Executive Director Focus Dear Friends: Whether you are a devoted dog lover or crazy about cats, there is always someone at SafeHaven waiting to meet you. More than 12 million American households have adopted a pet since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in March 2020, according to the American Pet Products Association. It became clear that people turned to pets for companionship and love during a time of turmoil. At SafeHaven we have always known how wonderful pets are! Seven days a week, 365 days a year, we focus all of our attention, resources, and love to finding homes for pets in need. The puppies and the kittens are easy. They win the hearts of potential adopters quickly and easily but, often, some very special pets are over looked time and time again. As friends of SafeHaven and animal lovers, I ask you to spread the word about these special pets. With all of us working together to help them find homes, I just know we can make it happen! Meet Rogue: So sweet and gentle, a shy senior dog who came to us on a transport from Madras, Oregon. Rogue has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite. So why has he been at SafeHaven for two months? You see, Rogue is a talker when visitors come to his kennel. And he is a big boy. Unlike the tail wagging and tenderness you'll see when you visit with him in a yard, he tends to give less than the best first impression. But that's just the thing -- in a comfortable and happy home, the Rogue you would get is the Rogue we all know and love. Animals like him deserve a second look.
Possibly. But we like to think it's because her purr-fect person hasn't walked through the doors yet. This sweet girl loves everyone, kids, cats, dogs, and anyone else that will give her a snuggle and has years to share with her person. Meet Hyperion: He doesn’t let his medical condition stop him. He is a very loving kitty who has been diagnosed with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and is now in search of his forever home. Hyperion adores other kitties and would love to go home to another FeLV + kitty, if possible. Some of his favorite activities are getting cheek pets from his friends here at SafeHaven and getting lots of treats, of course! So you see, Hyperion deserves a loving home just like any of the other kitties, even if it does take a little longer to find. Finding homes for healthy, adoptable pets is always rewarding. But there is some extra magic in finding a home for a pet that has waited patiently a little longer than the rest. That's where you come in. If you can't adopt a pet right now, we encourage you to help spread the word about these amazing dogs and cats or any of the other animals in our facility. Tell your friends, unconditional love is waiting right down the road at SafeHaven! For our furry friends,
Meet Miss Kitty: The best office assistant you could ask for! Loves to work on the computer and sleep in your lap at break time and is one of the cuddliest cats we've met. So why has she been here since April? Could it be because she is 12 years old?

In 2020, this program alone brought over $4,000 to the animals at SafeHaven and ensured they were taken care of until they found their forever home.
The Life and Times of Penny Lane Friedman This is a story with a sad beginning but a very happy ending.

Penny had found her “forever home”.
On September 29, 2009, we lost our “daughter”, Shaina, to a sudden heart attack. She was adopted from SafeHaven and was our constant companion for twelve years. As you can imagine, my wife, Lori, and I were distraught. We soon realized that the void in our lives could only be filled by another dog. But what dog? We wanted a Goldilocks dog: not too large, not too small but just right. So, we journeyed back to SafeHaven (the old site on Route 20) to find our new child.
Penny immediately became a member of the family. As a matter of fact, we sometimes call her Bruce Springsteen because she is “the Boss”. She loves to play fetch with the ball and ride in the car. She is very adept at letting us know what she wants, be it food, a snack, go outside and play, or just a scratch. We have a morning routine. She gets belly scratches and I get kisses. If I do not wake up quickly enough, Penny will lick my face then whine and finally pull off the covers. Like I said, she gets her way. She knows that she is spoiled.
As I wandered around the kennels, I spotted someone who looked just perfect. I knew that was the case when she woofed at me. I brought her out to show her to Lori who agreed that she might be the one. Upon investigation, we found out that Ash (Penny’s original name) had been found as a young stray. Unfortunately, her family had to put her up for adoption. Their loss was our gain. Penny was waiting to be adopted for about a year. We took her home for a few days and quickly realized that she could and would take Shaina’s place in our hearts. We then returned to SafeHaven and completed the adoption process on November 11, 2009. She was ours and we were hers.
As she has aged, her eyesight is growing dim and her hearing is fading. She also is not as steady on her feet as she once was and usually needs assistance to get up on the furniture. No matter, she can still play with the ball. She will always be our baby. We cannot thank Chris, Osalyn, and the gang at SafeHaven enough. Two wonderful children have joined our family because of them.

Happy Tails DOUBLE THE LOVE When a pair of animals comes into our care who are bonded and would likely not thrive apart, we do everything in our power to keep them together. While it may take a little while longer to find that perfect forever home, we believe it is best for the future of the animals. Buddy and Milo came to SafeHaven early in 2021 when their owner could no longer care for them. Luckily, they found their forever home quickly! Here is the story from their new parents: "Two years after losing a dog that was very close to our hearts, we decided we should adopt a rescue dog. The day we went to SafeHaven, we originally had scheduled a visit with a dog that was fun, cute, and pretty young. After finding out he needed surgery and wouldn't be able to come home with us for over a month, we decided to look around to see who needed a home that day. We walked up to Buddy and Milo and they were just so cute together. Buddy was barking and Milo wagging his tail! When we found out Buddy was 12 years old, that was the moment we knew they needed a good forever home. We adopted them and brought them home the same day! Milo was timid at first, but Buddy knew he was home. The first thing he did was jump on our couch, stretched out, and asked for belly rubs. It's been a few months now and they have brought so much love and joy into our lives. To call them an odd couple wouldn't do them justice, and they love each other in a way that inspires us. Buddy will get worried if Milo stays in the backyard too long after dark and will get up and whine at us incessantly just to bring him in. Milo cleans Buddy's lips because they are so floppy that food gets stuck and Buddy can't reach it. They have vastly different personalities and have so much love for one another! Buddy love walks, naps, talking back, belly rubs, and enjoying the nature in our garden. Milo loves brain games, chasing birds and rabbits, playing fetch, and his car rides a lot. Milo and Buddy had already been returned by another family previous to us and, as much as it breaks our hearts to hear about stories like theirs, we are so happy they did because these two beautiful boys were a perfect fit for our home and have more than filled that empty spot we had before going to SafeHaven that day! We feel like they rescued us too. Our home needed some happy faces and unrelenting tail wags! Buddy is the first senior dog we have adopted, and having done so, we think the biggest benefit of adopting senior pets is a special kind of love between pet and family. It is as indescribable as it is rewarding. We highly encourage anyone who has the time and resources to please invest in a senior dog. Your life will be imprinted with some beautiful unforgettable memories full of the truest love and trust."

Development IN MEMORIAM A few short years ago, the SafeHaven staff became acquainted with Sallie Albright, a retired teacher in our community with a deep love for animals. She loved them all, but cats had always held a special place in her heart. Her first pet and the pet that started it all was her white and orange cream kitty Felix. “I’ve always been friends with my cats," Sallie told us. When a friend of Sallie’s passed away, in lieu of flowers being sent to the family, her friend had asked that donations be made to SafeHaven Humane Society. Sallie told us, “I was not familiar with SafeHaven and wanted to know more about this place that my friend cared so much for.” After a visit and tour, she told us, “I was so impressed with how warm and caring the shelter was! It was so clean, the pets there were allowed to be animals and given the privacy they deserve. Each kitty had their own comfortable area.” Since that first visit to SafeHaven, Ms. Sallie stayed in touch with several staff members and joined our Planned Giving Program. We asked Sallie why she would choose to leave her entire estate to SafeHaven, a place that she didn’t know very well at first. Her reply was that she could see that every animal that came through the doors had worth and that SafeHaven gives each animal the respect for the creation that they are. “I’m not very wealthy, but I wanted to give all that I could to the animals, especially the cats, they deserve it. I wish I could give more.” Never having to seek out a pet in her life, all her cat companions throughout her life have found her. Walter (pictured here), Sallie’s late cat who lived to be 25, was a true joy in her life.
Ms. Sallie passed away on May 20, 2021 peacefully in a local hospice home. Her kindness had impacted us in so many ways from the moment we met her until the moment we said goodbye.
Sallie’s cat, Walter
Following Ms. Sallie's passing, our staff quickly began to check off her list of final wishes. In order to bring funds to the animals that Ms. Sallie cared so deeply about, we hosted an estate sale in her home and were able to sell many items to raise money. Immediately following, the sale of her modest home was an incredible source of funding for the animals in our care and the animals who have yet to pass through the doors of SafeHaven. All of the staff who met Ms. Sallie are so deeply moved by her kindness and she will surely not be forgotten. Planned Giving can be a truly rewarding way to plan for the future and to leave a mark on the world. We hope you’ll consider learning more and becoming a member of our Legacy Leaders program. In doing so, you become eligible to participate in our Friends for Life program, which provides lifetime care for your pets if you predecease them. Additionally, we would be honored to list your name on our Legacy Leaders donor wall at the shelter. For more information on including us in your estate, contact your estate planner or attorney. We would also be glad to discuss a planned gift with you without obligation by contacting Chris Storm at chris@safehavenhumane.com.

GIVING TUESDAY GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. Giving Tuesday this year is on November 30th, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Each year for the past four years, SafeHaven has celebrated Giving Tueday by reaching supporters with special stories and heartwarming moments in order to encourage the kick off of the Giving Season. This year, we have an exciting match to announce, so your donation will be doubled! Stay tuned for more information leading up to November 30th.
Pet Therapy It is proven that pet companions can help expand the human life expectancy and improve the mood of individuals. Many seniors living in nursing homes or retirement communities are unable to have a pet companion so, to ensure seniors get regular interactions with pets, SafeHaven Humane Society visits senior communities each month with some of our adoptable animals and/or our alums. We are THRILLED to be getting back out into the community and bringing smiles to more faces. In July, we restarted our Pet Therapy program and took three pups, Sally, Molly, and Tippy, to Brookdale Senior Living and The Oaks at Lebanon Retirement and Assisted Living. They were a hit! For more information on these programs, please email communityoutreach@safehavenhumane.com.
Thank you Pedigree US for helping shelter animals find new homes! From now until October 31st, adopt a dog, buy PEDIGREE dog food, get up to $200 back on your dog’s adoption fees. www.pedigree.com/helping-dogs/one-true-loyalty 9
Humane Education HAPPY TALES: THE SEQUEL Happy Tails is BACK! This program helps children increase their reading skills and self confidence by reading aloud to our adoptable dogs, cats, and small animals. And it benefits our adoptable animals by allowing them valuable time socializing with people. Check out these heartwarming photos from our Happy Tales Reading Program once it returned to SafeHaven this summer! John and Sawyer cozied up with recent resident Jinx for some quality reading time and, as you can see, Jinx was quite happy to join in. Since then, Jinx has found a forever home!
SUMMER CAMPS RETURN What a joy it has been to bring back some of our favorite Humane Education programs this summer! One of those is summer camps. In 2020, all of these programs, sadly, came to a halt amid the spread of COVID-19. This year, we were able to host FOUR seperate summer camp days and keep our staff and kiddos safe. We do not know what the future holds for programs like this, but were happy to offer this fun, educational opportunity in 2021!

Fetch Fido A Flight On Saturday, August 7th, after 14 long months, we welcomed 21 Oklahoma faces to SafeHaven! These new friends came to SafeHaven via one of our favorite transport partners. Fetch Fido A Flight is a 501(c)3 donor supported charity working with shelters and rescue groups to reduce, and hopefully one day eliminate, euthanasia practices being performed in Oklahoma's shelters and to altogether eliminate the need for euthanasia due to shelter overcrowding.
HAVE LOVE, WILL TRAVEL This summer, from June 1st to the end of August, 231 lives were saved via our Transport program and having the space and resources available to be able to say "YES" to our Rescue Partners. Now more than ever, this program has felt so important to keep. In many states in the U.S. right now, shelters are overflowing and healthy, adoptable pets are being euthanized every day due to space. That's where we come in! SafeHaven is known as a destination shelter, where various rescue groups can bring these healthy pets to Oregon for a second chance at a happily ever after. Oregon is one of the most dog-friendly states in the nation and these animals tend to get adopted very quickly! The staff at SafeHaven work hard to care for new arivals and ease their stress after such a tumultuous time and this program is near to our hearts. All while helping the animals in our own community. The extra space and resources we have never go unused. To support this program or to learn more, please email our Rescue Coordinator, Katie at katies@safehavenhumane.com. 11

SAVING TEXAS PETS, Y'ALL! We also want to send a HUGE Shout Out to Pono Bowl Co. for hosting a fundraiser on Sunday, July 11.
