Christine M Stockdale (1881-1933)
Born in South Africa, Stockdale worked in both London and South Africa and was amongst the relatively small group of women working as sculptors in the Edwardian period particularly in South Africa. Her recorded dates are often confused with those of an aunt of the same name, who predeceased her by a year. William Kineton Parkes singled Stockdale out as one of the noteworthy sculptors in London who specialised in animal stone carving. Born in South Africa to an English father, she was the niece of the Sister Henrietta Stockdale (1847-1911), the British nursing pioneer and Anglican religious sister, an important and celebrated figure in the foundation of South African healthcare. Christine returned to England and studied in Birmingham although returned to South Africa during World War I where she worked for various patrons including the Friesland Breeders Association, working on two of their trophies depicting cattle. She returned to London establishing a studio in Hammersmith after the war and she travelled internationally. In London Stockdale sought primarily animal commissions relying on London Zoo for sketching the more exotic animals she had access to in South Africa. Although little is known of her later career, it seems that she was dogged by fragile health and died in Salisbury in 1933.

The distinctive inter-twined palm fronds are a feature used by John Cobb, most notably on the commode and matching pedestals supplied to Paul Methuen at Corsham Court (1772). The device appears on other commodes linked to the Corsham commodes group and illustrated in L.Wood, The Lady Lever Art Gallery Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, pp.91-94. The use of the palm fronds enclosing a marquetry medallion is employed on a cylinder bureau attributed to Cobb and sold Christie's London, 28th June 1984, lot 102. The delicate prigged floral marquetry is another device associated with Cobb and seen on the Christie's cylinder bureau as well as on numerous pieces linked to Cobb's workshop.
John Cobb (1715-1778) established premises at 72 St Martin's Lane, London completing his apprenticeship in 1736 entering into partnership with William Vile in 1751 and taking over the firm upon Vile's retirement in 1764. From 1761 Cobb was granted a royal warrant to supply furniture to the crown under the direction of the Great Wardrobe. Lamb of Manchester was a renowned cabinetmaking firm, founded by James Lamb (1817-1903), one of England‟ leading high class interior design, decorating and furnishing firms of the day. Established in 1843, the firm had a cabinet making workshop in Castleford and their main gallery in John Dalton Street, Manchester, with vast furniture showrooms over three floors showing their quality pieces for sale. The firm gained a national and international reputation in the early 1860's, winning medals at the London 1862 Exhibition and the Paris 1867 Exhibition. James Lamb of Manchester became known for high quality materials and workmanship, as well as for the innovative designs created by such artists as Charles Bevan and Bruce Talbert.
James Lamb‟s obituary appeared in The Journal of Decorative Art and British Decorators in 1903, it stated that his name „as a synonym for the best in everything that he did from 1850 –1885, and he towered over everybody …s a maker of high class furniture‟
Among other related examples of James Lamb's oeuvre is a chiffonier of Hungarian ash and harewood, circa 1870, in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, (illustrated Simon Jervis, Victorian Furniture, London 1968, p. 60, pl. 56)
