MOTION B20 ‘BAHT BUS’ IN PHUKET TOWN MOVES AHEAD

The route and the minimum and maximum fares have yet to be settled, but drivers are paying out of their own pockets to get their vehicles ready Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

T

HE move to create a tuk-tuk driven “baht bus” for fares as cheap as B20 in Phuket Town surged ahead this week as Phuket Land Transport officials confirmed that the project had been well received by the Public Transport Cooperative Club (PTCC). “We have not yet received written

confirmation that the drivers agree to all terms, but verbal feedback from the drivers has been very good,” said Somsak Potneungnong, an administration official at the Phuket Land Transportation Office (PLTO). “Also, some of them have already had their tuk-tuks repainted in red and yellow, as required under the project,” he added. The move to create a “baht bus”, similar to the service that has

become famous in Pattaya, follows 87 illegal drivers, all members of the PTCC, being turfed off their patch at the main bus terminal on Thepkrasattri Road. In resolving the ensuing mob action, Phuket Gover nor Nisit Jansomwong called on the PLTO to draw up plans to bring the illegal drivers into the fold and provide a valuable service to commuters in Phuket Town.

However, the route and the minimum fares have yet to be agreed to, Mr Somsak noted. “But the fares could be as cheap as B20,” he told The Phuket News this week. Mr Somsak added that the original requirement still stands that the tuk-tuk drivers will not be permitted to deliver or pick up passengers to or from areas outside of Phuket Town.

Sightless search continues

No migrant boats found adrift offshore, says Phuket Navy chief Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

T

he seven warships and accompanying aircraft deployed to assist migrants in distress have yet to find any refugee boats off the west coast of Phuket, the head of the Royal Thai Navy’s Third Area Command told The Phuket News on Tuesday (June 2). The ships and search-andrescue patrol aircraft were deployed last Friday (May 29). Among them was the HTMS Angthong, a landing platform dock ship that is acting as a floating hospital and has been provisioned with more than 10,000 packages of instant noodles, 10,000 bottles of water and 5,000 cans of fish. In addition to the seven boats, four naval aircraft were deployed.

The HTMS Angthong awaiting action near the Surin Islands. “We have yet to find any boats full of Rohingya, but we will continue searching the ocean, especially the area around the Surin Islands,” said Vice-Admiral Sayan Prasongsamrej. Migrant boats in transit to Thai waters may be hampered by the current monsoon weather, he noted. “The current monsoon brings hard rain and wind to the ocean, and it is a long way – about 795 nautical

miles – from Rakhine state in Myanmar to Thailand,” V/ Adm Sayan said. “They could still be out there, and we will keep looking,” he added. The Navy has been been ordered to continue their search and render any humanitarian assistance needed until June 12. “After then, we are to receive new orders whether or not to continue our searchand-assist efforts,” V/Adm Sayan said.

Phuket ‘baht bus’ in motion Continued from page 1 “The exact rules have not been laid down, but once agreement has been reached, we will inform Phuket City Police to allow these drivers to provide the service,” he said. “We hope to reach agreement sometime this month,” he said. PTCC President Daroon Suksai told The Phuket News on Wednesday that his drivers, in principle, were willing to step up and provide the service – but said that “speed bumps” in getting the drivers and tuktuks ready may delay the full

service from hitting the streets as quickly as many hope for. “We are not ready to drive yet. All the tuk-tuks must be Suzukis [converted Carry models], which means some drivers have to sell their current tuk-tuks and refinance loans to buy new cars,” Mr Daroon said. “This is causing financial difficulties for some drivers, but we are in talks with banks to see what can be done about this to make it easier for them.” The club currently has only 10 vehicles ready to provide the service, Mr Daroon noted. “Also, all drivers must be

legally registered with the PLTO and be issued the appropriate licenses and permits in order to provide the service. This is still being done,” he said. Mr Daroon remains apprehensive about what the final terms offered will be, but remains positive the outcome will benefit everyone. “I hope that we get a fair offer to drive in Phuket. If we don’t, some drivers might back out of the deal,” he said. “But I personally would like to see Phuket have a good public transport service.”

Patong Police Station was flooded by heavy rain again.

Flash floods hit Patong A HEAVY DOWNPOUR caused minor flash floods in Patong last Saturday (May 30), with floodwaters reaching up to 50 centimetres in some areas. A deluge at about 1pm caused roads to be overrun with water, leaving motorists stranded or cut off temporarily as the drains failed to carry away the runoff from inside the west-coast resort town. The rising f loodwaters were compounded by runoff from the hills that encircle the east side of Patong.

Kathu Police station again suffered flooding, with the car park inundated. In August last year, the station suffered minor flood damage several times as heavy rains fell upon the town. The major roads in Patong cleared as the hours passed and the waters subsided, and traffic began to flow normally throughout the town. The Southwest Meteorological Centre in Phuket forecasts more thundershowers this week, with a warning that more minor flash floods may occur. Eakkapop Thongtub

he World Bungee Jump in Patong, where a Kuwaiti tourist died last week, has been ordered closed until further notice. The order came from Patong Mayor Chalermluk Kebsap following an inspection of the bungee jump site on May 28, the day after 25-year-old Abdullah Adel Kadhbahman fell from the bungee jump and later died at Patong Hospital. It is believed that Mr Kadhmbahman died because the bungee cord ropes attached to his ankles either slipped off or broke whilst he was rebounding from his jump, causing him to fall and hit the ground surrounding a lake where the jump is located. Mayor Chalermluk ordered officials to inspect all equipment at the facility and ensure that the facility meets new laws and regulations on bungee jumps which will

A man reported to be the owner of World Bungee Jump, Weenas Janwibolkul, took officials around the facility and also showed them the place where Mr Kadhbahman hit the ground. He told officials that he did not witness the incident but felt very sorry for the victim and his family. “We will take full responsibility. We have taken care of all medical expenses and are waiting to hear from the victim’s family to see what else we can do. “We have been open for

13 years and this is the first time we have had to deal with a fatal accident. We have had some small accidents previously which have resulted in minor injuries. But safety is our priority here, and before each jump we check all equipment for safety,” he said. A member of staff who witnessed the incident, Manu Nilmin, said that before each jump staff always check the equipment. He also said that the equipment is replaced every three to four months. “The incident happened when the victim plunged the second time. He was at

a height of about 30 metres when the ankle straps came off. We don’t know how it happened,” said Mr Manu. Kathu District Chief Sayan Chanachaiyawong, who joined Ms Chalermluk in inspecting the bungee site, said that everybody was sorry for the family of the deceased. However, he added that there are currently no laws or regulations covering bungee jumps and that building regulations have been used as a guide for setting up bungee jumps which fall under the jurisdiction of the local tambon. That will change when the new regulations come into force in June. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Kathu, Chaianan Sutthikul, has denied rumours that he is the real owner of the bungee jump. After the accident people were seen at the bungee facility wearing T-shirts with his name on them. He said they were employees of the Sainamyen Boxing Stadium, which is next door.

odie Poyner of the UK has made a public plea for any information that may lead to finding her father, Graham Poyner, a Phuket expat last seen on March 25. Mr Poyner, who has a home in Patong, was reportedly last seen by his wife in Surin Province, on the Cambodian border in northeast Thailand, Jodie explained. The couple have a second home there. He left the house with four men to go on a golfing trip and was due to return on March 27, which would have been his 57th birthday. “His phone has been off since, and his moped was found several days later in the local town with the number plate missing,” she told The Phuket News. The motorbike was found near the Saeng Thong Hotel in Surin Town, with the key still in the ignition. But none of the local people questioned by police recalled seeing Graham in the area. Jodie was in touch with her father frequently before his disappearance. When he failed to get in touch on his birthday and had not returned to his home in Surin, she became very worried and on April 3 had a friend post a video on YouTube appealing for any information that

olice have arrested five men for the slaying of a man in a street stabbing in Phuket Town in the early hours of last Sunday (May 31). Sayomphu Guamsup, 21, died in hospital after he was stabbed three times in an attack on Surin Road after an altercation at the nearby “At Time Bar”. It is understood that Mr Sayomphu was with a group of friends enjoying themselves at the venue when they became entangled in a spat with a group at another table, which escalated as the men left the establishment. By the time rescue workers had arrived to the scene of the fight at about 1:45am – in front of popular clothing shops on Surin Rd in Talad Yai – the suspects had already fled. Sompong Boonrak, also 21, was also stabbed in the attack, but survived. Apparently Mr Sompong was not involved in the street fight, but just a bystander at the bar. Police told The Phuket

Somkid Jandawong, 23, died after being stabbed at a khao tom (rice soup) stall in Soi Paradise, Patong. News that the gang of five were tracked down to their rented house in Koh Kaew after reviewing CCTV footage. Anon Ketkeaw, 22, was charged with attempted murder, and Ritchot Raksasap, 21, was charged for operating the getaway motorbike. Triront Seaaor, 24, was charged for starting the fight and Aphichai Siriwatrakit, 24, and Anan Boonroong, 25, were charged with joining the affray. All five confessed to the charges against them. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old has confessed to fatally stabbing a man in a drunken brawl in Patong early Monday morning (June 1).

The minor, called “Pat” by police, surrendered at Kathu police station on Tuesday (June 2) after his mother convinced him to give himself up. Officers were called to Soi Paradise, off Rat U-Thit 200 Pi Road, at 3:45am on Monday, where they found Somkid Jandawong, 23, from Amnat Charoen province, dead. He had been stabbed in the torso four times. Officers found on the ground nearby a two-inch blade that had broken off from a knife. Witnesses told police that they saw three men brawl with a lone diner at a khao tom (rice soup) shop in the street. During the fight, one man

stabbed Mr Somkid repeatedly, then escaped on a motorbike driven by a woman, they said. Officers checked CCTV footage from cameras in the area, and just after midnight on Tuesday arrested Supan Legnok, 27, and Sooksan Srikaew, 22, on Soi Sainamyen. Both were charged for being accomplices to murder and carrying weapons in public. Both denied the charges. Soon after, police arrived Pat’s home, where officers convinced his mother to have her son give himself up. Pat, accompanied by his mother, surrendered at Kathu Police Station just hours later and confessed to stabbing Somkid. “I went with Supan and Sooksan to eat khao tom at the restaurant and Somkid started talking nonsense to us,” Pat told police. “He upset me when he starting cursing my mother, so I hit him. We fought, and when he fell on the ground I stabbed him four times,” he confessed. Police have yet to confirm what charges will be pressed against Pat.

Robbery, attempted murder in Ratchaburi, arrested in Phuket A POLICE R AID ON A hotel room in Phuket Town last weekend snared a husbandand-wife couple wanted for robbery and attempted murder in Ratchaburi only six days earlier. Chuwnpit Tongleg, 28, and her husband Anuwat Yensiri were arrested at the Rattana Mansion Hotel on Chana Charoen Road on May 29. In her statement to police, Chuwnpit confessed that she, Anuwat and two friends attacked and robbed a man, Mr Prasert Thewarit, in Ratchaburi on May 23. Chuwnpit said she tricked the victim, named only as “Mr Prasert”, by leading him to an isolated area in Wangyen district, where Anuwat and the

other two suspects ambushed him. The gang robbed and assaulted Mr Prasert before taking his gold necklaces and other items. In the hotel room in Phuket, police found the couple in possession of gold items, includuing necklaces, bracelets, rings and amulets, and a large stack of B1,000 banknotes. Police also seized a leather bag, a red jewelry pouch and and a notebook marking the sale of other gold items – and a camera and tickets to Phuket Zoo. ast weekend, Phuket played host to the Phuket International Rugby 10s for the 17th year running. The tourney, won by the local Phuket Vagabonds team for the first time in history, saw more than 20 teams from across the Asia-Pacific region compete, something for which the organisers should be very proud. (See full report on page 40) This Sunday (May 7) the island will also play host to the 10th Laguna Phuket International Marathon, an event which each and every year draws thousands of athletes from around the world. At least 7,000 are expected on Sunday. These regular major sporting events have long played the role of forerunners to other major sporting competitions brought to the island, now touted and promoted by government agencies after finally

realising the benefits to be had through developing this form of tourism. Last year, Phuket was the chosen venue for the fourth Asian Beach Games, a fantastic sporting event where between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes from 45 nations competed in 26 sports at six different beach locations over nine days. The event was described by many who attended as “an outstanding success”, and even led to calls for the island to be the selected venue for a World Beach Games. Events such as those already mentioned not only take a long time to organise, it also takes a lot of work to ensure they run smoothly and successfully, and all those involved should be credited for all their hard work ensuring that they do so. These events draw vast amou nts of people who spend money and bring a large amount of revenue. The

Asian Beach Games generated more than B2.5 billion for the province, estimated Kriengsak Suksomboon, chairman of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce. His estimate was based on the conservative guess that each athlete, official and visitor supporting the event spent a meagre B5,000 each. While the number of the foreign tourists visiting Phuket has dropped in recent months, events such as the Rugby 10s, the Laguna Marathon and the Asian Beach Games bolster the industry by providing another reason for tourists to come to Phuket, and to return time and again. Thailand and Phuket should focus more on bringing sporting events to the island so that tourists continue to come to the province, and it has already been proved that we can host such events with the maximum of success.

HAVE YOUR SAY Helmets are a ‘no brainer’ literally Re: Helmetless motorbike driver dead after collision with pickup truck No wonder, sadly another brainless ignorant kamikaze driver gone. Seen every day on Phuket roads – motorbike drivers not wearing a helmet or just putting it on when they approach a possible police checkpoint, and after passing by taking it off again. Even worse, seen daily are ignorant lazy motorbike drivers and motorbike sidecar drivers, approaching on the wrong side of the road, who are too lazy to drive correctly, to the next u-turn. Concerned It is very sad as any death is especially when it might well have been preventable? The graphic remarks in the article might just help save a life. Well reported Phuket News! Bjay Unfortunately, 99 per cent of the helmets worn in Phuket are pretty much worthless in any accident with anything more than a minor head impact. They’ll prevent abrasions, but, not much else. That’s why they’re called “brain buckets.” In America,

an inexpensive helmet that can offer protection starts at $100 (B$3200). These are not available here. Foot

The ‘Organic Phuket’ dialogue Re: Verdant vistas vision for Phuket Dear Chef Barry, I can’t understand the basis of your remarks “organic gardening and agriculture are hard to come by in Thailand, never mind Phuket” ... 1) All major organic certification agencies are represented here in Thailand with hundreds, if not thousands of organic farms registered individually or as part of a cooperative. With hundreds of companies in Thailand being active in organic food trade. 2) Hard to come by on Phuket? All major supermarkets on Phuket sell organic vegetables, fruits, herbs and other produce. Pura Organic Foods Ltd has a large assortment which it sells in its shop in Cherngtalay. It really is not hard to come by as you state and you know it, don’t understand the reason of your remarks. 3) I applaud your idea of trying to make Phuket an organic island again but please remember that it takes at least 3

to 5 years of organic soil treatment to get rid of the present available chemicals (mostly used in present production methods in rubber and pineapples), but a start should be made now. Calling something organic simply because no chemicals fertiliser, herbicides or pesticides were used is not sufficient. Soil needs to be improved because only in healthy soil healthy vegetables will grow. 4) Even making your own compost, although a great idea and advisable, if made with non organic materials is not the right choice (you can’t throw even a little bit of diesel into a gasoline driven car). If an animal eats non organic feed its products, be it eggs, milk or its meat can not be called organic. Perhaps you could be a little more careful before making these grand remarks in your articles? Martin Pura Organic Foods Ltd., Phuket Dear Martin, We have a very serious supply and demand [shortage] for organic foods available at the current retail food stores, which can give only zero to 4 per cent labelled [certified] organic produce on any given day, I for one, and many other expats living in

Phuket have a real problem with this. In fact I myself am forced to grow my own foods now because of this disaster food supply situation that we currently live under. Most of Thai organic foods are earmarked for export any way. And many Thai organic farmers that talk to me say that presently they need more government support and private support as well. Monsanto is currently giving away their terminator seeds freely away to farmers in the Kingdom, so what do you say about this? If you would just read all of the environmental articles on “The Phuket News” then you would know what I am talking about Martin. Thank you for your comments. Kindest Holistic Chef Barry Anderson

Is this an end to ‘unofficial fees’ charged by officials? Tippaya Moonmanee Tax & Law Expert Duensing Kippen

new law, due to come into force in July, could mean an end to demands by officials for “unofficial fees” to issue permits, licenses or registration documents. Historically, obtaining a license, registration, permit or any other form of government permission has often been frustrating and costly in Thailand. Thai government enacted a law that may significantly reduce, or even eliminate, such waste and untoward practices. The Licensing Facilitation Act (2015) was formally published on January 22 this year and will take effect on July 21. With a few notable exceptions (they include court procedures and licensing related to strategic military operations), the act applies to all licenses, registrations, and permissions that Thai law requires or allows individuals to obtain. It also applies to the government offices charged with issuing these documents. Furthermore, the act requires that all government offices involved must produce, and make available to the public, a manual that details the procedure, timing, and specific requirements in order to obtain the licenses, registrations, or permissions that they administer. This includes lists of all

Rohingya riot sparks security crackdown A

lmost 100 Rohingya migrants held at a detention centre in Muang district of Surat Thani on Monday night (June 1) broke windows in a protest against regulations, prompting a beef-up in security. Surat Thani police chief Apichart Boonsriroj said crowd control officers will be deployed as a precaution because most of the staff at the detention centre are not trained to handle hazardous situations. A total of 94 Rohingya migrants, women and children, are being held at the centre which is a regional occupation-training centre, known as the Sri Surat Home. Pol Maj Gen Apichart said the migrants seemed upset after they were not allowed to bring food and other belongings to their living quarters to celebrate the Laylat al Baraat holiday, or Barat Night, one of the holiest nights in the Islamic year. It is considered a night of forgiveness and repentence. Surat Thani deputy governor Wichawut Jinto and

Authorities moved in to search and segregate Rohingya sheltering at a Surat Thani location after the boat people staged and riot and made resettlement demands. (Post Today photos) Pol Maj Gen Apichart went to the centre with 50 police officers. Five Rohingya protest leaders were taken for questioning and informed of the detention centre’s regulations. Barbed wire was placed around the building and more lighting installed. On Tuesday (June 2), Pol Maj Gen Apichart led more than 80 crowd control officers and local administrators to the centre and searched the sleeping quarters. Several plastic bags containing small

stones and some dried food were found. Officials also said the Rohingya migrants also demanded they be resettled in Malaysia and not the United States. According to Pol Maj Gen Apichart said 35 of the detainees are recognised as victims of human trafficking. The rest are considered to be illegal migrants. Sudarat Pansawat, director of the Sri Surat Home, said police and local administrators will step up security to

prevent a recurrence of the violence. “We are limited to providing assistance to the migrants. We can do nothing about their demands to be resettled in a third country. It depends on government policy,” she said. Meanwhile, National Security Council (NSC) secretarygeneral Anusit Khunakorn said there would be a “surprise” in the outcome of the government’s handling of the Rohingya migrant problem. He said the government’s commitment to solving the problem would enable state authorities to tackle the issue more efficiently. Mr Anusit said the Asean Economic Community could bring good news for the Rohingya, as member countries are likely to cooperate in finding a solution. Asked about pressure on Thailand to do more, the NSC chief said each country has its own interests to protect, but eventually will realise it should work together with others to tackle the problem. Panel strip Thaksin of his police rank A POLICE COMMITTEE Tuesday (June 2) voted to strip former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra of his police rank. The panel chaired by Pol Gen Chaiya Siri-ampankul, an adviser to the Royal Thai Police, agreed 5-0 to remove Thaksin's of lieutenant colonel rank. The panel last week said there was clear evidence Thaksin is a criminal fugitive, one of the six criteria needed to strip a former police officer of his rank. Pol Gen Chaiya said the committee's findings along with supporting legal explanations were sent Wednesday (June 3) to national police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang, who will consider and formally approve its decision before

forwarding it to Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon. Pol Gen Chaiya said the decision was based on legal evidence and the panel had no bias and were not worried about Thaksin supporters coming to power again because they had done their work in a straightforward manner. The move came after the Foreign Ministry decided on May 26 to revoke Thaksin's two Thai ordinary passports over his press interview in Seoul on May 20 in which he claimed the privy councillors supported the 2014 coup that ousted his sister Yingluck's government. The police force is considering whether Thaksin's May 20 comments violated the les majeste law.

Mers hits S. Korea M

ore than 680 people in South Korea have been placed in isolation after having contact with those infected with a virus that has killed hundreds of people in the Middle East, authorities said Monday (June 1). The Health Ministry said three more people have tested positive for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers), bringing the total number infected with the disease in the country to 18. Ministry officials said 682 people who had close contact with the patients, such as their family members and their medical staff, were isolated at their homes or state-run facilities. The virus in South Korea has been largely limited to medical staff who treated the first patient and who stayed at the same hospital with him, as well as his family members. Authorities are considering a ban on overseas travel for the nearly 700 people isolated for possible infection after a 44-year-old man broke a voluntary house quarantine last week and flew to Hong Kong and then travelled to mainland China. The man subsequently test-

All 18 cases have been linked to a 68-year-old man – who returned from Bahrain via Qatar on May 20 – who were either patients or visitors to the hospital where he was being treated. First identified in humans in 2012, Mers is caused by a

coronavirus from the same family as the one that triggered China’s deadly 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars). There is no cure or vaccine. The World Health Organisation put the total number of cases globally at 1,150 with at least 427 related deaths. It said last week there had been no sustained human-tohuman spread and that it was not recommending screening of passengers or that travel or

Beijing bans indoor smoking THE TOUGHEST ANTIsmoking legislation in China’s history came into effect on Monday (June 1) in Beijing, with unprecedented fines and a hotline to report offenders following fears of weak enforcement. The law makes smoking in offices, restaurants, hotels and hospitals illegal, with venues where the ban is flouted liable to fines of up to 10,000 yuan (B54,000). Venues which repeatedly ignore the law could have their licenses revoked, while individuals caught smoking in

schools, hospitals, and sports venues. Despite a government awareness campaign many say it will be difficult to implement. trade restrictions be imposed on South Korea. In South Korea, one elderly patient who had a history of kidney ailment was in a serious condition, with weak vital signs requiring him to be on cardiac and respiratory support, the head of the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases, Kim Woo-joo, told a briefing. “I’ve been asking myself whether there may be a genetic factor, if anything makes (Koreans) more vulnerable, but so far there’s no evidence,” said Dr Kim, who is advising the Health Ministry on the outbreak. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control put South Korea’s 18 cases the fourth highest number of confirmed cases, after Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Public-health authorities faced more criticism on Monday for failing to contain the spread of the virus after the initial case whose symptoms were first overlooked. “We must find the reason for the high rate of transmission unlike in the cases of other countries,” President Park Geun-hye told a meeting on Monday. Corpse left in suitcase at Tokyo station for a month THE CORPSE OF A WOMan that had been stuffed in a suitcase and left in a locker at one of the world’s busiest train stations went undiscovered for a month, Japanese police said Monday (June 1). The suitcase was abandoned in a locker at Tokyo Station in late April, but was moved to the left-luggage room after no-one collected it, media reported. When a month past without its being claimed, the baggage storage company opened it. “There was an abnormal odour when we opened the suitcase,” a spokesman told reporters. “Then we saw hair.” The decomposing body belonged to a woman aged between 70 and 90, who was about 140 centimetres tall,

police said. She had been folded into the suitcase, which measured 70 centimetres by 50 centimetres, local media reported. None of the people who worked in the office next to the baggage storage room had noticed any unpleasant smells, the Sponichi tabloid said. Police said they had no leads on the woman’s identity, but were investigating cause of death and examining CCTV footage from around the station. Tokyo Station is one of the busiest in Japan, handling around 150 million passengers a year, operator JR East said. It is the terminus for a number of Shinkansen bullet train lines, and is the connection point for many suburban and subway routes. AFP

Violence faced by Latinos

Brutal murders show violence faced by Latin American women

O

ne woman was beaten to death because she got pregnant. Another was stabbed to death in a jealous rage. Another had her throat slit because she asked for a divorce. These brutal murders show the alarming violence that women face in Latin America, a region that has begun adopting new laws to address the problem, but where thousands are killed by their partners each year. Statistics are incomplete and inconsistently kept across the region. But where they are available, they are startling: Domestic violence kills nearly one woman a day in Argentina, more than five a day in Mexico and 15 a day in Brazil, for example. The issue has surged to the surface in Argentina, where a recent series of gruesome killings has raised new alarm. One of the victims was Maria Eugenia Lanzetti, a 44-year-old kindergarten teacher in the central province of Cordoba who was separated from her obsessive husband and had a restraining order against him, as well as a panic button on her cell phone. That did not stop him from bursting into her classroom on

More than 15 women a day are killed by their partner in cases of domestic violence in Brazil. April 15 and slitting her throat in front of her students. The country was also shocked by the case of a 14-year-old girl whose boyfriend is accused of beating her to death and burying her after learning she was pregnant. Outraged Argentines called a march on Wednesday (June 4) to condemn violence against women, which has killed more than 1,800 in the past seven years, according to women’s rights group La Casa del Encuentro. Marches will also be held in

neighboring Chile and Uruguay. But underlining the persistence of the problem, less than 48 hours before the march a man violating his restraining order shot his expartner in the back with a shotgun in the Argentine city of Santa Rosa, leaving her in serious condition. These macabre crimes reflect “a society that is sick with machista attitudes where the woman continues to be seen as a thing to be dominated,” said Fabiana Tunez, the head of La Casa del Encuentro. “The government shows up

too late to stop it. In Argentina, a woman is still dying every 31 hours.”

- ‘Legislation not enough’ The problem persists despite a 2012 law in Argentina setting down harsher sentences for “femicide” – the killing of a woman by a man when gender plays a part in the crime. Fifteen other Latin American countries have also written it into their penal codes.

But activists say the impact of the laws is limited. “From 2012 to 2013 we documented 3,892 women murdered nationwide. Of these homicides, just 613 were investigated as femicides,” said Maria de la Luz Estrada of Mexican activist group the National Citizens’ Femicide Observatory. She said 17 of Mexico’s 31 states had defined the crime in ways that were “very difficult to justify,” so that police typically opted for the easier-to-prove, lesser charge of homicide. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, the country’s first female president, urged women not to accept domestic violence as “inevitable” as she signed a bill into law last March establishing femicide as a crime. But speaking out remains difficult for victims. In Chile, where 16 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners so far this year, Women’s Minister Claudia Pascual has condemned laws that allow third parties to report domestic violence to the police but “require the woman who has been the victim to ratify the charges.” Laws alone will not solve the problem, said Gabriela Alegre, an Argentine lawmaker. FIFA aide transferred $10 million, report SEPP BLATTER’S TOP lieutenant Jerome Valcke made $10 million in bank transactions to an account controlled by another high level football official, The New York Times reported on Monday (June 1). US federal authorities said the alleged transfer of millions in 2008 to accounts controlled by former vice-president Jack Warner are key elements of the ongoing corruption scandal that has engulfed football’s governing body. The newspaper, citing several unnamed law en-

forcement officials, said the payments are a crucial part of last week’s indictment against 14 football officials and marketing executives by US and Swiss authorities and shows the bribery trail is closer to President Blatter than previously known. US prosecutors have accused Warner of taking a bribe in exchange for helping South Africa secure the right to host the 2010 World Cup tournament. No charges have been filed against secretary general

Valcke and he has not been accused of any wrongdoing or named in the indictment. But Times says its sources told them that he is the unidentified “high-ranking official” who allegedly transferred the funds to Warner. Valcke denied authorising the payment and said he doesn’t have the power to do so in an email to the newspaper. According to the indictment, the $10 million payment was made in three wire transfers between January and March 2008.

FIFA announced Monday that Valcke would not attend next week’s opening of the Women’s World Cup as planned in Canada because of the scandal. Two separate investigations are being carried out by American and Swiss authorities for alleged rampant and long-running corruption within several top officials arrested in dawn raids in Zurich last week and accused by US investigators of taking tens of millions of dollars in bribes. They were all detained

CHINA HAS CALLED ON THAI authorities to provide better protection for its tourists visiting islands in Surat Thani province. Chinese consul general in Songkhla province Zhang Jinxiong held talks on improved protection with Surat Thani authorities led by provincial governor Chatpong Chatphuti last Friday (May 29) following complaints by visitors

from China. A key problem identified by the Chinese diplomat involved tourists from China being forced to pay excessively high costs for damage to rented motorcycles and jet skis on Samui, Pha-ngan and Tao islands. The three islands are popular with tourists from China. Mr Chatpong said authorities will take action against all service providers

unfairly taking advantage of foreign tourists and crack down on crime that affects confidence in the tourism sector in the province. More than 50,000 tourists from China visit the southern province each year. About 4.6 million tourists from China came to Thailand last year and 1 million more are targeted for this year. German aged targeted for tourism boon THE THAI MINISTRY OF Commerce will soon focus on senior German travellers, after surveys indicated growth potential for the demographic. Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) Director-General Nantawan Sakuntanaga quoted reports from the International Trade Promotion Office in Frankfurt, Germany, which indicated the country has the second highest number of senior citizens in the world, after Japan. The report said Germany currently has 17 million senior citizens, adding that the number would jump to 24 million by 2035. Ms Nantawan said her agency would hold an event promoting Thai products in order to tap into the market. Ms Sujitra Tanomsup, Director of the Commercial Section, Royal Thai ConsulateGeneral in Frankfurt, stated that the majority of Germans over 50 prefer products with exceptional design, as well as health-related products, cosmetics, ornaments and various massage services. However, she stressed that marketing for these products should be subtle and avoid emphasizing their target demographic. NNT

Smartphones’ expanding role in IoT CONNECTED LIFE Dana Blouin DTBlouin@yahoo.com

WHEN WE THINK ABOUT the Internet of Things it’s very easy to associate that with connected sensors that we use for that specific purpose, temperature sensor in the smart home or an accelerometer in a fitness tracker. When we think about how we interact with the Internet of Things we might think of using the web an app on our smartphone; but rarely do we think of our phones as the sensor node – most of the time it’s our gateway for other sensors or a control device. In reality the smartphone offers just about everything

we could possibly need to act as a sensor node in many cases. I actually moved away from wearing a Jawbone Up fitness tracker because I was able to find an app that took advantage of the accelerometers in my iPhone to do the same exact thing. And, it did it better with less hassle as I no longer need to charge a separate device and then sync the data to my phone to have access to it. Our phones are packed to the brim with sensors and more than enough computing power to boot. Granted battery life and durability have been consistent issues over time with smartphones, but their ability to pull data from the world around us has been on a consistent rise. It is now easy enough to replace a lot of wearable tech

by adding a simple application to our smartphone so it can take over that function with hardware it already has built in, no need to adorn ourselves with something new. While the smartphone might not be the be-all-endall of sensor nodes, it does a pretty good job for a lot of things. It’s packed with numerous sensors, had various ways to connect back to the Internet, and for the most part with almost always have it on us. The Internet of Things is the future and the smartphone is going to be a very big part of it. Until next time, stay connected. Early start for future leaders BISP’s newest Head Boys, Girls on student government Dalia Hilmi editor1@classactmedia.co.th

E

ver wondered how a student is chosen to be the Head Boy or Head Girl of a school? Most schools in the commonwealth, and various international schools, have a student council where the Head Students act as the main link between the teachers and the pupils. Applying for the position of Head Boy or Head Girl comes with great responsibility. It is an achievement which stays with the students for a life time. They are responsible for representing the school at events, lead fellow prefects in their duties, as well as create that all important link between the teachers and pupils. The application process sometimes involves giving speeches to the rest of the school, auditions or sometimes even a chain of interviews. At The British International School, Phuket (BISP), the application process isn’t too different. Students are required to write an application letter explaining why they should be considered, how their qualities fit the role, their weaknesses and their leadership styles. In short, they had to sell themselves.

Nicolas Varnier, Fransiska Greene, Archie Plunkett, and Natchongrat ‘Oy’ Terdkiatkhachorn. Seven boys and nine girls applied for the positions at BISP. Each were interviewed, and the whole process took a month. From the applicants, two were chosen for the position of Head Boy and Head Girl, and two more as as deputy heads. Students Fransiska Greene and Nicolas Varnier were chosen as Head Girl and Head Boy, and the deputy positions were filled by Natchongrat ‘Oy’ Terdkiatkhachorn and Archie Plunkett. The Phuket News recently sat down

with these four lucky students to find out more about their roles and responsibility.. Nicolas Varnier, Head Boy, said, “Honestly, I was really surprised. I didn’t actually expect to be chosen. “It’s great though, because we are like a bridge between the higher part of the school and the students. We are the voice of the student school.” Archie Plunkett, Deputy Head Boy said, “We aim to try and make it [the school] a better place.”

“We want to try and make it enjoyable for everyone,” Oy, Deputy Head Girl, explained. “Every week, we meet with the student council. We discuss anything from adding more benches outside, to more snacks in the common room, to providing long-term help for Nepal,” Archie added. “We want to raise enough money to help build a school, so for anyone that had an education before will be able to have one again and suffer no more,” Oy said. Fransiska Greene, Head Girl said, “The idea is to create an ongoing relationship for the future, so we can keep on helping.” “We want to encourage a greater relationship and better community,” added Nicolas. The students have proved their determination and genuine care towards helping others, not just within the school but within the local community as well. Their positions here at the school will indeed give them great personal experiences, and their futures are already looking bright. From careers in economics, to hospitality, to PR, to volunteering around Asia, no matter which path they choose, the students will no doubt succeed in whatever they do.

Yoga for the sole Kim White kim@mindbodyyogasystem.com

Besides directly working the bottoms of the feet, this posture also focuses on opening the calves, another extremely important factor in treatment of shin splints.

FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 2015

H

ello and welcome to June! June 1st was Vesak day, a day that commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha. When visiting a temple or paying homage to the triple gem there is a traditional sitting etiquette to follow. Our yoga asana this month closely resembles one of these polite ways to sit and honour the achievements of the Buddha. I thought it fitting that we focus on padazakatanasana this month, also known as toe stretch pose. A very regal posture with an important job, and this leads me to my second inspiration this month, soothing the sole. Yes that’s right this month’s asana is literally a soul to sole experience! The plantar fascia is the thick connective tissue which supports the arch on the bottom of the foot. It runs from the heel bone forward to the heads of the bones between each toe and the bones of the mid foot. It has a very important function of supporting the soles of the feet and sometimes this area becomes injured from poor footwear, heaving jumping or excess running. It is also commonly diagnosed in individuals with poor foot biomechanics that stress the plantar fascia. Flat feet or weak foot arch control muscles are two common causes of plantar fasciitis. I have seen this injury quite a lot over the last few months. Padazakatanasana is the answer to this problem. Besides directly working the bottoms of the feet, this posture also focuses on opening the calves, another extremely important factor in treatment of plantar fasciitis and shin splints. The tendons of the deep muscles of the calf wrap around and under the foot so extra tension or overuse of those muscles can put extra stress on the bot-

Padazakatanasana can address plantar fasciitis injuries. tom of the foot. This asana is so simple to perform, but if you have not paid your feet much attention before, I am not going to lie, you will feel this stretch! I like to think of the awesome benefit this pose is doing to soothe your soles and as you politely sit in padazakatanasana, you can also contemplate the ways of Buddha, for your soul. Here is how we perform the toe stretch pose: 1. Sit in a kneeling position with the toes curled under and heels together. 2. Sit your bottom onto your heels

with your shoulders stack on top of the hips. 3. Let more and more body weight settle onto the heels as time passes. It may be very difficult at first, but try to work your way up to holding this for two and a half to three minutes. 4. Breathe steadily, visualising the bottoms of the feet getting soft and gaining length. Soothing yourself from sole to soul. Happy stretching! See you next month. Metta, Kim, oxo

A local pumpkin

delight Something for the sweet tooth on a rainy day SIRINYA’S WORLD Dr Sirinya Pakditawan pakditawan@googlemail.com

In fact, due to Portuguese influence in the 1600s, eggs were added to Thai sweets.

T

hai pumpkin custard (Sankaya, สังขยา) is a popular Thai dessert which is often sold in fresh-food markets and as street food. To prepare this dessert, we stuff a whole pumpkin or kabocha (Asian winter squash) with a sweet coconut milk and egg custard which is then steamed. This is a very beautiful and aesthetic dessert with balanced textures which also show the influence of the Portuguese on Thai food. In fact, due to Portuguese influence in the 1600s, eggs were added to Thai desserts and sweets. In Thai, this dessert is also called ‘Sankaya Fak Thong’, ‘Fak Thong’ referring to ‘golden squash’ (ฟ กั ทอง). This dessert is also known in Cambodia where it is called ‘Sankhya lapov’. The Khmer word for pumpkin is ‘lapov’.

Ingredients for 4-5 portions:

1 pumpkin (400-600g) 4 eggs 200ml coconut milk 300g palm sugar 2 TSP rice flour 1/s TSP salt 1000ml limewater 3-4 pandan leaves or pandanus flavour

Preparation:

First prepare the pumpkin: wash it and cut out the top, then remove all the seeds and stringy insides from the pumpkin. In the next step, soak the pumpkin in 1 litre of limewater for 20-30 minutes. Then prepare the custard: put the four eggs in a large mixing bowl, add salt, coconut milk, rice flour and palm sugar. Add also your pandan leaves or pandanus flavour and mix everything well by hand. It is important that the palm sugar is completely dissolved. Then stain the mixture with cheesecloth and afterwards fill your pumpkin with this custard mixture and put it in a steamer with boiling water. That is to say, place the pumpkin inside the steamer basket and steam for about 40-45 minutes. Finally take the pumpkin out, let it cool down and you’re ready to serve! Your pumpkin is now like a pie, simply cut a piece out. This recipe for steamed pumpkin custard comes from the marvellous cooking channel WhatRecipe.

Graduates of the world

B

ritish International School, Phuket (BISP) has reached a graduating milestone at this year’s IB Graduation Ceremony, which was held on May 29. From its first graduation class in 2001, and including the Class of 2015, the school has now graduated 500 students, with the vast majority proceeding directly to universities located around the world. The 500 th student to graduate from BISP was Roxanne Yu. A Philippine national swimmer, she is a hopeful for the Rio 2016 Olympics, and has already represented her country at the 2014 World Cup in Singapore; Youth Olympic Games, Nanjing; SEA Games; and World Championships, Doha 2014; breaking several national records along the way. Altogether, this year’s graduating class is composed of 19 different nationalities, drawing from a truly diverse whole school student body – from pre-school to IB – of more than 60 nationalities. Headmaster Neil Richards acknowledges that this is quite an achievement for the school in its relatively short history, and he is delighted to be a part of the school’s proud tradition, but he believes that schools must constantly evolve and that the best is yet to come. “BISP cannot rest on past success, and although this is a good indicator that the school knows exactly what it is doing, there are always ways to improve the learning environment for the

students,” he said. “Many people in Phuket are aware of the outstanding success of our Sports Academies, but less aware of our Academic Academies in Business; Art and Design; Film and Media; and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). “These academies provide an added dimension to the school and offer experiential opportunities for those with passion to pursue their interests or develop talents beyond external examinations and to a professional standard, before graduating to university. “It is our job to see that students are offered a breadth of learning opportunities that extend to the highest possible levels, and back this up with an exceptional teaching staff. In this we can never be satisfied because learning is always open-ended. “However, what is particularly

Mile high in the Orient Part two of a Hong Kong adventure Anton Makhrov news@novostiphuketa.com

Hong Kong at night is by far more alluring when the sun goes down and the neon lights flare up.

@thephuketnews

W

hile observing the city from above I couldn’t help imagining the busy life bustling there in the streets and alleys of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. My imagination generously supplied me with various pictures from various sources from Ian Fleming’s novels to a Deus Ex video game. So I was aching to dive into the whirlwind of the city’s colours, sounds, flavours and smells. I must admit, I was lucky enough to get my first experience after sunset. Hong Kong at night is by far more alluring when the sun goes down and the neon lights flare up. Arguably, daytime is worth spending outside of the streets, be it out or above the city (or at least visiting the city museums parks). Hong Kong at night is just amazing,

with taxis honking and zooming, people chatting, hieroglyphs glowing and skyscrapers towering all over the place. Bangkok residents will definitely feel at home in this weird non-stop disco of modern Asian life. The Symphony of Lights at The Avenue of Stars is a must see experience for those visiting Hong Kong for the first time. Conducted every day at 9pm on both banks of Victoria Harbour, this light and laser show is a real calling card of the city. Of course, no fee is charged. Just remember to go in advance so you can get a decent view – The Avenue of Stars is quite crowded at the time of the show. Hong Kong dining is another experience that allows you to feel the spirit of the city. Being a seafood lover, I simply couldn’t resist the restaurants in the fishing villages of Lei Yue Mun: fish, crabs, prawns, clams and much more, all delivered fresh and

cooked to perfection by local chefs. If small Chinese-style eateries don’t scare you, this place is a must. Haute cuisine is another side of Hong Kong dining. The 2015 Michelin guide to Hong Kong and Macau, lists 64 local restaurants with one, two or three stars, including the iconic Tim Ho Wan, the cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant ever (there’s actually three restaurants already each boasting one star rating). A choice of dim sum and some congee rice porridge make for a perfect breakfast option, while Beijing duck and Hong-Kong style roasted goose or pork (so called siu mei) are ideal for dinner. Meat lovers will definitely appreciate the latter one. Stay tuned for the final part of Anton’s trip, to be published next week.

huket United’s top scorer for three years running, “Action” Jackson Santos of Brazil, is confident in his team’s prospects ahead of the club’s futsal league match up at home this Sunday against Nonthaburi. The match, to be played at the 4,000 seat Saphan Hin Sports Centre, will kick off at 7pm. Jackson (number 5), who is currently joint-fifth in the league race for Golden Boot with 8 goals to his credit, scored the last-minute winning goal last Saturday (May 30) in the club’s 3-2 victory over Bangkok FC. Phuket’s other two goals in that match came from Chonlathon Niamphai (11) and Kittipong Sonsuwan (17). “The last home match against Bangkok was a great game where we learned that seizing opportunities can come out with positive results,” the Brazilian who hails from the city of Fortaleza told The Phuket News. “The match had a great

S

tudent swimmers from Kajonkiet International School (KIS), British International School (BIS), Phuket International Academy (PIA) and Headstart International School (HIS) competed in the Phuket International School Swim Meet held at KIS campus in Kathu on May 20. The group of 50 Flying Fish swimmers from Years 2-8 representing BIS did an outstanding job in competing against HIS, PIA and KIS and managed to take the win for the second year in a row. BISP’s Year 3 (7-8-yearold) swimmers started off the afternoon in great form,

British International School, Phuket’s Year 3 Team. placing first in six out of the eight events. Both the girls and boys relay teams won their races. The Year 4s were unstoppable and won all their respective events, setting a very high standard for the rest of the year groups. The school’s Year 5 and 6

boys relay teams were looking exceptionally strong, and put in some awesome swims to place first in their races. Well done to Rainer, Pablo and Kai who dominated the Year 5 heats. In the Year 6 division Jazz, Hayden and Titan kept the points rolling in for the team,

winning all of their races. It was then the turn of the senior students who continued the great form despite that all of them were in the middle of their exam week. Tim and Tilly displayed strong backstroke swims despite the tough competition, and James finished first in his 100m freestyle race. A special mention must go to Kirill in Year 4 who swam for the Year 8s and did a superb job in his butterfly and backstroke races. The last event of the swim meet saw the BISP Flying Fish coaches take on the KIS coaches in a very exciting 200m freestyle relay. The BISP Flying Fish team raked in a total of 420 points to ensure a comfortable win.

Tight race for silver, bronze IN THE MAY 20 MEET, swimmers in Years 3 up to 8, ages 7 to 13, competed against each other in different stroke events as well as relay and medley events, starting with a warm-up session before getting ready for the heats at the Kajonkiet 25m swimming pool to commence. Throughout the swimming meet children competed in individual performance trials as well as acquiring points for an accumulative score for their respective schools. While BIS took a firm, early lead, the excitement of the head-to-head battle between KIS, PIA and HIS ensued.

The battle continued for 2nd place during the 50m heats, between PIA, HIS and KIS. BIS by that time, had gathered enough points for a well deserved first place, and took home the overall school winners’ trophy. HIS sealed second place with PIA taking home bronze.

F1 Preview: Canada TCT Looking to the future CRICKET VICTORY IN THE PHUKET Cricket Group (PCG) league final last month has steered two-time champions Thalang Cricket Team (TCT) on course for greater team development and a deeper quality squad for next season. How TCT approached the final at the Alan Cooke Ground on May 17 has shone a light on the team’s future, explained captain Bill Stahmer. “We were already confident, as we had steadily improved throughout the season and we were looking forward to having a full-strength squad on the day,” he said. “But we also looked at the Patong lineup and considered what our strengths were, and what was necessary for us to improve on. “We specifically practiced high-ball outfield catches. In our opening matches of the season, we dropped 25 or 26 catches on the boundary,” Bill noted. But the winning formula came down to two key ingredients. “Above all, we had discipline and passion,” Bill said. “And while we’re competitive while out on the field, we’re still social after the match.” The win puts TCT on target for a top performance in the Outrigger T20 competition later this month. “It’s good to have ongoing success with different leaders at the club. It gives everyone the opportunity to lead the team to success – and it shows that we have depth at the club,” says Andrew McMillan, who captained the champion TCT squad last year. “We haven’t won a T20 yet, so we’re looking forward to entering that competition with a strong side.”

BOX OF NEUTRALS

T

here are few circuits as diametrically opposed as those of Monaco and Canada, with the tight, twisty streets of Monte Carlo bearing little resemblance to the long straights of Montreal. So it is that Formula One leaves the European continent with a completely different set of expectations to those it held just a fortnight ago. For some, this weekend presents little more than a return to damage limitation mode. Red Bull Racing’s temporary reprieve from power circuits has now ended, and its best result of the season at chassis-dependent Monaco feels like but a blip on the radar. Its difficult season is likely to only continue at the Canadian Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which demands power which Red Bull’s ailing Renault engines simply cannot deliver. But while performance in 2015 is a world away from that of the team’s golden era of the last six seasons, the battle between teammate Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat remains tense. Kvyat has had a difficult transition

Red Bull Racing’s triple Formula 1 Photo: Michael Elleray into the team after a single season with junior squad Toro Rosso, and clouds quickly gathered over his future with the energy drinks brand in light of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz’s outstanding opening performances. The Russian lifted in Monaco, however, and put barely a foot wrong all weekend on the way to squeezing out Ricciardo at the first turn to snatch fourth place from him. For Ricciardo the pain was twice as bad, with the team putting him on a strategy that allowed him to gamble for his second successive Monaco podium only to force him to give fourth place back to his teammate when he was unable to do so by the final lap. The 2014 Canadian Grand Prix was Ricciardo’s first F1 victory, and in 2015 it is an opportunity to reassert

World Champion Sebastian Vettel. his ownership of the team. The reassertion of dominance is a long and slow tale for McLaren, which similarly holds little hope for a decent result after scoring its first points of the season in Monaco. Honda’s F1 return continues to be a struggle, but Canada will mark its first significant engine upgrade of the season. The Japanese engine supplier has used two of its allocated nine development “tokens”, meaning it has upgraded approximately 7 per cent of the engine. With its two championship-winning drivers having recorded victories around this circuit, and with both enduring trying seasons fighting at the unfamiliar back of the grid, Canada is the place for Honda to prove it is

moving in the right direction. But the need for redemption is most salient in the number one Mercedes garage, where Lewis Hamilton continues to brood on the mistake he and his strategists made in Monaco. Hamilton looked good to begin his sprint to his third career title with a dominant pole in Monaco, but the race loss has rattled him and his momentum. This story is familiar: it was at the same race last year that Hamilton’s run of four successive victories was halted by teammate Nico Rosberg, who Hamilton continues to believe cheated his way to pole. Canada was a sorry second race, during which he was forced into retirement after failing to manage his overheating brakes, from where he watched Rosberg take second place. The Canadian Grand Prix is a circuit Hamilton feels matches his driving ethic like none other on the calendar. It rewards his late-braking flair and natural feel for the car, and in doing so conjures the myth of the man from which it draws its name — the uncompromising Gilles Villeneuve, one of the sport’s quickest ever drivers. For Hamilton it is finish on the podium or fail to finish — only one will do this weekend.

VAGABONDS CREATE HISTORY RUGBY

T

he much anticipated Phuket International Rugby 10s Cup Final, held at Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club on Sunday (May 31), saw the Phuket Vagabonds looking to create history by winning the tournament for the first time. The one and only time the Vagabonds had made a final was also against the same opposition, The Moorabbin Rams, who were looking to get back to winning ways after losing the 2014 final by two points. From the kick off the bigger Rams forwards smashed the ball up field to try and break down the Vagabonds defence, but the home side resisted with some awesome defence and put pressure on the Rams with their swift counter attacking rugby which produced the only score of the first half when Wihan Adlam forced his way over for a try which captain Darryn Mathee converted for the Vagabonds to take a 7-0 lead into half time.

The Vagabond’s Tjaart van der Walt charges forward in the Phuket International Rugby 10s final. The second half started in much the same way with ferocious hits and brutal tackles giving neither side the advantage. Then from a turn over ball the Vagabonds launched an attack which saw the ball kicked down field, which Francois de Kock gathered before side stepping two

defenders to score under the posts. Mathee once again converted the kick to give the Vagabonds a 14-0 lead with 7 minutes to go. A big turning point in the game came when a Vagabonds player was sin binned after a high tackle, and the Rams, sensing their chance, sent

wave after wave of attacks against the Vagabonds line. This eventually broke the home side down and the Rams scored two tries in the next two minutes. However, one of the conversions was crucially missed and this would prove decisive as the Vagabonds,

back to full strength, held out for the final four minutes to create history and become champions for the first time with a 14-12 victory. In the Athena Siam Coffin Dodgers Vets Tournament, where ageing players can still pretend they have the speed, skills and agility that they once possessed in the flower of youth, and indeed some of the play was reminiscent of a bygone era where speed and agility were swapped for brute strength and experience. The group games sorted out which team would play in which of the trophy knockouts. In Group A, one of the favourites Cottesloe Pirates were expected to go all the way but slipped up in the semi final of the cup going down 14-5 against the Nerang Bulls in an all Australian affair. In the other semi final the Moorabbin Rams beat the Phuket Viagrabonds 22-0 to set up another Australian derby in the Cup Final. The Cup Final was taken by regular winners of the tournament The Moorabbin Rams who beat the tough Nerang Bulls 24-5.
