Executive Director Focus Dear Friends: Like most of you, I am so happy that many of the COVID restrictions have lifted. The last two years have seen so many challenges, but for shelters around the United States, COVID restrictions did have an unexpected surprise for those of us in animal welfare: Shelters were empty due to increased adoptions and people lining up to foster animals in need to keep them out of the shelter system.
We are finding creative ways to help individuals rehome their pets. Our new Home to Home program will help give support and guidance to people who need to rehome their personal pets, without ever having to surrender them to a shelter.
Today, as restrictions have mostly lifted, we are seeing a drastic change once again. More pets are entering shelters than shelters have the room or resources for. Shelters are now reaching capacity at alarming rates and most are still working with fewer staff members than they had prior to the pandemic. Shelters and animal care workers are being stretched to their limits. It’s heartbreaking to see what so many shelters are now facing as their new reality.
We are working hard to place animals into foster homes so more animals can be helped.
According to Paula Fasseas, the founder and chair of PAWS Chicago, in her experience, the current crisis has little to do with people giving up their pandemic pets, and more to do with existing pet owners who relinquish their animals after experiencing life changes brought on by the pandemic. “When there is a change, animals are always the victim of change”, she said.
We are working with our local community to help find alternative solutions to pet surrender.
Together, dedicated staff, volunteers, and donors continue to make the work we do every day possible. While most people are preparing for summer vacations and weekend get aways, SafeHaven will continue to be preparing to help as many animals as possible through the summer months. So, how has this shift truly impacted SafeHaven? We are getting rescue requests every day. Our shelter partners are begging for our help. In one day alone, our Rescue Coordinator received pleas from 10 shelters. Over 50 animals needing someone to say “yes” to their rescue as the shelter was overwhelmed. In a week's time, we had over 150 requests for help! We are working with fewer staff members. Our employees are amazing! Each and every one stepping up to take on more tasks, smiling when some days they feel like crying, and always giving their best for each animal in our care.

Warmer weather means more barbecues and get togethers with family and friends. This means you might find yourself with more cans and bottles. But before you take them to the recycle bin, let us fill you in on an easy way to help out homeless pets! It’s as simple as 1-2-3. Follow these simple steps to recycle your cans and bottles all while saving animals and helping them find perfect forever homes.
GET. Pick up your blue Bottle Drop bag from SafeHaven (the shelter, either Gift & Thrift store, or we can mail one to you)!
FILL. Fill your blue Bottle Drop bag with recyclable bottles and cans. DROP. Bring your full Bottle Drop bag to SafeHaven or to ANY Bottle
Drop Center in Oregon. As long as the bag is from SafeHaven, the funds will be allocated to the animals in our care. Our grand total from BottleDrop for 2021 was $11,761.62. This was a huge jump from $4,096.00 in 2020. Can you help make 2022 our biggest year yet?
SafeHaven Foster Failure Sisters "Yip, it’s me, Cali. I am the lovable Chihuahua
on the cover. My sister is the bothersome terrier mix Ella, also pictured, but I will give you the scoop on ME. Thirteen years ago last month, I nosed my way to SafeHaven with my sweet newborn, Buddy. We were bussed from San Jose through the Rescue Me program. SafeHaven fetched us a foster home where we thrived. It was so wonderful to have laps on which to sit as I dog-napped between times with my boy. As Buddy grew, we enjoyed the dog daze of summer. Ruff times were not part of our schedule. After eight weeks or so, I was ready for Buddy to scamper on to a forever home. This one was mine, or so I believed. Then, I began hearing tales about a move for me. A couple of runs were made to SafeHaven where, each time, I was to be left with a forever family. It was ruff, but thankfully each adoption fell through. Finally, my foster fam realized I was the perfect addition. Besides, Anni, also a SafeHaven adoptee, was there; we could be forever sisters. Hot diggity! Through the years it has been a kennel around here with various canines coming and going. As pups are born, it gets zoo-like with woofs, whines, and sometimes deep doo doo! Then, nearly two years ago, another tail began."
"I’m Ella, aka Eloise. After arriving to the
shelter via the START Rescue bus, I bounded into Cali’s digs where I birthed and mothered a litter of four. Caring and playing with my pups delighted me. Doggy heaven! Later, though, I doggedly accompanied my foster folks to the shelter. My pups stayed. Director Chris noticed my frightened face as I clung to my foster mom, and I was added to the shelter’s Facebook adoption page with a “Currently in Foster Care” designation. Chris had it in mind that I needed more time to groom my fosters. I used the doggy door, allowed Cali to remain the alpha, and minded well. I cuddled and nuzzled my way into their hearts. Then, my fosters had me scratch a note to Chris giving the scoop. I begged to become a foster failure like Cali. Here I am, a success tail!"
Happy Tails COOPER Meet Cooper! This sweet, gentle boy came to SafeHaven after his owner passed away. He was dropped off at a vet’s office in California. To avoid the overpopulated shelters in California, START Animal Rescue was able to bring Cooper to Oregon for a second chance. Cooper had been through a lot by the time he got to Oregon and was missing the comfort of having a person or family of his own. He was also recovering from a flea and food allergy at this time and working on growing back his beautiful coat. Cooper was depressed while at the shelter and caused us all to campaign for him a little extra. Cooper was finally adopted at the end of April by Phyllis Lefevers. We're happy to report, he is doing wonderfully with his new family!
BEAUTY & THE BEAR Bear and Beauty came to SafeHaven on a transport from Oklahoma at the beginning of April. While they weren’t stated as a bonded pair, they were friends, so when they arrived, we let them live in a large viewing room together. Both Bear and Beauty are FIV positive cats. One day, someone came in looking for two cats and chose to adopt them together, even though they weren't listed as a bonded pair! Their new family, the Greenwalds, told us, “Our two older kitties passed away recently and our house feels so empty. We were looking for a pair of cats to adopt together and we saw Bear and Beauty on the website. We fell in love instantly and are so excited to bring them home and give them a loving and safe forever home!”
WHAT IS FIV? Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is one of the most common infectious diseases of cats around the world. FIV attacks the immune system, leaving the cat vulnerable to many other infections. Though there is no cure for FIV, recent studies suggest that cats with FIV commonly live average life spans, as long as they are not also infected with feline leukemia virus. This means that as long as FIV cats are cared for in a home and certain precautions are taken, they can live happy, long lives with their families!

ANIMAL ADVENTURE CAMPS ARE BACK! This year we are pleased to offer five separate opportunities for kids entering Kindergarten through 5th grade to visit the shelter for a day of fun, friends, and fur. Camps will be full of crafts and activities that center around a unique theme related to the animal welfare world. Development THANK YOU BENTLEY'S! We would like to send a HUGE thank you to our friends at Bentley's Coffee and to every single one of you who stopped by on May 6 and 7 to celebrate their grand opening in Albany! Bentley's Coffee was able to donate $10,391.00 to the animals from those two days! They shared with us the breakdown of the donation total: $4,143.00 in special one dollar drinks were ordered and guests donated an additional $1,600.00! Bentley’s Coffee also sold $4,648.00 in regular drinks that were not part of the original fundraiser, BUT, Brandon (the owner, pictured on the right holding Bentley) was so blown away by how much love you showed them that he wanted to donate ALL of that as well! WAITING ON FOREVER 700 days. For 700 days Remy has been in our care looking for her forever home. Remy has officially become our longest resident ever here at SafeHaven. Every day our staff hold out hope that this spunky, sweet, amazing girl will find her happily-ever-after with her forever family. To be perfectly honest, Remy isn’t the dog for everyone. Once she is comfortable with you, she is your best friend, but Remy has only known stability here at the shelter and the unknown scares her. She takes time to warm up to new people and situations. She won’t be a dog you meet once and go home with the same day.
Remy will need someone willing to continue to work with her. She most likely will need to be the only animal in the home and would thrive with adults and older children. Despite her challenges, Remy is amazing. She has accepted the staff as part of her family. She sees them coming and immediately wags her tail and knows she is going to get attention. She would spend hours playing in the yard (although she’s not the biggest fan of the rain) and nothing makes her happier than playing ball. Remy holds a little piece of all of our hearts and we hope that someday the right person comes around for her. Learn more about Remy on our website and please help spread Remy’s story.

Foster Care
NOW OFFERING ORIENTATIONS You asked and we heard you! SafeHaven is now offering Foster Care Orientations! These will be held twice a month to learn about fostering, how to care for bottle baby kittens, how to market fosters for adoption, and more! Join us if you have ever had an interest in becoming a foster parent or just want to learn more about what fostering with SafeHaven is like. Orientation is encouraged, but not required, for new foster parents. Have you ever been curious about fostering a pet? Currently, there are over 200 animals in SafeHaven foster homes. KITTENS SUPPLIES STILL NEEDED This is just one example of the many stories of cats and kittens affected by kitten season. At the end of April, we got a call that six young kittens were found in a taped up box on the side of the road. A good Samaritan brought them to us. When our medical team examined them, they appeared to be healthy, so we then found a loving foster home to look after the kittens as they grew. The foster parent let us know that the kittens transitioned from a syringe to bottle feeding on the first day and were such good eaters! We are receiving calls about pregnant cats and young kittens almost daily. If you'd like to help our dedicated team of foster parents who help us care for our tiniest friends, our most needed supplies at this time are dry kitten food (Purina if possible), KMR kitten formula, and Miracle Nipples. RAIN OR SHINE After being postponed for two years, the annual Strawberry Festival was back this year. The Lebanon Strawberry Festival is a community wide celebration held each year during the first full weekend in June. This year, Johnny, Twiggy, Olga, and Inga joined us as we participated in the parade. Despite the gray skies and that good ol' Oregon rainfall, we had a great time seeing all the friendly faces in Lebanon for this wonderful event. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers!
GOOD NEIGHBORS, GOOD FRIENDS Just a few years ago, our good friends at Hendrix Heating and Air announced they were moving and, lucky for us, just down the road from our shelter! On Thursday, May 26th, Hendrix Heating and Air hosted an Open House and we were excited to join! Along with an ice cream truck, games, a bounce house, and live music, SafeHaven was there with furry friends available for adoption. Two fun-loving puppies, Mentis and Wrigley, charmed everyone who visited. Since this day, both puppies have found forever homes!

HOT WEATHER SAFETY TIPS We all love spending the long, sunny days of summer outdoors with our furry companions, but being overeager in hot weather can spell danger. To prevent your pet from overheating, take these simple precautions provided by ASPCA experts:
Visit the vet for a spring or early-summer checkup. Make sure your pets get tested for
Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. Not only can it lead to fatal heat stroke, it
Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors.
Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool—not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce
heartworm if they aren’t on year-round preventative medication.
Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not to over-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot.
Know the symptoms of overheating in pets,
which include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. Symptoms can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees.

Keep walks during these times to a minimum.
Volunteer Spotlight MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS Meet Karen, a SafeHaven volunteer since February 2020. Read her words below to learn more about Karen and her experience volunteering: "I started volunteering at SafeHaven two years ago, after retiring from a 43-year nursing profession. Volunteering in my community was my focus after retirement. My family, including our pets, and friends are the center of my life. I've been married to my childhood sweetheart, Stephen, for over 43 years. We spend as much time as possible with our two children and three grandchildren. We also enjoy spending time at our beach home in Waldport. The majority of our years together have also included three amazing shelter/rescue dogs, Josh, Libby, and Cisco. What is your favorite part about volunteering? "I love spending time in an organization that welcomes everyone that comes through the doors and greets them like family. The love of animals is evident in SafeHaven staff and volunteers." What advice do you have for new volunteers? "Ask questions and learn from those around you. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience in the SafeHaven walls. Also, don't be afraid to try volunteering in several areas/positions. There are opportunities to shadow many areas - try some out."

We truly couldn’t do all we do without them. Their hard work, dedication, and kindness makes such a powerful impact on the lives of so many animals that come through our doors. Community HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAELEE! Maelee Dunaway’s fundraiser for her 5th birthday has come to an end. Last month, she and her mom brought in ALL of these donations for the shelter, plus some additional items for the Gift and Thrift stores! Maelee was able to complete all of her birthday goals including: raising $1,330, donating four cart loads of items, and helping one cat and one dog find a home. Way to go Maelee! Your dedication to helping homeless animals is truly inspiring.
PUPS & PINTS IS BACK! Our friends at The Barn at Hickory Station have brought back their Pups & Pints weekly event! Every Monday from May-September they are donating $1.00 for every beer or cider sold from 4-close. You can even bring your pup to hang out with you! The Barn at Hickory Station is located at 640 Hickory St NW in Albany.
PET THERAPY In April, we had the pleasure of giving a tour to residents from The Oaks at Lebanon Retirement and Assisted Living. Everyone had a blast and the animals loved meeting some new friends! Many seniors who live in nursing homes or retirement communities are unable to have a pet companion, so to ensure seniors get regular interactions with pets, SafeHaven visits senior communities each month with some of our adoptable animals and/or our alums. TIPS ON HOW TO THRIFT SHOP LIKE A BOSS 1. Give yourself a huge high five for choosing to shop at one of SafeHaven’s Gift & Thrift stores! By shopping at either location, not only are you going to find one-of-a-kind treasures, but you are contributing to the rescuing of thousands of animals each year that would otherwise have no options for a forever family. 2. Dress comfortably. Thrift shopping can take more time than going to the mall or your local Target. You’ll want to be able to spend as much time as possible scanning each section and getting through everything, as there is so much to see at both of our stores. 3. Get to know the Thrift Store employees and volunteers. Our staff and volunteers are some of the nicest people in town and if you are looking for something specific, chances are, they’ll be able to help you out! 4. Check the Daily Deals! At both SafeHaven Gift & Thrift stores, there is always a great deal to be had. Every day is a new Daily Deal and if you are looking for something specific, like furniture for example, you’ll be able to see when the best day is to shop.
