39 A late 15th century carved marble female standing figure of the Virgin Wearing a crown and a long draped dress, with flowers in her hair, possibly once holding lilies, weathered (a.f), 102cm high. £1000-£1500 Provenance: By repute from Magdalen College, Oxford purchased by the current vendor about 30 years ago. It is thought that this statue could date from the period soon after the founding of Magdalen College, Oxford, by William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester, in 1458. The college buildings were set out in 1474 and incorporated some of those from St John’s Hospital which previously occupied the site, the 13th century chapel of the Hospital is still incorporated in the range fronting the street. In 1475 William Orchard, a mason, was contracted to work on the West window of the Chapel, other parts of the Chapel, the Cloister windows and the towers and by 1480 the college was occupied. It is possible that the late sculptor Patrick Conoley created a new statue for Magdalen College to replace the work on offer here, although it is not known where in the college our statue might have originally stood. Over a period of 11 years from 1971 Conoley designed and carved over 150 sculptures for Magdalen, many of these to replace damaged or weathered early pieces. He started carving in stone at the age of 14 and on leaving school took up an apprenticeship with the renowned firm of R L Boulton & Sons in Cheltenham. Over the course of his career Conoley produced hundreds of wooden and stone sculptures for buildings, churches and cathedrals throughout the world, he also worked on the restoration of Blenheim Palace, Woodstock. In 1913 four statues were produced for the niches in the south façade of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford, a Grade I listed building dating from 1194 when St. Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln, replaced a single-aisle chapel erected after a fire in 1074 which had destroyed the original Saxon wooden church. St Mary Magdalen was later restored in 1841-42 - a young, and as yet, unknown architect George Gilbert Scott and his partner W B Moffatt worked on the north aisle of the church, where they created the first Gothic Revival interior in Oxford. The identity of the sculptor responsible for the four early 20th century works is not known, but “Maria” could have been designed whilst our statue was still in situ and on view at Magdalen College. There are subtle resemblances between the two pieces, and both carry stems of flowers in their right hand, likely to be lilies. Arts & Crafts was at its height in 1913, and the dress and overall appearance of Maria and her companions at St Mary Magdalen, as with the movement itself, are clearly influenced by the aesthetics of the Middle Ages.

Joanna Booth The Discerning Eye Lots 40 - 197 “I always claimed that my future lay in the past, which it has very happily,” says Joanna Booth, the London-based antique dealer who for more than five decades has been sourcing and selling so much of the best that the past has to offer. Inspired by visits to historic buildings while still at school - she remembers being “absolutely entranced” by the “wobbly woodwork and imaginative carving” at Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire - Joanna developed an early love for 16th and 17th century furniture and sculpture. In 1967, Joanna opened her eponymous, characterful shop at 247 Kings Road in Chelsea, the hub of London’s fashionable life during the “Swinging Sixties.” The Joanna Booth “look” gradually evolved. English early oak furniture and carvings were mixed with European tapestries, some medieval art, Old Master drawings and 16th and 17th century sculpture and decorations, like Italian giltwood altar candlesticks that could be converted into elegant lamps. Volumes of leather-bound French classics and velvet cushions embellished with fragments of centuries-old tapestry lent some final touches of opulence to this distinctive taste “Although antiques lacked high fashion, they still held their own in a good mix of trades,” Joanna recalls. “247 was the ideal shop for my mixture of early antiques. I had a wide variety of customers.” Back in the 1980s and ‘90s, Joanna Booth was a regular exhibitor at the then-flourishing Olympia Summer Antiques Fair. Those were the days before minimalism and contemporary art dominated the thinking of interior decorators. Joanna’s stand became an unmissable destination for many American decorators and she would often cover her expenses with sales of tapestry cushions within the first few hours of the fair. Stock was regularly refreshed with unusual and interesting finds from markets and auctions in France and the rest of Europe. Joanna’s preChristmas shows of affordable Old Master drawings at 247 Kings Road became a favourite fixture with her loyal clientele. And in 1981 there was even a flamboyant themed exhibition of drawings and sculptures of angels, opened by the qually flamboyant former Arts Minister, Norman St. John-Stevas. Gilded baroque cherubim and seraphim flew across ceilings and w-alls painted with fluffy Magrittestyle clouds. Joanna closed her shop at 247 Kings Road in 2007. It is now a snack bar. Tastes and buying patterns have changed dramatically since the glory days of the London antiques trade, back in the last decades of the 20th century. Nowadays the better-off decorate their homes in pretty much the same way wherever they are in the world. Bare white walls, a bit of mid-century furniture here, a tastefully cool piece of contemporary art there. But now, gradually, decorators, collectors and home-owners are once again discovering how the character and beauty of older objects and furniture can transform the appearance of a contemporary home. Joanna Booth showed us the way. — Scott Reyburn, New York Times

47 Figure of a bishop, probably St Martin of Tours, Spanish, Catalonia, circa 1300 Limestone with some original colour, 110 cm high. £7000-£10000 The elongated stance of this sculpture indicates that he was probably a figure on the west façade of a church, possibly within a niche where the upper part would have had some protection from the weather. St. Martin, as Bishop of Tours, raises his hand in blessing to the faithful or possibly he is making the distinctive circular gesture representing the closing movements of the Benedictio Graeca. As the founder of some of the first monasteries he was a popular image in the thirteenth and fourteenth century with many churches dedicated to him. The growth of monasteries throughout Spain resulted in French and particularly Burgundian influences becoming apparent in Iberian sculpture and architecture. This was also compounded by Pilgrim routes and portable items such as manuscripts and small ivories. The sculpture portrays similarities to ecclesiastical column figures in France with his stalwart pose, his drapery folds and the tight curls around the edge of his mitre. His expression is one of detached serenity, his eyes and eye brows well accentuated with the tones of colour similar to frescoes in Catalonian churches. His chasuble falls in soft “trough” folds but descends into a more rigid lines to strengthen his stance whilst his staff is angled to reflect his slight contra posta.

McLean and son was established in London around 1770, trading from premises in Little Newport Street, Leicester Square up until 1783. When we offer items for consignment at auction, we will usually include in the auction listing a description of the lot and an estimate of potential sale value. Upon request we may also supply a condition report, which will be based on a visual inspection of each lot without disassembly or further investigation of physical condition, and on information available to us at the time. All information is provided after due consideration and to the best of our knowledge and experience, but cannot be taken as a statement of fact, a guarantee or statement of value or a guarantee or statement that mechanical or electrical parts are functioning correctly or at all. 4. All measurements provided are approximate. Colours of any image depicted in any printed catalogue, on our website or otherwise may not appear the same as colours perceived on physical inspection. 5. Lots offered for sale will be available for viewing in person at such place and times as are advertised before the auction. We always recommend inspection in person. 6.
