Wabash Building Society meets fundraising goal

‘STOP THE CRAZY’
The community effort to reclaim and renovate the fenced-in space between the old linseed oil factory and the field house in Sorauren Park hit a milestone. Doug Bennet, chair of the Wabash Building Society, which is spearheading the improvements, announced recently that as of their May 1 deadline the Wabash Building Society had raised the $125,000 needed to meet grant requirements that trigger a total of $350,000 to start renovating a new ‘Town Square’. “By the end of this year that fence will be down,” Bennet said. Fighting diesel trains with letter writing bee ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com For nine-year-old Miguel Kumar, his motivations for penning a letter to provincial officials, calling on them to use electric trains as opposed to diesel, is simple. “I want to stop the diesel trains because all of the gas and the noise makes pollu-
tion,” Kumar said. “I hope to make them think more about the environment.” North Parkdale residents Kumar and his father, Jorge Miguel, who is on the Wabash Building Society Board and also sits on the Metrolinx Noise Wall Community Advisory Committee, were among a dozen families who attended a “Letter Writing Bee” at the

The Wabash Building Society organized the letter writing bee and had all the supplies necessary for the community to write letters to advocate for electric trains instead of diesel trains. Community Bicycle Network comes full circle
“
ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The Community Bicycle Network (CBN) has seen many evolutions during its 20-year history and, according to board director Adrian Currie, their latest will bring them back to where they began. The CBN was started in 1993 as a collection of do-ityourself bike shops that came together to share resources. They grew to develop programming, workshops, bike repairs and the popular bike share rental program. They had setbacks, including a near closure in 2007 and more recently the sale of the building they call home at 761 Queen St. W. Now, after 20 years of offering and incubating sustainable transportation programs in downtown Toronto, the Community Bike Network is heading back to the “do-ityourself” days, Currie said. “That is how we want to position ourselves in the market right now,” Currie said. “Emphasizing the ‘Community’ in Community Bicycle Network.” “Member-worker” and doit-yourself centres are coming back on trend in urban centres like downtown Toronto and that is where the CBN is taking their programming. “We like to have working members,” Adrian explained, adding the idea is to have members take some workshops in safety and mainte-

nance and then assist in the shop helping customers. A membership to CBN is $20 a year and offers discounts on parts, repairs and workshops. Members can rent a bike repair stand and have the assistance of the mechanic for a small, per minute, fee. “So instead of paying $50 a bike to have something repaired, you can pay $25 and do it yourself,” Currie said. CBN’s mission is to be the leading provider of bicycle workshop and event programming in Toronto with
the city’s best-equipped tool shop for professional and do-it-yourself bike repairs, rentals and recycling. Summer Workshops They continue to sell new and used parts at an affordable price and their summer Bike Mechanic Workshops began yesterday. “We are getting into selling used bikes because we find people want to buy a $150 to $200 bike instead of a new one for $500 or $600,” Currie said.
CBN kicked off its 20th anniversary celebrations with an open house May 2. “We wanted to do an open house to let people know we are still here because a lot of people thought we moved out,” he said. The building CBN is currently in has been sold so they are looking for a new space. The board was able to sign a lease extension agreement until June 30 and then they hope to rent month-to-month until the late fall. They have a few spaces in mind, but the biggest thing now is to
get through the bike season at their Queen Street West location. “We don’t want to move in the middle of the summer because that kills the season and all our customers,” he said. At the open house, Currie said they also wanted to introduce Jerry Lee Miller, the new mechanic at CBN, to the community and kick off the new membership program. They wanted to highlight all the programming and events they have planned for the summer. CBN is going to be working with the popular Art Spin series this summer, a multidisciplinary art crawl-style bicycle tour of galleries, art performances, site-specific installations and visits to artists’ studios throughout various downtown Toronto neighbourhoods. They are also working with the Tune Your Ride Collective to jointly present the 2013 Bicycle Music Festival scheduled for Sept. 7 at Trinity Bellwoods Park and additional venues. New for this summer, Heritage Toronto will be offering bike tours, similar to the
walks they host. Sally Gibson, author of More Than An Island, will guide bikers on a leisurely ride around the Toronto Islands, all the while learning about the heritage. CBN will be marshalling this tour, meaning they will have a CBN member at the front and rear of the pack of bikers to ensure no one gets separated from the group. The island tour is scheduled for June 9 at 2 p.m. Register at http://heritagetoronto.org The CBN will organize the Toronto Vintage Bicycle Show for a second year, tentatively scheduled for July 28. Also on the horizon, Currie said CBN plans to throw a big birthday party at their Queen Street West space during bike month in June. They are also planning a screening of the film Tales of a Yellow Bike, which is about bike sharing and CBN in 2007, a time when the network was going through some difficulties. As a registered non-profit corporation, the CBN is managed by a volunteer board of directors and is looking for new members. They currently have five and ideally they would like 12. In particular they are looking for people with experience in business planning, web development, fundraising, marketing and social media, among other skills.

Bike advocate wants mayor to ride down ‘death alley’ JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com After being struck by vehicles three times while biking in Toronto, Little Italy resident Candice Anderson is offering up a challenge to Mayor Rob Ford. Anderson is hoping to collect 1,000 signatures, which she will present to Ford in challenging him to take a leisurely bike ride through downtown Toronto’s hectic streets. The avid cyclist is looking for the mayor to accompany
her on a ride down University Avenue from Queen’s Park to Nathan Phillips Square, a short, downhill trek. “I call University Avenue ‘death alley’ because it’s just insane,” she said. “It’s a typical north-south route where there aren’t bike lanes.” Anderson has been in a collision when a passenger opened a car door on University Avenue, was struck from behind on another occasion and had her bike pinned between a pole and a truck that was backing up.
“
When I got doored, it was scary... – Candice Anderson
“I’ve been lucky that I haven’t been seriously hurt,” she said. “When I got doored, it was scary because the top of the door aligned directly so the pointy part of the door is right at heart level.” Anderson was prompted to action given Ford’s carfriendly stance. She noted the city already has a dearth of bike lanes and removing
more would be detrimental to the city’s fabric. “There are 900,000 cyclists in the city and the mayor has to support them,” she said. She knows the frustration felt by motorists as she is a member of a car-sharing company. She also takes the TTC and walks to get around the city, but biking remains her preferred form of transportation despite the inherent dangers. “You get out in the nice weather, get some exercise – it’s much better than being
stuck in traffic,” she said. While Anderson has yet to reach her target of 1,000 signatures – she passed 700 on May 6 – she is optimistic she will attain her goal and is hopeful Ford will take on the challenge once a large number of Torontonians urge him to hop on a bike. She is heartened by comments the mayor made in 2009 during city discussions over the Jarvis Street streetscape improvements. While he referred to cyclists as a “pain in the ass,” he also acknowledged if he
lived downtown, he would “be with the cyclists.” “I believe he’s a hands-on guy, so I think if he experiences what it’s like (to bike downtown) it might change his mind about bike lanes,” Anderson said. The cycling advocate would also like to see the mayor rent a Bixi bike for the ride to reinforce the importance of the bike rental service in the community. Where are city’s worst roads?

T
he Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is inviting road users again to name the province’s worst roads in its annual campaign launched this month. We want to hear from you too – which road in your neighbourhood deserves being named the worst? It can be a stretch of road strewn with potholes as Dufferin Street is known to have – and not surprisingly received the people’s choice award as being the worst in the province in last year’s CAA campaign. Maybe it’s poorly marked lanes or a bottleneck that constantly results in slow and excess traffic. Community input is important to help prioritize road our view construction work especially in the city where day-to-day driving takes a major toll on the road Email us with infrastructure. worst road The country’s largest auto club suggested the provincial govern- suggestions ment establish a dedicated fund for road work to be paid through provincial gas tax revenues. The province currently reaps $2.3 billion annually through its excise tax, stated CAA spokesperson Faye Lyons. More will be necessary for the continual upkeep of roads to help lessen gridlock and subsequently improve economic productivity. We encourage all residents to provide feedback on how to tackle this issue. Several ideas are already out there that warrant further discussion such as Premier Kathleen Wynne’s recent announcement during the provincial budget this past week that new tolls to use high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes could raise money for transit construction. Metrolinx has also recently recommended revenue tools for transit infrastructure improvement such as introducing parking space levies and a dedicated portion of sales tax on consumer goods, which will be debated by Toronto council later this month. In the meantime, the money that is already earmarked for road improvement work should be spent on areas of the city that need it the most. Let us know which roads in your neighbourhood are seemingly neglected and need more attention by emailing us at letters@insidetoronto.com To learn more about the CAA campaign, visit www. caaworstroads.com and make your selection for the province’s worst road. Results are expected to be revealed next month.

City needs to look at tourist-friendly projects In little over a week, Toronto council will finally get a chance to make the call on a downtown casino. It’s a good bet council won’t be voting yes to a casino in the core of the city. Opposition is not unanimous, but decisive, and it seems unlikely the provincial government will sweeten the pot of Toronto’s hosting fee to sway enough to make a difference. And so, no casino, at least not downtown. The debate, once that final vote happens, will be over. Or will it? It may be true that Toronto doesn’t need or want a casino, but that’s not to say Toronto doesn’t need, or really want, more infrastructure to promote tourism and jobs and investments. Currently, the city’s core is developing effectively as a mass of tall condominium towers filled with tiny apartments. In the midst of those, Toronto does have assets: museums and galleries and sports venues and even a certain amount of convention space. But if the city wants to
david nickle the city encourage visitors beyond the parents of 20-something condo dwellers in Liberty Village, it’s got to do something. Once the casino is out of the way, it would behoove our leadership to start thinking about that. As City Manager Joe Pennachetti noted in his report outlining the benefits of a casino, Toronto needs more convention and trade show space near the downtown if it’s to be competitive with other destinations. A casino, Pennachetti said, would be an easy way to kickstart that development. That sounds like a mission statement. Council should, if they reject that casino plan, start looking at other ways to redevelop downtown properties in such a way as to draw visitors. Building a giant new convention centre with nothing but property tax and
municipal debt might not be a good idea. But finding ways to create incentives for that sort of development would be a good use of, say, the city’s economic development committee’s time. Toronto could look at how well it promotes its existing convention space and see if there’s a way to maximize it. It could look at its public spaces, and see if there’s anything that can be done to improve them beyond making them welcoming, and making them mesmerizing. In the past, Toronto’s done well for tourism fueled by a relatively open border, a low Canadian dollar and a thriving theatre scene. The dollar’s too high, border crossing is a pain and the theatre scene isn’t what it used to be. A casino wouldn’t, by itself, have made up for all that. A concerted, positive effort based on consensus, investment and genuine civic pride, though... that might be just the thing.

Water belongs to everyone Regarding the Boulevard’s Club expansion meeting. The Boulevard Club property is nested within the city’s Western Waterfront property, the city, the province, the country, the continent, and most importantly, the bio-region of the Great Lakes. Ironically, these waters are coveted by all and yet protected by few. Economic growth is slowly killing this global treasure and we’ve been watching it happen in our lifetime. The lakes give us beauty, opportunity and life itself. How can we rediscover our reverence for them and our duty to defend them? No matter which club you belong to, the waterfront is only as important as the water. Paul Baines

Letter writing campaign hopes to win the diesel train war >>>from page 1 will operate on a 25-kilometre rail route. Twenty-two kilometres of the route will share Metrolinx’s Kitchener GO rail corridor, formerly the Georgetown corridor. It’s slated for completion in time for the Pan/Parapan American Games in 2015. Metrolinx has purchased diesel trains for the link, but the line can be converted to electric trains, which it says will happen in the future. The letters described how diesel trains fail on all counts: health, environment, economic, transit and social justice. The letters, 106 in total, were written by the community and addressed to the leaders of all provincial political parties. “This really is a non-partisan issue,” said Doug Bennet, chair of the Wabash Building Society and the director of the Clean Train Coalition. “We don’t know what is going to happen in provincial politics in the next few

months so we want to make sure everyone hears the message.” Our future The letter writing bee was organized to get letters from all kinds of residents, in particular children, Bennet said. There are 18,000 students from 52 Toronto District School Board schools within 1.2 kilometre on either side of the proposed rail line. “We wanted to get children’s voices because they are so effective,” he said, adding in an era where society seems to be saddling future generations with debt, electric trains are one thing that
would be cheaper to run in the future. There have been a number of community lead initiatives including protests, rallies, marches to Queens Park and concerts. But Bennet said it’s important to continue to fight for electric trains on the air rail link. “We don’t want to let up,” Bennet said. “We want to keep the Liberal feet to the diesel fire.” The letters will be delivered to Queen’s Park by Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo. DiNovo said advocates for electric trains have won battles along the way. They just haven’t won the war. When the fight started 12 years ago, DiNovo said advocates were focused on getting electric trains. The government has said they will run electric trains on the line, but the battle isn’t over as to when that will happen. “There is still no reason we couldn’t go electric first,” DiNovo said.

Miguel Kumar, 9, holds up a photo of an electric train he drew, which will be delivered, along with a letter, to provincial officials calling on them to use electric trains on the planned air-rail link, now called UP Express.
However, she added she is confident they will win the fight to get electric trains as opposed to diesel. “It is work like this that has gotten us to this point,” DiNovo said. “Everything helps, every letter, every time I read a petition. The day before the letter writing bee there was a meeting of representatives from all of the different com-
munity groups involved in the Metrolinx Noise Wall Community Advisory Committees. Independent study Bennet explained the various groups have been meeting separately with Metrolinx and they wanted to get together to compare notes. Although the message from
Metrolinx seems to be consistent, Bennet said the group has growing concerns around a sound study being done in relation to the trains. Bennet said the various community groups are considering doing an independent sound study. Visit www.cancertrain.ca to look at the concerns about diesel trains and possible solutions.

Parkdale Collegiate welcomes back Cotter and three fellow alumni Show is a fundraiser to replenish school’s scholarship fund ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com From dates gone wrong to wild high school parties, award winning comedian Simon B. Cotter has tailored a special routine about growing up in Parkdale for an upcoming fundraiser. Pa r k d a l e C o l l e g i a t e Institute Alumni Association is gearing up for next year’s 125th anniversary celebrations (May 2 to 4, 2014) with a comedy show, Let Laughter Grow From More to More, at Hugh’s Room Thursday, May 9 at 8 p.m. The event, featuring four comedians including Cotter, is a fundraiser to replenish the school’s scholarship fund. Cotter grew up in Parkdale, the son of an Anglican minister, and attended Parkdale C.I. in the late 1970s. He was president of student council, captain of the football team and played in the band.
“High school was supposed to be this awkward time.” Cotter said. “But I have great memories. I loved my time there.” Parkdale was a rougher neighbourhood back when Cotter was growing up, but he said the school was a safe haven. “It was still run like a 1950s high school with spirit days, it had high academic standards, and all the teachers knew your name,” Cotter said. “It was a real meritocracy, they really drove you to succeed.” lives in High Park Cotter, who lives in High Park, said that’s still the case today, and he knows since his daughter is now a student at Parkdale C.I. in the International Baccalaureate Programme. The program doesn’t just focus on academics, but also things like community
involvement and sports, he said. “It is a magical place to go to school,” Cotter said. Cotter said he is looking forward to seeing some of his old teachers and classmates at the show, but added you won’t have had to have grown up in Parkdale or attended Parkdale C.I. to enjoy the jokes. He has some bits about High Park and about being a parent. “I am going to talk about how easy our kids have it compared to how we had it and rail against my kids for a bit,” Cotter said. “Like the other day, my son said get a life and I thought if I said that to my dad I wouldn’t have a life.” Cotter has performed at the Just For Laughs Festival and appeared on CBC’s Comics! as well as CTV/The Comedy Network’s Comedy Now!. Also performing at Let Laughter Grow From More to More is fellow Parkdale C.I.

CONTACT festival launches at MOCCA
Toronto Comic Arts Festival
ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com
Month-long photography festival meant to inspire community
The world’s largest photography festival, CONTACT, officially kicked off May 1 at The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) in West Queen West. CONTACT started out small, but 17 years later has grown to include Canadian and international artists and photographers exhibiting at more than 175 venues throughout Toronto. The festival features 10 primary exhibitions, nine public installations and 32 featured exhibitions, with more than 1,000 artists exhibiting their work at 134 Open Exhibitions across the city. CONTACT Photography Festival executive director Darcy Killeen said the goal of the festival is to transform Toronto during the month of May and inspire community. “It invigorates the city and provides a forum for emerging and established artists to
interact with the community,” Killeen said. The CONTACT 2013 theme is Field of Vision and situates photography as an expansion of sight, where the camera’s field of view extends the eye’s field of vision. “Photographs offer us a privileged view of what we might not otherwise see,” said Bonnie Rubenstein, artistic director of CONTACT. A few of the artists were on hand to speak about their work, including famed Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist Sebastião Salgado. His exhibition Genesis, showing at the Royal Ontario Museum until Sept. 2, was eight years in the making. The more than 200 black and white images capture the majesty of regions not yet touched by the impact of globalization and depict unspoiled landscapes, boundless wildlife, and human
Celebrate the art of comics during The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF). Presented by Toronto Public Library and The Beguiling Books & Art, the week-long celebration of comics, graphic novels and their creators culminates in a two-day exhibition and vendor fair, May 11 and 12, featuring hundreds of comic creators from around the world at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St. Hours for the exhibit and fair are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. This year the festival celebrates 10 years of promoting the best of Canada’s comic book and graphic novel authors. The main events, which take place at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St., and the surrounding neighbourhood, are free, but some special events may require tickets. communities still following traditional ways of living. Two of the festival’s 10 primary exhibitions can be seen at MOCCA until June 2: • Archive of Modern Conflict: Collected Shadows; • and Michael Snow: The Viewing of Six New Works. As well, the CONTACT public installation in MOCCA’s courtyard this year is a largescale mural by Tel Aviv-based artist IIit Azoulay. David Liss, artistic director and curator MOCCA, said the CONTACT exhibitions are the gallery’s most attended of the year.

Chiropractor to work in concert with Lula’s ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The community benefits from artists – the music
they make and the art they create. And now chiropractor Jan Wu has teamed up with Lula Music and Arts Centre on
Dundas Street West to give something back to artists – health care. Lu l a Mu s i c a n d A r t s Centre has partnered with
Dr. Jan Wu of Elumena Health Clinics to launch a pilot project to take health care right to where the music happens. Not only will health care practitioners be able to help patients within a clinic at Lula, but they will also be able to observe artists dancing or playing music as they normally would. Ergonomics
“ We c a n l o o k a t t h e ergonomics and how their playing postures effect the particular pains they are having,” said Wu, a former performer and musician. Wu explained in the world of performing arts, a subculture of ignoring health care exists. Artists are often expected to perform through pain, a behaviour that can have dangerous, long-term implications. B:10.375” Focused on muscle joint T:10.375” and bone issues, the clinic S:10.375”
“
Wu said, explaining they offer numerous services to help. Donations made by Wu and the Lula Music and Arts Centre have made it possible to move ahead with this project and provide highly subsidized fees for qualified artists.
We can look at the ergonomics and how their playing postures effect the particular pains they are having. – Dr. Jan Wu
will aid artists with existing ailments as well as injury prevention and health promotion to improve lifestyle and prolong careers in the arts. “One of our big focuses is to be able to draw attention to the health issues effecting performing artists,” Wu said.
Reduction in costs Wu said patients will see a 50 to 60 per cent reduction in costs, making a typical chiropractic or physiotherapy visit cost only $20 to $30. The pilot project is slated to wrap up at the end of the summer. The clinic is now booking appointments for May 27 when it officially opens. Appointments will be available Mondays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Multidisciplinary Wu said there are opportunities for a multidisciplinary approach to health as he is affiliated with reiki professionals, nutrition experts and lifestyle councillors. “Smoking and alcohol can be a big part of the culture,”

A funny thing happens when you tell kids they matter. They believe you. An alarming 40,000 kids drop out of high school every year. Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada are committed to changing that. They provide a safe and supportive place where kids can develop confidence and life skills. They offer programs like Rogers Raising the Grade to help kids with their studies. The Club is a place where kids can drop in, so they’re less likely to drop out. TM

transit pledges to expand GO service wProvince The provincial government wants to beef up GO Transit service over the next decade. This year’s budget, delivered on May 2 by the Liberal minority government of Premier Kathleen Wynne, lists as 10-year priorities extending regional transit into “underserviced” areas, increasing rush hour service and working towards all-day GO train and bus service. For 2013, the Liberals want to boost GO’s service capacity 20 per cent, increase ridership by 50,000, add 16,000 parking spaces and spend on infrastructure upgrades. No dollar amounts are given. Part of The Big Move transportation plan, the GO expansion will cost $4.9 billion (in 2014 dollars) to complete. City to decide on onemetre passing rule City council is to consider this week the creation of a onemetre passing distance rule that would protect cyclists from overzealous drivers. Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Tam’s motion calls for the city to require drivers to leave a one-metre distance when passing cyclists. The measure is in line with recent recommendations made by the province’s chief coroner on traffic safety. If approved the city would become the first jurisdiction to adopt the one-metre passing rule ahead of even the province which has yet to update the Highway Traffic Act. Council is to debate the issue at its meeting this week. Patrick station to become art gallery wSt.

The installation is part of the CONTACT photography festival. The austere and eerie

The Toronto Financial District BIA wants public feedback on prospective designs for street pole “wraps.” The wrapping will protect street poles along Bay Street from graffiti and adhesives, says the BIA, which was formed in 2011. It’s asking the public to choose one of two patterns at its website www.torontofinancialdistrict.com. Respondents can also provide feedback on improving the designs. The new-look street poles are part of overall improvements to the area, including new banners, street furniture and sidewalk repairs, intended to give Bay Street a uniform look. CAA wants residents to weigh in on the province’s worst roads Finch Avenue West among last year’s ‘winners’ RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The country’s largest auto club wants dedicated gas tax revenue to pay for the maintenance and upkeep of Ontario’s crumbling road infrastructure. The Canadian Automobile Association, which launched its annual campaign to locate the worst roads in the province Wednesday morning at Queen’s Park, wants the Liberal government to establish a dedicated fund for road work to be paid through provincial gas tax revenues. In a press release, CAA spokesperson Faye Lyons said the province reaps $2.3 billion annually through its excise tax, which should be re-invested in
