I

t’s been a week of changes among the top officials in Phuket. On Wednesday (October 1) the island’s new Governor, Nisit Jansomwong arrived, and the island also saw the installment of its new Navy chief, Rear Admiral Sayan Prasongsomriet.

In the next couple of days the

island’s new Police chief, Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit (see page 3) will also arrive. Officially he, too, took over on Wednesday.

The new Governor arrived by air at Phuket International Airport with his wife and their daughter, along with officials and media who escorted him to Phuket from Ratchaburi, his previous post as governor.

“Phuket already has a vision to be

a world-class [tourist] destination,” he told members of Phuket’s media.

“I have no special policy [yet] because Phuket already has a strategy, and I believe it is appropriate. I will just maintain it to make everything continue [along the same track],” “But I would ask, ‘Does Phuket have the ability to support huge amounts of tourism?’

he Phuket Marine Office (PMO) has published coordinates for the boundaries of the prohibited area of ocean into which no boats in Phuket may enter.

PMO Director Phuriphat Teerakulpisit announced in an order posted in his office and distributed to media, “To support the policy of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), in order to re-organise areas, boats may not enter or moor closer than 500 metres from the Royal Thai Naval Third Command area, in order to ensure the security of the Navy.”

The coordinates of the no-go area boundary around the Navy base are as follows: 07 48 22.0N, 098 24 16.0E; 07 48 08.0N, 098 24 08.5E; 07 48 16.5N, 098 23 22.3E; and 07 48 30.0N, 098 24 01.3E. There are also limits to where vessels may stop at the Deep Sea

He wants to see more people taking pride in Phuket. “The most important things is how to make all the people living here proud to be Phuket people and thinking about how to preserve and protect our province.

“Anyone who is not proud to be a Phuket person is just someone taking advantage of the place and then leaving,” he said.

told The Phuket News, “I’m here to be the president of the Phuket Red Cross Society. I’m looking forward to helping people who are suffering,” “Coming here is a pleasure for us,” she added, “We love the sand, the sea and everything in Phuket.”

On Wednesday morning, command of the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet Area Command was handed over by Vice Admiral Tharathon Khajitsuwan to his successor, Rear Admiral Sayan Prasongsomriet, who arrived on Tuesday (September 30).

ol Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit has been confirmed as Phuket’s new police chief.

Gen Patchara’s name had been widely bandied about as the most likely candidate to replace Maj Gen Ongart Piewruangnon, who was moved to an inactive post in June, and who retired on Wednesday (October 1).

Gen Patchara, 58, became a policeman on February 1, 1979. His first major step on the ladder to the top was when he became deputy superintendent at Lomsak Police Station in Petchaboon in 1997, followed by police superintendent at Tahtapo station in Nakhon Sawan the following year.

In 2007 he was transferred to Bangkok to take on the post of Deputy Commander of Metropolitan Police Division 4. The following year he was made acting Commander of Metropolitan Police Division

Gen Panya, Commissioner of Police Region 8 in Surat Thani, which oversees Phuket, moved upstairs to the post of Assistant CommissionerGeneral of the Royal Thai Police in Bangkok.

He was replaced by Maj Gen Decha Budnampeth, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau.

Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin, Commander of the Region 8 General Staff Division and the head of the current mafia investigations in Phuket, was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police Region 8.

Maj Gen Krajang Suwannarat, acting commander of Phuket Provincial Police, returned to his post as Region 8 Deputy Commissioner on Monday (September 29).

hailand’s new Minister of Transport has promised to support road projects in Phuket to resolve the island’s traffic problems.

But he has stressed that the projects must not negatively affect the landscape, must be environmentally-friendly, and must be designed mainly for the benefit of local people.

Air Chief Marshal Dr Prajin Juntong, who was appointed minister less than a month ago, arrived in Phuket on Sunday morning (September 28) with the ministry’s permanent secretary and other senior officials to learn about all the road projects proposed in order to find solutions and examine budgets.

A total of 12 points on the island were identified as having critical traffic problems: The Heroines monument intersection.

Rajabhat University intersection.

Tesco-Lotus Sam Kong intersection.

The T-junction in Sam Kong Darasamut School intersection (Central).

Naka T-junction (Wirat Hongsyok Rd).

Outgoing Governor Maitri Inthusut explained to the minister the biggest problem: “We have only one route, Thepkrasattri Rd, connecting the airport with the rest of Phuket. That causes traffic problems for people who want to get to the island’s tourist areas.”

Mr Maitri reported that the Darasamut School underpass will be completed on March 5 next year and the Tesco-Lotus Sam Kong underpass is expected to finish three months after that.

“The Bang Khu [north end of the bypass] and Chalong underpasses are now under

study for details and environmental implications, and budget for these is expected to be requested in the 2016-17 fiscal year. When all of the underpasses are complete, traffic will flow much better,” he explained.

“I am also trying to create other routes as alternatives for road users, using rural roads such as the Klong Koh Pee elevated road, and a road from the Phuket Mining Museum to Phra Phuket Kaew Rd,” said Maitri.

The Klong Koh Phee road is already under construction and about 30 per cent complete.

Proposed new roads are: From Muang Chaofah (near the Phuket Software Park) to Kathu; Running parallel to Thepkrasattri Rd from close to the new Mazda showroom on Route 4025 to road No 3030.

“A lot of projects have been push through by me for budgets in the past, and I am continuing to inspect locations by myself to get detailed information. If we get budget support, I will be happy,” he added.

Laughing, the minister said, “I may have to ask the boss to let you remain Phuket Governor for one more year, so that every project will be a success.”

Aiyanut Tinapai, governor of the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), briefed the meeting on the Patong Tunnel: “We have been studying the tunnel project for two years and we will submit our EIA [environmental impact assessment] to the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning in October.

We expect the tunnel to open to the public in 2020.

“It will reduce accident number on the dangerous hill and provide an evacuation route in the case of disasters,” he added.

Minister Prajin noted, “This project needs to get participa-

tion and agreement from local villagers.” The minister then tuned to the light rail project, noting that the plan calls for a travel time of just 30 minutes from the airport to Rawai.

“Please try to limit the speed of the train,” he said, “and reconsider where stations should be. We should avoid having one in the walking street area; any station should be at least 50 to 100 metres from a tourist attraction.

“Please also think about the power lines [for the light rail], they should not obscure the beautiful landscape of heritage Phuket, which is the selling point for us.

“You should all listen to what local people want, because they have spent their whole lives here. Building megamalls may not match Phuket’s selling point – its beautiful nature.

That is how most people visualise Phuket. The meeting also looked at other transport options such as the boat service connecting Phuket Airport with Patong, and extending Thailand’s main rail system to Tha Nun in Phang Nga, where passengers could change to the Phuket light rail system. thephuketnews

The victim told police he was on the motorcycle turning into Soi Pasak, near the Fam� ily Mart convenience store, when he saw two teenagers on a motorcycle staring at him.

“I recognized them – we had had an altercation be� fore – so I sped up but they chased after me and started shooting.”

Police took his statement and are now looking for the two suspects.

Mystery over body washed up at Surin

he badly decomposed body of a woman with her hands tied behind her back washed up on Surin Beach on Monday (September 29) has been sent to Surat Thani Hospital for further ex� amination in a bid to establish precise cause of death and, if possible, her identity.

Australian tourists fall from Phuket balcony THREE AUSTRALIANS had to be rushed to hospital in Patong on Tuesday (September 30) after horseplay on the balcony of their hotel room turned into horror.

The hotel called police and rescue workers at 8pm after the three fell from the third f loor of the Phuket Graceland Resort and Spa on Thaweewong Rd. The three, all aged 24, were named as Timothy Jean Cover, Timothy Paul Hanson and Richard Anthony Jones.

A hotel staff member said, “They were hanging out and drinking on the hotel balcony.

They were chatting loudly and teasing each other, pushing each other around, when, unexpectedly, all three fell off the balcony to the court yard.”

Mr Hansen and Mr Jones suffered light injuries but Mr Cover hit his head on landing, and had to be put on a respirator before being rushed to hospital.

Man rapes Russian Aussie stabbed fight in after offering lift inPatong A

Russian tourist was raped twice in Karon early on September 27 after she accepted a lift from a Thai man on his motorbike.

The 33-year-old woman, reporting the assault at about midday yesterday, admitted that she was drunk from being at a party until about 2am yesterday with boyfriend and other friends.

Lt Col Sophon Borrirak of Karon Police explained, “She decided to walk alone back to her hotel [the Duangjit Resort]. On the way she encountered a Thai man on a motorbike who stopped to talk with her.

“The man offered to take her to the hotel. But instead, he took her to his rented room in a soi opposite Krungthai optic in Karon,” he added.

“There, he tied her hands with and raped her. She was afraid that he might become violent, so she did not resist,” Col Sophon said. He raped her twice before taking her back to her hotel.

Somdech Srisai, 33, Nakhon Pathorm, accused of rape.

After she reported the rape to the police, they checked CCTV footage in Karon area and were able to indentify the rapist as Somdech Srisai, 33, from Nakhon Pathom.

“Police fou nd CCT V footage of him bringing the woman from Karon circle to his rented room,” Col Sophon said. “ So we waited for him at the building and arrested

him when he showed up at about 5:30pm.”

Police searched the room and seized four pieces of cloth ripped from a bed cover, a red polo shirt with white stripes, a pair of jeans, green underwear and the motorbike used to bring the victim to the rented room.

Somdech told the police, “At first I was just going to

take her to the hotel. But I saw she was very drunk, so I decided to take her to my room first so she could rest.

“Once we were in the room, [I saw] she was very pretty and I could not control my emotions,” he added.

“I tore strips from the bed cover and tied hers hand I raped her,” he explained, adding that he climaxed twice without using a condom.

“Then I took her back to the hotel,” he said.

Police charged him with rape and he accepted the charge, Col Sophon said.

A N AUST R A L I A N tourist was stabbed with a broken bottle on September 26 during a drunken argument with three Thai teenagers in Patong.

Arriving with rescue workers at the scene in front of the Baan Thai Beach Resort on Thaweewong Rd at 2pm, police found Dwayne David House, 23, lying on his back on the road with a stab wound below the left side of his rib.

A friend, also Australian, called on officers to come arrest three Thai boys standing nearby, which they did.

After questioning the two Australians, police only arrested one of the Thais, a 15-year-old, who was identified as having done the damage, and released the other two.

Mr House was taken to Patong Hospital for treatment.

Phuket meter taxis a good deal THE NEW METER TAXis have been in operation for most of September so the boys from Phuket News TV took their cameras along with them when they took a taxi from the Phuket International Airport to the Tesco Lotus/ Samkong intersection, just outside Phuket Town – the offices of Class Act Media.

Here is their report: “Before we caught a meter taxi the team checked the prices of the limousines for a “fixed price” for the same journey. In two cases we were quoted B800.

“The meter taxi was clean, the driver had a uniform and badge, there was paperwork exchanged between the taxi booking booth and the driver.

“On the way out of the airport all taxis have to check in with a booth near the exit, staffed by military personnel.

Mr Somkid, the driver (speaking through the Phuket News TV Thai camera-staff) was full of praise for the new arrangement and was happy that there had been a crackdown on the illegal taxis.

“The journey took just over 30 minutes, including the expected delays on the bypass road.

“So what was the final fare for the journey? B492 baht, plus a B100 airport levy (paid by all taxis).

“We rounded it out to B500 and gave the driver a B50 tip.”

hinese businessman Zhang Jian, aka Supachai Rujathon, 26, who became famous across Thailand recently when he donated B34 million – B30 million in cold cash – to Phuket’s Wat Jareonsamanakit, is wanted by the authorities in Malaysia.

The Malaysian newspaper, The Sun Daily reported in August that Zhang had opened an unlicensed business in that country, touting himself as the future richest man in the world.

Malaysia’s Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry secretary-general, Datuk Seri Alias Ahmed, told The Sun Daily, “The ministry will continue to keep a close watch on the company and will arrest its founder, Zhang Jian, the moment he shows up.”

He added, “Early last month, the ministry found YSLM [Yun Shu Mao], a company owned by the selfproclaimed Chinese millionaire, to be an illegal entity.”

But Piti Hussa, a senior YSLM member in Thailand told The Phuket News from

Bangkok on Wednesday (October 1), “The fact that he puts his own picture on every product, poster and sticker means he has nothing to hide and he also donates huge amounts of money to temples.”

People working with Mr Zhang can easily get money or luxury assets, Mr Piti said.

“Once when YSLM started in Thailand, there was a group of Thai members who went to see him in Malaysia and I heard that they got B100,000 each from him. He also gave away gold and cars to other members. I heard that three or four Thai people got BMWs.” He defined the work process as a “money game”. The products of the company are not the main focus; the focus is on shares in the company, which he said is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Each member, when he joins, has to buy 367 shares for B5,000 – or more shares.”

“Each member will own at least 367 shares, then they have to find more people to join the business.

“The members will get a bonus of 20 per cent, or B1,000, immediately when they can find a newcomer to invest.

“They will also get money from people further down the chain, who are brought in by the people they brought in.

“I just started working seriously with this company and I am already getting around 3,000 Yuan or around B30,000 a month.”

He believes that the business is not a massive Ponzi scheme because, he says, there

are products that the company is selling abroad. YSLM, he said, had opened permanent offices in places such as China, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Indonesia and India.

Mr Zhang’s appearance and his ordination as Phra Sookto, a monk at Wat Jareonsamanakit in Phuket caused disruption when a number of his followers, especially Chinese-speaking people from Malaysia visited him all day long.

Aparat, a temple board member, told The Phuket News,

“There were busloads of people coming to the temple, especially Chinese Malaysian. They not only visited the monk but also tried, through an interpreter, to get people at the wat to become YSLM members.

“In the morning when [Zhang Jian] went to collect alms, his followers, wearing shirts with his picture on them, always followed him in a sound truck blaring announcements about his B34 million donation.

“I think when Mr Zhang donated the money to the wat it was just for promotional purposes. Their business always focuses on money and riches and there are always pictures of Mr Zhang or his members with big stacks of money – just like when he gave the money to the temple,” she said.

With suspicion growing and reports that Mr Ziang is being sought in Malaysia, he has left Wat Jareonsamanakit. Mr Piti said that he is now staying in a temple in Bangkok, though the deputy abbot of the Phuket temple stressed that he had already quit being a monk.

“He had many visitors during the day and the abbot told him that it was not appropri-

ate. I think he may have got upset and decided to leave,” the deputy abbot said.

He explained that there were not many monks in the temple who got close to Mr Zhang as he speaks only Chinese and English and he himself does not know much about the young multi-millionaire.

But, he added, “During the time he was here, he had good discipline but the temple was always packed with his followers.

“He even had some followers staying in the temple to support him and help him for some activities such as collecting donations.”

He insisted that neither the abbot nor any of the monks in the temple knows the exact source of the B34 million and they do not know much about Mr Zhang.

housands gathered on Tuesday morning (September 30) to watch the street parade involving hundreds of mah song at the Jui Tui shrine in Phuket Town.

The event started around 5am, where the gods were invited to enter the mah song at the Jui Tui shrine on Ranong Rd and ended at Saphan Hin.

As they passed the Surin clock tower, many locals threw firecrackers to celebrate the gods.

The mah song walked through the parade with hundreds of firecrackers going off around them. Along the way, they prayed and offered gifts to the locals and tourists, which are believed to confer good luck on the recipients.

at Saphan Hin before walking back to Jui Tui shrine and ending around noon.

Also on Wednesday night (September 30), thousands of people gathered to watch the blade ladder ritual at Bang niew shrine in Saphan Hin. The mah song climbed up the ladder one by one and when they got to the top, they would throw out a bunch of yellow scarves with blessings on them.

THE FISHERIES DEPARTment in Krabi on Sunday mor ning (September 28) searched trawlers from Phuket that were fishing in a forbidden area close to Koh Sriboya.

Eleven crew, both Thai and Burmese, were arrested in possession of more than 200 kilograms of endangered marine species.

Led by Fisheries Department director Jareonchai Srisuwan, the officials boarded two boats, the Chaitakan 17 and Chaitakan 15, and seized the catches and the fishing equipment from the boats.

They questioned five Burmese and six Thai fishing crew, including the leader, Khempetch Chaisri, 51, from Roi Et. The officials said later that the fisherman all admitted they knew they were fishing in a banned area but said they took the risk of being caught because fish in this area are abundant.

Former beach vendors say goodbye to suicide victim at Patong Beach MORE THAN 200 FORMER sunbed and umbrella operators from Patong Beach gathered on September 27 to say goodbye to Jirasak Shairkhu, a former vice president of Patong Beach sunbed and umbrella club, who committed suicide after he lost his job.

At 3pm, beach workers from Kata and Karon, Rawai and Nai Harn gathered on the beach in front of Cabana Hotel to pay their condolences to Mr Jirasak who hung himself on September 22. He had been suffering from depression since he lost his job in the

beach clean-up.

The workers displayed Mr Jirasak’s portrait on a chair for mourners to lay flowers and say goodbye. Four monks said a prayer for the victim.

Police found a letter left at his estranged wife’s house addressed to the NCPO. It was a plea to let sunbed and umbrella operators return to the beach, to prevent anyone else from taking their own life.

Mr Jirasak explained how everybody had been working on the beach for over 40 years and was the only job they knew.

He said the income he received helped him to support more than 20 people in his family and now they are suffering as well.

Ms Panee Phiromrit, the victim’s mother said, “I knew my son was stressed over the ban of beach business operations, as well as the recent break up from his wife. I tried to talk to him and offer support. I never thought he would kill himself.”

More Mai Khao Beach restaurants demolished D-DAY FOR DEMOLITION of 19 illegal structures on Mai Khao Beach that encroached on Sirinat Marine National Park arrived on September 25.

OrBorTor Mai Khao President Sarawut Sisakookam and his staff teamed up with the Royal Thai Navy, the Royal Forestry Department and park officials, armed with crowbars and hammers and with an excavator to do the heavy lifting.

The owners of the 19 shops and restaurants had already been warned by the OrBorTor to remove their illegal structures.

Mr Sarawut said that officials will be able to clear the rubble in about a week.

fficials led by the soon-to-retire ViceGovernor Sommai Preechasilpa met on September 24 to discuss a coastal erosion protection plan for Surin Beach.

Engineer Pairoj Thesaam said that his department, Transport and Communication, had hired STS Engineering Consultants Co and Macro Consultants Co, to oversee the project once he receives the budget.

They will study the plan to build a seawall to prevent future coastal erosion, and also report on any environmental implications.

The consultants said there were five types of seawalls – sandbags, gabions (cages filled with rocks), revetment (sloping wall), vertical seawall and concrete stairs – all of which could serve the purpose.

Poll: Drive to battle booze gains few backers IN OUR RECENT POLL, “What do you think of Thailand’s looming tough stance on alcohol promotion?”, almost half – 49 per cent – of all respondents opted for the option: “Totally over-the-top, absurd and needless – outraged!”

The second largest group of respondents – 28 per cent – went for the slightly qualified: “A tad strict, but a good reminder to drink responsibly.”

A fair few – 12 per cent – shared the view that the proposals constituted: “Great news. Demon drink does Phuket no favours.”

And, somewhat surprisingly, given the fun-loving nature of this famously hedonistic island, a solid 4 per cent ticked the “Let’s go further and have a total alcohol ban” box.

So no real danger or possibility of a prohibition or temperance movement gathering pace here. But certainly a widely held view that the proposals are really a crackdown that isn’t really needed.

Grimly inevitable slow progress

he Koh Tao murders narrative is getting murkier rather than clearer with the passage of time. And its backdrop does not give much confidence for speedy closure.

About a dozen British tourist deaths, with foul play suspected or confirmed, have occurred in Thailand over the last five years. Nevertheless the globally famed “Land of Smiles” remains a massively popular tourist destination, especially for young Britons such as gap-year students.

Concerns nevertheless are mounting over the impact the murders will have on tourism, especially in light of the fact this year’s tourist arrivals figures show a significant dip from last year.

In an attempt to restore travellers’ confidence, the country’s tourism minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, suggested that visitors be dis-

Also the safety aspect; these vendors selling have no care for life as long as they make their money from sales.

I have seen them put in the sand on waters edge and a wave knocked a big box of rockets off which then fired into a seafood restaurant.

tributed with identification wristbands, a proposal that he has backtracked from after predictable outrage in the media of countries whose nationals are fond of holidaying here, and from closer to home as well.

Tagging tourists to prevent their untimely deaths is ominous on many levels.

Moreover, who would want to take a vacation in a country where visitors’ every move is monitored?

There have also been voices implying, if not explicitly, that the Koh Tao murder victims to some small degree brought their terrible deaths on themselves.

Indeed, all too often victims are put in a position of culpability, especially where alcohol is involved – as is so often the case here. But the reality is that holiday-makers, released from day-to-day work or study responsibilities, are apt to enjoy a drink amid the

paradisical setting that they have often made considerable efforts to reach.

Thus far, the investigation into the double murder has seemed farcical to Western observers and media. The Thai authorities do have their own ways of combating violent crime, but the longer this case drags on, the more unwelcome publicity Southern Thailand’s tourist industry will have to counter.

What has been revealing, in both the domestic and global media, is that exquisite Koh Tao has a dark underbelly, and the disproportionate influence and control is wielded by a small number of Thai families.

The Region 8 police may have to get a little firmer with their own compatriots. Another farcical chapter in this tragic narrative is not in the interests of anyone – except those privy to what actually happened on the night of September 15.

You know, I feel little sympathy for adults that are injured at this time of the year by fireworks - it’s their choice to participate in these events – and they fully understand what can happen when things go wrong.

But children are a different matter altogether. Every year

at this time, we see young children in the streets throwing and playing with them like they were toys, simply not understanding the risks.

And obviously, the same goes for their irresponsible parents. I’d like to see stores, such as Supercheap, banned from selling them to the general public – or at least to under-18s.

The Phuket Marine Office, Fisheries Department, Department of National Parks, Marine Police and the Thai Navy should use the GPS Tracking System (AIS) to monitor all fishing boats to stop illegal fishing in marine national parks and other pro-

hibited zones along the coast.

Also the TAT Thailand, the Marine Police, the Rangers from Marine National Parks should make the GPS Tracking System (AIS) to be compulsory on all professional transport boats working in the tourism industry such as dive boats on day dive trips or live-aboard dive trips, speedboats, big game fishing boats as it will increase the safety and locate easily any boat in danger to sink and to rescue crew and tourists.

Rangers from Marine National Park may use the AIS to monitor all tour and dive boats to know where they are inside the park boundary, to collect entry fees and avoid cheating by fraudsters.

Thai rail employee gets death for ghastly murder THE HUA HIN PROVINcial court has sentenced a railway employee to death for murder and aggravated rape of a young girl in July on a train heading to Bangkok, whose body was later found beside the railway track.

The court on Tuesday (September 30) found Wanchai Sangkhao guilty of several counts.

He was sentenced to death for murder, nine years in jail for raping a girl under 15, five years in prison for stealing while on public tranport vehicles at night, one year for hiding a body and six months for drug abuse.

Wanchai, 22, a sleepercar employee of the Railway of Thailand, confessed to raping on July 5 a 13-year-old girl, a Mathayom 2 student at Satrinonthaburi School, while she was asleep in a bunk of a carriage on the No.174 Nakhon Si Thammarat-Bangkok express train.

Prayuth going to Milan for Asia-Europe forum P

rime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha will be attending the 10th AsiaEurope Meeting (Asem) in Milan, Italy, from Oct 16-17.

A total of 51 leaders of Asian and European member states will attend, and Gen Prayut will explain Thai political developments at the meeting.

Talks at Asem will focus on economic issues, but climate change and the Ebola epidemic will also be on the table, Foreign Ministry permanent secretary Sihasak Phuangketkeow said.

Asem was officially established in 1996 at the first summit in Bangkok, Thailand and is an interregional forum.

The forum is considered by the parties involved to be a means of deepening ties between Asia and Europe at all levels, which is deemed necessary to achieve a more balanced political and economic world order.

‘Unwell’ Kim sends message to China STOUT NORTH KOREAN leader Kim Jong-Un, who has not been seen for nearly a month due to apparent health problems, sent a congratulatory message to China on its national day Wednesday (October 1), state media said.

Kim was last seen in public on September 3. A rare admission from North Korea that he was suffering “discomfort” has triggered frenzied speculation about his health and close scrutiny of any mention of the young leader in state media.

The three-paragraph message sent to Chinese President Xi Jinping marked the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Korean Central News

Agency (KCNA) reported.

Kim voiced his hopes for China’s future prosperity and the happiness of the Chinese people, KCNA said.

Kim took over the reins of power in North Korea following the death of his father Kim Jong-Il in December 2011.

He sent similar national day messages to the Chinese head of state in 2012 and 2013.

Recent state TV footage of Kim had shown him looking overweight and walking with a pronounced limp, which some analysts took to be a symptom of chronic gout.

Rumours about his health multiplied after Kim failed to attend a meeting of the North’s rubber-stamp Stalinist parliament last week.

Occupy Central co-founder Chan Kin-man told reporters it was inevitable the protests, which have already taken over several main roads and intersections, would grow if the government maintained its hardline stance.

JAPAN’S “SHINKANSEN” train, which led the world in super-fast rail transport technology, celebrated its 50th birthday Wednesday (October 1) with ceremonies hailing its contribution to the country’s post-war economy and its safety record.

A sleek, airplane-shaped N700A train left Platform 19 of Tokyo’s central station at 6:00 am, exactly 50 years since the launch of the service along the Pacific industrial belt between the capital and the western megacity of Osaka.

Shinkansen literally means “new trunk line”.

“The line has contributed to Japan’s economic, cultural and social development with the world’s best high-speed rail transport,” Koei Tsuge, president of JR Tokai which operates the key portion of the nationwide rail network, told a tape-cutting ceremony before the train’s departure.

The private Japan Railway Group (JR), which took over state-run Japanese National Railways in 1987, has emphasised nobody has been killed in a derailment or a collision involving shinkansen trains.

“Safety is a source of our pleasure. We wish to continue our operations with utmost care,” he declared as the train left the station in a shower of confetti, bound for Fukuoka – roughly twice as far as Osaka.

Similar ceremonies were held in Osaka and two other cities in between, Shizuoka and Nagoya.

In 1964, when Tokyo hosted the first Olympic Games in Asia, the train travelled at a top speed of 210 kilometres per hour, covering 515 kilometres between Tokyo and Osaka in four hours.

Now it connects the two cities in two hours and 25 minutes, running at 270 kph.

Shinichi Kamura, 64, boarded the first shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka on Wednesday, as he did 50 years ago as a student.

“I’ve booked the same seat, 9A of the number-six car,” he told state broadcaster NHK before the departure. “I was impressed back then as the train glided so smoothly that my cup of coffee stayed put without spilling. It felt like a dream come true.”

Trading guns for quality of life across Venezuela SEEK I NG TO SLASH the world’s second-highest murder rate, Venezuela launched a gun swap program Monday (September 29) asking citizens to exchange firearms for scholarships, medicine, free surgery or construction materials.

The South American country’s 30 million people own 15 million guns, both legal and illegal, according to a government estimate.

That has fueled violent crime and an annual homicide rate that has reached 53 per 100,000 inhabitants, the second-highest in the world after Honduras, according to the United Nations.

Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez Torres said the exchange program would last one year and was aimed at taking “a whole lot of weapons” out of civilian hands.

“Every gun that is removed from circulation means the likelihood of less violence, death, crime,” he told reporters.

THE EMPLOYEES COMPENsation Act (the “Act”) requires an employer with one employee or more to register employees (with the exception of certain categories of employees such as government officials and teachers at private schools) with the Employees Compensation Fund (the “Fund”) at the Social Security Office.

The purpose of the Fund is to compensate employees – or their estate – for lost wages in the event of the employee’s employment-related injury, illness, or death, as well as for the employee’s medical treatment and rehabilitation, or funeral costs.

Employers must contribute to the fund by the end of January of every year at rates that depend on the employer’s type of business and nature of the employee’s work.

The contribution rates range from 0.2 to 1 per cent of the employee’s total annual pay.

However, where an employee’s salary exceeds B240,000 a year, the base salary of that employee – for purposes of the requisite fund contribution calculation – is capped at B240,000.

If an employer fails to make a required contribution to the fund, the employer will have to pay the outstanding amount – as well as a penalty equal to 3 per cent of the unpaid

contribution per month of the deficiency.

An employee’s eligibility for payment of compensation benefits is determined by the criteria detailed under the Act and, if eligible, paid to the employee at rates prescribed by the Act, which depend largely on the seriousness of the case.

Usually, the compensation is paid monthly at the rate of 60 per cent of the employee’s monthly wages for a specific duration to an employee who is unable to work continuously for more than three days; or has lost an organ; or becomes disabled to the point where he or she cannot work; or dies.

Where medical treatment is required as a result of an employee’s work, then such an employee’s “actual and necessary” curative expenses will be paid for by the fund up to B45,000 for a “normal case” and up to B65,000 for a “serious injury”.

An employee may also be eligible to receive compensation for rehabilitation expenses, though not more than B20,000.

Note that exceptions apply to an employer’s obligations and an employee’s eligibility where it is the employee’s fault that he or she is injured.

VAT hike ‘next on tax agenda’

he first increase in valueadded tax (VAT) in more than a decade is expected next year, to 8 per cent, says Suwit Rojanavanich, a bond market adviser to the Public Debt Management Office.

VAT could then gradually increase further to the ceiling of 10 per cent, but the timing would have to be appropriate, he said.

The tax was introduced in 1992 at a rate of 10 per cent but immediately reduced to 7 per cent at the request of business operators who felt the rate was too high.

It was supposed to rise to 10 per cent in 1997, but the onset of the economic crisis prompted the government to leave the rate at 7 per cent, and successive governments have kept it at that level since then.

The National Council for Peace and Order earlier approved an extension of the 7 per cent rate for another fiscal year, to Sept 30, 2015, with the aim of smoothing domestic consumption, which has faltered since the second half of last year.

Mr Suwit expects the VAT hike will be pushed after the inheritance and gift tax, land and buildings tax and the excise tax base change take effect.

Tourist bookings for Koh Tao fall dramatically THE TOURISM COUNCIL of Thailand (TCT) says the murder of two British tourists on Koh Tao had caused bookings to fall dramatically in the short-term for this popular dive destination.

TCT president Piyamarn Techapaibul said tourism bookings to Koh Tao slowed down soon after news of the double murders broke in the international press.

“The incident should be taken as a warning that all relevant agencies need to be vigilant in providing a safe environment for visitors and tourists themselves need to be vigilant at all times to ensure their own safety,” she said.

The president added that the horrific murders of two young travellers would have a shortterm impact on the country’s tourism sector overall.

Authorities continue their investigation under considerable pressure from Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha.

According to a Dusit Poll released earlier this week, 84

per cent of 1,229 respondents said the case would have a very negative impact on the country’s tourism image.

Also, 83.2 per cent of those interviewed urged the authorities to reorganise regulations in tourist destinations, tighten safety and security measures and increase patrols by local police and volunteers.

CCTV has been a useful tool in the current investigation and there are calls for increased CCTV cover at all tourist destinations.

The poll showed that 80.5 per cent want authorities to enforce the law strictly, while 75.7 per cent said tourists should also take care of themselves and avoid risky areas, such as remote areas of beaches after dark.

In addition, 69.5 per cent suggested destinations needed to warn and educate visitors about the risks and also increase surveillance.

The poll was conducted between September 16 and 20.

“There’s an important issue to be discussed by the cabinet. The issue is a major step towards laying the foundation and beefing up the country’s competitiveness,” Mr Suwit said without elaborating further.

Regarding a capital gains tax, he said the Finance Ministry had no plans to impose one any time soon but that it could be considered in the future.

Apart from taxation, the Finance Ministry is considering how to boost per capita income in the long run to extricate the country from the middleincome trap.

ML Suravut Thongthaem, senior VP of Onyx Hospitality, said the statistics on foreign tourists should show clearly the vistors’ objectives – such as leisure, business, meetings relatives, health treatment, sports events, visits to fairs and participation MICE events.

He also suggested the government compile tourist data for individual areas and improve database software. Such details were key to investment decisions in not only the hotel sector but also office buildings, apartments and retail stores.

Without these details, investors could make wrong decisions, ML Suravut said.

Meanwhile, news reports that Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul wants identification wristbands to be distributed to tourists following the Koh Tao murders.

The agency quoted Ms Kobkarn as saying she had approached hotels over the idea of handing out wristbands to help identify tourists who get lost or get into trouble.

THE BIG LIST Fake History Don’t believe everything you hear. Some things get turned out of proportion. Other things, well .... they are just wildly inaccurate.

Let them eat cake: The phrase “let them eat cake” has become a phrase to signal the disconnect between aristocrats/the ruling class and pretty much everyone else. It is often attribtued to pre-decapitated Marie Antoinette, though the actual words were uttered JeanJacques Rousseau who used the phrase to describe the wife of King Louis XIV, the late Maria-Therese. Over the centuries, historical documents have proven that Antoinette was actually much more sympathetic to the impverished.

Delicious gravity: Despite what elementary schools have been teaching for years, famed scientist Isaac Newton did not suddenly develop the Universal Law of Gravitation after an apple fell on his head. Newton’s biographer, William Stukely, explained in his book Memoirs of Sir Isaac Newton’s Life that the scientist was simply questioning why an apple fell perpendicular to the ground in the first place.

“It was occasioned by the fall of an apple, as he sat in a contemplative mood,” Stukely wrote.

The lightbulb: Yes, Thomas Edison did create his own version of the lightbulb. Cricket altitude record set on ‘roof of Africa’ A group of eccentric international cricketers last Friday (September 27) set a new record for the highest-ever match with a lung-busting effort at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The teams, including England’s Ashes bowling legend Ashley Giles and South African icon Makhaya Ntini, the country’s first black Test player, trekked to the roof of Africa before dawn and played 10 overs each of a Twenty20 game before weather conditions stopped play.

The game was played at 5,730 metres, in the dusty and icy crater just below the dormant volcano’s 5,895-metre summit, a reporter said.

The standing record for the world’s highest game had been 5,165 metres, played in the Himalayas at Everest base camp in Nepal in 2009.

“It was such hard work breathing and running at this altitude but something like this only happens once in a lifetime,” said cricket fan and participant Steven Smith, 22, who was bowled out for a duck.

The summit of Kilimanjaro has half the level of oxygen than land at sea level, doubling the energy needed for the match.

Participants also ran the risk of acute mountain sickness and even potentially deadly pulmonary or cerebral oedema – the flooding of the lungs or brain.

A plastic track, stumps, bats, pads and plenty of spare balls were all hauled up by Tanzanian porters during a seven-day trek, and qualified umpires were on hand to ensure the game was played properly and eligible for the record.

The final score was a winning 82 for 5 for the ‘Gorillas’ team, led by England women’s vice-captain Heather Knight, against 64 for 9 for Giles’s ‘Rhinos’ team.

“It was tough running be-

tween the wickets but it was easy bowling Ashley Giles out! Fully worth coming all this way, with such an amazing feeling getting to the top, and – I hope – breaking a world record!” Knight said.

The game is expected to qualify as a new world record, as under Twenty20 rules a minimum of five overs per team constitutes a match.

Tanzanian mountain guide Mukuru Mugapablo, one of a handful of bewildered spectators, said he had seen nothing like it.

“I’ve seen football played on strange pitches, but nothing, nothing beats this game for

madness. Altitude up here is a serious issue, people really do get sick... this is a crazy thing to have witnessed on top of Kilimanjaro,” he laughed.

Players are raising funds for charities including Cancer Research and conservation charity Tusk Trust, which works to stem rampant poaching of elephants and other animals.

Funds raised will also go towards building Rwanda’s very first international cricket pitch.

The game is growing rapidly in popularity in the central African nation after being introduced by those who returned after fleeing genocide 20 years ago.

Beauty pageant gets makeover MISS UGANDA ORGANIsers have unveiled a major rebranding of the annual beauty pageant, trading the glamour of the catwalk for an army-sponsored agricultural boot camp.

This year’s crop of 20 finalists will swap perfecting their strut under bright stage lights for a stint at farming poultry and cattle as well as lessons in packaging farm produce, before the overall winner is crowned on October 25.

“Who would criticise Miss Uganda being on a tractor or wearing jungle boots or holding a spade?” said Kihura Nkuba of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), a Ugandan army programme aimed at boosting rural production which has partnered with the event organisers.

The competition, he asserted, was now “the most talked-about beauty contest in the world” because of the army partnership.

Brenda Nanyonjo, chief executive of Miss Uganda Ltd, said the idea was to steer more young women into agriculture, the biggest sector of

A CANADIAN HAS BEEN caught at the US-Canada border with 51 live turtles stuffed in his pants in what US authorities claimed was an elaborate smuggling operation.

The scheme was uncovered last month but was only revealed this week in US federal court documents cited in a Friday report (September 26) by the Toronto Globe and Mail.

According to the newspaper, Canadian border officials arrested Kai Xu as he tried to cross into Windsor, Ontario from Detroit, Michigan in August, and handed him over to US authorities.

“Xu was found to have 51 live turtles taped to his person,” a US official said in an affidavit.

Why some cars cost more in Thailand

uying a new car in Thailand is expensive.

Many expats would agree with that statement and are surprised by the cost. When you compare similar car makes and models with the European or American car market, it does seem like we’re paying over the odds.

Cars in Thailand basically fall into two categories; domestically produced cars and imported cars. As you may have read, Thailand is considered the Detroit of Southeast Asia and domestically manufactures around a million cars a year from brands such as Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet and several others.

Comparing the base-model, domestically-produced Ford Focus with a similar model in the UK and there’s very little difference in price – are both around B760,000 baht. The same can be said for the new Toyota Prius – B1.2 million. Admittedly the specifications for models produced in Thailand are usually lower than those from other regions (fewer airbags and less electronic extras, for example), but the difference in pricing is not absurd.

When comparing imported cars however, this is where we see our original statement start to bear truth. For example, the new Mini Cooper costs around B800,000 baht in the UK and a whopping B2.2 million for the same model in Thailand. It’s a similar story with the new BMW X5: B2.4 million baht in the UK and B6 million in Thailand. So why such a difference?

The answer is import duties and taxes. In order to protect the domestic auto industry, the government has levied high import duty and taxes on all imported cars. Thailand’s not alone with this approach: Malaysia, Singapore, India and China all impose similar excise duties on imported vehicles, some to an even greater extent.

Importing a new car to Thailand will currently cost between 187 and 328 per cent in import taxes depending upon the engine size and power. Cars with engines larger than 3,000cc or that produce more than 220 horsepower are taxed the most while engines smaller than 2,000cc and producing less than 220 horsepower are taxed the least.

Despite these very high taxes, there’s still a demand for imported cars and it has become standard practice for some manufacturers to break down their vehicles and import them in parts to be reassembled in Thailand by a local workforce. This is known in the industry as CKD – Completely Knocked Down. The alternative is CBU – Completely Built Up – meaning the vehicle is imported fully assembled, ready to drive once it reaches Thailand.

A CKD vehicle is imported as a knock-down kit which relies on a local

assembly plant. This creates local jobs and encourages foreign auto manufacturers to build plants in Thailand.

When compared with importing a fully assembled (CBU) vehicle, CKD vehicles are taxed 30 per cent less.

To receive even more tax preferences, some manufacturers use local parts such as Thai-made tyres, windows and headlights.

Going back to the BMW X5 we compared earlier and looking at the price of the same model imported in parts and assembled at BMW’s plant in Thailand, for a CKD model, the price is B4.6M and imported fully assembled (CBU), the price is B6M – a saving of around 23 per cent. So if the allure of a luxury imported car is enough to justify the price, there are some ways to soften the financial outlay.

The high taxation on imported cars in Thailand is not going to change anytime soon. However with the increasing investment into Thailand’s domestic auto industry and inturn the increased diversity of the brands, makes and models on offer locally, Thailand really isn’t a bad place for buying a new car.

ooking for an extreme activity in Phuket, we caught up with the “Phuket Airsoft Gun Club”, which includes some 200 members who get together regularly to shoot both paint ball and bb-guns.

Prapan Meeprankij, leader of group, remarked, “I've been a bbgun hobbyist in Phuket for many years. We united around this activity, which we really love. We're a good community for meeting up, networking and finding new friends from different organisations including hotels, government offices, schools and other companies.

Aside from meeting up for a shoot around, the group also help each other aquire the necessary equipment – bb-guns,

clothes, protective gear and combat boots.

“We help each other locate new and used equipment. Some purchase them in Phuket, others source them from Bangkok.”

Their Facebook page (see below) is their prime way to communicate.

Their main activities are held in the jungle field at the back of Rajaphat Phuket University, on Sundays; some buildings in the Thalang area on Mondays; and in the area near the Kwangtoong graveyard on Tuesdays. For paintball, they also regularly meet at PAC Phuket Paintball near Boat Plaza Phuket.

I

have a Russian friend in Phuket.

Actually, I have several, but the one I’m thinking of is Anton. Anton and I were out for a golden beverage not so long ago, and I was explaining how I was spending a lot of time these days cutting grass.

We have about 10 rai (4.5 acres) and in the rainy season some of the grass grows about an inch a day. So there’s a lot of cutting to do.

I’m not complaining. Actually, I quite like cutting grass. I have two machines.

One’s a really reliable 4-stroke Honda strimmer (weed whacker to our American cousins). It has interchangeable heads so you can cut soft grass using nylon string (and use less fuel), or put the steel blade on for the tough stuff.

Then for large areas with no trees or bushes, roots or termite mounds in the way, I have a fairly primitive mower. It has two motorbike wheels, a petrol engine (Honda again), a rubber drive belt and a horizontal spinning disk below

with two steel blades.

To be honest, I’m not keen on the bigger machine. It’s a bit of a blunt instrument. No finesse. It’s also heavy.

It weighs about 40 kilos and since it’s not self-propelled, you have to push it up hills and stop it from running away on down-slopes. On the plus side, it’s strong; it’ll crash straight through small fallen branches, reducing them to tiny splinters, it’ll strike sparks from tree roots, and it’ll gouge chunks out of termite hills.

But it’s crude. And when you’ve finished cutting with it, you still have to use the smaller machine to get into all the corners the big machine won’t reach.

Actually, you can reach into most of them but it’s a waste of time and effort, shoving it to and fro in tight spaces. The best use of the big machine is cutting big spirals in large open areas.

(If you’re contemplating buying one of these, a simple piece of advice: most of them are set up so that the blades, seen from above, spin clockwise. As a result, most of the cut grass comes out of the left side of the machine. Go round the area you’re cutting in a clockwise direction, starting at the perimeter and working your way in by cutting a spiral that gradually brings you to the centre. Don’t mow anticlockwise, or you’ll find the

I much prefer the smaller machine.

Once you’ve got the harness set up right, it sits very comfortably on your shoulders, and it weighs only about 7 kilos.

As with any tool, there’s a knack to using it, which you pickup with practice.

At first I kept gouging semicircular slices right through the grass and into the ground. The machine just seemed to dive all by itself. I’d miss bits, or cut some of the grass to half and inch and other parts to 2 inches. The lawn looked like a bad army haircut.

This doesn’t happen now. Now, I’m almost on autopilot. My eye judges what’s below the blade and communicates direct to my arm muscles, allowing my brain to wander where it will. Cutting the grass is a great time to think.

I explained this to Anton and he said, “You know that Tolstoy used to like cutting grass?” Count Lyev Nikolayevich Tolstoy? Author of War & Peace? Didn’t he have a gardener? “I expect he did,” said Anton, “but he enjoyed cutting grass.”

And Honda was not yet even a twinkle in the Emperor of Japan’s eye, so there were no strimmers in Tolstoy’s day. He used a scythe.

Naturally, I rode the information highway down to the Interweb to check this out. And I found the following note in the wonderful Wikipedia: “[Tolstoy and his wife Sonya] had thirteen children, five of whom died during childhood.

“The marriage was marked from the outset by sexual passion and emotional insensitivity when Tolstoy, on the eve of their marriage, gave her his diaries detailing his extensive sexual past and the fact that one of the serfs on his estate had borne him a son.”

So he was a busy fellow, and perhaps needed to go cut some grass to take his mind off his willie for a while.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

In fact, I wouldn’t dare try. Maybe I should see if I can buy a scythe. Wonder if Honda make ‘em?

All aboard for sporting future PIA welcomes new cohort as IB programme commences

T

he start of the 2014-2015 academic year has certainly been an exciting time at Phuket International Academy (PIA) and Thanyapura, with the launch of the fantastic new boarding facility and the commencement of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and the Elite Junior Sport Academy offering tennis, triathlon and swimming academies.

The excitement was heightened with a blessing ceremony, which was held at the boarding facility on Thursday, September 11, soon after which the boarding students were officially introduced to their new “home away from home”.

The opening of the boarding facility has been the next step in enhancing the growth of the Secondary School at PIA. This facility has allowed the broad range of opportunities afforded to PIA students to be accessible to even more students from all over the world, including the students who have enrolled in the new Thanyapura Elite Junior Sport Academy (EJSA) programme.

The focus on creating a safe and nurturing environment for PIA boarding students has been the top priority of the project. The newly appointed boarding teacher mentors, Hollie Murphy, Cath-

erine Polis and Gabe Hihira are fully committed to providing the support, care and mentorship that parents would expect from a top quality boarding programme.

Hollie, who is from Dublin, Ireland, has a post-graduate degree in teaching specializing in physical education, as well as, an accomplished background in sports, specifically athletics, basketball and handball. She has also played international rugby, representing the UAE in the Rugby 7s league, and not to mention a passion for boxing; she was drawn to Thailand to learn Muay Thai and enjoy new sporting opportunities.

Catherine is South African and has also been involved in sports her whole life representing Eastern Province, SA, in hockey, squash and swimming. She brings to the boarding programme solid experience in teaching swimming and boarding mentorship in Thailand and Korea.

Gabe grew up in New Zealand and Canada where he played almost every sport available to him. He is an avid sports lover, with almost twenty years of experience in coaching students, adults and professional athletes, as well as health and fitness. Over the past four years, in South Australia, Gabe has

personally mentored over 35 fitness athletes and led them to World, Australian and State Championships. He has also worked, for almost eight years, as a mentor and dorm supervisor with Mark Davis Basketball Camps for youth aged 6 to 18.

The new cohort of boarding students at PIA includes students from seven nationalities and between the ages of 13 and 17. One of the scholarship students in the Elite Junior Tennis Academy is Mattu Kamara, age 14, from Freetown, Sierra Leone. Mattu, who was living in Sierra Leone before moving to Phuket, heard about the scholarship programme for the Elite Junior Tennis Academy and decided to apply. Mattu says, “I wanted to come to Phuket because of the facilities, education (IB Programme) and the tennis opportunity. My ambition is to become a doctor and professional tennis player. I am so happy.”

Brett Izzo, age 17, a Thanyapura Elite Junior Triathlon Academy student, applied for a scholarship at Thanyapura and PIA after he learned that Chris “Macca” Mc Cormack is the CEO of Thanyapura and realized the opportunity that this presented to improve his potential in Triathlon. Brett is a very talented international triathlon competitor. He is

American and was living in Singapore when he made the decision to move to Phuket. Brett says, “I chose PIA because of the climate and the sporting opportunities it offers. I knew the school would be good but the sports facilities swayed my choice; and the opportunity to train with Macca. Macca is my idol; and Ben Hammond, the Triathlon coach.”

Brett is enjoying his Thanyapura EJSA experience with his new PIA classmate in Grade 11 (IB Diploma Programme), Samuel O’Shea. Samuel is originally from the UK but has been living abroad since he was four years old.

Before moving to Phuket to join the Elite Junior Triathlon Academy, Samuel was schooling in Dubai for four years. After reading about Thanyapura online and having learnt about the training facility and school, Samuel decided to apply.

He says, “I’ve come mainly for the training. My focus is triathlon. I want to race pro and just compete in triathlons all over the world. I want to be in a situation that I can do this, and also have a good education to fall back on.” Samuel says about the demands of the IB Diploma Programme and training, “It’s going well. The school work is manageable at the moment. The training is as good as it can be.”

F

ondue is such a common cuisine term these days, used to refer to any one of a number of dishes in Italy, France, America or even China. But Roger that Mr Federer, all these variations are only spin-offs of the original version, from the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

And just as there are many variations, there are also many connotations associated with the Swiss delight.

Some will tell you it’s a posh skiing snack, or a hi-society, alcohol-fueled social-cohesion exercise, while others insist it’s just a traditional poor family, fourcourse meal. And just so we’re clear, I’m

not talking about melted chocolate, stew or beef soup, but rather, the pillars of traditional Southern European cuisine: wine, bread and cheese.

Having never had the privilege of a proper Swiss Fondue, I was quite curious. Upon querying the Swiss executives at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket – Executive Chef, Chef Roland Kaiser and GM Hansruedi Frutiger – at this year’s Swiss National Day celebrations, they insisted that I join them for a Fondue, as the best way to get a feel for what fondue is really all about.

Aside from its traceable roots in ancient Greek times or in 17th Century Switzerland, most Swiss attribute the modern day version’s home to the Alpine foothills town of Gruyères, in the canton of Fribourg. In the old days, when winter directed one’s dining habits, the freezing

weather made cheese too hard and bread too stale to eat as is. Enter the fire pot, and the resulting bread dip, which was ultimately declared a national dish by the Swiss Cheese Union in 1930.

“It’s usually eaten in a cold and snowy area, up in the alps, among family and friends, old and new. You sit around the fire, and have an appetizer of a salad and maybe some dried Swiss beef to nibble on with a glass of wine,” explains Hansruedi.

A mix of cheeses, usually Gruyère and Emmenthaler (the latter being the stereotypical, perforated “Swiss cheese”) are thrown in a ceramic pot called a caquelon, along with white wine, garlic, salt and pepper, slowly stir-cooked to achieve the signature creamy texture.

This creamy mixture is used as a dip for bread or young potatoes.

But the consumption experience is much more cultured than simply dipping and dunking, Hans notes.

“One game we play is that if you lose your piece of bread or potato in the cheese, you have to pay for a round of drinks. Because it’s hot and creamy, it’s really hard to recover your piece of bread or potato once you lose it in there.”

What about the ideal complementary fondu drink?

“Absolutely no water whatsoever, otherwise the cheese will become a lump in your stomach,” he says.

Instead, preferred drinks include white wine or a fine whiskey or schnapps, if not a strategically aged pear or potato juice – a recipe guaranteeing a groggy and disastrous morning after?

“Not necessarily, if you cheat and water down your schnapps glass, then the affect in the morning will be reduced,” he laughs. “It’s good to have a hot pot of green tea on the burner too.”

As for the bread, Chef Roland explains that slightly hard bread is preferred over fresh bread.

“The bread should be a little hard,

about two days old is ideal, because softer bread is more prone to break up and fall off in the cheese,” he says.

The chef confirms that it was indeed a poor man’s dinner.

“When you didn’t have much money, but a lot of cheese and old bread, this proved to be a good solution for the poor family. They’d put all their cheeses and leftovers into the pot … Nowadays, it’s one of the main national dishes, and if you go up to the mountains in Switzerland, and don’t try the fondue there, then you haven’t been to Switzerland.”

And yes, it is indeed a popular snack in between the slopes, and overall an ideal warm meal for everyone to warm up in the cold Swiss winter. But it’s much more than just a meal, as I would learn in my inaugural fondue on tropical Phuket’s west coast.

“It’s very much a social gathering, a social event like we’re having here,” explains Roland. “The pot is meant to start and go. You don’t have to eat it in a set time. You can start [the fire] and get it stirring when you want to eat, and stop it when you don’t. It’s ongoing, and in between, there is lots of chattering, drinking, dancing … The kids will usually have a separate bowl, without wine.”

Finally, two caquelons were brought out to warm, and the festivities were soon underway. I tried a few potatoes, but I personally preferred the bread.

Softened in fondue, with just a tid-bit unexposed dry crust seemed to be the right texture to please my pallet.

And the cheese, so rich and flavorful, put to shame the bland, dripping American nacho cheese I had been so accustomed to.

Like a true chef, Roland would not reveal his secret ingredients, but I was content all the same. As for the rest of night, I wish I could give you more details, but honestly I don’t remember; everything started to get vague after my third dropped piece of bread. Something about that fermented pear juice, I’d say.

A TIMELESS SOCIAL AFFAIR: From its roots in the Swiss Alps, where poor families had little more than some wine, hard cheese and bread to make a warm winter meal, to the modern day of ski trips and social gatherings with friends and family, fondue is not just a dish, but a great opportunity to enjoy the company of good people, whether in Switzerland, or even in Phuket.

A

fter stints in Bali and Malaysia, we finally arrived in Phuket. The commute down to Patong Beach from the airport was a lot longer than we expected. The flight from Kuala Lumpur was over in the blink of an eye, but the head and tail ends of the voyage were a little tedious. It didn’t take us long to be the subjects of good advertising and find a hotel called Cheap Rooms.

After Taman Negara’s impeccable plumbing and fan, anything looked good. Cheap Rooms was cheap as promised, but delivered on value as well: prime location just far enough off the infamous party strip, super spacious and nippy cold room, WiFi, private bathroom and a mini fridge stocked with water.

And to embellish an already-perfect set up, there was a giant Tesco in a decked-out mall just 100m due south, with veggie- and fruit-licious eats and other less healthful treats. You can’t imagine the gift of a fully loaded grocery store with a deli section – the underrated gift of actually knowing what you’re putting through your intestines.

I hadn’t heard great things about Phuket Town itself, but Patong beach sounded like yet another hotspot for tourists and ex-pats (we don’t get sick of these, shamefully). We only had a few days here, but it may have been for the best, the pesky hustlers and vendors that hassled us nonstop in Kuta got the memo that we were off to Patong.

In many ways, Patong was like Kuta [as in the beach destination in

Phang Nga Bay is home to thousands of islands and rock formations that are worth seeing, even if you have to go with a herd of tourists to experience them. @thephuketnews

Indonesia]: a lively surf town that knows no hours or traffic signals and just screams “eat, drink, spend and be merry!” And so we did. However unlike Kuta, where we were hassled to buy “transport”, Viagra and mushrooms, the majority of the street marketing team in Patong consisted of ladyboys pushing Ping Pong show tickets.

These shows are far from what I originally pictured of two athletes in short shorts and sweat bands exchanging a ping pong ball over a net. What’s the next level up from R-rated? Oh right, just flat-out disgusting. Not to insult the professions of what are probably broken but goodhearted women, but all that jazz ain’t for me…and luckily it ain’t for travel partner, Nick either.

We found other activities on that main strip, only about a third of the bars and clubs were strip clubs. What’s nice is that it’s a pedestrian only path, and all of the bars have similar prices and similar atmospheres. The possibilities are endless.

We met up with a Calgarian I met at Cx hostel in Kuta, who was also in the area. He knew the area pretty well and took us to a pool-house and some horribly covered live music. At least the spirit was there. Nick and I took it fairly easy the first night, with an organized island tour planned for early the next morning.

The tour was a “herd the foreigners like cattle” kind of thing, but it was a nice a change from having to plan everything ourselves.

We did a boat tour through the islands, making a pronounced stop on “James Bond Island” where a portion of The Man with the Golden Gun was filmed. We also did a few loops of cav-

ernous tunnels via inflatable canoes, one of which was a thrill-and-a-half getting caught in a downpour in the lagoon on the other side.

The rock formations of the thousands of islands are something else, it’s fascinating to think of how they came to be. It was a bit of a grey day, but the sun politely made an appearance towards the end of the day to brighten up the turquoise water.

The boat had an elaborate lunch buffet planned for us to top things off, and we had some free time to swim before heading back through the zigzag of islands, seemingly thousands of them.

As I had mentioned, our cheap room at Cheap Rooms was so far unmatched for square footage. We were even able to slip in a workout. And turn our predrink into a work-out drinking game.

Typical. It transgressed to a trivia

game (from time to time interrupted by a routine cockroach hunt) and unfortunately we got so caught up so that 2am rolled around and we hadn’t left the room yet. That’s what happens when you have too nice of a place. So we never made it out to that night, all to say, it was for the best – the next day promised onee heck of a bus (five hours) and ferry ride (two hours) to Koh Phangan.

It was a bit of a rough one, I think I’ll handle the preparations differently next time, but we certainly weren’t the most mangled ones on the minibus … us young folk are all still learning.

Native son of Germany’s famed Black Forest at home in Phuket

T

obias Lauinger is the General Manager of Black Forest Wine Distribution, Phuket. And on the occasion of German Unity Day, he shared some of his views with us, on both his homeland and his life as a German living in Thailand.

Where do you come from in Germany; how did you come to live in Phuket and how long have you been here?

I was born in the Black Forest Area, which is near France and Switzerland. I spent much of my youth in Munich – one of the most beautiful cities in Germany.

Working in the automotive industry for a while on some consultancy projects brought me to Phang Nga, north of Phuket. Later, working with a multinational hotel chain opened the door to the world of wine and beverages.

What are you favourite places on the island and why?

I like the variety of the Island and all that Phuket has to offer. As I like nature Phuket is a real paradise. I enjoy cycling in Pa Khlok on the east coast as well as a long walk on endless Layan Beach.

Being offshore with good friends in Phuket amazing marine surroundings is always a highlight. When I am coming back from a journey and landing at Phuket’s airport overlooking all the scenery of Phng Nga Bay I know Phuket is one of the most attractive places to make yourself a life.

I appreciate all the different cuisines to be found in Phuket, whether it’s a casual seafood lunch in Ao Yon by the beach or a coffee break in Phuket Old Town with its Sino-Portuguese architecture.

Going for a walk on Thalang Rd with all the odours of Chinese and European herbs is always inspiring. Of course the beaches are still unique- all of those in their own way. My favorite is the pristine Banana Beach, a world class spot,

spired anywhere else in this world. If I miss some German ‘folklore’ I go to Rawai or Kamala to enjoy a Schnitzel in one of the little German restaurants there, while watching the Bundesliga.

Talking to some of my German-speaking friends on the island always gives a bit the feeling of being “home away from home”.

How will you be celebrating October 3 this year?

I am celebrating ate the invitation of the German Embassy in Bangkok with some 100 Germans doing business in Thailand. The day itself doesn’t mean too much to me. However, I retain wonderful memories of reunification 25 years ago. They are as clear as if they have happened yesterday.

This was a big peace of history which I joined on television as a teenager.

What advice would you give to German tourists visiting Phuket?

The most important advice I can give is to be responsible and respectful. The traffic can be a bit different than at your hometown maybe. When on a motorbike wear a helmet – always.

A personal recommendation to holidaymakers in Phuket is to get off the beaten track. Phuket has a lot to offer in terms of culture, natives, beach and resort lifestyle, cuisines and so much more.

The local attitude and the Thai culture,

influenced significantly by Buddhism, make Phuket a very tranquil and safe place to travel.

What advice would you give Thai tourists visiting your part of Germany?

Since I have lived in the tropics for many years I would recommend a visit to the South of Germany, even in the cold winter time. Hiking in the snow or even going skiing is something to keep the best memories of. I like the different cuisines in the area with some French and Austrian fusion. Go to the local places and don’t forget to watch Bayern Munich play a soccer match!

Tell us about your role in both Phuket’s German and international communities.

In my position as a wine distributor I am dealing with more than 30 different nationalities, meaning cultural backgrounds, which I adore. I learn a lot from all these different people whom I meet on a daily basis. One of the remakable points to make your life in Phuket is enjoying it as a melting pot of cultures and nationalities.

What makes you proudest to be an German national on October 3?

The day itself doesn’t really mean too much to me. What impresses me a lot indeed is the fact how the German economy stood up to all these ups and downs in global economics. In particular, the sustainability of the reunification in the difficult times of the 90s is unbelievable.

Two totally different political systems and mentalities got reunited. This is something to be proud of maybe. I also see clearly the conservative yet innovation-driven way of German management. A great example is the German car industry – one of the best around the globe.

What are you thoughts on the Germany’s remarkable success in this year’s World Cup? I had the feeling that the time had come for the German national team after all the semi-finals in previous years.

The story of the success story might be a principle I invented in my company as well. The star is the team. Some have Ronaldo, some have Messi. The Germans played as a team.

Any special message for your fellow German nationals in Thailand?

Enjoy this amazing place to the max with all it has to offer. As an expatriate living abroad or travelling the world you are always an ambassador for your country, culture and mentality. It’s good to keep that in mind.

ermany’s “National Day” is generally regarded as being October 3, which is German Unity Day and a legal holiday across this federal republic of 16 länder (states).

As a national day, this is a relatively young one, dating only from 1990.

The German reunification – Deutsche Wiedervereinigung in German – was a process that unfolded in 1989 and 1990, and which saw which the German Democratic Republic (“GDR” or East Germany) join the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) to form a unified German nation.

Moreover, 1990 was the pivotal year when Berlin reunited into a single city after having being divided by the Cold War since 1945. The East German state started to fall apart in May

1989, when the removal of Hungary’s border fence opened a hole in the “Iron Curtain” – the border between Western Europe and Moscow-aligned East European nations.

This breach of the Iron Curtain caused an mass exodus of thousands of East Germans fleeing to West Germany through this opening in the Austria-Hungary border.

The Peaceful Revolution, a series of protests by East Germans, led to East Germany’s first free elections on March 18, 1990, and to negotiations between the the two Germanys, which culminated in a unification accord, and today’s stable and prosperous nation at the heart of Europe.

Complaints dog Apple over software glitches

A

pple released and then abruptly pulled back an update for the iOS software powering the iPhone last week after users complained of bugs, including one that disabled its cellular service.

The apparently botched update came after complaints about the reportedly fragile body on some of the large-screen iPhones which went on sale last week.

Apple released a tweak to its iOS 8 operating system, called iOS 8.0.1, but then pulled the software after complaints that the update disabled cellular service and Apple’s touch-identification system.

Apple did not respond to an queries. But, later, in a statement to the news website TechCrunch, Apple exolained: “We have received reports of an issue with the iOS 8.0.1 update. We are actively investigating these reports and will provide information as quickly as we can. In the meantime we have pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update.”

This latest unwelcome news caused additional embarrassment to Apple after some users posted comments about bends in the bodies of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus when carried in trouser pockets.

On the MacRumors forum of Apple users, one

iPhone buyer noted that, after carrying the handset in a front pocket for 18 hours, “I saw the reflection of the window in the iPhones slightly distorted.”

The user posted a picture of the bent iPhone, and dozens posted similar complaints on Twitter.

Apple said it sold more than 10 million of the new smartphones in the first three days since launching in a handful of countries, setting a stunning new record for opening weekend sales.

The new iPhones were launched Friday in the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico and Singapore.

They have been available in more than 20 additional countries since September 26, and will be retailing in some 115 countries by the end of the year.

Washington think-tankers recruit ‘Call of Duty’ creator

Washington think tank is recruiting the mastermind behind the best-selling Call of Duty video games to help policy wonks imagine future wars America may have to fight.

Dave Anthony, whose blockbuster gaming franchise has earned billions of dollars, is among a group of writers and producers enlisted by the Atlantic Council to look at how armed conflicts might evolve in the 21st Century.

The initiative, “The Art of Future War Project,” which launches next week, was born when Steven Grundman, a former Pentagon official now at the Atlantic Council, found himself impressed by the story line of a video game his son was playing.

The game, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, depicts a cold war set in 2025 between China and the United States, with the rival powers vying for coveted rare earth elements.

To come up with that game’s plot, Anthony gathered an eclectic group that included screenwriter David Goyer, who worked on the Batman films; author Peter Singer who has written about drone warfare; and Oliver North, the retired Marine officer turned television personality who rose to fame in the IranContra scandal of the 1980s.

“You get everybody in a room like that, and all the different perspectives come together,” Anthony said from his home in Bel Air, California.

“That combination was fascinating. What I would like to bring to Washington is that kind of thinking.”

The British-born Anthony, 41, said there is no shortage of scenarios outlining future threats to the United States, with a plethora of experts, books and

films forecasting dangers on the horizon.

“The problem is we’re not preparing for it. And the government is not set up to prepare for it. That’s what I want to question.

“What can we do about that?” Anthony said “The stock answers are – ‘well, we don’t have the money for it’ or ‘we can’t possibly predict what’s coming next so why bother.’ That’s what I want to blow apart.”

The Atlantic Council said it had sought out Anthony because national security decision makers cannot keep up with the frenetic pace of change in the world, and that “new voices” are needed to make sense of a chaotic landscape.

“Writers, directors and producers and other artists bring to bear observations derived from wholly different experiences in the creative world,” the council said in a statement.

“They can ask different kinds of questions that will challenge assumptions and status quo ways of tackling some of today’s toughest national security problems.”

Anthony, whose Call of Duty series has a hotlyanticipated new installment due out in November, said his experience running a multi-billion dollar production company has some parallels to government work.

There are billions of dollars at stake, intense pressures and “inflexible” thinking among corporate executives that has to be overcome.

The US government and military also face a dilemma trying to adapt amid uncertainty, but Anthony argues the greatest danger is refusing to take any risks.

Myanmar web surfers were once paradigms of patience and ingenuity as they dodged and weaved through the former military regime’s communications blocks in decrepit backstreet Internet cafes.

But c o m mut er s i n Myanmar’s cities can now be seen tapping away on smartphones as an online awakening sweeps the country, fuelled by the loosening of junta-era restrictions and foreign telecoms unleashing a flood of affordable SIM cards.

book, Google, and Instagram have rapidly expanded their presence here, lured by the growing market – and web-savvy local entrepreneurs are also seizing the chance to create Internet ventures. “ There are so many things I want to do – I think about it not as business but as a way to find solutions to problems I

face,” said Ei Maung as he demonstrated his prototype traffic app in a car inching through the congested streets of Yangon.

Maung’s Crazy Yangon Traffic app went live in June and allows smartphone users to share traffic problems and view potential snarl-ups on their daily driving routes.

ready increased exponentially since the country began to throw off the shackles of military rule.

Just one per cent of the population was thought to be online three years ago, as the democratic transition began, but the loosening of web controls and greater access to affordable phone cards has opened the Internet up to millions.

N o r w a y ’s T e l e n o r launched SIM cards costing just 1,500 kyat (B48) in Mandalay – a far cry from the huge sum a card could cost under military rule.

An estimated 25 percent of people are already online and the Myanmar Computer Federation expects around half of the population, over 25 million people, to be surfing the net in the next three years.

oundhog Day’ meets ‘American Pie’. If it had followed Groundhog’s plot more closely and faced up to the accusations of total plagiarism then the film would have been better although probably never released.

Now I should start by saying that I laughed hard and often throughout this high school romp. It’s smutty, toilet honour aside, it was slick and cleverly put together. The one sentence plot; A high school senior has to re-live losing his virginity over and over again until he gets it right. In other words ‘Groundhog Day’ with lots of pimples and bottoms. In ‘Groundhog Day’ Bill Murray’s day resets as the alarm clock wakes him up. In ‘premature’ Rob’s day reset every time he, umm….errr, ejaculates. Hey, it wasn’t my idea!

The young actors tried to make something entertaining of a totally derivative script and they did well with below average material.

There is really nothing memorable or interesting about this film but a perfect date movie. Don’t think for a moment that it’s the sort of movie you can take your mother to. Both of you are going to be uncomfortable watching this stuff, so save the visit with Mum for ‘Sound of Music II’. Then again, a perfect night out with friends. You’ll be joking and laughing out loud for at least two minutes after walking out of the cinema.

‘Premature’ is directed by Dan Beers, with great performance by Alan Tudyk as supporting actor and with Katie Findlay, a new Canadian actress that we’ll see more of.

Craig Roberts appears in a supporting role

Winning out over the western landscapes of Utah and Wyoming, the state of Colorado has secured the deal to welcome Quentin Tarantino’s Hateful Eight. They tempted the production with a US$5m incentive package that will, permits approving, see Tarantino filming on a 900-acre ranch near Telluride.

Fittingly, it’s the biggest film to hit the state since True Grit in 1969. There’s news just in that Quentin Tarantino’s on-again, off-again Western, The Hateful Eight, will commence shooting in January – all in glorious 65mm.

Harvey Weinstein, renewing his long acquaintance with the writer/director, is promising to pull out all the stops for the post-Civil War Western and afford it “the widest 70mm release for over 20 years”.

Said Harvey and Bob Weinstein in a statement, “We are incredibly excited to begin production on The Hateful Eight, as we know this picture will be as innovative, brash and of course fun as all Quentin projects prior.

“There is, quite simply, no other filmmaker like him, and we are as proud as ever to continue this partnership that started over 20 years ago.”

There are few plot details out there yet, unless you’re one of the few people to have seen that leaked draft that had Tarantino threatening to abandon the film, but the winter shoot does present the intriguing prospect of a snowbound Western.

Brosnan channels inner scumbag

and commands the comedic timing better than the rest. The lead is played stone-faced

by John Karna. His performance grows more enjoyable as Rob embraces the fact that he can do what he want at school, safe in the knowledge that there will be no consequences as soon as he does what teenage boys are best at – so long as he can find a private place for a few moments of self-abuse, he’ll escape to a fresh day. Life without repercussions.

As Rob maneuvers through his orgasmtriggered time-reset, he spends rather too much time swapping vulgarities with his oversexed best friend (Craig Roberts), and proves remarkably slow when it comes to learning from his mistakes. ‘Hey! Rob. Remember last time?!’

Is it crude? Yep. Is it much the same as many films you’ve seen before? Yep. Is it a lot of silly fun? Yep. Maybe you missed many of the 1980s teenage comedies. No problem.

You’ll get to see a bit of all of them rolled into one silly, and slightly naughty, night out. In short ‘Premature’ does for mayonnaise what ‘American Pie’ did for home baking. I laughed a lot but I can’t remember why.

A f t er at t empt i n g t o r e c apt u r e his Bond days with action thriller The November Man, Pierce Brosnan is taking aim at a character on an even dodgier moral keel. He’s set to play a drug creator in Urge.

Aaron Kaufman, who has worked as a producer with Robert Rodriguez on the likes of Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, is looking to make the movie as his directing debut. He wrote the script with Jason Zumwalt and Jerry Stahl and wants the cameras rolling next month kicking off in New York. The plot follows a group of friends on holiday at a swanky island destination, who throw caution to the wind and take up the offer of a new designer drug that causes them lose the ability to control their urges. So, like many already existing drugs and booze, then? Hopefully this will offer a new twist to the tale, and that Brosnan will get to be charming and calculating as the man behind the narcotic.

Shatner confirms contact with Star Trek 3

Rumours sprang up last week that Roberto Orci, J.J. Abrams and the Star Trek 3 team were working on a way to squeeze William Shatner into the new film. Shatner has confirmed that he’s spoken to Abrams about the idea, according to sources. And according to The Shat, Abrams called him from London with word of a potential way to fit Shatner’s Captain Kirk into the new movie, in much in the same way that Leonard Nimoy’s Spock has appeared in both the recent rebooted films. And Shatner’s response? “It depends on what you do with the character, but I would be delighted.”

alcolm Young, one of the founding members of legendary Australian hard-rockers AC/DC, has retired due to health issues but the band will press ahead with a world tour next year, they announced Thursday (September 25).

The group, one of the biggest grossing bands of all time, was founded by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young in Sydney in 1973, and has gone on to sell more than 200 million albums.

In announcing their new album, Rock or Bust, they said that guitarist Young, 61, would not be returning to the lineup after he took a break earlier this year due to unspecified health issues.

“Unfortunately, due to the nature of Malcolm’s condition, he will not be returning to the band,” they stated.

“AC/DC will undertake a world tour in support of Rock Or Bust” in 2015. Stevie Young, nephew of members Angus and Malcolm Young, plays rhythm guitar on Rock Or Bust and will accompany the band on tour.” The new album will be released on December 2. AFP

ctober is upon us, so let the “legends” do battle! It’s gonna be a musical rampage! And Rocktober is just around the corner.

Yes, for the first time, Phuket’s young, award winning Legends of Siam band

and the exciting The Colin “illy” Hill Band of Phuket’s famed Lost Legends, will take the lead on stage in a nonstop whirlwind of top class music for three Fridays in October. (October 10, 17 and 24).

It is pop punk and pop rock versus classic rock’n’roll.

Rocktober will rock for more than two hours of non-stop solid rock’n’roll, punk and pop rock, rhythm and blues, and a touch of the classics at the colourful Underwood Art Factory, scene of numerous “Lost Legends” performances in 2012 and 2013 and last year’s The Phantom of the Popra.

Special guests, Lost Legends star, Pjae Stanley (October 10 and 24 only) and also and pianist and opera singer, Andrew Snape, star of successful Phantom of the Popra show at the Factory last October, will bring their unique styles to the proceedings.

From The Colin Hill Band expect a grand mixture of “guitar-hero classics” by giants of the music industry such as Mark Knopfler, Gary Moore and the late great Jimi Hendrix. There will be Neil Young, Free, traditional Chicago/ Delta blues and even rock versions of classical music.

Each band will perform for an hour, then come together with guest stars.

Pjae will bring her high-tempo brand of rock, rhythm and blues and jazz, and Andrew, who will also be master of ceremonies, will deliver some songs from Phantom of the Opera and Queen’s classic, I Want to Break Free. There may even a guest appearance by a rapper!

A howling good time to catch ‘wolf of the Sea’ CAST AWAY

H I ONC E AGA I N M Y fellow Ofshinadoes, With the continuing inclement weather our trips to sea have been spasmodic to say the least, so in this month’s article I thought I would write about our favorite sports fish, “the wolf of the sea”, the Sailfish.

Apart from the occasional visit by a marauding cousin, the Marlin, the Sailfish is the most sought-after prize patrolling our waters and needs all the concentration a fisherman can muster to catch, as this speedster of the deep can reach 60MPH and turn on a sixpence.

Their color is dark to silver gray but watch closely when you land one, as they change color possibly 3 or 4 times as we hold up our prize, before releasing back to the depths.

Growing very quickly, birth to nearly full size in only a year, these potentially 3m x 100kg fish give the angler the best photo opportunity he or she will ever get as the Sailfish when hooked, is a notoriously powerful and acrobatic fighter.

Locally, feeding mostly on our ever diminishing stocks of squid, to view them in action against a “bait ball” of small fish is something to behold.

The “Sails” circle the bait ball, compressing it and forcing it to the surface at which time they take it in turn to attack the swarm with their bills, stunning the little fish then turning 180 degrees, in their own length, at high speed, to pick up the injured remnants of the ball. The water is boiling with jumping Sails, shoals of the bait jumping for their lives and all the time Frigate birds are streaking past you, often at arm’s length, to picking off the jumping fry. It’s like watching orchestrated mayhem and a

site to behold. On days like this I realize what fishing’s all about, yes catching is the basic principal but when it comes down to it, seeing sites as I have witnessed, a 500+ strong pods of Dolphins, a Killer Whale and many other magical moments – That’s why we call it fishing and “not” catching.

This month’s pirate joke, and they’re getting worse.

What’s a pirate’s favorite letter? You’d think it’d be the RRR... But they love the C. And finally, Exotic Fishing Thailand is holding the charity event I told you about last month on November the 25th 8am till 6pm. The entry fee for the event will be B5,500 (B5,000 to charity).

Donaldson leads EU to sweet Ryder win GOLF

amie Donaldson was left reflecting on a “dream” Ryder Cup debut after starring in Europe’s victory.

The 38-year-old Welshman rounded off an impressive three days at Scotland’s Gleneagles course when he clinched the singles point that sealed the team’s latest win over the United States.

Donaldson’s brilliant pitch to the 15th green led to a concession from his American opponent Keegan Bradley.

Donaldson beat Bradley 4 and 3, having partnered England’s Lee Westwood to two foursomes victories on Friday and Saturday.

“It was pretty special, the fact it came down to me, you dream of these things,” he said. “But what is more important is that the team won.

“Everyone played pretty well and we had a fantastic captain who was inspirational and that was enough to win the cup back.

“It’s been more than I expected, it’s been amazing,” Donaldson added.

“You imagine what it is going to be like in the Ryder Cup but when it comes down to it it was bigger and

“There was so many people it was like playing in a football stadium every hole.”

Donaldson, asked if the enormity of his achievement

had sunk in, said: “No. I’ll just put my feet up and spend some time with the kids now, and enjoy what has been an awesome success.”

Back injuries hampered Donaldson’s early years as a professional before he won the Irish Open in 2012.

Donaldson, however, only qualified for the European Ryder Cup team by winning the Czech Open in August.

His brilliant approach shot to defeat Bradley on Sunday has assured Donaldson of a place in Ryder Cup history, but he remains eager to take part in future editions.

“I’ve got to play really well but hopefully that is the case. I’d been wanting this for so long. You don’t want to miss one of these in a hurry,” he said.

“But it is brutally hard just to get into the team, before you’ve even teed it up. I played as well as I could for a year and scraped in by one event.

“It has been an immense week but you can’t imagine what it is going to be like until you stand on that first tee,” he added.

However, Donaldson was quick to join the chorus of praise for European captain Paul McGinley.

“After a long week the most important thing was the team won and we just had a great time. It was awesome team spirit all week.

“Paul was brilliant -- inspirational captaincy. At the end of the day we did enough to win, and that was the important thing.” AFP

Played in front of several hundred die-hard fans at Surakul Stadium, the friendly match was to be the last formal warm-up exerise before both professional Thai leagues restart next week.

Both the elite TPL and Yamaha League One – the former of which Singhtarua FC, also known as Thai Port FC or the Port Lions sit in 10th of 20 teams, and the latter of which Phuket FC are in 13th of 18 teams – have been on a month-long break to accommodate the Asian Games taking place in South Korea.

BISP teacher goes for gold in Asian Masters Athletics ATHLETICS LAST WEEK, BISP PRImary teacher Michele Hossack travelled to Kitakami, in Iwate prefecture in the north of Japan, to take part in the 18th Asian Masters Athletics Championships.

These championships, which are held every two years, are the major athletic sporting event for master athletes in Asia. In 2014 almost 3000 athletes from 19 different Asian countries participated.

This is the first time the championships have been opened to non-Asian athletes, and five non-Asians competed representing Australia, Russia, Norway, Turkey and the United States.

Michele competed in four events, the maximum number allowed, and achieved one first place and three second places. However, as no medals were presented to non-Asian athletes, Michele had to make do with a certificate recording her time in each event.

The oldest athlete competing was a 104-year-old Japanese man and many more athletes were in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

The city of Kitakami turned out in force to cheer on the athletes at the world class sporting complex and the local school children had obviously been busy for weeks hand painting flags welcoming all the different nations participating.

remier League leaders Chelsea conserved their three-point advantage by beating Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday, while Southampton defeated Queens Park Rangers 2-1.

Havi ng d raw n 1-1 at champions Manchester City last weekend, Chelsea continued their unbeaten start to the season with a straightforward win over Villa at Stamford Bridge.

Willian set up Brazilian countryman Oscar to steer home Chelsea’s opener in the seventh minute before Diego Costa scored his eighth goal in six Premier League games with a glancing header.

Costa also played a role in Chelsea’s third goal with a right-foot drive that Brad Guzan could only push straight at Villa defender Aly Cissokho, enabling Willian to stab home from close range.

“Even during the period the game was 1-0, when it could be open, it was always closed because we controlled

the game,” said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. “The result was a consequence of our dominance.” Southampton remain Chelsea’s closest rivals after winning 2-1 at home to Queens Park Rangers, with Ryan Bertrand and Graziano Pelle finding the net either side of a Charlie Austin effort.

Meanwhile, champions Manchester City withstood a fightback by Hull City to record a 4-2 win at the KC Stadium that saw them climb to third.

RUGBY LEAGUE CANTERBURY’S JAMES Graham on Sunday played down his looming confrontation with fellow English Test forward Sam Burgess in this weekend’s National Rugby League grand final against South Sydney.

Graham, like Burgess the previous night against the Sydney Roosters, produced a blockbusting performance as Canterbury held out Penrith 18-12 Saturday to advance to the season decider.

The influential English prop was in the thick of the action and scored a try to open the scoring in the first half.

Burgess and Graham have been among the most impressive forwards in the NRL this season and the former St Helens man said he was disappointed when he learned his international teammate was heading back home to play rugby union.

However, he said it was wrong to suggest he would look to target Burgess more than

any other Rabbitohs forward next Sunday.

“I reckon honestly, there is not as much in it as people say,” Graham told reporters.

“He plays in the middle, I play in the middle. It’s only because we tackle each other. I have to do my job for my team and stick to the game plan.”

Burgess negotiated his shock move to Bath rugby during the Rugby League World Cup in the UK last year but Graham said he knew nothing about his decision to try his hand at the 15-man game.

“I was disappointed to be honest, really disappointed.

It happens in England too.

There are a huge number of outside backs produced by rugby league and then snapped up by rugby union.”

Graham said he was intrigued by the media interest in his country of birth but said it was something never discussed in the Bulldogs dressing room.

A 50,000 crowd at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata watched the match kick off in perfect conditions and All Blacks fly-half Beauden Barrett potted two penalties within 10 minutes.

Usually the third-choice playmaker, Barrett started because Dan Carter is recovering from injury and drunk Aaron Cruden missed the flight from New Zealand and was given a two-Test ban.

Right-wing Ben Smith scored the first New Zealand try on 12 minutes as he took an inside pass from full-back Dagg to dive over and Barrett converted.

Argentina were 13 points adrift with as many minutes gone and South African referee Craig Joubert repeatedly penalising the blue-and-white outfit for forward infringements.

When Dagg committed a late tackle during a rare Argentine sortie, fly-half Nicolas

Sanchez slotted the penalty and the Pumas were finally on the scoreboard.

Sanchez had another penalty opportunity when All Blacks No. 8 Kieran Read was guilty of a high tackle, but his kick rebounded off the post and no Puma chased after the loose ball.

Another New Zealand try arrived on 25 minutes with the ball speeding along the line to Ben Smith, who sent Dagg over and Barrett converted again.

Argentina squandered their best chance of a first-half try when centre Juan Martin Hernandez surrendered possession cheaply with the line in sight and the All Blacks cleared.

Sanchez cut the deficit with his second successful penalty and New Zealand trooped off at half-time with a 20-6 advantage.

New Zealand thought they had a third try on 55 minutes, but video replays showed Savea in front of Barrett when the

fly-half chipped into space for the giant left-wing to go over.

The let-off for the Pumas was temporary, however, as a skip pass gave Savea the chance to demonstrate his power and he burst past several wouldbe tacklers for a try Barrett converted.

Argentina lacked the composure of New Zealand when they came close to the try-line with replacement scrum-half Martin Landajo knocking on in a promising position.

New Zealand needed a fourth try for the bonus point and it came on 68 minutes as replacement scrum-half Perenara took a Malakai Fekitoa pass and dived over.

Barrett maintained his perfect goal-kicking record on the night with a fourth successful conversion.

The home crowd finally had cause to cheer in the final minute as a good move ended with substitute wing Horacio Agulla going over for a converted try. AFP

ew Zealand defeated Argentina 34-13 in La Plata Saturday to clinch a fifth consecutive Rugby Championship title.

The All Blacks have now won the four-nation (three before the joining of Argentina in 2012) tournament 16 out of the 19 editions since 1996 (the other three titles going to the Springboks) Ben Smith, Israel Dagg, Julian Savea and TJ Perenara scored the tries that gave the All Blacks a bonus point and an unassailable six-point advantage over South Africa.

A late try flurry earned the Springboks a 28-10 victory over Australia in Cape Town earlier Saturday.

New Zealand have 21 points with one round remaining, South Africa 15, Australia 10 and Argentina three in the southern hemisphere championship.

Victory stretched the unbeaten run of the world champions to 22 Tests ahead of a showdown with arch rivals South Africa in Johannesburg next Saturday.

It was a special match for New Zealand skipper and flanker Richie McCaw as he equalled the record of 133 All Blacks appearances set by legendary former lock Colin Meads.

McCaw has played in 132 Tests and a match against the Barbarians while Meads won

hai athletes have excelled at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon South Korea, which concludes on Saturday (October 4), as the Thais hopes for a 6th or 7th place finish.

At the time of going to press, Thailand, had won nine gold medals, in bowling (men’s singles), golf (women’s team), tennis (women’s doubles), sailing (29er – Women’s Two Person Dinghy), taekwondo (Women’s Flyweight), and two in sepak takraw (Women’s and Men’s teams) and cycling (women’s road race and BMX).

And also had silver and bronze medals in beach volleyball, bowling, golf, tennis, sailing, weightlifting, judo, shooting, rowing and athletics.

Thailand was in eighth place in the overall standings, hoping to get an advantage over Taiwan and North Korea, who also were sitting on eight gold medals, but with more silvers.

Following is a summary of Thailand’s performance in the the continent’s ultimate sports event last week.

Nopkao Punpat and Nichapa WaiWai won Thailand’s seventh gold on Tuesday, in their sailing event, losing only 19 points, two better than the silver medal team from Singapore. Nopkao said their victory was beyond her expectations.

Later in the day, Thailand’s world champion taekwondo star Chanatip Sonkham added the country’s eighth gold with a decisive 10-3 victory over China’s Li Zhaoyi in the 49 kg final.

There was disappointment in two team sports in Tuesday’s semifinal action however.

China but then lost the next three. The Thais had faced Japan in the bronze medal on The Thai men’s football team lost a hard-fought match to South Korea. The score was 2-0, with both goals coming in the first half. Thailand had most of the possession in the second half, however, but were unable to put the ball past the hosts 14 defenders.

Thailand took on Iraq on Thursday with the bronze medal of the Asian Games at stake.

Thailand’s Jutathip Maneephan won the women’s cycling road race for a quite unexpected gold medal, Thailand’s fifth of the Games. Needless to say she was ecstatic as she received her medal. The Roi-et native had enough energy left at the end of the 126km rainsoaked race to outsprint her

competitors to the finish line.

And the golden news didn’t stop with Jutathip. Later in the, after a two-hour rain delay – the same rain that hit the bicycle race – Thailand’s veteran tennis professional Tamarine Tanasugarn teamed with newcomer Luksika Kumkhum to defeat Taiwan’s Hsieh Su Wei and Chin Wei Chan in a hard-fought women’s doubles final match.

The Thai won 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

“This gold medal is very important for me because it is my last Asian Games,’’ Tamarine told reporters.

“I will certainly not play in the next Asian Games after six consecutive tournaments.

“I played in many Asian Games and finally won gold today. I’d like to thank the Thai people for their support and Luksika for her help. I will never forget this moment.’’

Asian Games debutant Luksika, 21, said she had not expected to win gold.

“I am very happy to win gold in my first Asian Games.

Tamarine’s experience helped me a lot. I have to thank her for choosing me as her partner,’’ she said.

Luksika will be trying to won another gold medal today in the women’s singles final.

Thailand won three gold medals Sunday – their most glittering day so far at the 17th Asian Games.

Having secured only one gold medal in bowling in the first week, the Thais claimed three titles – two in sepak takraw and the other in golf.

Thailand swept the men’s and women’s team crowns with the men beating hosts South

Korea 2-0 and the women finishing off Myanmar 2-0 in their gold medal matches.

In golf, Thailand had never won an Asian Games medal.

But they ended the barren spell with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Incheon.

Busabakorn Sukapan, Supamas Sangjan and Benyapa Niphatsophon won gold in the women’s team event.

Busabakorn also got silver and Supamas bronze in the women’s individual contest.

Thailand also won bronze in the men’s team event.

In beach volleyball, Thai Tanarattha Udomchavee and Varpatsorn Radarong had to settle for silver after losing to China’s Xia Xinyi and Ma Yuanyuan 21-12, 21-18 in the women’s final.

In football, the Thai men beat Jordan 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

The Thais, who have never won a football medal at the Asian Games, will face South Korea in the semifinals tomorrow.

In tennis, Asiad debutant Luksika Kumkhum is just one win away from winning gold after beating Japanese Eri Hozumi 2-0 in the women’s singles semifinals.

Luksika also reached the women’s doubles final with her partner Tamarine Tanasugarn.

The pair beat Taiwanese Chan Yung Jan and Chan Hao Ching 6-4, 6-4 in the last four.

Unfortunately, twins Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana, one of Thailand’s best hopes, lost 2-1 to India’s Saketh Sai Myneni and Sanam Krishan Singh in the semi-finals.
