Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks will host a community consultation meeting to discuss the proposed development of the properties located at 422-430 Roncesvalles Ave. and 9 Howard Park Ave. on Monday. The proposed development is a mixed use, 10-storey residential building with 130 units, two levels of underground parking and retail at grade on Roncesvalles Avenue. The builder, project architect and planning consultant will be in attendance to make a presentation and respond to questions. City of Toronto planning and urban design staff will also be in attendance. The meeting, being held in advance of an application being filed by the developer, is scheduled to take place Nov. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Turner and Porter Chapel, 436 Roncesvalles Ave.
n Garbage Fees
Toronto’s budget committee has voted to end a small incentive for households to minimize the amount of garbage they put out each collection. The committee voted Monday to support a motion from Toronto’s budget chief Mike Del Grande to end the $2.84 rebate on the garbage rate for those homeowners who have the smallest of the grey bins the city gives out for recycling. Homeowners with the larger bins, however, will have their rates frozen - much to the chagrin of Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks. He unsuccessfully fought to have rates increased by 2.1 per cent in order to help the city improve its waste diversion rate, which at 50 per cent is still 20 points shy of the 70 per cent waste diversion target council has set for itself.

Kennedy joins Liberal leadership race LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Former MP and MPP for ParkdaleHi g h Pa r k G e ra rd Ke n n e d y announced his bid for the Ontario Liberal leadership Monday morning. Kennedy, Ontario’s minister of education from 2003 to 2006, said Premier Dalton McGuinty’s decision to step down creates an opportunity for change not just within the party, but for all Ontarians. “This is a great opportunity for
people in Ontario to have more say in government,” said Kennedy, whose firm, Enterprising for the Public Good, works with private companies and charitable organizations on innovative ways to improve services to the public. “I really am concerned about the lack of quality interaction with the public.” Kennedy called McGuinty’s resignation a “sacrifice” on the premier’s part because it forces a refocusing of the Liberal Party and of the provincial government.
“There is too much power in the leader’s office in all political parties,” said Kennedy, whose concern is “first and foremost giving Ontarians more say in the political process.” Kennedy will soon kick off his leadership campaign in London, Ont. and its surrounding communities. “I think politics is something everyone should be involved in and have access to. Let’s not just replace one person; let’s do it with a movement of people who want to change politics,” Kennedy said.
“Public service is a privilege. The political system can change. This is a real opportunity to do better.” According to Kennedy, both the party and the province need new approaches. He said he’d like to give the members of the Ontario Liberal Party more say – to call their leader to account, when need be. As one-time provincial education minister, Kennedy addressed the current atmosphere among teachers brought on by the Liberal government, particularly Bill 115, which >>>runner-up, page 10

Author at PARC reading series Nov. 19 Memoir from grandson of Connaught Lab founder delves into a family history of mental health issues ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com
I
t wasn’t until James FitzGerald was asked to participate in a new reading series at the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre (PARC) that he learned what the west-end drop in centre is all about. Award winning author and journalist FitzGerald, 62, has lived in Roncesvalles Village for the past three years. Despite having passed by PARC many times, he had never been inside until a few months ago when he was asked to be the first author featured in PARC’s new Book With Us series, which is billed as “Adventures in Reading, celebrating the richness and diversity of our neighbourhood”. FitzGerald took a tour of the centre, a place where the aim is that everyone live with dignity, safety and enough resources to achieve their potential. “I assumed it was a soup kitchen kind of a place... but what really came through to me is that it is first and foremost a community, where people can be themselves, come in and hang out and have a life together,” FitzGerald said. PARC, FitzGerald said, is a place for art, writing, activity, and humanizes the every day experience for people with mental health struggles and allows them to shed the stigma that comes from psychiatric labeling. “I think ultimately it does not do a person a service to give them some label like bipolar or schizoaffective disorder,” he said. “It becomes part of their identity and they are stuck with it.” That de-pathologizing, which he said he sees at PARC, is a topic of great interest to FitzGerald; it is a subject addressed in his 2010 book, What Disturbs Our Blood: A Son’s Quest to Redeem the Past. FitzGerald was the 2010 winner of the Writer’s’ Union Trust Prize for What Disturbs Our Blood. His first book, Old Boys, was an oral history of Upper Canada College that exposed sexual abuse at the school. It was published in 1994 and led to three teachers being charged and a class action lawsuit. What Disturbs Our Blood is a family memoir intertwined with the history of Canadian medicine and psychiatry. Both FitzGerald’s grandfather, prominent Canadian physician John (Gerry) FitzGerald and his father John (Jack) FitzGerald, also
Author James FitzGerald will speak Nov. 19 at the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre about his latest book, What Disturbs Our Blood.

a leader in Canadian medicine, were driven beyond sanity by the pressures in their careers and were immersed into mental health treatment, including electric shock therapy and insulin shock therapy, which FitzGerald said led to both men’s demise. FitzGerald grew up in Forest Hill in a privileged family and attended private school. “We had everything on the outside,” he said. “And yet there was madness in our family. There was also brilliance and brilliant achievements, but both men cracked up in their mid-life crisis in their 50s.” Connaught Labs His grandfather was founder of the internationally renowned Connaught Laboratories and the University of Toronto School of Hygiene. He initially studied psychiatry, and did internships at John Hopkins Hospital and Sheppard Pratt psychiatric hospital before becoming the clinical director and chief pathologist
of the Toronto Asylum for the Insane. He also served as Dean of Medicine at the University of Toronto. But, at the height of his career, John FitzGerald had a mid-life crisis and fell into a deep depression. He was given insulin shock therapy at an asylum in the United States. “When he got out he killed himself,” FitzGerald said. “The treatment didn’t make him better, it made him more suicidal.” That was 10 years before FitzGerald was born and his grandfather’s story was kept a family secret. The pattern continued with FitzGerald’s father, Jack FitzGerald, who was a pioneer in his field of medicine and opened the first allergy clinic in Toronto. It was when FitzGerald was 15 or 16 that his father had a nervous breakdown and fell into a depression. He tried to kill himself using morphine and again in 1970 only to be found by FitzGerald’s sister who saved him.
He spent the rest of his life, until his death in 1992, drugged and lethargic. It was with his father’s second suicide attempt that FitzGerald, a budding journalist, said he started to delve into his family’s secrets of suicide and mental health. “That was the turning point because that was when I started asking questions,” FitzGerald said. He started researching and asking questions of his father and grandfather’s aging colleagues and his mother to learn more about these men who were virtual strangers to him. It wasn’t until he went to the CAMH archives in 1995, and by what he calls a “cosmic coincidence” found 60 confessional letters written by his grandfather at the end of his life to a psychiatrist friend. “They had been sitting for 40 years untouched on a shelf,” he explained. “That week that I decided to walk in there (the wife of the friend) decided to donate
them to the CAMH archives.” He read them all in one sitting, uncovering the dramatic and emotional life of a man who was a complete stranger to FitzGerald up to that point. “Then I realized I had a book,” he said. That book, What Disturbs Our Blood, is a true to life psychological drama and mystery novel exploring the fine line between high achievement and madness. “It is not a love letter to psychiatry,” FitzGerald said. “It is a kind of indictment of the history of psychiatry.” FitzGerald will discuss his book at PARC, 1499 Queen St. W., on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The event is pay-what-you-can with a suggested donation of $10. Refreshments and a tour of PARC facilities will be offered. The primary impetus of the series is community outreach, welcoming the broader community into PARC to see what they do there, as well as showcasing local authors who write about subjects that touch the neighbourhood.

Infrastructure funding a priority
A
coalition of municipal and business groups working to put pressure on the federal government to come up with a national funding plan to deal with growing transit and infrastructure needs has made it clear cities such as Toronto can’t wait much longer. The Municipal Infrastructure Forum was created by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) just more than a year ago and is made up of representatives of municipal governments, business, chambers of commerce and other groups such as the Insurance Board of Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees. At a press conference in Toronto, speakers such as Toronto Board of Trade CEO Carol Wilding, FCM President Karen Leibovici and Robert Tremblay, from the Insurance Board of Canada, talked about the toll aging infrastructure systems are taking on the city. “Our overstretched networks are becoming a major barrier to our growing economy,” Wilding said. “Toronto’s problems of gridlock and poor transit connectivity are our view among the worst of any major urban centre in the world.” Time to show Tremblay also offered a warning about how Toronto would leadership is fare if it had been hit by a storm similar to what New York City now had to deal with when super storm Sandy recently hit. He said Toronto’s water and sewer systems are “underdesigned” and not built to withstand instances of extreme weather, which seem to be becoming more common. “That’s what the real challenge is, making sure our infrastructure can withstand the new climatic realities,” Tremblay said. Missing from this equation, however, is clear direction from the federal government. What’s needed is guaranteed, long-term funding that recognizes the importance of these needs. These are investments in our future the federal government must take the lead on. Provincial and municipal governments also have a huge role to play, but the leadership must start with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. To that end, Toronto residents should be asking their MPs of all political stripes, but especially those who are members of the Conservative government, where they stand and what they are going to do. A sewer and water system that can’t deal with major storms puts the safety of residents at risk. Congested roads and a public transit system that’s decades out of date puts our jobs and economic future at risk. Toronto’s MPs must address these issues and start showing some political leadership.

During Remembrance Day 2012 we wore a red poppy in thanks and remembrance. But fighting for our rights and freedom began in 1812, when Canadian volunteers and British soldiers joined forces to fight an invading army. After the battle of Lundy’s Lane, locals noticed that red geraniums were growing over the battlefield. When the War of 1812 ended, the citizens started to wear red geraniums to honour those who fought for their rights and freedom and to remember the ones who gave their lives. As time went on, the tradition of wearing a red geranium passed out of existence. The Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is currently being commemorated. In addition to wearing a red poppy, let us bring back the tradition of wearing a red geranium to honour those who fought for our rights and freedom 200 years ago. Lest We Forget. Always in remembrance, Robert Heath
Symbolic Jarvis bike lane war continues It’s been a traumatic week for cyclists downtown. The City of Toronto’s transportation department kicked off the week attempting to remove bike lanes on Jarvis Street. Cycling community members responded by doing their best to stop that work. The fight over the Jarvis bike lanes continues, an ugly echo of a very ugly election campaign in which the lanes themselves became a symbol of the very symbolic war on the car. For those on the ‘car’ side of that war, their removal is a victory – the knocking down of the Berlin Bike Lane, as it were. Of course, in addition to its properties as a symbolic battlefield, the Jarvis Street bike lanes also had a practical application: they were a piece of a larger infrastructure that makes it safer for cyclists to travel north and

south to the east of Yonge Street. And to that end, the proponents of removing the lanes offered up a placating alternative. Just a few blocks further to the east, the city would take the bike lanes on Sherbourne Street and turn them into fully separated lanes. The argument there was that full separation from traffic would make an even safer route for cyclists than the Jarvis lanes, which are only lines of paint. I’m not so sure that’s the case. I’ve ridden those lanes as a commuter, and observed them as a pedes-
trian. And it seems to me that the separated lanes are more of a comfort to drivers on Sherbourne than they are to cyclists. The entire run isn’t finished, and the part I’ve ridden is the very northward section – from Wellesley to Bloor streets. The lanes vary between raised sections of curb about the height of the sidewalk, open spots where buses and taxis can pull up to the curb and sections of road blocked off by speedhump-sized raised curbs. The lanes are a little wider than a standard bike lane, making it possible for considerate cyclists to pass one another, with care. It is impossible to get around a car that has pulled onto the bike lane: crossing the curb that a car can mount easily would likely result in a tumble for anyone but an experienced
cyclist. And it’s not just cars. On Friday night, waiting in line to attend a concert at the Phoenix, it was possible to count dozens of concertgoers who were using the bike lane as an extended sidewalk. Any cyclist trying to make his way down Sherbourne would have had to dismount and ride in the single-car lane, get off the bike and walk or risk running into oblivious pedestrians. Again, a painted line would make it easy for a cyclist to quickly and carefully get around curbside obstacles. Under the current administration, separated bike lanes in the downtown core along with expanded recreational trails look to be the future of cycling infrastructure. And that infrastructure works very well to get cyclists off the roads now dedicated to cars.

Theatre production is based on amusement park’s demise Boblo runs Nov. 22 to Dec. 2 ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com

The Boblo Island Amusement Park rides are long gone. The old dance hall, built in 1910, still stands, but rusts away amongst falling buildings, and once bright lamp posts linger in vacant fields. The Boblo Island Amusement Park, which was on an island in the Detroit River, across from the town of Amherstburg, Ont., was in operation from 1898 to 1993. A visit there by couple and creative partners Erin Brandenburg and Andrew Penner led them to their latest creation, titled Boblo – a fusion of theatre, music and visual art. “It was so weird because I remember going there as a kid and seeing all these things when it was vibrant and alive,” said Brandenburg. “Now going back as an adult, I don’t feel like it was that long ago, but it is this totally different place.” Brandenburg and Penner, otherwise known as Kitchenband and who live at Brock and Queen in Parkdale, both grew up in Leamington, Ont., which is an hour east of Amherstburg. Boblo was a childhood playground for the pair. “We both had the same reference points. We had been there as kids and our families had gone,” she explained. “It was a happy and good place.” That disjointed juxtaposition of today’s ruins contrasted against the vibrant, fun-filled space of yesteryear gave rise to the creation of Boblo. Even though it has been closed for nearly 20 years, people have a strong connection to the island and the memories of the amusement park, she said. A development company now owns the island, she added, and about one third of the land has been developed as a gated community of sorts with huge houses and condos. “It’s all very manicured and there’s a marina and a restaurant and it’s all very clean and nice and beautiful,” she said. “The other two-thirds of the island is the old amusement park buildings.” The majority of the show

is original music written by Penner and played by a sixpiece band. The style spans the life of the amusement park, so it goes from old-time vaudeville pieces to 1980s pop. Within that music there is a story of a woman who is trying to piece together memories and snippets of stories to find meaning in it all. “It is definitely not a beginning-middle-end of a story,” she said. “It is definitely a collage or a meditation with stories, images and music, all talking about this island as the theme. “We are almost trying to show the landscape of the memory of a place,” Brandenburg said. Boblo will be akin to seeing a music concert, but weaving in and out of the songs and layering on top of them are stories and memories of the island amusement park as well as video projection, lights, family photos, souvenirs and sound. “We are playing with combining a theatrical experience and storytelling with that musical sensibility,” she said. “Also the energy of a live performance.” It is a marriage of the couple’s talents and experi-
ence: Brandenburg’s training and expertise in theatre and Penner who performs in the Toronto-based band the Sun Parlour Players. “For the last five or six years we have been doing more and more of our own creations,” she said. “The way we have been putting things together is getting really talented artists that we want to work with in the room and then letting everyone invest their own ideas and memories and whatever they are excited about doing into the project,” she said. A c o - p r o d u c t i o n by Kitchenband and The Theatre Centre, Boblo was created through a two-year residency at the Theatre Centre and will be performed in The Great Hall Black Box Theatre at 1087 Queen St. W. This will be the last show the theatre centre produces in the space before they move to their new home in the Historic Carnegie Library next fall. Boblo runs from Nov. 22 to Dec. 2, Wednesday to Saturday at 7.30 p.m. and Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. There will also be a late night show Friday, Nov. 30 at 10.30 p.m. To purchase tickets, visit www.theatrecentre.org

Painting Another Good Night ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com One night in September, five painters created 100 paintings as part of the Queen West Art Crawl’s Night Crawl in Parkdale. It was an event intended to turn the inherently solitary process of painting on its head; the upcoming exhibition brings the work back to the traditional gallery setting. Another Good Night, as the event was titled, featured Toronto artists engaged in a live ‘exaggeration’ of their studio practice. The canvasses were hung throughout the upstairs room at The Rhino and over the course of the evening, as people came and went watching the work evolve, the paintings were completed. Now an exhibition is being mounted so viewers can see the paintings created at Another Good Night in a different context according to artist and organizer David
McKenzie. “The night of, they were thrown all over the room, they were leaning against walls and face up on tables drying,” McKenzie said. “So I think it is important to show them in a context where you can actually really see the paintings, rather than seeing them in dim lighting, scattered around the room.” Viewing the work in a gallery changes the experience of seeing the paintings, but it doesn’t change the meaning of the work, according to McKenzie. The work from Another Good Night will show at Creators: Collective, located at 822 Dundas St. W. All of the paintings will be on display from Nov. 15 to Nov. 21. The opening reception is at 8 p.m. on Nov. 15 and is free to attend. Painters featured are: McKenzie, Chris Pemberton, Jack Cerre, Morgan Booth and Oscar Figueroa.

Kennedy pointed out that he wasn’t at the table when these decisions were made.
Rid the poison
David McKenzie is one of five painters who created 100 paintings as part of the Queen West Art Crawl’s Night Crawl. Those paintings, including this one by McKenzie, are on display at Creators: Collective, 822 Dundas St. W.
He said he would bring his experience working with the not-for-profit sector to bring both sides of the political spectrum together to rid the “poison that seems to permeate Queen’s Park.” No stranger to leadership races, Kennedy first pursued the provincial Liberal leadership, but lost to McGuinty on the final ballot. He would run for federal leadership in 2006. Kennedy taught at Ryerson

Remembrance Day

NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Shortly after Malvern Collegiate’s historic First World War monument was vandalized last November, Canada’s veterans affairs minister Steven Blaney promised tougher laws, saying he was “appalled and saddened”. This year, using the southeast Toronto high school as a backdrop, he offered additional support – funding to help restore vandalized memorials. “In the near future, I plan to introduce an initiative which will help fast-track applications for funding to assist in repairing damage to cenotaphs and monuments as a result of vandalism,” said Blaney in a statement Nov. 8. He was represented at the school by his parliamentary secretary Eve Adams, the MP for Mississauga-Brampton South. In last year’s announcement, Blaney announced the tougher laws would come about through government
support of a private members bill from one of its own members, David Tilson (DufferinCaledon). That bill is now in the hands of the senate after recently passing third and final reading by MPs in the House of Commons. When passed by the senate, the bill would impose a minimum $1,000 fine for a first offense with second and third offenses carrying minimum 14- and 30-day prison sentences. While Tories and Liberals supported the bill, NDP MPs all voted against, including Matthew Kellway, the Beaches-East York MP (whose riding covers Malvern CI). He explained his opposition during the first reading of the bill earlier in the year: “It seems that all transgressions under government and private members’ bills coming from the other side seem to end with someone getting incarcerated, as if incarceration is a redeeming and ennobling exercise.” He then referred to a statement he had received from Vandra Masemann, president

of Malvern’s alumni association and also chair of the war memorial restoration committee, who also opposed the bill. She wrote, in part: “I ponder on who are going to be the ones that do these things (vandalize war memo-
rials) – young males around 18 to 24. These boys are the same as the Boys of Malvern who died and who are remembered on that monument. We cannot rescue those boys who died, but we can rescue the ones who have done such a foolish and stupid thing as to
vandalize a war memorial. “We need to be much more creative about the kind of consequence that will teach them the awful significance of what they have done. Giving them a criminal record and letting them learn nothing from the experience is of
no redemptive significance whatsoever. It is imperative that they understand the nature of the act they have committed, and surely their cellmates will not be able to do this.” Malvern’s Memorial was vandalized last year just before Remembrance Day – and just days after an official re-dedication ceremony to celebrate its restoration. The school, its alumni and the community had joined forces to restore the aging memorial at a cost of more than $50,000 over six years – only to see it vandalized. The $2,000 ransacking was soon cleaned up and improved lighting and security cameras added. Police are still looking for the suspects. “The journey to get to this point was not easy,” said Line Pinard, the school’s principal for the last nine years, crediting parent Arnie Williamson for all of his hard work to get the ball rolling on the restoration project. - with files from Joanna Lavoie
