ive Frenchmen of African decent are in police custody while another suspect is at large, wanted for ATM skimming fraud amounting to losses “in the millions”, police said. The men, who have denied all allegations, were paraded to the media Tuesday morning (March 3) at a press conference at Phuket Provincial Police Station, headed by

Phuket Provincial Police Commander, Maj Gen Pachara Boonyasit. The suspects – identified as Kevin Tahiango Theodore Okito 29, the alleged leader of the group, Mel Duval Poaty, 29, Accel Jonathan Poaty Pambou, 26, Samir Maruof, 29, and Jessy Bianvenu Vincence, 33 – were presented to the press along with seized evidence, including 15 fake electronic cards, a notebook computer, flash drive and five passports. Two of the men were arrested at

a Fresh Mart in Kamala, while the other three were nabbed at a rented home in Chalong on February 28, police said. Police said the men were believed to be part of an international skimming gang. Their arrest came after Phuket Police Superintentent Lt Col Prawi Angchuwn received information from the money laundering crime and security department of Siam Commercial Bank that on February 22, a group of dark skinned men

used skimming cards on multiple occasions to withdraw cash from one of the ATMs in front of the Fresh Mart convenience store in Kamala and other locations in Chalong. Investigators and undercover agents staked out the scenes where the men had worked. Police said that the gang divided themselves into two groups to commit the crimes – one group was based at the rented house on Soi Prattana in Chalong and the other at the rented house on Soi Huakwan in Kamala.

Continued from front page. According to police, at 1am on February 28, Kevin and Mel left the house in Kamala and went to Fresh Mart. Kevin took an undisclosed amount of cash out of the machine while Mel was his lookout. When police approached them, both men attempted to flee into a nearby soi, but police were able to apprehend them with skimmer cards in their possession. Police later raided the house in Chalong and arrested the other three suspects, Jonathan, Samir and Jessy, while a fourth man managed to flee the scene. Police seized the rest of the evidence, and said they have notified immigration police to be on the lookout for the other man at large and arrest him upon positive identification. Police clarified that they had photographic evidence of the sixth suspect, but could not obtain a name from any of the other suspects.

A 55-YEAR-OLD GERman man was rushed to hospital Saturday (February 28) after he was hit by a jetski at Paradise Beach, five kilometres from Patong. At 1:30pm, Kusoldharm rescuers were called to the scene where they found the foreigner, Mr Erich Heim, passed out on the beach, with his head bleeding. The team treated him with first aid and immediately took him to Patong Hospital, but he was later transferred to Bangkok Hospital Phuket. A witness at the scene said Mr Heim went for a swim not far from the shore, while his German wife was sunbathing on the beach. The witness said a French tourist, identified by police as Mr Chadd Attardi, 20, who hired the jet-ski went straight into the sea and probably didn’t notice Mr Heim swimming when his jet-ski struck Mr Heim on the head. Mr Attardi was with six friends when they left the jet-ski zone, which only allows them to stay within Patong. They ended up in Paradise Beach in the Tri Trang area, breaking the regulations. Police are waiting for Mr Heim to make a full recovery, before they investigate further.

Rear Admiral Thiensiri Montriwait, Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet Area Command, led the event that brought together 200 people including sailors, staff of FM 92 City Radio and News Cable TV, hotel staff, students, fishermen, beach masseuses and local residents to collect trash along the shore.

totalling 542 rai. Bongkot Suwannadech, City Planning Specialist from the Department of Public

Works and Town & Country Planning, told the meeting held last Tuesday (February 24), “The land readjustment targets

locations close to roads.” There are five main aims of the exercise, she said; impoving connectivity for transport to and from main roads; fixing the problem of urban sprawl; flood protection; enhancement of the landscape and building up proper infrastructure. The readjustment will mean that landowners will lose some land to new roads but, Ms Bongkot said, “When we carried out readjustment in other provinces, the value of most of the land affected rose after the owners got the papers back from us because the land was closer to roads

[and infrastructure].” Owners of land affected in Phuket had been invited to discuss the proposals and although they were generally in favour, they asked that parts of the plan be adjusted. Rakkiet Deedpin, from the same department as Ms Bongkot, went into detail about the two areas that will be tackled first. “We have done the project step by step. We had a land adjustment committee meeting on March 14 last year then another meeting with local people on March 25 last year before issuing a model and target area for Phuket land adjustment, signed by the Governor [Nisit Jansomwong] on August 7 last year.” “The Cherng Talay project covers 321 rai owned by 24 owners who have between them 38 plots. “We chose this location because it is landlocked with no roads connecting to the main road.” He explained that the plan sees roads nine and 12 metres wide being driven into and through the land, and the extension of existing roads. “There are many plots that are still undeveloped so I don’t think there will be much change to the land owners. "We have worked out that the owners will lose around 12.64 per cent of their land.” It was agreed that the plans for both areas will be rewritten to suit the owners’ and other local needs. Other areas of Phuket will go through similar readjustments, all of which is sheduled to be completed in 2023 – in eight years’ time. thephuketnews

Local community fire salvo of complaints against resort

T

he complaint about calls from a village mosque disturbing people’s lives has been rejected by the authorities. But now the villagers have hit back with a salvo of complaints against the Phuket Panwa Beachfront Resort – which they believe was behind the original complaint. Now a committee is to be set up to try to resolve those complaints. The decision to reject the noise complaint came after a protest was held outside the resort by members of the Muslim community of Baan Ao Makham on February 19, in what the protesters say was a reaction to the resort having sent the letter about the noise. Governor Nisit Jansomwong and PM’s Office Inspector Orawan Khumsap announced the decision to set up the committee at a meeting held last Thursday (February 26) after the PM’s Office decided that it would take no action on the complaint. The complaint is believed

to have stated that the speaker system from the mosque plays an Azan (call to prayer) early in the morning and late at night causing a number of complaints about its loudness. After the case was referred back by the PM’s office to Phuket Province, it was decided that the complaint was void. A letter sent to the PM̕s office by Governor Nisit stated, “The complaint alleging Azans were made from 11pm to midnight is untrue as the Muslim principle does not have an Azan or any activity that could make noise during this time. “Although there is an Azan between 5am – 6am it only lasts two to three minutes. “The complainant(s) mention that their lives had been disrupted for a month. However, the complaint acknowledged that the Muslim community has lived there a long time. “Ninety per cent of the Ao Makham community are Muslim and these people have conducted their religious activities in the area for hundreds of years and therefore it was de-

Members of the Ao Makham Muslim community protest outside of the Phuket Panwa Beachfront Resort on February 19. cided the complaint was void.” This decision was relayed to the PM’s Office, which agreed. However, villagers who still believe that the Phuket Panwa Beachfront Resort is the complainant (or one of the complainants), have now filed many counter-complaints about the resort. Naiyana Salika, a member of the Muslim community, explained at the meeting that the Highways Office has asked all villagers to move their houses

back from the border of the main road through the village but not the resort. “All the small houses here have had to move back from the road line already. “Some residents have been affected as they make a living in front of their houses, yet the hotel can put a big sign on an illegal area. “The resort has also selfishly blocked the beach to make it private for guests,” she said. “It has many security guards

monitoring the area. It is public land and belongs to all of us.” She also alleged that waste water from the resort runs out to the beach. “They even drain wastewater into the sea near where villagers live, and it kills all the coral,” she said. She added that along with that, the resort actually makes noise and heat, and the resort̕ s high voltage electric system creates a risk to the local community. “The chiller machines face the community. They make noise and heat 24/7. “The high voltage electrics that the resort operator brought is now located in the village area above some of the houses’ roofs. We are concerned if there is a problem such as a transformer explosion, we will have a problem that is not of our making.” After listening to the complaints, the governor promised the village representatives that a committee, made up of representatives from provincial authorities, Royal Thai Navy Area 3 Command, the Royal

Thai Army and police officers, hotel representatives and village representatives, would be set up to work on the issues. It will also work on making investors and businesses in the area understand about how to live with the local community. “We are peaceful people but we will not surrender if we are insulted, and today we have proved it. “Religion is a very sensitive topic and we have lived here a lot longer than any business operators. “Wherever you have a business you have to respect the local people,” said Narong Kumbaan, Village Chief of Ao Makham Moo 7. “I will also ask the inspector [Ms Orawan] to see if there is a punishment for those who file a spurious complaint.” Ms Orawan said in the meeting that although she could confirm that the resort had not sent the complaint, the name of the complainant cannot be revealed because of the terms of the Official Information Act of 1997.

Hotel manager killed in motorbike accident A 3 5 -Y E A R - O L D FRENCH-Argentinian hotel manager was killed Saturday night (February 28) after he crashed into an electric pole. At 10:25pm, an emergency unit from Kamala Administrative Organisation was called to the scene at the entrance of Ban Kuan in Kamala.

At the scene they found Maximillien Nahuel Grau lying on the ground with serious head injuries. His smashed-up red motorbike appeared to have crashed into the pole. His body was taken to Patong Hospital. Mr Grau was the Resort Manager at The Bell

Pool Villa Resort and was described by his managing director, Antonie Polfliet, as “a very energetic and passionate leader”. Mr Polfliet added, “He was very loved by everyone he came in contact with and always gave them some positive energy. He will be dearly missed by his loved ones.”

‘Police must be ready fror AEC’ Deputy Police Commissioner Nattapat Tuarob reporter3@classactmedia.co.th

hailand ̕ s Deputy Police Commissioner Pol Gen Dr Wuthi Liptapallop has urged Phuket Police to make sure they are ready for the upcoming AEC set to start at the end of this year. Speaking at a meeting Wednesday morning (March 3), Gen Wuthi said that he is concerned about three main points about Phuket polices̕ preparations for the AEC. “I have set three main tasks: 1. Transnational Crime, 2. Drugs and 3. Tourism. I want to see Phuket set up an ASEAN Centre, and the centre here in Phuket must be special as it is a world class destination and Phuket has all the advantages; volunteers, consulates, operations. “Every Police region̕ s headquarter must have their own Asean Centre. Now in Bangkok we are setting up Asean Centre on the 19th floor of the Royal Thai Police Headquarter and I think it will be ready in a few weeks. “I want all the data of Phuket to be included in the Asean Centre, for example, immigration informa-

How many tour guide companies etc. This must be ready and you must be able to answer any questions that I may have to ask,” said Gen Wuthi. When speaking about transnational crime, Gen Wuthi stated that he would like to see Phuket have Tansnational Crime Mapping

similar to that used in Pattaya which tracks down all criminal groups, where they are living and how and why they are living as they do, and also when and why they overstay. “Maj Gen Pachara needs to bring all the police departments together to manage all this information,” he said. He then went to speak about traffic, stating “You may have seen that in the last 10 years there

are more cars on the road, but the ways the roads are constructed has not changed. So a priority for the traffic in Phuket is that you have to re-surface the roads and use strict measures according to the law. “I came to Phuket as a police director of Asean, so you must be ready. “The most important thing for the superintendent of tourist provinces, border provinces, or special

economic zone provinces is that they must be able to speak English. “In the Asean charter, it states in ARTICLE 34 - WORKING LANGUAGE OF ASEAN: The working language of Asean shall be English. “When the next reshuffles take place, if you would like to continue to be in Phuket, your English will be an indicator. “I have specified to all police forces that the Superintendent in tourist provinces, borderline provinces, or special economic zone provinces, must have english language proficiency. I don’t want you to be like a native speaker but ‘you must be able to communicate. So, I want you to be prepared, as at the next reshuffle there might well be a measure to test your English.” Gen Wuthi concluded by saying “I am seriously worried about the tourists safety on some of the unpoliced islands (Koh Racha etc) close to Phuket. However, the Phuket police commander has the legal authority under the Royal Thai Police Act 2554, Section 15, to assign tourist police to be based there if necessary.”

Machines will help cut airport queues T

he Immigration Police Bureau will install immigration clearance machines to cut queues at the country’s main Bangkok airports by mid-2015. Sixteen automated immigration clearance machines will be allotted to Suvarnabhumi airport and be ready to use by July this year. Eight machines, costing a total of roughly B76 million, will be stationed at the departure immigration zone and another eight in the arrival hall, said Choengron Rimphadee, the director of immigration clearance at Suvarnabhumi airport. Don Mueang airport will also receive four machines for its arrival and departure halls by the end of the year. Initially, those eligible for machine-processed entry will only be foreign residents of Thailand who pre-register with the immigration police to use the devices. Pol Lt Col Choengron explained that registration is required as immigration

The apparatuses will hasten immigration clearance, as they require a mere 20 seconds to process each person, while an immigration officer takes twice that, averaging 45 seconds per passport stamp, he said.

More personnel will also be deployed to Suvarnabhumi’s immigration booths to cut the lines during peak hours. It has been k nown to take up to two hours to clear immigration, but officials aim to limit this to 30 minutes, which meets international

standards, he said. Meanwhile, nationals from applicable countries should fill out online applications for the visa-on-arrival prior to landing to do away with the hassle of paper forms, Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said. Bangkok Post

THE NOTORIOUS TAO PUN gambling den in Bang Sue district of Bangkok could be redeveloped as a police public service centre to end the cycle which sees the illegal casino quickly reopening every time it is shut down. Pol Col Seehanat Prayoonrat, secretary-general of the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo), said Monday (March 2) that although his office had formally seized the casino premises, gamblers still managed to sneak in regularly to continue their illegal activities. A joint force of police and soldiers searched the place again late last week. Pol Col Seehanat said he discussed the issue with national police chief Pol Gen Somyot Pumpunmuang, who said he had plans to turn the casino into a police sub-station, where officers would

be deployed to offer public services. Last Friday (February 27) police and soldiers had to force their way through angry locals to reach and break into the three-storey Tao Pun casino, inside a 1,000-square-metre compound on Soi Khao San alley. Authorities found no gamblers there at the time, but found a lot of gambling equipment, including Baccarat tables and a slot machine, as well as eight pistols. Police had also recently raided the Tao Pun gambling den four times, but failed to arrest anyone. The B11 million property is believed to belong to an influential figure, but the land title deed shows a food vendor is the owner. Amlo froze the ownership of the building in early 2013. Almost all are depreciable assets and as such poses a potential burden on the state to maintain them. It is for this reason that the AMLO decided to hold the auctions. The public is also reassured that legal ownership is guaranteed following a successful bid

Vendor stabs officer in Tha Chang BANGKOK̕ S CITY HALL is vowing to carry on with its street clean-up despite a clash between a street vendor and a city inspector which left the official with stab wounds. City inspector Sakol Suansomboon, also known as a tessakit officer, was attempting to clear a pavement on Sunday (March 1) near Tha Chang when he was attacked. Mr Sakol was trying to persuade two people vending illegally on the pavement near Tha Chang and Tha Tian to stop trading there when he was assaulted, said Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) adviser Vichai Sangparpai. While one relented and began packing, the other, Phansak Thanapat, attacked the officer, Mr Vichai said. Mr Phansak, a 57-year-old amulet seller, first hit the officer on the head with a pestle and then stabbed the officer’s left arm twice with a pocket knife, he said. Bystanders moved in to help the officer and took Mr Phansak to the Phra Ratchawang police station. He was charged with assault and with obstructing an officer on duty. Tha Tian and Tha Chang were cleared by City Hall in November last year, the third spot to be cleaned since the campaign began. In December, the BMA said it would begin dismantling Khlong Thom market, a popular spot for cheap electronic goods. Mr Vichai said the episode stemmed from a vendor disgruntled over the clean-up campaign. He said the fight shows that

tessakit officers perform their duty while the vendors are the ones who flout the rules. “No one should live above the law,” he said. The attack would not disrupt Sunday̕s deadline (March 1) for the relocation of unauthorised vendors in Khlong Thom market, Mr Vichai said. After failing to relocate them in December last year, the BMA told all vendors to move out by midnight Sunday. The tessakit officers will press on with inspecting vending operations, Mr Vichai said. He said every officer has been trained for the job. Bangkok Post

AMLO allowed the public to view the items up close again on Tuesday (March 3) before proceeding with the actual auctions which are being held at the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Royal Guards located on Chaengwattana Road in Bangkok.

The displays on Monday drew in several hundred attendees with the luxurious wristwatches attracting the bulk of attention. Many collectors who attended commented that huge sums of money will have to be prepared before the actual bidding because many of the items are extremely expensive and very rare. One antique expert said he was personally interested in almost 100 pieces. The prices for them are acceptable and many items are extremely rare. For example a priceless idol adorned tea-set and golden cabbage Chinaware are highly prized by collectors. Bidders are required to put down a 10 per cent down payment to qualify for bidding. The items that are going under the hammer vary in value from as little as B200 – B500 plates up to items valued in the millions of baht. It is expected that the proceeds from the auction will help bolster the state’s coffers by no less than B50 million. ThaiPBS

Is double-pricing okay?

P

erhaps the most common complaint by foreigners living or staying in Thailand for a long period of time, is in regards to the policy and practice of double-pricing, particularly at national parks. The controversial practice is labeled as “racist” by many “foreigners” who argue that it perpetuates economic discrimination over one group, to the advantage of another group, solely on the basis of race. Unlike double-pricing standards in other countries like the US, where “local” discounts are offered to anyone who can prove residency – irregardless of their skin colour or facial features – in Thailand, the sole “fee-entitlement” factor is one’s race or nationality – whether or not you are Thai. According to the Department of National Parks, having a work permit, permanent

residency or paying income tax does not entitle any nonThai national to the same rights as Thais. This means that all foreigners are obligated to pay entrance fees as much as 10 times more than Thais (B400 vs B40 at some national parks). And while officers at some parks have reportedly been fair in giving “local” discounts to foreigners who can show a work permit, Taxpayers Identification Number (TIN), Thai Driver’s License or even the ability to speak Thai – these have only been the exceptions, not the rule. The Department of National Parks claims that they are not asking foreigners to pay more, but rather, offering discounts to promote domestic travel among Thais, a majority of whom are poorer than foreign tourists and expats. Such discounts have not

been without consequences. Some readers have told us that they refuse to go to any place that charges foreigners more, and recommend against it to others likewise. In our new poll, we want to hear from you, Thai and foreign nationals. How do you feel about double-pricing at national parks in Thailand? The options are: 1.It’s fair. Thais should be able to pay less than foreigners, it’s their country 2.It’s okay, but it shouldn’t be 5-10 times more for foreigners 3.Tourists should pay more, but expats should pay the same as Thais (residency not race) 4.I don’t agree with the racist practice at all. Everyone should pay the same rate. Have your say. Click the “Poll” icon on the top of our home page at thephuketnews. com. Poll ends on March 20.

HAVE YOUR SAY For better or worse Re: New multilingual signs, flyers and tourist info centres to clarify Phuket beach rules Good rules, hopefully in a few years from now, with a much increased number of beach users we will not be invaded by chairs and pre-emption of the beach by businesses Natural beaches will attract more tourists Yes good beaches So basically anyone who needs to sit on a chair on the beach is not welcome on the so called ‘public’ beach? And if you want to have sun protection by way of umbrella you are herded to 10% of the beach with all the other people who don’t want skin cancer. And this is all because Authorities cannot control illegal beach vendors. It’s ludicrous. Love Patong I count 5 restaurants with tables and chairs on Kamala Beach. I wonder how these establishments don’t break the “No Business On The Beach” rules? Pinot I am so disappointed with the beach events of Patong and

Phuket! We love Patong and tell me how this will improve things? I have had a broken back and now I cannot enjoy the beach because of no chairs, and being a westerner, we are unable to take the full rays of the sun! Is the emergency department prepared to handle all the sun stroke victims? We have been to Patong several time and planned on making it an annual vacation...but now we need to revisit that decision and Bali is looking much more enticing. This is by no means a decision we want to make but is being forced on us. Please reconsider your actions and we will reconsider where we travel! We love the Thai People and the services Patong Beach offered! Wawyne Krejci

The real issue on beaches

Re: German man hit by jetski at Paradise Beach in Phuket Let’s all just face the facts... this isn’t going to stop, no matter what happens, just chalk it up to another threat to your safety when living or vacationing in Phuket. I was just at Surin Beach, and the idiots from Laem Singh were zipping in

and out of Surin, and I must say, I was concerned for my safety. These aren’t small machines, but very large and very fast and powerful, and the idiots renting them have no concern about following any kind of rules... not that there are any anyway. Why do they feel the need to come into Surin and do circles and zigzags so close to the shore? I just got out of the water, and I sat under the trees trying to read, but all I could notice was the constant whining noise of the stinking jetskis...fouling the nice quiet beach environment for everyone. I just left, and I don’t know where I can escape these miserable things. Ed Sanders How many more innocent swimmers or novice tourist riding these powerful machines need to be injured or killed by Jet-skis? Ban them for good! I have seen so many near misses? Bjay

HK lawmakers hand themselves in to police H

ong Kong pro-democracy lawmakers handed themselves in to police Monday (March 2) over their involvement in mass protests for free elections, the latest step in a widespread investigation which has been accused of intimidation. Police have vowed to investigate the “principal instigators” of the street blockades which ended in December when rally camps were cleared. A number of protest leaders have been arrested and released without charge, in a controversial procedure which some say is harassment. Albert Ho and Helena Wong, both of the Democratic Party, turned themselves in at Wan Chai police headquarters on Monday morning after being requested to attend. Each of them were holding a small yellow paper umbrella – the symbol of the democracy movement – as supporters shouted: “We want universal suffrage.” “We Hongkongers who have tried to fight for true democracy are not the ones who have done something wrong...it is the ridiculous Hong Kong and Chinese govern-

The street protests which began in September and lasted for more than two months were sparked after Beijing said that candidates for the 2017 vote for Hong Kong’s

next leader would be vetted by a loyalist committee. Campaigners dismiss that as “fake democracy”, but Hong Kong’s leadership says that any public vote must take place within Beijing’s framework and has granted no concessions over the vote.

Prominent student leaders including the teenage face of the protests, Joshua Wong, have already been through the police procedure, which saw them formally arrested and questioned when they handed themselves in, then released without charge hours later.

Police said they reserved the right to prosecute those who were released. Both Chow and Wong questioned the process, saying police should charge them if they had the evidence. “It engenders a sense of uncertainty and they are using that, in my view, as a method of control,” said Michael Vidler, the lawyer representing Joshua Wong, after the teenager was released. “These pre-arranged arrests are a waste of resources and money,” former lawmaker Audrey Eu, who also turned herself in Monday afternoon, told supporters. “The police are trying to intimidate Hong Kong people,” she added, saying that she was being brought in for inciting and organising an unauthorised assembly. Former lawmaker and veteran campaigner Martin Lee also handed himself in Monday morning to shouts of “Go, Martin, go” from supporters. P ro - democracy law ma ker Charles Mok was due to attend the police station later Monday. Bangkok Post

A rare white elephant seen here at Naypyidaw’s Uppatasanti Pagoda by Peerapat Wimolrungkarat.

Myanmar finds rare white elephant A RARE WHITE ELephant has been captured in Myanmar, state media said on Monday (March 2), a creature traditionally seen as a sign of political good fortune in a country edging towards breakthrough national elections. The pink-tinged pachyderm, which was caught in a forest reserve in the Irrawaddy Delta area of Pathein, is the ninth white elephant to be held in captivity in the former juntarun country, according to a report in the Global New Light of Myanmar. The female elephant is thought to be about sevenyears-old, is around 190cm tall and has “pearl colour eyes”. Despite their name, the revered creatures are not actually white but have certain distinctive features including a pinkish complexion. White elephants have historically been treasured by Myanmar’s kings and leaders who saw them as a “symbol of the country’s sovereignty,” according to historian Thant Myint-U. They have been found at opportune moments for the country, which has been ruled by a quasi-civilian government since 2011.

The discovery of a white elephant just before elections in 2010 was hailed by state media as the mark of a successful “democratic transition”, despite widespread criticism of the polls with allegations of cheating and the absence of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Myanmar is currently preparing for another general election, a key test of the country’s political reforms and one that is likely to see significant wins for Suu Kyi’s party. The country’s longfeared army is also currently enjoying a rare public relations boost as it battles ethnic Chinese rebels in the northeastern borderlands. The fighting has been framed by state media as a defence of sovereignty, but it has also intensified doubts over government efforts to reach a nationwide ceasefire deal – a cornerstone of the reform agenda. It is not clear where the latest elephant will be held, although the majority of Myanmar’s white elephants are kept in an enclosure in the capital Naypyidaw. Myanmar’s wild populations of endangered Asian elephants are threatened by poaching and habitat loss due to logging. AFP

Indonesia retrieves last of crashed AirAsia jet fuselage I

ndonesia has retrieved the final major part of the fuselage of the AirAsia jet that crashed into the Java Sea in December, killing all 162 people on board, officials said Saturday (February 28). The mangled wreckage, the largest part of the plane retrieved, was pulled from the sea Friday (February 27) and loaded onto a ship, national search and rescue chief Bambang Soelistyo said. “We have retrieved on Friday the last and large part of the AirAsia fuselage with a wing still intact,” Soelistyo said. No bodies were found during the course of the operation. Soelistyo said in a press conference Saturday that authorities will decide on a final date for the salvage operation after a meeting with the victims’ families scheduled for next week.

Some 103 bodies have been recovered since the plane went down in stormy weather while flying from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, search and rescue coordinator S.B. Supriyadi said. Meanwhile, the intensive underwater hunt for missing plane MH370 has so far turned up just a few shipping containers – and no sign of the jet, the head of the Australian agency leading the search said on Tuesday (March 3). Chief commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Martin Dolan said that while several manmade items – mostly shipping containers – have been detected during a sonar search, they had found nothing resembling debris from the Malaysia Airlines jet. Australian and Malaysian authorities have nar-

rowed the search area to a vast 60,000 square kilometre zone – and they have so far scoured around 40 per cent of it, Dolan said. The ATSB expects the priority area search to be completed in May, but Dolan said it was too soon to say if the hunt could extend beyond then when weather conditions in the remote region worsen. “The decision about what’s next, which is hypothetical at this stage, is one for governments,” Dolan said. “From our point of view... we’ve only searched 40 percent of it, and our focus is on searching the rest of that area and we expect to find the aircraft there. We just can’t guarantee it will happen.” The commissioner said search officials have categorised objects they found into three levels – with level one classed as items that have “at

least some characteristics of an aircraft debris field”. So far the search has turned up eight “level twos” and more that 100 “level threes”, he said. “The sorts of things we’re tending to pick up are shipping containers,” Dolan said, which are defined as level twos, while level threes are usually geological features. Three of the four search vessels – Fugro Equator, Fugro Discovery and GO Phoenix – are using sophisticated sonar systems to scan the complex terrain that plunges to depths of 4,000 metres. The Fugro Supporter, has an autonomous underwater vehicle that moves over the ocean floor more slowly. The search is jointly funded by Australia and Malaysia, with some Aus$120 million (US$93 million) pledged so far. Bangkok Post

Bill Gates ‘is still richest in world’

illionaire philanthropist Bill Gates kept his spot as the world’s richest man, a rank he has held for 16 of the past 21 years, Forbes magazine said on Monday (March 2). The Microsoft co-founder’s fortune increased US$3.2 billion since last year to US$79.2 billion, the business magazine said, despite a US$1.5 billion gift of Microsoft shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in November. Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim held onto second place thanks to his US$77.1 billion, ahead of American investor Warren Buffett, with US$72.7 billion. The so-called Oracle of Omaha was the biggest gainer of the Forbes list this year, climbing $14.5 billion from last year riding on the rising share price of his Berkshire Hathaway. In fourth was Amancio Ortega, founder of the Inditex fashion group that includes Zara clothing retail shops. He

Two HIV strains tracked to gorillas TWO OF FOUR STRAINS of the HIV virus that can cause Aids come from gorillas in Cameroon, an international team of scientists reported in studies published on Monday (March 2) in the US. The new information means that researchers now know the origins of all strains of the HIV virus that occur in people. HIV has four strains. Known as Groups M, N, O and P, each one had its own origin – leaping from ape to man on at least four separate occasions. Groups M and N were known to have come from

chimpanzees in Cameroon. But until now the origin of the O and P strains were unknown. Results of the study led by Martine Peeters, a virologist at France’s Research and Development Institute appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Group M is the most widespread, behind the greatest part of the epidemic, with more than 40 million people currently infected around the world. Group N has been detected in only 10 people so far, and Group P in just two. Group O has been found in central and western Africa, infecting about

100,000 people. The breakthrough was made possible thanks to genetic samples from chimpanzees and gorillas from Cameroon, Gabon, Uganda and the Congo. “From this study and others that our team has conducted in the past it has become clear that both chimpanzees and gorillas harbor viruses that are capable of crossing the species barrier to humans and have the potential to cause major disease outbreaks,” Peeters said. “Understanding emerging disease origins is critical to gauge future human infection risks,” she added. A RARE SEA CREATURE DESCRIBED AS AN “ALIEN of the deep” has been found off Australia’s coast and delivered to a museum which on Tuesday (March 3) showed off its fleshy snout, nail-like teeth and flabby pink body. The prehistoric-looking goblin sharks live on deep sea bottoms and little is known about their lives. “It’s pretty impressive. It’s not hideous, it’s beautiful,” said the Australian Museum’s fish collection manager Mark McGrouther, who described its teeth as looking like “little daggers”. McGrouther said he was “thrilled” to handle the shark, which is found in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. The species, is thought to be a living fossil dating back some 125 million years. McGrouther says he is fascinated by the animal’s jaw mechanism, which shoots forward – much like the creature in the movie Alien – when it detects prey and then retracts under its fleshy, spade-shaped snout. “It will be sweeping over the bottom and when it detects a small fish, or a crab or a squid it will shoot those jaws out – Wham! – and just wolf it down whole.” AFP

AirAsia back in profit in Thailand in Q4 2014 ASIA AVIATION PLC (AAV), parent company of low cost carrier Thai AirAsia, has announced that it made a profit of B331 million last year on the back of a strong performance in the final quarter that offset losses in the first nine months. But the profit was equivalent to just 17 per cent of the B1.9 billion profit AAV made in 2013 and was just 1.3 per cent of the year’s revenue of B25.36 billion. Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of both AAV and Thai AirAsia, explained that in 2014 tourism was heavily affected by overall factors, “necessitating harder work from the company in terms of capital management and finding new revenue streams”. “Over the past year, Thai AirAsia was made to adapt its business plan to the circumstances that arose. “The carrier completed its fleet of 40 Airbus A320 aircraft by year-end, added three new routes (Bangkok-Sakon Nakhon, Chiang Mai-Surat Thani and Krabi-Guangzhou) and increased flight frequency on two popular routes (Chiang Mai-Krabi and Bangkok-Siem Reap). “While the average load factor of 80pc was down 3 points from 2013, the total amount of passengers carried was 12.2 million people, 16pc more than in 2013” Mr. Tassapon explained. For 2015, Mr Tassapon said he was certain that AAV will return to targeted growth as the overall political and tourism situation has improved. The airline is scheduled to receive five new aircraft in 2015 and has launched new domestic routes between Bangkok and Nan, Loei and Roi Et. It set its 2015 passenger target at 14.5 million people with a load factor of 83pc. Bangkok Post

Central in renewed hunt for high-end assets RETAIL CONGLOMERate Central Group will spend B40 billion this year to expand its domestic business and acquire a second luxury department store in Europe. Of the total, B30 billion baht will be used to expand local operations and B10 billion for investment abroad, mainly in Europe. Funds will come from cash flow, bank loans and other financial alternatives, the company says. The group is in talks to acquire a luxury department store in Europe that is more than 60 years old, deputy chief executive Prin Chirathivat said on February 23, adding that a deal could be settled this year. The executive did not disclose the new investment destination for Central in Europe but mentioned that France and Britain were in the business pipeline, as both countries are popular tourist destinations. Central already owns the Rinascente department store in Milan, which it acquired in 2011 for 260 million euros

La Rinascente in Milan. Central plans to open a new branch of the Italian icon in the heart of Rome. (about B11 billion at that time). “We’ll continue investing and expanding in Europe even though the economy there is not good, because the investment costs will probably be lower,” Mr Prin said. “Whenever the economy goes down, the number of tourists will increase and eventually benefit us,” he pointed out. Apart from plans to buy another European luxury department store, the group is interested in acquiring another electrical appliance chain in

Vietnam to strengthen its presence in that country, where the group has already opened two Robinson Department Stores and bought Vietnamese appliance chain Nguyen Kim through its Power Buy subsidiary. Chief executive Tos Chirathivat said Central would also open a new La Rinascente in the heart of Rome in 2017 and reintroduce Illum Department Store, now under renovation, in Copenhagen this year. The group is also expanding

its hotel business in Europe, with a focus on top tourist destinations such as London and Paris. It may also close its Central Department Store in Chendu, China, where, it is felt, competition is too difficult. At home, Mr Tos said the group would open new shopping malls and lifestyle centres in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Rayong, Buri Ram and Mae Sot. Central will add nine new hotels with a combined 1,800 rooms in Thailand and abroad, in addition to opening 300 new food outlets. “This will be a challenging year for us due to greater uncertainty from the international political and foreign affairs situation,” Mr Tos said. But he said he expects an improvement in the retail market this year thanks to growing tourism and domestic stability in addition to increasing border trade. C e nt r a l h a s a l r e a d y branched out into border provinces such as Chiang Rai, which is a gateway to

China with links to Laos and Myanmar. Chiang Rai boasts potential to become the northern region’s next major trade hub, while Mukdahan is well placed for outreach to Savannakhet province in Laos, part of Thailand’s east-west economic route for which logistical infrastructure is already in place. Udon Thani is responding to demand from Laotian consumers as well. “We’re setting out an aggressive plan to attract customers from Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia to use our services this year,” Mr Tos said. Apart from retail sales at brick-and-mortar stores, Central has diversified into online retail sales. The online shopping platform has been well received by shoppers, Mr Tos said. He anticipates sales of B287 billion this year, up 14.8 per cent from last year’s B250 billion, which itself was a 6.6 per cent rise from 2013. Bangkok Post

THE BIG LIST Origins of the mundane We do these things everyday, without skipping a beat most of the time. It’s good to know that several goodwill gestures and the seemingly innocent started out as something that is not.

Handshake: It only takes seconds and is the standard greeting, deal-sealer, and act of forgiveness. But in the good ol’ Roman days, the handshake extended to the elbow and was a way for two parties to check if the other had a weapon hidden under their sleeve. It wasn’t until medieval Europeans that we started to clasp hands and shake, mostly to see if any smaller weapons would fall out. The reason we usually use our right hand? Well, the left hand was commonly used as a way to clean one’s self after sitting on the toilet. Thank you hand sanitiser, thank you so much. Yawning/sneezing: Ever wonder why we cover our mouths during yawns /sneezes and say “God bless you”? In medieval Europe, the bubonic plague spread like wildfire and covering one’s mouth during a sneeze was not only proper, but necessary to help limit the spread of the disease. The saying began when Pope Gregory instructed people to start blessing all who sneezed. Covering our mouths during a yawn was very different in the Muslim and Indian worlds: people believed that a yawn invited satanic spirits into the body and covering your mouth was a surefire way to block it. Driving on the left, then right side of the road: Again, we look back to Rome as the forefather of left hand driving. The reason? It was easier to kill passersby that were hostile or threatening your life. Most people during that time were right-handed and it was easier to whip out your dagger/ sword/trident on your right. The reason for the switch back to the right-side? Guns. Horseback riders would hide their firearms on their left hand side and could easily steer with their right. The right-side change was further solidified by Napoleon and Adolf Hitler who preferred to use the rightside of the road for this reason.

Llamas go on the lam in US, Twitter explodes A pair of sprightly llamas jigged their way to immediate social media stardom last Thursday (February 26) after they led dozens of US police a merry dance on the bemused streets of Phoenix, Arizona. The duo, one white and the other black, had the eyes of the world on them as American media transmitted live footage from the air of them darting across busy roads and parking lots in their brazen – and for an hour successful – attempt at evading capture. Their run for freedom, after numerous hapless attempts at capture by police and members of the public

failed, finally ended when first the black one was lassoed and taken in, followed soon after by the companion, when it was cornered and gave up the game.

Twitter lit up after their heroics, with #whitellama, #llamas, #teamllama and ##llamadrama all trending. Disney joined in the fun, tweeting a cartoon picture of

a defiant-looking llama with the words, “Llama drama.” Quick-thinking Twitter users launched a spoof account on behalf of the llamas, @SunCityLlamas, tweeting: “Wow. We’re famous.” The llamas escaped after a rancher brought them to an assisted living facility to visit an ex-llama rancher as a form of animal therapy, Lieutenant Brandon Jones, of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, told local media. Jones said the animals were spooked when the door of the trailer that was transporting them to the site opened. There were actually three llamas in the trailer, but only two ran for it. AFP

Stolen car forces NASCAR team out of race TRAVIS KVAPIL NEVER imagined his race weekend would end before it started because his car would be stolen from a hotel parking lot, but that’s exactly what happened last Friday (February 27). The 38-year-old American, never better than 23rd in 267 races over a decade in the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) series, issued a plea for help over Twitter after thieves drove off a truck and the trailer that contained his

Sprint Cup Series race car. “Wow. Anyone near Atlanta find my stolen Cup car let me know! Unreal,” Kvapil

tweeted. “I bet when whoever has it opens the trailer and is going to be like ‘oh snap.’” Because the team does not

own a second car, it was forced to withdraw from Sunday’s (March 1) QuikTrip 500. Kvapil posted a photo of the black truck and white trailer as well as the orange and blue number 44 car inside the trailer, saying, “Here it is......New Jersey plates.” Kvapil’s Team Xtreme Racing was staying at the Drury Inn about 16 miles north of Atlanta Motor Speedway. “This is a big setback for this little team,” Kvapil said. Woman Spills Screws To Boost Tyre Repair Business A 36-YEAR-OLD WOMAN has been arrested for allegedly scattering screws on a main road in Hua Hin in an effort to bring more business to her husband’s tyre repair shop. After receiving regular complaints about popped tyres since January, police took to the streets as undercover garbage men and spotted a woman drive by on a motorcycle and spill screws on Phra Pokkhlao Road, which leads to Hua

Male adulthood: In several countries, adulthood is conclusively reached when a man turns 21. Of course, there are several exceptions to this in the modern era, but during the Middle Ages this age was set aside as special for one, maybe two reason: armour. A knight was not expected to fully carry the weight of a steel vest until they reached 21, when there was no doubt he could. In addition, Europeans at the time had high regard for the number 7 since it was connected to Aristotelian Greek philosophy. Boys became pages at age 7, squires at age 14, and knights at 21. Weddings: Go anywhere in the world, and there is a crazy backstory to wedding traditions. Dowries aside, weddings have been conducted in the name of anything but love for thousands of years. The Germanic Goths and the Mongols were known for kidnapping their ‘wives’, which included their best man – who was usually an accomplice. Once the ‘bride’ and groom were together, the best man became a bodyguard in case a counter-kidnapping ensued. In ancient Rome, bridesmaids would dress the same as the bride in order to confuse evil spirits and used them as bait, which may have led to the tradition of hosting grand weddings. That, and everyone likes to party.

According to police, Kesarin said her husband’s tyre business had fallen on hard times, and that the screws were an effort to bring in more customers. Police have charged Kesarin with damaging property, and urged other motorists affected by the screws to come forward and press charges. KhaosodEnglish.

‘King Kazu’ to play on in J-League aged 48 TWINKLE-TOED FORMER Japan striker Kazuyoshi Miura insisted he had no plans to retire as he turned 48 last week, ahead of his 30th year as a professional footballer. Dressed in a wine-red suit as he celebrated his birthday with a giant cake, he told local media: “This is the (Chinese) year of the goat and I was born under that zodiac sign, so I wanted to ring in my 30th

season with a bit of colour. “I’m not a pensioner yet, you know.” Though the pin-up looks have been replaced by a few tell-tale wrinkles, “King Kazu” will again lace up his boots for Japanese second division club Yokohama FC despite making only a couple of appearances last year and closing in on his half-century AFP

It took the Italian 25 minutes to “reel” the beast in for a photo. arch 8 marks International Women’s Day and we proudly present a few role models who have been dedicating their life to deserving causes and have a strong will to develop and enhance society. Sumethaya “Mae (Mother) May” Prompat is the mother of ten non-biological children. She has been working in the SOS Children Village for the last three years, and despite her only being a member of staff, she has sacrificed and given just as much as any mother would. “Working to take care of the people around me has been my dream job since the beginning,” said Ms Sumethaya. “I had two choices, either taking care of the elderly or children. But when I had the opportunity to visit the SOS village in Had Yai, Songkhla, my hometown, I decided to work for them. I saw the mothers and I wanted to be involved and be someone who takes care of these children and see them grow up and accomplish great things in life.” She said it was very hard at the beginning. She was the “Na” (Aunt) who helps whenever the mothers of all 12 houses are not available. “I had to train how to take care of the children as they are in my care from when a new born baby right until they’re a teenager. During that time, I had to adapt to all the children’s different personalities from each house.” After Ms Sumathya completed all the training, she become a Mother of House 1, responsible for looking after 10 children, all different ages from various

You would think it was a tough job mothering several children; but not for Ms Sumathya, to her it was natural. “I do everything just as a mother should. I stay with them 24/7. I sleep next to them, wake up with them and guide and teach them in life.” Two children of of House 1 have left the house already. One has gone to study in Huachiew Chalermprakiet University in Bangkok, while the other was sent to the teenage house for boys. Despite their absence in the house, they never forget to check in and visit their mother. The remaining eight children are studying in different schools around Phuket, including both private and government schools. “If you love what you do, you will never feel tired of it,” added the Mother. Aside from the many Thai women who have devoted themselves to others,

80-year-old Adrienne Irene Tusoni from Switzerland continues to be one of the most respectful ladies in Phuket. She has lived here for more than 40 years and she dedicates her time helping local communities. At the dear age of 80, Mrs Tusoni is still working for charity and foundations, especially with the Lions Club Phuket. She spends the rest of her time with her lovely Thai family. “I moved here in 1973 and I initially met the family because I was renting land for business. They are very nice people and we are so close, they are like family,” she recalled. “I joined the Phuket International Women’s Club right at the beginning, which led me to meet members from the Lions Club. They gave me the wonderful opportunity to be the first Lioness on the island. We met in Phang Nga where we all went to help the victims from the

tragic explosion in Thung Maprao. “I also helped the French Red Cross foundation after the tsunami, by helping them buy boats and basic utilities for the victims – especially for the fishermen in Khao Lak.” Mrs Tusoni, who speaks fluent Thai, became a Buddhist and she spends her peaceful retirement time with her Thai son who lives next door in Rawai. When asked if she wanted to go back to her mother land or somewhere else where her son, niece or sisters live, her answer was simple: “No”. “I like to be with Thai people. Sometimes I even think I am more Thai than a foreigner! I like to stay here, help and see the development of the community, especially the children.” “The activities I do with the club have always interested me. We have a ‘Sight First Project’ which involves us going to various schools and giving them an eye sight measurement service, and give away proper glasses. “There is also a PEACE poster activity. There is an international competition about this yearly and I am always impressed how the children have the inspired ability to think of the word ‘peace’ and be able to express that in their paintings.” Apart from the activities mentioned above, Mrs Tusoni said she loves the “Contest on the Knowledge of the Royal Encyclopedia” which teaches children about a wide range of knowledge. “I like to work with charity as I can do more things with people. We, together, can help to support the community.”

No smoking, booze on the beach QUESTIONS & ANSWERS The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

Question:

Dear Phuket News: I’ve been hearing a bunch of rumours that the government has just made a new ban on eating, smoking and drinking alcohol at the beaches. Tell me it’s not true?! If so, it’s really bad news, especially for tourism and the economy. Just like thousands of others, I’ve been smoking, drinking and eating on the beaches here in Phuket forever, and never had a problem. When I’m on holiday, nothing complements the sun setting into the ocean better than slurping down a few Changs with my som tam and topped up with a ciggy as I enjoy the tide crashing onto the rocks... Now what am I supposed to do? Okay, banning umbrellas is one thing, but now food, cigarettes and beer – enough is enough! How can they just make up new laws like this without warning? Do they want to scare all the expats and tourists away? The way things are going here, I may just have to find a new vacation spot, maybe Bali or Vietnam. – Bangla Leroy

Answer:

Dear Bangla Leroy: Thank you for your questions. Lately, we’ve received many similar questions and comments from other readers confused about the new beach order, and we feel that communication of the laws and regulations has been clumsy at best, especially from other media, who seemed to have caused more unnecessary confusion instead of clarity. In any case, we are happy to clear this matter up for you and all other tourists and expats who still don’t get it. First and foremost, the government did not just make up new bans for smoking and drinking on Phuket’s beaches. In fact, restrictions on consuming these two types of products in all public places in Thailand have been in place for quite some time, even if the laws were not always enforced in the past. In regards to food, as we reported on our front page a few weeks back (Volume V, No 8, February 20-26, 2015), the act of eating has not been banned, despite other media reporting this. But what is restricted by the Public Health Act is the selling of food and disposing of food garbage in public, which has been a problem in Phuket. Thus, authorities have asked for cooperation for people not to bring large meals (and thus rubbish), but small snacks and other waste-free foods will be tolerated. Please read our original story for full details and references to the relevant laws on food in public.

Smoking Restrictions

As for the legislation on smoking and drinking, there are a few laws and public notices to be concerned with. First, for smoking in public, The Non-Smokers Health Protection Act, B.E. 2535 (1992) governs smoking in public, and it defines a “Public place” as “a place or any vehicle where the public is entitled to enter.” All beaches in Thailand are public places. As for the actual restriction on smoking in public, we must look to the

Ministry of Public Health Notice (Volume 19) of 2010. The notice includes two categories of restricted places. The first category are places where smoking is outright prohibited and includes: 1. Public Health clinics and hospitals, steam-rooms, herbal saunas, spas and Thai massage parlours 2. Primary and secondary educational facilities 3. Places of benefit to the general public, including private places such as factories, offices and markets 4. Inside vehicles and public transport vehicles including taxis and buses 5. Religious sites The second category includes places that smoking is prohibited but may be allowed in a designated smoking section, as follows: 1. Any government or state agency office or facility 2. Post-secondary educational institution or facility 3. Petrol service station 4. International airport According to the announcement, designated smoking areas must not be in any kind of building or structure (with the exception of international airports); must not be located at an entrance or exit; must be clearly marked (with a sign), hidden from view, and must not disturb or irritate any other person whatsoever. Smoking in a non-smoking area carries a fine of B2,000; Landlords or tenants who fail to place signs in non-smoking and smoking areas also face a fine of B2,000; while landlords or tenants who fail to establish non-smoking and smoking areas in accordance with the announcement face a fine of up to B20,000.

Booze Controls

As for the relevant law on alcohol, we look to the Alcoholic Beverages Control Act of 2551 (2008), which governs all aspects of the substance in the Kingdom. Regarding public spaces (including the beaches), the relevant sections are 27, 31, 39 and 42. Section 27 covers the places you can’t sell alcohol as follows: 1. Temples or places of religious services 2. Public hospitals, clinics ... and drug stores .... 3. Public offices, save shopping or club sites .... 4. Dormitories .... 5. Education institutes .... 6. Petrol stations ... and shops within their precincts 7. Parks provided by the State for recreation of the general public 8. Other places determined by the Minister [of Public Health], with the approval of the Commission And Section 31 outlines the places you can’t consume alcohol: 1. Temples or places of religious services, (except when part of a religious service) 2. Public hospitals and clinics 3. Public offices, save the sites of private residences, clubs or ceremonious parties 4. Education institutes (except at the sites of private residences, clubs or ceremonious parties or the

@thephuketnews

education institutes where the studying of alcoholic beverage mixture takes place and which are licensed according to the law on national education 5. Petrol stations 6. Parks provided by the state for recreation of the general public 7. Other places determined by the Minister [of Public Health] upon advice of the Commission Finally, Section 39 and 42 state that violating Section 27 and 31 carry imprisonment of up to 6 months in jail, a fine of up to B10,000, or both fine and jail. In answer to your question about whether the government wants to scare away tourists – it’s actually the opposite. Their goal is to attract more tourists, especially the “quality” segment. This is why they are cleaning up the beaches, and starting to get serious about enforcing long-established laws. They want to improve Thailand’s image and reputation, from being a lawless, wild country where anything and everything goes, to one of being a nice and orderly destination where everyone can feel safe knowing that law is respected. If the only thing you have appreciated about Thailand is smoking and drinking on the beach, then perhaps it is time for a change of scenery for you? Let us know how things go. – Editor Do you have a burning Phuket question that needs to be answered? Email us on editor@classactmedia. co.th with “Q&A” in the subject field.

Muddy fun

Playing and learning on first day back in Primary

B

ritish International School Phuket have brought in new playground equipment in order to make playtimes in primary as stimulating and creative as possible. They believe that this will have a positive impact not only during playtimes but also on the day’s classroom learning. The first instalment saw the kids using their turn-taking, problemsolving and agility skills to take on the new spider-web climbing frame. It was extremely popular but the rules agreed in the morning’s assembly ensured the kids were safe, sensible and most-of-all team players. They waited patiently and took care to help each other to climb. The BISP PTA also updated the range of play equipment by filling crates with musical instruments, art stuff, dress-up and sand-toys. They enjoyed watching the kids collaborate, take turns and be creative with the new resources. BISP request that if the children play with the equipment they tidy it up and don’t leave toys all over the playground. For more information, contact Helen Muñoz: hmunoz@bisphuket.ac.th

f there’s just one muddy puddle in the middle of a dry field, a kid will find it. And play. And squish. And create with mud until their hearts are content. Why? Why not! The sensation of having a ball of clay in one’s hands is a tactile experience, a moment full of potential, perhaps even sensual – remember Ghost? As it moves, changes, reshapes and reforms, there are no boundaries, no right, no wrong, just creative freedom. Fling those self-imposed pressures of “I’m not creative” to the side, grab a lump of clay and just hold it. Remember those moments as a kid, sitting in a muddy puddle creating little people,

houses and magical lands made of mud. Allow your instinct for play to return and suddenly, sitting before you will be something wonderful. Probably not perfect. Not finished. But that’s the real joy, there’s always more clay, more opportunities to return to the mud puddle and continue the “play”. Gestalt therapy: live now HEALTH MATTERS

Anna Ganotskaya anna@santosaphuket.com

“I do my thing and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations. And you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am I. And if by chance we find each other, it’s beautiful, if not, it can’t be helped.” Fritz Perls

any people who first come to Phuket find it a dreamer’s paradise that will last forever, and they decide to move here. Some people stay for a few years, some make it their home. Everyone who stays eventually goes through the long adaptation and integration process. When the veil of charm has fallen we start to recognise things that are far from perfect in the land of smiles. We notice things that we believe to be much better in our home countries. Then we try to face and adapt to the reality. Or we start to pull on our own perception to this reality and refuse to accept things. Some people find their place in the sun: open a business, find an interesting job or are simply satisfied with spending time in the sun without desiring anything else. But not everyone is getting what they want by changing location. Many, after being in the sun for a while, start to realise that problems that they were running from are not melted by the tropical heat. The scenery has changed but the same questions remains: who am I? Why am I here? What should I do with my life? The truth is: you cannot run from yourself. If the idea of living among beautiful beaches is no longer appealing to you, it is probably time to look inside of yourself and sort things out: what really does not

serve me anymore? One of the ways to deal with life dissatisfaction is Gestalt Therapy. It is a psychotherapeutic approach that was developed by Fritz Perls and its main principals focus upon the individual’s experience and his consciousness of the present moment, the environmental and social contexts of a person’s life as well as his emotions and feelings and looking at the person as a whole. Gestalt Therapy acts on the principle that ‘we are the only ones responsible for what is happening in our lives.’ Most of these people who decided to live in a foreign country can prove that it was their perceived and voluntary choice. So, if we all know that everything depends on us, then why is it that sometimes we find ourselves not doing what we want, socialising with the wrong people and going to places we don’t want to be? Stop and think: do you like what you are doing in your life now? Would you like to remember the feeling that everything in your life is in your hands? Another important thing about Gestalt Therapy is focusing on the present moment. Unlike a psychoanalyst who will ask you questions about the past or a specialist in cognitive psychotherapy who will focus your attention on the future, gestalt therapists will look at the present. Gestalt Therapy gives importance to what is happening to you here and now and not what already happened or might happen tomorrow. Only the present is real and truthful. Memories and plans can change with time. Another hallmark of Gestalt Therapy is focusing attention on feelings and body sensations. Our body is not separable from thoughts and feelings even if we refuse to acknowledge it. Our brain tends to seek sophisticated ways to explain everything by coming up with very rational stories when sensations in the body recognise our truth. Redness, shortness of breath, sweating, clenched fists and cheekbones are real physical manifestations of feelings such as love, anger, fear and others. Some people have developed their brain in this direction so much so they can’t feel their own feelings anymore. That person will be able to share their opinion on a number of things but will have trouble with describing their feelings. Our conclusions are not always based on proven facts, for example the

body can be a great indicator of what is happening with the person. If my body is warm and relaxed it means I feel safe and comfortable. If my body is tensed it means that there is something inside or outside that causes this tension. To recognise what exactly is bothering me however, is not always easy. One more feature of Gestalt Therapy is the contact with a therapist. The way that the client and therapist communicate with each other can tell the therapist a lot about how the client communicates with other people. In the presence of an attentive listener a person will express the same reactions to situations that they would make in real life. Analysing your own reactions, you can expand your perspective on situations, on other people and yourself. Realise that you always have a choice on how to react on things. Awareness gives more freedom. So, Gestalt Therapy is effective with issues such as - Relationships between partners, parents and children, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and other people. - Feeling of loneliness - Inner conflicts: I want, but I can’t; I can, but I don’t want to but I have to; I want to but I don’t see the way how to do it…etc. - Making choices; how to behave in difficult situations - Fears and intrusive thoughts and desires - Feeling miserable and many others Often psychological issues appear through physical pain or illnesses that doctors fail to diagnose. That could be a sign to see a specialist that helps to heal not the body but the soul. When life circumstances change we need to find a way to adapt to these new conditions. The upside of yoga Kim White kim@mindbodyyogasystem.com

..blissfully prastise upward facing dog with the morning sun shing down on our fortunate faces.

H

i and welcome again to another yoga asana in the pursuit of a healthier and happier life. This month we are looking at Urdhva Mukha Svanasana also known as upward facing dog. I love the bodylines of this asana, it is such a sleek, strong looking pose. The upward and open nature of the head and chest is a nice change for most busy people who are always head down and butt up racing around the playground of life. This asana is a great pose to practise in the morning facing the sun and contemplating the upside of life. I guess it is for this reason, that Urdhva Mukha Svanasana is such an integral part of the well-known yoga asana sequence known as the Salute to the Sun or Surya Namaskar. So this month, I suggest we all take some time out to appreciate the upside of our lives, with a few breath rotations, and blissfully practise upward facing dog with the morning sun shining down on our fortunate faces. The benefits of this asana don’t stop there: Improves posture Opens shoulders and back Strengthens the spine, arms, wrists Stretches chest and lungs, shoulders, and abdomen Firms the buttocks Tones the legs Stimulates abdominal organs Helps relieve mild depression, fatigue, and sciatica Expands the chest Therapeutic for asthma Please follow these steps to practise upward facing dog: 1 Lie face down on the floor, legs straight and about a hand span apart, tops of the feet on the floor. Bend your elbows and spread your palms on the floor beside your waist so that your forearms are at about a 90 degree angle to the floor. 2 Inhale and press your hands firmly into the floor, press the tops of your feet into the floor also. Pull your chest forward to the front and roll your

shoulders down your back. 3 Exhale, straighten your arms and simultaneously lift your torso up and your legs a few inches off the floor. Press the thighs back slightly, the arms are straight and turned out so the elbow creases face the thumb. If you are having trouble here with stiff shoulders use a block or a blanket under your hands for support (see photo one). 4 Press the tailbone toward the pelvis and lift the pelvis toward the navel. Narrow the hip points. Firm but don’t harden the buttocks. 5 Firm the shoulder blades against the back and expand the side ribs forward. Lift through the top of the chest but avoid pushing the front ribs forward. Look straight ahead, crown of the head rising. The shoulders should be directly on top of the wrists, the

legs are free and clear from the floor and the chest open (see photo two). 6 Hold for 30 seconds – 1 minute and rest, repeat as desired. Enjoy your time in the sun! Happy stretching Metta, Kim oxo

Baan Rim Pa restaurant reaches a milestone

R

estaurants come and go almost on a daily basis in Phuket. Only a very few can claim to have been around for 25 years and still be going strong. In the late 80s, American born restaurateur Tom McNamara came to Thailand. He spent several months staying at the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok before moving to Phuket in 1988. He had decided to go fishing and his aim was to catch a Black Marlin, only to be told there weren’t any left in this part of the world. His first time out he caught a 127-kilo Black Marlin.

Tom decided to stay in Phuket and rented a lovely old Thai-style teak house on the rocky outcrop at the far end of Patong beach. It was a long way from the nightlife and the roads weren’t made. But he thought it would be a great place to put up his feet and retire. Not long after someone suggested he should open a restaurant instead of running dinner parties at his house. Tom had owned restaurants in other parts of the world, so why not Phuket? Baan Rim Pa was born. In March 1990 he turned his house into a 30seat restaurant. Tom only did things the right way.

Baan Rim Pa founder Tom McNamara (in red jacket) was a great lover of jazz, Here he is pictured with the restaurant’s resident pianist Tommy Doyle and Bolek Peplowski on sax. He asked Charlie Amattayakul, the Head Master of the cooking classes of the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok to come and train his staff – Charlie grew up and was trained in the Grand Palace Bangkok before joining the Oriental. Charlie spent three months training the Baan Rim Pa team, some of whom came from the Oriental and stayed. Chalermpol “Das” NaNakorn was one of them and was appointed General Manager. Das is now one of the owners of Baan Rim Pa. As time went by Baan Rim Pa grew from 30 seats to 220 seats today. It continues to win numerous awards both

locally and internationally such as Wine Spectator, Thailand Tatler, HAPA and Time magazine to name a few. Television shows from around the world come to film Baan Rim Pa. In recent years teams from the USA, Russia, Australia, China, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and France have chosen to use Baan Rim Pa as a special location. In November 2008 Tom passed away after a long battle with cancer. He left the restaurant to general manager and business partner Das, his wife Pensri McNamara and his two adult children. He wanted Baan Rim Pa to remain a family business as it still is today.

Patrik known for his shockingly intimate study of death, ‘Post Mortem’, now turns his probing, sensitive eye on pain: Muay Thai boxers in that brief, telling moment after descending from the ring. Budenz captures this moment in unstaged backstage portraits shot in several Bangkok stadiums. He says, “Fighters are normally shown as strong, brave and in complete control, but this control crumbles backstage after the fight, and there’s a brief glimpse of the person behind the façade of the fierce warrior, along with the full strength of emotions connected with the 15

Savouring Sydney’s best

One of the most sought-after waterfront properties, goes to Justine Tyerman’s head... Justine Tyerman editor1@classactmedia.co.th

In fact, when we arrived by private lift at the impressive circular marble entranceway...

W

e recently stayed at the opulent harbourside La Corniche apartment in Sydney and happened to perch on bar stools that were last warmed by the rich and famous, as well as sprawl in spa baths where celebrities had soaked just a few days earlier - not to mention sleeping in the same beds - it all went to my head a

little. Perhaps it was the bubbles in my glass or the spa, but I found myself saying odious things like: before chef-to-the-stars Clancy cooked lunch for us “at home”, he looked after Gerard Butler’s culinary needs for three weeks as his live-in chef, and after we left, Ronan Keating and his girlfriend moved in and threw an extravagant party on “our” balcony. I confess I enjoyed the look of wonder on the faces of my friends who suddenly took an animated interest in the alluring mansions on the Luxe Houses website, making helpful suggestions about where WE all might like to go next on OUR travels. Personally, I would go back to La Corniche. The panorama from the 14 room-establishment with its wraparound balconies was astonishing, encompassing a

broad arc from Luna Park, the Harbour Bridge and Opera House to the skyscrapers of the downtown CBD. In fact, when we arrived by private lift at the impressive circular marble entranceway to the 300sq.m whole-floor apartment, the impact of the view through the huge curved picture windows of the living space rendered us speechless and motionless. The flagship of Luxe Houses’ portfolio of prestigious private rental properties in Australia, New Zealand and now Thailand, our magnificent three-bedroom, four-bathroom abode came with a concierge and a mind-boggling list of services, including having chef Clancy cook for us “at home” for our wedding anniversary. The days slipped by in a haze of selfindulgence starting with breakfast on the balcony with that mesmerising view, a workout at the gym or some laps in the heated pool at the fitness centre a few steps downstairs from our apartment, followed by a stroll around the boardwalk to Luna Park or a quick ferry ride from the McMahon Point wharf below us to Darling Harbour or Circular Quay for lunch or shopping. One day we strolled through Hyde Park past lovely fountains, gardens and the beautiful Anzac Memorial, through the scenic botanical gardens and jumped on the famous Manly ferry, perfectly timed to watch a stunning sunset behind the Harbour Bridge. Sydney at its best.

My food-obsessed husband and daughter spent hours at play in the huge kitchen with its impressive line-up of German Gaggenau appliances, marble bench and Nespresso machine. The bedrooms were gorgeous – the spacious master bedroom with an adjoining dressing room had a super-king bed, plush, deep carpet soft enough to sleep on, a balcony with a Harbour Bridge, Opera House and city lights view and a spacious tiled ensuite with a glass-walled hydrotherapy shower and spa bath large enough for six. The second bedroom had a king bed, balcony with a fabulous harbour view and an ensuite with a spa bath, while the third bedroom had an ensuite – and a piano. Being cold in Hokkaido A Thai girl experiences snow and Japanese culture for the first time

A

inu museum features the history of Hokkaido Island’s ancient people. There was a show which highlighted the traditional wild living which people believed were in nature and soul. They had songs to worship nature and Gods before going out to catch the animals in the jungle. They also played their traditional musical instruments which were made from wood. The style of their houses consisted of high roofs, which helped protect them from the snow. They would hang up the salmon they caught on the side of their houses so that the salmon would dry in the sun. They would eat the salmon during the cold winter. An interesting fact is that women would have a tattoo on their faces. This was considered beautiful, though to me, I can’t imagine ever doing that for the amount of pain one must go through. The trees that covered the island’s mountains were beautiful. They looked like they were out of a landscape painting. Bears also live in the mountains. Noboribetsu, a staff member of the bear park, takes care of all those bears and preserves them before they become extinct. Tourists brought apples for the bears, and the bears were even holding out their hands all ready for the apples, so there’s no doubt that the bears like apples. The Otaru Music Box Museum cre-

These kind of music boxes are an appropriate gift for someone. Some styles consist of a design of an angel, sushi, and others ears dressed in royal clothing. No need to complain about the meals in Hokkaido at all. Every bite is delicious whether it be desserts or main courses. The fact that the weather is so cold doesn’t matter when there are many hot meals to have. For example, hot pots and grilled meats, which are as popular as beef, pork and lamb in Thailand. There is also a major love for seafood here, especially giant crab. To me, the milk and yogurt here is a lot more delicious and fresher than what I have ever tasted before. If one would like to try something simple, furikake

would be a nice example. Furikake is a dry Japanese seasoning which should be sprinkled on top of rice. The dessert is also very delicious as it is not too sweet. You will not be disappointed about the snacks here. Our tour guide, Nontawat Wor Singhakajen, suggested several snacks which have special ingredients and are only available at Hokkaido Island, such as matcha Kit-Kat, and pistachios covered in wasibi. If produducts are made on the island a blue Hokkaido Island logo will be on the packaging. He said, “If the Hokkaido logo appears on the product,

that means you can find that product only in Hokkaido. No one can find Hokkaido products in any other area.” The fact that the whole trip was cold was turned around when we finally ended up going somewhere where we could warm up. We went to Onsen. Onsen is a place where one can relax within a 40 degree hot spring. By taking a break from the cold weather, one is able to refresh their energy. I would like to thank Sansiri, who gave me this great opportunity. It was certainly worth it, even though it took six hours to get there!

Wearable tech and smartwatches CONNECTED LIFE Dana Blouin DTBlouin@yahoo.com

N

ot one aspect of wearable tech has been as talked about as much as the smartwatch. Since the Pebble smartwatch broke Kickstarter records in 2012 (the first time), the smartwatch market has been a primary focal point for wearable tech. While many of the early model smartwatches that hit the market took on the feel of being just an extended notification device, today many are fulfilling the role of a supplemental communication platform. Though they still require connectivity through a smartphone, they are able to facilitate additional forms of communication beyond just simple notifications. Though smartwatches were making technical advances incrementally, we saw a sizable leap forward in functionality when Apple unveiled their much-anticipated Apple Watch in September of last year. During the event, Apple debuted new communication features and a simplified and intuitive interface design that has become the hallmark of Apple products in this modern device-centric era. In unveiling the Apple Watch to the world,

Pebble Smartwatch. Apple showed the public that a smartwatch could be more than a notification device, that it could be used to supplement our primary mode of communication through our smartphones and to personalize that communication. How successful these particular features will be is still unknown, but the Apple Watch doesn’t lack for other features just in case. Apple’s new focus on the health space is apparent in the Apple Watch, as it has packed in many features found in other wearables that focus on health and fitness.

Apple Watch. That move ties in with their Apple HealthKit, which aims to aggregate biometric and health data from different apps and devices to a single place on the user’s smartphone. Though not all the details and specs are known, that is all set to change on March 9 as Apple has an event planned in which the Apple Watch is expected to be the main point of focus ahead of its anticipated April 2015 release. I’ll be watching with interest, will you? Until next time, stay connected.

Gaming wars: Best console ever?

Our in-house gaming fanatics go head-to-head and debate over several aspects of the industry. This month’s question: What is the best gaming console ever made? J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

Chad Nolan Meyers chadnolanmeyers@hotmail.com

Nintendo 64 all the way

PlayStation 2 is king

I

f we’re talking about the most memorable games, the ones where emotions got the best of me, the console in which the most fun was had – it’s Nintendo 64. The Nintendo 64 was the last of the old guard as it played cartridges – not compact discs, but that was part of the charm. Games likes Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64 (still the greatest racing game to date, by the way) never froze and were always a reason to stop talking to your friends. Not to mention Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 which virtually revolutionised the RPG genre in every way possible. While GTA3 is a benchmark in gaming, so was Goldeneye 007 for the N64. This was the most popular shooter until Call of Duty stole many of the innovations introduced by the Bond game. The N64 was also the first console to have an analogue joy-stick

controller, something Sony thought so highly of as to copy it. It even came in funky colours! Nintendo changed the game when N64 came out in 1996 (Japan) and is probably the most important console in terms of bridging the gap from the old school to the new school in all aspects of gaming: controller, graphics (the first to go 3D), memory capability, processing speed, etc. Clearly, the most creative games were on the N64 mostly because Nintendo had to make their own games – the cartridges were too expensive for developers to make. The N64 is timeless, pure and simple. So, Chad, by the time your game finishes loading on the PS2, I’ll be “finishing him” in Mortal Kombat Trilogy and rolling around in my Landmaster Tank in Star Fox 64 on my fire-orange N64.

I

’ll be the first to admit it, I was a staunch supporter of Nintendo. But then they decided to make a cube and so I looked for greener pastures. You see, Nintendo is for kids and families, and as I entered my teenage years, I needed a little more adult content. After completely ignoring Sony’s first system, I decided to jump ship and pick up a Sony Playstation 2. The PS2 was released in 2000, eventually setting the record for console sales, with 155 million units sold. N64 only sold 34 million JP! So why so good? Two things, its competition and its games. Nintendo focuses on its own series, Mario, Zelda, etc., and rarely overlapped with the games developed for the PS2. The Xbox was a new system, Microsoft’s first jump into video game consoles. There was doubt, and the average consumer isn’t going to gamble $200-300 on the dark horse when they know they have a sure thing in Playstation. Sega had

waved the white flag on console mak- ing. But it’s all about the GAMES. Close to 4,000! Several series starting points were on the PS2. Who can forget the first time they picked up Grand Theft Auto 3? A revolutionary sandbox. Pulling off 2 million point moves in Tony Hawk. Enacting revenge in God of War. Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank, Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, Shadow of the Colossus. I could go on all day. Majestic stories now told with amazing (at the time) 3D graphics, stories with characters I’ll never forget, memories I’ll cherish my whole life. The amount of school I missed to stay home and play video games is embarrassing, and its all thanks to the PS2, the greatest system of all time.

BIRDMAN Or the Unexpected Virture of Ignorance

Leo to play 24 people on screen

Daniel Key’s 1981 novel The Minds of Billy Milligan will be the source material for Leonardo DiCaprio’s newest project, A Crowded Room. The film tells the story of Milligan, first person who successfully used multiple personality disorder as a defence in court after he was charged with robbery and the rape of three women at an American university. It’s been in development for decades and DiCaprio had reportedly shown interest in the film since 1997. Milligan’s personalities included three females (including a threeyear-old girl), an Australian, a sophisticated Englishman, and a Yugoslavian communist in addition to 13 “undesirable” personalities.

Starring: Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan and Lindsay Duncan

S

urely, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (MPAS) could not have been wrong for picking Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) as the Best Picture of 2015? The film, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu (21 Grams; Babel) is a refreshing and frustrating novel yet eccentric, serious but funny. Very funny, actually, almost in the same realm as The Cable Guy and The Big Lebowski – a dark comedy with a dramatic pulse but done much better. In an attempt to be taken seriously as an actor, former Hollywood star Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), known best for his role as the iconic superhero Birdman, directs and stars in an adaptation of Raymond Carver’s What we talk about when we talk about love, which he also wrote. It’s Broadway, baby, and this is where former superheroes go to show their “real” acting chops. Broadway veteran Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) antagonises Thomson at various points and almost sabotages his efforts at a comeback. All this while juggling his fatherly duties and dealing with the anxiety that goes with the production. Thomson is a prisoner of his own inflated ego and goes so far as to think: “if George Clooney dies on the same day as me, I’ll be forgotten”. He risks everything just so he could matter once

again, whatever the cost. He’s a tragic character who was once at the top but has fallen so far that he’s become less than a joke, he’s irrelevant. As great as Keaton’s performance is, Norton’s is flawless – which begs the question: is this real life? Like a peregrine falcon soaring at 390km/h, Birdman is blurry from beginning to end. Not cinematically (it won an Oscar for that too) as there are no cuts in the entire film – it’s all seemingly done in one impressive shot! Still, the audience is given a meta film dressed up in surrealism. Questions about whether this film takes place in the real world, given Thomson’s penchant for talking to himself, showing off his telekinetic powers to no one and even flying through the air. But there are also doses of clarity: a taxi cab asking for fare, a hobo reciting lines of a play, and so on. The camera veneers from shot to shot, waiting for the actors to roll through and take the audience on yet another “situation”. Where we ultimately get to, however, are moments where characters are pining over instances that, ultimately, don’t matter as much as they believe. From a pregnancy scare to marital troubles to recovering addicts and the divide between critics and artists – Birdman’s characters constantly confuse admiration for love and realism for talent. While much ink has been spilled on calling this Iñárritu’s masterpiece (seriously, one tracking shot for 119 minutes? Well done), Birdman is also Keaton’s magnum opus. Who better to portray an aging actor vying for credibility decades after playing a famous superhero? Keaton was truly the only choice and he delivered in the same way Mickey Rourke did in The Wrestler.

Fashion Police gets real

The famous, long running fashion critique show has hit some pretty big bumps in the road recently. Main host and star, Joan Rivers passed away last year, and then key commentator George Kotsiopoulos left the show. Now a controversial comment made by E! News star Guliana Rancic has caused the only other star on the show to resign! Kelly Os-

bourne has quit the show due to the recent backlash of Guliana’s dreadlock comment after five years. I thought the whole point of the show was “taking the piss” as far more offensive comments have been made on the show in the past I am sure! I find this a shame because this is the most fitting job Kelly has ever had in my eyes. Rumours of her replacement are already swirling. Khloe Kardashian and Nene Leakes have been mentioned. Stay tuned.

She and her beau participated in a polar bear like swimming event in Chicago for charity and it is all over the news. What happened? This is something my friends do, not Lady Gaga! Whatever I

guess we all “grow up” and stop wearing meat. She did however have on a beautiful gown at the Oscars with what appeared to be dish washing gloves where she evidently gave a fantastic Julie Andrews tribute.

But Sukhothai’s Jirawut Saranun answered back only two minutes later heading in a cross to put his side up 2-1, with the score remaining unchanged through to half time. But five minutes later, Phuket’s captain, Yusuke Sato brought the Ronins back into contention, when he headed a free kick to Sukhothai’s goalkeepr who caught the shot

With 7 points after three matches, the Fire Bats sit high, in second place of the league, behind Ang Thong, the only club to have won all of its matches so far. Phuket FC earn bye in FA Cup as Prachuap forfeits FOOTBALL JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

WEDESDAY’S SCHEDuled Thai FA Cup match (March 4) between Phuket FC and Prachuap FC was cancelled due to travel constraints. The Phuket News were told that Prachuap FC were unable to make the journey to Phuket Wednesday (March 4), just three days after the Killer Bees clash with Trat FC on Sunday (March 1) in a match that ended in a 0-0 draw. Prachuap and Phuket FC were scheduled to play under the lights of Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town in a qualifying match to enter the annual tournament. As a result, Phuket

FC have been given a bye to move on to the first round of the competition, scheduled to take place on June 4. Opponents for that match will be announced soon. In addition, Phuket FC have also tweaked their schedule and will now play a home match on March 11 against Thai Honda. The March 11 match was originally set to take place on Thai Honda’s home pitch, the 72nd Anniversary Stadium, in Bangkok. The change also affects the return match on August 15 as Phuket FC will now play an away match at Thai Honda, which was originally scheduled to take place in Phuket. The final started as a one sided affair with the French side enjoying most of the possession but solid defence from the Vagabonds didnt allow them to break the line. The Brazilian produced a tremendous finish from 25 yards at Anfield to settle a game of immense quality after City striker Edin Dzeko’s 26th minute goal had cancelled out an equally spectacular opener from Jordan Henderson in the 11th minute. Liverpool only returned from Istanbul in the early hours of Friday morning (February 27) and manager Brendan Rodgers said their performance against City was testament to the dedication of his players. “To get back at half four in the early hours of Friday morning – by the time they got to bed it was six, and they had to sleep all of Friday,” said the Northern Irishman, whose side are on an 11-game unbeaten streak in the league. “They restricted a top team to just one shot on target and deserve all the praise they will get.” Meanwhile, three days after Glenn Murray netted

English Premier League 2014 - 2015

Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho celebrates scoring their second goal during the English Premier League football match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield stadium. Photo: AFP/ Adrian Dennis twice to fire Crystal Palace to a 3-1 win against West Ham on Saturday (February 28), the Eagles were sent back down to earth with a 0-1 loss at Southampton on Tuesday (March 3). Senegal winger Sadio Man’s late strike clinched the victory for the Saints with seven minutes remaining at St Mary’s as the race to qualify for the Champions League heats up. The Saints had gone three games without a win or a goal that included a 1-0 loss to West Brom last Saturday (February 28). In other news, a moment

of red card confusion helped Wayne Rooney return Manchester United to winning ways with a brace in a 2-0 Premier League victory over Sunderland on Saturday (February 28). Beaten 2-1 at Swansea City last weekend, Louis van Gaal’s United were frustrated by Sunderland until the 64th minute at Old Trafford, when Radamel Falcao won a penalty after being brought down in the visitors’ box. John O’Shea appeared to be the culprit, but referee Roger East elected to send off Wes Brown – like O’Shea, a

former United player – despite protests from Sunderland’s players that he had got the wrong man. Rooney planted the penalty into the bottom-left corner and then added a second goal. Asked about the red card mix-up, United manager Louis van Gaal told a television reporter: “That’s a mistake. You make mistakes as well, and so do I. It can happen.” He added: “We are on our way and we have been in the top four for more than 10 or 12 weeks. I think we are a stable team in the top four. I hope at the end of the season,

we are still there.” Meanwhile, Christian Benteke scored a ner veless stoppage-time penalty as Aston Villa edged West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Tuesday (March 3) to earn new manager Tim Sherwood a precious first Premier League victory. The Belgian striker’s goal gave Villa their first league win since December 7, shooting the club three points clear of the relegation zone and ending a run of seven consecutive defeats. Sherwood, who succeeded the sacked Paul Lambert last

month, celebrated jubilantly at the final whistle after what could prove a turning point in his bid to prevent Villa succumbing to a first relegation in 28 years. “We have conceded late against Stoke (in a 2-1 loss on February 21) and it is a real body blow, but to score one late is an excellent feeling and I thought it was thoroughly deserved,” Sherwood said. The Phuket News went to print before most of the midweek matches of the English Premier League kicked-off this week.

Scandal, behaviour mire NRL lead-up NRL

did not name any of the five charged players, including representative forwards Greg Bird and Dave Taylor, in the team to play in Saturday’s season opener (March 7) against Wests Tigers. If that wasn’t enough unwanted publicity, champion club Souths were fined Aus$20,000 (B507,000) by the NRL fol-

lowing an investigation into an incident in the United States involving two of their players. Former club captain John Sutton and English forward Luke Burgess spent the night behind bars during the team’s trip to Arizona for a training camp in November after they were ejected from a bar. Both players were charged

with “disorderly conduct, fighting”, a misdemeanour offence, while Burgess was also hit with an assault charge, media reports said. Sutton was dumped as Souths captain and Burgess, the brother of English internationals Sam and George Burgess, made an off-season switch to Manly in January. AFP

Mealamu to start record 163rd game

A

ustralia’s National Rugby League season kicked-off Thursday (March 6) with South Sydney Rabbitohs opening the defence of their title amid a damaging drugs scandal blighting the sport and all-too-common player behaviour issues. The lead-up to the new season has been mired by a cocaine scandal that has engulfed the Gold Coast Titans with five current players facing court along with former NRL and current Queensland Reds Super Rugby star Karmichael Hunt. Titans coach Neil Henry

All Blacks warhorse Keven Mealamu will set a new record for Super Rugby appearances after the Auckland Blues on Wednesday (March 4) named him in this weekend’s team to face the Golden Lions. The 35-year-old hooker will contest his 163rd Super Rugby match, surpassing the mark set by former NSW Waratahs and Queensland Reds lock Nathan Sharpe. Mealamu, who is also the second most capped All Black with 123 Test appearances, made his Super Rugby debut in 2000, when the competition was still known as the Super 12. AFP

Thailand to take on Korea in Davis Cup

Thailand is set for the first round match-up of the 2015 Davis Cup, which begins today and continues through to the weekend in Nonthaburi against South Korea. Danai Udomchoke is set to take on Hyeon Chung while Warit Sornbutnark will face off against Ji Sung Nam in singles competitions. Meanwhile, brothers Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana will take on Yong-Kyu Lim and MinKyu Song in the doubles event of the Group I Asia/Oceania competition. Last year, Thailand played the first round of the tournament at Thanyapura Phuket’s facilities in Thalang, where they made short work of Hong Kong on their way to win the Group II category, which gave the country promotion to Group I.

Bayern’s Guardiola dismisses City rumours Buriram’s Gilberto Macena, centre, scores the winner against Guangzhou R&F. Photo: BangkokPost

Macena inspires Buriram comeback in Guangzhou FOOTBALL THAI PREMIER LEAGUE champions Buriram United came from behind to stun Guangzhou R&F 2-1 with a last-gasp goal to top Group F of the AFC Champions League on Tuesday (March 3). In the other Group F match, South Korea’s Seongnam beat Japan’s Gamba Osaka 2-0. After two games, Buriram have six points, Guangzhou and Seongnam three each, and Gamba zero. At Guangzhou, Lu Lin

opened the scoring for the hosts after 26 minutes only for South Korean Ko Seul-Ki to equalise just before half-time. Coached by former Romania international Cosmin Contra, Guangzhou dominated for long periods in the second half. But after they squandered several chances, the Chinese were punished in the dying moments by Gilberto Macena’s bicycle kick. Brazilian Macena is on loan from Chinese side Hangzhou Greentown. Buriram will next meet Gamba in Osaka on March 18. Bangkok Post

Pep Guardiola said Tuesday (March 3) he will only decide his Bayern Munich future at the end of the season and dismissed rumours of a move to Manchester City. Guardiola has been tipped as a possible candidate to replace City coach Manuel Pellegrini, but the Spaniard poured cold water on any speculation. Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummeigge has said he wants to extend with Guardiola as soon as possible. But the Spaniard is notorious for balking at long-term contracts with his current deal to expire in June 2016. Guardiola won four titles last season in his first year in charge and is on course to steer Bayern to a third straight Bundesliga title in May. The 44-year-old still has 18 months

Alonso to miss season-opener in Australia Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will miss the opening race of the 2015 season in Australia after suffering concussion in a crash in testing on February 22, his Mclaren team confirmed last week. “To limit those environmental risk factors, specifically, his doctors have advised that he should not compete in the imminent Australian Grand Prix meeting,” McLaren said. “Fernando has understood and accepted that advice, and the two McLaren-Honda cars will therefore be driven in Australia by Fernando’s teammate Jenson Button.” AFP

Phuketian’s fighting dream comes true MUAY THAI

JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

octors told Marcel Gaines he would never fight again. After more than 30 professional Muay Thai fights, the 30-year-old South African wasn’t about to quit just yet – there was one more stadium he needed to fight in: Bangkok’s famed Rajadamnern Stadium. “It was always my dream to fight there. It’s the hallowedground of Muay Thai, along with Lumpinee [Stadium]. And now these people were telling me I can’t? I couldn’t accept it,” he said. In March 2014, Gaines was on a tear in the local Phuket

fighting circuit. But the accumulation of hits to the head took their toll. During one of his routine runs, Gaines said his vision started to blur. Still, Gaines carried on as per the advice of his now former trainer. Until a few days later, after a particularly hard sparring session, Gaines collapsed to the ground. He was carried out and sent to the hospital where doctors told him he had a brain hemorrhage. Another hit could be fatal, they said. “I wouldn’t wish that pain on anybody. It’s like a sound, the pain had a sound and it was constantly on max, 24/7,” Gaines told The Phuket News. “Everyone told me not to train either. That was one of the hardest things to deal with,

Photo: Jeff Sainlar watching your friends train and not being able to do it, but worse because I became a liability.” For eight months, Gaines would think about not just making a comeback, but to fight at

Rajadamnern. It was a dream he almost attained twice before until injuries got in the way. But the pain became unbearable and prescription drugs were not enough. At one point, he admitted to going so far as to

asking to be smothered with a pillow. “It was a very dark time. I did think about that, I would’ve done anything for the pain to stop,” he said. With the support of trainers, his wife, and friends, Gaines slowly started to come back to the ring. First it was long runs in the morning and afternoon. Pretty soon, he was holding pads for other fighters and then hitting punching bags. From there, he went with light sparring with people he trusted at Tiger Muay Thai and MMA Training Camp in Chalong. In late December, Gaines stepped into the ring for the first time in eight and a half months, knocking out his opponent. Three more knockout victories followed before he

finally got the call to fight at Rajadamnern Stadium for a bout on February 22. “I was just buzzing when I got to the stadium, this history, the feeling of fulfilling a dream I had since I was 6 years old,” he said. Gaines’ debut bout at the legendary stadium ended with his fifth victory in a row – a first round TKO win where he ran through his opponent. “I thought to myself ‘I can die here and they’d find me with a smile on my face’. I was in disbelief of the situation, but in a good way,” he said, “I finally felt like I’d made it.”
