DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com An expansion of casino gambling anywhere in Toronto is no longer in the cards, after council voted to reject both a downtown casino and expansion of the Woodbine Racetrack into a full-blown casino in north Etobicoke. Council made the decision after a relatively swift debate at a special meeting Tuesday. M a y o r R o b Fo r d h a d attempted to cancel the meeting late last week, declaring a downtown casino dead, but 24 councillors pushed to hold the meeting anyway, to settle the matter. Ford moved a motion that would cancel the downtown casino, but keep the ball rolling on letting the province establish a second casino at the Woodbine Racetrack. Council rejected Ford’s motion, with a vote of 31-13, instead supporting TrinitySpadina Councillor Mike Layton’s motions that would reject a new casino downtown, and oppose gaming expansion in the C2 zone where the Woodbine Racetrack is located. That last vote carried by a narrower margin – 24-20. Ni c k E a v e s, Pre s i d e n t a n d C E O o f Wo o d b i n e Entertainment, said the vote was disappointing.

Stage 2 of West TO Railpath begins with EA study ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Stage 1 of the West Toronto Railpath took 10 years to complete and opened in 2009, but the dream has remained that a second phase would see the path head south all the way to the waterfront. Designed by Scott Torrance Landscape Architect Inc. in con-
junction with Brown and Storey Architects, construction of the first stage of the West Toronto Railpath began in 2008 and was completed in 2009. The award-winning path stretches from Cariboo Avenue north of Dupont down to Dundas Street West. Now, the city is making moves to see a second half of the path completed, which would take it
further south on the east side of the corridor through Parkdale and connect with new cycling infrastructure, including the pedestrian bridge, at Strachan Avenue, and then to the waterfront. A Fe a s i b i l i t y St u d y / Environmental Assessment (EA) Study has been commissioned by the city to specifically look at building Stage 2 and will report

later in the fall. Daniel Egan, manager of cycling infrastructure and programs for the city, said the project has always been on the city’s radar, but because construction on the path wasn’t slated to happen in the corridor until at least 2015, the EA was always scheduled to happen around this time. >>>award, page 5

Even today, walking onto the Toronto Carpet Factory lot, it is as if you step back in time. One full city block in size, the Toronto Carpet Factory in Liberty Village is a turn-of-the-century complex featuring several buildings clustered around internal courtyards and laneways. The interior features high ceilings, exposed brick and beams and enormous windows and it will all be on view to the public as part of the city’s annual Doors Open Toronto event. This year’s Doors Open theme, “Creators, Makers and Innovators”, will feature many older buildings that have been redesigned, re-invented and re-purposed into modern 21st-century spaces. Jane Siklos with York Heritage Properties, which has owned the Toronto Carpet Factory buildings since 1995, said when they heard the
theme they saw the building as a perfect fit and jumped on board. The Toronto Carpet Factory, 67 Mowat Ave, is a historically listed facility that has been re-birthed into a centre of creativity, home to more than 125 innovative businesses in the fields of interior design, marketing, entertainment, fashion and public relations. “L i b e r t y V i l l a g e h a s changed dramatically and with it has come a lot of creative enterprises – it has just been a magnet,” Siklos said. To r o n t o C a r p e t Manufacturing Company, Limited, was established by F. Barry Hayes in Toronto in 1891. In 1899, the company moved out of its space at Jarvis and The Esplanade into its impressive new factory in Toronto’s west end. By the end of the First World War, the factory occupied one full city block and employed more than 1,000 people. It ceased operating as a carpet manufacturing com-

pany in 1976 and then for 20 years it had a variety of tenants. “When we bought it in 1995 probably one-third of it was sitting in disrepair,” she said. The building was mended and now houses 125 different businesses in the building, everything from graphic artists to lawyers, accountants,
marketing, communications and even a custom wallpaper company. “The owner’s philosophy has been to retain as much of the original building as we possibly can,” she said. “We never touch the floors or the beams or anything like that.” The Toronto Carpet Factory participated in Doors Open
a number of years ago and Siklos said they are looking forward to doing it again. Tours will take onlookers through the buildings and into some of the tenant suites. “We wanted to give an example of some of the creative businesses located here,” Siklos said. The benefit of participating in Doors Open to York Properties is that it helps increase their profile and is also a way for them to give back to the community, but it isn’t seen as a means to attract future tenants. “We are in the enviable position, a lot of the time, of being quite full, the building is popular, a lot of these businesses have synergies so they like to be located together,” she said. “It is just a great community initiative to be involved in.”

t will be all hands on deck when the Toronto police Marine Unit invites the public to come in and check out its fleet as part of Doors Open Toronto. The Marine Unit boasts 57 personnel members who are responsible for an area spanning roughly 460 square miles of Lake Ontario water stretching from the Etobicoke Creek to the Rouge River. Its catchment area includes the Toronto Islands and Billy Bishop Airport, and its officers are often called into the city to conduct water rescues and carry out other marine police duties along the city’s many waterways. “We’re basically responsible for anything that happens on or near the water in the city or in a large area on Lake Ontario,” said Const. Scott Cornett. The Doors Open tour will include a walk through the Marine Unit’s boathouse where the public can check out the fleet.

The Toronto Police Marine Unit will give the public a behind the scenes look at its operations as part of this weekend’s Doors Open Toronto.
The Marine Unit boasts an array of boats, including a 15-tonne vessel that can serve as a mobile command unit, four rigid hull inflatable boats for quick responses and its piece de resistance, a circa 1939 mahogany boat used predominantly to transport VIPs. “It’s probably the oldest piece of police equipment still being used in North America and it was made for Lake Ontario with a deep V hull that slices through the waves,” Cornett said.
“If we continue to maintain this boat, it will outlast any of our other boats down here.” The fleet also includes a rough water boat that will self-correct, allowing it to remain upright in even the worst conditions. The selection of boats allow the Marine Unit to carry out all manner of aquatic policing duties from search and rescue operations to transporting people to or from the Toronto Islands in case of emergency to towing and salvage
operations. “We also have a 10-man dive team that can use either SCUBA or surfacesupplied air if we need to get down into the lake,” Cornett said. While the Marine Unit does not often deal with violent crimes, the violent lake waters and often brutal conditions in Lake Ontario make their job a unique challenge. “I’ve been out in 18-foot seas and (the officers) have to learn to operate in the conditions they’re faced with,” Cornett said. He noted that dangerous water is often overlooked as a threat, adding the Canadian Navy lost more ships to bad weather in the Second World War than in any single battle. While Lake Ontario is not as treacherous as the open sea, officers in the Marine Unit have to deal with their share of terrible weather conditions. “We’ve had people transfer out of here because they can’t handle rough water or they can’t handle seeing their first bad drowning, but
it’s the same as any other unit, where people transfer out after seeing a bad homicide.” The Marine Unit keeps track of goings-on on the water through use of regular radio channels and a special emergency distress channel, as well as security cameras positioned throughout the waterfront. As the third-largest Marine Unit in North America, it must deal with its fair share of drownings. “The biggest killer in Lake Ontario is the cold water,” Cornett said. “You get the veteran boaters out there who know what they’re doing but a lot of people just aren’t prepared for any situation.” The Toronto police Marine Unit will welcome the public into its facility at 259 Queens Quay W. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26. Several other buildings in Toronto Harbour will also be open to the public.

The 14th annual Doors Open Toronto features 150 architecturally, historically, culturally and socially significant buildings across the city on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26. Since its inception in 2000, Doors Open Toronto has attracted more than two million visits to nearly 600 unique locations across the city. New additions this year include: • The Munk School for Global Affairs (1 Devonshire Pl. and 315 Bloor St. W.), previously a historic observatory and meteorological observation centre, now houses a global platform of innovative research. http://munkschool. utoronto.ca • The Riverdale Hub (1326 Gerrard St. E.) is a grassroots community-based social enterprise. Through renovation and retrofitting, this once-crumbling, century-old building became the vibrant, cutting-edge, 90 per cent energy efficient Riverdale Hub. www.riverdalehub.ca • Daniels Spectrum (585 Dundas St E.) is a new cultural landmark in the heart of the Regent Park Revitalization. Since opening in September 2012, this colourful new facility has become a destination for culturally diverse performances, celebrations and community and public events. www.regentparkarts. ca • The Harris Institute (118 Sherbourne St.) is an industrial brick building that dates back to the early 1900s when it was originally a box manufacturing plant. Repurposed in the late 1970s as The Door Store and Turn of the Century Lighting, it was converted into a worldclass innovative recording studio and music education and production space in 1995. www.harrisinstitute. com

Pandas can help Toronto feel good
Write us
T
hey’re big, they’re cute and they could be two of the greatest things to happen to our city in decades. They are Da Mao and Er Shun, the two giant pandas on loan from China who are now on display at the Toronto Zoo in northeast Scarborough for the next five years. In a word, they are ambassadors. Ambassadors from China. They can serve as ambassadors to bring your family and friends from afar to Toronto. Beyond the economic benefits of increased tourism that the pandas will bring, we can also use them as a chance to start feeling good about ourselves and our city. We certainly could use that opportunity given the devastating first-round NHL playoff loss the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered at the hands of the other bears – the Boston Bruins. There has our view been some debate as to whether giant pandas are actually of the bear family, however, genetic testIncrease in ing indicates they are – so these tourism and particular bruins owe us. Local residents and tourists goodwill alike will have lots of opportunities to see Da Mao and Er Shun in the special Giant Panda Experience exhibit built just for them. It officially opened to the public on Saturday. Visitors can view the exhibit, which includes an interpretative centre, educational opportunities and giant-panda themed exhibits. Of course, the stars of the show will be the pandas themselves, and they seemed fine during the VIP launch of the exhibit late last week - munching on bamboo and looking cute as can be. The first time the Toronto Zoo hosted a panda exhibit was back in 1985 when our panda guests were Qing Qing and Quan Quan. They only stayed three months that time and the zoo broke all previous attendance records during their visit. The world is a different place now, and so is Canada’s relationship with China, but what hasn’t changed in 25 years is the fact that our city and our zoo are now the focal point of national and international attention when it comes to giant pandas. It opens doors for everyone in the city to welcome family and friends, be they from Oakville or the other side of the world, to come and see the pandas. And once our guests have arrived, we can also show them some of the other great things Toronto has to offer. For more on the pandas go to our website at www. insidetoronto.com and visit the Hot Topics section.

Time for Ford Nation to call it quits The trouble with writing a weekly column that appears on Thursday is that when a mayor finds himself in allegedly hideous and frankly filthy trouble on the previous Friday, it’s tough to find something new to say. So it is with Mayor Rob Ford, and revelation last Friday of the cellphone video that according to two respected journalists at the Toronto Star alleges to show our mayor smoking crack cocaine. Earlier in the cycle, I might have joined the chorus of every other columnist working in Toronto media, and said it was time for the mayor to resign. I’ll take a slightly different tack, and speak directly to Ford Nation. It might be time, Ford Nation, to call it quits. Regardless of what happens with the video, it has come time to face some facts. The mayor, when you elected him, came with a
david nickle the city certain amount of baggage including a 1999 impaired driving conviction in Florida. There was a certain amount of baggage that you were willing to forgive, because you are a forgiving bunch. Some commentators say, in fact, that Rob Ford’s foibles have been a part of his charm to Ford Nation: that it shows him to be a regular guy, a guy that sometimes screws up, and not one of the elites. It is time, Ford Nation, to give up on forgiveness – at least inasmuch as that forgiveness translates to continued fealty, and worse, identification. Because Rob Ford is not like you. potential conflicts-ofinterest in your job. You don’t, as a rule, embarrass yourselves, your family and your community. You are stand-up people, and you don’t need to stand up for this. In giving up on forgiving our mayor, you need not give up on the agenda he ran on. There are other good fiscally conservative politicians in the wings – many of whom have assisted in our mayor’s fulfillment of his agenda this term. In 2014, you will likely have the opportunity to support one them to continue that agenda. Call this, Ford Nation, your moment of clarity.

One transit authority needed said reader As a Provincial agency, Metrolinx gets its funding from the province and thus is not impartial to the funding decisions that must and can only be decided by the province. Unfortunately for the past 40 years, all political parties and their incumbant politicians from all three levels of government have mismanaged and failed our cities when it comes to infrastructure and funding. The amalgamation of all the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area area public transit authorities, especially the TTC, and GO, TTC Halton, Peel, York and Durham into one regional transit authority is a must. Award-winning path has evolved organically into spaces for the community >>>from page 1 The EA will look at how the city can connect the West Toronto Railpath with the proposed Fort York Pedestrian Bridge, just east of Strachan Avenue, Egan said. “I think we have a pretty good idea that we can get it to Queen Street,” Egan said. “Just north of Queen Street is where it starts to get really challenging.” The city is looking at all of the development happening along the corridor and seeing where they can secure land. South of Queen, there are some obstacles including buildings and private land, but Egan said they are looking at the options. Rail line capacity expansion projects by Metrolinx could potentially conflict with Stage 2, but Egan said the study will look at securing as much land as possible for the path. There has been a meeting with stakeholders, includ-
ing representatives from Metrolinx, Friends of West Toronto Railpath, Cycle TO, West Queen West BIA, Parkdale BIA and City of Toronto staff, to explore key issues and get input on developing the continuous multi-use trail, Egan said. “We wanted to make sure any of the stakeholders that might have some issues that we weren’t aware of, we could have them on record and address them through the planning and design stages,” Egan said. There will be a public meeting in June and another in the fall. Friends of West Toronto Railpath, a communitybased working group, have been working with the city departments, councillors and Metrolinx to help make Railpath Stage 2 a reality. Scott Dobson, who lives in the Junction Triangle, is a longtime member of the Friends of
West Toronto Railpath. “I believe the rail path and routes like it create an important way for communities to become interconnected,” Dobson said. “People originally thought that Railpath was going to be a linear green commuter park and essentially it was for people to get from A to B.” Thanks to the awardwinning work of the designer Scott Torrance and the landscape architect different kinds of users have started taking advantage of the park at different times of the day and in ways that weren’t envisioned when it was initially proposed, Dobson said. There are the commuters, as expected, but there are also daycare providers walking with kids, schoolchildren playing, seniors going for a walk and business people and couriers using it for deliveries on bikes. In the areas where dead-end streets meet the rail
path, Torrance designed little enclaves, which have become little meeting areas for people working in the area and they have become spaces for community events. “At Wallace (Avenue) we have had musical events, political rallies, protests, movies nights and we have also had art instillations,” Dobson said. “So there are all these other uses that we hadn’t really thought about at the time, but have organically evolved.” Ideally, the Friends of Railpath would like to find a way to build a bridge to connect Sorauren Park to the Railpath. “We have a once-in-alifetime opportunity to build a bridge between two communities that have not been connected for more than 150 years because of the railway,” Dobson said. “With think a bridge like this could be an incredible mobility legacy project.”

One in three Canadian kids are left on the side of the rink In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate, but she didn’t think it would be possible coming from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance. A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal – to one-day join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” says Marlee Stein.
“With all the lessons I have taken, I hope it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.” “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives,” says Johnny Misley, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can simply participate, and ultimately pusue their dreams.” Kids who are able to participate in organized sport and recreation,
outside school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased self esteem, greater self confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. Despite the financial hardships many Canadian families face, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped 570,000 (and counting) children like Marlee participate in the sport of their choice. Help kids from your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s and Canadian Tire Gas+ stores as well as Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with 100 per cent of all donations going to help kids play. The May campaign will be celebrated on Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 25, with fun activities taking place at participating Canadian Tire Retail stores across the country, including charity barbeque’s or GoClean waterless car washes. A mural to Holly Jones in Charles G. Williams Park, at Wabash and Sorauren avenues.
Remembering Holly Jones: 10 years later
LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Over a sunny and warm Victoria Day long weekend, Holly Jones’ family and friends gathered in Charles G. Williams Park at Sorauren and Wabash avenues, to help artist Art Child touch up the memorial mural that depicts the 10-year-old girl’s smiling face. Sorauren Park and its surrounding green spaces hold a special place in Holly’s mother, Maria Jones’ heart. “Our kids grew up in that area. They have all played there at the Sorauren Park, daily, for many years,” Jones told The Villager. “Sorauren has wonderful memories with our kids there.” A decade has passed since Holly, an energetic and happy-go-lucky child, was abducted after walking a friend home in the Perth Avenue and Bloor Street West area in May of 2003. A month later, a 35-yearold software developer, who lived in the neighbourhood, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Pleading guilty, Holly’s killer received an automatic life sentence without a chance of parole for 25 years. “We are much stronger now, but we don’t forget,” said Jones. “We miss her so much every single day, but missing her isn’t the most painful part – I wish it was. It’s the fear and horror she suffered from the moment she was grabbed by the throat off the street.

We are much stronger now, but we don’t forget. We miss her so much, every single day... – Maria Jones
Knowing what she went through before her murder is the most heart-wrenching and painful feeling, it can’t be explained.” Jones struggles when she thinks of what her daughter was forced to endure. “I envision the bounce in her walk, while coming home that day, with a big inner smile and then all of a sudden, I see the horror in her face, feeling her fear and knowing she was praying for mommy and daddy to come save her,” said Jones. “Living with this thought is complete agony... It is a pain that no other parent should ever have to experience.” Jones credits the community for its continued love and support, particularly because Jones said she initially felt incredible guilt for allowing her daughter to walk the little girl home that day. “I honestly thought everyone was going to blame me and hate me as a parent. I felt I deserved it, but they showed us so much support, care and love,” said Jones. “By having all these people reach out to us made it feel like it will be the closest I will ever get to Holly.” Holly’s mural can be found
at 41 Wabash Ave., painted on the side of Addison’s Inc. Antique and Reproduction Plumbing Fixtures. Child, a family friend and neighbour, projected a photograph of Holly onto the wall and traced her face. “He’s really talented,” said Holly’s brother James JonesStonehouse, at the mural on Saturday, May 18. For 10 years, the mural has remained untouched by graffiti. Jones-Stonehouse was 16 when his sister passed away. The mural was painted within a month of her death. When Jones-Stonehouse first set eyes on the work of art, he was “blown away.” Holly’s cousin, Kayla Jones, “fell in love with it.” S h e a n d Ho l l y w e re close, the two would hang out during family dinners. In fact Kayla was at Holly’s house the night before Holly disappeared. “I told her, ‘be safe, I love you,’” Jones said. “I dream about her; I feel her around me.” Holly’s death has caused a pain so deep her mother says will never go away. “All we have left is to talk about her,” she said. “Now, 10 years later, I still would not be able to deal with this if it wasn’t for our family, our children especially. They keep us together knowing they share the same pain as we do.”

Bishop Marrocco students’ films to screen at Just Docs Festival LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Jeana McCabe, a Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School social justice documentary teacher, was ecstatic to find out some of her graduates are the recipients of a Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Next Wave Young Filmmakers Showcase Award. Amid the chaos of a fire drill at the school, Wednesday, May 1, McCabe excitedly spoke of the film Eden, the winning documentary short created by Claudia Palarmo, Connie Sobon and Suzie Reibeiro, about “looking for paradise in the midst of urban life,” she said. The about three-minute film was shot at Dundas West station and in High Park during the peak of Cherry Blossom season last year. McCabe had yet to share the good news with her former students, who are all currently at university. The religion arts teacher is busily preparing her latest classes of budding filmmakers for a screening of their films at the Revue Cinema as part of the Just Docs Film Festival Monday, May 27. The festival will feature the films of as many as eight Grade 10 finalists and five
Grade 12 finalists. The Grade 10 students have just completed rough copies of their social justice films that tackle such subjects as female bullying, new Canadian immigrants, the electric car, homelessness, genetically modified foods and animal cruelty, among others. McCabe’s class is the first opportunity the Grade 10 students would have had to use a video camera. “They’re just used to using their cellphones,” she said. “The Grade 10s have to be able to tell a story, to convincingly portray their social justice principle in their story.” McCabe is looking for films that offer “beautiful, well thought out images, with a beautifully composed score,” she said. “I want my Grade 10s to get out in the community to talk to people, to get outside their comfort zone, to educate and expose an unfair practice or issue and offer solutions on how we can make a change,” McCabe said. McCabe credits Toronto Catholic District School Board Supt. Jim Saraco and Bishop Marrocco principal Maria Pereira for their support. The religion arts program boasts state-of-the-art equipment, including cam-
eras and editing program. With a background in psychology – McCabe said she is intrigued by what make people tick – and communications, specializing in documentary, McCabe said, “I’ll never be able to teach with a textbook.” When she arr ived at Bishop Marrocco under f o r m e r p r i n c i p a l Ru s s Coleman, she told him, “You give me two cameras and I won’t spend any money on textbooks.” As the saying goes, “the rest, they say, is history.” The Art School at Marrocco is thriving and at capacity. McCabe’s Grade 10 students Justin Bicmong and John Ngo said they are enjoying the creative process of filmmaking. “It’s cool to talk to people and hear their stories,” said Bicmong, whose documentary short is about welcoming new Canadians to Toronto. “Some people are shy. That’s one of the issues, but once they know it’s for a good cause, they open up.” Anyone is welcome at the Just Docs Festival. The Just Docs Festival takes place Monday, May 27 at the Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Ave., starting at 12:30 p.m. For more details, visit www.justdocsfestival.com

Roncy Rocks returns for another year The ever popular celebration of local art, music and culture, returns for a fourth year to Roncesvalles Village on Saturday, June 15. As many as 19,000 people attend the annual Roncy Rocks event. “Every year, we’re surprised. It grows, it triples, it quadruples,” founder and local artist and Business Improvement Area (BIA) member Liz Szynkowski told The Villager. “We’ve got it out there on the air waves, on social media.” The festival boasts four stages of continuous music between the hours of 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. “It’s quite fun and it’s free,” Szynkowski said enthusiastically. “It’s just incredible.”
The neighbourhood boasts a lot of artists, including movie makers and sound technicians – “all kinds of art-based people,” said Szynkowski. The proprietor of Impact Photography wanted to give artists a “base,” where they would feel they belonged and so four years ago, approached the BIA, which was receptive to the idea for the festival. Organizers pulled it together in its inaugural year in three weeks. “The next year, it grew substantially. People come from other areas from across the province. The artists are talking about it. The BIA is one of our biggest sponsors – it’s put on and funded by the BIA.”
The festival will include a juried art show and sale with lots of art-related activities for the entire family. Participating artists will exhibit their work along Roncesvalles Avenue. Meanwhile, area merchants provide a sidewalk sale. The festival boasts kids art activities, art installations, interactive workshops and a Roncy’s Got Talent youth talent show. Organizers are currently seeking volunteers for site decorating, directing visitors, post event clean-up and more. Volunteers must be 16 of age or older. ~ Lisa Rainford

system lags wA Transit in service coverage recent study comparing Toronto and Chicago’s transit systems finds the American city is far superior when it comes to service coverage. The comparison study by the Martin Prosperity Institute, part of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, found the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) was far more likely than the TTC to have a tran-
sit connection within 500 metres – the equivalent of a 10-minute walk – of a regular city block. The comparison between the sister cities also found Chicago, which operates eight rapid transit lines, has far better downtown coverage enabling commuters from the outer suburbs to travel long distances without having to switch vehicles. Conversely, Toronto riders often require multiple transfers to get downtown.
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT While the study, which was posted on the Martin Prosperity Institute’s blog, finds both cities’ transit systems under-delivering on transit accessibility, it argues Toronto, though larger in population than Chicago, fails to connect the city as well as it should and needs urgent expansion.
