usinesses along Surin beachfront will be demolished and beach vendors removed from the sands ew ear s a o fi a s vowed this week, with demolition orders signed and Navy security personnel at the ready to handle any resistance.

The move is to restore the beach to “virgin” status and aims to bring to an end the ongoing saga to clear the beachfront that began more than 16 months ago.

The move also includes a full ban on beach umbrellas, including those brought to the beach by tourists. Also, the beach will be closed to tourists for three to seven days while the huge demolition order is carried out.

Most of the demolition orders were signed by the previous Phuket Governor s t ansomwong onfirmed Lt Sompop Khamkana of Royal Thai Navy’s Third Area Command.

“Because of the timing, we were j ust waiting for the new Governor (Chamroen Tipayapongtada) to oversee the proceedings,” Lt Sompop said.

olice are hunting for a Bangkok man suspected of being part of a gang of credit card thieves who managed to evade arrest when one of his accomplices was apprehended during a shopping spree in Chalong last Sunday (Nov 29).

Police have so far seized around B1 million of items believed to have been bought with the cards.

The arrested man, 59-year-old Pithawat Akaratithiweerakul (aka Kawang Faipetch or Anuchit Faipetch) from Phitsanulok, was presented to media at a press conference held by Deputy Superintendent Col Pinit Sirichai at Phuket City Police Station on Tuesday (Dec 1).

Pithawat were arrested at the Tha Chatchai police checkpoint while he was attempting to leave the island with valuable items he bought with stolen credit cards.

Pithawat confessed that some items bought with the stolen credit cards that had already been sold in

Bangkok included two Apple iPhone 6S and 10 Apple iPhone 6S Plus phones and two Apple iPad minis.

He and his accomplice, 41-yearold Nakrop Darunpan from Bangkok, are alleged to have been stealing credit cards from foreigners and buying expensive items with them.

Both suspects were seen at Tesco Lotus in Chalong by undercover po-

lice who had been assigned to follow them when they were suspected of being involved in suspicious activities at a Tesco Lotus in Khok Kloy, Phang Nga. “At noon on Sunday, an undercover o cer spotted Pithawat using a stolen card at Tesco Lotus Chalong… Pithawat got into a truck with another suspect, but they sped off when o cers approached them, Col Pinit said. cers pursued them and shot one of the trucks tyres hoping it would stop the men from fleeing, but they abandoned the truck in Soi Palai and drove off in a a da heading north on Thepkrasattri Rd. “The sale of alcohol is permitted during these upcoming holidays, including December 5,” Col Teeraphol said.

“No law states that the sale of alcohol is prohibited on December 5, so people can sell alcohol if they want to, but we do want people to refrain from drinking alcohol to honour and show respect to His Majesty.

“December 5 is our Father’s birthday. We should want to do only the best things for him and be the best people that we can be.”

According to to an announcement by the Prime inister s ce on January 22, 2015, the sale of alcohol is prohibited on five specific religious days: Makha Bucha, V isakha Bucha, Asalaha Bucha Day, Khao Pansa and Wan Org Pansa days.

On the three upcoming public holidays, most government o ces across the island will be closed.

ive operators in Phuket will be required to ensure that every tourist diver has a medical certificate approving them to dive as part of new safety measures to be rolled out after the death of Chinese tourist Zhang Lin north of Phuket last Saturday (Nov 28).

Failure to do so may result in their company registration being struck off, Santi Pawai, Director of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Phuket o ce, said this week.

Other measures include yet another crackdown sweeping through the island’s dive industry to ensure all operators were legal, he warned.

Mr Santi revealed the new measures to be introduced after meeting on Monday (Nov 30) with representatives from Phuket William Diving, the Patong-based dive tour operator that s hang, , was with.

Ms Zhang’s body was found alone at a depth of nearly 12 metres by another dive tour group.

Her dive computer showed that she had been underwater only 26 minutes.

The divers brought Ms Zhang’s body onto their own dive boat and attempted to revive her, as the Peterpan

had reportedly moved away from the dive site.

We can confirm that Phuket William Diving is a fully legally registered dive tour company, Mr Santi said. “But we must do all we can to ensure that no tragedies like the death of Ms Zhang occur again.

“I am waiting for some more information from police and for the autopsy report, and I am collecting more details for my investigation, he said. I hope to conclude this before the end of December.

A friend of mine recently had a motorbike accident and I accompanied her to Vachira Hospital to get treatment.

After the doctor saw her, she was given a list of medicines to collect at the hospital dispensary.

Some of the medicines were free, as although my friend is a Western woman, she legally works here and has Thai social security coverage.

However, she was told that if she did not want to return to see the doctor every day, she could get better medicines, but that she would have to pay “extra” to get those “betterquality medicines”.

Yes, in some circumstances people will have to pay out

of pocket for some hospital costs because social security insurance does not cover all medicines issued to hospital patients.

After examining a patient, a doctor will prescribe certain medicines according to which ones he or she thinks is best for the patient and which the doctor knows we have in stock here at the hospital “Pharmacy”.

Then, when the patient presents the list at our dispensary, the pharmacist on duty will check to make sure that all the medicines prescribed are covered by social security or insurance.

If they are not covered, then the pharmacist will ask the patient if they would prefer to pay for these medicines. If the patient chooses not to, then the prescription is returned to the doctor so

he or she can write a new one including only the medicines that are covered by social security and any insurance the patient may claim against.

If the patient was involved in a road accident, then the pharmacist on duty may ask to see any vehicle insurance (PorRorBor) for the vehicles involved in case that may help costs of any treatment or medicines at the hospital.

We are a public hospital, and our goal is to serve the public. But in many cases we can offer only basic treatments and medicines.

Any specialist treatments or medicines must be paid for by the patient or their insurance, and good medical insurance is always the best policy.

Lip service out to sea

O

ver recent months there have been several incidents in which divers have mysteriously gone missing or died while out on a tour, resurrecting doubt about safety in the local marine industry.

In the latest incident j ust ast wee the od o a h nese tourist was found alone, some 11 metres deep by another dive tour group north of Phuket, the circumstances surrounding her death still vague (see story on page 3).

The tragedy came only 10 days after another Korean tourist had mysteriously died d r ng a tr d e tr p o Phuket’s Koh Hae. In April, 36-year-old American Joshua Devine went missing while he was on route to the Similan Islands. His body was never recovered.

A month before that, in

ar h a o nteer ha diver died on a tour around the Similan Islands, while he and a few other volunteers were attempting to adj ust moorings at a depth of 42 metres.

Then there was the British tourist who was severely inj ured by a boat’s propellers in June while she was diving off the coast of Koh Tao. Don’t forget about the Russian cave divers who died in December last year after an a dent n the h ew an Reservoir in Surat Thani, or the Norwegian tourist who perished, also in December of last year, while diving off the shores of Tao Thong island when she was hit by the propeller of another dive vessel.

Ironically enough, the dive shop organising the trip, pride themselves with their ‘Safety and Q uality First’ motto. h e the e a t a ses n

each respective case are not always clear-cut, and in some cases could be argued as legit accidents, the consistency and frequency of such incidents is all too concerning.

All too often we are left with only more questions and excuses than answers and solutions, and with each tragedy authorities vow to get tougher on safety enforcement.

And yet hapless souls continue to needlessly lose their es nstead o ha e the t me of their lives” as intended.

Indeed, Thailand still boasts some top world-class dive sites, which will continue to lure marine tourists from near and far. However, if the country is serious about eliminating needless tragedies, active and consistent enforcement of protocol and regulations is required on all fronts. Empty lip service j ust won’t cut it.

DEAD AND BURIED Body of kidnapped Aussie found on Pattaya hillside CHONBURI

A

former Australian Hells Angels gang leader kidnapped from his rented Pattaya home this week was found dead in a wooded area of Sattahip district early today (Dec 2).

Wayne Rodney Schneider, 38 , was found in a freshly dug grave amidst roadside brush on Viharn Sian-Khao Cheechan road in tambon Na Jomtien around 12:10am.

Lying naked in the grave about 1.8 metres deep, Schneider’s heavily tattooed body showed serious head inj uries and a broken neck, police sa d here was no dent fi at on found with the corpse.

Police found tyre tracks about 100 metres from the road to the burial site on “Big Buddha Hill”, as it is known locally.

Police tracked the vehicle using GPS and found that it had been parked near the burial site at 7 am on Nov 30 for almost 2 hours, said the Chonburi police chief.

The GPS tracking system showed the rented vehicle was last seen near Khao Phra Tamnak hill in South Pattaya, said Pol Maj Gen Amporn.

He declined to reveal the name of

the person who rented the vehicle.

Teams of police have stepped up a manhunt for those involved in the killing. All the suspects were believed to be in hiding in the country, Pol Maj Gen Amporn. He vowed that all the culprits would be caught quickly.

On Tuesday, the Pattaya Provincial Court issued an arrest warrant for another Australian Antonio

Bagnato, 26, on charges of conspiring to assault and detain Schneider, the suspect’s reported partner in a dne fitness s ness Mr Bagnato, along with four other n dent fied men has een accused of abducting the former Hells Angels biker from his rented Jomtien Park Villas home in Bang Lamung district.

Mr Bagnato is believed to come from New South Wales, where Mr Schneider hailed from, and is a fellow biker with a residence in Pattaya.

Police said Mr Schneider had been living in Pattaya for a month.

He reportedly was invited to share a house by Amad Malkoun, a former leader of Australia’s criminal Comancheros biker gang.

In April, the Melbourne HeraldSun reported that Mr Malkoun had become estranged from his gang amid pressure from law enforcement.

He had since relocated to Dubai.

Mr Schneider’s Hells Angels has since supplanted the Comancheros as Australia’s top outlaw gang, the paper said.

Australia’s ABC News said Thai police said they were working with

Australian law enforcement on the case and had made contact with Mr Schneider’s Thai wife, who also is currently in Dubai.

Pol Col Sukthat Pumpunmuang, superintendent of Pattaya City police, told ABC that Schneider – who has a long criminal history dating back at least 10 years – “ was on a watchlist for Australian police to follow up ... and also follow up his friends in a gang.”

FAA downgrades Thai aviation THE US FEDERAL AVIAtion Administration (FAA) has decided to downgrade Thailand’s aviation sector, setting the stage for possible worldwide bans of Thairegistered airlines.

“A reassessment in July 2015 found that Thailand did not meet international standards,” the US regulation agency said a statement posted on the FAA website on Tuesday (Dec 1).

“Today’s announcement follows ongoing discussions with the government of Thailand which concluded on Oct

28 ,” it added.

The decision means Thailand has dropped to Category 2 from Category 1, increasing odds that Thai carriers will be subj ected to service curtailments or outright bans not only in the US, but also in Europe and Asia.

Thailand had been rated on Category 1 since 19 9 7 .

That status allowed Thaireg stered arr ers to to the US and launch new services.

“With a Category 2 rating, Thailand’s carriers can continue existing service to the United States. They will

not be allowed to establish new service to the United States,” the FAA said.

Reined in by red tape Mongolian herders face battle to survive

MONGOLIA

or thousands of years Mongolia’s Dukha ethnic minority have depended on their reindeer herds to survive the bitter winters, but now their nomadic way of life is threatened by new government restrictions introduced on environmental grounds, they say.

The Dukha spend the winter in snow-covered mountain forests where temperatures plunge as low as -50 degrees Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit).

Just a few dozen such families remain, sleeping in tarpaulin tents beside their tethered animals.

But raising livestock – including reindeer – has been banned in parts of the “taiga”, rugged wooded areas stretching from Mongolia to neighbouring Russia, where a national park was declared in 2011.

The area is the Dukhas’ traditional autumn feeding grounds, where they fatten their animals before the onset of the severest cold, and the measure has put them under what they call intolerable pressure.

“There is no place left for us to live in the taiga,” said Sandagiin

Even by the standards of one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries, life in the taiga is harsh.

There are only a few tracks, and often the only mode of transportation is horse or reindeer.

Staying warm is a constant struggle and attacks from roaming packs of wolves an everyday threat.

Some of their tents are equipped with solar panels and satellite phones in a nod to modernity, but younger Dukha are tempted by the apartments in Mongolia’s expanding towns and cities.

Herder Tsendeegiin Ganbat – no relation – recalled one season when he could not find anything to eat.

“I really wanted to give up several times, that was when the weather got too cold and all my kids got sick,” he said.

His 11-year-old son Bayandalai

spends his weekends at the family camp, riding a reindeer for an hour every Sunday to the nearest track, and then going by car to spend the week at a school in the town nearest to his home.

He also has a daughter who studies in Mongolia’s bustling capital Ulan Bator, and has told her parents she will stay there after graduation – a decision they understand.

Dukha do not eat their reindeer, which they keep mainly for milk,

and many keep guns to shoot elk and other wild mammals as well as for protection from wolves.

But Mongolia heavily restricts hunting, citing concerns about declining animal stocks, and the nomads are forced to buy mutton, goat meat and staples such as rice from nearby farmers in order to stay within the law. he park had been made offlimits to nomads to protect it from illegal gold mining, which causes ecological damage, Tsedendashiin Tuvshinbat of Mongolia’s environment ministry said.

Nomads can graze their reindeer outside the park, he added.

Some younger Dukha – known as saatan in ongolian flout the rules, bringing their animals into forbidden zones to graze on moss and lichen buried under the snow.

Many Dukha are dependent on government handouts – worth about $ 65 (B2,330) each month for adults – and income generated from tourists visiting their camps.

“If there were no allowance, all the reindeer men would have gone to jail,” Sandagiin Ganbat said. “And there will be no more reindeer and reindeer riders.”

Battlelines against bugs ondu an a m fi hts southe n pine beetle

F

or Honduran soldiers fanning out in the pine forest, their chainsaws roaring, the enemy is like no other: numbering in the thousands, invading a sizeable chunk of their country and causing incalculable environmental damage.

Their tenacious adversary? A tree-munching bug called Dentroctomus frontalis, more commonly known in North and Central America as the southern pine beetle.

It has always been present in Honduras, in smaller numbers. But this year has seen a sudden explosion that a number of experts blame on global warming.

As world leaders gather in Paris for a United Nations summit aimed at forging a pact to curb climate change, the Honduran soldiers from the First Artillery Battalion in Zambrano province just north of the capital are locked in a battle they know they are finding hard to win.

The southern pine beetle has already destroyed 400,000 hectares of pine forest – nearly a quarter of the country’s primary forest cover. And at present its appetite is showing no sign of abating.

The devastation in such a biodiverse country, a third of which is covered with trees, is being called an unprecedented “ecological catastrophe” by many experts.

“This plague will leave us with just half the pine trees in Honduras – if we’re lucky,” said a military adviser, Lucky Medina, supervising the soldiers as they cut down trees.

Commanders of the battalion of 350 men admit they feel impotent against the beetle, and have called in reinforcements from the country’s Forest Conservation Institute (ICF) and the military’s Forest Commando unit.

“It’s a shame to see this,” one commando o cer, Colonel Bernardo Avila said.

Angela Sevilla, an ICF expert watching the operation, adds it took “40 to 50 years to have a forest like this.”

“But we need to cut the tree to save the forest,” responded Mr Medina.

He noted that, last year, the beetles destroyed a relatively limited 15,000 hectares.

But a prolonged drought caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon in the Pacific

Ocean this year boosted insect numbers six-fold. From September to November, it is estimated that the area they had spread to tripled.

“The increased insect population is the product of climate change, due to the elevation in temperatures,” Mr Medina asserted.

El Nino wreaks havoc on world weather patterns every two to seven years, causing floods and droughts.

Although there is no global scientific consensus that it is itself a sign of climate change, researchers have noted it is occurring with greater frequency.

The US Department of Agriculture calls the bug “one of the most destructive pests of pines.” It says sudden outbreaks have been recorded in the US every few years for “unknown” reasons.

The southern pine beetle is active across parts of Central America, Mexico and the United States.

In the group watching the soldiers is Sergio Quinonez, an expert sent by the Mexican

government to help Honduras tackle its bug infestation.

He used a knife to cut into one of the trees, then tweezers to lift out some of the beetles, no bigger than a grain of rice, and put them in a plastic container for later study.

Mr Quinonez said that the long drought had “stressed” the trees, thus making their bark more vulnerable to the encroaching insects.

Thousands of the beetle eggs are under the bark of a stricken tree, with each female able to lay 50 eggs at a time, prompting Mr Quinonez to urge the soldiers to burn the bark and harvest the wood to help finance the fight against the southern pine beetle.

Medina pointed out a tall tree about 50 years old that was streaming with resin.

“When a tree is infected by the larvae it secretes the resin as a defense mechanism, to protect itself. But the discharge it receives from the insects is so great that it ends up succumbing,” he said. AFP

BRITISH POLICE stepped in this week after a woman on London’s underground system was handed a card calling her a “fat, ugly human”.

Health worker Kara Florish said in a tweet that the card she was given on the Underground was “hateful” and “cowardly” and “could potentially upset those people who are struggling with their confidence .

She tweeted a picture of the card, which on one side said “fat” and on the other read: “Our organisation hates and resents fat people. We object to the enormous amount of food resources you consume while half the world starves.

“And we do not understand why you fail to grasp that by eating less you will be better off, slimmer, happy and find a partner who is not a perverted chubby-lover, or even find a partner at all,” the message continued.

The company, which specialises in grey imports, has placed renewed focus on its One Stop Service centre, explained TSL PR Executive Wasan Theprungsirikul.

“We have even dropped charges for the first service of any of the vehicles bought from us as part of our revamped drive targeting customer service,” he said.

TSL Auto Sales Director Damrong Nilrangsri noted that the luxury car importer had grown from strength to strength since opening its doors four years ago.

Protecting your rights in investor-state contracts Je rrol d K i p p en Tax & Law Expert Duensing Kippen

A

s the Thai government continues to roll out mega-projects in Phuket and elsewhere throughout the country, the question of how to attract major foreign investment by offering protection has reared its head again.

Our previous column explained the different forms of rights foreign investors can make use of in public-private contracts (“PPCs”) and investment treaties (“ITs”). This week’s installment focuses on what legal options are available in enforcing those rights.

Claims by an investor under a PPC would be subject to whatever dispute resolution mechanism is provided for therein. In the case of the IT this is usually by way of submission of the dispute to the courts of the host State or to international arbitration. Where international arbitration is provided for it will commonly take one of the following three main forms:

Investors’ rights can be protected under joint investor-State agreements for major joint projects, such as the proposed Phuket light rail. Image: OTP 1) “ICSID”; 2) “institutional arbitration”; or 3) “ad hoc arbitration under the UNCITRAL Rules”.

Submission to the courts of the host State is generally not the preferred choice for the investor.

The forum is considered not to be in a “neutral” location and the decision-maker is regarded as not to be “independent” of the allegedly breaching host State.

“ICSID” stands for the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes. The 1965 Washington Convention established ICSID “primarily to create an arbitral forum for the resolution of disputes between investors and

States… ” As of November 1, 01 , 1 0 States had ratified the Washington Convention.

Because it was designed to resolve investor-State disputes, ICSID arbitration is distinctive in that it: 1) virtually eliminates any involvement by another State’s courts in the arbitration proceedings; and 2) requires all contracting States to immediately enforce the final award without any grounds on which it may analyse and conclude to refuse such enforcement–thereby avoiding the “indignity” of any contracting State being subjected to the scrutiny of another State’s courts.

“Institutional arbitration” refers to arbitration under the administration and rules of an arbitration service provider, for example: the International Chamber of Commerce; the International Centre for Dispute Resolution; the Singapore International Arbitration Centre; or the Thai Arbitration Institute.

“Ad hoc arbitration under the UNCITRAL Rules”, refers to arbitration which is not administered by an institution and is therefore “ad hoc” but which is controlled by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Arbitration Rules.

Both institutional and ad hoc UNCITRAL arbitration are designed for commercial disputes between individual parties without regard to sensitivities of disputes involving National “sovereigns”. They depend on the “1958 New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards”.

The New York Convention will only recognize arbitration awards, which are subject to the

procedural law and a certain degree of possible involvement of the courts of the State where the arbitration takes place. Such third-party State court involvement is the reason why ICSID arbitration is the preferred choice for arbitration involving a State.

ICSID arbitration gained acceptance within ITs as they proliferated. However, since States have increasingly come to recognize that their commercial activity does not necessarily implicate their sovereignty, ITs have also become increasingly subject to institutional and ad hoc arbitration.

With regard to enforcement of ITs, it is not uncommon that the investor will be required to first submit their dispute to the host State’s courts for some minimum period of time. However, the ultimate resolution of the dispute is generally vested in one of the forum options discussed above. The investor generally has a choice of which forum, but once made this choice will exclude the other forums. A typical example of such is Article 33(1) of the ACIA: A disputing investor may submit a claim referred to in Article 32 (Claim by an Investor of a Member State) at the choice of the disputing investor: (a) to the courts or administrative tribunals of the disputing Member State, provided that such courts or tribunals have jurisdiction over such claims; or (b) under the ICSID Con-

vention and the ICSID Rules of Procedure for Arbitration Proceedings, provided that both the disputing Member State and the non-disputing Member State are parties to the ICSID Convention; or (c) under the ICSID Additional Facility Rules, provided that either of the disputing Member State or the non-disputing Member State is a party to the ICSID Convention; or (d) under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules; or (e) to the Regional Centre for Arbitration at Kuala Lumpur or any other regional center for arbitration in Asean; or (f) if the disputing parties agree, to any other arbitration institution, provided that resort to any arbitration rules or for a under sub-paragraphs (a) to (f) shall exclude resort to the other.

It should also be noted that an investor may have a claim under either their PPC with the host State or an applicable IT or both. Any such claims would be properly addressed only under the applicable PPC or IT dispute resolution provision.

PIWC goes Mediterranean Venerated Phuket charity raises money for Thai student scholarship

A

mid the myriad of charitable organisations benefiting Phuket, the venerable Phuket International Women’s Club (PIWC) stands out as arguably the longest home-grown volunteer group servicing the com-

munity.

Venerable means valued and respected due to age. After 26 years of unstinting service to the education of Thai children from poor families, PIWC has earned the right to be, well, venerated, by foreigners and Thais alike around the island.

The record speaks for itself: more than 1,200 students have benefited from scholarships in those 26 years including five doctors with another two graduating this year; dentists, a lawyer, a petrochemical engineer and numerous nurse graduates. Young Thais are contributing positively to

society because of the start PIWC gave them.

This year PIWC handed out 165 scholarships valued at more than B2 million.

Raising such money for scholarships doesn’t come easy. Phuket has many other organisations competing for a piece of the same charity pie.

Of Phuket’s estimated 600,000 residents, about 100,000 are foreigners, many of whom are retired with some disposable income.

PIWC’s constitution’s states PIWC objectives are 1: “To unite women from all nations in Phuket and surrounding areas to meet on a regular basis for friendship.” 2: “To make living in Phuket more enjoyable.” And, 3: “To hold fundraising activities for the PIWC educational fund.”

Members of the PIWC therefore have been in constant fundraising mode throughout the 26 years to meet

that last objective, annually.

To measure the challenge facing the 125 current members, the annual cost of a six year medical degree is B60,000; a four-year nursing course costs B25,000 a year and four years at Rajaphat University B20,000 a year. Other courses, ranging between two and four years, cost from B10,000 to B25,000 a year.

A daunting but, as PIWC has proved over more than two decades, not impossible task. Fundraising activities include monthly luncheons, golf tournaments and an annual large-scale fundraising event. For many years PIWC’s annual ball was the social event of the year, but in more recent years the group has replaced it with specialised events such as the Melbourne Cup horserace party since November 2014.

23, 2016 at The Pavilions in Cherng Talay. Each of the 11 tables will be named after a country bordering the Mediterranean Sea (Monaco, France, Italy, Greece, Malta, Spain, Slovenia, Turkey, Cyprus, Morocco and Egypt).

So get out your sewing machine, or trip the light fantastic to a costume shop and turn up on the night with a Bonjour (French), Olá (Spanish), Merhaba (Turkish) Ciao (Italian) or whatever “hello” you fancy to your friends. DJ Garry Holden from Phuket Vibe will spin the discs.

KIS choir calms with Christmas carols

embers of the Kajonkiet International School Phuket (KIS) secondary student choir, accompanied by Key Stage 2’s aspiring choral group (Y3, 4, 5 and 6 students and teachers), on Tuesday morning (December 1) filled the healing halls of Mission Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket, with a number of calming, classic X’mas Carols.

The melodic morning began at the reception hall of Mission Hospital with a small concert by the 80+ students, who then greeted patients in some of the wards. The next stop on the field trip was at Bangkok Hospital Phuket, where smiling patients, parents and staffs gathered around for the show.

Among the classics performed

were, A little town in Bethleham; Ding dong merrily on high; Away in a manger; God rest ye merry gentlemen; We three kings; Deck the halls and We wish you a merry Christmas.

“We’ve been rehearsing these songs for about four weeks now. The kids have been working very hard.

Most of the kids know many of the

songs already,” said KIS Music Department head, Mr Davidson.

“We were joined by our new piano teacher Ms Jida, as well as new guitar teacher Mr Dennis, and the Key Stage teaching helped make this happen,” added Mr Davidson.

The performances were followed by an X’mas show at KIS’s Kathu Campus the following day.

I thought we would finish up the year with a culmination of all the monthly asanas for this year. I have put the asanas into a flowing yoga sequence, a great way to practice all of our asanas for 2015. We can refer back to the online yoga articles on thephuketnews.com, to catch up on the finer details of each asana.

Flow, it is such a common word these days. Good old Wikipedia describes flow as: “Flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterised by complete absorption in what one does.”

How was your flow this year? It is so easy to lose your step and instead of going with your flow, you get caught up on the wave of life and get dragged along.

Sometimes I find that in order to change from just getting dragged along in life to finding your own flow in life, you need an anchor, something that brings you back to your “place” in life. I chose yoga as my anchor.

Yoga grounds me, challenges me and helps me keep my “place” in life. Until you find your own anchor I am happy to share my yoga anchor with you.

So as we approach the end of a year and the beginning of a new one, let’s put our hearts, bodies and minds into the practice of our 2015 yoga flow, working with each asana for a 30-second to one-minute timeframe, be-

ast week I had the pleasure of attending a lunch at Iniala Beach Resort and caught up with a truly fabulous lady who has spent her life perfecting her culinary skills and producing some of the most inspiring and exquisite dishes that I have ever had the chance to experience.

Aisha Ibrahim is the new Chef de Cuisine at the grandiose resort, which, when it comes to gastronomic destinations in Thailand, is on the level with, if not better, than some of the best in Bangkok.

The resort exudes all the trappings of truly opulent wealth, while conjunctively representing some of the most innovative, extraordinary and mesmerising designs Thailand, and quite possibly the entire world, has ever witnessed.

Aisha is the latest to a line of world-class

master chefs, including Iniala’s mainface 3-Star Michelin Chef Eneko Atxa.

Aisha comes from a background of extensive kitchens in an array of dynamic restaurants. Under the leadership and guidance of Chef Eneko, Aisha is so far running Aziamendi with precision and vibrancy. Having worked together for the first time in 2014, Aisha immediately clicked with Chef Eneko’s culinary style and vision.

Her culinary career kicked off at the age of 24 when she became Chef de Cuisine at a Spanish inspired restaurant where she started as a sous chef. It was during this time she met Chef Eneko and began collaborating with him. ally meeting him,” Aisha tells me.

“We met each other, and the event at the time that I was leading was really successful and he was really happy with everything. When we said goodbye, there was a glittering hope I would see him again. About a year later, just out of the blue, he emailed me and said: ‘Hey what are you doing? I have this thing, are you interested?

“I said yes, obviously! And so that’s how I got here.

“I spent June training in Bilbao, Spain, getting an idea of what his concept is. I’m very fortunate that he’s so confident with my style of food, and he’s allowed me to put all of my touches into all the dishes I create.

“I try to localise the ingredients, and the local community have been helping me source these. It’s all about being aware of what’s around you and trying to use that as much as possible.

“A part of the shift with the new menu is about finding what’s here and trying to highlight that [obviously in its richest form!]. You have to understand the different techniques of where you are and how to utilise certain things.”

Aisha’s patience and hard-working ethic has been reflected in times where one may encounter a language barrier and her commitment and ability in training a team is not only proving her to be an inspiring and talented chef, but also an endearing, approachable and warm individual; the key characteristics needed in every kitchen.

“This opening menu is a good introduction to the amount of technique I want to apply to the menu and the technique that I want the team to pick up,” Aisha explains.

Aisha was born in the Philippines, but has spent the majority of her formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States.

Don’t be fooled by Aisha’s journey though, she was in fact a former basketball player for 16 years. At a time when she was out of play, she began to become obsessed with reading old American cook books.

A quarter-of-a-life crisis and some hardcore studying later, she was a graduate from the California Culinary Academy. Aisha then dedicated her time to training in some of the most iconic Bay Area restaurants including Aqua, Foreign Cinema and Betelnut.

With such long hours and many consecutive days in a row, it’s not difficult to recognise the challenges a chef would face on a day-to-day basis. However, it’s a job that only the most passionate can live up to and Aisha’s talent and patience is nothing short of unbelievable.

Aisha inputs an incredible amount of intricacy and finesse into the creation of each dish, resulting in a perfect balance of flavours and textures.

“But, I love it,” Aisha reiterates.

Favourite style of cuisine?

“Hands-down Japanese. They have the best ingredients and they are very traditional when it comes to techniques.

I’ve never had so many meals back-toback that have made me want to cry because of how perfect they’ve been.”

Aisha’s culinary work experience is impressive and a strong reflection as to just how brilliant she is. Her horizons were further broadened in Japan where she trained with Chef Seiji Yamamoto at the 3-Star Michelin Nihonryori RyuGin. She has also revisited Japan to stage a number of 2 and 3-Star Michelin restaurants in Tokyo.

Iniala Beach Resort is designer luxury at its best and there’s no doubt that Aisha will continue to thrive and flourish in such an environment.

If you’re in any doubt of her capabilities, then I strongly recommend you reserve a table at Aziamendi and experience the fine dining yourself, trust me when I say it will be one of the most extravagant yet relaxing days you may encounter and is a culinary experience that is simply unmatched in Thailand.

eading luxury resort, Indigo Pearl at Nai Yang Beach on Phuket’s north, re-launched its renowned Sunday brunch at the start of November, a magical, intimate experience now back better than ever.

This year, the resort decided to star one of the world’s great bubbly beverages to wash down the sumptuous surf and turf delights and guests can now enjoy this every Sunday.

My family and I recently had the pleasure of experiencing said popular brunch and all I can say is, wow!

Upon arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the vast range of foods to choose from; starters such as bruschetta and foie gras, poached seafood, smoked seafood, shellfish, a selection of fresh oysters from around the world, cold cuts and terrine, various cheeses, a Japanese station featuring sushi, sashimi and tempura.

From chocolate dacquoise, to lemon and raspberry, to mascarpone mousse, we really were spoilt for choice.

While we plowed down some of the heavenly delights, we were entertained by the island’s renowned musician, PJae Stanley, and her band. It was the perfect way to sit back and enjoy the atmosphere while we let our bellies digest!

One of the selling points about the brunch is the option to let your kids play in the Tin Box Kids Club for the afternoon. This way, you can still have some quality time with your kid for part of the day, but also enjoy the brunch with your partner with no stress. Not sure who was most sleepy on the way home, us or our daughter.

Overall we had a wonderful day, from the service to the quality fresh food, to the attention to detail, let’s just say I’m glad the brunch is back!

elegation still looms for Phuket FC as they dropped from 15th to 16th place in the YAMAHA League Division One table following a defeat to Ang Thong FC last Sunday (Nov 29) at the Ang Thong Stadium.

Ang Thong, or the ‘ Rice Warriors’ are still vying for a promotion slot to the Thai Premier League and were sitting mid-table on 48 points. Phuket meanwhile were in 16th with 40.

The Ronins started the game confidently and were the first to have a real good scoring opportunity which came 18 minutes into the game.

A quick counter-attack from midfielder Wasan Samansin saw him put a through-ball into the box, he ran on to collect the ball, but his close-range shot was easily blocked by a solid Warrior’s defender.

ight swimmers from the BISP JSA Swim Academy, based at British International School, Phuket (BISP), have been selected to represent their country at the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Age Group Swimming Championships in Danang, V ietnam from Dec 4-6.

The swimmers are Nicholle Toh and Chantal Liew

of Singapore; Raine Gavino, Jeremy Lim and Courtney Gray of the Philippines; and Eric Tan, Yap Siew Hui and Wong Fu Kang of Malaysia.

The BISP JSA Swim Academy has placed increasing numbers of athletes on respective national teams at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Age Group Swimming Championships over the past three years, and this is a great reflection on the program’s ability to nurture and cater for athletes

from multiple nations, racing multiple events and distances, all under one holistic programmes roof.

Old Town Run, a charity fun run which allow participants to enjoy the sights of Phuket Old Town while running the course.

A press conference to announce details of the run was

held recently by Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana at Central Festival Phuket.

Speaking at the press conference, Mayor Somjai said, “The 3rd Phuket Old Town Run is a charity event organised by Baan Bang Neaw Municipal School. The aim of the run is to bring people together to enjoy a pleasant running experience while enjoying the beautiful scenery of Phuket Old Town.”

Ms Pornyamon, President of Baan Bang Neaw Municipal School Parent’s Association added, “The main aim of holding the Phuket Old Town Run is to raise funds to buy a new songtaew for the tourism education centre.

“The centre is funded by Baan Bang Neaw School together with the Tourism Thailand Authority and somewhere people can go to learn about the local tourism and the history of the community.”

There will be two distances in which people can participate, a 10 kilometre mini-marathon and a 4km fun run. Entry for both events is B300 per person.

BISP footballers go to train with Real Madrid FOOTBALL

n Tuesday (Dec 1), the BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy under 13 boys squad left Phuket for a 10 day training trip in Madrid, Spain.

The team, based at British International School, Phuket (BISP), was personally invited by Globalite Sports Management (GSM), following a summer meeting in Madrid between BISP Head Coach Jonathas Candido and GSM representatives, where Candido introduced the football programme at BISP. Under 13 players Micah and Jonah,

who are also on the trip this year, were the first to attend the programme in 2014.

During their stay in Spain, the U13 team will tour the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, home of Real Madrid; watch a Champions League game between Real Madrid and Malmo; attend a La Liga game between Real Madrid and Getafe; visit the Spanish National Team facilities and museum; visit Real Madrid Soccer City; hold soccer practices with some of the best youth coaches in Spain; and play friendly games against some of the best football academies in the world: Spanish sides Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Alcorcon.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for our players to play against, train with, and test themselves against some of the best clubs in the world,” said Head Coach Candido.

“We plan to make this an annual training camp, allowing some of the best young players in the BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy to experience professional-level training and competition.”

awareness of how important Phuket youths are to the local community, and at bringing youths together to build a passion and inspiration for the game.

The seven-a-side tournament is part of the ongoing ‘Phuket City of Soccer” launched by Phuket FC and Phuket educational institutions to cultivate the love of

sport among youths.

Speaking on behalf of Phuket FC Chairman Pramuke Atchariyachai, Vice president of Phuket Chamber of Commerce Jirawit pitikulsathit, who presided over the opening ceremony said, “I would like to thank Mr Pramuke for valuing sport, especially football, and helping to promote sport activities to students

Phuket Wittayalai School currently lead the way in the league, the final of which will be held on Sunday (Dec 6) with the winning team taking home prize money of B60,000.

eicester City striker Jamie V ardy made history last Saturday (Nov 28) by scoring for the 11th Premier League match r unning in his side’s 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United.

The England for ward struck in the 24th minute, running onto Christian Fuchs’ pass and arrowing a shot past David de Gea to break a record he had previously shared with former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“I’m delighted to have got the goal,” V ardy, the league’s top scorer with 14 goals, told BBC Sport. “It’s a bit disappointing the way we conceded their goal because it could have been three points.

“I’ve just been taking each game as it comes. The record was not in my mind. It would have affected my performance and the team’s, and that’s the last thing I wanted to do.”

V an Nistelrooy, whose record had stood since 2003, was quick to congratulate V ardy, writing on Twitter: “Well done @vardy7! You’re number one now and you deserved it. # 11inarow.”

The record caps a remarkable rise for 28-yearold V ardy, who was playing non-league football in 2012 and had been playing in the seventh tier of English football as recently as 2010.

“Jamie made the record, it is fantastic for us,” said Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri.

“An incredible achievement. Five years ago he played in non-leag ue. It is difficult to grow up so quickly and this fantastic man is not only our goalscorer, but he presses, he works hard, he is important.”

Since then, the milestones have zipped past: 16 goals in Leicester’s Championship promotion campaign, five in his first season as a Premier League player (including one in a di y - win over Manchester United) and a first ngland cap last June.

August brought another forgettable episode when he was fined by Leicester after being caught on camera racially goading an Asian man at a casino, but after meeting the man to apologise, he quickly put the matter behind him.

V ardy follows players like Stuart Pearce, Chris Waddle and Ian Wright in

rising from non-league to play for England and with each goal, he demonstrates that there is more than one route to the top.

“That non-league grounding has stood him in good stead,” adds Walsh, captain of Leicester s 1 League Cup-winning team.

“In his work-rate, closing people down, making it hard work for defenders, it’s nonstop effort.

The player himself would not have done things any other way.

“I might have gone all the way through an academy and then this never happened,” V ardy told the D a il y T e l e g r a p h earlier this year.

“That’s the joy of football.

I’ve come my own way and it’s worked out the best for me.”

Private family funeral held for rugby legend RUGBY

fter sharing their grief with an entire nation for almost two weeks, All Black Jonah Lomu’s family said their last goodbyes at a private funeral for the rugby legend in Auckland on Tuesday (Dec 1).

The Mormon ceremony was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ in Mangere, the gritty south Auckland suburb where Lomu grew up.

His wife Nadene, flanked by sons Brayley, 6, and Dhy reille, 5, add ressed mourners from an altar surrounded by pale roses.

The boys wore black shir ts with the winger’s number 11, the position their father revolutionised on his way to becoming the world’s first global rugby superstar.

The low-key event was in contrast to the scenes of public grief less than 24 hours earlier, when thousands of fans attended a memorial at Eden Park, the spiritual home of New Zealand rugby.

There was also a memorial

for the Pacific community to remember Lomu, who had Tongan roots, last Saturday, but Tuesday’s funeral was a chance for extended family to say goodbye.

“It’s bringing to the end a great celebration, the final stage of the journey for Jonah and his family,” said former All Blacks coach John Hart, who has been acting as a spokesman for Lomu’s relatives since his shock death on November 18.

Since Lomu died tributes have been pouring in from across the rugby world, with many current players recalling how he inspired them to take up the game.

Such was his fame that condolences also came from beyond the sport, including the like of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, British footballer David Beckham, Hollywood star Morgan Freeman and singer Elton John.

Team-mates and rivals alike paid tribute to Lomu as the rugby world united in grief at the legendary All Black winger’s shock death aged just 40.

Players who lined up against him recalled how his

fearsome style transformed rugby union, while younger generations revealed how his exploits inspired them to take up the game.

“I am so, so devastated to hear of the passing away of @JONAHTALILOMU,” England’s 2003 World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson tweeted.

Jonathan Davies of Wales, a one-time opponent who became firm friends with Lomu and met him for dinner just last month, said he was struggling to believe the news.

“RIP Jonah you were a true legend and a gentleman. You changed the game of rugby and will be sorely missed,” Evans said.

France’s Thierry Dusautoir commented: “You inspired a generation of rugby players around the world”, a common theme among the tributes.

English r ugby player Danny Cipriani said Lomu was one of the reasons he first picked up a rugby ball, while for current All Black Sonny Bill Williams the inspiration was deeply personal.

Williams said the Tonganborn was fiercely proud of his Pacific islander roots, which

showed him a youngster of Samoan descent could also excel on rugby’s world stage.

“The thing that stood out for me and a lot of the other young kids was how proud he was of his islander heritage,” he told Fairfax New Zealand.

“That gave many of us a sense of pride.”

Former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga said “singlehandedly put rugby on the map” in the professional era, a sentiment echoed by former team-mate Jeff Wilson.

“Initially it was hard to understand exactly how big he’d got globally,” Wilson told Prime News.

“He took this game to a new level and people around the world knew who Jonah was and what rugby players could do.”

Star fly-half Dan Carter articulated the rugby world’s shock that had finally succumbed to the kidney disease that curtailed the player’s playing career. “I still can’t believe the sad news. Love and thoughts go out to Jonah’s family,” Carter tweeted.

Wallaby great Tim Horan said his death left “a big hole

in rugby” and Umaga said the charismatic giant was a unique rugby phenomenon.

“There’s never been another Jonah ,” he told reporters.

“Everyone’s tried to manufacture one by putting forwards into the backs, or someone on the wing who had the same size.

“But there’s no one like him, and to be honest, there probably never will be.”

Here are five facts about the legendary winger: – At his peak, the 1.96m winger weighed 120kg and could cover 100 metres in 10.80 seconds. That is heavier than Muhammad Ali (107kg fighting weight), taller than Lou “The Hulk” Ferrigno (1.94m) and faster than the career personal best of women’s two-time Olympic 100m gold medallist Gail Dever (10.82s).

– Even at his best, medics estimated his kidney condition meant he was only operating at 80 per cent. “Had he been 100 per cent fit, I wonder what he could’ve done, that’s scary,” retiring All Black skipper Richie McCaw said this month.
