The Patrick Donald Collection Born in Belfast just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Patrick Donald (Pat) started collecting at a very early age, inspired by two stone carved lions flanking the entrance to the Museum of Ulster. By the age of eight, he had become a familiar figure at the handful of antique and bric-a-brac shops in the vicinity of the museum. It always amused him to recount how, when his contemporaries were spending their pocket money on sweets and ice creams, he was scouring the shops for little and cheap items of interest. In the 1950s Pat and his family emigrated to Canada; he attended art school in Toronto, eventually finding work as a graphic and set designer with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), where his work put him into contact with actors, props masters and a whole host of production specialists. He was fascinated by the props that appeared in the studios; some of these he acquired for his collection, for his interest in collecting had lost none of its energy despite the change of country. He scoured antique shops, markets and shops throughout Ontario, adding substantially to his initial childhood collection. Shortly after starting work at the CBC, Pat developed an interest in martial arts, taking up Kendo, in which he achieved black belt level: this was his introduction to the traditions and customs of Japan and through it, Pat developed a fascination with Zen and the samurai tradition, Patrick Donald photographed at Southside House, Wimbledon

a new interest that changed the direction of his collecting completely. Within several years, he had amassed an evergrowing collection of Japanese swords, muskets, Buddhas, prints and miscellany of oriental artefacts. These he’d study in great detail, meticulously researching provenance and gradually building up an astonishing understanding of Japanese history and traditions. His collections, dramatically displayed in the basement den of his parents’ house, suited his talent for acting too. He was a considerably talented amateur thespian, to the extent that he regularly got oneliners and walkons in many CBC productions; this theatrical bent eventually found extraordinary fruition when he came to London, following the death of his mother in the early 1990s. Following his arrival in London, he bought a small terrace house, one of many built on a S.W. London estate originally intended to house returning World War One soldiers. This tiny, two up, two down house was destined to become the home of what was arguably one of the most unusual and eccentric collections in London. Pat had two rules about his possessions; the first was that only a very few trusted friends would ever be allowed in and the second was to cultivate a dilapidated air to the outside of the house, on the hunch that noone looking at the house from the outside would ever be able to guess what the house contained. By this time Pat had acquired a significant collection of Japanese samurai armour, clothing and weaponry, far outweighing his more general collection of antiquities and memorabilia. And as if the oriental collection was not enough, another passionate interest was about to be ignited.

Seeking to involve himself in life outside the house, Pat volunteered as a guide at Fulham Palace, where he became intrigued by the lives of the Bishops of London during the Jacobean period. Charles I became his great hero and Van Dyck his favourite artist. From that point his collecting took two distinct directions, the Jacobean and Oriental. At the palace he would dress in Jacobean costume, cultivated a ‘Van Dyckian’ beard to complete the impression of a Jacobean gentleman. Pat became a familiar figure on the London antique scene a diminutive, wiry fellow who walked over 100 miles a week, wrestling gigantic pieces of carved wood or stone work onto buses. Back at home, the downstairs of the house started to fill up with portraits of Charles I and his contemporaries, carved busts, ornate wood panelling, candle sconces and period furniture a deluge of acquisitions that threatened to crowd Pat out of his own home. His solution drew on his earlier years in television: he skilfully worked every single item into the most improbable but convincing stage set imaginable. thepedestal.com

Not everything was 17th century of course, but the way Pat organised the collection gave a supremely theatrical sense of being exactly of the period. Similarly his growing collection of armour, weapons and shrines were accommodated upstairs in a small sitting room, in which one would sit, overlooked by a mixture of menacing helmets, fully assembled suits of armour, racks of weapons and in contrast, a range of serene Zen Buddhas, set in shrines around the wall. In 1996 Pat left Fulham Palace, volunteering instead at Southside House, the London home of Major Malcolm Munthe MC, son of the noted Swedish physician author and physician Axel Munthe. The major needed guides and for Pat this was a dream come true. 17th century paintings adorned the walls, including Van Dycks, and the whole house, like his tiny terraced dwelling, was an eclectic, extravagant, and theatrical expression of the major’s perceptions of his family history. Pat blossomed at Southside House, combining his encyclopaedic knowledge of everything Jacobean with his own wry and highly mischievous Irish wit. When asked why he had never married - Pat had an unerring eye for the ladies - he replied that he had his own family already - his collections. Looking around he would say, “These are my children. Why should I want any others?”. Richard Surman Curator of Southside House, Wimbledon

Although there are extant bills from Chippendale for furniture at Dumfries house, the above mentioned group of chests do not feature, but are tentatively attributed to him on the grounds of certain constructional traits which can be seen on the lot offered here and include the laminated blocking behind the bracket foot, the red wash to the underside. The case for the Dumfries chests being by Chippendale is supported by the linen press at the house which shares these features with the aforementioned group of chests. A Chippendale bill dated 1763 is thought to refer (see Christies proposed contents sale of Dumfries House, 12-13 July 2007, lot 236) to the linen press and thus establishes the link to Chippendale.

We will charge a buyer’s fee of 25% on the first £50,000 of the hammer price of each lot, and 20% of any portion of such hammer price which is above £50,000, plus VAT. 16. Payment for each lot which you have purchased including all associated fees, charges and taxes is due no later than 7 calendar days after the auction. Payment can be made only by the registered bidder. Payment instructions will be given on the relevant invoice or invoices. Please note that we do not accept payment by credit card. 17. No lot will be released and legal title will not pass to you until we have received due payment in full of all sums owed to us by you. Risk in any lot for which you are the successful bidder will pass to you on the earlier of collection of the lot by you or on your behalf, or the due date for payment for such lot. 18. If you fail to make due payment for any lot we may, at our discretion and without limitation to other available remedies, charge you interest at the rate of 12% per annum; bring legal proceedings against you for the unpaid sum and all associated fees and costs including professional fees (“Unpaid Sums”); retain and sell ourselves or otherwise any other lots held by us which are your property or any sums otherwise payable by us to you and use such proceeds or sums to defray the Unpaid Sums; cancel the sale, re-offer the lot and claim any shortfall and any associated costs from you; and/or pass your identity and contact details to the seller so that they can pursue legal remedies against you directly. 19. All lots must be collected from our shipper as notified to you in the auction catalogue and otherwise, within 14 days after the auction. Storage and handling fees will be charged in relation to lots left uncollected after that date at the shipper’s standard rates from time to time. Any lots not collected within 90 days after the auction may be sold by us at our discretion, with the proceeds applied to cover all Unpaid Sums including storage and handling charges. In this event any surplus will be paid over to you, and we will claim any shortfall from you as an Unpaid Sum. 20. A lot which has been collected from our warehouse by you or a shipper acting on your behalf is deemed to have been delivered to you by us at the time of such collection. 21. Lots which we believe to be covered by the CITES regulations will be marked with ¥ in our catalogue, but we are not responsible for advising you on any import/export issues including without limitation CITES or the like, and customs and import fees and the like. We recommend that you acquaint yourself with any relevant issues before bidding, as we cannot accept liability for any information which we may provide you with. If you purchase a lot requiring an export license it is your responsibility to obtain it, and we cannot accept rescission of the sale or offer a refund if you are unable to so obtain a permit. 22. Each seller warrants that they are the legal owner of the lot and/or have the unencumbered right to sell the lot at auction and to pass title to the successful bidder. The seller shall not be liable in the event of breach of this warranty for any amount greater than the hammer price of the lot in question. We may be liable only to the successful bidder in the event of fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation by us and exclude all other liability to such bidder and all third parties to the fullest extent permitted by law. Nothing herein shall limit your rights if any under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, or exclude our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence. 23. General Terms: a. These terms are made and must be construed under English law and any disputes arising from them or from the Contract will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. b. All charges, fees, premiums and any other sums referred to herein or arising herefrom are stated net of Value Added Tax but are subject to VAT or the like at the rate or rates prevailing at the time of any transaction. VAT is not chargeable on the hammer price unless otherwise stated. c. We will hold and process your personal data according to the conditions, for the reasons and on the bases set out in our Privacy Policy which you may access here, and as envisaged by these terms and conditions. d. We retain copyright in all images and written and other materials prepared by us, which may not be used by you without our prior written consent.
