WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NEW NAMES
Take Back the Night Saturday in Parkdale The Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/ Multicultural Women Against Rape hosts the 32nd annual Take Back the Night protest and march Saturday at Masaryk-Cowan Community Recreation Centre in Parkdale. Every year, the Take Back the Night protest and march occurs in a different Toronto community. In 2012, the decision was made to hold the event in Parkdale, partly because of the theme Un-Occupying Our Minds, Healing Ourselves. The theme speaks to the experiences of survivors of sexual violence in the mental health system, the “medicalization” of experiences, survivorship, the stigma attached to diagnosis and the use of mental health treatments such as drug therapies, electroshock and psychiatric incarceration.
ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Although community members who attended a Monday meeting about a proposed condo on Sorauren Avenue in Roncesvalles Village repeatedly expressed concern about the height, architect Peter Clewes said when a building is done well, it adds to a neighbourhood. “I think cities are organisms that change and grow and that is what makes cities so interesting,” Clewes said. “Density adds to community, it brings people into the community.” Clewes is noted for designs like SP!RE, a highrise condominium building at 70 Adelaide St. E. at Church Street downtown. There were more than 100 neighbours in attendance, which area Councillor Gord Perks said wasn’t surprising. “Ward 14 is a very sophisticated neighbourhood and we want to make sure the design is a good one,” Perks said following the meeting. Perks hosted the community consultation with the architects and developer of the property at 383 Sorauren Ave. in advance of their filing an application for a zoning bylaw amendment and site plan application with the city. This meeting was not a mandatory part of the process. “This is early days as an application has not been made, but we are excited to walk you through what we have planned for the site,” said Cynthia MacDougal, the lawyer for >>>AT, page 13

CELEBRATION: Long time Little Italy resident Giuseppe Simonetta, accompanied by wife Maria, pulled back the veil to reveal the laneway sign that now bares his name. Simonetta is an active member of the neighbourhood. He has been involved in projects including the creation of the Canadian Italian Family Assistance Association and the Good Friday Procession. The ceremony was held at the laneway near Clinton and College streets in Toronto’s Ward 19. Area Councillor Mike Layton and representatives from the community as well as Simonetta and some family members attended.

Rally seeks to quash war resister’s deportation ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com “I hope we get to stay,” Christian Rivera, son of U.S. war resister Kimberly Rivera who has been ordered to leave Canada by Sept. 20 or face forceful removal, said excitedly into the microphone before protesters gathered inside the basement of Parkdale United Church and spilling out onto the lawn outside. The War Resisters Support Campaign organized the Sept. 5 “emergency rally”, which was attended by area politicians, representatives from faith groups, Amnesty International, fellow war resisters and supporters. Rivera is a former U.S. soldier who sought asylum in Canada after refusing to re-deploy to Iraq in 2007. She has lived in Parkdale for the past five years with her husband and four children, two of whom were born in Canada. Rivera is active in the community, volunteering with the Sketch community garden and supporting local churches with their meal programs. “I believe that as long as I have the support of my community...it’s very possible that I will be accepted with a humanitarian and compas-

sion application,” Rivera said at the rally to support her and her family. “Then we can all celebrate and have an even bigger block party.” Shelley Melanson, from the office of Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash, read a statement on Nash’s behalf. ‘Unjust wars’ “Canadians have always given refuge to people fleeing unjust wars,” the statement said. “It’s part of our values and our history as a country. Kimberly Rivera and her family should be allowed to stay.”
Activist and retired Anglican bishop Desmond Tutu penned a statement regarding what he called “the urgent situation of Kimberly Rivera and her family”. “Please add my voice to those who are speaking out to support the war resisters and urge that they be allowed to stay in Canada,” Tutu’s statement read. “These are people of courage, they are people of peace and they should be granted asylum.” Councillor Gord Perks encouraged those in attendance to spread the message to their friends, family, neighbours and co-workers to add
their voices to those fighting for the Rivera family. Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo said the community wants Rivera to stay. ‘We won’t stand for it’ “We won’t stand for it. We won’t let you go Kim,” said DiNovo to applause. Following the speeches, the group marched from the church to the Parkdale Library carrying banners and chanting, “War resisters welcome here”. They also gathered names on a petition requesting the
Rivera family be allowed to stay in Canada. Rivera has asked the government to defer her removal pending the outcome of her 2009 application to stay on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. On Friday, Sept. 14 from 4:30 to 6 p.m., there is a Canada-wide day of petitioning planned with three locations in Toronto including Dunn Avenue in Parkdale. Then on Wednesday, Sept. 19, there will be a peaceful demonstration to protest the deportation of the Rivera family at the Federal Court Building at 180 Queen St. W.

ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com It was coincidence that Shawna Robinson and Natalie Sydoruk were wearing the same black tunic, their own design with a mesh cutout and fringe detail on the back, when they arrived to work at their studio space in The Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) last week. But, the fashion slip, in a way, speaks to why this young design partnership has worked, so much so that their clothing line LABEL was one of 15 of Canada’s top designers chosen for the White Cashmere Collection competition. “We both have a very similar aesthetic,” Robinson said. “We both want the same things out of the line.” The pair met while working retail together in 2007 and that is where they started musing about the idea of starting a clothing line. Sydoruk has a degree in design from Ryerson and has worked in various capacities in the fashion industry, from retail, wardrobe in films to modeling. She is also a DJ and spins every Thursday at Bymark Restaurant downtown. Sydoruk, 33, splits her time between living in the Brockton Triangle and at her father’s home on Roncesvalles Avenue, where he ran a dental practice for many years. Robinson, 31, grew up in a small town in the Kawartha Lakes and studied politics and art history at Western University in London Ontario. She now lives at College and Bathurst and has worked as a freelance wardrobe stylist. The women thought their

skills complemented each other and their shared vision for the clothing line made them a perfect pair. With out putting together any kind of business plan or real objectives, they said they just started making stuff. ‘Interest and passion’ “It was an interesting way to get into things,” Robinson said. “But I think it was positive because it was based on interest and passion and not
money making per se.” They both have input in the designs and from there Sydoruk creates and executes the patterns and Robinson works in the marketing and business side of things. “The best way to say it is we divide and concur,” Robinson said. “And of course we consult each other along the way because we are partners.” They started LABEL in 2009 and have done five collections in their partnership, including spring/summer of 2013.
They have been working at TFI, a non-profit studio dedicated to supporting and nurturing small business entrepreneurs located at Exhibition Place, for nearly three years. “We have really enjoyed it here,” Sydoruk said. “It is a great place to get your business started. You have a lot of access to mentors and different people who can answer your questions.” Their clothes are essentials, building blocks for
the modern woman’s wardrobe. “Another thing that defines us is comfort and wearability,” Robinson said. “We make things that fit easily and you feel really good in.” They use a lot of natural fibres and knits, which also gives them a sustainable angle to their business. “We like pieces that someone can take and make it look completely different,” she said. “For people with different
styles, they can take their own interpretation of the piece.” With the White Cashmere Collection, the designers must work entirely with bathroom tissue. T h e i r t h e m e i s “o l d Hollywood glamour” – a fun party dress made of reinforced bathroom tissue. It is light and feminine, but also something people can envision wearing, they said. This year’s White Cashmere Collection débuts at a runway show on Sept. 19. It will feature evening attire, cocktail dresses, accessories and children’s wear and shoes. Following the runway debut of the designs, and through to the end of October, there will be a facebook page set up for fans to vote for their favourite design. The winner will have up to $10,000 donated in their name to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. LABEL clothing is available at three stores in Toronto including Lost and Found on Dundas West, Home Grown Boutique in Yorkville and Model Citizen in Kensington Market as well as through their website http://seenolabel.com/
Celebrity Parkdale cook-off follows AGM Can Parkdale be a place for foodies of all income levels? On Sept. 19, three of Parkdale’s top chefs will prove it can at the Parkdale Eats Cookoff. Chefs from Parts & Labour, Barque and Local Kitchen will create an affordable and tasty meal for a family of four on a budget of $10 or less. Adding to the challenge, all of the food, spices and seasonings they use must be purchased in Parkdale. One last twist is that the
chefs will be preparing the meals using only toaster ovens, hot plates, microwaves and kettles. Cook-off follows AGM The cook-off takes place at 7 p.m. following the annual general meeting of the Parkdale Community Health Centre, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W. Terry Fox Run: sustain a legacy T
here’s a lesson for volunteer organizations to observe when it comes to the Terry Fox Run. The event has grown enormously over its 32 years and is now a worldwide undertaking – one that even goes beyond the traditional Sunday run in multiple locales. For example, there’s now a separate National School Run Day. There’s also an intriguing new initiative making its debut this year. Canadian university students are being urged to get involved with Terry’s Cause on Campus. Among its goals is “to inspire future generations with Terry’s story of courage, selflessness and hope.” So far, our view nine events are confirmed, including one in Toronto. You can honour Students at University of Toronto will participate in a run the memory of bringing students from all three of its campus locations (down- Canadian hero town Toronto, Mississauga, Scarborough) to its Scarborough campus. While most of the university events are taking place Sunday, Toronto’s is scheduled for Oct. 3. It’s a fitting expansion for a number of reasons. Terry Fox was a first-year student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in his right leg being amputated above the knee. The connection of this event to a university campus is an obvious one. Just as importantly, by directly engaging university students – our leaders of tomorrow – Terry Fox Run organizers are making a shrewd, sustainable investment in ensuring the continuation of Fox’s legacy. It also signals renewal. Many organizations run the risk of becoming irrelevant once the generation that created those organizations passes on. It’s a sad, but undeniable reality; volunteer organizations need to consider a form of succession planning if they hope to be sustainable. And there’s reason to hope. Our young people do volunteer. In a Statistics Canada report released earlier this year, titled Caring Canadians, Involved Canadians, nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians between the ages of 15 and 24 volunteered at least once in the previous 12 months. It’s the highest volunteer rate of the six age groups cited in the survey, and well above the provincial rate of 47.7 per cent. Participating in the Terry Fox Run is an excellent way to honour the memory of a bonafide Canadian hero. It always has been. It’s encouraging to see that growth continue and that investments are being made to ensure the continuation of Fox’s legacy. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Recently, the Federal Court of Canada said it is legal for a blogger to quote and link to an online news article in a post. So if you copy a news article headline and summary – with a link to the full version – and post it to your blog or website, you haven’t violated Canada’s online copyright laws. Online content costs owners time, resources and money to create and publish. A blogger or web publisher should still follow a few basic rules when using other’s content. At the very least, the date, name of publication and title (with a link) should be included in the body of a blog post. A direct quote should include a full citation to it at the bottom of a blogger’s article. A Google Internet search makes it easy to find an image to embed within a blog post. But if an image or logo is trademarked, a blog owner should obtain permission from its owner before including it in their own blog article. Tom Wolfer
Ford’s political career will survive court case Rob Ford was never going to get out of that courtroom unscathed, and by the time Clayton Ruby was finished with him on the stand last Wednesday, the mayor of Toronto was pretty much on the ropes. At the end of it, our mayor emerged as a seemingly careless steward of the city, wilfully ignorant of the laws he had sworn to uphold, a passionate defender of the social benefits of high school football but disinterested in almost everything else. It’s not a surprise. If Ruby had been permitted to by Judge Charles Hackland, he might have been able to introduce a laundry list of stories with which we are all familiar regarding Ford’s behaviour. Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner successfully argued that questioning on those matters would do

more than embarrass the mayor. It might also have embarrassed a great many voters – because let’s face it: no one who voted for him could say they weren’t told exactly the kind of guy Ford was. Now, he is facing the real prospect of losing the job to which he was elected. He is accused of contravening the Ontario Municipal Conflict of Interest Act when he spoke and voted on the floor of council in February on a matter in which he had a financial interest: a requirement by Toronto Council
that he repay $3,150 to 11 lobbyists who donated to his football charity while he was a councillor. Unless Hackland is persuaded by Lenczner’s suite of finely honed legal arguments – council had no authority to order the repayment; the mayor made an error in judgement in good faith; Ford’s interpretation of the Conflict of Interest Act (which he admitted to never having read) is correct – he will have little choice but to remove the mayor from office. Of course, there will be another election for the mayor should that happen. If the sentence comes down without also imposing a restriction preventing him from running, it could be that Ford becomes a candidate in the byelection called to replace him. It could be that he would
prevail in such a byelection on the well-worn narrative of victimhood: Rob Ford, the candidate who was removed from elected office by a judge for the crime of helping schools in poor neighbourhoods have football teams. If the judge imposes restrictions, count on him running again in the first election he can. And give him good odds of winning that one. Because the time has come to face facts: when it comes to Rob Ford, there is a large constituency of voters who don’t want to face facts when it comes to their candidate. Their love appears to be unconditional. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall columnist. Contact him at dnickle@insidetoronto. com

Last year more than 300,000 people flooded onto Roncesvalles Avenue for the annual Polish Festival and organizers are hoping to break that record with the 2012 edition. “I look forward to seeing a whole bunch of people on the street having a good time,” said Keith Denning, coordinator of the Roncesvalles Village Business Improvement Area, which organizes the festival. The Roncesvalles Polish Festival, North America’s largest celebration of Polish culture, takes place Saturday and Sunday.
Now in its seventh year, the festival offers local and international music, entertainment on six stages, cuisine from Roncesvalles’ restaurants including Polish fare such as pierogi, kielbasa, bigos and cabbage rolls. New this year is the dedicated Polish Folklore stage at the Polish Credit Union, which will host an endless show of colourful costumes and Polish song and dance. Friday evening there will be an opening party featuring Pennsylvania’s Polka Family Band from 8 p.m. to midnight and the ‘Dance Under The Stars’ polka party Saturday
night. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The official opening ceremonies are at 1:30 at the stage at Roncesvalles and Wright avenues. ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The Parkdale Community Development Group (PCDG) is set to fold all of its operations into the Queen West Art Crawl (QWAC), making the art show and sale the group’s sole focus. “We are shutting down the business of the Parkdale Community Development Group by the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean we are going out of existence,” said Cindy Goldrick, the director of PCDG. “What that means is we are focusing on the brand that we built that has the most name recognition, which is the Queen West Art Crawl.” PCDG began in 1996 under the moniker Parkdale Liberty Economic Development Corporation (PLEDC) when Parkdale was a different place than it is today, said Phil Anderson, the director of Gallery 1313 in Parkdale and one of the founding members of PLEDC. “The neighbourhood was going through some transition, but it was very slow,” Anderson said. “The idea was to help foster a healthy community.” The group’s mission was to revitalize the Village of Parkdale and Liberty District, Anderson explained. ‘there were issues’ “There were issues with street safety, lighting and we wanted to get more street traffic to make sure residents felt comfortable (and) people from outside would feel comfortable coming in to shop,” Anderson said. “And try to change some of the negative imagery that (Parkdale) was a rough area people should be wary of.” PLEDC had a number of functions such as new business support, communitybased economic initiatives, streetscaping, youth support and communications. During the years, the organization broadened its scope of work and changed its name to the Parkdale Community Development Group (PCDG). In 2008, the organization acquired the Queen West Art Crawl (QWAC) from Artscape and becoming PCDG’s flagship event. Goldrick said the decision to concentrate on QWAC is a

employment program. QWAC received charitable status in December and Goldrick said the path the organization needed to take was clear. She said folding PCDG into QWAC would open many fundraising and sponsorship doors under that charitable status. It would also give the organization an opportunity to grow beyond Parkdale. “Because the Queen West Art Crawl is no longer tethered to the Parkdale Community Development Group, it opens it up so we don’t have to draw our board members from the community alone,” Goldrick said. “It opens us up to more influence, more opportunity, more connections.” Looking ahead, she said QWAC would like to create a storefront to give artists a profile year round. Also the PCDG’s monthly bazaar sales will be re-branded to fall in line with QWAC. Goldrick said she doesn’t anticipate any hole being left by the shift in focus. “There are so many organizations that support people in the community at all different levels,” Goldrick said, adding that recently PCDG’s focus had been almost exclusively on art and artists.
reflection of where the organization has been focusing its efforts in recent years. In the spring, the board of directors decided some of the other PCDG activities, such as its employment program, economic development and other community involvement initiatives, were actually getting in the way of doing what Goldrick said they did best – QWAC. “There are so many agencies in Parkdale that are handling well all of those other concerns that PCDG and PLEDC had been formed years ago to address,” Goldrick said. ‘Another Good Night’ of watching artists at work in Saturday QWAC nightcrawl event ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Painting is inherently a solitary process, but the upcoming event, ‘Another Good Night’, turns that idea completely on its head. “At a basic level, bringing people into the studio while you are creating, is very interesting,” said painter David McKenzie who is also curating the event. “With music and theatre, people are watching something unfold, while when you walk into a gallery and see the painting it is like you see the climax of the movie and then walk out of the theatre.” Presented as part of the Queen West Art Crawl’s Parkdale Nightcrawl on Saturday, Sept. 15, Another Good Night, will feature five Toronto artists engage in a live ‘exaggeration’ of their studio practice in the upstairs room of The Rhino. The Parkdale Nightcrawl offers multiple levels of interaction for artists and patrons at a number of venues in Parkdale between Dufferin Street and Roncesvalles Avenue. ‘Another Good Night’ is a follow up to a project called ‘One Good

“There is a lot of layering and things that if you didn’t understand how to paint you would not understand how it went from blank canvas to where it is,” McKenzie said. “There is a mystification there that I don’t like.” For the viewer, it also adds sen-

10th annual Art Crawl Now in its 10th year, Queen West Art Crawl (QWAC) has grown from a single day art sale in Trinity Bellwoods Park to a weekend full of festivities along Queen Street West from Bathurst Street to Roncesvalles Avenue. In addition to the 256 juryselected artists at the Outdoor Art Show and Sale in Trinity Bellwood’s Park, there will also be crafting for adults through Etsy, an online marketplace for artists, and a Kidzone with crafts and face painting. All weekend, QWAC will present various walks, talks and tours throughout the downtown west end. Although the Parkdale Nightcrawl programming was added to the roster of QWAC events last year, which will feature five Toronto artists engaging in a live ‘exaggeration’ of their studio practice in the upstairs room of The Rhino, Cindy Goldrick, the director of the event, said there are many more venues and a special passport program this year. “We are putting together a passport program for the crawl where for 10 bucks you buy a passport and get it stamped and bring it back to the headquarters outside Gallery 1313 and you will get something back,” Goldrick said. “This is to raise some funds to help offset some of the costs.” For a full roster of events, visit www.queenwestartcrawl.com
timental value to the painting for having watched its creation. McKenzie also participates with Art Battle, live competitive painting events at The Great Hall at Queen Street West and Dovercourt Road. “I’ve noticed through Art Battle that the Queen West community has a really strong interest in live painting,” he said. “A lot of people come out to that event, so I figure (Parkdale) is the perfect place to do this type of thing.” For this event, 100 canvases will be hung throughout the room and the floor will be covered with plastic tarp. From 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. five artists will paint away, filling all the canvases by the end of the night. The audience will be invited to try their hand in painting on an additional 20 evolving creations. In addition to McKenzie, participating artists are Chris Pemberton, Morgan Booth, Jack Cerre and Oscar Figueroa. All of the paintings will be for sale. Close down the cottage with confidence Do you feel that? There's that recognizable chill in the air. Fall's back with its shorter days and changing leaves. It's time again to shut down the cottage for the winter. You spend so much time and money on your family cottage, that it only makes sense to do all you can to protect it. By being as thorough as possible, you'll not only keep out the weather and little critters, but you'll also keep your property insurance costs down by reducing the chance of damage over the winter and any resulting claims. Keep in mind that on average closing your cottage can take up to four weekends. Aim to be finished by the Thanksgiving weekend because the cold and frost tends to arrive earlier in cottage country. Here's a brief check list to help you stay organized: • Take a good look around your entire property. Identify anything that may need an emergency repair before you close for the season and make sure there's time to get it done. A good example is roof repairs because snow and ice over the winter could make the problem much worse. • Animal and weather proof your place. Clean out the gutters and the chimney. Before you leave for the season, be sure to cover the chimney
to keep out the weather and animals. Check for and seal any small openings. Secure and seal all the windows and doors. • Make your cottage burglar-proof. Ultimately, you want to your place as uninteresting as possible. If you have a gate at the entrance of your driveway, chain it up. Tidy up outside, packing up all outdoor furniture and removing any fire hazards. Inside, close your blinds, curtains and/or shutters. • Clean out your kitchen and fridge. Canned food can expand and possibly explode over the winter and other food items can attract mice. Leave your cupboards spotless so that you won't come back to any surprises in the spring. If you'd rather not bring it all the way back to the city, consider throwing an end-of-season party for your neighbours or donate it to a local food-bank. • Turn off the water, electricity and in some cases the natural gas. Be sure to drain the pipes to prevent freezing and cracking. Pouring environmentally friendly non-toxic antifreeze (used in RVs) into your toilets is a good idea if you're unable to drain them completely. • Last but not least — enjoy the winter!

Easy ways to add value to your home When you want to improve the value of your home, get the most out of the money you spend on renovations with a few easy remodeling tips.
by clearing out your storage areas and organizing their contents. Uncluttering your home will instantly make it look bigger and cleaner.
An Updated Kitchen
Window Shutters
Gone are the days of the purely utilitarian kitchen. Today, kitchens require a balance between functionality and personal style. Invest in a new kitchen table that is both serviceable and aesthetically pleasing. Ever wondered what to do with that dining room you never use? A lot of families are doing away with the tradition of having a separate dining room by joining the two rooms. That way you get added space and value in the room that you are using more often.
One of the best ways to add value is at the window. The refreshed polysatin shutters are virtually indistinguishable from finely painted ones – making these shutters an excellent investment choice for your home.
Storage Space A stuffy old attic or basement that hasn’t been cleaned out in years is a waste of valuable space. Start
Modern Bathrooms Just by making a few changes in your bathroom you can create a more attractive and comfortable space, as well as increase the value of your home significantly. Updating simple fixtures such as your faucet and sink, or adding in a bath, can give any outdated bathroom new style.

>>>from page 1 the developer. T h e p ro p e r t y a t 3 8 3 Sorauren Ave. is just south of Dundas Street and immediately to the north of the condo complex known as the Robert Watson Lofts. The proposed redevelopment is for an 11-storey residential building with about 70 one-bedroom condos, 55 one bedrooms plus den, 30 two-bedroom units, two penthouse units and six townhouses.
20 feet higher The building would be 34.4 metres at its highest point, which is about 20 feet higher than the neighbouring Robert Watson Lofts. The building will be set back three or four metres from the property line with the townhomes facing the street. The lobby entrance to the condos will be behind the townhomes and cars would enter the parking garage on
the north side of the building. The developer is Bill Gairdner, who told the audience he had worked on a number of developments in the King West area but this was his first project on his own. Area resident Doug Bennet, who is on the board of the Clean Train Coalition, asked whether the developers had given any consideration to the rail line, which abuts the rear of the parcel of land, and the impacts of increased diesel train traffic on the people who might live there. Clewes said they have been in talks with Metrolinx, that they will have to take air quality into consideration with the building and might have to do things such as tripleglazed windows. Toronto District School Board Trustee Irene Atkinson asked the panel where the families who might move into the building would send their children as area schools are
full. “We are currently in the process of pulling together information about the community services like schools, libraries and community centres,” one of the representatives of the development said.

Other concerns Other residents expressed concerns about parking in the area, shadows the building might cast and the noise and vibration that would come with the 24-month construction. Perks said the developers may also have to consider ensuring the development allows people to work in the area with live/work or light industrial use mixed in. There will be at least one more community meeting pertaining to this development at a later date, after the developers make their application to the city, Perks said.

United Way Toronto campaign
United Way seeking $116 million - and ideas JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com United Way Toronto is looking to Torontonians to share more than their time and money this year. The organization, which funds some 200 health and social service agencies across the city, is also asking residents to share their ideas on how to build a stronger Toronto. Members of many of United Way agencies dropped by Commerce Court last Thursday as United Way Toronto unveiled its latest initiative, Imagine a City, at its annual fundraising campaign launch. Imagine a City calls on people to go online and share ideas they feel will strengthen Toronto. United Way Toronto president and CEO Susan McIsaac will blog regularly at www.imagineacity.ca, as will 10 guest bloggers from various service agencies. “It’s an opportunity for everyone in the community to sign up and share their ideas for how to build a better city,” McIsaac said. “One of the things we’ve realized is that people out there have so many great ideas and we want to hear them.”

Members of local service agencies gather to unveil the $116 million fundraising goal for the United Way’s 2012 fundraising campaign during last week’s launch event.
Guest blogger Kadeem Robin of East Metro Youth Services – one of the United Way’s member agencies – will blog about the importance of positive role models for young people. “Not having a role model when I was younger caused me to seek out other people to fill that role,” he
said. “I first noticed it when I was young and walking in the snow, back when Toronto got a lot of snow. I realized it was easier to walk in the footsteps of someone else.” Robin benefited from East Metro Youth Services’ programs and now hopes to let others know of the impact they can have by being a
positive role model, or simply by supporting the United Way. While the launch of Imagine a City marked a major part of the United Way’s campaign launch, the organization also unveiled its fundraising target for the coming year. United Way Toronto has set a $116 million target, $1 million more
than the amount raised last year. Wilson Yu, programming and personnel director at CultureLink, said United Way funding helps keep his organization afloat. Thanks in part to roughly $150,000 in funding from the United Way, CultureLink provides settlement services for new Canadians with programs ranging from mentorship to job search workshops to language assistance. “The funding they give us is so important in helping us serve newcomers through all our programs,” he said. “We look at this as core funding.” For more information on United Way Toronto and its latest campaign, visit www.unitedwaytoronto. com

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Councillor Adam Vaughan’s move to have the sale of ammunition banned in Toronto was deep-sixed Monday at Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee. The committee didn’t even let the notice of motion get onto the floor. Vaughan had put forward the motion looking into banning the
sale of ammunition in Toronto as a way to combat gun crime in the city. The matter was referred by Toronto Council to the executive committee once it was clear there were no public deputations. The committee deferred the matter indefinitely – effectively removing it from public debate. Vaughan said he wasn’t surprised no one showed up to force the matter or that the committee
decided not to deal with it. “Look, when it comes to issues of public safety this mayor walks away not just from debates, but from action,” he said. SAFER CITY “I believe that limited access to ammunition, limited access to weapons makes the city safer. I’ll continue to advocate for gun control, despite what the federal
government and gun advocates on council are advocating for.” He said members of the public interested in banning ammunition sales shouldn’t be blamed for giving the morning a miss. “I think most people realize when it comes to the executive committee that there are a lot of gun advocates. I think rather than talking until they’re blue in the face, they know where the mayor’s going.” Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday
put it bluntly. “I guess it got shot down and I’m not really sure if there would have been any value in it,” he said. “I don’t think the crooks in Toronto buy their guns at a bullet store or a gun shop. “It’s another one of those situations where somebody is going to put something forward and appear to be doing something about the problem when in fact they’re not.”

ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com St. Clarens Parkette is a small city-run park with a few benches and some dated play equipment, but the Dundas West Business Improvement Area (BIA) thinks it could be much more. “We want to turn it into a little hub of activity,” said Helder Ramos, co-ordinator of the Dundas West BIA. “We think it’s in everyone’s best interest to have a park that is heavily used.” Currently the parkette, at 1717 Dundas St. W., is underused, Ramos said. “Every time I walk by it, I don’t see anyone using it. It isn’t very well used,” he said. “That may have something to do with the design.” But before any plans get underway to transform the park, the BIA wants to hear what the community and surrounding businesses would
like to do there. The BIA will host this brainstorming/re-vitalization meeting Sunday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. at the St. Clarens Parkette. To get the ideas flowing and start the planning off with a bang, the BIA will begin the afternoon by unveiling a new mural, which has been installed in the parkette. “It’s a mural that was put up a couple weeks ago,” Ramos said. Local artist The mural is made out of cut plywood and was designed by local artist José Ortega and sponsored by the City of Toronto and the Dundas West BIA, with materials provided by Decor Terminal. “This year’s mural is a playful first step towards our goal of making this small parkette more attractive to local residents,” said Lubo Brezina,
chair of the Dundas West BIA. Following the unveiling there will be a talk by Jutta Mason, from The Centre for Local Research into Public Space (CELOS), who has played a role in the transformation of Dufferin Grove Park, Campbell Park, MacGregor Park and the Wallace Emerson Rink. “Jutta will talk about trials and tribulations she has had over the years and the kinds of things we should have in place,” Ramos said. Following the talk, Ramos said the floor will be opened to the community and business owners to have their say. The brainstorming session is being done in advance of the DuWest BIA annual general meeting in November. At that time, Ramos said the board will take a look at all the ideas that come out of the Sept. 16 event and see how they plan to proceed.
