Executive Director Focus Hi Friends, Happy Fall! It is hard to believe that the long summer days are slowly turning into crisp fall mornings and the ever famous Pumpkin Spice Lattes are returning to your favorite coffee places in town. At SafeHaven, the staff looks forward to Fall as that means that “kitten season” is coming to an end. This past Spring and Summer we had over 300 cats and kittens in our foster care system and over 100 in our shelter at any one time. Because of our dedicated staff and our wonderful foster care providers, we saved more cats’ and kittens’ lives this season than the previous year. What a great end to the summer! Last year, more than 2,700 animals came through SafeHaven’s doors. Each one had a different story to tell and each one needed our kindness and compassion. Some were found as strays, such as Mary, who you’ll meet below. Some were owner surrenders and some traveled hundreds of miles from over-crowded shelters just to get a second chance here at SafeHaven, like Benito who came to SafeHaven all the way from Mexico!
Your donations, support, and generous hearts allow SafeHaven the privilege of helping each and every one of them. Fall is traditionally a time to reflect on what we are thankful for in our lives and I want each of you to know how thankful we are for you!
Chris Storm, Executive Director
MEET BIO! He is 5 years old and was given a lifesaving opportunity to find his forever home through a START “Rescue Me” transport from Mexico! In Mexico, he was looked over for so long and is hoping to have better luck here in Oregon. He is a sweet and energetic boy who has traveled a long way to meet you! He also wants to tell you that October is ‘Adopt a Shelter Dog’ Month and SafeHaven has some exciting ways to celebrate planned! Stay tuned for more information!
But truthfully, no matter how they got here—once they arrived, they stole our hearts and became part of the SafeHaven family. Every day, donors like you are the heroes in the story of each of these animals. The total cost of helping each animal that comes into SafeHaven is approximately $627 per pet. Adoption and intake fees make up about 40% of the total cost of care. But you, our supporters, donors, and friends, are their true guardian angels.
MEET OUR GST TEM RESIDENT Meet Mary! She came to SafeHaven as a stray all that way back in June of 2017. She is 2 years old and a big sweetie! She loves walks through the use of a harness, knows her name and would love a home to call her own. Mary has to wear a special cone due to a skin condition that makes her lick herself uncontrollably but she rocks her cone in style! Because of her skin condition, she needs medicine every few days and has to be on a special grain-free diet. Other than that, she is your average independent and cuddly cat. We think she would make a wonderful companion and hope to see her in a home home before the holidays! If you want to meet Mary, stop by SafeHaven to give her a chance. She is sure to knock your socks off with her personality! 1

Happy Bonded Pairs At SafeHaven Humane Society, animals are our number one priority. This means that if two animals come to us together as a ‘bonded pair’, we do everything in our power to keep them together and find a home that will love them both. In June 2018, we found homes for three sets of bonded pairs in just one week! Each pair had their own special story and we’re happy to report that these six dogs not only found their forever family, but stayed with their forever friend as well! Here are their stories.
JAZZY & JEWEL Mother & Daughter
These two sweet girls came to us on a Fetch Fido A Flight transport as a bonded pair in June. They are a mother and daughter duo who came from a neglect case in Oklahoma and between the two of them, produced 18 puppies! Before coming to Oregon, they did everything they could to survive with no food and stale, muddy rainwater as their only option. Their puppies were eventually rescued, but Jewel and Jazzy were left in a high-kill shelter. Luckily, these two were selected to come to Oregon for a second chance and, by the looks on their faces in this photo, they know they’ve found their forever family! They are two of the happiest dogs we’ve ever met, even though they had a rough start at life. Just look at those smiles! Adopted: July 3, 2018
POLKA DOT & PEPPER Sisters
Polka Dot and Pepper are two sisters who were surrendered to SafeHaven when their owner did not have enough time to give them. Luckily, they found their forever home in less than two weeks of being surrendered. Polka Dot and Pepper are both active, playful, and curious young dogs who are now in a home that suits them best. We’re so grateful to have found a home where they can stay together forever! Adopted: July 7, 2018
SISSIE & LITTLE BIT Best Friends
You may remember reading about Sissie and Little Bit in our Summer issue of the Pet Press. They originally came to SafeHaven as a bonded trio with their dear friend Lefty by their side and were fondly known as the ‘Three Amigos’. They were all 10 years old and had their own unique medical needs when they arrived at SafeHaven. Sadly, soon after arriving, Lefty was diagnosed with terminal cancer and unfortunately passed away. After Lefty’s passing, Sissie and Little Bit found their forever home! These two special dogs definitely deserved a happy ending and we’re sure Lefty would be so happy for them. Adopted: July 6, 2018 3
Happy Tails PET OF THE WEEK DOESN’T GO UNNOTICED JJ was the KRKT Pet of the Week when she was adopted in October 2017. Her family came to SafeHaven ‘just to look’ like so many of our adopters do...but sometimes, your new cat or dog will pick you! Here is what JJ’s new dad had to say about JJ: “JJ was the SafeHaven Pet of the Week. After stopping in one day, while my wife was at work, I reminded my daughter we were just there to look. JJ was a very timid girl. We were told she was a transfer from Oklahoma and it seemed that life to that point was pretty rough for her. We hoped we could give her the life she deserved and decided to take her home. After just a couple days, JJ was already part of the family. Still timid at times but you couldn’t give her enough love. After about nine months, she is still working on trusting strangers but she’s warmed up to extended family and friends. She is inseparable, best friends with our old yellow lab. She’s been camping, swimming, played in the snow and we haven’t found much she doesn’t enjoy, besides a bath. We are so happy to call her part of our family and everyday you can see her appreciation in return. Thank you SafeHaven for the newest member of our family.”
A NEW FAMILY MEMBER FITS RIGHT IN Ashley Standridge and her boyfriend, Ian Rogalla have nothing but incredible stories to tell about their newly adopted kitten, Diego. Here is what Ashley shared with us: “We are so thrilled we decided to stop by SafeHaven to find our new family member. Diego caught my attention the moment I saw him. There was someone in the room holding him like a little baby and tickling his tummy and he looked so affectionate and loving. We went to the next playroom to play with the kittens that were there, but I still had my eyes set on little Diego. Once the young woman left Diego’s room, I asked my boyfriend to run out and ask if she was planning to adopt him. She told us that she was just visiting and I was so excited to hear that! We played with him for a while to get to know him and it didn’t take long for him to steal both our hearts. I am so very thankful we chose to adopt him that day! When we first arrived home he took an hour or two to explore, but it didn’t take long for him to warm up to us. He is the most loving cat we’ve ever known. He loves sitting up on our shoulders and cuddling his head under our chins, purring all the while. Diego’s new favorite spot in our home recently is our bathroom sink, where he can often be found napping. He brings a warm and complete feeling to our home; our hearts have never been so full!”
A GEM FROM FETCH FIDO A FLIGHT Crystal is one of the lucky dogs selected for a flight from Oklahoma to Oregon on a ‘Fetch Fido A Flight’ transport in June 2018. SafeHaven works closely with this non-profit rescue to save animals from high-kill shelters in Oklahoma, who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance at a family or a life. These animals are always special to us and we love to share their happy tales! Here’s what Crystal’s family had to say about her: “We adopted Crystal in July. We had gone to SafeHaven a week prior and fell in love with her, though she was on hold. Around a week later we got a call saying that the hold fell through, so we went to the shelter and adopted her that day! At the time, she was on the lighter side and has since put on the few pounds that she needed. When we first brought her home we were unsure how our other dogs, Willie and Darby, would take to her. To our excitement, she and Willie have become the best of friends and play non-stop! She has adjusted to her new home very well and we are happy with our new addition to the family.” 4

Business Spotlight
KEEPING THE ANIMALS IN MIND As a non-profit organization in any community, you quickly learn that companies of all kinds are willing to help out however possible. Assurant is a national call center that specializes in a variety of insurance, with a location in Albany. Assurant has organized two incredibly successful donation drives for SafeHaven since 2017. Assurant advertises the donation drives in-house and at the end, SafeHaven goes to their business with an animal or two to pick up the donations and give them our greatest thanks. What better way to express gratitude than some time with puppies and kittens? SafeHaven has stopped by with a litter of puppies, as well as kittens. Assurant was able to procure some great items to donate that SafeHaven was in need of, like heating pads, kitten formula, toys, cleaning supplies, and food. They’ve also recently started organizing groups of employees to come out and volunteer at the shelter. We truly appreciate this business stepping up and hosting these donation drives for SafeHaven! We can’t thank them enough and hope to continue working with them to save homeless animals.
DISTRIBUTING LOVE As many people in our community know, Lowe’s has a distribution center and they have been instrumental in helping SafeHaven in many ways over the past several years. The employees that oversee damaged goods have reached out to us several times to donate perfectly usable items that Lowe’s cannot sell in their store for various reasons. They choose to donate these items to us because they are all animal lovers and appreciate the work we do. Lowe’s Distribution Center has graciously donated many “big-ticket” items, including some that will ultimately go into the live auction at our annual “Rescue Roundup” happening on September 29th, 2018. With generous donations like this, SafeHaven will be able to raise funds to help us continue saving animals and, ultimately, finding them a forever home!
GET INVOLVED When your company partners with SafeHaven Humane Society, it is a win-win! That’s because being a good corporate citizen is also a good business decision. Business partner benefits include gaining marketing and public relations opportunities, confirming your company’s values with community members, employees, and clients, experiencing satisfaction by supporting the animals and people in our community, and attaining additional exposure at SafeHaven events and fundraisers. Your business can partner with SafeHaven Humane Society in many different ways to help animals in need. If you are interested, contact us at marketing@safehavenhumane.com.

Development MEET CAROL JO HAHN To say Carol Jo Hahn is an incredible asset to SafeHaven Humane Society would never be enough. Her story about working with SafeHaven and everything she has done for the animals starts with compassion and creativity. She has been helping SafeHaven since we were “the little shelter that could” out on Highway 34 and has stayed involved by fostering, volunteering, giving monthly as a part of our Inner Circle Caregivers program, and more! Carol Jo began her journey with SafeHaven in the 1990s when she was a teacher at North Albany Middle School. She recalled one class in particular in 1997 that was small enough that she could take students to visit the shelter, where they volunteered and spent time with the animals. Carol said “I thought by helping others, it was a great way to build their confidence.” Not only did they spend many days with the animals, but that class and many others also hosted fundraisers for SafeHaven such as car washes, bake sales, and more! By the end of 1997, that class in particular showed great improvements in their academic skills. Carol Jo attributed it, in large part, to spending so much time volunteering with the animals at SafeHaven. Carol Jo’s desire to make a difference doesn’t end there, however. Her passion is to “give back locally and globally”. She also began fostering animals for SafeHaven in 2008. She has fostered many dogs, mostly small mixed breeds, since then. Her current dog, Cali, was her first momma dog she fostered and decided to keep when Cali’s first two adoptions fell through. She knew that Cali had chosen her. Carol Jo has also adopted another SafeHaven dog, Anni. Over the years, she has helped SafeHaven with multiple litters of puppies! Along with fostering and being a generous donor, Carol Jo has gotten many groups involved in volunteering, including her church group from South Albany Community Church. They have spent time at the shelter, 9
working especially hard to improve the exterior grounds of the building. That’s one of the things we love about all of our supporters -- they reach out within their own groups and raise awareness about the good that SafeHaven does in the community and about the many ways to contribute to saving the lives of homeless animals right Carol Jo and Cali on Cali’s 11th birthday! here in Linn County. Without generous donors like Carol Jo, SafeHaven simply would not be the outstanding organization it is today. It truly takes a village and we’re happy to have Carol Jo Hahn in our corner when it comes to saving thousands of lives each year.

COVER PHOTO WINNERS Our cover photo winners for this issue are Rick and Bernice Franklin, long-time supporters of SafeHaven Humane Society. We were lucky enough to be able to visit their animals at their home and learn more about their involvement with SafeHaven. Rick and Bernice became involved with SafeHaven through Jim and Dena Healy, who asked them years ago to help with an event. They have been supporters ever since. All of their animals are SafeHaven alumni! On the cover of this issue is Tanner who is 3 ½ years old. They also have Skeeter (Heeler mix in photo) who is 9 years old. Skeeter was adopted in December of 2010 and Tanner was adopted in December of 2015. Tanner enjoys going down to their pond to chase frogs and critters and Skeeter likes to retrieve sticks out of the pond. Both Tanner & Skeeter love to play fetch. Two cats, tuxedo Missy and tiger-striped Jasper, are also part of the happy Franklin clan. 10
Humane Education SOMETHING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Brothers Andrew Allard (10) and Zack Allard (7) are certainly familiar faces at SafeHaven. They have been attending Pets and Pajamas Movie Nights for the past 2 years. In addition to those fun events, their whole family has volunteered at the shelter to help with cleaning and pulling weeds. In July, they attended SafeHaven’s Family Day of Service as a family and not only gave the shelter a makeover, but also spent time with the animals for socialization. Andrew and Zack’s mom added “We do want to start volunteering more often!” The boys first became involved at SafeHaven through the help of their grandmother who signed them up for their first Pets and Pajamas movie night. Since then, they have been regulars at the movie nights and enjoy coming each month. Andrew said his favorite memory is the first movie night he attended and making new friends. Zack, however, doesn’t have one favorite memory. He just loves it all! They have learned many new things about working with animals, including proper and safe behavior when meeting new dogs. We love to hear stories about families getting involved at SafeHaven. There really is something here for the whole family, no matter what age!
GIVING BACK KNOWS NO AGE Meet Amelia! Amelia has participated in clubs, as well as camps, at SafeHaven. She also volunteered at the shelter with her Girl Scout Troop, and has recently expanded her resume to include “charitable giving”. She’s a busy and very compassionate girl. She has helped the shelter by bringing in cleaning supplies, toys, treats, and food and is just one of the many examples of youth in our community leading the way to a more humane society.
GET YOUR FAMILY INVOLVED We believe the best way to ensure a more humane society is to teach kids compassion and respect for all animals! We are pleased to offer a variety of humane education programs for youth of all ages in our community.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please call 541.928.6280 or email HumaneEd@safehavenhumane.com. 11
PUPPY YOGA
Community
AT SAFEHAVEN In 2017, SafeHaven introduced Kitty Yoga where participants could attend a yoga class at SafeHaven while playing with kittens who were getting ready to be adopted. Kitty Yoga was such a hit that we decided to try Puppy Yoga! On July 13th, the first Puppy Yoga class was held and we had a great turnout for the inaugural class. The spots filled up in less than 24 hours when it was announced on SafeHaven’s Facebook page in early July. Apple, Tina, Molly & Cinnamon were the lucky puppies that attended the class. Prior to the class, they had been living in their foster home where their mom gave birth after coming to SafeHaven on a transport mid-pregnancy. They were 8 weeks old and ready for adoption. The following day, they were available to be adopted and all went to loving homes within the week. Because of the enthusiastic response, SafeHaven offered Puppy Yoga again in August and it went great! We will definitely be continuing Puppy Yoga, as well as Kitty Yoga, as they are great fundraisers for the shelter and are also a wonderful way to socialize the animals before becoming available for adoption.
SAFEHAVEN GETS A MAKEOVER On July 28th, the South Albany Community Church joined us to give the front of the shelter a much needed ‘face-lift’. A group of kind hearted adults and children gave up their Saturday to help us out and we are so grateful! They completed a large variety of tasks including laying new bark dust, pulling weeds and even trimming shrubs. Unfortunately, tasks such as these can often fall to the bottom of the list for our employees when the animals and visitors need their attention, so it is wonderful to know we have groups of volunteers willing to lend a helping hand where we need it. If you are interested in helping out as a group at SafeHaven, please contact Katie by emailing volunteer@safehavenhumane.com to get started!

Volunteer Spotlight CONNIE & DON GROVES SafeHaven is happy to introduce Connie and Don Groves as our Volunteer Spotlight! We are so fortunate to have Connie and Don as devoted volunteers. They really do so much for SafeHaven and the animals on a regular basis. Connie and Don moved to Oregon from Colorado in 2014. Since they couldn’t have an animal in their new home and had previously owned dogs and cats their whole lives, they were searching for a way to get their “animal fix”. Don helping out with an ASPCA transport. They learned of SafeHaven and immediately knew they wanted volunteer.
place in their heart. Occasionally, they even get to see some of the dogs they volunteered with at events when they are out in the community! One of their favorite Community Outreach events is “Pet Your Stress Away” at Linn-Benton Community College, held during finals week to help students with stress. They enjoy taking adoptable dogs to the college campus and meeting the students that stop by to visit with the animals. Connie and Don have even adopted from SafeHaven! They adopted Captain Butterscotch (now Einstein) for their granddaughter who lives in California. When they owned dogs in the past, they told us they always found them at local shelters. Connie added, “before Charlie (one of their shelter dogs), we always wanted a pure bred; but after Charlie, we can’t imagine not having a mixed or rescued dog.”
Over the past 4 years, Connie and Don have been continuously involved working with the animals at the shelter, and also at Community Outreach events such as ‘Santa Paws’ and others. Connie and Don are always eager to help at our big fundraising events throughout the year, such as ‘Rescue Roundup’ that happens every fall. In June of this year, SafeHaven opened a new Gift and Thrift store in Lebanon and we can’t say enough about how much Connie and Don have helped get that store up and running. Several times a week, they sort donations, price items, and even stage items throughout the store. This has been a huge help to us since we are still in need of volunteers who Connie selling SafeHaven merch at a local event. want to help out in Lebanon. We asked the couple what their favorite part of volunteering at SafeHaven was and they replied with “seeing all the dogs” and told us about several that will always hold a 13
Einstein (Captain Butterscotch) with his parents, Ciera and Andrew, living his happiest life in Orange, California.
For more information on how you can volunteer at the shelter or at one of our Gift & Thrift locations, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Katie Bateman at volunteer@safehavenhumane.com.

IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES In 2018, our goal is to build an on-site Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite. The addition of the Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite to our facility will improve our ability to care for the animals that pass through our doors.
The Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite will allow us to: - Save more lives - Decrease stress put on animals requiring spay or neuter as it will be on site - Provide high quality, more personalized medical care to shelter pets - Expand our partnerships, including teaching and training opportunities; gaining valuable experience in the underserved field of Shelter Medicine - Safely isolate animals that are too young, injured, or ill for adoption - Provide critical, timely medical treatment for shelter animals through the addition of a veterinarian on staff
We have already raised $150,000 of our $400,000 goal! Consider purchasing a ‘Fifty Shades of Spay” shirt to contribute to this dream. All proceeds from this shirt go towards making the surgery suite a reality. Purchase yours for only $20 at either of our Gift & Thrift locations or at the shelter!
