put out the inferno at the Chokchai Furniture Store, was a 10-year-old boy. All the four people who died were found trapped on the top floor of the three-storey building, firefighters said. They were named as Mongkon Ruanchai, 43, and his wife Nutjaree Saengprakone, 43, 10-year-old Teerawut Ruanchai, the couple’s adopted son, and Chatchaya Kanpat, 59, a
friend of the furniture store’s owner. The owner, Janhom Jakkaew, 51, survived by jumping from a secondfloor window of the building. She broke a leg and an arm on landing and was taken to Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Her shouts alerted a nearby policeman, who raised the alarm and called for the fire engines. Rofia Ninsawit, 44, Ms Janhom’s sister-in-law, told police that Ms Jan-

Believing the others were following her, she smashed a window on the second floor and jumped. But it was probably already too late for the four people sleeping on the top floor of the building.

On this occasion Ms Chatchaya came with her. Every time she came, she would stay in the building. When fire-fighters were eventually able to enter the building they found Mr Mongkon, Mrs Nutjaree and the boy huddled together on the bed in their room. Initial reports indicated that the fire was started by an electrical short on the ground floor and spread within minutes throughout the building, fuelled by the large amounts of wooden and plastic chairs, tables and other furniture stored on every floor of the large shop. As forensic experts combed through the wreckage the following morning, Governor Maitri Inthusut, along with Pol Maj Gen Krajang Suwannarat, Deputy Commissioner of Police Region 8, came to survey the damage. On Monday morning (August 4) fire broke out again at the store. Neighbours called the fire brigade at 9:30am after they saw smoke once again coming out of the second floor of the building. Fire-fighters went back into

the building and tracked the smoke to a pile of mattresses in one of the bedrooms. The fire was swiftly extinguished, but it was decided to keep a watch on the place in case any other remaining hotspots in among the piles of charred furniture burst into flame. The fire is the deadliest in Phuket since the Tiger Bar and Disco complex on Patong’s Bangla Rd took the lives of four people and injured 11 others on August 17, 2012. The reasons for that fire are hotly disputed, but the owners of the famed club were charged with negligence causing death. The trial begins in April next year.

PHUKET CITY OFFIcials have offered to help the families of the victims of the Chokchai furniture shop in Talad Yai, in which four people died in the early hours of August 2. Mayor Somjai Suwansupappana said the city will help pay for the funerals of three of the victims, and a total of B139,000 has already been given to the families. The relatives of the fourth victim, were also given B25,000. The survivor, shop owner Janhom Jakkaew, is currently receiving treatment at Bangkok hospital in Phuket Town and will continue to receive financial support for medical costs. Mayor Somjai said she believes that the people of Phuket will learn from this incident and the city will do more to find people to work in the emergency services. Suthicha Sirirat

A SENIOR PHUKET POLICE officer has ordered his men to arrest anyone caught texting or talking on their mobile phones while driving. This includes any vehicle on the road, from trucks and motorbikes and everything in between. Pol Col Sermpan Sirikong, superintendent of the Phuket Town Police, told The Phuket News on Tuesday (August 5), “I ordered my men today to watch out for those texting or chatting while on the road. “They have started crack-

he stabbing of an Italian journalist by a gang of young Thai robbers on July 3 has ushered in a new system that will help fund medical treatment for visitors who are attacked and injured in Phuket. Investigative journalist Antonia Papaleo spent three weeks in hospital after he was stabbed, and had to have his spleen removed. At a meeting of the Phuket Tourist Association (PTA) on Tuesday (August 5), Santi Pawai, director of the Phuket Office of Tourism and Sport (POTS) explained, “As soon as I heard about the case [of Mr Papaleo], I called the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in Bangkok. “Vachira Hospital were able to approve a B100,000 grant [for his treatment], while Patong Hospital also offered a B1,690 grant. “The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has a total budget of around B20 million for [such cases] throughout Thailand. We plan to set up a committee in Phuket to help tourists in the future, so that each case can be dealt with quickly and

For
example, if tourists are injured in a natural disaster, a terrorist act, an assault, a rape or an accident, they may receive a special grant and immediate help. If the accident involves alcohol or drugs there will be no award. Tourists may receive a grant of B100,000 for medical costs or as much as B300,000
if they lose a limb or an organ. Rape victims will get B20,000. If the tourist is required to stay in hospital and this affects their travel plans, they may receive an additional B2,000 per day for up to 10 days, for food and accommodation. Pol Col ML Pattanajak Jakkapan, superintendent of Kamala Police Station, said, “The reason for this is the Antonio Papaleo case. “He suffered a cut spleen in the attack and was taken to Patong Hospital initially and then to Vachira Hospital where he stayed for around 10 days. “We discovered that all nine offenders who attacked Antonio already had criminal records. We arrested eight and are still looking for the ninth. “Pol Maj Gen Krajang Suwannarat, heading the Phuket Police Force, and other senior police officers, believe that tourists should not be faced with such terrible situations. So we cooperated with the Phuket Tourist Association and the POTS to find the best way to help.” Sathirapong Na Takuatung, the new president of the PTA, thanked Vachira Phuket Hospital for offering support to the officials and for making generous grants to tourists.

Acting on a tip-off, Kathu District Officer Sayan Channachaiwong led a team, some armed, to the site in the hills. When they arrived it looked as though the loggers had fled only minutes before, leaving the lumber behind. When they arrived at Ban Bangwan Kamala hill, the encroachers appeared to have left the scene in a hurry, leaving the timber behind. The raiders found 46 planks concealed in bushes. They now hope to be able to identify those responsible for raping the forest.

Fear lingers on in taxi culture T
he old Phuket system of taxi territories fiercely – and sometimes violently – defended against outsiders may have been destroyed, but in the minds of many of the island’s drivers, apparently, it still exists. So far not one driver has followed the urgings of the Phuket Provincial Land Transport Office (PLTO) to convert to driving a meter taxi, Jaturong Kaewkasi, academic officer of Phuket Provincial Land Transport Office said today (August 1). After talking to many drivers, he said, the PLTO had discovered widespread fear that those who converted to meter taxis would not be able to roam the island at will – which is the PLTO’s aim – due to the old taxi culture of exclusive territories. But, Mr Jaturong said, Phuket has changed in the past couple of months with the crackdown on taxi mafia activities and the arrests of some of

People must change the perspectives, too, he said. “If influential people try to stop them doing their job, drivers can call 1584 and the police will take care of the matter,” he said. Registration for meter taxis is now open, and will run until the end of this month (August 31). Drivers’ cars must not be
more than six years old (a relaxation of the rule that stated they must be no more than two years old). If drivers cannot initially afford to paint their cars yellow and red, they can drive for the first year with yellow and red stripes along the side of their cars. To register, drivers must bring to the PLTO a copy of their house registration book
(samnao tabien baan), a copy of their ID card, a copy of the car registration book, and a copy of their license to drive a public vehicle. Once they have registered, and provided that the car has been fitted with the necessary equipment, they can start work the following day. He added that from tomorrow (August 9) until Tuesday, there will be a fair at the PLTO selling equipment for meter taxis such as the meters themselves, roof lights and free/not free lights. The only place on the island where the taxi mess has yet to be sorted out is the airport, Mr Jaturong said, but this is being worked on. The fares for meter taxis are currently awaiting approval from the National Council for Peace and Order. Once these are set, Mr Jaturong said, he believes they will provide the incentive to convert many drivers to meter taxi operators. Suthicha Sirirat

Public ‘must join in fight against crime and terrorism’ THE PROVINCIAL ADministration Organisation (OrBorJor) held a meeting at the Phuket Garden Hotel on Monday (Aug 4) to discuss ways to increase awareness of the risks of terrorism and transnational crime. OrBorJor president Paiboon Upatising said the aim of the meeting was to boost awareness among both the disciplined forces and the public. “These days Phuket tourism is increasing. We must be ready for all kinds of criminals. Government force alone may not be enough, so everyone must help. “With more tourists [coming to Thailand], we already have more [transnational] crime to deal with, such as credit card fraud and illegal passports, especially in a major tourism centre like Phuket. “If every community creates a network to fight crime, to be vigilant, and to be observant in our surroundings, bringing bad guys to justice will be an easy task and we will create a better place for our children. “If we ignore the fact that crime and terrorism exist, we are encouraging them to grow.”

ake B1,000 notes are spreading through Thailand, it appears, though none have yet been detected in Phuket. Initially the fake bills were spotted in Trang in late July but on Monday (August 4) they also surfaced in Chonburi. Vendors at Chonburi’s Sri Phalothai Market told police that they have been duped into accepting the fakes. One of the victims, Somsak Angkhanavin, a 62-year-old butcher, explained that a group of “five of six” people bought several kilograms of his pork on Sunday (August 3), each paying him with a B1,000 note.
@thephuketnews
Mr Somsak said he thought about refusing the notes – he heard about the fakes in Trang – but then decided to accept them anyway “out of respect”. He said he later learned the notes were fake. The same day, a chicken vendor went to the police with a bag he found under a tree next to the market. Police checked the contents – 70 B1,000 notes, all of them counterfeit, and all bearing the same serial number: 2D7874400. Trang police recently issued a warning that some of the fakes also have the serial number 9A3828862.
In an effort to contain the spread of the forged notes, the Bank of Thailand sent officials to teach market vendors in Trang how to spot a fake bill. “There are three ways to spot them,” said one official, Sawitri Kaewdaeng. “Touch them, hold them up against the light, and slant them.” The Bank of Thailand website explains in detail how to confirm a B1,000 note is genuine. The fakes do not have these features. The words “Thai Government” (in Thai) on the left side of the face of the notes should be slightly raised; When held to the light,

Mayor Chalermluk said that she understood why sometimes the council might feel it could not pass the budget, but added that in this case she was puzzled because her budget would fund many projects that the council members had favoured in the past. Although the Mayor was elected by a big majority in the April 26 elections, the majority of the Council members, also elected on the same day, are on the “team” of Pian Keesin, whom she beat at the polls. In the past, when the council was elected and would then name a mayor, the failure to pass the budget would result in what was effectively a vote of no confidence and elections would have to follow. This happened to Mayor Pian in 2001. Now, however, the mayoral and council elections are separate, so the Mayor retains her seat even though the budget has not been agreed. Darawan Naknakhon

The informant said that this gang, too, were charging 20 per cent a month and were going every day to collect payments. If debtors were unable to pay they were threatened with violence. The police had the informant wait for the enforcers, money in hand, while the officers waited close by. When the informant paid the enforcers with a marked
B500 note against his debt of B10,000, the police surrounded them. One of the men was carrying a bag containing B22,540, including the marked note. The men admitted that they were working in the loan sharking business and went to the same place every day to collect interest from debtors. Police named the enforcers as Wirat Jankampa, 20, Watchara Kongdee, 34, Anek Huaihongthong, 35, and Wichan Pumtakong, 23.

Cops search for gun-loving drug dealer
POLICE ARE STILL TRACKing an alleged drug dealer after he fled from the authorities on August 2. Police raided the home of Tirawut Sengpa after receiving a tip-off that he was selling large amounts of drugs, mostly crystal methamphetamine. Their investigations indicated that although his main dwelling was a house in Wan Place Village, where he lived with his 53-year-old partner, Warathip Thongwijit, he had several cars and other houses dotted around the island, but no formal job.
The informant also told police that Tirawut gets his drugs from Bangkok and uses a Toyota Camry with fake license plates to make local deliveries. When police arrived at the house on July 31, Tirawut fled the scene. Police then entered the house and found Warathip in the bedroom, along with four guns, holsters, and ammunition. Warathip was taken to the Phuket Provincial Police Station for questioning over the unlicensed weapons. She was later released.
Police arrest young man with pen gun PRAKASIT SINPRASOP, 22, riding on the back of a motorbike, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon (August 5) after officers discovered he was carrying a pen gun. Police searched Prakasit and the driver of the bike after they noticed them “behaving suspiciously” at a police checkpoint at the Sakoo-Cherng Talay. They found and seized the pen gun, a .38-calibre bullet and a pocket knife.
Prakasit admitted that all the items belonged to him, saying that he carried them for his own protection. Unimpressed with his explanation, police charged him with illegal possession of firearm and carrying a gun in a public area without a permit. Pen guns are small weapons carrying a single bullet and, as the name suggests, disguised to look like a pen. They can be deadly. In Thailand, many are homemade.
POL MAJ GEN KRAJANG Suwannarat, currently commanding the Phuket police force, on Wednesday (August 6) confirmed that the commanders of police officers found guilty of involvement in extortion rackets will also face punishment in the form of administrative penalties. “We will apply the law to officers involved in extortion, with disciplinary penalties and criminal penalties. It’s what we have to do because it’s wrong,” he said. “The bosses of these officials will have to face administrative punishment too if they are deemed to have failed to supervise their men properly. They will not be demoted, but they may be transferred or fined.” His comments came after the Bangkok Post on Monday quoted Pol Lt Gen Ruangsak Jarit-eak as telling superintendents to stop their officers extorting money from motorbike taxis in Bangkok, on pain of facing administrative punishment. In Phuket, the Public Sector Anti-corruption Commission (PACC) expects to see three police officers from Chalong Police Station in court soon on charges of extorting money from the dive industry. Pol Col Krittapat Dechintharasorn, superintendent of Chalong police station and boss of the three men, told The Phuket News recently, “I don’t have a specific policy to deal with the problem [of corrupt officers extorting money from the dive industry] because all police officers know the National Police Service Act well and [know the consequences of contravening it].” He added that the cases did not indicate anything was wrong with the police system as a whole. “This involved individuals. It can happen in any organisation. It doesn’t mean that the whole organisations is wrong. The individual who does the wrong thing is the one who is required to take responsibility.” thephuketnews

10 years on, tsunami duo say ‘Thank you’ Alasdair Forbes

T
sunami survivors Ben and Emily Willgrass on July 31 finally got to meet the people they have wanted to thank for almost 10 years. The brother and sister – who were children when Yupin Sengmuang and her then-husband Pichet, sheltered them after the December 26, 2004, disaster, and later drove them and their father to Bangkok to catch a plane out – felt they had never said thank-you properly. On Monday (August 4), after the reunion, Mrs Yupin said the duo had visited her several times in the preceding few days, with laughter, tears and hugs amid the reminiscences of those dark hours while their father searched for their mother Louise who, sadly, was found dead in Patong, a victim of the wave. In between the hugs, Mrs Yupin said, she fed them, too, with pad Thai and tom yam kung. The reunion was sparked
when Ben and Emily asked on Facebook for help in finding Yupin and Pichet. Within 15 hours, thanks to social media and with help from the The Phuket News and other Thai media, they had been put in touch. Ben Willgrass said after the Phuket reunion meetings, “We would like to say a huge thank you to all the Thai people for helping us find Yupin and Pichet by sharing our Facebook post and getting in contact. “Our trip to Phuket was difficult at times and often brought back sad memories of our experiences during the tsunami and the loss of our lovely mother. “However, we feel overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of the Thai people and now also have many happy memories of our time in Thailand. “We are both so happy to have met Yupin and Pichet again and feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to thank them for their help and support and the kind-
without favouring anyone. The beaches, namely Patong, Kamala, Surin, Nai Harn, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Sai Keaw, Kata, and Karon, have been all been cleared of businesses that were operating illegally. Capt Petcharat said that police continue to receive complaints from people that other small beaches have not been affected, particularly Paradise and Freedom beaches. “Every beach we deal with, we try to manage it according to the law. Each beach has its own law,” he said, explaining the reasons why each one has a different timeline for ridding them of illegal businesses. “If [a beach] is in a National Park, we use the National
ness they showed us after the tsunami. “Our reunions were very special and the memories we now have of our time together will stay with us forever. We had a lovely time meeting Pichet and really appreciated him travelling to Phuket to see us; it was so nice to catch up with him after so long and to chat about our experiences and our lives.
Park Law. The beaches that are under Or Bor Tor control come under the Building and Construction Act. So the period for demolition is different [depending on the law]. “And then there are the cases that have gone to court, which must wait until the court delivers a judgement. “Each beach has a different law [that applies]. So some places may already have been taken down but others remain. But this doesn’t mean there will be no demolition. I want to stress that all public land encroachment must be stopped. “We will be fair with everybody and will do the same on every beach,” he said.

Displaced beach vendors ‘should contact NCPO’ INDIVIDUALS DISPLACED by the recent beach clearings all over Phuket are being asked to contact the local representatives of the National Peace and Order Keeping Council (NCPO), the Council announced on Friday (August 1). Army Capt Petcharat Tianjan, head of Civil Affairs Division at the Third Naval Area Command, said that the military has a plan to help vendors who have been affected most by the beach cleaning. Complaints and information will be collected at all municipal buildings around the island until Sunday (August 10). “Yupin is an amazing lady and made us feel so welcome in her shop; we visited her every day and she showed us lots of love and cooked us delicious food. We shared tears, laughter and many hugs with her, and loved being in her company. “We would like to thank Yupin and Pichet for making our trip so special, and to tell them that we look forward to coming back to Thailand to
visit them again. We would also like to say a very big thank you to all the Thai people we met during our time in Phuket; we have been made to feel so welcome and were shown so much kindness and compassion during our stay. We have had an amazing time and now know that Phuket will always hold a special place in our hearts. Thawatchai Arunyik, Governor of the Tourism Author-

The risky business of leisure travel
T
he Ministry of Tourism and Sport’s budding plan – currently at the pre-formation of a committee phase – to set up a scheme to compensate tourists for calamities that they may endure on their travels here – is a sound one. And it will certainly go a small way to enhancing Thailand’s attractiveness as a wildly popular tourist destination, whence perhaps too many “horror stories” are reported by the West’s more salacious media outlets. There is risk everywhere, both at home and abroad, but Thailand seems to generate a disproportionate number of lurid headlines. This is not to say that mishaps do not occur. And the already in-place guideline that victims will not be eligible for compensation if drugs or alcohol are involved, is an eminently sensible one. However, the programme

needs to be fastidiously planned out, as many an injured tourist has blamed a “spiked drink” or some such other dubious rationale in order to avoid taking responsibility for his or her own actions and misadventures. It’s something of a doubleedged sword. On one hand, Thailand is a magnet for the more hedonistic – and therefore non-risk averse – visitor (as well as more cautious types and families), and all tourist contribute to one of the biggest tourism economies on the planet. On the other hand, the kinds of behaviour and sporting activities that demand generates supply for here, do deliver spills as well as thrills. A belt-and-braces approach is called for as well. In addition to setting up a compensation scheme, regulations need to be tightened – and common sense to become more common, through government-funded workshops for tour operators
and other means – in order to reduce the number of accidents, alcohol-fueled or otherwise, that give rise to leaps of judgement about Thailand outside the Kingdom. The other possibility is to reactivate the plan to introduce compulsory visitor insurance and enforce it. Best of all would be to build all three measures into the fabric of our worldfamous tourism industry. Thailand attracts all sorts. Some come a cropper through capricious fate, plain rotten bad luck and acts of God. Others could minimize their own risk of injury or becoming a crime victim. By taking all three moves – compensation, insurance and enhancing public awareness through education – all visitors will be assured of a safer and more protected time here. And if all this means less tut-tutting from tabloid readers in the West, then so be be it.

If Taxis refuse to use Taximeters, revoke their license in Patong and adopt the Pattaya Tuk Tuk system (Drive around Pattaya in designated circuits, charging flat rates starting at 20 Baht for short-distance rides. So in order to use Bahtbuses effectively, it makes sense for tourists to learn these regular Baht-bus routes. Yingluck will contest charges, says lawyer F
ormer prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra will return to Thailand to fight charges of dereliction of duty in the rice-pledging scheme, her lawyer repeated Tuesday (August 5) as the likelihood of charges moved a step closer. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) forwarded the case to the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG), recommending Ms Yingluck be indicted in the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions. On July 17, the NACC recommended Ms Yingluck be indicted for dereliction of duty in failing to deal with corruption and losses in the ricepledging scheme. The NACC estimates the rice scheme lost at least B500 billion. The NACC ruled by a vote of 7-0 that there were sufficient grounds to allegations that Ms Yingluck was negligent in failing to scrap the scheme, despite knowing it was plagued by corruption

The passengers complained they had lost 10 mobile phones and cash worth B2,500 between them while they were sleeping in the early hours Tuesday (August 5). thief may have fled at a stop at any station in Surat Thani and Thung Song district of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The second class air-conditioned sleeping carriage where the alleged robbery took place is only a carriage away from the recently launched “ladies and children only carriage,” a service introduced just last week to help ensure safety aboard trains for women and children. Pathom Pinagun, a military volunteer and one of the passengers whose mobile phone was taken, said he felt as though he had been drugged as he slept for most of the train journey before waking up at 6am. He had never experienced such a deep sleep on previ-
ous trips on that route. He said some fellow passengers complained they were suffering from dizziness when they woke up. However, Railway Police Division commander Pol Maj Gen Thanung Buranon said it is too early to conclude that 30 passengers in the sleeper cabin had in fact been drugged. Pol Capt Phanomnoi said passengers will be drug tested. Pol Maj Gen Thanung said no one has been arrested so far. Thanongsak Phongprasert, State Railway of Thailand’s director of train services, said the SRT has asked the railway police to examine the names of staff on duty on the train and of passengers in the sleeping carriage. NACC for “unfair practices” in the investigation against her. Ms Yingluck previously requested additional defence witnesses, but was refused by the NACC. Mr Norawit said the NACC rushed its investigation into the case and its findings were still incomplete, adding the petition, which will be submitted to the OAG, will include fresh information. The lawyer said he believed the attorney-general will accept the petition and give Ms Yingluck fairness and justice. Regarding Ms Yingluck’s return to Thailand from her overseas trip, Mr Norawit said Ms Yingluck has not informed him of any change in her planned return to Thailand. Ms Yingluck was allowed to leave for a holiday in Europe and the United States on July 23. However, questions have been raised as to whether Ms Yingluck will ever return to Thailand to face the charges against her. Bangkok Post

Murderer doctor to Farmers hit back treat drug addicts at Suthep’s family Killer doctor Wisut Boonkasemsanti should be required to treat drug addicts while on parole for the next three years, Kannikar Saengthong, director-general of the Department of Probation, said Tuesday (August 5). Wisut was released on parole Monday (August 4) after serving 10 years and seven months for murdering of his wife, and disposing of her chopped-up remains in toilets at a Chulalongkorn University dormitory and the Sofitel Central Hotel in Lat Phrao in 2001. Mrs Kannikar said it benefits parolees like Wisut to contribute to society as many released from jail feel they have no value to society. However, she noted, the Medical Council of Thailand will make the ultimate decision on whether the former gynaecologist can treat patients as a practitioner. Wisut was sentenced to death in 2003. However, his sentence was commuted and then reduced after he provided treatment to sick inmates while incarcerated.

Ex-general Prabowo Subianto angrily compared Indonesia to a “totalitarian country like North Korea” at the start of a legal challenge Wednesday (August 6) to the results of the country’s presidential election, as hundreds of flagwaving supporters staged a rally. In a fiery speech at the Constitutional Court, Prabowo also lashed out at the “dishonesty and injustice” of the poll in the world’s thirdbiggest democracy, which he lost to Jakarta governor Joko Widodo. Widodo, a former furniture exporter known by his nickname Jokowi, won legions of fans with his downto-earth style as Jakarta governor and is the country’s first leader from outside the political and military elites. Prabowo, a controversial former military figure with roots in the era of dictator Suharto, also declared victory at the July 9 presidential election, but official results two weeks later confirmed Widodo won a decisive victory. The ex-general – who has been seeking the presidency for a decade – has still refused to accept the results however, claiming there were widespread fraud and irregularities during the vote count. His team has filed a lengthy complaint against the election commission with the Constitutional Court in the capital Jakarta, which rules on poll disputes.
A former Iranian student leader and reformist turned journalist has been jailed for six years for “undermining national security” and “spreading propaganda”, less than 12 months after returning home from a stint abroad. The sentence given to Serajeddine Mirdamadi is the latest in a series of such convictions of academics, activists and reporters. Iranian media did not disclose any details of specific acts that led to the charges and conviction. Mirdamadi was active in student politics and worked in the interior ministry during the first term (1997-2001) of reformist President Mohammad Khatami. While living abroad, Mirdamadi wrote political commentaries for an Amsterdam-based radio and gave interviews to the BBC’s Persian service.

Malaysian opposition facing deep schism A
power-broking rift within Malaysia’s opposition alliance is spurring fears that the unlikely multi-racial coalition, which inspired millions to imagine an alternative to the country’s decades-old regime, faces potential collapse. Unprecedented electoral gains have enabled the diverse three-party Pakatan Rakyat (People’s Pact) to paper over wide religious and social differences in its six-year history. But an impasse over a key political appointment has reignited nagging doubts over its cohesiveness. “I think Pakatan’s basic viability is being severely tested,” said Tony Pua, a leading parliamentarian with the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a Pakatan component. Failure to heal the rift would mean “the whole question of us staying together becomes moot.” The fight centres on de facto Pakatan leader Anwar Ibrahim’s bid to have his widely respected wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, appointed chief minister of Selangor, Muslimmajority Malaysia’s richest and most populous state. In 2008 polls, the opposition for the first time won Selangor, the jewel in a run of recent electoral spoils nationwide that have rocked the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). But top figures in the PanMalaysia Islamic Party (PAS) – a conservative Muslim party frequently at odds with its more secular Pakatan partners

Photo: Yukke123 – support retaining Selangor incumbent Khalid Ibrahim. A former businessman and member of Anwar’s People’s Justice Party, Khalid is respected by many for his running of Selangor, which Pakatan retained in elections last year. He refuses to budge. PAS is accused of violating an agreement against meddling in each party’s appointments. Anwar’s party – which controls Selangor – this week threatened to expose alleged corruption by Khalid unless he steps down. Malaysia’s UMNO-controlled mainstream media has gleefully pounced on the unseemly spat, forcing Anwar and other top Pakatan leaders to stand shoulder-to-shoulder last weekend to vow the alliance would not collapse. In a statement Tuesday (August 5), Anwar added Pakatan must “resist all attempts to break it apart” while warning that failure to close ranks
“may warrant some difficult decisions to be made.” He did not elaborate. And his office has declined further comment. PAS’s top leadership is expected to decide a potentially make-or-break final stance on the matter Sunday. Political analysts expect Pakatan to make peace to avoid throwing away its recent gains, but add that the affair fuels questions among voters and markets over whether Pakatan is stable enough to govern nationally. The bloc won a majority of the popular vote last year, but failed to make history by winning national government. It blamed an UMNO-tilted electoral system. With the next elections not due until 2018, Pakatan faces a challenge sustaining momentum amid its members’ differences, said political pollster Ibrahim Suffian.
“Assuming Pakatan Rakyat survives this, the question is what will it be able to do over the next three to four years? Even if Selangor is patched up, there could be problems elsewhere,” he said. UMNO-dominated coalitions have governed multiethnic Malaysia since independence in 1957, bringing remarkable economic development in the years since, but not without human rights concerns. And the government is accused of rampant corruption, persecuting opponents, and a divide-and-rule strategy that has perpetuated racial divisions. Since 2008, the opposition has rallied around Anwar – a charismatic former rising UMNO star who was ousted in a bruising late-1990s power struggle – winning huge support with promises of clean government, racial harmony and a freer society. Authorities raid Taiwan gas-blast firms TAIWAN AUTHORITIES raided the offices of two firms linked to massive gas explosions that killed 30 people as the island flew flags at halfmast Tuesday to mourn the blast victims and 48 killed in an earlier plane crash. The death toll rose to 30 after the family of the two listed as missing agreed to the termination of a gruelling and fruitless search by dozens of workers at the blast site in Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second largest city. Prosecutors overnight searched the offices of LCY Chemical Corp, a company allegedly responsible for the deadly explosions last Thursday that also injured more than 300. They also raided China General Terminal Distribution

that recorded the shipment of propene which prosecutor Huang Yuan-kuan said “should be useful in helping clarify the case”. The Kaohsiung city government says evidence shows that around 10 tonnes of propene might have leaked in the
hours before the first explosion and blames LCY Chemical for the deadly blasts which tore up city streets. President Ma Ying-jeou has vowed a full investigation into the cause of the incident and a review of the pipe network. Kaohsiung lies adjacent to a huge petrochemical complex housing dozens of plants and many pipelines run under the densely packed city. Meanwhile, Sierra Leone’s president said that the regional epidemic threatened the “very essence” of the nation. The World Bank said Monday that it would provide up to US$200 million to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to help the West African nations contain the deadly outbreak. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, himself an expert on infectious diseases, said he has been monitoring the spread of the virus and was “deeply saddened” at how it was contributing to the breakdown of

The funding will help provide medical supplies and pay healthcare staff to contain the epidemic and try to prevent future outbreaks, the World Bank said. The bank made the announcement as African leaders, including 35 presidents, are visiting Washington for a US-Africa summit. The death toll from the
Ebola outbreak on Monday reached 887, according to the World Health Organization. The latest doctor to be infected had attended to Patrick Sawyer, who worked for Liberia’s finance ministry and contracted the virus from his sister before travelling to Lagos for a meeting of West African officials. Nigeria’s Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu told journalists that 70 other people
believed to have come into contact with Sawyer, who has also died, were being monitored. Of the eight now in quarantine, three show “symptomatic” signs of the disease, he said. The Liberian government has warned against touching the dead or anyone ill with Ebola-like symptoms, which include fever, severe headaches, vomiting, and muscular pain and, in the final stages, profuse bleeding. DOING YOUR HOMEWORK
The Thai labour law is firmly on the side of the employee Jerrold Kippen Tax & Law Expert Duensing Kippen
T
he major legislation governing labor protection law in Thailand is the Labor Protection Act (the “LPA”). The LPA prescribes labor protection standards applicable to both employers and employees working in Thailand. However, the LPA does not apply to Government and State Enterprise employees. The LPA prescribes the minimum rights to which employees’ working in Thailand are entitled in such areas as working hours, overtime hours, working days and leave; wages, overtime pay, holiday pay; sick leave; employee welfare; and termination of employment. In addition, provisions relating to protection of females and children are also contained in the LPA – for example, employers are required to treat male and female employees equally; employers and their agents must not commit sexual harassment against employees who are female or children; and pregnant female employees are entitled to maternity leave for a period of time with salary payment. Note: any employer who violates or fails to comply with the LPA may be punished, depending on the seriousness of his or her offence, with a fine of B5,000 to B200,000,
or imprisonment of up to one year, or both. In articles over the coming weeks we will highlight sections of the LPA of which every employer in Thailand should be aware, and then survey additional provisions of the law relevant to both employers and employees in Thailand. To start with, let’s take a look at work hours and break time. WORK HOURS AND BREAK TIME Under the LPA an employee may not work more than eight hours a day unless otherwise agreed between the employer and the employee – but in any event the total work hours must not exceed forty-eight hours in a week. These requirements are reduced to seven hours a day or forty-two hours a week for work that “may be harmful to the safety or health of an employee”. Where the working hours of any working day are less than eight hours, an employer and employee may agree to add the balance of the eight working hours to any other normal working day – but the total number of working hours must not exceed nine hours a day or forty-eight hours a week. Furthermore, employers must give a give at least one hour of break time to any employee who works for five
wages are calculated on a daily or hourly basis. These employees must be paid “holiday wages” if they work on a holiday at a rate of not less than two times their normal non-holiday wage. When any employee works more than eight hours in a day, he or she must be paid for overtime at a rate of not less than 1.5 times their normal hourly wage rate average. On public holidays employees who work more than eight hours must be paid overtime at a rate of not less than three times their normal hourly wage rate.
If food and drink are not available “reasonably close” to the work place, employees are entitled to a two-hour lunch break. Photo: Dennis Wong hours or more continuously. This total of one hour may be broken into shorter periodic breaks but the total break time must not be less than one hour. In the event that there food and beverage facilities are not available to the employees within reasonably close to work, or if there are such facilities but they do not provide service continuously on each of the employee’s working days, the employee is entitled to a total of two hours of break time on each such day. Employers must also allow
a break of not less than twenty minutes to all employees who are required to perform two or more hours of overtime work. PAY AND OVERTIME Now let’s look at pay, particularly as it applies to overtime and working on public holidays. The LPA states that wages must be paid only in money – not in kind – and must not be at less than the minimum wage rate. Employees can be divided into two types as follows: Salaried Employees, who receive wages on holidays
(weekends or weekly holiday, official public holidays and annual leave) when they do not actually work on such holidays – for example, employees who receive a monthly salary. These employees must be and are already (by being on salary) paid “holiday wages” at a rate of not less than than their average hourly wage rate on a normal work day. Non-salaried employees, who are not entitled to receive wages on holidays if they do not work on such a holiday, for example employees whose

Laguna Phuket hosts first domestic MICE mart LAST FRIDAY (AUGUST 1) Laguna Phuket hosted Thailand’s first Domestic MICE Mart (DMM), a touring show organised by Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), whose job is to promote MICE businesses and events in Thailand. The campaign aims to promote and enhance the MICE industry development in Thailand by rolling out monthly tradeshows in Thailand’s targeted five MICE cities; Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Pattaya, and Phuket, over a period of five consecutive months which started in late March this year in Bangkok. A leading MICE venue in each city was selected to host a full-day trade show where sellers and buyers in Thailand’s domestic MICE industry will meet. Laguna Phuket was the chosen host venue for the tradeshow in
S Thailand economy static as North grows THE BANK OF THAILAND (BoT) has reported that in the second quarter the economy in the North of Thailand improved, but that of the South made no gains. Somsak Wongpanyathaworn, BOT Northern Region Office director, said the economy there was better than in the first quarter of this year because the political situation had been relieved and government policies were clear. But Pruitipong Srimachan, director of the BoT Southern Region Office, said the southern economy remained unchanged in the second quarter compared with the first. Tourism and prices of local farm produce dropped, while rubber prices remained low. This affected the incomes of local farmers and declining exports in the South caused most operators to be more cautious in their spending. Unemployment increased while inflation grew. He said the number of tourists visiting the South decreased 5.3 per cent from the previous quarter, in part because of the insurgency-related explosion in Hat Yai district of Songkhla province. The local hotel occupancy rate currently stands at 54.1 per cent. However, Mr Pruitipong said that tourism in the southern provinces facing the Andaman Sea expanded due to the growing number of tourists from China, Russia and Australia. MCOT Online @thephuketnews
Delegates mingle at the Domestic MICE Mart staged at Laguna Phuket last Friday. Phuket, the last city in the campaign’s first “edition”. As the TCEB points out on its website, “As one of the country’s economic hubs, Phuket has everything necessary for outstanding business events including over 600 hotels in all budget ranges; an efficient international airport that welcomes direct flights from all over the globe; and an
array of venues, activities, and attractions to ensure fun and fulfilling expos, conventions, and team-building functions.” Phuket has become one of Thailand’s most celebrated MICE cities, and Laguna Phuket was selected as the host venue because of its MICE capacity, demonstrated over the past years by hosting large events such as the Amway
China conference in 2012 and, in 2013, the large-scale NuSkin meeting. “We are very proud to be the selected host venue for this exciting MICE mart,” said Prapa Hemmin, Laguna Phuket’s Director of SalesMICE & Corporate Events. “MICE business in Thailand has seen a steady pick up; thanks to the TCEB for its
strong partnership and global connections that keeps Thailand abreast of the industry’s interest and selection.” Laguna’s hotels offer a variety of MICE facilities, while the central Latitude venue is capable of hosting a wide variety of meetings and incentive programmes, conferences, gala dinners and other events in a spectacular waterside setting. Latitude, a 1,000-squaremetre marquee, is an airconditioned facility capable of accommodating up to 1,000 guests theatre style, 800 for cocktails, or 600 for a banquet. MAS shooting ‘may affect Thai tourism’ A
leading tourism industry figure has warned that the suspected downing of a Malaysian Airline plane in Ukraine could discourage Westerners from travelling to Thailand, further damaging the Kingdom’s already struggling tourism industry. The incident may have a “psychological effect” on European tourists, causing them to delay plans or cancel to travel to Southeast Asian nations, especially because many of those who perished on flight MH17 were Dutch and Scandinavian, said Ponthip Hiranket, deputy president of the Tourism Council of Thailand (ICT). “The reason it will affect other countries apart from
Malaysia is because when tourists plan a long-distance trip, they tend to cover several destinations in one trip,” Ms Phontip explained, “and they tend to use Kuala Lumpur as a main link to other countries.” She continued, “Of course, not only Thailand will be affected, as tourists may reconsider their trips to the entire Southeast Asian region.” Ms Ponthip’s warning came amid growing evidence that flight MH17, which traveled between the Netherlands and Malaysia, was downed by pro-Russia separatist rebels in Ukraine, possibly with anti-air missiles supplied by Russia. The rebels and Russia have steadfastly denied the allegation.
Bangchak ‘ready to turn rotten rice into ethanol’ BANGCHAK PETROLEUM is willing to buy rotten rice from the Pheu Thai government’s disastrous rice pledging scheme programme and turn it into ethanol, but only if the government ends the sale of 95-octane petrol in order to increase the demand for ethanol. Vichien Usanachote, president of Bangchak, said that the price it will pay depends on its flour content.
But he noted that the rice purchase would hit cassava growers because ethanol production would depend less on their produce. To protect the cassava growers’ interests, the NCPO and Order should stop sales of 95-octane petrol to increase ethanol demands, he suggested. He said the stoppage would not affect motorists because all vehicles can be fueled with gasohol. MCOT Online
More than 270 people died in the crash. The ICT’s deputy president added that even before the MH17 tragedy took place, Thailand was already seeing fewer tourists from European nations. According to Ms Ponthip, the number of European tourist arrivals in July is down by 10 per cent compared with the same period last year. She blamed the slump on the country’s ongoing political turmoil, including the sixmonth protest campaign against the previous government that started in November and the military takeover on May 22. “The European market still has a negative perception of these issues,” Ms. Ponthip said.
Nevertheless, she predicted that the Thai tourism industry will recover by the time the high season kicks in in October. Ms Ponthip also said she believes the psychological effect caused by the MH17 crash will be short-term. Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, chairman of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), was less pessimistic. He agreed that the shooting down of MH17 will affect the Thai tourism industry indirectly, but is confident that there will be only a “small psychological effect.” “I don’t think it will affect the overall situation of tourism in the Asean region, even Thailand,” said Mr Sisdivachr. Meow Island: The 100 residents of Tashirojima – a small island in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of northeastern Japan – are outnumbered by the amount of semi-feral cats that roam the land. The felines, most of them homeless, have inhabited the island for centuries and were originally brought to control the huge mice infestation that had damaged the island’s once-thriving silkworm industry. The Tashirojima fisherman have greatly admire the cats for their ability to predict storms, which proved useful during the massive earthquake of 2011 – thousands of residents headed to higher ground before the ensuing tsunami. Bangkok Fishbowl: The story of the Bangkok fishbowl dates back all the way to 1999. The New World Shopping Mall, just blocks away from the backpackers haven of Khao San Road, was abandoned after a fire left the building beyond repair and damaged the rooftop. Years of flooding and collected rainwater caused a mosquito infestation which, in turn, caused a problem for locals. Their solution? Throw catfish, koi, and other colourful fish in the water. Today, the mall’s pond is littered with hundreds of fish. Snail’s Pace:The Giant African Land Snail can grow up to 25.4 cm long and are known to eat everything – even stucco and wood. A small neighborhood in southwest Miami is being called “ground zero” as these snails infest the entire area, leaving a trail of slimy excrement wherever they go. Some locals say that small religious sects in the city have introduced the animals because of its reported healing powers. Still, residents have started collecting the giant snails, putting them in plastic bags, and freezing them in an effort to curb the infestation.
Bunny Island: The Japanese island of Okunoshima was home to a poson gas factory and provided the country with much of the chermicals that was used against the Chinese during World War II. After the gas factories were closed following the war, rabbits were let loose on the island – some of which were used for testing the effectiveness of chemical weapons. Since then, those bunnies have been destroyed, the island was made into a park and the “clean” bunnies have reproduced like, well, bunnies. Scarlet Splash: The red crab, a land crab that is native to Christmas Island off the coast of Indonesia, is a large creature with claws that are 116 mm wide. Over 43.7 million red crabs overrun the island, comared to the local human population of just 1,500. In November, the carbs migrate from the inland rainforest to the sea whilt their offspring do the exact same thing, only in reverse. This causes several problems for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Monkey men hired to scare off real primates I ndia has hired a group of monkey impersonators to scare the real marauding animals away from parliament and other key buildings in the nation’s capital, officials said last week. The “very talented” group of men has taken to wearing monkey masks, imitating their whoops and barks and hiding behind trees to ward off the aggressive animals, the head of the Delhi municipality told AFP. Groups of monkeys, which are revered in the majority Hindu nation, roam freely around Delhi’s streets where they trash gardens, offices and even attack people in their search for food. Concerns about the monkey population were raised in parliament where India’s
government was asked what it was doing to combat the problem. An Indian minister said 40 trained men had in fact been hired to protect the raucous house, itself accused of monkey-like behaviour, from the animal intruders. “Various efforts are being made to tackle the monkey and dog menace inside and
around the parliament house,” Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said in a written reply to a lawmaker’s question. “The measures include scaring the monkeys away by trained persons who disguise themselves as langurs (long tailed monkeys).” The NDMC, the body
tasked with providing civic services, said the men were “very talented” and had been trained to “closely copy” the noises and actions of the more aggressive langurs to scare away the smaller rhesus macaques. “They often wear a mask on their faces, hide behind the trees and make these noises to scare away the simians,” NDMC chairman Jalaj Srivastava said. Monkey catchers and their trained langurs used to be hired by wealthy home owners, politicians and business people to patrol the streets to keep wild monkeys at bay. But t he gove r n me nt cracked down on the business last year after a court ruled that keeping monkeys in captivity was cruel. AFP

French hospital plans wine bar to cheer patients’ final days THE FRENCH HAVE LONG been famed for their unshakeable belief in the health benefits of a glass of wine. Now, one French hospital plans to take things a step further by opening a wine bar aimed at improving the quality of life of terminally-ill patients. The bar at Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital in central France will open in September. It will be housed in the hospital’s palliative care centre and patients will be able to invite friends and family to share a drink with them. The first of its kind in France, the bar would “cheer up the difficult day-to-day existence of patients,” head of the centre Virginie Guastella said. “The aim is to ‘re-humanise’ patients by improving the quality of their day-to-day existence and also by giving them the pleasure of being able to offer and receive,” she said. The bar would also allow families facing bereavement to “create moments of conviviality” despite being in a hospital environment, she added. Staff at the hospital will receive special training from a social anthropologist on how to handle patients who come to the bar. In addition to wine, the bar will also stock beer, whisky and champagne. AFP

Friendly bank hands out free cash as “thanks” to clients CANADA IS KNOWN AS one of the friendliest places in the world. So it’s no surprise that a Canadian bank, TD Canada, gave customers money in more than 1,000 banks as a thank you for their loyalty. Astonished customers were given US$20 bills at “Automatic Thanking Machines” all over Canada, but four branches (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary) did something extra special. Customers in those cities were pre-selected by the bank,
according to Chris Stamper, Senior Vice-PResident of TD Canada, and told to come in to test a new ATM machine. “They had no idea what was in store,” Stamper said. A video on YouTube (with the hashtag #TDThanksYou) shows customers walking up to the ATM only to hear the machine address them by name. People like Christine Todd, a customer from Vancouver, was given ticket to Disneyland and two US$1,000 cheques because she couldn’t take her two sons on vacation.
Separately, an elderly woman was given a ticket to Trinidad and Tobago to vidit her daughter who has cancer. Meanwhile, Mike Jobin – a baseball fan in Toronto – was given a new Blue Jays shirt and had a chance to meet the team. “Our local branch employees know their customers really well and often have close relationships with them. Some have been through tough times and some are just wonderfully kind and caring people,” Stamper said. thephuketnews

New Delhi’s Pahar Ganj, the ‘backpacker area’.

H
aving spent the last month in Nepal, it was time to head on down to India. Kathmandu had been, for lack of better words, a life affirming experience. Opening the door to the taxi, departing the Suwal Mansion was a difficult decision. I felt so grounded, I truly did not want to leave. The airport was predictably chaotic. And the line for immigration was both snakelike in length and snail-like in pace. An hour later, I finally made it through immigration and security. I had to run to catch the bus which had thankfully waited for me on the tarmac. I boarded the plane and did the usual routine of showing my boarding pass to the stewardess. I gave her an inquisitive stare when she pointed me to the first, big, cushy chair on the plane. A second look at my boarding pass confirmed I was in fact seat 1A. Many fellow travelers will be aware of the fabled “upgrade”, much discussed, but rarely experienced. Not only had I been upgraded to business class, but I also had the window seat facing the Hima-
layas on one of the most stunningly gorgeous flights in the world. What had I done right to deserve this? I was acutely aware that India was going to be more chaotic, more dirty, and more frustrating than Kathmandu. I had formulated a rough plan for destinations, but hardly had a set itenerary. I had booked a hotel in New Delhi, without doing much research, aside from a glance at tripadvisor. I would soon learn that this was to be a rather terrible decision. Pahar Ganj, by the quick skimming I had done on the internet, was referred to as the “backpacker area” of New Delhi. I was soon to learn that the term “backpacker area” held two completely different meanings between Southeast Asia and India. The street was a psychedelic maelstrom of rickshaws, neon, and burntout hippies sipping tea in darkened alleyways. My hotel was central to this madness. I stepped out of the taxi, as he helped me with my bag from the trunk. I reached for my wallet… “No! don’t show any money here! We must go inside the hotel first.” The words “Welcome to India” were all too apparent in my mind. My time in Delhi was interspersed with frustration, boredom, and thankfully one night of enjoyment. I had reconnected with an old classmate from Le Cordon Bleu Bangkok who was a Delhi native. Arjun and I were not particularly close when studying in Bangkok, but our mutual love for food, along with his hospitality, and willingness to show me another side of Delhi made for a great night. After a walk through a park, we headed for a few drinks, and discussed the gastronomic options of the evening. I had read about a famous restaurant, Karim’s, which was located near the oldest mosque in India. We parked in a makeshift parking lot, “fly by night parking”, as Arjun referred to it. The restaraunt was a few blocks down the road, and we were soon immersed into a street scene which seemed right out of Pakistan. Aside the largest mosque in India was an Imam bellowing political rhetoric relating to the upcoming elections. If nothing else, I knew this was going to be an extremely authentic meal. Karim’s was celebrating its hundredth year in business, and as we walked in the dimly lit hallway, the first thing we saw was Karim’s great grandson overseeing the preparation of an array of various curries in large silver cauldrons. Karim’s serves strictly Halal food, and the clientele, hundreds of people on any given night, are predominately strict Muslims. The cover of the menu was a picture from Time magazine, which named Karim’s as one of the best restaraunts in Asia. The menu itself only consisted of three simple pages, which in my opinion is always a good sign, as any restaraunt that tries to create too many dishes, often fails in upholding quality. One item that immediately stuck out from the menu was Goat Brain Curry. I jokingly suggested it to Arjun, who said he was a big fan. We ordered a huge array of meats, breads,
Kathmandu from above. So many people think the city is way up in the mountains, but it’s not. Here’s a good shot to show perspective. kababs and of course goat brains. Up until this point I had been quite careful about what I had been eating in India, but considering this restaraunt had been in business over 100 years, I was pretty confident that I would be safe. The curry itself did not differ in appearnce from any other. The oily orange-brown sauce covered up the real treats within. With the confidence instilled in me by the beer earlier that evening, I scooped a spoonful onto my chapati (Indian flat bread) and lifted the previously semi-conscious matter into my mouth. I had no idea what to expect, aside from the vaguely disconcerting description of “creaminess” which I had previously read about. I say this without any boastfulness that accompanies eating exotic foods – goat brain is delicious! I put aside any mental associations, and just savored the texture and flavor. I’ve since been trying to find a worthy comparison to relate the texture to. The best I can come up with is “a mixture between Foie Gras and Ricotta Cheese”. Though I know this will not contribute to many readers seeking out brain curry in the future, all I can confidently say is, if you are in Delhi, please do not pass up the opportunity to visit Karim’s, and if you are even the least bit adventurous, go for the brain curry. Live a little. Jesse is a photographer, traveller and chef and can be contacted through tasteoftheroad.com thephuketnews

I
don’t get along with water, especially if it tastes like salt. While the beach is one of my favourite things about Phuket, anything beyond a leisurely swim in the ocean gets my heart pumping. So to conquer this fear of the deep sea, the people of Sea Bees Diving gave me a chance to poke my head (and torso, and legs) down the water through an introductory dive on a clear Saturday afternoon off the coast of Racha Yai. When I got to the company’s boat, I was paired up with another Introductory Diver – Chan from Macau. Our instructor for the day was Born, a Thai woman who has over 12 years experience. We went through everything that a first-time diver would need to know, including hand signals, what to do with your equipment, and other basics. Even as we approached our destination, and Born helped me and Chan put on our wetsuits, the nerves began to ring throughout. I don’t do much of anything in the water, save for floating, and diving with a heavy tank on my back wasn’t my idea of fun. Once in the water, I met with Chan and we were put at ease by Born’s “mai pen rai” attitude. Slowly, we made our way down 10 metres (stop giggling, reader) and saw some of the most colourful fish just waiting to swim away from curious humans. I couldn’t help but notice the amount of jelly fish on top of each diver. Were they following us, communicating the way only jellyfish could understand and plotting to take over our tanks and masks? After about five minutes, I finally realised my stupidity: these “jellyfish” were just pockets of air coming out of the diver’s mouthpiece as everyone exhaled. After my blunder, I began to notice some of the fish, including a school of pickhandle barracuda. We also saw giant pufferfish, a pacific lionfish, sealfaced puffer, a giant moray, and scores of star fish. For me, the star of the show was the cornet fish, which we saw on the second dive of the day at about 12m depth. This was a musical instrument that lived in the sea and it was the first time I had ever seen something new in the ocean. Diving is tiring business, which is why Sea Bees provides a hearty breakfast and lunch with long

New collection from Princess stays true to roots
H
RH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana has been keeping the style torch lit for a decade. Starting with her Viva Victorian collection in 2005 for the Bangkok Fashion City project to the grand presentation of her full collection last summer, her love for fashion is clearly here to stay. And the fire continues to burn, with the Princess’s fashion brand Sirivannavari’s Pre-Fall 2014 Collection unveiled recently. Looks from the Spring/ Summer 2014 collection suggest ways to bring these bombastic pieces to everyday life. Hosted in front of the Sirivannavari boutique on the first floor of Siam Paragon in a fuss-free atmosphere of short runways and low benches, models zipped up and down four parallel catwalks before posing in front of the store, which was located behind the centre runway. In this collection, lace and sheer chiffon play a key role in many of the pieces. Lace is prominent — as trim on necklines, embellishment on dress hems, mixed and matched with other materials to create pants with a seethrough side strip, even as the main star, such as in the pleated tuxedo
shirt, which flaunts the entire back and sides under a veil. The high-waist skirts this season capture the trending high side slit, while jackets still exhibit a very voluminous and crisply structured shape. The mid-calf pants, with kangaroo pouchlike pockets, are said to be modified from the Thai jong kraben. With the colour palette sticking to the traditional sombre colours of autumn, expect dark hues like black, midnight blue, burgundy and grey. For a better pop of fun, pair these solid staples with other pieces in the collection that bring back signature prints from the brand’s archive. This in-

The galactic colour scheme and feel still lingers, thanks to these prints and accessories from last season, which create a total look. The brand’s signature X-ray belt and gladiators, made from holographic material to resemble bones and vertebrae, are undoubtedly some of the most recognisable pieces from Sirivannavari that are still in the mode. he kingdom’s cosmetics industry is one of the most advanced in Asia. Ranked 17th in world production of cosmetics, and with an estimated value of B56 billion, the industry has seen grown of 10-20 per cent annually for the last decade. However, most of the products flooding the market are superficial if not artificial, with their value deriving mostly from clever marketing and packaging. Luckily there are many authentic and useful products out there, and many of them not costing much at all. Why not take advantage of the abundance of the natural gems of the country. In Thailand’s beaches and rainforests lie some of the most inexpensive and simple beauty products. Here are several gems:
tremely palatable (especially when ripe and with sweet sticky rice), mangoes have copious health benefits. Enriched with antioxidants which help in cell rejuvenation and repair, mangoes help detoxify your skin from the inside and can also prevent the occurrence of acne. In fact, raw mango juice is an excellent astringent that can effectively treat acne. You can boil a slice of mango, unripened or raw, in water and use this water to wash your face, and (assuming you’ve addressed other factors to the cause of your acne) watch the pimples gradually disappear.

Curing coconut
Lately, major beauty brands worldwide, such as Clinique, for example, have been using coconut in their products, and commanding huge prices (their correcting serum infused with “coconut acid” for example). Indeed, coconut has many versatile uses for health and beauty. Is your hair feeling parched from the sun? Remove the rind from half an avocado and put the fleshy part in a bowl. Then add four tablespoons of coconut oil and mix it all together to make a creamy paste. Massage into damp, towel dried hair and comb to distribute evenly. Leave for 20 minutes, then rinse out and shampoo as usual. This paste can also be used to boost eyelash growth and pigmentation. Simply brush it onto your eyelashes.
ave you ever arrived at your destination with your hair flowing exactly the way you want it? I didn’t think so. Oh, the dreaded helmet hair. Obviously it’s not the biggest issue you should be concerned with on a bike, but for most woman (and other sexes with lovely, long hair), it’s a very common and important issue. So here we’ve crafted a few simple solutions – two easy hairstyles – for you. The sophisticated yet incredibly simple knot: this modern chignon will sit below the helmet and will also keep your hair out of your face. Practical yet effortlessly sleek. Start by brushing your hair until smooth, then gather your hair and secure into a tight ponytail at the nape of your neck. Separate your hair into two sections and then wind one section around the other and secure with a bobby pin. Wind the other section around in the opposite direction, securing as you go.
By now the hair should be secure, however for some extra strength you could spray a little hairspray for example The second remedy for helmet hair is to opt for the fun and easy headband braid. Hair tends to frizz and grease during bike rides all due to the slight friction, pressure and perspiration. This hairstyle would banish all that. Start by brushing through your hair to ensure there are no tangles, then plait the hair on your hairline into a hairband, starting at one ear and tucking the excess length behind the other. Then secure the rest of your hair into a simple pony-tail, which you may choose to take out when you reach your destination, Both solutions have been tested and keep you looking good besides. So there you have it, no more embarrassing first impressions, no more redoing hair in the cafe lavatory, and more importantly, even if only slightly, safety first! Jasmine Walker thephuketnews

Could your next car in Thailand be a hybrid? WISE WHEELS Richard Jones richard@buycar24.com

T
he new Accord Hybrid released last month in Thailand is the latest offering from Honda and marks a milestone for the company’s hybrid technology, bringing it inline with arch-rival Toyota. Prior to the new Accord, Honda’s hybrid technology used (what they termed) a Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, meaning the electric motor only supplemented the petrol engine. This differs to Toyota’s full-hybrid system which is capable of actually driving the car by electric power alone, though only for short distances and at lower speeds. Honda’s mild-hybrid IMA system used in the current Jazz, Civic and CR-Z hybrids is a far simpler technology compared with the full-hybrid powertrain you find in all Toyota hybrids and now the new Accord, and this is reflected in the price of the vehicles. Another factor effecting vehicle price in Thailand is whether the vehicle is imported or not. The Accord Hybrid is the fourth hybrid to be assembled in Thailand following the Toyota’s
Prius, Civic, and Camry hybrids. The base Accord Hybrid sells for B1,659,000 Baht and when compared to the base 2.4 petrolengined Accord at 1,549,000 Baht, it makes for quite a compelling option. The Toyota Camry models are similarly priced. What about fuel efficiency? Both the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda Accord Hybrid claim fuel economy upwards of 20 kilometres per litre (kpl). With the petrol equivalents of both these models claiming around 13 kpl, this could give you another reason for considering a hybrid vehicle in Thailand. Just to note that real-world fuel consumption can differ significantly depending on city vs highway driving and, of course, your driving style. Other considerations when choosing a hybrid would be the smoothness of the ride, especially for full-hybrids which excel in stopstart traffic conditions that you may well be experiencing in Phuket at the moment. Then there’s the air-conditioning which I’m sure you will agree is paramount here. Earlier generation hybrids lack an electrically driven air-conditioning, so when the petrol-engine turns-off during idling, the air cooling ability becomes noticeably weaker. This has been resolved in newer models from both Toyota and Honda.
LOWRIDER: This 1978 Datsun pick-up can be spotted at Saphan Hin hosting some bumping, thumping tail-gate parties. The owner Khun Gai says he upgraded from the original 1.5 litre engine to its current displacement of 2.0 litres, and so far has put B700,000 into beautifying his baby.
@thephuketnews
Battery life is often quoted as a concern for hybrid vehicles, but this would appear to be unfounded. There are reports of taxi drivers in Australia topping 500,000 km in a Toyota Prius before having to replace the batteries. Replacement batteries for a Prius cost around B100,000 right now, but as battery technology continues to advance and more hybrids are on the road, this price is predicted to fall. In 2009, the Toyota Camry Hybrid was the first domestically assembled hybrid released in Thailand and with the sales of hybrids consistently growing at around 30 per cent each year since, hybrid vehicles are here to stay. So if you are considering buying a hybrid vehicle in Thailand, you will find there’s now a good selection of hybrids available, both new and used.

I
t’s a great time to get involved in marine conservation. In the 13 years I have lived here the marine conservation landscape has changed tremendously. Never before have more people and organizations come together for the common cause of marine conservation in Phuket. And with the big changes for the better happening in Thailand and Phuket under the new leadership, now is a great time to get involved. The number of efforts currently underway by various charities and NGOs is almost too many to list, so I have created a short list of some of my favourites which I have chosen based on very unscientific criteria from my own perceptions of organizational effectiveness. These organizations, in my opinion, actually produce results directly improving the quality of our marine environment. I encourage all to pick one or two and get involved.
Shark Guardian.
Shark Guardian, a UK-registered charity run by Lis and Branden Ward is located in Khao Lak. They primarily work to improve shark conservation awareness by teaching school children both in Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia about the hugely detrimental effects shark fin soup has on the world’s shark populations in addition to dispelling shark myths. They also work to
educate restaurants and lobby governments and private entities such as airlines to ban shark fin. They are currently recruiting for shark leaders. See sharkguardian.com or Facebook: /SharkGuardianWorldWide for more info.
The Dive Tribe
The Dive Tribe is a Thai registered company based in Pattaya but slowly expanding into Phuket. The owner of the company, Gwyn Mills, is one of the busiest people I have ever met. Equipped with an on-site laboratory, he works tirelessly with local universities, governmental bodies and marine conservation researchers on a laundry list of projects including The Seahorse Project, shark education, awareness and releases, Helix-drilled mooring lines, and artificial reef building. See www.divetribe.weebly.com or on facebook at /Thedivetribe.
Green Fins
Green Fins originated as a United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) with the purpose of establishing a code of conduct for reef users in Southeast Asia and a system for customer-reviewed feedback of those reef users. Green Fins Thailand is run out of the Phuket Marine Biological Center by Dr Niphon Phongsuwan and volunteers such as Petchrung “Aey” Sukpong who work to
improve awareness of the importance of the code of conduct for the future of our reefs. They are accepting applications now for volunteers to help in a variety of roles in reef conservation, particularly in disseminating information to reef stake holders and conducting reef surveys theough the “Reef Watch” assessment program. They have a very detailed website in both English and Thai at greenfins-thailand.org.
SEEK
SEEK stands for Society, Environment, Economy and Knowledge. Primarily terrestrial based, many of SEEK’s projects focus on keeping our coastlines clean through establishing beach cleaners and local “Green Clubs”, as well as working with local universities to test outflow of water from the klongs, and promoting anti-littering campaigns in Thai schools. For more info see myseek.org. While these are four organizations which I have personally worked with and found to be positive and effective, there are several honorable mentions which can be found with a quick search on the internet: Namely, Fin Free, Get Sharks Of The Hook, Go Eco Phuket, The Seahorse Project and the Phuket Environmental Protection Association.
Rayong oil spill damage ‘softened’ over year

he health of marine ecology off Koh Samet’s west coast is looking stable, following the accident in July last year in which crude oil leaked into the sea from an offshore pipeline at a refinery operated by PTT Global Chemical. Though tests showed heavy metal concentrations off and on the coast are within safe levels, the full cost of the damage to marine resources caused by the large oil spill should be clear by September. PTTGC will have to pay compensation for damage based on the financial assessment, said Suphot Tovichakchaikul, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. He said the ministry has been waiting for the results of a Kasetsart University study to evaluate the impact of the spill on local marine ecology. “We will announce the cost
to the public. Although we have not been involved with demands for compensation, it is clear that PTTGC must compensate for ecological losses and the cost of rehabilitation,” he said. The Ministry of Transport’s committee on preventing oil pollution is directly in charge of coordinating compensation relating to the spill. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has filed a complaint accusing PTTGC of violating the National Parks Act by damaging soil, beach and sand. The Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression
Division is overseeing the case. Wichien Jungrungruang, chief of the Department of Pollution Control, said recent environmental tests have shown promising results. The quality of seawater and levels of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) detected in the area are all in line with safety standards. According to the department’s latest lab tests, the proportion of TPH in local seawater was only 0.3 microgrammes per litre in the middle of July. Safety standards allow for one mg of TPH per litre. Tests on sediment from the sea bed show safe levels of heavy metals including lead, cadmium and mercury. The proportion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and TPH in sediment also measured within normal limits, as did the quantity of volatile organic compounds on rocks once covered with oil. Food for thought: brainwaves decoded HEALTH MATTERS Sarah Nockles sarah@santosaphuket.com
Individuals measuring high levels of Gamma waves are smarter, happier and tend to be very disciplined. Our minds are naturally controlled by environmental and situational factors, but it is possible to alter brainwave frequencies through artificial means.

I
n this first part of a two-part article, let me introduce you to your brain waves. Responsible for encoding your thoughts on a cellular level. As we go about our daily tasks, the brain generates rhythmic fluctuations and electrical activity. These frequencies are measured in cycles per second, otherwise known as “hertz”. It is possible to manipulate our brainwaves to promote a better level of overall wellness – or stronger connection among body, mind and spirit. There are five different categories of brainwaves as follows: 1. Beta (12-30Hz): This is the frequency of conscious thought. We usually register this level of activity during the daytime, when being alert, applying logic and critical reasoning is required. If there is an over-abundance of Beta levels, stress, anxiety and over-analyzing occur. This has a flow-on effect of negativity, which can physically manifest into increased heart-rate and blood flow, and cause hypertension. 2. Alpha (7.5-12Hz): The Alpha state is that of the left brain – it is a combination of the conscious and the subconscious where relaxation and daydreaming occur. The Alpha frequency encourages imagination, concentration and visualization. Many successful people measure high levels of 8hz frequency, which is known as the Alpha-Theta border. This is also seen as the entry point into the subconscious mind, and is the optimal frequency for mind programming and allowing the creative juices of your mind to flow. Whilst many of us see Alpha brainwaves as a utopian state to exist in, an excess of this activity is actually undesirable. It can cause depression, lack of attention span and the feeling of being ‘spaced out.’ Equilibrium is key here – we need our Beta waves too! It is important to encourage Alpha waves in order to have a greater sense of wellbeing. How to promote them? Yoga, meditation, breathing exercises and guided visualization. 3. Theta (4-7.5Hz): Usually we only see Theta waves during sleep – light sleep to be specific. They occur during the dream phase (during Rapid Eye Movement) but also in deeply meditative or relaxed states. Theta waves allow the subconscious mind to take control and create ideas and visualizations. The conscious mind is mostly “switched off’ and the subconscious mind takes control. Theta is where ideas, visualizations and suggestions are more likely to enter the subconscious mind. Theta waves are known to be the state in which deep spiritual connections occur. An interesting fact about Theta waves is that they are also present when we suddenly retrieve information – i.e. when we have been struggling to remember something for ages, then it all of a sudden pops up! 4. Delta (1-4 Hz): Delta waves are present in deep, dreamless sleep, or in the deepest stages of relaxation when we are entirely detached from any form of awareness. This frequency is the slowest, but the highest amplitude – where we are entirely in our subconscious mind and information that our conscious mind would prohibit is processed. This is a deeply rejuvenating state where deep healing and regeneration on a cellular level occurs. It is also a state in which human growth hormones are released. As if we needed further proof that a good night’s sleep is essential to our body, mind and spirit being able to function as it should! 5. Gamma (30-100Hz): Here is where it gets exciting, and that is why I have left it until last! Gamma waves are the most recent discovery, mainly because they occur at a much higher frequency, and a much smaller amplitude, which was previously immeasur-
Quintephones are devices for controling sound using brainwaves. Photos: Steve Mann (top) and Glogger able by digital EEG (Electroencephalography) machines. Gamma waves are associated with peak concentration and cognitive function, and they facilitate the linking of information from all
parts of the brain. The movement of the wave itself is quite peculiar; waves move extremely quickly from the front of the brain to the back, over and over again. Because of this action, when in this state we are able to reach mental and physical peak performance. Individuals measuring high levels of Gamma waves are smarter, happier and tend to be very disciplined. Our minds are naturally controlled by environmental and situational factors, but it is possible to alter brainwave frequencies through artificial means. Listening to music, meditation, yoga, massage, reading and practicing random acts of kindness are all ways that we can increase our Alpha and Theta waves. When we have more of this frequency in balance with our Beta waves, it is possible to create increased benefits for the body, mind and spirit. In the next article, I will focus specifically on Gamma waves, which can allow for true magic to happen!

y first experience of truly spicy food was in Thailand, when I was a management trainee at Le Meridien President in Bangkok. I will never forget the Pak Khlong Talat market, and the street food stalls nearby. I was especially taken with lemongrass and coriander, which were difficult to find in the Lyons of my youth. Thai cuisine is based on the balance of five fundamentals flavours: spicy, sour, sweet, salty and bitter. That year I got to know them all. For lunch, I would sit down with the restaurant manager, who would tuck into a larp gai, or spicy minced chicken salad. He then would start sweating as hard as if he had run a marathon. When I questioned him about his extreme tastes, he would smile and say that the chilies left him impervious to Bangkok’s steamy weather. One of my favorite meals then was dtom yam gung, Thailand’s famous hot and sour soup made with lemon grass, kaffir lime

Fire in the hole leaves, ginger, mushrooms, lime juice, coriander leaves, fish sauce, and – of course – loads of chilies. David Thompson, probably the West’s foremost authority on Thai cuisine, has written that dtom yam “encompasses a vast range of dishes, from the extremely basic to the highly complex” – dtom simply means to ‘boil’ and yam to ‘mix’ or ‘toss together.’ In the streets where I ate, dtom yam was served in aluminum hot pots with flames darting out of a hole in the center. In Thailand, diners often cook the raw ingredients themselves, placing each shrimp, mushroom or bamboo shoot into the stock as it bubbled away. Seasoning the soup in the bowl gives the flavors a powerful immediacy, and also allows the diner to adjust for taste. Spice warms the body up and sears your mouth until finally your tongue loses all sensation. A chemical reaction causes these effects: the peppers, or capsicum, increase body temperature, as a result of the chemical compound capsaicin. It is an irritant for humans, and produces a sensation of
burning in any tissue with which it comes into contact. As one writer put it, “Chilli pungency is not technically a taste; it is the sensation of burning, controlled by the same mechanism that would let you know that someone had set your tongue on fire.” Chilli peppers can lower blood pressure, help the body digest starches, and increase saliva. They may also limit the multiplication of bacteria, which in hot climates is a quite useful side-effect. Chillies also produce sweat, which cools the body by evaporation. Christopher Columbus coined the word pepper when he first tasted chillies in the Caribbean, where they have been domesticated and eaten for around 6,000 years. Columbus mistakenly thought the chilli was related to black peppercorns! Chilli peppers differ in intensity: their potency is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). A Mexican jalapeño rates 3,000 SHU, while India’s Naga Jolokia stands at a fiery 1,000,000. So now you know why curries are the perfect beach food!

ext Tuesday, August 12, is the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara, a day which is also celebrated by the nation as Mother’s Day. Her Majesty is regarded by Thais as a mother who has upheld exemplary standards of motherhood since she came into the role on April 5, 1951, with the birth of her first child, Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya. Mother’s Day in Thailand was established in 1976, and Thai people commemorate this day because of the queen’s benevolence towards the needy and poor of the nation, as well as her other roles as Mother to the nation of Thais. Queen Sirikit has captured the hearts of Thai people through her devotion to the welfare and well-being of her people. Preparations for the annual celebration begin weeks before the Queen’s birthday, with authorities and citizens all around the country raising national flags, and houses and official buildings being decorated with coloured lights and portraits of Her Majesty. In the capital, the area around the Grand Palace is decked out with colorful lights and
a firework display takes place in the evening. Early in the morning in Bangkok on August 12, government officials, the Royal Thai Army, students, teachers, and Thais from all walks of life, gather to form a procession and then walk to the Royal Palace. As the procession makes its way through the streets, bands play popular music to honour the Queen. After arrival at King’s palace, the procession presents flowers to a representative of HM the Queen. This is followed by the singing of the song Mother of the Kingdom. In the evening ceremony at the Queen’s garden, government officials light candles to pay respect to the Queen, and pray for her and her good health. The Queen of course is one of millions of mothers nationwide – albeit the most highly respected and revered one – so Thai people also make use of this day to express their heartfelt thanks to their mothers for their unconditional love, and all the other wonderful things that mothers have provided to the native sons and daughters of the Kingdom of Thailand. Across the 76 provinces of Thailand,
Mother’s Day morning starts with the giving of alms to monks. Then, following the nationwide tradition, children kneel down before their mothers to show their love and gratitude. Typically, they present their mothers with garlands of white jasmine and other sweetsmelling blossoms. In return, Thai mothers shower blessings on their offspring. On Thailand’s Mother’s Day, white jasmine flowers can be seen all across the kingdom; the white hue of the flower symbolizes the purity of mother’s true love, which will never change. Regardless of where one is from – the first word that a child learns to speak is “mother”. She is the first person we ever know, so August 12 is a good day to tell your mother – and show her – just how much you love her. And, as we all know, you can never say “I love you” too often to that amazing person who brought you into this world, nurtured you, kept you from harm, and showed you how to live your life with honour, dignity, kindness and grace. Duly, The Phuket News conveys its warm wishes to HM Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara, and all other mothers here in Thailand.

ver wanted to become the next Mark Zuckerberg? Phuket might just become your Silicon Valley starting next week. The largest technology startup competition in Asia is coming to Phuket when the Echelon Thailand Phuket Satellite 2014 event heads to Prince of Songkla University on Saturday, August 16. The event is part of a three-city competition in which hundreds of entrepeneurs with dreams of starting their own business in the technology sector fight to get the attention of some of the top investors in Asia. Echelon has originally taken place in Singapore every year, with top startups from satellite competitions across 11 Asian countries showcasing their wares and making pitches. This year is the first time Thailand will take part in their own Echelon event, taking place September 18 to 19 in Bangkok. In the lead up to the big show, the top five startups from each of the three August satellite events scheduled in Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Bangkok will be invited to the final in September. Earlier this year, over 1,700 delegates from different tech ecosystems around the world participated in the Echelon 2014 event in Singapore. Additionally,
180 pitches were made while over 600 investors and corporate decision makers sourced the event for possible talent and potential startups. In addition to making pitches, Echelon Thailand 2014 will become one of the largest networking events for the tech startup community within the Kingdom. “We knew the time was right to bring the brand and event format outside of Singapore, so as to cast a bigger international spotlight in other SEA markets,” said Mohan Belani, CEO and Co-Founder of e27, the organisers of the event. “Echelon has always been a well-respected brand to startups, investors and sponsors, and we want to take that success and branding to work with local partners and communities to build their ecosystems,” he added. While the deadline for submssions has already passed, organisers are still considering potential startups to enter the competition on a case-by-case basis. Entrepeneurs who wish to participate can enter by visiting e27.co/echelon/thailand/ or email contact@e37.co. The Phuket satellite event will take place on August 16, starting at 2pm, at the Theater in Building 5 of Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus in Kathu. Entry is free.
Thailand bans tropical simulator game
T
oo close to home? Authorities answering to the junta have banned the simulation PC game Tropico 5, saying it could hurt the country’s security. The film and video censorship office allegedly blocked sales and online connection to Tropico 5 because they feared “some part of its content might affect peace and order in the country,” New Era Thailand marketing manager Nonglak Sahavattanapong said. She said the office that banned the game is part of
the Culture Ministry. The office did not immediately reply to a media request for comment. Tropico 5 is the latest
version released by publishers Kalypso Media of the United States. It works on many platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, XBox
360 and PlayStation 4. It is a multiplayer online role-playing game (MORPG) where gamers play as a leader who had seized
power of an island. He must draft a constitution and manage the country, with options of intimidating the media, ruling as a dictator and cheating at elections to stay in power. Thailand’s authorities took power in a military coup on May 22. “We’ve had licences to distribute Tropico 3 and 4 before, but in the fifth installment, the story line has developed further and there might be some part of it that’s not appropriate in the current situation” in Thailand. ecause of the current summer blockbuster season full of superheros, comic books adaptations and machine-battle fests, opinions on Guardians of the Galaxy will be split. Those who read the comic books will praise the film to high heaven, citing the film’s cohesive and fun-loving atmosphere as a clear departure from the Transformers and Thor films. At the same time, film goers sick of the action mish-mash that has become a staple of the recent movie-going experience will look at Guardians as another example of Hollywood’s simple-minded, money-grubbing approach to filmmaking. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle. Guardians of the Galaxy is undoubtedly charming with a story that never delves too deep into the tragic or too far into the rest of the Marvel universe, keeping itself within a framework that is completely it’s own. Still, the film has the potential to be overly-praised due to its unique characters and tangential storyline to other Marvel films. While it is a solid movie, with a lead character that has the potential to become iconic (Peter Quill/Star-Lord), Guardians of the Galaxy will mostly be remembered for it’s tremendous soundtrack of iconic 1970s and 80s pop hits. Songs like “Come and Get Your Love” and “Spirit in the Sky” are cultural reference points that are the only thing that keeps the film accessible to audiences. Music is a plot device – played through a Walkman – that is cleverly used throughout the film: setting up jokes, providing reasons for actions in certain scenes and working as an indicator of context in other situations. The soundtrack, above all else, is what separates Guardians from X-Men and Captain America, keeping audiences engaged and possibly introducing older pop hits to a younger generation (similar to what Guitar Hero and Rock Band videogames did for 60s, 70s, and 80s rock songs). The music is used by Peter Quill/StarLard (Chris Pratt), as a way to stay connected to earth. The film begins with Quill

as a young boy who is picked-up by an alien space craft. Years later, he is an outlaw trying to find a buyer for an ancient artifact he stole. He comes across a female alien assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a genetically modified racoon named Rocket (Bradley Coooper), and a tree-like humanoid called Groot (Vin Diesel). The four of them come together with Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) as they fight off Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) who is trying to intercept the artifact for his own sinister reasons. While they start off as enemies, the characters slowly come together as a unit during their travels around the galaxy. The film is funny witth Bradley Cooper’s (Rocket) voice standing out since it didn’t sound like an A-list actor – Cooper was great because he didn’t sound like himself. This was also the perfect role for Bautista, a former professional wrestler known for his stoicism. Pratt was exceptional in the role of Star-Lord, blending a sense of fun and aloofness with the qualities of a leader who carries a sutble sadness. While Groot was a great character, the weakest performance was Saldana’s as Gamora. She was overshadowed by the rest of her castmates and did not standout. Guardians of the Galaxy is worth at least one watch, if only for the soundtrack. It’s a film that, with a well thought-out storyline, could give birth to a franchise that should rival The Avengers for popularity amongst action film and comic book fanatics.
Sony Picture Studios have been in talkes with Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig to write and shoot the upcoming Ghostbusters 3 reboot. The studio is reportedly looking into possibly having the film focused on a female team of spirit-chasing character, which makes sense given Feig’s background working in comedies with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have expressed interest in returning to the franchise, while Bill Murray has made it clear he had no interest.
Bill Murray in The Jungle Book
Veteran comedic actor Bill Murray has been tapped to supply the voice of the dancing bear Baloo in Disney’s upcoming The Jungle Book remake. The all-star cast already includes the vocal talents of Idris Elba (voicing Shere Khan), Scarlett Johannson (voicing Kaa), Ben Kingsley (voicing Bagheera), and Christopher Walken (voicing King Louis. The Jon Favreau directed film, c o - s t a r r i n g G i a nc a rlo E s p o s it o and Lupita Nyong’o, has been slated for a n Oc t ober 2 015 relea se.
Jamie Foxx is Mike Tyson
A new biopic based on the life of former He av y wei g ht Champion boxer Mike Tyson will star Jamie Foxx as the troubled boxer. Terrence Winter, a writer for The Sopranos and current producer of Boardwalk Empire, has signed on to write the screenplay for the film. Even though Foxx, 46, is only two-years younger than Tyson, 48, producers have indicated that CGI technology will be used accordingly. Foxx is no stranger to biopics as he won an Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of Ray Charles in 2004’s Ray.

Sinclair can be a little bossy, but is a very friendly dog. He was adopted a few months ago but his new owners returned him as he didn’t get on with their other dogs. Sadly they had overfed him and he is now overweight. He is on a diet and light exercise to help him lose his excess weight. We don’t know what happened to Sinclair in the past but his jaw was previously broken and was not taken care of. This has left his jaw a little wonky, but doesn’t cause him any problems. He also has an extra long tongue. All of these little things add to his character. If you would like any more information on adopting Sinclair please call Christy at 093 685 1332 or email her at cristy@soidog.org, or contact the Soi Dog shelter on 081 788 4222, Monday to Friday: 9am to 5pm.
Major League Baseball players go on strike. This will force the cancellation of the 1994 World Series.
■■ August 13, 1918 Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) is established as a public company in Germany.

Phuket United get 6-2 victory in final match at home FUTSAL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
GOALS BY EDSON “GUGU” da Silva and Thanakorn “Max” Piyaprichayut gave the island’s five-a-side football squad a 6-2 victory over Khon Kaen to close out their last home match of the season. Under the watchful eye of Thailand’s National Futsal Head Coach, Vic Hermans, the Andaman Pearl took care of Khon Kaen in a raucous Saphan Hin Gymnasium in Phuket Town last Saturday (August 3). Even with the victory, however, the team are still in 4th place on the Futsal Thailand Premier League table with 57 points – a total of three points shy of 3rd place Siam Navy and four points away from 2nd place Thai Port. C h o n b u r i Bl u e w a ve clinched the no. 1 spot earlier this season, leading the league with 79 points – a full 18 points from 2nd place.
“I’m very happy about this season more than last season. In Phuket, I feel at home,” Gugu said after the match. The sentiments were echoed by his Brazilian teammate “Action” Jackson Santos following the match. “This season was very good, especially at home, this place feels like home. But it was not my plan to finish anything other than no. 1. But not problem I think everyone is very happy. I want to thank the fans very much for their support, they are very loud and come every match,” he said. The team will continue their chase of 2nd place and with only two matches left Phuket United have to win-out to have a chance to finish behind Chonburi on the FTPL table. Next up, the Andaman Pearl will travel to Thai Port for their final match of the FTPL season on August 10 at 4pm. The Phuket News went to print before Phuket United’s match against Suphan Buri on Wednesday (August 6). Class Act Media is a proud media partner of Phuket United.
Phuket FC draw 2-2 with Bangkok; coach resigns FOOTBALL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
THE RONINS DREW WITH 3rd place Bangkok FC last Saturday (August 2) in a seesaw match that kept Phuket FC in 12th place on the Yamaha League-1 table. Phuket took an early lead with a header by Panupong Aramwiroj in the 28th minute following a corner kick. But Bangkok’s Valci Junior answered back in the 60th minute with penalty kick. Just seven minutes later, his teammate, Lee Jae Min, put Bangkok up 2-1. In the 78th minute, sus@thephuketnews
bstitute forward Andre Luiz “Andrezinho” Lopez made a beautiful pass through the Bangkok defense to set up a streaking Eber Henrique who scored the equalizer. Even though Phuket left Bangkok with one point, the Ronins are still in the midst of a five-match winless streak and have only won two out of their last 10 matches. Just one day after the game, Phuket coach Supachai Srilachai stepped down as Head Coach. Hired on July 18, coach Supachai ends his Phuket tenure with no wins, two losses and two draws. Class Act Media is a proud media partner of Phuket FC.
Reuther Moreira to take over Phuket FC FOOTBALL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
huket FC management have tapped veteran Brazilian coach Reuther Moreira to become the team’s third Head Coach this season. Moreira, who just turned 57 years old on July 30, will take over the team for the remainder of the 2014 Yamaha League-1 season following the resignation of Supachai Srilachai last Sunday night (August 3). Supachai is expected to remain with the team for the rest of the
P
season as an assistant coach The team started the season with fellow Brazilian Stefano “Teco” Cugurra Rodrigues as head coach before he resigned on June 22. The Phuket News learned that team officials formally introduced Moreira to the players during a closed-door meeting last Monday afternoon (August 4). “Thank you to club management for the opportunity to have this position. I am familiar with Phuket FC’s style, technique and teamwork. As a coach, I understand the team’s strong points, and know how
to improve the weak points of Phuket FC. And I will do my best,” Moreira said in a statement. Phuket FC defender Tales Dos Santos said he is excited at the prospect of Moreira joining the team, hoping that his leadership will pull the team from their current five-game winless streak. “I think we can be strong again. [The team] must be good together now. Everybody is on the same page and we get new motivation since we have new coach,” he said. “We will show new football for Phuket. So we’re getting
better.” The Sao Paulo-native has a 45-year history in the game and has coached several champion players and teams in Brazil, as well as Thailand over the past decade, including Nakhon Ratchasima, Sisaket FC, Bangkok FC, and most recently led Phitsanulok TSY FC earlier this season. Reuther’s first Yamaha League-1 match will take place this Saturday (August 9) against Chiang Mai FC at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town. Kick-off is set for 6:30pm. Thalang’s Simon Wetherell (21 runs) was the first to go, bowled by Sam Ali in the 5th over. He was the only wicket to fall early as Thalang peppered the boundaries to be 102/1 at the break. Germany proves too powerful for Thailand England seek repeat win as India ponder options CRICKET ENGLAND FACE THE welcome problem of dealing with the consequences of winning ahead of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford which began yesterday (August 7). Victory by the huge margin of 266 runs in the third Test at Southampton last week saw England level the five-match series at 1-1. It also ended a run of 10 Tests without a win for Alastair Cook’s side and saw the captain himself return to form with two fifties, although it could all have been so different had he been caught in the slips on 15 in the first innings. “Now everyone knows what it’s like (to win), the challenge is ‘can we repeat that at Old Trafford, and try to win the series?’”,
said Cook. England had another ‘victory’ less than a day after their Southampton success. James Anderson escaped a ban after International Cricket Council code of conduct commissioner Gordon Lewis dismissed disciplinary charges brought against him by India following his alleged confrontation with Ravindra Jadeja during the drawn first Test in Nottingham. However, the ICC said Tuesday (August 5) they were looking into Lewis’s decision to both clear Anderson and rescind Jadeja’s 50 percent match fee fine. Nevertheless, Anderson – now just 12 shy of equalling Ian Botham’s England Test record of 383 wickets – remains free to play at Old Trafford, his Lancashire home ground. AFP

ermany proved too strong for Thailand on Sunday (August 3), taking just 85 minutes to win in straight sets at the World Grand Prix at Hwaseong Sports Complex in South Korea. Germany won 25-21, 2522, 25-21 in their final Pool B match – it was Germany’s first win of the tournament after losing to Serbia and South Korea. The result ensured Germany extended their impressive record against Thailand to seven wins from eight matches. Thailand finished the first week with a 1-2 record in their pool. They lost to South Korea in their opening game before bouncing back to defeat Serbia. German coach Giovanni Guidetti admitted the Thais could have won the match in a post game statement: “If they were as tall as us, we wouldn’t have won today”.

After that, Thailand will host the tournament for the
third and the final week of the preliminary round from Aug 15-17. They will meet world No.1 Brazil, as well as the USA and the Dominican Republic, in Pool G matches at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok. After the preliminary round, the top four teams will qualify for the finals in
Japan from Aug 20-24. Thailand, who have a young side they are hoping will develop, set themselves a target of finishing in the top 10 at this year’s tournament. In the long-term the team has set its sights on the Asian Games and the World Championship, both events taking place in September. Bangkok Post

THE GLASGOW COMMONwealth Games were hailed as “the best ever” last Sunday (August 3) as the 11-day showpiece came to an emotional conclusion at Hampden Park. England came out on top of the medals table for the first time since 1986, dethroning Australia. With more than 4,700 athletes having competed for 261 gold medals on offer, the Commonwealth Games flag was then entrusted to officials of the 2018 Games to be hosted by Australia’s Gold Coast. By the end of Sunday’s (August 13) action, with just 11 more titles to be decided, England had captured 174 medals of which 58 were gold. Australia finished on a total of 137 with 49 gold.

same stage four years ago. Scottish hopes of a 20th gold medal were dashed when Kirsty Gilmour lost 21-14, 21-7 to Canada’s Michelle Li in the badminton women’s singles final. Transfer news: World Cup bears fruit for Euro clubs FOOTBALL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
E
very four years, the World Cup uncovers football’s biggest hidden gems. Players who were languishing on the bench in big-time clubs or, sometimes, without a team altogether, step up their game during the big tournament in the hopes of scoring an opportunity elsewhere. The 2014 World cup saw some of the biggest disappointments (Brazil and Spain comes to mind) as well as some heartwarming cinderella stories that have paid dividends afterwards. While Germany walked away with the World Cup trophy, the biggest winner is arguably Colombia’s James Rodriguez, who won the Golden Boot with 6 goals. For his efforts, he was awarded a
Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who was a free agent during the World Cup, signed with Malaga of Spain’s La Liga after he conceded just one goal during the group stages and named “Man of the Match” twice. Photo: Flickr transfer to Real Madrid (via Monaco) in a six-year deal worth €89 million. Speaking of Real Madrid, they have been busy this off-season and were clearly watching the World Cup. Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who played su-
perbly for Spanish also-rans Levante the past few seasons and dazzled in the ‘Group of Death’ this year, was signed by the Galacticos for €10 million in a six-year deal. T he World C up also changed the for t unes of Southampton of the Eng-
lish Premier League. Four of their players have transferred, three to Liverpool (England’s Adam Llallana and Rickie Lambert as well as Croatian Dejam Lovren) while one (England’s Luke Shaw) has gone to Manchester United for €37 million.
An afterthought behind Lionel Messi in Barcelona since 2011, Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez was a threat to score everytime he had the ball during the World Cup. This earned him a €43 million transfer to Arsenal, where he will be joined by
fellow World Cup standout Matheiu Debuchy of France. Few knew that Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa – who conceded only one goal during the group stage of the World Cup and was named “Man of the Match” twice – had no club contract. He played his final match for French Ligue 2 team Ajaccio just weeks before. Afterwards, however, he was signed by Malaga of the Spanish La Liga, finally able to compete amongst the big boys where he belongs. These are not the only players to climb the hierarchy of the European club ladder due to their play in the World Cup. France’s Loic Remy left QPR while Belgium’s Divock Origi transferred out of Lille, both of whom joined Liverpool. Ecuador’s Enner Valencia left Mexican club Pachuca for the bright lights of EPL’s West Ham United. Fortunes can change in as quickly as three weeks.

Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez announced last week the end of a dazzling international football career crowned by La Roja’s 2010 World Cup and two European championships. The 34-year-old Barcelona player revealed that he had planned to leave the national side after Spain’s 2012 Euro win, but coach Vicente del Bosque persuaded him to stay. “It has been a wonderful, fantastic period for me. It has been an honour,” said Xavi, who played a decisive role in Spain’s triumphs at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 and in Europe in 2008 and 2012. AFP

Olé: UD Almeria scores three in historic Phuket match FOOTBALL THE “GOLES” CAME LATE BUT quickly. In a wet and wild affair on Surakul Stadium soil in Phuket Town, Spanish La Liga team UD Almeria were able to get their footing in the second half and came away with a 3-1 win over Phuket FC on Wednesday (August 6). The match was part of the LFP Global Challenge, the La Liga’s effort to promote the Spanish style of play, their teams, league and players. This also marked the first-time a European top-flight club played a match on the island. A torrential downpour early in the game made it difficult for both teams to make runs and set-up shots. Phuket took advantage, however, as they played
tested Almeria’s defense in the first half. Striker Ney Fabiano whiffed an open opportunity in the first ten minutes of the match, followed by another chance by Andres “Andrezinho” Lopes chance from the left side of the field. From there on it was all UD Almeria as Thailand national team star Teerasil Daengda – a recent transfer to Almeria – touched the ball several times in front of Phuket’s goal, despite being blanketed by Japanese defender
Yusuke Sato. In the second half, Almeria scored three goals within 15 minutes which fueld the fire for the local club. Phuket’s Cristian Alex answered by cutting through the defense and setting-up local boy Eakkartit Somjit for a consolation goal with just five minutes left to play. “I believe the game was important for Phuket, and also Thailand, since the level of team that Almeria is can only help our players to want to work hard and see what can be achieved,” said Phuket coach Reuther Moreira after the match. Next up, Phuket FC take on Chiang Mai FC in Surakul Stadium on Saturday (August 9) at 6:30pm. Class Act Media is a proud media partner of Phuket FC.
