Heated emotions from anti-Russian protesters

O

ne of the leaders of the anti-Russian mob that attacked a tour agency in Bang Tao on Monday afternoon (January 28) says he ripped down the agency’s sign in protest against Russian businesses he says are undercutting the local market. Thai taxi driver Kalip Panan pulled down the shop sign belonging to Russianoperated tour company Alex Tour in Bang Tao, after being encouraged to by other locals. Local businessmen first announced the planned protest on the weekend, placing banners all around Bang Tao

streets where several Russian tour agencies (including Alex Tour) are located. No Russians were present during Monday’s protest – only around 100 Thai taxi drivers and other businesspeople carrying signs saying “Alex Tour get out” and “Russian business get out”. Several other tour agencies were also closed during the protest. Representatives of Alex Tour were not willing to talk to the media on Wednesday. Mr Kalip said he was angry about Russians doing business in the area, because they were charging lower prices than their Thai counterparts, and also attracting tourists who

spoke the Russian language. They were taking business and jobs away from the local Thai people, including in the taxi, laundry and restaurant businesses, the protesters said, adding that some Russians were even being hired as waiters and waitresses. “Whenever Russian tourists walk past, they go to the Russian-speaking businesses. The Russian businesspeople speak about the Thai people in a bad way – they say our services are expensive and we cheat people out of their money, and we have bad manners. “So how can we keep living here? I have to do something to protect the rights of the local

people,” he told The Phuket News. Another protestor said he didn’t like the fact the Russian restaurant workers would also offer tour packages to customers when they visited the restaurants. “We do not want the Russian businesses to operate in Bang Tao,” he said. One of the representatives of the Thai group gave officials a letter of concern, outlining their problems. Deputy Phuket Provincial Commander Pol Col Arun Keawwati, Cherngtalay Or Bor Tor president Ma-ann Samran, and Cherng Talay Pol Col Chanuchan Cholsuwat attended the protest.

Protest triggers work permit clamp down Nattha Thepbamrung reporter2@thephuketnews.com

MONDAY’S “ANTI-RUS -sian” protest by Thai taxi drivers in Bang Tao has resulted in a crackdown on foreigners working illegally in Phuket, either without a work permit or doing different jobs to what their work permit states. During the protest, the Thai businesspeople present appeared unconcerned about whether the Russians were operating legally or not – they just wanted them out – but they also asked officials to check the legality of the businesses. In trying to deal with the problem, local government officials say they will strongly

Ma-ann Samran, the president of Cherngtalay Or Bor Tor, far left, listens to protesters. enforce business licences and work permits for foreigners. Some of the businesses targeted in the protest are suspected of operating illegally, authorities say. The meeting between protesters and provincial officials

concluded that to help solve the problem, authorities must ensure businesses are operating legally, and staff have work permits, Ma-ann Samran, the president of Cherngtalay Or Bor Tor said. Mr Ma-ann said local au-

thorities are going to strictly enforce these requirements. If foreigners are caught working without a work permit, they will be arrested immediately, he said. Mr Ma-ann said there were two main issues, the first was foreigners holding a work permit but doing a different job than was stated on the permit, and the second was

foreigners who didn’t have a work permit at all. Mr Ma-ann said, “there are only 51 foreigners who hold a work permit to work in the Thalang area,” which included the three main “foreigner areas” of Pak Lok, Cherng Talay and Bang Tao. There were many people working illegally in the area, he said. Meanwhile, Santi Udomkiratak, Deputy Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation for the provinces of Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga said Thai people cannot complain about Russian businesses that are operating legally. “When Russian businesses are operating illegally, they can be prosecuted. But the ones that are legal – we cannot complain about them or ask them to close. “

Tourists hurt in boating mishap FIVE TOURISTS – TWO Australians, one American, one Indonesian and one Malaysian – were injured late Wednesday morning (January 30) when their boat was hit by a strong wave about one kilometre off the coast of Chalong. A staff member from Andawaree Co Ltd, which operated the tour, said the boat was hit by a wave just as it passed Koh Kiaw, enroute to Phi Phi island from Phuket. On board were 40 tourists from a range of countries, but a large majority were Americans. Five women were hurt when they fell down, after they lost their balance when the boat was hit by the wave. A rescue team representative said one Indonesian tourist had an ear injury, and the other four had back and muscle pain from falling. One Australian who had a back injury would stay in Phuket International Hospital overnight. All medical charges will be covered by the company insurance, the company representative said.

No travel insurance proves costly for British traveller Claire Connell editor1@thephuketnews.com

British man who travelled to Thailand without travel insurance is paying a hefty price after he suffered a heart attack in Phuket on Saturday. He is now in intensive care at Bangkok Hospital Phuket with mounting hospital bills. Gareth Harnett, 30, a builder from Kent in England, was on holiday with five other friends when he had a heart attack while at the Diamond Cliff Resort in Patong. Mr Harnett’s friends were swimming in the pool and went to see where their friend was, only to be told by reception staff he had had an asthma attack and was taken to Patong Hospital, then transferred to Vachira Hospital. “When we got to Vachira we were told by the doctor he actually had a heart attack and was in intensive care,” said Gareth’s travelling companion and one of his best friends Patrick Dyett, also 30. Mr Dyett decided to move his friend immediately to a

With limited family support, friends have set up a Paypal fund to help with medical costs. “So far I’ve spent more than 10,000 pounds (B468,000) keeping him at this hospital,” said Mr Dyett. “We set up a page on Facebook, and he’s a very popular guy so we raised almost 12,000 pounds (B560,000) in the last Gareth Harnett was on holiday in Phuket when he had a heart attack. Liquor ban proposal on hold DR SAMAN “LIQUOR BUSTer” Futrakul’s campaign to get alcohol off Thailand’s streets has been delayed while details are sorted and because the cabinet committee is so busy, he said. If the plan of Dr Saman, president of the Disease Control Department’s Office of Alcohol Beverage and Tobacco Consumption Control Committee, goes ahead, the selling of alcohol in public places in Phuket, and across Thailand at large, will be banned, along with drinking in many public places. “There is already an actual

law – an act that bans the sale of food, beverages and other items on the street and footpath. So this regulation comes under that same law, and we will enforce it strictly,” Dr Saman said. He added that the cabinet were very busy at the moment, so the new regulation had been put on hold. But Dr Saman said it was not being ignored, as it had already been approved by the Ministry of Public Health last year. “If t he reg ulat ion is launched, we will suppress only the alcohol sellers on the

street and footpaths.” Dr Saman’s proposed regulation mandates a ban on all alcohol sales on footpaths, pavement and streets – which would also apply to small mobile food shops. In addition, the sale and consumption of alcohol in municipal and provincial parks would be prohibited. These would include Loma Park – the centre for Phuket Bike Week – and Saphan Hin next to Phuket Town, epicentre of Songkran celebrations and many other public events. The new regulation would also cover places such as Bangla Rd.

It’s not a good idea, and now it’s turned out to be a very expensive mistake. “For the sake of 50 or 100 pounds (B2,000-5,000) it’s not worth taking the risk. Especially in a place like Thailand. People think it’s all palm trees and lovely beaches, but if you fall ill out here... unless you have got money, you’re in trouble. “Whether you’re in Europe or anywhere in the world, it’s crucial to have it. “Obviously it has affected Gareth because he’s ill, but it’s affected his friends as well, and my family. “I’ve got two children and a wife at home expecting me to return home (to the UK) today. But I’m not going home until he’s better. “It’s touched and affected a lot of people. He’ll be getting a good telling off when he’s home.”

IN BRIEF Police search for suspects in Asian man bashing Police are looking for four or five people believed to be involved in the beating to death of an Asian man, who was found tied to a tree at 3am last Thursday (January 24). The body of the man, who is estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old, was found tied to a tree at the Saphan Pla Pier, east of Phuket Town, with severe head injuries. Police have not been able to identify the man but believe he was murdered. A broken bottle and a hefty piece of wood were found nearby, and are believed to be the murder weapons.

round 205 Rohingya packed into a crowded boat arrived in Phuket waters near Racha Noi island on Tuesday (January 29), before being met by the Thai Navy who gave them fresh water before moving them on towards Malaysia. The vessel was reported floating in the sea off Racha Noi island around 11am by local fishermen. The fishermen found the boat crammed with 205 male Rohingya, both adults and children, who were in desperate need of food and water. The group had left Myanmar on January 25 on their way to Muslim-majority Malaysia, where they hope they will be allowed to remain. The Rohingya were trying

given food and water before leaving for Malaysia. Around 500 Rohingya, originating from the Rakhine State in Myanmar, remain in Phang Nga after arriving via boat in recent months. They are now living in Kura Buri community hall, Ban Hin Lad Mosque and Takua Pa foster homes and are being cared for by the community. Manit Pianthong, Kura Buri District Chief told The Phuket News that immigration officers were helping them create identification profiles, and medical staff were giving them vaccines and checking their health. “Donations of clothes, blankets, food and water keeps arriving, while the Muslim group from Ban Hin Lad Mosque also came to help cook Muslim food for the

Rohingya,” Mr Manit said. Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit visited Kura Buri last Saturday (January 26), and said he had coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request a budget for the next six months to help the Rohingya. Meanwhile, a top official said on Monday that Thailand will turn away any more Rohingya boat people. “The Thai navy from now on will be stricter with them and will no longer allow them to land,” National Security Council secretary-general Paradorn Pattanathabutr said. “If we find them, we will provide them with food, water and necessities so they can go to their destinations.” Anyone willing to donate can contact Ahmad Layah, Vice President of Islamic Council, on 086-741-7450.

Locals pushed their boat away from the shore before calling the Thai Navy to come and help. The Navy gave the Rohingya drinking water, and sprayed them with water to cool them down from the heat – many of the people had spent hours on the boat’s outside deck under the scorching sun. The Rohingya then gave the Navy men a round of applause to say thank you for their help before heading off towards Malaysia. Meanwhile in Ranong, a boat carrying about 140 Rohingya migrants was spotted floating about 5.5 kilometres off Phayam island on Tuesday. The Rohingya there were also

Australian shooters remain in custody

Alasdair Forbes execeditor@thephuketnews.com

T

he two Australians charged with mistakenly shooting two German tourists were last Thursday (January 24) refused bail by the Phuket Court and as of Wednesday (January 30) remained locked up in Phuket Provincial Prison. John Cohen, 33, thought to be from Sydney, fired at least two shots in crowded Soi Sansabai on January 22 in an attempt to hit a Danish man, who owed money to him and another Australian man. However he missed his intended target and instead hit two innocent German tourists, who required hospitalisation. He was charged with attempted murder and having a gun in a public place. The other Australian, Adam Shea, 26, from Tasmania, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Police have named the Dane as Dennis Mark Knudsen, also known as “Dannie” or “Mike Chilli”.

The hefty 24-year-old body-builder had made the news briefly in September when he was arrested in Pattaya after renting a big bike in Phuket on June 1, and then demanding the owner pay him for its return. On September 20, the Pattaya One news site reported, “Mr Knudsen is alleged to have rented a motorbike from a shop in … Phuket … and failed to return the vehicle in accordance with the rental agreement. “When the owner of the bike contacted Mr Knudsen, he is alleged to have demanded money otherwise the bike would not be returned. The case was reported to Kathu Police Station on August 27 and an arrest warrant was issued on the same day by Phuket Provincial Court, it was reported. After he was sent back to Phuket, Knudsen was released on bail, but then failed to turn up at court for hearings of his case. After their arrest, Aus-

tralians Cohen and Shea said Knudsen owed them B1 million – B380,000 for a big bike and the remainder in interest – and had paid them nothing. Last Tuesday morning a court confirmed that they were entitled to the sum. When asked whether the bike involved in the Pattaya case and the one behind the shooting in Soi Sansabai were different bikes or the same one, an investigator working on the shooting case said he did not know. Meanwhile, there is rising speculation that both arrested men are members of an Australian outlaw biker gang, possibly the Rebels. The Rebels are Australia’s largest gang, with around 2,000 members. This possibility was given extra credence last week when the Acting Commissioner of New South Wales Police, Nick Kaldas, told press in Sydney that although there had not yet been any contact with Thai police, “We’re obviously happy to help in any way that we can.”

The Italian man, aged 46, was being cared for at the tourist police safe house, behind the Tourist Police Station in Phuket Town. Phuket resident Worwit Amorsupakul parked his car outside a laundry shop opposite Phuket Technical College on Yaowarat Rd in Phuket Town on Sunday. W hen he exited the shop he found his car had been taken. He immediately reported it to police who spread the message across police stations on

Embassy to organise a f light home. Local residents said the Italian man tried to kill himself by jumping off Bang Wad Dam in Kathu. He had been under tourist police care since. Police say he has mental health problems and is depressed.

Dennis Knudsen in Pattaya. Photo: Pattaya One “We don’t have any jurisdiction over there but I would say that any spreading influence of bikie groups, whether it’s interstate or overseas, it’s something we’re concerned about, we’re not happy about it,” he was quoted as saying in the Daily Telegraph. Thai police have branded the reports that Cohen is a member of the Rebels as “just a rumour”, but sources in Phuket’s legitimate biker community have confirmed that they have seen him on

bike rides wearing Rebels “colours” – the leather jacket with Rebels insignia. One expressed surprise at Cohen’s involvement in the shooting. “He’s a good bloke,” he said. But he added that Thai police have been aware of the presence in Phuket of members of the Hell’s Angels and Bandidos gangs – two of the most notoriously violent groups – and have asked the legitimate bikers “to keep an eye on them”.

IN BRIEF Police question two Hilton staff Two employees from the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa have been brought in for police questioning in relation to the murder of HR Director Jintana Mahattanapak. “They were warned by Mrs Jintana about their work – she said it was not good enough,” said Pol Maj Gen Choti Chavalviwat, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police When questioned, the pair said they did not know about the murder. Police had no further evidence so they were let go.

Pair arrested for murder, body dumping Phuket police arrested two men on Saturday (January 26) for their involvement in the murder of Phuket man Piti Suntoonsawat. Suchart Ratsami, 26, and Chanchai Kanpien, 38, were charged with murdering Mr Piti, and dumping his body in a park area on the outskirts of Phuket Town in March 2011. New Zealand yachtsman drowns in Chalong Bay N

ew Zealand sailor Richard Spraggs, 59, drowned in Chalong Bay early last Friday morning (January 25) after falling off his yacht, La Zingara, during a storm. Mr Spraggs was a regular visitor to Phuket for six years and was well-known in Ao Chalong yachting circles. Police said that during the storm he tried to push a nearby boat away from his yacht and lost his balance, hitting his head on the nearby boat as he fell. He lost consciousness and fell into the

water, where he drowned, police said. “After he fell from the deck, a friend on another boat nearby went to help him and pulled him out of the water, but was unable to revive him,” said Pol Capt Chianchai Duangsuwan, of Chalong police. Capt Chianchai said that there was a storm in the area at the time and it was raining heavily, a factor he believed might have contributed to Mr Spragg’s accident. Phuket Cruising Yacht Club club captain Brent Mc-

Innes said Mr Spraggs had been involved with the club for a year or so. “He was a boat owning member of the club. He used to come down the place every day – he was a friendly happy guy. He would talk with most people who came in, and he lived on his boat in the Chalong anchorage.” Mr McInnes described Mr Spraggs as a “cruising yachtie”. New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty Times newspaper said Mr Spraggs leaves behind his daughter, Stevie Spraggs.

A PHUKET WOMAN IS urging others to beware of a scam artist posing as a real estate agent, who she says almost tricked her into playing a Chinese board game in return for her house and its chanote title. This has been a relatively common scam in Thailand but has not made headlines in Phuket for several years. Phuket resident Tanya Kitti said after she put up a sign advertising her house for sale she was approached by a fake housing “agent” at her Pa Klok home last Wednesday (January 23). The agent ended up taking her and her friend “Noi” to an apartment in Cherng Talay last Thursday (January 24). “I wanted to sell my house in Pa Klok for B8.5 million,” Mrs Tanya told The Phuket News. An agent named “Cha” v i s i t e d M r s Ta n y a o n Wednesday, with two accomplices – one, a short tanned man aged around 40 years old, and the other, a good-looking tall lady, aged in her late 40s. They spoke on Wednesday and made an appointment for the following day to sign the contact. “They came in an expen-

Photo: timquijano sive car, and said their boss wanted to buy my house, but he was unable to come. So the lady said we should all go to her hotel,” Mrs Tanya said. Mrs Tanya was asked to bring the chanote title of her house. “I didn’t think anything of it, so I brought the real chanote with me, and went with them,” she said. Mrs Tanya, her friend Noi, and the three “agents” headed to Cherng Talay. But when they arrived, they found themselves at an apartment, not at a hotel, which made the women feel uneasy.

T hey followed the “agents” to an empty room on the third floor. “I felt there was somet h i ng w rong,” said M rs Tanya. T hen the boss of the agents arrived – a Chineselooking man aged around 70 years old, with a ChineseThai accent – who said he wanted to buy Mrs Tanya’s house for his wife. “He arrived with a big bag of cash which he said was B10m, intended for the purchase of my house. The secretary opened the zip and showed a small amount of it

to me,” Mrs Tanya said. She was then encouraged to play a round of the ancient Chinese tile game Mahjong and was explained the rules, by which time she was feeling very uneasy about the situation and her friend was scared. Mrs Tanya and her friend were eventually let go without playing the game – if she had played, the agents would have ideally won the game and in turn “won” the valuable chanote title. She believed she was let go because the agents thought she was familiar

with the area, and also that she was operating a GPS on her phone and informing someone where she was. “Luckily, the agent let us go. He said if I wanted to leave and did not care about the B10m then I could go, but he would meet me at a restaurant near my house to talk again. “But he did not show up that day and he never contacted me again.” However, Mrs Tanya said the agent still contacted another friend of hers many times to find out about other houses that were for sale in the area, and invited the friend several times to play the board game again.Mrs Tanya spoke with her American retiree neighbour, who said he was also tricked by the agent “Cha”. The American said Cha promised to help him sell his car, but then disappeared with it several months ago. The American told Mrs Tanya that based on her description it was the same man. “I want to warn everyone who wants to sell their property to be careful – do not believe people easily. I was lucky that I did not lose everything, but some people may not be as lucky as me,” said Mrs Tanya.

Relief at hand for neighbours of stinking klong A TEAM FROM THE Damrongtham Centre visited the luxury Surin Springs villas and apartments development in Cherng Talay to examine a complaint about a stinking klong that keeps overflowing. James Saunders, Director of CBRE and representing the Surin Spring owners, said the klong runs through private land next to the development. Mr Saunders said that the common drains in Surin Springs are now also clogged and backing up because of the shallowness of the klong. After inspecting the klong and holding a meeting with Damrongtham Center Chief Prapan Kanprasang and Cherng Talay Mayor Ma-ann Samran, Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkhaosuthirak said, “I have told Mr Ma-ann to talk with the owner of the land through which the klong flows. “We plan to dredge it to make the water flow more easily, which will solve the flooding problem and also the problem of the waste water drains from Surin Springs,” he added. Mayor Ma-ann said, “I will ask the owner of the land to donate a part of it to Cherng Talay OrBorTor so that we can widen the klong.” But Mayor Ma-ann also asked Mr Saunders for his help in getting foreigners who own villas in Cherng Talay to pay their property taxes. He pointed out that CBRE acts as management company for many foreign-owned properties, so it should be able to help. “There are a lot of new luxury properties for rent or lease nowadays. Many of them earn large amounts of money from Phuket, but they neglect to pay property taxes,” the mayor said.

round 200 fired up Kamala locals gathered at the Kamala Police Station in anger last Thursday (January 24) after an 18-year-old boy became the victim of a lynch-mob style attack. The teenager, who was reported to have been wearing traditional-style Muslim clothing, was caught stealing various items last month but managed to evade police capture. His choice of attire and criminal behaviour angered the predominantly Muslim crowd. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued. Around 7pm last Thursday, Pol Cpl Suwit Chatri spotted the teen at a gas station in Kamala, and recognised him. Seeing the police, the boy tried to evade capture. Upon hearing what was going on, around 20 locals then tried to help police to capture the teenager, with the group all chasing him. The teenager escaped into the under-construction Kamala

Locals got to the teenager first and began hitting him with a piece of wood, determined to make the teenager pay for his alleged crime. Cpl Suwit tried to stop the angry locals, by standing in front of the teenager, and raised a

gun in the air. Some misunderstanding took place, with the locals thinking the police were going to hurt them. More and more locals heard the commotion and joined in. Once the situation was eventually diffused, the teenager was taken to hospital and locals followed the police to the police station in anger.

Pol Maj Somnurk Damkaew said the residents were scared and worried there would be a lot of violence. The group left the police station after Maj Gen Choti Chavalviwat, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police, explained the situation to them. “It rained hard last night and Maj Gen Choti went to the police station. He tried

to talk and explain to them. Everyone left at around midnight,” Maj Somnurk told The Phuket News. “If Cpl Suwit did not stop the people [from attacking], the boy would have died,” he added. The teenager was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and will be spoken to by police when his condition improves.

wiss exchange stu-dent Tscherina Nora Janisch, 22, first reported missing while on holiday in Thailand, has been discovered in a Ranong prison, locked up for allegedly stealing a camera belonging to the immigration office. Ms Janisch, a student at the University of Zurich, was on a student exchange programme at the National University of Singapore. She had been on

holiday in Thailand since the beginning of December. She was first reported missing via travel website Travelfish. com, by her mother, Elizabeth Janisch, in Switzerland. Concerned about her daughter’s whereabouts, Mrs Janisch posted a forum message on the website asking for information or sightings of her daughter. The Swiss Embassy then contacted Pol Maj Gen Roy

Ingpairoj, the Tourist Police Commander in Bangkok, who spread the news around Thailand’s tourist police stations, including the one in Ranong. While this was going on, Ms Janisch had been arrested by Ranong Tourist Police on December 25 after, police say, she tried to steal a Canon camera belonging to the immigration office. She was sent to the Ranong Police Station.

Plodprasop denies meddling in WFMC DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER Plodprasop Suraswadi denies he is meddling in the government’s selection of contenders for its B300 billion water management projects. Mr Plodprasop chairs the government’s Water and Flood Management Commission (WFMC). He said on January 29 he had not lobbied for any contender to be selected or dropped. The prime minister was not involved in the selections either, he added. A source at the commis-

sion had said the process had been held up for the benefit of a Chinese bidder. The WFMC academic and analytical sub-committee will meet today to conclude its selection of the qualified contenders. The cabinet will review the selections on February 5. Mr Plodprasop said the list of qualified contenders should be announced on February 7. The results were originally set to be released on January 25, pending the cabinet’s review.

Apichart Anukul-ampai, head of the WFMC’s academic and analytical sub-committee, said the nomination of eight qualified contenders was postponed because officials had to verify their registration in their native countries. However, a member of the WFMC said the postponement resulted from a reluctance by members to disqualify a Chinese company. Although the selection process was slightly behind schedule, Mr Plodprasop insisted the work would be fin-

orth Korea was a final frontier for Google Maps. It took years and the help of amateur map-makers who once lived there or knew people who did to add gulags, streets and other details to what was long a patch of grey at the online atlas. Updating the map of North Korea promised on Tuesday to be the beginning of Google pulling back the curtain on the lay of the land in the notoriously isolated state using the power of the crowd. “North Korea was the last place that we had no mapping data,” said Google Asia-Pacific head of product public relations David Marx. “Our mapping team is not happy until they have a true mirror of the world in digital space, so the challenge is still there and to keep working.” North Korea was essentially a blank canvas to users of Google’s “Map Maker,” which gives people tools to enhance online maps with knowledge of local venues, roads, businesses, landmarks and more. “Citizen cartographers” have been uploading suggested edits to Google’s online map of North Korea since 2009 and a time-lapse video of details emerging about the capital Pyongyang was uploaded to YouTube in October of 2011. The snippet at the Googleowned video sharing service had logged 1,402 views as of January 30

Map and satellite views of the North Korean capital Pyongyang. Google is pulling back the curtain on the notoriously isolated state using the power of the crowd. Images: Google The collaboratively created map of North Korea now on display at Google offers a detailed layout of Pyongyang, showing hospitals, subway stops and schools. Outside the capital, the detail is sketchier, but noticeable on an overview of the country are a series of citysized, grey-coloured areas which, when zoomed in on,

are identified as sprawling re-education camps. “For any of our Map Maker countries – whether India or North Korea – we rely on users’ knowledge of a place, and Moderators use a variety of sources to verify user edits,” Marx said. “All changes are moderated and most of them are reviewed by fellow mapping

volunteers in the Map Maker community,” he continued. Greg Scarlatoiu, executive director of the Washingtonbased Committee on Human Rights in North Korea, said that much of the data on the maps was already available on Google Earth. The information generally came from defectors or human rights groups that tried to

Anti-whalers intercept Japanese fleet ANTI-WHALING ACTIVist group Sea Shepherd said Wednesday it had intercepted the Japanese fleet in its annual Southern Ocean hunt “before a single harpoon has been fired”. expose developments in the opaque state, he maintained. “This is overall a positive development, but it is not a major breakthrough,” said Scarlatoiu. “Any additional information is welcome,” he continued. “The problem we have is that, unlike in Sudan for example, we do not have visual images from North Korea.” The people least able to benefit from the improved online map of the country will be the North Koreans themselves, who live in one of the most isolated and highly censored societies on the planet. North Korea has a domestic intranet, but it is cut off from the rest of the world, allowing its very limited number of users to exchange state-approved information and little more. Access to the full-blown internet is for the super-elite only, meaning a few hundred people or maybe 1,000 at most, experts estimate. Internet Age mapping technologies have proven to create jobs and stimulate business, and North Korea stands to benefit from embracing such digital tools, according to Google Maps policy analyst Charlie Hale. “Embracing mapping in North Korea would lead to economic benefits,” Hale said. “It lays a crucial foundation and infrastructure that you can build on.” There was no indication from Google that it had heard any reaction to the updated North Korea map from gov-

ernment officials there. Google downplayed the timing of the North Korea map update, which came shortly after a secretive visit to the country by the California Internet titan’s chairman, Eric Schmidt. Schmidt has openly decried what he fears is the “balkanisation” of the internet by countries that cut users off from the rest of the world. Schmidt’s teenage daughter shed some light on the trip less than two weeks ago by writing a first-hand account of the visit to a “very, very strange” country. In a blog posting entitled “It might not get weirder than this”, Sophie Schmidt provided a candid take on the controversial three-day trip earlier this month that was criticised by the US government. Schmidt, 19, had accompanied her father on the visit as part of a delegation led by Bill Richardson, the former US ambassador to the United Nations. “Our trip was a mixture of highly-staged encounters, tightly-orchestrated viewings and what seemed like genuine human moments,” she wrote. “We had zero interactions with non-state-approved North Koreans and were never far from our two minders.” On his return, Eric Schmidt said he had told North Korea it would not develop unless it embraces Internet freedom – a prospect dismissed by most observers as inconceivable. Google did not indicate whether the Schmidts contributed to the updated online map. Korea. AFP

Is this woman the future of South Africa? Johannes Myburgh

O

ne of South Africa’s most dynamic women appears set to enter politics, setting off rampant conjecture about whether she could finally help forge a viable alternative to the seemingly unshakeable African National Congress. Something close to hysteria greeted news that the celebrated academic and liberal darling Mamphela Ramphele – a former World Bank managing director and anti-apartheid activist – has been wooing potential donors to a new party. The idea of a political group one day emerging as a serious rival to the ultradominant African National Congress is a perennial topic

of conversation among South Africa’s political class, as the ANC has maintained a firm grip on power since the end of apartheid in 1994. As a highly qualified black woman with a solid history of anti-apartheid struggle, including a relationship with slain Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko, Ramphele has a formidable profile in a nation obsessed with identity politics. “She is one of the great success stories of post-apartheid South Africa,” said Adam Habib from the University of Johannesburg. After she founded the Black Consciousness movement with Biko, who was murdered in police custody in 1977, authorities banished her to a remote northern town until 1984.

A doctor and successful businesswoman, the 65-yearold Ramphele holds a commerce degree and a doctorate in social anthropology, and was the first black woman to run a South African university. Today she sits on the board of several companies. Although she has frequently joined causes championed by the ANC, she has become increasingly outspoken about the party’s rule. She recently wrote a book that was critical of the country’s trajectory and in interviews has called the ruling party “corrupt” and “unaccountable”. The ANC, Ramphele argues, has failed to improve the lot of impoverished blacks in what remains one of the world’s most unequal nations

19 years after the end of apartheid. “Is it possible to have a liberation movement transforming itself into a democratic governing party?” she asked in a BBC interview last year. “There were glimpses of it during the (Nelson) Mandela administration... but the rest of the ANC, quite frankly, from the very beginning was more about taking control and... stepping into the shoes of the former coloniser.” Recently Ramphele is said to have been fund-raising in the United States, where she confessed “she is now going into politics to save the country”, according to the City Press newspaper. On Tuesday she went out of her way not to deny those reports in a statement. “I have always been clear in articulating my views on matters of public importance and will speak on my own behalf about any decisions I might take about my future engagements.” Susan Booysen, political analyst with the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, said Ramphele is “really pre-empting this through her publications and social commentary that there is some political party or some political role in her future.” Her timing is impeccable, just one year before presidential elections. And Ramphele’s squeakyclean reputation could give the

Some speculated she might join main opposition party the Democratic Alliance (DA), but the party struggles to appeal to the poor masses – the backbone of the ANC’s electoral dominance.

“Its image continues to remain the image of a rich person’s party,” Habib said. But without the wide network of an established party or support base, it will be a long road for any new party. “The question is can she establish a viable opposition party? We had many attempts at establishing opposition parties. Most have petered out,” Habib said. A case in point is the Congress of the People. Founded by ANC dissidents in 2008, it drew seven per cent of votes in general polls a year later. In-fighting has now driven the party to the brink of implosion. AFP

Thai Gov coffers get boost THE MINISTRY OF FInance has disclosed that the government earned B94 billion higher in revenue in the previous financial year compared to that of the year before. According to DirectorGeneral of Fiscal Policy Office Dr Somchai Sujjapongse, during the first quarter of the 2013 fiscal year, from October to December 2012, the government collected almost B500 billion. The figure is higher than the amount collected in the prior year by almost B95 billion, or by 23.3 per cent. Dr. Somchai said the majority of the revenue came from VAT and vehicle tax, which indicated an improving economy. Other sources of income, he said, were from the bidding of the 3G licences and the first-car policy. The government, during the same period, spent B786 billion or nearly B300 billion higher than it did the year before. The higher spending was due to the government’s economic stimulus policy as well as the delay in the enforcement of the spending bill during the previous fiscal year. Given the income and expenses, the country ran a balance of budget deficit of B404 billion. Dr Somchai also pointed out that the Thai economy is growing continuously as a result of domestic consumption as well as government spending, while the treasury reserves remain strong. He said this will enable the government to continue to promote investment and encourage consumer spending to further drive the Thai economy this year. NNT

Japan’s top three automakers posted record sales last year Hiroshi Hiyama

J

apan’s three biggest automakers – Toyota, Nissan and Honda – on Monday posted record sales for 2012, as the results confirmed that Toyota recaptured the world’s biggest automaker crown. The rosy results underscored the trio’s recovery after Japan’s quake-tsunami disaster in 2011 devastated sales and production, and highlighted strong demand in the key Asian and US markets. That helped offset weakness in debt-hit Europe and a downturn in China stemming from a diplomatic row that sparked a consumer boycott of Japanese goods in China, the world’s biggest vehicle market. On Monday, Toyota said sales last year soared 22.6 per cent to 9.75 million vehicles, while Nissan saw a 5.8 per cent on-year rise to 4.94 million units with record numbers in the US market. Honda, Japan’s numberthree automaker, logged sales of 3.81 million vehicles, up from 3.09 million a year earlier. The latest figures confirmed

Flooding of the Honda factory in Rojana Industrial Park, Ayutthaya, October 2011. that Toyota regained the global sales title which it lost in 2011 to US-based General Motors, largely due to the natural disasters. The crisis and flooding in Thailand – where Japanese automakers have production plants – during 2011 marked a “particularly harsh year”, said Nomura auto analyst Masataka Kunugimoto. “2012 is the year we saw things becoming normal again,” he said. However, Nissan, partowned by France’s Renault, warned in November that its

net profit for the fiscal year through March would be down 20 per cent to 320 billion yen (US$3.52 billion), citing its heavy exposure to China. Honda has blamed the territorial row with Beijing over an East China Sea island chain – and a strong yen – for a 20 per cent cut to its annual profit forecast. Less affected by the dispute, Toyota hiked its profit forecast to 780 billion yen for the same period, up from 760 billion yen, although it trimmed its annual sales forecast to 21.3 trillion yen and credited

much of its improved earnings outlook to cost cuts. The long-standing row f lared again in September when Tokyo nationalised some of the tiny archipelago that is also claimed by Beijing, setting off huge demonstrations across China and the consumer boycott. Japanese factories and businesses across China temporarily closed or scaled back operations over fears of being targeted by angry mobs. Nissan’s chief executive Carlos Ghosn has warned that the firm would think twice

about making new investments in China, where it has several production plants with a new factory in the northeastern city of Dalian planned for 2014. On the production side, Toyota said Monday that it made 9.90 million vehicles last year, up 26.1 per cent, while Nissan posted a 5.5 per cent production increase to 4.88 million units in 2012. The automakers have been forced to recall millions of vehicles over safety and quality concerns in recent years, while being hit by the strong yen which makes their products less competitive overseas and shrinks repatriated foreign income. The unit hit record highs around 75 against the dollar in late 2011 and remained strong through most of last year until Japan’s new conservative government swept to power in December. Its promises to pressure the Bank of Japan for aggressive easing to boost the world’s third-largest economy has sent the yen into a steep dive to below the 90-level on the dollar. AFP

Thailand tourism arrivals pass 22 million in 2012 THAILAND HAS ACHIEVed record-breaking visitor arrivals, crossing the 22 million mark for the first time in 2012. Figures tabulated by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports for January to December 2012 show total arrivals by nationality of 22,303,065, up 15.98 per cent over 2011. Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said, “We are overjoyed to have achieved this result in the year the people of Thailand commemorated the 85th birthday of His Majesty the King. “It is also a tribute to the cooperation and creativity of the entire Thai travel and

tourism industry for the huge effort that has been made to ensure that travel and tourism remains a leading industry for job creation, distribution of income nationwide and contribution to culture, heritage and environmental preservation.” The highlight of the results was the fact that six countries, five of which are within the Asia-Pacific region, are now producing more than one million annual visitor arrivals. These are Malaysia, China, Japan, Korea, India and Russia. In 2013, the TAT is confident that if the global, regional and local situation remains stable, this year will see Thailand receive 24.5 million arrivals,

generating a projected tourism income of B1,149 billion. Two source markets, China (2.7 million) and Malaysia (2.5 million) are now generating more than two million annual arrivals each. And two source-markets, Japan (1.3 million) and Korea (1.1 million) are generating more than one million arrivals each. Visitors from East Asia totalled 12,502,194 (+20.84 per cent), Europe 5,617,817 (+10.12 per cent), the Americas 1,080,148 (+13.40 per cent), South Asia 1,289,641 (+11.36 per cent), Oceania 1,046,753 (+12.13 per cent), Middle East 604,659 (+0.58 per cent) and Africa 161,853 (+17.36 per cent).

A date with the Woulfe pack SPONSORED

I

t’s been a year since The Phuket News last visited Brian Woulfe at his contemporary offices in Baan Wana Park and interviewed him about his design business, Designed By Woulfe. His company is currently involved in the refurbishment of The Pavilions resort above Layan Beach, which would explain the multitude of people rushing about with swatches, tiles and delivery packages. This leading luxury hotel is just one of numerous projects Brian’s company is involved with, including redesigning villas as well as the interior design of the new Seduction nightclub in Patong. If all this activity were not enough, Brian’s office also doubles as an art gallery and showroom so no matter where you venture within you’ll be confronted by either a remarkable work of art or a piece of resplendent furniture. “Careful with that table – it cost B2 million,” says Brian. I carefully lift my cup of coffee as a coaster is swiftly ushered beneath. This in many ways en-

Brian’s uncanny ability to sense his clients’ desires has led him to create an enviable client list that continues to burnish his reputation on the island. His entrepreneurial vigour has led him into a totally new area over the last few months – social media. Formed in October, his company Social With Woulfe is expanding by the day. As Brian was keen to tell me,

“Social media is exploding. When the average person online spends four hours on Facebook alone, this can no longer be ignored by businesses.” Social With Woulfe offers a host of services, from assisting new clients set up their social media presence and developing their online strategy, to enabling them to understand and react to the new information created by social media. “When you consider that 90 per cent of the world’s data

was created in the last two years, you begin to understand the wealth of new information companies are able to exploit, the large majority of which was created by social media,” says Brian. The company also offers traditional digital services such as website design and visual identity branding, though it’s more geared towards mobile applications. As Brian revealed, the smartphone is changing the way people consume media, and companies have to be able

to react to this transition to the point where customers are permanently online via their smartphone posting and commenting in real time 24/7. Social With Woulfe also runs a luxury blog reporting on the global fashion and luxury industry and how technology, digital and social media affect these industries. Brian felt that this blog, in both English and Thai, was a natural addition to his company considering Asia’s unquenchable demand for luxury goods and its custom-

ers’ desire to seek out the latest trends. The brother and sister companies, Designed by Woulfe and Social With Woulfe, sit very comfortably beside each, with the offices a hive of activity occurring between draftsmen, programmers and bloggers, and all this within a showroom and art gallery. Who would have imagined such an enterprise was possible in Phuket? If you meet Brian, you’ll know that anything’s possible.

The importance of preparing your will Fabian Doppler fabian.doppler@dfdlmekong.com

F

or many people, estate planning and the preparation of a last will and testament is a dreaded thought and something that is rather avoided. However, it is certainly advisable to settle such affairs and this holds true in particular if you have property in Thailand. If you do not have a will If you do not prepare a will, the law decides how the estate is distributed. Succession in Thailand is governed by Sections 1599 ff. of the Thai Civil and Commercial Code (“CCC”). Rules related to international issues are governed by Sections 37 ff. of the Thai Act on Conflict of Laws. Statutory heirs are entitled to inherit according to the following order (Section 1629 CCC): • Descendants; • Parents; • Brothers and sisters of full blood; • Brothers and sisters of half blood; • G randfathers a nd grandmothers; • Uncles and aunts The surviving spouse is also a statutory heir. His/ her share of the inheritance depends on how many and which type of statutory heirs there are altogether.

Thai inheritance law does not recognise the idea of a statutory share. Any heir can be fully disinherited. If there are no living relatives and no will, the estate devolves to the state.

If the deceased had a Thai spouse or partner who owns common assets in his/her own name, in particular if they have been paid for by the deceased, the spouse or partner also should have a will.

Why a will is recommended It is highly recommended to have a last will and testament naming all your assets, such as property, bank accounts, vehicle, and personal items as well as naming your heirs. If there is no will, the stat utor y heirs have the burden of proof that they are next of kin. They will in practice have to hire a Thai lawyer to represent them during the court probate proceedings in Thailand and perhaps even have to travel to Thailand. This is avoidable by preparing a will. In a will, an administrator of the estate may also be appointed, such as a lawyer in Thailand. Thailand now has enacted laws that govern issues related to the so-called “living will”, which means your instructions as to what to do if you are seriously injured and left in a vegetative state. Such instructions may be included in your last will and testament. Also, funeral arrangements may be set forth in your will.

Formalities of a Thai will In Thailand, the most common type of will is required to be in writing, dated at the time of making the will, and signed by the testator before at least two witnesses of the testator’s signature (Sections 1656 CCC). It does not have to be drafted in Thai language. The body text of the will may be printed or handwritten. In addition to this common type of will, there are certain other types with different formalities, such as a public will, which are less relevant in practice. We strongly recommend preparing a separate Thai will for assets in Thailand in addition to the will in your home country. This is necessary because different jurisdictions usually require different formalities for wills. Furthermore, having a will drafted in the home country to cover assets in Thailand may be problematic and burdensome to the family as documentation may need to be translated, notarised and approved by a government body.

Conflict of law If assets include a house and/or a leasehold right in Thailand, Thai courts will be competent for the probate and Thai law will always govern the succession. If assets include movable property in Thailand, including shares in a Thai company, Thai courts will be competent as well, however according to Thai conflict law the law of the domicile of the deceased at the time of his death will be applied. A Thai will should be prepared and signed on Thai territory, as in this case it is ensured that the aforementioned Thai rules regarding the form of the will apply. Probate in Thailand In order to obtain a probate in Thailand, probate proceedings at the Thai courts will need to be initiated by the heirs. A probate will in most cases be required to administer the estate orderly, even if the deceased has provided for a last will. If the deceased himself named an administrator in his will, the probate court will appoint this person. One of the heirs, but also a third party, such as a lawyer, may act as administrator. Otherwise the court will seek to appoint one of the heirs as administrator of the estate. The administrator will

Pruksa announces ambitious plans for 78 new projects worth B55 bn THE LISTED DEVELOPER Pruksa Real Estate Plc (PS) plans to launch 78 projects worth a combined B55 billion this year while expanding into more areas, notably in Patong. "In Phuket, demand is mainly from those working in tourism business, while demand in Chon Buri is from those working in industrial estates," said chief business officer Prasert Taedullayasatit. With the government's rice pledging scheme boosting incomes in the north and northeast, PS also has its sights set on those regions. In Chiang Mai, the company owns a 40-rai plot for a project yet to be decided. Mr Prasert said housing demand nationwide this year will grow by 10 per cent,

driven by business in the provinces. In Greater Bangkok, the market is expected to grow by 5 per cent. Last year, housing demand in the provinces totalled B300 billion, up from B240 billion in 2011. How could I resist taking a picture of these bemused school girls? We had spent the day fixing up the school’s library, put in a reading area, and then stacked the shelves of the library with several hundred donated books in English and Thai for the benefit of the children. These girls were waiting for the final presentations to finish off what had turned out to be an exhilarating day, and their knowing smiles put a final touch to a very worthwhile project. ost of the so-called “Russian” businesses in Phuket are actually Thai-owned and just use Russian people in the front so they can explain things to Russian customers directly. For example, one of the biggest and most well established travel companies on the island (widely associated with Russian tourists) is actually Turkish-owned. Wherever one sees Cyrillic letters in a shop window you might think this is a Russian business. No way. These are Thai and (yes!) Western businesses who just want to get Russian clients. Frankly, I have no idea about what exactly happened with Alex Tour and what was the immediate cause for the events in question. I want just to share some general “insider’s” thoughts regarding why local residents are against “Russian” businesses. First, it’s all about money. Nobody welcomes competition here. What happened in Karon? “Russian” businesses offered massage for B250 compared to

Comments, Facebook & Twitter Cause and effect [Re. Phuket taxi driver attacks Russian business] Mr Kalip’s comments are amazing. He states that Russian tour companies are cheaper, then complains that the Russian customers think the Thais are expensive. He complains that Russian customers who only speak Russian want to deal in their own language! I run a business in Hong Kong, I have to compete with my competitors using quality service and quality products, not thuggery and intimidation. Mr Kalip, if other companies can charge less for the same service as your taxi “co-operative” then that is the market rate. You either meet the challenge with a better service or you meet the price. If you cannot compete, your business will wither and die. Thuggery and bullying is not the answer. Quality servce is the answer. Happy customers, great feedback for Phuket, ultimately more visitor and more customers so your revenue and income will go up. I used to love Thailand, but sadly not any more. Edward

Let the Thais come to Russia for business and living, like so many Chinese do nowadays (whose culture is quite similar to Thai). Chinese just come, do their business and settle in Siberian part and Far East of Russia. In their millions! What a joke of fate... Pacific Local Thai businesses just can’t compete with the Russians, and they resort to street violence, how sad. Ilya Yankov Russians are everywhere. There is no sense to fight against them. Afterwards we’ll occupy all Thailand and you’ll work for us. Anton Stop the presses! Russians seeking out Russian-speaking restaurants and services? What’s next? Are they going to try and find the lowest price available?

That sounds like a free market to me, and lord knows just how unhealthy a free market can be. It might lead to competition amongst businesses, resulting in better products and services. We can’t have that now, can we? Somchai needs a new pair of sub woofers for his synchronised lighting and sound system in the tuk-tuk. Eric Haeg

Protesting the truth? [Re. Anti-Russian protest in Phuket’s Bang Tao area] Just imagine if white people did this. This would be news on CNN and the world over and whites would be tagged as racists “hurting the sentiments of minority” shop owners. By the way I’m Asian and I believe Russians, Americans, and Europeans have as many rights as we Asians do when we go to their country and ply taxis, open up business and become lawyers, engineers, and doctors.

We are even allowed to open strip clubs in Western countries! I hope all farangs in Thailand unite and not divide themselves among Russian- and Englishspeaking ones. It’s the Russians today, tomorrow it could be Englishspeaking business owners. Lavista4u If Alex Tour is legal, they should be able to sue those who took the law into their own hands for damages. I get really tired of this ‘mob rule’ mentality here. It seems like whenever something happens that some locals don’t like, they form a mob and the police almost always cower to them. This is not the way to move society forward. If Alex Tour is illegal, the locals should have gone through legal means. If they are illegal, they should, by all means, be shut down. However, it should be done by the authorities. How many illegal Thai operators are there? Dave Williams

B300 all around. Guess what was the customers’ decision when the quality of the services was the same? Second, why is the focus just on Russians? I believe this is mostly about the Russianlanguage. Russians are distinctively visible when compared to Phuket’s other 85 per cent of foreigners who mostly speak English. Could you fight with all foreign businesses here? No way. So who is the easy prey? That’s right, those who are different and newcomers here – Russians. Third, are Russian businesses so numerous? Not at all. They represent just a small proportion of all foreign businesses in Phuket. As mentioned above, they are just more visible. Fourth, are Russians so dangerous? Yes, they are – but in a business sense. Generally Russian businessmen are better educated and have better international exposure – it’s also easier to do business here for Russians than for most Westerners. Sergey Nesterenko

O

ver 40 years ago I had the pleasure of walking the nearly virgin beaches of Kata and Kata Noi. On the beautiful white sand there was nothing but young hippies and objects washed up by the monsoon waves. Beach combing was my favourite pastime. Pieces of brightly coloured wood fascinated me the most. Reds, blues, greens, yellows, oranges, even blacks and whites, bleached by the sun, washed by the sea, were scattered everywhere by the waves. Some were works of art in themselves. Others I gathered and turned into sculptural creations. Only two months ago I found three large red/orange pieces that I have combined into a new creation for you to see. Of course I realised years ago that these beautiful pieces of wood were the remains of former fishing boats that had gone through the process of ageing, which I like to refer to as dissolution. As I mention, on those virgin beaches were also hippies – young and beautiful people in their early twenties doing nothing but enjoying life. In most cases they wore practically nothing while swimming, sunning, dancing and

so on. As an artist I enjoyed looking at them. I was inspired to create many sculptures celebrating their beauty and lifestyle. I also became acquainted with many. Many continued to come back to Phuket for years, including some that had inspired my sculptures. I began to observe that with time their tight bodies were beginning to show their age The parts that had fitted so perfectly together in their twenties were changing shape; expanding and contracting – even falling apart, just like the colourful pieces of fishing boats for which I combed the beaches. With this revelation, I began to look at human bodies as being composed of hundreds of pieces that had begun at conception and gradually come together in the early twenties as the bodies of my young hippies. And just as those boats had gradually broken apart and washed up on the beach for me to collect, their body pieces also began to separate almost as soon as they came together. It began as a mere hint, but eventually, no matter how hard we try to prevent it, it becomes full dissolution. These hanging sculptures were exhibited in my “Bodies on the Beach” show a year ago. Those tight bodied now return in various states of dissolution, from the first hint to the final stage. I find beauty even in dissolution.

Love and life at Art Fair

A

lmost two years ago today a small seed of an idea was planted at the end of Soi Naya 2 in Rawai – to create the Phuket Art Village. Odd constructions with unconventional designs soon randomly popped up like mushrooms in a field. Now this eclectic village is home to the Red Gallery, The Jerm Space, P. Fire Gallery, Ta-Lung Studio, The Love Art Studio and Tawan-ook Art Gallery, with the Phu-La Art Studio currently under construction. The Phuket Art Village has now become one of those places that locals proudly show off to friends and family, a curious treasure away from the well beaten tourist tracks, a little known gem that rounds out our community with arts, music and odd arty types. It is a place chock-full of original art by Thai artists, showcasing a large range of styles, from traditional Thai to contemporary and quirky sculptures and paintings, small drawings and large murals.

The artists open their doors and their lives to the community, welcoming everyone to not just come and view but to join in, participate and be part of the art. On the first Saturday of each month the Phuket Art Village hosts the Phket Art Village Party – a celebration of arts and music for the community to enjoy. The next event is on February 2, with a pre-Valentine’s Day party celebrating love – for friends, family, the community and the world! Starting at about 5pm, it includes an exciting programme filled with arts and music activities for kids, performances and live music, Thai and foreign food and drinks and more. Enjoy an evening with the artists, friends and family in the relaxed and unique atmosphere that is the Phuket Art Village. Mum’s the word Jody Houton meets mother of two active boys and 12-year Phuket resident Donna de Bruin, whose new website helps families find fun things to do Jody Houton editor3@thephuketnews.com

When I first came to Phuket there were not many activities on Phuket or indeed so many expatriate children. Tesco Lotus (well half of it) had been built. The beaches were still great but there were not many clubs, sporting activities and generally things to do on Phuket for children. Even buying necessities for children such as car seats and safety railings was near impossible

1

The ‘Phuket for Kids’ website is a great idea. How did it come about? When my son was born 11 years ago, I was looking for things to do with him. I began a baby group to get to know new mums and we began to share ideas. As more new mothers joined I shared my growing knowledge about Phuket with them. In my role as a teacher we also plan class trips to relate to topics and I did struggle to find similar venues that I was used to at home such as concert halls, museums, marine parks and so on. However, I began talking to a lot of Thai people on the island and realised if I thought creatively and ventured off the tourist trail that there were lots of great venues and things to do.

2

Tell us a little bit about the website. How does it work? We have tried very hard to make the website as user-friendly as possible. There are ten sections with amusements, sports, festivals, kid’s bites and many more. There is also an option to search for a particular venue or activity and find it that way. The site has an extensive photo gallery so you can see what many of the activities look like. There is also an events calendar. This I am very excited about. This is an opportunity for businesses, charities; anyone offering a service or activity for kids, to promote their events. Now there is one calendar to look up children’s events, sporting activities or anything that specifically relates to children. There will also be a regular news update section to see what specific activities or events are happening at any time of year.

3

You have been here for 12 years. Did you raise your children here? Yes my first son (Finn) was born here in Phuket 11 years ago and has lived on Phuket all his life. He goes to an international school. My second son was adopted in Thailand and has been living with us in Phuket since he was 18 months old. My children love Phuket and often when away visiting family or on holidays they ask when they are coming home.

4

Phuket for Kids is a new website aimed at providing families in Phuket with ideas of what to do for activities, games and fun to keep the little ones and not the so-little ones amused. Visit: phuketforkids.com

Are there more opportunities for children’s activities nowadays? When I first came to Phuket there were not many activities on Phuket or indeed so many expatriate children. Tesco Lotus (well half of it) had been built. The beaches were still great but there were not many clubs, sporting activities and generally things to do on Phuket for children. Even buying necessities for children such as car seats and safety railings was near impossible. The number of international schools now on Phuket illustrates the growth in the number of families moving here. Phuket is also seen much more as a holiday destination for families. There are now lots of activities and organisations specifically catering to children: holiday activities, theme parks, cooking classes, sports activities and much more.

5

Is Phuket a good place to raise children? Absolutely. There are lots of great schools and lots of activities, football clubs, dance groups and swimming clubs both foreign and locally run. Whilst typical distractions such as television and computer games are global, I feel that children living in Phuket tend to be more physical and adventurous. This is shown by the increase in numbers trying

Above: Australians Donna and Andrew de Bruin and their two children 11-year-old Finn and 3-year-old Songkran. trapeze, surfing, triathlons and ziplining. I also have found that many children living here are very inclusive, meaning that they are able to make friends quickly and generally allow others into their groups. I suppose that comes from being third culture children and living in an international environment.

6

What are the best things to do in Phuket for kids? Well you will have to check out the website for the answer to that! But for me personally I still find a late afternoon swim at a quiet beach and dinner at a local restaurant one of my favourite activities. Dad can have a beer; mum even a foot massage and the children can busily dig in the sand or play with a Frisbee.

7

Do you have activities aimed at all age groups? My eldest son is 11 years old and he is extremely adventurous so we are always on the lookout to keep both age groups happy, but I won’t let him try base jumping yet! Phuket has always had bungee jumping and go-kart racing but there are a lot of activities that do cater for the older thrill seeker such as ziplining, zorbing, surfing and more. I feel this is a resource that toddlers, children, teenagers, mums, grandparents, resorts and anyone can find something fun to do.

8

You also have a book out, how much is that? We have a downloadable PDF version which is sold for B250. We are trying to keep costs low

and ensure people can access this information anytime, especially if you are not connected to wi-fi. This especially suits the holiday maker as they may only have internet connection in their hotel but want to be able to read Phuket For Kids wherever they are. The downloadable version is updated simultaneously with the website.

9

What are the most frequentlyasked questions?

The common question I receive is: ‘Where can I get a copy of your book?’ Now we have the website and downloadable version of Phuket for Kids it is easy for anyone to access this book at anytime at phuket forkids.com

10

What’s the one piece of advice you would give to young families in Phuket? On Phuket and indeed in Southeast Asia, some standards expected in your home country may not be the same as those in Thailand. Don’t compromise your safety standards and gut instincts even if people tell you an activity is okay. If your gut feeling tells you the activity is unsafe I would follow your parental instinct. In saying that, leave some room for adventure. There are a lot of activities unique to Phuket and Thailand that are very safe and are lots of fun! In short always ensure your children are safely buckled up when travelling, always insist on your child having a life jacket when boating and remember that many beaches are not patrolled so do take care.

Justin Pitt, Executive Assistant Manager of Anantara Phuket Villas, presents a youngster with a Roy E. Heinecke Foundation scholarship.

ifty ‘exceptional’ students from four schools around the Mai Khao area received their Roy E. Heinecke Foundation scholarships at The Anantara Phuket Villas on January 18. The Minor International scholarships are given every year to needy students who have an outstanding track record. This year included students from Baan Mai Khao School, Tha Chat Chai School, Baan Kor Ann School, and Hong Yok Bamrung. This is the third year that Anantara Phuket Villas has hosted these scholarships keeping in line with the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility philosophy. The Roy E. Scholarship foundation is an educational fund established in 1994 in memory of Roy E. Heinecke, the father of Mr. William E. Heinecke, CEO of Minor Group. The scholarship is financially supported by the Heinecke family. Each year the foundation gives scholarships to 50 students, which help support their education from early learning stages to graduation. The late Roy E. Heinecke spent many years serving the U.S. Embassy in the Asia-Pacific region. Being exposed to different cultures and the ways of living in these countries inspired him to give deserving youngsters more advantages through education. The Heinecke family established this scholarship fund to fulfil this worthy wish.

The highly competitive and prestigious English writing award is open to all Thai passport holders. Students compete first regionally and then nationally. This year the theme given was ‘My Biggest Decision’. Many BIS Phuket students spent their summer holiday composing their essays. Taarika submitted a poignant and highly personal piece that explored the ramifications of one very crucial decision made in the heat of a moment. The 14-year-old will compete against other regional winners for a B50,000 cash prize and the title on February 1, in Bangkok.

Every month, the best pet wins a B500 voucher from:

These two beautiful cats live with Marissa Grimes, who had this to say about them: “Both of them are Persian cats. The black one is Jaybee (short for Jet Black), Jaybee is six months old, and the other one is Benson, who is seven months old. Their favourite food is Royal Canin for Persians, I give them cats’ supplements too in the shapes of fish (which they love), and cat treats when they’re very good. They love to play with toy balls and a fishing rod with a toy mouse at the end which they chase, but their most favourite exercise is a laser pointer light. They go absolutely crazy chasing the red light, and it’s also good exercise too.”

Gays who come out are less stressed: Canadian study

G

ays and lesbians who come out about their sexual orientation are less stressed than those who remain in the closet, and often more relaxed than heterosexuals, according to a study released on January 29. Researchers at Louis H. Lafontaine Hospital, affiliated with the University of Montreal, tested the levels of cortisol – a stress hormone – and other indicators of strain in homosexuals, bisexuals and heterosexuals. “Contrary to our expectations, gay and bisexual men had lower depressive symptoms and allostatic load levels (a measure of body stress) than heterosexual men,” lead author Robert-Paul Juster said. “Lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals who were out to family and friends had lower levels of psychiatric symptoms and lower morning cortisol levels than those who were still in the closet,” he added. The researchers tested 87 men and women,

all around age 25, administering psychological questionnaires and taking blood, saliva and urine samples to measure stress. The findings, published in Psychosomatic Medicine, could lend support to gay rights advocates. The mostly Frenchspeaking province of Quebec has long been a haven for French homosexuals, who say they face intolerance in their native country, which is now locked in a heated debate over legalising gay marriage and adoption. “As the participants of t h i s s t udy enjoy progressive Canadian r ights, they may be inherently healthier, healthier and hardier,” Juster said. “Coming out is no longer seen as a matter of popular debate but a matter of public health. Internationally, societies must endeavour to facilitate this self-acceptance by promoting tolerance, progressing policy, and dispelling stigma for all minorities.” AFP

Thai slimming coffee health warning made

C

halard Sue (Smart Buyer) magazine is advising consumers to be careful when buying coffee-based slimming drinks as some contain a substance that can raise the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The magazine’s advice comes after a news report from Germany that coffee slimming drinks from Thailand had tested positive for sibutramine, a restricted weight loss substance. German authorities recently alerted Thai commerce officials that they had detected the banned substance in nine packages of coffee-based slimming products sent from Thailand between September and December last year. According to the magazine, sibutramine is a restricted appetite suppressant used to treat obesity. It was eventually banned by the Food and Drug Administration after it was widely used in weight-loss products including slimming coffee drinks. FDA deputy secretary-general Srin-

HEALTH 5 IN BRIEF Thousands protest over hospital cuts

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of London yesterday to protest against the government’s planned cuts to the city’s Lewisham Hospital. Plans include the closure of the A&E department and downgrading of the maternity ward. The closures are part of an overhaul proposed after the nearby South London Healthcare NHS Trust went into administration as a result of it losing around £1.3m (B61m) a week.

A third more men die from cancer than women

ual Kornkotchakorn on Monday said the nine coffee products which tested positive for the banned substance in Germany were not made in Thailand. She said they were believed to have been smuggled into Thailand before being exported to Europe. Bangkok Post

Startling figures released this week show that men are a third more likely to die from cancer-related illnesses compared to women in the U.K. In 2010, 202 men out of 100,000 died compared to 147 women out of 100,000. Smoking, being overweight, drinking alcohol and poor diet are the most important cancer risk factors for men.

Finding the right direction

Throughout four stakeholder meetings in 2012, SEEK developed ‘Phuket Compass Sustainability Indicators’ using a Compass Model of Sustainability THAI EYE

Kanokwan Homcha-aim kanokwan@myseek.org

Ecosystems’ services are something that we all need, but take for granted, as we never really ‘cost-account’ for them i.e. we expect clean water, clean air, nutrient cycling, functioning of the water cycle, shade, beauty and place for outdoor recreation, but we behave as if these services are free. Thus, as they are ‘free’ we abuse them. However, we cannot enjoy a healthy and good quality of life, or even prosperous business without these services

Are Thais and foreigners on the same page with regards to Phuket’s green issues? SEEK Coordinator Kanokwan Homcha-aim takes a look at the island’s environmental challenges.

F

sity, coral coverage (extent), fish diversity (at the coral area), bleaching, sedimentation.

or the coming year, SEEK will be gathering information and trying to complete a Phuket Sustainability Report. This will then be used as a guideline for further planning, actions and initiatives to help develop a more sustainable Phuket. Throughout four stakeholder meetings in 2012, SEEK developed ‘Phuket Compass Sustainability Indicators’ using AtKisson’s Compass Model of Sustainability. An ‘Indicator’ is a form of measurement to asses the state or progress of a particular environmental element. This compass model consists of four points: North-Nature, East-Economic, South-Society, and West-Wellbeing. Here, I would like to present North-Nature, for which the seven priority areas are:

Area 5: Forest Coverage Aspect: Forest Management Without forest Phuket would lose a lot of its allure as a “premier tourism and property investment destination”. The ‘green’ of Phuket’s mountains and coast are one of the most valuable marketing tools, alongside its beaches and blue water. The forest also provides invaluable and irreplaceable ecosystem services such as regulation of climate, water provision, flood prevention, scenic beauty, habitat for species, etc. Can you imagine a ‘Sustainable Phuket’ with little to no forests? Proposed Indicators: Forest Cover Change (i.e. percentage change in area under forest cover).

Area 1: Coastal Environment Quality Aspect: Coastal Management Phuket’s economy is primarily based on tourism, and almost all tourists come to Phuket for its white sand beaches and clean, aqua warm blue waters. Both of these variables are directly influenced by Coastal Management (which ranges from coastal development planning, pollution and construction law enforcement, business licensing and density of vendors, litter management, etc). If this variable continues to deteriorate then Phuket loses its status as a world class island/beach tourist destination, especially now with the development of Cambodia’s coastal areas, and the opening of Myanmar, both of which will provide competition for Phuket in the future. Phuket’s reputation is built here. Proposed Indicators: 1) Marine Water Quality Index and 2) Beach Quality Index.

Area 2: Ecosystem Services Aspect: Protected Area Management

Ecosystems’ services are something that we all need, but take for granted, as we never really ‘cost-account’ for them i.e. we expect clean water, clean air, nutrient cycling, functioning of the water cycle, shade, beauty and place for outdoor recreation, but we behave as if these services are free. Thus, as they are ‘free’ we abuse them. However, we cannot enjoy a healthy and good quality of life, or even prosperous business without these services. But nowadays, they are primarily delivered from protected areas like national parks, watershed protection areas, conservation forests, etc. Thus, it is imperative that Phuket protects against any encroachment on the protected areas that are already established there, as it is almost impossible to restore them once they are destroyed. Proposed Indicators: Extent of encroachment (measured in rai & hectares) of national park and other protected areas.

Area 3: Solid Waste / Garbage Aspect: Solid Waste Management

Garbage, or litter, is the most visible indicator of a deteriorating environment and also represents the level of environmental

Area 6: Climate Change Aspect: Carbon Emissions

Tourists might stop coming to visit Phuket’s natural attractions if the waters are polluted. awareness, values and behaviours of the people that live there. It is also a problem that plagues almost all areas of the island and takes away from the lustre and world class status of Phuket in many people’s eyes. When it is washed up and litters beaches then it affects tourists’ perceptions of the status of Phuket and the quality of their holiday experience. Also, Phuket has to burn much of its garbage, which adds to both air pollution and carbon emissions, and sending it off the island to landfills in other provinces is costly and potentially creates conflict with other communities where the landfill is situated. Much of the garbage is organic also (i.e. food waste) which links to other issues of unsustainability. Proposed Indicators: 1) Total amount of waste generated (tons) and per capita on the island and 2) Total amount of waste recycled (divided into types of recyclables).

Area 4: Marine Environment Aspect: Coral Reef Health Again, Phuket’s reputation as a world class tourist destination relies to a great extent on the health of its marine environment and ecosystem. Can you imagine the effect on tourism if all the coral were to disappear? What effect would this have on tour operators? A dramatic reduction in snorkelling and diving trips for a start. How about the overall marine food chain and its cascading effect on fisheries? This is a very important nature sustainability indicator for Phuket. Proposed Indicators: 1) Healthy Coral Index which can consist of an aggregated measurement of, for example, coral diver-

Climate change is the world’s number one sustainability challenge, and its impact will significantly affect an island community like Phuket more and more in the future. Right now, maybe there isn’t much effect being seen or experienced right now, but this will likely change sooner rather than later, especially in a systemic way, as ocean temperature will rise as well as the sea level, which will greatly affect the beaches, the coral reefs, and thus tourism. Also, more extreme weather events like rain storms and typhoons may cause significant damage to the island’s infrastructure and also cause loss of life. But at the same time, this can be easily tackled first by energy efficiency measures, behaviour change with electricity use and transportation choices by individuals, businesses and government. Proposed Indicators: Total Carbon Emissions (measuring carbon emission equivalent from electricity consumption, transportation, waste incineration).

Area 7: Ecosystem Health Aspect: Biodiversity Imagine Phuket with no birds, monkeys, frogs, lizards, or fish surrounding the coral reefs? Biodiversity is crucial to life on Phuket and to its tourism industry. Tourists who come for diving and snorkelling do not come to see an empty sea, and the same can be said for the forest areas of the island that are also tourist sites. Food security and its implications to a large segment of the local economy is another reason that this area/aspect is so important for the Nature Compass Point for Phuket’s sustainability. Proposed Indicators: Living Planet Index (aggregate measure of vertebrate species populations in three categories: 1) Terrestrial, 2) Marine, and 3) Freshwater and includes fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

THE BIG LIST

The Big List: Strange endangered animals New Zealand’s kiwis (the birds, not people) are on the endangered animals list – and maybe New Zealand’s cats will join them there, if one campaigner has his way (see story at right.) Today’s best known endangered animal is probably the panda, but here are some of the stranger animals now facing extinction.

The Solenodon: a small mammal found only on the Caribbean islands of Cuba and Hispaniola, the solenodon looks cute enough: a bit like like a blond racoon. But it can inject venom through its teeth – the only mammal known to do so – and is easily annoyed, so it’s best left alone. Scientist thought the solenodon was extinct, but a few were found alive in 2003. (Photo: Frank Wouters) The Kakapo: New Zealand’s strangest bird may be the kakapo. It’s the largest parrot in the world – adult males can weigh about 4 kg – and also the only flightless one. Kakapos are rarely seen, because they only come out at night for a run around the bush, making a distinctive booming call to attract other kakapos. Unfortunately there are only about 60 left to attract. T he A ngler Fish: this might just be the ugliest thing in the sea, but the females hold a fatal attraction for the males. Male angler fish are about a twentieth of the size of females, and during mating they burrow into the body of the female, and feed on her blood. Eventually the male loses his eyes, teeth and other organs, until only a deposit of sperm remains. Interestingly, Angler fish also make excellent sushi. The Bumblebee Bat: The world’s smallest mammal, less than 3 cm long and weighing about as much as a penny, it can perch on a human fingertip. Bumblebee bats can dart and hover in flight like hummingbirds, and are found only in a few limestone caves in Thailand and Myanmar. Researchers think there are now fewer than 200 bats left, making it one of the world’s most endangered animals. The Dugong: another endangered animal found in Thailand, the dugong, a close cousin of the manatee, also known as the sea cow. Both dugongs and manatees are related to elephants. The dugong has a whale-like tail that it can use to prop its head out of shallow water, and it’s thought dugong sightings gave rise to ancient mariner’s tales of mermaids. Dugongs can live up to seventy years of age, but breed slowly – females have only one calf a year. (Photo: Julien Willem)

Scientist seeks mother for his ‘cave-man’ baby

A

researcher at Havard Medical School in the United States says an “adventurous female” is needed to serve as the surrogate mother for the first Neanderthal baby to be born in 30,000 years. Geneticist George Church told Speigel Online that he is working on technology that will make it possible to clone a cave-man from ancient samples of DNA. His plan is to alter modern human egg cells with DNA from the Neanderthal species, a brutish relative of modern humans that lived between 500,000 and 30,000 years ago. The next step would be to “find an adventurous female human” to act as the surrogate mother to the cloned cave-man baby. Professor Church also suggested cloning a group of the babies, resulting in “a kind of Neanderthal culture.” Although “clones” are a fixture

of popular fiction, scientists have had only limited successes in cloning animals, and there have been no known attempts to clone humans. Some researchers have claimed they will soon be able to use ancient DNA to resurrect extinct species like mammoths or dinosaurs, in the manner of the “Jurassic Park” movies. But the claims are far-fetched. No clones have yet been produced

from ancient DNA samples, which are too badly deteriorated to provide a genetic blueprint for the lost species. Even cloning modern animals is difficult – many suffer from birth defects, and die young. In 2003, Spanish researchers cloned a bucardo – a recently extinct subspecies of ibex – from a skin sample frozen just four years earlier. But the newborn died immediately from respiratory failure.

Fur flies over call to exterminate Kiwi cats

A

New Zealand campaigner has infuriated cat lovers with a call to eradicate their pets, to stop them killing endangered native birds. Gareth Morgan, a businessman turned philanthropist, wants Kiwis to give puss the boot, citing research showing the cat kills an average of 13 native animals a year. Morgan said that figure was unacceptable in a country where many native bird species had been wiped out, and 37

he Chinese military is developing a robotic car that will let drivers fall asleep at the wheel. The Fierce Lion 3 is controlled by a computer that can track nearby traffic with radar, video cameras and satellite navigation, enabling it to overtake and make other manoeuvres safely. The car, which looks much like a standard sports utility vehicle, completed a 114 kilometre test drive in 85 minutes, reaching speeds of 105 kph, according to the PLA Daily, the official newspaper of the People’s Liberation Army. The vehicle overtook slower-moving traffic 33 times, and on one occasion it refrained from overtak-

ing because it would be dangerous. Western firms such as Google are also researching driverless cars. The PL A newspaper wrote: “the vehicle can effectively reduce driver fatigue when used for civilian purposes. When the driver is tired, it can enter the unmanned state to allow him to sleep in peace.”

per cent of those that remained were endangered. “I’m not suggesting you go out and knock your furry friend on the head right now,” he wrote in a newspaper column. “But if we are serious about conservation, then we must acknowledge that we are harbouring a natural born killer.” A 2011 survey showed almost half of New Zealand households own a cat, one of the highest rates in the world. How a Phuket coffee roaster is going from local secret to island-wide favourite

N

o-one knows much about Tan Cheng Long. Fleeing the civil war in his homeland, he stepped off a boat from China in the early 1950s armed with only the clothes on his back, and the knowledge of how to roast coffee – really, really good coffee. In 1958 he rented a small one-storey shop house from temple land belonging to the Jui Tui shrine, in the heart of what is now known as Phuket Old Town, and put up a sign that read ‘Hock Hoe Lee’, meaning “Lucky”. From this humble wooden building, he began to roast Brazilian coffee beans imported via Penang. Soon, hordes of Chinese tin miners were beating a path to the shop on Ranong Road. While hailing from a nation that revered tea as their national drink, coffee gave the labourers – most of whom worked long hours for little pay in terrible conditions – the buzz they needed to keep going. Before PASSING THE TORCH Above: Somboon and too long, Cheng Long (who Ampha Tanpatcharalater on would take on a pisuit; right, Ruengrit Thai surname, TanpachaPetchvorakul and Jutarapisuit) was the king of mas Tanpatcharapisuit. Phuket coffee, his roasted beans – which he made every day to ensure quality – supplying restaurants and streetside vendors across the island. The sacks bore the simple yet proud stamp “A1” (there are actually three ‘A1’: the best, good and normal). Business was good enough for him to enrol his eldest son, Somboon, in school in Penang (historically, Phuket’s Chinese population would send their children to the then-colony for a British-style education, as well as to learn Hokkien and English). When Somboon returned from Malaya, now a man, he joined his father in the hot, humid interior of the coffee roasting shop. Over time, he learned the intricate techniques and skills that would allow him to follow in the master’s footsteps. Like any son, however, he also had new ideas. One was to roast Thai coffee beans rather than the imports that his father had mostly used up until that point. The other was to rethink the traditional cha yen, or Thai iced tea, by instead using Ceylon tea leaves. Grown in the island nation now called Sri Lanka, Ceylon black tea is famed for its golden colour and intense flavour. It proved to be a master stroke, and in the 1980s made Hock Hoe Lee famous for tea as well as coffee. However, while pleased with the success of his tea experiment, Somboon remained dedicated to roast-

ing coffee beans, in the same ways his father, Cheng Long, had taught him. It would be left to his daughter and son-in-law to chart the next step. Ruengrit “Oh” Petchvorakul is from a good Bangkok family, with a house on New Petchaburi Road, not far from Bangkok Hospital. Like many Thais of his generation, he was sent overseas for his final years of university, in his case studying electrical engineering at the University of Southern California in the city of Los Angeles. While living in the States. he had the realisation that he could never be happy in the corporate environment that lay ahead. “It was not the life I was waiting for.” It couldn’t have been a more opportune time to meet Somboon’s eldest daughter, Jutamas “Jaea” Tanpacharapisuit, who was studying on the same course in L.A. As they came to know each other, fall in love, and eventually marry, Oh came to learn about her family's historic business, roasting coffee to perfection on the southern Thai island of Phuket, a place about which he admits he knew very little at the time. “I'd never heard of Phuket before, I didn't even know where it was.” He remembers meeting his future father-in-law, recalling that that his first impressions of Somboon were of a man that was, “Old school in traditions, didn’t think much of people from the big city, but was obsessed by coffee,” says Oh. “He can easily tell what kind of bean people will like. If it's old, if it's new, if it's properly processed. He knows how to play with the heat and fire when he roasts the beans. “He will deliver coffee to any shop in Phuket, but when he comes back he will often complain that the retailer isn't using his roasted beans properly.” However, using his international experience – after his studies he had spent a year travelling across the U.S. – Oh knew change must come, “We had to open a cafe, otherwise no-one would ever have the chance to taste our coffee.”Everything had to be created from scratch, from the logo – the sign on the original shop in the Old Town simply reads Hock Hoe Lee, in Thai, Chinese and English scripts – to the

colours and the packaging. Inspiration came from the muted designs and neutral palettes of coffee shops in the American cities of New York and Seattle, though noticeably not the latter city’s most famous export. In its first year of operation the Hock Hoe Lee cafe has built up a strong, loyal following of coffee aficionados (patron Jana McGeachy declares it “The best coffee in Phuket”, while the TripAdvisor ratings average 'Excellent'). With an admirable pursuit of excellence that his father-in-law must surely be proud of, Oh says that, “If I cannot do it well, I won't do it at all.” So what exactly does his coffee-obsessed father-inlaw think about the endeavour? After some thought, Oh says “It’s like a whole new world to him.” On the whole though, it seems Somboon is content to let the next generation find a new future for Hock Hoe Lee. Being rich or famous doesn’t concern him – what drives the older man on is the determination to produce the best roasted coffee in Phuket. After all, apart from his son-in-law and eldest daughter, no-one else alive knows the secret roasting processes that were passed down to him by his father – the poor Chinaman who arrived with nothing but knowledge and a handful of beans. Myanmar emerges from myopia Graham Doven editor@thephuketnews.com

In fact, Ne Win was superstitious to the point of insanity. He would cross bridges backwards because he believed it would ward off evil. I

’m not that fond of immigration at airports. It doesn’t matter where you are; in most countries there is little in the way of welcoming smiles or words for the weary traveller. It’s all the same, Australia, Thailand, US, UK – a total lack of enthusiasm for your arrival in their country. Considering the history of many countries, its not surprising one expected the immigration authorities of Myanmar, formerly Burma, to regard arriving visitors with suspicion. What was surprising was the pleasant smartly dressed young ladies sitting behind the desks. “Good morning, welcome to Myanmar, did you have a pleasant flight?” “Thank you”, I replied. “Ah, you also have cameras here like Bangkok... what do you use them for? “I’m looking for a handsome man” she says. A sense of humour as well. How things have changed in a few short months. The central business district of Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, has newly surfaced roads, modern hotels, shops and restaurants. The house of famous activist and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is on a busy fast moving modern road. There’s nowhere to now sit on the ground outside hoping to catch a glimpse of her. However, venturing two kilometres outside the central area and you go back 50 years. The roads are horrendous, and the traffic, including motorbikes, is everywhere (motorbikes are not allowed in the central area, only bicycles and cars). One travel guide said that Burmese drive at a “leisurely pace in an organised manner.” I have never read such tripe. Apart from belting along in their old four wheel drives and other vehicles, the only vehicles that drive at a leisurely pace are the old rotary engine trucks and buses, such as you still see in the northeast of Thailand. They can’t do anything else but ‘leisurely’. They also drive on the right hand side of the road. There’s nothing unusual about this, many countries drive on the right side of the road, but what is unusual is that the majority of vehicles are meant to be driven on the left. The steering wheel is on the right. One night, the paranoid former dictator, General Ne Win, ordered all Burmese to change from driving on the left to right – immediately. So the Burmese woke up the next morning and drove on the other side of the road. Ne Win, who had seized power in a coup in 1962, was xenophobic, capricious, superstitious and fascinated by the occult ‘science’ of numerology. In fact, Ne Win was superstitious to the point of insanity. He would cross bridges backwards because he believed it would ward off evil. He consulted soothsayers on almost every aspect of his decision making – and they were crazier than he was. As Ne Win was concerned that his regime was leaning too far left, soothsayers told him to change the entire country’s roadways from left-lane driving to right. “To counter the leftness” they said. Most of the roads in Myanmar are pretty dilapidated. You don’t want to have a bad back.

Apart from the city centre roads there is one other, a super eight lane highway stretching 200 km from Yangon to the new capital, Naypyidaw. There’s a lot of construction happening in Naypyidaw. Huge hotels are everywhere, a gemstone stock exchange trading centre, new shopping centres, theme parks and many condominium and housing estates. At the moment there are no people there, or hardly any, but they tell me there will be lots of people there soon. One of the plans to get lots of people

there is moving all the embassies from Yangon to Naypyidaw. Also the colleges and universities. It reminded me of Canberra, the national capital of my home country, Australia, another city built in the middle of nowhere. All neat and tidy, well organised and boring. Yangon is okay though, the famous Strand Hotel has a happy hour in the cocktail bar on Fridays. I actually went to Myanmar to look at the industrial estates and shipping areas, but that’s another story.

The big winner was Take-Two Interactive, which acquired the rights to THQ’s lucrative WWE gaming franchise. The company has already launched the store in Europe, which is similar to the online retailer on their PSN network available through the PlayStation 3. The new online store makes all content available through any PC via a PlayStation account.

Logitech cans gaming gear Logitech has announced it will stop making “nonstategic” gaming products, including joysticks, gamepads, wheels, chairs, and other accessories. The company posted a US$195 million (B5.8 billion) net loss last year, down 14 per cent from the year before. A company representative said that the company would still sell headsets, keyboards, and computer accessories.

A

tari, the pioneers of the video game industry that originated with their classic game Pong, have filed for bankruptcy and will soon be liquidated. The news is a shock to many, mostly because gamers around the world thought the the company had died long ago. Atari has gone through several incarnations over the years – as Atari Inc, then Atari Corp, then Atari Games, followed by Atari Interactive, now Atari, SA - and the company has been sold off many times. But before Nintendo’s little plumber, Atari was the big dog of the video-game world. Let’s take a peek at some of the company’s notable games: Pong: the simplest, most addictive game ever. A 2D two-player table tennis game, Pong holds the honour of being the first video game, sports game, multiplayer game, and arcade game. A 1975 home version, Home Pong, was the first video-game console. Space Invaders: released in 1978 in Japan, Space Invaders (above) was the earliest shooter game. Users controlled a cannon that moved side-toside to shoot the invading aliens. The game was released in 1980 on the Atari

2600, the company’s most successful console, and it was the first game to sell over 1 million copies. Asteroids: the object of Asteroids was for the user to shoot and destory asteroids and UFO’s without colliding with the flying space rocks. The arcade version was released in 1979 and the Atari 2600 version sold 3.5 million copies. In 2009, Universal Studios bought the rights to the adapt the game into a film. Pitfall: also released in 1982 for the Atari 2600, this was a masterpiece of gameplay and the first game in the platformer genre that would later include Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and others. As Pitfall Harry, gamers could jump over scorpions, leap across ponds, and swing over crocodiles. It is considered one of the most innovative games ever made for the Atari 2600. Frogger: released in an arcade version in 1981, the Atari 2600 version of Frogger (left) was highly popular. It was one of game developer Konami’s first titles and feautred a frog trying to cross traffic to hop into a river on the other side. Because Konami released several versions of the game for the Atari 2600, none have sold more than 500,000 copies.

Anonymous hacks ‘Asteroids’ onto website

T

he hacker group Anonymous hacked into the US Sentencing Commission website last weekend and converted it into a version of the video game Asteroids. The website, ussc.gov, was implicated in what Anonymous calls ‘Operation Last Resort’, and the group distributed a keycode on Twitter so users could take play the game.

The hacktivists took over the website on Friday, January 25, in honour of hacker Aaron Swartz, who committed suicide this month as he faced trial for accessing paywalled academic journals. The group wants reform of the US justice system, and say they’ve ripped sensitive information from the USSC website that they will make public if their demands are are not met.

o you remember Crazy Taxi? It wa s one of the most memorable games for the Sega Dreamcast console when it was released in 2000. Although it was also a h igh ly suc c essf u l (and fun) arcade game, originally released in 1999, the home version of Crazy Taxi was just as good. Though the success of the game was not enough to save the Sega Dreamacst, Crazy Taxi did go on to to have four sequels including one for the Game Boy Advance. The premise of the game was for the user, as a cabby, to pick up customers and take them to their destination on time. The quicker the ride, the more money earned. Along the way, the gamer could pick up money by performing stunts and pass obstacles. But be careful: too many stunts can spook your customer and make them walk out. There was little to no depth in the game, but that was what made it a good time. Each new customer was basically a new game and users could experiment with stunts several times over. It was a simple but entertaining game that was for the whole family. The game’s soundtrack, which featured the Offsrping and Bad Religion, was also what made Crazy Taxi stand out. Sadly, the demise of the Dreamcast (a console that was a little ahead of its time) could not save the game and was later sold to PlayStation. Today, the game is available on all devices, even the iOS.

Crime doesn’t pay

IN BRIEF Gritty drama ‘Fruitvale’ wins top Sundance prize Fruitvale, a film about a notorious US police shooting of an unarmed black man, won top prize Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival, while movies from Russia and South Korea were among non-US winners. The movie by first-time director Ryan Coogler won the US drama Grand Jury award, as well as the US drama audience award at America’s premier independent movie showcase. In non-US categories, the Grand Jury Prize for a foreign drama went to Jiseul by South Korea’s Muel O, while Cambodian Kalyanee Mam’s A River Changes Course took the Grand Jury Prize for a foreign documentary.

Killing Them Softly FILM REVIEW Tom Metcalfe editor2@thephuketnews.com

DIRECTOR: Andrew Dominik STARRING: Brad Pitt Scoot McNairy Ben Mendelsohn James Gandolfini Ray Liotta Richard Jenkins RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes

I

t’s the fall of 2008, in the midst of the US financial crisis, and the mob is having trouble with money, like everyone else. Enforcer Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) is contracted to find out who jacked a Boston card game run by small-time hood Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta). Cogan yearns for a clean kill, and he figures Trattman has to die, even if he wasn’t to blame. But his mobster bosses are squeemish, and Cogan first has to hunt down the the freelance hoods who raided the game. Australian director Andrew Dominik has been accused by some of making a “neo-noir” movie, which suggests he has followed a formula. But Killing Them Softly trades in moments that other crime movies leave out. Trattman weeps as he is brutally beaten by his friends; and criminals lose their cool and express friendship, remorse, and frustration: “None of this s*** means anything anyway,” laments hoodlum Frankie (Scoot McNairy) after his buddy Russell (Ben Mendelsohn) is collared by the police.

The mob bosses who run the gambling have adopted a “total corporate mentality”, says their insipid envoy Driver (Richard Jenkins), who gives Cogan his instructions and tries to chisel him out of payment. The action plays out to the soundtrack of political speeches of the time, in an attempt to relate the collapse of a criminal conspiracy to the collapse of the world financial system. But there little sense of anything deeper to that comparison (and the novel that the movie is based on, Cogan’s Trade by George Higgins, is set in the 1970s). Throughout, Cogan tries to affect the cool style of a business-like Angel of Death – but he’s frustrated by his bosses, by the people he works with, and even by his victims. He doesn’t like killing up close, or killing people he knows: “They get touchie-feelie. I like to kill them softly, from a distance.” Killing Them Softly is much more a black comedy than a noirish crime flick – a stylish portrayal of bad and unlucky men, taking care of their dirty business.

Assange hits out at WikiLeaks movie

ikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has hit out at a Hollywood film about his life and secretspilling website, calling the movie “a massive propaganda attack”. Speaking to students at Britain’s Oxford University by videolink from the Ecuadoran embassy in London, Assange said he had acquired a copy of the script for The Fifth Estate, due to be released in November. “It is a lie upon lie. The movie is a massive propaganda attack on WikiLeaks and the character of my staff,” the Australian internet activist told the audience at the Oxford Union debating club. The movie stars British actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Assange, and is

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak questioned the accuracy of a new film about Steve Jobs, with Ashton Kutcher in the title role. Wozniak, widely known as ‘Woz”, said the movie jOBS erred in its depiction of Jobs and their relationship. “I’m not even sure what it’s getting at,” Woz said. “The personalities are very wrong, although mine is closer.” “We never had such interaction and roles,” Wozniak, who quit Apple in 1987 after 12 years, told the tech blog Gizmodo, after a clip from the movie was posted online ahead of its premier at the Sundance Film Festival.

Comic novel about Hitler’s return is German bestseller

E

ighty years after Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, a novel that imagines his return to modern-day Berlin has become a bestseller in Germany, though a comedy about the Fuhrer is not to everyone’s taste. Instead of committing suicide in his bunker on April 30, 1945, in He’s Back (Er Ist Wieder Da), Hitler wakes up in 2011 without the slightest idea what has happened in the intervening 66 years. He stumbles through Berlin, dazed by the fact that Germany is now ruled by a woman and is home to millions of Turks. In one scene, the Nazi leader asks a group of boys for directions, addressing them as “Ronaldo Hitler youth”. He has mistaken their football shirts bearing the name of the soccer star as some kind of military uniform. “Who’s the old guy?” the boys ask each other. Such is the tone in the nearly 400-page novel by Timur Vermes, a 45-year-old journalist. In a celebrity-obsessed society where success is often gauged by follower numbers on social networks or YouTube views, Hitler soon becomes the star of an entertainment show with a Turkish host. “You’re golden my dear! This is just the beginning, believe me,” his producer says. Bild, Europe’s widest circulation newspaper, complains: “He killed millions of people. Today, millions cheer him on YouTube.” In the book, Hitler discovers jeans, tries to create an email address (“Hitler 89” referring to the year of his birth is already taken) and discovers cooking shows. A farce in poor taste to some, a political satire to others, He’s Back has done well in bookstores. With a print run of 360,000, the book recently made Germany’s bestseller list and is set to be published in English and more than a dozen other languages. The author says he wanted to present Hitler in a new light. “We too often harbour the negative attitude of those who see Hitler only as a monster to make themselves feel better,” Vermes says. “I thought it was important to show how he would operate and how he would act in today’s world.” AFP

Phuket FC Islanders launch new-look team FOOTBALL

P

huket FC presented their 2013 football squad to the public at Central Festival on Saturday. The players were brought onto the stage in pairs wear-

ing their new 2013 design strip, to the sound of loud music and the impassioned cheering of fans. It was the first time this season’s full squad has formally assembled. The most recent player signings were

only finalised days ago, and there are rumours of a few more big names still to come. The event was also the unveiling of the new Phuket FC home (green and white) and away (red and black) player strips, and the first time the

new Phuket FC supporter’s shirt has been on sale to fans. Some fans queued since 11am to buy the new shirts, and many collected autographs on their shirts in marker pen from the Phuket FC players and coaches.

Favourites pull away in Super Six FOOTBALL

Times ended in a 3-3 draw. Blue D Zine PSU FC vs Bat Fire: 2 – 2 PSU were disappointed to share the spoils with Bat Fire, who fought hard to achieve a 2-2 draw.

AFTER ROUND 3 OF THE 4th season of Phuket’s Super Six Football League, two teams now stand out as favourites in the league’s top division 1. But the results are still very even in divisions 2 and 3. Division 1 Pita Bar Phuketeers vs Morning Star: 2 – 2 Title defenders Morning Star were looking to maintain their momentum against new boys Pita Bar Phuketeers. Pita Bar made their in the first half, but Morning Star took two goals against the run of play. In the second half the game evened out slightly, but Pita Bar scored twice at the end to make it a 2-2 draw. Joy Dive FC vs Shakers FC: 6–3 Joy Dive looked to consolidate their start in the league with a win against an injury-ridden Shakers team. Shakers were ahead early in the game, but Joy Dive turned it around after Shakers lost their keeper to in-

American Jon Wiegand on the ball for Shakers FC in their third-round division 1 game against Joy Dive FC. jury and one of their defenders was given a red card. Nanai Boys: vs Banana FC A: 6 – 7 Nanai Boys looked in early control with a 3-0 lead, but a slight collapse in their formation combined with the never-saydie attitude of their opponents meant the experienced Banana FC A team pinched a narrow 7-6 victory. Holiday Inn FC vs Phuket Condos & Homes: 2 – 9 Andres Pira’s skilled crew of Burmese footballers delivered a rock-solid 9-2 win against Thai team Holiday Inn. The opposition never stood a chance.

Phuket Condo & Homes are now in pole position, alongside Joy Dive. Division 2 Big Apple & Pita vs Mr Moo: 2 – 1 Big Apple & Pita made a graceful entrance into division 2, with a surprise 2-1 win against the experienced Mr Moo. Phuket Serenity Villas vs Seduction: 4 – 4 PSV had to share points with Seduction after being ahead most of the game. Atmanjai vs Irish Times: 3 – 3 A thrilling local derby between expat teams Atmanjai and Irish

Division 3 Banana FC B vs Two Chefs: 1–2 The first win of the season for Two Chefs, after being down 1-0 at half time. Champions step up for Taekwondo ambitions MARTIAL ARTS Jody Houton editor3@thephuketnews.com

T

he coach of the national Taekwondo team, Choi Young Seok, says last weekend’s Phuket International Taekwondo Championship was an important step in Thailand’s pursuit of international success in the sport. Speaking to The Phuket News at the 4,000 seater stadium in Saphan Hin, the superstar Korean martial artist said that in order to improve, it was imperative for Thai athletes to get opportunities to compete against international opponents, and that the event – the first of its kind held in Thailand – would pave the way for future Thai champions. “Initially I just wanted to arrange a domestic competition,” said Mr Seok, who is also the chairman of the organising committee. “But after I announced I was go-

Above: Thai national coach Choi Young Seok. ing to have this competition, representatives from Korea contacted me to tell me they were interested in joining, and then Taipei said they wanted to join and it just went from there really.” Athletes from 18 countries outside Thailand took part, including Kuwait, Australia, Russia, Vietnam and Mynamar. About 1,500 bouts took place over the two-day tournament, with competitors

from the age of four and up vying for golds, silver and bronze awards in their weight divisions. Mr Seok said that he was very happy with the quality of martial arts on display throughout the weekend and said that in general he had high hopes for the future of Thai Taekwondo. “Now Thailand has a very high ranking in the world of Taekwondo. In the male cat-

egory we are 6th and female we are 4th. We are very high class,” said Mr Seok He puts down to synergy: “We get a lot of support from the government, we have very good management and very high level of training.” Many of the athletes will meet again in a few months time at the 9 th Chuncheon Open International Taekwondo Championships 2013, in Gangwon-do in South Korea.

THE PHUKET SCHOOLS Football League kicked-off last weekend – the first round games included teams from Kajonkietsuksa and Headstart International schools, who played on the HeadStart pitch in Kathu on Saturday (January 26). Six schools are fielding teams in the inaugrual league: Headstart, Kajonkietsuksa, British International School, Darasamuth, Ban Talat Nua, and Quality Schools International. Jazon Edouard, the league organiser and the director of HeadStart International, says the schools’ league aims to provide a good venue for students to participate in football, where they could get good exercise and enjoy a friendly competition. The league is organised into Under 10, Under 13, and Over 14 teams. Each team will play two games against each of the other school teams in their age category, one home game and one away game. The seven-a-side games will be played every Saturday morning until March 30.

Among the yachts taking part in the Bay Regatta between Phuket and Krabi this week is one crewed by the first all-women team to enter the four-day race. The crew of Lady Sevenstar consists of seven women with all levels of sailing skills, from professional sailors to occasional weekend yachtswomen and even an absolute novice. “It can be quite daunting for a woman to hold

her own amongst male sailors aboard a yacht,” said Marieke Derks, the Lady Sevenstar captain. “By creating a supportive atmosphere on board we expect to see more women join us on the water.” The Bay Regatta, organised by the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, held its first day of racing yesterday. The regatta ends on Sunday after three more days of racing around Phang Nga Bay.

PREMIER LEAGUE PREDICTIONS: WEEK 26

City miss Balotelli magic FOOTBALL

M

a nchester Cit y started life without Mario Balotelli in a goalless draw away to Premier League basement club Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday. Balotelli was missing as he concluded the details of his move to AC Milan after City had accepted the Italian club’s reported £19 million (B890 million) offer for the striker earlier in the day. Without the controversial forward, the champions missed out on the chance to close the gap on leaders Manchester United to two points. City were dominant from the start but they were unable to find the finish that would have put them in control. The draw means QPR stay at the bottom of the table, but just four points from safety. Aston Villa’s fortunes continued to plunge as they sank into the bottom three with a 2-1 loss at home to relegation rivals Newcastle United. Goals from Papiss Cisse and Yohan Cabaye put the visitors 2-0 up after 31 minutes and despite a valiant fightback

Already gone: Mario Balotelli was missing from the Manchester City squad that drew with QPR. Photo: Steindy sparked by a Christian Benteke penalty, Villa saw their run of league games without a win extended to seven, while Newcastle ended a run of five matches without victory, climbing to 15th in the league table. Wigan Athletic capitalised on Villa’s slip-up by storming back from 2-0 down at Stoke City to earn a 2-2 draw that lifted them out of the bottom three. Goals from Ryan Shawcross and Peter Crouch looked to have put the hosts in command, but a James McArthur goal halved the deficit and Franco Di Santo equalised in

the 61st minute. The draw saw Stoke, who have only won one of their last nine matches, stay in 10th spot, while the Latics moved up to 17th in the table, ahead of Aston Villa on points difference and one point ahead of Reading. League Cup finalists Swansea City were held to a goalless draw at Sunderland, but the point was still enough for Michael Laudrup’s men to clamber above West Bromwich Albion into eighth place. Olivier Giroud helped Arsenal silence their critics with two goals that inspired

a much-needed 5-1 victory over West Ham. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was said to have held crisis talks with his players this week, and the Gunners looked set to hit a new low when Jack Collison gave West Ham a shock first-half lead at the Emirates Stadium. But Arsenal bounced back in emphatic fashion, equalising through Lukas Podolski and then taking the points after Giroud sparked an astonishing spree of four goals in 10 second-half minutes, with Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott on the scoresheet before Giroud completed the rout. Arsenal remain in sixth place, but their first league win in four matches moves them within four points of fourth-placed Tottenham in the race to qualify for the Champions League. Only five Premier League games were played this week. As The Phuket News tipping competition goes into its final week of January, Keefers Kathu still leads the monthly scores with 75 points, but suncat100 is on 73 and diggersd is just a point behind

New Orleans Super Bowl Sunday US SPORT M O R E T H A N 75 , 0 0 0 football fans from across the United States will pack New Orleans’ Superdome for Sunday’s NFL Super Bowl clash between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. It’s a big moment for the city and its iconic stadium, eight years after the Superdome was packed with desperate refugees from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. On Sunday, the first Super Bowl in the Superdome since Katrina will signal that the city – famous for its Mardi Gras – is having fun again.

“It’s our biggest global moment,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “You have a city that’s going to be on the world stage dramatically changed.” Parades and parties began last week for the Carnival and its centrepiece party, the Mardi Gras, will be held Tuesday. But for the players it will be

business as usual while their supporters frolic in the French Quarter, near both team’s hotels. “We’re not going to New Orleans for nothing else but to bring a [championship] ring back to Baltimore,” said Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis in Baltimore before the team flight. Sunday’s game is the first time that two brothers will be pitted against each other as coaches: San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Ravens coach John Harbaugh. Brother Jim was a fan at the 1990 Super Bowl, the fourth of five Super Bowl triumphs by the 49ers, who have never lost a Super Bowl final. AFP

Six Nations go to war RUGBY

Professional rugby has not been kind to Scotland, with the Test side now selected from just two home-based ‘pro teams’ in Edinburgh

S

The 2013 Six Nations Rugby Championships get underway tomorrow, pitting reigning champions Wales against perennial favourites England and challengers Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy. This year’s tournament runs from Saturday, February 2 to February 14. It is the 131st edition of the world’s oldest international rugby competition, which began in 1871 as a single friendly game between England and Scotland. ENGLAND: England’s stunning 38-21 defeat of world champions New Zealand last time out in December means they have set the bar high for themselves. They will face the pressure of national expectations as never before in this season’s Six Nations Championship. But there are still doubts

that England has sufficient creativity behind the scrum to ensure the win over New Zealand becomes more than a glorious one-off. England play Scotland in their first game at Twickenham on Saturday – a late addition to the squad is uncapped Gloucester centre Bill Twelvetrees, who has been in fine form this season, impressing with his handling game and all-round ball-playing skills. SCOTLAND: Scotland finished with the wooden spoon in last season’s Six Nations and face a daunting start against England at Twickenham, where they haven’t won since 1983.
