usinesses along Surin beachfront will be demolished and beach vendors removed from the sands ew ear s a o fi a s vowed this week, with demolition orders signed and Navy security personnel at the ready to handle any resistance.
The move is to restore the beach to “virgin” status and aims to bring to an end the ongoing saga to clear the beachfront that began more than 16 months ago. The move also includes a full ban on beach umbrellas, including those brought to the beach by tourists. Also, the beach will be closed to tourists for three to seven days while the huge demolition order is carried out.
Most of the demolition orders were signed by the previous Phuket Governor s t ansomwong onfirmed Lt Sompop Khamkana of Royal Thai Navy’s Third Area Command. “Because of the timing, we were j ust waiting for the new Governor (Chamroen Tipayapongtada) to oversee the proceedings,” Lt Sompop said.
