West end prepares for weekend cleanup ALI RAZA plv@insidetoronto.com It’s time for Parkdale to roll up its sleeves and give back to the community during the city of Toronto’s annual cleanup days. The corporate and school cleanup day

A Parkdale-based organization that offers free ensemble music lessons to at risk kids is holding its first community fundraiser. Sistema Toronto will hold its Parkdale Spring Symphony Gala Concert at Bonar-Parkdale Presbyterian Church, 250 Dunn Ave., on Sunday with a gala reception from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. and the concert from 3 to 4 p.m.
There will be entertainment for the kids, desserts, special musical guests, all culminating with an orchestra performance by the Sistema kids. The program has proved to be very popular among participating children. It promotes positive attitudes and partnerships between peers. “Sistema makes me feel like we’re one big happy family,” said Lin, a 10-year-old Sistema Toronto student. “The teachers treat us all the best and >>>CONCERT, page 15
LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash invited her constituents to join her in a conversation about a subject many find difficult: death. She joined colleague Charlie Angus, MP for Timmins-James Bay, who is spearheading a private members’ motion that addresses palliative and endof-life care, for a roundtable discussion with seniors’ representatives, health and elder-care representatives last Thursday morning.
Angus was in Toronto for consultations about the motion and Nash invited him to the meeting at the Swansea Town Hall. Angus’ motion acknowledges the significant discrepancy in palliative care options across the country. It creates a blueprint with provincial and territorial governments in an effort to boost consistency in care while taking into account people’s spiritual and cultural needs. The issue, he has found, gets little attention in Ottawa. >>>MOTION, page 6

GTA Rollergirls founder honoured with Caring Canadian Award League was inspired by 2006 reality TV show LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s likely Cynthia Brooks – perhaps best known as her roller derby alter ego ‘Splat Benatar’ – is the first player of the sport to ever be awarded a Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. Brooks was recognized recently by Lt.-Gov. David Onley, on behalf of Gov.Gen. David Johnston, with a certificate and pin during a special ceremony at Queen’s Park along with several people “who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad.” Brooks is credited for reviving the sport of roller derby by creating the GTA Rollergirls, a not-for-profit league comprised of women of all ages, fitness levels and careers. “It was quite a shock,” revealed Brooks at one of the league’s Wednesday night practices at Bishop Marrocco/ Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School. “The players applied for me.” Brooks said she was
inspired by the 2006 A&E reality TV show Rollergirls, featuring the Lonestar Rollergirls, of the Austin Texas roller derby league. “I came off the couch and decided I wanted to do this,” Brooks told The Villager, adding she used to roller skate as a kid. Founded in 2007, the flat track league – comprised of all-star team the G-sTARs and the rookies, the Derby Debutants – played its first game of the season Saturday at the Bubble next to Ted Reeve arena in East York. “It’s an amazing workout,” said Cathy Kaddie, a.k.a ‘Cat the Conqueror’ as she sat on the sidelines of the track to chat. “I love the people I skate with – it’s such a welcoming sport. Everyone’s so nice and supportive.” When the Scarborough resident first started, she couldn’t skate at all. Everyone goes through a 10-week training program in preparation for the full-contact games. Players are taught how to stop, how to stride, how to hit and take a hit.
“I went to a game and my husband said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’” recalled Kaddie. It’s a time commitment. The teams practice three times a week on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. They play throughout Ontario and the U.S. How it works Two teams of five members roller skate in the same direction around the track. The game consists of a series of two-minute match ups called “jams” in which both teams designate a scoring player, the “jammer” who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. Meanwhile, each team helps its jammer while blocking the opposing jammer – which means they’re playing both offense and defense at the same time. Janine Yager, or ‘Brickhouse Bardot’, has been playing for five seasons. The Etobicoke resident said she wanted to join a lesbian soccer league, but when she discovered it

was full, decided to try roller derby. Her moniker was inspired by a neighbour. When she was 10, he told her she was built like a brick house. The name is “tough and sexy.” May Biley, a.k.a ‘Maykilla the Hun’, an Annex resident, has been a part of the league
since its inception. She says she loves the sport for its camaraderie and sense of community. Every practice is a challenge. “It doesn’t matter how slow you go – you’re always one lap ahead of that person on the couch,” Biley said. Since the beginning, the
GTA Rollergirls has supported the Parkdale Food Bank, Community Centre 55, the Heart & Stroke Foundation and even helped finance a private adoption.

Time for community spring cleaning
W
Write us
ith the changing season, and a sense of renewal in the air, Torontonians are heading outside to clean up their homes – and their
city. This weekend, kicking off with corporate and school cleanup day on Friday, the city will be getting a good (spring) cleaning at the hands of residents who want to make sure their city, their neighbourhood, and their own street is as pleasing as possible. These seemingly small actions by a group of residents helps build not only a sense of pride in the neighbourhood, but also a connection between those who live in it as they undertake a common goal. “It creates community,” said David Juliusson, program officer at Fort York National Historic Site, who is leading the cleanup of the historic site this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. “A lot of people in the neighbourhood are new... Something like this gives them a our view chance to meet other people.” What started in 2001 as a 20-minute cleanup initiative Help the by amalgamated Toronto’s community first mayor, Mel Lastman, has into a three-day city-wide all year long turned cleanup where people get out of their homes, grab a garbage bag and get working. The City of Toronto kicked off its annual spring cleanup campaign earlier in the month with the removal of graffiti, cleaning up garbage and hauling away debris from city property, which gathered over the long winter months. Coinciding with Earth Week (April 22 to 27), the cleanups are happening across the city – from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to the Beach, Parkdale to Bloor West. Too see what cleanup projects other Toronto communities are taking on and tips on how to get involved, see our special feature at http://bit. ly/1lxd5hY Not only do these cleanups make the city look great, but they bring out residents, students, businesses, organizations and community groups – many leading the cleanups, others joining in just because they care. These cleanup initiatives should be seen as just one of a multi-pronged approach to community building. Why not extend this kind of community exercise more often than once a year? You can find a community group / organization across the city. Look into joining one, and make a difference in your community.

Potential for a predictable council next term is high What an upset it would be if Councillor Adam Vaughan had his hat handed to him in the federal byelection in Trinity-Spadina. Anything is possible in politics. But in this hometurf byelection in a riding whose outgoing incumbent is busy with her own election, it’s hard to see Vaughan doing anything but winning, taking over Olivia Chow’s former riding the same way he took over her former ward in 2006. News of Vaughan’s expected Liberal candidacy emerged last week after a meeting with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. In the Liberal caucus, Vaughan would take the lead on cities. No doubt he’ll also make an impression in Question Period. At city hall, Vaughan has been one of the more effective opposition councillors – asking tough questions, deflating fatuous arguments and goading the Fords and their allies into red-faced rage (by my
david nickle the city completely unscientific observations, about once a meeting). It’s behaviour like that that has helped make the former journalist a very electable commodity in the downtown communities he represents – and less than that, across the breadth of the city – as became clear when earlier in the term he was seriously contemplating a run for mayor. As such, his departure leaves an interestingshaped hole in Toronto Council. It would be an exaggeration to say that Vaughan’s departure could mark a return to collegiality at the council that has become the Road-Warrior model of municipal government. But looking at the next term, there are going to be a number of departures that might just put the ‘order’ back in Robert’s
Rules. At least one Ford brother – Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford – isn’t returning for 2015. Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande, the former budget chief whose frequent rages at disruptive behaviour at council cause almost as much disruption, is retiring. York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti – he of the vote-pulling thumbs and bizarre anticommunist rhetoric – is showing every indication of coming back for now, but he’s facing a serious court hearing about his election expenses that could derail those plans. If all those people go – well of course we’ll miss them. The thing about outrageous characters like the aforementioned is they’re all eminently watchable, and therefore electable. What a dull and potentially productive council
we could have at the end of 2014. And it would be interesting to see what Vaughan can do in Ottawa. As a councillor, his reputation for a sharp tongue is matched by his track record as a deal broker – getting as many concessions as he can from the various developers looking to plant towers in the downtown neighbourhoods he represents. Vaughan has a genuine expertise, won on the ground, when it comes to urban issues. If Vaughan does indeed win the seat, and Trudeau does indeed win enough other seats to form a government, there’s a lot he could do in pushing the federal government into taking a greater role in urban life and infrastructure. He wouldn’t even have to be particularly nice about it.

Motion calls for national vision of integrated palliative care
9.95
$
>>>from page 1 “One thing I’ve noticed is, no matter if you’re in an urban or rural setting, when your loved one is dying, the patchwork of services is disturbing in that some systems are working very, very well and others are almost non-existent,” said Angus. “If you fall between the cracks – whether you’re in urban Toronto or in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, the effect of not having an integrated plan has enormous consequences for families, individuals, for caregivers and for the person who is facing possible death.” One of the key elements of the motion is a vision of ongoing care, of long-term, home and palliative care. The motion calls for a national vision of integrated palliative care.
Angus told his roundtable audience he was inspired to investigate the issue after the death of his brother-inlaw who passed away at 42. Angus and his family would sit with him night after night at Perram House hospice, which has since closed. “One night, the nurse came in around 11 o’clock and I was making tea and we sat down and talked. I asked her what it took to become a midwife of death – because that’s what palliative care is,” he said. “The key elements in the life of a family are birth and death. We can either have a really good experience or a very bad experience. When you have a bad experience, it has enormous implications for how a family reintegrates after a death. When Perram House
shut down, it was a wake up call to me.” He began to ask, ‘what is the state of palliative care in this country?’ That’s when he learned of “enormous disparities.” Dr. Mary Anne Huggins, medical director of the Dorothy Ley Hospice, agreed palliative care is an important aspect of our health care needs and a cohesive approach is necessary. There is a fear around palliative care, pointed out Pauline Phillips, program manager at Lakeside Long Term Care Centre. “People don’t want to talk about death. Then, it comes to other people making the decisions,” she said. “Talk about it – it’s something we need to talk about.”

GO proposal faster than subway Air-rail link first for electrification RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A transportation proposal unveiled last Thursday by the province for frequent express GO train service promises faster travel than the subway. If completed, the GO Regional Express Rail plan would expand GO train service from a commuter service limited to peak period trips to all day, everyday service, making for a faster alternative to the subway and reducing travel times in some cases by as much as half, said Premier Kathleen Wynne. “This will be a faster option for those who are travelling in and out of Toronto’s downtown core,” said Wynne who announced the plan alongside Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray at GO’s Willowbrook maintenance facility in Etobicoke. According to the plan, the new service would allow GO customers to get from the Kennedy subway and Go station in Scarborough to Union

Station in under 20 minutes at anytime, compared to the same route via subway, which would take almost 40 minutes. Train travel from any Toronto GO station would be faster by at least eight minutes than a similar route on the TTC. The express trains would also be fully electric, said Murray, with plans to phase out existing diesel units which
make up the bulk of GO service currently. “Electric trains will run frequently and they will be moving people much more quickly,” Murray said. “There will be increased capacity and higher connectivity,” he added. Murray also said the Union-Pearson Express air rail link service between Pearson International Airport and Union Station to debut next year will be a part of the service. Funding for the project is unknown, but Wynne said money would come from a recent $15 billion transit commitment to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area over 10 years. She also said Metrolinx was committed to introducing the service within the same time frame. Two-way, everyday GO Train service was launched on the GO Lakeshore East and West lines last year.

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Converting the UnionPearson (UP) Express air rail link to an electric train service will be the first step toward electrification of the entire GO rail network, said the president of Metrolinx. Speaking to reporters following last Thursday’s announcement from Premier Kathleen Wynne on plans to introduce frequent-service electric trains across the GO network, Bruce McCuaig said electrification work on the UP Express could start as early as 2015. That’s the same year the frequent rail service launches, and the UP Express will begin by running diesel trains between Pearson International Airport and Union Station. “The initial piece is UP, it was always intended to be the first step,” McCuaig said. “We’re starting electrification of UP Express next year subject to an environmental approval and funding.”
Completing electrification work would take three years of construction and would require the building of additional infrastructure along the UP route as well as the conversion of the diesel trains already purchased for the four-station route, which includes stops at Bloor and Weston GO stations. Metrolinx estimates the project will require funding in the neighbourhood of around $450 million, money which has not yet been provided by the province. $29-billion funding But McCuaig said he was confident the money would be made available within a $29-billion funding announcement made by the province this week, which includes a $15 billion commitment over 10 years to transit improvements that are part of Metrolinx’s Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). “We’re gong to be looking
at how we can deploy these funds to increase the level of service on GO Transit and also to electrify the service,” he said. Earlier in the month, Metrolinx announced it had completed a provincial environmental assessment (EA) studying how to best electrify the service, which will run on the Georgetown South GO rail corridor, also known as the Kitchener line. The full report is available at www.gotransit.com/electrification/en/default.aspx until the end of the month. Prior to that, another report was prepared by Metrolinx on how to electrify the Lakeshore and Kitchener corridors. But with the announcement from Wynne and Ontario Transport Minister Glen Murray on the plan to electrify all GO rail tracks within 10 years, McCuaig said more study will be necessary.
i
Glen Murray says the time frame for electrification on UP and the rest of the network will be up to Metrolinx.

Fort York had just seven volunteers because of bad weather. The cleanups offer both businesses and residents a chance to unite for the greater objective of keeping our communities tidy. Anyone willing to help is welcome to the cleanups. Liberty Village BIA will have its cleanup on April 25 from 1:30 to 2 p.m.; Garrison Commons will have its cleanup on April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon. “Just show up,” Juliusson said. “Make sure you have the proper boots and I’ll provide the gloves and bags.” The city’s clean-up days coincide with Earth Week (April 22-27) as part of Toronto’s initiative to keep the city green. The city advises volunteers to wear appropriate clothing, not to pick up dangerous materials such as needles, metal, chemicals, medical waste or hazardous materials.
