At one minute past midnight tomorrow morning, the road will be closed to allow the underpass contractor to dig the big trench across the junction from north to south, blocking all traffic from crossing the intersection from east to west and vice-versa.

The work will take up to three months, Project Engineer Chalermpol Wongkiattikun from the Department of Highways told The Phuket News on Wednesday (December 3). “Actually, I think, we will finish before March 1. But I have given that as the finish date just in case [more

Govt says Uber app ‘is illegal’ Tanyaluck Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

he Uber phone app, which can be used to summon a taxi, and which was launched in Phuket just days ago, has been declared illegal by the Department of Land Transport (DLT). The DLT alleges that Uber is using not only “cars that are not correct for public service” but also cars that “are not registered” as taxis – in other words, “black plate” taxis. The DLT announced the ban on Uber – which also operates in Bangkok – on its website today (November 28) and warned, “Do not use the Uber Service because it is not safe and Uber is not part of the public transportation system.” Teerapong Rodprasert, the

Instead, drivers will have to go north to the Thanachart Bank, make a U-turn and come back to the lights. Similarly, it will be impossible for traffic from Samkong to turn right or go straight on; drivers will have to go left, to the U-turn at the International Hospital, then go back to the lights. Traffic from the north wanting to go to Kathu and traffic from the south wanting to go

to Phuket Town will also have to go through the lights, do a U-turn and come back. Mr Chalermpol added, “We have already had talks with the police. We will set up route maps and signs so that peple are well informed.” Phuket Town Police Superintendent Sermphan Sirikong told The Phuket News, “We already know about this and the superintendent of traffic will talk with the construction people before they close the road. “We have a plan to organise police officers to direct the traffic efficiently.”

Director-General, explained, “Uber services passengers with green- and black-plate cars. In addition, the prices it charges are not according to the law.” The announcement came after Uber was discussed at a meeting between the DLT, the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, the Department of Business Development and the 11th Military Circle of the Army. The announcement went on, “There could be future problems about credit card payments and service. The way payments are made could cause passengers financial problems in the future.” It added that credit card payments are considered to be secure enough. Apart from the legality of the cars being used, and of the prices Uber charges, “[some] of

the drivers do not have public driver licenses.” Warren Tseng, Uber’s International Launcher, who headed the entry of Uber into Phuket, was not immediately available for comment. However, the authorities have now opened a door to negotiations, summoning (not inviting) Uber and two similar operations, Malaysia’s GrabTaxi, and Brazil’s Easy Taxi – to a meeting next Tuesday (December 9) with the aim of convincing them to comply with existing regulations. A statement issued for Uber on Friday (November 28) said only, “We respect and welcome the opportunity to engage with the relevant authorities to help them better understand the value we bring to the transportation ecosystem of Thailand.”

No ban on booze during holidays THERE WILL BE NO BAN ON ALCOHOL today – HM the King’s birthday, it has been announced, nor on Constitution Day, next Wednesday (December 10). The Phuket News on Tuesday (December 2) contacted Phuket police commander Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit who said that he had received no notification from the Royal Thai Police in Bangkok but added that, looking at previous years, an alcohol ban was unlikely. In Bangkok, however, a spokesman for the Royal Thai Police confirmed that the Police Strategy Unit decided there would be no booze ban on December 5, nor any “request” not to sell alcohol on the day. uyers in the ritzy Chom Tawan property development on the road from Laguna to Layan are waiting anxiously for December 17, when they will find out if they are to be thrown out of the homes they have mostly paid for. One of the buyers, Eden Oestreich, told Phuket News TV, “When we came into the development we knew the developer had already mortgaged – unknown to the buyers – [both land and homes] to the Chinese Bank. “But he agreed to pay a percentage of that and the owners agreed to loan him the money to to try to pay [the bank] so that we could have our titles. “Shortly after we bought, the developer renegued and here we are, two years later, looking at having [our homes] auctioned off in two weeks’ time. Andy Street, principal of the developer, Napawan Asia, and its parent company, Tawan,

In a response published by the Bangkok-based Property Report magazine, he admitted, “Napawan Asia was over extended commercially at the commencement of the Global Financial Crisis. “I still intend to deliver all that the buyers require. “The outstanding issues are the mortgage repayments to the bank and the remaining payment to the builder, where a draft agreement has been is-

sued to resolve this outstanding matter. Within weeks of this date there will be firm plans to bring this debt restructuring to a conclusion.” Property Report notes that Mr Street does not deny that the 48 owners in the project have been asked to contribute cash to a deal that will see the bank repaid and the title deeds released. Nor does he deny that – if an agreement cannot be reached – the creditors may seize the property. However, he says this is “unlikely to be the preferred outcome for the bank”, which

19 Cambodian monks arrested NINETEEN CAMBODIAN monks were defrocked and arrested on Tuesday (December 2) after police found them to be in Thailand illegally and soliciting donations in Wichit. At 6pm, Muang District Clerk Suthee Sirianan, Phuket Immigration chief Lt Col Tienchai Chompoo, Wichit police, officials from the Phuket Cultural Office and Territorial Defence volunteers took part in the arrest of the monks, who’d been camped in the forest in the Chao Fa Mine areas. The officials swooped after a call from local residents

complaining that the monks had been going around asking for donations from residents and tourists. Police searched three tents and found foreign and Thai cash inside each monk’s bag. Some had around B1,000, others around B10,000. Police also found 19 mobile phones, fake passports and monks’ IDs from Cambodia. They discovered that the monks had been camped in the wood without permission for more than two weeks. In the morning, they would go out to collect alms and

asked for cash donations. Around midday they would come back to their tents where they would eat half of the alms food and then sell the other half back to the food vendors in the market. The monks were taken to Wat Mongkolnimit for examination by Phuket’s head monk, Phra Khru Meita. After deciding that they had not been following Buddhist monkhood precepts he ordered them defrocked. All 19 were then taken to Immigration to be charged of being in Thailand illegally.

is negotiating with Tawan on the restructuring. The date, December 17, relates solely, he says, to a deadline set with the bank to agree payment terms, and does not mean that the bank will automatically take further action on that day. The owners themselves have not yet given up. Daryl Davies, who said he had paid some A$UD500,000 (B14 million) for his home said, “We’ve tried quite a few things. We are hoping the military government will intervene – we have put our case to them and they expressed concern, even alarm. We expect to hear from them in a week or so. “We have also asked the Phuket court to hear a petition from the owners to have the court compel the Land Department to recognise our rights as the true owners.” December 17 will tell whether Mr Street’s assessment is correct or the buyers’ last-ditch efforts are successful – or whether the buyers will find themselves homeless and severely out of pocket.

He noted, “There is nothing illegal in this case but it affects local people’s feelings about structures looking down on sacred items. “Villagers in the area said they were not informed about the details of the project, and community leaders complained to Provincial Hall as soon as they heard about it. “We believe [the planners of] big projects should listen to the local community before planning construction. This does not need to be as big a process as a public hearing, but they should at least make sure that people living nearby will not be affected by the project in any way.” He said, from now on, anyone planning a new building must be aware of the rules and local sensitivities.

TWO HAND GRENADES were spotted by a Burmese worker at a garbage dump on Soi Saiyuan 18 in Rawai on Tuesday afternoon (December 2). Lt Paratpong Kaewgaemjan, head of the bomb squad, ordered the area cordoned off before examining the devices, which were identified as M26A2 grenades, still in good condition. Burmese worker Nay A told police that he was sorting out rubbish before burning it, when he came across the plastic bag with the grenades in it.

boss,” he said. Police said they believe the grenades either belonged to someone who wanted to get rid of them before they were found in possession of illegal arms, or had been stashed at the dump by teenage gang members for later use against rivals. Either way, they said, they will identify the owner. This is the second time in six weeks that grenades have been found apparently dumped in Phuket. On October 28 an M67 grenade was found on the beach at Cape Panwa.

In the past few weeks, local people have been creeping back onto the beaches to rent chairs or mats and sell food and drink. This must stop, said ViceAdmiral Sayan Prasongsamrej, Commander of the Royal Thai Navy’s Third Area Command. He added that, if necessary, the Navy will send troops to enforce the rules. Speaking after a meeting at the Navy HQ in Cape Panwa with provincial police chief Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit and local municipalities, the admiral also said, “We have decided on clear zones for jet skis and swimmers by using marker buoys to mark off the swimming areas so that jet skis or speedboats do not hit swimmers. Beach tourists clashed with Thai authorities when a task force of about 20, comprising officials from the OrBorTor Cherng Talay, police and army, raided the beach, forcefully removing umbrellas and mobile loungers being utilised by tourists. The officials removed cushions, umbrellas, sunbeds and chairs, leaving only mats and cloths on the sand. Several tourists were upset and disputed the action of officials, but to no avail. According to eyewitnesses, some tourists stubbornly refused requests to take down their umbrellas and some reportedly had expressed their anger by throwing their um-

Thankfully, the situation did not get violent. The task force finally left by about 2pm. Not long after, however, about five servicemen from the Royal Thai Navy Region 3 command arrived to the scene and attempted to pacify beach operators and tourists. The Navy told the tourists that they can bring their own umbrellas to use on the beach, but that no vendors

were allowed to rent out or sell umbrellas and loungers “in the area of the beach”. The incident follows a related meeting earlier that day, chaired by Maan Samran, Cherng Talay OrBorTor president and Marine Office Chief,Phuripat Teerakulpisut as well as Col Paworn Pornphromma, who had visited and talked to local residents and beach operators near Patcharee Seafood on Surin Beach. The discussion had confirmed that OrBorTor Cherng Talay has not yet given the

green light to permit beach service commerce for sunbeds, umbrellas as well as food and beverage operators. Officials explained to beach operators clearly that they cannot conduct business on or at the beach. However, officials have given the green light to massage and food/beverage vendors to operate in a specifically designated area, just above the beach in the area just atop of the sea wall, stretching the length of the beach. Sunbeds and umbrellas are still not permitted in this designated area, and the local government is still discussing whether or not to allow said businesses to operate there. Chay Singkaew, Surin Beach sunbeds operator commented: “We suffer because we haven’t been able to work on the beach for the last four months. “We have no money to pay for home mortgages or car payments.” Darawan Naknakorn

POLICE CHIEF MAJ Gen Pachara Boonyasit has confirmed that tourists may take their own umbrellas or umbrellas rented from businesses off the beach and erect them on the sand. He was commenting after investigating the confusing incident on Surin Beach on November 28 when there were angry scenes as tourists were told to take down their umbrellas by a combination of OrBorTor and Marine Office officials, police and Army officers.

It seems that communication was not the best, resulting in disgruntled tourists – believing they were being told not to bring umbrellas, chairs and sunbeds onto the beach – becoming involved in angry scenes with the assorted officials. “It’s okay for people to put up their umbrellas on the beach, as long as it not for business purposes,” Gen Pachara said. “I can assure you that that this type of incident will never happen again.”

Beach protection racket not our doing, says Navy THE COMMANDER OF the Royal Thai Navy’s Third Area Command has denied allegations that navy personnel have been collecting money from beach encroachers, offering in return to protect them from the authorities. “I have heard a lot of allegations that navy [personnel] are collecting money from beach encroachers or business operators,” ViceAdmiral Sayan Prasongsamrej said on November 27. “I want to stress that no personnel from the Royal Thai Navy’s Third Area Command are doing anything like that. We are not involved. “If you have any photographs or evidence identifying anyone who is collecting money – or you have any other suggestion about this – please contact me directly at my office at Cape Panwa” he added. “The Navy’s Third Area Command now has sole responsibility for Phuket. No

other arm of the military has responsibility,” he stated. “Even if you have paid, other arms of the military cannot protect you from [punishment for] any illegal action you take. Phuket is our area, so how can they help?” he asked. He also showed reporters how Navy uniforms differ from other services, using three of his men as models. “Although the [camouflaged] uniforms are generally similar, there are two differences: the cap and the wording on the shirt pocket. “We have a different style of cap from any of the other branches of the armed forces,” Vice Admiral Sayan explained. No other branch of the armed forces wears a similar patrol cap. The camouflage uniforms worn by the Navy also have the name of the naval unit stitched onto the left breast pocket, with the individual’s named stitched above, he explained.

Authorities on watch for plague from Madagascar AUTHORITIES IN PHUKET are on the watch for another deadly medical condition – bubonic plague, also known as the Black Death – after news came of an outbreak that has killed 47 people in four months in Madagascar, the large island off the east coast of southern Africa. However, health officials stress that there is no cause for alarm. The Chief of the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PHO), Dr Kajornsak Kaew-

jarat, told The Phuket News, “The Health Department has not informed us directly about this yet, but we are aware of it. The Black Death is very rare, and has not been found in Thailand in many years.” The most recent severe epidemic in Thailand was in 1913, according the Thai Department of Medical Sciences website. In that outbreak in Thonburi, some 300 people died. Since then, the disease has been detected only once, in 1952, when one person died.

But between 1346 and 1353 the disease killed somewhere between 75 and 200 million people in Europe. Modern antibiotics, however, are highly effective, with the death rate being around one per cent, compared with 60 per cent of those left untreated. Dr Kajornsak said, “Our job is to help people understand about the Black Death. We are also keeping an eye out for people coming from highrisk countries. I am certain there is no need to worry.”

Offices and other officers involved, depending on the case, and will serve as a place for landowners to meet and discuss the processes and the problems that have been slowing down the processes.” He added that the Damrongtham Centre has been dealing with individual land cases for a long time. But from now on landowners who have any problem over processing any kind of land paper can go to the Damrongtham Centre at Provincial Hall or to its satellite offices at each District Office to discuss the problem. “It will make the process more transparent. Land owners will be able to understand the officials and find out why their paper is delayed.”

dogs in Bangkok next year, “we expect to find a large number of dogs who need specialist treatment, and these dogs will be brought to the shelter here in Phuket”. The SDF is now looking for additional funds to help build the hospital. Visit www.chuffed.org/project/4896/ to donate.

FI FT Y-SI X-Y EA R OLD Chalong resident Jaroen Chamnanyon has posted a giant message to burglars after his house was ransacked on November 18. His message to the criminals: “Dear thieves and robbers, all the Buddha images I had collected are gone. Please don’t waste your time coming here again.” Apart from his precious collection of images of famed Wat Chalong abbot Luang Phor Chaem, the burglars ran off with a laptop computer and a .38 pistol with 10 bullets, together worth about B1 million. Mr Jareon erected the sign outside his house in Soi Chao Fa on November 27. Neighbours said he was upset over the robbery and the fact that the police had made no progress towards catching the burglars and retrieving his prized effigies. Mr Jaroen said he had a full

collection of every Luang Poh Cham effigy produced from the first, made in 1941, up to the latest, made in 2013. He said he posted the message to tell the thief not to waste time raiding his house again because there was nothing left in his house worth stealing, and added that he wanted police to catch the perpetrators, who he believes are a gang. Jaroen said that the thieves might be the same people who infamously stole a valuable image from Wat Chalong. Col Krittapas Dejintarason, Chalong police superintendent, said, “I asked investigators to follow this case but the investigation was slowed down because we had to send officers to maintain public safety during the Asian Beach Games “But now we have our men back and we will work on finding the burglar and bringing him to justice as soon as possible.”

Clearing up confusion

T

he situation at Phuket’s beaches the past few weeks can be likened to a confusing match of ping pong – the ball of “rule” being swatted back and forth over the net of “law”. On one side of the table are local authorities, reinforced by the police, army and navy, who have held a firm stance on maintaining the order established by the NCPO’s mass sweeping of Phuket’s beaches earlier this year. This is despite an outcry by some tourists and affected beach businesses on the other side of table who desperately want things to be “like before”. Indeed some of them have even stubbornly defied the new order, with several vendors sneaking back on the beaches to ply their trade as they did before the crackdown (Front page story last week). This lot tend to revert to

guilt and ultimatum messages like – “If you don’t bring things back to like before, all the tourists are going to stop coming to Phuket,” and “Beach vendors are going to continue to be unable to feed their families.” Nonetheless, local authorities maintained their strong stance on the matter, and The Phuket News applauds their consistency thus far. But this has not been without conflict. Last Friday, an “inspection” by local officials, army and police of Surin Beach saw more tourists caught in the middle of the private-public beach control struggle, with, according to eyewitnesses, beach vendors cheering them on in their defiance (see page 6). Though a few tempers flared, thankfully the situation didn’t escalate too much, and Navy personnel later showed

up to quell the situation and reiterate that it was okay for tourists to bring their own umbrellas to the beach. The Navy was only echoing Phuket Vice Governor Jamroen Tipayapongtada’s clear mandate on November 19. Despite the dire situation as painted by some idle vendors, tourists clearly still have the option to buy/rent beach mats and umbrellas from vendors on private property – just not on the beach itself. Pretty clear. Neither the provincial government, nor the Navy, the Police or any other authority have yet to permit vendors to carve their own space on the beach to conduct any type of business there, whether giving massages, renting out umbrellas, mats or walking around selling souvenirs. The beaches are public land, governed by a clear set of rules. Full stop.

Land of the rising sun to probe distant frontiers J

apan on Wednesday (December 3) successfully launched a probe destined for a distant asteroid on a six-year mission, just weeks after a European spacecraft’s historic landing on a comet. The explorer, Hayabusa 2, blasted off aboard Japan’s main H-IIA rocket from Tanegashima Space Center in the south of the country. The rocket roared up out of the Earth’s gravitational pull trailed by orange flames at 1:22 pm (0422 GMT) after launch delays due to bad weather. Hayabusa2 was successfully separated from the HIIA and entered the intended orbit around the planet at the start of its mission, according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The probe will use the Earth’s gravity as a slingshot to propel it towards its target. Te l e v i s i o n f o o t a g e showed JA X A c rew at

ground control clapping as the launch was confirmed a success, while social media users around the world tweeted their congratulations. T h e 31- b i l l i o n -y e n ($260-million or B8.5-billion) project will send the explorer towards the 1999JU3 asteroid in deep space. It will blast a crater in the asteroid to collect materials unexposed to millennia of wind and radiation, in the hope of answering some fundamental questions about life and the universe. It is expected to reach the asteroid in mid-2018 and spend around 18 months in the area. It will also drop tiny MINERVA-II rover robots as well as a French-German landing package named Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) for surface observation. If all goes well, asteroid samples will be returned to

Earth in late 2020. The carbonaceous asteroid is believed to contain organic matter and water, the stuff of life. Analysing the extraterrestrial materials could help shed light on the birth of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago and offer clues about what gave rise to life on Earth, scientists have said. The Hayabusa2 mission blasted off weeks after the European Space Agency succeeded in making the first-ever landing on a comet in November. Scientists said initial data sent from the robot lab Philae showed traces of organic molecules and a surface much harder than imagined. Philae, released from its mothership Rosetta, has gone into hibernation on comet 67P/Chur y umovGerasimenko, having used its onboard battery power

after 60 hours of prodding and probing. JAXA aims to bring 100 milligrams (1/286th of an ounce) of samples to Earth after a round trip of more than five billion kilometres. The probe is the successor to JAXA’s first asteroid explorer, Hayabusa -- the Japanese term for falcon -which returned to Earth in 2010 with dust samples after a trouble-plagued seven-year mission. The spherical 1999JU3 asteroid, which is around a kilometre (half a mile) across, is believed to contain significantly more organic matter and water than the potato-shaped rock studied by the original Hayabusa. Despite various setbacks during its epic seven-year odyssey, including intermittent loss of communication and damage to its motors, the first Hayabusa was hailed as a scientific triumph when it returned to Earth. Steps to deciding disputes Tippaya Moonmanee Duensing Kippen

W

hen there is a dispute between an employer and an employee in Thailand that cannot be settled informally one of the parties may consider taking the issue to court. By way of the Labour Court Establishment and Procedure Act (1979) (the “Act”), Thailand has established a special “Labour Court” and procedure to resolve employment-related disputes. The Labour Court has jurisdiction over disputes involving the following: Employment contracts. Wrongful acts between employers and employees in connection with a Labour dispute or in connection with the performance of work under an employment agreement. Appeals against a decision of a member of the Labour Relations Committee or the Minister of the Interior (where 1 or 2 above were first submitted to such Committee or Minister instead of going directly to the Labour Court). Pursuant to the Act, a typi-

LABOUR LAW SECRETS PART IX cal Labour Court case would proceed as follows: A party who initiates a Labour case (the “Plaintiff”), against the other party, files a “Plaint” detailing their grievance to the local Labour Court branch where the work place is located. The Plaint can be filled either in writing or orally. The Labour Court is then required to fix the date and time for a hearing and, without

delay, summon the Defendant to appear in the Labour Court on that date. If the Defendant would like to file an Answer to reply to and defend against the Plaint, the Defendant may do so within the time fixed by the Labour Court prior to the hearing date. Prior to the first hearing, and for the purposes of protecting the relationship between the parties, the Labour Court

will require the Plaintiff and Defendant to meet with a representative of the Labour Court to discuss a possible amicable settlement of the dispute. If the parties are able to reach such a settlement they will then enter a compromise agreement and withdraw the case. Note: such a compromise agreement would then be fully and virtually “automatically” enforceable by the Labour

Court should one party not honour such agreement. However, if the parties cannot settle the dispute, the litigation will continue. In which case, the parties will then submit any relevant evidentiary documents in support of their claims or defenses to the Labour Court. The first hearing of evidence will then proceed. Note: this may be on the same day as the unsuccessful settlement negotiations or it may be at a later date as determined by the Labour Court but once such hearing has begun it may not be adjourned for more than seven days until completed. After all the necessary evidence has been taken, the hearing will be pronounced closed and the Judgement on the case will be pronounced within three days from such date. The Act requires that the Judgement be made in writing and specify, in brief, the relevant facts, decisions, and reasons therefor, as found and decided by the Labour Court. It should be noted that the Act provides that Labour Court is directed to consider an

employee’s particular: working conditions; costs of living; personal hardships; wage level; employment rights, and other employment benefits, as compared to a similarly situated employee elsewhere – in making it’s decisions. Either party may appeal the Judgement directly to the Supreme Court of Thailand within 15 days from the date of the pronouncement of the Judgement. Timing from the date that the Plaint is filed until the Judgement is rendered is generally nine to 24 months. However, a complicated case may require significantly more time. And completion of any appeal will likely take several years. Finally, as to costs, it should be noted that the Act exempts all Labour Court cases from any court filing fees. oth the Finance Ministry and Commerce Ministry are confident the Thai economy will grow by more than 4 per cent next year due mainly to government investment. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, deputy director general of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO), said Thai gross domestic product (GDP) is predicted to grow by 4.1 per cent next year because the global economy would pick up, though there would be some uncertainty. He advised that Thai businesses increase its marketing campaigns in the US, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. Thai exports should increase by 3.5 per cent next year. Mr Ekniti said the government must speed up its spending to stimulate the economy, especially in the first quarter of next year. He also called for quick disbursement of state enterprise

budgets totaling more than B290 billion. But the FPO official warned that there would be two conflicting influences on global monetary flows next year. The US economy is improving, he said, and US interest rates are likely to rise. That will push up the value of the US dollar against other currencies. Meanwhile, European countries, Japan and China will do the opposite, easing their monetary policies to boost their weak economies. This will see both the Euro and yen fall against the baht, he predicted, warning exporters and importers to consider moves carefully in light of possible currency rate changes. Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya said that the government will employ four economic strategies to building confidence among both domestic and foreign investors, and to stimulate the economy.

First, the government will cooperate with the private sector to develop a basic digital framework to enable Thailand to become more competitive at the international level. The second strategy calls for revamping the country’s education system to meet future demand, he said. Reform for both the government and state enterprise sectors is contained in the third strategy while the last one focuses on elimination of corruption and creating transparency in business. The government will stimulate the country’s economy through speeding up 2015 fiscal budget disbursements, he said. The Board of Investment has approved promotional privileges for 380 investors with combined investment of B429 billion, Gen Chatchai, adding that he is optimistic that the country’s economy will begin to recover early next year. Indian tycoon throws mass wedding for fatherless women

A

n Indian diamond trader has thrown a mass wedding ceremony for 111 fatherless women and given each one gifts worth thousands of dollars, saying giving a bride away was “sacred”. Mahesh Savani said the women, whose families were all too poor to finance their weddings, saw him as their foster father. The 44-year-old said he had given each one gifts of gold and other items worth 450,000 rupees (US$7,250) to start their married lives, as well as paying for the wedding. “Material gifts are not important, but I have given my

ceremony was held at a school in Gujarat state last Sunday (November 31). Savani, who has now or-

ganised the weddings of 251 women, said he began his charitable campaign in 2008 when one of his own staff

members died. “I was very shocked when one of my employees died just 12 days before he could marry off his two daughters. It was very difficult for the family to arrange for marriage,” he said. “So I decided that I would become their foster father and marry them off. This is how it began,” Savani said. It is not known how much the giant ceremony wedding cost, but Indian weddings are famous for their grand scale with multi-course feasts, decorated horses, brass bands and huge tents arranged to entertain hundreds or even thousands of guests. Doctor’s bomb joke costs him $90,000

HIs flight to Bogota became pricier. Photo: danfinkelstein.

A DOCTOR THOUGHT IT might be funny to crack a joke about a bomb in his luggage. Instead, he partly forced the evacuation of Miami International airport, and earned an almost US$90,000 fine. Manuel Alvarado, 60, will pay out US$89,172 for his “momentary lapse of reason

in making these statements,” which prompted costly evacuations and delays for airlines, and brought out a police bomb squad, said his lawyer Brian Bieber. Just before boarding a flight to Bogota on October 22, a security officer asked Alvarado routine questions;

the Venezuelan doctor responded that he was carrying C-4 explosives. T hough he cor rected himself and said he was just joking, it was too late. “He is extremely remorseful. He had no intent to place anyone in fear. He made what turned out to be the

worst mistake of his life,” Bieber said. Alvaro will pay the fine in a deal that saw prosecutors agree to drop charges of making a false bomb threat and criminal mischief. Once he has paid, the surgeon can return home, the attorney added. AFP

Terror alert: Christmasy sugar gets German cops to act VANILLA SUGAR FOR Christmas biscuits trickling from an envelope sparked a bioterrorism scare at a German mail distribution centre on Monday (December 1), local police said. Police, paramedics and a fire brigade team in full protective suits swarmed the facility after staff spotted the white powder and an employee complained of itching, apparently fearing it was a dangerous chemical or biological agent. Testing quickly determined that the material was not dangerous, said police after the incident in the town of Pinneberg near the northern city of Hamburg. Further investigation found that the material was home-made vanilla flavoured sugar which a 40-year-old woman had mailed to her mother, who was planning to bake traditional Christmas biscuits for the family. Thimble is a pot bellied pig. He is a house pig, currently one year and 5 months old. He is very smart, can spin on command and yes, he only does so in exchange for a treat! He is also very clean. He can be very bossy at times, especially when it comes to food. He likes taking a bath and playing with a ball, which when rolled, treats fall out from inside. His favourite food is seedless grapes, but he would eat almost anything! Punim Thimble the Pig

he Affenpinscher is one of the oldest toy breeds in the world. It was known in Germany as “Monkey-Terrier”. This bread originated in the area around Central Europe where roughcoated terrier type dogs were used on farms for ratting in the barns and outbuildings. Gradually as they were bred down to size, they found their way into residences, also with the object of keeping down the rat population. The breed is thought to be the influence behind other rough-coated breeds such as the Griffon Bruxellois and the Miniature Schnauzer. The Affenpinscher is a very brave, alert, intelligent and tough little terrier type. He is famous for his “monkey-ish” expression which comes from his jutting chin, moustache and heavy eyebrows. His nose which is turned neither up nor down, has good open nostrils. He has dark piercing eyes and a roguish expression. The mature Affenpinscher will have a longer main around the neck area, which blends into the main body hair. The hair on the ears is always cut very short to emphasise that alert expression. His body is sturdy, his height is approximately 36 cm to 44 cm. He gives a square appearance but the female may be slightly longer in body. The skull is round and domed. The eyes, round and brilliant, never bulging, well set in the head. His legs, front and rear, are not too heavy in appearance. Colours are black, grey, silver, red, black and tan or beige. When on the move this little fellow will have a light, free and jaunty attitude.

A black Affenspinscher. Photo: Supplied Temperament is that of a game, alert and inquisitive nature with great loyalty and affection towards his family. Although not usually a noisy breed, they can become quite voiciferous when excited or on the alert. The coat is easy to maintain but may require a little removal of body hair to keep the correct outline of the breed. He is a very good dog with children although being of terrier disposition not really advisable with those under four years, as his play can become a little boisterous and accidental scratching or even nipping could upset a toddler.

Governor Nisit ready for the high season MEET THE GOVERNOR Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

Throughout high season, thousands of tourists will come to Phuket each day. Ensuring everyone’s safety is very important and a big priority for us.

Phuket Governor Nisit Jamsomwong, 52, was born on September 24, 1962 in Ratchaburi Province. He graduated with a BA in Political Science from Chulalongkorn University with a gold honorary gift (the result from achieving a first) followed by a scholarship from HM King Bhumibol to study for a master’s degree in the same university.

@thephuketnews

Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong is a man with ambition, plans and vision. The recently appointed Phuket chief has agreed to share his ideas and ambitions with The Phuket News in a monthly column. This month the Governor talks to The Phuket News’ Saran Mitrarat about events and safety measures in Phuket during tourism high season.

T

he first thing I would like to say in this letter to The Phuket News readers is: thank you all for your support during the Asian Beach Games – you have done a great job. We received a lot of encouragement from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), sport players and all attenders that Phuket people are very nice, volunteers – both Thai and foreigners – assisted them a lot with coordinating. We didn’t expect many people to attend the competitions during the day, as we expected most people to be at work on weekdays. However, we received a lot of good feedback that the events were busy and crowded, particularly the Thai boxing. Secondly, in honour of and to celebrate HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 87th birthday on December 5, which is also Father’s Day, I would like to try and persuade everyone to wear a yellow shirt – the colour of Monday (when the King was born) throughout the entire month. On December 5 the ceremonies will kick off at 6:30am with the Governor and a host of other public dignitaries offering alms to 86 monks, as part of a blessing ceremony to honour HM The King at Queen Sirikit Park in Phuket Town. Later on in the morning, officials and well-wishers will be given the opportunity to pay allegiance to HM The King by signing the public birthday book for him at Phuket Rajabhat University’s main conference hall. At 10am, officials can pay allegiance by taking an oath to be honest officers. A candle-lighting ceremony will be held at Saphan Hin at 7pm. The third event in December will be the [2004 Boxing Day] Tsunami 10th anniversary, with a big event being held in Phang Nga as well as many other activities in different areas in Phuket. Originally, we planned to have a fullscale evacuation practice involving Rawai, Patong and Kamala. However tourists made it clear they did not want to hear the siren or any evacuation alerts on that day, so we have postponed it to low season. Anyway, we still have other activities which will make it a special day, reminding everyone that we

will never forget. Throughout high season, thousands of tourists will come to Phuket each day. Ensuring everyone’s safety is very important and a big priority for us. CCTV will really help police to find suspects and protect people from criminals. At the moment Phuket has a total 1,422 CCTV cameras – the 113 broken cameras are now being fixed. We recently received a budget from the Tourism Department to install more cameras around Phuket; 18 fixed cameras and three dome cameras in Phuket City; 65 fixed cameras and five dome cameras in Patong; 16 fixed cameras and three dome cameras in Karon; and four cameras at Tah Chat Chai. In addition, we have asked 19 private sectors led by the Phuket Tourism Association and Thailand Southern Hotel Association, to install two camera points in public

areas. Moreover, I approved a B800,000 budget for the bicycle police project to assist tourists in tourist attraction areas. Its aim is to reduce crime and boost public safety in popular tourist spots during the high season by the addition of at least four officers. Bicycle patrol officers can easily be recognised in their white polo shirts, with police insignia and dark shorts. They are also setting a good example by wearing protective head gear. A good command of the English language is one of the core skills required by officers assigned to bicycle patrols. All of the things we have done is for the safety of our tourists and local people. These measures that we set out are expected to ensure the safety of tourists, while they are travelling in Phuket. So please, enjoy your holiday.

Four Thai cash crops under consideration for GMO testing

December 5 is World Soil Day for Thais

T

he Land Development Department (LDD) will organize “World Soil Day” to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 87th birthday anniversary on December 5th, 2014. The Land Development Department, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Soil and Fertilizer Society of Thailand, Soil and Water Conservation Society of Thailand and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are joining hands organizing the day to commemorate the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King’s 87th birthday, and to raise public awareness of soil and its contribution to humanity and the environment Soil is a critical component of the natural system and a vital contributor to the human commonwealth through its contribution to food, water and energy security and a mitigator of biodiversity loss and climate change. H is Majesty the K ing has long realized the impacts of soil degradation caused by nature and as a result of poor soil management. HM the King has developed a strong commitment to protecting Thailand’s soil resources through numerous Royal Projects. Soils have been neglected for too long. The World Soil Day campaign aims to connect people with soils and raise awareness on their critical importance in our lives. Humans have failed to connect soil with food, water, climate, biodiversity and life. Everyone must change their attitude and take up some preserving and restoring actions. @thephuketnews

P

ublic and private agricultural biotechnology researchers in Thailand may soon get the green light from the government to openly develop genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from four economic crops. Gen Prayuth’s government recently appointed a committee to consider lifting the kingdom’s ban on open field GMO trials , specifically for four crops, namely maize, cassava, palm and sugar cane. GMO produce and products widely processed and/or consumed in the kingdom include soya, corn, papaya and cotton. Though some of it is imported to the kingdom from places like the Philippines and US, where GMO regulations are lax at best, Thai farmers are increasingly cultivating GMO produce. Meanwhile, environmental watchdog Greenpeace has urged General Prayuth’s government to stop pushing for open field trials of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the kingdom, but to little avail. The Supreme Administrative Court last month dismissed a lawsuit filed by Greenpeace in 2006 against the Department of Agriculture (DOA) for negligence in the papaya contamination scandal in 2004, when activists had exposed contamination from the DOA’s experimental GMO papaya plantation in Khon Kaen. Though criminal charges of theft, trespassing and destruction of property were successfully lodged by the Department of Agriculture against the Greenpeace activists, no one has ever been held accountable for the GMO contamination, in Khon Kaen and in the dozens of other cases that have surfaced over the past two decades across Thailand, despite a GMO testing being banned. Greenpeace believes that maintaining the ban means the Thai government could continue to define Thailand’s own agricultural policies, which the group says, should be ecologically, socially, economically and culturally appropriate to the country’s unique circumstances. The ban also protects the rights of Thai people and communities from corporate control of agriculture. Tara Buakamsri, Thailand Country Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia said: “Whether or not the Department of Agriculture (DOA) is found guilty of negligence in the management of its GM papaya

Volunteers protest GMOs (left) and help a farmer clear and decontaminate his farm which was found to be contaminated by genetically engineered papaya. Photo: Greenpeace / Vinai Dithajohn field trials in Khon Kaen province in 2004, the fact is that GMO contamination already occurred in many provinces. “This is the biggest lesson learned by Thailand and it proves that experiments on GMOs on the ground in open fields are uncontrollable.” Just last month, after the new government was installed by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MOAC) has opened up the possibility of using GMO technology to improve four economic crops: maize, cassava, palm and sugar cane. The MOAC is considering GMOs “an option” for increasing yields, controlling costs, and cutting down on pesticide use – despite independent studies that show that GMOs do not increase yield but

push up prices and encourage the use of pesticides. Alongkorn Konthong, Director of the Biotechnology Research and Development Office, the Department of Agriculture is planning to ask the NCPO to lift the cabinet’s 2007 resolution banning GMO field trials. “Removing the ban on field trials would amount to widespread GMO contamination in Thailand—endangering the important food crops on which millions of Thais depend. Aside from the papaya contamination in Thailand, experiences around the world, such as in the US, have shown that GMO contamination is nearly impossible to reverse. The consequences to Thailand agriculture will be grave should such contamination continue,” he added.

A riverside base for exploration Alasdair Forbes execeditor@classactmedia.co.th

Above, from left, the exterior and interior of Phra Maha Chedit Chai Mongkol; the Mekong at Mukdahan. Centre of page: Roch formations at Phu Pha Thoep.

M

ukdahan is a small city. It has about 150,000 people, and from the roof on top of the 16-floor River City Hotel you can see how quickly the buildings melt away into the surrounding rice fields. But the city’s attention is focused not on the fields but on the Mekong River, muddy brown and a kilometre wide, dwarfing anything else in the landscape. Cargo boats constantly set off from the quay for Suvannakhet on the other side, with all manner of goods for Laos. They are watched as they depart by the effigies of two Laotian princesses in the Chaomae Song Nang Phi Nong shrine. The princesses drowned while crossing the river at about the time of the founding of the city, in 1770, and their spirits, it is said, have watched over the city ever since. There’s not a huge amount to see in the city; once you’ve strolled along the wide river promenade, gone to the top of the River City, taken the lift to the top of the Mukdahan Tower, visited the quirky mountaintop

Wat Khao Manorom with its Big Buddha under construction and its tributes to UFOs and aliens, then spent an evening at the Indochina Market, you’ve just about done it all. But Mukdahan is a great base for exploring the border provinces of Isan. A few miles outside the city is Phu Pha Thoep national park, famed (locally at least) for its weird rock formations. Carved over millions of years by winds and rain, great rocks sit perilously atop one another. Walking under them is slightly unnerving, and not many people venture too far from the park entrance. Do so, however, and there is a delightful walk of an hour or two as far as the Camel Rock (which looks nothing like a camel) to the edge of cliff looking over a heavily wooded valley far below. Parts of the plateau are covered with wild flowers which, in October and November, when they are in bloom, attract hordes of photographers and romantic couples. To the north of Mukdahan is Phra Tat Phanom, with its graceful Laostyle chedi. Built in the 1500s by King

Setthathirath of Lan Xang, the elegant structure shines white and gold and is a favourite backdrop for people to take photos. Anyone who has visited Wat Chalong in Phuket will recognise the shape – at Wat Chalong the spire on the main building has the same Laotian shape. In the opposite direction, to the southwest of Mukdahan, just inside Roi Et Province, is Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol – an absolute must-see. This is not a wat in the classic sense. There are no monks, though when it is finished it will be a Buddhist study and conference centre. It was built (and continues to be built – it’s far from finished) to house Buddha relics. With a nod to the name of the province, the width from wall to wall of the octagonal site is 101 metres, and the central chedi is 101 metres high. The area on which it is built is 101 rai. For a shrine it is huge. It is also intricately and richly decorated, in and out. There’s not a square centimetre of bare wall. The ceilings, in particular, are spectacular, with jewellike detail. Walking around, one can’t help thinking that one’s sense of wonder must be similar to that of believers visiting for the first time one of the great cathedrals of Europe when they were completed and decorated. At the very top of the main chedi the finial is made of gold – sixty kilos of it. Outside the main court the entire site is surrounded by a wall that echoes the Great Wall of China – not nearly as high, but as broad on top, with dozens of rooms below. All this was paid for with donations from the public. And it costs just B20 to go in.

Revitalise with a raw food diet HEALTH MATTERS Susanna Eduini anna@santosaphuket.com

Raw food is anything that is prepared below 105 degrees. There is no boiling, no deep frying, no steaming, no oven baking.

M

y journey into raw food started almost eight years ago, here in Thailand. I was instantly “captured” and fascinated by the endless possibilities that a raw food diet can offer. I was raised in a family where food was very important, and where there was a certain kind of knowledge: we take our protein from meat, we need to drink cow milk, and so on. I have lived on both sides of the food spectrum. I got into a habit of eating comfort and junk food until I got sick and I discovered that “food” is actually what can make us more healthy, vibrant and energetic. So I decided to become a vegetarian, then vegan and then finally, a “raw foodist”. A vegan raw foodist to be exact. And this was the best choice I have ever made.

Purely unprocessed

Susanna Eduini is the Executive Chef at Santosa Wellness Centre in Phuket, Thailand. She describes herself as a Meta-Coach, Autrice & Spiritual Chef and offers coaching sessions about food and cooking classes. She is the author of three best-seller books about raw food, published in Italy by Edizioni MyLife.

@thephuketnews

So what is raw food? Raw food is anything that is prepared below 105 degrees. There is no boiling, no deep frying, no steaming, no oven baking. The ingredients can be marinated, dehydrated and blended, so the uncooked foods retain their good nutrients, which ultimately gives us a vibrant, healthy and happy state of mind. They are easy to digest so our bodies are less taxed and we can use this extra energy to perform to our full potential, work towards our goals and ambitions and manifest

Susanna Eduini. them into reality. Raw food generally promotes well being and consciousness of the body, mind and spirit. It has a deep impact and effect on our physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and sexual levels.

Real Results

What results can you expect from eating raw food? First of all, an increased amount of energy. This is what amazed me more than anything. After two days on raw food, I felt full of energy and vitality. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also feel your skin and hair blossom. You’ll find yourself sleeping better, having less flu and colds and you will lose your food cravings. Vegan raw food eliminates refined flours,

sugars, as well as dairy products and milk from your diet, helping you to overcome “addictions” to certain types of food. You’ll also have fewer allergies, as well as many more fascinating facts you will discover.

Right Balance

How much raw food do we need to eat in order to get these results? Many people eat only around 50 per cent of raw foods and receive tremendous benefits. As long as you know which are the most important foods to eat and avoid, you will succeed. The food we eat can literally shape our body and our thoughts. You will have a feeling of lightness, energy and joy of being able to eat whenever you want and what you want, taking care of yourself.

W

hen you think of a good old Western breakfast, you imagine some crusty toast, ham, an omelette, pancakes, cereal or other similar tasty food, but here in Phuket a traditional local breakfast is quite the opposite. The culture in Phuket is a mix of Thai Buddhists and Muslims, with over half the locals a mix of Chinese. This is why Chinesestyle food can be found among any of the island’s popular dishes, from breakfast to dinner or street food. One of the most popular breakfasts for Phuketian’s is Siao Boi, otherwise known as Dim Sum, which has a unique spicy, yet sweet thick red sauce. Yaowamal Woaranopakul is the owner of Juan Hiang restaurant and she is the oldest owner of a Siao Boi restaurant in Phuket. The menu has largely developed over the years but the unique sauce is something that no one can copy. “There were around 10 different kinds of Siao Boi when my father was responsible. We have around 50 dishes, mixing authentic recipes with modern tastes and ingredients. However, we have kept the original recipe for the sauce, something you won’t find in other restaurants. “We have five Siao Boi restaurants in total in the family: three Boonrat dim sum branches, the Juan Hiang branch and another one in the Samkong area,” she explained. “The cooks put a lot of effort into the dim sum and the flavours are so fresh you can feel them through every mouthful. Their attention to detail and efforts in making the dim sum, is the key to our success.” Ms Yaowamal said there are a number of Siao Boi restaurants around Phuket, but so few actually make their own food – they just head to the nearest convenience store and buy ready made food.

(Above) Juan Hiang restaurant, (below) a selection of Siao Boi.

“We make our own homemade Siao Boi every evening, in preparation for the next morning. “We care about the taste and freshness of the food, which is why I think the business has continued smoothly over the last century,” she said.

American chef Charles Maurer prepared the dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and more as a live band played a medley of music on Nov. 27. “I really try and put a lot of effort, heart and soul into this. It’s a traditional preparation. Some of these recipes are from my family, like the cranberry sauce and the stuffing. They’ve been in my family for 80 years at least,” Maurer said.

Phuket is home to the some of the most fabulous retreats and resorts in the country and region if not world. Yet it’s mostly tourists from distant lands who get to enjoy them. T

ucked into the rocks above Kata Point, Kata Rock’s Restaurant and Bar is Phuket’s newest and finest culinary experience, making it the top sunset venue for drinking and dining. The restaurant uses the freshest produce available and the menu is an enticing mix of modern Mediterranean with a hint of Thai flavours and local spice. I recently attended the launch of their weekly Sunday Chill poolside brunch. We started off with some refreshing drinks by the pool and some delightful canapés. Grilled sourdough crusty bread, with a layer of Joselito Iberico ham and shaved parmesan cheese. Simple yet divine. After a few glasses of bubbles, we were taken to our table which was beautifully presented. A selection of Mediterranean antipasto platters, seafood, charcuterie and dips were brought out and we really were spoilt for choice. Marinated olives; stuffed mushrooms with a crispy coating; tasty hummus flat breads; potato tortilla topped with roasted garlic, aioli and Italian sausage; grilled polenta cake; and antipasto vegetables, were just a few of the choices on offer. Just when I thought we were finished, they brought out even more scrumptious plates. The sweetcorn pancakes, prosciutto and asparagus tomato jam were delicious, with each mouthful even tastier than the last. There was also lamb, mint and spinach salad with grilled pork belly as well as scrambled eggs and bacon served on sourdough bread.

Now, onto my favourite part of the day. The desserts. A large cone of chocolate profiteroles stuffed with whipped cream was the star of the day. The delicate combination of chocolate and rich cream melts in your mouth and was made to perfection. As if that wasn’t enough, we were also offered sponge cake filled with softly whipped cream and caramel, topped with a selection of tasty nuts. Afterwards, we relaxed with a few more cocktails by the beautiful infinity pool, accompanied by the house DJ playing some chilled out beats. It was the perfect way to digest and finish off the day! Overall the brunch was truly fantastic and the selection of mouthwatering tapas dishes were exceptional.

The service was second-to-none and it’s safe to say, there’s no better way to spend your Sunday than by the beautiful hill top Kata Rocks Hotel.

A large cone of chocolate and original profiteroles, stuffed with tasty whipped cream, was on offer.

Thai internet use growth tops the globe

IN BRIEF China bans web slang

China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) issued new rules last week that forbid all TV shows and ads from using slang terms from the internet. According to Techinasia.com, the new rules are meant to curb the use of web slang that imitates “standard” colloquial expressians. SAPPRFT’s document stressed the historical significance of China’s language and that TV producers and ad agencies cannot “wantonly change or use expressions to create a divide with culture and linguistic chaos.” The law also calls on content producers to strengthen oversight to comply with the new regulations.

Sony hackers leak films for download

Five films were leaked to file-sharing websites after a hacking attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment took place last week. Four of the films have not been released, including Mr. Turner, Still Alive, To Write Love on Her Arms, and Annie. The last film, Fury, was released earlier this year.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2014

Sony have reached out to outside security consultants to learn more about what happened in the web attack, which also includes an investigation on the possibility that hackers working for the North Korean government may have carried out the attack out of China.

Euro lawmakers back Google break-up

The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly for the break-up of Google last week in a largely symbolic vote that casts another blow in the standoff between Brussels and the US Internet giant. MEPs assembled in Strasbourg approved a resolution calling on the EU to consider ordering search engines to separate their commercial services from their businesses. While Google is not directly mentioned in the proposal, the California-based search engine is clearly the target. The resolution passed with 384 in favour and only 174 votes against. The European Parliament has no power to launch the break-up of Google, but the move, introduced by two senior lawmakers, is a further indication that the mood towards the company in Europe has soured, which began in 2010 over the “right to be forgotten” clash about privacy. nternet use in Thailand has risen at the highest rate in the world, climbing 34 ranks in the latest global study conducted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In the Measuring the Information Society Report 2014, Thailand’s internet use ranked in 71st place, up from 105th of the total of 166 countries studied by the organisation. Fiji had the second fastest growth, climbing 24 places to 72nd place, and Burkina Faso was third, rising by 13 places to 142nd. Thakorn Tanthasit, secretarygeneral of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said the sharp rise in the internet use in Thailand was partly supported by the allocation of the international-standard 2.1-gigahertz band for third-generation (3G) mobile services and the increase in mobile internet use. As the result of improvements in the internet use, Thailand’s

overall ICT Development Index (IDI) has improved to 81st place, up by 10 places. Internet use is a factor for the measurement of the IDI, other factors include the access and the skills. He said the study was in line with the earlier study by the World Economic Forum on ICT competitiveness in 2014 through the Network Readiness Index (NRI), in which Thailand was ranked 67th, up from 74th in 2013. Mr Thakorn said the competitiveness of Thailand had improved as the country offered affordable mobile phone tariffs and penetration of mobile phones, as well as the rise in social media use. Although Thailand started us-

HORNS

Director: Alexandre Aja Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Max Minghella, Joe Anderson, Juno Temple, Kelli Garner, James Remar and David Morse. Running time: 120 minutss

@thephuketnews

“A

re you horny? “Getting warmer.” The opening lines to Daniel Radcliffe’s coming out party turns out to have multiple meanings and it’s this binary disposition that makes Horns a standout film in a sea of average adapatations. Though this film is based off of Joe Hill’s dark fantasy novel of the same name, Director Alexandre Aja’s unique vision and tone gives the film a fair bit of muscles set for flexin’. Horns showcases a battle between good and evil, though it’s not clear who – other than Ig – is on which side. From the get-go, Aja leads audiences through a small town inhabited by pleasant folk. Our town, however, begins to unravel within the first half and by the final act it’s clear that these are people who have sinister thoughts and emotions, much like our own. Except these people say these terrible things out loud! In the film, Ig Parrish (Radcliffe) is the prime suspect in the rape and murder of his longtime girlfriend Merrin (Juno Temple). One day, Ig wakes up with horns coming out of his cranium and realises that anyone who is near tells him about the evil thoughts they have inside their own head. Ig is hated in the community for what he is accused to have done and is, naturally, having a difficult time coping with the entire situation considering he doesn’t remember the actual incident. The audience follows Ig as he uses the horns, and his abilities, to dis-

cover the truth about Merrin’s murder. Religion is peppered throughout Horns with direct allegories that even the characters love to point out. Both Ig and Merrin grew up going to church and it’s not lost on anyone that Satan was a fallen angel. These notes become part of a larger weave the films spins, piling on meaning and metaphors with every step Ig takes. Horns is not subtle in the least about it’s good/evil trope and uses it to make way for the power of hindsight, since it’s the horns that become a release for Ig in a community where everyone hates him. The most menacing part of the whole film is that the horns become acceptable

because it’s on a “murderer’s” head – Ig is “the devil” for what he “did”. The film’s final act foments an appreciation of the beginning and the consistent tone that Aja employs. A satisfying ending makes Horns a respectable and re-watchable film. Radcliffe’s performance was spot on as well, with an American accent that was more than acceptable. In fact, four of the main characters in this film were British – all with very believable accents. For Radcliffe, however, this is just a horny warm-up as he embarks on a path to make audience’s forget about the role that made him famous in the first place.

Latino night in Karon

Karon Beach Square, which opened at the end of October, is running a series of fun events to persuade people to walk in off the street and sample its excellent food and drink. On November 23 it featured live jazz and on Saturday (November 29) it attracted admiring crowds along the Karon seafront road when two couples put on a display of Latino dancing, then offered short lessons to those who thought it looked like fun. Karon Beach Square has a menu that includes Thai and international favourites and also a large range of pizzas. Mixologist Joey (from South Africa via Dubai) keeps all at the bar entertained. The next special evening will be an Arabian Night on December 13, following by a Tropical Night on January 17.

Competitions abound off island’s shores CAST AWAY

hoy me hearties, Sad news – For all the many of you who went out on Mena 1, Captain Heem, “The toothless terror of the Andaman Sea” died earlier in the month. Rest in peace my friend, see you in pirate heaven, you were one of the best skippers around. P.I.S.T. (Phuket International Sports fishing Tournament) got off to a great start and on the first day four Sail Fish and one juvenile Marlin, caught on a Tuna line, were logged in. Meanwhile, Queen Marlin limped home on one engine having “nearly” caught one of the biggest Sails the PGFC (Phuket Game Fishing Club) entrants had ever seen, and to add insult to injury were disqualified for being late for the evening check in. Fishing is not always about the fish, hard luck guys, I hear someone

brought a banana on board. Keel haul the lubber! This year the first prize went to the Triple A Team, unfortunately I was unable to attend the prize giving which I believe was quite fortunate as the weather which had held off for the competition decided to join the party with a vengeance. The E.F.T. (Exotic Fishing Thailand) Charity competi-

tion which I mentioned last month raised B63,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the winner being Paul Panabaker from Canada with the biggest fish and the most species. Runner-up was Neill Campbell, a well-known local celebrity. The next competition is the “big one”: The Rawai Beach Fishing Club’s “Classic” three-day Similan’s compe-

tition. The tournament has only a few spaces left on “budget” boats with sleeping accommodation and food provided by the “mothership” and the tournament’s control vessel. Enquiries to Warren Crow at the RBFC’s website (rawaireachfishingclub.com), prices are around B40,000 to B45,000 per head, allinclusive. This month’s humor was provided by a tourist: when out fishing, he asked about port and starboard. I explained “port is left” and “starboard is right” facing the bow (pointy end). While explaining the safety issues arising from navigating at night, “as the port lights are red and the starboard green”, we both looked around for an example and were perplexed to find our local Thai boats had all sorts of fancy colors, and all this as we listened to the various captains using the ship’s radio as a karaoke. Only in Thailand. Tight lines, me fisheroos. Jimmy www.fishinginphuket.com

Phuket to join Thailand Rugby League in 2015 RUGBY LEAGUE JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

T

he Phuket Vagabonds have been chosen to be one of two new teams to join the Thailand Rugby League competition for the 2015 season. Under the new name of the Southern Thailand Warriors, the squad will compete in the six-team league when they kick off their second season next year (the squad will continue to use the Phuket Vagabonds name when competing in rugby union matches outside of the league). All home matches will be played at the stadium at Thanyapura Sports Club in Thalang. “W hat’s lacking with rugby union in Thailand is there is no proper competition or league. We never get much

game time aside from just seven or 10-a-side tournament and one-off matches,” said Pat Cotter, founder and director of the Phuket Vagabonds. “To be involved in this competition, we’re going to get at least eight or nine games in a season. It’s not only good for us but also for people who like to watch rugby league.” Along with the Chiang Mai Titans, the Southern Thailand Warriors will join a league that will include a playoff and a Grand final in Bangkok. The rest of the teams in the league, which hosts its inaugural Grand Final on December 13, currently are only squads from Bangkok and Pattaya. In joining the league, Phuket will also play host to rugby coaching clinics and training camps with professional coaches.

“This is something we want to try and introduce into the schools as well, get more Thai people to play,” said Cotter. Representatives f rom all six teams will meet in Bangkok on December 14 to discuss the schedule and other logistics. For more information, visit trlrugby13.com.

Phuketian to fight BJJ legend MMA ENGLISH MMA FIGHTER James McSweeney is set to take on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Roger Gracie tonight (December 5) at One FC: Warrior’s Way in Manila, Philippines. Formerly of Phuket Top Team and now fighting out of Tiger Muay Thai & MMA Training Camp, McSweeney (14-11) previously won his bout against Cristiano Kaminishi via first round TKO in August at One FC: Reign of Champions. He goes up against Gracie (6-2) who is considered one of the best BJJ athletes on the planet. Though Gracie has only fought eight MMA bouts, the Brazilian is a veteran of Strikeforce and UFC – though he lost his only bout in the biggest promotion to Tim Kennedy via unanimous decision. One FC: Warrior’s Way will begin at 8pm tonight (December 5). thephuketnews

Gerrard, Mata leave Reds, United smiling FOOTBALL

S

teven Gerrard and Juan Mata scored pivotal goals as Liverpool and Manchester United each posted victories over obdurate opposition in the Premier League on Tuesday (December 2). Liverpool captain Gerrard, the subject of speculation about his Anfield future this week, stroked home the crucial second goal as his side came from behind to win 3-1 at 10-man Leicester City. Victory lifted Brendan Rodgers’s side up to eighth place, but they remain five points off the Champions League berths after Mata’s fortuitous strike earned fourth-place United a 2-1 success at home to Stoke City. The Spaniard saw a freekick from wide on the right drift straight into the net in the 59th minute at Old Trafford, sending United to within a point of third-place Southampton, who visited Arsenal on Wednesday (December 3). The Phuket News went to print before all games kickedoff on December 3. Explaining his decision to rest 34-year-old Gerrard for Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Stoke at the weekend, Liverpool manager Rodgers told

BT Sport: “Steven Gerrard was rested last weekend with tonight in mind. “When you rest a player, people ask why. When you play them, you are asked why aren’t you resting them. The energy from being rested at the weekend gave him the energy to play tonight (Dec. 2).” Rodgers revealed before the game that Gerrard has been offered a new contract, but when asked if he was ready to commit to a new deal, the former England captain said: “I will decide when I am ready. “There is nothing to say. When there is, the fans know I will come out and say it.” A knee injury to Wayne Rooney saw 19-year-old James Wilson handed a start for United, who took a 21st-minute lead when Marouane Fellaini headed in Ander Herrera’s inviting left-wing cross. Steven Nzonzi equalised for Stoke six minutes before half, lashing home from outside the box. But Mata’s goal gave United a fourth straight victory, with Marcos Rojo’s leap distracting visiting goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and allowing Mata’s free-kick to nestle inside the left post. After seeing his goalkeeper David de Gea pull off a pair of

Photo: AFP/Paul Ellis stunning late saves, coach Louis van Gaal said: “The last few moments were not necessary, but it is always like that. “We have struggled until the end in the Premier League.... Tomorrow (Wednesday) we have a Christmas party and it’s important we can enjoy that.” West Ham United remain a point behind Van Gaal’s side in fifth place after coming from behind to win 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion. Craig Dawson’s 10th-minute header put the home team in front, but Kevin Nolan equalised 15 minutes later and James Tomkins gave West Ham vic-

tory with a header in first-half injury time. Swansea City climbed to sixth place after late goals from Ki Sung-yueng and Wayne Routledge secured a 2-0 success at home to second-bottom Queens Park Rangers. Burnley climbed out of the relegation zone following a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United, with Papiss Cisse earning the away team a point after George Boyd had put the hosts ahead. Great year for orphanage as boys sign with TPL, win medals FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

W

ith two players joining the Thai Premier League and success at international tournaments in both Thailand and Signapore, it’s fair to say that it’s been a great year for the Youth Football Home of disadvantaged children. The signing of 19-year-old former Phuket FC prospect Wuttichai “Bell” Sooksen to Thai Premier League-side Osotspa M-150 FC comes just weeks after playing for the Thai national team’s U19

and U21 squads. In addition, 18-year-old Phonlawat “Ae” Nanta is joining Chonburi FC – a team that was recently promoted to the TPL. “Helping players go professional was my goal when I moved here,” said Football Director Hannu Tuukanen of YFH, which was founded just

after the 2004 tsunami to help orphaned and disadvantaged boys with a focus on athletics, namely football. “I put the goal that I could help 1 to 2 boys play professional in the future and it seems like my dreams have come true but we keep going and hope that my boys will make more

success in the future.” In addition, Jassada “Arm” Hongsawong, 15, and Nithiwat Boonsing, 16, were called up to the Thailand national U16 squad earlier this year and participated in a three-week camp at German Bundesliga club Schalke 04’s youth academy in October.

YFH’s U13 squad managed to make the finals of the British International School Phuket’s (BISP) International Soccer Sevens competition in their age group in November, though lost in the final. In addition, YFH reached the Singa Cup finals in Singapore, a prestigious annual U18 competition. Despite losing the final to Jakarta’s Onana Elite Football School on penalties, YFH playmaker Nicholas Murphy was named the tournament’s “Most Valuable Player”. “This year has been very good, we did a lot of work with all of our boys, especially U13,” Tuukanen said. “Let’s see what happened for all of them.”

Ronins’ attack gets big boost FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

PH U K E T FC B OL stered their attack last week with the signing of Cameroonian/Belgian striker, Berlin NdebeNlome The 27-year-old finished his 2014 Yamaha League-1 campaign at Ay ut thaya, where he scored 13 goals for the Ancient Warriors, more than the 10 goals from Phuket FC’s top scorer, captain Wasan Natasan, who left the club after the end of the season. Though reports indicate Berlin is from Douala, Cameroon, the Thai Premier League has him down as hailing from Belgium. Either way, Berlin provides an immediate scoring threat for the Ronins. Previously, Berlin played in Portugal (P. Ferreira), England (Portsmouth FC), Spain (Atletico-Monzon), and Belgium (Westerlo) in addition to his stings at Chonburi FC and Sriracha.
