Majestic Roncesvalles tree granted heritage status

Silver maple subject of two-minute video LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The majestic silver maple, a fixture on Roncesvalles Avenue for more than a century, has been granted heritage status by the Ontario Heritage Tree Program.

A celebration to commemorate its designation will be held Saturday, Oct. 27.

“I’m so proud it finally came to be,” said a jubilant Karyn Klaire Koski, a Roncesvalles Village environmental steward.

In the spring, Klaire Koski, a TV producer, submitted a video nomination of the beloved tree, capturing its essence in the less than two-minute short.

The video, submitted along with an evaluation by a technical expert, was reviewed by a Trees Ontario committee to determine the silver maple’s historical and cultural significance. The first-ever video nomination impressed members of the program, said spokesperson Azadeh Chobak, but they were moved more so by the attributes of the tree itself.

“It is believed to be one of the oldest commercial trees in Toronto,” Chobak told The Villager. “The age of the tree itself – the fact that it is

It has witnessed the evolution of the neighbourhood, added Chobak, who said the committee was taken by residents’ passion for the tree.

“We get a lot of calls regarding this silver maple,” she admitted.

Situated on the east side of Roncesvalles Avenue, just south of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, the silver maple stands 11 metres high – approximately the height of a four-storey building. Its circumference is 320 centimetres.

During the recent renovation and construction on Roncesvalles Avenue, the City of Toronto and the community joined forces to safeguard the tree. As part of the sidewalk reconstruction, flexible sidewalk tile was installed instead of conventional pavers to protect the roots and ensure better circulation of air and water. >>>heritage, page 16

It’s a straight shot, roughly 30 storeys, up a ladder on the inside of the shaft to reach the top of WindShare’s ExPlace wind turbine.

The climb isn’t for the faint of heart and takes some stamina explained Wesley Normington, development coordinator at TREC Education, but when you reach the top the views are incredible.

Now, Climb the Turbine, a firsttime fundraiser of TREC Education, a not-for-profit that offers renewable energy education programs for students and communities, offers the experience and the view to teams of two who are able to raise $1000.

“It is a unique experience that you are not going to be able to get anywhere else, unless you become a wind turbine technician,” Normington said.

As far as TREC Education can tell, this is the first and only turbine climbing fundraiser in North America according to Normington.

“It is a great opportunity to both raise positive awareness for wind energy in Ontario, while raising funds for educational programs for

wind energy,” Normington said.

In addition to raising funds for educational programming, the climb is also a means of educating the climb participants on renewable energy by giving them inside access to the Toronto landmark that isn’t regularly available to the public.

“Renewable energy still is something that isn’t greatly understood by the public. There is a lot of misinformation out there, a lot of rumours, so we are just trying to educate the public and present them with the facts,” Normington said.

“This is a fantastic way of doing it, by giving them actual access and a hands-on experience with the wind turbine.”

Climb the Turbine takes place Oct. 26 to 28. A guide will accompany teams of two. Teams are required to raise $1000 or more in order to participate in the climb. The trek takes approximately one to one and a half hours to complete and along the way the guide will explain the workings of the turbine and the importance of it to the participants.

Only one team at a time can make the climb and Normington said TREC Education expects they can accommodate 20 teams during the

three days.

The money raised will go toward Kids’ World of Energy, a program that delivers in-class, hands-on workshops for students across Ontario.

TREC Education, which operates out of 401 Richmond, runs some of its workshops at Exhibition Place, where there are a number of sustainable energy initiatives, such as a green roof on the Horse Palace, geothermal heating in the Press Building and of course the highly visible wind turbine.

“This probably isn’t the best place to put a turbine, but it is highly visible and it is part of Exhibition Place’s sustainable installations,” explained Kirsten Vanstone, education director at TREC Education. “It was always meant as an educational thing and we have formalized that with our programming.”

The 91-metre (299 ft) tall ExPlace wind turbine, the first urban-based and co-operatively owned wind turbine in North America, is coowned by the WindShare and Toronto Hydro. TREC Education’s sister organization TREC Renewable Energy Co-operative played a key role in the construction of the tur-

“There is a lot of good stuff down here. It is a lot of fun to tell the kids all that is happening (at Exhibition Place),” Vanstone said.

TREC Education specializes in educational programs designed around youth and has a specific niche in energy education.

“Energy is one of those components of environmental education that is often, not ignored, but relegated a bit because it is kind of hard to understand,” Vanstone

said. “So I see TREC Education’s mission as educating people about our energy use, where we get our energy from and the impact of both generating energy and using it, on the environment.”

In addition to fundraising TREC Education gets funding from government grants, sponsorship and through foundations.

For the past 15 years the lower level of an old United Church at 761 Queen St. W. has been the ideal home for the Community Bicycle Network (CBN), said board chair Adrian Currie.

“This is a perfect space. It is huge with high ceilings, a back entrance,” Currie said. “The only thing this place is missing is a storefront.”

But, the organization is now being forced to move and is searching for a new home in downtown Toronto.

CBN is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving communities through cycling and recycling.

Started in 1993, CBN offers affordable bike repairs, do-it-yourself space where people can come and

use the space and tools. It sells used and obsolete parts, runs workshops and rents bikes, which fund their operations.

“Our mandate is to promote the use of sustainable transportation through the use of bicycles,” Currie explained. “We focus on low income, at risk communities in Toronto.”

The building they currently reside in, which houses a number of not-for-profit organizations, was purchased by R&B Properties from the United Church and tenants are required to move out by Dec. 31, 2012.

“In September of 2011 we found out that the building had been sold and we would have to move,” Currie said. “We don’t know what their plans are for the building, but it sounds like it is going to be commercial and residential.”

“But if we were to move outside of the downtown core we risk losing a lot of our customer base and our membership base – the people that know about us and come and use our services.”

They have thought about pairing with other bicycle organizations or not-for profits to share space and save on rent, but that too hasn’t panned out.

The CBN needs to find a ground floor, 1000 square-feet space with a store front, preferably in an underserved neighbourhood in Toronto, accessible by walking, cycling, public transit and driving.

McGuinty’s replacement must keep transit a priority

Some want property taxpayers to suck it up with yet another new tax or toll road tax.

My position is that it is time for our corporations and unions to pay a one per cent new tax for the sole purpose of funding our public transportation systems.

alton McGuinty’s announcement Monday night that he was stepping down as Ontario’s premier and proroguing the provincial legislature has opened a number of interesting scenarios for Toronto’s many Liberal MPPs. Say what you wish about the timing of McGuinty’s move, Toronto residents can expect a number of their provincial representatives to be serious contenders for the Ontario Liberal Party’s leadership.

Toronto has been good to the Ontario Liberals, showing them strong support in the last three provincial elections.

After majority government wins in 2003 and 2007, the Liberals formed a minority government in 2011 and would not have done so without Toronto’s backing. Of our 23 seats, 18 went to the Liberals while the remaining five were taken by the NDP. Provincially, more than a third of the Liberals 53 seats at Queen’s Park belong our view to Toronto MPPs. We have strong political influence in the party, Potential and that will be reflected once the race to replace McGuinty leaders need heats up. At the same time to keep local MPPs were talking about McGuinty and his legacy, they residents were also putting out feelers about their own leadership chances. When they make their informed decision, they owe it to their constituents to let them know as soon as possible.

Part of McGuinty’s legacy is transit. He created the provincial transit authority Metrolinx with the mandate to build and fund transit across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Whoever replaces him must continue to make transit in the GTHA a priority. Any MPP from Toronto will clearly understand the importance of the transit file, and it should be a major plank in the campaigns of those running for the party’s leadership.

Progressive Conservative Party leader Tim Hudak was at Toronto City Hall Tuesday morning to talk transit at a meeting scheduled before McGuinty made his announcement. He will be making transit and traffic gridlock a key issue when we do get a provincial election call, presumably sometime after the Liberals pick their new leader.

Flanked by a number of city councillors, including Councillor Doug Ford, Hudak looks as if he’ll have no problem working with the Ford administration at city hall. McGuinty was also able to work with Mayor Rob Ford. In a statement on McGuinty’s decision, Ford said, “While we had different political views on some issues, Mr. McGuinty and I always had a very good working relationship as mayor and premier.”

Maintaining that good working relationship with Toronto’s mayor will be crucial for whoever is chosen as the Ontario Liberal Party’s next leader.

I have a thought of a great way to pay for transit in Toronto - why not designate all of the money generated by the parking control officers to fund transit.

If council wants to penalize people trying to conduct legitimate business off of the inner city roads, why not?

Surely the substantial financial haul that pours daily into the city hall coffers can be rerouted toward this essential service.

McGuinty’s decision proves need for Toronto to fund own transit It’s been a long time since anyone has illustrated the argument for made-inToronto transit funding solutions as well as our soon-to-be-former premier Dalton McGuinty did Monday night.

McGuinty’s surprise resignation was not only as leader of the Liberals and premier of the province, but as the remaining steward of Toronto’s current light rail transit expansion plan.

That $8.5 billion plan, for light rail on Eglinton, Finch and Sheppard Avenues, is the reliable base-line for hope, for those who wanted to see faster transit to suburban communities.

We’ve dreamed of other plans, of course. Mayor Rob Ford briefly created a convincing enough scenario in which the private sector might build subways to Scarborough. TTC Chair

Karen Stintz created an even shorter-lived scenario in which Toronto might have as many new transit routes as burst capillaries on an old drunk’s nose.

And now, the morning after McGuinty’s exit announcement, there are indications even the $8.5 billion light rail plan isn’t that reliable.

Tim Hudak, the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, stopped

by Toronto City Hall to affirm his preference for a Mayor Ford-style subway expansion.

Although the days are

early, it’s fair to say that Hudak’s chances of being the next premier of Ontario are excellent, as are the chances that Ontarians will be given the opportunity to weigh those chances in an election within the next six months.

What happens to the $8.5 billion in light rail funding if that happens?

Well, it’s up to Hudak.

Work’s already started on the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown line, and unless the Progressive Conservatives want to develop a reputation as the kind of government that fills in holes on Eglinton (as the Mike Harris government did there in 1995) there will probably be some form of light rail transit there.

But if the decision gets made to bury the rest of the line, that will take care of most of the $8.5 billion

right there.

And Finch and Sheppard will be unfunded.

When will subway funding come?

“When I am the next premier, we will use whatever dollars are available to build underground,” he told reporters.

Uh huh.

Toronto’s decision earlier this year to look into funding transit expansion on its own starts to look pretty good, given all that – because really, with a provincial government deep in deficit, whatever money’s available won’t pay for much light rail, let alone subways.

It’s pretty clear, as we move into our suddenly very muddy future the only reliable way to get around this town by bus, subway or light rail, is to belly up to the table and put our own money down.

Friendship and loss lead to latest clown production ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Saucisse: a Foo Musical is a tragic comedy about friendship, fate and meat.

Written and performed

by Parkdale resident Helen Donnelly, Saucisse: a Foo Musical is the story of an unlikely friendship between a nomadic peddler named Foo, one of Donnelly’s reoccurring clown personas, and a new-aged, vegetarian pig named Saucisse, who is on a mysterious mission.

As fictional a story as it may seem, this tale grew out of a real friendship between two clowns.

Donnelly is an actor, instructor and both a theatrical and therapeutic clown.

It was at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in East York that Donnelly started working with Jamie Burnett.

Donnelly’s persona was Dr. Flap, a clinical thinker, and Burnett’s persona, Ricky, was a naïve young person who believes everything he hears.

“The great thing about

clown is it directly correlates to our own personalities, it is just exaggerated,” Donnelly said. “Clown is authentic that way; good clown should reflect authentically who you are.”

Dr. Flap and Ricky used music, rhythm, movement and physical comedy to provide warmth and laughter to clients, families and staff.

The duo worked together at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital for three years until Burnett died of cancer in December at the age of 33.

“I’ve had a lot of things happen in my life, but this was the biggest one, because a clown partner is almost like a marriage,” she said. “You are there for each other, you see a lot and you share a lot.”

Following his death, Donnelly said she started to think about their relationship, what it meant to her and all she learned from Burnett.

“I guess I just wanted to start a discussion with myself about how we are with each other and acknowledging the challenges working with someone and loving someone

who is so very different from you,” Donnelly said.

At the same time, she had a germ of an idea to expand an earlier Foo skit from 15 years ago.

It was a short piece in which Foo held a sausage named Saucisse hostage and then develops a friendship with it.

Divided soul She started to explore and do free writing about the connection between this former Foo skit and her relationship with Burnett.

“I realized Jamie was Saucisse and I was this very divided soul and we had found each other somehow,” she said.

She wrote backward from there, with the Foo skit as the tragic ending.

“It is about unlikely friendship, tolerance and it’s about excepting each others paths,” Donnelly said.

Saucisse: A Foo Musical is physical theatre and the dialogue is in Donnelly’s own language called “Tubegoshian”.

“There are key words I

repeat that I want to make sure the audience understands,” she said. “And you will notice throughout the show some (words) are awfully close to English so that the audience will understand key points.”

Award-winning choreographer and Parkdale resident Viv Moore did the choreography for the performance. Original music for the one-hour tragic comedy was composed by Matthew Reid, musical director for Second City. Directed

by Susanna Hamnett, the production team also includes award-winning designers Lindsay Anne Black, set and props, and Michelle Ramsay, lighting.

Saucisse: A Foo Musical opened Oct. 11 and runs until Oct. 20 in the theatre at Pia Bouman School for Ballet and Creative movement on Noble Street in Parkdale.

MPPs plan to spend more time in community LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The premier may have called it quits and shut down the legislature, but local MPPs plan on stepping it up, promising to be even more visible in their ridings during the hiatus at Queen’s Park.

Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo says she is going to seize the opportunity to get back into her riding to speak to constituents.

She and her staff will be going door-to-door seeking feedback from community members about not only Dalton McGuinty’s departure, but what they’d like to see happen and what should happen in the legislature and closer to home.

“I’ll be knocking, walking and talking,” DiNovo told The Villager the morning after McGuinty’s Monday evening announcement.

The provincial politician revealed she wasn’t caught off guard by McGuinty’s announcement. There had been a rumour circulating

around Queen’s Park for a while.

“We were all surprised by when – but not surprised he did it. What’s really off-putting is the prorogation. That puts everything on hold. We’ve been elected to do some work here. The fact that we can’t is frustrating,” said DiNovo.

She is soliciting any suggestions her constituents may have concerning the economy and any other issue on their minds.

Meanwhile, she said she will turn her attention even more on local concerns, such as clean trains on the Georgetown South rail corridor and Air Rail Link (ARL) to Pearson Airport.

“The clean train issue is huge,” DiNovo said. “We’ll have more time to get signatures on petitions – these are really making a difference.”

DiNovo’s NDP colleague Davenport MPP Jonah Schein has also been working diligently for electric trains.

Today would have seen the second reading of his private member’s bill calling

for the electrification of the Georgetown corridor and ARL. “Now, we can’t debate this. I think that’s really disappointing. It’s part of a pattern I’ve seen here. The government has not been accountable or transparent,” said Schein, citing the ORNGE air ambulance controversy and the cancellation of gas-fired power plants in Oakville and Mississauga as examples.

Like DiNovo, Schein will take the suspended legislature as an opportunity to spend more time in his riding.

“Ultimately, people elected us to be here and in our communities, it’s frustrating,” he admitted.

Schein will be touching base with young people in schools and will be meeting with seniors and new Canadians.

“Our community office does not stop working when our legislature does,” he said. “We continue to serve our immediate neighbourhood.”

City councillor Doug Ford said he’ll work “day in and day out” to make sure that Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak is the next premier of Ontario, in the wake of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s surprise announcement that he is quitting the top job at Queen’s Park.

“We’re going to win more seats than both parties in Toronto in the upcoming election,” predicted Ford, the influential brother to Mayor Rob Ford.

He made the comments at a Tuesday morning press event with Hudak outside Toronto City Hall to talk about transportation, less than 24 hours after McGuinty had made his announcement he would not only resign, but also prorogue the Ontario Legislature until a new leader was found.

The announcement apparently caught everyone by surprise.

In a statement released

by Mayor Rob Ford’s office, the mayor wished McGuinty well and thanked him for his service as premier.

“While we had different political views on some issues, Mr. McGuinty and I always had a very good working relationship as mayor and premier,” said Ford. “I wish him well and look forward to working closely with the next premier of Ontario to advance the interests of the people of Toronto.”

Hudak, for his part, has joined NDP leader Andrea Ho r v a t h i n c a l l i n g o n McGuinty to recall the legislature.

“I think the premier is putting a lot at risk here by proroguing the existing legislature,” said Hudak outside city hall. “You put a padlock on the door and there is no more business, putting laws into effect in the province.

I’ve known Dalton McGuinty for 17 years – I was a backbencher, newly elected, he came over and shook my hand, said welcome aboard.

And I respect his decision to

resign, he’s been in public life for 22 years.

“What I do not respect is his plan to shut down the legislature. There are 600,000 men and women who woke up this morning with no job to go to.

We owe it to them to continue to work, to focus on jobs.”

Hudak was at the news conference alongside several city councillors including Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday, budget chief Mike Del Grande, public works and infrastructure chair Denzil Minnan-Wong and Doug Ford. There, he was introduced as “the next Premier of Ontario.”

During his speech, Hudak acknowledged there was a great deal of talent among conservative councillors at city hall.

Doug Ford, who mused openly about running earlier this year when it was possible the McGuinty minority government would fall, was somewhat more circumspect.

“I’ve always said I’d be interested, but that’s hypothetical,” he said. “We have interests to take care of at the city.”

Roncesvalles-inspired book wins $10,000 Toronto Book Award LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

Author Andrew J. Borkowski, a Roncesvalles Village native, is still celebrating days after winning the 2012 Toronto Book Award.

He was honoured Oct. 11 during a ceremony at the Toronto Reference Library’s Bram and Bluma Appel Salon.

His collection of short stories, Copernicus Avenue, set post Second World War, “conjures the smells and streetscapes of the Roncesvalles neighbourhood” praised the Book Awards committee. “His interwoven short stories reach into the souls of all who have struggled through adversity.”

The recognition “feels pretty amazing,” he admitted on the phone from his home in East York.

“I’m slowly coming back down to earth – initially, it was a bit of a shock. You don’t

find out ahead of time.”

Borkowski admits while he didn’t prepare a speech, he did make some notes.

However, he couldn’t seem to find them when he got to the podium so “I winged it,” he revealed.

Copernicus Avenue is a life-long endeavor, inspired by his childhood memories, growing up on Galley Avenue where he played road hockey in back alleyways, attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School and escaped to High Park on Saturdays.

“There’s a joke I like to tell, that several of these stories I’d told in bars to friends who’d say, ‘you’d better write these down or I’m going to steal them,’” said Borkowski chuckling.

These stories began to take shape for the most part when the journalist and musician hit his late 30s and early 40s. One was written when Borkowski was an undergraduate student.

“I think I was always a writer. I’ve been writing since I was a little kid,” he recalled; his first story written on a Toronto Hydro blue bound notebook, compliments of his father who worked at the utility company, titled: ‘My Adventures’ about his weekend exploits.

‘Street cred’ In elementary school, his science fiction stories were read out loud to the class by his teacher, Mr. Davis.

“This made me cool, this got me street cred,” Borkowski said.

Born in the mid-50s (at St. Joseph’s Health Centre as crews demolished Toronto’s old Sunnyside Amusement Park on the lakeshore), Borkowski likes to refer to himself as a tail-end boomer.

“I realized the extent of the world I grew up in was still on war footing. When I was a kid,

TV glorified the war. It was a large part of my childhood,” he said.

Copernicus Avenue was chosen from a list of finalists that included Dave Bidini for his biography Writing Gordon Lightfoot: The Man, the Music, and the World in 1972; Farzana Doctor for her novel Six Metres of Pavement; Michele Landsberg for her collection of columns Writing the Revolution and Suzanne Robertson for her collection of poetry Paramita, Little Black.

This year marks the 38th anniversary of the Toronto Book Awards.

Established by Toronto City Council in 1974, the awards honour authors of books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto.

The annual awards offer $15,000 in prize money.

Each finalist receives $1,000, and the winning author receives an additional $10,000.

Presto! Monthly GO passes will soon disappear Reaction among riders mixed to plan which switches to re-loadable Presto cards RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Give Presto a chance was the message Monday from GO Transit to commuters reluctant to embrace the smartcard technology.

Around 350,000 GTA transit riders are already making use of Presto, which allows users to tap the re-usuable cards at special terminals located at all GO and some TTC stations, as well other transit agencies across the region.

In addition to paying fares, Presto users can reload the card electronically by transferring funds online or at various customer service outlets.

But news that GO will discontinue its monthly passes in favour of Presto has led to hand-wringing from riders worried about the mandatory switchover to the new technology.

A spokesperson for GO said concerns could be alleviated once uncertain commuters begin using Presto.

“Just try it,” said Mary Proc,

vice-president of customer service for GO on Monday.

She said the decision to phase out the paper monthly passes by the end of 2012 reflects the popularity of Presto among GO customers, 60 per cent of whom already use the cards.

“A majority of our customers are on Presto at the moment,” said Proc. “The timing was right.”

Presto implementation has endured some setbacks recently, most notably a delayed rollout in Ottawa due to faulty card readers that led to widespread criticism.

In early October Steve Zucker, the Metrolinx executive in charge of the program, resigned. He was replaced on an interim basis by Robert Hollis.

Proc said any bumps in the road to full Presto implementation were down to “teething problems” caused by the implementation of the new technology, but those issues were largely resolved.

“As a technology, the re-

loadable fare card is here to stay,” she said.

Signs were put up at all 64 GO stations notifying commuters of the upcoming changes, said Proc.

On Twitter, news about the switch to Presto was met with mixed reactions.

“Looks like GO is forcing me into the 21st century by eliminating the monthly pass in favour of the contemptible “Presto” cards,” @ TheDailyZack tweeted.

“Go (sic) transit why must you make my life difficult and get rid of the monthly pass,” wrote @ThisisjuliaaaXO. Divyesh Mistry supported the upcoming switchover, pointing out in a series of tweets the advantages the Presto cards will have over its predecessor: “Really, all that is happening is that GO is moving from disposable paper media to reusable card technology.”

Proc said GO would add more Presto card readers at its stations based on customer feedback.

Transit public forum set for Oct. 22, 7 p.m.

Funding tools for new transit locally and region-wide are on the agenda for a public forum planned for next week in midtown.

St. Paul’s city councillor Josh Matlow is hosting the event, billed as a transit town hall, which takes place Monday at the North Toronto Memorial Community Centre, located at 200 Eglinton Avenue West,

running from 7 to 9 p.m.

The event will include a panel featuring former chief city planner Paul Bedford, Andre Cote from the Munk School at the University of Toronto, longtime transit watcher Steve Munro and representatives from TTC and Metrolinx.

Also on the agenda for discussion: the under-construction Eglinton-Scarborough

‘Human books’ at library The Toronto Public Library is hosting its third annual Human Library Saturday at three branches across the city – Toronto Reference, North York Central and Parkdale.

Artist turning heads at AGO with ultra-realistic sculptures With an uncanny eye for detail and a meticulous style, Toronto artist Evan Penny is turning heads at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Re Figured, a collection of Penny’s larger-than-life, ultra-realistic sculptures focusing largely on faces, marks the artist’s first exhibit at the AGO. Judging from the reactions of patrons, it will be the first of many.

Penny, who lives in the TrinityBellwoods area and works primarily out of a studio in the Dupont and Bathurst streets area, has been creating this genre of life-like sculptures out of silicon, aluminum and real hair for more than a decade.

“I always worked figuratively, but the question was ‘how does one become a figurative sculptor who engages contemporary concerns?’” he said.

While the sculptures vary in size, their attention to detail is impeccable – no surprise when each piece takes months to complete.

“I might be able to do six pieces in a year, but typically I’m doing multiple pieces at a time,” he said. “It’s very craft-driven, artisanal work, not the kind of thing you can do in an assembly-line manner.”

The pieces include realisticlooking eyes created through a painstaking multi-step process, skin imperfections and hair and even five-o’clock shadow implanted strand-by-strand.

Special effects company Penny was set on his current path while working for a special effects company that catered to Hollywood movies. He was tasked with sculpting character masks and makeup for films such as Snow Falling on Cedars and K-19: The Widowmaker.

While many of the sculptures in Re Figured are realistic, others are intentionally stretched or distorted and play with perspective and colour.

“Some of the pieces do affect (viewers) on a physical level,” Penny said. “Some are challenging and

The exhibit also includes sculptures of the artist himself as both a younger and older version of himself. As much as the entire exhibit delves into issues of image, self-image and identity, those pieces were particularly personal for Penny.

“When you imagine your history and your projected history, you can’t help think about your own mortality,” he said.

Re Figured is currently on display at the AGO until Jan. 6, and Penny will be featured as the inaugural artist featured in the Art Gallery’s 1st Thursdays events, which will partner visual arts with live music and include pop-up bars and interactive arts activities.
