Let welfare recipients keep first $200: DiNovo LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

Plenty of things to do, places to go in weekly calendar / 6

Parkdale-High Park MPP and Community and Social Services critic Cheri DiNovo is asking Minister Ted McMeekin for a commitment to let those on social assistance keep the first $200 of their monthly employment earnings. DiNovo made the request in light of an annual report card on child poverty, released Feb. 28. “Every dollar counts,” DiNovo told The Villager. “It’ll help hugely. Especially since those on OW (Ontario Works) receive only $600 a month and those on ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) receive

$1,000.” This is the minimum the government can do, said the local politician. “It’s time for this minority government to deliver on its promises,” said DiNovo, adding that one in seven children in Ontario live in poverty. For the past decade, the Liberals have been promising action on poverty, yet housing and health benefits have been cut, child benefits delayed and minimum wage frozen below the poverty line, said DiNovo. The report was issued by Campaign 2000, a cross-Canada public education movement whose aim is to raise awareness >>>significant, page 5

If a casino were to be built at Exhibition Place, Councillor Mike Layton said his constituents in Liberty Village would be left living in the shadow of it. “Traffic in and out of the neighbourhood is congested at the best of times, add to that casino traffic and it would be nearly impossible,” Layton said. “The figures are something like 10,000 more cars every eight hours. That is a lot of traffic.” Concern by residents over

traffic as well as property values and general quality of life should a casino be built at Exhibition Place has prompted the councillor to schedule a community consultation. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the residents’ concerns and some of the issues they would like to see Layton raise during debates on a proposed Toronto casino. Council will make its decision about the casino likely in April. The town hall meeting will be held on the fouth floor of the Brazen Head, 165 East Liberty St., Thursday, March 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Life-long dream to design cars comes true for local graduate LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School graduate’s career trajectory has received an unexpected, yet exciting new boost. Reymin Deleon, 21, currently an industrial design student at Humber College, has won an internship at General Motors (GM) that starts in the spring. Deleon was one of just five students from across Canada and the US to win the GM Interactive Design Competition 2012 thus securing himself a paid internship while kick-starting his career, a life-long dream to design cars. The winners saw their designs displayed at the North American International Motor Show last month. “It’s a one-shot deal,” the Keele Street and St. Clair Avenue-area resident told The Villager. “It feels big.” This was Deleon’s second

attempt at the design competition. Deleon joined the two-part competition in June and spent the entire summer working on designing the next GMC Terrain SUV. Competitors could choose to design the next Buick Lacrosse, Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Camero or GMC and each had to design both its interior and exterior. Deleon chose the GMC Terrain and like all competitors was required to include new technologies, unique storage opportunities and “infotainment solutions etc. that are focused on the brand and its target customer.” “I focused on the cus-

Fate of tree near John Gibson House undecided The fate of a large Norway Maple tree just south-west of John Gibson House is not yet written in stone. “We are looking at every opportunity to figure out a way to save the tree,” said Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton. The tree was cited for removal because John Gibson House is installing wheelchair access at the front of their building as part of a threestorey addition on the back of the building, which is located inside Trinity Bellwoods Park. “They need to do the changes to the building, they need to upgrade it,” Layton said of John Gibson House, which provides permanent supportive housing for 50 vulnerable older adults and seniors who are at risk in the community. But, according to Layton, the city is still investigating whether or not the tree needs to come down to accommodate the ramp. “We need to give the tree

some consideration because it has probably been there for 60 years and will probably outlive the ramp if we were to work around it,” Layton said. Layton’s office met Tuesday with the city’s building department, residents and representatives from John

on long road trips. “I tied the whole design around the car to that,” he said. “I gave it a rugged feel.” Out of 200 entries, 16

competitors were chosen to move onto the competition’s second phase and then from those 16 finalists, five winners were selected to whom GM offered the internships.

Deleon will go to Detroit in June. Ever since he was a kid, Deleon has always known he wanted to design cars. “It’s my dad who got me into it. My dad’s side of the family has a fascination with cars – I caught the bug,” he said. “This is a really big opportunity to gain experience and exposure.” Deleon graduated from The Art School @ Marrocco three years ago. He excelled throughout high school, said art teacher Heather Corriveau. “It’s such a proud moment for me. I taught him art for four years. He was a really talented kid,” she said. “ H u m b e r C o l l e g e’s Industrial Design (one of the best industrial design colleges in the country) is a tough program. He’s one of a handful of kids who I’ve taught who got into industrial design. He had a strong portfolio out of high school.”

Scholarship awarded at PAVE’s annual women’s day luncheon LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The sixth annual Parkdale Anti-Violence Education w o r k i n g g r o u p ( PAV E ) International Women’s Day luncheon serves to celebrate women’s accomplishments while showcasing female talent within the ParkdaleHigh Park area. PAVE is comprised of a group of area organizations, including the Four Villages Community Health Centre, the women’s agency Sistering, St. Christopher House and women’s safe haven, the Redwood Shelter, among a host of others, who band together throughout the year organizing events and activities for women. The events, such as the annual National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on Dec. 6, focus on raising awareness for the issue of violence, Stephanie Gordon, the Redwood Shelter’s community outreach counsellor and a steering committee member

of PAVE, told The Villager. The International Women’s Day luncheon, on Tuesday, March 12, will showcase several female performers from the neighbourhood. “We’re encouraging female youth to participate since the event falls on March Break,” said Gordon. The lunch, said another PAVE committee member, Peggy-Gail DeHal-Gunraj, provides a meeting place for women in the community. “It’s a way for the staff of organizations to reach out to women and to create a comfortable space for women in the community to also connect with each other,” she said. A highlight of the yearly reception is the Rosie McGroarty Scholarship bestowed upon a woman who holds similar values that McGroarty did. “She cared a lot about the community,” recalled Gordon. McGroarty was a familiar face at the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre (PARC)

where she prepared breakfast every morning for those seeking refuge from the street. Despite facing violence in her own life, she worked hard to improve not only hers, but also the lives of fellow community members. McGroarty was murdered in November of 2005 at the hands of her spouse. She had gone missing a month earlier, reportedly to visit her mother, who was ill. The scholarship was established to commemorate McGroarty while carrying on her work helping those in need of financial support. “The woman who wins this award will be going back to school in the academic year commencing in the year in which the scholarship is granted,” said Gordon. The International Women’s Day event takes place Tuesday, March 12 at Masaryk-Cowan Community Recreation Centre, 220 Cowan Ave., from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Planning better roundtables

Write us

T

he city’s Chief Planner, Jennifer Keesmaat, hosted the first in a series of roundtables Feb. 26 where residents could speak to her, and 12 city building experts, about the city’s future. What a brilliant idea, our view especially when City Hall often feels like a place where residents More locations are not heard. The city is facing many chalwell worth the lenges – chief among them, transit. However, there are many additional cost others on the horizon as we move toward building a truly world-class city with an ever-increasing population. Those very challenges should be seen as great opportunities, and Keesmaat’s roundtables will, hopefully, help harness them. The first roundtable discussed the concept of designing and creating public spaces, in the hope of enhancing the public realm. The roundtable discussed partnerships between the city and its agencies, private developers, and BIAs. On Tuesday, the topic was ‘The Resilient City’ – a discussion on how to achieve a vibrant, strong and resilient city. As things change – demographics, environment degradation, income, access to healthy food, infrastructure, etc. – how does a city stay resilient? All praise aside, there is a glaring issue: these roundtables take place at City Hall between 9 a.m. and noon – which limits this process from the get-go. Most people work during those hours. If the city is truly interested in public engagement, the roundtables should be open to more Torontonians by having one session during the day, another one at night – and perhaps across the city. It is this point that is most important when considering the April 2 topic: ‘The Next Generation Suburbs’. Discussing the suburbs during the day at City Hall seems short-sighted. And, the idea of calling anywhere outside the old city of Toronto a ‘suburb’ also breeds a disconnect across the city. It definitely doesn’t ‘build’ a common direction. Every neighbourhood has its own unique needs. The needs of Parkdale, Liberty Village or Roncesvalles are not the same as those in north Etobicoke, central North York or south Scarborough – each neighbourhood, across the city, is distinct. We realize opening the roundtables may be more costly, but this is a cost well worth absorbing in order to engage the entire city – especially if the promise of these roundtables is to produce, according to the city’s website, a “series of actions that will identify immediate steps and set the stage for future initiatives.”

Telefilm on Layton packs emotional punch Lottery can fund transit david nickle

In a few days, those of us so inclined will have an opportunity to relive the summer of 2011 – when Jack Layton, the first New Democrat federal Opposition leader and almost prototypical progressive Toronto politician, succumbed to cancer. It was emotionally wrenching then; and watching the new telefilm Jack, it is nearly as wrenching now. The film, which was screened for the family, supporters and some media earlier this week, airs Sunday night, March 10, on CBC. Jack is far from perfect — it paints an at-points absurdly sunny picture of the very political life that Jack Layton and Olivia Chow led together, and for a biopic offers frustratingly few clues about the things that contributed to Layton’s politics and political drive. As my companion at the screening pointed out, there’s no “rosebud” moment in Jack. With that said: The telefilm packs an emotional punch. Much of that can be credited

the city to the eerily-accurate impersonations by Rick Roberts as Layton, and Sook-Yin Lee as Olivia Chow. For those of us who’ve spent time with Layton and Chow, watching the couple’s last months and earlier days re-enacted so uncannily is extraordinarily and unexpectedly moving. It will be curious to see how the film is received by viewers outside the bubble of Toronto, and national politics. Because like it or not — Jack is more than a film about a politician. Coming less than two years after Layton’s death, when Layton’s successor Thomas Mulcair is aiming to be prime minister in 2015, and Olivia Chow is likely considering a run for mayor in Toronto a year earlier, Jack is something of a rallying call for progressively-inclined voters. This, of course, is an extension of what Layton clearly

intended when he handed off his death-bed letter to Chow, and the rest of the country, with that stirring call toward optimism and love and kindness. It is also an extension of his detailed instructions, delivered earlier in that same letter, telling his party how best to mobilize in the months following his death. Layton was a politician to the core – even in his final moments. It’s tempting to be cynical on that basis and dismiss Jack as nothing more than an exercise in publicly-funded NDP propaganda. It would be easier to do that if the sometimes hokey idealism depicted in the film weren’t so accurate a reflection of how it manifested in the real lives of Layton and Chow; if the story of a generally decent, earnest and publicly-motivated political couple who finally won and then lost again, weren’t the story we’d all lived through just two years past.

Re: ‘Smarter commuting could save TTC money,’ Special Report, Feb. 28. I have enjoyed all the articles on transit. I have one suggestion for funding that I haven’t heard anyone talk about before. In order to help fund the development of the initial infrastructure and construction, why not develop a special lottery. If there is money to win, then people will buy tickets. It might be a good way to raise some funds instead of always relying on raising taxes, fees and road tolls. I also support the Toronto casino bid as another way to fund transit, but I do not have faith that our council will vote for it. They are too worried amount a slight increase in gambling addiction that will be so insignificant in the scheme of things. Rick Jackson

Launched in 1991, the nonpartisan campaign was born out of concern for the lack of government progress in eradicating child poverty. Si n c e i t s i n c e p t i o n , Campaign 2000 has grown to encompass more than 120 provincial, national and community partners involved in child and family issues, such as children’s aid societies, faith, community and health agencies, school boards and low-income organizations. The Campaign 2000 report makes several recommendations, including: • an enhanced child benefit for low-income families to a maximum of $5,400 per child per year; • “addressing income equality by restoring fairness to the personal taxation system,” while “reintroducing the principal of taxation based on the ability to pay”;

• and a long-term national housing strategy, which reflects the needs of local communities and the immediate needs of families and social housing providers across the country. Newly instated Minister of Community and Social Services Ted McMeekin, MPP for Ancaster-DundasFlamborough-Westdale, “just two weeks on the job,” said he’s “working his way through the report.” “I have spoken to Cheri on a number of occasions... The time is ripe. The premier has said she wants to be the social justice premier. It’s my job to make sure the decisions we make are decisions that will really assist people,” McMeekin told The Villager.

There are 90,000 Ontarians who currently benefit from OW and ODSP. “Every decision we make has the potential to impact, sometimes critically, a lot of people,” he said. The government has made significant investments when it comes to children and families since 2003, he pointed out. It has created the Ontario Child Benefit, which provides as much as $1,100 per child to more than one million children each year. “ We’ve gotten 43,000 children out of poverty since implementing the Ontario Child Benefit,” said McMeekin. The Liberal government has, since 2004, increased OW and ODSP by 14.9 per cent, he said. It has implemented fullday kindergarten, which the Liberal government says will save families as much as $6,500 each year in childcare costs if their child is enrolled. And, the provincial govern-

ment has invested more than $17 million into the Student Nutrition Program while partnering with charities, businesses, school boards and all levels of government to ensure that more than 660,000 children have access to healthy meals in Ontario’s schools. Referring to the Commission for the Review of Social Assistance in Ontario, McMeekin highlighted a quote from the premier’s throne speech: “... Your new government will work to help the unemployed find a job. And, to ensure that the challenging path they must navigate to free themselves from social assistance is not made unduly difficult, your government will enable them to keep more of what they earn through their hard work.” DiNovo admitted she’s feeling “quite hopeful.” “We’re trying to keep the pressure up,” she said.

Make your start-up a success Becoming a business owner is a goal for maney women. Starting a business is seldom easy, but the process can be streamlined when a person knows the steps to take. Female entrepreneurs are collectively known as “Janes,” and they are a big part of the continent’s financial landscape. For women who want to become Janes, there are certain steps to take to develop and launch a business. There are many resources and steps that can help women start a company. Find a mentor. Look online for organizations that provide free resources for the female small business owner. Individuals also can connect with current busi-

ness owners in the neighborhood and pick their brains. Write a business plan. Getting thoughts written out in black and white can be a good organizational step. Listing the type of business, marketing ideas, competition, and financial data is a good place to start. Secure funding. Businesses require start-up capital. Some small business owners have their own savings they’ll be devoting to the business, while others solicit investors. The majority of business developers apply for a business loan. This is where a business plan can be an asset. Also, grants may be an option.

Secure legal representation. There are certain business laws and employee laws that an individual will need to know to avoid fines and other legal recourse. Securing legal representation ahead of time can help prospective business owners navigate the legal system. Budget and plan for marketing and advertising. It’s important to get the word out about the new business. Think about community-based forums that can advertise the new business. A Web site and newspaper advertising, both in print and online, can be a good starting point. – MS

TTC’s customer charter promises Art to be displayed on hoarding walls rahul gupta improved service, reliability RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com

HOME IMPROVEMENT Directory

The TTC is promising a new customer charter will fuel immediate improvement in the transit provider’s record of service and reliability. Before media and commuters at Bloor subway station recently, CEO Andy Byford said the charter will make the TTC directly accountable for improving its quality of service in five major areas including service reliability, station and vehicle cleanliness and improved information updates. It lists 31 specific improvements to be met in 2013. The charter also promises the TTC will post the performance of every bus and streetcar route each quarter. Other charter commitments include a pilot program for wireless internet in both St. George and Bloor stations and a revamped

easier to read TTC system map. Both are scheduled for the end of 2013. “This is further evidence of our determination to provide better customer service on the TTC,” said Byford, who helped implement similar customer charters while at Sydney, Australia’s Railcorp as well as the London Underground. TTC chair Karen Stintz said the charter will also address rider safety issues. “We do have many measures to keep our customers safe,” said Stintz, listing security cameras, the presence of transit enforcement officers and monitors in collection booths as examples. While the charter does not make any commitments to address rude rider behaviour, Stintz said the pledge to address other issues such as improving station cleanliness would lead to less “frustration” for riders. “I think as we demonstrate

we are willing to (meet customer expectations), then I think out customers will respond in kind.” One subway taker was skeptical the TTC could deliver on its charter commitments. Domenico Baronello said the TTC wouldn’t be able to improve its quality of service because of capacity issues which are getting worse. “It’s a structural problem so it doesn’t matter their good intentions,” said Baronello while waiting for a train at Bloor station. One charter promise will took effect Friday, March 1, with revamped bus shelter maps and stop poles on the 94 Wellesley bus route as a pilot project starting. The new designs were revealed earlier in the week at the TTC’s regular board meeting.

Artwork will soon adorn a retaining wall near the temporary Strachan Avenue realignment. Strachan Illustrated: A Showcase of Community Art will showcase work by artists on the temporary wall lining the venue, north of East Liberty Street. Contributors include students from Niagara Street Junior Public School, Liberty Village BIA and Strachan House.

ttc signal upgrades to close subway Parts of the Yonge University Spadina subway line will be closed on weekends for the next three weeks as work continues on the TTC’s signaling system upgrades. On the weekends of March 9, 16 and 23 there will be no train service between St. George and Union stations. To compensate, the TTC will run shuttle buses and more streetcar service on the Dundas 505 line. The work is part of the TTC’s switch to an automatic train control system set to

contraflow bike lanes approved Davenport MPP Jonah Schein, who had been seeking clarification from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, said he received confirmation contraflow lanes are a go. The lanes allow cyclists to travel in both directions on some one-way streets. But work couldn’t continue until the province confirmed the lanes were legal as the provincial Highway and Traffic Act prohibits two-way travel down a one-way road.

free gas for smarter commuting Not-for-profit group Summerhill Impact is looking for Toronto participants for its vehicle measurement program and is hoping free gas is an incentive to sign up. Shuttle is a one-month

program where people have their driving patterns monitored for the first two weeks. Following that, they are given an additional two weeks to reduce their driving amount by 10 per cent. Everyone who completes the program gets a free gas card. For details, contact www.summerhillimpact.ca

ttc wins award for victoria park reno The TTC announced it has received the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ 2013 Sustainable Communities Award for its eco-friendly renovation work at Victoria Park station, which was completed in 2011. The station now has a new bus bay, a green roof and more windows creating opportunities for natural lighting. Chair Karen Stintz accepted the award at the TTC’s board meeting last week. Dr. O.K. Medical and Dental Centre CompletefamilyhealthservicesonTheQueensway Two and a half years ago, Dr. Oleg Klipitch and his wife Dr. Olena Klipitch opened the doors to one of Etobicoke’s most unique and accessible medical centres. Profiled by The Etobicoke Guardian for being a shining example of service to a multicultural community from its outset, the Dr. O.K. Medical and Dental Centre has continued to grow and expand. Operating out of their state-of-the-art facility on 1278 The Queensway, the centre is embraced by the surrounding community for its multi-disciplinary approach to family medicine and a broad variety of services that are accessible and comfortable for the diverse area. Dr. Klipitch and his team strive to offer the community a full range of health services under the convenience of one roof. With changes to OHIP coverage, many clinics and medical centres have been forced to scale back the range of services they offer. Dr. O.K. Medical and Dental Centre has done just the opposite - working to continually expand the range of services offered in order to best accommodate the busy lifestyles of Etobicoke residents. Just as Etobicoke finds success through working and growing as a community, the Dr. O.K. Medical and Dental Centre staff believes in teamwork as a core value of the practice. The centre’s four family physicians go beyond what a single doctor can offer because they are registered as a Family Health Organization. Even if a patient’s individual family doctor is not in the clinic when needed, the other doctors on staff are available to assist. The clinic also has an internal medicine specialist on staff, Dr. Barchan, who is available for consultations and even limited same-day referrals. The newest member of the Dr. O.K. centre is Dr. Caroline Oczachowski. With many family doctors retiring and most medical students going into highly specialized fields of medicine, Dr. Oczachowski is a valuable asset to the community because she is currently accepting new patients, as is Dr. Arta Bedaj, another family physician who has been at the centre for two years. Growing up in Windsor, Ontario, Dr. Oczachowski went to medical school in Poland before completing a residency in Atlanta, GA. Desiring a practice closer to home, Dr. Oczachowski was happy to join

the team and is expanding her expertise to include the field of cosmetic procedures, another facet of Dr. O.K.’s multi-disciplinary centre. Dr. Klipitch, Dr Bedaj, and the staff have received extensive training and provide the following cosmetic procedures: Botox, fillers, latisse, veinandvascularprocedures. They will soon continue to expand the already large range of services to include photo rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, laser/IPL hair reduction, chemical peels, skin care products, fat cell destruction, and supplements. Perhaps the most interesting new cosmetic technology is a new technique called Selphyl. Using a platelet rich plasma derived from running components al-

Medical and Dental Centre has worked to continually expand the range of services offered in order to best accommodate the busy lifestyles of Etobicoke residents.“ ready present in the patient’s own body through a centrifuge, Selphyl is a more natural option in cosmetics. Dr. Oleg has had great success with Selphyl – and not only with his patients. “I’m brave enough to say that I have even tried it on myself,” says Dr. Oleg. “It is not a miracle creation but it greatly helps the body rejuvenate in specific areas and it works.” The medical services are only one of four distinct entities that operate out of the Dr. O.K Medical and Dental Centre. Just across the lobby is the dental centre, run by Oleg’s wife, Dr. Olena Klipitch. She and her staff provide services for all members of the family, including general dentistry, orthodontics, implants, cosmetics and dental surgery on the weekends.

She credits her success to the high standards of cleanliness and high-tech equipment that are above and beyond what is necessary. “The office is really unique because all of the appliances and tools are top of the line. Eventheairiscleanedtosurgicalstandards,” says Olena. The third component of the centre is a physiotherapy clinic operated by Andriy Kashuba and his experienced staff, who specialize in physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, kinesiology and massage to prevent health problems and help deal with chronic injuries and pain. Kashuba believes in keeping up on new technology and recently invested in bringing Shockwave Therapy to his offices.Through this non-invasive treatment, intense short energy waves are applied to injured tissue or joints to increase blood flow, speed healing and help reduce pain. The genuine human appeal of the Dr. O.K. Medical and Dental clinic is well represented in the customer service provided by the pharmacy, administered by Maher Shaker, who runs his business with a genuine focus on being able to serve his community, regardless of age or language. He also offers a seniors’ discount on over the counter and prescription services. Dr. Nadia Belsky has been practicing medicine for 35 years and actually came out of retirement to work at the Dr. O.K. Medical and Dental Centre. In her opinion, the need for more family-focused medical facilities is at an all-time high in Etobicoke. “In the west end I know personally 11 doctors that retired in the last year. Each had almost 2,500 patients, so that is almost 30,000 people that lost a family doctor,” says Belsky. With the need for accessible health services increasing in the Etobicoke area, the Dr. O.K. Medical and Dental Centre continues to make it a priority to offer local residents full access to quality health care services within their community. For more information about their services, visit online at www.drok.ca, or in person at 1278 The Queensway.
