Western cabinet-makers turned to John Stalker and George Parker’s seminal 1688 Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing which provided the recipes for producing the various different colours but also templates of Chinese figures, plants and gardens which could be used to create seemingly authentic Chinese scenes. European ‘japanning’ remained fashionable until the end of the eighteenth century. The unusual faux tortoiseshell interior reflects the vogue for this expensive and difficult to acquire material. Cabinet-makers in this period also tried to emulate tortoiseshell with the use of what was historically called ‘Mulberry wood’. Burr alder, ash and elm were amongst the timbers treated using aqua fortis or nitric acid, heat and lampblack to create a tortoiseshell-like effect. Tortoiseshell was made fashionable by the influential designs produced by French cabinet makers such as Pierre Golle and André Charles Boulle. For more information on the use of aqua fortis see A. Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, Antique Collector’s Club, 2009, p.311.

118 A George III mahogany serpentine chest possibly by Thomas Chippendale The rectangular moulded top above a baize lined slide and four long graduated drawers, on shaped bracket feet, 106cm wide, 61cm deep, 88cm high. £8,000-£12,000 The above lot displays characteristics seen on furniture by or attributable to Thomas Chippendale and his workshop. Beyond the finely book-matched veneers to the front and high timber quality used on the top, other elements of construction and design relate to documented Chippendale cabinet furniture. The handles, feet, central slide pull, drawer construction as well as use of a red wash to the back and underside are all features commonly seen on Chippendale workshop output. The above lots employs Chippendale’s ‘standard’ handle, his favourite early neo-classical handle pattern, illustrated in C.Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, Bristol, 1978, p.146, pl.263. Although Chippendale’s plainer mahogany furniture has been historically more difficult to attribute, the furniture supplied to Lord Pembroke for Pembroke House around the same time as he was supplying furniture for Dumfries House and furniture to Ninian Home for Paxton House which have all been key in the study of this part of the workshop’s output, see C.Gilbert, ibid., p. 271272. A group of chests linked to Chippendale at Dumfries do not appear in his extant bills but are tentatively attributed to him on the grounds of certain constructional features. The argument for the Dumfries chests being by Chippendale is backed up by the existence of a linen press at the house which bears many of the features of the group of chests and for which a Chippendale bill of 1763 is thought to relate (see Christie’s proposed contents sale of Dumfries House, 12-13 July 2007, lot 236) and the accompanying introduction by Rufus Bird in the aforementioned catalogue. The chest offered here is links to a documented group of serpentine chests at Mersham-le-Hatch, Wilton and Paxton all of which are illustrated in C.Gilbert, ibid., pp.116-117. The Paxton chest is of very similar dimensions and drawer configuration, the Mersham chest has the same rounded moulding around the base and a brushing slide and he Wilton chest employs the ‘standard’ handle pattern. thepedestal.com

George Seddon took his son-in-law Thomas Shackleton into the business around 1790 and they traded as Seddon, Son and Shackleton from 150 Aldersgate Street, at one point employing over four hundred men. The firm traded under different names, reflecting which family members were involved in the business; they were styled Seddon, Son and Shackleton for only eight years, from 1790 until Thomas Shackleton (George Seddon’s son-in-law) left to go into partnership with George Oakley in 1798. The firm’s painted furniture is particularly well known from two surviving documented commissions, Hauteville House, St Peter Port, Guernsey (179*?) and Bridwell House, Dorset (1792-3). The Hauteville commission included a set of eighteen painted satinwood elbow chairs with three matching window seats (see ‘A Catalogue and Index of old Furniture and Works of Decorative Art, Pt III’, M. Harris and Sons, p.386-9) and the Bridwell commission, a satinwood card table and pair of pembroke tables, see C.Gilbert and G.Beard The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds 1986, pp.796-7. Among early terms for the technique were ‘voiding’, ‘pen painting’ or ‘imitation ivory inlaying’. Sycamore, pale and closegrained, was the most usual timber, and the work was invariably protected with varnish. This has often mellowed with age, giving a black and yellow effect rather than the originally intended black and white. While some penwork was professionally generated, particularly among the products of the early nineteenth century Tunbridge industry, most examples appear to have been the work of ladies of leisure. Most of these date from between 1815 and 1850, and standards of technique vary widely. Penwork designs fall most often into one of three categories: neoclassical, chinoiserie or floral, and these themes frequently appear in combination. See N.Riley, Neo-Classical Designs in Penwork, Furniture History 2001, p.51-66. 108

It is thought that Wilson was a dealer in second hand furniture who used his stamp as a mean of identification and it has been been found on pieces also stamped by the firm of Gillows as well as pieces with a clear 18th century origin. One labelled piece has been recorded and suggests that the firm may well have had a cabinet making division. The business was continued by Mary Wilson after Thomas’ death in 1838.

By registering to bid and/or bidding you accept these terms. 2. We act as agent for the seller whose identity we will not disclose, unless otherwise stated. 3. When we offer items for consignment at auction, we will usually include in the auction listing a description of the lot and an estimate of potential sale value. Upon request we may also supply a condition report, which will be based on a visual inspection of each lot without disassembly or further investigation of physical condition, and on information available to us at the time. All information is provided after due consideration and to the best of our knowledge and experience, but cannot be taken as a statement of fact, a guarantee or statement of value or a guarantee or statement that mechanical or electrical parts are functioning correctly or at all. 4. All measurements provided are approximate. Colours of any image depicted in any printed catalogue, on our website or otherwise may not appear the same as colours perceived on physical inspection. 5. Lots offered for sale will be available for viewing in person at such place and times as are advertised before the auction. We always recommend inspection in person. 6. A registration form will be available on our website, at the auction or upon request and must be completed in advance of the auction by anyone wishing to bid. You may also be required to provide proof of identity and proof of address unless you are already known to us. A separate fee may be levied and separate registration may be required for online bidding, whether on our own or a third party platform. 7. Commission bids may be refused unless they have been entered on our registration form and accepted in advance of the auction. 8. We may at our discretion accept bids from someone acting on behalf of a third party, subject to receiving a letter of authorisation which is satisfactory to us. In the event that such a bid is successful we reserve the right to treat either the bidder or the third party as the successful bidder for all purposes including as regards obtaining payment for the lot. 9. Auctions are conducted according to our discretion and that of our auctioneer. We may refuse to allow access to the auction, refuse or accept any bid, alter the order of lots and/or the bidding in such way as we think best, withdraw any lot, reopen bidding after the hammer has fallen, determine who is the successful bidder, cancel the sale of any lot or otherwise regulate the auction and all associated proceedings as we deem most appropriate.
