A HANDS-ON NUIT BLANCHE PROJECT

Years of work finally come to fruition Years of work by the West End Food Co-operative (WEFC) will come to fruition Saturday when it opens the doors to its new Food Hub. The WEFC is a Parkdale-based, non-profit, multi-stakeholder food co-operative with consumer, worker, producer and community partner members. For the past six years it has been a goal of the WEFC to create a Food Hub: a space for a community kitchen and a community cannery; a place for educational workshops, training and events; and a retail space for west end residents to access healthy, local and seasonal foods. The WEFC launched a Bond Campaign and various fundraisers, food mapping and surveys – all with the aim of one day opening the community Food Hub. They found a 3,000-square-foot space in the basement of the Parkdale Community Health Centre (PCHC) at 1229 Queen St. W., started construction and continued to fundraise. SHELVES STOCKED Now, the shelves are being stocked and the cash registers are in place, ready for shoppers when the Food Hub opens on Oct. 6 at 9 a.m. There will be information at the event on how to become a member of the co-op. The grand opening celebration will last until 5 p.m. on Saturday. Going forward the Food Hub will be open four days a week, Thursday to Sunday. Hours are Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NUIT BLANCHE: Dana Seguin is one of the last people standing in the early hours Sunday during John Sasaki’s Nuit Blanche art installation, ‘LEITMOTIF: Hands on the Van’, at the Amphitheatre at Dufferin Street. The exhibit highlighted the absurdity of standing outside in the cold for $500 as contestants vied for the artist’s fee, on display as a guarded pile of money inside the van.

Keys handed over for Habitat house LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As Lorena Sinato received the keys to her new Habitat for Humanity home on Monday, she said she knew the home in Roncesvalles Village would have a significant impact on not only her life, but also that of her young son’s.

The Parkdale-Liberty Villager - A Metroland Community Newspaper

Looking forward to having friends over, Sinato said the tree-lined Ritchie Avenue home would provide ample space for her son, Bryan, 9, who is legally blind and lives with cerebral palsy, while ensuring his safety. But, most of all, it would offer him “comfort and happiness.” “Having a place we can call home is wonderful,” Sinato said. “And that @ParkdaleLiberty

is what Bryan deserves.” Her sentiments are echoed by the more than 80 Habitat for Humanity homeowners, who were surveyed for the non-profit organization’s 2012 report: ‘Building a Better City: The Social Impact of Habitat for Humanity Homes in Toronto.’ On Oct. 1, World Habitat Day as designated by both the United

Nations and Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, Habitat for Humanity CEO Neil Hetherington released the findings of the survey at Queen’s Park. He was joined by Davenport Councillor Ana Bailao, chair of the City of Toronto’s affordable housing committee, who presented the Mayoral Proclamation. >>>HABITAT, page 6

TRANSIT FUNDING City manager gives councillors a menu of taxes, fees and other revenue sources to fund transit.

Theatre Centre to start reno on new home ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com

T

he changing landscape of West Queen West may have forced many out with rising rents and condo construction, but the not-for-profit arts organization The Theatre Centre was not only able to survive in the high demand area, but has secured a new, more permanent, home. On Oct. 11 the Theatre Centre, now operating out of pop-up space at 1095 Queen Street West, will begin construction to retrofit the historic Carnegie Library at 1115 Queen Street West to create a new, assessable and community oriented arts hub. The Theatre Centre, which incorporated as a not-for-profit in 1981, develops, presents and produces live performance through collaboration between artists, staff and audience and provides artists with infrastructure and resources to make their art. Franco Boni has been the General and Artistic Director of The Theatre Centre since 2003. “For us it is about incubation and residency,” he said. “It is the support of the development of an idea over the long term, that is the important thing.” Boni explained The Theatre Centre has called West Queen West home for 23 years, long before all of the arts establishments that exist in the area were there. It was once housed at 1032 Queen Street West and then at 1087 Queen Street West as part of the Great Hall building. With the rising cost of rents and gentrification in the area its tenancy at the Great Hall was unstable. But, in 2005, Boni said, two things

happened around the same time that led the Theatre Centre to its, soon to be, new home. “The first was the activism of Active 18, responding to the number of condo developers who were very interested in redeveloping the Queen West Triangle,” he said. Boni became involved with Active 18, residents and business-owners association of Ward 18, and as part of his work with the organization he identified Historic Carnegie Library, a landmark building on the strip, as a potential new space

for the centre. At the same time, the councillor at the time, Adam Giambrone, had identified the library as having potential as a community space or a community hub. “It was really a collision of a number of different agendas, ours, the councillor wanting to give back to the community a public arts space,” Boni explained. Through a great deal of hard work by the community, Active 18, the developers and city councillors The Theatre Centre was able to secure a

long term lease for the library. “It is the efforts of all of those people, and I am not just saying that,” Boni said. “They moved mountains to make this happen.” On Oct. 11 a celebration will be held to mark the beginning on renovations to the building. “It really is a celebration of the initial funds given to The Theatre Centre,” he said, adding the fundraising campaign for the renovations has reached 85 per cent of the 6.2 million dollar goal. The Theatre Centre has been sup-

ported by the City of Toronto, The Metcalf Foundation, the Province of Ontario, Canadian Heritage and the Trillium Foundation. Boni said the design of the new Theatre Centre space is beautiful and fully accessible. “It will be a place that people in the condos, living in small units because a lot of them are 500 to 800 square feet, can gather,” he said. “We want to be their living room, that is the goal.” Upon entering the new space you will find a café with lots of windows that open up to some stadium seating. “We want it to be a performance space and multi-use,” Boni said. “It is a hub, a living room, a place you can come and hang out.” There is also a rehearsal space and an upper lobby that is about 1000 square feet with 15-foot ceilings that can be used for installations. There is a roof-top terrace and a green roof that overlooks Queen Street. The heart of the new centre is a 200-seat performance space. They will continue to do the events they traditionally have, like the City of Craft sale, but Boni said the new space will enable them to do much more. “I would love to introduce new projects,” he said, adding that there is a brand new park to be built next to the old library and The Theatre Centre can look at ways to animate that space. The ceremony to mark the beginning of construction takes place at the Library, 1115 Queen Street West, at 11 a.m. and the public is welcome to attend. Construction will take about 10 months and Boni said the new Theatre Centre should be open by the fall of next year.

Farmers market looking to expand year-round ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The Liberty Village Farmers Market is looking for a space to accommodate a year-round market in the west end neighbourhood. Operated under the ‘MyMarket’ banner, certifying that all of its vendors are verified farmers selling only what they produce, the season typically runs from June to midOctober in the Green P parking lot on Hanna Avenue. Bu t Di a n a G o n z a l ez , T h e My Ma r k e t To r o n t o D i s t r i c t Supervisor, said she is in the beginning stages of looking for a space suitable for a farmers market to run

in the winter months. “It’s certainly something that I think would go over well in that location. We probably will be able to find a space that is large enough and suitable for an indoor market.” She is optimistic plans for a yearround market will come together this year. “We certainly have heard from the shoppers we have spoken to that it is something they would like to see. It is just a matter of finding a location.” The market, whose last day at its outdoor location is slated for this Sunday (Oct. 21), began in 2007 selling goods like organic vegetables, free range eggs, honey, Angus beef,

baked goods, and maple syrup. MyMarket also runs the Bloor/ Borden market on Wednesdays, the East Lynn Park market on Thursdays, the Ryerson University Market on Tuesdays and a market at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). Not successful “We have a market at SickKids that goes on year-round only it hasn’t been very successful so I don’t believe we will continue with it this year,” Gonzalez said. “However, a farmer suggested perhaps Liberty Village would be a good location for it and I thought that was a great

idea.” A year-round Liberty Village market, Gonzalez said, would most likely stay on the same day as it is currently held (Sunday) and at the same time (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.). “People are used to going on Sunday and they would like to continue doing that going forward,” she said. “An ideal location would be somewhere farmers could easily access and where shoppers, obviously, could easily access it.” The MyMarket series of markets is unique in the field of farmers markets in that it doesn’t allow resellers, crafters or restaurants at their markets. The Liberty Village

farmers’ markets feature only verified farmers, selling only what they produce. “It is specifically for farmers so anyone that we have selling at our markets, if they have baked goods or value added products it is because they made it at their farm kitchen,” Gonzalez explained. As a result Gonzalez said product and food items will be lower in the wintertime, but she hopes they will still be able to have a lucrative market that will still attract shoppers. “It would end up being a different kind of market than you would see at say Brickworks,” Gonzalez said.

Junior Citizen Awards a chance to nurture creativity

W

ho are the outstanding youth in your community? The Ontario Community Newspapers Association, of which The Parkdale Villager is a member, wants to know. They want to know about the youth who are performing community service – independently, or through their schools and volunteer organizations. These youth are performing heroic acts. They’re contributing to their community while living with a physical or psychological limitation. They do more than what is our view normally expected of someone their age. A number of youth from Toronto communities have been both nominated and recognized over the years. Last year, two of them, Kalem McSween and Andrew Sigmaringam, then 17, were among the 12 provincial recipients. Overall, there were 176 nominees from across the province. McSween, a North York resident, served as a peer mentor to Grade 9 students who have been struggling and are “at risk” both academically and socially. He was also selected to participate with the Toronto Police Services’ Youth in Policing Initiative. Sigmaringam, an Etobicoke resident, helped raise $5,000 for the Free the Children charity and has assisted children with autism. Born deaf, he had cochlear implant surgery as a toddler to allow him to hear. He also shares his personal experiences as a guest speaker at workshops. Any Ontario resident between six and 17 (as of Nov. 30) is eligible to be nominated. Up to 12 nominees will be chosen as recipients of a provincial award and will be invited to a special ceremony next spring. Recognizing youth contributions is positive. But this should go beyond actual recognition. Ultimately, the value of Ontario Junior Citizen Awards is more than providing deserved recognition for the fine work youth do in our communities. We recently wrote in this space on the value of engaging younger citizens for the purpose of ensuring existing volunteer organizations survive a change in generational leadership. We must nurture that innovation and creativity to ensure it blossoms. When our future leaders are being encouraged to explore a pioneering spirit, it means there are fresh, relevant and contemporary solutions to community challenges. The nomination deadline is Nov. 30. Nomination forms are available at www.ocna.org/ juniorcitizen or by calling 905-639-8720 ext. 239.

We must encourage future leaders

No end to Toronto transit funding talk Oh, goody. The October meeting of Mayor Rob Ford’s Executive Committee will have a familiar treat: a long talk about how the city might fund major transit expansion projects in the future. It is familiar indeed. From Mel Lastman to David Miller to Ford, the dream of big transit projects has fueled both rhetoric and design like no other project except maybe property tax increases. In that sense, the conversation starting this month and going into next spring will be a little stilted, and might not go anywhere. That’s because the report from City Manager Joe Pennachetti frames the question at the nexus of those ideas: namely, how to finance big transit expansion. The report is something Toronto council asked for,

THE CITY

david nickle

mostly in response to Ford’s plan to build a Sheppard subway into Scarborough using private sector money and federal and provincial grants. In shutting down the subway dream, council decided to look at ways of financing transit absent either the private sector or nominal help from higher orders of government. It is a sensible thing to do: an “adult” conversation that determines what exactly Torontonians are willing to pay for in the way of public transit. The report looks at hiking the land transfer tax by a percentage

point, reinstating a $100 vehicle registration tax, imposing road tolls and a one per cent property tax hike. In the same agenda, the city manager is setting up a plan to devise a transit plan itself based upon a review of the city’s Official Plan. Once again, it is a sober and sensible approach to transit planning. Well, there is still an element of pipe dream to it all. Because even as Toronto council is considering these plans, so too is Metrolinx. Metrolinx also is looking at ways to finance its own transit expansion plans, which encompass the entire Golden Horseshoe. The question becomes: if roads do get tolled in Toronto, just whose projects will that money go toward? And so the transit conversation will go on, with no end in sight.

To the editor: Re: ‘Transit users speak out against bad behaviour,’ Special Report, Sept. 27. I read the article by Rahul Gupta; I could not believe the comments made by TTC chief customer service officer Chris Upfold. “Rudeness is not something that catches my attention as being high.” Another statement by Upfold was that riders should alter their travel patterns and the times they travel in order to reduce potential disputes. I could go on and on. The message sent by Upfold was rudeness and disrespect for others wins. Values, respect, manners and etiquette are instilled into us at an early age with maturity bringing that forward to our later years. Once again the TTC has exposed itself to show us how deep their problems lie. The TTC biggest hurdle is the TTC. Ray Blais

Metroland Central expands its reach Division now extends from Toronto to North Bay Metroland Media Group’s Metroland Central division now stretches all the way to North Bay, under the direction of Toronto Community News publisher and Metroland vice president Ian Proudfoot. The division, previously comprised of Toronto Community News and York Region Media Group, now reaches a readership of more than 900,000 homes on a weekly basis, stretching from the heart of the city in Toronto to North Bay in Ontario’s Near North, now incorporating Simcoe/ Muskoka division properties. The expansion offers exciting

new opportunities and relationships for readers, clients, community partners and the more than 800 talented employees in Metroland Central, Proudfoot said. Acknowledged as a passionate advocate of the newspaper industry, both print and online, Proudfoot now is publisher of more than 50 print and online products. “Removing borders has created exceptional opportunities for our clients to extend their reach,” Proudfoot said. In announcing the expanded division, effective Oct. 1, Metroland president Ian

Oliver paid tribute to retiring vice-president and Simcoe/ Muskoka regional publisher Joe Anderson. “Joe’s creativity, drive and strategic focus have made him a significant contributor to Metroland.” Proudfoot led the creation of the Metroland Central division in May, adding Toronto Community News (TCN) to his York Region Media Group, upon the retirement of TCN publisher Betty Carr. Metroland’s Toronto, York Region, Simcoe, Muskoka, Parry Sound and North Bay media properties have a tradition of

creating strong community partnerships and supporting non-profit organizations, through volunteering, donations and services. Proudfoot’s longtime commitment and outstanding contribution to community was recognized when he received a 2011 Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship. He is quick to acknowledge the contributions and talents of his employees. “I’m honoured to work with people who have true passion for their communities and what they do on a daily basis,” Proudfoot said.

A day for you to work ON your business, not just IN it

A team of volunteers posed more than 60 questions to families, which took approximately an hour, explained Gillian Bartlett, of Bartlett Cultural Connections, author of the report. “I think it was a fabulous study to have undertaken. I think the results are such a pleasure to have seen,” she said. Respondents were asked to report on their family’s lives at the time they applied for a Habitat home.

eownership led to strengthened communities and opened doors for low-income youth. For example, 97 per cent feel pride in their new homes – a 53 per cent increase since before the home was purchased. Respondents report a 135 per cent increase in inviting visitors to their homes and 92 per cent say they will remain in their Habitat home for a long time and couldn’t imagine ever leaving. Meanwhile, 76 per cent of homeowners report an improvement in their children’s school grades and 93 per cent say it’s now easier for them to find space to complete homework; 88 per cent report an improvement in their children’s confidence and 81 per cent an increase in their children’s social lives; and 97 per cent of school-aged children living in a Habitat home are still in school. “What is clear from our survey is that people feel empowered and are able to break the cycle of poverty,” said Hetherington. No child who grew up in a Habitat home has ever needed one himself, a fact Hetherington was happy to share. Last fall, Habitat for Humanity released a report that focused on the economic impact of Habitat homeownership on the City of Toronto, ‘From Subsidies to Sustainable Communities.’ “On average, a family’s net worth increased by $28,000 once they moved into affordable housing,” Hetherington noted. “Families moved from a subsidy of $600 into a benefit to the city of $250 a month.”

Campaigning to end stigma of mental illness ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com A table with cupcakes, tablecloths and napkins – all teal. Women with pants, T-shirts and even toenails – all teal. But while teal was the theme of the gathering on Sept. 28 at the MasarykCowan Community Centre, it was more than just a colour scheme: it serves as an acronym for Teaching Everyone Awareness and Love (TEAL), a campaign to end the stigma around mental health. TEAL the teddy bear is the mascot for a public awareness campaign that aims to create a dialogue about mental illness and health and how people are committed to end the stigma of mental illness in their communities. TEAL will be mailed to agencies and communities all over Canada to start a dialogue about mental health. At each stop, people are encouraged to take photos with TEAL and write stories about its visit. All

Staff of Arrabon House, a home for young women in South Parkdale, gather around TEAL the teddy bear.

of the photos and stories of TEAL’s travels will be documented on a Facebook page. This awareness campaign is an initiative of Arrabon House and its Stop the Crazy movement. Arrabon House, located in South Parkdale, is a home for young women in need of shelter and support. FIGHT STIGMA Hazel Williams, a youth worker at Arrabon House, originally came up with the idea of using a teddy bear to fight stigma.

She explained she was in a vehicle with Wendy Curnew, a youth worker and community outreach coordinator at Arrabon House, talking about what the next Stop The Crazy project should be. They started out with the idea of creating a quilt, but decided it might get too big to mail around the country. “Then I came up with the bear,” Williams said. “The bear is drawing a lot of attention to us and I would like to see that continue,” said Williams. “I am also excited for it to travel to other parts of the

country and see what other people do with the bear, where they take the bear.” The executive director of Arrabon House, Karen Prosper, said she expects this exercise will help increase the exposure Arrabon House gets and enable them to get to know other agencies that do similar work. TEAL is scheduled to start its journey by travelling around Parkdale. It will then head to Newfoundland and across the country, returning at the end of April of next year to kick off Mental Health Awareness Month in May 2013. Stop the Crazy, which is run on a volunteer basis by Arrabon House staff, held its first event in May 2012 where they gathered people and lined Queen Street as a statement about ending the stigma around mental health. Parkdale organizations can also request a visit from the TEAL mascot before it heads east, by leaving a message on the Facebook page.
