million was finished in record time – just four months. Last Friday Governor Maitri Inthusut and Prathuang Sornkam, the airport’s director, toured the new Terminal. Gov Maitri explained that it will be able to accommodate 1,000 people at a time – or two planeloads – and

will be open 24 hours a day. Initially it will receive only two charter services: Jet Asia Airlines with three flights a day from China, and UT Air with three flights a day from Russia. This will take some pressure off the existing heavily overloaded main terminal until the new main termi-

New terminal takes the strain at airport Continued from page 1. Displaying his mastery of statistics, Gov Maitri said the existing main terminal has a design capacity of 160 flights and 20,000 passenger movements a day, but is currently having to cope with an average of 224 f lights and 37,524 passenger movements. There seems to be no sign of the rush to visit Phuket abating, he noted. “There were 61,004 flights in 2012 and 72,590 flights in 2013, an increase of 18.99 per cent; and 9,526,243 passenger movements in 2012 and 11,328,314 passengers in 2013, an increase of 18.92 per cent.” The new main terminal will give the airport a design capacity of 12.4 million passenger movements a year. At the current rate of growth, the airport may have to handle that many as soon as the Package tourists check in at the new Terminal X when it opened on Wednesday. All safe after dive boat sinks near Koh Tachai S

wedish daily newspaper Aftonbladet has published video of the dramatic sinking on Wednesday (January 29) of a dive boat near Koh Tachai. Luckily, the Phuket-based dive boat Peter Pan was close by to rescue all on board the Ranong-based Aladdin, which began to take on water at around noon, sinking so fast that passengers had to leap for their lives, many of them having no time to put on life jackets. Aftonbladet quoted Swedish dive instructor Dennis Karlsson who was on the Peter Pan when the distress call from the Aladdin went out. “It was just a coincidence that our boat was there and could come to the rescue,” the Swedish newspaper quoted

him as saying. The Aladdin capsized and took just minutes to sink in 25 metres of water. “It was really, really serious. It took on a lot of water,” Mr Karlsson said. “People threw themselves headlong into the water. Some were sucked under the water with the boat before they resurfaced and were pulled out. It was really amazing that everyone survived.” No one was seriously hurt. Mr Karlsson said he understood the boat was holed when it ran over something in the water which was rammed into the hull by the propeller.” He told Aftonbladet that passengers on the Aladdin told him they were on a four-day dive trip in the Andaman Sea, embarking in Khao Lak.

A screenshot from the Swedish daily newspaper Aftonbladet video shows those on board jumping for their lives.

Irishman found lost in Thalang

Ya ba courier caught POLICE AT A CH ECK point in Baan Muang Mai, Thalang, thought Sahod Inton was behaving suspiciously after they pulled him over on Sunday night (February 2), so they asked the 45-year-old to step away from his truck while they searched it. In the cab of the truck, concealed inside an amplifier box fitted in place of the back seat – though not concealed well enough to avoid the officers’ trained eyes – they found a white plastic bag containing 1,950 methamphetamine (ya ba) pills, packed in blue bags. Sahod admitted smuggling the ya ba. He explained that he worked as a truck driver for a flour mill and received a salary of just B11,000 a month. With a wife and four children to support, this was not enough to cover his family’s expenses, he said, so he had taken an extra job as a drug runner. He added that he had taken the risk of bringing to drugs into Phuket because he thought police officers would have their hands full providing security for the general election. Apparently he missed the news that the election on the island had been cancelled. Eakkapop Thongtub @thephuketnews

Press ban on Moshe trial T

he press in Phuket were barred on Monday (February 3) from reporting on hearings in the trial of Hungarian-Israeli citizen Moshe David, also known as Gabor Nemeth. David, 38, is on trial in Phuket for the murder of fellow Hungarian Peter Reisz on November 24, 2012. It is alleged that David stabbed Mr Reisz to death in a house behind the Makro store opposite Central Festival, after his victim refused to lend him any more money. He is also alleged that he enlisted the help of a third Hungarian, Gyorgy Lajos Kvalka, to dispose of Mr Reisz’s body, which was wrapped in plastic and then dumped in woods not far away. Whatever the outcome of the trial – and that is likely to be months away – David will

Moshe David, pictured after his arrest in December 2012. afterwards be escorted to Koh Samui for another murder trial. In Samui a skeleton was

found buried beneath the basement of his home. The skeleton is believed

to be that of Lazlo Csepai, a wealthy businessman, also from Hungary, who went into the property development business with David. Mr Csepai, said to have been a dollar billionaire in the retail business in Europe, disappeared in February 2011. David was interviewed by police after he was seen driving Mr Csepai’s car and using his credit card. He told them he had Mr Csepai’s permission to do both, but did not know where the owner was. Despite their suspicions, police were unable to take matters further. It was only when a detective hired by Mr Csepai’s family found Mata Isawan in Hungary that the case moved forward. Isawan confessed that he had helped David bury Mr Csepai’s body below the house, afterwards cementing over the hole. Based on this confession, Samui police dug up the basement and found the skeleton. The skull had been bashed in, probably with a hoe. Both Isawan and Kvalka deny having a hand in the murders, but initially confessed to helping dispose of the respective victims’ bodies. Isawan remains in Hungary

but Kvalka is expected to go on trial in Phuket as an accomplice in Mr Reisz’s murder. Court officials in Phuket have recently imposed what appears to be a blanket ban on reporting details of hearings in criminal cases. Reporters have been told they may attend hearings but may not take notes or recordings, and may not report until the case is finished. It is not clear why. The ban applies to other cases: That of Swede Tommy Viktor Söderlund, on trial for his part in the killing of Maxim Schantz, more than two years ago. His co-accused, Johan Sebastian Ljung, was sentenced to life in prison on January 24; Hearings in the trial of the owners of the Tiger disco on charges of causing death by negligence after the inferno at the disco on August 17, 2012, in which four people died; and The “body in the bin” trial of Stein Havard Dokset, alleged to have killed his girlfriend then stuffed her body into a garbage bin and taped it shut. The bin remained for three years in a bathroom of his Kata home before police were convinced to search the house.

Phuket’s victorious protesters split up Wiparatana NaThalang reporter1@classactmedia.co.th

T

he anti-government protesters in Phuket have separated into two groups after what one leader has described as a “difference of opinions”. Surathin Lianudom, former Mayor of Rassada, has formed a new group that he calls the Phuket Patriotic Rebels, which will take a harder line than the other group led by Thirawut Sritularak and Amnuay Kumban. The separation comes despite the protesters’ success in blocking all voting in Phuket in the national elections last Sunday (February 2). Mr Surathin says that his group will adhere more closely to the line taken in Bangkok by the leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban, who is fighting to get the Shinawatra clan out of politics and end corruption. Mr Surathin told The Phuket News that his main aims would be to ensure that Provincial Hall – the centre of government power in Phuket – would not reopen until “we win”. The same would apply to the Customs Department, he said, but not to the Land Office, Transport Department and some other government offices that are essential to people’s daily lives and the island’s economy. Asked why the protesters had split, Mr Surathin said, “Over the past three months, we have become very tired of the lack of unity [among the protesters]. We were not

Any suggestions I made were rejected. They always seemed afraid to take any action. “We need to have quick decisions on actions to take. We have a different style of working.” On Monday Mr Amnuay’s group went in procession around Phuket Town soliciting donations to feed the protesters. Mr Surathin and his group, however, went the Customs Department to ensure it stayed closed. “I am usi ng my ow n money to pay for food and administration of my group. I am not taking any of the donations [the others raised].” He added that he had already spent “hundreds of thousands of baht” of his own money for the cause. The Phuket Patriotic Rebels are now looking for a new place to set up their protest

HQ. “We are trying to find another stage. Now we are going around the city fighting for the anti-government cause.” Mr Amnuay took a softer line on this latest development, emphasising that the goal of the two groups was still the same. “Mr Surathin’s group is hard-core. We cannot tune in to the same wavelength but there is no question of a split. “We have the same goal but we are doing in different ways. We are still helping each other.” Mr Thirawut also denied there had been a falling-out. “There has been no split. Mr Surathin’s style of leadership is very strong. [Mr Surathin and his people] have just moved out and set up their own group, which means we can divide the work between us.” On Sunday, protesters led

by Mr Surathin were successful in blocking the election, sitting down in front of Thalang Police Station so that ballot papers that were stored

there could not be distributed. Phuket was one of nine provinces, all in the South of Thailand, where elections failed to take place. The others were Songkhla, Trang, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Ranong, Krabi, Chumphon and Phang Nga. The Bangkok Post reported that the former governing Pheu Thai Party, despite having no opposition in the election – which the democrats boycotted – received fewer votes than in the last general election. Pheu Thai estimates, however, that it gained 300 seats – 240 in constituency elections and 60 from its party list, theoretically retaining control. That said, Parliament cannot be convened because the required 95 per cent of parliamentary seats have not been filled. The caretaker government of PM Yingluck Shinawatra plans to have more elections held in those

constituencies where elections polling did not take place. There was no voting at 10,283 polling stations around the country. Even in Pheu Thai strongholds turnout was considerably lower than in the 2011 election, which saw 73 per cent of registered voters make their mark. For example, turnout was only 54.5 per cent in Udon Thani, 55.4 per cent in Ubon Ratchathani, 50.4 per cent in Surin, 54.7 per cent in Chiang Mai, and 57 per cent in Chiang Rai. The Pheu Thai Party also faces rising disenchantment among a core group of voters, the rice farmers, many of whom are now blocking roads in and out of the capital – including roads from Phuket and the South – in protest at the government’s failure to pay the money promised in its controversial rice pledging scheme.

Long-time expat book seller dies Anthika Muangrod reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

merican Carol Ann C a r m i c h a el , 65, founder of the Kata Bookstore and a Phuket resident for 18 years, died at the weekend in her Rawai home. Her body was found on Sunday afternoon (February 2) by an assistant and a neighbour, who called the authorities. Police arrived with rescue foundation staff who took Mrs Carmichael’s body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy. It is believed she died sometime on Saturday night. Mrs Carmichael was born on Christmas Day, 1948 and was raised in California and, before coming to Thailand, worked for IBM, writing code back in the days when computers filled whole rooms. She first came to Thailand about 20 years ago, visiting Koh Samui, where she met her Thai husband, Addy. She also got to know the owner of a book store on the island,

Carol Carmichael. whom she helped by sourcing books from America. She decided to set up her own book store and initially targeted Koh Chang. However, she contracted malaria and became very ill. After that she decided against Koh Chang and moved instead to Phuket. In Rawai she and Addy

built their own home and in 1996 Mrs Carmichael opened her first secondhand book store in Kata Centre. After about four years she moved to a better location close to Club Med, at a lower rent. The business went well and she was was able to hire an assistant and also to sell Native American Indian collectibles. Five years ago, however, Addy died of a heart attack and, just months later, the landlord of the book shop, a good friend of her husband, asked her to move out. A neighbour, who asked to be named only as Peter, said, “Carol became very stressed. Her husband had just passed away, and she had too many books to move, and she didn’t know where to go. Depression seems to have been the cause of her problems since then.” She found a new place for her business not far away, but the rent was much higher than in the old shop, and sales drifted down. After about 18 months she decided to close the

store and retire. Her home still contains thousand of books. The assistant, who had worked for her for four years, continued to visit her every two or three days as she became more and more reclusive. Peter said, “I have known her since 1996 and she had a real passion for music. She loved classic rock and R&B and all that hippy music stuff; she was a child of the sixties.” Two months ago, he said, she picked up a sore throat – a virus that was going around. She went to hospital once and clinics twice but after that stopped getting medical help. “She didn’t want to go to hospital, nor did she want to eat. She just seemed to give up on life,” he said. Mrs Carmichael is survived by her 96-year-old mother in the US and a son in his mid 40s, also in the US. The funeral will be held at Wat Rawai at a date to be set once the autopsy has been completed. This is expected to take about a month.

riends of well known Phuket musician Jeffrey Sevilla have rallied around to raise money after he was admitted to hospital on Saturday (February 1), suffering from a serious asthma attack. Mr Sevilla is originally from the Philippines but has worked in Phuket as a jazz pianist since 1995, working in various places around the island and also a partner in the popular jazz bar Music Matter in Phuket Town. He’s one of the leaders of Phuket’s music industry. He went to Mission Hospital on Saturday (February 1) when he had trouble breathing and was immediately taken to intensive care and put on a ventilator. Mr Sevilla, 46, does not have health insurance, so close friend and fellow musician Mari Okawa and business partner Thidaporn “Kae” Mongkronkaew have set up a fund for donations to help him. So far more than B30,000 has been raised thanks to donations by his fellow musician friends and the Phuket Filipino community. The

Ms Okawa told The Phuket News. Ms Okawa and Ms Thidaporn have been overwhelmed with the generosity of those who have do-

nated. “We really appreciate it and Jeff does too,” Ms Okawa said. “When other people have needed help, he’s always been there. So now it’s payback time. “Last night [Monday] they took him off the ventilator and he can talk a little bit. He was worried about the bill, and wanted to leave because of the expense. But we told him we were raising the money and not to worry about it.” Mr Sevilla has suffered from asthma since childhood and in recent months has had a number of smaller attacks. Anyone wishing to donate money can contact Ms Okawa via her Facebook page (facebook.com/mari. okawa.1) or make a donation to Ms Okawa’s Bangkok Bank account: 264-4-39214-0. She asked that anyone who makes a donation please leave a name and the amount donated in the deposit details so that she can keep track of who has donated money for Mr Sevilla. People can also stop by Mission Hospital and donate directly there via visiting the cashier.

Garbage-to-fertiliser plan aired for island Wiparatana NaThalang

T Fire trucks arrive to tackle the fire in Khao Lak.

Two fires put out in Thalang, Khao Lak FIR EFIGHTERS TOOK two hours on Monday (February 3) to put out a blaze in a rubber plantation to the east of Thalang Town. Thepkrasattri Municipal Fire Brigade sent three fire trucks and Srisoonthorn Municipality sent another two to the fire which, at one stage, covered more than five rai of trees. Tackling the fire was given particular urgency because it was next to Baan Kok Wat Mai School and many houses in the village. It took more than two hours to put out the fire, which was blamed on a combination of hot, dry weather and, possibly, a discarded cigarette. This was the second local

brush fire on Monday. The first was in Khao Lak, close to the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort. The alarm was raised after smoke began rolling across the resort from a growing fire in wasteland close by. Sawat Thunkang, Mayor of Khukkhak, said the alarm was raised at 11 am and two fire engines were sent to extinguish it. This was done fairly easily, but Mr Sawat said that roughly a rai of wilderness was destroyed. Authorities suspect the fire may have been set deliberately by local people to clear the land, but got out of hand. Suthicha Sirirat & Eakkapop Thongtub

he island may get a large facility to turn garbage into fertiliser and produce electricity, a public hearing at the Phuket Merlin Hotel was told on Thursday (January 30). Phinyata Bawaunbut, a waste management consultant who chaired the meeting, explained, “We plan to build an organic fertilizer production and energy center on 15,680 sqm (10 rai) of Phuket Municipality land next to the incinerators at Sapan Hin. “The aim of this is to reduce the cost of fuel used to burn garbage with more than 30 per cent water content,” Ms Phinyata explained. Organic material in the garbage will be separated from other substances using water. The light materials that float will flow out of the hydro-separator. The non-combustible waste and non-biological waste such as sand, glass and metal – which are heavier than water – will be landfilled. The organic waste will enter an anaerobic digester. This process will give off methane gas, which will be used to make electricity to be sold to the national grid. The compost created in

Consultant Phinyata Bawaunbut, left, who chaired the meeting. the process will be sold for fertiliser. “We will run a pilot project processing 80 tons a day to start with, and if this is successful we will gradually expand the project,” Ms Phinyata told the audience, made up of officials from the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (OrBorJor), which owns the project, local academics, representatives of the media, colleges and government offices in Saphan Hin, as well as people living close to the incinerator. The project will cost B500

million to set up, and B35 million a year to run. But if it is effective, the project will make a small profit of around B3 million. This means it will take 167 years to recoup the original investment – hardly an exciting return on investment. “We expect income of B38 million per year – B13 million in savings on incinerator fuel and waste management costs, B16 million from fertiliser sales and B9 million form the sale of electricity,” Ms Phinyata explained. Not everyone in the meeting was ecstatic about the idea. To wide agreement, one asked, “Why don’t we spend

the B500 million solving the problem at the beginning instead of at the end?” She suggested the money might be better spent on distributing different-colour garbage bins so that people could separate garbage at home, and on educating the public about separtion and recycling. “Dangerous waste could be picked up according to a schedule announced in brochure sent out in advance by the waste management centre.” Ms Phinyata said these were also very good ideas and should be considered seriously by local authorities.

t what point does a protester cross the line? It is perhaps not just when placards are replaced with weapons, but maybe when anybody prevents others from exercising their basic human rights, threatening public safety until they get their own way. The Bangkok ‘protests’ show no sign of slowing down, and the cost in loss of tourism revenue is still being added up – industry losses currently stand at around B50 million, and are piling up every day. In the capital, hotel occupancy rates have dropped to around 40-50 per cent depending on location. In Phuket however, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket, hotel occupancy is very much the same as it has ever been

A

for this time of year – around 90 per cent. What is harder to work out though is the loss of confidence in Thailand as a tourist destination and the negative long-term knock-on effects for other regions in the kingdom. Many outsiders are unaware of how near or far the capital is from Phuket and other regions and the impact thereon. As last week’s awkward BBC interview with former PM Abhisit showed, there is certainly confusion from an international perspective regarding what is taking place in Bangkok. Although Phuket visitor numbers are currently on track, there is no saying what impact the almost constant stream of protests and blockades – some peaceful, some not – will have on people’s

confidence in visiting again in the future. So, although things may be as busy as ever in Phuket (which is good, we have to keep reminding ourselves), if the protests continue in the capital then it is only natural that people will start to think of Bangkok, and by extent, Thailand as synonymous with a high potential for potential danger. Phuket is already facing increased competition from its less built-up neighbours, with Bali and Phuket in a constant battle for visitor number supremacy. All it takes is a niggle at the back of a potential visitor’s head for people to give up trying to solve the conundrum of what exactly is the difference between both sides, for visitor numbers to plummet.

Safety first [Re. All safe after dramatic dive boat sinking near Phuket] In Thailand, there is no marine training centre in the Andaman Sea – the two marine training centres are in Samut Prakan and Pattaya. Therefore, all boat captains have no choice but to work one year at least with a boat operating company to be eligible to apply to get a helmsman boat licence, without proper training in marine regulation, safety and rescue. Boat operators in the Andaman Sea would be happy to have a marine training centre to get better skilled boat crews. Whistle-Blower Well Whistle-Blower aka Asterix, here’s a chance to do what you do. Dive on this wreck and photograph the damage, then report back. Let us know if the damage, as reported in other media, was in fact done by rope becoming entangled in the prop or if it was something else.

Personally, the rope story seems fishy. I can understand it stalling the motor, but a “sound” hull should not suffer catastrophic damage, this must have been a big hole for the boat to have sunk so quickly. By the way, are these islands under Region 5 jurisdiction? If they are then can we hear from the region commander if he will investigate? Laurie Howells Don’t expect much sympathy when it’s your turn for the flack, Whistle-Blower, ‘cause it ain’t going to happen. I suppose your boat can’t hit anything under the water, being the perfect law-abiding operator that you are? Adriane Walter-Scott

Traffic solutions [Re. Alternative Patong bus route plan may be scrapped] All of the “suggestions” on how to fix things completely ignore the obvious. If the authorities really want to improve things right now, they should hire 200 new highway police.

No money, you say? Paying for them from heavy, consistent fines, given to all offenders equally, would start solving these problems immediately and at no cost to the province. The fines can be collected from reckless drivers, driving the wrong way, speeding, no helmets, tailgating, unannounced traffic checkpoints, driver’s licenses, etc. Almost all the suggestions to improve roads, build tunnels, educate, and more will take years and boatloads of money. They could afford to hire many more police to control the traffic with all the money brought in through the fines. I am baffled why this very simple, effective solution isn’t used. Problems solved. Jim

A timely warning [Re. Four Swedes, Thai driver die in Phang Nga crash] How sad. Why I don’t drive in Thailand. In this case, it wouldn’t

have mattered anyway. I do ride in the front seat – looking for the looneys so I can warn the driver anyway. That’s saved my life a few times. LingYai45

A tech solution [Re. Irishman found lost in Thalang, with no memory of how he came to be there] The immigration desks at Phuket International Airport are fitted with cameras, taking mug shots of every new arrival. Surely it’s possible for face detection software to identify him? geoffphuket

Millions lost [Re. Pre-election voting cancelled in Phuket] The cancellation of the preelection also means the cancellation of the ban on sales of alcohol. It’s a shame they didn’t get the word out to all the business which were forced to close due to the alcohol ban. Especially as it was Australia Day. Millions of baht lost. Pjs

Three young brothers shot dead in south of Thailand T

hree brothers including a three-year-old have been shot dead in Thailand’s violence-plagued deep south and their pregnant mother injured, police said Tuesday. The boys, aged three, five and nine, were gunned down after returning from evening prayers Monday at a mosque in a volatile district of Narathiwat, one of three Muslimmajority southern provinces blighted by a decade-long insurgency. Their pregnant mother and father were also shot in the attack but survived, according to police in Bacho district. Colonel Pramote Promin, southern region military spokesman, said he could not confirm if the deaths were related to the rebellion against Thai rule. “We have to wait for the police investigation. But society must condemn the perpetrators of this incident,” he added. Local media reports said gunmen sprayed the Muslim family’s remote home with

More than 5,900 people – the majority of them civilians – have been killed in the conflict waged by shadowy insurgents seeking greater autonomy from Buddhist-

majority Thailand, which annexed the region a century ago. Around 40 people have been killed in the restive region so far this year, according to monitors Deep South Watch.

Dozens of children have been killed either by insurgents or security forces since the start of the bloodshed in 2004, prompting the United Nations to call for an end to violence against youngsters in the region.

Mental health workers in the south say children are increasingly showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder – including anger, introversion and fear – caused by living in the conflict zone. Local authorities say there are more than 5,000 orphans across the three southern provinces. The roots of the insurgency draw on long-standing anger at Thailand’s efforts to assimilate ethnic Malay Muslims and at a perceived lack of respect for local language, religion and customs. Peace talks between some rebel groups and Thai authorities have hit the buffers as ongoing political turmoil in Bangkok preoccupies the government. Rebels, including those from the shadowy Barisan Revolusi Nasional which is believed to command many of the grassroots fighters, have made a series of demands so that peace talks can continue. As yet there has not been a full response from the Thai side. AFP

Chinese horses fight in Lunar New Year battles Tom Hancock

ooves clash in midair, a stallion bites his opponent while delighted spectators cheer wildly – in southern China some saw in the Year of the Horse by watching the animals fight. For the residents of Tiantou, a remote village in the Guangxi region, the 500-yearold tradition which pits male horses against each other in a fight over a female was the only way to kick off the Lunar New Year. “Without horse fighting it wouldn’t feel like a new year,” said Pan Jianming, whose horse Little Black reared-up on its hind legs and bit its opponent’s neck to scoop victory in a competition this weekend. “He stood up and hit the other horse straight away,” Pan, a 31-year-old air conditioner repairman, said. “If he likes the female horse, it doesn’t matter how

New Indonesian volcanic eruption prevents search A VOLCANO IN WESTERN Indonesia that killed 15 people in a weekend eruption shot hot ash and rocks high into the air again Monday, halting a search for any more victims. Before they stopped their search, a rescue team found the charred wreckage of motorcycles buried under ash which they believe had been carrying some of those killed by Mount Sinabung’s eruption on Saturday. The weekend eruption was the first to claim any lives since Sinabung on Sumatra island rumbled back to life in September after lying dormant for several years, and sent vast clouds cascading down its slopes. On Monday Sinabung, which often erupts numerous times a day, spewed clouds of hot ash and rocks up to 2,500 metres into the air, the national disaster agency said. “For the safety of the rescuers we decided to temporarily halt the search operation at midday,” local rescue agency chief Rochmali, who goes by one name, told AFP. There were no reports of new casualties from the latest eruption.

Mt Sinabung eruption. Photo: AFP/Chaideer Mahyuddin He added that rescuers had yet to see any signs of life during their search on Monday and did not believe anyone else was still missing. However he said the team had found the wreckage of eight motorbikes believed to have been carrying 14 of those killed in Saturday’s eruption. The bikes were inside the five-kilometre danger zone, an area decreed by the authorities that was supposed to be off-limits, he added. Rochmali said officials were considering a permanent halt to the search and would decide later Monday. The weekend eruption

blanketed the countryside surrounding the volcano with grey ash. Most of the victims – who were mainly local tourists and included four high-school students – died instantly when they were cloaked in clouds of hot gas and ash. Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean. The country’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of eruptions in 2010. AFP

Horse fighting competitions held by the Miao – an ethnic group living in mountain areas of Southern China and Southeast Asia – date back more than five centuries, according to locals. The first battle is said to have been held to settle a dispute between two brothers who both hoped to marry the same woman. But the fights, held in dozens of small mountain villages in Southern China every year with prizes of up to 10,000 yuan (B54,370) have been condemned by animal rights groups. In 2010, Hong-Kong based Animals Asia called horsefighting a “horrific spectacle”, accusing the scraps of causing “abuse and suffering to animals in the name of entertainment”. The stallions are encouraged to fight by the presence of a female horse, who is kept metres away from the clashing pairs by a villager armed with little more than a stick. AFP

Al-Qaeda disavows ISIL group in Syria AL-QAEDA HAS DISavowed the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), whose members have been locked in deadly clashes with Syrian rebels, according to a statement posted on jihadist websites. Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri had already ordered the group in May 2013 to disband and return to Iraq, and announced that another jihadist group, the Al-Nusra Front, was AlQaeda’s official branch in war-torn Syria. The general command of Al-Qaeda rammed home the point in its late Sunday statement. “Al-Qaeda announces it is not linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, as it was not informed of its creation... [and] did not accept it,” the statement said. ISIL “is not a branch of Al-Qaeda, has no links to it, and the [Al-Qaeda] group is not responsible for its acts,” it added. Jihadists were initially welcomed by some rebels

in Syria’s conflict, but allegations of brutal abuses against civilians as well as rival opposition fighters has sparked a backlash. Rebels have accused ISIL of seeking to consolidate power rather than fighting the regime, and even suggested the group was serving the regime’s interests. Al-Qaeda also criticised ISIL’s mode of operations, saying jihadists should “be part of the nation” and avoid “any action that could lead to the oppression of jihadists, Muslims or non-Muslims.” Jihadists must “not rush to announce emirates and states... and impose them on people,” said the statement. In recent weeks, ISIL consolidated its grip on the northern city of Raqa, the only provincial capital to fall out of regime control since the outbreak of Syria’s uprising in March 2011, imposing their strict version of Sharia law on residents. Castaway rescued after a year lost in the Pacific Giff Johnson

S

porting a bushy beard and clutching a can of Coke, a castaway who says he survived more than a year adrift in the Pacific Ocean arrived in the Marshall Islands capital Majuro on Monday. A male nurse had to help the man previously identified as Jose Ivan down the gangplank of a police patrol boat after a 22-hour trip from the remote coral atoll where he washed ashore last week after apparently setting sail from Mexico on December 24, 2012. About 1,000 curious onlookers crowded the dock for a glimpse of the long-haired fisherman, who smiled and waved briefly before he was whisked away for a medical check-up at Majuro Hospital. The castaway told US ambassador Thomas Armbruster, who was acting as an interpreter for Marshall Islands authorities, that he was originally from El Salvador but had been living in

A Mexican castaway who identified himself as Jose Ivan walks with the help of a nurse after his discovery on Ebon Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Photo: AFP/Hilary Hosia Mexico for 15 years before his epic voyage. “He said he is a shrimp and shark fisherman,” Armbruster said Monday in Majuro minutes after talking to him. “He looked better than one would expect.” And foreign ministry officials said he told them during a debriefing that he was a 37-year-old whose full name was Jose Salvador Albarengo. He said he lived in Tapachula, near the Mexican

border with Guatemala, and worked for a company named Camoronera Dela Costa. Albarengo said he was on a shark-fishing expedition with a youth named Xiquel when strong winds blew them off course and they became lost. Albarengo said the boy, described as 15- to 18-years old, died a few weeks into the ordeal because he could not eat raw bird meat. The surviving fisherman was found disorientated and

clad only in ragged underpants last Thursday, after his 24-foot (7.3-metre) fibreglass boat f loated onto a reef at Ebon Atoll, the southernmost cluster of coral islands in the Marshalls. Unable to speak English, he communicated to his rescuers through pictures and gestures that he had survived the 12,500 kilometre odyssey by eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood when there was no rain. Marshall Islands immigration chief Damien Jacklick said authorities were still gathering information and the foreign affairs department planned to contact overseas officials to arrange his repatriation. “With the help of the US ambassador, we were able to obtain information on his family members in El Salvador and the United States,” he told AFP. “We hope this information will help us track down his family.” Medics plan to give Albarengo a thorough check before he is interviewed by

detectives. He spoke briefly to a Spanish interpreter via a faltering radio link over the weekend while still at Ebon Atoll and said he was keen to return home. “I feel bad,” he said of his physical and mental state. “I am so far away. I don’t know where I am or what happened.” Stories of survival in the vast Pacific are not uncommon. In 2006 three Mexicans made international headlines when they were discovered drifting, also in a small fibreglass boat near the Marshall Islands, nine months after setting out on a shark-fishing expedition. They survived on a diet of rainwater, raw fish and seabirds, with their hopes kept alive by reading the Bible. Castaways from Kiribati, to the south, frequently find land in the Marshall Islands after ordeals of weeks or months at sea in small boats. AFP

THE BIG LIST Weird advertisements Racist, sexist and downright offensive advertisements are – mostly – part of a bygone era. An era which makes you glad we’re living in 2014 and are no longer extras in the cast of Mad Men. Unfortunately, there are a few advertising execs that still believe the quickest and most effective way to capture people’s attentions is through shock and awe. Here are some such memorable mistakes.

Lovin’ the 7 incher – One of the most startling aspects of this 2009 Burger King campaign was that it came out in conservative Singapore. Although many companies go for the subliminal sex angle in their ads, often implying the illusion of oral sex with everything from ice lollies to bottles of tomato ketchup, this particular advertisement is shamelessly blatant. The irony is that the same people whom the ad probably appealed to were also likely to have been put off from ordering one for the same reason. Unmistakeably offensive – Featuring a Germany that seems to have been imagined by a daydreaming Nazi, it is easy to see why the 2008 ‘Unmistakeably German’ Citroen advertisement was pulled. In the advert, an Aryan-looking gentleman in leather gloves fences with another in snow-flecked mythical scenes of the German countryside, before taking to his new Citroen C5 car and seeing the sights; which included an eagle statue that looks suspiciously like the one seen on the Nazi emblem, road signs in Gothic scrip (the like of which was last seen in 1945), and the 1936 Berlin Olympic Stadium. Stockings and pig masks – In perhaps the clearest example of how ‘the message’ can be lost from the boardroom to the editing floor was a 2010 IKEA advertisement that showed in Scandinavia. The idea, apparently, was originally conceived to be nothing too outlandish and was to convey a young (throw in ‘sexy’ for good measure) woman who, embarrassed by her parents, wanted to move out and thus would need some quality, yet reasonably-priced furniture for her new digs. The problem, however, lay in them choosing to showcase the parents embarrassing ‘qualities’ with a scene of the mother in stockings and suspenders chasing the pig-mask-wearing father around the living room with a pitch fork... Why? Good to be Chinese – In recent years Thai advertising campaigns have come under fire for their perceived lack of racial sensitivity, from skin whitening creams ads that extol the virtues of ‘white skin’, to doughnut ads featuring a Thai woman ‘blacked up’ in chocolate. The latest ad from Central Festival Pattaya shows that Thai companies have not really understood that ethnic groups pretending to be other ethnic groups is not really all that funny. Their campaign for their Chinese New Year promotion, ‘Good to be Chinese’, shows a white woman in traditional Chinese garb, pulling back the corners of her temples to make her eyes more ‘Asian-like’. Owning company Central Pattana have since apologised. Need a boot – The advertising executives that were responsible for the Ford Figo ad that showed former Italian prime minister Silvio Bersculoni in the driving seat of a car with three scantilyclad women bound and gagged in the boot, were fired last year. The picture was part of a Ford Figo campaign that showed throughout India, despite that country reeling from highly publicised gang-rape cases at the time that put the spotlight on the way that large sections of women are treated in India. Other ads in the series included Michael Schumacher kidnapping Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso; and Paris Hilton winking, while the Kardashian sisters struggle to escape.

US fashion company goes pubic for V Day U

S clothing chain American Apparel has sparked controversy by putting mannequins sprouting pubic hair in the windows of their shop in New York’s boho Lower East Side. Passersby stopped to gawk, take photographs, chuckle or raise a horrified eyebrow at the stick-thin plastic models decked out in see-through bras and panties, with bushy bikini lines. Many people consider women’s body hair a private embarrassment requiring painful grooming at beauty salons, and find the display shocking and provocative. But American Apparel, which in the past has been accused of sexist and controversial marketing campaigns, said it was celebrating “natural beauty” in the run-up to the Valentine’s Day rush. “We invite passers-by to explore the idea of what is ‘sexy,’ consider their comfort with the natural female form – and perhaps most importantly – to come in and try on some of our favourite styles of the season,” said creative director Iris Alonzo. Photo: Viriditas bar and lives round the corner, called it a “cheap ploy” designed to drive up sales, but found it interesting for being a “little counter-culture.” “As someone who has some hair, it’s nice. It’s not earth shattering,” she said. The hairy mannequins are currently

on show only at one American Apparel store in lower Manhattan, and there are no plans to roll out the look elsewhere in New York or in the United States. Customers were divided on whether it would make them splurge on Apparel underwear – either for themselves or that special woman in their life this Valentine’s Day. “It’s not working for me but I did stop, and it did catch my attention, too. Maybe that’s their point,” said web developer Eric Chiu, 33, as he stopped to take some pictures. Marc Mangano, 41, an insurance broker, was transfixed. “I love it,” he said. “It’s just awesome,” a cigarette dangling out of his mouth as he stopped to take pictures. “They’re real-life looking to me. Although, most women today do shave a little more down there!” he added. Minjung, a student out jogging, also stopped to take a picture. But would it make her buy the underwear? No. “It’s pretty cool, but it is kind of weird,” she said, smiling. AFP

Japanese artist travels back in time WE WOULD ALL LIKE TO GO BACK and speak to a younger version of ourselves. Perhaps to dispense a bit of advice, or at least warn them how terrible Manchester United’s 2014 season is going to be. Japanese woman, Chino Otsuka, has managed to do that – well sort of. A master of photoshop, she has managed to splice her grown-up self into a number of old photographs featuring her as a young girl. Such scenes include outside a bakery, at a park, on the beach and at a train station, with the two versions of Otsuka staring at the camera. They are brilliantly done, though more than a touch creepy.

Thailand’s snake girl revealed to be a hoax A STORY A BOU T A N eight-year-old girl from Bangkok named “Mai Li Fay”, whose bottom half of her body is that of a snake recently surfaced on the web. According to top Thai medical expert “Dr Ping Lao”, Nong Mai Li Fay suffers from a rare syndrome known as Serpentosis Malianorcis. There is also a picture of the said girl in a red top, smiling and laying on her bed with her snake bottom half exposed. It’s reported that her condi-

income. Why it’s not true: While the person who created this false news seems to have some knowledge about Thai

superstition, what immediately gave the story away were the names of the girl and the doctor (and that’s why we put unnecessary quotation marks around them earlier). Their names sound Chinese while Thai names are usually long i.e. Sumati Sivasiamphai, Pimchanok Phungbun Na Ayudhya or Pornchai Sereemongkonpol. Secondly, the picture of the supposed snake girl is amateur Photoshop work. We rest our case. Bangkok Post thephuketnews

‘Missing women’ loom over the India Art Fair

L

arge black figures cast in steel loomed over the India Art Fair as it opened on Friday with the display of the eerie silhouettes seeking to highlight the country’s millions of “missing” women. The outdoor installation called M.I.S.S.I.N.G. by artist Leena Kejriwal is a visual response to alarming research showing a gaping gender gap in India, which has led to severe imbalances in some parts of the country. Caused by sex-selective abortion, infanticide and the death of girls through neglect, the issue is part of a national debate about women’s rights sparked by fresh scrutiny of sexual violence. The three outsized sculptures are meant to be “like sharp, black holes cut out of the sky. Holes into which millions of girls disappear from the face of this earth,” according to Kejriwal’s description of the project. India’s 2011 census data showed that just 914 girls are born nationwide per 1,000 boys – much behind the global benchmark of 952 – re-

The India Art Fair has been phenomenally successful since its first edition in 2008 and now draws leading local and international galleries and artists, as well as hundreds of thousands of members of the public. This year organisers signalled their intent to tackle some of the issues thrown up by the sweeping changes underway in the world’s biggest democracy, wrought by economic development and globalisation.

In 2010, the United Nations Development Programme said that Asia was “missing” about 96 million women – the vast majority in China and India – who died from discriminatory healthcare and neglect or who were never born at all. India has seen its women’s rights movement gain confidence over the past year in response to a string of horrifying sex crimes reported in the media, starting with the gangrape of a student on a New Delhi bus in December 2012. entral Festival Phuket put on its first ‘super party’ of the year with a star-studded Broadway-style musical performance and spectacular entertainment at the mall on February 1. Shanghai Love Story – The Musical was a sparkling celebration of Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, with an all-star cast of Thailand heartthrobs performing a musical version of Asia’s most popular classic period romantic drama. Starring “Aun” Witthaya Wasukraipaisarn, “Ja” Natta Wiranut, “JJ” Chakrit Kanokpojjananon and Nirut Sirichanya, Shanghai Love Story – The Musical is based on the massively popular

Hong Kong television drama, The Bund – a classic mobster series set in the 1920s. Phuket’s socialites and celebrities turned out in their best qipao (a traditional Chinese dress) and Gatsby attire for the 1920’s themed super party with a double bill of entertainment. After the curtain went down on the performance at the Grand Hall, the evening’s entertainment moved to the trendy Tablespoon Restaurant in the mall’s open air courtyard. Shanghai Love Story – The Musical was the first of six ‘super parties’ planned to take place at Central Festival Phuket this year, promising to transform Phuket’s most popular mall into the island’s top party venue. Putting two and two together THE TWO OF US J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

We have some people who stay here all day. They play a round of 18 holes and then have a drink. Then do it over again all day. It’s pretty relaxing

Both Pia Holm (top right) and Thomas Andersson (top left and below) enjoy the island sun at their Phuket Adventure Mini Golf establishment in Cherng Talay.

@thephuketnews

T

ucked away in a little corner of northern Phuket, under the shadow of resorts and at the top of a winding street that, until recently, was just a dirt road, lies one of Phuket’s top family destinations. Owned by Swedish couple Thomas Andersson and Pia Holm, Phuket Adventure Mini Golf is a labour of love from people who have always found an opportunity when others saw none. “There are more tourists here now than four years ago,” Holmes says about the Cherng Talay business which is near Surin beach. Usually the words “mini golf” (certainly to this American) conjure up visions of cheesy décor, tacky colours and outlandish themes – something akin to a fake amusement park. This place, however, mimics the look and feel of a traditional golf course but in a scaled-down version (for the record it’s a par 59 course with 2,500 sq m of artificial grass). “We have some people who stay here all day,” Holm says with a smile. “They play a round of 18 holes and then have a drink. Then do it over again all day. It’s pretty relaxing.” Though the mini golf drives people in, it’s the restaurant – dubbed “Off Course” – that keeps them onsite. The eatery serves some of the most underrated pizza (over 15 different kinds) on the island, along with 12 different kinds of burgers. Steaks and calzone round out the mains menu, with desserts like a cheesecake and a banana longtail (a grilled banana stuffed with chocolate, crushed cashew nuts served with ice cream) providing some reward for a round of golf. The couple opened Phuket Adventure Mini Golf in late 2011 after five years of owning the Bungalow Resort right on Bang Tao beach. Guests at their 50-room resort, a majority of whom were families, kept inquiring about family activities in the area. At the time, other than the beach and some general leisure activities that the resort provided, boredom could set in.

“There was nothing to do in the evening until we came along. Everybody was asking us what to do at night,” Andersson says. Today, the couple manage a thriving business, but managing a restaurant

and recreational space is nothing new for the Swedish duo. For 23 years, Andersson ran his own entertainment venue in his native Gothenburg, Sweden: a pool hall with a sports pub on the side that served Swedish cuisine. It was at this venue that Andersson met Holm in 2002 and the couple fell in love. The allure of a warm climate destination and easy living was too much for the couple and they decided to settle in Phuket in 2006 after selling the venue. But as long as they were together, it didn’t matter where they were. “You could send me to the North Pole selling ice cubes and I would do it to be together,” Andersson says.

PIADS students learn without walls

R

esidential trips, or as the Phuket International Academy Day School (PIADS) calls them, a Week Without Walls Off-Campus Learning (WWWOCL), play a pivotal role in the students’ curriculum. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) 6 and 7 have just returned from their trips; a visit to Thai Meuang National Park and three-day camping trip to Than Bok Khorani National Park in Krabi respectively. PYP 8 students went a four-day long Phuket Paddle Trip from Nai Yang to Layan Beach two weeks ago. Speaking of the benefits of WWWOCL, PIADS Middle School Principal Dan Magie said, “PIADS believes that WWWOCL reinforces learning through real-world experiences. “Off-campus learning is central to

the curriculum, central to the student experience at PIADS, and is a lot of fun. The annual WWWOCL provides bonding opportunities for students and

their teachers as they engage together in interdisciplinary experiences that extend the classroom.” PIADS Middle School students

also partook in various WWWOCL camps from November 25 to 29. As well as continuing to build playground equipment for the Yaowawit School in Kapong and teach the students there English, the Middle Years Programme 1 students also went camping, hiking, cycling, swimming, and even a touch of farming with the Yaowawit School students. MYP 2 students, meanwhile, explored the rainforest of Khao Sok National Park, where they slept on floating raft houses on a large lake. The MYP 3 and 4 students went on a “Moken (Sea Gypsy) Immersion Trip (pictured)”. The students camped in the Koh Surin National Park and visited the Moken village nearby to learn more about the culture, tales, history and way of life of the marginalised community.

KIS students speak for ‘House’ pride

K

ajonkiet International School Phuket (KISP) hosted a House public speaking event for its students on January 30. This ‘House Event’ was organised to not only give children an opportunity to experience public speaking, but also to allow children to foster a sense of pride and support for others in their House. KIS has a ‘School House System’, which includes three houses; Shakespeare, Churchill and Einstein, across the whole school body. All children and teachers are allocated a House at KIS. Throughout the school year children compete in different events to allocate points for their Houses. Churchill’s topic for the public speaking event was ‘My Favourite Place’; Einstein’s topic was ‘Animals’, and Shakespeare’s topic was ‘Homework’. The winning House this time round was Churchill.

Building big arms FIGHT FAT WITH PAT

Patrick du Preez editor3@classactmedia.co.th

W

hen starting out everyone wants to build those biceps, build a big chest and build rock hard abs. This of course does not happen overnight. When working on your biceps or triceps you cannot completely ignore the other major muscle groups as they indirectly help you develop your overall physique. For example when doing a simple bench press you are not only training your chest/ pectoralis muscles but at the same time you are working your triceps directly. It’s thus wise to combine certain muscle groups when designing your programme ensuring a rest-day inbetween. It is interesting to note that the triceps actually makes up two thirds of the upper arm size yet many bodybuilders focus on their biceps. When working out with heavier weights you are actually breaking down the muscle tissue. Your body responds by repairing the damaged tissue and over compensating. The damaged tissue is repaired and more is added making your muscle bigger and stronger. We’re going to look at a four week programme on how to build bigger arms. In

this programme you will be training other muscle groups that will assist you to develop your overall physique and make your muscles grow larger and stronger while adding lean muscle to the rest of your body. This programme is a three-alternative day workout. Monday - Biceps and Back, Wednesday - Legs and Shoulders and Abs, Friday - Triceps and Chest. Train with heavier weights if you want to get the results. Training too light will certainly not help you much. At the same time it’s pointless if you train too heavy where you can’t complete the first or second set . The aim is to complete at least 8-12 reps per set. By changing the exercises every two weeks but targeting the same muscle group it will prevent your muscles from stagnating as they get used to the exercises. To track your progress it would be wise to take measurements, weigh yourself, take photos and keep a training diary. This will also keep you motivated. If possible find a training buddy. Here is an example programme you could follow for week 1 and week 2. In week 3 and 4 increase the sets to four sets:

Valentine’s puzzle card LET’S PLAY Yvon van Kesteren editor@classactmedia.co.th

1

I

n today’s digital world we hardly send any postcards by regular mail any more. But everybody still (even more so now) loves to receive a personalised handwritten card. So this year, make that extra effort and send a real card for your Valentine. You can make it even more special by cutting the card into small pieces so it becomes a puzzle, great fun for the sender as well as the receiver. I t will definitely add to the ‘mystery’ that is surrounding the sending of Valentine’s cards.

Age: From 1.5 years What you need:

Heavyweight paper (A5 size) Crayons, colouring pens or pencils Computer Printer Scissors Ruler

Preparation:

2

Search online for a Valentine colouring page you like and print it off on heavyweight paper.

Play:

Have your child colour in the card and write a personal message or name on the front or back of the card. Divide the card into pieces of the same size using a ruler. You can decide the size of the puzzle pieces, bearing in mind the receivers’ age. The smaller the puzzle pieces, the more difficult the puzzle becomes. Cut out the pieces and your card is ready to be sent off. Originally from The Netherlands, Phuket-based Yvon van Kesteren is the mother of two girls.

4

@thephuketnews

3

Add-ons for more fun play:

Wear some red lipstick and put a ‘real’ kiss on your card. Did you know that you can send a secret message using a white crayon? Write your name or message with a white crayon on white paper and the message will not show until the receiver paints over it with water colour paint (don’t forget to mention the instructions or only a small hint!). Your kids can also make their own drawing on the card and/or decorate it with glitter, stamps, or stickers. Add a funny line to your card; “You are the icing on the cake” on a card with a cake or cupcakes, “I’d always pick you” on a card with a bouquet of flowers, or “You mean the world to me” on a card with a world map on it.

5

Clean up:

As this is not a messy activity there is not much to be cleaned up. Only the crayons/colouring pens and the scissors need to stored again.

Educational:

There are a few ways to make this activity educational. Choose how depending on the age of your children. A few ideas are: Develop scissor cutting skills of your kids by letting them cut the cards into pieces. Have your child write the cards so they can practise their writing. Talk about the different kinds of love and ask your child why they love specific persons in their live. Tell your kids the story of Saint Valentine and the origins of Valentine’s day.

Breezy times in Patong central Sam Wilko wilkosam@yahoo.com

Clockwise from top: A chef hard at work; some of the sumptuous seafood; amazing appetisers.

H

oliday Inn Patong is one of the most popular resorts on Phuket Island; it has a motivated and polite team that delivers the goods to repeat guests – many of whom come in families as its kids’ hotel facilities are more than excellent. No, this is not an advertorial: it’s a well-acknowledged verity that this Holiday Inn Resort is immensely popular – and it’s no wonder that its signature restaurant Sam’s Steaks, is constantly off-and-on (more frequently ‘on’) the most popular eatery in Sin City at the Trip Advisor website. That’s got a lot to do with Morgan Layberry, the resort’s Executive Assistant Manager and his endless

enthusiasm for getting things right. So it’s with high expectations that we head off to the resort, having first parked on Beach Road and subsequently being informed by several Nepalese street traders in halting Thai that our car wouldn’t look the same if we left it there for more than 10 minutes. So the local tuk-tuk Mafia is still in the strong-arm game then, despite protestations of the opposite. Ours what not question why; ours was to make the 6.30pm rendezvous with Morgan and after 20 minutes of edging in between Thai boxing trucks and clearly inebriated jay walkers in Patong’s one-way system, we hesitatingly edge into the parking lot in the Busakorn wing of the resort. A quick stroll through the grounds and we’re installed in the Sea Breeze buffet where, perhaps unique to southern Thailand, kids (up to 12 and accompanied by their parents) eat for free. It’s a colourful affair with brightly hued cutlery, placemats, and napkins – definitely a hit with children of all nationalities so the little ones tuck into prawns, sushi by the barrelful (a recent discovery) and salad. Sea Breeze, to sum up in one word, is ‘fun’. The wait service here is cheerful and everything is just fine and dandy. The Nicoise salad I sampled was sensational – with pan-seared tuna chunks instead of flaky soggy fish that

is the norm for most versions of this dish – and dining with serious seafoodlovers I tried snips of crab meat, gargantuan shrimps, mussels, and a whole A-list of heart-stoppers that were simply delicious, but I later repented and sampled the healthier mackerel and braised lamb shank that was, frankly, one of the better versions of this dish on the island. Of course, as with every respectable Phuket buffet, the culinary themes change with every night and soon Holiday Inn Resort Patong will run the seafood buffet (B899++) twice weekly with Mediterranean buffets and other arrangements in between. Simply put, it’s a class destination for hungry families. With a great central location and two spacious car parks it’s a cinch for family dining in a safe, hassle-free environment with healthy food and a comprehensive wine list that includes several good-quality choices from both Old World and New World sources. The Jacob’s Creek put me in a gregarious enough mood to discuss the weather with a belligerent traffic cop; but not a car-scratching tuk-tuk driver – no way… Sea Breeze Cafe & Terrace; Holiday Inn Phuket Resort and Hotel, 52 Thaweewong Road, Patong; open for breakfast buffet 06.30 to 10.30, dinner buffet 18.30 to 21.30; 076-370-200; phuket.holiday-inn.com.

ost people who only read about exotic places never realise that a balance usually exists between tradition and modernity. This balance teeters between glorious skyscrapers and dingy backstreets, famous attractions and secret underground corners. A recent trip to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur highlighted this balance, as the “I Love KL” bandwagon pulled me through the streets of Chinatown and to the very pinnacle of the city.

Looking out over most of Kuala Lumpur, speckled with everything from colonial buildings to residential high-rises to one of the most beautiful structures in the world, the twin Petronas Towers, it’s easy to say that Menara Tower is one of the biggest attractions of the city. The tower reaches 421 metres from pedestal to the top of the antenna and features two restaurants, one of which – Atmosphere 360 – rotates and gives diners spectacular views of the city.

At night, with the Petronas Towers dazzling in the background, this is easily one of the best man-made wonders of the world. Tourists can also enjoy an aquarium, Formula One simulators, an XD Theater, and a small animal zone (not big enough to call a zoo). But there’s one Malaysian feature that quickly becomes a theme in the

country: shopping! When you first reach the pedestal at Menara KL, the Formula One store and a gift shop offer small knick knacks for tourists. On the observation deck, the wall is lined with souvenir booths that sell everything from T-shirts to makeup. It’s also easy to get in touch with your

inner Sherlock Holmes while looking out from the observation deck of the tower. Because of Menara KL’s location, it is a very convenient spot for engineers and businessmen to scout for potential properties. Overhearing a conversation between two men – a tour guide and someone who seemed to be a building investor – I learned that several properties in Kuala Lumpur, like many other places around the world, feature massive halffinished projects that have simply run out of funding. Pointing at one of these properties that surrounded a small body of water not far from where we stood, the tour guide explained that the project was to be a beautiful bus station before the owners ran out of money trying to work their way around the water. “It’s a story that, sadly, happens far too often,” said the businessman.

Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

One of the highlights of KL is the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, owned and run by architectural modeling company Arch. The gallery is famous for their three-dimensional model of Kuala Lumpur, which features scaleddown replicas of the entire city centre, down to the exact number of windows on buildings. Andrew J.K. Lee, the founder of Arch, one of the biggest model-making companies in Asia, personally walked our group through the gallery to view some of the other models being made by their team of steady-handed artists. Once that was over, we got a chance

Chinese who opened his stall just five years ago. He tells me that most of his customers are tourists because of the RM4 (B40) price for a plate and a soft drink (a bargain by Phuket standards). The side streets of Petaling Street are full of micro-economies that include everything from butcher shops to fisheries to vegetable stalls. And the cats love every bit of it.

to put together our own model using tweezers, glue, and teak wood – a simple but fun activity perfect for kids and adults. The scale city model, which is housed in a 115-year-old building, is a labour of love for Lee. He began several years ago by first creating a walking map of the city, which took a year to make. Now, roughly 2,000 tourists walk through the gallery’s doors everyday, most of whom end up dazzled.

Petaling Street

Wandering around the shops of Petaling Street (known in Malay as Jalan Petaling), KL’s biggest Chinese market area, smells attack you. It’s mostly a mixture of money, stress, and chicken. Tourists flock to this area to get some of the cheapest buys in the city, but the best stuff – as in all Chinatowns around the world – is being made in small back-alley kitchens. Nephews and cousins serve food made by aunts, uncles, and grandmothers to a largely touristy crowd of people who order, more or less, the same thing all the time: chicken and rice, a noodle dish, or fish. You don’t need tour guides to find a great place to eat in Petaling Street, just follow your nose to the nearest smell. Many stalls sell square-shaped slices of greasy beef that, if lucky, would only make you half-sick – iron stomachs only need apply. It is preferable to eat at a stall with chairs since this is a big indicator that people actually eat here. My favourite

is the nasi ayam (chicken rice) from a small stall in a side street here, made by chef Moy – a talented Malaysian

Wearable tech in 2014 and beyond TECH TALK Byron Noel byroncnoel@gmail.com

Engineers have already created headmounted gear for paraplegics, which allows them to control robotics... with their mind

Clockwise from top: Google Glass and Galaxy Gear; Pebble Stone watches; Oculus Rift.

T

his will be the year that wearable technology starts to go mainstream. Many will have heard about devices such as the Samsung Galaxy smart watch, or even Google Glass, but what many don’t realise is that this is just the beginning of what we’ll see in 2014. No, I don’t think we’ll be seeing Iron Man suits or Robocops on the streets soon (much to my disappointment), but things are certainly going to change. Already we have seen a few brands of smart watches come out, some of which, like the Pebble Steel, look quite promising. There have even been rumours of a Galaxy glass project from Samsung, likely to be released this year. The estimates are that around 90 million wearable devices will be shipped in 2014 alone, showing us just how technologically advanced the future will become. The thing is, it’s not just a business. It’s the natural evolution of technology into our lives – like it or not. Personally, the technology that excites me the most, as a gamer, is surely rebooted Virtual Reality. The Occulus Rift has made great strides in this arena, with its headmounted setup, and I am eagerly looking forward to a release this year (fingers crossed). Taking this one step further, engineers have already created head-mounted gear for paraplegics, which allows them to control robotics... with their mind. Couple this with something like Sony’s exoskeleton technology,

and you have potentially given movement to the previously paralysed. Or, couple it with current drone and robotics technology and you can potentially be in two places at once! Iron Man and Robocop suddenly don’t seem all that far-fetched, especially with us looking for safer ways to explore places such as Mars in the near future. Still, such things are a few years off and right now I still think that the Google Glass is kind of creepy. Fortunately I will have no

choice but to get used to it as this kind of technology is already taking off in the sporting world. I just won’t be wearing them any time soon. A smart watch just happens to be fantastic at keeping and displaying fitness data, and as the technology gets cheaper we are only going to find more uses. Maybe my watch will finally be able to tell me when I’ve had too much of the Phuket sun. Come on in Byron Noel, your time is up!

Wicked fun The Wolf of Wall Street FILM REVIEW J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

Starring: Leonardio DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Rob Reiner, and Jon Bernthal Director: Martin Scorsese Running time: 179 minutes

@thephuketnews

T

he Sermon on the Mount has got nothing on Leo spewing his mesmerising lines in The Wolf of Wall Street. The entire film, like some kind of dream sequence sponsored by dollar signs, reveals a twisted side of American business. Yes, there was once Gordon Gecko, whose obsession for the green produced ruthless actions with brutal consequences. But Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) celebrates his greed almost to the point of virtue, with flash and midgets, making us feel guilty for “not participating” in his illegal practices. At no point do audiences become bored of this dog and pony show as we enjoy a drugfuelled ride of a financial house of cards, knowing full well how this performance will end. The story is based off of Belfort’s autobiography, in which he tells of his time as a stockbroker who runs an ethically-challenged firm on Wall Street. The film is less about business than hedonism, a transformation of a potential family man who goes to the extreme to fulfill

appetites that are equally ostentatious and unsustainable. It’s another Scorsese classic, with the surprise winning performance by Jonah Hill as Belfort’s right-hand man Donnie Azoff a cherry on top. In Hill, Scorsese has found his new Joe Pesci. A utility actor that can warrant hate and sympathy at the same time, with a dash of funny. Throw in some iconic scenes, including a “crawl” through a Long Island neighborhood, and Hill is just two Scorsese films away from matching the legendary goodfella. DiCaprio, as the De Niro in this whole adventure, is completely believable as a selfabsorbed alpha male, hellbent on success but with a touch of naivete about how law enforcement does things. There’s a story here, but it’s told through the actions not words. The exposition period, when the plot is explained to the audience, barely exists. Scorsese simply shows us how Belfort goes from rookie broker to outof-work salesman to his rise as a financial kingpin to his eventual crash and burn.

There’s a clear trajectory that, despite his sexual appetite and drug addictions, makes the audience root for Belfort, if only to see what could happen to a human on the edge. There’s something almost likable about him, especially during his company speeches where the film becomes like a church service complete with a prophet of greed, a collection plate of lies, and a captivated audience ready to throw midgets for fun and shave off all their hair. In recent interviews, Scorsese has put across his stance that the film is more of a criticism than a celebration of the excesses of wealth and illegal financial practices, arguing that The Wolf of Wall Street is supposed to make us hate these perps, especially since this same story may very well continue to this day. Criticism or not, the film does have one common thread that pushes everything together: nothing is free. Belfort’s soul is not, Azoff’s appetite is not, even the love of all the wives involved and betrayed are not. This is the tragedy of The Wolf of Wall Street, since the audience’s love for this film is free – and Scorsese knows it.

Finding freedom in London

T

David Brook editor@classactmedia.co.th

Historically, a Freeman had other privileges, including specific voting rights in Parliamentary and Civil elections, but also the right to herd sheep over London Bridge; exemption from City tolls; wear a drawn sword; exemption from being press-ganged; be hung with silken rope if convicted of murder; be drunk and disorderly without fear of arrest

From top: Musician Bob Geldof is just one of many celebrities given the Freedom of the City of London, a lengthy list that includes our own David Brook.

he City of London is unique, a city within a city governed by some 700 mayors spanning a thousand years, a city so old no surviving record of its’ birth exists. But traditions remain. One of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies is the granting of the Freedom of the City of London, dating back to Henry III’s reign in 1237. Today, whilst largely symbolic , it represents a unique piece of London’s history. From The Middle Ages, the Freedom was invaluable, enabling the holder to carry out a particular trade or craft as a member of one of the Guild or Livery Companies. The Freedom was essential for those who made their living in the City, and certain groups were compelled, on pain of prosecution, to be Free of the City, including Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Sheriffs; Corporation employees; retail traders, licensed brokers and victuallers. In 1835, the Freedom was extended beyond Livery Company members to people living or working in the City, but to this day Councilmen, Aldermen (including the Lord Mayor) and Sheriffs, as well as Liverymen, all still have to be City Freemen. Historically, a Freeman had other privileges, including specific voting rights in Parliamentary and Civil elections, but also the right to herd sheep over London Bridge; exemption from City tolls; wear a drawn sword; exemption from being press-ganged; be hung with silken rope if convicted of murder or treason; be drunk and disorderly without fear of arrest; and be married in St. Paul’s Cathedral. Many people assume that the Freedom is purely an honorary award. The Honorary Freedom is indeed the highest honour the City can bestow, but it is rarely granted and usually to Heads of State or figures of global standing, a list that includes Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandella, Bob Geldof, Horatio Nelson, Michael Caine, Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, and JK Rowling to name but a few. The vast majority, however, are admitted by other means, many associated with the City Livery Companies. Before 1835, to become a City Freeman you first had to become a Freeman of a City Livery

Company. Today there are 109, the oldest is The Worshipful Company of Mercers (established 1394); while the newest is The Company of Educators (2013). In 1515, an Order of Precedence for the existing 48 Livery Companies was established. The Worshipful Company of Brewers’ ranks 14th, having received its Charter from Henry VI in 1438. Today, the Brewers’ Company remains close to its’ trade; while others are now purely charitable foundations. Admittance as a City Freeman requires a formal Ceremony in the Guildhall Court Room; reading a declaration, signing The Declaration Book, receiving the carefully scribed Freedom Certificate; and being formally welcomed as as “Citizen of London” . I was admitted and welcomed in 1994 as “Citizen and Brewer of London”, designating me as a Freeman of both the City and the Worshipful Company of Brewers. Maybe one day I may have the opportunity to herd my sheep over London Bridge with my fellow Freemen – I certainly would be in illustrious company.

Expansion sees YFH accept girls FOOTBALL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th

E

xpansion plans are underway at Phuket’s Youth Football Home (YFH) as they open their doors to young girls for the first time. “We thought it would be a good idea to also provide a home for girls’ who have potential to be good sportswomen,” said Dr Cheung Kam-wing, the managing trustee of the organisation. Occupying eight rai of land, organisers plan to open the doors of a brand-new building which will house the girls – aged from eight to 10 – and increase the number of total children from 32 to 64. Opened in May 2006, the YFH is essentially an orphanage for homeless children that provides shelter, schooling and a focus on sport, particularly football. Kids whose families are unable to provide for them are also accepted into the school, where they are raised until adulthood. “They grow up in a family atmosphere and learn social skills and get a good education until they are in a position to look after themselves,” Dr Cheung said. Eight years after first opening their doors, the home has ‘graduated’ their first few boys and helped get them a university education. Some of the children have gone on

Organisers had planned to recruit most of the girls during two sports clinics, one in Bangkok and another in Phuket. However, the political crisis that has recently rocked the city has forced them to cancel their clinic in the capital. The Phuket sports clinic will still take place on April 5 to 7 at the YFH’s facilities in Thalang. “I understand that the girl’s football scene is growing worldwide. Thailand has sent a representative team in the international tournaments,” Dr Cheung said, “this could be a good opportunity

for female youth in Thailand.” From their experience recruiting applicants for the boy’s programme, Dr Cheung said he expects most of the girls to come from the areas surrounding Bangkok and further north. The changes will bring an increase in staff, although YFH hopes to train the young girls and boys together until they each hit puberty, after which they will train separately. “At that age [8 to 10] girls are not that physically different from boys. We are planning to have the girls in before the beginning of the school year in May,” Dr Cheung said. For more information on the Youth Football Home or to apply, visit their website: yfhphuket.com

Ronins draw with Chonburi of TPL FOOTBALL WITH THE RECENT 1-1 draw against Thai Premier League-side Chonburi FC, the Ronins have shown they can hang with the big boys during this pre-season. Last Saturday night’s game (February 1), which took place at Surakul Stadium, saw several chances by Phuket FC, one of which hit the crossbar. Chonburi struck first in the second half with a goal by Brazilian Thiago Cunha off a free kick just outside the box. Moments later, a swift Phuket counterattack caught out Chonburi when a long ball pass connected with new signing Ney Fabiano who finished off the header

and levelled the score. This is the fifth exhibition match for Phuket FC, having defeated Nakhon Sri Heritage, Forward FC (from Vladivostok), Brunei DPPM, and Ratchaburi Mithbol FC. Phuket FC will face-off against Pattaya FC on February 23 in the first match of the Yamaha League 1 2014 season.

Laguna stays atop league with tight victory over tough Village CRICKET

L

aguna extended their lead atop the Jones Lang LaSalle Cricket league on Sunday (February 2) by defeating The Village in a match that almost turned into the upset of the season at the Alan Cooke Ground (ACG). Laguna went into the match expected to win comfortably with The Village languishing at the bottom of the table. Laguna lost the toss and was forced to field – with Laguna having always preferred to bat first, this was perhaps a tactical move by The Village captain Craig Patterson which almost paid dividends. The Village opened with Mark Whetton and Martin Foster getting off to an early flying start. However, things looked like they might be heading in the usual direction for The Village when Whetton was caught at square leg in the 5th over for 9 runs. Peter Coceani was the

The partnership between Foster and Coceani turned into one of the best for The Village with Coceani accumulating 34 runs and Foster a very well played 61 runs. Expectations were high from the next batsmen in Divan Mydeen – a recent signing by The Village from ICC. Divan never quite settled in, but managed to post 11 runs. The Village managed to bat out their innings setting a respectable 173 runs with

good batting performances from Simon Pettigrew (25 runs) and Mark Ashman (17 runs) and some uncharacteristic ‘sloppy’ fielding from Laguna with at least 7 missed easy opportunities. Perhaps somewhat underestimating The Village, Laguna’s captain, Stuart Reading, elected to rotate his batting line up and elevated some of his strike bowlers up the order. Roly Cooper and Manish Sadarangani opened the batting for Laguna with neither really managing to settle in. Sadarangani was dismissed for 4 runs in the 4th over and Cooper on 12 runs in the

13th over. Things were looking dire for Laguna when the next five batsmen (Bhatt, Sami, Rehman, Samaan and Youseff) only managed 60 runs between them, leaving Laguna languishing on 7 for 90 after 22 overs and The Village sensing a major upset with even a few of their players commencing some early celebrations. Next to the crease for Laguna were Shoeib Mushtaq and Stuart Reading. Mushtaq managed to survive a couple of early scares and started steadying things accumulating some good early runs. Reading, however was

Sausages for safety INDY DIVER Brent T. Madison brent@madisonimages.com

I

recently read that jet-ski on swimmer strikes are the second-most-common reason for foreigner fatalities in Phuket. Last week, while diving off the southern side of Surin beach, at least five jet skis roared directly above us while we were still in shallow water. Every certified scuba diver should own their own gear – at least the basics – but I am surprised at how the most important piece of safety equipment is often overlooked when divers rush out to buy their kit for the first time. Owning a surface marker buoy (SMB) – commonly known in Phuket as the “safety sausage” – should be the

dive sites around. Made of coated nylon or vinyl, a brightly colored safety sausage is a simple tube-like device deployed with air from one’s regulator. When inflated, it shoots up to the surface with a line trailing below. Bobbing on top of the water, it is a warning to nearby boats and jet skis that a diver is near the surface. Should a diver be separated from their group, they are more easily spotted between the waves with an SMB. “Diver Below” or a similar message is often printed on the side with a yellow backdrop for visibility. Rolled up, they store easily in a BCD pocket and conveniently take less than a minute to deploy. It’s easy to use but practice makes perfect. With prices ranging from B300 to B600, a Phuket diver can’t afford to be without this important tool.

Honeycomb morays, banded shrimp and an adult turtle were highlights for me. Park at the southern end of Surin beach above Salt and Plaa restaurants.

Chelsea raid robs Man City of home comforts FOOTBALL

C

helsea defied Manchester City’s recent form with a superb 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium last Monday (January 3) that injected fresh intrigue into the Premier League title race. Imperious in recent weeks, Manchester City were looking to reclaim top spot from Arsenal and move six points above Chelsea, but it was the visitors who prevailed thanks to a 32nd-minute bullet by Branislav Ivanovic. City had won all 11 of their previous home league games this season, losing only to European champions Bayern Munich on home turf, while it was the first time they had failed to score at the Etihad in the league since November 2010. Despite the result, Mourinho played down his side’s chances of winning the league, insisting City were

A mistake by Kolo Toure prevented Liverpool from strengthening their grip on

fourth place in the Premier League table as they drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion on last Sunday (January 2). Liverpool were seeking to move four points clear of fifth-place Everton and they took the lead through Daniel

Sturridge at The Hawthorns, only for Toure to gift West Brom a 67th-minute equaliser by passing the ball straight to Victor Anichebe. The Nigerian striker accepted the gift to level the scores, leaving Liverpool with only a two-point cushion in fourth place and lifting Pepe Mel’s West Brom a point clear of the relegation places. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s new-look line-up crashed to a 2-1 defeat at Stoke City last Saturday (January 1) as they squandered another opportunity to make up ground on the Premier League’s top four. United fielded Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and record signing Juan Mata in their starting XI for the first time, but an eighth defeat of the campaign left the champions six points below the Champions League places. It was Stoke’s first win over United since December 1984 and saw them climb to

Kiwis look for home advantage RUGBY SEVENS

EPIC CLASH On their way to an unprecedented third straight Six Nations title, Wales will have to get past Ireland tomorrow (February 8) in Dublin. Photo: erase

Phillips wary of Irish ‘icon’ O’Driscoll SIX NATIONS

W

ales scrum-half Mike Phillips is looking forward to going up against an “icon of world rugby” in Brian O’Driscoll when the Six Nations champions face Ireland in Dublin tomorrow (February 8). O’Driscoll is in his final season before retirement, making it a campaign of ‘lasts’ for the Ireland great. This weekend’s Lansdowne Road clash has added spice in that Wales coach Warren Gatland, who as Ireland boss gave O’Driscoll his Test debut, dropped the star centre for last year’s British and Irish Lions

series finale against Australia in Sydney. The New Zealander, given leave of absence from his ‘day job’ to coach the combined side, went for an all-Welsh midfield pairing of Jonathan Davies and Jamie Roberts. Gatland’s move provoked a huge outcry in Ireland, which was barely stilled in some quarters by the fact the Lions won 41-16 to take the series 2-1. Both Gatland and O’Driscoll have insisted the incident is well and truly behind them, with the Wales boss angered by suggestions, put to him again after last weekend’s 23-15 win over Italy, that tomorrow’s fixture

in Dublin is some sort of ‘grudge’ match. Instead, the prevailing mood in the Welsh camp is one of great respect. “He’s a world-class player. Everyone knows that, and I just hope he has one of those lesser games on the weekend!” Phillips said. Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards, a member, along with Gatland, of the 2009 Lions backroom staff assembled by then head coach Ian McGeechan was also in no doubt of O’Driscoll’s quality. “He’s not a huge man, but it is the way he prepares for games, his intensity, his toughness, his mental hardness. You can see he is very,

very professional. Meanwhile, regular captain Sam Warburton will return to Wales’s starting XV for tomorrow’s match. The back-row forward, who began his comeback from a shoulder injury by coming off the bench against Italy in Wales’s opening 23-15 victory over Italy at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium last weekend, replaced Justin Tipuric at openside flanker in the team announced by coach Warren Gatland on Tuesday (February 3). Last year, Ireland denied Wales a Grand Slam right at the very start of the Six Nations with a 30-22 success at the Millennium Stadium

where O’Driscoll was among the try-scorers. Now Ireland, fresh from a convincing 28-6 home win over Scotland, will be looking for a repeat display. Wales are now bidding to become the first side in the history of the Six Nations’ various guises to win three successive outright championships. The Welsh have won three of their last four meetings against Ireland, including a 2011 World Cup quarter-final success in New Zealand. “We’ve had some big matches against them over the years. We’ve had historic matches, and that is what it is all about. It is only good for the game,” Phillips added. AFP

Beckham to own football franchise in Miami FOOTBALL

DAVID BECKHAM CONFIRMED this week that he will own a football team in Miami, boosting further his global profile and that of Major League Soccer. It has been one of the worst-kept secrets in world football that the former England star intended to exercise his option to buy an MLS club and bring it to Miami, with the plan contingent on a deal for a privately funded stadium, US media report.

The former midfielder, 38, who made his name at Manchester United and later played for Real Madrid, AC

Milan and LA Galaxy, held a press conference Wednesday (February 5) at an art museum in downtown Miami. The team will be ready for action in 2016 or 2017, the Miami Herald said. Beckham, who retired in 2013, was given the opportunity to purchase a team at a discount, reportedly US$25 million, as part of the 2007 deal that lured him to play for the Galaxy. His investment group in the deal includes Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure and British businessman Simon Fuller. The superstar’s latest move has

been anticipated for months, but it has been held up reportedly by trouble finding a suitable site in the city for a stadium that would hold in the region of 25,000 spectators. Beckham’s move into ownership of an MLS team represents a boon to the league and its drive to increase football’s popularity in the United States. MLS also has their sites on launching a second franchise in New York and another in Orlando next year as part of an aggressive expansion plan. AFP

NEW ZEALAND HOPE TO use home advantage to regain top spot when the IRB World Sevens roadshow rolls into Wellington today (February 7). The reigning champions, who claimed a record series 11th title last year, head to their capital on 77 points, one behind South Africa, who have won two of the four competition rounds held this season. New Zealand have only one tournament win to their credit, the opening round in Australia, and will be desperate to succeed in front of their home crowd after suffering a shock loss to Kenya here in last year’s semi-finals. “The timing is perfect to come home,” Kiwi captain DJ Forbes said. “We’ve been in a few finals and tripped up so hopefully on home soil we can knuckle down and get the job done.” First the team will have to negotiate a tough pool including France, Spain and Fiji, who handed the Kiwis a 44-0 thumping – their worst ever sevens loss – on the way to winning the Dubai. South Africa’s pool comprises England, who won the Wellington tournament last year, Wales and Portugal. Australia face Tonga and Samoa along with a Kenyan team looking to repeat their feats of last year, when they finished runners-up in the feelgood story of the tournament. The final pool is made up of Scotland, Argentina, Canada and the United States. Pool matches are played today (January 7), with suddendeath games contested tomorrow (January 8). Each side plays its three pool opponents once, with pool winners and runners-up advancing to the Cup quarterfinals on Sunday (January 9). AFP thephuketnews
