Surf’s up, save a life or two

T

he season of the lethal, surly surf has returned and with October knocking on the door the weather is exp ected to take a turn for the wetter, as rge waves become even more dangerous. That time of y ear is nearly up on us again when the winds that bring the heavy rain clouds also whip the waves along Phuket’ s west coast into a frenz y . W ith this introduction, regular readers of T he Phuket N ew s will already know what this editorial sp ace has been dedicated to this week: saving lives. As a medium of news rep orts of drowning deaths over the y ears, editors at T he Phuket N ew s have a p riz ed p erch from which to observe the social movements on the island with resp ect to such recurring issues. Of note with resp ect to this

one critical issue, what has become obvious is that while never has a “ green season” gone by without an exp at resident, a tourist or even a Thai losing their lives in the surf, the rep eated needless loss of life at our beaches, like the needless loss of life on our roads, seems to have no effect on the attitude of many p eop le on the island. I ronically , many foreigners like to p ost comments on such stories rep orting such deaths, noting that considering the lack of education and lack of common sense evident in the circumstances surrounding the deaths, only the inevitable hap p ened. I n addition to the lack of resp ect for the dead, this mindset only shows how such commenters have fallen victim to the same mental p redisp osition that they criticise. I n this, it seems what the

“ more educated” p eop le on the island have forgotten is that comp lacency is a killer. Y es, there are those belligerent tourists who ignore lifeguards’ warning, and the red no swimming ags. ut let’ s not confuse ignorance with arrogance. M any p eop le simp ly are not aware just how dangerous the surf at this time of y ear can be, as this week’ s needless death of three p eop le at the beaches. ( S ee story on p age 3) To this, T he Phuket N ew s today urges every one – not just lifeguards, but hotel workers and fellow beach-goers – to take up surf safety as a p ersonal resp onsibility . Tell any one who seems unaware of the lethal surf that they might be endangering their own lives and those of their own loved ones. I f we badger enough p eop le just bad enough, we might just save a few more lives.

Politics tied to blasts Police probe links behind Bangkok bombings BANGKOK POLI CE H AV E N OT RU LE D out a p olitical motive behind last month’ s B angkok bombings after a Thai susp ect was found to have links to two p olitically -motivated bombings in N onthaburi in 2010 and M in B uri last y ear. N ational p olice chief S omy ot Poomp unmuang said on M onday ( S ep t 28 ) p olice have been hunting Odd Pray oonwong, or Y ongy uth Pobkaew, one of 17 susp ects wanted in connection with last month’ s E rawan shrine and S athon p ier bombings. Police believe M r Odd, one of two Thai susp ects in the case, sup p lied bomb-making materials for the exp losions. The other Thai susp ect is W anna S uansan, who rented a room at the M aimuna Garden H ome ap artment in M in B uri for susp ects in the blasts. M r Odd is linked to a bomb blast that took p lace at S amarn M etta M ansion in N onthaburi’ s B ang B ua Thong district on Oct 5 , 2010, Pol Gen S omy ot said.

Erawan Shrine bombing prime suspect Adem Karadag (in yellow shirt) sits on a tuk-tuk during a re-enactment of the crime. Photo: Bangkok Post / Patipat Janthong The blast killed four p eop le, including S amai W ongsuwan, a red-shirt sup p orter, who is believed to have been the bomb-maker. M r Odd is also wanted under an arrest warrant in connection with another exp losion in M in B uri district on M arch 29 , last y ear, the p olice chief said. Two men on a motorcy cle

were killed last y ear in the M in B uri blast. They were allegedly carry ing p ip e bombs which accidentally went off. Police found five more pipe bombs in a M in B uri house they shared with other p eop le. Police said the p erson who rented this house is the same one involved in the S amarn M etta M ansion case. The susp ect is still at large.

Child slayer known for drugs use CHIANG MAI A M E N TALLY I LL M AN who allegedly hacked to death five boys and injured a pregnant woman in Chai Prakan district was a former drug addict, the local p olice chief said on M onday ( S ep t 28 ) . Pol M aj Gen M ontree S umboonnanon said 24-y ear-old Asap a S eewuawa, who lived next door and was related to the victims, was transferred from Chai Prakan hosp ital to N akhon Ping hosp ital in M ae Rim district on S unday night ( S ep t 27 ) to be treated for bleeding in the brain after he was assaulted by residents following the grisly a ttack. Two police officers were dep loy ed to guard the hosp ital to p revent relatives of the slain boys from retaliating. M r Asap a, the boy s and M rs Y ikor S ae J in – the lone survivor in the attack – were Lisor hilltribe natives living in the same village and all were related, Pol M aj Gen M ontree said. Paritat S ilp akij, acting director of S uang Prung hosp ital, said M rs Y ikor, who is eight months p regnant and sustained a deep hacking wound to her face and body , @thephuketnews

was now stable, as was her unborn child. B ut she was p ut under close observation as she was exp eriencing severe emotional trauma after losing three sons and two nep hews. B ang kok Post

“ The blasts in which M r Odd was involved were p olitically linked so a p olitical motive [ behind last month’ s exp losions] cannot be ruled out,” Pol Gen S omy ot said. “ The attacks may have been a collaboration between two group s who have the same objective and could gain mutual benefits from the attacks] . ”

The p olice chief said one of the key motives behind last month’ s exp losions was the authorities’ move to sup p ress a network smuggling U ighur migrants through Thailand to a third country . H owever, he insisted, the dep ortations of 109 U ighur migrants to China and more than 100 others to Turkey was “ unlikely ” to be the cause of the bombings, adding that the Thai government’ s move was in line with international law. Pol Gen S omy ot also noted that there was someone else behind the scenes who had ordered or hired the susp ects to carry o ut the bombings. M etrop olitan Police B ureau chief S rivara Ransibrahmanakul said M r Odd was earlier handed a susp ended one-y ear jail term for breaching the emergency decree during the 2010 red-shirt p rotests, adding he had also been arrested in connection with nine other cases. H owever, he added that it would be difficult to trace r dd as he has no identification card or official records. I t was unclear if he is still in the country . B ang kok Post

Firewall of fear, fury n

BANGKOK

A

ctivists camp aigning for internet freedom have slammed the government’ s recent move to develop a single internet gateway to exp and state control over online media. Last week, citiz ens learned of the government’ s intention to build a single gateway , after it ordered the M inistry of I nformation and Communication Technology ( M I CT) to take steps to channel all traffic in or out of Thailand. According to an army source, the single gateway will be imp lemented to control access to websites deemed inap p rop riate and monitor the in u of information from abroad. The N ational Council for Peace and Order ( N CPO) is concerned about the increasing number of p olitical messages convey ed online, criticising the government and defaming the monarchy , the source said. The p lan is designed to target websites with domains that are registered abroad,

a

which the Thai government cannot order closed down, the source added. Arthit S uriy awongkul, coordinator of the Thai N etiz ens N etwork, said internet gateway s are like international airp orts. They are doors connecting Thailand to the world, and all online traffic must pass through them, he exp lained. Thailand currently has nine gateway s, with p rivate I nternet S ervice Provider ( I S P) comp anies that act as gatekeep ers. I f the p lan goes through, the state-owned CAT Telecom enterp rise will be handed control of the single channel. B ut it is still unclear how the single gateway will work with the existing nine. The activist warned it would allow the state to p ossibly filter all online content available in Thailand. W hile the government is already cap able of regulating netiz ens’ access to information – by blacklisting certain websites or ordering temp orary shutdowns – reducing the number of gateway s to one will make its work easier, he added.

a n all

Netizens’ rights activists fear that the ICT Ministry’s standard page for attempting to access a blocked website will become a lot more common. I f they want to block certain domains, authorities currently need to seek court orders or issue formal letters asking I S Ps to follow through. The p rocess takes too long to effectively bar users from viewing the content. “ I f the single gateway is imp lemented, CAT Telecom will be able to block access by itself. I t will be faster and more efficient for them, r Arthit said. M eanwhile, I CT M inister

U ttama S ay anay a and government spo kesman S ansern K aewkamnerd denied claims the p lan would violate web users’ rights to information. B ut rights advocates continue to view the p lan as a way for the N CPO to control information in Thailand. Activists’ concerns originated in J uly 2014, when the military government ordered the creation of a p anel to monitor media content, including online p latforms.

n n a

M r Arthit said the p anel’ s work hit a barrier when tackling online information, due to websites’ encry p ted data, which the government cannot crack. J ittat F akcharoenp hol, a comp uter engineering p rofessor at K asetsart U niversity , say s the inability to read encry p ted information means authorities cannot spot the specific content they wish to wip e out. They must then shut down the whole domain. “ S uch a move would hardly go unnoticed, he said, referring to p revious attemp ts by the N CPO to block access to F acebook, sp arking a p ublic outcry . Last December, the Thai N etiz ens N etwork uncovered a letter from the M I CT, ordering exp erts to come up with way s to intercep t encry p ted information from internet users. The government may ap p ly tracking devices on internet gateway s to accomp lish that, M r J ittat exp lained. I f the state op erates its own gateway , it could do so without having to ask for the consent of I S P comp anies.

fil

n

“ I n either case, common users won’ t know their p rivate messages and information are being checked. I t’ s unclear whether the government already p ossesses such tools. B ut M r J ittat believed the M I CT or I S P comp anies emp loy exp ert engineers cap able of develop ing them. I f they succeed, it will lead to severe violation of users’ right to p rivacy , he argued. S ince last y ear’ s military coup , the crackdown on online content has become more severe, rights advocates argue. “ There is a climate of fear prevailing, said utchapakorn N ummueng, a rep resentative from the legal watchdog iLaw. M any websites have already been shut down. I ndividuals have also been arrested and detained for criticising the government or the monarchy on social media. S tate scrutiny p laced on internet p latforms leads to a situation where many do not dare to exp ress their views and limit their own freedom of exp ression, M r N utchap akorn added. Pass the Vegemite please, mum THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Chris Husted exeditor@classactmedia.co.th

News agencies went into a frenzy as the debate raged on whether or not Vegemite should be banned...

‘ Through the looking glass’ is a monthly column in which we will explore different cultural elements through various eyes around Phuket. If you have a suggestion or an idea please send it through to editor@classactmedia.co.th

I

t couldn’t be true. The Australian national sandwich spread Vegemite had just been blamed for providing a means for pent-up aboriginal youths in remote communities to make home brew, and further deepen the hole of fiendish societal ills those communities faced through alcohol abuse. Australia’s Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion initially exposed the tragic trend, describing Vegemite as a “precursor to misery” in many communities, where women were beaten and children neglected. Mr Scullion described the iconic food as a “precursor to misery”, and pointed out that children in some communities were too hung over to go to school after drinking moonshine made with the concentrated yeast extract, reported The Sunday Mail. News agencies went into a frenzy as the debate raged on whether or not Vegemite should be banned from Aboriginal “dry stations”, where alcohol had already been banned due to the scale of problems brought on by booze.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, criticised for many policies and now deposed from office, made his stance clear: “The last thing I want to see is a Vegemite watch going on, because Vegemite, quite properly, is for most people a reasonably nutritious spread on your morning toast or on your sandwiches.” Thankfully, days later, Vegemite manufacturer American conglomerate Mondelez International scientifically dismissed the possibility that “bathtubs of home brew” could be made using Vegemite. “The autolysis process and subsequent yeast processing in the manufacture of Vegemite kills the yeast,” explained Mondelez spokesperson, Sandra Dal Maso said in a statement. “As sugar and active yeast are two elements required in the brewing process, Vegemite cannot be fermented into alcohol,” she added. But by that time the news had spread: Australia’s indigenous people suffer greatly at the hands of alcohol abuse. According to a study by Scott Wilson, of the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council of South Australia, aboriginals suffer from a significantly higher rate of alcohol abuse than any other demographic in the ethnically diverse country. In short, indigenous Australians are up to eight times more

likely to die due to alcohol than their peers. The remote community at the centre of the Vegemite scare was on Mornington Island, in the Gulf of Carpentaria. That remote community is apparently no different. Senator Scullion said he was told of the problem there during a trip there in May. Dr Berry Zondag of the Junkuri Laka Wellesley Islands Aboriginal Law, Justice and Governance Association, told the BBC that “alcohol-management plans” in action at the community were pushing problem drinking underground. To get around the government’s booze ban, islanders instead turned to home brews. Sadly, and ironically, the Mornington Island community is one of 19 in Queensland where the state government has imposed alcohol restrictions on the grounds of improving people’s health. As alcohol can be made from just about any food containing sugar and the right type of yeast, Dr Zondag is calling for individual alcohol licences to be issued with strict behavioural conditions attached. What would be banned next, he asks: “Fruit juice? Sugar? Even Water? There are much more profound, serious questions”, he told the BBC. Meanwhile, John Boffa of the Northern Territory-based People’s Alcohol Action Coalition said that whatever solution was deemed appropriate for Mornington Island situation should not be considered a ‘final solution’. “We’re talking about an isolated problem in a couple of communities around a very large nation, and a nation where there is a very large number of Aboriginal communities, and every community is different,” he said.

Phuang Malai: Thai Floral Garlands SIRINYA’S WORLD -

Dr Sirinya Pakditawan pakditawan@googlemail.com

O

ne of the most beautiful and artful things in Thailand is the Phuang Malai (พวงมาลัย). This is the Thai traditional garland which is the most common of all the country’s floral creations. These traditional garlands range from simple to highly complex arrangements and are placed as offerings on shrines, temples or are given to special guests as a sign of respect. What is more, the Malai is also frequently used on auspicious occasions.

-

T h e T h a i g a rla n d s a re c re a te d b y

In the ‘Vine Malai’ the gar-

lands are arranged in a vine shape. A special Malai is the orchid one which means that only orchids are used to create the garland. In Thai culture, the Malai is commonly used as an offering, a gift or souvenir. Then there is Malai song chai (มาลัยสองชาย), this is when a traditional Thai garland is given to and draped around the neck of a person to emphasise the importance of that person. Finally, there is also the Malai chum rui (มาลัยชำาร่วย), which is a small garland given to people as a souvenir. Thus, Malai chum rui may be compared to the lei in Hawaiian culture. Today, the Malai may also be a fashionable accessory (though many Thai people disapprove of it). In my opinion, it is the most versatile, elaborate and amazing Thai art form. Yours, Sirinya

his “Benz” E-Class isn’t like any MercedesBenz I’ve ever driven before because it’s so E like Electric, H like Hybrid and BlueTEC like Diesel. Here we have the perfect marriage of a high-tech diesel engine and a compact electric motor providing effortless torque, stunning fuel economy, Greenpeace emissions levels and Mercedes-Benz prestige.

Design:

The architecture of the new E-Class displays a younger more dynamic yet elegant, classic Merc. The front end of the new E-Class has a more flowing aspect with the wedge-shaped bonnet merging into the radiator surrounded by the new LED headlamps as if cast in one piece. Sophisticated, yet sporty, powerful aesthetics and pure E-Class DNA. The side view boasts long flanks and the broad rear with horizontal LED tail lights add styling points like the sporty bumper integrated rectangular twin exhaust pipes. The cool 18-inch twin five-spoke alloys provide additional street cred. Our demo unit is the maximum loaded, range topper E300 BlueTEC Hybrid AMG Dynamic. From the moment you step in, you know you are in for a fine treat and a great ride. The opulent interior boasts premium Nappa upholstery, soft touch trim elements and elegant high-gloss black ash wood trim. On the centre of the dashboard a Cartier like square analogue clock, white face. A sign that you’re in a luxury motorcar. The coveted, ultra-premium Rolls Royce Ghost and Bentley GT also come with analogue dash-board timepieces, of course! The standard hightech features include a comprehensive multimedia and navigation system linked to a premium Harman Kardon Logic7 surround sound-system with 14 highperformance speakers. That’s private concert hall sound. More interior highlights; a panoramic sliding glass sun roof safety: nine airbags along with numerous safety features and lane departure assistance as standard make this E-Class a very safe vehicle.

Powertrain

The E300 BlueTec Hybrid’s power comes mainly from a 2.1 litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel that pumps out 204 horse power mated to an electric motor producing another 27 hp. Power is put to the wheels by a 7G-Tronic silky smooth transmission. Performance figures: 0-100 km/h in of 7.1 seconds. Top speed 242 km/h. Fuel consumption: 24 km/l. This beats the EcoCar 22 km/l rating. The vehicle’s carbon dioxide emission is 144 g/ km. The amazing range (fuel economy) of MercedesBenz E300 BlueTEC Hybrid was proven last year when British motoring editor Andrew Frankel drove the vehicle from Tangier in Morocco to Goodwood in the UK distance 1,968 km on one single tank or 80 liMercedes-Benz E300 BlueTEC Hybrid AMG Saloon Engine: 4-cylinder in-line 2.1 liter turbo diesel Power: 204hp Torque: 500Nm Electric motor power: 27hp Electric Motor torque: 280Nm Transmission: 7-speed automatic Average fuel consumption: 24 km/liter Top Speed: 242 km/h Price: B4.19 million (Estate variant, same price)

tres of diesel! Try Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok. No problem, there’ll be enough juice to carry you all the way to Chiang Mai.

Driving impressions

Start engine. OK. “D” for drive. But where’s the gear lever? On the centre console? No! Mercedes E-Class relocated the gear selector from the usual centre location to the steering column stalk. Voila! R-N-D and P at your fingertips. Also on the column the Formula-One type “manual change” gear shift paddles. On our Bangkok-Pattaya-Chanta-

buri-Trat test drive it proved to be a quiet, relaxed cruise, thanks to the combination of a four-pot BlueTEC diesel engine and the electric motor the drive. High efficiency motoring with plenty of power on tap when needed for swift and safe overtaking those (dead) slow vehicles hugging the right lane. When braking, the regenerative braking system feeds surplus energy to the battery. A fuel saving, battery charging Benz innovation. Mercedes-Benz E300 BlueTEC Hybrid AMG package combines perfectly the efficiencies of both a (bluets) diesel engine and hybrid electric motor providing stellar fuel economy, sustainability, safety and luxurious comfort.

AMG: Aufrecht Melcher Grossaspach is the tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz. The company was founded in 1967 by ex Mercedes-Benz engineer Hans-Werner Aufrecht and his business partner Erhard Melcher in the small German town named Grossaspach. Vegetarian like a rock star Chara Revett editor@classactmedia.co.th

I

t’s that time of year again, Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival is just around the corner. And by coincidence the world-famous event this year takes place in the middle of October, which happens to be World Vegetarian Awareness Month. In honour, celebration and awareness of the coinciding themes, Phuket’s Hard Rock Cafe has expanded its vegetarian offering, introducing dozens of delectible meatless options. The limited-time expanded veggie menu features a diverse, internationally-themed offering, inspired by the diverse culinary customs spanning the planet, encompassing the best of the American Southwest, Moraccan, Medertanean and Asian flavours. The Phuket News recently visited the Hard Rock Cafe in Patong for a tasting. To be honest, we weren’t really sure what to expect as you don’t usually associate Hard Rock with healthy food. Greeting us were General Manager Roberto Pettinau and Kitchen Manager Pitak Nammongkol, who had freshlyblended ultra-healthy juices to welcome us to the iconic establishment. My favourite was the concoction of beetroot, orange and ginger. You could taste every flavour complementing each other finely, especially that sharp little tang of ginger and orange. Some other fresh juices on the new menu include pear, cucumber and kale juice, and an apple and kale juice. “From this month and beyond we want to invite locals and tourists to stop in. Some of the items on the vegetarian menu are strictly vegan, and our staff are pleased to advise customers which ones contain egg or dairy,” said Roberto, adding, “We’ll still be serving favourites from our

regular menu too. Our aim is to be accommodating and provide many choices,” explained Roberto. Indeed, there are plenty of options on the new LT vegetarian menu, which features nine scrumptious dishes and three beverages to choose from. After being seated like rock stars between a framed Fender and tribute to Jimmy, we proceeded to sample a few of their meatless burgers. The first one on the plate was the Kefta Burger which consisted of a home made patty of patato, shitakes, portabellas, balsamic glaze, barley thyme and seasonings, topped with a sriracha hummus, arugula and tomato. I actually felt like I was eating a real burger, the patty exceptionally mouthwatering, rich in flavour. Next, we delved into the Black Bean Burger, which was seasoned with sriracha hummus, arugula and tomato. My colleague didn’t leave a crumb and highly recommends this one to those who like their bean protein. Otherwise consider a wrap, which was next up on our tasting sample. First, we embraced buffalo spiced fried cauliflower wrap, followed by a roasted squash and walnut pesto wrap. Both were absolutely amazing. The texture of the squash was so nice and soft, one could literally srpead

it on a piece of bread. And the crispy cauliflower goes down pleasently with a side of guacomole and jalepenos. My colleague, who’s American, says it might as well have been a burrito back home. Already starting to feel stuffed (like rock stars) we ended our tasting where one would typically begin, the salads. There was a pear salad and a roasted beetroot and vegetables with kale. Now honestly, I’m not a huge fan of beetroot, but today my tastebuds were particularly receptive to its rich burst of flavour finely infused with the baby spinach. Chef Pitak reveals the secret, “The beetroot is slow roasted for three hours so that it gets that caramelized flavour with the other ingredients... ” A must try, whether you’re vegetarian or not! Both salads were quite refreshing and leaving one feeling good and hearty. Chef Pitak explains that all of the ingredients are sourced locally, and as with all of the kitchen’s produce, undergo stringent quality assurance screening to comply with the high standards set forth by Hard Rock Headquarters. Both my colleague and I agree, Hard Rock sure can do health and heartily for the hungry at that! I highly recommend everyone to go and try Hard Rock Cafe

Phuket’s new vegetarian menu, on offer throughout the month. And bring your appetite! For more information, visit www.hardrock.com/phuket

he latest incarnation of a Phuketian beach club combines elements of calm and serenity, yet it is something wholly different. Contrary to what many believe, there are still many parts of Phuket that are relatively untouched despite being a popular holiday destination. This includes a quiet little corner on the north of the island, where Indigo Peal has launched its very own chic beach club restaurant. The team behind Indigo Peal injected some much-needed cool into a manmade beach just a few stones throw away from the idyllic five-star resort. For the perfect position to gaze at the Andaman Sea, head to Phuket’s west coast early evening just as the sun sets. Here you can enjoy a glorious barbecue buffet at Shore Thing from 7pm – 10pm along with a tasty bottle of wine or two.

The Phuket News recently paid a trip to the venue to sample the restaurant’s hot new buffet. Set on the man-made beach, the area is set up with a few tables and chairs underneath large umbrellas, giving the venue an intimate and romantic feel; the perfect place to relax and unwind with an evening cocktail. Once we were greeted by the restaurant’s warm and friendly staff, we were taken to our table where we had the option of looking through the sparkling cocktail menu. The buffet itself is located a few metres away, where guests can choose

he Phuket Andaman Hotelier trade show at Limelight Avenue in Phuket Town kicked off on September 17, with hundreds of trade booths on display and a busy programme of special events. Among the key events was T hai Iron Chef Chumpol Jangprai creating a new signature dish for the island to help put Phuket on the Unesco culinary map. The Phuket signature dish that Chef Chumpol created was the “7 color lobster Phuket Noodles (Mee)”. “The reason that I created this dish is because Phuket is well known for its Chinese-Thai heritage (Baba),” Chef Chupol told The Phuket News. “I combined this with the authenticity of local seafood from the beautiful sea to create the overall dish.” The dish is a combination of noodles, curry and seafood which highlights @thephuketnews

Phuket’s local traditions and taste. The secret of Phuket’s signature dish is a specially created curry sauce, combined with a curry paste, local herbs and spice, alongside the delicious lobster, then ser ved with Thai traditional noodles (Khanom Jeen).

from an intoxicating mix of fresh local seafood and meats such as beef and chicken. The chefs will then cook this to your desire at the live cooking station. We had a generous option of a baked potato, corn on the cob, and stir-fried vegetables to go on the side. The seafood selection was impeccable. From the lobster to the tender fish massaman curry to the tuna steak to the snapper, everything was consistently fresh and flavoursome. There is something magical about digging your toes into the soft sand merely steps from the sea as you crack open a lobster

tail and take a refreshing sip of your margarita served in an attractive tall martini glass. Then comes the best bit: the large salad buffet. Here you can choose from a lentil and vegetable salad; pasta salad; bruschetta; chargrilled vegetables; potato salad with crispy bacon; as well as your traditional salad trimmings. There was also an appetising selection of home-made fresh breads. The variety of salads were refreshing and a nice treat alongside the meaty buffet. Overall it’s clear that Shore Thing is making a concerted effort to separate itself from the competition by offering more of a romantic dinnertime entertainment venue and placing an emphasis on first-class food, drinks and service. Shore Thing is the eigth dining establishment to be added to a list of already stunning eatery options at the five-start resort. No matter where guests choose to dine, they won’t be left disappointed and Shore Thing adds a whole new dimension to the creative list of venues.

Revamping your daily work out

Sate-of-the-art training studio launches popular hot yoga programme Dalia Hilmi editor1@classactmedia.co.th

I

f you’re looking for an affordable, laid back, stylish venue to work out in, then look no further than Action Point Fitness Club in Rawai. This club, which has been open for around two years, is the perfect place to re-evaluate your health and fitness, whether you’re a long-term resident or looking for a quick and effective way to revamp your lifestyle. “We offer a great detox programme, cross-fit strength and condition training, weight training, squash, massages, and now, hot yoga,” Paul Welchar, CEO of the club, told The Phuket News in a recent interview. Members also have access to the rooftop’s aqua-aerobics pool, steam

room, ice-bath as well as one of the most exciting hot yoga salas around. Bikram Yoga is the latest class to be added to the list of activities one can partake in at the modernised health club. For anyone that may not know, Bikram Yoga is practiced in a room heated between 38 – 40 degrees Celsius. “It’s intense,” says Anthony McCullough, a licensed yoga instructor, who hails from Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. “The heat loosens up your muscles, which allows you to stretch further down your cord. The heat also increases

heart rate and blood flow circulation, so you sweat more, your skin looks nicer, cleaner and healthier. It’s like giving your body an oil change. “At the moment we are offering a beginner class, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before, or if you have a broken limb, or if you have diabetes for example, anyone can join in and attempt at least one of the classes. “It doesn’t ever get easier, you just get better at it. At the end of the 90 minutes, you just feel amazing. It releases all those endorphins. We hold postures between 10 and 60 seconds.” The yoga class is great for detox. It helps your kidneys and liver function better. According to Anthony, the class is also great for rehab following surgery, or if you simply want to lose weight. “It works every single part of your body,” explains Anthony. Anthony has been teaching for just over two years and has been practicing for even longer. Following a teaching programme in Los Angeles, California, Anthony started teaching all over the world. He now works full time at Action Point and has brought his solid knowledge and experience to the exciting programme. The club also has a restaurant and bar serving everything from raw and health foods through to Thai and Western cuisine. Paul comes from a developer background, and is now the only owner of the health club. Although he says he is not technically from a fitness background, he still maintains a healthy lifestyle and offers personal training. “We have a multitude of activities. We offer a beautiful sea view, access to a swimming pool and jacuzzi. “We have so much to offer in the whole complex. The quality of the equip-

ment is second to none. “People have the option of paying as they go depending on which class they would like to do,” Paul explains. Currently the club is offering a special promotion due to the fact it has recently kicked off the brand new hot yoga class. With a yoga membership, guests will have free access to the gym and swimming pool. There are also 12 boutique hotels rooms located only a few steps away. These are perfect for anyone looking to sign up to one of the programmes, such as the weight loss option where guests are offered an all-inclusive package, which includes a low-calorie based meal plan. With over 700 members, the club is growing fast. And with such a diverse and stimulating number of activities on offer, guests can be assured that they’re training in a state-of-the-art facility with the option of unwinding in a truly relaxing atmosphere. Whether you’re local, or flying in from half a world away, the Action Point family today can help anyone looking to change their life. For more information visit phuketactionpoint.asia

Shakespeare like never before! Joel Adams editor@classactmedia.co.th

W

illiam Shakespeare: how much do we, the members of the 21st century, really appreciate the plump fruit of Shakespeare’s productive loins? Come and find out. Join us at the Green Man on Saturday, October 17, at 6pm. Theatrix, in partnership with HeadStart International School, is launching Outta the Box Classics with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), a rollicking ride through all the works of the Bard in 97 minutes more or less. So don’t miss it! You can get tickets through The Phuket News at Ticket Master, at HeadStart International School, at the Green Man Pub itself, and at Oasis Ed. in Rawai, and they’re only B150. Seats are limited so don’t delay, buy your ticket today. I, Joel Adams, a fairly recent arrival on the island and a confessed addict to everything theatrical, felt there needed to be more good live theatre here. So when thinking about how to encourage that, I realised, ‘What better audience to start with than young people?’ Outta the Box Classics was born in my desire

Pop stars, world leaders rally to end poverty

S

ome of the biggest names in music and politics from Beyonce to European prime ministers rallied on September 26 in a concert aimed at mobilising action to eradicate extreme poverty. Before thousands of people in New York’s Central Park and a far greater audience on television, the Global Citizen Festival sought to use entertainment to broaden support for new United Nations development goals. Beyonce, playing just her second concert this year, was the top attraction for many fans who obtained tickets not by paying but by committing to activism ranging from writing letters to volunteering. Other performers included rock veterans Pearl Jam and Coldplay, fresh English pop sensation Ed Sheeran, socially conscious rapper Common and – in an effort to raise the profile of the festival in India – leading Bollywood singer Sunidhi Chauhan. Beyonce closed an energetic set by welcoming to the @thephuketnews

stage a surprise guest she hugged warmly – Michelle Obama. The US first lady encouraged the audience to use social media to campaign on behalf of the estimated 62 million girls worldwide who are not in school. “They deserve the same chances to get an education as my daughters and your daughters and all of our children,” she said. “And make no mistake about it – giving them that chance is at the core of our work to end global poverty.” The UN endorsed a goal of ending extreme poverty by 2030 – in part by focusing on opportunities for girls, an investment with sweeping consequences for families’ futures. Like many festivals, the concert thrived on musical surprises. Pearl Jam brought back to stage Beyonce for Bob Marley’s inspirational Redemption Song, which segued to a video of late anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela urging a fight against poverty. Beyonce put on a crowdrousing show of dance pop

with an emphasis on her feminist themes but performed an unlikely acoustic duet with Sheeran of Drunk in Love, which she usually sings with husband Jay Z. Pop st a rlet A r ia n a Grande joined Coldplay, while Common’s hard-charging hip-hop set merged into Every Breath You Take as a bearded Sting suddenly appeared. Taking the microphone in between pop sta rs, the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai dramatized the plight of girls who want to go to school. The 18-year-old Pakistani, who was shot in 2012 for defying a Taliban ban on education, said that the world did not lack money. “It is a book and a pen that can change the life of a child; it is not a gun.” Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio urged the world also to reach a deal on climate change, warning that rising temperatures and disasters risked making poverty all the more daunting. AFP

to give English-speaking students a taste of the classics in a fun and engaging way. We plan to present two or three plays a year that will be action-packed and interactive while still being educational. But don’t get scared off by the ‘educational’ part; theatre must be, above all, entertaining or we wouldn’t attend. And we think you are going to have the time of your life watching this wild and wacky show since we are having such a good time performing it. My goal is to make Shakespeare and other classics accessible and fun and to help young people get a taste for live theatre. Once you catch the theatre bug, there’s no getting rid of it; it will be a lasting and unparalleled joy and pleasure for you. We recommend the show for adults and kids, age nine and up. After the play we would love to meet you in the pub and restaurant where we can answer

questions and just get to know each other better. The play will be performed again on a larger scale around March, 2016, at the new HeadStart School, so if you miss it this time, you can catch it later. We are also open to invitations to perform this and other plays, including improv evenings, at your venue if you so desire. Write us, call us or talk to us about it. Class Act Media are proud sponsors of the event. For more information email theatrixphuket@gmail.com or call 093 6490066

Patong swing to victory in Outrigger T20

CRICKET David Thomas editor@classactmedia.co.th

P

atong Cricket Club emerged victors in a rain-affected Outrigger T20 League grand final played at the Alan Cooke Ground on Sunday (Sept 27). After finishing on top of the league this season, Patong CC defeated title holders Thalang CC by 5 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis system used for determining the winners in a reduced-overs match.

Patong captain Seemant Raju won the toss and decided to bat on a very damp and overcast morning. The Patong openers faced four balls, only to take shelter in the clubhouse due to a downpour. When they managed to restart the game, run scoring was difficult due to the slow outfield. The lack of run scoring resulted in the first wicket, a run out while the batsmen were looking to increase the run rate. With the going getting tough and Patong looking to set a decent total against the

dangerous Thalang side, the Ariel route was preferred, with the Patong batsman looking to hit over the top as much as possible. With a combination of lofty shots and opportunistic singles, Patong managed a total of 130 runs for 6 wickets. This total was always going to be competitive due to the wet conditions, but Thalang had proven match-winners in their team who were capable of reaching this total with ease. Disciplined bowling would be needed for Patong to win the match.

After the break, the Thalang openers were soon under pressure as they lost their first wicket with just 10 runs on the board. The dream start by Patong continued when the next two batsman were sent back to the clubhouse with only two more runs being added to the total. At 12 runs for 3 wickets after 3 overs, the 130-run target was looking a long way off for Thalang. At this point, the heavens opened and both teams headed for the shelter of the clubhouse, and both captains reaching for

After some frantic mopping up of the wicket, the teams took the field once more. Thalang, fully aware that they were behind on the run rate and if the game was abandoned due to rain, would lose, started at a fast pace, looking to take every single and attack at every opportunity. The Patong fielders rose to the challenge, running out two batsmen in quick succession. With the score at 53 for

5 wickets, the heavens opened again and this time, it was obvious that play could not continue. A spirited effort by the Thalang team to increase their run rate was unsuccessful, falling just 5 runs short on Duckworth-Lewis. Patong were crowned Outrigger T20 champions after a few seasons missing out in the finals. The regular 40-over cricket league will commence in December. For more information visit PhuketCricket.com.
