is Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun will cover all medical costs for Yuenyong “D Max” Chairab, the 7-year-old boy savaged by stray dogs last Sunday, and has ordered for him to be cared for by royal command, Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana announced this week. The royal order was issued on Monday, Governor Phakaphong said on Wednesday (Jan 30) during another visit to provide support for Yuenyong “D Max” Chairab and to
check on the boy’s recovery progress. D Max was attacked by four stray dogs on the north side of the bridges off the island, in Phang Nga Province, at about 10am last Sunday while he was collecting shells with his brother and a friend. The attack left D Max with gruesome injuries, explained Dr Chalermpong Sukontapol, Director of Vachira Phuket Hospital, where D Max is receiving medical care and has undergone surgery. “D Max had over 100 wounds on his arms, legs, head and ears,” Dr Chalermpong said. The boy’s left ear was nearly ripped from his head.
Dr Chalermpong noted that D Max’s condition was already improving on Monday (Jan 28). “He could breathe on his own, and he could start to eat soft foods on his own,” he said. “By Tuesday, he had improved further and was able to help himself more, and the wounds that had been treated, especially the ear, were healing well,” he added. “Today, we will bring D Max to the operating room again to examine the wounds closely,” Dr Chalermpong said on Wednesday. “We are still providing him with full medication to prevent bacteria and other complications that may cause

an infection in the blood,” he added. Meanwhile, the Phuket office of the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) along with staffers from the Soi Dog Foundation on Tuesday went to the village at Tha Chatchai on the south side of the bridges off Phuket to inspect the stray dogs there. “We are starting here because this is the area closest to where D Max was attacked,” Phuket DLD Acting Chief Manat Thepparat told The Phuket News. If the dogs do not show signs of rabies, they will be sterilised and taken to an animal shelter. “During the inspection we found dogs all over the place. Most of them were strays. Some dogs allowed us to catch them and vaccinate them, but some dogs ran away. In total 24 dogs were vaccinated,” Mr Manat said. “We found three aggressive dogs, which we shot with tranquiliser darts, but two of the dogs ran off and we could not find where they went before they fell asleep, “We took the dog that we caught, which will be sterilised and vaccinated for rabies. This dog will be taken to the Phuket Stray Dog Shelter in Thalang, which currently holds around 700 dogs,” he said, adding that DLD officers will continue to look for the two aggressive dogs that eluded capture. A survey of all the stray dogs and cats across Phuket will be carried out throughout February, Mr Manat explained. “I want to know how many there are in each area so we can accurately report how many there are on the island. Also, once we know how many there are, we can prepare our

For the assessment each municipality will report how many strays are in their area. Then in March each municipality will oversee the mass sterilisation and vaccinations of cats and dogs in its area with support by the DLD. “But ONLY aggressive dogs will be removed,” Mr Manat stressed. “After that each municipality will be held responsible for the stray dogs in their own areas. That way each area looks after itself,” he said. “In my opinion there are many stray dogs in Phuket that people treat kindly and feed regularly, but will not take responsibility if the dog bites anyone,” Mr Manat noted. “If people are going to care for it, they should be more involved in making sure the dog is safe and healthy.”

wo Russian women who were only passengers on two jet-skis that collided off Kata Noi Beach on Monday (Jan 28) have been charged with recklessness causing injury to others – the same charge and fine as levied on the two Russian men who were actually driving the jet-skis. The women, Tatiana Lysova, 23, and Olga Isaicheva, 30, were sitting on jet-skis being driven by Ivan Smoliagin, 36, and Ivan Fediaey, 31, respectively, when the two jet-skis collided, explained Capt Weerayut Thansirisookworakun of the Karon Police on Tuesday. Ms Lysova was taken to the Accident & Emergency Centre at the yet-to-be-complete Chalong Hospital for further examination late Monday afternoon after she complained of pain to her head and back. Doctors conducted x-rays and medical examinations and confirmed that her injuries were not serious and she was discharged from medical care, Capt Weerayut confirmed.
The compensation has yet to be negotiated. The two women were slightly injured in the collision. Photos: Phuket Tourist Police None of the other three suffered any serious injuries in the collision, he added. The four were on a holiday package provided by BiblioGlobus tour company, Capt Weerayut said. “They were staying at The Crib Patong hotel. They came to Kata Noi Beach and rented two jet-skis,’ he said. Ivan Smoliagin was driving a red jet-ski, owned by Sakun Kaewsakorn, with Ms Lysova sitting behind as passenger, Capt Weerayut explained.
Mr Ivan Fediaey was driving a green jet-ski, owned by Prakit Sornin, with Ms Isaicneva riding behind as passenger, he added. “Mr Prakit (the owner of one of the jet-skis) said that the four were teasing each other on the jet-skis and in the end they collided and damaged the jet-skis,” Capt Weerayut said. “All four Russian tourists were charged with recklessness causing injury to others and each were fined B1,000,” Capt Weerayut confirmed.
However, the amount of compensation for damage to the jet-skis remains to be negotiated, he said. “I can’t be sure about the compensation for damage to the jet-skis. That’s their business to talk about the cost. I am out of this part,” Capt Weerayut said. “The amount might depend on the jet-skis’ insurance policies. They will come to talk about it at the police station this afternoon (Tuesday),” he added.

he Border Patrol Police lance corporal arrested for shooting dead a local councillor’s son in the street near Saphan Hin early on Jan 19 has confessed to the killing, police have confirmed to The Phuket News. L/Cpl Jakkrit Sangsaart, 23, from Chachoengsao, presented himself at Wichit Police Station at 5:30pm last Sunday (Jan 20) for the fatal shooting of Theerasak Sae-Ong. Mr Theerasak, the 30-yearold son of Rassada Municipality councillor Charoen Sae-Ong, was gunned down on Rattanakosin 200 Pi Rd at about 3:30am last Saturday. Police reported finding at the scene seven bullet casings, but no firearms were reported as found. Mr Theerasak had a bullet wound on his left temple and an exit wound on his right temple. Within hours police had arrest warrants issued for L/ Cpl Jakkrit and his associate Kongkiat Songkram, whom

After presenting himself at Wichit Police Station last Sunday, L/Cpl Jakkrit denied the charge of murder and the charge of carrying a firearm in public without a permit. However, Wichit Police Chief Col Nikorn Somsuk told The Phuket News late last Friday (Jan 25) that L/Cpl Jakkrit has changed his statement and has now accepted both charges against him. “Mr Jakkrit has confessed to the murder charge and to the
charge of carrying a firearm in a public place,” he said. Col Nikorn refused to explain how or when L/Cpl Jakkrit changed his mind and made his confession. The best Col Nikorn would explain was “during the investigation process”. At last report, L/Cpl Jakkrit last Sunday had denied both charges and was released on B400,000 bail granted by the Wichit Police. The Phuket Provincial Court and the Phuket Public Prosecutor’s Office had no role
in the decision to allow the murder suspect to walk free. Meanwhile, Wichit Police are now working on having the murder charge against Kongkiat Songkram dropped. “Jakkrit confessed that he did it alone and that he was the gunman. Nobody else was involved in this crime. Only himself did it,” Col Nikorn said. “Also, the witness confirmed with investigators that they saw him (Kongkiat) in the dark. It was not clear," he added.
A PHUKET TOUR SPEEDboat took on water and capsized en route to Phi Phi Island after departing Chalong Pier last Friday morning (Jan 25). The Phuket Marine Office was informed by staff at Chalong Pier at about 11:40am that the tour speedboat Aphitada 1 was taking on water and had called for assistance, reported Thai-language newspaper Matichon. The boat had departed Chalong Pier earlier that morning with 43 people on board – 38 tourists, and five crew, on a tour around Maithon Island and Phi Phi Island, one of the tourists later reported to The Phuket News. The boat was en route from Maithon Island to Phi Phi Island when it began taking on water. The captain pulled the boat close to Koh Dok Mai, about
13 kilometres direct east of the tip of Cape Panwa. Another boat passing through the area soon arrived and safely recovered all the tourists and crew. The tourists were put on board another boat to continue their journey to Phi Phi Island. The company that operates the Aphitada 1 is located in Wichit, Phuket, said a report by Thai daily Matichon, but failed to identify which company. A tourist on the boat that sank later confirmed the company to be Andavaree. Conditions on the bay were mild, with light breezes and some strong gusts, but waves not reaching more than one metre in height. What caused the leaky tour speedboat to take on water is now being investigated. The Phuket News

SENIOR MANAGEMENT at a resort on Koh Racha Yai will face a charge of having coral illegally on the resort premises and for damaging reefs, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) Phuket office has confirmed. The news follows an inspection on Koh Racha, south of Phuket, last Thursday (Jan 24), said Nares Choopueng of the DMCR Phuket office. The inspection team comprised officers from the DMCR Phuket, Royal Thai Navy personnel and the Chalong Police. Key to the inspection was a canal that runs alongside the Racha Island Resort, also called the Rayaburi, where dead corals were found piled up for about 50 metres along the banks of the canal. “Officers also found lots of dead corals piled up on

Killer cop playbook
he lack of public interest in a policeman shooting dead an unarmed citizen on the streets of Phuket this past week is plainly disturbing. Is that what people in Phuket consider as run-of-the-mill in 2019? For all those who think this is a “Thai” reaction, by playing possum and not making any enquiries, think again. Simply by the statistics, foreigners this week have been more interested in Russians paying for jet-ski damage and an airport security staffer being slapped. If the reader statistics have shown us anything it is that this week we got a real good look in the mirror. The numbers have plainly questioned whether Westerners who live here, regularly visit here or are related in any long-term way to here even care if Thai cops gun down Thai civilians on the street.

any responsibility for the case. Like we haven’t seen this one before. Just like every single police officer in Phuket who has been transferred “pending an investigation” for corruption or other wrongdoing, including the allegedly extrajudicial killing in a police chase just three months ago. So far we have been given no motive for the killing, no firearm recovered and the suspect remains out on bail despite confessing that his first statement to police was a lie. And this is when local police get to investigate local police for a fatal shooting. In contrast, in Bangkok in late December it took police just hours to dismiss an officer from the force and confirm that a murder charge will be pressed against him for shooting dead a French tourist. What’s so different in Phuket?

Even the recurring story given most suspicion by our readers, a standard announcement by the TAT that the country is on track for another record-breaking year in tourist arrivals, far outweighed interest among readers. We can justify this any way we want. We could say, “This happens elsewhere around the world” or “I don’t engage in those types of social circles”. But it doesn’t stick. If this happened in any foreigner’s hometown the reaction would be very different. Killer cops are not the norm; heaven help us if that is so. Meanwhile, the police seem to be playing this one by the standard playbook. Aussie PM urges Thailand to free refugee footballer BANGKOK AFP
A
ustralian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called on his Thai counterpart to release a footballer held for more than two months on an extradition request from Bahrain. Hakeem al-Araibi, a Bahraini refugee and Australian resident, fears torture and even death if he is returned to his homeland. He was detained by Thai immigration authorities in November after arriving in Bangkok with his wife for their honeymoon. The 25-year-old had played for Bahrain’s national youth team before he fled his homeland and was granted asylum in Australia, where he plays semi-professionally in Melbourne. Morrison raised the issue in a letter to Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha as Canberra stepped up its efforts to secure Araibi’s return home. A spokeswoman for foreign minister Marise Payne said in a statement to AFP Wednesday that her government was making “extensive efforts” on behalf of Araibi. Morrison’s office did not release details about the letter but the Sydney Morning Herald said he stressed that Araibi had been issued a permanent protection visa by Australia after a deliberate and considered process.

Govt names May 6 as holiday NATIONWIDE Hakeem al-Araibi claims he is being targeted by Bahrain over his criticism of AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, a member of the ruling family. Photo: AFP The PM also wrote that returning the footballer to Bahrain would infringe his rights under international human rights law. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) called for Araibi’s release Tuesday after coming under fire for its silence on the case. The player claims he is being targeted by Bahrain over his criticism of AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, a member of the ruling family. Araibi was first arrested in Bahrain in 2012 and says he was tortured, allegedly for his brother’s political activities. In 2014 he was convicted of vandalising a
police station. At the time of the alleged crime, Araibi was playing in a televised football match. He was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison and later fled to Australia. On Wednesday Human Rights Watch released a statement demanding the player’s immediate release following strong statements on his behalf by FIFA and The Olympic Committee. Human Rights Watch has extensively documented the widespread torture and ill-treatment of detained activists and dissidents by Bahraini security forces since the 2011 anti-government protests.
THE GOVERNMENT HAS announced May 6, the final day of His Majesty the King’s three-day coronation, as a special national holiday. That is the day the King will receive foreign diplomats and greet his people, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Wednesday. A day off for both state and private sectors will ensure all events go smoothly, he said. The King will pay respects to deities on May 2, followed by a ritual to carry phra suphannabap, a golden sheet with his name inscribed, to a palace on May 3. The coronation will take
place on the morning of May 4, a Saturday, before the King performs a liap phranakhon ceremony, a short trip arranged in a traditional procession in parts of Bangkok, the following day. Though the most important events are held in this period, preparations for the ceremony will begin from early April and a post-coronation ceremony is also scheduled in May, Gen Prayut said. The prime minister himself will preside over a ritual to have monks bless water collected from 108 sacred sources across the country, to be held between April 18 and 19 at Wat Suthat Thepphawararam in the capital. Corruption grows in Thailand Official data links diminished democracy to increased corruption NATIONWIDE

T
hailand dropped to 36 points, one lower than the previous year, in Transparency International’s 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index released Wednesday. The index ranges from 100 (very clean) to 0 (very corrupt). Among its Southeast Asian neighbours, the Kingdom’s 36 points compared – in descending order of ‘cleanliness’ – to Singapore’s 85 (down 1 point from a year earlier), Malaysia’s 47 (no change), Indonesia’s 38 (down 1), Philippines’ 36 (up 2), Vietnam’s 33 (down 2), Myanmar’s 29 (down 1) and Cambodia’s 20 (down 1). The worldwide average score was 43. Thailand ranked joint No.99 out of 180 countries and territories in the survey. Singapore was joint third in the world rankings, Malaysia No.61, Indonesia No.89, Vietnam No.117, Myanmar No.132 and Cambodia No.161. Denmark was in the top spot, followed by New Zealand. The closely watched survey found that countries like Hungary and Turkey are growing more corrupt as they become more autocratic, and threats to the American system
of checks and balances have knocked the United States out of the top 20 ‘cleanest’ countries. The index is calculated using 13 different data sources that provide perceptions of public sector corruption from business people and country experts. These include the African Development Bank Country Policy and Institutional Assessment, the World Bank Country Policy and Institutional Assessment, the World Economic Forum Executive Opinion Survey and the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index
Expert Survey. Transparency International said its Corruption Perceptions Index for 2018 showed more than two-thirds of countries scoring below 50 on its scale where 100 is very clean and zero is very corrupt. With a score of 71, the US lost four points over 2017 and dropped out of the top 20 nations for the first time since 2011. “A four point drop in the CPI score is a red flag and comes at a time when the US is experiencing threats to its system of checks and
balance, as well as an erosion of ethical norms at the highest levels of power,” the Berlin-based organisation said. “If this trend continues, it would indicate a serious corruption problem in a country that has taken a lead on the issue globally.” In a cross-analysis of its survey with global democracy data, Transparency said a link could be drawn between corruption and the health of a democracy. Full democracies scored an average of 75 on the corruption index, flawed democracies averaged 49, and autocratic regimes averaged 30, the organisation said. It noted that Hungary dropped eight points and Turkey nine over the past five years, to scores of 46 and 41, respectively. At the same time, the report cited Freedom House’s annual democracy survey, noting Turkey was downgraded from “partly free” to “not free,” while Hungary registered its lowest score for political rights since the fall of communism in 1989. The ratings reflect the “deterioration of rule of law and democratic institutions, as well as a rapidly shrinking space for civil society and independent media,” the organisation said.
“Our research makes a clear link between having a healthy democracy and successfully fighting public sector corruption,” said Delia Ferreira Rubio, the head of Transparency. “Corruption is much more likely to flourish where democratic foundations are weak and, as we have seen in many countries, where undemocratic and populist politicians can use it to their advantage.” Overall, Denmark led the survey as the least corrupt nation, with a score of 88, followed by New Zealand, Finland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland. Rounding out the top group were Norway, Netherlands, Canada, Luxembourg, Germany and Britain. Somalia was rated the most corrupt with a score of 10, followed by Syria, South Sudan, Yemen, North Korea, Sudan, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Afghanistan and Libya. Since 2012, only 20 nations had significantly improved their scores, including Argentina and Ivory Coast, which scored 40 and 35 respectively, up from 35 and 29. At the same time, 16 have declined significantly in that time, including Australia, which slipped from a score of 85 to 77, and Chile, which dropped from 72 to 67.

TYS lures Asia’s big fish
Thailand marine industry unites around single show SPONSORED
H
aving brought all the disparate, previously competing parties together in a single Phuket boat show, the Thailand Yacht Show & RendezVous offered an all-embracing event at the Royal Phuket Marina last month for yachting enthusiasts and wealthy lifestyle-seekers from around Asia. Leading international yacht dealers, brokerage houses, charter agencies and marine suppliers in abundance showcase their brands at this year’s Thailand Yacht Show & RendezVous, complemented by luxury property developers and a collective mix of lavish lifestyle products. With a decisive show of unity, the industry’s global players joined Thailand’s key marine tourism stakeholders – including a strong attendance of representatives from national and local government – who have all thrown their support behind the Thailand Yacht Show’s four-year mission to open up Thai waters to foreign yacht tourism and grow the industry. “Despite having only three months to prepare, we have seen excellent support from both the

The fourth Thailand Yacht Show & RendezVous (TYS) held earlier this month at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina offered an all-embracing event for yachting enthusiasts and wealthy lifestyleseekers from around Asia. public and private sectors. The Thai Government remain unswerving in their determination to support and grow the yachting industry representatives of every key public department came to a forum at the show, and to a second meeting last week. They all understand that this industry can bring much-needed cash into local businesses by changing regulations where necessary to enable foreign superyacht charter tourism.
The private sector made it clear they wanted a single show in Phuket. The results speak for themselves, with confirmed yacht sales, lots of business transacted by exhibitors across all sectors, and good visitor numbers over the first three days,” said Andy Treadwell, CEO of show organisers Verventia. “What will we be able to do with a whole year to prepare the 2020 edition!” Richard Allen, General Manager
of Simpson Marine, said, “As ever, Simpson Marine had the biggest display of new yachts at the show, representing our brands Monte Carlo Yachts, Beneteau, Lagoon, Aquilla and Sanlorenzo. I am pleased to say we made some sales during the show itself and have a number of other negotiations to conclude. Our charter team also saw a big increase in bookings during the show and Phuket still remains the premier charter destination in Asia. With just one show in Phuket, we hope the Thailand Yacht Show & RendezVous can grow into a bigger and better event each year in the future.” Speaking about the quality of visitors this year, Andrew de Bruin, General Manager of Multihull Solutions said, “Multihull Solutions were very pleased to again join the Thailand Yacht Show & RendezVous as an exhibitor with three yachts displayed in the marina. The quality of visitors was top rate and our vessels received great exposure. The joining together of all the shows is a definite winner for all involved and we look forward to booking space in next year’s event at the first opportunity.” Phuket’s position as Asia’s yachting playground is clear, and as
more people experience it, word is spreading globally of the world-class cruising grounds and the onshore support facilities to match. Moored off the stunning island of Koh Rang Noi at the show’s superyacht hub were a number of impressive visiting yachts, including the 54m M/Y Talisman Maiton and 73m M/Y Titania. The Thailand Yacht Show & RendezVous has been a key industry and government focus for changing local regulations to attract more international superyachts to the country, and results are beginning to show. Bloomberg’s latest global superyacht tracker recorded movements of superyachts between November 2018 and January 2019, and Thailand placed fourth as a winter destination behind Sint Maarten, St. Barts, and Antigua, welcoming an influx of superyachts during the Christmas and New Year peak season. “The single show concept has proved to be a huge success for the industry. We will continue to work closely with the Thai government and the private sector to hopefully get the changes to the tax regulations we need, and will build on this year’s success to make 2020 even bigger and deliver a strong ROI for all parties,” added Treadwell.

That personal touch
Express Carpet brings Bangkok fashion, expertise to Phuket RETAIL Chris Husted execeditor@classactmedia.co.th
A
new word is circling among homeowners on Phuket’s northwest coast, spoken so quietly it is barely a whisper: “carpet”. Well, rugs too, if we want to be specific. The silent arrival of Express Carpet & Decor in Cherng Talay in October has not gone unnoticed. The doors opened and the first person to take advantage of the new outlet was a loyal customer from Bangkok. “She wanted something for her villa here in Phuket,” explains Rawewan “Moo” Kowsurat, Business Development Director of the family business that first opened its doors in Bangkok 47 years ago. Since then the range of customers walking in has been nearly as wide and varied as the range of floor coverings on offer, with families taking centre stage. “Already, we have had a mix of Thais and foreigners, aged 30s-40s -plus. Most of the people coming have been selecting something for their homes,” Khun Moo notes. “Every house should have one piece of carpet, to bring a personal touch to the home,” she adds.
A woman inspects the selection on offer at the new Express Carpet & Decor outlet in Baan Manik, Srisoonthorn. Photo: Supplied
The new opening of Express Carpet & Decor in Baan Manik, Cherng Talay, sits amid Phuket’s expat family heartland, located at Wana Park, directly across from the well-known Tile-It showroom and just in front of the renowned Suay restaurant along the entrance to the Baan Wana estate. Heroines’ Monument is only five minutes’ drive along Srisoonthorn Rd, while the Laguna area is only five minutes westward. “We don’t want to be in town,” Khun Moo explains. “We want to be in touch with our customers. We know where they are,” she smiles. Initially, customers focused on outdoor, natural fabrics
and styles, for use in Phuket’s tropical climate. Handily, the range available are fungus and UV resistant, and easily cope with dew and water. Some of them you can even hose off and hang to dry. Yet in the few months the store has been open customers are now looking at, and buying, all sorts of styles and fabrics. “Just days ago we had a hotel GM (General Manager) who bought 50 pieces,” Khun Moo says. The corporate clients on the island include the Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach and the Absolute Twin Sands Resort & Spa at Tri Trang Beach, with more already expressing interest.
The range is key to the appeal, with prices from B2,000 up – for use under dining tables, in living rooms, bedrooms, indoor/outdoor area patios, all the way down to bathmats and doormats. “The shaggy style is currently very popular in Bangkok, but even then other people are just choosing what they like most, with patterned modern short pile, which is easy to maintain, also proving popular,” Khun Moo notes. Express Carpet can cater right up to the high end, the team literally caters to red carpet events and keeps an A-list of celebrity clients in the capital. The nature of the guests and occasions of the some
events makes them unavailable to mention for promotional purposes, but one of Express Carpet’s main highlights was been being called on to provide 2,000 square metres of prime, pristine carpet for the wedding of Ravi Itiravivong and Voramas Srivaddhanaprabha, the daughter of King Power founder Khun Vichai. The event, held in a glass house built especially for the occasion at Fountain Square, King Power Rangnam, was honoured by the presence of HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana. The exclusive clientele, which includes Athiwara “Toon Bodyslam” Khongmalai, also tend to favour the “modern, stylish, elegant” choices, leading to Express Carpet’s slogan “The Leader of Fashion Carpets” – a slogan given to them by their customers themselves. Among the luxury group machine-tufted carpets available are styles made of chenille and viscose imported from Belgium’s leading manufacturer. “We are the exclusive importer to several ranges,” Khun Moo explains. “Our family was chosen due to the depth of our experience over the years as some of the people we import for cannot risk tarnishing their international brand.” Personalised touches in-
clude custom patterns, logos and motifs, and even free-form shapes and sizes. “Customers can select the yarn such as Acrylic, Nylon, Silk, Rayon etc. and have their carpet hand-tufted to design. It takes 30-60 days, depending on the piece,” Khun Moo says. Of course, wall-to-wall carpet laying also is available. “We have a team in Phuket, but depending on the scale of the project will bring a team down from Bangkok,” Khun Moo notes. The personal touch is central to Express Carpet as a family business, Khun Moo explains. “Many of our team have been with us since the beginning, most of them for 20 to 30 years. We’re pretty much one big family, which is how we began,” she says. Express Carpet & Decor is offering a Carpet Lover promotion from Feb 1 - Mar 3. Phuket’s expats on one of the world’s most celebrated festivals JIN FROM HENAN PROVINCE, CHINA
What brought you to Phuket? It was my fate. In China, my investment failed and I decided to go abroad to teach Mandarin. I arrived on 31 October 2015. I’ll never forget because there was a small earthquake that evening. I thought “Okay, you’re welcoming me Phuket. Thank you!” What do you like about the island? Thailand, I think, has an open, inviting culture. Western and Eastern cultures can exist very well together, no matter the differences between them. I love swimming in the ocean. In my hometown, there is the Yellow River but you have to go to the east of China to see the ocean. I love the nature here too. Most of the cities in China have fast development and the air is not good. Here, you see blue sky nearly every day. How will you be celebrating New Year? Normally on the eve of the Spring Festival, families will eat dumplings so I will do that but with my friends from the UK and Canada. After, I will stream the CCTV New Year’s Gala show which Chinese families have got together to watch on TV ever since it started in 1983. During the show, I will call my parents and wish them health, happiness and long living and tell them not to worry about my future. What is significant about the year of the pig? The pig features in lots of stories in China. There’s a famous novel, Journey to the West, where a general, Bajie, disobeyed the laws in heaven and was sent down to our human world. Unluckily, he fell into a pigsty and became half-pig, half-man. To make up for the bad things he did in heaven, he became a student of Master Tang Seng. They travelled to India to seek Buddhist texts which they spread throughout the Tang dynasty on return to China. I’ve heard from older people that those born in pig years should wear red coloured underwear for good luck. @thephuketnews
LI FROM HONG KONG
QIONG YU FROM SHANGHAI, CHINA
TEACHER LEE FROM BEIJING, CHINA
What does the New Year mean to you? My husband and I both have strong Chinese backgrounds. He is Thai Chinese and I am Hong Kong-born Chinese. Everyone likes to celebrate Chinese New Year in Hong Kong. Whether it’s for the food, to get together with friends, to make money, for the excitement or even just to stay home for five days or more, there is no incentive not to like it. I think, no matter where you are, you cannot forget your country and culture. I will try my best to continue the customs for my children.
How are you finding Phuket? We have come here on holiday every year for the past three years. We like the heat here. My husband is from Harbin near Russia and it’s very cold. We had a hair salon in China but we moved here for my son’s education He goes to an international school. In China, children study very hard and there is a lot of pressure and stress. Here, there isn’t this problem. The children learn a lot but have fun at the same time. He is learning by the environment around him and not by books only.
What brought you to Phuket? I moved to Phuket four years ago to be with my son and my wife. I met my wife 10 years ago whilst performing a wushu show in Phuket Town for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday. We opened our wushu school last year, the first of its kind in Phuket. It’s important as Thailand and China have a good relationship and exchange of culture.
How do you find celebrating New Year in Thailand? I’ve been in Phuket for around a year but I’ve been in Thailand for 15 years in the outskirts of Bangkok, Si Racha, Nonthaburi, Chiang Klong and Chiang Rai. There are little differences in how it’s celebrated around Thailand. In Phuket it’s closer to the Cantonese/ southern Chinese style. In the north, it’s closer to the Yunnan style. In the centre, in Bangkok, it’s closer to the Beijing style.
Who have you brought with you today? This is the first year I’ve spent New Year away from home. My mum and my friend have come over especially so that we could celebrate together. We are an independent family but they think it’s not good for it to just be the three of us (me, my husband and our son) on New Year. In China, we usually go to the homes of our extended family one by one. This year, I will send them The Phuket News article to show them how I am celebrating!
You’ve kindly brought me a present! This is nian gao, a cake made of three ingredients: glutinous rice flour, water and brown sugar. Nian means year and gao means cake. There is a timeframe for making it. On the 28th/29th day of the last month of the Lunar calendar, we clear up our houses ready for the new year. After that, we stick blessing words on our walls and then start making this kind of cake. In the old days, when there was no harvest during winter time and no fridge to store food, they would make a lot of nian gao as it keeps for a long time.
How will you be celebrating New Year? We will cook a big dinner at home including leg of pork and braised fish. Fish must be eaten for good luck and doing so means next year will be rich. We will go to Chalong Temple to buy fireworks to set off in our garden at midnight. When I was young, I really liked the tradition of giving children a red packet with money inside and we will do that for our son. It’s for good luck.
What are your hopes for the next year? I hope for a boom in our business. This year was difficult for a lot of businesses here. I hope my family will all be healthy. I hope Thailand will stay peaceful and united and everyone will help each other more.
What is significant about the year of the pig? In China, we like pigs. They are funny, cute and quite lucky too. They are fat which means they are rich in food. In Chinese folktale they say that the coming year might be challenging for those born in the year of the pig. They may experience bad luck. Wearing red might help to avoid this though.
What is wushu? We can say it’s kung fu and refer to Chinese movies with Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Bruce Lee and you can have some picture of what it is. Although kung fu means time. Anything that takes time to practice to master you can call kung fu. Wushu also needs time. Maybe martial arts is a better term. Wushu can be divided into three types: tai chi which is a slower form of exercise linked to Chinese medicine and focuses on balance; wushu taolu which is jumping and running; and sanda, similar to Thai boxing except wushu does not use elbows and you can throw your opponent. How will you be celebrating New Year? Our students will be performing at shows in Phuket Old Town, by Phuket City Municipality Office, on Feb 10-12. The whole school will perform at the opening ceremony on Feb 10 with a lion dance and wushu display. We will invite the students to our home to eat dumplings too. Even though it’s called Spring Festival, it’s very cold in Beijing at this time so usually we gather round with family, drink, eat and chat. This year I’ll video call my family instead. What are your hopes for the coming year? I only have two wishes. The first wish is a very normal one: that all my family members are healthy and happy. As we have just started the wushu school, the second wish is for more students, both children and adults, so people can understand more about this kind of sport.

In addition, I find that social responsibility has also become a significant factor in my life and my wish to give something back to the community in which I now live. It is with this in mind that I arrive at my destination where I believe I can find both authentic Thai cooking combined with a big bowl of social responsibility. Seedlings was established as a social enterprise concept to empower marginalised local young adults through vocational training and job opportunities and to equip them with the life skills required to forge successful careers in the hospitality business. The restaurant is one of Laguna Phuket’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and has been supported by the Banyan Tree Global Foundation since its inception. A percentage of the restaurant and merchandise profit is donated to Laguna Phuket Foundation’s Seedlings Fund. The training programme begins with 10 months of food and beverage skills training at both Angsana and Banyan Tree properties, further strengthened with training in English language and computer skills. This is followed by two months working in Seedlings in either the restaurant or the kitchen. The impact on the futures of these disadvantaged youths is enormous and creates a sustainable difference within the community too. Arriving at the lobby, I am directed towards a brightly painted airy pagoda-style atrium looking out over the magnificently manicured greens of the golf course. The restaurant is simply furnished and, on looking towards the kitchen, I see a landscape of photos of past graduates in action poses, smiling infectiously from ear to ear. Whilst the restaurant is Thai-focused with Phuketian specialties featured, there are also a few Western dishes available. I begin with starters of crispy rice cakes with peanut sauce and fried tofu skin packages filled with prawns accompanied by a sweet chili dipping sauce. The peanut sauce is tasty, the prawns both tender and juicy combined with a flaky yet crunchy crust. A great start. This is followed by a piping hot Tom Som Pla Krapong, a wonderfully clear, fragrant soup with fresh white snapper from the Andaman. Then one of my favourites arrives: Moo Hong, a southern specialty of unctuous stewed pork belly cooked low and slow with a perfect balance of sweet and saltiness, reminding me ever so slightly of my Scottish roots and my partiality for oxtail. Another southern classic of yellow curry with chunks of fresh local crab
in a creamy sauce with a generous hit of spice is brought to the table along with a Seedlings signature dish of Mee Hokkien, a famous Phuket dish of Chinese influence with tasty egg noodles wrapped around fresh local seafood and coated in a rich dark sauce. Be sure to leave room for dessert. The short selection includes Bee Ko Muay (dark, rich, sticky rice dressed with fresh coconut milk) and a refreshing Oh-Aew (banana jelly with red beans in delicate jasmine syrup). I depart having been well taken care of by the team both in the restaurant and the kitchen. Seedlings itself has a pleasant setting and is well suited to a light lunch or early evening bite with family or friends. This venture is both authentic and heartwarming to the core. The food and service are undoubtedly a reflection of the young graduates’ enthusiasm and passion for their new careers. Flavours positively shine through. ENTERTAINMENT 13
Hit series proves that a tidy house really does equal a tidy mind Amy Bryant editor1@classactmedia.co.th
I
was a bit of a strange child. I used to, and still do, enjoy tidying; actively taking pleasure in it. During school holidays, I would, without prompt, take an entire day out to declutter, rearrange and clean my room then wait impatiently for my dad to return from work so I could show off the transformation. (Envious parents please note I was a little terror in other ways…) Imagine my thrill, then, at discovering a TV show about tidying. Then discovering it’s not aired on an obscure channel in the middle of the day to be half-watched by housewives, it’s on Netflix. Then discovering it’s a huge hit. Hooray! Perhaps I’m not such a neurotic oddball after all. The show I’m referring to is Tidying up with Marie Kondo which sees the Japanese organising consultant and author help American families cull the clutter in their homes using her ‘KonMari’ method. In brief, families comb through their belongings room by room, keeping items that “spark joy” for them,
@thephuketnews
and thanking then letting go of those that don’t. Although a simple concept, it’s surprisingly difficult to define “spark joy” concisely. As the show demonstrates, it’s more of a sense, an intangible gut feeling that is indivual and doesn’t necessarily appeal to any logic. Marie encourages families to go through their items individually, hold each one firmly in both hands and observe their physical response. An item can be said to spark joy if it gives the person holding it a thrill. Marie offers a sort of euphoric squeal as her definition of this sensation. Feelings of heaviness, on the other hand, indicate that the item does not spark joy and does not have a place in the house. What sparks joy for me, and has done for people seemingly the world over, is Marie herself. She is the very essence of kawaii, impossibly petite and pure. Despite the language barrier (Marie communicates with families using an interpreter; I’d like to be a fly on the wall at that television executive meeting…), she endears herself to families before she’s crossed the threshold. She is so delicate I flinch every time she nears a hard surface or sharp corner,
Marie shares her tidying magic at Web Summit. Photo: Web Summit / Flickr. anxious she might burst like a bubble. Unlike brash, dramatic shows like Hoarders, where possessions graze the ceiling in each room and the floor is nowhere to be seen, there is no shock factor in Tidying up with Marie Kondo and Marie doesn’t shame families for either the clutter they’ve accumulated or their inability to part with items for no discernible reason other than “because”. That faded, threadbare band T-shirt you bought 20 years ago is allowed to stay. As a result, though, the before and after reveals are usually nothing to write home about, even with attempts to add drama by bathing the before shots in monochrome. However, it’s the human element that makes this show engaging. It’s seeing a couple, drifting apart with the pressures of full-time jobs and young children, opening a dusty box in the garage and re-discovering their wedding video.
It’s the recent widow donating her late husband’s clothes to charity, gaining closure and seeing a clearer. optimistic future for herself. When I welled up it certainly wasn’t over the rows of identically folded socks (although they were beautiful in their own way). Does the show have a second series in it? I’m not convinced. Each 35-minute episodes is regimented in its format: organise clothing; then books, documents, kitchen and bathroom miscellany; and then sentimental items. Viewers may gleam the occasional “bonus tip” but there’s only so far that can carry the show forward. This season should not be dismissed, though. Since it aired at the start of the year, the ‘Marie Kondo effect’ has seen charity/thrift shops fit to burst with donations and consumers thinking twice about their penchant for fast fashion. Not bad for a show that some critics have said is “just about tidying”.

The man that makes Kata rock
A meal with the CEO of Infinite Luxury and Kata Rocks, Richard Pope A MEAL WITH...
Baz Daniel baz_gunner2000@yahoo.com
S
itting poolside at the stunning Kata Rocks resort and villa development with Richard Pope overlooking Kata Beach and Boo Island, it’s hard not to feel rather overawed. This is, after all, a quintessential vision of tropical perfection with beautiful, white, luxurious villas standing tall upon a stunning rocky headland overlooking the Andaman Sea. Every facet of Kata Rocks breathes elegance and sophistication, so much so that a veritable procession of Vogue super-models with their retinue of photographers, stylists and paparazzi make the pilgrimage here to shoot the latest glossy spreads. Looking across the infinity pool I noticed that there was indeed a brace of such bikini-clad beauties being subjected to exactly this form of adoration. Richard Pope is the visionary who made this new Camelot happen and was involved in the most hands-on way with every facet of its conception, design, construction, marketing and
management. Kata Rocks has won more international property awards than any other single development worldwide, including Best Apartment in the World and Best Property Marketing, so you might expect the man behind all this to be rather intimidating. The reality is that you couldn’t meet a more charming and approachable guy than Richard. I sat down with him on a dazzling weekday morning just before the Kata Rocks fourth anniversary pool party as well as the Superyacht Rendezvous (KRSR) which is hosted and organised by the resort each year and brings the world’s glitterati to Phuket to play on their floating palaces. Richard was born into an entrepreneurial family and his father set him a fine example by turning hard work and creativity into a successful chain of UK pharmacies. After obtaining his bachelor’s in engineering and business, Richard applied his entrepreneurial flair to the burgeoning loft development property sector in London’s uber-trendy Notting Hill. By the age of 40 he was already able to retire to sail his yacht and drive his Aston Martin. But Richard’s kind of creative energy needs an outlet, and in 2006 while holidaying in Phuket he

saw the rocky headland between Kata and Kata Noi beaches which was to be the site of his next Camelot: Kata Rocks. Developing a high-end luxury resort anywhere in the Andaman region is not for the faint-hearted as a litany of failures, scandals and bankruptcies attest. So, what was Richard’s secret to building Kata Rocks into the worldclass super-luxury destination we were sitting in today? “Firstly, I believe we found the right location,” says Richard. “We are sitting within a five-hour flight of half the world’s population in the fastest developing sector of the globe. Thailand offers a fantastic value proposition, wrapped in a fascinating culture with friendly and welcoming people.” But developing Kata Rocks wasn’t all plain sailing. Richard continued, “We overcame major challenges during the development, eventually deciding to take all the integral components of the development in-house. We undertook a very hands-on approach to everything: design, build, architecture, plumbing wiring, marketing and branding. Everything! “That was a major undertaking, but we were able to assemble a superb team to expedite all this, and I’d say that the second key success factor was
this terrific team of loyal Thais and foreigners working together.” Knowing Richard, as I have come to through working with him on the branding and marketing of Kata Rocks, I would say that a third element of his success is his unbounded energy and optimism. With this in mind I asked him his opinion about Phuket’s future. “Many people are critical about obvious things like traffic and pollution making Phuket worse than it was, say, 20 years ago. But I think Phuket is different, rather than worse. For example, 20 years ago you couldn’t see the latest film in a multiplex cinema or visit world-class shopping malls and restaurants, let alone visit superyachts at KRSR. “So, I hope traffic and pollution are temporary penalties which have accompanied the rapid evolution of Phuket into a world-class tourism hub and which will be resolved in due course.” Richard’s umbrella brand for Kata Rocks and its planned expansion and future developments is named ‘Infinite Luxury’, which I think gives a perfect summation of Richard’s optimism and positivity about Phuket. His target audience are most certainly discriminating global sophisticates seeking the ultimate luxury, and the possibilities for Phuket to deliver exactly that are, in his view, simply infinite!

Earth, Wind & Fire Experience Enter a boogie wonderland at Cafe del Mar on Feb 8

t was 1982. After Al McKay left the group, legendary funk group Earth, Wind & Fire was on its last legs. Finally, in 1983, it was over. The band that had defined the modern sound of R&B music was done. All that was left was the legacy of the music that had sustained and nurtured a generation. Then, in 1990, the Earth, Wind & Fire icon, Al McKay – who was the “groove director” of the original band, who produced “Boogie Wonderland”, co-wrote “September” and was worldrenowned for his rhythm guitar chops – decided to put a band together from the spirit of the original group. They called themselves the “LA Allstars”. The group assembled former band members of Earth, Wind & Fire into a model of the original rhythm-sectiondriven group, organised around the all-important guitar work and music direction of McKay.
Over the years, the LA Allstars – and later the Al McKay Allstars – have featured a who’s who of the most influential musicians in R&B and funk. Built around legendary Earth, Wind & Fire guitarist Al McKay, the aptlynamed “Al McKay’s Earth, Wind & Fire Experience” reincarnates the spirit of the original – powerfully delivering hit after hit of the supergroup’s songs in the original keys and with the original feel. McKay’s group, the Al McKay Allstars, offers a stunning demonstration of the power of living, vital performance, upholding the high standard of live excellence that established the original Earth, Wind & Fire sound. Kombucha’s popularity draws health caution
F
Arusa Pisuthipan
orget low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diets, gluten-free foods and all things detox. These are diet bygones compared to a slightly-sparkling, gold-coloured fermented drink called kombucha that is now all the rage. In Thailand, kombucha has taken the town by storm. Online communities have been set up and started mushrooming to exchange ideas and even “scoby” – slimy, rubbery kombucha starter culture – among brewers. Kombucha even made its way into the country’s gastronomic circle where chefs and mixologists incorporated the beverage into their menus served at many fine-dining eateries. The New York Times predicted kombucha as one of the food trends of 2019 and that the fermented tea will show up in unexpected places like salad dressings. At times, kombucha is a show star in beauty merchandise. Many people brew and drink kombucha for its claimed medical benefits – from improving gut health and reducing risks of heart disease to providing antioxidants, keeping diabetes at bay,
helping with weight loss and even shielding against cancer. But nutrition expert Chalat Santivarangkna suggested that consumers should not yet buy these claims unless there are medical studies to back them up. “Kombucha brewing can make a good hobby. It can create a community. It can be fun. But do not expect it to be a cure-all drink,” said Chalat, lecturer and head of the Centre of Innovation and Reference on Food for Nutrition under Mahidol University’s Institute of Nutrition. Believed to have originated in China before making its way to Japan, Russia, Eastern Europe and America, kombucha has a theory behind its name. The name kombucha has been said to have come from a Korean doctor Kombu who treated Emperor Inyko of Japan with the drink, which means it has nothing to do with kombu seaweed which many people believe. In a nutshell, kombucha is a fermented tea. The original recipe is made by boiling black tea with sugar before leaving it to ferment. The fermentation could take two days up to two weeks. The end product is strained before consumption. During fermentation, scoby – which stands for symbiotic culture of
bacteria and yeast – forms. Usually round in shape and rubbery in texture, scoby is a valuable asset for kombucha makers as it hosts a variety of yeast and bacteria species that aid the next fermentation round. “There are now several variations of kombucha because if it’s just black tea, the taste isn’t so pleasant,” he added. “So brewers add various types of fruits. Some add ginger, honey and so forth to make it easier to drink and easier to sell. If you look at some kombucha drinks on the market, they contain very little kombucha. The rest is fruit juice.” Sounds pretty much like the famous multi-purposed bio-fermented liquid products made by Sorawan Sirisuntarin, aka Pa Cheng? Back in around 2010, Sorawan, now in her 70s, made her “super cure” liquid from fermented plants and food waste which was then claimed to cure ailments – even the eyes. Sorawan was arrested in 2010 for illegal production and false advertising. “I think the two fermentation processes are different,” said Chalat. “The fermentation in kombucha needs air flow and that’s why brewers put a straining cloth on top of the drink instead of keeping the lid on, making the yeasts and bacteria in kombucha easier to control.” Kombucha in Thailand has fast become another diet fad, said the nutrition expert, following the do-it-yourself trend, the rising popularity of probiotic-rich products and partly due to the recommendation by Jon Jandai, founder of Chiang Mai’s Pun Pun Centre for SelfReliance whose life philosophy involves sustainable living. “The drink has become so widely accepted in Thailand partly because of its huge popularity in the United States,” explained Chalat. In 2014, American consumers were reported to have bought nearly US$400 million worth of kombucha. American market research company MarketsandMarkets also reported back in 2016 that the kombucha market is “poised for huge growth by 2020, growing 25% each year.” But despite such a craze and claimed health benefits, Chalat said there is ac-
Home-brewed kombucha. Photo: Klara Avsenik / Unsplash. tually no scientific studies in humans to stand behind those promises. “Benefits of kombucha? The drink can be refreshing. But if asked about health gains, there is no research papers that support that. There are 13 studies but those were carried out in animals,” said Chalat, adding that although a study was conducted in India by a university student on the benefits of kombucha on humans, the research turned out to be falling short of comparative studies and thus weak. On the flip side, reports have shown a potential toxicity of kombucha in certain cases, Chalat said, especially those associated with the fermentation process and regular consumption among the sick. There have been reported cases of kidney failure and abnormal liver functions among patients who drank the fermented tea hoping to cure illnesses. “Kombucha is not recommended for detoxification. Neither should it be consumed as a cure for diseases because there is no research to prove it. “And for those who say kombucha contains this and that nutrients, I think it’s also hard to validate those claims because there are a number of kombucha variations these days. And if nutritional benefits are what you are looking for, why not go for fresh fruits and vegetables instead?” As with other fermented foods, making kombucha should be done in an extremely hygienic environment to reduce the risk of infection from bacteria. Acetic acid is also likely to cause an upset stomach or diarrhoea in some cases. “Kombucha causes no harm as a refreshment. But it’s not a cure.” Bangkok Post

Experience of a lifetime at BISP
Students step out of their comfort zones on school trips
I
David Berman
n the modern world, too many everyday tasks can be completed while sitting in a chair and pushing a few buttons. Although it makes life easy, it’s evident that there are many more skills today’s children need to learn. It’s very important that our young people do not limit themselves to a sedentary lifestyle, and at the British International School, Phuket (BISP) students are lucky to experience life to the fullest. While at the school, all students are provided with opportunities for a wide variety of experiences beyond the classroom, including the numerous school trips organised throughout the year. All students above Year 3 undertake overnight group trips such as: the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (IA) for older students; teambuilding excursions all over Southeast Asia; service opportunities in the local community; expeditions; and ski trips. The express aim of the school is to take children into a challenging yet safely supervised environment, well away from their normal comfort zone. This has become a vital aspect of the experiential education at the school and it’s safe to say that students invariably rise to the challenges they face.

The express aim of BISP is to take children into a challenging yet safely supervised environment, well away from their normal comfort zone. Photo: BISP. Most recently, the Year 5 students went on their residential trip to Khao Sok National Park where they took part in team-building activities, kayaking and hiking and spent a day out on the reservoir. For some students new to the school, this was their first time away from home. Similarly, the IA trips push students further not only physically but
mentally as well, requiring them to set up their own campsite and cook their own meals after completing the day’s physical activities of cycling, kayaking or sailing. When students return to school after these life-changing experiences, they feel a sense of accomplishment, even more so when not everything goes as planned. Dealing with the unex-
pected is crucial if we wish to prepare young people for the ‘real world’. Even something as basic as choosing a meal at a buffet without the guidance of a parent, or sleeping away from home and parents for a few nights, creates an environment in which students may mature and excel. To quote from BISP’s guiding statements: “Life is a constant struggle – a never-ending flow of options that require, indeed demand, a response. Young people need to be prepared for this.” Despite the technological innovations that are changing the social and global landscape, education for the 21st Century – perhaps more than ever – requires our young people to be creative, flexible and considerate of others. But, above all, if we wish our children to live meaningful lives, we must provide those experiential opportunities that will help them to mature and truly develop independent spirits. Champ Osaka ‘whitewashed’ Japan firm apologises to world number one for whitewashed ad TENNIS AFP
J
apanese noodle-maker Nissin apologised for an ‘anime’ advert featuring Naomi Osaka, the tennis star said after the firm’s portrayal of the half-Haitian player with pale skin sparked accusations of “whitewashing”. The cup noodle company, which sponsors the US Open women’s champion, found itself in hot water with its cartoon advert also featuring fellow tennis star Kei Nishikori, as the pale-skinned character bore scant resemblance to the 21-year-old Osaka.
Osaka, who has a Japanese mother, a Haitian father and was raised in the United States, has not commented publicly on the issue and did not let it hinder her game as she won a second consecutive Grand Slam title at the Australian Open last Saturday (Jan 26), becoming world number one in the process – the first Asian, male or female, to hold the top spot. Speaking at a press conference at the Australian Open Thursday, Osaka said the company had spoken to her after the controversy erupted. “I’ve talked to them, they’ve apologised,” she told reporters.

“I don’t think they did it on purpose to be, like, whitewashing or anything. But I definitely think that the next time they try to portray me...I feel like they should talk to me about it.” The adverts have already been pulled from circulation, Nissin Foods spokesman Daisuke Okabayashi told AFP. “We never had the intention to do what is known as ‘whitewashing’, but with this becoming an issue, we will pay more attention to respect for diversity in our PR activities,” he said. The firm had initially obtained agreement from Osaka via her representatives, the spokesman added. The advert sparked debate on social media, with one user writing: “Didn’t anyone question why her skin colour was so pale? Her identity is completely ignored.” Another Japanese Twitter user complained: “This isn’t Naomi Osaka. Isn’t this clearly whitewashing?” However, others noted Nishikori was also portrayed with lighter skin, which tends

to be the norm in “anime” cartoons. The real Nishikori “isn’t that light, eyes aren’t that round, and nose is wider. They are both drawn in anime style,” said one defender of the advert. Osaka has dual JapaneseAmerican citizenship and often replies to questions from Japan’s media in English, apologising for not knowing the appropriate word when
she speaks Japanese. Japan remains a fairly homogeneous country, and mixed-race children can often face prejudice, although attitudes among younger generations are changing. Osaka became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam last year after beating Serena Williams at the US Open. That match also sparked a cartoon/race controversy when
a caricature of Williams, who is black, appeared showing a butch and fat-lipped player jumping up and down on a broken racquet. The match was marked by heated exchanges between Williams and the umpire. Osaka and Williams were on a semi-final collision course at the Australian Open but the American coughed up a match point to lose to Karolina Pliskova.

Patong Pool League: Champs Bar rises to take its first victory POOL Jeroen Tak
T
he tenth round of the Patong Pool League (PPL) sponsored by Thailand Pool Tables and Genius 2 Garden and Restaurant & Tualek Whisky was played Thursday (Jan 24). Kiki Sports Bar was playing away at Kwan’s Birdie Club in Kathu. This promised to be an exciting match because both teams are playing for a top position in the league. Kiki’s top player, William, was absent but his substitute was none other than Caddy Shack’s bar owner Justin Morgan. I am sure he was on a mission to take some points away from the Birdie team and try to keep the top position for Caddy Shack who were not playing this week. Goh and Colin both playing for Kwan’s Birdie won their singles and doubles games. Colin mentioned that he sevenballed his opponent after he broke the rack and that he does not want to be called Pompui any more although has not lost

any weight. Kiki, Jack and Justin were also winning their singles and doubles games. Kiki Sports Bar was leading the match before the beer leg but Kwan’s Birdie won the beer leg in two sets and the match with a close 6-5 victory and thereby has become the new leader of the PPL. Natalie was playing at home against Genius. It was great fun and many beautiful

selfies were posted on the PPL FaceBook page and nobody thought about the scoreboard and the overall result of the match. Andy and Oh playing for Natalie were winning their singles and doubles games. So did Praw playing for Genius. It was a close race and the beer leg was won in three sets by Genius but the overall result was a 6-6 draw. Simon and Oil were playing at home against Martin
Swiss. Bruce, playing for Simon and Oil, was on his way to seven-ball Pom from Martin Swiss but missed an easy shot on the black ball. But Pom was determined and finished all her balls and the black to win the game. The beer leg was won in three sets by Martin Swiss who also won the evening with a 7-5 score. week and was still hungry for their first victory. However, Ting Tong started very wellm with Mick and Andy both winning their singles and doubles games. Champs bar came back with Wayne as well as Lee both winning their singles and doubles games. Then Nick, playing for Ting Tong, also won his single and doubles games. The beer leg would be decisive. Could Champs keep
their cool and win their first match of this season? They did win the beer leg and on the most difficult pool table to play in the PPL, booked their first 6-5 victory. Congratulations, Pete, Les King and team players – from now on we have to keep an eye on you. Happy End was playing at home against Red Light. This promised to be a close match. Gwen, Andy and Scott all playing for Red Light won their singles and doubles games. So did Mal, playing for Happy End. Mal was so excited with his new polo shirt from Happy End that he was also instrumental in the beer leg, which was won by Happy End in two sets. However, the victory this night went to Red Light with a 6-5 score. The 11th round of the Patong Pool League was to be played last night (Jan 31). People interested in playing, as well as visitors, are all welcome to attend at one of the 11 participating bars. Visit the Patong Friendly Pool League Facebook page for details.

Liverpool dish out new deals to sustain success FOOTBALL
AFP
L
iverpool are working to ensure this season’s Premier League title push is not a one-off as they lay the foundations for continued success after struggling in recent years to sustain a challenge. A decade ago the core of the team built by Rafa Benitez had been dismantled by the departures of Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres within 20 months. Five years ago, after the goals of Luis Suarez propelled Liverpool to the verge of the title, the Uruguayan packed his bags for Barcelona at the end of the season. Just a year ago Philippe Coutinho forced his way out of Anfield to join Suarez in Catalonia. After receiving a £142 million (B5.84 billion) transfer fee for the Brazilian, Liverpool bought goalkeeper Alisson Becker and dominant defender Virgil van Dijk. Now they are investing heavily in keeping together the squad they have assembled. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were joined by promising full-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold recently in signing extended deals, with eight players in total agreeing new contracts to 2023 or beyond in the past eight months. “The club gave us a fantastic opportunity to bring in outstanding players, to keep outstanding players. My job is to make sure we perform on the pitch” said Klopp after the raft of contract renewals.

Sadio Mane (left), Mohamed Salah (centre) and Roberto Firmino (right) have all signed new deals at Liverpool. Photo: AFP “Where will we be in two or three years? I have no idea but the age group is good. This season will not finish our development. “It doesn't look like we’ll lose any key player (and) we build a new training ground, another step in the future.” According to The Times, the contract renewals will cost the club a total of up to £200mn (B8.23bn) extra. “We want to write our names alongside the many great ones in the story of this club,” said Mane when penning his deal that runs until 2023. “Hopefully it’s the beginning of something special." K lopp’s leag ue leaders, who host Leicester on Wednesday, have a four-point cushion over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League but their lead could
be whittled down to a solitary point by the time they kick off, with Manchester City in action 24 hours earlier at Newcastle. Liverpool’s early FA Cup exit has given Klopp’s men the bonus of extra rest and rehabilitation after a gruelling festive schedule and before returning to Champions League action next month. They have made the most of their break since January 19 to jet off to Dubai for a warm weather training camp. “It's the best time in the year if you have a week like that and can train,” said Klopp. “We used these four days for that and that worked out pretty well. Of course, we have to see in the end what we can take from it.” The break has also eased an injury crisis in defence
with Dejan Lovren fit to return, while Alexander-Arnold is also nearing a comeback.

PATONG RISE FROM ASHES
Morgan shines as Patong CC make last ditch comeback to beat Misfits CRICKET
Jason Robertson
T
he Alan Cooke Cricket and Sports Facility (ACG) in Thalang, once again played host to the ASL 35 Over Cricket League, last Sunday (Jan 27). The week’s matchup between The Phuket Misfits and Patong CC had both teams looking to build on their opening round narrow victories over The Goan Panthers. The Misfits blunted the opening bowling attack of Patong. The score would tick on past the 56 mark before Patong would break through, as Delano Buchner would eventually get one of his lightning bolts through the defences of Jeremy Bootsy (30) to send the off-stump tumbling. Buchner (2-22) would pick up the second wicket in the same over as K Steve was caught in the slips
The flying bowler, Anthony Du Pont bowling to man of the match, Craig Morgan. Photo: Michael Way for a duck. Sameer Khan (1) would follow shortly after as he deflected the ball off his heel onto his stumps to give Ike Bekker his first wicket. K Ali showed intent from ball
one as he first swung and missed, before perfect contact with his second ball, sending a leg spinner over the fence. One more perfect swing would connect for K Ali (13) before
he would hole out to P Ledeboer, and, just like that, The Misfits were now reeling at 74 for 4. Captain M Rehman (31) had seen enough and strode to the wicket sending the first ball he faced over the fence for six. He played a beautiful cameo inning, including three sixes and a boundary before he was removed by opposing captain S Raju (2 for 12). Rehman would be the final resistance for the Misfits as they rued the fact that they left the destructive Rishi Sadarangani stranded without facing a ball as Tyler Whateley (3 for 12) came on and destroyed the tail-enders with some devastating bowling to end the innings at 146 all out. Patong, needing just over four runs per over to win, needed discipline and resilience from their top order. However, P Sami would end the fine run of form of regular
opener H Flowers (0) as he was clean bowled. Then P Sami would strike again as next to go would be Ike Bekker (2). The Misfits were not done with the destruction as they first had Ledeboer (1) run out by a direct hit from K Steve, then T Whateley (0) caught and bowled and finally F T Van Blerk (0) adjudged LBW for a double strike for A Du Pont. S Raju (23) played some delightful strokes in moving the Patong retort to 66 before he was dismissed LBW by M Sadarangani to bring up 66 for 6. J Robertson (25*) dispatched M Rehman for a maximum, which was Robertson’s only real contribution as it quickly became the C Morgan (75*) show with the southpaw manhandling every bowler that came at him taking the Patong side to a memorable win that at 10 for 5 had looked very unlikely.
