LIFEGUARDS BACK ON BEACHES NEXT YEAR UNDER B37-MILLION LOCAL BUDGET PUSH The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

N

early B37 million will be spent on providing lifeguards at 12 Phuket beaches next year, Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana announced this week. The budgets were requested individually by seven local administration organisations (OrBorTor) and municipalities, and will be provided, Gov Phakaphong assured on Tuesday (Nov 6). Gov Phakaphong provided a breakdown explaining what funds are to be allocated to providing lifeguards

at which beaches. However, it was not clear for how many months – and which months – the lifeguards will be on duty, though it is presumed that lifeguards will be present and patrolling the beaches during the notorious southwest monsoon, which whips up dangerous surf and creates deadly flash rips. Gov Phakaphong explained the breakdown as follows: 1. Sakoo OrBorTor – B2.5 million to hire 12 lifeguards, with five lifeguards to patrol Nai Thon Beach and seven to patrol Nai Yang Beach every day. “The government contract to be

offered to provide these lifeguards is already in process,” Gov Phakaphong said. 2. Cherng Talay OrBorTor – B3.58mn to hire 15 lifeguards to patrol Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach. “Cherng Talay OrBorTor is also looking for hotels to provide staff to support the lifeguards,” Gov Phakaphong noted. 3. Kamala OrBorTor – B340,000 has been already spent to have lifeguards present in October to November 2018, Gov Phakaphong explained. “Officials this month will offer a contract for B2.3mn to hire 12 lifeguards for 2019, with 10 on Kamala

Beach, and two more to patrol Laem Singh Beach in the future,” he said. Of note, there are currently no lifeguards at Laem Singh Beach as access across the land to reach the beach is closed by a private owner. 4. Mai Khao OrBorTor – B2mn for eight lifeguards to patrol Mai Khao Beach. “Presently, there area only two lifeguards on Mai Khao Beach and two near the airport runway and chief lifeguard,” Gov Phakaphong said. 5. R a w a i M u n i c i p a l i t y – B5,456,600 to provide lifeguards at Nai Harn Beach and Yanui Beach. “This will allow for 15 lifeguards...

Karon Municipality – B11.11mn for 35 lifeguards and six ‘boats’ (likely jet-skis) to patrol beaches in Kata and Karon. “In October to November, Karon Municipality employed 26 lifeguards at B370,000 to surf patrols for tourists in Kata and Karon,” Gov Phakaphong noted. 7. Patong Municipality – B10mn to hire 26 lifeguards to patrol Phuket’s most popular tourist beach with nine lifeguard stations. “The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO, or OrBorJor) has cooperated with the Phuket Provincial Office of the Department Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM-Phuket)

Also, contradicting intitial reports, police last Thursday (Nov 1) confirmed there was a tourist in the taxi at the time of the wipeout. The airport taxi collided with five cars both parked and in motion, as well as fatally colliding with a motorbike, on Thepkrasattri Rd southbound in Srisoonthorn at 8am. The police officer in charge of the investigation, Capt Suporn Mueangkai of the Thalang Police, last Thursday (Nov 1) confirmed that the taxi driver is 23-year-old

funeral too,” he said. “The reason for the accident was that Marut was driving very fast like other taxi drivers. He was not drunk at the time. He has been charged with reckless driving causing death and charged with reckless driving causing damage to property,” Capt Suporn confirmed. Capt Supon noted that Marut underwent blood tests that showed him negative for alcohol and drugs. However, Capt Suporn added, “When the accident happened, there was one foreign passenger in the taxi, but that foreigner was not injured. “Immediately after the accident, the foreigner went straight back to the airport to go home,” he said. Capt Suporn declined to name the tourist, or identify the tourist’s age or nationality.

Brit charged, fined after yacht lightning-strike fire

THE BRITISH SKIPPER on board a yacht that caught fire after a lightning strike and burned to the waterline off Phuket late last Saturday afternoon (Nov 3) has been handed down a three-month suspended jail term and fined B3,000 for operating a boat in Thai waters without the appropriate license. The news was revealed at Phuket Provincial Hall late Monday afternoon (Nov 5) at a meeting called by Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana. Governor Phakaphong called to the meeting all officials in Phuket responsible for marine transportation so he could be fully briefed on what had happened in the yacht fire incident, which saw the 50-foot Beneteau sloop Emmjay catch fire after a lightning strike at about 5pm last Saturday. Of concern was that nine British nationals were on board when the yacht caught fire. All nine were safely recovered by a passing charter fishing boat.

The ‘Emmjay’ burned down to the waterline after being struck by lightning. Photo: Eakkapop Thongtub Wiwat Chitchertwong, Acting Chief of the Phuket Marine Office, reported, “This case was reported to the police, and the Phuket Provincial Court handed down its judgment against Mr David Stewart Toy, who was named as captain of the boat. “He was charged and found guilty of operating a boat without a license. The penalty handed down was a suspended sentence of three months in jail and a fine of B3,000,” Mr Wiwat said. “The second defendant, Mikey Burker, a Thai national who was boat crew, was charged with supporting

Mr Toy in wrongfully using the boat. His penalty handed down was a suspended jail term of two months and a fine of B2,000,” Mr Wiwat added. “All tourists on the boat were safe, and insurance took care of all nine tourists to check in at the JW Marriott Maikhao,” Mr Wiwat added. “This incident forced officials to be aware of water safety and it showed how officials work together in such incidents. Every aspect of how officials responded to this shows people to be confident in water safety in Phuket,” Mr Wiwat said. The Phuket News thephuketnews

Phoenix salvage team resigns over difficulties The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

S

pitz Tech Co Ltd, the company responsible for the salvage of the sunken tour boat Phoenix, has ceased its efforts in recovering the wreck, claiming it has encountered too many problems raising the 29-metre-long boat. Acting Chief of the Phuket Marine Office Wiwat Chitchertwong confirmed the news to The Phuket News Tuesday afternoon (Nov 6). “Spitz Tech Co Ltd, the company that was handling the Phoenix recovery operation, has already cancelled its agreement with the Phuket Marine Office,” Mr Wiwat said. “A new company will start their work from November 7 onward,” he added. Mr Wiwat declined to comment further. The ongoing efforts to recover the Phoenix have been hampered by strong winds and waves during the southwest monsoon months since the disaster-struck boat sank off Koh Hei, southeast of Phuket, on July 5, killing 47 Chinese tourists. Of note, one of the Spitz Tech divers involved in the salvage, Niphat ‘Joch’ Kludnak, 37, died on Sept 29 after fainting at the back of the main salvage boat and falling into the water. The official cause of death accepted by police investigators was given as a ‘lack of oxygen”.

Marine safety checks ahead of high season Divers with the salvage team assess their next step in recovering the Phoenix during the months-long attempts to float the boat to the surface. Photo: PR Dept Mr Niphat had been involved in the salvage mission since it began in August. Spitz Tech was hired by the Marine Department to recover the Phoenix under a B10 million contract effective Aug 1 after the owner of the Phoenix – 26-year-old Phuket resident Woralak Rerkchaikarn – had failed to recover the boat from the bottom of the bay within the 20 days allocated. Marine Department Director-General for the country, Jirut Wisanjit, while in Phuket on Aug 8 said he hoped to announce that the Phoenix will be raised that week. However, efforts came undone when a tether being used to move the boat while

it was still submerged broke, sending it back to the seabed just 400 meters from where it originally sank. Another recent attempt to move the boat – while still submerged – failed again on Oct 30, when another tether broke. In the report by ManagerOnline on Monday, Transport Minister Arkhom said, “From now on, police will be responsible for the salvage as the boat is important evidence to use in legal action against the suspect. “We are also strictly enforcing on marine safety measures. Also for beach management, we are also insisting jetskis zones are operated at the highest safety level.”

Mercer remains charged with reckless driving causing death, Capt Warawud confirmed. “That charge remains. He was charged on the Monday (Oct 15),” he noted. The Phuket News

PH U K ET G OV E R NOR Phakaphong Tavipatana last Friday (Nov 2) led a team of officials to conduct safety checks on ferries and other tourist boats operating out of Chalong Pier as part of the annual safety drive ahead of the high season. Governor Phakaphong carried out the inspection together with Vice Governor Supoj Rotreuang Na Nongkhai and other officials. Chalong Pier was the first port of call for Governor Phakaphong and his team as it is the main departure point for many day trips going out to the popular islands in Phang Nga Bay and along the Andaman coast. Governor Phakaphong said, “I have ordered officers responsible for the operations of all

commercial piers in Phuket to seriously enforce safety in their areas of responsibility. “We have also checked the licenses of the boat captains, papers of crew members, and that all boats have the safety equipment required in case of any emergency,” he said. “Over the years many tourists have come to Phuket, but the supporting infrastructure is still insufficient. We need to continuously ensure we can fully accommodate for tourists as the industry is developing continuously. “Officials must check in and check out all passengers and boats as they arrive and depart from the piers. I have also emphasised to staff that they comply strictly with safety laws,” Gov Phakaphong added. The Phuket News

POLICE HAVE CHARGED a man for illegal possession of a handgun and are waiting to also charge him with deprivation of liberty after he chained himself to his female partner at a home in Srisoonthorn last Friday (Nov 2). Police were called to the house, in Moo 5, after receiving a call from the sister of the woman being detained. Thalang Police arrived at the home at about 1:30pm to find the man and the woman chained together in the car port at the back of the house. Officers entered the premises and unchained the couple. An ensuing search found a loaded handgun on the floor inside the house. Police also seized as evidence a CCTV recording of the incident. Police named the man as Montri Pramaisuree, who police said chained himself with

Gavios, on holiday from teaching English in Vietnam, took a trip to Thailand. In Ao Nang, Krabi, she stopped to ask someone for directions to her hotel, and 28-year-old Apai Ruangwong offered to guide her, and instead led her to a wooded area where he attacked and sexually assaulted her. She managed to fight him off and took off running in the dark, not realising she

Gavios fell 150 feet and miraculously survived. But the fall fractured her spine and she couldn’t move. In immense pain, she cried out for help. That’s when Ruangwong found her again and sexually assaulted her for 10 hours. She was finally saved by locals. Ruangwong was later sentenced to five years in prison. “I was partially paralysed from the waist down,” the Bayside, New York, native

Ride the wave

T

he news this week that 123 lifeguards will be hired to patrol Phuket’s 12 main tourist beaches next year is the best news we have printed in a long time. The failure of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO, or OrBorJor) to provide lifeguards at Phuket’s beaches – as promised 18 years ago when introducing a room rate tax of 1% on all rooms rented out on the island – is now complete. Shame on the PPAO for sparking the Phuket lifeguard crisis by holding fast on offering a budget of only B19.8 million for the Phuket Lifeguard Service (PLS) to provide 98 lifeguards at 12 main beaches when they were already told that the budget was insufficient. To put the blame where it rightly belongs, in September last year PLS Chief Prathaiyut Chuayuan made it plain that

the PLS would accept a budget of about B22mn, but only to provide services for 10 months as lifeguards traditionally do not patrol Phuket’s beaches during the northeast monsoon, when surf along the west coast is flat and safe to swim. He did point out, “that a budget of B30mn per year would be required to maintain year-round patrols by 98 lifeguards at the island’s 12 busiest tourist beaches.” Now it’s going to cost B36.94mn for 123 lifeguards at the same beaches, plus nearly another million rightly spent on training – but that will not discount the fact that Phuket’s drowning death toll at our beaches this year has more than doubled compared with last year alone. There is a long way to go, but this first step is a giant leap forward when looking back at the painful idiocy over the

past 12 months that even saw “lifeguards” stand by unable to help while tourists and locals on surfboards rescued swimmers overwhelmed by the dangerous surf and rips. What we are looking forward to is support in equipment but especially training, for which Surf Life Saving Australia and the Americanbased International Surf Life Saving Association (ISLA) have helped so generously over the years in bringing experienced, qualified surf lifesaving trainers to our shores. They have done so much for us, let’s do a little something for them. The training budget of B997,400 accounts for B249,350 for each of the four planned training sessions, just over B3,100 per head. Let the professionals do it, not just some ring-ins who will allow for a little to be skimmed off the budget cream.

HAVE YOUR SAY GED Defence

Re: The Dark Underworld of Thailand’s Foreign University Students After reading the recent article, GED Testing Service would like to provide information about the high quality and acceptance of the GED exam. The new GED exam that launched in May 2017 is a high-quality exam that measures skills and knowledge commensurate with grade 12 level and above. The GED exam is approved by the U.S. Department of Education and has been certified as fully aligned with the U.S. education standards for college and career readiness. We believe the article incorrectly refers to the GED as a “high-school equivalency certificate generally frowned upon by most of the Western world.” To date the GED exam and diploma/ certificate is accepted by all 50 state departments of education, and the exam has gone through numerous analyses to demonstrate alignment to states’ high school content standards. The GED diploma/ certificate is accepted for admission by more than 98%

of U.S. universities. Scores reflecting performance on the GED test above the grade 12 level are also used for college placement in lieu of placement exams as well as awarding of college credit upon entering a university program. GED graduates can be found excelling in college classrooms in the “Western world” and beyond - in some cases performing better than traditional high school students. GED graduates are enrolling and re-enrolling in colleges at higher rates than ever. More than 90% of these graduates are persisting from one semester to the next sometimes at higher rates than traditional high school graduates in the U.S. The GED diploma/certificate has proven itself to be a highly respected education pathway with the outcomes data to back its credibility. We welcome any questions you may have about the GED exam and the millions of successful graduates that have used this credential to pursue a number of education and career pathways. Army boss vows clean up

Gen Apirat vows to dismiss Isoc officers found guilty of drug offences BANGKOK Bangkok Post

A

r my chief Apirat Kongsompong vows to dismiss Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) officers found guilty of drug offences. The general, also deputy chief of Isoc, said he believed crackdowns on drug trafficking gangs alone may not be enough to root out the drug problem. There is a need to also look at the command, which is a key agency in the state’s anti-drug campaign, and find flaws in the implementation of drug busting measures, for which some Isoc officers are to blame. He spoke of the urgency to launch effective measures to combat illicit drugs during a meeting on Monday (Nov 5) with chiefs of Isoc units in 77 provinces, including Bangkok. The meeting discussed the adoption of a zero tolerance policy on corruption among any members attached to the agency tasked to help fight the illicit drug trade.

Gen Apirat Kongsompong, seen here at a press conference after he became army chief on Oct 1, has vowed to clean up drug trafficking operations enabled by Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc). Photo: via Bangkok Post Isoc officials who become involved with the drug trade will be dismissed because it is a serious offence that is often related to the acquisition of illegal weapons, said Isoc

spokesman Maj Gen Thanathip Sawangsaeng, quoting Gen Apirat. Maj Gen Thanathip said that some armed minority groups in neighbouring coun-

tries produce and sell drugs for money, which is then used to finance the purchase of weapons. This prompts Thai authorities to keep an eye on the

activities of cargo and people along the border to prevent drug smuggling. Gen Apirat stressed in the meeting that Isoc must cooperate with other agencies

to tackle transnational drug trafficking. “Drugs must be stopped at the borders,” Maj Gen Thanathip said, referring to Gen Apirat’s policy. Authorities must also intensify searches at roadside checkpoints during the holidays as some motorists may secretly be carrying crystal methamphetamine (ya ice), methamphetamine pills (ya bah) and marijuana. Gen Apirat also touched on Isoc’s role in next year’s election. The agency is duty bound to help maintain order during the poll. The kind of assistance it will lend to the Election Commission will be decided by the regulator, he said. At present, Isoc units are working closely with the provincial governors on all security issues. Isoc is waiting for a new national security policy from Prime Minister Prayut Chano-cha – the Isoc chief – next month. “That will provide Isoc with clearer working guidelines,” Maj Gen Thanathip said.

Tourism package ready TOURISM

Chatrudee Theparat and Suchat Sritama

A

series of tourism stimulus measures, including visa fee waivers for citizens of some countries and improved safety and security rules, is about to go before the Cabinet as the industry looks for a boost in the last two months of the year. The stimulus aims to draw foreign travellers to Thailand during the peak season after the recent sharp decline in Chinese tourists, who make up roughly one-third of arrivals. Measures include a tax break for jewellery purchases, a tourism package with free flights to secondtier tourist provinces, and a waiver for visas on arrival. Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said earlier this week that the measures should be enforced this month, but was non-committal about the exact date for Cabinet approval. “The government has already assigned the Immigration Bureau to study waiving the visa-on-arrival fee for visitors from 21 countries,” he said. “The fee exemption and other incentives are expected to be submit-

Adith Chairattananon, Secretary-General of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (Atta), said the Immigration Bureau was set to propose to the Cabinet on Tuesday (Nov 6) approval of visa privileges

to lure back foreign tourists for the high season. “The association has demanded the government offer the waiver of the visa-on-arrival fee for tourists from Nov 15 to Dec 31, and offer multiple-entry visas for a six-month period from November 2018 to May 2019,” said Mr Adith. The visa-on-arrival fee is B2,000 per tourist and Atta suggested it be waived for visitors from 21 countries. The specific aim of the multiple-entry visas are Chinese tourists. “If our demands are turned down,

the private sector will continue seeking other aid measures, as tour operators in the mainland are also awaiting action from the Thai government, not only for visa privileges but also remedy measures following the tour boat calamity in July.” Atta and travel companies have been asking the government for help after Chinese arrivals plunged since 47 Chinese tourists were killed in the Phoenix boat disaster off Phuket. Mr Adith said the Chinese market remains the most important for inbound business.

Last week, the association cut its forecast for tourist arrivals from the mainland to 10.5 million this year from 12mn. “We’re afraid the country may lose more than B50 billion this year if we are unable to restore the Chinese market,” he said. Atta said travel companies and operators involved with inbound tourism have also pledged to help the government improve safety and security to ensure confidence among foreign tourists travelling in Thailand. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said the agency is committed to continuing to restore tourist confidence as part of the short-term measures. Starting this month, TAT’s ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Passport Privileges’ campaign is aimed to draw foreign shoppers. The campaign ends in December. The TAT is also scheduled to participate in the China International Travel Mart in Shanghai on Nov 16-18. TAT will organise a New Year Electronic Music Festival in Pattaya on Dec 30-31 as well as major countdown events in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and Chiang Mai on Dec 31. Bangkok Post

In their appraisal, Armistad noted that WebInTravel had branded the MICE market – after corporate travel – as the next most lucrative sector for hotels and is the slowest in tech adoption. So it’s unsurprising that disruptive travel companies are shaking up the market. For independent hotels, this means both opportunity and increased competition, and now Airbnb has finally announced that ‘Airbnb for Work’ is expanding into services and experiences for a workplace audience to “help

Airbnb entering the MICE market has venue and service providers balancing the threats with the new opportunities. foster a sense of belonging – even at work.” For those who have been monitoring Airbnb’s growth, it’s been clear that the company has been looking to expand into the workplace. Back in April 2018, Airbnb for Events was launched, aimed specifically for planners. The tool encourages attendees to book Airbnb accommodations through an interactive map of Airbnb listings embedded directly on

the event site. A i rbnb re por t s t hat 700,000 companies have had employees sign up and book with the company’s business platform. Of all these companies, more than 300,000 – up from 275,000 only weeks ago – are directly engaged with Airbnb to help manage their travel. A statement on Airbnb’s website said, “Offering unique ways to travel for work will remain core to Airbnb for

Work, but we estimate only 25% of employees within a company travel for work... With Airbnb for Work’s new expansion into team-building experiences, homes for offsites and meetings, and relocations, we now have an opportunity to bring the magic of Airbnb to the rest of the workforce.” Airbnb is banking on corporate customers seeking experiences and something different from a traditional hotel meeting room. However, with an annual global growth rate forecasted at 7.5% from 2017 to 2023, the MICE industry was valued at US$752 billion in 2016 and is projected to reach US$1.245 trillion in 2023, according to Allied Market Research. This means that there is plenty of room for competition and independent hotels should not be worried about Airbnb stealing away MICE business. But independent hotels must become smarter in how they design and market venues. In the June 2018 edition of the IACC’s Meeting Room of the Future: A Survey of Meeting Venue Operators

and Suppliers, there were a number of insights that support Airbnb’s assumption that corporate delegates are seeking experiences, and more worryingly for hotels, that there is a disconnect between what customers want and what venues believe they want. For its annual survey, the IACC collected feedback from meeting planners and a range of venues, from hotels to conference centres. Meeting planners indicated that their role not only involved more “experience creation” but that experience creation would become more important in the coming years, pointing to Millennials and other younger generations as the drivers of this trend. However, venue operators are heavily reliant on meeting planners to create experiences and 43% felt it was never or only sometimes their role to create experiences. Some 60% of venue operators said they feel that the flexibility of meeting spaces will become more important over time. Suppliers named f lexible, “non-traditional” meeting room furniture as one of the biggest trends in

meeting space development and design over the past three years. Many venue operators have noticed last minute requests for meeting space layouts to be changed midmeeting to stimulate and reinvigorate the delegates. As such, venues are focused on ensuring their meeting spaces can be easily adapted to a variety of events and audiences. While in 2017, 57% of venues said they do not offer collaborative technology to client, this number decreased to 38% in 2018. And in fact, 28% said they offer these services free to use (a dramatic increase from 11% in 2017). Video conference and screen sharing are the most popular technologies on offer, but virtual reality has seen the biggest uptick in adoption. In response to the market shifts, Armistad strongly recommended that MICE providers conduct a thorough audit of the hotel’s meetings spaces (how many they have, how often are these booked, what events are the most popular, which are the least popular, how many delegates attend on average, etc) as well as a review of their competitors and the local market (what annual events are in the area, what types of events are popular with the competitors’ customers, what trends are driving the MICE industry in the area, etc). They also encouraged providers to get in touch with a member of an experienced business development team to discuss the business’s MICE goals and how the expert advice could help the business meet them. THE GREAT ESCAPE A peaceful weekend on Cape Panwa

Wonderful vistas at Cape Panwa. David Jacklin editor1@classactmedia.co.th

T

he pace and persistent nature of the busy modern world often finds us seeking a haven to unwind in those precious days off or weekends. The term ‘haven’ derives from the Old Norse word for ‘harbour’, a place where ships find shelter from the storm. So fitting that my favourite haven on the island just happens to be abundant with picturesque coves and beach-lines harbouring yachts and sea craft. That refuge is Cape Panwa. Panwa is our southeastern peninsula. In my experience there always seems to be a feeling of escapism, of ‘otherness’, on such geographical areas which boldly jut out into the waters in resilience from the mainland. Every time I drop off the busy Chao Fa East Rd into the Panwa region, there’s an almost immediate sense of calm... that I’ve entered a slightly different realm. Maybe it’s the broad open main roads, mixed with the beauty of the coastal winding lanes which carry a fraction of the bustling traffic that criss-crosses our island daily? Could it be the influence of the predominantly Muslim community and villages, giving an air of peaceful introspection? Whatever mojo Cape Panwa conjures, it’s certainly a pleasant feeling. A sense that you’ve suddenly been transported somewhere else… into the slow pace of a calmer world. The scenery is stunning from every angle. Jungle mountains hugged by the encircling coastline and far reaching views of the small archipelago of surrounding islands. It’s an idyllic environment for a short break with a partner or family weekend retreat. And that’s precisely what I’m up to on this road trip around the region. Lucky me. To really immersive yourself in Panwa and feel refreshed from the getaway, you really need to stay overnight. There are a range of accommodations from @thephuketnews

Cloud 19 Beach Retreat. five-star luxury resorts to rustic beach huts. But it’s the privacy and charm of a small waterside hotel that floated my boat on this trip. Cloud 19 Beach Retreat is a beautifully designed, niche boutique resort, which hugs the mountainous southeastern coast, gifting its residents a panorama of spell-binding views across Chalong Bay from first morning light to last thing at night. Its seclusion and setting makes it a sure and comfortable bet. The rooms are modern and clean, with all the amenities that show the attentive staff’s due care. Rooms come with complementary breakfast, which is served pool-side in the lobby lounge. It’s virtually impossible not to relax in the setting, with your mind wandering across the blue hues of Chalong Bay whilst you sip your morning coffee and choice of continental, Thai or Chinese plate. They also have a full menu and happy hour designed to meet your grazing needs throughout the day. For those ready to slip away into oblivion, Cloud 19 offers spa and massage services, and for the more energetic among you, head out into the blue with their kayak and paddle board hire. I’ve been to Cloud 19 on more than one occasion,

All set-up for the day exploring the peninsula, there are a number of entertainments depending on your party and tastes. Khao Khad Viewpoint is a standing tower atop one of the highest and remote hills in Phuket, giving full 360° views out over the southern and eastern region. If it’s all about a real pampering, Cool Spa Phuket is a beautiful luxury spa which offers traditional techniques alongside modern spa treatments such as sport massages, refreshing herbal exfoliations and soothing full body wraps. One for the whole family, Phuket Aquarium and Conservation Centre is a charming and chilled encounter with the weird and wonderful sea-faring creatures from Thailand’s lakes, rivers and the Andaman Sea. It’s not a vast aquarium, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in local charm. The aquarium presents a diverse range of aquatic species, feeding shows and touch pools, and a new 180° theatre screening room to get a close-up experience of underwater life. Continued on page 12

Baba Hot Box at Sri Panwa Hotel.

Premium meat and seafood plates to suit all tastes.

The chefs work the Josper Grills. The science and nature trail outside of the main building takes you on a tour of the attached Phuket Marine Biological Center and conservation facilities. This includes a hatchery to observe the breeding and raising of young sea creatures including seahorse and cuttlefish. Their Sea Turtle Pool allows you to observe turtles recovering from injuries sustained in the surrounding oceans, or watch the baby sea turtles paddling around in the nursery. All of this adventure should have worked up a healthy appetite by now, and there are a wide range of eateries to continue your exploration of Cape Panwa. From street food stalls lining the beach-side roads, local markets that spring to life in the village communities, to high-end restaurants in the collection of hotels that offer walk-in service. One such gem, located in the luxury Sri Panwa Phuket Hotel, is the Baba

Hot Box. Sri Panwa boasts a range of restaurants from local to Chinese cuisine, but if grilled meats and BBQ takes your fancy you won’t find better than Baba Hot Box. This is no ordinary ‘throw a shrimp on the barbie’ sort of joint. Far from it. Even as you are taken through the immaculately maintained forested grounds and buildings of Sri Panwa, you get a sense of wonder that you are about to experience something special when you first glimpse this unusual and beautiful glass box venue surrounded by jungle and water features. But it’s when you step inside that you realise you’re really in for a treat. For starters, all the food is cooked in the Spanish Josper BBQ. This specialist BBQ is a combination of a grill and an oven in a single silver box of joy. The result is a high operating temperature which allows the chef to grill and roast to perfection, but preventing the quality meats from baking, and thus retaining

The Baba Hot Box has a phenomenal a la carte array from premium meat and seafood dishes, a combination of in-house sauces and enhancing vegetable and salad sides. There’s so much to describe here. Each of the beef, lamb, pork, chicken and seafood selections will induce a hunger pang. There’s ribs, there’s T-bones, collars, briskets, burgers and breasts. Focusing on a few highlights, the Wagyu Beef Bacon was as succulent as it was strong in flavour. The beautifully charred cut had the ideal crisp edges coupled with a juicy pink interior and the bacon rind giving the fullest of flavours to the finest of meats. The two piece Tiger Prawns were a meal unto themselves, grilled with a butterfly cut with an exceptional marinade. And if you’re lucky enough to visit when they have a Kyoto Steak Sandwich special, I implore you to this taste sensation. As you might expect it’s certainly not cheap, but you’re here for top-quality meats served by the attention of the skilled chefs and staff that can cater for your BBQ dream meal in the perfect setting. It’s a worthwhile treat. Heading back over the hills from the southern-most tip to my accommodation, the nighttime views on these coastal roads are fantastical. And there are hidden delights along the moon-lit drive, such as The Cove (Ao Yon Bay), a secluded beachfront with a handful

The Ship Inn Bar and Restaurant is a long-standing favourite here to order a night cap and stare out at the twinkling lights of passing ships in the night. Cape Panwa is an arcadia of relaxing and enjoyable experiences. For me, it’s the perfect weekend away without the fuss of having to travel too far. It’s a peninsula on our doorstep worth your trouble to explore, and there’s plenty of surprises along the way of your adventure into this most attractive of local delights. Mindfulness Weekend World-renowned Buddhist scholar offers free seminar at UWC Thailand Samantha Gayfer

U

nited World College Thailand (UWCT) is increasingly known on the island and within the global UWC movement for its commitment to a mindful, sustainable and peaceful education. As awareness of the school’s program spreads, the school community continues to attract some of the world’s foremost minds on meditation, happiness and mindfulness including the “world’s happiest man” Matthieu Ricard and one of the most progressive Buddhist scholars in the West, B. Alan Wallace, Ph.D. Ordained by the Dalai Lama after spending 14 years training as a Buddhist monk, Wallace (Stanford University) has dedicated the last 40 years to philosophical study, Buddhism, and teaching. His translations, popular publications, talks, and academic essays give testimony to his fervent desire to share knowledge. Wallace continually seeks innovative ways to integrate Buddhist contemplative practices with Western science to advance the study of the mind. In a rare opportunity, Wallace will be in Phuket to give a complimentary two-day lecture hosted by UWCT from November 17 to 18. The seminar will focus on four types of intelligence that are essential for bringing about optimal mental health and balance: conative, attentional, cognitive, and emotional intelligence. Over the two days, Wallace will explore how mental illness occurs when one or more of these mental faculties is hyperactive, deficient, or dysfunctional, while also discussing how exceptional levels of mental health and well-being can be developed by cultivating each of these four kinds of intelligence individually and synergistically. To clarify how this may apply in the context of our daily lives, Wallace explains: “For many people most of the time, our default mode is rumination, or semi-conscious mindwandering, and this has been found to be exhausting, unsatisfying, and counterproductive. To counteract this habit, I encourage people to cultivate

This prevents stress, rather than treating it, like a band-aid, for it addresses the underlying causes of stress, rather than just treating its symptoms.” Wallace’s visit underpins the school’s perspective that mindfulness is integral to a 21st century education. While on campus, Wallace will also participate in the official opening of UWCT’s very own Mindfulness Centre. The centre is used each day for secular mindfulness practice by classes ranging from Nursery to Grade 12, where students explore how to ‘pay attention to the present moment, on purpose, with kindness and curiosity,’ with the school’s Mindfulness Mentor Kru Lucy Keller. UWCT’s boarding students also use the space for meditation and yoga in the evenings to ready themselves for a restorative night’s sleep. To attend the two-day seminar at UWCT, which runs from 9am to 3pm each day, please book a seat by emailing the school on rsvp@ uwcthailand.ac.th. LET’S GET BENT Kim White kim@mindbodyyogasystem.com

ello and welcome to November. This month I want to talk to you about self massage, focusing in particular on the lymphatic system. I have a yoga class that I teach regularly that incorporates a few self massage techniques that help to get the fluids of the body moving. I would love to share three of these simple techniques with you this month. We tend to forget that we have two hands of our own that are completely free, there is no charge to self massage and it is OK to touch yourself! I always like to use analogies when explaining what we are trying to achieve during a particular yoga class. The analogy I use when teaching this

Self Massage class is this: I like to think of the body as a river bed and the breath as the water. When you come across a river of water that is clean, fresh and free flowing, it looks inviting and everyone wants to dive in and have a swim. But when that river becomes dried up and there are only pools of water that are held there by rocks and sticks, the water becomes stagnant and stinky and no-one wants to dive into those murky waters. Our body is the same. When we go to sleep at night, our bodies are more still and the circulation slows down. When this happens there is a layer of ‘fuzz’ (the interfaces between the muscles) that grows between the skin and the muscles. When we wake and move, get up, get dressed, brush our teeth, make the bed and so on, the circulation increases and flushes or melts most of this “fuzz” away and the sliding of the muscles becomes more fluid. But just like the river there are pockets, joints and tight areas that stagnate and over time without

elping those who need it. It is said, and largely accepted that virtually every person knows someone; a friend, co-worker or family member, who has a drug or alcohol problem. In my profession I receive calls or e-mails weekly from people who want ideas about how to help someone who is displaying some kind of addiction issues, but is reluctant to get help or even discuss it. Common warning signs that a person may be experiencing a drug or alcohol addiction are: 1. Frequent changes or cancellations of social or work plans. 2. Unexplained financial problems. 3. Unusual mood swings. 4. Increased isolation and lack of previously enjoyed hobbies or activities. 5. Obvious changes

in physical appearance. 6. Emotionally distance or being evasive with family and friends. While not one of these symptoms indicates a definite substance abuse problem, the presence of several of these can be concerning and warrant showing interest. When a person is under the control of a substance addiction their first response to confrontation is denial. They may become angry that someone is intruding in their personal business or may be talkative in a way that justifies or minimizes their use. Whatever the person’s potential response is, it is usually better to take a “soft” approach. That is express concerns and ask questions, as opposed to making accusations and demanding information.

Once a person has invested in denying their problem, they are very reluctant to later admit you were right. Expressing concern and leaving the door open to talk if they later wish to allows the person to eventually admit they need help without a loss of “face”. Many people choose to engage professional intervention services to approach the person they are concerned about. B y using a 3rd p ar t y emissary, there is reduced risk or resentments and relationship damage resulting from unwanted “intrusion”. If someone you know is in danger and is resistant to receive help, there are formal and professional services that can help. Often these services offer a free and no obligation consultation.

Massaging the foot can help the lymphatic system rid toxins from your body.

Ready to get rid of those ‘bingo wings?’ massage or vigorous movement these pockets get built up and can become problem areas of fluid retention. Self massage is a great way to get these stagnant pockets moving and free flowing again. Here are a few interesting facts about lymphatic drainage: - Lymph vessels carry 75% of the waste rejected by our cells. - Blocked lymphatic can lead to water retention, cellulite, exhaustion, stretch marks and swollen ankles. - If lymphs begin to circulate poorly due to blockages, vital functions can become impaired. - Blockages can prevent the drainage of water and toxins. - When the body stores too much fat, the fatty cells become large and constrict blood and lymph vessels. The benefits of lymphatic massage include: - Detoxification of the body. - Regeneration of injured or wrinkled tissue. - Great anti-aging effects. - Relief of sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infections, constipation, insomnia, cellulite and obesity. Let me share with you now three self massage techniques that help common areas in the body that hold fluid. 1. The feet are the foundation of the body and when they are swollen, stiff and uncomfortable the rest of the body suffers. • Sit on a chair or the floor and place your foot on your thigh or on a pillow with the sole of your foot facing upwards. • Use both your thumbs or opposite elbow to press into these particular areas on your foot. • Keep the downwards pressure going as you draw circles around the point. • The first point is under the pad of your big toe. • The second point is between the second and third toe under the pad where it slightly rises. • The third is the arch of the foot (plantar fascia) – working from the top

of the arch to the bottom of the arch above the heel and push from the inside of the arch to the outer edge in a line. 2. I call this technique ‘the bash’ and it is great for the area around the bottom, hamstring and outer thigh. • Sit on a chair or the floor and hold your ankle with your opposite hand, the knee is bent towards the chest. • Make a fist with your other hand, thumb next to the index finger, and hit your fist into the bottom, the hamstring and outer thigh. Much like hitting dust off a dirty hanging floor rug. 3. I call this technique the ‘bingo wing buster’ (upper arms) but this technique is also great for the legs, bottom and mid-section. • Lift your forearm and grasp the forearm firmly with the opposite hand. • Squeeze the hands into the arm and twist the hand in one direction as the arm twists in the other direction. Much like a ‘Chinese burn or a charlie horse’. You will feel a warm, pinching sensation on the skin. • Walk this twisted squeeze up and down the entire arm. I also would like to mention that drinking plenty of water (two litres a day) is also a great way to help flush the toxins from the body and works very well when incorporated with these simple self massage techniques. Have a great month & happy stretching. MAMMA MIA THEPHUKETNEWS.COM

La Trattoria at Dusit Thani Laguna relaunched THE CULINARY DETECTIVE Chris Watson chriswatsonth@gmail.com

“M

amma Mia”, literally translated means ‘my mother’, however in Italian slang, it is an expression of exclamation and joy. As I am seated in the recently refurbished La Trattoria, I suspect I am about to enjoy truly authentic Italian cooking. The restaurant has a contemporary feel, furniture is comfortable and I am cocooned in subtle shades of aquamarine. The interior complements this new culinary direction. A new chef is in town – Mirko has arrived from Rome. Not satisfied with recently implementing a rustic-style menu featuring both the de-rigueur classics from his home country alongside his own signature dishes, he is also at the helm of this new initiative that I will be experiencing tonight. Saturday evening Italian ‘famiglia’ style buffet. I have been invited to savour the very first of these weekly events. As all of us avid cinema goers know from the classic Italian gangster movies, family in Italy is sacred. It is deeply embedded in the national culture, and this passion also extends to food. An integral part of this culture revolves around combining the two; so, dining with one’s entire extended family involves a massive spread of sharing dishes, white and red grape libations to accompany, and the atmosphere must be fun. This is what Mirko and the team have recreated on Saturday evenings at the price of B1,999 net per person including limitless quality Italian beverages. I begin with the antipasti selection; an extensive range of premium Italian charcuterie such as Salsiccia piccante and Prosciutto di Parma. I also spot a hand-carved San Daniele Ham alongside some very tasty appetisers of

Rare cheeses presented at the ‘famiglia’ buffet. Vitello Tonnato and Beef Carpaccio with rocket, parmesan and a sprinkling of balsamic. Other classics have not been forgotten such as a crunchy bruschetta with glistening baby tomatoes and a creamy rich burrata cheese. My plate is now quite full, however I’m caught by a number of seldom seen cheeses. I add generous slices of full bodied Testun cheese enriched with a full red grape and smooth and creamy Caprino goat cheese. The cheese will go well with the freshly baked breads, which has been studded with both green and black olives. On returning to the buffet tables, which dominate one of the rooms, I choose some fresh oysters and prawns from the seafood selection and am tempted by a bowl of comforting pumpkin soup with which to finish my bread. Upon clearing my plate, I wander outside to a covered terrace and a live station serving up multiple varieties of pasta, prepared in a sauce of your choosing, from carbonara to bolognese. I plum for tagliatelle frutti di mare (seafood), containing squid, clams and prawns. Lasagne and other pastas are also available from the buffet. I am also advised by Chef Mirko that a new pizza oven will be installed in the next week. Continuing with the buffet, I select a wonderfully delicate sea bass in a creamy sauce with peppers and a few roast potatoes. Reaching the end of my evening, I believe I have just enough capacity to

enjoy a light dessert and go for a decadent tiramisu. Chatting with Chef Mirko after the meal, he shares with me his new a la carte menu, currently available on all other evenings at La Trattoria. I can see from the content this will also be well worth a visit. I see traditional dishes alongside his signature dishes. I note marinated octopus in a capsicum sauce, risottos made with Carnaroli rice – the preferred longer grain rice, numerous vegetarian options and

The desserts list also does not disappoint; coconut crème brulee with caramelised pineapple jumps off the page as does a Ricotta cheese strudel with sour cherries. As I depart La Trattoria across the immaculately manicured lawns of the Dusit Thani Laguna, I reflect on my experience this evening; this is rustic and authentic Italian regional cooking, bringing out the best from fresh produce with big bold flavours in an inviting environment. I am excited to return to experience Mirko’s a la carte creations. And so, until the next time, to Mirko and his team, I say “ciao” and “graziemille” or goodbye and thank you very much! The breakfast of champions Food for the mighty at Poached

David Jacklin editor1@classactmedia.co.th

J

ohn Gunthur, the American journalist and author, once wrote, ‘All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast’. Journalists can be a cranky bunch at the best of times, and if you have to deal with them, make sure they’ve had at least a damn fine cup of coffee first. Fear not readers, I have just been to Poached, and am now happier than a clam in high water. Poached is the brainchild of Alex Stathos, the man who brought blissin-a-bun to Chalong with his first island outlet, The Spartan - Burger and Souvlaki Bar. And you won’t have far to go to experience both, as Poached has recently opened right next door. Incidentally, for Spartan lovers, a new pop-up restaurant is opening on Nov 20 over at The Beach Heights Resort on Kata Beach. Alex is a big man. In frame, character and passion, and you can’t help but be drawn in to his vivacity and mischievous humour. The diversity of his CV for a gent in his thirties is nothing short of remarkable. From an early career in the military, to owning his own

construction and corporate hospitality companies, to donning the apron as a skilled chef… this man has a lot of impressive hats. As a first generation Greek immigrant, Alex had moved to Melbourne as a child, and that city’s desire for a hearty brunch coupled with his family’s heritage as restaurateurs led him to open a range of eateries, first in Australia, now here in Phuket. “Poached offers a slice of Melbourne. Our unique menu has rich, decadent and healthy options to get you kick started,” Alex explained. And that’s about as understated as Alex can get. Poached’s inspired menu is more than a bold and hungerinducing wish list, and you’ll not find anything like it on the island. But it is the culinary detail and care when you’re presented with your order that is the most welcome surprise for a breakfast joint. The Pulled Pork Eggs Benny perfectly frames Alex’s decadent offerings as well as his creativity. Twelve hour cooked pork is presented with granny smith slaw, apple cider hollandaise sauce, poached eggs cooked to perfection, balsamic glaze, pomegranate seeds and olive oil that has been infused with mint… all sitting on the

This is not only the breakfast of champions, it’s what Hera serves up to Zeus on Mount Olympus every morning. The Breakfast Burrito is an inspired recipe from a Mexican friend in LA. The corn tortilla houses imported haas avocados, jalapeño salsa, house-made chorizo, scrambled egg and Monterey Jack cheese to melt the grumpiest of morning risers. Unfortunately, the 8-year-old B team and 10 year-olds were knocked out in the group stages. Orange surrender to Shot Bar

Despite French resistance, Orange Bar remain stuck to bottom of RPL POOL Barry Craig

O

range Bar stay bottom of Rawai Pool League Division A after Monday’s (Nov 5) matches. They visited second place Shot Bar, who were heavy favourites. The singles legs went as expected. Shot’s Pan and Harry led the charge in the doubles to go 5-0 up, but French duo Jonathan and Pierre weren’t up for surrender and beat Duncan and Stefan to get a point for Orange. Beerleg honours went to Shot Bar for a 6-1 win to stay second. White Hart hosted their friends from Pita Bar and first to face-off were captains Jig and Super Ding and mistakes by both players saw the game go into the deciding frame but Jig finished off in style. A razor-sharp Richard brought Pita Bar level, clearing up a couple of scrappy frames. Stefan could only watch on in awe of White Hart’s Ben W, who nearly slept in for this match, but couldn’t have dreamt of a better performance. Pita’s Grant started well against Phil, however, an uncharacteristic miss in the deciding frame left Phil to put the White Harts 3-1 up.

Michi playing for Masaya Bar in their 6-1 home win against Spot Bar. Photo: Philipp from Roses Jigstar’s raw talent and Ben B’s brilliance only allowed Stefan and Grant a single shot each at the table in the first doubles game. The Pita Bar duo are much more prolific at getting shots at the bar. Super Ding and Richard deservedly won a strategic doubles to narrow White Hart’s lead going into the beerleg but it was White Hart who won the beerleg for a 5-2 victory in this famous fixture.

Black Pearl were paid a visit by league leaders Black Sheep. It was all square after the first couple of legs but Black Sheep moved ahead when Dominic beat Tommi in a close fought contest. Home team Grega’s recent rising superstar status was brought into question when he was given a lesson in pool by Nanni to give Black Sheep a 1-3 lead. Black Pearl pulled off a shock

first doubles leg win. Dave’s smile widened when he and Bang gave the hosts a chance by pulling a point back, but Goh and Riky sealed victory in the second doubles and Black Sheep polished off the beerleg for a 2-5 win. Future Bar and Mango Bar both had a chance to go fourth with other results going their way. Barry was first up against Wan, who had stepped in at late notice for

Mango. The Future Bar superstar confidently took the first frame. Overconfidence, however, in both the second and third frames led to missed pots. Wan’s finishing was never sloppy as she came from behind to put Mango in front. Future’s Otis took the first frame against Thong, but again Mango managed to squeeze a win. Wayne was determined not to give Dave an early 64th birthday present to put Future Bar back in the game, however Gregg’s solid performance against Future’s Fod put the visitors 1-3 up after the singles. The spoils were shared in the doubles and the beerleg’s deciding frame went to Future as some consolation in this 3-4 battle for fourth. Ian’s long awaited return to Rawai, not only for the sweet treats he brought me from England, saw him line up for Spot Bar in their away match to Masaya Bar. Unfortunately he fudged his first fixture with Masaya taking the game 6-1. Mick and Christian took centre stage for Freedom Bar beating Ingo and Jason respectively at Tropical Sands. They also made sure of a point in their doubles contributing to a superb victory for Freedom, 2-5.

ewis Hamilton may have romped to the drivers championship two races early, but the fate of the constructors title remains in the balance with just two rounds of the 2018 Formula One season remaining. Hamilton’s charge towards an insurmountable 64-point lead over Sebastian Vettel belied the closely contested nature of the year, with momentum swinging unpredictably between Ferrari and Mercedes. Ferrari held a small but decisive pace advantage for much of the first half of the season, but a string of botched car upgrades between August and October put the team into a dramatic tailspin. Between the Belgian and Japanese grands prix it fell from just 15 points off Mercedes’s lead to a whopping 78 points, putting the German marque within touching distance of a fifth successive world title. However, a complete aerodynamic rollback at the United States Grand Prix resuscitated the ailing Ferrari car, so much so that Kimi Raikkonen was able to win his first race in more than five years. Vettel’s campaign was unsalvageable, but the Scuderia had given itself a shot at redemption. The gap shrunk to 66 points in the USA, and another strong performance in Mexico, where Ferrari held a sizable advantage over Mercedes despite being bested by

Red Bull Racing, reduced the difference to 55 points. Mercedes remains in the box seat – a team can score a maximum of 43 points per weekend, meaning Ferrari must outscore Mercedes by at least 13 points in Brazil to take the title to the final round in Abu Dhabi – but with the balance of performance shifting significantly away from the Silver Arrows in the past two races, the Italian team will approach the final month of the season with an all-to-play-for attitude. “That’s what my team deserves and that’s what all the guys at home in Maranello deserve,” Vettel said after finishing a strong second in Mexico. “We have the possibility to show once again what we can do. Obviously we race for the team, and as long we keep on catching, that’s good.” Ferrari is infamously quick

to swing the axe in response to underperformance, but a positive end to the season could be enough to keep it on course to build on its largely successful 2018 car. “I think we shouldn’t neglect the fact that we had a very strong package, we were able to win races,” Vettel said. “I think still it’s been a good year for us as a team.” Aiding Ferrari’s quest is that Mercedes has endured two difficult races in Austin and Mexico City, where severe tyre wear cruelled both weekends for Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas. So bad were the team’s problems in Mexico that Hamilton finished almost 80 seconds off the pace and Bottas was a lap down on race winner Max Verstappen. “I have no explanation,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff conceded in Mexico. “I don’t think we’ve had one single lap

where we actually switch the tyres on.” But Mercedes won’t go down without a fight, and paired with a motivated Lewis Hamilton, whose focus has shifted to cementing his place in the sport’s record books as an all-time great, the Silver Arrows will remain a force to be reckoned with in Brazil on Sunday. “I still have work to do,” Hamilton said after claiming the drivers title in Mexico. “I’ve still got to get back to the factory and rally the troops… to figure out how we can come back and win these next races. “We still have the constructors championship to win, which I know will mean even more to all the guys back at the factory.” Don’t forget to listen to Live89.5 each and every Saturday at 9am and 5pm for the Box of Neutrals radio show.

FOR THE LOVE OF IT!

Dope surfer drops 30 kilos for his passion of wakeboarding

Main photo: Oliver waits to drop-in for his wakeboard ride. Inset: Oliver with wife Amita and dog Nami. Photos: Supplied

H

i, Hayden here from Surf Training Secrets. I’d like to introduce you to Oliver. Oliver is married to his beautiful wife Amita and they have a dog named Nami. First, Oliver has a message for Amita. “Thank you for supporting me through thick and thin.” OK, Oliver has always been thick (as he puts it), and has never proclaimed to have been shooting for thin. But he has always dreamed of being athletic. “Amita, you stood by me. Thank you,” says Oliver. But the messages don’t end there, Oliver also has one for Nami. “One of my best mates who also stood by me through feasting and fasting.” Nami is 30 kilograms. A big boy, but Oliver lost the weight of Nami off his body! Now he no longer has to wonder why they both used to walk around with their tongues hanging out. Believe it or not, Oliver actually used to go wakeboarding at 125kg and always wonders why it was such an effort. He used to cruise to the beach and dream about surfing. The problem was, it was a challenge for him to just squeeze out of his car. At that time, life for Oliver was a bitch. Oliver admits that he’s always

been chubby, yet after moving to Thailand, the pounds piled on. “I was like a massive Sumo wrestler, but obviously without the nappy they wear. I was fat, unfit and miserable. Eventually I manned up and got my mind, body and spirit back on track. ‘Quick results’ suck – they never last Oliver explained to me that he’s done all sorts of diets over the past 20 years; shakes, pills, extreme things like not eating for 24 hours, then binge feasts. “You name it; they all promised quick results, but I got ripped on all of them. Not like, ‘six- pack’ ripped, I’m talking ripped off, lower confidence, demotivated, and to make it worse, typically fatter. “Talk about being in a bad place!” he said. Surfing body, why now? “My uncle passed away last year from a stroke and it shocked the hell out of me, I was scared like a little boy,” explains Oliver. “That, combined with the fact that my body was in constant pain; lower back, knees, groin, hips… and I could no longer enjoy my passion for wakeboarding. “I wasn’t feeling good any more. I decided to change all that, for my life and also for my wife,” he added. What did you do? “I started to change my diet with health and also started performance

coaching with you at RPM Health Club. “Eating tasty, healthy food helped a lot in losing weight effortlessly. Step two was understanding my mind and body, and you helped me establish a weekly program encompassing healthy rituals that we constantly fine-tuned on a weekly basis. “It was not about exercise at all, that part came way later,” Oliver said. “The third step was to re-align my body, so I started yoga and pilates with a private instructor. Oh my God that was painful… like… I cried, painful!… So glad I did it though, I now understand that posture is important. You teach that physical, mental and emotional awareness and alignment are the base of all health, performance and happiness,” he added.

yourself with goodness rather than crap. I personally don’t use the word ‘sacrifice’ and prefer the word ‘choice’ instead. For example, in the long-term you will feel better to choose a fresh young coconut every day, rather than a pancake or ice cream. “The mind games are tough, 90% is the mind. The old thoughts and behaviours, your own mind trying to beat yourself up all the time. That’s why mindful practices are vital and why mediation is important. “Temptations are everywhere, and available almost 24/7. Also, friends who want to lead you astray and want to hang out with you and do the same old – same old; that can be challenging too. You need to make serious choices and stay focused for the greater good,” says Oliver.

How long have you been busy? “I started after my birthday at the end of March. In six months I have lost more than the equivalent weight of my dog (30kg). It was not easy and going it alone would have been near impossible. Self commitment and a good coach help tremendously. “I now see a big light at the end of the tunnel and can start to train a little harder to become more athletic for wakeboarding and surfing. “My goal is to be lean and athletic by Christmas.”

What is your routine? “Well I can’t tell you all my secrets,” said Oliver with a laugh, “but major points are; – Sleep early and well, in a dark room for at least eight – nine hours – Move or exercise for 60-90 mins daily – Meditate, a bit challenging in the beginning, but it helps with mind-body recovery – Be consistent – mind-set is crucial – Learn to listen and respect your body – a coach comes in very handy!”

What is the hard part of making sacrifices? You teach that it’s not about sacrifice, it’s about focusing on what you truly want and learning to treat

What is the best part? “Compliments! Yet it’s true. When I was overweight, it wasn’t just my physical well-being that was poor,

I had low self esteem, I was shy, emotions went up and down. Now people come up to me and tell me I am a different guy – and I am. “I look much better when I ride – and feel so light! Oh my God, wakeboarding is so much more fun now,” says Oliver. “Shopping for smaller size clothes is one of the best ways to lift the spirit and gives an extra boost to hit the gym.
