply hopeful for our nation. There is undoubtedly much work left to be done on issues of equality for many groups of people, but in BSU fashion I not only extend my hand to invite you to our next meeting but I also challenge you to work towards the equality we all so yearn for. Change is at our doorsteps...challenges at every corner... but find solace in a community and a family you can find right here at Pace. Together we can, tomorrow we will, and in the end our story will be the fabric of a much better nation. Come on out to W612 any Tuesday and weave a new patch of eternal equality in our nation and our individual communities.

University welcomes Disabilities in Film Festival STUDENTS WITHIN THE CLASS CIS 102W Contributors To honor individuals with disabilities in films, during National Disability Awareness Month of April, the Seidenberg School held an evening of A Celebration of Individuals with Disabilities in Films: Film Festival and Expert Panelists at the University. This first-of-its-kind session at the University featured the best-in-class of films from the disability festival media in the city, and at the session the film highlights were discussed in depth by expert practitioners in the field of disability media representation, focusing on proper representation and the rights of individuals with disabilities in the media. There were frequent interactions with the attendees of the session on the topics. There were over 150 attendees at the session that included current and former undergraduate and graduate students. The program was organized by Dr. Jim Lawler of Seidenberg and students in his CIS 102W community engagement courses at the University. At the disability film festival at University they showed a several short movies, all with different messages. The first was a comical flick about a man living in the West Village with a mental disability. He spent his entire life helping others and was known as “the collector.” He would travel all over NYC and raise money for different charities without getting paid at all to do it! The second film starred two young boys playing at home. One of the boys was in a wheelchair and the other boy was not. They went back and forth showing off different things they could do and tried to see if the other could repeat the same movement. The third film was a documentary about a girl who has down syndrome and how her mother felt about her disability. The fourth movie was about two older men who are brothers and the activities they like to do on a daily basis. Even though these films were short, a lot could be learned from each. All of New York City should be open to learning more about the disabled community. The videos mentioned above show compassion and drive. The desire to help others is a trait everyone should possess and it is clear in all individuals that have a mental or physical disability. The third film makes the struggles of having a disability evident but also shows how to over come them ... Like in the second film which showed that everyone has talents, it’s just a matter of discovering them. Overall the event to be a positive experience and a lot of fun. One could learn an abundance of knowledge from another person if they just take the time to understand them.

As Tribeca hits New York City fans flock to theatres MICHAEL TJ WILLIAMS Features Assistant The Tribeca Film Festival began on Wednesday, April 17 and will conclude on Sunday, April 28. Originally founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2002, the festival was meant to bring vitality back to TriBeCa after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. The Festival’s mission is written as follows, “[The Tribeca Film Festival is meant to] help filmmakers reach the broadest possible audience, enable the international film community and general public to experience the power of cinema and promote New York City as a major filmmaking center.” Since 2002, the Festival has screened over 1300 films from over 80 countries, has attracted an audience of approximately 3.7 million people, and has produced about $725 million of economic activity for New York City. This year, there are numerous narrative feature films that are being premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. One of the films that is getting a lot of attention is Adult World. This film follows Amy (Emma Roberts), who is striving to get her poetry career started. She ends up reluctantly taking a job at a local sex-shop, Adult World, while maintaining her mentorship with the withdrawn writer Rat Billings (John Cusack). Amy soon realizes that inspiration can be found in even the most unlikely places as her world mends with that of Adult World. For Emma Roberts, this movie could help move her career forward as she veers away from more childish movies like Aquamarine and Hotel for Dogs. Stand Clear of the Closing Doors is also garnering a lot of attentionat the Festival. This film is set in Far Rockaway, Queens and is based on a true story in the days prior to the infamous Hurricane Sandy. It focuses on an autistic teen named Ricky who decides to escape into the subways for an adventure after he is scolded for skipping class. In the meantime, his mother is vigorously searching for him above ground. This is a touching and inspiring story about the parallel lives of a mother and son in the midst of New York City. Jackie Atwater, freshman, explains, “This sounds like a very cool and thrilling movie. It is probably great for those parents that have children with autism, but honestly, I am sure any parents can relate to the lengths they would go to find their missing child. Just generally though, this movie will definitely raise awareness about Autism. I’d see it for sure!” There are a couple of well-known actors that are appearing in a couple of the films submitted to the Tribeca Film Festival. Paul Rudd will be starring in both Almost Christmas with Paul Giamatti and Prince Avalanche with Emile Hirsch. Melissa Leo can also be seen in two of the Festival’s submissions: Bottled Up with Josh Hamilton and A Single Shot with Sam Rockwell.

There are also numerous foreign films to keep an eye out for too. There is a wide array of countries being represented this year at the Tribeca Film Festival. The United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Israel, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Japan, India, Brazil, Australia, and Iran are among these countries. Byzantium is a film from the U.K. and Ireland that covers the topics of vampires in yet another fantasy film, but this is not the typical Twilight flick. When a mother and daughter are forced to relocate due to the mother’s past dark secrets, they meet a local boy who reveals many of the myths about who they actually are. This is a movie deals with numerous themes common to the genre including, family, identity, and survival. Jacob Lebowitz, freshman, said, “I think the concept and idea of vampires can be fascinating if done right in film. But other vampire movies try too hard to replicate “the” vampire movie: Twilight. I’ll definitely keep my eye on Byzantium, which features Saoirse Ronan of The Lovely Bones and I believe she is one of the up and coming actresses like Jennifer Lawrence was 2 years ago and last year. Even Ronan can make a vampire movie good, no matter what.” Alí Blue Eyes is an Italian film that follows a trouble-making teenager who goes against his family and Muslim roots in order to pursue an Italian girlfriend. This movie is not only a coming-of-age story, but also a great example of Italian neo-realism within the filmmaking. Documentaries are also a big part of the Festival. On Opening Night, Mistaken for Strangers premiered, which follows the rock band called The National during their biggest tour to date. Aatsinki: The Story of Artic Cowboys is a film from Finland that focuses on reindeer herding. Additionally, Russell Crowe can be heard narrating a documentary titled Red Obsession. There are numerous short films that are featured too. Single tickets are still available for purchase. The tickets for Evening and Weekend Screenings cost $16 and the tickets for Matinee and Late Night Screenings cost $8. There are discounts too, which are available to students with a valid ID, senior citizens over the age of 62, and select downtown residents – 10038, 10002, and 10013 are among the accepted zip codes. There are, however, no discounts for the $8 Matinee and Late Night Screenings. Instead of purchasing a $14 ticket to go see a new franchise film at the Regal Cinemas, be sure to check out a movie from an up-and-coming artist at the Tribeca Film Festival and ultimately enjoy the experience of being part of something that helps to promote the film industry within New York City. Lebowitz concluded exclaiming, “I’m very excited because I love movies, and never have gotten the opportunity to see anything at the Tribeca Film Festival before.”

Life’s a circus

ARTS

swl4.com CAITLIN MCNAMARA Staff Writer In the mid 2000’s it seemed that every pop princess put on a circus themed show. 2008 saw the release of Pink’s Funhouse along with Britney Spears’ Circus album. Back in 2006, Christina Aguilera revived her career with the old Hollywood inspired Back to Basics. One of the tracks on this album: Enter the Circus. Circuses were everywhere in the entertainment world, from obvious albums to circus themed performances. Currently the circus trend has seemed to continue. Recent movies have featured circuses and Taylor Swift’s 2013 Grammy performance featured Swift as a ringleader clad in white, while circus performers “danced” around her. Her song, “We Are Never Getting Back Together” had nothing to do with circuses, yet still inspired her performance. So what’s with all the circuses? Is this a trend that will always be in entertainment? Does it seem to be dying out anytime soon? Traditional circuses, such as Barnum & Bailey, have lost their relevance over the years and have struggled to remain significant as a form of entertainment. Not to mention controversies surrounding how the animals in circuses are treated. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has denounced circuses, and it seems the general public agrees. It’s hard to brush aside animal abuse, especially when videos displaying proof of the abuse have been leaked. It seems that the traditional “big top” circuses have been replaced by the French Canadians of Cirque du Soleil. Cirque has definitely raised the bar of the circus scene (is there a circus scene?) with its innovation and ability to adapt. hey know what their audience wants to see. But even with the drifting relevance of the traditional circus, it still has the ability to inspire and enthrall the mainstream entertainment world. Movies about circuses have been around for ages and have covered several different genres. From romance to horror to animation, circuses have been covered every which way. In 2011 Water for Elephants, which starred Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon, took a more romantic turn within the circus genre. Based on the 2006 novel, of the same

title, by Sara Gruen, Water for Elephants displayed an era when the circus was quite glamorous. Oddly enough the book came out the same year Back to Basics came out. Coincidence? Another more recent circus movie was 2012’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, which delighted children with the story of four escaped New York City zoo animals still trying to get home. In this installment, the four creatures befriend a traveling circus and help revive the acts. Most will remember the charming commercial where Marty, the Chris Rock zebra, sang a lovely circus tune while donning a rainbow afro. Ah kids movies. What’s interesting about a children’s film featuring a circus, is that the target is a younger generation. Most contemporary children have probably never seen or will see a circus, so it seems a waste of time to feature them in films. But there’s something about the idea of the circus that captures our interests today, so much so that the film industry wants to teach children all about it. There is something beautiful and terrifying about the circus. If we look to the circuses of The Great Depression era, the costumes were gorgeous. The showgirls were beautiful, the outfits were amazing, and the headpieces the elephants wore were fantastic. Both Britney and Christina used this glamour aspect on their albums, in style and in the music. The terrifying part about circuses: clowns. Clowns are never a good idea. There has always been a chaos, or insanity, surrounding the circus and entertainment uses this aspect to their advantage as well. Any haunted house during Halloween has a circus section. Pink’s Funhouse album used this darker side of the circus, especially on the title track in which she alludes to her troubled relationship. There doesn’t seem to be one definite answer about why there is so much circus in the entertainment world. Perhaps it’s a nod to those trailblazers of traveling theater. Perhaps it’s just the glamour. Whatever it is, it seems to be holding steady in today’s pop culture. With Cirque du Soleil redefining what “circus” is, there seems to be more in store. The more acrobatic aspect of the circus is also being displayed, again with Pink when she performed at the 52nd Grammy Awards. Let’s hope there’s no more clowns though. Clowns aren’t cool.

Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductes range of artists Musicians Rush and Randy Newman are just a few of this year’s inductees EWURAMA ORLEANS LINDSAY Contributor Since 1986 the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame selects performers and non-performers that have given a proper contribution to the music industry. Today, CEO Joel Peresman selects artists each year to be among greats like Sam Cooke, Chuck Berry, and James Brown. The 27th induction contains artists that have made their mark in our generation and have influenced many of the artists in the music and film industry now. This year the Rock n Roll hall of fame is inducting musical compositional legends Quincy Jones and Lou Adler into their Ahmet Ertegun Award for Lifetime Achievement. In addition to big name artists such as Rush, Donna Summer, Randy Newman, and Public Enemy, the selction includes artists from different genres. Quincy Jones had a heavy influence on modern music and cool jazz in addition to producing the top-grossing album of all time, Thriller by Michael Jackson. Quincy Jones was born in Chicago in 1933 and immediately

began working in the music industry with the influence of Ray Charles. In 1951 he got a scholarship to Berklee School Music, but instead of staying the term ,went on tour with Lionel Hampton as a trumpet player and as an arranger. Quincy moves to New York in 1953 to continue arranging for jazz artists such as Dinah Washington and his then close friend Ray Charles. Through the years his contributions exceeded others from working albums for greats such as Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, and Aretha Franklin being an all around philanthropist and working with film scores for over 50 films like his fellow inductee Lou Adler. Lou also born in Chicago in 1933, he began as a manager for Herb Alpert, a talented songwriter, who he eventually collaborates with to write for greats such as Sam Cooke and many other California bands at the time. In the sixties he formed a songwriting group with Carole King, Stevie Barri and P.F. Sloan in addition to starting and becoming the president and chief record producer of

Dunhill Records. Adler signed the Mamas and Papas in 1965 putting on them on the charts by writing hits such as “ California Dreaming” and “Monday Monday.” After his first huge hit with success he split with Herb Alpert and sold his record label to form Ode records where he helped break the careers of American favorites like; Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Janis Joplin. But Lou didn’t begin to do films until the late 1970s with The Rocky Horror Show, after his adaptation of it as a screenplay. Due the contributions Quincy Jones and Lou Adler made, they helped to open the door for the artists that are being inducted today. Between Quincy Jones and Lou Adler, The Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame is inducting musicians that helped bring classics during the 70’s and 80’s. These musicians range in genres and impact. To find out more about this year’s inductees, visit the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame website.

Spring fashion trends

Be prepared for spring with new looks that make even the coldest day hot THATIANA DIAZ Features Assistant Spring 2013 is all about getting back to basics. As the hopeful rays of a new season stream through the windows, New Yorkers are trading in heavy winter coats for a lighter, more laid-back transitional wardrobe. Indeed, this spring, fashion takes a come-as-you-are approach, making it easy to stay stylish in the sun. For women, classic casual looks like leather and denim mix with spring 2013’s tummy-baring trend to create natural, downplayed styles devoid of winter’s done-up drama. Men can now pack away the parkas and shelving heavy sweaters to make way for spring styles like bowties and colorful shoes.

For Women

Bermuda shorts, the slouchy, cool-girl shorts that were all over the New York runways this season are perfect for every girl who never felt like she could pull off those cheekbaring cutoffs so beloved on Instagram. They’re ultra chic, family friendly, and flattering. Peek-a-boo pieces are the must haves in the closest this season. This spring you’ll have zero problems finding something sexy to wear: daring cutouts, midriff-baring separates, up-to-there splits, and sheer fabrics were all over the runway. The beauty of this trend? There’s a peek-a-boo option for every body shape and level of modesty up for grabs. Every girl loves her accessories. The big thing in this category is statement glasses. These will add a little runway to a basic look. This is also an affordable buy that can be found in Urban or H&M for under $10. Sexy ’90s pointy heels are back and have been modernized with everything from dainty ankle straps to cylindrical heels. There will always be a moment for four-inch pumps, but these ladylike heels are such a nice option to have on hand. Extra cool points if worn with slouchy boyfriend jeans or Bermuda shorts to brunch with the girls. A luxe leather piece is more than worth adding to spring shopping lists. Minimalistic shapes, rich colors, and a no-fuss approach to the hair, makeup, and accessories that complete the look make these investment items seem like they’re from 2013, not 1980. A leather jacket can make a look badass in just seconds! Whether sliced vertically or horizontally, stripes, some nautically inspired, will be sure to set off your wardrobe with panache. It’s all about bold combinations for spring. Layer stripe on stripe, or take it easy with a lined dress. But remember, horizontal stripes can make you look wide, while vertical stripes make you appear long and lean, make the right choice.

For Men

It’s not just flashes of color in neckties, pocket squares, socks, and collared shirts: a rainbow full of saturated shades are brightening up all facets of menswear. Colorful patterns are also in the mix for spring, with smaller-scale houndstooth print, finer stripes, and smaller grid checks in shirting. While some men may have no doubts about donning pants in a bold hue or pairing a variety of shades within one look, more styleshy guys should start by opting for one core colored piece. Unsure of which shade to select? Feel free to stay in the go to color of blue but maybe go a little bit lighter or little bit more punchier with the blue, it’s a simple way of just taking the blue up a notch from the usual navy or denim blue. Bowties are broadening beyond tuxedos and geek chic as a sleek alternative to neckties awash in vibrate hues, graphic patterns, and even available in reversible varieties. It’s a modern look that injects a little bit of life into your wardrobe. Along with bowties, summer scarves have come into style. Europe has been showing them for 10, 15 years and now men in North America are starting to embrace it, because they’d usually only wear the scarves in the winter. From Monet-inspired linings in trench coats to patterns dotting coats and the undersides of collars, expect to see subtle details making a strong statement in spring outerwear. There’s also a big trend towards the jersey blazer, which is unconstructed and free of shoulder pads, almost reminiscent of a sweater jacket. The concept of the soft, relaxed jacket for springs speaks to the climate as well as the notion of comfort. A jacket can just take you into any situation and you look appropriately dressed. Men also are showing a lot of knit jackets for the season. It almost has the feel of a cardigan when you it on but they’re done in very light years, you have the element of extreme comfort.

asos.com Footwear swathed in suede is a great warm-weather style option. There’s also considerable color popping up in footwear, like brightly hued oxfords. Whether it’s just a colored lace or full in color throughout the entire shoe, it’s a nice way to add the fashion element but without being too over the top. Spring has sprung and now that you know the top trends, we hope you’re inspired to try something new this season!

‘Gangs of New York’ TV series in the works

Scene from Gangs of New York film.

imdb.com CAITLIN MCNAMARA Staff Writer

Director extraordinaire Martin Scorsese has announced that a T.V. series based on his 2002-film Gangs of New York is in the works. The Oscar nominated film featured a star studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day Lewis, Cameron Diaz and Liam Neeson, just to name a few. It is unlikely any of these stars will be involved with the series, but Martin Scorsese is collaborating with Miramax to bring this tale of 19th century New York to the little screen. The show is said to widen its scope, focusing not only on the birth of organized gangs in New York, but in additional cities such as Chicago and New Orleans as well. Fans may ask what is the point of reviving a film from 2002 into a series. Well, Scorsese recently stated, “... the era was too rich to fully explore in a two hour film.” He went on to say, “[the series] allows us the time and

creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.” With the success of period dramas, especially the BBC’s Copper, which takes place in the same time period and the same location as GoNY, the timing seems quite convenient for Scorsese. Copper has received a lot of buzz, with it’s second season set to premier in June. Similar to GoNY, Copper takes place in Five Points, but follows the story of policemen post-civil war. The BBC’s other 19th century drama Ripper Street, which takes place in post “Jack the Ripper” England, was picked up for another season. Costume dramas seem to be all over the place, though throughout different time periods. The early 20th century has captivated audiences with series such as Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire, with Martin Scorsese as executive producer of

the latter. Even with shows such as Mad Men, The Americans, and The Borgias all premiering within a few years of each other, there seems to be a revived interest in the past. It seems to be the perfect time for Scorsese to embark on this project. And in recent years, the overall quality of television has improved greatly thanks to networks including HBO, AMC, and Showtime. Though audiences are flooded with pulpy reality shows, the followings that have been created by shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, have really raised the bar for scripted television. The Gangs of New York series has not been picked up by a specific network as of yet, and most likely will not air in the near future. If all goes well, Martin Scorsese could possibly have another hit series under his belt.

What to see in the box office this summer CHRISTIAN GOMEZ Arts Assistant Spring is here and the beginning of the summer movie tidal wave is almost here, with more than 60 movies from April to August, this summer is set to set records with major sequels and brand new stories being told on the big screen. The summer movie season does not officially begin until May 3 with the release of the pivotal film for Marvel, Iron Man 3. The movie is controversial due to director and mood change. Following the huge success of the Avengers, Iron Man 3 awkwardly stands in its shadow with a new director and an aim at a more serious and gritty story for everyone’s favorite philanthropist, genius, playboy, and billionaire, Tony Stark. Iron Man 3 is also an important movie for Marvel as its success or possible failure will be the deciding factor on if the rumored sequels to Thor and Captain America will be officially green lit, or if Marvel will shift its focus entirely on a sequel to the wildly successful Avengers film. The Great Gatsby makes its debut on the big screen in the 2013 adaptation of the timeless American classic. Unlike the underfunded Paul Rudd version, the new Great Gatsby has an all-star cast with Toby Maguire playing the narrator Nick, whose character follows the lives of exocentric and shady billionaire Jay Gatsby played by Leonardo DiCaprio. The film has received mostly positive buzz but some critics worry about the inclusion of 3D to the film and the modern playlist that is set to release soon. J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot is getting a sequel and release on May 17th with Star Trek into Darkness, keeping the same cast that won the attention of the

newest generation of Trekies over in 2009. This film will follow the manhunt for a one man weapon of mass destruction through a war-zone and rumored “jungle planet.” The villain played by Peter Weller is set to be similar to Kahn, villain from the original series of “Star Trek” Movies. The Fast and the Furious movies continue with Fast and Furious 6. In a post Fast 5 world where the series has gone from being all about the cars to an almost super hero like bank robbery series, Fast 6 aims to continues this series shift with an international heist plot. Locations from UK to Germany have been confirmed. Some worry that these two locations will be portrayed inaccurately as Rio was in Fast 5. The strangely dark and gritty Hangover Part 2 received less than stellar reviews, but the final movie in the series, Part 3, aims to bring the film back to Vegas and focus more on the comedy. The crew is forced to hunt down series staple Mr. Chow, who is wanted by John Goodman who forces Phil, Stu and Alan to hunt him down to settle a score between the two. The return to Vegas is a welcomed one by fans and the shift from lost memory plot to a more comedic manhunt for notoriously eccentric Mr. Chow played by Ken Jeong has given faith to fans who were disappointed by the second film. These films air in May, but the list goes on for many other films being released in following months, ensuring this summer will be best spent hiding from global warming in the temperature controlled oasis that is local movie theaters.

Finance major launches fashion brand Linden Quest

CAITLIN MCNAMERA Staff Writer Though the University is no FIT, fashion can be seen all over campus. From the courtyard to the classrooms, there are well-dressed students roaming the hallways flaunting what they’ve got. But the passion for fashion doesn’t stop there. Finance major and member of the junior class, Ralph Vinci Latayan, has taken his love of clothing a step further. He recently launched his own brand of clothing titled Linden Quest with his first collection aptly named Serpente. He stopped in for an interview with The Pace Press.

The Pace Press (TPP): Was this line created with a specific season in mind? Ralph Vinci Latayan (RVL): I was originally going to release it as a pre-Fall 2013 collection, but I ended up opting for a name instead since labeling it by season would imply that I’ll be releasing a new collection every few months or so, and that would just be insane. TPP: What was the inspiration for the line? Were you trying to say anything through your clothes? RVL: When I attended the American Music Awards in LA last year, I noticed how the ladies were able to show off their style and individuality more than the guys, who for the most part looked pretty similar in shirts and neckties. I thought switching it up a little wouldn’t hurt, so I came up with the snake neckties. But instead of just releasing the neckties, I thought I’d release a whole line following the snake theme. Linden Quest is an anagram for “Delinquents,” which pretty much gives you a good idea of the line’s image. My main priority was to use it as a medium to express myself artistically, as opposed to trying to send a specific message. I didn’t want to be cliché and be one of those guys who say things like “Oh, it’s more than just a clothing line, it’s a movement!” Like, don’t be silly. It’s a t-shirt with a banana on it. I also used it as a “Hall of Fame” for people who have had the most positive impacts on my life. I named the snakesleeve tees after some of my closest friends (Disi for Andisi, Nessa for Vanessa, and Boanna for Joanna). For the Italian foil tees, I named one after my friend Alex Koletas, who is actually a Pace alumnus.

Supermodel River Viiperi tweeted a picture in which he wore a Linden Quest hat. twitter.com

TPP: When did your interest in fashion begin? RVL: First of all I’d like to make it clear that I am a businessman before I am a designer or anything fashionrelated. I have never studied fashion, so I don’t want to disrespect people in the industry by claiming I’m some kind of connoisseur. But to answer your question, I grew up in the industry. Even when my family was still in the Philippines my mother had already been working with designers. Now in the Big Apple, it’s the same picture. Growing up I’d work for her or her friends for some extra money, and naturally I’d meet all these people and start building a network. But if there is something that got me interested in the fashion industry, it’s how spontaneous and fun it can be. When I was a senior in high school, my mom asked me to skip class to fly with her to California for a business trip. Next thing I knew I was hanging out in a Middle Eastern princess’s mansion in Beverly Hills while Christina Aguilera lounged in her backyard literally next door. Plus, fashion shows are amazing networking opportunities. I am a network nut! TPP: Do you sew or make your own clothes? RVL: I had to take a (mandatory!) sewing class in middle school in the Philippines, so I know some basics. Nothing extensive, though. I have factories here in New York City and in Italy who manufacture my clothes for Linden Quest.

TPP: Would you consider fashion a hobby or a career goal? RVL: A hobby, definitely. I’m still undecided about my future career path, and I’m using Linden Quest to create a platform for myself that I can use once I have a more solid career plan later in life. I am learning a lot and I am making some amazing connections, so while Linden Quest won’t be around forever, having it now is definitely going to benefit me in the long run. I actually recently got an offer to be carried in a store in the UK, and without thinking twice I turned it down. It just didn’t fit with my visions for Linden Quest. I want to have complete control of its image and health. TPP: Who is the line’s target audience? Who do you imagine wearing your clothes? RVL: I’d say people in their late teens to late 20’s. I can imagine them being avid Zara shoppers. Or maybe Jeremy Scott fans. You get the picture: a bit edgy, but not too over the top. TPP: What has been the general response to your line? RVL: I’m pretty surprised about the response. Since this is my first small hobby/business, I didn’t really know what to expect. I gave myself a deadline of around 6 months just to breakeven since I depend heavily on word of mouth, and reaching out to new potential buyers would be a pain in the butt (and it is). But in less than one month, I did it. And within that one month I’ve been worn by people like The Terminator’s son Patrick Schwarzenegger, supermodel/Paris Hilton’s beau River Viiperi, and Pentatonix member Scott Hoying. So, I’d say the response has been good. I won’t complain. And becoming buddies with some of them has definitely been a bonus. TPP: Was the process overwhelming? Exciting? RVL: “Overwhelming” would be an understatement. It was basically months of walking into every single fabric store there is in the Fashion District, running around Midtown carrying literally over a hundred shirts, nearly dying of frustration setting up the website, losing sleep over photographing all the items and retouching the photos…it was definitely one heck of a process. It was a lot tougher than I expected. I have to thank my family for all the help. But don’t get me wrong, it was also very exciting and rewarding once everything came together. TPP: Where do you plan to go next with your line? RVL: My initial plan was to release one collection, cross it off my bucket list, then say bye-bye. However, seeing how things are going right now, I’ll stick around a little longer. A small release for the summer is actually in the works right now, so I’m excited about that. As for long-term plans, I still don’t see it as a future career path. The market is too saturated, and I like having a niche. To borrow Jane Mayle’s words, I don’t want to ever feel like just “another cog in the fashion machine.” I’m here to have fun and create a platform for myself. Once I lose that thrill or feel like it’s time to move on to something bigger, I would not hesitate to shut Linden Quest down. v

Steelos website proves to be a hit with consumers MICHAEL TJ WILLIAMS Features Assistant Everyone dreams of being able to stroll down the luxurious Fifth Avenue, spending stacks of money like the celebrities do, but the majority of New York City’s growing population is unable to afford any of the expensive items sold in these high-end shops. Steelos is a new fashion retailer that properly balances the newest trends with affordable pricing. The company was founded in the Fall of 2012 by Jonathan Scholnick, a student at the University, along with Jesse Bride, Gerard Adams, Jonathan Ortega and Robert Patterson. In a recent Q&A with Scholnick, he gave a detailed insight into he start-up of their company. The Pace Press (TPP): What is Steelos? Jonathan Scholnick (JS): Steelos is a new stylish and affordable fashion company. Style isn’t about the price of an item but more about knowing about a product’s quality, paying attention to its detail, and knowing how to put it all together. At Steelos, we bridge the gap between high fashion, contemporary and streetwear at an obtainable price point. Not everyone can shop on Fifth Avenue or spend like superstars, but we all want to look like we do. At Steelos, not only will you find current trends, but also the classics that should be in every man’s closet and never go out of style. No malls, lines, or looking for parking, just easy shopping. TPP: What was your inspiration for starting up a company such as Steelos? JS: Throughout our lives we are constantly reminded that we need to go to school and get good grades so we can get good jobs working for someone else for the rest of our lives. A wise man once told me that if you don’t build your dream, someone will hire you to help them build theirs. Those very words stuck with me til’ this day and still remind me that if I never take a chance at chasing my dreams, I’ll probably end up working for the person that did. That was when I decided I wanted to be my own boss and work with people not for them. At first I drove myself crazy thinking about creating something new and innovative that no one had ever seen before. Then it came to me, in life it’s not necessarily about reinventing the wheel, instead it is about making the best wheel possible. It’s about doing something you love and doing it better than everyone else. TPP: How did you go about starting up this company? JS: In the summer of 2012, I approached a mentor of mine who happened to be a Venture Capitalist with an idea of creating an Etail platform that was targeted towards Generation Y. Thanks to the Internet, startup costs for entering the marketplace are far less than brick and mortar. Shortly after that we formed a team of four partners with over 15 years of experience in the fashion industry. One year later here we are. I am blessed to have such a great team around me because we

learn things from each other every day. TPP: What obstacles and challenges did you face? JS: I face obstacles each and every day just like others. I believe that what separates the good from the great is how effectively you can overcome those obstacles and stay focused on your goal. Never let success get to your head or failure to your heart. Your business is what you make it so if you’re having a bad day in your personal life you can’t let that come in between what you need to accomplish because if you do it will certainly affect your productivity. Find a way to learn from your failures. Another word for mistake is experience. TPP: Now, we heard you were big because of a technique you used, building up your following starting with social media. Why this technique? Has it proven successful? JS: Social Media is hands down the most influential piece of my puzzle. Before Steelos I had started a consulting group that specialized in social media and new age technology for doctors, lawyers and small businesses around the tri-state. Using platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and YouTube gave me the opportunity of trial and error since they are free to use. With this experience I was able to create a massive buzz and build awareness about Steelos.com across the country and even the world. Our first order came from Michigan and our second from Istanbul! Social media is the new fountain of youth and must be used in order to stay relatable. As Karl Lagerfeld said, “Vintage is good for clothes, not people.” TPP: What advice do you have for other University students interested in starting their own companies? JS: Starting a business is like growing a tree, the most important part are the roots because they make sure that the tree never collapses. Make sure you have a loyal and hardworking team around you. A team with a shared vision can accomplish much more than just one person. Networking and building relationships are the most important because at the end of the day, a business decision will be based on a person’s relationship with you, not your GPA. Steelos is definitely an important contribution to creating an affordable fashion industry, and this new start-up company is quickly developing. Larry Chiagouris, a professor in the Lubin School of Business, elaborated on what it takes to start a business. “Get a mentor and get some investors, which are usually friends and family. Be sure to create a strong and believable business plan. A typical challenge is not having enough money and no real experience to convince investors to provide financial support.” v

Child stars brave transition to adulthood From teens to adults and the loss of innocence in-between MICHAEL TJ WILLIAMS Features Assistant

Justin Bieber lashes out at a photographer socialitelife.com

When a Disney starlet has racy nude pictures that surface the Internet, there are going to be the disappointed fans, with the occasional ecstatic fans. This happened to the young Vanessa Hudgens, but to many other young teenage actors as well. A new trend in the entertainment industry is that teenage stars feel the need to go through both a drastic and negative change into adulthood in order to shed that previous skin of innocence. There are even a couple who unintentionally go off the deep-end during this transition. From Vanessa Hudgens with her nude pictures to Amanda Bynes’ numerous DUIs, all of these teenagers have faced many challenges in the shift from innocent teenager to explicit adult. In 2007, the High School Musical star Vanessa Anne Hudgens had nude pictures that surfaced the internet, which were rumored to have been a gift to her boyfriend at the time, Zac Efron—himself a Disney channel star. This Disney star’s reputation was forever tarnished, but it did not stop in 2007. More nude pictures hit the internet in both 2009 and 2011. Hudgens’ publicist explained that someone had a hold of the pictures and was releasing them periodically over the Internet. However, Disney stars tend to have a hard time transitioning from the good girl or boy persona to more edgy roles. These nude pictures have furthered the transition for Hudgens’ acting career. “It’s always been hard for actors to cross that bridge, but honestly, you have to hold out and do what you think is right for yourself,” Hudgens explained in an interview promoting her latest role, “Spring Breakers.” “Spring Breakers” hit theatres on March 22. It received a mix of reviews, but through movies such as this, “Beastly,” “Sucker Punch,” and of course the nude pictures, Hudgens is easily on her way to completely losing that good girl image. Michelle Mayer, freshman at the University, explained, “I feel like any celebrity who has a nude picture ends up doing great in their career. Sex sells.” Then there’s Amanda Bynes, the former Nickelodeon star who has become more well-known for her recent bizarre behavior rather than her previous acting credits. Most recently, she posted a video on Twitter of her making faces in the mirror, entitled “I’m sucking on a Sour Patch Kid listening to music getting ready for tonight: D.”

She has hair extensions since her head was shaved due to hair damage, she had very dark make-up applied, and she showed off her two recent piercings from cheek to cheek. One Twitter user replied to this video, “@AmandaBynes so cute. What happened?” whereas another follower commented, “[back] when you were sane.” “Stop acting like I’m doing something wrong,” Bynes wrote to Complex Magazine on Twitter. “I’m obsessed with myself on Twitter. Also, my video last night was perfection.” Bynes continued, “I’m so sick of the articles you write about me. I want every fake article deleted.” Whether it is the consistent DUIs, calling her previous boyfriend Kid Cudi “ugly” or the constant avoidance of cameras via purses and even clothing in front of her face—to her tweet in which she admitted she wanted rapper Drake to “murder my vagina”—it appears she definitely needs to figure herself out. In 2010, she explained, “I don’t love acting anymore so I’ve stopped doing it.” The only reason she has remained in the press so heavily is because of her unusual behavior that garners a lot of attention. Jacob Ariel, freshman, said, “She’s not crazy, she was just at a high pressure point and broke down.” Mayer also agreed, “Amanda Bynes is just trying something different. She’s not unstable.” Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus have all transitioned into adulthood quite smoothly but the media has still negatively portrayed these shifts. People grow up, and that is exactly what these three celebrities have done. Gomez recently appeared in the racy indie-film “Spring Breakers” alongside Hudgens. Cyrus was also caught smoking a blunt, but overall, none of these stars did anything that was inappropriate for their ages. Justin Bieber on the other hand, has travelled a rougher road, from his squeaky clean days with “the Bieber” haircut, to more headline making antics like fighting paparazzi, smoking marijuana and most recently leaving a message in the Anne Frank memorial in which he hoped she would have been a ‘belieber.’ It is difficult to grow up in the spotlight as a child, and when it comes to transitioning to adulthood, there are bound to be several drastic changes. Whether it be the Disney stars trying to shed their good girl image or if it is simply these young celebrities maturing into their age, the media will always find a way to negatively portray any of their changes.v

On Thursday Night, in front of One Pace Plaza, University students, faculty and staff joined together to march the streets to raise awareness of sexual assault during “Take Back the Night,” a national vigil dedicated to survivors of crimes of silence. Dean for Students Marijo O’Grady and university alumni Annamaria Santamaria ‘12, who was the President and Founder of Students Organizing Against Rape—known as SOAR—and interned at the New York City Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, joined participants. This came on the heels of a number of recent scandals that brought sexual assault awareness to the forefront of the nation’s minds. A 28-year-old woman was grabbed by the neck and sexually assaulted on the morning of April 14 while walking from the Fulton-Nassau Street subway station, just blocks away from the University’s campus. The victim was followed from the Fulton Street A train by the suspect, who then attacked her five blocks away at the corner of Park Row and Beekman Street near City Hall, authorities said. The attacker grabbed her around the neck and pulled down

her pants, before she was able to begin screaming for help. Construction workers at a nearby site came running over to help her, and the suspect fled. Just two days before, Reebok had announced an end to its relationship with rapper Rick Ross after a firestorm of criticism for Ross’ allegedly pro-rape lyrics. The sneaker brand said in a statement that, “Reebok holds our partners to a high standard and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so.” The lyrics in question are from the track “U.O.E.N.O,” released in January. In the song, Ross raps about sneaking MDMA, also known as ecstasy or Molly, into a woman’s drink and having his way with her while she was unconscious. This frenzy happened right as Sexual Assault Awareness Week began on campus. As done every year, University students, faculty and staff engaged in anti-violence activism during Sexual Assault Awareness Week, April 15-19. Sexual Assault Awareness Week, planned in April in conjunction with national Sexual Assault Awareness Month, raises awareness about sexual assault and offers preventive measures and resources. Tables were set up each day in the front lobby of One Pace Plaza distributing

University sees improvements over decade Faculty focus on students encourages real-world success JULIA YEUNG Staff Writer In the past decade, the University has experienced significant changes. Once known as a commuting college with strong programs in accounting and business, the University has grown to become recognized for their liberal and performing arts, nursing and computer science departments as well. These programs have attracted students from all over the world who choose to attend and experience the opportunities available in NYC. Changes within departments, expansion of programs, dedication of faculty and professional integration have helped the University improve and gain a rise in its reputation. Just this past year, the University has been named one of the top 10 schools for internships (first in the New York area), received employment rates 10 percent higher than the national average, expanded the performing arts department into a new building for its growing reputation, leased two residential buildings to accommodate the growing number of residential students and has a large number of students conducting undergraduate research and participating in collegiate competitions in their respective majors. “The University has strengthened and expanded in the liberal arts in that Dyson College has grown to become more prominent and has received more recognition. There also has been the addition of more majors and growth in the departments as well over the years,” said University Economics Professor Morreale, “The economics department has become much stronger with a high level of undergraduate research being conducted. There is also more diversity within the economic program being offered, such as the integration of the China-track study and the public policy analysis track.” Recently, a team of the University’s economics students earned first place in the 2012 New York Federal Reserve Challenge. The students triumphed over 33 other colleges from the mid-Atlantic region, including Princeton, Cornell, Hamilton and New York University. They then proceeded to the national Federal Reserve Board competition in Washington D.C., where they placed third beating over 130 other colleges and universities from around the country. The University has also received recognition and praise for its rising performing arts department. Many BFA Acting and Musical Theater students have landed guest roles in television and appeared in Broadway productions. Just recently, freshman BFA Acting major Hayley Griffen was cast in an upcoming episode of Law & Order SVU. Another

BFA Acting student, David Armanino was a featured performer on Broadwayworld.com. The University is also home to the prestigious Actors Studio Drama School, a three-year MFA graduate program that was named one of the Top 25 drama schools in the country by The Hollywood Reporter. The growing reputation of the department has led to the expansion of the program into a new building located at 140 William Street. Dr. Jonathan Hill, Associate Dean of the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems, also highlights the changes that have been taking place within the Seidenberg School. “10 years ago, students in this department wanted to work for the big banks, but now the growing start-up techology industry here in New York has created so many opportunities for students to get involved. I had met students at other universities around the country who are jealous of the opportunities Pace students have here. We’re attracting more talented students – both undergraduate and graduate.” The University’s close proximity to many of the top Fortune 500 firms, non-profits, major publishing and media organizations, provide students with the opportunities that not all other college students are able to have. The University’s internship program has resulted in a total of 1,642 undergraduates during the academic year 2011-2012, pursuing learning opportunities either through internships, field placements, student teaching and clinical work. In addition, the University’s Lubin School of Business has remained strong with their accredited business and accounting programs, which had received dual accreditation by the AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in 2011. AACSB Accreditation is known worldwide to be the longest standing, most recognized form of specialized and professional accreditation an institution and its business programs can earn. Currently, fewer than two percent of business schools internationally have dual accreditation. Lubin is also only one of three business schools in the NYC area to have received this. With the growing recognition of the University’s academic departments, more students are attracted to and interested in joining the Pace community. Last semester, 2,335 new students enrolled at the University, an increase of 315 students from the year before. As the University’s reputation and strength of academic programs continues to grow, more talented students are choosing to consider Pace as a favorable option.v

address university rape culture t-shirts, tattoos, buttons, flashlights, policy, resources and more. Students also had the option to stop by the Café to participate in the Clothesline Project, which addresses the issue of violence against women by providing a vehicle for the women to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. Other events included discussions with the LGBTQA and Social Justice Center, a self-defense workshop, bystander training and a vigil called “Take Back the Night.” At the vigil last Thursday, Santamaria started off speaking of the University’s progress, but added, “There is still a lot to do to ensure that sexual violence is not happening on our campus. Pace should be focusing not only on preventative measures but also on risk reduction and crisis intervention to truly have comprehensive programming.” Some suggestions she made for the University were to reallocate funds to address sexual violence, incorporate provisions for anonymous reporting, and form programs around the prevalence of acquaintance and date rape, including peerto-peer workshops. “It’s our duty to educate with the knowledge we have,” shared Santamaria. The crowd was also educated on government progress and bystander intervention. Everyone present was then allowed to share advice or stories on sexual

violence which motivated the crowd to begin the march around the financial district neighborhood. Beginning from One Pace Plaza, passing by the South Street Seaport, and marching around the darkest areas, everyone chanting, “Break the silence, stop the violence!” and “Ay oh, sexual violence has got to go.” In 2011, the University set a policy on sexual harassment after one student was harassed on the streets and professors did not know the protocol on how to help. Members of the University community who believe they have been sexually assaulted or harassed may obtain redress through the established informal and/or formal procedures set forth in the University Discrimination Grievance Procedure, which can be found in the student handbook. All complaints will be addressed promptly and equitably. The informal channels are designed to provide counseling and an evaluation of options, all completely confidential and off the record. The formal procedures handle cases when the charge is written and signed and can result in an investigation. To help stop the violence, Santamaria advised students to speak up, “If you or someone you know experiences sexual harassment or violence, speak to university officials immediately so action can be taken.” v

fashion world demands NNEKA OKOLI Contributor Sarah Mendelsohn says she’s always been a quirky girl. “I sometimes would want to wear turquoise pants with a dark red t-shirt and some ridiculous accessory, like a boa. My mother always warned me that kids at school would make fun of me, but I never listened,” said Mendelsohn. A noted fashion blogger, Mendelsohn has used her blog to be invited to fly out expense free around the world, most notably to cover Tel Aviv Fashion Week in Isreal. When asked about her career she said, “I have done freelance styling and writing for a culmination of publications and companies including New York Magazine, US Weekly, Out of Print Magazine, HY.GEN.IC, Fashion Up!, Front Row Society, Veux Magazine, Kate Ryan Inc. and more.” It is clear that Mendelsohn is taking advantage of every opportunity the city has to offer and it all started with a blog she made when she was only 16. Since before she was 16, though, Mendelsohn knew that fashion was the career pathway she wanted take. “I’ve wanted to go into fashion journalism probably since I was in Middle School. ...I would spend hours flipping through fashion magazines reading the articles and admiring the editorials. From then on I knew that it was something that I wanted to be a part of,” she said. Being that New York City is the fashion capital of the world it was obviously the one condition Sarah maintained when searching for colleges, and because of that, the University was on the top of her list. The University has undoubtedly produced successful leaders and brilliant thinkers—arguably by enforcing that all students take the University Core, ensuring that all students receive a broad education. While the initial reaction of most students is negative when it comes to taking

required classes, Sarah has used the core to her advantage in order to accelerate her career before she graduates in the Spring of 2013. Mendelsohn said that she was inspired by a fashion blog she found while browsing the internet, “This was a time when fashion blogs weren’t really a prominent thing on the Internet. I found one called “The Clothes Horse” that I started to read daily. I loved how someone who wasn’t officially in the industry was still able to share her educated opinions on it” and thus her blog was born. Mendelsohn said she had an “if she can do it. Why can’t I?” attitude and in 2007 the blog “A Hit of Sarah” was born. When she came to the University in 2009 Sarah used the core curriculum to her advantage: “Graphic design and digital design were very useful in learning how to make clean and unique graphics for my website. CIS 101 was also very useful in learning HTML. I took photography to learn an art form I use very frequently” these classes: Photography, Graphic Design, and CIS 101 all fulfill core curriculum requirements and have clearly aided Mendelsohn in her career allowing her to make her fashion blog more sophisticated in its design. Mendelsohn’s blog has not only given her success in the fashion journalism world but it has also translated into success in the fashion industry overall. It was because of her blog she was able to attend New York Fashion Week this spring, where she attended 13 shows—the most noted being Carolina Herrera and Helmut Lang. Mendelsohn said she has the University to thank, saying, “I’ve had very supportive teachers and colleagues. Some of my professors have offered me advice and a lot of fellow Pace students support what I do and I’m extremely thankful for that.” v
