ourists on Kata Beach were bemused on Wednesday (July 2) – some were a little alarmed – to see police and Navy Marines in flak jackets carrying combat rifles trudging along the iconic white sands.

With them was Karon Mayor Thawee Thongcham who, police politely suggested, should speak

with people who have set up illegal makeshift buildings on the beach.

Thawee is currently under a black cloud, being investigated for backing mafia taxi activities in Kata-Karon, and money laundering. He has also been accused of dereliction of duty for not clearing illegal structures off Kata and Karon beaches Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin, head of the investigation into mafia taxi activities, which is also looking

into the mayor’s finances, told him, “Don’t worry. If you have any problem getting encroachers to move, the Army and the Navy will support you.”

Before the beach visit, dozens of police and antimoney laundering experts rummaged through the offices of the Mayor, his two deputies, the town clerk (palad), the head of the planning and engineering department, and the social services department.

As the investigators arrived they spotted Deputy Mayor Ittiphon Sangkaew, also under investigation, tiptoeing out to his car. He was persuaded to come back into the office to talk with them and to unlock cupboards in his office.

Investigators found a number of personal bank account books belonging to the suspects

and went through mounds of paperwork looking for connections between the suspects and taxi-related crimes or money laundering. They also seized papers from the Social Security office.

In the office of the palad, Veerasak Anek-ongsawat, they found a solid-looking safe. In the absence of the only person with the keys – Veerasak – they sealed it with duct tape.

Gen Paween told Thawee and others in the meeting room, “You must hurry up and clear the beach.”

He told Karon officials who were taking video and photos of the proceedings, “You must give those to us and then delete them so that they don’t get made public in an incorrect way.”

They then went to the beach so that the mayor could tell

From there the investigation team split up, some raiding property belonging to the five suspects, in Vichit, Cherng Talay and Patong.

he head of Sirinart National Park has filed papers to block the pending issue of three titles covering 256 rai of land which, he says, is in the park.

The three pieces of land cover forest along the edge of the cape between Nai Yang Beach of protected park land in Nai Yang along Phuket’s northwest coast.

The coastline contains two or three untouched beaches that are accessible only from the sea or by battling through old-growth jungle.

Park chief Kitipat Tharapiban, who took office last month, told The Phuket News on Wednesday (July 2) that these latest filings are part of a larger and very complex investigation into the legality of land titles covering some 3,000 rai of land in the park.

He told The Phuket News that the prime mandate of the national park is to take back encroached forested land for the state. He showed The Phuket

“We are filing our opposition to the [application for titles on] the three plots, complete with evidence, to the Land Department and the Governor for consideration. We believe

the SorKor 1 [occupation rights paper on which the application for upgrade to full Chanote ownership] is unlawful, and the applicant has no right to own the land.

“According to the applicable law, the land had to have been in use since [for agriculture] before 1954. The people making claim to the land said that it has been in use since 1937.

“However, we checked aerial pictures from 1950 to 1967, and the land was still virgin forest then. People started to use the land only after the establishment of the park [in 1967]. It’s encroachment.

“If they want to claim they were there [before 1954], they must prove it.”

Mr Kitipat told The Phuket News: “I want to let all those people who are thinking of buying land close to the park that we have people who can go to check for free whether the land is legitimate or not.

This will prevent people from being cheated and wasting their money.”

Mr Kitipat said he will also be working with the Land Department to check the history behind a number of land deeds. He will also look into the people who were involved in issuing questionable deeds.

“If officials were or are in the wrong, they will be charged with dereliction of duty as defined in [Thai Criminal Code 1956] Section 157, or conspiring with others to certify falsified or invalid documents or information as covered in Section 162.

“As for people who present false information to government officials, they will be charged under Section 137.

These cases will be handled soon by the Department of Special Investigation.”

“There is going to be an investigation and there will be court battles. If they [the targeted individuals and companies] lose, we will cancel their rights [land titles] and everything on the land must be returned to the original condition.” thephuketnews

Complaint alleges officials ‘failed in their duty’ THREE LOCAL MEN ON Wednesday (July 2) laid a complaint at Cherng Talay Police Station alleging that provincial and local officils had failed to do their duty completely with regard to Surin Beach.

In a bid to push along the complete clearing of public land at the beach, Cherng Talay locals Plat Jantarasopin, Bamrung Rungreung and Suta Prathip Na Thalang made the complaint to Cherng Talay superintendent Pol Col Porworn Pornpromma, .

Mr Plat said, “We believe that buildings were erected illegally next to Surin Beach on what is public land.

“We have collected a petition signed by local people who want to punish the trespassers and their accomplices. Some of these buildings are still standing, so the demolition of the encroaching buildings has not been done completely. That is why we are here today to deliver this [complaint].

fter handing over more than 5,000 pages of depositions and evidence to the Phuket Provincial Chief Public Prosecutor in the “mafia” taxi investigation on Tuesday (July 1), Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin is preparing to move on to the next area of his investigation.

Gen Paween, the Commander of the General Staff Division, Provincial Police Region 8, told The Phuket News, “Today, I feel relieved that I and my team have been able to hand all these cases over to the top prosecutor on the island.

“Now we can move to the next step [in the taxi crackdown]. Patong and Phuket International Airport are on the list for sure.”

Thawee arrived at 9:30am with three people from his legal team. He was then made

to suffer the indignity of being loaded into the paddy wagon for a ride to the Provincial

Chief Prosecutor’s Office.

He was accompanied on his ride by three accused taxi drivers, Malit Bensu, Aree Matlai and Suthat Saikhao.

At his office just off Sakdidet Soi 1, the Chief Prosecutor, Pisitpol Phumisirisawas, told The Phuket News, “This case is attracting a lot of interest because the issue has caused problems for many people and has had an effect on tourism.

“For this reason it has been designated a special case and the findings of the police and our findings must be reported to the Region 8 Public Prosecution Office in Surat Thani.

“I will be setting up a prosecutors’ committee to work on this because there is a great deal of detail in the evidence that has to be considered.

“But it won’t take long to deal with the taxi cases [including Thawee’s case] – about a month. Then we will decide who we will prosecute.”

Rogue Russian nabbed for B22m property fraud

I

mmigration police in Bangkok on Sunday (June 29) arrested a Russian national suspected of cheating investors out of more than B20 million in Phuket property deals more than two years ago.

Acting on a warrant issued

by Phuket Provincial Court in September, 2011, police arrested Vladimir Antochili, 29, at an apartment on Soi Ramkhamhaeng in the Hua Mak area of Bangkok at 2.30pm.

Antochili, a resident of Sweden, is accused of being part of a gang of Russians who misappropriated funds intended for property purchases in Phuket after setting up a

The hunt for Antochili and

his accomplices was launched after the owner of a property for sale in Chalong reported to police that a buyer had paid

money to the gang, but he, the seller, had received nothing.

Investigations revealed that the gang had received three payments of about B3 million each, as well as a three-per-cent commission from the seller, for a total of B10.5 million.

The gang members are also accused of fraud in another, similar property deal worth B12 million.

Mystery over man drowned in fountain pool AN UNIDENTIFIED MAN drowned in the Saphan Hin dancing fountain pool on the edge of Phuket Town early on Saturday morning (June 28).

Muang police and Kusoldharm Foundation rushed to the scene after receiving a phone call from a witness.

The witness told police that

the dead man seemed to have been drinking heavily with friends, to the point where he apparently decided to jump into the fountain pool.

The friends managed to rescue him and pulled him to the wall of the pool. But instead of climbing out, the drunk man pushed away from the wall. He

repeated this several times, each time being rescued, until finally he sank. At this point his drinking companions left.

Kusoldharm volunteers tried, but could not locate the missing man − the fountain pool covers an area of 1,000 square metres − and had to call in a diver, who did eventually

manage to find the corpse.

The dead man had no ID on him; just B103 in one of his pockets. Police believe he was Burmese and estimated his age about 25 to 30 years old. They described him as “skinny and dark-skinned”.

The body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

Crackdown on visa runs ‘in high gear next month’

THE MINISTRY OF FOReign Affairs has written to embassies and consulates in Thailand and the Royal Thai embassies and consulates worldwide confirming that the crackdown on visa-run abuses will come into full force on August 12.

The website ThaiVisa.

Com quoted the ministry as saying that the crackdown is aimed at preventing visa runners who abuse the visa exemption scheme from working illegally in Thailand.

In the letter to the embassies the Foreign Ministry confirmed earlier information that visa runners will be prohibited from entering Thailand as of August 12 this year.

Long-stay visa applicants are advised to acquire appropriate (ie, Non-Immigrant) visas at Thai embassies or consulates before coming into the country.

The national commander of Immigration, Lt Gen Pharnu Kerdlarpphon confirmed to The Phuket News on May 13 that his officers were already applying strict controls on “out-in” visa runs, saying “Lots of nationalities come to Thailand on tourist visas but they come to work.

“I really want them to do the right thing, not try to dodge around the law and evade taxes.”

wo weeks from now, on July 18, Phuket’s German community will officially get a new Honorary Consul when Anette Jimenez Hoechstetter is sworn into the post by the German Ambassador to Thailand, Rolf Schulze.

The swearing-in will be a highly formal affair, attended by senior Phuket figures including the Governor, the provincial police chief and the head of immigration.

Mrs Jimenez Hoechstetter – who is the daughter of the outgoing incumbent, Dirk Naumann – was chosen from a field of three candidates after a two-and-a-half-year-long process, including a year, she says, to think about whether she really wanted the post.

At the time she was working in a senior managerial position for a corporation in Germany. “It was a big decision; I would have to more or less drop everything,” she explained to The Phuket News.

Mrs Jimenez Hoechstetter was born in Bangkok 40 years ago, at a time when being born in the country conferred citizenship. She left in 1996, “but I always said that one day I would come back, I would come home. The whole situation converged to one point.”

In October last year she received the call to say that she had been chosen for the post of honorary consul, and in February this year she arrived in Phuket.

She has been helping her father in his bypass road office since then, learning the ropes.

Mr Naumann has built a reputation for his forthright, sometimes blunt commentary on what is wrong in Phuket, particularly with taxis, tuktuks and jet-skis, and Mrs Jimenez Hoechstetter says that she, too, can be a straight talker. “In Germany I had no qualms about making my opinion clear.”

But in her new role she will be taking things carefully at first, aware that directness can be a double-edged sword,

“I have not yet developed a clear picture of what political mantraps I intend to step into, if any.

“I’m probably more careful than my father. But I can be quite direct if I think I’m in the right, or if I see someone being wronged, especially a child – then I can become

quite fierce.”

Mr Naumann, who has been trying to step down for a couple of years, is delighted his daughter was chosen for the post. “I’m very happy with the choice and grateful that the

ambassador chose her,” he told The Phuket News. “I will stay on as much as my daughter lets me and wants me, but I will try to disengage.”

Apart from helping her father until she takes over, Mrs Jimenez Hoechstetter is studying Thai language. She speaks German and English fluently, but admits that her

Thai is “mediocre”.

She has already gained some good insights into the psychological aspects of the job. For example, she says, part of the job lies in ensuring that people feel comfortable with the bureaucracy of, for example, applying for a visa to Germany.

“T he average hu man doesn’t deal very well with documentation,” she says.

“They come here, to some extent, expecting or even demanding reassurance.”

She says that she is “very keen on social fairness”, but admits that one steep learning curve she must climb is politics. “I’m not very keenly politically minded. I follow politics because its part of the job and I have to.”

Phuket is a place where politics and social fairness can be closely intertwined, often in conflicting ways, but with her father’s 12 years of experience in the post, she has a solid source of very good advice to call on as she works her way into the job.

ice-Governor Jamroen Thippayapongthada, Cherng Talay OrBorTor chief executive Ma’an Samran and other relevant officials went to Surin Beach last Friday (June 27) to check how things were going on the beach. Almost 100 per cent of the west side was cleared.

There was yet some resistance to change. There were still some plots on the beachside with concrete edges to mark territory, and one restaurant had yet to demolish six onemetre-high concrete posts.

When police and the deputy chief of Thalang District approached the owner to tell him to get rid of the posts he shouted at them but eventually ordered his staff to knock the posts down.

Loudly, he ordered his waitresses to take some water to the officials. The officials told him, “No thanks.”

“People say I’m influential,” the restaurant owner told The Phuket News. “But I’m not.”

V/Gov Jamroen said the fate of the businesses and buildings on the east side of the beach path is still being discussed.

“We are discussing the public land document for Surin Beach at the moment because, in the past, some budget was approved to build on the land.

We are discussing what we should do with the land now.

“We are thinking about how the buildings looked before the tsunami [of 2004] and how they look now.

“Also, we want to establish the true status of the land. If it has been changed [from the original purpose of giving local people a chance to make a

“The people we helped before don’t need help anymore [because they are rich]. I heard that the buildings have changed hands four or five times.

“As to reports that businesses have been paying an annual ‘rent’ of B5 million a rai, I have already asked the head of OrBorTor Cherng Talay to check the information. Then we will follow the due process of the law.

“The issue is being discussed with the Attorneygeneral of Thailand and the Office of the Council of State.

OrBorTor boss Ma’an could not immediately confirm whether the buildings on the east side were safe from demolition or not.

“We don’t have a conclusion yet. We handed a letter to the Office of the Council of State to see how we can use public land or how to systematise it.”

An old local approached the officials and said: “Take them down, dig them out!

We have been giving them opportunities for business for a long, long time.”

Plainly passionate about the topic, the old man pointed out that Surin Beach was visited in 1959 by HM King Bhumibol and HM Queen Sirikit, who called it “Golden Sand Beach”.

It should be returned to the King, he said. He pointed to some pine trees that had appeared in pictures taken of Their Majesties.

News that Phuket initially had many planned projects such as coast roads around the island and a tunnel in Koh Kaew, but the plans took too long and in the meantime, the land intended for these projects had been illegally occupied.

“I want to see cleaner beaches all over Phuket be-

cause Phuket’s selling points are its beaches, the sea and the natural environment.

“We must organise the beaches for the better. We must work for the local people, not for business people. Before, the province and an international aid fund contributed B13 million as far back as 1996, the

intention being to build these buildings for locals. Right now we have businesses occupying three or four buildings each.

This is not right. They should be for local people only.

“I don’t agree with these people building things up like this. The buildings are hiding the landscape.

“The taxi drivers are not the only group of people [involved in criminal activity at Surin Beach]. The people who are encroaching on public land are the real ‘influential’ people.

“Our country has good natural resources and good tourism but it is not protected properly.

“If no one helps to keep an eye on it, it’s going to be destroyed one day. Then no one is going to come and visit us.

Where will our income come from then?” he asked.

The cleaning of the beach has hit one group of local entrepreneurs: the masseuses.

Some 30 of them, too, barged into the assembly on the beach, demanding to know where they could place the massage beds where they do business.

They asked Mr Ma’an and V/Gov Jamroen to provide a solution for them.

V/Gov Jamroen listened and gave his approval to a plan to allocate five points along the beach, each with enough room for 10 massage beds.

Jaw Sittidech, 60, a representative of the masseuses, said, “We don’t know where exactly the beds will be placed. We are still waiting for OrBorTor to make that clear.

“I have been massaging people since I was a young woman until now. In the past, there were no massage beds; just mattresses,” she added.

those who had complained said that they now accepted [that he was telling the truth] and decided they did not need to attend the meeting.”

He added, “Special police teams will work within the law if someone resists the work of officials. We will solve all the problem and this will be success for Phuket, for sure.”

Capt Phetrat Tienchan of the Royal Thai Navy said, “Everyone can be sure that we will treat all people fairly and equally.”

4 hurt in shotgun attack T hree men and one woman were shot behind Wat Ta Rua in Thalang shortly before 1am on Sunday morning (June 29) after going fishing in a nearby lake.

All four were taken to Thalang Hospital for treatment and are expected to recover fully.

According to Thalang police, the group had just finished catching fish in a lake behind a palm-tree plantation near Wat Ta Rua and were sitting close together, divvying up the catch, when someone opened fire with a shotgun.

Kittisak Pongpan, 32, was hit by four pellets – two in the right arm, one above his right eyebrow, and one in the back.

Dechanan Pongpan, 38, got a pellet in the right arm.

Somjai Tee-uthit, 49, was hit by six pellets, four in the right leg and two in the left leg, while Saijai Bunrat, 50,

Of the 135 people who gave urine samples for the “purple pee” test, 20 tested positive – equivalent to just under 15 per

cent of the total stopped in the exercise.

Of these, 17 were sent to a “behaviour adjustment” camp conducted by Srisoonthorn Health Office, while the other three, all underage and students (one from Kathu Wittaya School and two from Phuket Technical College) were collected by parents and school heads of discipline.

A similar exercise the previous evening in Thalang detected 53 drug users aged 18 to 35, who were also sent to the behaviour adjustment camp.

No drugs were confiscated at the checkpoints. However, most of those who tested positive admitted to drug use.

SECURITY COMPANY SGS now has two new staff – one man and his dog.

The man is nine-year Phuket resident Russell Distance Russell. The dog is called Kay. They started work at SGS on Tuesday (July 1).

In addition to being hired as a manager, Russell is to set up Phuket’s first K9 unit, with dogs trained for patrolling with security staff, and for detection of various substances.

told The Phuket News, “With experience across all levels of security provision, management and training, Russell brings a fresh approach to security on the island.

“As a fully qualified and certified K9 trainer and handler, he will also be bringing his K9 skills to the fore as SGS look to develop Phuket’s first Security and Detection Dogs.

olice on Monday night (June 30) arrested a major methamphetamine dealer at the fish shop he ran in Phuket Town.

Veerayut “Ang” Sansakrit, 30, was arrested in possession of 230 grams of crystal meth (ya ice) and 12,000 meth pills (ya bah). The haul has a street value of B3 million.

Police also confiscated from him a Spanish-made Astra-Unceta y Cia Guernica .22 pistol and five bullets.

Police caught him in a raid at 8pm last night on a fish shop opposite the King Rama IX Park which he opened as cover for his real business, running team distributing drugs to various points around Phuket Town.

He is believed to be connected to a national drug ring run by a man known only as Lerm, who is believed to run things from within Chiang Rai Prison, close to the border with Myanmar, from which most of Thailand’s methamphetamine

A WOMAN DRUG MULE was caught last Friday (June 27) as she got off a bus from Trang at the Central Bus Terminal with B100,000 worth of methamphetamine pills in her underwear.

Pornsiri Chamnan, 29, was identified as part of a drug ring operated by Pairote Duangwiang – who was arrested on June 24 with two others.

After the police counted the contents of her panties – 387 meth pills – she was charged with possession of a category one drug with intent to sell.

Also arrested on June 26, as part of action ordered by Police Region 8 to get rid of

crime, weapons and drugs, were three petty criminals, two caught in possession of drugs and on holding a homemade gun.

Narcotics police arrested Ko Sae-guay, 37, after they found a handmade “Thai pradit” gun in his house.

He was charged with illegal possession of a gun and ammunition.

They also arrested Anurak Tangsurat, 20, and his uncle, Danai Tangsurat, in possession of 23 methamphetamine pills and 0.68 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

The two were charged with possession of drugs.

ot long ago, a property developer in Phuket explained why he was ripping large chunks – legally, it turned out – from a hillside in Phuket. He wanted to give the land a good view. Besides, he said, if the land was not ripped out and landscaped, it would be “wasted”.

That attitude is one that seems widely pervasive in Phuket, and not necessarily only among developers. Town planners, too, seem to regard nature as something that needs to be manipulated, made more “useful”. It needs to be tamed.

This is not a new view of nature. In Europe, during the Age of Reason, nature was regarded as chaotic and rather dangerous. It had be made orderly. The height of this orderliness was the “parterre”, the French gardens with their geometric patterns of gravel and paving edged with tame

plants. In Phuket, some of the municipal “parks” have very little greenery and a great deal of concrete. Maintenance costs are probably lower, but they are rather soulless spaces.

One suspects that it is this attitude that allows apparently dozens of people, possibly hundreds, to justify stealing parts of the Sirinart Marine National Park and the no-hunting areas in the centre of the island.

Some are simply replacing “useless” old forest growth with useful plants such as rubber trees and banana plants that will give them a living.

The land is no longer wasted.

Other have much grander dreams: hotels and property developments that can convert “wasted” land into billions of baht. Hooray for entrepreneurialism.

The news this week that bad titles for 240 rai in Sirinart

have been cancelled shows just how profitable rescuing wasted land can be. It was estimated that if the land were sold, it could fetch B25 million a rai – that’s B6 billion in total.

It’s happening all over the world, of course. Brazil’s Amazon rainforest is a prime example. This gigantic generator of oxygen is disappearing at a frightening rate as people turn jungle into “useful” land.

The same is true of Indonesia, where the annual setting of fires to clear “wasted” jungle sets off coughing fits in half of Southeast Asia.

But unlike countries such as Indonesia with high population growth, Thailand’s population is relatively stable.

Few are suffering from a total lack of living space.

No. In Thailand, turning “wasted nature” into useful land is driven almost entirely by a lust for riches.

Military says it is not exempt from own corruption scrutiny

T

he National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has ordered the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) to rid the armed forces of corruption.

“Even soldiers like myself are required to abide by this [anti-corruption] law. The NCPO has ordered the PACC to inspect weapons procurement projects as well,” said assistant army chief Let Gen Phaiboon Khumchaya, who oversees legal and judicial affairs for the junta.

“No exceptions are made; soldiers are civil servants, too.

“People who have not done anything wrong need not worry,” he added after a meeting with the PACC. At the meeting on June 26, the PACC was told to implement moves to prevent and tackle corruption in state agencies.

Citing the national economic and social development plan, Gen Phaiboon said Thailand has set out to obtain a score of at least 50 out of a total score of 100 on the Corruption Perceptions Index.

half of 8,000 corruption cases lodged with the PACC are being investigated, he said.

Meanwhile, Jare Phanprueang, deputy secretarygeneral of the House of Representatives, in his capacity as acting secretary-general of the House, said on July 1, he had ordered a panel to probe all procurement projects undertaken by the lower House which are suspected of lacking transparency. THE TOURISM AUTHOrity of Thailand has proposed to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) that the national holiday to celebrate HM Queen Sirikit’s 82nd birthday anniversary be extended.

The extended holiday was proposed by TAT officials during a meeting with Admiral Narong Pipattanasai, Navy commanderin-chief and deputy chairman of the NCPO. They reasoned that this would help to boost the flagging

tourism sector by encouraging domestic travel.

Backed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the TAT proposed that, in addition to August 12, the Queen’s Birthday – which falls on a Tuesday this year – August 11, the Monday, also be declared a holiday.

Japan set for shift in policy over defence J

apan loosened the bonds on its powerful military on Tuesday (July 1), proclaiming the right to go into battle in defence of allies, in a highly controversial shift in the nation’s pacifist stance.

After months of political horse-trading and browbeating of opponents, conservative Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his cabinet had formally endorsed a reinterpretation of rules that have banned the use of armed force except in very narrowly-defined circumstances.

“I will protect Japanese people’s lives and peaceful

existence. As the prime minister, I have this grave responsibility. With this determination, the cabinet approved the basic policy for national security,” Abe told a press conference.

“There is a misunderstanding that Japan will be involved in war in an effort to defend a foreign country. But this is impossible. It will be strictly a defensive measure to defend our people.”

Abe has faced down widespread public opposition to the move, which climaxed at the weekend when a middle-aged man attempted suicide by setting himself on fire.

Some 10,000 protesters gathered on July 1 near the prime minister’s office to oppose the plan, Japan media reported.

While the move to allow socalled “collective self-defence” needs parliamentary approval, the control of both chambers that Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party enjoys renders this merely a formality.

China has warned against the move, saying it risks the remilitarisation of a country that is still not sufficiently penitent over World War II. The move has received backing from Washington

With 9,300 square metres of film and sound stages, sprawling backlots for outdoor shoots as well as two indoor television studios, the complex is one of Asia’s largest and most modern video production centres.

More than 500 production staff from 18 countries are working on Marco Polo, which is being produced by Hollywood heavyweight Weinstein Company and occupies most of the new studio, set next to a man-made lake and forest.

UK lawmakers urge more bullish stand on Gibraltar B

ritain should take a tougher stand towards Spain in disputes over the contested territory of Gibraltar, including using legal action and more diplomatic protests, a parliamentary committee urged on Tuesday (July 1).

Spain disputes British sovereignty over the peninsula, which has long been a point of contention in relations between the two countries, with tensions increasing over the last year.

The Foreign Affairs committee, a group of lawmakers who analyse the work of Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, urged the government to “get off the fence and take a tougher line with Spain”.

Syrian rebel groups spurn Islamic caliphate moves SYRIAN REBELS, INCLUDing the main Islamist factions, said Monday the creation of a caliphate by the Islamic State (IS) was “null and void”.

“We see that the announcement by the rejectionists of a caliphate is null and void, legally and logically,” the groups said in a statement, using a pejorative term to refer to the extremist Islamic State.

Among the signatories were the Islamic Front, Syria’s biggest rebel coalition, and Majlis Shura Mujahideen al-Sharqiya, an alliance in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor near Iraq, that includes the Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front.

The statement also “warns Muslims and all jihadist factions from putting their capabilities” at the service of the IS. The signatories of the statement have all been at war against IS – previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – since January.

The rebels said the announcement of a “caliphate” was divisive and a bid to “abort the blessed revolutions in Syria and Iraq”.

The invite comes at a time when ties between Japan and South Korea are a low ebb over Tokyo’s recent statements that there was no evidence to corroborate the testimony of “comfort women” who were forced to work in Japanese military brothels.

lbert Einstein referred to compound interest as the “eighth wonder of the world”, adding, “He who understands it, earns it … He who doesn’t, pays it.”

Knowing the power of compounding – and practicing the art of patience – are why some people have the seemingly magical ability to amass great wealth, apparently from nothing, over long periods of time.

Compounding may be the “eighth wonder”, but it is hardly rocket science.

Basically, if you make sensible financial choices today, you will reap the benefits of those choices next year. Likewise, the wise decisions you make next year (and in the years after that) will bear fruit in every subsequent year.

Obviously, compounding is about the long-term view, but the magic doesn’t work if you never start to save. Without the necessary discipline to save money consistently now, and the faith in the long-term positive effects of compounding, you’ll never see any results.

One very easy way to discipline yourself – to condition your thinking so that your monthly savings become as vital an expense as the mortgage or car payment – is to choose a specific date in the distant future (maybe even the specific day of the week), and plan toward that day.

Whether or not you can conceive of it, and whether 20 or 25 years seems like a long way off to you now, that future day you are focusing on will eventually become the present, and your goal will have been reached. And by concentrating on your goal in greater detail, you can even calculate what your money will be worth on that day.

So the lesson is clear: when allocating that money, it is important that you program yourself to view investing as a long-term pursuit. The actual amount you save is immaterial, but the longer you save it, the more you will benefit from compounding.

Don’t forgo all of life’s pleasures; just be aware that every penny you save today will have much greater value in the years ahead, while every cent you spend frivolously will have zero value in 20 years.

Today we find ourselves in a strange investment climate.

Historically, deposit rates or the return on government securities were around 5 per cent a year. But today they are 0-2 per cent.

But do not despair; sooner or later the old status quo will return – banks that pay interest, bonds that pay yields, stocks for long-term investment.

At some time in the next few years – it may be as soon as five years, it may be longer – the conditions that led to the buy-and-hold mentality of the ’80s and ’90s will be back, and returns on stocks will once again be more consistent.

If you are approaching the age where “Estate Planning” is important, then it is important to understand the concept of geometric progression.

If you were to set up a family trust today, every single baht you save adds value; not just tomorrow, but forever.

How much can you earn through geometric compounding? Over the next 25 years at 10 per cent a year, your money would grow by 11 times. Over the same time frame at 20 per cent it would grow by 95 times.

After 30 years – at 10 per cent and 20 per cent – you would see growth of 17.5 and 237 times, respectively.

Because compounding is based on the time and the growth rate – not the amount you set aside – you need only to put it to work on as much money as possible for as long as possible.

In my view, frontier markets – the still emerging of the emerging markets – are probably too volatile for one’s stomach (or lifetime), but they are perfect as an asset class to use for generation planning, because of the likelihood of higher compounded returns.

Just make sure you choose a major fund house, one that isn’t likely to disappear in the next 40 years, and then let the investment run.

Geometric compounding is how the world’s wealthiest families became wealthy in the first place, and it is how their dynasties are sustained. You can use the same simple tools to pass down a similar legacy to your own family.

PTA organises seminar on IT for tourism firms THE PHUKET TOURIST Association (PTA) and the Software Industry Promotion Agency (SIPA) are to arrange a three-hour joint event entitled Phuket Creative Tourism this afternoon (July 4) at The Metropole hotel in Phuket Town.

Tourism industry’s confidence to come back in second half T

he Thailand Tourism Confidence Index plunged to a new low of 87 points in the second quarter of this year, the lowest in three years.

The Index in the Q2 dropped well below the benchmark (100) deemed to be a normal level to encourage business confidence.

Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) president, Piyaman Techapaibul, said the drop reflected growing concern by business operators over the political situation. It was a predictable decline in the index carried over from a similar negative trend in the first quarter.

“The index should rebound to 95 in the third quarter as measures and reforms implemented by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) are set to improve business sentiment,” she said.

“Some of these measures include the crackdown on illegal business operators and reorganisation of public vans and buses.”

Also, the NCPO’s decisions on the economy – paying rice farmers and ending dubious projects, for example – helped to lift confidence.

The TCT expects tourism in the third quarter to expand 5.23 per cent, making it pos-

sible to attract 6.84 million tourist arrivals. For Q4, it predicts arrivals should reach 7.85 million improving 12.46 per cent year-on-year.

If these figures can be achieved, the TCT estimates that Thailand will see 26.84 million international tourists by year-end, up slightly from the 26.55 million visits recorded last year.

That’s the optimistic scenario. The pessimistic view sees arrivals declining by 4.92 per cent to 6.18 million visits in Q3, with a 4.01-per-cent

increase to 7.26 million visits in Q4, for a year-end total of 25.59 million visits, down 3.62 per cent from last year.

There are signs the optimistic view may prevail. Airports of Thailand (AOT) has reported that Thailand’s aviation business continued to grow during the first eight months of the current 2013/2014 fiscal year (which started October 1).

AOT president Makin Petplai was quoted by MCOT online as saying the number of passengers using airports in Thailand totalled about 60

million between October 1 last year and May 31 this year, up 4.2 per cent from the same 2012/2013 fiscal period, while 419,000 commercial flights took off and landed the six airports managed by AOT, an increase of 13.2 per cent.

For the remainder of the fiscal year ending this October he predicted growth would be around 2 to 3 per cent, based on the success of promotions and efforts by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to persuade more foreign tourists to visit Thailand. TTR Weekly

After she saw the status, Holley drank a half bottle of wine and several large vodka cocktails, took her newly ex-boyfriend’s Ford Focus, and ran it through the bowling alley where he worked. She received a nine-month jail sentence at Bolton Crown Court.

Half!: In 2007, a 43-year-old man in Germany thought his divorce proceedings were dragging on a bit too much.

Chinese man books cinemas out of spite A

“Hu Xiaoyun: I was so poor when we were in our fourth year at college in 2007 that I could not afford just two film tickets,” the man said in a posting on China’s Twitterlike Sina Weibo.

“You said when you left for Beijing that I will always be that way.

“I have been working hard for the past seven years because of that sentence and today I spent half my monthly

income to book all the seats in Beijing’s IMAX cinemas on June 27.

“I just want to say maybe your choice back then was wrong.”

Company employees made the find when they ran the plush bears under an x-ray machine during a routine inspection, the Mexico City public prosecutor’s office said last week.

The human remains “ap-

pear to have been recently exhumed,” the office said in a statement.

Authorities contacted and arrested the man who was mailing the package, who said he bought the skulls at a popular downtown Mexico City market.

The man said the skulls “are in demand abroad by people who practice santeria,”

an Afro-Caribbean syncretic religion.

Santeria, which mixes west African Yoruba traditions with Catholic rites, grew out of the slave trade to the Americas and is practiced in the Caribbean as well as places like Florida and Brazil.

Bear crashes through roof, eats birthday cupcakes A BLACK BEAR CRASHED A BOY’S first birthday party in Alaska last week and ended up eating all of the cupcakes that were saved for guests.

The bear, which fell through the skylight in the ceiling of the living room, caused a commotion and left several people clamouring for the door.

“I was literally in the room and I heard this cracking,” said Glenn Merrill, the father of the boy, “And the next thing you know, there’s this bear that, I mean, literally fell right from the sky.”

During the commotion, the bear ran

towards the cupcaked on the living room table and ate them all. The family eventually led the bear outside of the house, but it stuck around and peeked its nose through the window.

Bet ts bought the cheese at a local supermarket in Cambridge and found the tooth when she finally bit into the the chunk. She took it to a dentist who confirmed that it was the tooth belonged to someone else.

Family pics: hang ‘em high!

I

love visiting a friend’s home for the first time and exploring the photos they display. Like a private exhibition, the images display memories they treasure most and scenes that give them great pleasure to revisit daily. Weddings, travel, kids, monks, graduations, silliness, family, pets, whatever but together it says “my life”.

Just recently I realized that although I have literally millions (possibly billions) of photos stored on a number of different digital devices, there are only three photos printed and hung on the walls of our house. The catalyst for this realization: discovering that my young son has almost no idea what his late grandfather looks like. Our walls lacked stories, the family, friends and important memories weren’t there to build the picture of our life, instead just a gaping hole.

Petitioning to save the sea will also be pledging their commitment to work with those government bodies in achieving their goals. The petition will outline the top dozen or so marine protection issues which, at a minimum, must be dealt with if there is to be any future of marine-based tourism in the Andaman region. The issues include:

A

s anyone who has spent much time in Thailand knows that officials here are fond of making grand promises of sweeping changes, usually in the form of “crackdowns”.

These crackdowns are often published in advance, are mostly for show, and thus end up with little lasting effect. Things invariably end up back the way they were. Therefore, anytime we hear of a big “crackdown” or “clean up” of some big problem plaguing the island, it must be met with cautious optimism. But things may be changing.

At no point in history has the state of our oceans been so dire, and the need for action so great. This week the Global Ocean Commission released their Final Report. Their opening paragraph outlines the urgency simply and poignantly: “It is no exaggeration that all life on Earth, including our own survival, depends on a healthy, vibrant ocean.

Containing an almost unfathomable diversity of life; billions of us rely on it for food, clean air, a stable climate, rain and fresh water, transport and energy, recreation and livelihoods. Our ocean is in decline. Habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, overfishing, pollution, climate change and ocean acidification are pushing the ocean system to the point of collapse. Governance is woefully inadequate, and on the high seas, anarchy rules the waves. Technological advance, combined with a lack of regulation, is widening the gap between rich and poor as those countries that can, exploit dwindling resources while those that can’t experience the consequences

All is true, and reflects the situation in Thai waters pretty well. So what do we do about it? Well, we must think globally and act locally.

If we use the recent success of the tuk tuk/taxi mafia “crackdown” as an example, under our benevolent dictator “Uncle” Pryuth, we may now have the best chance ever of achieving lasting change for Phuket and the Andaman Sea. The general has recently made some big promises in the area of environmental protection, and has even appealed for input from public and private sectors on how to improve Thailand.

For this reason, several local marine conservationists, myself included, are creating a petition which will be signed by over 40 researchers, NGOs, and others involved in marine conservation in the Andaman region.

The petition will be addressed not only to General Pyuth and the NCPO, but also to the heads of each department responsible for marine protection in the Andaman region, and will be written in both Thai and English. Signatories of the petition will not only be asking the government for action, but

•Enhancement and enforcement of existing laws in marine national parks, sanctuaries and fisheries.

•Reef protection in the form of enough and properly installed mooring lines for reef users.

•Better enforcement and stiffer penalties for boat-owners who anchor on coral.

•A list of required sustainable practices for reef users, reviewable by patrons and inspected periodically by government officials to ensure compliance.

•The end to illegally collected sea shell and coral trading businesses.

•Stronger protection of shark, ray, dolphin and whale species.

•The island wide ban of shark fin soup and other shark-derived products.

•Stricter penalties and greater enforcement for resorts and businesses caught discharging pollution into klongs.

•Regulations requiring that builders and land owners prevent sediment run off from construction sites or other land stripped of vegetation.

•Trawlers should be required to use the “TED” (turtle excluder device) to prevent protected sea turtles and other large bycatch such as sharks, whales and dugongs from being injured or killed.

•Support beach and reef clean-up programs as well as anti-littering education.

Fishing and marine-based tourism supports countless Thai families, and responsible fisheries management will ensure there is food for future generations. This is just a partial list of the things that need to be done if there is any chance for a future in marine based tourism in the Andaman. Our oceans and the human race are intrinsically linked. The survival of both is up to us.

ajonkiet International School Phuket students, teachers and parents formally concluded the 2013-2014 academic year with a number of events last week. On Monday (June 23) 13 aspiring young artists displayed their works which will decorate the school's halls next year. Then on Wednesday (June 25), KISP's Performing Arts Club put on a fantastic musical performance of Matilda, based on the famous book by Roald Dahl. To culminate the final week, on Friday (June 27) the school held the Leavers Day assembly, which was kicked off with a musical performance of The Gruffalo Show by dozens of luminated and cheerful early learners students. The show was followed by a Fashion Show by KISP's Fashion Club (see story on page 14).

To formally mark the end of a busy and great year in the new school building in Kathu, the new School Director Mr Permkiat Ketkul addressed students, parents and teachers: “I would like to extend a huge thank

you to all of you for coming here today to support both the children and the school. We have reached the last day of our third year as a school and I am tremendously proud of how far we have come,” he said. “The staff and children of KIS have been working very hard this year and particularly over the past couple of weeks to prepare for the endof-year shows.”

The director went on to announce changes in management structure and new appointments for the 2014-2014 academic year as follows: In addition to Mr Permkiat officially

taking on role as School Director, Ms Nicola Chokkuea has been named Deputy Director (Academic) while Ms Cherish Trakarnboonchai will be the Deputy Director for non-academic matters.

have worked for a number of different schools in a number of different countries during my career as a teacher and I very much enjoyed working with all the children in all of those schools even though some of them really were not very good places to work.

HeadStart International School, on the other hand, has been one of the best, if not the best school for which I have worked and it set me thinking about what really makes us a good school.

huket’s Italian food scene received a long-awaited jolt last Monday (June 30) as the Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Ospitalita Italiana event at Cape Sienna’s Plum Restaurant in Kamala.

Chefs from five different restaurants from across Phuket prepared a ninecourse meal for the event, which also serves as an award ceremony where the TICC certifies authentic Italian restaurants.

Plum Resatuarant, White Box, Vero, Leo & Mas, and La Carbonara were all awarded with certifications of the Ospitalita Italiana project, which promotes real Italian cuisine, made by Italian-trained or native chefs, with imported ingredients.

ne of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong is the Luk Yu Teahouse on Stanley Street, which still has its original Art Deco fittings of brass and rosewood. It is famous for its delicious dim sum and the abrupt manners of its waiters. David Tang – the owner of Hong Kong’s China Club and founder of Shanghai Tang – has been going for years; his great-grandfather took tea there every day in the same cypress wood booth

Dim sum translates as “touch the heart,” or “fill the gap.” It includes dumplings, rice noodle, and shaomai – buns made with beef, pork, shrimp, vegetables or even fruit. The ingredients may be

steamed, fried, or deepfried.

Each steamer or plate usually comes with portions of three or four. In Hong Kong, drinking tea and eating dim sum together is known as Yum Cha (“tea drinking”). Chefs undergo years of apprenticeship to learn the vast repertoire of dishes: one expert claims that Cantonese dim sum encompasses more than a thousand varieties, though most restaurants will specialize in only a hundred.

Westerners are most familiar with Cantonese dim sum, but China’s northern regions have their own unique dishes.

Dim sum originated with the caravanserai tea houses of the Tang Dynasty (618907), when travelers would stop to rest, sip tea and have a snack – consequently ‘touching the heart,’ rather than cramming the stomach.

By the twelfth century, dim sum had evolved into the forms and names we use today: little prawn dumplings, bamboo leaf packets, mooncakes, spring rolls, and sausage shaobing.

or many travellers, Wiang Sa, a town 23km south of the provincial capital in Nan, is a must. One of the things that lures them there is bicycles — vintage bicycles, to be exact.

Huen Rod Theep (Northern dialect for “House of Bicycles”) boasts one of the Kingdom’s largest collections of two-wheeled antiques, many of them over a century old. According to Jamary Tengtrirat, daughter of Supot Tengtrairat, who owns the collection, it’s not a museum and was never meant to be a tourist attraction.

“We prefer to call this place a learning centre for people who are interested in bicycles,” she told me during my brief

visit. Housed in a large wooden building that stands behind the family’s petrol station on Chaofa Road, Huen Rod Theep can be traced back to the family’s former business, when they settled in Wiang Sa some 60 years ago. Back then, Supot’s mother ran a shop selling bikes imported from the West.

The idea was sparked in 2006, when Supot found a hoard of well-kept bike parts in his mother’s house, bringing back childhood memories of times when he helped her assemble them. Since then, he’s collected vintage bicycles, obtaining them first from Nan and other Northern provinces. The search later extended to other parts of Thailand, then to neighbouring countries such as Myanmar and Malaysia, and eventually all the way to Europe.

Now, about 150 bikes are on display at Huen Rod Theep, each in working

condition. Most of the bicycles at Huen Rod Theep are European brands, such as Raleigh, Triumph, Phillips, Armstrong, BSA, Gazelle, Elswick and Dunelt from Britain; Adler, Anker, Bastert Werks and Kalkhoff from Germany; Bianchi from Italy; King from Norway; and Locomotife from Holland. While some of these veteran makes still thrive, others have long been history. (If you’re familiar with more than five of these names, you’re probably an antique yourself.) The oldest of the collection is a Hochrad penny-farthing from Germany, dating to 1880.

For those who are really into vintage bicycles, perhaps one full day is not enough to appreciate Supot’s collection. Each of the bikes comes with different details. Take the bike lamps, for example. Here you’ll find illumination systems powered by different sources, from oil and candles to acetylene gas and

dynamo. There are literally hundreds of things you can marvel at from the exhibited push bikes, from frame designs to brake and drivetrain systems, tyres, wheels, saddles, racks and other accessories.

If you have ever had the experience of building a bicycle – even a mountain bike of which the parts are much easier to find – you’ll know that Supot’s vintage collection requires much more than money. Jamary said there is one strict rule that her father requests all visitors to Huen Rod Theep to follow, however: Don’t ask about price – none of the items are for sale.

n this special day, it is worth noting that American-Thai connectivity – political, economic and cultural – go back rather further than many assume. Furthermore, Thailand (or rather Siam as this nation was previously called) was the very first Asian nation with whom the USA established diplomatic relations.

American merchant ships are reported to have docked in Siam (up until 1939, Thailand was called Siam) since the early 19th century, selling and trading arms, fabrics, and other goods, though Christian missionaries were among the first Americans to propagate and settle in Southeast Asia.

The start of official diplomacy between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Siam began with the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, which was finalized on Marcy 20, 1833, between Siam’s Ministers of State, under his majesty King Rama III, Nangklao and American envoy, Ed-

mund Roberts, whom was sent by President Andrew Jackson to negotiate the first treaty with an Asian nation.

Siam had previously established diplomatic and trade relations with several European nations–namely Portugal, France, and Britain, but this was the first time that Siam was recognized as an equal trading partner with a Western power. Thailand duly became the first Asian nation that USA entered into treaty relations with, even before Japan or China.

The next significant treaty between Siam and the USA was signed on May 1, 1856. This was the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation. As a result of the treaty, an American missionary, Stephen Matoon, was appointed the first US Consul to Bangkok.

Siam became an ally in the First World War, signing the Treaty of Versailles and becoming a Charter Member in the League of Nations in 1919.

The following year, a new US-Siam treaty, negotiated between the King of Siam, Rama VI, Vajiravudh and his American counterpart, President Woodrow Wilson, came to the table. The treaty was signed by acting Secretary of State, Norman Davis on December 18, 1920 and represented the fairest of all treaties up to date, sparking a period of treaty revisions between Siam and all its trade partners.

In 1932, Siam drafted its first constitution, becoming a Constitutional Monarchy. In 1936, the government opened up negotiations with its trading partners, particularly with the United States, of which a new Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation was signed on November 13, 1937.

Though Siam, soon to officially become Thailand, was initially neutral during WWII, geopolitical factors and circumstance led to Thailand to come under the sway stance of Japanese influence and demands. Japan forced Thailand to declare war on the USA. However, in Washington, the Free Thai movement saw that the declaration of war against the United States was never delivered, as Thai and US diplomats worked closely to free Thai from Japanese coercion.

After the war ended, Thailand and USA continued to strengthen their ties.

The current Monarch, King Rama IX, Bhumibol Adulyadej (born in Massachusetts) ascended the throne of Thailand at the age of 18 in 1946. Soon after, Thailand was admitted as the 55th member of the United Nations. And Thailand would be one of the first countries to send troops to assist US forces in the Korean War. During the Vietnam War, Thailand became the Uncle Sam’s prime base of operations for supply channels, mission launches, and other operations during the conflict.

Thailand also became a prime R&R hub for American serviemen in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Up to today, the mutual relationship has continued to thrive, driven by mutual trade, security, and other interests.

The two nations continue to share bonds of friendship, shaped both by similarities and attractions as opposites.

A warm and special relationship endures between the New World nation and this Old World one, which first took its modern form as the Buddhist kingdom of Sukhothai in 1238.

DID YOU KNOW? Thailand’s beloved king, his Majesty Bhumipol Adulyadej, the ninth monarch of the current Chakri dynasty and the world’s longest surviving monarch of present times, was born at Mount Auburn Hospital, Massachusetts, USA on December 5, 1927.

According to the latest US census, there are approximately 200,000 Thai Americans, or about .05 % of the entire US population.

The first Thai student to pursue studies in the United States was Mr Phraya Sarasinsawamiphakh, who came over with an American missionary and graduated from New York Medical College in 1871, and was the father of former Thai prime minister (1957), Pote Sarasin.

The largest Thai community outside of Thailand is concentrated in southern Califirnia. Indeed, Los Angeles is often considered by many as Thailand’s 78th province (Thailand officially has 77 provinces), as it hosts the first and only “Thai Town” outside of the kingdom.

General Manager – DusitD2 Phuket resort Phuket News (PN): Where do you hail from in the US; how did you come to live in Phuket and how long have you been here?

Kelly Lewis (KL): I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and attended the University of A r izona, joined Hyatt Corporation and started my career at Hyatt in Hawaii, from where my work has, over the years, taken me to many places. Namely, Bermuda, Saipan, Jamaica, Malaysia and back to the US. And three years ago, I moved to Phuket.

PN: What aspects of Thai society have particularly impressed you as an American residing here?

KL: The Thai culture and people are the most important to me. Their integrity and work ethic creates a supportive environment whether you are a GM or in house keeping.

It is a new learning adventure every day you wake up, and a most pleasant one I must add.

The training and development of people is very gratifying for me, but I also believe that is an American trait as well.

PN: W hat are your favourite places on the island and why?

KL: Bang Tao beach area and the “Reggae” bar, where you will find most @thephuketnews

celebrating July 4 this year?

KL: We are doing a full blown American cook out with live music on the outside road and patio area right here on the side of DusitD2, 100 metres down from Hooters.

It will be similar to a Thai street market. We actually purchased two real BBQ grills and will be g r illing ever y thing fresh all the way down to the American beef!

Of course all the condiments will accompany it with the baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad – the list is endless!

PN: Tell us about your role in both Phuket’s American and international communities ...

KL: I would have to say our work with the Good Shepherd Foundation. We were able to build the Burmese [Myanmar] children [of mig rant workers] a proper school and get them out of the fishing villages.

There were many involved in this project and my heart goes out to all on this very special holiday; the school today is in full operation. Godspeed, sister!

PN: What makes you proudest to be an American on July 4?

KL: Everything we have fought for – everyone’s freedom, not only our own but so many countries – truly is something to be proud of.

PN: Any special message for your fellow Americans in Thailand and/or at home?

KL: It is truly a blessing to live here in Thailand and enjoy everything it has to offer and don’t forget to give back!

Jerrold Kippen (JK): Originally I am from Spokane, Washington, a relatively “small town” on the eastern side of the state of Washington. But I attended university in Southern California and then law school at the University of California in San Francisco. After law school I was chosen to act as the law clerk to the Chief Judge of the United States Federal District Court in Guam (a territory of the United States) for two years. Guam is only a few hours east of Manila in the Philippines and so I spent my holidays while living there visiting places in Southeast Asia. I fell in love with Thailand and when my clerkship ended, in 2003, I decided to move to Thailand to make a life and career here. Olaf Duensing and I opened Duensing Kippen, Ltd in May 2010 with offices in Bangkok and Phuket.

PN: What aspects of Thai society have particularly impressed you as an American residing here?

JK: The relaxed and welcoming attitude of people here in Thailand is intoxicating. As I say, I did really fall in love with this place.

PN: What are your favourite places on the island and why?

JK: Wow, that’s a tough one; there are so many beautiful and interesting places to see in Phuket. If pressed I would have to go with the beaches. My favourite recreational activity is kitesurfing and there is little better than a windy day at Nai Yang beach on water with kite in the air.

PN: How will you be celebrating July 4 this year?

JK: In my family the fourth is a time for the ex-

tended family to get together, barbecue, make homemade ice-cream, and watch baseball. So, funny enough, I usually take that weekend, like this year, to make calls to my family and friends.

PN: What makes you proudest to be an American on July 4?

JK: In my opinion, one of the greatest things about the United States is what a mix of people and cultures from all over the world it is.

For example, I believe there

are over one million Thais [sic] living there.

PN: Any special message for your fellow Americans in Thailand and/or at home?

JK: Happy fourth! And, on a professional note: be aware of recent changes to USA tax-related laws implicating US citizens and businesses abroad. In light of such, consider carefully your personal and corporate business decisions going forward accordingly.

IN BRIEF FDA approves robotic exoskeleton

The US Food and Drug Administration approved an exoskeleton from ReWalk Robotics, a device meant to help people deal with their paralysis.

The assistive walking device includes robotic legs and a 2kg backpack that carries the system’s computer and batter.

ReWalk’s computer runs on Windows and is controlled through a wrist device that sends signals to the entire exoskeleton.

The device allows users to stand, sit, and walk using the controls.

T he exoskelet on, which has a weight limit of 99.7kg and meant for people who are between 161 and 192cmtall, is the first such device approved by the FDA and will cost about US$69,500 (B2.2 million) when it finally hits the market later this year.

Lesson plans using iPad

Apple’s latest update of the iTune U education app will allow teachers to create lesson plans and instruction material on the iPad. While there are already over 750,000 educational materials avilable through iTunes U, teachers will be allowed to use the iPad’s camera to take photos or record video and incorporate it into lesson plans.

Teachers will also be allowed to push notifications and moderate forums through Discussions, a new feature that allows students to communicate more effectively on class lessons. Currently available in the iTunes App Store.

Realist Fifa game yet EA Sports released a video last week explaining just how realistic this year’s FIFA 15 game will be when it becomes available in September.

The game’s lighting system was overhauled to produce authenticlooking players. In addition, the game will include visible breathing (watch the player’s chest pulse with every gasp of air), hair movement, and the field as well as the player’s shirts will become weathered as the game goes on.

The new features will be included onlyin Xbox One, PS4, PC versions of FIFA 15 this September.

Google’s Android OS to spread across cars, watches, TV

oogle set out last Wednesday (June 25) to expand its Android empire beyond smartphones to cars, watches and televisions.

The technology titan laid out a sweeping Android vision at the opening of a sold-out developers conference in a keynote presentation streamed online to millions of people across the world.

“We are beginning to evolve our platforms beyond mobile,” Android and Chrome teams chief Sundar Pichai said of how Google’s twin operating systems are being adapted to work with one another and with new types of computing hardware.

Google’s goal, according to Pichai, is to have its software serve be a foundation for applications, services or digistal content delivered seamlessly across the increasing-

ly diverse array of Internet-linked screens in people’s lives.

A new LG G smartwatch and a freshly-announced Gear Live smartwatch by Samsung that both work with the “Android Wear” platform will be available at the online shop Google Play by the end of the day Wednesday, according to Pichai.

On-stage demonstrations included ordering a pizza in seconds, fielding reminders and messages, and using voice commands on smartwatches.

An eagerly awaited Moto smartwatch will join the Android Wear lineup later this year, according to Google.

“These are the first three watches, but there are more on the way,” Pichai said.

An Android Auto version of the software

tailored for cars, synching smartphones with in-dashboard screens and controls, is being shared with an array of auto makers and vehicles “should be rolling off lots” by the end of this year, according to Google.

Man racks up B14m bill in roaming charges

A

n angry businessman who received a 14-million-baht phone bill for mobile data roaming charges has filed a complaint with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said.

The businessman, whose name has been withheld, received the bill after he used data roaming services on his smartphone while he was abroad for a month.

Takorn said the NBTC had instructed Dtac and True Move, two of the three major mobile operators in Thailand,

He said the NBTC will on Thursday meet representatives of Google’s Play Store, a digital distribution platform for applications for the Android operating system, and mobile operators to discuss plans to limit spending on mobile content and applications to 1,000 baht, and to send short messages to alert mobile customers who install mobile applications for the first time.

For as much of a spectacle Transformers: Age of Extinction is, no film with that much action and explosions should be just under three hours.

W

hat do you think director Michael Bay thinks when he gets a whopping US$250 million budget to make a new film? From the looks of his latest movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Bay is trying to see what he can get away with.

It’s not that this is a terrible film, but when people start walking out of the cinema for “bathroom breaks” and don’t come back then your blockbuster is just way too long.

The film starts out in prehistoric times, when ancient Transformers detonated something called the “seed” which killed all life on earth. Then we’re back in present-day rural Texas, where Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and his friend Lucas Flannery (TJ Miller) buy an old semi-truck they hope to sell for parts to help Cade’s daughter pay for college.

Little do they know that the semi-truck is a beaten down Transformer that is being hunted by the US government. A corporation led by Joshue Joyce (Stanely Tucci), figured out how to create Transformers of their own in an effort to “protect themselves” after the “Battle of Chicago” in the previous film caused so much destruction.

Using a newly-discovered metal, (“transformium”, the lifeblood of the Transformers), KSI scientists created Galvatron – a Transformer created from data inside Megatron’s severed head. At the same time, an elite CIA unit called “Cemetery Wind” is formed

by agent Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer), which hunts down Transformers with the aid of Lockdown, a Transformer bounty hunter.

Yes, the plot is convoluted and hard to follow within the film’s narrative.

The only thing audience’s need to know is that, while it is difficult to keep up with, the film is not as metalliclybland as you may think.

Without a doubt, audiences will find themselves laughing at the unique situation in which Wahlberg’s character finds himself: meeting his daughter’s boyfriend for the first time. A nice touch.

Shane Dyson (Jack Reynor) is introduced during a chase scene early in the film and shows off his skills as an Irish rally-racer.

This is the only thing that comes close to resembling normal day-to-day human interaction. Throughout the movie, this tension between father and boyfriend is heightened to humorous levels and helps bring the film to a relatable place.

This film needed that because, well, there are tons of metallic aliens fighting.

For as much of a spectacle Transformers: Age of Extinction is, no film with that much action and explosions should be just under three hours. Bay’s notorious overly-produced, ultra-polished look is not enough to keep anyone entertained for more than that (save for Armageddon). It’s a shame, since this installment of the Transformers film franchise had the potential to become a bit more fleshedout. Transformers: Age of Extinction could have been told in a smaller dose.

World Cup frenzy sparks potential remake

With World Cup action becoming more tense by the day, Warner Bros. have begun discussions with director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow; Go) to remake the 1981 film Escape To Victory.

The film is about a group of allied POWs who plan their escape during a football match against their German captors and stars Sylvester Stallone, Pelé, Bobby Moore, and Michael Caine.

According to reports, Gavin O’Connor (Warrior; Mr & Mrs Smith) is working on a script for the potential film.

Ridley Scott to direct The Martian

Matt Damon is set to star in Ridley Scott’s next directorial project, a film adaptation of Andy Weir’s ebook The Martian, set for a 2016 release date.

The film will tell the story of an astronaut who was caught in a major dust storm after landing on the red plant. His crew sets off back to earth, thinking he is dead.

Director Drew Goddard (World War Z; Cloverfield) was previously attached to the project but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts.

Dusky Southern Thai stunner breaks beauty norm

ainstream beauty standards in Thailand may be on the verge of a significant transformation – that is if the recent Miss Thailand World beauty competition is anything to go by.

Thai TV audiences and “netizens” were flabbergasted – and many of them relieved – last week when 22-year-old Nonthawan “Maeya” Thongleng of Surat Thani province was crowned Miss Thailand World 2014.

After all, the 173-centimetre-tall Southern Thai beauty – who had the darkest skin tone of all 28 finalists – may represent a minority on contemporary Thai beauty stages, but in reality is more representative of the majority of olive- and tan-skinned Thai females, who are often made to feel insecure by a pop-culture and mass-media which have religiously emphasised and promoted “healthy, white skin”.

“I’m heading to the beach to get a beautiful tan now!” posted one lightskinned Phuket-based Facebooker, Charuayporn.

Maeya – who will represent Thailand at the 64th edition of the Miss World pageant in London in December this year – certainly has everything to be grateful for now; the prestige came with a handsome

In the past, I could hardly speak English and was afraid of conversing with foreigners. I challenged myself ... I knew this would push me to develop new skills,” she said in a press statement.

“I am now far more confident and able to converse much better in English and this will be a tremendous help when I represent Thailand at the Miss World 2014 competition in London at the end of this year,” she added.

“The benefits I gained from taking Stamford’s International Program have helped me in every aspect of my life, and given me a strong base in English with which I need to succeed.”

Laguna Phuket Golf Club gets a facelift GOLF

fter a year of renovations, Laguna Phuket Golf Club finally re-opened their upgraded first nine holes last week.

T he state- of-the-ar t course was redesigned by Paul Jansen, lead golf course architect at Faldo Design, and will be open to the public at half the price (now available for B1,800) for a full 18-hole round (two rounds of ninehole play).

The remaining nine holes will still be unavailable due to further renovations but club officials say the entire course will be fully-operational by January 2015.

Curse of former Tour champions continues CYCLING Health scare forces Serena exit Tennis star Serena Williams was forced to bow out of the Wimbledon double after a viral illness was diagnosed during a match last week.

Playing with her sister Venus, Serena had only served up four double faults before doctors monitored her blood pressure and recommended her retirement from the tournament. Serena had been knocked out of the singles events by Alize Cornet in the fourth round of the competition.

“I thought I could rally this morning, because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me,” Serena said after.

here could have been five former Tour de France winners lining up at the start in Leeds on Saturday (July 5) but instead there will be three, and one is unlikely to even finish in the top 20.

It is a measure of how the fortunes of those who have reached cycling’s summit can change so quickly.

The official record books show that the champions from 2010 to 2012 were Andy Schleck, Cadel Evans and Bradley Wiggins, yet none has the slightest chance of riding into Paris on July 27 wearing yellow.

In the case of Australian

Evans, he is no longer able to compete over a threeweek Grand Tour and was shifted from the Tour team to the Giro d’Italia by BMC this year.

The defence of his Tour crown in 2012 saw him finish seventh. Still, Evans wouldn’t give up and was joint leader with the American in 2013 but slumped to a 39th-placed finish.

At 37, Evans is no longer able to maintain his form through to a major tour’s last week.

So to Wiggins, who only two years ago made history by becoming the first Briton to win the world’s biggest and most famous cycle race.

He followed that up with Olympic timetrial gold, his

fourth Games title following three on the track.

Yet while last year he missed the Tour through a knee injury, this time around he has simply been judged not good enough by Team Sky. The potential for a personality clash with reigning champion and team leader Chris Froome, ensured the popular 34-year-old was disspensable.

As for Schleck, the problem is very different. He finished second in the Tour three years in a row from 2009 to 2011, eventually being awarded the 2010 victory after Alberto Contador was stripped of his win for doping.

Yet Schleck crashed at the 2012 Criterium du Dauphine, breaking a bone in his lower back, and missed the Tour

that year.

Si n c e c o m i n g b a c k , Schleck has been far less than a shadow of his former self and finished 20th at last year’s Tour.

What’s more, Schleck is only 29, the same age as Froome, and should be in his prime. Quite unlike Froome, he was a brilliant junior tipped for great things.

But perhaps, just like Evans and Wiggins, his time has come and gone, yet before its own time.

New Zealand’s Vincent gets life ban for fixing CRICKET DISGR ACED FOR M ER New Zealand batsman Lou Vincent on Tuesday (July 1) was banned for life from cricket for match-fixing, admitting he was a cheat who had shamed the sport and his country.

“My name is Lou Vincent and I am a cheat. I have abused my position as a professional sportsman on a number of occasions by choosing to accept money through fixing,” he said in a statement.

The punishment, confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board, stems from one-day matches that Vincent admitted he helped rig in English county cricket.

His former Sussex team mate, Naveed Arif, was also banned for life last month after admitting similar corruption offences.

The ECB said in a statement that Vincent pleaded guilty to 18 breaches of its anti-corruption regulations.

Four charges related to a Twenty20 match between Lancashire and Durham in June 2008. The remaining 14 concerned two fixtures played in August 2011.

“[The ban] once again highlights our resolve to keep cricket clean and rid the game of the tiny minority who seek to undermine the sport’s integrity,” said ECB chief David Collier.

Vincent, 35, has given additional evidence to International Cricket Council anti-corruption investigators about his involvement in fixing in five countries between 2008 and 2012. Among his allegations were that a “worldfamous international” dubbed “Player X” recruited him into the murky world of matchrigging.

“Speaking out. Exposing the truth. Laying bare the things I have done wrong is the only way I can find to begin to put things right,” he said.

Australia hails new golden boy Kyrgios TENNIS

ports-mad Australia hailed Wimbledon sensation Nick Kyrgios as its new hero last week, lavishing praise on “a good bloke” who has the game to beat the best.

Kyrgios, just 19 years old and ranked 144th in the world, stunned world number one Rafael Nadal 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in one of the biggest upsets the tournament has ever seen.

His improbable victory set up a quarter-final against Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic, sending the Australian media wild.

“Astonishing. Remarkable.

the Sydney Morning Herald.

The lanky Kyrgios, who gave up a promising career in basketball to focus on tennis, became the first wildcard in 10 years to make the last eight at the All England Club.

He is also the first player ranked outside the top 100 to defeat a world number one since Andrei Olhovskiy stunned Jim Courier in the Wimbledon third round in 1992.

“In a performance that reverberated from the heart of the All England Club across the world, the 19-year-old from Canberra has pulled off one of the greatest upsets in tennis history,” said the Sydney Daily Telegraph.

Australia has been desperate to find a new tennis star with veteran Lleyton Hewitt having potentially played his last Wimbledon and Bernard Tomic widely seen as arrogant and not well-liked.

Even Prime Minister Tony Abbott was impressed.

“Extraordinary perfor-

mance @NickKyrgios. Australia couldn’t be prouder of you - what a win & what an amazing attitude!,” he tweeted.

The Canberra-based Kyrgios, whose father is a GreekAustralian and his mother a Malaysian-Australian, first picked up a racquet at age four and has never looked back.

Kyrgios said he was fired up by an interview his mum Norlaila gave to Australian television before the match saying she believed Nadal was too good for him.

“It actually made me a bit angry,” Kyrgios said after the match.

ionel Messi, Neymar and Robin van Persie make the headlines, but the World Cup’s real heroes have been goalkeepers like Tim Howard, Guillermo Ochoa and Julio Cesar who throw themselves into the line of fire.

“Two words .. TIM HOWARD #respect,” was the simple Twitter comment made by Belgium’s captain Vincent Kompany just minutes after his country beat the United States on Tuesday (July 2).

Howard’s 16 saves, some at point blank range, two spectacularly flicked over the crossbar, were a record for a

goalkeeper in a World Cup match since 1966.

The US defence seemed unable to resist the Belgian attack of Mertens, Divock Origi and Eden Hazard. US coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Howard kept the team in the game right to the end. The Americans had chances to equalise right until the final seconds.

“How Tim played tonight was just phenomenal,” Klinsmann said. “As the game went on, on the back of Tim’s performance we got back in the game.”
