Executive Director Focus Dear Friends,

One of my favorite quotes is this:

“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”

As we approach our 4 year anniversary in July of opening our new facility, I am still filled with gratitude and thanks each day for each of you that helped make this dream a reality for our community and for the animals who so desperately need us.

SafeHaven began because a small group of dedicated individuals came together and decided we as a community could do more to help animals - they “planted the first tree” - and it continues to grow day after day, year after year, saving lives today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.

From the “little shelter that could” to the amazing facility we are today, we hold strong to the values that created SafeHaven over 44 years ago: We are guided by the belief that no adoptable or treatable companion animal should be unnecessarily euthanized due to space, time, appearance, or treatable conditions. We are committed to:

On behalf of the animals,

Chris Storm, Executive Director

◆ Giving a new chance to companion animals who would otherwise be discarded ◆ Strengthening the human animal bond through education

◆ Helping people and their companion animals stay together through the support of programs and services ◆ Leading responsibly with compassion As you read through this issue of the Pet Press, my hope is that you will see what a true and measurable impact each of you have made as the community comes together to support SafeHaven. You don’t have to be privileged, have special advantages, or have a lot of money to make an impact. It is really a mindset. You can adopt a pet in need like Kit Kat, Angel, or Grace, attend an event that benefits SafeHaven such as the Stars “N” Stripes Golf Tournament or Rescue Roundup, volunteer at the shelter like London does, have your business support our mission like Schmizza Public House, Spirit Espresso, J & J Electric, and CoEnergy Propane do, or give your birthday to the animals like Will did. Everyone can do something! Choose to be a role model! 1

Featured Adoption

Kit Kat

from her purple mug up high on a table. She really enjoys being able to be outside so the family built her a special cat

SafeHaven’s featured adoption is a very special kitty named Kit Kat! She came to SafeHaven in May 2017 from an ASPCA Rescue Transport and was adopted just days after Christmas in 2017. While Kit Kat was at the shelter, she was diagnosed with a condition known as Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1). This means that when she has a flare-up, it can look a lot like a common cold, but may be accompanied by a fever or loss of appetite. A flare-up of FHV-1 usually lasts about 4-7 days. Kit Kat had to go to a home where she was the only cat. Luckily, dogs and people are completely safe - they can’t catch Feline herpesvirus.

run so she can enjoy the outdoors safely. Kit Kat also likes to flop on the floor and let her family rub her belly but, they told us, “Beware of how much ‘cause she will grab your hands!” She absolutely loves string toys and plastic bags, so much so that they had to hide the bags where she couldn’t get them. Kit Kat has so much energy, she literally jumps and runs on the walls! Her family is very much in love with her. Her new mom added, “I’m quite glad Kit Kat is our cat!” Kit Kat’s mom shared that she loves playing with and stealing skeins of yarn. When she went home, she was very fun and playful, but not super cuddly. However, now she is very affectionate. She often crawls into laps for pets and naps and recently started curling up in bed right in the crook of her mom’s arm. She loves giving nose boops, too. She and Tippy (their female malamute) enjoy chilling together, staring out the same window and splashing Tippy’s water bowl everywhere. Kit Kat, herself, won’t drink from a dish on the floor (she will dump it though) and prefers to drink

LOOKING FOR A NEW BEST FRIEND? We urge you to consider adoption and to tell your friends and family about adopting. There are many great reasons to adopt from your local shelter. The biggest and best reason is that you are saving a life! At SafeHaven Humane Society, our goal is to find permanent, loving homes for all animals entrusted to our care. Let our staff work with you to help you find the ideal dog or cat to fit your life. Come visit us today! We’re always happy to show you around and answer any questions you may have about adopting a shelter animal. 3

Kit Kat’s special needs have not prevented her from being a happy, loving, and well-loved family member!

Happy Tails In the first five months of 2018, SafeHaven has found homes for more than 737 pets thanks to supporters like you! Please join our SafeHaven Alumni Facebook group. We love to hear Happy Tails and interact with you.

ANGEL “Angel, the four year old English Pointer mix, has been a blessing to our family. We were told she might have a hard time settling in but when she got home, she ate, played, and napped without a problem! Because she has been in kennels most of her life. We are still potty training and it is going very well! She loves to cuddle up with Momma and get rubs every night on the couch. Her best friends are Frankie the miniature pincer and Dexter the cat. When Dad gets home from work is when her tail goes crazy! Autumn (4) and Jaxon (1) are the children of our household and they always love on Angel while she lies there and let’s them. Angel is sweet, honest, playful, and loving. We couldn’t ask for more.” -Angel’s Mom, Ashley

GRACE Grace was adopted in February 2018. She was one of our rescued Malamute momma dogs from a puppy mill in California. When she was adopted, she had appeared malnourished and her coat had been neglected. Since adoption, she has gained a soft, very thick coat and a few pounds. Her owner, Erin, added, “She is the perfect dog for our family. My daughter has taught her multiple tricks and she is incredibly smart. Thank you for helping us find our best friend!”

ANGEL Angel was adopted on June 18th, 2015 and has become a true angel to her parents, Ann & Evan. She was described as shy at first, but quickly opened up at home and became a big cuddler! She spends her days following her people around the house and sitting on their laps whenever possible. Six months after Angel was adopted, she unfortunately suffered a stroke and lost some mobility and interest in her normal activities. Luckily, she had two parents who loved her very much and nursed her back to health. They even moved their bed onto the floor so she could still climb up without falling. She is doing so much better these days! Her mom added, “Angel came to us with her name, but really has turned out to be an angel. We couldn’t have asked for a better companion.”

Events

September 29th at The Boys & Girls Club of Albany TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE OR AT OUR SHELTER!

A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN Dust those boots off to prepare for a boot stompin’ good time on Saturday, September 29th for our Rescue Roundup event, a western themed dinner with live and silent auctions taking place throughout the evening at The Boys & Girls Club of Albany. This annual event helps fund our shelter operations, much needed programs and services, and ensures that every animal that comes through our doors has a warm and loving place to stay on the way to their forever home...no matter how long that takes! If you are interested in more information or would like details on sponsoring one of our events, please contact Ashley at ashley@safehavenhumane.com.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Donating an auction item is one of the many ways you can support our animals! SafeHaven collects auction items throughout the year for this event, for both a live and silent auction. We collect a wide variety of items, including gift baskets, pet supplies, sporting events and merchandise, items to keep your car in tip-top shape, art, gift certificates and much more! Please help us in hosting another record breaking year for the animals. If you are interested in donating an auction item, please contact Ashley at 541-926-2924 or ashley@safehavenhumane.com.

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN SAVE ANIMALS BY RECYCLING? Bottle Drop helps nonprofit organizations fundraise and it’s as easy as dropping your recycled cans into Bottle Drop bags! Step 1: Come in to SafeHaven and ask for a blue Bottle Drop bag. Step 2: Fill the blue bag with recyclable cans. Step 3: Bring the filled bag back to the shelter or drop the bag off at the Bottle Drop location in Albany. For more details, contact Katie Bateman at volunteer@safehavenhumane.com or call the shelter and ask for Katie at 541-926-2924. 6

Humane Education MEET LONDON! London is a 7 year old Albany girl who loves animals and is a participant in many of our Humane Education programs. We asked London a few questions about being involved with SafeHaven. Here is what she had to say:

Q: What is your favorite thing about coming to SafeHaven? London: Seeing the animals and seeing the special care and love they get. Q: Do you have any favorite animals that you’ve met at SafeHaven? London: Momma. She was a kitty. Every time I put my hand on her cage she’d put her paw up. And of course, the three pets we’ve adopted from SafeHaven. London’s mom added, “We said we’d never have a cat because of my husband’s allergies. But London always fell in love with a cat at SafeHaven that she’d beg us to see. So now we have two cats.” Q: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from coming to SafeHaven? London: Animal language, like how to read the animals moods by their tails. Q: What would you like others to know about SafeHaven? London: The animals get special care and special love every day. Q: What is your favorite animal? London: Cats! Q: What do you want to be when you grow up? London: I want to work at SafeHaven! London also wanted to add she LOVES SafeHaven’s Pets and Pajamas nights! She’s even held her birthday party at SafeHaven!

A WORD FROM LONDON’S MOM “I first found SafeHaven’s programs about two years ago. I was trying to find activities for London to keep her busy and social. London is not into sports, but loves animals. I found SafeHaven’s programs by a simple Google search. We started by trying out the Pets and Pajamas nights. She loved those, so we kept enrolling her in other activities through SafeHaven. She’s done Pets and Pals Clubs, participated in Day Camps, and has been to almost every Pets and Pajamas night. Pets and Pajamas and the camps are her favorites. London can’t wait until she’s old enough to ‘work’ at SafeHaven!”

SIGN YOUR CHILD UP FOR SUMMER CAMP!

We are currently taking registrations for our summer camps! Themes this year include Art With Animals, Teen Career Camp, Fun & Fur Camp and also Day Camps. Registration is available online or at our shelter. Check out www.safehavenhumane.org/summercamps to check dates and more details! 7

THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA There are so many ways to support SafeHaven and the animals who come to the shelter looking for a second chance at a forever family. We recently got connected with Will Hollings, who not only has adopted animals from SafeHaven, but has supported us in other generous ways, as well. Will first became involved with SafeHaven a few years ago when he was looking for a new dog. He thought he wanted a black Newfoundland, had saved the money and was searching for a puppy. His girlfriend was helping him look, but was less excited about him spending thousands of dollars on a puppy. She showed him a picture of some puppies at SafeHaven Humane Society. After seeing the mixed breed puppies available, Will said, “Of course, they were the cutest things I had ever seen and had to have them in my life!” That same day, they adopted terrier mix puppies, Bella and Aurora. They went to work with Will every day. Unfortunately, when the two dogs were about 2 years old, Aurora passed away in an accident. Will was devastated and so was Bella. He thought the only good that could come from a tragedy like this, was to save another life. After time for the family to heal, they adopted Bambi. She warmed Will’s home and life for almost two years before she, too, was the victim of an unfortunate accident. Will told us, “I really started to wonder if I was the best option for a dog to have as a human. I love all of my pets and make sure they are well taken care of. At the same time, I couldn’t help but think a different life would be better. After talking with a few close friends, I

Development decided that the love they receive from me was worth the risk. I again had room to save another pup and get Bella a playmate. So I adopted Jasmine.” Jasmine fits right in with Bella and the family and Will feels very fortunate to have found her. Will also added, “All of my experiences with SafeHaven have been wonderful. The staff is always very polite and knowledgeable. The facility is always immaculate and inviting. I really want to see SafeHaven get to the point of having a veterinarian on staff to spay and neuter, as well as address medical issues and administer shots the animals need. I really want to be a part of the growth, so I decided to do the fundraiser on Facebook to get SafeHaven $5,000 closer to their goals.” On top of a hugely successful Facebook fundraiser hosted by Will, he also now sponsors two kennels in memory of Aurora and Bambi in hopes that they will live on in spirit, helping others to find a good home. SafeHaven could not operate on the scale that we do if not for supporters like Will. He and so many others have proven to us that one person can make a huge impact on the lives of so many deserving animals. Sponsoring a kennel at SafeHaven is an incredible way to honor a loved one, whether it be a person or an animal who has touched your heart. To learn more on how to start a Facebook Birthday Fundraiser, sponsor a kennel, or hear other ways to get involved, please contact Development Coordinator, Brittany, at events@safehavenhumane.com or call 541-926-2924.

DONATE YOUR BIRTHDAY TO HOMELESS ANIMALS Will and so many others have made their birthday even more special by hosting a fundraiser for SafeHaven through Facebook! In 2018, SafeHaven has earned $8,684 from Facebook fundraising alone. It’s simple and gives your friends and family a way to support a cause that means so much to you. Every little bit helps. Whether someone donates $5 or $100, it certainly adds up and enables SafeHaven to do so much more for animals who need our help. Facebook will ask you if you are interested in hosting a fundraiser for your birthday about two weeks prior. If you need help setting up a birthday fundraiser, please feel free to contact us at events@safehavenhumane.com to get more information! 8

Community SPIRIT ESPRESSO On April 6th, Spirit Espresso in Albany held a third party fundraiser to support the animals at SafeHaven. On that day, 20% of total sales was donated by Spirit Espresso. The total came to $356.55! Thank you to everyone that supported us that day and to everyone who supports Spirit Espresso. The owner, Kelly Robbins, is also currently serving on our committee to plan SafeHaven’s biggest event of the year, Rescue Roundup, and is a big part of SafeHaven’s efforts to find homes for our animals. We love third party fundraisers! If you are interested in hosting one, please contact Brittany at 541-926-2924 or email events@safehavenhumane.com!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Bonaventure of Albany Assisted Living hosted a family friendly event on February 21st, where residents came to support SafeHaven and were happy to see the adoptable dog that we brought to visit. The two-hour event featured a raffle where residents had a chance to win a Visa gift card, as well as multiple giveaway prizes. There were also crafts and games throughout the day. Residents also surprised us with a $200 donation for the animals after the event! We are so grateful for their kindness and compassion and are so very fortunate to be a part of this wonderful community. Bonaventure is one of the many retirement facilities that SafeHaven visits 1-2 times monthly as part of our Pet Therapy program. It is proven that pet companions can help extend human life expectancy and improve the mood of individuals. Many seniors who living in nursing homes or retirement communities are unable to have a pet companion, so to ensure seniors get regular interactions with pets, SafeHaven Humane Society visits senior communities in Linn and Benton counties each month with some of our adoptable animals and/or our SafeHaven alumni. This program not only benefits the residents, but also our animals with the added socialization and time spent away from the shelter where they receive much more one-on-one interaction. To learn more about our Pet Therapy visits, or if you would like to volunteer to assist in one of these visits, please email Katie at volunteer@safehavenhumane.com or visit safehavenhumane.org/volunteering. 9

Community In March of 2018, Diana Sartin and the Waddell Group with Windermere Real Estate, set up Bingo nights at Schmizza Public House in Lebanon to fundraise for SafeHaven. The two dates were more than successful! We had a great turnout and Bingo was such a hit, we are continuing this event twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Monday. Please note that during the summer months of July and August, we will not have Bingo and will return in September.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IF YOU WANT TO ATTEND: · The cost is $1.00 per card or $5.00 for 6 cards. · Please bring cash. Small bills are easiest for us to collect. · Seats are limited! Get there early to reserve your spot. · Unfortunately, children under age 18 cannot participate due to gaming laws in Oregon. · Bingo at Schmizza Public House will be the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month unless otherwise stated. Please check SafeHaven’s website. Diana Sartin has been a huge supporter of SafeHaven in 2018 and we greatly appreciate her kindness. Thank you to Diana, the Waddell Group, Windermere R.E., and Schmizza Public House for graciously hosting our event and accommodating our large crowds. Come join us!

BELLA & SHASTA COVER PHOTO WINNERS

Bella is a 7 year old SafeHaven alumni who was adopted at the old location on Highway 34 by her new mom, Kathleen Ramirez. Her owners came to the shelter to buy a Christmas tree during the holiday season and fell in love with Bella, then named Alice. The family says that she has been the best dog they have ever had. The Ramirezes also have a cat named Shasta (pictured) who came to their family after being nursed back to health after suffering multiple injuries. Kathleen and her husband, Ramiro said, “Shasta has been such a wonderful addition to our family. “ Bella loves to play lacrosse with her human brother, Diego. She is very play driven and loves to be active! Bella’s mom also described her as a ‘homebody’ who isn’t very interested in traveling. She prefers to stay at home and play all day. 10

Business Spotlight

MAKING CONNECTIONS SafeHaven is proud to call CoEnergy Propane a partner in our mission to save homeless animals. They are deeply involved in events, fundraisers and more! Randy Camp, the owner of CoEnergy Propane, is even a member of the SafeHaven Humane Society Board of Directors. During the month of March, CoEnergy Propane ran a special to create even more funds for the animals. For every new customer that signed up for service in March, CoEnergy Propane donated $100 to SafeHaven. They even wrapped the back of one of their trucks to promote this offer! CoEnergy Propane is a locally owned and operated propane gas supplier, helping revitalize Oregon. They have been serving Central Oregon, the Willamette Valley, and the Oregon Coast since 2001. They are here to make sure you can cook, shower, stay warm and relax at home or at work! Check them out for all your agricultural, residential and commercial needs!

J & J ELECTRIC CONTINUING TRADITION

We are very happy to call J & J Electric a supporter of the animals at SafeHaven. Along with a donation jar at their business, J & J Electric hosts an annual third party fundraiser at their store where 20% of that day’s sales is donated to SafeHaven. Every year, we also include an adoptable animal to help promote programs and events happening at the shelter. We are so grateful for J & J’s longtime support and are looking forward to the next fundraiser J & J Electric hosts for our organization. In May of this year, J & J Electric owners Larry and Marge Tomlin adopted Gracie (pictured) to join their family. Marge added, “We love that

SafeHaven is a no-kill shelter. We choose to support SafeHaven because they are a voice for all of the ‘fur people’ they save.”

J&J Electric, a family owned and operated lighting showroom, has been serving customers since 1965. At their store, you’ll find lighting fixtures from the top manufacturers along with experienced staff ready to offer you personalized service that meets your needs. Training & Special Pets PARKOUR PADDY SafeHaven Humane Society is dedicated to helping people build and maintain happy, lifelong relationships with their pets. From obedience classes to private training, our goal is to be a resource for the communities we serve and to help owners experience the many rewards of pet ownership. We recently asked one of our clients about her experience with her Aussie, Patrick, and here is what Dani had to say: “Patrick has been training at SafeHaven for two years. He started as a smart but fearful and reactive adolescent, and has grown into a loving, playful adult through the classes and private training we’ve done during that time. His favorite class has been Parkour, and he’s even earned the nickname ‘Parkour Paddy’ from people who see me practicing his agility on our morning walks. More importantly, working with a trainer has trained me to recognize his needs and be a better dog mom to this amazing Aussie.” We want to be a resource to our community and help families live in harmony with their pets. We offer many classes, as well as multiple seminars and workshops throughout the year, to provide information to the community. As a bonus, the fees charged for these classes and seminars go directly towards the care of the animals at SafeHaven and allow us to save even more animals every year!

SPECIAL PETS DESERVE SPECIAL HOMES Did you know that SafeHaven has a special section on our website where we highlight special needs animals? We believe all animals in need deserve a second chance, no matter their circumstance. Little Bit, Lefty and Sissy, or as we like to call them “The Three Amigos”, are inseparable and have been through a lot together, creating a very unique and strong bond. Who knew that a Pit Bull mix, Chihuahua mix and Jack Russell Terrier mix could become the best of friends? The Three Amigos came to SafeHaven from a START Rescue Me Transport from an overcrowded, high-kill shelter in Southern California. They have adapted well to the changes in their short stay here at SafeHaven. Unfortunately, the medical team at SafeHaven noticed some concerns regarding their health. Little Bit was in serious need of dental care and recently had several teeth removed. When Sissy arrived, she was unable to move her back legs and is now going through laser therapy to help her regain some mobility and is getting a wheelchair so she can move around easier. Sadly, shortly after arrival, Lefty was diagnosed with inoperable terminal cancer. With all of these challenges, we are still hopeful that there is a perfect family for these Three Amigos, where they can finally call home and receive a much deserved second chance. The staff describes Little Bit as the sweet lap dog of the bunch. Sissy loves to play with tennis balls and loves to be snuggled! Lefty is still full of life and is a very sweet and silly boy. To learn more about The Three Amigos, visit our website. They are featured under “Special Needs Animals” as well as “Adoptable Dogs”, or stop by SafeHaven and ask to meet them! 12

Volunteer Spotlight CAROL SMEDBERG SafeHaven is so happy to introduce Carol as our Volunteer Spotlight in this issue of the Pet Press! Carol is deeply invested with SafeHaven and helps the animals in any way she can. Not only does Carol volunteer her time, she also fosters animals, is an Inner Circle member and recently started hosting and teaching a monthly CPR & AED class at SafeHaven, in which all of the proceeds go directly to the animals. Carol has been with SafeHaven since we were at the old location on Highway 34 and, after a break, got involved again one year ago. Missing the cats is what made Carol begin volunteering again. She has mostly fostered mama cats and kittens in the past, but recently began fostering her first puppy and is staying very busy with that. When Carol fosters kittens, she likes to invite the neighborhood kids to her house to socialize with them. When they are ready to come back to SafeHaven for adoption, she throws a celebratory party for all the kids to say goodbye and wish the kittens well. Carol has adopted cats from SafeHaven in the past but only fosters now, due to her busy life and needing to be ready to travel on short notice. Along with SafeHaven, she also volunteers with the American Red Cross and travels to natural disaster areas and helps with blood drives, as well. Thank you, Carol, for all you do to support SafeHaven and the animals!

SUPPORT SAFEHAVEN WHILE LEARNING LIFE-SAVING SKILLS! Check our website for upcoming CPR & AED class dates and times to get registered for this class. All proceeds benefit the animals at SafeHaven and the class is a wonderful resource for anyone in our community!

WAHS COMMUNITY TRANSITION PROGRAM The West Albany High School Community Transition Program has been volunteering with SafeHaven for over 8 years. They visit once a week for 45 minutes and help the shelter with a multitude of tasks and also spend time with the animals each time they visit. The program teaches work skills to 18-21 year olds and has an average of 30 students enrolled per year. The students can come from all over the school district. We are one of a few different places they visit; the Mennonite Village is another. We’re so appreciative of all of our volunteers and couldn’t do what we do without them! 13

New Gift & Thrift Store in Lebanon AMAZING DEALS x2! SafeHaven is happy to announce the opening of a new Gift & Thrift location in Lebanon, Oregon this summer! This has been a project in the making for quite some time and we’re thrilled to be in the Lebanon community with a fun way of earning money for the animals, while bringing you bargains! This location is in addition to the Gift & Thrift store in Tangent, just down the road from the shelter. The Tangent store has been an extremely valuable source of revenue since we opened the doors in May 2014. All of the items we sell at the Gift & Thrift come from donors just like you and we hope to see a great response with our new store in Lebanon.

Kimberly Gray, Lebanon store manager

In 2017, the Gift and Thrift location brought in $121,591.20! That income allows SafeHaven to save so many animals, give them the care they need and eventually find them their ‘happily ever afters’. Our hope is to be in the Lebanon community more in the future and this Gift & Thrift store is the first step in that direction.

GET INVOLVED We’re always looking for more volunteers to help us out in our Gift & Thrift locations. Whether you are interested in volunteering at the new Lebanon location or the store in Tangent, we want to connect with you! Please contact Katie by emailing volunteer@safehavenhumane.com to learn how you can get involved. If you’re moving, downsizing or spring cleaning, please also consider donating to SafeHaven’s Gift & Thrift Store. We respectfully request donated items be in good condition and gently used. Broken or soiled items actually take funds away from caring for the animals, due to costs of disposing of unusable items. VISIT OUR NEW LOCATION COMING THIS SUMMER!

We are located at:
