The real Sherlock holmes Trinity Bellwoods producer Ed Barreveld explores the impact of fictional character on current life.
Light the Night during Nuit Blanche Event serves as fundraiser and guided tour of annual overnight art festival ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Three family doctors and a finance guy are encouraging people to participate in an art-inspired scavenger hunt to raise awareness and funds for charities helping youth. The third annual TO Light the Night is an interactive hunt held during Nuit Blanche, and organizers say it turns Toronto into a playground while giving participants a chance to discover and give back to their community. The team behind TO Light the Night is Jameel Somji, a 33-year-old Beaconsfield resident who spends his days working in the finance industry, 31-year-old twin sisters and family doctors Nasreen and Noor Ramji, from Trinity Bellwoods, and their fellow family doctor Sheila Lakhoo, who lives in the College and Bay streets area. “We are all art lovers and we believe that art can stir the soul and move people to do good things,” Somji said. And that is the idea behind TO Light the Night: to engage people with the art happening around the city and hopefully inspire them to do more for their community – whether by making monetary donations, volunteering or offering them a service, they said. “If something is happening and
it is not relevant to someone or they can’t connect with (it), they need some sort of intermediary to help them try to connect with the cause or experience something extraordinary so that they feel inspired to do something,” Somji said. “That is where we come in. We balance a fun activity with a cause.” The hunt isn’t an official Nuit Blanche event, rather it piggybacks on the event as a means to raise funds and engage a younger donor or fundraiser. “It is almost like a guided tour of Nuit Blanche,” Ramji said. “Our clues are developed to give you a chance to look at the art and then experience it.” Young Toronto residents may not always have the income to support charities, but what they do have is time and interest, they said. “We thought why don’t we mix the two together and give young people an opportunity to see what is going on in our community (and) identify some of the local groups and charities doing some amazing work to improve the quality of the city,” said Nasreen Ramji. The beneficiaries this year are SKETCH, a west-end arts organization for street-involved and homeless people 15 to 29; Jessie’s, formerly The June Callwood Centre for Young Women; and Covenant House, Canada’s largest youth

shelter. Deciding on the beneficiaries is a rigorous process, Ramji said adding they do extensive research before deciding which organization to support. This year they decided it was important to support organizations that help youth. “When we choose to support youth, we are looking to support people like ourselves,” Somji said. “We may not be in the same social or economic situation, but everyone has their issues and their daily struggles they have to deal with and these organizations support
youth and inspire them to do better things.” They said all three organizations recognize the potential in youth and encourage them the achieve their potentials. The hunt begins at 7 p.m. at the TO Light The Night Headquarters at the ING DIRECT Downtown Cafe, 221 Yonge St. People are asked to pay what they can with a minimum of a $10 donation. Each team has to have a minimum of two people with a maximum of four. Participants get a clue card with 35 to 40 clues. The questions direct the participants so there is no
fear of getting lost, they said. Each clue must be answered using Twitter (@TOLightTheNight) with a photo of the team interacting with the art. People are encouraged to submit their completed clues to the Hunt headquarters by midnight to win prizes. Bonus clues will be tweeted out by TO Light the Night throughout the evening. Organizers estimate it will take two to three hours to complete the hunt. Anyone interested in participating or for more information can visit http://tolightthenight.com
Parkdale-High Park MPP enters fifth decade as an activist ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Forty years ago, Cheri DiNovo was a student activist living in Toronto. It was the early ’70s and DiNovo, now the Member of Provincial Parliament for Parkdale-High Park, explained this city was ripe with activism coming out of the anti-Vietnam movement, and she was right in the middle of it. “It was all part and parcel of a new way of looking at the world,” DiNovo said. DiNovo joined the feminist movement, fighting for women’s equality, which led to becoming involved in the gay rights movement, which she said had many of the same struggles. Back then, DiNovo said you could be fired from your job for being homosexual or you could be refused
rental housing. “They (gay people) had no rights,” DiNovo said. “That seemed to me, back then, as it does today, absolutely unwarranted.” In 1971, she signed the “We Demand” document, a petition to the House of Commons demanding gay rights and the first gay right action on record in Canada. At the 40-year celebration of the document in 2011, she learned she was the only woman to sign it. On Sept. 17, there was a celebration to mark DiNovo’s 41-year involvement in Lesbian Gay Bi and Transgender (LGBT) rights. “I was raised in a human-rightsoriented family,” DiNovo said. “I was always taught that you stand up for people when the law is oppressing them.” Ordained as a United Church minister, her LGBT activism con-
tinued and in 2001 she performed the first legalized gay marriage. “We at Emmanuel Howard Park (church on Roncesvalles Avenue) performed the first marriage between two women. Back then there was nothing on the marriage license that (asked) if you were a man or a woman, so we sent it into Thunder Bay to the Registrars Office and they registered it,” DiNovo said. “It was their mistake at the time because same-sex marriage wasn’t legal, but it held.” There were threats to take away DiNovo’s license, but the wedding remained legal and within a year the laws around same-sex marriage were changed. After that, DiNovo wrote her doctoral thesis, which was turned into a book and published by the University of Berkley in Southern California: Qu(e)erying Evangelism
about growing an inclusive church. In 2005, the book won a civil rights award for activists in the LGBT movement. “Growing an inclusive church is what we did on Roncesvalles. A church that was dying, we turned into a church that saw 1,000 people at worship on Christmas Eve. We were inclusive so we welcomed LGBT and in particular it became a place where trans people found comfort.” Trans people were not covered by the Ontario Human Rights Code when DiNovo was first elected to provincial parliament in 2006, so she tabled a bill asking that gender identity and gender expression to be enshrined in the code. The bill, titled Toby’s Law – named after the former musical director at Emmanuel Howard Park Church – was tabled three times and finally
passed in June. “We are the first jurisdiction (in) North America that has both gender identity and gender expression in,” DiNovo said. “We have every hope it will pass federally as well.” Despite the positive changes for the LGBT community, more work needs to be done, DiNovo said. “We have won significant, massive victories in this country,” DiNovo said. “There is always the next battle, but we have come a long way in this country.” Now that Toby’s Law has been passed, DiNovo said LGBT activists will start looking at the issuing of identification for trans people. “It used to be they (transgender people) had to prove they had gender reassignment surgery before they could change their (identification),” DiNovo said. “We are working to change that.”

Rider rudeness not acceptable on the TTC T
aking transit in this city is not easy at the best of the times. Long trips and a crowded system are a daily challenge for many, so we shouldn’t be surprised incidents of rudeness and bad behaviour by other passengers are becoming a growing concern for many transit users. Part of this is simply a reflection of the society we live in. We see rudeness everywhere. People are always in a hurry, be it while driving or trying to get on a subway train. They put themselves first and care nothing for the people around them. In our special report in today’s paper we look at the Rude Rides experienced by a number of TTC riders. Clearly, there are a lot of issues out there. Riders told us of having to deal with intoxicated, swearing our view passengers; being pushed aside by those charging the doors TTC should of trains and streetcars; being bumped by backpacks; or of not make rudeness being able to sit down due to people sprawling over several a priority seats. And don’t even get them started on the loud cellphone conversations shared with every other passenger. Riders are dealing with this stuff everyday, but it doesn’t appear as if they’ll be getting help any time soon from the TTC itself. “We have a number of areas of concern, but customer behaviour isn’t even in our Top 10. It’s not what we focus on,” Chris Upfold, the TTC’s chief customer care officer, told us for this week’s story. The focus for the TTC is on serving its riders by running on time, and having polite and helpful employees. If the riders cannot behave or have bad manners, the TTC’s position is that it is not up to its employees to scold them. “I would argue the obligation of the operator is no greater than anybody else on that vehicle,” said Uphold when it comes to dealing with a rude passenger. We disagree. TTC passengers have a right to expect a ride free from obnoxious behaviour. We know most riders are courteous and respectful, but it only takes a few to leave a lasting impression, get already stressed passengers upset and lead to unfair perceptions of a TTC ride. Other countries promote courtesy on their transit systems with public awareness campaigns. The TTC should do the same. A campaign that makes people think about their behaviour and the impact it has on other passengers is much needed and should be a priority. Re: ‘Community housing report stands chance of success,’ The City, Sept. 20. I agree with David Nickle’s observations that the report titled “Putting People First” will in all likelihood be accepted by council. However, I do not agree with his quite obvious disdain for our mayor and his attempts to turn the tide in Toronto. Yes, Ford continues to blunder along with a great number of either poor or misdirected attempts at controlling the middle and the left on city council. One of his largest blunders, after Karen Stintz of course, was to appoint Councillor Ana Bailao to head up the housing task force. It was incredibly obvious to even an inexperienced observer, such as myself, that the decision would come back to haunt him. I do not fault our mayor for this, simply his advisors and the leftists on council who are constantly pushing him to compromise and gain a consensus. Leaders do not gain a consensus, they lead. Clifford J. Layne
Media not there to be friends with politicians It has come to this: two hours of simian chestthumping radio on a Sunday afternoon by the mayor and his brother has become the official response to questions and criticism in Toronto. As I write this Tuesday morning, my fellow scribes are reeling from a tirade from our Ford and his immediate family: we have been branded “pathological liars,” embarrassments to our city and as “a bunch of pricks,” by Councillor Doug Ford as he fled questions following a Monday budget committee meeting. T h e o u t b u r s t s a re a response to a spate of bad press for the Ford brothers. Reports have alleged the mayor used city resources to help with his high school football coaching duties, in violation of council’s code of conduct. In the summer,
THE CITY
david nickle
Ford met with city staff to urge them to repair potholes in front of his family’s business, in advance of a 50th anniversary celebration. He justified it by explaining if those repairs weren’t done, someone might have twisted an ankle and sued. And it all comes in the context of a pending decision by Ontario Chief Justice Charles Hackland on a conflict of interest matter that could see Ford removed from office. Vaguely obscene invective is probably not the best response to all those allegations, but it’s certainly understandable.
And it’s not without precedent. Former mayor Mel Lastman once publicly threatened to have then-television reporter Adam Vaughan killed because he believed Vaughan was responsible for leaking a story about his wife to the satirical political magazine Frank. Mayor David Miller was a bit more sophisticated about it. He avoided death threats, but he had a way of eviscerating reporters who dared to ask ill-informed or too-pointed questions that stung deep. As a journalist covering this beat, I’ve been on the frosty end of freeze-outs by politicians who haven’t appreciated stories I’ve written about them. Sometimes, I’ve been called names. Sometimes I’ve been simply told the story has hurt their feelings. But it’s all an occupational hazard. The fact is that none
of us in the media are here to be friends to the politicians we cover. As far as the Ford brothers go, the fact is that Rob, at least, is in trouble. Details have emerged that call into question his political character as he’s presented it to voters. Where now is the harsh critic of councillors who feather their nests with public money, the everyman who vows to ensure residents get fair treatment from city bureaucrats, when he’s accused of using his office budget for football and encouraging staff to put his own family’s needs ahead of others? Absent good, comprehensible answers to those questions, the Fords’ response is to pose their own, rhetorical question: How dare any of us pose such disrespectful questions in the first place?

Roncesvalles ramps remove built barriers ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com When faced with a step or a stoop in front of a store, a simple plywood wedge can make life easier for everyone. “It (barriers) really prevents everybody from easily enjoying a space whether you are a delivery person trying to lug packages into a business or a parent pushing a stroller, it makes everyone’s life a little more difficult when you encounter a barrier,” said Luke Anderson, who, along with Michael Hopkins created StopGap, a program that aims to create a “world where every person can access every space through fun and engaging community projects that raise awareness and remove barriers”. “For someone like myself, who uses a wheelchair, it is even more of an issue. It impedes an independent way of life and prevents spontaneity.” Anderson said the project was created out of a need to raise awareness about barriers in the built environment, including Anderson’s office,

which, at one time, had three steps at the front office. “Michael would typically come down and help me deploy a folding ramp,” Anderson said. “It was a frustrating thing to have to phone ahead and make sure there was someone there to help me get into my place of work.” Barriers in the built environment is an issue across the city and in communities all over Canada. Anderson and Hopkins, both engineers, started StopGap a year ago and their first proj-
ect was installing 12 ramps in the Junction. During the Polish Festival on Roncesvalles Avenue this year, StopGap facilitated the construction, painting and delivery of 43 ramps, the organization’s largest project to date. “It was a total home run and we are getting some great feedback from residents and the community,” Anderson said. Pollock’s Home Hardware provided all of the materials and contracting company Greening Homes helped build the ramps. Anderson said the Roncesvalles Village Business

Improvement Area (BIA) was also a big support. “We like having an organization like that on board because it helps give the project some weight and it helps businesses accept and understand that the project is legitimate,” he said. The pair went from business to business along Roncesvalles explaining the project, and Anderson said many business people were happy to participate. The ramps are made to be deployed by the proprietor when someone needing it comes along. They are not meant to be permanent fixtures, Anderson said. They are also brightly coloured, which is in part meant to draw people’s attention and start a conversation about barriers. “As engineers, we understand that the design process takes time and in order for a good solution to be zeroed in on it will take thought and some trial and error. But the hope is that this project will get people thinking about smart solutions.” For more information visit www.stopgap.ca

Transit users speak out against bad behaviour RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com
T
he woman who spoke so loudly during her phone conversation her words could be heard in excruciating detail all the way from the back of the streetcar. The patron who charged the closing subway doors without a care for anyone around him. The time when a fight nearly broke out over a seat during rush hour. When it comes to rude behaviour on the TTC, nearly every rider, it seems, has a story. Some say they tolerate inconsiderate behaviour because it’s not worth getting into a potential altercation. Others have spoken up on behalf of fellow patrons being subjected to rudeness. Amanda Hiebert recalls a time on board a Parkdale bus when an extremely intoxicated patron spewed non-stop profanities in front of small children and their parents during the heart of rush hour. “She was cussing like she invented swear words,” said Hiebert. “I turned around and said, ‘Can you clean up your mouth?’” For intervening, Hiebert says she received a fresh volley of abuse from the inebriated woman, who finally decamped the bus a few stops later. “I’m not one of those people who can just sit there and say nothing,” she said. Most patrons who spoke with The Villager said the TTC should act more proactively to deal with rude riders, whether that means an awareness campaign or directing staff to intervene. “If there was an ad campaign with some kind of statistic or something, it might strike a chord with me,” said
Rudeness: not just a TTC issue Many passengers see a general lack of politeness

TTC chief customer service officer Chris Upfold calls rudeness on the transit system a ‘societal’ issue.
Hassan Ibrahim, a passenger on the 501 Queen streetcar last week. “It’s happening in their stations, on their vehicles,” said commuter Sunny Wong, waiting for a bus at Victoria Park and Sheppard Avenue. “There should be standards for whenever you take the TTC.” a closer But while look the TTC Inside does make Toronto announcements related to transit etiquette, such as asking riders to remove their large knapsacks during rush hour, spokesperson Chris Upfold said there are no plans to deal with the issue much more than that. “We have a number of areas of concern, but customer behaviour isn’t even in our Top 10. It’s not what we focus on,” said Upfold, the TTC’s chief customer care officer. “Rudeness is not something that catches my attention as being high.” Upfold, who was hired
by the TTC to improve customer care, said the transit agency’s employees shouldn’t be required to improve what he termed a “societal” issue. “I would argue the obligation of the operator is no greater than anybody else on that vehicle,” said Upfold. He said riders should alter their travel patterns and the times they travel in order to reduce potential disputes. “Let’s say you travel at 8:30 a.m. and it’s tough to find a seat. Leave 15 minutes earlier and there’s a better chance you’re getting on the train,” said Upfold. Transit agencies in other cities have taken steps to reduce rude behaviour by riders. For the last seven years, New York City subway riders face a $50 ticket, and in some cases can even be arrested, for sitting “improperly” on a seat or taking up more than one seat. More recently, the Paris, France rapid transit authority RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) launched a publicity campaign tar-
geting rude patrons of the Metro. Phil Wood, who retired recently from the London Underground where he was manager of operational analysis, said the rudeness of patrons riding the subway was never considered much of a problem, though laws targeting certain behaviours have proved effective. He said Underground workers are directed not to get into confrontations with transit users, and instead are to alert the transport police responsible for patrolling the system’s 402 kilometres of track. He recalled a regulation adopted by British lawmakers a couple of years ago that made it illegal for riders to travel the Underground with open containers of alcohol. “It’s more of a perception issue, really, and
they made a rule that put people at ease,” said Wood, who was in Toronto last week. Upfold said the TTC is set to examine the findings from a study that examined nearly 5,000 rider complaints in hopes of offering better service. But he said rudeness on the TTC, just as it exists in other places in the city, would remain a reality, “TTC is part of society,” he said. “The problems we face are the same as what society faces.” Valentino Assenza, who commutes to work downtown from the Beach via the TTC, said while he’d like to see steps taken to address the issue of rudeness, he was unsure how it should proceed. “It’s hard to legislate courtesy,” he said. “How we go about enforcing this, I don’t really know.”

hen it comes to transit non-etiquette, C. Clattenburg said Toronto surpasses both New York City and London. Clattenburg, who runs a video rental store in Parkdale, has travelled on both cities’ transit systems and said he’s encountered more rudeness on the TTC. He blames a general lack of politeness that stretches outside the neighbourhood. “It’s gotten worse, but that’s the city in general, there’s a lack of civility,” said Clattenburg at Queen Street West and Fuller Avenue. “People are less patient now.” It’s not just the behaviour of commuters that bothers Clattenburg. He said he has seen TTC personnel mistreating customers. “I was at Roncesvalles (Avenue) and I saw two workers complaining loudly about having to assist the elderly, right in front of an old person waiting for the streetcar. I’m sure she heard everything,” he said. On the 501 Queen streetcar headed west past Beaconsfield Avenue, Hassan Ibrahim said he rarely encounters rudeness from either TTC staff or riders. Dubai Ibrahim, who moved to Toronto from Dubai a year-and-a-half ago, said he’s an occasional user of the streetcar, which is packed come rush hour, but can’t recall a single memorable episode of rudeness. He’s surprised to hear it’s considered an issue. “Maybe I’m not paying enough attention,” Ibrahim said. Dan, standing outside a cafe near Brock Avenue, said he sometimes has to raise his walking cane to get someone to give up their seat. He wonders if attitudes among younger transit users are getting worse. “Kids aren’t taught like we were 50 years ago. I don’t know whose fault it is. Sometimes you wonder about the parents,” said Dan, who declined to provide his last name. “When I was a kid, we were raised to get up and let the older ladies sit down. That’s supposed to be the way it works.” – Rahul Gupta

Budget committee to look ‘line-by-line’ at city’s four accountability offices Perks worries about loss of groups’ independence with decision DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s budget committee will be taking a “line-by-line” look at the budgets of the city’s four accountability offices at a public meeting later this year. The four accountability offices are the ombudsman, the auditor general, the lobbyist registrar and the integrity commissioner. The budget committee voted to back a walk-on motion from its chair, Mike Del Grande, to review the budgets going back two years and going ahead another two. The budget committee has looked at other departmental budgets this way. That process has critics on council suggesting the budget committee could be compromising watchdog organizations whose job it is to keep Toronto councillors and city
staff honest. Del Grande refused to speak with the Villager following the meeting to clarify his reasons. But during the meeting, he said he will have the meeting in public because of concerns raised about the arms-length nature of the offices. “For whatever reason there’s a feeling that the integrity, the independence of these offices may be somewhat hampered because they report to council and come through the budget committee,” he said. “So I didn’t have a lot of input last year other than to look at the numbers that were provided. But in terms of thoroughness, I would have preferred to have done this offline, but we’re going to do it publicly, go line by line..” The integrity commissioner’s office made headlines earlier this month as Mayor Rob Ford was forced to testify in his own
defence over a conflict of interest charge. Ford had spoken at council, urging councillors to reverse a decision to compel him to repay $3,150 as recommended by the Integrity Commissioner. Del Grande said “it’s not a matter of interfering with anybody’s investigation. The money still comes out of the general coffers to fund those areas of the city and as a consequence they need to be scrutinized.” The review raised some questions among other councillors. Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks said the budgets for those groups have always been treated with care, and brought directly to council after the mayor’s budget has been introduced. “It’s very important that the ombudsman has the freedom to say this department made a mistake or the lobbyist registrar to say this civil servant
shouldn’t have spoken to this lobbyist,” he said. “If the public service controls their budget rather than council they lose that independence.” Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan worried that any attempt to cut the budgets of accountability officers would have the effect of reducing accountability. “If you want to silence an investigation, cut their budget,” he said. Following the meeting, budget committee member James Pasternak said while he supported the idea of the accountability offices, he felt they are often used for vendettas. “For the person without any recourse, there’s a besmirching process,” he said. “We have to be very careful about who’s filing these complaints, how much it’s going to be costing the taxpayers and whether it’s vindictive and frivolous...”
