All the carved parts (crest and lower rail, side splats and stretcher) may be stamped with the initials of a carver. The purpose of these stamps was to identify the work of the individual carvers, probably to ensure payment for work done. (See A. 48 A rare set of twelve Elizabethan sycamore painted roundels or fruit trenchers in original box late 16th/early 17th century Painted and gilt and contained within a turned beechwood box, with traces of decoration to the lid and sides, each roundel centred by a different verse or ‘poesie’ within a gilded, scrolled and floral border, each 13cm diameter, the box 16cm diameter, 4cm high. £8,000-£10,000

Provenance: The mathematician, philosopher and inventor Charles Babbage, M.A., F.R.S (1792-1871) Sold by one of his descendants, Sotheby & Co, 28 November 1934, lot 130 Purchased by the current owner from a London auction house in the late 1960’s. Charles Babbage was one of the founders of the Astronomical Society, 1820, a principal founder of the Statistical Society 1834 and inventor of a Calculating Machine, now on display in the Science Museum, South Kensington. After the early death of his wife he turned to a life of science and society, centred around his London mansion on Dorset Street in fashionable Manchester Square. He is considered by some as the ‘father of the computer’. These trenchers, roundels or roundelays of the 16th and 17th centuries were usually made of beech or sycamore and were often painted on one side with one or two verses of ‘epigrams’ or ‘poesies’, which were enhance by a gold effect-achieved with yellow varnish over a layer of silver leaf, then a layer of hard varnished. They generally were made in sets of eight, twelve or occasionally twenty four in decorated circular boxes, although very rarely have full sets survived.

The plain sides were said to be used for meals (sweet meats- exotic spices, sugar confectionary and marzipan sculpture), then turned over when the meal had finished for the poesies to be read or sung by the guests. The educated guest should have been able to identify the images and significance of the verse enabling them to discuss its concepts in greater depth. The Art of English Poesie, attributed to Puttenham and published in 1589 was cited by a correspondent of the Gentleman’s Magazine, 1797: ‘There be also another like epigrams that were sent usually for New Yeare’s gifts or be printed or painted on banketting dishes of sugar plate or of March paines, &c.,. they were called Nenia or Apopohoreta, and never contained above one verse, or two at the most, but the shorter the better. We call them poesies, and do paint them now-a-dayes upon the back side of our fruittrenchers of wood, or use them as devises in rings and arms’ See O.Evan-Thomas, Domestic Utensils of Wood, 1932 p.63-64, Ornamental Fruit Trenchers or ‘Roundels’, Chapter V for a very closely related set of twelve boxed roundels. Another painted and boxed set of four is now in the Metropolitan Museum, gifted by Irwin Untermyer in 1964. The box is decorated with a Royal Coat of Arms. A similar set of ten roundels sold Bonhams, The Oak Inte-

rior, 28 March 2018, lot 4, which belonged to Lady Shaw of Bushy Park, Ireland, the box also decorated with a pre-1604 Royal Coat of Arms. E.H.Pinto in Treen and other wooden bygones, London 1969 p.80 suggests that those lids of boxes which were painted with the Royal Coat of Arms were possibly given by Elizabeth I to the members of nobility as a New Year gift in return for their gifts, as was the custom. Those examples with the Royal Coat of Arms were similar probably as they all came from the same maker, who made them under Royal Warrant. The traces of paint to the lid of the box in the above lot may indicate that this was by the same maker and possibly originally also had the Royal Coat of Arms of the monarch. See also Sotheby’s, June 6, 2006, lot 228 for a set of twelve in a beechwood box, part of the James Walker Collection, previously sold from the The W.J Shepherd Collection of Treen, Sotheby’s London 30 November 1983, lot 770. Other related examples in recent years were sold Christie’s, London, 27 May 1999, lot 319, Christies, South Kensington, 8 November 2006 lot 95, which were two roundels formerly part of the Levi Collection and illustrated in J.Levi, Treen for the Table, 1998, pp.135-137 and Christie’s, South Kensington, 27 April 2006, lot 24.

Titled a ‘Dressing Chest & Bookcase’ it shows a versatility of form and function suited to a gentleman of wealth. The attribution to the London trained cabinet-makers Richard Wright & Edward Elwick of Wakefield, Yorkshire (fl 1745-1771) is substantiated by two comparable examples, namely a dressing chest and bookcase from Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire sold Christies, London 8 July 2008, lot 70. The firm were commissioned to produce furniture for Wentworth by the Marquess of Rockingham from the late 1740’s. A second example was loaned by Lord St Oswald of Nostell Priory, Yorkshire and exhibited at Temple Newsam House, Leeds in 1951, Thomas Chippendale, Cat. No.26 (illustrated A.Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, No. 261). Both Wright and Elwick were subscribers to The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, of 1754, Chippendale himself being a Yorkshire man who worked for Sir Rowland Winn of Nostell Priory in 1766 following on from Wright & Elwick, who had been almost certainly employed there before him.

260 ¥ A 17th century Indo-Portuguese teak, ebony and ivory marquetry Contador or Standing Cabinet In two parts, the rectangular moulded top above eight short and two deep drawers, the lower part with two short and one long drawer flanked by two praying mermaid caryatids to each corner on block feet, Goa, 86cm wide, 45cm deep, 119cm high. £6,000-£8,000 This type of cabinet typifies the exotic furniture manufactured for Portuguese traders at Indian and Goanese ports in the 17th century. Most surviving examples use mermaid-like figural supports on the base, as in this example which may correspond to naginis, female snake-like demi-gods in Hindu iconography symbolic of prosperity. A cabinet of similar form is in the V & A (Amin Jaffer, Luxury Goods from India, London, 2002, no. 22, pp. 58-9). A Goanese attribution is in part based on the existence of purpose built church furniture closely related in style which exists in the Sacristy of the Bom Jesus in Old Goa. The fitted chests of drawers and cabinets in the sacristy are likely to have been installed some time between 1654 (when the sacristy was enlarged) and 1698 (when the catafalque of St. Francis Xavier was erected), (F.C.Freire, 50 dos Melhores Móveis Portugueses, Chaves Ferrira, Publicaçoes, S.A., Lisbon, 1995, p.54 quoted in Jaffer, op. cit., p. 57). See also L.Feduchi, A History of World Furniture, p.446, for a similar cabinet in the Museo Nacional De Arte Antiga, Lisbon. Some related examples sold at auction are Bonhams, London, 22 November 2005, lot 242 and 5 April 2000, lot 24, Phillips, London, 21 June 1994, lot 82, Christie’s, London, 31 March 2009, lot 218, 18 June 1976, lot 195, 27 March 1986, lot 109, 8 December 1988, lot 141, 29 November 1990, lot 265, 6 June 1991, lot 298 and 9 December 1993, lot 298. TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR AUCTION PURCHASERS 1. These Terms and Conditions apply to all transactions relating to the purchase of items by a bidder (referred to as “you”) at auction or as an auction after-sale by The Pedestal Limited, trading as The Pedestal (referred to as “we”), and may not be varied unless agreed in writing in advance by one of our directors. By registering to bid and/or bidding you accept these terms. 2. We act as agent for the seller whose identity we will not disclose, unless otherwise stated. 3. When we offer items for consignment at auction, we will usually include in the auction listing a description of the lot and an estimate of potential sale value. Upon request we may also supply a condition report, which will be based on a visual inspection of each lot without disassembly or further investigation of physical condition, and on information available to us at the time. All information is provided after due consideration and to the best of our knowledge and experience, but cannot be taken as a statement of fact, a guarantee or statement of value or a guarantee or statement that mechanical or electrical parts are functioning correctly or at all. 4. All measurements provided are approximate. Colours of any image depicted in any printed catalogue, on our website or otherwise may not appear the same as colours perceived on physical inspection. 5. Lots offered for sale will be available for viewing in person at such place and times as are advertised before the auction. We always recommend inspection in person. 6. A registration form will be available on our website, at the auction or upon request and must be completed in advance of the auction by anyone wishing to bid. You may also be required to provide proof of identity and proof of address unless you are already known to us. A separate fee may be levied and separate registration may be required for online bidding, whether on our own or a third party platform. 7. Commission bids may be refused unless they have been entered on our registration form and accepted in advance of the auction. 8. We may at our discretion accept bids from someone acting on behalf of a third party, subject to receiving a letter of authorisation which is satisfactory to us. In the event that such a bid is successful we reserve the right to treat either the bidder or the third party as the successful bidder for all purposes including as regards obtaining payment for the lot. 9. Auctions are conducted according to our discretion and that of our auctioneer. We may refuse to allow access to the auction, refuse or accept any bid, alter the order of lots and/or the bidding in such way as we think best, withdraw any lot, reopen bidding after the hammer has fallen, determine who is the successful bidder, cancel the sale of any lot or otherwise regulate the auction and all associated proceedings as we deem most appropriate. Our decision in relation to any dispute relating to bidding which may arise during or after the auction is final. We may (but are not obliged to) offer bidding in person, by commission bids left with us in advance of the auction, by telephone, or online via our own or a third party platform. We will not in any event be liable for any failure to take a bid whether caused by breakdown of communications technology or otherwise. 10. Both the auction as a whole and calls used for telephone bids may be recorded and such recordings may be retained by us and by participating in the same you consent to such recording and retention. 11. Most lots are offered subject to a reserve below which the lot will not be sold. The level of the reserve is confidential between ourselves and our seller but will not be higher than the lower estimate. 12. We may enter one or more bids consecutively or otherwise on behalf of the seller up to but not beyond the level of the reserve. 13. Subject only to the auctioneer’s discretion set out in clause 9 above, when the auctioneer’s hammer falls no further bids will be accepted and a contract for sale is formed between the successful bidder and ourselves as agent for the seller. 14. We will endeavour to send out invoices promptly by mail or email using the contact details supplied to us by the successful bidder. If you believe that you are the successful bidder for any lot but have not heard from us within three working days of the auction we recommend that you contact us to arrange collection and avoid potential storage charges. 15. We will charge a buyer’s fee of 25% on the first £50,000 of the hammer price of each lot, and 20% of any portion of such hammer price which is above £50,000, plus VAT. 16. Payment for each lot which you have purchased including all associated fees, charges and taxes is due no later than 7 calendar days after the auction. Payment can be made only by the registered bidder. Payment instructions will be given on the relevant invoice or invoices. Please note that we do not accept payment by credit card. 17. No lot will be released and legal title will not pass to you until we have received due payment in full of all sums owed to us by you. Risk in any lot for which you are the successful bidder will pass to you on the earlier of collection of the lot by you or on your behalf, or the due date for payment for such lot. 18. If you fail to make due payment for any lot we may, at our discretion and without limitation to other available remedies, charge you interest at the rate of 12% per annum; bring legal proceedings against you for the unpaid sum and all associated fees and costs including professional fees (“Unpaid Sums”); retain and sell ourselves or otherwise any other lots held by us which are your property or any sums otherwise payable by us to you and use such proceeds or sums to defray the Unpaid Sums; cancel the sale, re-offer the lot and claim any shortfall and any associated costs from you; and/or pass your identity and contact details to the seller so that they can pursue legal remedies against you directly. 19. All lots must be collected from our shipper as notified to you in the auction catalogue and otherwise, within 14 days after the auction. Storage and handling fees will be charged in relation to lots left uncollected after that date at the shipper’s standard rates from time to time.
