I would like to introduce you to Mason. Mason arrived at SafeHaven Humane Society in February 2017 looking for his second chance in Oregon. He is currently considered our “longest term resident” and, although it sometimes baffles our staff and me, he is consistently overlooked. Mason is goofy, super smart and full of energy and love. He isn’t perfect; but which of us is? He prefers an adult home with no other dogs (though a smaller dog/puppy may work); however, even with his special requests, we know there is someone out there for whom Mason would complete their family!

Now, more than ever, pets are considered a part of the family. In fact, one of every five Americans currently has a pet in their home and nine out of 10 pet owners say that they consider their pets as part of the family and even buy them gifts, outfits, toys and treats on special occasions. Some pet parents celebrate birthdays, adoption days, and send holiday cards featuring their dog and cat front and center in the family photo. It makes me smile knowing that SafeHaven has helped over 2,400 pets become
members of their very own families this past year alone!
Many of the pets who enter the doors of SafeHaven, like Mason, have been neglected, abandoned, or simply just forgotten and some come with very sad stories that stir our emotions and make our hearts ache. Pets have no safety net, no voice of their own, so SafeHaven must be a voice for them. The fact that we can be that voice makes me so grateful to all of you…volunteers, supporters, and friends who have helped SafeHaven make a positive life-changing difference for thousands of animals. Over the past three months, there have been so many good causes to give to. It seems every week, there is another great need in some part of the world; natural disasters, homelessness, lack of potable water and the list goes on and on. Like most of you, I struggle with where my hard earned money will be put to the best use. But as each day unfolds here at SafeHaven, I am reminded again just how important the work we do is; from watching a cat go from being thrown from a car to purring loudly and snuggled into his new “pet parent’s” coat as she fills out the adoption paperwork, to the dog who was minutes from euthanasia at an overcrowded shelter now jumping into his adopter’s car (taking over the front passenger seat) as if waving goodbye to all of us---and I know, this is why I support SafeHaven. My great hope is that this is always why you support SafeHaven, as well, and that it is a cause that is personal to you, one that makes you feel like you are truly making a difference…. because you are! On behalf of Mason (who has the opportunity, because of you, to continue to wait for his perfect family to come) and all the other animals that have no voice, THANK YOU for supporting our mission and the animals in our care. Lovey OF
December 23, 2016 was a life-changing day for the Garrett family of Dallas, Oregon and a traumatized 3 year old dog named Omni from Korea. Activist, Nami Kim, had rescued Omni from a dog meat factory in Bucheon City a few months prior, along with 299 other dogs, destined for the dinner table. Nami Kim successfully shut that factory down and saved all 300 dogs.

Omni’s journey to SafeHaven began in California, where the rescue group START transported Omni and four other Korean dogs to SafeHaven for adoption. A large white ‘Jindo’ type dog, Omni was the last to be adopted. She cowered in her kennel, terrified of everyone and everything. A large lump on her left front leg had gone untreated because she was too frightened to take to the vet. Alicia Garrett had never heard of SafeHaven until mid-December when a friend showed her a post from the SafeHaven Facebook page, featuring the dogs from Korea. It wasn’t until a few days later
she, “felt this pull that I needed to go get that dog.” The next morning, December 23rd, Alicia, her 13 year old daughter, Lilly, and Sherman, their 4 year old terrier mix rescue, were at SafeHaven when the doors opened. It took some time for staff to coax Omni from her kennel and into a meet and greet room with Alicia and Lilly. Omni ran circles around the room, then stopped to sniff them. It took just one shy lick from Omni to the side of Alicia’s face for her to know they were meant to have her. They introduced her to Sherman. It was all wags between them. “I called my husband at work and told him I wanted to adopt a Korean meat dog with a large unknown lump on her front left leg.” After a moment of shock, he said, “We can help her.” He said to adopt her and take her straight to their vet to be checked.
It wasn’t good news. Cancer was suspected and a biopsy was done after Christmas. But, still, there was joy for Omni. “Our family decided that after everything she had been through, she deserved to know love. Even if we only had her a short time, we wanted her to be loved.” And so, Omni became known as ‘Lovey’.
A week later, Lovey was diagnosed with Histiocytic Sarcoma and referred to Dr. Winters with OSU Oncology. In January, 2017, in order to save her life, Lovey’s front left leg had to be amputated. How much suffering can one dog endure? Lovey’s anxiety was so high that the OSU oncology team could not leave her alone after surgery. They sent her home to the Garrett’s quickly to start healing her body and soul. Thrilled to see her family, Lovey hopped out of the clinic and into the car on her own three legs. Once home, she was all kisses and pure joy. “I think the surgery and amputation were harder on us than on her, “says Alicia. “She adapted more quickly physically to her three legs than we did mentally.” The tumorous leg was gone, but the possibility for cancer
Featured Adoption was still there. The Garretts chose to do chemotherapy for Lovey to increase her chances for full recovery. From February to June, 2017, there were many, many trips to their vet, Dr. Rivers, and OSU Oncology for chemo. But dogs tolerate chemotherapy better than humans and Lovey thrived in her new home. Everything was new to Lovey, not just her name. She had never laid on anything soft, had no idea how to jump up or down on things, was afraid to walk through doorways, had no idea how to navigate stairs, didn’t know what a toy was. She was hypervigilant, her eyes always on them.
Fortunately, there was an established pack of other happy rescue dogs in the house, so she watched and learned from them. Lovey had no idea how to play, but the pack welcomed her. Sherman, the terrier mix, was rescued from an abuse/abandonment situation, German Shepherd, Ella, is a 5 year survivor of a terminal heart condition, and Izzy is their 4 year old Great Dane. “When she first started to play with them, it was so funny to watch. Just last week she figured out how to play with a ball, as the whole family cheered her on.” Lovey also met their Mainecoon cats, Jake and Tinker. Jake is her favorite snuggle buddy.
Now, Lovey sleeps in bed with their 19 year old daughter, Caitlin, at night and on the couch during the day. She loves her basket of toys, giving kisses and snuggling up. There are still some issues that are in progress. Lovey was terrified of men, which Nami Kim says is common, since Korean butchers are mostly men. But, with time
and patience, husband, Pat, is now able to feed her by hand and she can sleep soundly with him in the same room. Lovey is slowly overcoming years of fear.
The Garrett family feels grateful for every day with her. Lovey has had two full body scans since July and is currently cancer free. “Yay, Lovey!” Alicia says, “Our love for her was instantaneous and it has only grown. We adore this sweet girl and from the very beginning we were committed to make every moment of her new life filled with love and happiness. In return, she has filled our lives with love and happiness!” The first three years of her life, Lovey spent enduring cruelty, terror and isolation, hearing and, probably, seeing her offspring and other dogs brutally killed for human consumption. Yet, she still possesses the power to love and to be loved. “The heart of a dog amazes me,” says Alicia. The heart of people like Alicia and Pat Garrett, who welcome special needs animals into their lives, also amaze. And, through an international outpouring of compassion and love by Nami Kim, her supporters, START, SafeHaven staff and supporters, the gift of love will keep giving.

Humane Education SAFEHAVEN’S ANNUAL POSTER CONTEST Every year SafeHaven celebrates our community’s creativity by hosting a children’s poster contest. This contest is held for children in grades K-12 and we’ve seen some great pieces of art over the years. Children draw anything from their own pets to pets currently here at the shelter. Kids are required to create their own submission using any media type they prefer.
Minimum size for the artwork is 8.5” x 11” inches but we will accept anything up to the size of an average poster. SafeHaven began this contest not only to celebrate creativity but also to bring awareness to humane education. We see this as an opportunity to broaden our own perspectives and view the world from the eyes of a child.

K-2ND GRADE: Pets are family too. Our pets have feelings just like we do. They love us and want to be treated like part of our family. How do you include your pets in family activities? How are your pets similar to the other members of your family? 3RD-5TH GRADE: All animals are unique, just like us! Each animal has a unique personality all its own. When we meet new animals we need to be respectful and safe. How do you make sure you’re safe when you meet new animals? Is every new animal you meet comfortable with new situations? 6TH-8TH GRADE: Choose the right pet for you. Not all pets thrive in the same type of homes. Different pets require different levels of commitment, space, and food. What type of pets would do well in an apartment, on a farm, or in a house? How do you make sure all your pets’ needs are being met? 9TH-12TH GRADE: Advocate for Animals. Animals have the right to happy, safe, and healthy lives. That takes help from us. What can you do to help? Sometimes we have to be their voice. If they could talk what do you think they’d say? What advice might they offer? 6
2017 Rescue Roundup On behalf of everyone at SafeHaven Humane Society, we would like to extend a huge thank you to all who supported, attended, and volunteered their time at our ‘Rescue Roundup’ held October 7th at the Albany Boys & Girls Club.
This is SafeHaven’s largest annual fundraising event that helps make it possible to care for and find homes for 2,600 animals each year, as well as helping to support the many important programs SafeHaven offers in our community. Humane Education, Pet Therapy for seniors, Meals on Wheels, Pet Food Pantry and other community outreach opportunities benefit as a result of the generosity shown by our supporters. We are grateful to the more than 300 individuals who came out to enjoy the evening, bid on a huge array of live and silent auction items generously donated by dozens of local businesses and individuals, and make meaningful donations to support the work of SafeHaven Humane Society. Enrichment & Training Tim’s SafeHaven Training Experience A striking puppy named Clyde was adopted at SafeHaven Humane Society in July of 2016. He is now called Tim and lives in a loving home along with his little dog “brother”, Calvin. Everything was going very well with Tim in his new home, until a stage during adolescence when he had a few unexpected and frightening encounters with other dogs, including one with a large wolf hybrid; subsequently causing him to become fearful and reactive towards other dogs. His reactivity and discomfort around dogs grew, triggering him to bark and lunge at them while on walks. That is when the owners decided to get in touch with the SafeHaven Training Department for answers.
JANUARY-MARCH 2018 WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS Trick Training Workshop
Would you like a chance to teach your dog fun new tricks? Teaching tricks is an excellent way to engage with your dog, help build body awareness, challenge your dog's mind and have fun together. SafeHaven's Trick Training Workshop will cover various training and learning theories as well as teach you various tricks to teach your dog. Tricks include: Wave Hello, Bow, Back Up, Spin, Orbit and more. Dogs attending this workshop must be tolerant around dogs and people.
Cost: $25 working spot with your dog, $15 to audit without your dog. Length: 1.5 hours Date: Monday 1/15/2018 @ 6:00 PM
Puppy Games Workshop
Training your new puppy goes beyond basic obedience and should be a fun experience for both of you! This entertaining and informative workshop focuses on tricks and training games that build a puppy’s confidence, motivation and enthusiasm for training. Participating puppies will be taught target training skills, helpful tricks and new ways to play with you that will make training a joy. They will also be given a chance to romp and socialize with other puppies. Recommended for puppies up to six months of age that have had at least three vaccinations.

After a complimentary training lesson (available to all SafeHaven adopted dogs) it was decided that Tim would participate in private training lessons to focus on helping him feel more comfortable around other dogs and work on a handful of other behaviors that his owners wanted to address, including controlling his excitement around the vacuum cleaner. Tim thrived in training and seemed to genuinely enjoy learning and coming to his lessons, frequently make his owners and trainer laugh with his funny antics.

Ultimately, with a combination of positive reinforcement techniques, new management skills and training with a sense of humor, Tim was able to overcome reactivity towards other dogs. His owners can now even get together with friends for doggy play dates! Tim is a perfect example of how sometimes, with a little training and plenty of yummy dog treats, any dog can overcome obstacles.
Living with a Fearful Dog Seminar
This seminar will teach you how to empower your dog through a series of confidence boosting games and fun exercises. You will learn how to use desensitization and counter conditioning to help your dog feel more comfortable around potential stress triggers, as well as techniques to help your dog relax and feel safe. Additional topics covered range from strategies to help dogs with mild separation anxiety to exercises to help dogs that are shy around guests. Dogs do not attend this seminar.

Make An Impact Everyone Can Make a Difference At SafeHaven Humane Society, we know there are many ways you can help shelter pets. In September, we asked for your help in providing every one of our shelter dogs and cats with their own Kuranda Bed. By setting up a program through Kuranda, we were able to have all donated beds shipped directly to SafeHaven and ended up with a total of 37 dog beds and 8 cat beds! We are so appreciative of your kindness and generosity and are happy to have reached our goal in giving all of our shelter animals a bed to call their own while they’re here!
You Can Host a Fundraiser for SafeHaven Humane Society!
Each year, many groups, businesses, clubs, classes and individuals generously sponsor fundraisers to benefit SafeHaven Humane Society. There are hundreds of ways to host your own fundraiser – and each one is a great way to make a difference! One of our youngest donors (pictured here) reaffirmed this statement by thinking of the animals instead of herself on her birthday and selflessly purchased items from our wish list, which can be found on our website. She even included bowties for the cats and kittens in the shelter. Whiledropping off her generous donations, she conveyed to us that
she believes the cats and kittens will look dapper wearing bow-ties in their kennel card photos which will ultimately get them adopted to their forever homes at a faster rate. Who could argue with that logic? Definitely not us! From the staff and animals at SafeHaven, thank you to all of our wonderful donors.

We are so happy to announce our winners for all 3 categories: Leo took the title of Best Dog, Archer won the title of Best Cat, and Charlie took the grand title of Best SafeHaven Alumni. All winners received prize baskets, cat and dog toys and in addition, Charlie won a spot on the cover of this issue’s Pet Press. With your help, we were able to raise $1,921 for the animals! We can’t wait to host this fundraiser next year, so stay tuned for your chance to submit your pet’s photo and vote for your favorite!
Charlie’s Story
Charlie was adopted to Brittany and her fiance about two years ago as a shy and quiet dog. However, she quickly became a silly, energetic part of their family. From night one, she has slept on the bed with her head on the pillows between her two humans. While she doesn’t love fetch or playing with toys, Charlie loves to run just for the sake of running. It is when she is the happiest. Her mom says she has become “the most loyal and constant companion imaginable”.

“When I first moved to Albany in the late 80’s, I wanted to find a local humane society that needed volunteers. I’ve always loved animals, had dogs, cats and a horse through the years. I wanted to do something to help the crisis of homeless pets. It was Linn Humane Society back then and board meetings were public, so I started going to them. Not long after, Osalyn and I took over the semi-annual bake sales and eventually made them into real moneymakers for the animals. I think our record was about $2,000 in one day. We also wrote the quarterly newsletter together. I feel like every donation, no matter how small, does make a difference. Imagine if everyone in Albany alone gave just $5 a month to SafeHaven! Whenever someone I know loses a loved one, including a pet, rather than flowers, I make a donation to SafeHaven. That way,
financial situation so we created the Inner Circle Caregivers Club. This monthly giving program is available to anyone for as little as $22 per month. This monthly commitment helps ensure that every animal that arrives at SafeHaven has food, shelter, and medical care until they find their new home. Community HELPING PETS FIND THEIR WAY BACK HOME

SafeHaven received more than 300 stray cats in 2017. When these cats are reclaimed by their families or adopted, they leave here with an I.D. tag to help them find their way home if it happens again.

Every animal adopted from SafeHaven has a microchip registered to their family to help ensure they find their way home if they become separated or lost. This microchip information can be accessed by your local animal shelter, animal control, and veterinary offices. Another way to ensure your animal finds their way home quickly is by attaching your name and phone number to their collar. Thanks to a generous donation by Jerry and Earlene Claussen, SafeHaven now has the ability to make custom tags for your pet. Each tag costs only $5 and there are 12 different styles to choose from. You may just have to purchase more than one!
Jerry and Earlene have been long-time supporters of SafeHaven Humane Society both personally and through the Golf Club of Oregon. They established the Greystoke fund to help SafeHaven cover medical costs that meet specific criteria. For the last 15 years, the Golf Club of Oregon has hosted the Stars and Stripes Golf Tournament around the 4th of July to help raise funds and friends for the animals of SafeHaven.
Sant a Paws
Every year, SafeHaven hosts a fundraiser called ‘Santa Paws’. During November and December, we take Santa photos with families and their pets at Coastal Farm & Ranch. We have so much fun meeting people and their animals and this year was no different! Santa Paws raised $1,670 for the animals.

4. CREATE YOUR OWN STYLE Repurposing furniture and home decor can be a fun and cost-effective way to redecorate. Websites like Pinterest have endless ideas on how to repurpose old coffee tables, chairs and more! Most of the items found in a thrift shop just need a little TLC and can quickly become your new favorite piece in your home.

5. HELP COUNTLESS ANIMALS FIND HOMES When you shop at Safehaven Gift & Thrift, all of the proceeds go directly towards the animals at SafeHaven. It is a great way to give back to the community while shopping for your own wants and needs!
In 2017, the Gift & Thrift has raised $109,289.66 for the animals.
Did You Know? CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FINAL PHASE SafeHaven Humane Society completed phase one of the Imagine the Possibilities Capital Campaign in 2014. The final phase of our construction project, our on-site Medical Center, is now on the horizon. The new Medical Center, when completed, will be able to provide dedicated medical care for all shelter animals. It would allow SafeHaven to lead the way forward in compassion and care and when completed in its entirety, the Medical Center will encourage partnerships with local veterinarians, as well as students pursuing a variety of careers in veterinary medicine. The new Medical Center will allow us:
· To save more lives · Decrease the amount of stress put on animals requiring spays and neuters by keeping them on site for the surgeries · Provide appropriate isolation areas for incoming animals · Give us the space and resources to provide the best care possible for the animals At first, the numbers seems daunting. To make the new Medical Center a reality, we have a campaign
goal of $2.3 million. We know the challenges we face in raising this amount of money; but we also know that if we break this up into smaller pieces, we can accomplish great things one step at a time, one goal at a time. That is why goal set by the Board of Directors and staff for 2018 is to complete just one small part of this medical center—the Spay/Neuter Surgery suite. Once completed, this will allow for SafeHaven animals to be spayed/neutered right here at SafeHaven. The Spay/Neuter Surgery Suite has an estimated cost of $300,000 to complete. We have raised over $110,000 to date. You’ve seen what SafeHaven can do. You’ve helped us save the forgotten, homeless, and discarded animals and changed their lives. You’ve shown us that, with community support and a whole lot of love, amazing things can happen. We hope that you can find it in your heart to help us reach that next step.
