Executive Director Focus Hello friends, I love musicals! Some of my all-time favorites are The Sound of Music, Grease, Mama Mia, Mary Poppins, and now, The Greatest Showman. If you have not seen The Greatest Showman, it is a musical inspired by the ambition, imagination, and life of P.T. Barnum. Barnum was a visionary who rose from nothing to create a worldwide sensation. In the movie, one of my favorite songs is A Million Dreams. In many ways, this movie reminds me of SafeHaven’s journey. SafeHaven started as a small group of individuals who wanted to do more for animals. Sometimes laughed at and criticized for their passion, these individuals continued to persevere and see the vision of “what could be”.
“They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy.” “They can say, they can say we’ve lost our minds.” “I don’t care, I don’t care if they call us crazy.” “Runaway to a world that we design.”
So as summer begins, so does the construction of our very own on-site Spay & Neuter Surgery Suite. One of our Million Dreams we’re going to create for the animals and the community. Before Fall arrives, SafeHaven will be able to perform spay and neuter surgeries right here on-site! This has been a need since we moved into our new facility almost 5 years ago---and because of donors like you---it will soon become a reality. Because each of you - our donors, friends, volunteers, and business sponsors - we continue to make dreams become reality. There are no words to describe my gratitude to each of you for sharing in these dreams with SafeHaven. Together, we continue to change lives for the better!
Chris Storm Executive Director
PET BOARDING, DAY CARE & GROOMING! All Under One Roof!
Then the “little shelter that could” became a reality, and more lives were saved and more people began to volunteer and empathize with the mission of helping homeless and abused animals.
“Every night I lie in bed, the brightest colors fill my head, A million dreams are keeping me awake. I think of what the world could be, a vision of the one I see.” Fast forward to today where SafeHaven, with the help of all of you, has built an Education and Adoption Center that the community can be proud of with over 2,000 visitors each month and over 2,500 adoptions (lives saved) each year. But we are not done! As the song in the movie goes:
“A million dreams is all it’s going to take, a million dreams for the world we’re gonna make.”

Speeding To A Forever Home Jenn Amador and Max Sievers adopted a new addition to their family about a year ago. They took home Speedy, named for the fact that despite having three legs, she still managed to zoom around the shelter. We heard from Jenn recently when Speedy (now named Lily) had her one-year vet visit and rabies booster and she wanted to take the time to say, “Thank You”. Lily came to SafeHaven as a stray in April 2018. The staff immediately noticed that she was missing part of her right hind leg and there was a large, fresh wound in the remaining portion of it. We’ll never know how this happened to Lily, but we knew one thing for sure: SafeHaven had to help this sweet girl! She was seen by a local veterinarian and they chose to fully amputate her leg so she could live a full and happy, healthy life, just with one less leg.
Lily and their big male cat Ted (also adopted from SafeHaven) are best friends and spend hours watching birds out the window and playing together with their shared toys. In light of what the last year has looked like, and the great strides forward that Lily has made, Jenn wrote to thank SafeHaven for the work that we do. She said, “I know that if Lily had gone to another shelter, she likely would have been euthanized. Thank you for rescuing her, for making the decision to give her the care she needed, and for refusing to give up on her. She’s the perfect cat for us and we (and our big boy, Ted) love her just as she is.
When they adopted Lily, Jenn recalled that she was “pretty sad-looking -- she still had stitches and the fur on a quarter of her body had been shaved.” She added, “We took her to our vet within the first three days of having her, and got her checked out. At that point, she weighed six pounds, and everyone commented on the fact that, despite looking quite pathetic, she was still a sweet kitty.” At their one year visit to the vet, Jenn and Max got the report that Lily has grown quite a lot over the last year. She has gone from a tiny, underweight cat to being much longer and taller. She weighs 11 pounds now! The fur over her amputation site has grown back, and Jenn recalled, “When she sprawls out on our couch, you can hardly tell that she’s missing a leg.” 3
Thank you, truly, for all the work you do. Your volunteers are excellent and Max and I are so grateful for everything you do to help animals in Linn County and beyond.”
Happy Tails Duff was rescued by SafeHaven in January from the Friends of Madera Animal Shelter. While the staff and volunteers fell in love with him, it might surprise you to learn that he was returned three different times due to various reasons, including his size and training needs, before finding his forever home. We were thrilled to hear from his new family recently: “Hello! I just wanted to give an update on Rogue (AKA Duff). He is an AMAZING boy! Our family adores him. I can’t believe anyone would have given up on him so much. It’s been almost three weeks now, and yes, although there is some training to do, his heart is in the right place and he has so much love to give. His best friend is our other boy, Andy. We were told he’s not a fan of body wrestling, but that’s all he does. He loves to lead Andy around by his collar and grabs onto his tail like they are playing follow the leader. He’s gained a couple of pounds, so slowly but surely we are working on getting his weight up. He is so smart, so energetic, and loves his stuffed animals. We are so thankful he has joined our family, and is absolutely thriving! Thank you for rescuing him, and thank you for all that you do!” -Meg Healey
LUNA
ROGUE Luna’s mom, Amy Rhodaback, is arguably one of our most frequent updaters on our SafeHaven Proud Parents and Alumni Facebook page, and who could blame her? She posts some of the funniest photos our team has ever seen of her sweet photogenic rescue, Luna. Since Luna was adopted almost a year ago, we’ve enjoyed her updates and photos and love hearing what a perfect match she found with her mom. Amy had the following to say about her girl: “Luna is seriously the sweetest thing ever! I adopted her right before Labor Day weekend in 2018. I had seen her online, but originally went to the shelter to see another dog. I didn’t even make it around the kennels to the other dog because she instantly stole my heart. It was rough at first. She ended up really sick a few days after she came home, but got better and is the goofiest dog ever. She loves to smile and has so many facial expressions. Snuggling up on the couch with me is her favorite. We are constantly fighting over the same three cushions! I am so glad I rescued her.” 4

Have Love, Will Travel If you live in or have visited the Mid-Willamette Valley, you know all about the wonders of our little corner of the world. Some people would say it’s so wonderful because of the people you meet, or the fact that the beach is just over an hour away. For the animals that come to SafeHaven on a life-saving transport, they would call it their “second chance.”
The reality of why SafeHaven accepts so many transports is that, if we didn’t answer the call, thousands of healthy, lovable animals would be euthanized due to lack of space in other shelters in states across the nation. SafeHaven’s Director of Operations, Jim Storm, set a goal to keep our shelter as full as possible in 2019, meaning that if we have the space to accept an animal from another shelter and find them a home in our community, then we will do just that. By design, 2019 started off busy and we haven’t slowed down yet. In January, alone, SafeHaven accepted 146 animals from transports. All of these animals got their second chance and got to start 2019 off right. In the first five months of 2019, SafeHaven has accepted 634 animals from other shelters around the country! When we receive many of our transports, they often include multiple litters of puppies and kittens with their moms. Because of this, we need your help! Our foster care system is the last piece of the puzzle in saving these sweet, innocent lives. Giving these babies a foster home gives them the best chance at growing up healthy and strong before becoming available for adoption. Would you like to learn more about fostering? Please contact us at fostercare@safehavenhumane.com.

Community SAFEHAVEN PUPPY PLAYDATE At SafeHaven, we see hundreds of litters of puppies and kittens come through our doors and eventually find their forever families. We often get asked by these adopters if there is any way to get in touch with their new pet’s siblings. We love this idea and that’s one of the many reasons we created the SafeHaven Humane Society Proud Alumni Facebook group! Recently, we saw several of these puppies get together for a puppy playdate at the Lebanon dog park. It’s tough to say whether they remember each other, but Milo, Paisley, and Quinn sure had fun playing in the sunshine! We encourage all of our adopters to get connected through this group and look forward to seeing all the familiar faces in their new lives.
PARROT POP-UP On Saturday, March 30th, SafeHaven hosted a Parrot Pop-Up event by Exotic Bird Rescue of Oregon. While we don’t currently house any birds at our shelter, we were so excited at the opportunity to offer this free event to our supporters to come meet adoptable birds and learn more about exotic bird rescue here in our state. The day included making toys for foster birds, a Bird Care Class, and much more. Many visitors from that day stopped in to see the beautiful creatures and it was a unique experience for the staff and volunteers, as well. The Exotic Bird Rescue of Oregon is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of all parrots. They do amazing work for these birds and we encourage you to contact them if you are interested in working with an exotic bird rescue or adopting. We look forward to working with them again in the future!
MAKING CONNECTIONS We were so excited to be a part of the 2019 Lebanon Biz Expo with many wonderful businesses on Tuesday, April 9th. Meeting with members of our community and hearing stories of adoptions always bring joy to our hearts and reminds us of the importance of our mission. This year, the event saw 1650 visitors come through the doors. We’re pretty sure we saw almost every one! On this day, we took the time to speak about how people in our community can get involved with SafeHaven, the events locally specific to Lebanon, such as Bow Wow Bingo, and got the chance to sing the praises of our Lebanon Gift & Thrift which is coming up on its one year anniversary of being open! We look forward to continuing being a friendly face in the Lebanon community and had so much fun on this day.
Business Spotlight
As you may have heard, we lost our old van in early February due to a spill on the ice heading to a veterinary clinic in Salem. While none of the animals or the driver were injured, this put a strain on an already tight budget. For now, while we still rely on local veterinarians to complete spay and neuter surgeries, SafeHaven needs our van in order to transport the animals. Luckily, several generous donors stepped up immediately and raised the funds to purchase a new van for SafeHaven! The staff were all excited about this new van and it was certainly an upgrade, but it was missing something. We reached out to Xtreme Grafx and they instantly agreed to wrap the new van for free! They worked with SafeHaven on a new, updated design and the van was wrapped and looking spiffy by early May. This gift was in addition to the donated wrap on our old van and countless other in-kind donations that Xtreme has graciously contributed in the past. This family-owned, small business is an amazing community partner and the Willamette Valley is lucky to have them.
Having this van is all thanks to Chris Scariano of Edward Jones and other friends of SafeHaven who stepped up to raise the funds to purchase a new van for the animals!
Arthur Meeker and his team were a dream to work with to design a wrap we love! Our staff has already felt so much pride driving around our community.

Development SHELLY GARRETT In April of this year, we received the sad news that long-time SafeHaven supporter and Lebanon Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Shelly Garrett, passed away. The outpouring of love and compassion the community expressed was a reminder to us of how much of an impact Shelly had and continues to have in our community. Garrett was a driving force behind the recent expansion of Lebanon, including the Edward C. Allworth Veterans Home, COMP-Northwest medical school and Samaritan Health Sciences Campus, expansion of Linn-Benton Community College and its Lebanon-based technology center, and many other community improvement projects. As the Executive Director of the Chamber, Shelly had her hands in so many causes and was a supporter of various non-profits in the area. We are grateful that for so many years, we had Shelly Garrett on our side of saving thousands of animals. Shelly attended almost all of our events and consistently spread the word about the work SafeHaven is doing for Linn County. She became involved with SafeHaven over 10 years ago and recently became a Kennel Sponsor for one of our dog kennels. Our kennel sponsorships are an annual, or monthly, giving program that provide much-needed financial support for the animals staying in your sponsored kennel; give animals a second chance to be adopted into a permanent home; and provide essential veterinary and medical care. When Shelly received the photo from us of her plaque on one of the dog kennels, she replied with “You made my day!” Shelly believed in SafeHaven so much that after her passing, in lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to be made in her name to the animals at SafeHaven. Thank you, Shelly!
For less than $1/day ($360/year), you can take part in our Adopt a Kennel program. When you Adopt a Kennel, a personalized plaque will be placed on your choice of either a dog or cat kennel for one year. Plaques can be personalized with your name, your company’s name, or in memory of a beloved family member, special friend or cherished pet. Your plaque will be seen by over 30,000 people who visit our shelter annually. In addition, you’ll have the pride of knowing that you are supporting an effective organization that protects and cares for more than 2,500 homeless animals annually. Payments can be made monthly or on an annual basis. Sponsorships are tax-deductible. Questions? Call us at 541.926.2924 or email Carly Storm at carly@safehavenhumane.com. 9
Birthday Party ‘HEART’y Susan Basey has always had a heart for homeless animals. As a faithful supporter of SafeHaven for over 20 years, she wanted to celebrate her 75th birthday at SafeHaven Humane Society with her family and friends. Susan, and her daughter, Kimberly Phillips, met with Katie Bateman, SafeHaven’s Volunteer Coordinator, Humane Education and Community Outreach Coordinator, to make plans for the birthday party to take place in the Training Center. Susan wanted an opportunity for her many friends to visit and tour the shelter, in addition to celebrating her birthday. She requested that any gifts be either donations to SafeHaven or items from SafeHaven’s wish list. Saturday afternoon, April 6th, it was Party Central in the Training Center, decorated with balloons, banners and centerpieces. Several dozen people came to visit and wish Susan well, while enjoying a variety of food and birthday treats. Everyone took advantage of guided tours of the shelter, visiting with the dogs and cats available for adoption. Susan’s generous friends demonstrated their love and support with over $800 in cash donations and much needed Wish List items. Best of all, one of her guests adopted and took home little Ariel, a four-month-old Terrier mix puppy who stole her heart at first sight. (Pictured right) Can you think of a better way for people who love animals to celebrate a special occasion? We can’t! Which is why we have now created a special program for adults who want to host their birthdays at SafeHaven! Our Young at Heart birthday parties are the perfect way to celebrate your big day with your closest friends! Email Katie at volunteer@safehavenhumane.com to learn more.
COVER PHOTO Meet Sweet Pea and Lady, two very lovely 9 year-old beauties. Sweet Pea and Lady belong to Mary Rose and her sister, Joan Jordan, both long-time generous supporters of SafeHaven, who won the summer issue cover at the 2018 Rescue Roundup. Mary and Joan took Sweet Pea and Lady into their home as kittens after seeing two momma cats caring for four kittens (between the two of them) on one of their walks around the neighborhood. The group was unsocialized and seemed very hungry. Mary and Joan knew they had to help, so they set a live trap and were able to rescue the momma cats and kittens and get them to safety. From there, they began the process of socializing them, getting them spayed and vaccinated. They also lovingly found homes for Sweet Pea and Lady’s litter mates and their mothers. Mary Rose added “We have five cats total and every night they all sleep on a table by the window in a big pile and snuggle together.” Two of our most loyal supporters, Mary and Joan have both been involved with SafeHaven for many years and have attended countless events and fundraisers. Mary shared, “We continue to support SafeHaven because we love animals and you all do fantastic work!”

Humane Education When Liana Lahann and her mother, Laynee, moved to Albany from San Jose, California 4 years ago, they searched for ways to be involved in their community. They both signed up to become volunteers at SafeHaven. That’s when Liana first began coming to SafeHaven camps and immediately fell in love with the animals and the programs SafeHaven has to offer. Her first Humane Education program was a Teen Camp held during the summer she arrived in Oregon. Fast forward to today, Liana, now 17, volunteers with our Humane Education programs, including camps and Pets and Pajamas Movie Nights. Katie Bateman, SafeHaven’s Humane Education Coordinator, said, “Liana is amazing with the kids and needs little to no supervision when it comes to working with them. She is very kind and they all love having her!” Liana and her mom have since adopted a bunny and a kitten from SafeHaven, adding to their crew of a 14 year old Pomeranian and two other cats at home. She told us she loves animals and loves having a lot in their home. Liana also still volunteers with SafeHaven when she has the time. She said her favorite area to volunteer in is with the small animals. “The bunnies are my favorite” she added. Liana also told us she enjoys drawing and listening to music. When she graduates next year, she wants to study Forensic Psychology. Liana’s story is just one of the ways our Humane Education program has an impact on its participants. We’re so lucky to have met her family and feel grateful that she wants to stay involved in camps and other programs as she has aged out of them. If your teen is interested in volunteering with our Humane Education program, please email Katie at humaneed@safehavenhumane.com.

You won’t regret signing your children up for these exciting opportunities to learn more about animal welfare and spend time with our adoptable animals!
In Memoriam Doris Marie Scharpf On April 24, 2019, SafeHaven lost a friend and supporter: Doris Scharpf. Doris was very involved with many of the non-profits in the area, often times referred to as the “anonymous” donor. Because of her kindness, Doris helped SafeHaven open the doors to our new facility almost five years ago. It was her donation that was a turning point in getting our new facility built and I will never forget all that she did to help SafeHaven and the animals that pass through our doors. If asked, Doris would tell you she was not a profound animal lover; but what she loved about SafeHaven was the lessons we teach: responsibility, kindness, compassion, and hard work. She believed in what SafeHaven stands for in our community and Doris continued to donate each year (always anonymously) and never wanted anything more than a simple “Thank You” for all that she did. I, for one, feel so blessed to have known Doris and have been blessed by her generous heart. She will be missed dearly. Chris Storm, Executive Director
FAMILY DAY OF SERVICE We want to send a huge shout out of appreciation to all the families that attended our annual Family Day of Service on Sunday, May 5, 2019. We had 27 people join us and helped wash the SafeHaven vehicles, contribute much needed time in our dog yards, and spent time socializing with some of the shelter pets. It was so much fun and we hope you all join us again next year!

Gift & Thrift OUR FIRST YEAR IN LEBANON Can you believe it has almost been a year since we opened our doors to the SafeHaven Gift & Thrift in Lebanon? Our first day open to the public was June 18, 2018 and it was an exciting day! The Lebanon location instantly grew in donations and shoppers and the community welcomed SafeHaven with open arms. Kimberly Gray, the Lebanon store manager said, “We nearly outgrew the space within six weeks because of all the generous donations from the community.” She also added that the store has many regular customers that they love seeing often and, on flip side of that, new customers are still learning that we are there and finding us. The Lebanon store is bringing in customers from far and wide and seeing shoppers from Portland and further is not uncommon. Kimberly also added, “While we are always searching for more volunteers, we couldn’t do what we do without the help of Don and Connie Groves, longtime SafeHaven volunteers and supporters, who visit the store 3-4 times each week!” In the photo to the left, you can see the main area of the store coming together last year in June. As the months have passed, the number of items in the space has quickly grown! Many people are surprised to learn how many different shopping areas there are in the Lebanon location! Be sure to stop by our newest Gift & Thrift location to see what is in store. You’re guaranteed to never find the same thing twice!

Gift & Thrift 5 YEARS OF SHOPPING TO SAVE ANIMALS May 9, 2019 marked five years since the SafeHaven Gift & Thrift in Tangent opened its doors in 2014. This store has celebrated some huge accomplishments in the mission of saving animals and has also given the community a place to find some incredible treasures along the way! In just five short years, this store has grossed $615,439.39! The Gift & Thrift has been instrumental in the growth of SafeHaven and has contributed funds towards saving thousands of animals. Not only do both Gift & Thrift stores contribute funding to the shelter, but also support with in-kind items such as office and cleaning supplies and other items that the shelter would otherwise need to purchase. It is a win-win for the community and the animals at SafeHaven! Jodi Javage, the Gift & Thrift Manager stated, “It has been such a fun experience watching the Gift & Thrift grow over the past five years. Each year, we’ve added more displays, gotten more organized, and acquired more customers, donors, and volunteers. I feel blessed to be a part of this great organization, knowing that the work we do at the stores benefits the animals and the environment.” We also want to thank YOU for your support. To all of our shoppers and donors, specifically to the Gift & Thrift stores, Thank You. We are thrilled to have your support and to continue providing a space where you can find great deals, save animals, and donate your new and gently used items.
