CONFERENCE GUIDE

2018 NATIONAL CONFERENCE RALEIGH, NC MARCH 22-24, 2018

Welcome Welcome to our 6th annual educational conference. It’s my favorite time of year because our time together is such a confirmation of the amazing, growing and vibrant community we have created together. Your attendance is a testimony to your desire to grow professionally and personally as well as a vote of confidence in us! It’s funny how time passes and for me, the years have become anchored in our annual conference. No sooner does one conference end, than we are busy thinking about and preparing for the next year! Each year we ask ourselves, what went well, what didn’t and what can we do better? I always tell potential members when we have a phone call that once you join APPO, you become our “customer.” I believe it’s our job to always think about how we, as an association, can best serve you, our members. That’s because we know that if we serve you well, you will be able to help your clients well and then we all benefit. These next few days are all about YOU! I know you’ll find the training, speakers, and exhibitors all ready to help you be the best that you can be! So get ready, try to schedule some down time to breathe and recharge and let’s have the time of our lives!

Speakers: Intensives Intensive I: How to Help Your Clients Emerge From Digital Photo Chaos Trainer: Caroline Guntur A native of Ystad, Sweden, Caroline Guntur currently resides just outside of Chicago, IL, where she runs The Swedish Organizer, LLC, a company that provides customized family history solutions to clients around the world, including archiving, scanning, and photo organizing. Caroline is a Certified Photo Organizer, Personal Historian, and Professional Genealogist, with a B.A. degree in Visual Communications from Hawaii Pacific University and an M.A. degree in Arts & Media Management from Columbia College. She currently serves as Director of Technology & Communications for NAPOChicago, and blogs over at OrganizingPhotos.net. She is a member of APPO, NAPO, APG, and NGS.

Intensive II: Business Foundations: The APPO Success Cycle Trainer: Jill Yesko Jill Yesko is a Certified Professional Organizer and President of Discover Organizing Inc., headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Before starting her company in 2003, Jill was a Human Resources Director, and way before that, she was a highly underpaid (but happy) social worker. She is the extremely proud (and single) mother of two very smart kids. Jill employs a team of experienced, professional organizers who help people organize, downsize, and manage their time, photos, possessions and productivity at home and in the office. In addition to being a Certified Professional Organizer, she is also a Certified Personal Photo Organizer. Jill is an active member of NAIPC, NAPO, NASMM, and APPO. She is a member of the National Speakers Association and gives presentations to national conferences for multiple associations, as well as local presentations in Pittsburgh to various companies and groups. In other words, Jill doesn’t sleep.

Speakers: Intensives Intensive III: Masterclass Facilitator: Jane Pollak Jane Pollak is one of the northeast’s foremost coaches of entrepreneurial women and a living example of how to turn a passion into a thriving business. A nationally recognized speaker, certified coach, author, blogger and lifestyle entrepreneur with over 30 years of business experience, Jane loves sharing inspirational, yet practical, lessons with like-minded entrepreneurs.

Speakers: General Session Founder’s Message Cathi Nelson, APPO Founder and CEO All of us who’ve spent time with kids know the difference between an inside voice and an outside voice. If the APPO leadership were described as two voices, Cathi Nelson would be the outside voice. Whether its an interview with the New York Times, meeting with Nikon to sell a corporate sponsorship, or speaking at Rootstech, Cathi issues the clarion call of the new photo organizing industry: the importance of keeping our stories alive. Cathi’s peripatetic energy and her blaze of a voice have transformed photo organizing from an idea into a world movement, gaining ground every day. And this is one quality of Cathi’s voice that’s so spectacular: while she began as a soloist, now she is but one of many voices of a choir that is the photo industry, a being with its own voice and its own wings. Because, after all, the reason Cathi’s been out there talking for APPO for the past nine years has nothing to do with her. It’s about the right of all humans to tell and preserve their stories.

Preparing for Growth Lisa Kurtz, APPO COO If the APPO leadership were described as two voices, Lisa Kurtz would be the inside voice. Calm, measured, exacting, Lisa doesn’t have to speak loudly to have an impact. With an astonishing list of responsibilities as Chief Operating Officer, Lisa has been the one creating APPO’s infrastructure, making decisions about marketing, membership, training and annual conferences. Occasionally Lisa’s steadiness is punctuated by her vivacious personality and membership gets a glimpse of her best-kept secret: her inner rock star who loves nothing more than providing laughter, connection, and the music of a shared community.
