The crash on Sunday left 18 students inj ured when the bus f lipped and rolled off the road in the Kok Kloi subdistrict of Phang Nga, immediately north of Phuket.

Tanapon was arrested on the spot and charged with reckless driving causing inj ury. The accident happened at about 8:30am on the bypass road to Phang Nga Town,

According to the plans, the required roadworks’ entire length will be 1.6 kilometres, and the tunnel itself will be 669 meters long. “ The tunnel will have two lanes only, and both those lanes will be dedicated to tra c travellnig northbound,” Mr Samak said. The one-lane northbound left-hand turn to travel to the airport will remain as it is now, he added. “ Above ground, there will

be five lanes dedicated to traffic travelling southbound,” he said. “ I believe, this proj ect will go well according to plan, and we will pay particular attention to safety with this proj ect, especially after our ex perience with incidents at other proj ects – such as the gaping potholes in the road,” Mr Samak noted. “ Also, with this proj ect specifically, will order our officers here at the Phuket Highways Department to inspect the construction site often to make sure that all the construction is being done safely and in accordance with the contract,” he added. The airport turnoff currently has no official title, but is instead simply known as the intersection of Route 402 ( Thepkrasattri Rd) and Route 4026 ( which heads west toward the airport) .

POLICE ARE LOOKING for foreigners suspected of spraying gra ti at tourist locations in Phuket, following posts on social media on Tuesday ( Mar 1) complaining of a recent spate of samestyle spray-painted markings across the island. One of the posts showed two men standing on Thao Thepkrasattri Bridge, which links Phuket with the mainland, with gra ti left behind at the same spot immediately after their departure. Other posts showed samestyle gra ti at popular tourist beach locations, including Phuket’s popular sunset viewpoint at Promthep Cape. T

his edition – hitting stands today, Friday, March 4, 2016 – represents issue 262, marking the fifth anniversary since he huket e launched on Friday, March 4, 2011. n the grand scheme, five years is not long, but from within the constantly evolving media industry, the past halfa-decade spanning 1,827 days to reach this benchmark can be likened to a small mountain, one that has been scaled steadily yet surely by a dedicated team through clear but challenging, and at times rough, conditions. Making it possible from the helm of upper management, Simon Samaan and Jason Beavan have been integral in creating and driving what has become the most prominent media company south of Bangkok and north of Kuala Lumpur, with he huket e continuing to serve proudly as the flagship

of the fleet. Inevitably, the face of the editorial team of our humble little paper has transformed over the years, and the present team is ever grateful to have gained and learned from all the triumphs, and failures, of our predecessors, all of whom played some part in making the paper the success it is today. And for this legacy, we thank you all: Alasdair Forbes, Phil Teese, Sarah Jarvis, Nigel Carter, Greg O’Regan, Marque Rome, Norachai Thavisin, Janyaporn Jornj arun, Sukanya Phoonphong, Paritta Wangkiat, Simon Ostheimer, Dan Ogunshakin, Dane Halpin, Claire Connell, Jody Houton, Tom Metcalfe, Apinya Saksee, Nattha Thepbamrung, Prapaporn Jitmaneeyaphan, Naraporn Tuarob, Anthika Muangrod, Wiparatana Nathalang, Saran Mitrarat, Nick Walker, Nick Davies, Saroj Kueprasertkij ,

Although the “ W ho” , “ When” and “ What” have been in flux, the “ here” and “ Why” of this mission remain constant. Phuket’s challenges ahead are as daunting as ever before, but we’re now more prepared to serve the growing, evolving market, reinforced with the complements of TV , radio, social media, and our Russian and Chinese sister publications, enabling us to keep up with the “ How” . Above all, we thank our faithful readers, contributors, informants and advertisers, who are the most important factors in the formula. We look forward to serving you in the coming five years, and beyond. at a o a o!

This “ transfer” is standard Thai process... never fire anyone, regardless of the damage they have caused, j ust ship them off to some other undeserving district. It’s kind of like stepping in dog crap, then wiping your shoe on your pant leg… the shoe is better, but the stink is still around. And since I j ust learned that this guy has been in Phuket

Locals need to clean up their own act first

e h ne e a a n huket pu ta k on tota ban Phuket already has a huge garbage problem. Unfortunately the locals throw their garbage j ust about anywhere without a care. huket gov t o cials need to initiate and promote a ‘ Keep Phuket Clean’ and ‘ Phuket Pride’ campaign and make all locals responsible for the garbage around their own homes and businesses. Anyone caught littering, an occurrence I see daily...people throwing garbage from their motorcycles as they drive etc, should be fined by police

if caught, even on CCTV cameras. Monthly, all the local schools should gather in their local villages and do a walk through with big, green garbage bags, picking up whatever the adults have missed. All local communities need to provide visible public garbage cans and that goes for the beaches as well. And all local communities should have collection for these garbage cans to be emptied regularly. Education, education and keep everybody involved, it has to start somewhere. As for allowing or disallowing RV s in Phuket, I say it shouldn’t happen. If, as the article states, these vehicles are mostly coming from China, there’s a huge red flag right there. e all know their track record for hygiene, throwing away garbage, and dealing with waste management. Not good at all. Until Phuket locals clean up their own act, how could they possible deal with more garbage and waste coming from Chinese RV s? Y o da e huket o hou huket an Why are RV s are technically illegal in Thailand? They are

driven all over the world! It seems Thailand ( again) is living in the past! Why the Land Transport Department still has not come up with laws and regulations before these RV s arrive and ride Thailand? Why Thailand is always behind reality, and then their answer is j ust blunt: can not… What is wrong if RV people travel ‘ cheap’? Not sleep in Thai hotels and buy food in convenient store? Anything wrong with that? And do Thai authorities think that renting a RV is cheap? Mostly people not own a RV , but rent it as a mobile holiday accommodation. Y ou can sleep, cook, relax in it. Anything wrong with that? Some Thais are so fixated on making money out of tourists that they try to block anything that puts less money into Thai pockets. The thinking becomes disgusting with false reasons and manoeuvres. Get your beaches under control first on Phuket! First, get rid of all illegal polluting activities in front of police stations. Why don’t you do that? If I were a oyal Thai olice o cer, and witnessed all the illegal doings in front of my station I would feel ashamed. K urt

‘Protect the tourists’ Army chief orders safety boost in tourist areas BANGKOK

A

rmy chief Gen Teerachai Nakwanich has ordered army unit commanders stationed in tourist provinces to boost safety for tourists in the wake of the rape and assault of a group of French tourists in Trat on Saturday night ( Feb 27 ) . In a related move, Deputy police chief Srivara Ransibrahmanakul has called for security background checks to be carried out on migrant workers seeking temporary work permits. Col Sirichan Ngathong, deputy spokeswoman of the National Council for Peace and Order, discussed Gen Teerachai’s order Tuesday ( Mar 1) after meeting with army unit chiefs. Col Sirichan said Gen Teerachai wants soldiers to work closely with local police and o cials to ensure safety for tourists across the country and boost safety standards

She said Gen Teerachai also said he wanted to see laws strictly enforced to ensure tourists’ safety as this would also help increase tourism. Gen Teerachai was also

concerned about illegal labour, mafia, gambling dens and contraband goods and told the unit chiefs to help deal with these problems, she added. He also ordered his men responsible for safety in coastal provinces to work closely with the Royal Thai Navy and local police to carry out inspections

in workplaces suspected of hiring illegal labourers and providing them with shelter. Col Sirichan was speaking Tuesday after Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that five ambodian fishermen arrested on Sunday ( Feb 28) had admitted to Eat Sophea, Cambodian Ambas-

sador to Thailand, that they raped and assaulted French tourists on Koh Kut because they were drunk at the time. Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said that Amb Eat had accompanied Thai o cials to the island on Tuesday to investigate the case, “ to make sure that it did happen or whether it is [ a true] allegation or not” , according to the Phnom Penh Post news website. Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said authorities in Phnom Penh did not yet know the background of the five men, he said, adding that if the men were charged, the government would provide a lawyer for them. Chum Sounry described the case as “ sensitive” , and said it had the potential to damage Cambodia’s reputation, but cautioned, “ we have to wait to see whether it is like the reports or not” . Four French tourists: two men – Thomas Buiron, 30, and

Edbri Ronain Rene, 29 – and two women aged 57 and 28 were attacked late on Saturday. Trat police chief Nopparat Rintapon said the attackers swam from their fishing boat to assault the group and raped the two women at knifepoint. They were caught while trying to escape. Meanwhile, the three inured victims identified the five ambodian suspects as their attackers at an identity parade Tuesday. The identification of the suspects – Y im, 25, Pai, 22, and Goen 25, Tee and Boad Mar, both 20 – was arranged at Trat Hospital in Muang district Tuesday morning amid tight security. They were later taken to Trat Provincial Court in a police mini-truck for their detention to be ex tended pending further investigations. Pol Maj Gen Nopparat said the French victims, two women and a man, picked out all five ambodian nationals in the line-up. B angkok Post

The trio, identified as Piyachart Thachart, 37 , of Phetchaburi; Paisarn Saensenya, 31, of Nakhon Sawan and Saranya Pongthani, 32, of Lop Buri, were caught on the Kanchanaphisek ex pressway in Samut Prakan’s Phra Pradaeng district. Pol Maj Gen Methee Ku-

sonsang, deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 1, said on Tuesday that the arrests followed information that a gang would use a trailer truck to smuggle a consignment of drugs to the far South, using the Kanchanaphisek ex press

way bridge across the Chao Phraya River. Police deployed to the area stopped the suspected trailer truck for a search on Saturday evening and found the pills hidden in modified fuel tanks, Pol Maj Gen

Methee said. Mr Piyachart, the driver, confessed he was hired by Jakkrawan Khaithavorn to deliver the drugs to Songkhla’s Hat Y ai district. Mr Paisarn and Ms Saranya arrived a short time later and offered the arresting police B250,000 to release Mr Piyachart. The duo were arrested. Police later arrested Mr Jakkrawan at his house in Lop Buri and also seized some weapons from him. The suspect was handed over to local police, said Pol Maj Gen Methee. A search of the house of another gang member arrested earlier, Thanathorn Sukchai, in Bangkok’s Rom Klao resulted in ya bah pills, two cars, two motorcycles and four mobile phones being seized. Pol Maj Gen Ronnasilp Phusara, a deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 1, said the gang had smuggled the drugs from Tak province

and stored them in the Romklao area. The drugs were destined for Hat Y at district and the three southernmost border provinces. In another operation, three members of a drug tra cking gang were arrested separately and 118,000 ya bah pills seized in Surat Thani and Narathiwat provinces. The suspects – Assamanwadee Binmanu, 34; Masae Dorlor, 37 , and Paisan Klaharn, 35, all from Narathiwat – were apprehended on Monday ( Feb 29) and taken to a media briefing at the Southern Border Provinces Police Operations Centre on Tuesday. Mr Assamanwadee was arrested in Surat Thani while the two other men were caught at a police checkpoint in Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat. Police said the gang had smuggled the drugs from the Central region to customers in the deep South and Malaysia. B angkok Post

Ovec urges for harsher student brawl laws BANGKOK THE OFFICE OF V OCAtional Education Commission ( Ovec) has proposed Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha use his power under Section 44 of the interim constitution to pass tougher laws on student brawls to curb the perennial problem of violence among vocational schools. The move came after a recent meeting between Ovec and the Ministry of Justice

M to find possible solutions to end the fighting. Section 44 could be used to avoid legal obstacles and cut short lengthy legal procedures so laws could be amended and implemented quickly. Ovec’s secretary-general Chaipreuk Sereerak said under a proposed law, penalties could cover parents and schools, not j ust students who are involved in inter-school violence, if the investigation can prove they failed to keep their students away from feuds.

“ Parents and colleges have a duty to teach youths basic morals and norms, which will tell them what is right or wrong. If they fail to do so, they should also take some responsibility,” Mr Chaipruek said. Moreover, punishment will also cover non-students such as alumni, dropouts and ex teachers implicated in violence as Ovec had found much of the problem stemmed from them, he added. Mr Chaipreuk said the pro-

posed law will also empower student inspectors and teachers to detain students involved in violence for up to six hours before sending them to police for further interrogation. “ In the past, student inspectors and teachers weren’t able to detain non-students or students who were involved in brawls because there is no legal basis for them to do so. So those who caused the problem usually got away without any charges being filed,” the vec chief said.

As well as this solution, Mr Chaipruek said Ovec has formed a special team to focus on social media as a channel to receive information. Teachers at present are assigned to monitor their students’ online behaviour as the animosity between students from rival schools sometimes occurs first on Facebook. Ovec has set up six working teams to monitor vocational schools closely in six different areas around

Bangkok to prevent bloody and sometimes fatal brawls among adolescents. “ Each team will ex change information and they will list students and some alumni into three groups – black, grey and white – according to their behaviour and history of violence,” Mr Chaipreuk said. “ We will then send police and teachers to meet the blacklisted students and their parents to ensure they don’t cause any trouble,” he added. Schoolhouse on the prairie

A symbol of over 50 years of Mongolia-North Korea ties MONGOLIA

F

or more than 50 years children on the windswept steppes of Mongolia have studied in a school built by a surprising benefactor: isolated, impoverished, often implacable North Korea. An image of the hermit state’s founder Kim Il-Sung hangs in a classroom in the yellow, two-storey building, symbolising a time when the countries marched largely in lockstep as Communist cogs in the machinery of Cold War confrontation. Now they move to starkly different rhythms. Former Soviet satellite Mongolia rode the wave of revolution that swept across Eastern Europe in 1989 and has become a vibrant democracy. North Korea, conversely, has doubled down into monolithic, nuclear-armed isolation. But the ties of the past endure, as evidenced by continuing North Korean attention to the school – and a quiet diplomatic channel between Ulan Bator and Pyongyang. The school has around 300 pupils aged six to 18, some of them boarders who stay in a dormitory while their nomadic parents herd sheep and other livestock on the steppes. Deshigiin Chuluunbat, principal, says its 1961 construction had its origins in the Korean War of the previous decade, when Mongolia sent horses and food as aid to Pyongyang and also took in North Korean orphans. “ North Korea reciprocated that help and built this school,” he said at the facility in Altanbulag, Tov province. Even now North Korean visitors come every year, despite Pyongyang eschewing the democratic trends that Mongolia has embraced and managing an

Photo: Johannes Eisele/AFP economy under international sanctions over its atomic and missile programmes. Pyongyang renovated a physics classroom in 2012 – the centenary of Kim’s birth – installing two plaques above the door emblazoned with his name in Korean and Mongolian, as well as his portrait over the blackboard. “ The ordinary people in the village are totally unaware of North Korea’s politics,” Chuluunbat said. “ They don’t pay attention or have any interest in it. They j ust think it’s good to collaborate with them and have a great school from them.” Mongolia’s government, however, acts as an intermediary in global efforts to engage with North Korea. As part of what is known as the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue – the name uses o cial transliteration – Mongolia has hosted negotiations between diplomats from Tokyo and Pyongyang over the issue of Japanese kidnapped to North Korea to train its spies. It saw a reunion in March last year between the parents of best known abductee Megumi

Y okota – seized as a 13-year-old in 197 7 , and whose fate remains unclear – and her North Koreaborn daughter. “ Mongolia is uniquely positioned as the only country in Northeast Asia that enj oys good relations not only with North Korea but also South Korea, the United States, China, Russia and Japan,” Brookings Institution scholars wrote in a paper. A sprawling, sparselypopulated country squeezed between giant neighbours Russia and China, Mongolia lies in a wider East Asian region beset by territorial squabbles and resentments from modern history, notably World War II. “ Mongolia wants to be a new Helsinki, a new Geneva,” said D. Shurkhuu, senior research fellow at the Institute of International Affairs of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. The Finnish capital was a venue for easing Cold War tensions via the landmark Helsinki Accords, and the Swiss city has for decades served as a key international negotiating centre. Even so Mongolia has not shied from blunt speaking.

President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj , who as a student leader played a key role in the country’s democratic transition, visited North Korea in 2013 and ex tolled the benefits of freedom at Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung University, saying in a speech: “ No tyranny lasts forever.” John Delury, an ex pert on China and Northeast Asia at

Y onsei University in Seoul, applauds lan ator s efforts. “ The platform that Mongolia provides is incredibly valuable because the United States government hardly talks to North Korea at all and you need some dialogue to have some basis for understanding where positions are,” he said. “ And Mongolia can create this neutral ground.”

But Elbegdorj did not meet North Korean leader Kim JongUn, he noted. “ The fact that he didn’t does remind us of the limits of this channel.” Such geopolitical intricacies pass over Altanbulag. The village is only around 50 kilometres from Ulan Bator but feels a world away from the capital. The last of the route is over unpaved steppe, where ovoo – mounds of earth and rock draped with colourful banners and sacred in Mongolian shamanism – dot the landscape. American Andrew Guarino was a volunteer English teacher there for two years. One day in 2012, he was summoned to find numerous o cial vehicles and men in dark suits with Kim Il-Sung badges. During a solemn ceremony marking the renovation of a classroom, the visitors clapped in unison, “never off beat”, and bowed before repeating the sequence, all with military-like precision. “ It was pretty surreal,” he said. mented the transformation plan since the first uarter of 2015 to curb losses by reducing flight fre uencies, discontinuing non profitable routes, cutting unnecessary costs and boosting revenue by adj usting its sales strategies and enhancing the competitiveness of its services. The transfor mation plan was approved by the State Enterprise Policy Committee on Jan 26 last year. Mr Charamporn said the airline s five business units dealing with passenger services, ground service, repairs and maintenance, warehouse ser vice and the airline’s kitchen must come up with cost-cutting measures by comparing their management costs with those of rival airlines so the carrier can reduce its overall costs

to compete with them. He also said the cabin factor, or the number of seats sold out of the total number of seats available, is also forecast to rise to 80% in 2016 from 7 2.9% in 2015, as THAI plans to launch new routes to Russia, China and Southeast Asia this year, and resume flights to the S nex t year. THAI is one of several state-controlled companies that have been undergoing an overhaul since the military seized power in May 2014. M r Charampor n said TH AI received deliver y of eight new aircraft and decommissioned 15 aircraft following the fleet strategy that cut its fleet to 95 aircraft, effective Dec 31, 2015, which was down from 102 aircraft in 2014.

Japanese businessmen watch a share prices board in Tokyo. Persistently low interest rates, as we have learned in the west, hurt savers and make people poorer. They also encourage ex cessive risk taking. In Japan’s case, there is far too much money sitting on deposit, and inflows into other conventional investments are

money theory, and it is what drives any market economy. Unfortunately, Japanese companies have become accustomed to deflationary pressure in the domestic economy, which means if a company borrows money – and then prices continue to fall – their revenue suffers and they struggle to repay the loan… even if the cost of borrowing is essentially zero. Although this current rate change only took effect on February 16, debt is already ex ceeding one quadrillion yen, and the longer the Japanese government continues with its policies, the more sense it makes for foreign investors to stay away from yen-denominated assets – especially Japanese government bonds. But for anyone looking to Japan for investment opportunities in some of the sectors in this article, such as real estate, they must weigh up the benefits of their investment against the possibility, or indeed the likelihood, of a further weakening in the yen. Whether we’ll see a much stronger Japan in the years ahead remains to be seen, but it is likely that, after this recent foray into negative interest rates, some sectors will profit and the yen will continue to weaken. Tourism and real estate are two sectors ex pected to ben-

ver the past few years, the central bank of Japan has tried every financial trick in the book to kick-start the ailing Japanese economy. They have increased the f lood of cash into the system, implemented tax cuts and kept interest rates down. So why did the latest interest rate cut by the Bank of Japan come as such a surprise to the financial community ecause it set rates at -0.1% … that’s right, a negative interest rate. The global economy is fragile, markets seem to be in turmoil, China certainly looks like it’s slowing down and low oil prices have made people nervous the world over, so Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe saw no other option but to step in with his continued aggressive measures to buoy the domestic Japanese economy. The yen has dropped from 7 5 to the US dollar to as low as 125 since Japan started embarking on its rock bottom

nowhere near the levels the economy requires to permit the government to ease off on its money printing. But it is unlikely that the rate cut was aimed at the frugal citizens of Japan, rather at the more miserly financial institutions. With the rate cut, institutions will now have to pay the government to deposit money in amounts that ex ceed the central bank’s stated minimums. In theory, this will stop the banking sector from building up reserves, and encourage banks to begin lending again – something which has been lacking in the Japanese economy for many years. A healthy economy needs some leverage in the form of loans and without that additional boost to the economy, the central bank is unlikely to achieve its inflation goals. ith more money flowing into the financial system in the form of loans, businesses should be able to ex pand and employ more workers. Those workers, in turn, will be able to take out loans themselves for things such as houses and cars. This is classic velocity of

Observing change through

T

he latest exhibition at Napas Art Gallery in Cherng Talay is entitled “Nature & Culture”, and on display from now until March 18 are some 50 works, which, as the title of the exhibition suggests, have been inspired by all the colourful life in and around Phuket.

‘Wave Jump’ is a piece in the ‘Sea Foam’ collection. This 70x90 cm, acrylic on canvas was inspired at Layan beach.

The exhibition’s paintings include themed works from local artists Soon Papan, Juffy Joob and Preme Sudawadee. The Phuket News recently sat down with Soon to find out more about this interesting exhibition. “We’ve received a lot more positive feedback so far this year. I think we’re more prepared than we were in previous exhibitions, and the concept and theme of the art has a clearer direction,” Soon explained. Soon points out that the use of colour and texture is much more “wholesome” and “varied”, with lots more use of hues and contrast, owing this to certain revelations that came to him from time spent at the beach, staring out to the Andaman Sea. Soon’s “Fong Talay” or “Sea Foam” collection includes about 30 paintings which incorporate either sea water, sand and/or pebbles as the main themes, and which were inspired by quality time spent at one of several beaches in Phuket, including Layan, Nai Thon and Kalim. Soon elaborated on the themes

and concept in one painting, “Wave Jump” which is a 70x90cm, Acrylic on canvas painting that was inspired at Layan beach. “The water in the sea symbolizes completeness and wholeness, of not only the Andaman [sea], but our everyday lives,” he remarked. In nature, and in this life, everything is subject to change, some things faster or slower than others. “If you observe the water, it’s always in constant flux. The tide is high, then it’s low, it’s changing all the time. But the changes are more rapid than say a rock, which experiences change over a longer period of time, because of its different composition... Our lives are also experiencing change. The rate of change will vary, but it’s change all the same.” Napas Art Gallery is located at 24/53 in Moo 6 of Cherng Talay, 800 meters from Dream Beach Hotel & Spa. Open 9am to 7pm daily, closed on Sundays. Fore more information, call 076-390-0700, or email napas.artgallery@gmail.com

his week saw cycling and art melded together in a rather unique way. As part of his Masters in Fine Art at Silpakorn University, local artist Kittipong “Pui” Ngowsiri, created a new way to bring engaging art to our Phuket community. Starting with many pieces of old and broken bicycles, he then gave them new life as a form of art-styled transport for three. But this was just the beginning of his journey with art, bicycles and recycling. The design then evolved, in typical Khun Pui style; a toy rabbit here, bunches of reclaimed fishing floats there, wild pieces of old steel, with the finishing touch provided by our Rawai garbage men – a glorious array of empty drink cans. With the concept of raising environmental awareness, recycling and responsible garbage disposal, Khun Pui plans to donate the cans to some of the many recyclers who make their living from collecting and recycling rubbish for cash. Starting on February 22 he took to the road with his new wheels, around the Rawai area, video documenting his cycle tour over 7 days. Included in his itinerary were key points of interest in

terms of art, culture and community. Setting off from the Phuket Art Village in Soi Naya 2, he went on to Oasis ed. Phuket for a workshop, up to Laem Promthep for the view, a stop at Rotee Art for a coffee, around the corner to Nakonnai ArtMuseic, down to the Sea Gypsy Village, Rawai Pier and Nai Harn Beach. Saturday night saw the culmination of Khun Pui’s vision, as he unveiled his concept and it’s manifestation as an Art Exhibition at the Phuket Art Village. Attended by a number of arts loving Phuket residents, the exhibition previewed the filming of Khun Pui’s cycling project. This inspired a lively discussion about the future of the project, especially in terms of its impact in creating greater connections between art and our Phuket community. If you should happen to see Khun Pui’s mobile construction of art, cycling & environment trundling along the roads in Rawai, do stop him for a photo. He might even have a spare seat for you to join him in his eccentric adventure. For further information please contact Khun Pui via 0894715653. Oasis Ed thephuketnews

A test of mathematical ability

B

ritish International School, Phuket (BISP) and Rangsit University’s College of Information and Communication Technology are proud to announce the winner of the 2015-16 Thailand Maths Challenge. Yu Qing Wu from Bangkok Patana school turned in a incredibly impressive performance to claim first place. Her achievement is all the more impressive given that she is still only in Year 11 at school and was competing with students up to two years older than herself. The finalists round was held at Rangsit University’s Sky Lounge, which was arranged by Dr Suttisak Jantavongso, Associate Dean of International Affairs at the University. Students had to complete three rounds of problem solving questions. The focus was on a branch of mathematics called Number Theory – which requires rigorous proof and mathematical logic. The competition was judged by organiser and BISP mathematics teacher Andrew Chambers, and fellow judge, Assistant Professor Wongsakorn Charoenpanitseri. Professor Charoenpanitseri was one of the coordinators for the World Mathematics Olympiad held last year in

Thailand, and so brought a great deal of experience into the judging process. Both judges remarked about how impressed they were by the high standard of mathematics on display. As Andrew Chambers remarked, “We have seen some truly remarkable young mathematicians today – and possibly some mathematical stars of the future.” Second place was also claimed by a Bangkok Patana student, Benjada Karprasertsri, whilst third place went to Santkorn Gorsagun from Mahidol University Demonstration School. The top three students were all offered full and partial scholarships to study at Rangsit University at the Col-

lege of ICT by Simon Meredith, Secondary Principal at BISP. Over 200 of Thailand’s top schools were invited to participate: international schools, bilingual schools, Thai private schools, and state schools in order to find the best young mathematicians in the country. The initial round was conducted at schools where teachers chose the students to represent them. The best students from this round were then invited to the finalists day at Rangsit University. BISP Headmaster Neil Richards said, “I am immensely proud that the school has initiated the Thailand Maths

Challenge, most particularly because of the partnership between the international and Thai communities, and the close collaboration with Rangsit University, who are to be congratulated for their foresight in offering this wonderful opportunity. “Mathematical ability is just as relevant now as it was before the onset of the computer age, and I hope that the Thailand Maths Challenge will inspire young people to pursue mathematics at the highest possible level.” For more information, visit bisphuketmaths.com or contact Andrew Chambers: achambers@bisphuket.ac.th

Here, we pick up where we left off, and will also explore the sweet truth of cancer.

Heart to heart

The mineral calcium binds with the mineral magnesium for bone strength. Without enough magnesium the calcium becomes free forming in your blood stream and collects in your arteries and veins scaring the interior walls and causing inflammation. Your immune system uses essential cholesterol for repair. But this cholesterol can, over time, form plague and blockages leading to heart attacks and strokes. In addition to this, studies have proven that the essential fat soluble vitamins K-1 and K-2 derived from fermented foods will also help keep the mineral calcium inside of your bones where it belongs and not running free form in your blood supply. The fat soluble K group of vitamins will support the friendly flora bacterial balance of your intestinal tract that represents at least 80 per cent

Dr Piyasakol pointed out that Thai medicine is safe and potent in healing various illnesses. He also indicated that nowadays traditional medicine can easily be found in grocery stores and hospitals, adding that the use of some of them is eligible for medical expense reimbursement. Meanwhile, the De@thephuketnews

of your functioning immune system. This in turn is positively or negatively affecting all parts of your body, especially your heart. Most conventional cardiologist MDs are looking in the wrong place when it comes to heart disease. The widely accepted belief that cholesterol is the cause of heart disease is only a myth; in fact, the associated problems linked to cholesterol are only an after-affect from the inflammation damage caused by calcium build up and scaring of the interior walls of the arteries and veins including lack of oxygen supply to the infected area, which are all in fact caused by excessive sugar intake. Heart disease is essentially a nutrient deficiency and not directly tied to cholesterol, 80% of which in fact is created by our livers, the other missing 20% of which needs to come from your diet. Working closely with his

team of informed doctors, former US President Bill Clinton proved this fact in his own life when he changed his diet to include more whole-food plantbased items that included vitamin K-1 and K-2 rich foods and NO refined white sugar, which effectively worked to reverse his own heart disease. Even in my own clinical case, I experienced a reversal of my heart disease condition by embracing the right diet and lifestyle, which saw an end to my previous bouts of physical angina heart pain. My high blood pressure and high fat blood triglyceride readings plummeted down to normal readings, and along with sugar, went away my heart disease symptoms.

In fact, the method in which cancer is detected relies on sugar: a radioactive drug is tagged to glucose (sugar) to make a radio tracer. S

outhern Thai food lovers are in for a treat when they sample the favourite traditional dish known as “Khao Yum” or “Khao Yum Pak Dtai” which is a ricesalad dish that mixes elements of both Southern Thai and Malaysian cuisines. Being a “yum” which

roughly translates to “mix” or “tossed” salad, this dish features a variety of vegetables and Thai herbs which provide for a rich source of fibre and nutrition.

In addition to the assortment of fresh vegetables and herbs, the dish comprises cooked rice and a unique dressing made from fermented fish sauce called “Budu”. This dressing is so distinctive, making the final product saltier, fishy and a little bit sweet. But thanks to the heavy use of herbs, the fish and innards, which are fermented by sea salt, aren’t too overpowering and blend well together in one’s mouth. Khao Yum may also be prepared with dried shrimp or fish, coconut flakes, sour green mango, pomelo, and a squeeze of lime, topped with fresh bean sprouts, thinly sliced fresh lemongrass and fresh kaffir lime leaves. You also might ask the cook to add dried red pepper flakes or chilli to make it more spicy. Also, it is generally not served with meat, making it an ideal healthy meal for those hoping to cut back on their meat intake. thephuketnews

COMMUNITY 21

Building community with rhythm everyone can be heard by the rest of the group. It’s a drumming democracy. Many drum circles around the world are organised with the main goal of bringing people together. By building stronger groups we strengthen the building blocks of our community, with rhythm!

ometimes we find ourselves in a group of people we really care about, but notice there isn’t much solidarity in the group. A “Facilitated Drum Circle” is a great activity for increasing unity and harmony of groups of people. In this article, I’ll talk about this amazing but largely misunderstood activity. A “Facilitated Drum Circle” is a musical event where all participants play a drum or hand percussion together while sitting in a circle. No musical experience is required, a professional facilitator provides the appropriate guidance for all participants. The goals of the facilitator are to ensure the event meets the group’s needs and to rhythmically empower people. Drum circles provide more than recreation or fun. They increase unity, improve physical and psychological wellbeing, and boost creativity. Facilitated Drum Circles are are used in many settings which include community events, team building sessions, school classrooms, wedding groups, and many different therapeutic environments. Sometimes I notice people at the end of an event with a big smile on their face and also tears in their eyes. They may report “hallelujah” moments or

The drum circle has two inner workings that never cease to surprise me. First, it is a rhythmical activity that promotes brainwave “entrainment”. This is when our brainwave frequencies attune to external rhythms we hear, usually engendering relaxation, wellbeing, and even excitement. Secondly, the deep sounds of bass drums and percussion reach our bodies not just our ears. These deep frequen-

Angsana Laguna Phuket recently raised and donated B28,410 to Phuket Panyanukul School as part of the hotel’s “Angsana In Love Delivery”. Each year, Angsana Laguna Phuket gives back to communities by visiting children or elderly persons in Phuket. Coinciding with the month of love, Angsana Laguna Phuket offered everyone a chance to give hugs and gifts for cash, with proceeds from each purchase of hugs, roses and teddy bears going into the charity pot. The initiative was led by Mr Brian Connelly, General Manager of Angsana Laguna Phuket and associates from each department including Khun Rungtawan (CSR Manager), Khun Kantima (Assistant PR Manager), Khun Sombat (Area Director of Revenue), Khun Sukanya (Training Manager), Khun Krit (Safety and Security Manager) along with two angels “Cupid Pai” and “Cupid Ann”, who all visited the special children school, learning centre, art room and children’s workshop.

The 27 -year-old Kyrgysztani native has been training at Tiger Muay Thai and Mix ed Martial Arts Training Camp in Chalong for the past two years, and recently made waves by defeating world No. 5 ranked female fighter Sarah Kaufman via unanimous decision in her UFC debut back in December on only a week’s notice. Nunes, meanwhile, is a seasoned veteran ranked No. 4 in the world at Bantamweight kg and riding a two fight win streak.

alentina She chenko seen here at the official F A win over Nunes, coupled with her short notice victory over Sarah Kaufman, could propel Shevchenko – who splits her time between Thailand and Peru – into a serious contender for the Bantamweight title, currently held by

Holly Holm who knocked out superstar Ronda Rousey last year. Coincidentally, Holm will be defending her belt on UFC 196 as well, against world No. 3 Miesha Tate. Shevchenko’s bout against Nunes will take place Sunday

eigh in held in as egas. morning ( Thailand time, March 6) and can be seen locally on Fox Sports. The headline bout for UFC 196 will see Irish phenom Conor McGregor ( 19-2) against American Nate Diaz ( 18-10) in a highly-anticipated match-up.

Big FAT bungles D2 season start FOOTBALL Matt Pond ed itor@classactmed ia.co.th

THE ORIGINAL START date for the 2016 Thai football season passed on Feb 28, and on Wednesday ( Mar 2) Phuket FC President MaAnn Samran went back to Bangkok to again submit papers to the Football Association of Thailand ( FAT) to confirm the team s placing in Southern Region Division 2. This is the third time papers have been presented. Any team wanting to compete in their respective regional division were required to again present papers confirming their players and the stadium where they will play, along with details regarding ownership of the club, contract information for their coaches and players. However, it would appear that things are slowly moving along, as at the meeting, chaired by newly elected FAT President Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang, it was announced that under a new game plan, Division 2 will now be divided into eight zones, up

three from the previous five, and that there will also now be the inclusion of a Division 3. It was also announced that from the unknown number of teams to compete in Regional Division 2, the first and second-placed teams of each zone will be entered into a play off which will lead to three teams being promoted to Y amaha League 1. However, it was still not decided which teams have actually ualified to play in ivision as FAT o cials have still to ex amine all paperwork submitted. Allegedly, confirmation of team entry into the division will be announced on March 12 along with the start date for the season, but don’t hold your breath. Those waiting to see the newly for med A ndaman Dragon in action won’t have to wait as they will take on Phang Nga FC, also caught up in the fiasco, in a friendly match at Surakul Stadium tonight Mar with kick off set for 7 pm. Entry is free to all. The Phuket News is proud media sponsor of Phuket F C.

TCT ease away in T40 CRICKET

L

ast years Phuket Cricket League finalists Patong and Thalang ( TCT) had yet another close encounter at the Alan Cooke Ground last Sunday ( Feb 28) with TCT holding on for the win and breaking further away at the top of the league table. The overnight rain had left the ground fresh, and a nice breeze greeted both teams for the eleventh match of the Phuket Cricket League. Poor results early in the season for Patong meant another loss for the Black Horses would all but end their chance of reaching the huket ricket eague final. Both teams were scrambling for players before the game and neither had 11 players at the ground. The coin toss fell the way of TCT and their captain Andrew McMillan choose to bat first against a man Patong side. The choice backfired when Pir Sami had McMillan out

Rehman ( 21* ) was j oined by TCT’s in-form hitter Hico McDonald. The pair added 7 8

runs in 55 balls before Patong captain Seemant Raj u ended Rehman’s lucky spree, caught by Morton for 58 ( 54) . TCT were at the over drinks break. Raj u, Sami and Simon Wetherell all picked up wickets in the nex t three overs as TCT slumped to 6/ 164. Alex Runhaar and Hossain Sylar guided T T to at the over drink break.

Shortly after the break, TCT lost Sylar 25 ( 27 ) and Runhaar 29 ( 37 ) , TCT 8/ 224. Patong brought the opening bowlers back on to clean up the tail. In the process the TCT tail of Paddy Ledeboer and Martin ill ( 25) were able to add another 36 runs. Hill was Sami’s third wicket of the day from his final delivery, addy ede-

After a feed at the Bondi Beach Bar, Patong set about the task of scoring 261 runs to stay in finals contention. TCT’s swing bowler Sylar made the task harder for the Black Horses when he took a wicket in his first over, . Patong captain Raj u ( 18) , missed a straight one from Sylar j ust as his side was starting to score freely. Imtiyaz Mushtaq and Stuart Hamilton guided Patong to 2/ 49 at the drinks break, 34 runs behind TCT at the same time. Mushtaq enj oyed the ex tra pace of TCT’s bowling change with Rehman coming from the lake end. Patong added runs in the next five overs but Rehman found the edge he was looking for with the last ball of the 15th over, PCC 3/ 92. The first ball of the th over brought the small crowd at the ACG to their feet. Key wicket Mushtaq 53 ( 44) sent a

Patong’s middle order pairing of Wetherell and Morton batted on with a degree of caution. Patong hit j ust three boundaries between the 15th-25th overs. Needing 141 to win from the last overs, the pair scored only 25 runs in the nex t 5.3 overs before Wetherell was caught behind off the bowling of McDonald. Boundaries were hard to come by and a six th wicket in the th over tipped the balance of the game firmly in TCT’s favour. Wickets fell quickly after the last break. The last man in Izhar Mohsin showed resilience with a smart knock of 23 runs from 16 balls. Patong 9/ 224 from 36.4 overs, ( Mushtaq 53 runs, Morton 42 runs, Sylar 3/ 45) .

What to look for this coming Grand Prix season BOX OF NEUTRALS Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com

A

fter 12 long weeks of off season, Formula ne roared back into life in February at the ircuit de arcelona atalunya for pre season testing. ith the season and its sorry tale of predictable racing now but a distant memory, focus is fully fix ated on the intrigue the season is already offering Formula ne s famished fans. ith the exception of Sauber, which was caught out by late calendar changes that brought testing earlier into the year, every team shook down its car during the

opening four days, and though testing data is notoriously difficult to read, possible narrative threads are already presenting themselves. I s F errari a Mercedes b eater? t s the uestion on the lips of every Formula ne fan can Ferrari overturn Mercedes crushing domi nance in The season, though one way tra c as far as ew is amilton and Mercedes title defences were concerned, offered glimmers of hope that the future could be a whole lot brighter. Take for one Ferrari s mammoth upturn in form be tween and , guided partly by design guru ames Allison. The car had already been decided when he was signed in , but

this year he earned a clean slate, and by all accounts the SF looks uick. The uiet air of confidence at Ferrari translated into it topping the timesheets on three of the four days and set ting the uickest lap overall. Advantage Scuderia. ut Mercedes car demonstrated demoralising reliability, setting a record laps over four days. t was completing so many laps that drivers ewis amilton and ico osberg had to swap themselves out of the car at midday because the physical strain was too much for their mere mortal bodies. Further, Mercedes only used the medium tyre, which is two steps harder than the ultrasoft tyre Ferrari used to set its headline time. Toppling the Silver Arrows in

won t be easy. W ill McL aren reco v er? arly signs were positive when the Mc aren onda completed laps of relatively uneventful test ing over the first two days. The problems it had with deploying electrical energy had greatly improved, as had the car s handling. n day three, the car was retired after laps with a hydraulic leak, and on day four the reliability gremlins that plagued onda in came back at full force, re stricting Fernando Alonso to ust three untimed laps. onda s F boss asuhisa Arai is in the process of hand ing over his duties to usuke asegawa as he prepares for retirement, but the soon to be motorsport chief could be set for a baptism of fire should

the problems of the first test prove anything other than anomalous. Can Haas score points on debut? The last time Formula ne welcomed new teams was in when Manor, otus, ampos, and SF were set to oin the grid. Manor changed its name to irgin, then Marussia, then almost collapsed in ecember before being resuscitated as Manor again for . ot us became aterham before collapsing in . ampos became ispania acing before turning into T and collapsing in . SF never started a race. y comparison, aas has had a dream debut. t logged laps with minimal fuss, and there isn t an adminis trator or li uidator in sight.

The team s secret is its exploiting of the rules to buy as many parts as is allowed from Ferrari and outsourcing the rest to experienced chassis builder allara. The result is a collection of parts that are tried and tested, leaving team principal unther Steiner only to find the Allen key to oin them all together. At the time The Phuket News went to press, only two days of testing remained before the season proper kicks off on March in Melbourne, Australia. t may only be testing, but is shaping up to be a fascinating year of motor racing.

Manager Louis van Gaal is wary of asking the Manchester born forward to take on too much responsibility too soon. V an Gaal said on Tuesday Mar he will have no problem keeping Marcus Rashford’s feet on the ground after his remarkable start to life at the club. It means that V an Gaal will have a tough j ob leaving the teenager out, even as Anthony Martial nears a return to fitness after a recent hamstring in ury. United’s manager is also concerned about the level of media attention that Rashford is facing, but is adamant that the striker is level headed enough to deal with it. “First, think that the media have to let him in peace and rest,” V an Gaal told press at United’s Carrington training base. “ Y ou are in front of his house and that kind of stuff. don t think that is beneficial

DRAGON OF THE BAY

Overpowering winds were said to be part of the reason Selma was unable to claim victory in the latest Bay Regatta. Photo Celine Verchere

D

SAILING

ragon design Selma bravely lost the recently held 35 boat Bay Regatta mostly as a result of the overpowering winds to a very skilled Thai crew aboard Tongfah that endured five days of unseasonable weather conditions by day and decadent parties at various beaches and resorts in the Malacca Straits by night. Selma’s designer Johan Anker, known as “the master of lines”, first brought his friend King Olav of Norway along as part of his crew on his 6 metre racing yacht Norna and dramatically won the 1928 Olympics in Zuiderzee Netherlands on a frigid and shallow Bay in the North Sea. Anker became famous for his Dragon design, which along with the 6 metres are still raced competitively all over the world.

Nearly a century later, and over 8,000 nautical miles east of Amsterdam, Johan’s sister ship Selma won her class this past December in the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta and missed another first by a narrow ten seconds last week in the Bay Regatta in the warm Andaman Sea out of Ao Por Marina on the east coast of Phuket. For the grand finale of what was reported as the best Bay Regatta to date, HM the King of Thailand sent the top Admiral in his Navy to present the medals and trophies in full regalia. Selma is skippered and owned by a salty, fortyish, flip flopping Frenchman, Cedric Rimaud who grew up racing antique wooden boats off San Tropez and Monaco in the Mediterranean. His love for wooden boats, coupled with a passion for the purity of metre class racing, has possessed and

led him to purchase two 6 metre boats in the United States, and two more in Europe, and shipping them for restoration and resale to the skilled boat builders at Modify Marine on the hard at Krabi Boat Lagoon. Cedric is a messiah of sorts and is organising interested sailors to come to Krabi to sail these yachts ranging from 30 to 44 feet and ultimately form their own class of boats that will not be strangled by the frustrating and often unfair handicapping systems. Metre class racing is very simple: Whoever crosses the finish line first, wins. The balance of this year’s crew on Selma hailed from China, Holland, France, Russia, England and myself, a bowman and Captain from the freshwater Great Lakes in Northern Michigan. There is an indescribable spirit to racing and maintaining these all

wooden boats that cut so close to the water. It feels like they have a soul of their own, deep and mystical and that we humans are merely temporary caretakers. They are classically simple. Owners and crew snuggle into the sails or string hammocks from the boom and sleep beneath the stars. I felt humbled to be a part of this rich history. And, the exotic flavours of Thailand provide a year round seascape that entices competitors from all over the world to these easily accessible regattas. Profound cultural diversity here in Thailand, as well as Malaysia, Singapore and China, has mercilessly held my attention over these past several months. Indeed, to breeze past the start with the screams of the Russians awkwardly holding down the wind-

ward rail aiming for the first mark, a towering karst on an azure sea left me, a very seasoned sailor, simply awestruck. Perhaps the spirit of King Olav or the beloved Thai King himself is responsible for this feeling, like they were sailing along? I’m not sure, but I will definitely be on Selma and possibly even skippering Erne, which is close to finished in Krabi for the upcoming Top of the Gulf Regatta in Pattaya this April 30 through the May 4. Let’s get out on the water and make some memories! If anyone is interested in experiencing 6mR classic sailing in Thailand, especially in Phuket or Krabi, please get in touch at: www. facebook.com/6mRThailand or contact Cedric on 095 959 9733 or by email: cedric.rimaud@hotmail.fr Captain Michael Sutherland – USA
