Fresh, new look for the paper You may have noticed a fresh look on top of your Parkdale Villager today. It’s part of our affirmation that community comes first. In the past, you may have noticed the key word in our flag – or masthead as we call it – was The Villager. Now, the key word is Parkdale. As well, you’ll note the colourful nature of the flag. “But the newspaper’s flag – or masthead – is only that, a graphic presentation. What really counts is the job we do covering the neighbourhoods of your community,” said Editor-in-Chief Peter Haggert. As always, we invite your feedback. MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Randy Blake, a resident of South Parkdale, took brush to bench and is painting a landscape scene on a picnic table at Mazaryk Park to counter the graffiti that was appearing there.
Artist turning the picnic tables on graffiti ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The surface of a picnic table is a canvas of a different kind – but for artist Randy Blake, the space isn’t just a place to paint but an opportunity to improve his local park. Blake has been spending hours painting a large picnic table in Masaryk Park, outside the Masaryk Cowan Recreation Centre in South Parkdale. When asked why, he said simply that the effort is made because he cares about his com-
munity, the park and the people who use it. “I’m a new artist and I like getting involved in the community. I like talking to people,” he said. “I just care for people.” Blake is relatively new to painting. He started dabbling in the art at the Parkdale Neighbourhood Church at a weekly drop-in arts and crafts workshop last summer. “That is where I started doing art, I started hanging out there,” he explained. “They provided canvases and paints and crayon. of stuff.” He started to branch off from there, painting canvases at home and in the park. Blake enjoys helping out around the HOPE Garden, run in the park by Greenest City. He has been involved with the community garden since 2010. “I have friends here and it got me out doing something other than (physiotherapy),” said Blake who explained he sustained a back injury in an accident in 2007 so he is unable to work. Tinkering around in the @ParkdaleLiberty
garden is a good way for him to stay active and social, he said. “I like being around people and socializing with people,” Blake said. Outside of the HOPE garden gate is a picnic bench used by gardeners to take a break and during Greenest City potluck dinners. Blake noticed the picnic table was being used as a place for people to write rude comments, swear words and inappropriate crude drawings. >>>BLAKE, page 13
The Friends of High Park Zoo is hosting a Peacock Gala and Silent Auction on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Sunnyside Pavilion on the lake shore. The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. and includes a buffet dinner and entertainment. The peacock was chosen as the theme because it is a symbol of rejuvenation. Friends of High Park Zoo has moved from rescue mode to garnering support so the zoo can stay open for another 120 years. Residents of Toronto and beyond rallied to raise enough money to keep the zoo open until August 2013 – and these funds don’t include the $50,000 donation by the Honey Family Foundation, said Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette. Friends of High Park Zoo are in the midst of collecting donations for the auction. Tickets for the gala are $100 or $750 for a table of eight. pened to the public on May 22, 1971, Ontario Place was closed February of this year with plans for revitalization after over 40 years entertaining families from across the province, country and world. Curator Nathan Storring saw the current circumstances as an opportunity to explore the site’s beginnings in an exhibit titled, Your Ontario Place. “Well essentially, when Ontario Place was first closed earlier this year, we decided that we really wanted to put together an exhibition that reconstructed Ontario Place – how it was when it opened – because it’s changed so much over the years,” said Storring, 24. Adorning brick walls in the loftstyle wood-beamed Urbanspace Gallery (401 Richmond St.), are poster boards detailing the original site’s main attractions and the creators behind them – those who Storring describes as, longforgotten heroes in a period of optimism.

“So I think that these people, these sort of protagonists, these heroes, are really worth looking at again, and I’m really hoping that moving forward we’ll be able to find that same sort of talent and daring for Ontario Place again,” he said. The exhibit holds the original architectural model of the grounds, designed by architect Eberhard Zeidler. Zeidler was also responsible for one of Storring’s favourite parts of the site, the Pods, or the rooms appearing to be suspended above the water. “They were actually designed to basically hold almost anything,” said Storring. “They’re huge spaces that can be sort of chopped up in various ways, you can have glass or steel on them, so they can have light or they can be complete darkness.” Other highlighted activities from the original site include the Children’s Village, the Forum, which was controversially replaced by the Molson Amphitheatre, and the Cinesphere, the world’s first permanent IMAX theatre. Kathleen Byres dances students across Dufferin Street, near Dundas Street West ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com
A
s students readied their backpacks and supplies, Kathleen Byres was clearing her iPod and creating her playlist for back to school. Byres is known in the west end of downtown Toronto as the dancing crossing guard. Tuesday morning, Sept. 4, marked Byres’ ninth school year as a crossing guard on Dufferin Street, south of Dundas Street West. With a lightweight portable iPod docking station slung across her shoulder, Byres shimmies and shuffles to the centre of the crosswalk, raises a stop sign in one hand and makes a peace sign with the other. “I love dancing and you need to stay active,” Byres said with a laugh.
“And I just love music.” Her play lists vary from pop, rap, rhythm and blues and folk music. It often depends on her mood. On rainy mornings she might tone it down a bit. She also creates play lists for special occasions including Halloween and Christmas. “I get recommendations and requests from the parents and the kids,” Byres said. “I like to play songs they like as well as what I like.” It’s clear her moves brighten up many people’s days as Byres and her dancing were met with plenty of smiles and waves and the occasional honk from a car horn on the first day of school. Byres was a certified fitness instructor and said when she took up her post as a crossing guard, the

Share views on riding changes T
oronto residents will be impacted in a number of ways if proposed changes are made to federal riding boundaries within the city. The changes usually come about every 10 years to reflect shifts in population and ensure each riding serves an approximately equal number of voters across a particular province. What that means for Toronto is an increase from the current 23 ridings (one of which crossed the municipal border of Toronto our view and Durham Region) to 25 ridings, all of which would be New boundaries contained within Toronto. The boundary changes mean more will see Canada’s Parliament increase in size by 30 seats to power in Toronto 338. Fifteen of those proposed seats are in Ontario, which means the provincial Legislature will increase by that number as well. Torontonians need to be aware, though, that these changes reflect the continuing growth taking place in the 905 regions surrounding our city. While Toronto essentially gains two seats, the 905 will see an increase of nine. The Hamilton and Barrie areas also each gain a new seat. Federally and provincially, the gain to Toronto’s influence is tiny – but combined with our neighbours in the 905, the Greater Toronto Area’s power has grown substantially. This is hugely important for our city in areas such as transit and economic development. What is needed is a willingness for federal and provincial representatives to work together for the good of the entire GTA, not just the communities that elected them. Also of interest for Toronto residents is the impact the changes could have on Toronto Council. Redistribution would create a scenario in which Toronto Council could increase from 44 members to 50. Whether that will happen ultimately lies with the province, but the justification is there based on the number of proposed ridings. What is most needed now is feedback from Torontonians. Residents in southeast Scarborough must surely be pleased that they will not have to share their MP and MPP with Pickering; and North York residents should feel they will have a stronger voice with the addition of another riding – Don Valley North. North Toronto residents should also feel an increase in their voting power with redistribution creating a Mount Pleasant riding. Public hearings on the plans are set for Nov. 14 at the North York Civic Centre and Nov. 15 at Metro Hall. Also, contact your MP and share your views. To the editor: If you are going to a garage sale, don’t steal from the people who are hosting it. I have had jewelry stolen at my garage sale and we are getting to a point where we are not going to have them any more if people are going to steal from us. Ask to purchase the item for less or don’t buy it, but don’t steal from a garage sale. People are trying to make a bit of cash with their stuff they are already getting rid of at a great price. You wouldn’t lie us to go to your garage sale or house and steal your stuff, so don’t do it to others. If you are that hard up for something, go on welfare. Remember, it is still a crime stealing from a garage sale. Police can be involved. Dorothy Hicks
Chicago’s waterfront a prime example for Toronto’s port lands I t was about a year ago this week, that Doug Ford started talking about Ferris wheels and monorails and gigantic shopping malls for Toronto’s port lands. It didn’t go well for him or that plan — but a year later, after having spent a few days in the Etobicoke North Councillor’s favourite town, Chicago, I can see how he got worked up about it. Chicago is world-famous for many things — the deepness of its pizza, its intricate history of crime and corruption, its fantastic architecture — but for a visitor staying in a downtown hotel, I have to say: nothing beats its waterfront. Jogging and biking trails wend up the river and along the waterfront for miles. There are marinas and parks and an aquarium. There is even a giant Ferris wheel, and yes, the view from the top of it is spectacular. Councillor Ford’s family
THE CITY
david nickle
business takes him to Chicago frequently; and it’s not hard to see how flitting between that place and the rust-belt splendour of much of Toronto’s waterfront could make a fellow impatient. Next week, Doug’s brother Mayor Rob Ford will be looking at the plan that emerged from the wreckage of the dream of quick commercialization of the port lands. Council asked for it last year — a revised plan to see exactly what the city and the development industry could do to actually make something of its waterfront. It’s not a job for the impatient. While there’s great
potential for development in the port lands — there are a total of 900 acres of land ripe for the picking — very little can be developed without some very major infrastructure. In total, the consultants hired on to look at the area estimated it will take $1.9 billion in infrastructure improvement to make the lands worth anything in terms of development. When asked, developers said even if the city sold them the whole thing for $1, they wouldn’t be able to build. As local councillor Paula Fletcher pointed out Tuesday, even Ford’s Ferris wheel wouldn’t have held its ground without $61 million in flood control work. Building anywhere in the port lands is going to take a long view. The $1.9 billion is only addressing development north of the shipping channel; the lands to the south of the channel are either leased to businesses that are likely to be
needed there for awhile. The northern development is going to take a colossal buy-in from the developers and some public-sector involvement too. It could literally take generations to see the whole thing built out. That’s not necessarily a discouraging thing; Chicago’s waterfront today is after all the culmination of a plan more than a century old, using land given for public use along the lake. The battles for a public waterfront were mostly fought in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, just as Toronto’s battles were waged in the late 20th century and continue in the 21st. Which is to say, we’ll get there eventually. There is precedent. n David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Run For the Earth hosts parade Sunday ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com When talking about environment issues, Dr. Tushar Mehta says it all comes down to consumption. “When it comes to the environment people really don’t focus on the elephant in the room, and that is that we really do consume too much,” Mehta said. Now Mehta and his cohorts have started an organization which aims to change the dialogue when it comes to consumption. Run For the Earth is a new environmental organization that focuses on over consumption as the root cause of all environmental issues. The group’s core message is lifestyle change is needed if there are to be real solutions to the world’s environmental issues. “What I want to do with this organization is help people change the dialogue,” he said. “When we talk about the environment we are talking about consumption.”

Mehta started the Run for the Earth organization in the spring, driven by his interested in over consumption. “Environmental, ethical, social and human rights issues really are more tied together than people realize,” he said. “I am interested in all these things together.” Run For the Earth has a website and a team of about 10 volunteers who come from all different backgrounds, but Mehta said anyone with an interest in deeper environmental issues is welcome to
join them. The organization will host their premier event, a parade, on Sunday, beginning at 9:45 a.m. at Trinity Bellwoods Park and winding its way down Queen Street West and down University Avenue to the 28th Annual Vegetarian Food Festival at Habourfront Centre. Even though the organization is called Run for the Earth, the event really is a parade where people can walk, run, bike and bring strollers. All are encouraged to wear costumes with the stipulation they are made of materials people already own, borrow, salvage or rent as a means of consuming nothing new. Registration is $5, or free for children and adults who cannot afford the fee. Visit www.runfortheearth.org to register or for more information. “People can register online or on Facebook, or on the day. We just want them to join us,” he said.
West Nile virus highest in decade Toronto Public Health is reporting the highest number of reported human West Nile virus ( WNV ) cases in the city in the past decade, and expects the number to rise in coming weeks, according to a release issued Aug. 30. In 2002 and 2003 Toronto Public Health reported 163 and 44 cases, respectively. Toronto Public Health continues to take proactive measures to reduce WNV risk: Toronto Public Health has 43 mosquito traps around the city and tests mosquitoes for WNV on a weekly basis. Toronto Public Health has completed its fourth round of larviciding in 120,000 catch basins around Toronto to reduce the mosquito population. For prevention tips visit www.toronto.ca/health/westnile/wnv_factsheet_precautions2008.htm; facts on WNV can be found at www.toronto. ca/health/westnile/wnv_factsheet_generalinfo.htm
Take the chaos out of breakfast According to Breakfast Clubs of Canada, studies show that kids who eat a healthy, balanced breakfast are more interested in school, are better able to concentrate, and have stronger social skills than those who don't. Here are some easy tips to get kids pumped about breakfast: • Make breakfast a family affair: The easiest way to encourage kids to eat a healthy breakfast is for parents to do the same. Set time aside each morning to sit down and eat as a family. Kids
are much more likely to imitate the behaviours they observe. • Get the kids involved: Let the kids contribute to menu selection to make them feel invested in breakfast. Big families can plan a weekly schedule that allows each child to participate on a given day. This approach also helps families plan ahead (and even prepare the night before), making breakfast more enjoyable in the morning. • Think outside the plate: Breakfast smoothies are an easy way
to pack a nutritious punch. Here's an easy one using ingredients that most families have in their kitchen: put 2 cups of orange juice, ½ cup of strawberry yoghurt, 5-6 whole strawberries, a peeled banana and 5 ice cubes in a blender. Blend until smooth. Customize the consistency by adding more or less of any of the ingredients or swap the strawberries for raspberries, depending on preference. It's that easy. – www.newscanada.com

Transit
TTC riders still in the dark for Internet service
Request for proposal issued to telecommunications companies RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Hong Kong’s had it since 2007. New York City, London and Paris have all recently introduced it. But when it comes to wireless Internet, it’s unclear when Torontonians will join their international counterparts surfing the ‘net, updating social media statuses or engaging in other online activities while on public transit. GO Transit and TTC say they’re prioritizing implementation of Wi-Fi. But spokespersons for both transit agencies were unable to say when exactly that will be. Malon Edwards of Metrolinx, the provincial Crown agency tasked with running GO, said Wi-Fi is a priority of the transit authority’s passenger charter, which promises riders a “comfortable travel experience.” He said a rollout is tenta-

tively scheduled for sometime in 2013, but Wi-Fi planning is still in the early stages. “There is no firm date for implementation,” said Edwards on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Meanwhile the TTC, which has discussed since 2010 installing a wireless network to allow phone and Internet
use in the subway, plans to provide an update during a board meeting sometime in the fall, said Jessica Martin. “There hasn’t been much movement,” said Martin, who works in corporate communications for TTC. “We have limited info at the moment.” What is known, according
to a May report presented to the TTC board, is a request for proposal (RFP) was issued in May by the TTC for three pre-qualified telecommunications companies: Bell Mobility, Broadcast Australia and ExteNet Systems, based in Chicago. The winning bidder will be responsible for designing and installing a wireless network to work in TTC subway stations and platforms, but not tunnels. The provider would cover the estimated $50-million installation cost, in addition to an annual fee to cover operational costs. To satisfy a requirem e n t o f t h e Ca n a d i a n Radio-Television Telecommunication Commission (CRTC) customers of all available cellular carriers would have equal access to the network, no matter which company is ultimately chosen as the wireless provider. Questions remain as to whether the wireless service will require users to pay for access or whether it will be offered at no extra cost beyond fare entry to the subway. Offering a free Wi-Fi service that requires users to watch ads in exchange for access is growing increasingly popular, with global spending on Internet advertising rising more than 30 per cent in the last three years according to a recent report by forecaster
ZenithOptimedia. Over the summer, New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority is offering free Wi-Fi until Sept. 7 at six subway stations located in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan, with plans to expand the service to 30 more stations by the end of the year. London’s Underground introduced Wi-Fi to 80 tube stations during the Summer Olympic Games at no cost to users. The Paris Metro has also introduced a limited service. Whether free or not, Mihnea Stoian believes in an age of smart phones and tablet computers that it is unacceptable Toronto transit vehicles are not providing wireless connections. “I would say that not having Wi-Fi is out of step as to what we as a society expect,” said Stoian, co-founder of the transit advocacy group Commuters United, along with Nilaye Thakrar. While Stoian praised both TTC and GO for improving how it updates commuters on service changes, he said it was frustrating not to be able to enjoy the same amenities transit riders in other parts of the world take for granted. “We can’t always be playing catch-up if we want to have a world-class transit system like in Asia or Europe,” he said last week.

Playlist project lists favs by subway station RAHUL GUPTA @TOinTransit It’s been tough, but music mapmaker Meagan Perry has managed not to judge TTC subway riders by the contents of their iPods. Perry is the creator of The Stationary Groove Toronto Subway Playlist Project, an online interactive subway map which allows users to view and download playlists of the most popular songs, station by TTC station, based on Perry’s canvassing of transit commuters. For 120 hours, the equivalent of three full work weeks, the Leslieville resident traveled to every subway station on the Bloor-Danforth and Yonge-University-Spadina lines spending up to two hours approaching headphonewearing commuters and asking them what they were listening to. To her surprise, the vast majority of people Perry approached were forthcoming about their choices, Top tracks/artists listened to by TTC subway riders according to www.StationaryGroove. com 1. Drake (30 songs) 2. Kanye West (13 songs) 3. Chris Brown (11 songs) 4. Rihanna + Adele (9 songs each) 5. Beyonce and Jay-Z (5 songs each) 6. Eminem and Lil Wayne (4 songs each) 7. Blake hopes to continue painting
LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com
>>>from page 1 So he decided to use it as a canvas of a different kind, one for painting a landscape scene. He asked the staff at Greenest City and they told him to go ahead. He started working on the bench in early August. It was a project to both cover the graffiti as well as give him something to do. Blake said he hopes it will encourage people to take more pride in the downtown west end park. This is his largest work to date and he said he hopes to have it completed by the end of September. He can’t sit for more than a couple of hours, but he has slowly been working away at his painting on the bench. As he paints, Blake said he likes to think about what he could paint next. He wants to take a brush to the shed that houses the wading pool supplies or even paint the wading pool floor. “There should be starfish
Inaugural production Sept. 11 with proceeds to charity A trio of artistic women are set to open an independent theatre company in the Dundas and Bloor Street West streets area this fall. Co-artistic directors Sophie Ann Rooney and Angela Besharah along with associate producer Julie Brar will bring their first production to the new Sterling Studio Theatre beginning Tuesday, Sept. 11. Rooney will direct John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea with proceeds going to a 9/11 charity. “I’m very excited about our new theatre – we get the keys tonight,” said Brar on Aug. 15, adding a fundraising launch party will take place Tuesday, Sept. 4. Brar and Besharah met at a class Rooney was teaching in January. The three women, says Brar, are on the same wavelength.
‘We are hoping to give other actors, writers and producers a chance to launch their projects as well.’ ~ Julie Brar, associate producer “We are hoping to give other actors, writers and producers a chance to launch their projects as well. We want to provide a space to rent out to other theatre companies who need a venue to stage their work; to create a space for the artistic community to support each other.” The three want to reach out to not only thespians, but to aspiring comedians and other performers. “The idea is just to be creative,” said Brar. Meanwhile, Rooney is anxious to teach classes in her
own space. “I’m excited to give Toronto audiences something new and different,” she said in a statement. “I love acting and I’ve always loved theatre, I love film. That’s why I do what I do,” said the acting coach and director. Launching a new theatre adds to the tapestry of Toronto’s “vibrant” arts scene, said Brar, whose credits include Fringe, Lost Girl, and Smallville. ACTING FIRST LOVE While acting is her first love, Brar is looking forward to branching out into writing and producing. Raised in Winnipeg, Brar moved to California to study at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Later, she relocated to Vancouver where she discovered the city has little independent theatre. Her next stop was Toronto, just over a year ago, and immediately fell in love with the art scene.

“There is such great theatre in this city,” said Brar. “There’s something so beautiful about an actor on stage with an audience – it’s a beautiful experience. We like telling stories as human beings. We’ve been doing it since the dawn of time.” Besharah, Brar and Rooney plan to premiere shows from countries around the world as well as bringing new and older Canadian plays to the stage. Previewing Sept. 11 with a Sept. 12 to 22 run, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea stars actors Drew Nelson (Flashpoint, Rookie Blue and Supernatural) as Danny and Kerri Smith (Jesse Stone, Flashpoint and Murdoch Mysteries) as Roberta. Both Nelson and Smith have also taken one of Rooney’s acting classes. If you would like further details about the theatre and its upcoming shows, visit www.sterlingstudiotheatre. com

and dolphins and mermaids painted there,” Blake said. “I would like to organize and have people help me do it.” Beyond that, Blake said, he would love to paint picnic tables in other parts throughout the city. “I would like to do the whole city of Toronto,” he said. “Young, old, even some people that I know that have marked (graffiti on) the bench in the past, have commented that it is beautiful and I just say ‘I hope it stays this way.’,” Blake said. The picnic table has not been a victim of any graffiti since Blake started the painting, he said. Originally from Oshawa, Blake lives in South Parkdale, but has travelled all over the country, including British Columbia, where Blake said he gets many of his ideas for paintings from. “The mountains and the forest, rolling hills and rivers,” Blake said. “When I finish it I will name it.”
