Songkran precautions for Phuket announced SALES OF ALCOHOL WILL be banned during the Songkran holiday on April 12 and 13 in the main “water fight” areas of Phuket. These will include Bangla Rd and the beach road in Patong, Surin Beach, Saphan Hin, Sirinart Park at Nai Yang Beach, Kata and Karon Beaches and Kamala Park. At a meeting on Wednesday (April 3), it was explained that the main aim of the no-drink zones is to prevent road accidents. Last year, during the holiday in Phuket, there were 44 accidents, with three dead and 43 injured. Governor Maitree Intusut, chairing the meeting, said this year’s aim should be zero road deaths. Unlike in Bangkok, throwing water from the back of trucks will not be banned in Phuket, but pick-up trucks full
of celebrants will be told to go slow by police with megaphones. Other points from the meeting: All tour companies and bus companies must check their vehicles before letting them out on the roads during the festival. The Marine Office in Phu ket will provide officers on boats to keep an eye on the shoreline. Other officers, on land at ports and quays, will check all ferries and passenger boats to ensure they are not being overloaded. Cases of sexual harassment will be taken seriously, with offenders being arrested. Police checkpoints will be set up at the following locations to control traffic with the aim of detecting and weeding out drunk drivers: At Phuket International
Airport; In front of the Isuzu showroom in Koh Kaew; Just south of the Heroines Monument; In front of Pa Khlok Municipality; Sirirat Rd, Patong; At the Kalim junction; In front of Eak Andaburi Villages, Chao Fa West Rd; In front of the Bangjak petrol station, Wiset Rd; At the Tha Chat Chai checkpoint; In front of Cheng Talay Municipality; In front of Tesco-Lotus Cherng Talay; At the See Ko checkpoint in Kathu; At the Ket Ho intersection in Thung Tong; Near Big C, Kamala; In front of Wichit Municipality; and At the Ramada Hotel Curve, Karon.

New blackspot claims victims Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter4@classactmedia.co.th
ighways officials and police have appealed to Phuket’s take-noprisoners drivers to be more considerate at Phuket’s latest traffic blackspot, on the bypass road, where there were two accidents this week. Two young Russian students were badly injured on Saturday (March 30) when their superbike was in collision with a car. One was still unconscious on Tuesday, having undergone brain surgery. On Monday (April 1) a Thai motorbike rider suffered damage to his shoulder in a collision with a pick-up truck. Both accidents occurred at the intersection of the bypass road and Klong Bang Yai Rd. The central reservation at the intersection was opened up recently to allow traffic travelling south along the bypass road to turn across traffic and into Klong Bang Yai Rd, thereby avoiding the traffic jams at the Central Festival
H
intersection. The driver of the car in the first accident, Wannakit Maneerat, was not available for comment, but the driver of the pick-up involved in the second smash, Boonsong Laling, said, “I was almost into Bang Yai Rd when the motorbike smashed to me. It was shocking. It’s hard [getting across the traffic at this turning] but I had no choice.” Sataporn Sornsana, Chief of the Phuket Highways Office admitted on Monday, “It’s very dangerous. “The turnoff [into Bang Yai Rd] was opened up by Italian-Thai Co to ease the traffic at the Central Festival intersection [where Italian-Thai is building an underpass]. “I will be talking with Italian-Thai about opening more U-turns. “In the meantime, all drivers should be more considerate when approaching the intersection.” The superintendent of Vichit Police Station, Pol Col Chawalit Phetsipear, told The Phuket News, “Our officers are usually at the intersection in
the morning and evening rush hour to direct traffic. “I will coordinate with the Highways Department to work out something, such as putting up signs to make drivers more aware of the dangers of this intersection.” A flashing light has now been erected at the intersection to warn drivers about the dangers. The two young Russians, both students at the British International School (BIS) were on a big bike travelling north from Central Festival when they were in collision with a car turning into Klong Bang Yai Rd. Sevastan Lukashov, 16, who was driving the bike, was in serious condition Tuesday after brain surgery, and was still unconscious in the hospital’s intensive care unit. His passenger, Vladislav Adrashko, 15, was reported to be recovering well from leg and arm injuries, and was expected to be moved out of the ICU on Tuesday. Opinion: page 8

Going from the airport to Patong by hydrofoil might soon be an option for the island’s many tourists.
Speedboat plan to ease ride to Phuket airport WITH TR AFFIC GETting worse and worse on Phuket’s roads, authorities are seeking new ways to get people from Phuket International Airport to their destinations on the island. One possibility is by sea, which is why a meeting was held on March 27 to discuss a plan to build a quay or pier next to the airport from which marine transport could take passengers, initially to Patong. Phuripat Theerakulpisut, Director of Marine, Phuket Branch, explained, “We are waiting for approval and budget. We have drawn up a plan. We estimate the cost of building it will be around B180 million. “We believe Patong will be the most popular destination, so we have decided to concentrate on that initially. “If it works then we will expand to other parts of Phuket and then to other provinces such as Phang-Nga and Krabi. “The timetable of the boat service will be certain and accurate, and water traffic is not congested like road traffic. “We are ready to do this. If the project is approved, it will take a year to complete. Initially, we’ll use speedboats. From the airport to Patong
is 13 nautical miles, or about 25 kilometres, so it will take only 25 minutes to get there.” With the current state of Phuket’s traffic, it takes an hour or more to travel by road between the two points. Santisuk Tharaporn is GM of Phuket Adventures Group, which operates many speedboat tours, and also owns Dolphin Seaways, operator of two hydrofoils. She had not heard about the plan but told The Phuket News, “It’s a good idea.” However, she said, hydrofoils rather than speedboats would be more appropriate because they are safer and faster. The hydrofoils used by Dolphin can seat up to 128 people and have space for their luggage, while speedboats have much smaller passenger capacity and little space for luggage, she said. In rough weather, she added, speedboats are uncomfortable and can be dangerous, while hydrofoils “fly” above the waves, giving a smooth, safe ride. She estimated that the trip would take 40 minutes by speedboat and 20 by hydrofoil. The problem, however, is that apart from the small pier at the south end of Patong there are no places to bring larger boats into west coast destinations.
T
he seemingly neverending story of Sydictive Element Co and its much criticised New Year party on Patong Beach has taken another turn with the launching of more defamation suits. The suits include one against one of Thai TV’s best-known talk show hosts, Wuthitorn “Woody” Milinthajinda. Salaes Kumuda, a representative of the legal team employed Sydictive Element CEO Jirat “Champ” Petnunthawong, told The Phuket News last Friday (March 29) that Mr Jirat has decided to sue Anandadvip “Chai” Jayangkura, the owner of Anandadvip International Co, along with Mr Wuthitorn and Chalermpon “Jack” Thikamponteerawong over things that were said in an episode of the talk show Woody Gert Ma Kui (Woody, Born to Talk) last month. M r Ji r at has al rea dy launched defamation suits for “at least B100 million” against Mr Anandadvip and others who held a press conference on March 6 at the Royal Thai Police Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok. “There are two separate cases, both of them cases of defamation,” Mr Salaes told The Phuket News. One involves the press conference in March and the other is the talk show.” “We have launched suits against all the people involved in the two cases apart from the Russian customer [who complained during the press conference about the VIP seats at the show]. We are searching for his exact name and address, then we will sue him, too, for defamation.”
Woody: Sue the other people, not me. Mr Anandadvip, after the first defamation suit was fired at him, said he was
not surprised. He told The Phuket News, “Reality is always reality. I knew before
I started that he would sue me. I’m not worried because I have enough evidence and witnesses to prove that what I said was true.” It is not yet known when, or even if, the defamation suits will go to court. Defamation suits are routinely used in Thailand, particularly in politics, as a way to gag critics and opponents. Mr Wuthitor n, whose show airs on Channel 9, was named Television Host of the Year on March 26 at the Nine Entertain Awards. Of the lawsuit, he told the Bangkok Post, “Taking legal action is a huge headache and could take five or six years. I would rather Champ pursue the matter with all the other people he says he wants to sue. “Jack and I are just TV hosts who do not wish anyone any harm. We are merely presenting stories in the news for viewers’ entertainment.” He added, “I have a new variety show and I have to travel the world. I don’t have time to attend court, so if you [Jirat] sue me I won’t turn up.”

Aussies urged ‘not Security driver denies to be aggressive’ B500k ATM cash theft
THE BEST SAFETY DEVICE on a visit to Phuket is common sense, Australia’s honorary consul to Phuket, Larry Cunningham has suggested. Quoted in a report published on Monday (April 1) on the website of 7News, a TV station in Perth, Western Australia, Mr Cunningham said that while the new “safety zones” set up by police in tourist areas are welcome, Australians too often bring trouble onto themselves. He conceded that in many cases of violence against Australians, aggressive behaviour by the Australians themselves was at least partly to blame. “There is assault, but the behaviour of some of the Aussies on holiday here, they stir it up themselves,” said Mr Cunningham. “There [are] only so many yobbos you can see walking up
the street, with a beer in each hand and no shirt, bumping into the locals, before something does happen.” The safety zones measure is a response to a spate of deaths and foreign press reports on safety problems for tourists; around 50 Australians a year die in Phuket, half from natural causes but “the rest from misadventure, including motorbike accidents and drug overdoses”, the 7News report said. Mr Cun ningham was quoted as saying, “Theft isn’t that big a deal; the problem we have more of is drink spiking.” The report ended with advice from an anonymous tourist on how to avoid trouble in Phuket: “Don’t get too drunk and make sure you always know your way home and have somebody with you. Never be on your own.” Bangkok Post

The new banknote – which has colours similar to the old notes – has a portrait of King Ramkhamhaeng of Sokhothai
on the reverse “as a tribute to the great Siamese monarch”. King Ramkhamhaeng is credited with devising the original Thai alphabet. The B20 note is one of the most common in circulation; Ms Thong-urai said that out of four billion banknotes in circulation, 1.4 billion are B20 notes. MCOT Online

E Europeans ‘worth B36bn to Phuket’ EASTER N EU ROPEA N tourists, dominated by Russians, poured B36 billion into Phuket’s economy in 2012, according to the results of research by local consultancy C9 Hotelworks, just published. The research, published as The Emerging Eastern European Market, shows that 1.6 million Eastern European travelers came to Thailand last year, led by Russia with an 82 per cent share. Of these, 650,000 came to Phuket. “Russia’s outbound market to South East Asia shot up past 1.8 million in 2012,” the C9 research report noted. “Over 71 per cent of travelers visited Thailand, followed by Vietnam with 9 per cent and 5 per cent for both Indonesia and Cambodia. Surprisingly Singapore attracted only 4 per cent of the total.” Stimulating the sustained demand was the introduction of visas on arrival for Russians and Eastern Europeans, coupled with the the sustained “economic explosion” in that region. C9’s Managing Director Bill Barnett said: “Phuket has seen this business build up over the past four years with a 42 per cent compound annual
growth rate. “This rapid acceleration has turned the tables on the once dominant Western European market. The shift is now on display day in and day out on [Phuket] where mounting numbers of charter flights and tour buses are a constant reminder of a changing world.” Leading the transformation has been Phuket’s rising airlift punctuated by its key strategic door-to-door travel time. According to the report, between 2008 and 2012 Russians and other Eastern Europeans visiting the island grew at a compounded annual rate of 77 per cent – with charter flights catering to 56 per cent of total passengers last year. “There is little doubt that the new Phuket tourism economy is now highly leveraged by the mounting influence of Eastern European visitors. The rapidly changing tourism persona comes at a time when traditional markets continue to retract,” added Mr Barnett. “This has triggered stress fractures in local infrastructure support and has created an ongoing controversy over the blending cultures of the new East and the old West,” he noted.

Immigration warning to hotel, villa owners Nattha Thepbamrung reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

he Immigration Police have urged all hotels, resorts, and other accommodation providers, including owners of villas for rent, must begin reporting details of foreigners staying with them by the end of April, or face prosecution. The penalty for failing to report is B8,000 per guest per day. Capt Angkhan Yasanop confirmed that this includes owners of private homes when they have foreign friends or relatives staying with them, whether the guests pay for accommodation or not. “It is the law that the owner of a residence or a hotel manager who has foreign guests staying must report to the local Immigration Office within 24 hours. It is also Royal Thai Police policy to enforce this,” Capt Angkhan said. “We are trying to publicise this before we begin doing random checks. “This campaign will help in locating foreigners in Phuket. Italians grateful after lost-in-jungle rescue AN ITALIAN COUPLE WHO spent nearly three hours lost on Khao Phra Taew on March 27 went to the Phuket Tourist Police Station the following day to thank officers who found them and guided them out of the woods. Mirko Bolognini, 42, and Valentina Parisani, 33, rode a motorbike from Patong to Bang Pae waterfall about 5:30 pm. They planned to walk from the waterfall over the top of Khao Phra Taew and down to the Ton Sai waterfall, on the other side of the forest reserve. But about 7:15 pm, with the daylight long gone and after trekking about a kilometre into the forest, the couple realised they had no idea where they were. Mr Bolognini phoned a friend on the staff of the hotel where he and Ms Parisani were staying, and asked for his help. The friend called the Tourist Police. Pol Maj Urumporn Koondejsumrit explained that he contacted a Tourist Police mobile patrol officer who in turn contacted the Forestry Department, who sent staff to look for the couple. Aussies come to Phuket for ‘designer babies’ MORE AND MORE VISITORS TO PHUKET are here for a controversial medical treatment: choosing whether their next baby will be a boy or a girl. A clinic at Phuket International Hospital is one of the few places where so-called “family balancing” is available – using an in-vitro fertilisation procedure known as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Baby sex-selection is banned in Australia for ethical reasons, but more than 100
Australian couples travelled to Thailand for the procedure last year – that’s up by a third from the year before. Both Phuket International Hospital and Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok openly offer PGD services on their websites. A report on Tuesday (April 2) in Australian media quoted the representative of a medical tourism company as saying the sex-selection procedure in Thailand is a growth niche industry.
“It’s increasing by about 30 per cent annually,” said Cassandra Italia, from medical tourism company Global Health Travel. “In 2011, we sent 72 Australian couples over and in 2012, we sent 106 couples.” The treatment involves testing a woman’s embryo for chromosomes, which determine the gender of the child. Opposition to choosing a baby’s sex before birth often centres around criticism of it as a system for producing “designer babies.”
Ms Italia said her clients are almost all Australians who have had children of one gender, and wish to “balance the family.” “Our clients are generally a family where there is one predominant sex,” she said. “In one case, the mother had a boy from a previous relationship and then she had five girls with her second partner. “They really wanted to have a boy and tried this treatment twice and ended up having a boy.” Bangkok Post

round 250 police officers took part in riot control practice on Monday and Tuesday (April 1 and 2) on the parade ground behind the Phuket City Police Station, as part of a national drive to sharpen up crowd control abilities. Grinning officers playing the part of the mob taunted the helmeted police advancing behind a wall of shields, hurling plastic water bottles at them and letting off firecrackers. The riot control officers blocked them and then retaliated with a water cannon (which was rather appreciated by the “rioters” on the hot parade ground). Police in patrol trucks also practiced dealing with a “mob” on motorcycles, driving in a wall to block their way. Maj Gen Choti Chavalviwat, Commander of Provincial Police, told The Phuket News that the practice was not with any particular Phuket problem in mind, but was on the orders of the Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, Gen Adul Saengsingkaew. “We are practicing techniques for controlling mobs in order to be prepared for any situation that may arise,” he explained.
Ready for anything: Riot control officer with helmet and shield. Photo: Naraporn Tuarob “It is essential that we practice so that our officers work effectively together. Anything may happen in the future, so we have to be always ready to deal with it. “We follow international standards of riot control. Police must know how to deal with a mob, such as setting up lines of officers with armor to control the mob.
“At our first practice, officers spent about one and a half hours getting ready. That’s too long. I believe that if we practice often, we will get faster. Our aim is just 25 minutes. “We will have more practice sessions two weeks from now.” Asked whether this week’s practice was in preparation
for possible riots by taxi and tuk-tuk drivers against the proposed bus service from Phuket International Airport to Kata via Patong, Gen Choti said, “It is everyone’s right to protest, but if you hurt people, destroy property or break the law, then the Riot Control Company will be brought into action. It all depends on the situation.”

Wut t ichai said that he had bought the 1.98 grammes of ya ice found in his possession from Sumonchai. Sumonchai admitted he normally sold the drug to local people and tourists in the Karon area and that he had bought the ya ice from a “senior friend” in Tambon Rassada. The friend, he revealed, is connected to a drug network run from a prison, though he did not reveal which prison. The police investigation continues.

Tax cuts are not yet in force: Revenue Office BAD NEWS FOR TAX PAYers – despite the ballyhoo over the Finance Ministry’s plan to cut personal income tax rates, supposedly starting at the beginning of this year, the Phuket Revenue Office (RO) has stressed that the cuts will not come into effect for a while yet. First, the cuts must have Cabinet approval, which has not yet happened (though it seems almost certain that it will) and then a Royal Decree. Asked how long this process would take, an official from the Phuket RO said she did not know. Until this happens, personal
income tax will continue to be assessed at the rates in force last year. The RO official also reminded foreigners that if they spend more than 180 days in a tax year in Thailand, they are liable to pay personal income tax, not only on earnings in Thailand but also on earnings abroad, unless those earnings are made in one of the 56 countries that have tax treaties with Thailand (for a list see www. rd.go.th/publish/766.0.html). People from a tax treaty country must submit a certificate from that country to the RO, confirming that they have paid tax.
Navy commissions slipway for repairs THE ROYAL THAI NAVY Third Fleet has commissioned a new slipway at its Tab Lamu base in Phang Nga, which will allow it to haul small warships displacing up to 1,500 tons out of the water for inspection and repairs. The slipway, which took a year to build, was tested last week when the 800-ton motor patrol boat PGM 993
was hauled out of the water. It is the first naval slipway to be built on the Andaman Sea cost. Before it was completed, warships that required repairs had to be sailed around Singapore and north to the Sattahip Navy Base in the Gulf of Thailand, or – if that was not possible – would have to be dry-docked at a privatelyowned boatyard in Phuket.

hose who have any doubt about the quality of musical and acting talent on the island should have gone to the British International School’s production of the musical, The Lion King, this week. On Monday’s opening night, in front of an audience of 350 people, the 65 or so students involved excelled on stage. They had spent four months rehearsing and it showed. In total, almost 100 students, parents and staff were involved in the production, directed by BIS Head of Arts Neill Thacker and Moira Lowe. Among the many standout performances of the night was Matthew McGoldrick, a year 10 student, who stole the show with his portrayal of the evil lion, Scar. He was utterly convincing, and everything from his voice projection and enunciation to his acting was superb. Year 13 student Shannon Smith, the oldest performer
From left, Siska Greene (Nala), Natchonrat Terdkiatkhachorn (Rafiki) and Harry O’Brien (Simba) – some of the main characters in the production. Photo: Lizelle van den Berg (also lead singer for Battle of the Young Bands’ finalists The Bayonets), was excellent as Mufasa, and gave a mature performance accompanied by excellent singing. Special mention also goes to Charlie Greene, year 7, who was the young Simba and played the innocent lion cub very well, despite problems with his microphone. He wasn’t fazed by the technical
difficulty, continuing on like a true professional. In the second act, Charlie’s older sister Siska, year 10, sang an impressive solo as the older lioness Nala, as did Natchonrat Terdkiatkhachorn, who played the wise baboon, Rafiki. The costumes were excellent, in particular the gazelle and zebra outfits, as well as the headdresses. Overall, it was a brilliant
show and the audience loved it – as demonstrated by very loud rounds of applause at the end, sparking an encore song. Mr Thacker and Ms Lowe did a superb job with the students and created a performance that they should be very proud of. Phuket needs more musical productions to showcase singing and acting talent – it is a great night out for the family.

T
he motorbike crash on the weekend involving two Russian students from British International School raised an important point about young people driving on the island’s roads. The two boys were on a superbike travelling north from Central Festival when they were in collision with a car, which was coming in the opposite direction and tur ning across them into Klong Bangyai Rd, the road that runs along the back of Phuket International Hospital. Both students are still in Phuket International Hospital. Bike driver Sevastan Lukashov, aged 16, received head and leg injuries. His passenger, Vladislav Adrashko, 15, suffered leg and arm
injuries. We received many comments on the story online at thephuketnews.com, as well as on our Facebook page (facebook.com/thephuketnews), with many readers asking the reasonable question: What was a 16 year old doing driving such a powerful motorbike in the first place? It is not known if Sevastan had a motorbike licence, or if the boys were wearing helmets. It is also not known who was at fault in the crash. Police are investigating and will no doubt be able to provide more details soon. In Thailand, it is legal to obtain a motorbike licence at age 15. However, the law states that those who are aged bet ween 15 and 18 years old, who have motor-
bike licences, cannot drive motorbikes over 110cc. The superbike the students were riding was around 400cc. This crash has raised important questions about our young people driving cars and motorbikes on the island’s increasingly busy roads. Who did the bike belong to? Did the students rent it, or was it owned by themselves or a family member or friend? How did they get access to this powerful bike? Two young boys, with no doubt a great future ahead of them, have been seriously injured. Greater responsiblit y needs to be taken by our community on this issue. This might prevent similar, terrible crashes happening in the future.

Boats, pubs, marinas and boat shows Graham Doven editor@classactmedia.co.th
I
went to the Phuket boat show last week. It was held in the Royal Phuket Marina and it’s officially called PIMEX, the Phuket International Boat Show. It was on for four days and I was there every day. I like boats, pretty ladies and beverages. The boats are wonderful, the sort of thing you associate with James Bond movies, but I can’t afford them. The pretty ladies are also the sort of thing that you associate with James Bond movies, especially the old Cold War movies. Some of the pretty ladies at the boat show had the same accent as those pretty ladies in the James Bond Cold War movies. I also can’t afford them. The beverages I also can’t really afford, however, that hasn’t stopped me buying them for the last 40 years, so I can look at the boats, look at the pretty girls and buy the beverages. That’s fine, for me, that’s what the Phuket boat show is all about. I see a lot of my old friends at the boat show and
Above: Boats at this year’s Phuket International Boat Show. There are rumours a rival show is being considered. it seems that many of them are connected with boats in some way, but all enjoy a beverage. One of my friends, Andy Dowden, runs the boat show. Andy is probably one of the best known of the boat people in Phuket, if not the best known. He turned up here about 29 years ago while sailing around the world in his boat named Buccabu, dropped anchor and set up shop. His office was at Laem Phrao, and it was the only

I’m with you all the way, monkey man [Re. John Gray – Phuket’s own monkey man] It was enlightening and uplifting to read about someone who is passionate about the environment, and although in the business to make some money, hasn’t allowed the almighty dollar/baht to change his beliefs and sense of being fair to his employees. Mr Gray is out on the waters most days and sees what is happening to what were pristine waters around these shores, and has commented on the plight of the environment and the lack of foresight by most people to the impending disaster in the making. My hat goes off to Mr Gray, and his formula for keeping a happy and satisfied staff should be used in business models elsewhere on the island. Gerry Cummings via email
A short drive [Re. Phuket immigration drive warns of drive on foreign stay reports] This has been a law for quite
some time, although not enforced much. This will be like all of Thailand’s “crackdowns” – a brief flurry of activity and rumours causing mild confusion and/or panic in the expat community that is quickly forgotten when some other bureaucrat comes into power with his/her own ideas of how to make the farang jump through hoops. Nothing to worry about, just enjoy the show. Mark Jochim via Facebook
No need for speed [Re. Two Russian teens hurt in Phuket bike smash] Depends who was driving the Honda Civic, it sounds as if it was the car’s fault. But what parents would allow a 15 and 16 year old to drive such a powerful bike anyway. Lisa via thephuketnews.com The legal age for riding a motorcycle in Thailand is 15, but I would think it unlikely the rider had a valid driving licence. If that’s the case, then any
place on the island where you could board a boat from a floating pontoon instead of jumping over the side while trying not to swamp it. It was sitting around at the boat show that made me think about those times. Phuket also has the Kings’ Cup Regatta, Asia’s biggest and best known lifestyle regatta, which started about 1988. Andy was on the committee and eventually became President. PIMEX has been estab-
lished for a decade now, and like many events, goes through ups and downs, usually inf luenced by outside events. A few hundred years ago it would have been very difficult to have a boat show in Phuket, as according to Colin Mackay’s excellent A History of Phuket and the Surrounding Region, cutthroat pirates and local politicians would have captured and plundered all the boats before they got to Phuket.
HAVE YOUR SAY insurance regarding the motorbike will be null and void – regardless of whose fault it was. agogohome via thephuketnews.com Fifteen and 16 on a sport bike? Crazy. It’s their fault. Or their parents. More than likely going so fast the car could not track them. Harry Heltman via thephuketnews.com The legal age to drive a superbike in Thailand I believe is 17, but the question is did the person who rented that bike check the driving license of the two teens? alessandro carafa via thephuketnews.com [Re. BIS student crash victim ‘still serious’ in Phuket hospital] Fifteen and 16? Call me stupid but WTF were they doing on a high powered bike, and why are the parents not under arrest for allowing it? Ian L. Hannaford via Facebook
I thought the same about the age and bike they were riding. Thought it was daft they already let people hire super bikes with no previous experience of riding one, but this is the most ridiculous case I have heard of. Why so quick to assume the parents knew anything at all? It’s too easy to hire these bikes in Phuket. Leanne Gooding via Facebook
Songkran law might be washout [Re. Phuket News: Truck water fights banned for Songkran] Can I have a dollar for every photo I take of people not paying attention to this new law please? I should be able to retire with my winnings. Dave Williams via thephuketnews.com Well, I hope this is being well publicised in the Thai media, else it’ll be a complete waste of time. agogohome via thephuketnews.com
Local politicians were still trying to plunder the boat industry with a 200 per cent import tax up to a few years ago. Andy Dowden played a major role in the removal of that tax. However, in the modern day it’s been more to do with economic times and political problems. Phuket’s boating industry has gradually been growing and the boat show along with it, but while it is the glamour destination of the future, it’s
still relatively early days, and to keep going and growing it relies very much on the support and co-operation of the local industry and community. But dark tales of skullduggery are whispered in the corners of the seafaring hostelries and tables of knowledge. There are rumours that there are those who may want to run the boat show to suit their own personal interests rather than the good of all and are planning to set up another show in another location. I have nothing against competition in business or free enterprise, but in this case, attempts to dilute a small but growing event could very well set back the whole boating image of Phuket in the eyes of the international industry. Working together to keep growing PIMEX and the Phuket industry will eventually pay off for all. Starting another show in another marina will not be helpful to anybody, not the marinas, the brokers, the visitors or the organisers. There will be no winners, only a lot of facial egg for those who still have faces.

Is boat really best? [Re. Speedboat plan to ease ride to Phuket airport] Has the plan been discussed with the taxi and tuk-tuk club in Patong? After all, they’ll have the final word. agogohome via thephuketnews.com How do you get from the airport to the pier? It’s just more money for taxis and/or tuk-tuks. Would have to take at least 10 minutes to get to the pier, then when in Patong, taxi or tuk-tuk to your hotel, why not just take a taxi, all the way. In rough weather, i.e. monsoon season, a hydrofoil still needs to slow down. Laurie Howells via thephuketnews.com
Maybe it will take 20 minutes for the actual ride, but for getting to and from the piers plus boarding and deboarding, it would be better to just get a taxi straight to your hotel. No fuss. The plus would be an amazing scenic view though for passengers just arriving... unless it’s raining. Wade MD via thephuketnews.com Not as silly as it sounds ... no traffic. I was on a speedboat trip with friends a few weeks ago and we zipped down the west coast and we even joked about the idea of a speedboat taxi service. Jamie Monk via Facebook

Abducted marine shot A
marine private from the unit that killed 16 insurgents in Narathiwat’s Bacho district in February was found shot dead after having been abducted by armed men on April 1. Authorities found the body of Pvt Ma-ila Tohlu, 24, near a mosque in Batu village of tambon Bacho of Bacho district in Narathiwat at 8.30pm on Tuesday (April 2). Security officials said his head and body were riddled with bullet holes but there were no signs he had been tortured. Witnesses saw insurgents kick the body out of a pickup truck.
Pvt Ma-ila had been abducted from his home in Rueso district. The private, who had allegedly been a member of an insurgent group, is believed to have tipped off authorities about the February attack in which about 50 insurgents assaulted a marine outpost. Pvt Ma-ila was abducted by eight men dressed as soldiers, his 22-year-old wife, Dareesa Sorpee, said. They arrived on a pickup truck at their house in tambon Suwaree about 7pm on Monday, she said. Mrs Dareesa told police the men arrived at the house
just after she left to buy food in her Moo 3 village. Her husband was in the house with her 20-year-old brother Yakareeya Sorpee. Two men stood guard in front of the house while the other six went inside. One pointed an assault rif le at the head of her brother and demanded to know who the marine was. They bound Pvt Ma-ila and took him away in their pickup truck. Pvt Ma-ila, who is attached to the Chulabhorn Marine Camp in Narathiwat, was seconded to the 32nd Narathiwat unit based in
Ban Yuelor village in tambon Bareh Tai of Bacho district in February. Insurgents attacked the base on Feb 13, but the marines, who had been tipped off about the attack, repelled the assault, killing 16 of the militants. Pvt Ma-ila had been on leave for six days and was spending his time off at home when he was abducted. The private had allegedly been part of a militant network in the past and knew the movements of those who attacked the marine unit. Bangkok Post

Weather threatens future of Bangkok G E O - I N FOR M AT IC S and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) Executive Director Anond Snidvongs said last week that: “Bangkok residents should prepare for the impact of volatile weather conditions... heavy downpours and consequential flooding, while years of studies showed that subsidence has been constantly occurring at 2cm per year.” He added: “During the next 30 years, authorities need to prepare prevention and alleviation measures, especially as the sea level continues to rise each year and parts of Bangkok are already below the mean sea level.” Deputy Dean of the Political Science Faculty at Thammasat University, Tawida Kamolvej, said the risks are made worse by a lack of basic knowledge about the city’s natural features and how to solve problems that may emerge in the future. “Bangkok’s fast pace and crowded lifestyle puts people at risk of fatal danger during a fire or natural disaster for instance.” TTR Weekly

New China premier Li faces challenge to exert authority C
hina’s new premier Li Keqiang has risen from relatively humble roots to take charge of running the government of the world’s second-largest economy, but could struggle to enforce his will. A career bureaucrat who speaks fluent English, Li, 57, has a more youthful bearing than his stiff party peers, and has voiced support for the kind of economic reforms many experts say China sorely needs for continued growth. Like his predecessor Wen Jiabao, Li’s real power comes from his position as number two in China’s ruling Communist Party, where he is seen as having ties to a more populist faction associated with former President Hu Jintao. But Li’s shortage of allies on the party’s top decisionmaking body, the Politburo Standing Committee, leaves him lacking “political heft”, said Patrick Chovanec, a China analyst and chief strategist at Silvercrest Asset Management in New York. In order to exert influence,
BIG CHALLENGE AHEAD New Chinese Premier Li Keqiang waves as he leaves his first press conference in Beijing in March. Photo: AFP/Ed Jones Li will need to secure the support of new president Xi Jinping, who has more personal allies and ties to retired officials as the “princeling” son of one of China’s most famous generals, he added. Li is expected to be in office for a decade, and will seek to wean the country towards
more balanced development, with domestic consumption by a larger middle class playing a greater role. He showed liberal tendencies in his youth, but has toed the party line for decades, and his reputation was damaged by his handling of an HIV/ AIDS epidemic stemming
from a tainted blood donation programme while party boss in Henan province. Local authorities responded with a clampdown on activists and the media rather than assigning responsibility to the officials involved, and at the national level a stream of health scandals have also happened
on his watch. “One concern with Li is that he has been dogged in the past with... not personal scandals, but policy embarrassments, particularly in Henan,” Chovanec said. Li, the son of a minor party official in eastern China’s poor Anhui province, was sent to the countryside to work as a manual labourer during China’s tumultuous Cultural Revolution. He went on to gain a law degree from Peking University, where classmates say he embraced Western and liberal political theory, translating a book on the law by a British judge. But he has been more orthodox since joining the ranks of officialdom in the mid-80s, working as a bureaucrat while his former classmates protested in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Li rose to become the party’s top official in Henan, and Liaoning province in the northeast, both of which saw economic growth, before he was promoted to become a deputy to Wen.
As one of China’s key decision-makers on the economy, Li has been praised for helping to steer the country through the global financial crisis relatively unscathed. One of his top priorities will be to maintain China’s rapid economic growth, which is currently export-led and under pressure because of weakened demand for manufactured goods in Europe and the United States. Since becoming the Communist Party’s number-two last year, Li’s biggest move has been a government restructuring announced last week, which saw the abolition of China’s powerful and often corrupt railways ministry. But analysts say the scale of the restructuring achieved so far point to Li’s challenges ahead. Some fear parallels between Li and his predecessor Wen, who struggled to force through policies as he battled with factions in the upper reaches of the party, and officialdom in the provinces and ministries. ‘Bonobo heaven’: life at a DR Congo ape sanctuary C
laud i ne A nd re, a 67-year-old Belgian living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has spent the last twenty years dedicated to the protection of the bonobo, an extraordinary species of ape threatened by trafficking and poachers. Walking out of the environment ministry in Kinshasa after lodging a request to rescue an infant ape on display at a local bar, she is visibly worried. “We must go tomorrow,” she frets. “I’ve seen photos – he’s not three years old yet, he’s just a few dozen centimetres in height, his nose is running. He’s going to die.” To make sure the operation goes off without a hitch – and for her own personal safety – she will not be going herself. The tyres on her car have already been slashed twice. But that’s not enough to bother “Madame Claudine” as she is known here. She has lived in the Congo for almost all of her life, having arrived when she was just four. A married mother of five, she set up her sanctuary,
GREAT MATES Claudine Andre, director of the “Lola ya bonobo” park near Kinshasa plays with a bonobo in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Photo: AFP/Issouf Sanog “Lolo ya bonobo” or “bonobo heaven”, in 1993. At her 35 hectare conservation area outside the capital she saves the animals from the clutches of the illegal animal trade. Trafficking in bonobos is a lucrative business. According to Andre an infant bought for US$55 (B1,600) can be resold for as much as US$15,000
(B442,300) on the internet. The young apes she rescues occasionally arrive sick, and they always arrive traumatised. First, they are handed over to a “surrogate mother”, one of the many Congolese women working at the sanctuary who fuss over their charges, cuddling the infant bonobos for hours on end.
This crucial step in their rehabilitation can go on for weeks or even months until they’ve recovered sufficiently from their ordeal to be able to rejoin the rest of the tribe. Eventually, they will be released back to their natural habitat: 275,000 kilometres at the heart of the DRC where they are encircled by the Con-
go river and the rivers Kasai and Samburu. At the moment there are 70 residents at “bonobo heaven” waiting to graduate and rejoin their 15 former playmates who have already been sent into the outside world. Estimated to nu mber 100,000 in 1980, today there are just 10,000 to 20,000 bonobos left. Andre attributes their dwindling numbers to poaching, which has gone hand in hand with human population growth. The DRC is a country of 68 million people almost the size of western Europe and ranked last on the United Nations’ development index. Hunger and civil war has driven some to poaching and the sale of bush meat. According to Andre, for every animal she rescues, 10 will have been killed by the poachers who leave only the babies alive – there’s not enough meat on a baby bonobo to sell. “I feel like I’m holding up a barrage with my own hands and, one day, I’ll have to let go,” she said. Jackson doctor refuses to testify at civil trial MICH A EL JACKSON’S jailed former doctor refused Tuesday to testify at a trial in which the singer’s mother is seeking massive damages from tour promoters she blames for hiring the medic. Commenting as jury selection began for the wrongful death civil trial between Katherine Jackson and AEG Live, Conrad Murray said he is appealing his 2011 involuntary manslaughter conviction and does not want to incriminate himself. “I’ve not been subpoenaed. I’m not interested in giving testimony in the trial,’ he
told CNN. The interview, his first since he was jailed, came hours after prospective jurors filed into a Los Angeles courtroom to begin the process of choosing the 12-strong panel that will decide if AEG ends up paying billions of dollars. Judge Yvette Palazuelos started proceedings by reading out the allegations by Katherine Jackson and the late star’s children against AEG Live, promoters of the self-styled King of Pop’s doomed “This is It” tour. Opening statements will only begin once a jury is chosen – likely to take more than
a week. After answering an initial questionnaire, prospective jurors were asked to return to court on Wednesday (April 10) for further questioning. Jackson died at his Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009, from an overdose of propofol, a powerful sedative administered by Murray to help the Thriller legend deal with chronic insomnia. His 82-year-old mother accuses AEG Live of negligently hiring Murray to look after 50-year-old Jackson as he rehearsed in Los Angeles for the London shows scheduled for that summer. Katherine Jackson argues that AEG Live pushed her son too hard to prepare for 50 or more performances, in what was seen as an attempt to revive his lucrative career. While Murray says he will not testify, Katherine Jackson herself, as well as the late pop star’s two elder children, are expected to give evidence in the trial, which could last more than two months. ‘No power outages’ promise as gas field shutdown approaches T H E ELECT R ICI T Y Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has given assurances that the country will have enough electricity from today (April 5) to April 14, when Myanmar’s Yadana gas field is closed for maintenance – despite high temperatures pushing power demand in Thailand to record highs. Yadana supplies a quarter of the gas for Thailand’s gas-fueled power stations, which generate 70 per cent of Thailand’s electricity. EGAT Governor Sutat Patmasiriwat said the country’s electricity use reached its highest level ever on March 28 at 26,430 megawatts (MW), higher than expected, resulting in EGAT’s revision of the country’s forecast for electricity use for April 5-14. On April 5, with average temperatures in the shade expected to reach 40ºC, additional demand is expected to push use to 26,600MW. Mr Sutat said the unusually hot weather is resulting in the peak period for electricity demand coming earlier than the normal peak around the end of April and beginning of May. However, Mr Sutat said the higher load would not result in brownouts or blackouts because Thailand’s manufacturing sector has agreed to use less power and to generate around 200MW more than usual. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has said its members will reduce electricity consumption by around 1,000MW, while the public are also expected to reduce electricity use, giving the country a buffer of at least 1,600MW for emergency use. Big firms that have already agreeing to curb their power use include Toyota (300MW), SCG (100MW), and IRCP (40MW). The government yesterday (April 4) staged an awareness campaign on energy saving, to encourage the public to reduce energy use from 1-3 pm by turning off or unplugging appliances that are not being used. The peak hour of power usage usually occurs at around 2pm, he said. MCOT Online

LAGGING BEHIND Thailand ‘trailing neighbours’ as a destination – WEF
W
hen it comes to favourite destinations for tourists, Thailand is behind Singapore and Malaysia, according to a report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report for 2013 placed Singapore top of the countries in Asia and Malaysia one place above the kingdom. It praised the friendly attitude of Thais towards foreign tourists and the solid performance of the private sector in Thailand to bolster tourism. But the industry was hampered by natural disasters, political unrest, the protection of property rights and red tape to start a business, noted the report, which is conducted every two years. Thailand predicts 24.5 million tourists this year, up

from 22.3 million in 2012. The Tourism Department hopes 30 million visitors will come to the country in 2015.
Thailand ranked 43rd in the world rankings, dropping two notches from the last survey in 2011. It also was the
ninth most popular country in the Asia-Pacific region, which was also led by Singapore. “Singapore benefits from excellent transport infrastructure”, including ground and airport facilities, the report said. Malaysia came second in Southeast Asia and sixth in East Asia, due to its low fuel prices, ticket taxes and airport charges, along with its competitive hotel rates. Malaysia has ridden on its successful “Truly Asia” tourism campaign to lure tourists to the country. Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia were behind Thailand respectively. Laos and Myanmar were not included in the report. Natural resources and several World Heritage sites were among attractions enticing tourists to Indonesia, it said.
The repor t called the Philippines “the most improved country” among the Asia-Pacific nations, thanks to its aggressive spending on marketing and branding campaigns. Improving protection of property rights, more openness toward foreign investment and fewer visa requirements for foreign visitors made the Philippines an up-and-coming country, although infrastructure remained a problem, the report added. In the global list, Switzerland was in command as the world’s best destination, due to its top hotel and other tourism facilities. “Switzerland’s infrastructure, especially ground transport, is among the best in the world,” it said. Haiti was placed last of the 140 countries surveyed in the report. Bangkok Post

ot to be confused with the 1989 children’s comedy, this storyline is darker and far more dramatic. The prologue: Michael, a young, up-and-coming British project manager in the oil sector, arrives in Dubai with his wife Antonia, about to embark on the next chapter of their life together as expatriates. Seduced by the salary, the climate, the beautiful beachfront apartment (paid for by the company), and the promise of an early retirement, their future appears on course. For many years Michael and Antonia enjoy life as if they are on holiday, attending as many weekend brunches and social events as possible. They dress to impress in the season’s latest designer wear and are regulars at many of Dubai’s top restaurants. Soon two become four as their daughters are born, with the couple deciding to remain in Dubai until after the children’s education is completed. But lurking in the shadows, a dark truth prepares to deprive of them of the future they’ve taken for granted. Dramatic pause for some numbers: According to the UAE’s annual National Bonds GCC Savings Index, 65 per cent of residents (locals and expats) do not save any money on a regular basis; Of those who do save, 45 per cent of all people surveyed save 10 per cent or less of their income; The reasons why those who save do so are mostly

The outgoings have increased significantly year on year but they want to continue to keep up appearances within social circles, so the majority of incoming earnings are fast spent. Now in their late 40s, they realise the promise of an early retirement at 55 hes become a pipe dream, and Michael and Antonia are left considering how they will pay for things such as their daughters’ weddings, and a potential move back to the UK. Their concern can now be seen etched into their foreheads. They wonder where they went wrong, what they failed to do and why they didn’t take action sooner. 4. of free spending, one which can leave little or no disposable income by the end of each month, and it would appear as though this is not the picture of those in the minority, but in fact the majority way of life. Critical reaction: The dark subject matter of this script may be frightening for some. It tackles head-on our fears of financial insecurity and demonstrates that a failure to plan for the future can result in a bleak outlook. What was once a rose-tinted ideal becomes a head-scratching conundrum. Some people may already have a company pension in place while others, especially expatriates, may have frozen pensions from when they relocated (more on that subject in future articles). But there will also be those people who do not have access to company pensions and will be reliant solely upon their own ability to build a nest egg for the future. Despite this, a message of hope remains. Planning for retirement is entirely possible; there are many options which

AIRPORTS OF THAILAND says it will open Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport to all international airlines, putting it on an equal footing with Suvarnabhumi Airport. The capital’s original airport was closed five years ago when the new, much larger and more modern Suvarnabhumi Airport opened. Last year, however, with Suvarabhumi approaching capacity, Don Muang – which was inundated in the 2010 floods – was rehabilitated and brought out of mothballs as a base for domestic airlines. This was later expanded to include regional airlines, low cost carriers such as AirAsia and Nok Air, and international charter flights. Now, however, it will become, once again, a full-service international airport – as long as the Cabinet approves. According to the local newspapers, AoT confirmed the plan late last week, after the shift in policy was approved by its board of directors. Because 70 per cent of the company’s shares are still owned by the government, the
plan will have to be approved by the Cabinet. If the plan gets the green light, Don Muang will be open to all airlines, regardless of their business model. AoT officials hinted that the OneWorld alliance, led by Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways, had expressed interest in using Don Muang airport. According to reports, OneWorld also suggested that the airport should be expanded to allow for giant Airbus A380 aircraft to use the airport. Suvarnabhumi has the capacity of 45 million passengers a year but is now handling over 51 million annually and urgently needs expanding to keep pace with growth. AoT says that Don Muang should be able to handle 60 million passengers by 2017, taking considerable pressure off Suvarnabhumi. In a report to the Cabinet resolution in June last year, AoT officials contended that restrictions on the use of Don Muang Airport were counterproductive to the development of the country’s travel industry. LPG price frozen THE ENERGY POLICY AND Planning Office (EPPO) has agreed to hold the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LGP) stable for another two months. Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal announced that the EPPO meeting had approved a two-month extension of the LPG price subsidy policy. Thailand’s price of B18.13 per kilogram of LPG was originally set to be adjusted on Monday (April 1). The Energy Minister said the delay in adjusting the price
was because of the March 3 elections for the Governor of Bangkok. The election had delayed completion of the Bangkok part of a national survey by Suan Dusit poll on the effects of a higher LPG price on low-income earners and street venders. The Bangkok part of the survey is expected to be completed at the beginning of May, the minister said, so the LPG price will remain unchanged until May 30. NNT

Booming biz for Myanmar wines M
yanmar may be best known for its decades of brutal military rule, but behind the bamboo curtain maverick entrepreneurs have toiled for years to put the nation on the map for the far from brutal art of winemaking. Vines cascade down terraces overlooking the vast mirror of Inle Lake in northeastern Myanmar, an unlikely setting for a budding wine industry tempting the tastebuds of tourists now flocking to the country as it opens up. Although it is known for its fertile soil, Myanmar’s tropical climate and relatively short days during the June-July peak budding period mean only a few grape types thrive. “Fungus is our biggest enemy. Greenhouse conditions here mean it often grows much better than grapes,” said Hans Leiendecker, the German director of wine operations at the Aythaya vineyard, which expected to sell 100,000 bottles in 2012 and double that number this year. Shan State’s clouded hills give the vineyard an elevation of around 1,100 metres above
Samoa Air launches fares based on weight SAMOA AIR HAS BECOME the world’s first airline to charge passengers accortding to their body weight, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. The “pay as you weigh” flights are “the fairest way of travelling,” Samoa Air chief executive Chris Langton, said. Under the new system, passengers must type their weight and the weight of their baggage into the online booking section of the airline’s website. The rates vary from about B30 to B130, depending on the distance flown. Passengers are weighed on scales at the airport, to check that they weren’t fibbing online.
Workers fill barrels with wine at the Red Mountain estate in Shan State. Photo: AFP/Soe Than Win sea level, meaning the vines enjoy cooler temperatures than in other tropical areas. “It’s cold and that produces the nice aromas,” Leiendecker said. Consumers, however, seem to have more of a thirst for red wines and Aythaya has found that Shiraz grows well. It is also testing German Dornfelder and Tempranillo. Myanmar’s winemakers have by necessity been “very experimental” and could develop well in the coming years, following in the footsteps of China, Thailand and India, said Denis Gastin, an Australia-
based writer specialising in Asian wine. He said the success of Myanmar’s first vineyards has encouraged a number of smaller operations to bud – which is likely to please hoteliers clamouring for local wines. Is the wine good? Gastin tested the Red Mountain range, also from Shan State, at a tropical wine symposium last year and was “pretty impressed”. “I was quite shocked about the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, I thought they were really very, very good,” he said. A
lthough many of us have dreamed it, Kamon ‘Mon’ Chookham actually built his own home, calling it Nakonnai. Smooth, sculpted walls form entrance ways, halls and rooms, while the lack of doors and open plan design create a real sense of uninterrupted freedom – it’s a combination of chic and fun. Unsurprisingly, the Songkhla native studied fine art and architecture at university in Bangkok. “I designed the whole house – it took me about a year. I now live here with my wife and two children.” It is also open to the public as a studio. Like many artists in Phuket, purely devoting himself to artistic endeavours doesn’t pay the bills, so Mon supports his income through music. “My friend and I play four nights a week at the Peach Hotel in Kata – we’re called ‘Happy Colour’ – I play saxophone and bongos, my friend sings, we do a lot of reggae.” Mon believes that despite a large number of artists – many of whom have been featured on this page – calling the island home, the artistic scene in Phuket is in a far from healthy state. According to Mon, this is why reproduction art flourishes locally. “The Phuket art community is good for business, well at least the reproduction paintings are, but it’s not so great for the community or at receiving support from the government. The government could do a lot more,” says Mon. A man who practices what he preaches, Mon has taken ideas for three Phuket-based projects to the relevant authorities since he’s been here, and each time has been told the same thing: no budget. “One of my ideas was to utilise the discarded red

I had lots of ideas of what I could do with that.” When not performing, the extremely talented Mon still creates artwork that is at once wonderful, thought-inspiring and environmentally aware. “I use a lot of reclaimed fishing boat wood and trash as material for artwork. Life is like a competition – sometimes you win, many times you lose. I took a look at my situation: I had had a big accident, but it wasn’t the end of my life. So I started getting back my life

E
arly one morning in 1999, sports trainer and endurance athlete Stefan Lange was out training on his bicycle in the German city of Hamburg for an upcoming triathlon. He was in peak physical condition, and hoped to soon add another title win to his belt. But in the space of a few moments, everything changed: as he cycled along a road near his home, he was struck by a car and thrown off his bike in the collision. As he lay on the road after the crash, he realised his injuries were serious: “I couldn’t move my legs. I knew it was bad.” In hospital over the next few days, the stark facts of his injuries became clear: his back was broken, his spine badly damaged – he would not be able to walk again. Even sitting up in his hospital bed was an impossibility, despite an emergency operation to try to repair some of the damage to his spine. In the weeks and months that followed, naturally there were periods of despair. But Mr Lange wasn’t going to stay still for long.
“Life is like a competition – sometimes you win, many times you lose,” he says. “I took a look at my situation: I had had a big accident, but it wasn’t the end of my life. So I started getting back my life, millimetre by millimetre.” Five weeks after his accident he was finally able to lift himself from his bed – to the surprise of his doctors – and in the same week started training in the hospital rehabilitation centre. He started learning to use a wheelchair, training to build up his arm and shoulder muscles in particular – and the mobility he regained from using a wheelchair gave him new hope. “With my first wheelchair I had this feeling that I was so free – I wasn’t in ‘jail’ any more. This was a big part of my free life.” Soon Mr Lange was setting out for long rides around the hospital grounds in a hand-bike, the low-riding wheelchair used by disabled athletes. On the first day he covered 10 kilometres by handbike – within three weeks he was up to 30 kilometres a day: “I wasn’t quick – I needed six hours to cover 30 kilometres – but I could do it.” As his own mobility returned, he took to helping other wheelchair users recover theirs. He set out a short training route near the hospital, a two-kilometre hill ride that took about 20 minutes to complete, and was leading groups of handbikers around the course. Over the months and years that followed, Mr Lange studied for a diploma in wheelchair sport training. He took a job at the Hamburg hospital where he had been treated after his own accident, and worked for eight years as a clinical sports therapist, helping people who had suffered similar disabilities to get their lives back on track. He’s a firm believer that sports are an important option for people who have suffered seriously disabling accidents, because it helps them realise that their injuries need not mean the end of their active lives. Over the years he has competed at international level in parathlete triath-
lons and team bike races in Europe, winning trophies and setting several new time records on the handbike. For the past several years Mr Lange has lived on Lanzarote, in the Spanish Canary Islands, where he’s founded a training centre for disabled and able-bodied athletes, and organises regular races across the rugged island. Mr Lange visited Phuket for the first time this year, and spent several weeks at the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure complex in Thalang district. He hails Thanyapura as the perfect sports training environment for disabled athletes, in part because the complex is fully accessible by wheelchair users, and in part because of the very high standards of the facilities and support staff. The experience was so positive that he will return to Thanyapura later this month, and is making plans to bring other athletes to the sport complex to train. Although he’s staying in top shape, he’s set aside his own competitive goals for now, to help other people achieve theirs. “Now is the time to be giving back,” he says.

Austerity cuts key to misbehaviour
A poll of 13,000 teachers in the UK conducted by the Nasuwt union has found a general consensus that education cuts owing to austerity measures are leading to a rise in misbehaviour in British schools. More than a fifth of all British teachers say they have been physically threatened, while one in seven had been hit or kicked. Last year, Michael Gove, education secretary, allowed academies and free schools to hire unqualified staff, as private schools do.

The celebrations at BISP began on Friday March 22, and kicked off with a parade of the 42 different nations represented by the student body at BIS Phuket, with around 800 students wearing either their national costume or national colours. Stage performances were next, followed by food tasting at 12 different international food stalls run by the BISP parents. Meanwhile, children and parents from HeadStart celebrated their International Day at their sport and leisure club, FunStart, on March 29, where there were plenty of games, songs, food and fun activities for the children and their parents to get involved with. Miki Edouard, manager, school administration and registration for HeadStart explained the importance of such events, “This special event is a time for us all to come together to share a little of our own cultural backgrounds with other members of the community, as well as a chance for us all to learn lots of exciting and interesting things about the world.”

Thai-Filipino exchange teacher deal sealed
T
hailand and the Philippines will sign a teacher exchange agreement in the next two months. Details of the agreement were finalised at a bilateral meeting in March, held on the sidelines of the 47th Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (Seameo) Council Conference in Hanoi, Vietnam. Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanchana said Armin Luistro, secretary of the Philippines’ Education Department, had assured him that the first batch of 50 Englishspeaking teachers would be sent to teach in Thai secondary schools on one-year deployments once the agreement is signed. Thai teachers will later be sent to
Filipino schools to learn new teaching methods there. Mr Phongthep said the ministry has yet to decide on how many Thai teachers will be sent, as it will depend on the Philippines’ demand. “It is mutually beneficial. Thai students will learn English from our teachers and Filipino teachers can learn Thai culture and then share that knowledge with others when they return,” Mr Luistro said. “They will bring something home, and they might also learn to cook tom yum goong.” The exchange of students, teachers and the sharing of education standards is one of Seameo’s missions to support Asean integration, he added. The Phuket News speaks with Dr Kai Goh, the founder and CEO of Southeast Asia’s only medically licensed rehabilitation and detoxification centre, Bhavana.
Why did you choose Phuket to set up Bhavana?
Above: Bhavana founder Dr Kai Goh. Above right: The entrance to the Bhavana Phuket centre.
Phuket was specifically chosen for its local infrastructure, high quality medical staff, JCI Hospitals and strong support from onisland AA [Alcoholics Anonymous] and NA [Narcotics Anonymous] groups. External factors include its excellent direct air links to major cities and ease of transit, very crucial for medically fragile patients travelling and therefore not requiring lengthy transits. Lastly Phuket lends itself to a resort and holiday feel which can promote healing, reflection and help with confidentiality and privacy. No-one would really question you if you said you were on holiday in Phuket for a month.
What makes Bhavana different from other treatment centres in Phuket?
Bhavana is the only dedicated, international-standard treatment hospital facility for addiction in Asia.
The Bhavana rehabilitation centre is situated on the south coast of Phuket. For more information, call 084 845 4539 or visit bhavana healing.com

Have perceptions of addiction changed? Classifications certainly seem to have.
Do certain groups have a higher propensity for addiction than others?
Yes, but slowly. People still have the image of addicts as ‘junkies’ and societal drop-outs. This is far from the truth, as we see people from all demographics. This is particularly true now as we see more of the ‘high functioning’ addicts, who hardly fit the stereotype.
For expats it’s alcohol and cocaine; Thais stimulants; and other Asian countries alcohol, sleeping pills and party drugs. We are also seeing a rise in all groups in gambling addiction. Virtually in all groups, they suffer from coexisting disorders and dual diagnosis problems like anxiety, depression, obsessivecompulsive disorders and ADHD, to name just a few.

The biggest challenge has been finding suitably qualified staff. We pride ourselves in having only Master’s qualified level therapists. I am also

The importance of renewable energy Fabian Doppler editor@classactmedia.co.th
Thailand was one of the first countries in Asia to adopt a political action plan to promote sustainable energy production and to actively encourage alternative energy investment
Fabian Doppler has been a lawyer for various environmental groups over the years, including Phuket-based SEEK. He is a partner at FRANK Legal & Tax.
A
mong the expat community in Phuket there is a growing sense of frustration with regards to the severe environmental issues on the island. On a national scale, however, it is in fact encouraging to see what is being done with regards to sustainability and what has actually been achieved already. For example, Thailand was one of the first countries in Asia to adopt a political action plan to promote sustainable energy production and to actively encourage alternative energy investment, in 2008. In this regard, Thailand is now a role model in the region with currently 6.5 per cent of energy production being renewable. By 2021, the aim is 25 per cent. To achieve these ambitious goals and promote the development of green technologies, the Thai Board of Investment (“BOI”) grants significant incentives for investment in energy conservation and alternative energy as well as production of eco-friendly materials and products. For certain sectors, there is also the possibility to obtain BOI promotion by changing production processes in order to reduce environmental impact. The incentives include tax breaks, exemption from import duties, relaxation of work permit rules and even possibility of land ownership for foreign companies. This kind of government promotion is available in Phuket as well. It is a fact that energy consumption in Thailand has risen by approximately 47 per cent over the past 10 years. As for all other net importers of crude oil, it is a political necessity for Thailand to take steps to diver-

In the recent past, Thailand has successfully installed wind turbines along coastal areas where the wind speed is high. Biomass power plants in the country produce 2,800 MW of alternative energy. Gasohol fuel using ethanol, although not being without concerns, is now well established. Also the number of solar energy plants is rising at an amazing pace. Thailand is now Southeast Asia’s biggest solar power producer. Renewables are the
energy source of the future and it is good to know that Thailand is preparing for it. Solar power generation is of course also interesting as a residential installation. As Thailand is situated in the tropics, the country’s clear days and strong sun provide regular energy for solar panels. There are currently two methods to use solar energy: 1) Photovoltaic solar cells that change sunlight directly into electricity and 2) solar thermal collectors for the purpose of either direct heating or indirect electrical power generation.

THE BIG LIST WEIRD MEDICAL DEVICES Building your own dialysis machine to save money seems like a extreme instance of medical self-help, but it’s hard to argue with results. In centuries past, a combination of ignorance and hope saw the proliferation of all sorts of quack medical gadgets – as well as a few devices that actually worked as intended. Here are a few of the more bizarre devices on the medical books. Rectal bellows: These smoothly-finished instruments were used for the application of tobacco smoke enemas in the 18th century, a treatment said to promote respiration – or at the very least, a sharp intake of breath. Later developments of this popular treatment in the 19th century included electrified versions, featuring a heated nozzle element, which was touted as a cure for everything from headaches to back pain. Phrenology machine: Although it seems ridiculous now, the quack practice of phrenology – using measurements of the skull to diagnose all sorts of personal deficiencies – was once considered a miracle of medical science. It was supposed that the shape of the brain determined personality, talents and mental abilities – and machines were devised to measure the brain without cutting into the skull. This machine measured the dimensions of the skull and produced a printed tape that evaluated the character – or lack thereof – of the patient. Self-propelled endoscope: In news that seems to be straight out of the 1987 movie Innerspace, researchers in Japan have devised a miniature submarine that can swim through the human gut and send back photographs. The pill-sized self-propelled robot is an alternative to regular endoscopes for medical examinations, which are operated through a tube – either down the throat, or up the backside. But the Mermaid, as it’s known, can be swallowed – or inserted – and controlled remotely by a joystick. Anti-masturbation yokes: These eye-watering devices date from an era when too much masturbation was faulted as a general source of moral decline, because it robbed the male body of sperm and “vital energies.” In Victorian times excessive self-stimulation was considered a serious threat to physical and mental health, leading to weakness, madness, and even death. The objects shown were prescribed by doctors for male sufferers of excessive masturbation – something similar was available for women. The ‘Flying Ambulance’: This must have seemed strange at the time, but the horse-drawn “flying ambulance” designed by Napoleon’s surgeon-in-chief in the 1790s is the direct forerunner of the modern motor ambulance. Until the ambulance was developed, injured soldiers had to try to treat their own injuries in the field, or wait until the battle was finished – if they were lucky to live that long. But the flying ambulance, built on top of a gun carriage, let army medics carry out emergency surgery as it carried soldiers off the battlefield.
Homemade kidney machine keeps man alive for 13 years
A
Mr Hu with his homemade hemodialyser.
Chinese man with kidney disease has kept himself alive for more than 13 years using a homemade dialysis machine. Hu Songwen from Jiangsu Province was diagnosed with kidney failure 20 years ago and for six years underwent dialysis bloodfiltering treatments in a hospital 13 times every month – an expensive treatment that used up all his family’s savings. So Hu started putting together his own dialysis machine, buying the necessary parts and solutions to carry out the blood filtering treatment at home. He says his homemade dialysis only costs around 60 yuan (B280) for each treatment – an eighth of
the cost of a hemodialyisis treatment in a Chinese hospital. Hu said the secret to his moneysaving method was to pare away the expensive extras found on “goldplated” hospital dialysis machines – leaving only important parts like the blood-filtering dialyzer, which can be purchased for as little as 100 yuan (B450). Although home dialysis kits are more common in other parts of the world, in China they must be imported and are expensive. But Chinese nephrologist Sun Wei warned that Hu’s method could easily lead to infections and should not be imitated. Sun explained that Chinese state medical insurance would generally reimburse over 90 per cent of the cost of hemodialysis.
Robot dinosaurs invade Australia
A
n Australian billionaire has ordered more than 100 life-size robot dinosaurs to populate his new holiday resort. Eccentric Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer is having the robots built in China for his new resort on the Sunshine coast north of Brisbane. Two robot dinosaurs are already on display at the resort: a 20-metre long life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex, and a 3.5-metre high Deinosuchus – effectively a giant crocodile. But Mr Palmer boasts that the public haven’t seen anything yet. “We’ll have the world’s biggest dinosaur exhibit, with 165 animatronic dinosaurs,” he said. The next arrivals include robot replicas of two plant-eating dinosaurs – a 1.2 tonne brachiosaurus and a 7-metre tall mamenchisaurus – which are due to be installed later this month. Each robot dinsoaur is custom-made, and are typically able to move their tails, chest, and faces. A larger-than-life character who has made a fortune in mining, Mr Palmer last month announced plans to build the Titanic II, a modern replica of the

ro golfer Sergio Garcia might be considering a change of name to Tarzan, after playing a shot from the midst of an oak tree during the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Florida. The Spaniard already was having a rough time at Bay Hill – he made a 9 on the par-5 sixth hole – when his tee shot at No. 10 landed in a saddle between the oak’s main limbs, about four metres above the ground. Garcia looked up in the tree, stood on a cart and leapt to pull himself up into the tree, then studied his options before playing a one-handed, back-handed shot out to the fairway. “I knew they were looking around the tree,” said another pro, William McGirt. “I didn’t know they were looking in the tree. “I looked over and Sergio

ill-fated Titanic luxury liner that sank after a collision with an iceberg on its maiden voyage 100 years ago. Mr Palmer’s plan is for guests on the replica Titanic to wear period costume and dine from the same menu as passengers on the original voyage. He wouldn’t say how much the new ship would cost, but said he was funding the project because he wanted “to spend my money before I die.”

T
hey are the “odd couple” making waves among Patong Beach’s exuberant bar and restaurant bar scene with their colourful, eco-friendly, revamped Barefoot Beach Shack. Long time Phuket resident and artist, Australian John Underwood is 201cm [6’6”] big on ideas and a driving force behind the former Sole Mio Italian bar and restaurant’s renaissance. His enthusiastic business partner, local businesswoman and entrepreneur Suriya “Aod” (pronounced “odd”) Sinsoue is 152.4 [5ft] and intent on creating a different dining and entertainment experience on the crowded beachfront. Together they are “the odd couple”, but in appearance only. When it comes to giving Patong Beach’s somewhat standard, formulaic bar scene a jolt in the arm, they think very much alike. John, owner of Underwood Art Factory, and Aod met by chance through a mutual business deal and became immediate friends. Both saw the potential for John to bring some of his artistic design magic – he has designed for many hotels on Phuket, including creating the iconic Indigo Pearl Resort “tin mine” look – to the former Italian restaurant and bar. Aod, who is fluent in Italian, Thai and English, saw the potential to create a bar and restaurant with what she calls an “antique” look.
On Phuket for 23 years, Aod owns other businesses and was happy to step back and let John and his team give her bar a completely new design. This has translated into a transformed, ecofriendly building, featuring colourful two-seaters made from recycled doors, more than 20 brightly coloured ceiling fans to maintain air flow in the open air bar, coloured fabric collected by John over 20 years, stressed wood walls, aged tin roofing and even an ancient looking piano straight from the honky tonk era with a piano player to match. John’s team laboured from 2am to 8am several months to avoid interrupting the high season revelry. Bluesy Tuesdays are music nights. Jazz veteran South Side Sam, who had played with Muddy Waters and other greats in the US, jams at the piano, attracting random passers-by to the bar. Saturdays feature a “piano duel” between South Side Sam and Lionel
Liverace on his baby, pink grand to join a long list of classical piano duos – Phuket style. Barefoot offers more than 70 choices of Thai, international, vegetarian and Italian food, created by Chef Jeremy Kelly, from America. The Barefoot Beach Shack bar and restaurant is located on Patong Beach, at the end of Soi Loma, directly across Patong Beach Road, Thanon Sawatdirak. Open 10am-midnight. Reservations: 085 619 6686 or Jeremy 087 428 5570.

Nine of the best On a trip to the Similan islands, Claire Connell dives right in Claire Connell editor1@classactmedia.co.th
“T
ao, tao, tao!” Along with two Chinese tourists, I rushed to the side of the speedboat at the sound of happy cries from our Thai tour staff. “Tao” means turtle in Thai, and indeed, just below the surface of the water was a large sea turtle, cruising around the side of the boat. Cameras were flashing and we jumped into the sea to get a closer look, but by this time the turtle was la-
zily headed out into the bay. Welcome to the Similans – a tranquil island group of white sands and clear blue water. The nine islands making up the Similans (the name derives from the Malay word for 'nine', sembilan), are located off Phang Nga, about a one and a half hour speed boat trip west of Khao Lak. Boats depart from Tap Lamu Pier, just north of Sarasin Bridge. Thanks to a stroke of good luck, today on my Similan Pro Dive snorkelling trip there are only three of us on board. As the Chinese couple have their own Chinese-speaking Thai guide, I’m lucky to have Prince of Songkla student and Pro Dive intern, Bee, all to myself. Bee, 20, is originally from Nakhon Sri Thammarat, but moved to Phuket to study a tourism degree at the university. She’s in her first year of the degree, and so far has completed six enjoyable months of a one year work experience programme with Similan Pro Dive. The trip was to take us to several of the stunning islands. Jumping into the waters off Koh Ba Ngu was an amazing experience. We saw an abundant array of tropical fish, two more turtles, but unfortunately none of the elusive manta rays that the area is known for. Not surprisingly, the area is dubbed one of the best diving sites in the world.

Clockwise from top left: The pristine Koh Meang; the view from Sail Rock; the giant sea turtle that slowly swam by; Bee the tour guide takes a closer look; some of the amazing underwater views in the Similans
Next up was Koh Similan, which is famous for its 'Sail Rock' natural outcrop. After a rather precarious scramble up a cliff, you are rewarded with majestic views across the bay, and down to the blue-green water and rocks below. It made for the perfect photo opportunity. Next up was Koh Payu, and finally on to Koh Meang, where we would be staying the night. The island has many tents set up for the large groups of Russian and Chinese tourists who frequently camp here. However, there are also basic bungalows – either fan or air conditioned – available. Meals are served either on land or aboard a large sailing boat, moored off the beach. The Similans are part of a larger national park established in 1982, and are closed to visitors for half the year due to the monsoon season, which brings with it strong sea swells and winds, making it dangerous for boats. That's why every November, when the park reopens, tourists and local visitors alike seize the opportunity to visit this spectacular spot. So too do the region’s commercial fisherman. Illegal commercial fishing in the park is a big issue – with fisherman poaching large numbers of exotic fish every year from the protected national park. But for now, at least, the Similan islands remain intact and provide excellent diving and snorkelling areas to explore. With white sandy beaches, the Similans, particularly Koh Similan and Koh Meang, are the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of Phuket. Just make sure you get in quick – the park closes at the end of April for the low season. Claire Connell travelled courtesy of Phuket Travel Company and Similan Pro Dive. The trip, including all park entry fees, hotel pick-up, accommodation and meals, is priced at around B6,500 per person. Phuket Travel Co. offers daily tours to the Similans during the high season. The office is location on Soi Banzan, east of Jungceylon. For more information visit phukettravelcompany.com or call 087 282 5086.

Solar airplane to fly across the US
T
he first solar airplane to attempt a crossing of the United States takes off from San Francisco next month, bound for New York. The Swiss-built Solar Impulse aircraft has already made a successful nine-hour intercontinental flight from Madrid, Spain to Rabat, Morocco in June 2012. With a wingspan of 63.3 metres, it is nearly the same width as a Boeing 747 – although it weighs 1,600 kg compared to Boeing’s 400 tonnes, and carries only a single pilot. Solar Impulse will leave San Francisco, California on 1 May, and work its way to Phoenix, Dallas, Atlanta, and Washington D.C., before heading to New York City. The plane is made largely of carbon fibre with photovoltaic cells that can recharge the aircraft’s batteries enough to keep it flying through the night. It has already made a 26-hour flight in Europe. The plane is capable of flying across the United States at 69 km per hour, around a tenth of the speed of a commercial airliner. Along the way, its pilots intend to show off the plane at technology showcases and conferences.
“The question is not to use the solar power for normal airlines, “ said co-pilot and company president Bertrand Piccard last week. “The question is more to demonstrate that we can achieve incredible goals, almost impossible goals, with new technologies, without fuel, just with solar energy, and raise awareness that it we can do it in the air, of course everybody can do it on the ground.” The company says they are working on a prototype of a solar plane they intend to fly around the world in 2015.
Supercomputer junked after time at top

ts brief run as the world’s fastest supercomputer now over, the IBM Roadrunner is being dismantled after just two years on the job. The Roadrunner, which held the world’s-fastest computer title in 2008 and early 2009, was the first supercomputer to reach petaflop speeds (a million, billion floatingpoint operations per second). Housed at Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico, Roadrunner was designed to model nuclear weapon blasts for the US military – a development that has effectively made nu-
clear weapons tests obsolete. The US$120 million (B3.5 billion) computer used 296 server racks, 122,400 processor cores, and featured parallel networks of an enhanced version of the Cell microprocessor used in the PlayStation 3.
Although the computer is still the 22nd fastest in the world, researchers say its power bill is so large that it is not worth keeping Roadrunner going. Los Alamos has already installed a newer, cheaper, faster supercomputer, dubbed Cielo. Roadrunner lost its title as the world’s-fastest in late 2009 to another supercomputer, Jaguar, which reached 1.76 petaflops at the time. In 2012, Jaguar hit 17.6 petaflops, prompting researchers to look toward speeds 1,000 times faster than a petaflop.

D
o you remember Mortal Kombat? The game that spawned over six sequels and two live-action movies was released in the arcade in 1992. At the time of its release, it was the bloodiest fighting title in gaming history. Once it was ported to both Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, users were engrossed in a story involving Shaolin monks, monstrous villains, and even a Hollywood actor who would punch opponents in the crotch while doing a split. It was a simpler time in gaming. Each character had their special move during gameplay. But it was the fatalities that became an instant hit. Each character had their own finishing move to end a fight, which they used to kill their opponent in a gory fashion. With cheat codes, gamers could even shrink their opponents into babies. Mortal Kombat was originally intended to be a game featuring actionfilm star Jean-Claude Van Damme. When he backed out, the nowdefunct Midway Games created this title. In fact, the developers kept the Kumite death tournament from the Van Damme movie Blood Sport as part of the central plot in the game’s story. It created controversy for the violence and blood. When senatorial hearings on game violence in the US were held in the early 1990s, much of the discussion centered around Mortal Kombat. A true classic, the game has been named on several “best of” lists, including Time magazine’s Top 100 Greatest Video Games of All-Time list in 2012.

GI Joe: Retaliation
ow expectations are the most difficult to disappoint. It can be fairly said that GI Joe: Retaliation is a better movie than its predecessor, The Rise of Cobra, mainly because the task of carrying the movie is placed on the ample shoulders of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Johnson is a box office phenomenon – the former pro-wrestler’s 16 movies have made more than US$2.6 billion in global cinema sales, and over the last few years he’s developed a unique career as a franchise fixer: parachuting into sequels and saving them from flop-death. Here the Rock parachutes in to save the GI Joes, as a team member named Roadblock – a hard-headed character from the GI Joe toy, comic book and cartoon franchise. In the early scenes, Roadblock and the other “Joes”, lead by Duke (Channing Tatum) from the first movie, infiltrate a bunker in Pakistan to secure rogue nuclear warheads. The plan goes without a hitch – until almost the entire GI Joe unit are wiped out by a sneak attack, including Duke. Of course, it turns out that the terrorist group Cobra is behind the attack, and so Roadblock leads the survivors in a quest for vengeance. But just who are they after? Cobra’s agent, a villain named Zartan, is using a skin made of “nanobots” to disguise himself as the President of the United States, and has locked the
real president in a basement. Although Zartan is in theory played by Arnold “The Mummy” Vosloo, the actor is relegated to what may be the briefest credited role in motion picture history – while impersonating the president, for all but a few seconds of the movie, he’s played with great conviction by Jonathan Pryce, who also plays the real president. As Roadblock and the surviving Joes, Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki) and Flint (D.J. Cotrona) close in on their enemies, they enlist the help of yet another action icon: Bruce Willis, in at least his third outing this year as a semi-retired American hero, this time one named General Joseph Colton – the “Joe” that the GI Joes are named after. There’s no shortage of action: this movie is crafted to appeal to its key target audience, which is people who play computer games. It may the the first movie to exhibit gaming “cut scenes”: small pieces of exposition in between generally mindless battles featuring heavy weapons fire and massive explosions. It’s surprisingly effective: all the action scenes are choreographed like kung fu fights, even the gun battles – but perhaps the best scene is a sword skirmish high on the face of a Himalayan mountain, between rival ninjas secured from the rock by impossibly long bungy cords. It’s all a bit brainless really, but thanks to The Rock it easily surpasses expectations. What’s not to like? Go Joe!

A
design exhibition on fictional British spy James Bond opened in Shanghai this week, just months after Chinese government censors cut parts of the latest film Bond film Skyfall. But Neil McConnon, lead curator of “Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style” said there had been no censorship of the show. “We have encountered censorship before in some exhibitions, but not in this exhibition,” McConnon said. Parts of Skyfall – partly shot in Shanghai – proved too sensitive for the Chinese authorities. A scene showing prostitution in Macau was removed, as was a line in which Bond’s nemesis mentions being

US director Martin Scorsese will make a television series of Gangs of New York, the story he brought to the big screen in an Oscar-nominated 2002 movie. Scorsese is teaming up with studio Miramax to make the small screen series, about fighting between newly-arrived Irish immigrants and local “natives” in New York at the turn of the 20th century. “This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film,” Scorcese said. “A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world to life.”
Robert Redford in ‘Captain America’ sequel
Veteran American actor and director Robert Redford will appear in the next Captain America blockbuster – but insists he is not selling out. Redford will play a leader of the secret government agency S.H.I.E.L.D in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, out next year: “I’m doing this film because it’s different. It’s a new thing for me. And I like the idea of stepping into new territory,” Redford told the L.A. Times. The sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger will again star Chris Evans in the title role, with Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow.

Jeffrey says jazz music is not only a musical genre, but a “universal language of sharing and a multi-cultural message of love and tolerance”. Everybody is invited to celebrate

My favourite thing about playing music is the ability to create my own sound and put myself into it. Do you get stage fright? How do you deal with it? I do get stage fright but I guess it’s just something you have to get over. Tell us about one of your best performances. I guess my most recent one at the talent show. Who inspires you musically? The bands that I listen to inspire me musically. Bands like the Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Kings of Leon have been my musical influences for such a long time.

Phuket FC lay new pitch

FOOTBALL
P
huket Football Club last week held a turf-laying ceremony on the pitch of their new Sports Complex, which is being developed in Chalong. The first sods of grass were laid by Phuket FC chairman Pamuke Atchariyachay and Mr Ron Van Oijen, the chief executive officer of AIA Thailand, which is sponsoring the new sports complex project. Some of the Phuket FC footballers also got their hands dirty laying their new pitch. The pitch has been under preparation since January, while a new European-standard fishbone drainage system has been installed on the site. The completed Sports Complex will include the new standard practice pitch, a football academy, camp accomodation for visiting athletes, a seven-player field, an indoor astroturf field, a swimming pool, a fitness centre, and a physical therapy centre. The complex is expected to be completed within a year. It will serve as a practice field for the Islanders, and help the team cultivate sporting skills among young Phuket

Phuket Lomas head for Singapore tournament
LOCAL YOUTH RUGBY team Phuket Lomas are on their way to a tri-nations rugby tournament in Singapore this weekend. The tournament, sponsored by Westpac, will see the Lomas join teams from from Ta’Moko Lions RFC (Singapore) and Operation Breakthrough (Hong Kong) in an Under-17s, 15-a-side rugby tournament at Centaurs Sports Park on Saturday and Sunday. More than 60 players are taking part. Hosted by Community Outreach Rugby Development (CORD), the tournament aims

to highlight the plight of at-risk children and how – through involvement in sports – their lives can change for the better. Inspired by the Tri-Nations series between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, CORD Director and Ta’Moko Lions Head Coach Daniel Khor reached out to the Phuket Lomas and Operation Breakthrough. “This is a great opportunity for the kids to learn about other organisations similar to CORD and make friends with kids from other countries who have shared the same struggles.” Like CORD, both Phuket Lomas and Operation Break-
through were established to combat the growing numbers of children breaking the law, skipping school, performing poorly in class, or affected by tragedies like the Indian Ocean tsunami, which devastated many coastal communities. “After the tsunami of 2004 it became even more important for rugby to have a greater role in supporting and helping children affected by that tragedy,” said Phuket Lomas director Pat Cotter. “Hence the Phuket Lomas Youth rugby development programme was formed for local Thai children both affected by the Tsunami and from underprivileged backgrounds.”
joked that he used to be a football player and would like to come and play on the new pitch when it is ready, in about three months.
THE PRESIDENT OF THE Phuket United professional futsal club, Mr Preechawut “Pap” Keesin, has quit the club. Mr Preechawut confirmed his resignation at a meeting at the Patong Bay Resortel on Saturday (March 30). “The reason that I have quit is because I have many things to do with my business and other matters,” Mr Preechawut said at the meeting, adding that the club now needed more support from others. But Mr Preechawut said that he did not think the Phuket United futsal team would be
adversely effected by his decision: I believe the club will be okay in the future,” he said. Mr Preechawut said he had spent tens of millions of baht to keep Phuket United running, and that other supporters would now need to help the club financially. Phuket United has enjoyed a successful season in the GMM Sport Thailand Futsal Premier League, finishing among the top-five teams in the league when the season ended two weeks ago. So far, a new president for Phuket United has not been named.

Away win sends Islanders soaring FOOTBALL
Yamaha League 1/Thai Division 1 Team
Kazira Hans editor@classactmedia.co.th
A
narrow win over TTM FC in Bangkok on Sunday sent Phuket FC into second place on the Yamaha League 1 table – one of the coveted automatic promotion berths for next year’s Thai Premier League. TTM FC have dropped “Lopburi” from their team name over a dispute over the conditions at their home stadium in that province, which was ruled unfit to host TPL games after an inspection. Now without a home stadium since the fallout with Lopburi, TTM FC rented the Thephassadin stadium in Bangkok for the game and the unforgiving heat of the capital took its toll on both teams. Phuket FC started the game in the top five of Yamaha League 1, while TTM FC was among the bottom two. Many thought this game would be an easy win for the Islanders, but it didn’t turn out that way: both teams sent on their best 11, Phuket hoping for a win to take them near the top of the league, and TTM hoping to push away from the
Phuket FC’s Dudu (right) in action against TTM in Bangkok. relegation zone. The game started off slow in the mid-afternoon heat, and stayed the same for the first 15 minutes. The Islanders were the first to pick up the pace, with a shot at goal from a free kick from Kritsada Sakaew that was saved by TTM’s goalkeeper. A minute later Phuket had another opportunity from a pass by Ake-artit Somjit to Dudu, but TTM’s defence cleared the danger just before
Mass brawl mars TPL game in Ratchaburi FOOTBALL Kazira Hans editor@classactmedia.co.th
YET ANOTHER FOOTBALL brawl broke out last weekend after a Thai Premier League match, this time in Ratchaburi, where local fans were angered by the referee’s decision to award Chonburi FC a penalty a few minutes before stoppage time. The home side was 1-0 ahead in the last minute before Chonburi FC’s Thiago Kunha took a long pass and went one-on-one with Ratchaburi FC’s goalkeeper Ukrit Wongmeema. Ukrit rushed out for a save but ended up at Kunha’s feet. The referee called a free kick right outside the penalty box, but – after a consultation with the linesman – changed his free kick decision and awarded Chonburi FC a penalty instead. The referee’s decision caused tempers to flare on the sidelines and in the stands, and the brawl started when fans began to file out of the stadium after the game. Chonburi’s visiting fans were reportedly drunk and lit up firecrackers to celebrate
their dramatic draw, with some damaging Ratchaburi fans’ motorbikes and cars parked nearby. A group of Ratchaburi fans retaliated, damaging the Chonburi fans’ bus and reportedly throwing an unidentified object inside. The violence escalated and continued until nearly 10pm, with several fans of both teams injured and sent to hospital. The Thai Premier League has ruled that both teams will be penalised and fined B50,000 each for their fans’ involvement in the brawl, and B30,000 each for damage caused to property. Ratchaburi FC was fined a further B10,000 because their fans threw objects into the field during the game, but the TPL didn’t go as far as banning the fans from future games. Both teams were also fined B12,000 for sideline offences, when their staff went outside the tactical box marked beside the team’s substitutes bench. Chonburi FC’s head coach Wittaya Laohakul, meanwhile, was fined B20,000 and banned from attending the next two games, for castigating the referee after the game.
the Brazilian striker could take aim. The game was nearly a one-sided attack by Phuket FC for most of the first half, and the referee frequently stopped play after strong tackles. The home-side had their closest opportunity at nearly the end of the first half from a five-yard header, but their striker flicked the ball too wide and the half ended with no score. The second half proceeded

in the same manner, with more aggressive tackles: Phuket’s Nene Bi was pushing it when he charged TTM’s player in the penalty area, but the referee let that slip. Just a minute later, Phuket almost took a lead when Kritsada clipped a ball towards Geoffrey Doumeng, but the Frenchman flicked his header over the crossbar. Dudu was then given a yellow card for a high boot which he angrily contested. Two minutes later he was replaced, and the visitors effectively removed their most

likely scorer. At the same time, TTM replaced their hard-working but isolated towering centreforward, Vigan Qehaja, and their attacks instantly became more mobile. The game became more aggressive as stoppage time drew closer. The referee seemed to oblivious to both coaches’ frustrations, which included an incident when Chana Sonwiset was charged from behind and Ake-artit was tackled down inside TTM’s penalty area. But instead of awarding
Phuket FC a penalty, the referee ruled it a corner kick and that had Phuket’s sideline staff jumping out of their seats. As game entered its last 10 minutes it looked likely that the result would be a no score draw. But Phuket’s Kritsada won a disputed free kick from right sideline and tried his luck, curling the shot in front of the goal. TTM’s goalkeeper came out for a save, but missed and slapped the ball into his own net – sending the 400-or-so visiting Phuket fans roaring with delight, as TTM’s chances of victory went up in smoke. TTM spent their last 10 minutes of the game pressuring Phuket for an equaliser, but couldn’t convert their attempts. The game ended with a Phuket’s victory and sent the Islanders to second on the league table, with eight points from four games played. Phuket FC next play at home at Surakul Stadium on Sunday April 7, against “The Navy” Rajnavi FC. Kick-off is at 6.30pm and tickets are B100. Additional reporting by Andy Wray, thaileaguefoot ball.com
Fan violence threatens Thai football COMMENT Kazira Hans editor@classactmedia.co.th
THE BRAWL IN RATCHAburi this weekend, between fans angered by the referee’s decision to award a late penalty that yielded an equaliser, is the latest incident of violence afflicting Thai football games. A few weeks ago in Rayong, a referee’s questionable decision earned him a punch in the face from angry fans – which prompted a discussion about “human error” among referees. But the real issue about football violence in Thailand is this – what are the necessary security measures in our football stadiums, and how
does the home clubs execute such measures? It was reported this weekend that Ratchaburi FC allowed their upset fans to exit the stadium past the stands where Chonburi fans were seated, without supervision from security guards or policemen. A confrontation there was almost unavoidable – especially when some hot blooded fans were fueled by alcohol, upset by the result, and being provoked by rival fans. The TPL have ruled that, since the Ratchaburi fans were provoked by the Chonburi fans, they will not be banned from future home games. But their behavior has tainted Thai football’s attempts to provide good, clean matches that can be enjoyed by people
of all ages, including families and children. Can they trust that if they go to a football game they will get home safe? Phuket had a taste of this problem just last year in Krabi, when Phuket fans were surrounded by rival Krabi fans. In the end it took a squad of policemen to escort them out of town and on their way home to Phuket. Security personnel at most Thai football games are pretty much like hired guns: they are either civilian volunteers or policemen who would like to return home to their family or back to their duty soon as the game ends. Will every home club have enough manpower to manage crowd control should anything
happen? This latest incident gives reason for many teams, Phuket included, to examine their existing security measures. Phuket fans are familiar with walking past visiting fans out of the stadium after the game, but it would take only a small number of fans with too much alcohol in their system and a little provocation to start an incident. Are Thai football teams ready to seriously consider this problem and implement security measures commiserate with the professional football teams they want to be? Or will they just shrug it off, and we will have to wait until a football brawl causes bloodshed or a fatality before taking the issue seriously?

City cruise as Chelsea slip FOOTBALL
M
anchester City pounced on a st umble f rom Chelsea to tighten their grip on second place in the Premier League, as Manchester United took another stride towards the title. United’s 1-0 win at Sunderland gave them an 18-point lead but City cut that to 15 points by crushing Newcastle United 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Carlos Tevez scored the opening goal in the 41st minute and David Silva made it 2-0 before half-time. City captain Vincent Kompany added another in the 56th minute, and an own goal from James Perch made Newcastle’s misery complete. City now have a fivepoint lead in second place after Chelsea suffered a 2-1 loss at Southampton. Jay Rodriguez put the hosts ahead in the 23rd minute, but Chelsea captain John Terry equalised in the 33rd minute, heading in
Manchester City’s David Silva. Photo: Ilya Khokhlov from a corner. Rickie Lambert restored the hosts’ lead two minutes later with a superb free-kick from 25 yards, and the Saints held on for the win. Spurs won 2-1 at Swansea City to leapfrog Chelsea into third place, although they have played a game more. Jan Vertonghen’s put Tottenham ahead in the 17th minute and then teed up Gareth Bale to score from outside the goal area. Michu replied with a 71stminute header, but Spurs held
on for the win. Arsenal closed to within just two points of Chelsea with a 4-1 home win to Reading, who sank to the foot of the table in new manager Nigel Adkins’ first game in charge. Goals from Gervinho, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud saw Arsenal build a 3-0 lead in 67 minutes, and Mikel Arteta added a fourth from the penalty spot after Hal Robson-Kanu hit back for the visitors. Everton also took advantage of Chelsea’s slip-up with a 1-0 win at home to Stoke that put them in sixth place, thanks to a goal from Kevin Mirallas in the 28th minute. Manchester United took a step closer to their 20th English league title by grinding out a 1-0 win at Sunderland. While Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney rested ahead of an FA Cup quarter-final replay at Chelsea, Titus Bramble scored the game’s only goal in the 27th minute when he diverted Robin van Persie’s drilled shot into his own goal. The defeat put Sunderland four points above the
relegation zone in 16th place, although they’ve played more games than the lower teams. Elsewhere, an 81st-minute goal from Arouna Kone gave Wigan a 1-0 win at home to Norwich that hauled the team out of the relegation zone at Aston Villa’s expense. Meanwhile, Andy Carroll scored twice, with Gary O’Neil also on target, as West Ham United eased their own relegation fears by beating West Bromwich Albion 3-1. In The Phuket News tipping competition, congratulations to players jeltanic and NEIL who both topped the March monthly table with 78 points. In the overall standings, suncat100 remains a long way out in the lead on 539 points, although Blackrosebar on 495 has trimmed a few points from the gap. This month (April 2013) the competition is sponsored by Australia Bar & Grill in Kata. The monthly winner will receive a B3,000 voucher to spend at the venue. The overall winner at the end of the season will win a brand new Honda Scoopy courtesy of AP Honda.

Brumbies squeak ahead of Chiefs RUGBY UNION THE ACT BRUMBIES squeaked home after a contentious late penalty gave them a narrow win over the Northern Bulls, keeping the Australian side in front of champions Waikato Chiefs at the top of the Super 15 table. The Brumbies needed an after-the-siren penalty goal from Christian Lealiifano to down South Africa’s Bulls 23-20 to take back the overall competition lead from the Chiefs after their New Zealand derby win over the Auckland Blues. Last year’s champions the Chiefs, who beat the Coastal Sharks in the 2012 final, came out on top of a passionate clash with the Blues 23-16 to maintain their five-point lead in the New Zealand conference. The Sharks still lead the South African conference after their weekend bye but the Central Cheetahs closed to within three points and are in the playoff positions after a comfortable 34-16 win over the troubled Melbourne Rebels. Australia’s Queensland
Reds secured their firstever win in Dunedin with a 34-33 success over the Otago Highlanders, while the Canterbury Crusaders survived a late Western Stormers onslaught to win a thriller 19-14 in Cape Town. The Wellington Hurricanes notched up their third consecutive win with a 46-30 victory over South Africa’s Southern Kings to keep in touch for the playoffs, while the NSW Waratahs play Western Force in an Australian derby later Sunday. There was controversy in Canberra where Lealiifano kicked the Brumbies home after a disputed penalty following the fulltime siren. The Bulls had levelled the scores at 20-20 only a few minutes earlier before referee Jonathon White penalised Bulls captain Pierre Spies for not releasing the ball in a ruck. Tel e v i s io n r e pl a y s showed Brumbies scrumhalf Nic White lying on top of the ball, to indicate that the South African side should instead have been awarded the penalty. AFP

unbeaten since last July. Manly Sea Eagles are third after slamming a poor Wests Tigers 26-0 in Gosford. The Sea Eagles overcame a dreadful opening to run out five tries to nil winners – winger David Williams finishing with a double. Gold Coast maintained their strong start to the season as Penrith’s inability to find the finishing touch came back to haunt them in a 28-10 loss to the fourth-placed Titans at Penrith. Youngster Tyrone Roberts scored a superb try to help the fifth-placed Knights to a come-from-behind 28-12 win over Canberra in Newcastle on Sunday. St George Illawarra, without a win from the opening three games, upset sixthplaced Cronulla 25-12. On Monday, the New Zealand Warriors won their first NRL game in more than a year with a 20-18 defeat of the North Queensland Cowboys, and Syndey Roosters thrashed the Paramata Eels, inflicting inflicting a record 50-0 defeat at Allianz Stadium. S
outh Sydney have made their best start to an Australian National Rugby League season since 1971, with their fourth successive victory over Easter to share the competition lead with Melbourne Storm. The Rabbitohs won the last of their 20 premierships 42 years ago, and on the evidence of their Good Friday 17-12 victory over Canterbury before a record 52,000 crowd, they will be in the running for this year’s title. Scrum-half Adam Reynolds put forward another compelling case for NSW Origin selection after masterminding the win over the Bulldogs. Reynolds had the ball on a string with his pin-point kick for Nathan Merritt’s second half match-winner, capping a brilliant display at Sydney’s Olympic stadium. The try was Merritt’s league-best seventh of the season and moved the winger to 144 career tries and equal tenth for most tries in the history of the NRL.

FERGIE EXPECTS Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson makes his feelings known during this week’s FA Cup quarter final replay against Chelsea, which the Red Devils lost 1-0. However, they remain on track for the Premiership title. Photo: AFP/Glyn Kirk

M
anchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says his side must be fully focused on next week’s derby clash against Manchester City, in order to stay on course for the Premier League title this season. Although United must still play City at Old Trafford on April 8, Ferguson’s team need only 13 points from their
remaining matches to clinch a 20th English league title. “We have to win four games to get the title but the important thing is to focus on the next game which is Man City at home,” Sir Alex told Sky Sports. “I said before the game the players have galvanised themselves. The concentration and the focus [has been there] in every game, and 25 wins out of 30 is a record – that’s down to the efforts of the players.”
The Red Devils boss also saluted his team’s display at the Stadium of Light, the same ground where his side saw last season’s title slip out of their hands, with his defence in particular coming in for praise. “It was a battling performance by the players,” he added. “We picked up two or three injuries and it was the courage that got us through in the second half I think.” Meanwhile, Manchester City’s manager Roberto
Mancini has admitted that his team’s defence of their Premier League title is over. Mancini famously wrote off his side’s chances towards the end of last season, before a goal in the last seconds of the final game against Queens Park Rangers by Sergio Aguero snatched the title from United’s grasp. But this time he is adamant: “It is definite this time. It is over. We are disappointed that we can’t win the title
but United have been better than us.” However, Mancini insisted that there will be no let-up from his players, with London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur both in a position to claim the runners-up spot should City take their foot off the pedal. “It is over but it doesn’t change anything because we have to do our best to the end,” Mancini said. “We know that in football it is difficult to win the title for
the second year. But we still have the FA Cup and can get second position.” Mancini, whose side begin the last leg of a frustrating season against Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, gave no interviews after the defeat by Everton that ended the slim hopes of a recovery in the title race. He admitted: “I didn’t want to say any bad things. I was disappointed, I was really upset.” AFP
