Parkdale ‘Lovebot’ creator hopes ‘group hug’ can conquer negativity

night light

Online petition aims to ‘kill Lovebot with hate of Lovebot’, calling it a ‘visual plague’ Hilary caton hcaton@insidetoronto.com The popular Toronto Lovebot art piece hasn’t been feeling the love lately. A man by the name of Kirk Hero has started a petition targeting Lovebot on change.org The petition aims to “kill Lovebot with hate of Lovebot” because it’s a “visual plague disguised as something beneficial to the community,” and is what

Hero calls “nonsense.” So far the petition has 120 signatures. The Parkdale creator of the small robot got wind of the distaste for his robot, which was created for his maternal grandmother, and was shocked to say the least. “At first I thought it was a joke. It sounds like a joke. I don’t know what you could do to stop Lovebot,” Matthew Del >>>LOVEBOT, page 5

Cooks savour commercial kitchen offered at Scadding Court centre Kitchen with all the ‘bells and whistles’ set up in a shipping container JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With its Market 707 a huge success, Scadding Court Community Centre has cooked up a new use for shipping containers. Years after the market saw a

variety of vendors set up shop along Dundas Street West in used shipping containers, Scadding Court recently opened its own commercial kitchen to give entrepreneurial cooks, bakers, and catering companies a place to prepare their goodies.

“The way it was designed was to provide someone who currently runs a small food business in their kitchen way up in their apartment tower with a chance to work in a bigger space with all the bells and whistles,” said Scadding Court interim executive director

Herman Ellis. “We give them a safe space where they can be more productive because they have more room to work with, and then we teach them how to market their product.” The commercial kitchen costs as little as $10 per hour to rent – far less than most commercial kitchen spaces – and the proceeds go back into Scadding’s community programs.

Though still a relatively new amenity, the commercial kitchen is already booked to roughly 70 per cent of capacity. Ellis said he hopes to bring that number higher as word begins to spread about it. “Having it booked about 85 per cent of the time would be ideal,” he said. Program offers candlemakers a brighter future JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com In a small room in the basement of Evangel Hall Mission near Bathurst and Adelaide streets, a few dedicated craftspeople are making candles and a better life for themselves. The Mission’s This Little Light Candles initiative, led by craftsperson Lorraine Leader, sees two candlemakers making all-natural beeswax candles, which they sell online, to churches, at craft shows and elsewhere. After a successful year of making liturgical candles, the program is set to expand to hopefully add more candlemakers to the roster. “We hire people from the local community – one lives in the housing upstairs (at Evangel Hall) and both our candlemakers are marginalized women who have been through a lot of trauma,” Leader said. “It’s a life-changing experience for them.” Leader noted This Little Light Candles not only provides work experience and a source of income to supplement the meagre social assistance cheques participants

receive, it also serves as a form of therapy and helps boost the women’s self-confidence and self-esteem. “We’re in a safe environment that’s calming, and we use all natural beeswax – no paraffin – so it smells

great, too,” she said. “Making the candles is a form of therapy, and we add some music, laughter and chatting.” This Little Light started out as a therapeutic program, in fact, before

morphing into a social enterprise in which participants can make a little money. With the success the program has enjoyed so far, Leader said the plan is to continue to grow for the foreseeable future. “Right now, I’m looking at hiring another person this spring, or maybe two, plus a shop assistant,” she said. “Eventually, we want to build to the point where we have 10 to 12 candlemakers.” She added the program was designed to be self-sustaining after receiving seed money from the Toronto Enterprise Fund. “The money from the Toronto Enterprise Fund paid for our stock and our studio – before that, we were working in a corner of the chapel (at Evangel Hall,)” she said. “Now we have a sustainable model. We’re not looking necessarily to transition people from social assistance into employment, we’re looking to give people a way to augment what they make from social assistance and help break the cycle of social isolation.” Eugene Hennie has joined This Little Light Candles as the marketing, sales and outreach coordinator

and is working hard to spread the word about the social enterprise. “The candles are sold mostly in churches, but we’ve also been approaching a lot of craft shows and we’re in the process of approaching stores, florists and wedding planners,” he said. In addition to liturgical candles, This Little Light makes everything from pillars to birthday candles. Hennie offered a timely sales pitch for the product. “They would make a wonderful Valentine’s present, and we’ll deliver them with a rose to anywhere in the downtown core on Valentine’s Day,” he said. “How great would it be to give it as a gift to the person you love knowing that you’re helping marginalized women rebuild their lives?” This Little Light Candles are available through the social enterprise’s website and will also be available at St. Andrew’s Church’s annual Mardi Gras performance, also fittingly titled This Little Light.

ow celebrating its ninth year in Ontario, Family Day on Monday, Feb. 15, this year has become a welcomed long holiday weekend for many. But whether or not people spend that time with their families is another question entirely. It’s certainly not because there’s a shortage of funfilled events across the city. From the annual Family Day skates hosted by several community groups to winter fundraisers by nonprofit organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, people of all ages can participate. Do something educational by having kids attend winter nature programs at Rouge Park or take a family friendly tour of the Ontario Legislative Building while participating in a scavenger hunt at Queen’s Park. Just visit www.insidetoronto.com/toronto-whatson/ to see all the events and our view activities in your community the whole family can enjoy. Perhaps this weekend will be Get out enjoy a time for couples instead to enjoy dinner out this Sunday with the long Valentine’s Day coinciding with weekend Family Day weekend. Some restaurants are sure to be completely booked already, while others may have a long waiting list. Make those reservations now. For those willing to trek downtown, keep in mind there will be plenty of visitors in town with Toronto hosting the NBA All-Star Game along with all the basketball festivities taking place at various venues leading up to the tip-off Sunday evening. Look for car lovers, too, as the 2016 Canadian International AutoShow kicks off Friday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. And the Hockey Hall of Fame is getting in on the Family Day action by offering free admission for kids Monday. Just one note however, with the threat of a potential taxi protest, the TTC might prove to be the better way this weekend if you are commuting down to the core. Whether Family Day is a time to spend with family or just an extra day off, the city has a lot to offer this weekend. Go out and take advantage of it.

column

There’s hope for Toronto’s fiscal future, but not this year Nothing has changed. Going into next week’s budget debate, Toronto council will be considering a 1.3 per cent inflationary property tax increase, with some, but not all, of the services the mayor and council promised last year. It’s all buoyed by a banner year in land transfer tax revenue, surpluses from last year and reserves for rainy days. It’s all fine, right? Well not really. On Tuesday, Toronto city manager Peter Wallace reiterated and amplified points he made at the beginning of Toronto’s budget process in late 2015. To whit: the whole thing – the city’s operating budget, tax rate, service levels, capital plans – is all unsustainable. At the Tuesday executive committee, he put it as bluntly as he could. “We as staff will constrain expense growth and we are very successful in this, but in balance, council has shown

david nickle the city a propensity to increase service levels. That leads us to a conversation around what service levels will you cut. If you’re not willing to cut service levels, that leaves us with a conversation on revenue.” Or more bluntly still: “Council needs to step back and decide not only what it says it funds, but what it actually funds.” Now, this is the point in the budget column when I would shift into excoriating the budget committee for being hopeless morons who can’t put fiduciary duty ahead of craven politics. And there will be a bit of that: the 2016 budget is a duct-tape and chewing-gum affair that sets up unrealistic expectations among property taxpayers, and barring another miraculous year of growth in Toronto’s real

estate bubble.. er, market... makes things only harder to cobble together next year. The budget committee and the mayor ought to have known better. Now that that’s out of the way, there is some hope things will get better. During debate and afterward, Mayor John Tory and nearly everyone on the executive committee fell in with their city manager’s tune. Right after the budget is complete, council will get to work on a multi-stage debate on new revenue tools and possibly also higher taxes, held against the prospect of dramatic service cuts. Tory took a first step in that direction at the committee, albeit one he’d already taken publicly, putting forward an amendment to go ahead with a long-term 0.5 per cent property tax levy to pay for new infrastructure, in what he called the City Building Fund. It is a first step, and it would politically be the easiest thing for it to be the

last step. But Tory is making it pretty clear he values the advice, even the contrary advice, from senior civil servants. He swallowed his pride when chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat released a report telling him the city shouldn’t attempt the full SmartTrack plan that he promised. And he made it clear in a short interview after the meeting that he values this advice, too. “Why would you pay anybody good money if you didn’t want to listen to what they have to say or have them say it in some way that’s muffled?” said Tory. “That’s not how you get results. Quality people speak the truth to whoever they’re speaking to.” In that respect, at least, it looks as though something has changed. We’ll see if it holds after council votes on the budget next week.

Lovebot supporters gather at park for group hug >>>from page 1 Degan told The Villager. “When someone petitions against what you do every day it’s odd. The negativity in this world is endless and you’re really going to add to it?” The Villager contacted Hero, but he did not respond in time for our press deadline. The Lovebot can be found across the city from small stencils on sidewalks and buildings to robots amounting to a few feet tall that can be seen at some businesses. Some have even tattooed the Lovebot on their body, said Del Degan. He knows of 12 people who have one, so he’s not sure where all the hate is coming from and why. The online petition has already gathered a few comments agreeing with Hero’s general hate for the lovable robot. One commenter went as far as saying, “The whole idea of Lovebot is a perfect representative of everything wrong

with contemporary, gentrified Toronto.” As an artist Del Degan expects that not everyone will like his work and chalks it up to personal taste, but promoting the hatred of a creation that is meant to symbolize love is what he calls “very petty.”

I didn’t want to be passive either and let the hate continue, so I thought why not do something positive. – Matthew Del Degan

“It’s funny how someone would hate something so positive for no real reason,” he added. “My argument is this world’s got enough problems. There’s a laundry list of the sad nature of the world and it’s huge….there’s be-headings, hunger and environmental issues and you’re picking on

a love thing that’s trying to make people smile? That’s been the intent from the beginning. I just wanted to do something cute that made people smile.” So to keep the love flowing he organized a group hug at Trinity Bellwoods Park on Sunday. He said he got the idea from a Markham man who organized something similar in his neighbourhood after it experienced some hard times. After hearing about it, he thought it’d be perfect to respond to hate with more love. “I didn’t want to be passive either and let the hate continue, so I thought why not do something positive,” said the Dundas Street West and Brock Avenue resident. Although the idea that someone went through all this trouble to spread hate for his creation is hurtful, he said, it will in no way discourage him from continuing on.

Lovebot supporters share a group-hug Sunday in Trinity Bellwoods Park, organized by Lovebot creator Matthew Del Degan in response to a petition against his street-art project.

It’s inspired him to work “10 times harder.” “When you take a strongwilled person like myself and

do what he’s doing, all he’s done is just light a fire under my butt,” Del Degan said. “I’ve worked really hard

to earn my level of respect through hard work and dedication over the years and I plan to keep doing it.”

The most recent numbers posted for the Union Pearson (UP) Express indicate sagging ridership for the air rail link. Critics of the four-stop train line between Union Station and Toronto Pearson airport say high fares price out all but the wealthiest of travelers. The new numbers show an average of around 2,400 UP users during the months of November and December 2015, down sharply from previous months. Over the same period, UP trains, which can hold more than 170, were less than 10 per cent full. In a report to the Metrolinx board, UP President Kathy Haley says dips are expected while UP builds its ridership. This weekend, UP is completely free to use from Feb. 13-15.

Speaking of the long weekend, it’s promising to be a busy one with the NBA All-Star Game, Valentine’s Day, the Canadian International AutoShow – and in all likelihood another taxi strike.

TO in TRANSIT Details were scarce early in the week, but it appears disgruntled drivers will stage a public disruption over the weekend intended to spotlight their frustrations toward the UberX private cab service. The United Taxi Workers Association promises the protest will be more forceful than last December’s day-long action which saw drivers block streetcars and get into violent confrontations with suspected Uber operators. stations to get funding wcharging

It appears there’s a lot of interest in a provincial funding program for electric vehicle charging stations. The $20-million Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario (EVCO) granting program was introduced by the Liberal government late last year as a way to address the lack of charging stations.

“Building up a more robust network of chargers at workplaces, residential buildings and public places, as well as along major highways, will go a long way toward conquering drivers’ range anxiety,” says the group Partners in Project Green, a partnership between the Greater Toronto Airport Authority and the Toronto Region Conservation Authority.
