The Pedestal Bespoke Bone china and porcelain lights by

Margaret O’Rorke The selection will be on exhibition and available to buy or commission during the pre-auction view of Design For Living. The Pedestal’s Bespoke range offers unique, beautifully designed and produced objects by British craftspeople. For over 40 years Margaret O’Rorke has been captivated by the translucence of bone china and porcelain when lit from within and this fascination has informed her works in their wide ranging designs and highly imaginative forms throughout her career. Margaret initially studied Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art and afterwards she spent a year at Camberwell School of Art where Dame Lucie Rie was one of her tutors in ceramics. Dame Lucie was one of the first people to see Margaret’s early porcelain lights, and her support and encouragement helped to set Margaret on her creative path.

Cylinders and Suspended Pods take their inspiration from Margaret’s travels in both manmade and natural environments, for the first, the skyscraper skyline of Osaka, and, the second, the resilient native flora of the Australian outback. Whereas in Whirling Dervish and Curled Light Sculpture fine porcelain thrown on her wheel is then twisted and turned into structures with movement and energy. Conus & Trochus and Moon lights simply demonstrate that illuminated porcelain provides not only an enchanting source of light, but also warm focal point to domestic and commercial interiors alike. Finally, in Waves fine porcelain bands come together to form an elegant structure of harmonious and calming undulating ribbons. CYLINDERS Free-standing thrown lit porcelain light sculpture The inspiration for Cylinders originated many years ago. Margaret O’Rorke was in Osaka, Japan, high up in a dramatic skyscraper hotel looking down onto the crowded city below. It was the first time she had been in a skyscraper. When back home in her studio she thought, “what will happen if I throw a lot of cylinders, all different heights, just as I had seen from the skyscraper?”. Margaret joined the cylinders together and found a way to disguise a light inside. This is her own interpretation of Osaka as seen from above. Dimensions, height: 200mm, diameter: 480mm Price: £6,000

WHIRLING DERVISH The thrown fine porcelain is cut with a waving wire from the potters wheel, twisted, turned and joined, giving the feeling of Whirling Dervishes. The black thrown ceramic base holds the G9 lamp holder and lamp. Dimensions, height: approx. 170mm, diameter: 130mm Price: £500

CONUS & TROCHUS Conus & Trochus: cast translucent porcelain re-chargeable table lights. Conus, height: 150mm, diameter: 110mm; Trochus, height: 150mm, diameter: 140mm Margaret O’Rorke has combined all her experience to create porcelain re-chargeable table lights suitable for the hospitality industry and the home. They can be placed anywhere, both indoors and outdoors, and give a natural focus, for example, enhancing a dinner table and creating a focus to a gathering. The induction battery will last up to 16 hours. Conus and Trochus are both created from a thrown clay cone shape which is then fluted. Price: each £270

WAVES Thrown, reformed and joined translucent porcelain lit wall sculpture. The translucent porcelain lit wall sculpture is wheel-thrown. Fine porcelain bands are reformed and joined onto one flat thrown circular band to form a single stable structure and fired to 1,300°C. A metal backing plate with electrical fittings supports the lit translucent porcelain form. Dimensions, diameter: 500mm, height: 200mm, depth: 140mm Price: £2,975

CURLED LIGHT SCULPTURE Free-standing, small thrown porcelain cut, twisted and joined light sculpture on a thrown ceramic black base. Dimensions, height: 240mm Price: £300

MOON LIGHTS Translucent bone china pendant Moon lights are cast from the forms of Margaret O’Rorke’s handcrafted inspirations which begin on the potter’s wheel. The form of the light comes about by letting the nature of the bone china material take its own course when on the wheel the clay is thrown as thinly as possible. Margaret is currently working with the finest skilled porcelain and bone china manufacturers to develop new lighting concepts and aesthetics. Hitherto, these materials have not been regarded as material for lighting made on a large scale. Moon lights can be suspended singly or arranged in groups of three or more. Dimensions, height: 150mm, depth: 160mm Price: each £250 MOON LIGHTS Iis also available as a free standing lamp Price: each £325

SUSPENDED PODS Five different pairs of cast translucent white porcelain pods suspended on an adjustable 12-volt track system. Each pair of pods: diameter: 190mm, depth: 140mm The light cast by Suspended Pods onto the nearby wall forms part of this original lighting concept and becomes an integral part of an interior living space. Designed for both commercial and domestic settings. The height of the five pairs of pods can be customised to the client’s specification. On a visit to Australia in 1997, Margaret O’Rorke was captivated by the exquisite native plants which thrive in challenging environments and grow from stony, arid ground. On her return to the UK she explored the pod form, and fascinated by the possibilities of the 12volt track system, she devised forms which could be strung across a room or a dining table without the need to install electrical fittings. A vertical hanging system soon followed, and as Margaret always aims to disguise the engineering and electrical fittings, here double sided forms are suspended on an invisible thrown porcelain support. Price: £4,450
