consortium of 25 investors, driven by key people from prominent Phuket business families, are spending B100 million to design a public transportation system for Phuket. The group have already contracted a feasibility study into the mass-transit system, which will include a bus network, and say they hope to see it under
development as early as next year. Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan was the guest of honour for the announcement at the Pearl Hotel on Wednesday night (Nov 8), which also revealed that the consortium will be collaborating with the government as a public-private infrastructure development alliance. The investors, under the banner of the Phuket City Development Co Ltd (PKCD) corporation, will draw up a 20-year development plan to improve
Phuket’s transport infrastructure, which for decades primarily has been under the control of private tuk-tuk, taxi and limousine cartels. Top priority has been given to delivering a mass-transit bus network to operate in concert with the light-rail project that is still awaiting approval by the Cabinet. Phuket has been waiting more than 10 years for the planned lightrail system which – when, or if – it arrives will provide public transport

Park officials look to land in ongoing search for missing Russian > page 4
Bus network ‘within five years’ Continued from page 1 ...“We are working on a 20year master plan with smart urban planning,” he said. “Our concept is Innovation, Green Infrastructure and Green Mobility for Sustainable Phuket. We want to develop our public transit to be comparable with Singapore. “Our projects will focus on development related to the growth of tourism, especially transportation. We are still in our first stage, and the B100mn investment (used to form PKCD) is being used to hire a project consultant and will be used to design public mass transit for five main lines (routes) and other areas,” Mr Kan said. “For our next phase, we will invest in low-floor transit buses, transit repair depots, digital advertising, traffic direction and so on. For this stage we will need at least B400mn,” he added.
The PKCD group has already commissioned a feasibility study funded with their own B100 million and expect to have the bus network operating within five years. The “smart buses” are to be low-emission, air-conditioned, offer free WiFi and be able to be tracked by GPS. “I promise within five
years, we’ll see these buses running” Mr Kan said. “The Prince of Songkla Universit y and Mahidol University are conducting a
survey for us to figure out why people have stopped using public buses,” explained fellow PKCD cofounder Montavee Hongsyok
of Phuket’s Anuphas Group. The new bus network will not displace the 36 pink Po Thong buses provided by the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO), he added. “We will still use Po Thong on some routes as they have become an icon of Phuket,” he said After developing a local bus network along Phuket’s main commuter routes, PKCD will submit a tender for building Phuket’s light-rail system, but only from the Heroines Monument to Chalong Circle, via Phuket Town, Mr Kan said. “This project will need at least B20 billion.” Mr Kan explained, adding that to fund the mega-project, PKCD will be floated on the Stock Exchange of Thailand to draw investment from the public. Present for the launch on Wednesday was also PKCD
co-founder Suradech Taweesaengsakulthai, who is also the CEO of Khon Kaen City Dvelopment Co Ltd, which initiated the same form of public-private development corporation in that northeastern city. “My province did not have enough money to improve our infrastructure, so we businessmen have to do it,” he explained. “I am glad that I am part of the development of Phuket, and now Phuket and Khon Kaen are moving forward together to increase market capital,” he added. Gov Chokdee voiced his support. “PKCD is good for Phuket,” he said. “The company belongs to Phuketians and no one should know more about this island than local people and what needs to be done to their city. We are truly support this enterprise,” he added.

n Australian tourist was taken for treatment at Bangkok Hospital Phuket last week after he was attacked by an elephant on Mai Khao Beach. The elephant, named Namwan, is the same elephant seized at the “Mai Khao Mart”, near Mai Khao Plaza at the northern end of Phuket, on Aug 3 following a tip-off from undercover police that he was being used by touts to charge tourists money to have their photo taken with the iconic animal. In addition, Col Prawit Sutthirueangarun Chief of Tha Chatchai Police Station told The Phuket News last Friday (Nov 4) that he believed the incident should never have happened as Namwan should have been moved from the island after it was seized by officials on Aug 3. Col Prawit said, “Australian tourist Chan Young Yun, 62, was walking at Mai Khao Plaza at 9:15am on October 31 when he saw an elephant

He went close to the elephant as he wanted to take a photo. “Suddenly the elephant used its trunk to hit Mr Chan many times which is what caused his injuries. He was taken to hospital, and at 5pm on Nov 1 one of Mr Chan’s relatives came to the police station to make a record about the incident,” he said. “We found out from his relative that Mr Chan sustained injuries to both sides of his rib
cage and also his back. He also has blood in his right lung so he is being closely monitored by doctors at Bangkok Hospital Phuket,” he added. Col Prawit went on to say that he believes that Namwan’s mahout had left him chained to the tree as a tourist attraction. However, he added that after being seized by the livestock department on Aug 3 the elephant should not have even been on the island. After Namwan was seized by the Phuket Livestock Office

Mr Prathaiyuth explained that the waves in the area where Mr Agapov was recovered from the water were not overly dangerous. “But our lifeguards are not allowed to patrol that area near the southern end of the beach because a hotel there prefers to have their own staff to look after swimmers’ safety there,” he said. If he had been transferred like he was supposed to have been then this incident would never have happened,” he said.
A MAN ARRESTED FOR attacking a Russian woman on Bangla Rd, Patong, on Oct 31 has confessed to robbing the woman, but has denied that he attempted to rape her, police have told The Phuket News. Patong Police arrested motorbike taxi driver Samlee Seangchan, 27, last Friday (Nov 4) after tracking him down via CCTV, explained Patong Police Deputy Chief Lt Col Somsak Thongkleng. Col Somak said that he received a report on the previous Tuesday (Nov 1) that a Russian woman, 30 years old, had gone to celebrate Halloween on Bangla Rd on Oct 31. “At about 2am she hired
Samlee to take her back to her hotel in Chalong, but Samlee pulled over along the way and allegedly tried to embrace her,” Col Somak said. “The Russian woman cried out for help, but Samlee reportedly pushed his hand over her face,” he said. Samlee stole B7,000 and US$200 from the Russian woman, then fled on his motorbike, Col Somsak said. “Police tracked him down by CCTV. During questioning, Samlee confessed to the charge of robbery, but denied he made any attempt to rape the woman,” he said. Police are continuing their investigation. Darawan Naknakhon

e s c u e t e a m s a nd Mar ine Police from Phang Nga on Wednesday (Nov 9) were continuing their search for missing Russian national Alexey Stashkov, who disappeared after going for a swim from a friend’s yacht moored off the Similan Islands last week. Mr Stashkov disappeared on Oct 30 after he was caught in a fast-moving current while swimming from a friend’s yacht moored close to a small island, about one mile east of Koh Payan. Attempts by Mikhail Kolmogorov, his friend and the captain of the yacht Revolution, failed to recover him. “We have not found Mr Stashkov yet, but rescue teams, Marine Police from Phang Nga and Similan National Park officials have joined forces to search for him,” Lt Kwanjai Kerwan, the Royal Thai Navy Third Area Command public liaison in Phuket, told The Phuket News on Wednesday. The search is being car-
Rescue teams and marine police search for the missing man. Photo: Similan National Park ried out on water and land, Lt Kwanjai said, with search teams landing on small islands in the area to check whether Mr Stashkov made it ashore alive. “Navy officers are using navy vessel Tor229 only to assist with the search. We are not using a helicopter. The boat can cover 20 nautical miles a day and rescue navy officials use rubber dinghys to get to the beaches,” he explained. The search on land is as important as the search on water, Lt Kwanjai noted. “There are many small islands in the search area. Park officers regularly patrol
their own islands, which they know well, and they are now specifically searching for Mr Stashkov and checking with indigenous people in the area,” he said. “If we find him, we will let the public know immediately,” Lt Kwanjai added. Mr Kolmogorov told The Phuket News that Revolution left Chalong Pier on the night of Oct 29 and had reached the Similan Islands by early the next morning. Mr Kolmogorov explained how he was tired after making the journey so went for a lie down. Mr Stashkov told
him that he would be going for a swim. “I was on watch during the last leg of the voyage so I went down below to rest. I was half asleep when I heard Alexey calling for help,” Mr Kolmogorov said. By the time Mr Kolmogorov had reached the deck Mr Stashkov was far from the boat and caught in a rip tide. Mr Kolmogorov untied Revolution’s dinghy and sent it afloat with the rip, hoping Mr Stashkov would be able to grab it. Mr Kolmogorov then tried to move the yacht closer to Mr
Satshkov, but was delayed as he had to cut the mooring line which had become stuck under the boat. “Upon reaching the dinghy I discovered that Alexey was not inside the dinghy or anywhere in the vicinity,” he said. Stressed and stunned, Mr Kolmogorov made contact with some friends in Phuket and also abroad to alert them about what had happened and proceeded to search for Alexey himself. “I now realise that maybe I should have also sent a Mayday signal by radio,” he added. Mr Kolmogorov went on to say that the area where Mr Stashkov disappeared is absolutely desolate and that no tour boats went to the area, he also said that the main island of the Similan group was too far away for help to come quickly so he continued to search by himself. “After two days of searching I stopped my efforts and proceeded to the central island in the Similan Archipelago. But it wasn’t until Nov 1 that a navy vessel arrived and I was questioned by officials,” Mr Kolmogorov concluded.

‘Sorry for the inconvenience’ Airport calls for ‘understanding’ as renovations cause delays The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th
O
fficials at Phuket International Airport this week repeated their call for “understanding” as renovations of the old Domestic Terminal cause major upheavals for passengers arriving and departing the island via the airport. “We apologise for any inconvenience during the renovations,” Airports of Thailand (AoT) Phuket noted in a release issued on Tuesday (Nov 8). “We are working to improve the building to accommodate the increasing number of passengers at the airport for the high season,” it added. “We have officers posted to direct travellers to the correct areas where they need to go and we have signs posted through the terminal. We have also added extra seating in a new waiting area to make it more convenient for passengers needing to wait for their flights. “We recommend passengers arrive at least two hours before they need to check in (sic) for their flights,” the notice advised. “We are also taking steps to alleviate traffic jams at the entrance to the terminal,” the notice added. The repeated call for “understanding” follows a slew of complaints from people using the airport since the renovations began last Tuesday (Nov 1). “I just dropped and picked up guests at the domestic terminal, I understand that they have to work but the person or the AoT who organised the temporary domestic terminal is a shame for Thailand and Phuket and we are just at the start of the season,” one local expat reported to The Phuket News.
@thephuketnews
The notice issued on Tuesday (Nov 8) advised that drivers can circle through the ‘drop-off zone’ every 15 minutes. Photo: The Phuket News “I invite you to go to have a look... it is unbelievable to be able to make such a mess. There are already taxis who do not want to pick up guests as there is a unnecessary procedure at the International Terminal, but the mess at the domestic one is tops. “I don’t know how we will find our guests when more arrive in the coming weeks,” he said. The official AoT Phuket Facebook page on Tuesday morning advised people arriving at the airport to access the new International Terminal to park near “Door 5” on Level 1 or “Door 3” on Level 3 of the five-story car park. People looking to drop off passengers at the Domestic Terminal, however, were told that vehicles could circle through the drop-off zone every 15 minutes. Airport officials on Tuesday also confirmed they were now operating a shuttle bus service from the facility’s car park in front of the new International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal. An airport representative
who declined to be named said, “People who park their cars in the car park can get to the Domestic Terminal by taking the shuttle bus that we provide. The bus leaves every five minutes all day long. They start running when the first flight arrives and the last bus will be after the last flight lands,” he said. The representative advised against travellers walking between the two terminals. “They can but it is not recommended, it is better to take the shuttle bus provided,” he said. In response to reports that taxi drivers will not take passengers from one terminal to the other, the representative told The Phuket News, “We have no knowledge of this, but most taxi drivers should know where they need to drop off their passengers.” The representative was also asked whether it was correct that some regular flights are being moved to the X-Terminal, he said that is not correct. “There are no flights at the X-Terminal. The X-Terminal has not been in use since the opening of the International
Terminal,” he said. “The X-Terminal was previously used for charter flights, but since the International Terminal opened we have stopped using it. “Right now there are only two terminals in use, the domestic and international terminals,” he added. The X-Terminal, built at a cost of B151 million, opened
only two years ago with a capability of clearing 1,000 passengers an hour. With regards to a report that their was a water leak in the International Terminal last week, the representative said there was a leak but that it was fixed shortly after and that details were being collected so that an insurance claim could be made.
“The pipe burst because the job the contractor did was not up to standard, but it is now rectified. The incident had no affect on flights,” the representative said. The notice issued on Tuesday pointed out that AoT had already notified the public through press releases and through social media, in line with Airport Director Monrudee Gettuphan announcing the renovations at a special press conference on Oct 29. However, instead of the 330 days allocated for the contractors to complete their work, the notice on Tuesday explained that the project will take 406 days – 256 days to complete Phase 1 (to close Levels 1, 2 and 3 on the south side of the terminal for renovations); and 150 days to complete Phase 2 (to close Levels 1, 2 and 3 on the north side to improve all airport systems). Meanwhile, AoT has also called for people to abide by the annual ban on all fire lanterns anywhere near the airport during the Loy Krathong festival, which will be held on Monday (Nov 14).

Five homes in Mai Khao burn FIVE HOMES IN MAI Khao were completely destroyed last week by a fire that police were told was caused by a lit candle falling onto a bed. Tha Chatchai Police Capt Thanom Thongpan was notified by a local resident at 10pm on Nov 3 that a fire had broken out at some homes located near the mangrove forest in Soi Bangdook, Baan Makprok in Mai Khao. Police, officials from the Mai Khao Tambon Administration Office (OrBorTor) and Kusoldharm rescue workers arrived at the location with five fire trucks to find a row of homes completely
consumed by fire. Capt Thanom explained, “The fire started and spread rapidly. Some homes were completely gutted. Fire officials had a hard time controlling the fire because the area is pretty narrow and difficult to get to. In addition, each of the gutted homes was built from combustible materials. “It took officials more than two hours to put the fire out and five homes have been completely destroyed. Luckily there were no reports of death or injury,” he said. “We are investigating this incident and forensic police are examining the area,” Capt Thanom added. Eakkapop Thongtub

Floating jetty blamed for damage to coral Ekkapop Thongtub editor@classactmedia.co.th
L
ocal marine conservation officials are investigating whether a floating jetty at Kamala Beach will have to be removed for possibly causing damage to more than 600 square metres of corals. The jetty is more than 190 metres long, and at low tide the floating structure rests on the seabed immediately offshore, explained Marine Ecology Chief Dr Nalinee Thongtam of the “Sixth Marine and Coastal Resource Administration” office Phuket. “We surveyed the area and learned that the jetty is more than 190 metres long and when the tide is low the jetty sinks to the bottom on top of the coral,” Dr Nalinee said. “At high tide, the anchor points that hold the jetty in place by rope may move when there are strong waves, and any movement of these anchor points will damage coral,” she added. “We estimate the damage under the jetty to cover about 600sqm, which is a lot of damage. Even though some

The “owner of the jetty” Dr Nalinee referred to is a local hotel which requested – and received – permission to install the floating jetty. The hotel also paid for the jetty and hired a contractor to install it, as it would like its
guests to use it to access the hotel, Phuket Marine Office Director Surat Sirisaiyad told The Phuket News. “The hotel requested to have a jetty there and we issued them a permit,” he said. “But we also told them to be aware of other regulations, such as marine environment and wildlife preservation laws. We told hotel management last month to stop installing due to environmental risk, but they want to wait for DMCR officials to inspect the area
first,” Mr Surat said. “Today (Nov 2) we held a meeting with officials to discuss this issue, and I will now issue them a notice to remove the structure,” he added. Regardless, Suchart Rattanariangsri, Director of the DMCR’s Marine Resource Conservation Division at the Sixth Marine Coastal Resources Administration Office (Phuket), is adamant his office will file charges against the hotel – despite the Phuket Marine Office issuing a permit.

T
he news this week that prominent Phuket families, likely frustrated by decades of inaction by countless administration’s inability – or unwillingness – to develop public transport on the island, are moving ahead to achieve that goal themselves bodes well for the future of Phuket. This development comes on an island where nearly every form of so-called “public transport” is privately owned, from the tuk-tuk and taxi mafia and their incredible “fees” for joining tuk-tuk ranks operated by the key leaders to the airport limousine “co-operatives” who pay exorbitant “concession fees” to Airports of Thailand (AoT) for the right to pick up passengers at Phuket Airport. The airport buses are privately operated, as are the blue-and-white songthaew that work from the market in Phuket Town and even the
Road to confusion Re: Confusion on Patong’s ‘Road to Kindness’ This is just so typical of Thai officials... spending hours, days and months pointing fingers in every direction – ultimately coming up with no solution, and leaving one of Thailand’s busiest tourist hubs completely confusing to visitors. Make it simple... call the beach road “Patong Beach Road”; Call Rat-U-Thit road “Patong Central Avenue” (since it runs through the middle of town), and call the new disaster road “Patong Boulevard”, since it is supposed to be the only 2-way street in and out of Patong. Forget these fluffy names with words like “benevolence” or “kindness” or “Prestige Rd”, as Patong has none of that. Ed Sanders ...................................................

motorbike taxi outfits. Despite the “fees” they collect and the endless complaints against them, which even inspired a crackdown by the military two years ago, they are all legally endorsed by the Phuket Land Transport Office. The only exceptions are the pink Po Thong buses operated by the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO), and even they do not dare extend their routes into other transport moguls’ turf. Whether people agree with the investment model or not, private business gets things done for one primary reason – they exist to make money. Yet, if such corporations bring public benefit to where the government has failed for so long, it must be heralded as good news. Beautiful news in this regard is that the primary PKCD investors intend to float the company on the Stock
Exchange of Thailand, which in essence throws down the gauntlet to cynics who would like to call the PKCD nothing more than just another “cartel”. With an IPO, the public themselves can literally invest in Phuket, and claim their share of the profits made. How simple is that? Without doubt many challenges lie ahead. The introduction of genuine public transport will ruffle the feathers of many of those profiting from Phuket’s lucrative transport industry. How the PKCD will manage these issues remains to be seen, but Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan was correct in pointing out that no one knows the issues at hand or the mentality of the existing “public transport providers” better than these key Phuket people. If anyone can do it, they can – and they have the motivation to achieve it.

Airport nightmare
Re: Phuket Airport calls for ‘understanding’ as renovations cause major delays Nice to read that The Phuket News is the only newspaper who is reporting the real story. How is it possible to do this job in the high season? Why did they not work 24h/day and start last year after Songkran! Planning is not the AOT specialty, I was lucky this week to meet a friendly and polite
airport officer who gave us time to find our guests and was understanding the mess. The private security staff is horribly unfriendly, unprofessional, wearing their sunglasses while the rain is pouring and not polite at all. Even dropping off guests is a nightmare, the person who organised this mess should be fired, in Europe this would be the case. Eric Dekegel ................................................. What’s really wrong with Phuket is not the beach clubs, or Thai laws, or the lack of enforcement of Thai laws, or a local news outlet that gives a free plug to a local business. It’s the cohort of whiney, bitchy, disgruntled, negative, moralising know-it-all expats who apparently have absolutely nothing better to do than to sit around all day pontificating about something as inconsequential as a bloody business announcement... Greed beats green
Re: Phuket beach floating jetty investigated for causing coral damage The environment is of no concern to anyone in politics in Phuket. That’s why there are 4,000 new condos coming online in Kamala. This at a time where there is an enormous property bubble. Water, sewage and trash are completely overwhelming already. In any Western country there would be a building moratorium. Not in Phuket! Just more building and complete disregard for the environment. Pinot

Andy Hall ‘fears for his safety’ Activist leaves Thailand amidst legal problems and harassment BANGKOK Thomson Reuters Foundation
P
rominent British rights activist Andy Hall left Thailand early on Monday (Nov 7), saying he feared for his safety amidst legal problems and growing harassment from companies that have been “irrational, vindictive and aggressive”. Mr Hall, who has worked on the rights of migrant workers in Thailand for 11 years, has recently faced defamation lawsuits by companies he has accused of labour violations. “The situation is not good right now,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone on Sunday (Nov 6) before his flight, speaking from Mahachai, a town near Bangkok and the centre of Thailand’s seafood processing industry. “It’s rapidly deteriorating. It doesn’t feel safe. There are people who are intent on wearing me down. I’ve worked with so many companies in Thailand, and it’s rare to have a company that is so irrational
@thephuketnews
Andy Hall won an acquittal from the Supreme Court last week on one charge of defamation, but says he can no longer deal with the ‘corrupt mafia system’ in Thailand. Photo: Bangkok Post file photo and so vindictive. It’s enough to wear anyone down.” In September, Mr Hall was handed a suspended three-year jail term and fined B150,000 ($4,300) for criminally defaming Natural Fruit Company, a pineapple wholesaler that supplies the European Union. Rights groups called the verdict an alarming precedent in the fight against labour exploitation. Emboldened by the ruling, a chicken farmer who lost his
EU contracts and had to shut down his 1.6 million-chicken operation after Mr Hall exposed alleged labour violations on one of his three farms, said he planned to pursue his own defamation case and has hired the Natural Fruit lawyer. Supported by Mr Hall, the chicken farm workers had sued the farmer in September, alleging forced overtime, unlawful salary deductions, confiscation of their passports and limited freedom of movement.
They demanded $1.3 million (B45.3mn) in compensation and civil damages. The chicken farmer countered with defamation lawsuits against 14 of the migrant workers, Mr Hall said, adding that he didn’t know if suits had been filed against him or the non-governmental organisation he co-founded, the Migrant Worker Rights Network. T hailand, one of the world’s key food exporters, employs an estimated 3 million
migrant workers, mostly from Myanmar. Many migrants face labour violations, such as unpaid wages, confiscated travel documents and limited freedom of movement. Mr Hall’s legal problems began after he conducted research for Helsinki-based Finnwatch for a 2013 report called “Cheap has a high price”. A company in the report, Natural Fruit, filed four defamation cases against Mr Hall. One case related to an interview Mr Hall gave to Al Jazeera in Myanmar in 2013 about the legal fallout of the Finnwatch report. A court in Bangkok dismissed the charges, but Thailand’s attorney general and Natural Fruit appealed. The Supreme Court last Thursday (Nov 3) rejected that appeal. The verdict had originally been scheduled to be read on Nov 25, but Mr Hall said he requested the court to move the date forward because of his increasingly precarious situation. “It’s time for the good companies, the good actors, to
speak to these people. I work with a lot of good companies ... I fear for my safety because of the unstable situation. I don’t want to be here another three weeks,” he said. “My work is not productive at the moment. It’s like walking on broken glass. I don’t feel secure to be working here. Why would you want to put yourself in this situation where you’re just being worn down and stuck in the court system?” Because of the cases, Mr Hall has had his travel restricted since June 2014 and his passport confiscated by two different courts. He was unable to live outside Thailand and had to ask the court’s permission each time he left the country. “You’re at the whim of this corrupt, mafia system, and you can’t get out of it... I’ve done everything I’m legally obliged to do, and now is the time to step away and see if this will get better.” Mr Hall left on a Parisbound flight that departed from Bangkok shortly after midnight on Monday. He has not specified a return date.

TV host fired after assault
Attack video goes viral, GMM terminates ‘Nott’s’ contract BANGKOK Bangkok Post
G
MMTV has terminated its contract with Akanat “Nott” Ariyaritwikul, a TV program host on the network, after a video clip showing the driver of a Mini sedan punching a motorcyclist went viral on Sunday (Nov 6). Mr Akanat, 28, became notorious on social media overnight. The video clip showed him punching a motorcyclist and forcing the man to perform a krab to his car. He accused the motorcyclist of scratching his vehicle with his bike. The incident occurred last Friday (Nov 4). The two men later went to police and both initially agreed not to file a complaint. However, the video clip of the incident stirred public criticism. Mr Akanat’s demand that the youth “krab rot ku” (kneel and wai before my car) became the most popular hashtag on Twitter. GMMTV responded by is-

Photo: screengrab suing a statement on Monday (Nov 7) saying the company regretted Mr Akanat’s behaviour. As a TV host and actor he should behave in a way that sets an example for youth. The company had considered the incident and decided to cancel his employment contract with immediate effect. It said it could not condone Mr Akanat’s inappropriate behaviour. In addition to his contract
being cancelled, Mr Akanat will also be required to return the award for being a role model he received in September. The motorcyclist, identified as Kittisak Singto, 25, told a police officer called to the scene last Friday that his bike was hit by a taxi. He was knocked off balance and crashed into the Mini Countryman. He had tried unsuccessfully
to catch up to the taxi, then returned to the scene of the incident. Once there, he had been grabbed, punched several times and ordered to “krab” the car, which he did not do. Both men went to Yannawa Police Station last Friday to give their statement. Each claimed to be the damaged party, but they agreed not to take the matter any further. However, Mr Kittisak, his
mother and his sister, went to the police station on Monday to file a report about the physical assault. Suthira Hongthong, Mr Kittisak’s mother, said she had earlier not wanted her son to file a report as it seemed he received only some bruising. But at Lertsin Hospital they learned that his nose was broken too. They were unable to contact Mr Akanat. Mrs Suthira later saw the video clip and felt that Mr Akanat’s actions were unacceptable, so she took her son to the police station to file a complaint. Mr Akanat and his lawyer on Monday night went to the police station, and were there for about three hours. The lawyer, Adul Tinapong, said his client reported a hitand-run accident that left his car damaged. He said Mr Akanat had punched the motorcyclist in an act of self-defence. Early on Tuesday morning (Nov 8), on the Facebook page Ruang Lao Chao Nee live coverage, Mr Akanat said that he had been able to talk to
Mr Kittisak’s mother over the phone and was willing to pay some of the cost of medical treatment. Regarding to the “krab rot ku” comment, Mr Akanat said he was worried that Mr Kittisak would run away, and he was angry and wanted to protect his “dream” car. He asked the public not to judge him by a video clip lasting just over a minute. Mr Akanat later on Tuesday morning cancelled a scheduled 2pm press conference. Shortly afterwards, GMMTV issued a statement announcing it had terminated Mr Akanat’s employment. Thai PBS also suspended the airing of the program “Thailand Science Challenge” which Mr Akanat hosts. Maj Gen Songpol Watthanachai, a deputy police spokesman, said that Yannawa police had been instructed to speed up their handling of the matter, which must be split into two cases – the hit-and-run case, and a physical assault case in which Mr Kittisak had clearly been seriously hurt.

‘Mistress hunters’ on a mission Elite team of specialists putting an end to China’s extra-marital affairs CHINA
D
on’t get mad, get your opponent to surrender voluntarily: when Mrs Wang discovered her husband had been cheating on her for several years, she called in an elite team of Chinese “mistress hunters”. Rather than seek a divorce – which could have hit her social and financial standing – she hired a specialist to earn the other woman’s trust, and then persuaded her to end the extra-marital relationship. It was a long-standing affair, but once the mistress hunters were called in, it was over within two months. Wang said she paid between 400,000 and 500,000 yuan (B1.74mn-B2.61mn) for the service. “I think it was worth it, I’m satisfied,” she added. So much so, she is now thinking of becoming a hunter herself. “That way I can help women protect their families and their rights,” she explained. The company Wang used, Weiqing – or “protector of feelings” – has 59 offices across the
Shu Xin founded the company Weiqing – or ‘protector of feelings’ – to help persuade mistresses to end extra-marital relationships. Photo: Johannes Eisele/AFP country, and offers free legal advice and lectures. Its founder Shu Xin said he has 300 agents at his command. “My goal is to prevent divorces,” he said at his upmarket Beijing headquarters. “Every year we save some 5,000 couples.” The mistress hunters are mostly women and are all psychology, sociology or law graduates. They spend three years learning the ropes before being sent out into the field, where
they pose as neighbours, cleaners or even babysitters. Ming Li, 47, has been doing the job for three years. “I’m older than these mistresses, in general, so they listen to me,” she said. “If the mistress goes to a park, to the supermarket or to work, I’ll happen to meet her. And even if she is a stayat-home sort of person, I can claim I’ve got a leak in my apartment and ask for her help,” she said. “We always find a way to initiate contact.
“One time, I pretended to be a fortune teller, and the mistress asked me to tell hers. Obviously, I already knew all about her from the wife, so it was easy to leave her dumbfounded and exhort her to leave the husband. It was one of our most quickly resolved cases.” Chinese divorce rates have surged from 1.59 per 1,000 people in 2007 to 2.67 in 2014, according to the most recently available civil affairs ministry figures – far higher than in Europe, with France at 1.9 and
Italy at just 0.9. In Beijing, official statistics show 73,000 couples divorced in 2015 – almost three times the number nine years previously. “The reasons? The liberalisation of morals, tensions related to differences between the husband’s and the wife’s income, incompatible personalities,” said Zhu Ruilei, a divorce attorney at Beijing-based law firm Yingke. “But also the desire to pursue personal dreams is stronger than it used it be.” “Today being unfaithful has become easy, especially with the internet,” said Pan Xingshi, who runs an online advice company, referring to the popularity of Tantan, China’s equivalent of Tinder. But mistresses are still poorly regarded in the country, where having children out of wedlock remains socially taboo. They are known as “xiaosan”, a derogatory term meaning a third person of lower rank than a wife. Sometimes they fall victim to violent vigilantism. In June, a video went viral showing a naked girl being attacked by a group of women. She was suspected of being the
mistress of one of the women’s husbands. “Mistresses are global. But specifically in China they are kept women: the husbands, often rich, pay for luxury apartments, cars and luxury products,” explained Weiqing chief Shu, a former journalist. “Some women do not want to divorce out of fear of getting into financial difficulty. They just want to get rid of the mistress. That’s where we come in,” said Shu. It is an expensive process: the mistress hunters often have to rent similarly pricey accommodation and buy high-end jewellery and clothes as they try to forge a friendship with their targets. “We are paid a lot. But we also risk losing a lot too, because if we fail then we repay the entire amount,” explained Shu, who says his mistress hunters sent 8,552 women packing in 2014, some husbands have more than one. Under Chinese law the activities of Weiqing and similar firms are not illegal, said Zhu, the lawyer, adding that they “serve a purpose”. AFP
Japanese firms wage war on ‘smell harassment’ JAPAN G O T S T I N K Y WO R K colleagues? Japan has a seminar for that. hurting someone’s feelings: “smell care” seminars. Japanese media have picked up the scent on this anti-odour battle, reporting that about 40 employees from mobile giant SoftBank recently attended a session on what causes body odour and how to avoid it. Smell harassment joins a long list of other office complaints including “alcohol harassment” (forcing a colleague to drink) and karaoke harassment (forcing someone to sing against their will).
In response to the national crisis, eyewear chain Owndays has reportedly created a list of odour regulations for staff amid concerns that poor hygiene could hit sales. T he cu lpr it s i nclude sweaty, chain-smoking salarymen, a colleague doused in perfume, and that guy who ate too much breath-destroying garlic at lunch. Mandom insists the seminars can gently teach offenders to change their ways, and create a more tolerant office. “Better understanding
the mechanism behind and nature of those smells should lead to increased tolerance,” said Mandom’s Miyuu Sato, optimistically. But the anti-odour firm is also clear on where to draw the line: bullying smelly colleagues into a shower is not the answer. “Bodily smells are not always a bad thing and they don’t always bother people,” Sato said. “Odours are a person’s unique characteristic.” AFP

Portugal’s jailhouse dogs
Canine guests check in at a Lisbon’s maximum security prison PORTUGAL
G
loria is a regular at Portugal’s most infamous prison, but it isn’t crime that keeps her coming back. The golden Barbado da Terceira is just one of the canine guests at a most unusual dog kennel run by inmates. Owner Rui Silva checked in his pet, a shaggy Portuguese breed, for a weekend stay in the maximum security jail in Lisbon. “It did not really phase me,” the 48-year-old TV broadcast technician said about leaving his pet at the Monsanto prison, where Portugal’s most notorious criminals are housed. “I asked if they took good care of the animals, they said yes. That’s what matters.” The inmates welcome the pets at the so-called Dog House in a modest reception area adorned by photos of former four-legged guests. They verify vaccination records and receive instructions from pet owners. During the stay, they oversee feeding

and bathing, walk the dogs and administer medication. “It’s a lot of responsibility,” said Ricardo, an inmate serving a sentence for drug trafficking, as a pit bull licked his hand through the fence of its pen. “What I really like is having contact with the public,” the 34-year-old former bar owner said. Giving inmates the chance to reboot relational skills and gain job experience is the
goal of this unique project in Portugal. The kennel, a white and yellow building, is located just outside the barbed-wire fence that surrounds the prison, a former military fort perched atop the highest point of Lisbon among pine and oak trees, with a panoramic view of the capital. Its 68 dog pens usually fill up during peak vacation periods in summer and at Christmas, as well as over
long weekends. Two to five prisoners work at the kennel, depending on how busy it is. They receive a monthly stipend of around 80 euros (B3,145) for their work. “It is totally different than being inside, time goes by faster,” said Ricardo, who was dressed in a red tracksuit and grey sweatshirt, as he pointed in the direction of the jail. Married and with a young daughter on the outside, he
said he was thinking of setting up his own kennel after he is released from jail at the end of the year. The prison initially began the kennel for its staff but in 2000 it opened the facility to the general public. The kennel charges 10 euros (B384) per day per dog, or just 9.50 euros if the owner brings the pet’s own food. Prison officials stress the kennel is not a business, but rather a tool to help rehabilitate prisoners and prepare them to return to society by giving them job skills. “Looking after animals develops emotional ties which the inmates then project onto other people and society in general,” Monsanto prison director Ana Cristina Carrolo Pereira Teixeira said. And many of its regular customers like Silva, who first left his Gloria at the kennel several years ago, support those goals. “It’s being part of a prison that maybe makes me want to use it even more, to help out,” he said.
But not all prisoners at Monsanto, used to house the nation’s most dangerous convicts, make the cut for kennel care. Among the roughly 160 inmates currently held is an explosives expert with the Basque separatist group ETA who was arrested in Portugal in 2010, and the killer of two young policemen in a Lisbon suburb in 2005. Those who can work at the kennel are selected from the approximately 20 prisoners who have been assigned to a less restrictive regime due to good behaviour. “We try to pick ideal people for this role and that like being here,” the kennel’s veterinarian, Pedro Miguel Canavilhas de Melo, said. Teixeira, the prison director, said she believes the inmates “are better people when they leave here in the way they relate to others because of their relationship with the animals.” “I think it calms inmates, their relationship with animals reduces aggression,” she added. Kata Group sets sights on Chinese honeymooners TOURISM Suthicha Sirirat editor@classactmedia.co.th
The suggested tour prices set out by the Tourism Ministry were handed out to Chinese tourists arriving in Phuket.
Chinese tourists handed ‘tour price list’ to deter rip-offs TOURISM MORE THAN 1,000 CHInese tourists on board 40 buses and vans returning to Phuket from tours to Krabi and Phang Nga were handed out lists of recommended tour prices last Sunday (Nov 6) to prevent rip-off agents from charging them greatly inflated prices. Of note, the advisory – written in Chinese language – informed the Chinese tourists that they should not spend more than B3,000 per person per tour. The campaign was carried out by more than 50 members of the Thai-Chinese Tourism Alliance Association Phuket office and the Thai Chinese speaking Tour Guide Club, and led by Ronnakris Cheinsangaroon and Nonphuri Phattarakunakornsakul, who each serve as the Secretary at the respective associations. The list, handed out as the tour buses and vans arrived on the island and passed through the Phuket Checkpoint at Tha Chatchai, gave example prices of tours in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga.
Examples included: • One day round trip to Phi Phi - Adult B2,000; Child B1,700 • Phang Nga - Adult B1,200; Child B1,000 • Koh Racha - Adult B1,500; Child B1,200

The brochure also aims to change negative perspectives about our tourism industry among Chinese, he said. “We want Chinese tourists to know what tours cost when they visit Thailand, and especially Phuket. They deserve a fair fare, just like everyone else,” Mr Ronnakris added. “There have been so many illegal guides selling overpriced tour packages to our tourists. We want to preserve the good tourism image of Phuket, and the Kingdom, so we set up this list of standard prices which is available to the public and freely handed out to tourists.” Eakkapop Thongtub

Thai cats need new name Jeerawat Na Thalang editor1@classactmedia.co.th
K
orat cats were first registered in the US by the Korat Cat Fanciers Association in 1965. The breed was formed of cats imported directly from Thailand by Jean L Johnson in 1959. The association established a controlled breeding program and in 1966 the Korat breed was accepted by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA), one of the largest cat associations in the world. Today the Korat breed is accepted by all popular cat associations around the world. In 1878, Wichienmaat, or Siamese cats, were imported to the US and then, in 1884 to England where the Siamese Cat Club was founded in 1901. The Siamese breed was accepted by the CFA in 1906. But variations in the Siamese breed – identifiable by their heart-shaped face, slender tail and short hair – have grown significantly. The changes prompted some breeders to call for the registration of a new breed named “Thai”. These breeders believe that the cats should be named after their country of origin, Thailand, in the same way that Siamese cats were named after Siam. Timba, a local association that registers Thai cat breeds, is campaigning to have the cats called Wichienmaat. Timba argues that this is how they are named in the Tamra Maew, an ancient
A Thai Si Sawat (Korat) cat. Photo: Chumporn Sangvilert collection of poems describing the characteristics of Thai cats, dating back to 1350 and predating all other cat associations. The rare Khao Manee, or diamondeye, cats are also mentioned in the Tamra Maew. They were first registered in the US with The International Cat Association in 2009. Colleen Freymouth imported the first Khao Manee from Thailand in 1999. However, it was not until 2012 that Khao Manee was accepted as a full championship breed, meaning they became eligible to compete with all the other recognised cat breeds in Tica shows. Other unique Thai breeds identified by Timba include: Konja: a solid black cat with silky fur and greenish-yellow eyes. Konja moves with agility and grace, and has
lion-like legs. Suphalak: known for its coppercoloured fur, is not registered by any Western association. Timba plans to register Suphalak with Tica in 2017. Once registered, the preservation and breeding of Suphalak will be managed and controlled by Thai breeders. Thai-Burmese: coat of a colour we associate with European sable. Strikingly similar to the Suphalak, these cats are a rich brown but display a darker shadow on the face, ears, paws and tail. Eye colour ranges from gold to light green and the coat colour ranges from milk chocolate to dark chocolate. Wichienmaat: the Seal (dark brown) point Wichienmaat is one of the most popular colours today, but this colour was exclusively reserved for the royal family pre-dating the reign of King Chulalongkorn, or Rama V (5th King) (1868 - 1910). Rama V is considered a great king for his modernisation of Siam. He also had a great appreciation for all the Thai cats. Doctor Strange is a whole new trip Marvel has amped things up to 11 with their latest superhero movie
Kanin Srimaneekulroj editor1@classactmedia.co.th
T
o put it in very simple terms, Doctor Strange – the latest Marvel Studios film to join their cinematic pantheon – is a tangle of contradictions. Fresh yet familiar, inventive yet conventional, Doctor Strange succeeds in turning up the visual spectacle joyride quality Marvel’s films have always been known for to 11. Director Scott Derrickson bombards us with a relentless stream of brilliant, trippy, kaleidoscopic visuals that feel genuinely exciting to behold – especially in IMAX 3D. Less brilliant is the way it sticks rather closely to the tried-and-true Marvel formula for superhero origin-story films, complete with the same under-served villain and token love interest that have been a problem
@thephuketnews
with many of their past films. If you thought the world-bending visuals seen in the likes of Inception or even Harry Potter were trippy, you haven’t seen anything yet. Starting with a psychedelic visual trip through the multiverse, Doctor Strange delivers set-piece after set-piece of incredible reality-breaking magic, with buildings folding and turning in on themselves and constant shifts in gravity, forcing the characters to run on solid ground one moment and up the side of buildings in another. The film’s martial arts-inspired spell casting effects are also a beautiful spectacle to behold, even if a little limited. While the world-bending magic spells are undoubtedly cool, most of the characters in the film seem to lack creativity in how to use their magic in action scenes, opting to just use their magic to conjure various weapons instead of any kind of
Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular Doctor Strange. bombastic spell casting. It’s one of the film’s many puzzling contradictions, as you’d expect a sorcerer powerful enough to turn city blocks around like a Rubik’s cube to do more than conjure an invisible air-sword over and over again, though you’ll likely be too dazzled by the accompanying light show to care. Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t disappoint as the titular arrogant-yet-brilliant neurosurgeon, bringing his usual gravitas to a role that – perhaps unfortunately – feels more than a little similar to Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark. Nevertheless, Cumberbatch’s strong performance (forced American accent aside) imbues the character with such charisma that it’s always a joy to see him on-screen. In fact, the star-studded cast of Doctor Strange, which features such talented performers as Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong and Rachel McAdams, is per-
haps the film’s strongest saving grace, as each player brings their best to bear, imbuing what would otherwise have been relatively bland, one-dimensional characters with such presence that it becomes quite easy to overlook the flaws in the script. In conclusion, Doctor Strange can be easily described as a typical Marvel film taken to its extreme: a thrilling, fast-moving spectacle peppered with excellent humour and action with an under-served villain and a script that is perhaps too formulaic for its own good. Still, the film’s otherworldly quality and excellent comedic moments brings to mind Guardians Of The Galaxy in terms of its inventiveness, bringing us a fresher, stranger (I’m sorry. It’s right there!) version of the Marvel films we know and love. You’ll definitely want to watch this film in IMAX 3D for the best experience. Bangkok Post

Clean slate for a classic brunch Mark Knowles editor1@classactmedia.co.th
T
he re-branding of the local hotel industry’s Grande Dame Indigo Pearl to The Slate has been a hot topic in hospitality circles since the news broke earlier this year. Indigo Pearl was already known across the island for its eclectic décor and lavish Sunday brunches, a reputation it had been steadily building since it began offering its Sunday brunch over eight years ago. When I was invited to attend The Slate’s first Sunday brunch for the high season last weekend, I was well aware of the Indigo Pearl’s stellar reputation and that their Sunday brunch been perfected as it underwent several changes in theme and style over the years. So as I arrrived at The Slate, I was all the more interested to see what, if anything, had changed since my last fantastic brunch experience there in 2014. So it was that we were ushered in to the air-conditioned cool of Rivet restau-
rant and seated overlooking table after table replete with gourmet goodies. After ordering our drinks we grabbed our plates and headed outside to see what was on offer. As it turns out, what was on offer was just about anything you could imagine. For me at least, it’s hard to know where to start when you’re confronted with such a cornucopia of fabulous food. Fortunately my partner had no such reservations and made a beeline for the seafood, scooping up a selection of freshly shucked oysters, scampi, char-grilled lobster and tiger prawns, with a helping of light and crispy tempura veggies, all complemented with a dash of Thai seafood sauce and lemon juice. I decided to pace myself, starting with build-your-own bruschetta, topped with a selection of char-grilled veggies, buffalo mozzeralla, parma ham and gooey French brie. I couldn’t resist sampling a piece of the pan-fried foie-gras on dry toast with a housemade fruit chutney of sorts that perfectly complemented the richness of the liver.
Fresh oysters, lobsters, prawns and scampi are in abundance at The Slate. After our initial foray we were soon back for more and I found my self drifting towards the grill as the aroma of roasting meat lured me over. Here, the comprehensive selection was flashback to what wowed me about my first brunch here two years ago – there was roast lamb, beef, chicken and a wholepig, all on their spits, slowly cooking to perfection over hot embers. Alongside the roasting station were all the trimmings of a traditional Sunday roast – green beans, roast spuds, baby carrots and creamed spinach, along with several iterations of rich gravies, mustards and sauces. It looks like they mean business at The Slate and determined to reassert their reputation for providing a decadent, delicious Sunday Brunch. Next to the roast was the grilling station, with a selection of lamb rib chops, marbled sirloin steak and tenderloin fillet steaks – already to be cut and cooked to your liking. The other side of the grill contained the aforementioned lobster and giant tiger prawns. Truly spoilt for choice, I hedged my bets and took a selection of the roast meat, and for good measure, a tenderloin, cooked medium-rare. Along with this came plenty of sides and a healthy slathering of gravy and Dijon mustard. In a rare moment of healthy-mindedness, I also made myself a salad from the smorgasbord of fresh greens, veggies and roasted nuts at the salad bar. My partner continued her seafood sojourn with an array of sashimi and sushi, then mussels steamed with wine and their own juices and young coconut to wash it down, a very fitting selection for our Andaman sea-side location. It really is hard to describe the decadent selection of dishes available at The Slate’s brunch, suffice it to say there is something for everyone. Including fantastic Indian curries with crispy parathas, a selection of bitesized Thai delicacies and spicy seafood dishes, Greek-style souvlaki and falafel wraps and so much more. By this point, we were well on the way to being full, so decided to take a break and wander around the lagoonlike family-pool which sits adjacent to Rivet. We lamented that we had not
Indulge in some fabulous French cheeses. brought our swimming gear for a post brunch dip and cocktail by the pool, as it’s all included in the brunch price. Returning to our seats we decided to wind down the day with a glass of wine, some ripe french cheeses, fresh fruit and a selection of the delicate petit fours on offer at the dessert bar. It seems that Design Hotels, which recently welcomed The Slate into its portfolio boutique and luxury hotels, knows the cardinal rule – “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. They haven’t tried to re-invent the wheel with brunch at The Slate, choosing instead to make a great brunch even better. It certainly doesn’t hurt that almost all of the highly experienced staff and management have been retained and seem invigorated to take dining at The Slate to new heights of quality and service. Sunday Brunch at The Slate is held weekly througout the high season from 12pm until 3:30pm. Prices vary according to your free-flow drinks selection, starting from B2,050++ per person with soft drinks. Kids are welcome. Make sure you bring your swimwear. ri Suwanna-Benja, 64, slowly climbs down the pier’s stairs, boarding the longtail boat with her granddaughter’s help. However, once on board, she gets into position, revs the engine and manoeuvres the vessel like she were playing with an old toy. “I have been driving a longtail boat for more than 40 years,” Sri says, while docking at the pier in front of Chandra Kasem Palace, Ayutthaya. Like other longtail tour boats, hers can accommodate up to eight persons and she takes care of all her passengers like old friends. Established in 1350 as the capital of its namesake kingdom, the old city of Ayutthaya lies on an island formed by the confluence of three rivers, Lopburi, Pasak and Chao Phraya. The waterways served as transport routes linking the former capital city with other towns. Here, many places, Chandra Kasem Palace for example, face the rivers and canals. So the perfect way to explore Ayutthaya is by boat. “This area once was a floating market. There were outlets situated on bamboo rafts, lining the river. These outlets offered food and utensils,” says Sri. “When the new market was built
Cruising the river is an alternative way to see Ayutthaya. Photos: Peerawat Jariyasombat on land, outlets on the rafts gradually moved out of the rivers. All were gone by the 1975,” she recalls. Still now, a number of neglected sawmills and rice mills can be seen along the rivers and dining boats, renovated from old rice barges, slowly cruise past them while diners enjoy meals on board. Sri makes her way to the southeast corner of the island where the high gable of Wat Phananchoeng’s main pavilion can be seen from a distance. She docks the boat at the pier, and I take a short walk into the pavilion amid the haze of joss sticks. Chinese tourists pack the walkway and quietly move under dim, high-ceiling rooms of the pavilion. Built in 1324, 26 years before the city of Ayutthaya was officially founded,
Balloon festival in Shan State
S
han State in the east of Myanmar is currently celebrating a spectacular balloon festival that will see the launch of over a hundred traditional paper balloons. The festival is currently underway and will run until November 15. Held in a remote field in the mountains of the mysterious Shan State in eastern Myanmar, this year’s festival is more spectacular than ever, according to the organisers. The festival is part of Tazaungdaing, the Festival of Lights, which is celebrated across the country in the middle of November each year. Huge papier-mâché hot air balloons in different shapes and sizes are launched in the afternoon from the festival grounds near Taunggyi. At around 8pm each evening it’s time for the amazing spectacle of the fire balloon launching. Once the balloon reaches a height of about 20 metres the fireworks attached to the balloons explode in all directions. It’s a fun and fascinating festival which everybody should see if they have the chance while in Myanmar. In a country where 84 per cent of the households have no electricity, it’s no surprise that many activities at the festival run without electricity. A manpowered Ferris wheel is one example. Simply walking around the festival field taking in the exotic sites great fun, as thousands of Shan people celebrate with food, drinks and games. The festival has been running for many decades and the Shan people are keen to keep their balloon tradition alive. When the balloons are lit up it’s a magical sight and unlike any other firework display you’re likely to see. @thephuketnews
Hundreds of papier-mâché ballons filled with fireworks are launched from the festival grounds. Photo: Myanmar Tourism If you’re not in the Taunggyi area (which is near the famous tourist destination of Inle Lake) in November, it’s still a great time to travel in Myanmar. The monsoon rains are gone. Their legacy is lush greenery all over the country. It’s the time that yellow robes and many other accessories are offered to monks around the country. During the days before the festival you will see bamboo poles with donations (including banknotes folded in beautiful shapes) around towns and villages. During the festival, hot air balloons are launched throughout the country, although at a smaller scale than Taunggyi. Most temples organise weaving competitions. It’s a good time to be in any up-country town in Myanmar. Not being able to book your flight to Myanmar in time to visit this year? The dates for next year are already announced: 29 Oct – 3 Nov 2017. Wat Phananchoeng houses a huge gilded seated Buddha image. This highly revered Buddha statue, called Luang Poh To, is popular with Buddhist tourists, particularly those from China. A kilometre south of Ayutthaya is a Japanese village founded by Japanese traders who came to Ayutthaya for sappan wood, lead, tin, forest products and deer hides, which were used by their warriors to make coats, gloves and firearm cases. Today it is a museum telling stories about the relationship between Ayutthaya and Japan. The Japanese contributed to the development of Thai sweets such as Foy Thong, while the Thais influenced the evolution of Japanese rice liquor. South of the island there are also

Before long we come upon Wat Phutthaisawan. King Uthong, the first king of Ayutthaya, established this temple in 1353 to memorialise the campsite where he lived while his new city was being built on the island. A short ride further, towering pagodas of Wat Chaiwatthanaram, constructed in 1630 after King Prasat Thong returned victorious from an invasion of Khmer lands, are visible in the distance. All of the pagodas are in good shape, making them one of the most stunning spectacles in Ayutthaya, particularly when viewed from the river. Bangkok Post

Targeting your ads LET’S GET SOCIAL
Teen ‘faked Facebook page’ to frame woman
Daniel Villota
In this new column we will work towards connecting hospitality businesses with the right customers through social media channels. It’s a brave new world for business and we will do our best to equip you for it!
L
ast week, Facebook hit US$7.01 billion (B244.8bn) in revenue in the third-quarter of this year. That’s a 56-per-cent increase compared with the same period last year. In 2012 Facebook passed the billionuser mark and as of the third quarter of 2016, Facebook had 1.79 billion monthly active users. According to Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Wehner, there are three main factors contributing to Facebook’s growth – an increase of ad load, an increase of users and an increase in time spent on the platform. While Facebook has more than 50 million active business pages, it only has three million active advertisers – and in 2017, it is expected that many more advertisers will join Facebook and Instagram’s advertising platforms. So will your business be one of them and how can spending money on Facebook ad campaigns benefit your business? As I wrote in a previous article, Facebook has an incredible capability to deliver content to a very targeted audience, something that no other media platform can offer. With Facebook’s massive user base, even tapping into a

A Use the tools Facebook provides to help you zero in on your target market. Photo: Surendar Kumar B targeted niche market with your product or service can expose you to a huge number of potential customers. However, keep in mind that even though Facebook may look straightforward for your advertising campaigns, you must spend your money wisely – particularly with the “Boost your post” option. Boosting every photo, video or link posted may garner your business with many “Likes”. However, that does not necessarily turn those ‘Likes’ into customers. Good social media marketers are increasingly shying away from the boost button and developing more complex and focused marketing strategies. Some of the best advertising practices on this platform involve a feature called Power Editor or Ads Manager. These simple-to-use programs allow you to easily identify 11 different objectives you want to achieve with your ads and, with the use of detailed metrics, enable you to gauge whether your ad is having the desired affect. For example, if your source of business is around your physical location, targeting people around your area would be a great option. You can even customise your audience from a customer list made up of existing customers’ email addresses or by targeting people
who have visited your website. You can also create many versions of similar ads to test them out on different audiences to see what works best. This is a powerful tool to hone your ads and really target them for specific purposes and audiences. By arranging the placement of links, photos, text and so on, you can begin to see which style of ad is working better and continue to hone it so your ads become more targeted and much more effective at their goal, whether it be garnering page Likes, click-throughs to your website or downloading your app. This ability to start wide and narrow down your campaign to the most effective ads, aimed at the right demographic, helps you reduce spending and get more bang for your buck. For those of you who have tried this already, it’s easy to see why this is one of the most essential tools for any successful advertising campaign. There is a lot to learn when you begin to create and optimise your campaigns. But the more you do it, and take note of the feedback metrics, the better you will get. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you will always succeed, but it’s probably the best advice to keep in mind when spending your money.

Koh Pha Ngan Police questioned the 16-year-old they referred to as “Jack” on Oct 29. His real name was not revealed because he is a minor. They found that Jack, a student at a vocational school in the southern resort province Surat Thani, had allegedly opened a personal Facebook page in the name of Ms R, the 27-year-old wife of his girlfriend’s father, Mr D, 33, a shop owner on Koh Pha Ngan. Their names have been withheld to protect the identity of the girl. After being alerted about a Facebook page containing lese majeste posts, police on Oct 27 invited the couple for questioning. They claimed the page was a fake, created to convict Ms R, possibly by A (name withheld), Mr D’s daughter from his previous marriage. The police later questioned the girl, who allegedly confessed that she’d been having problems with her stepmother, who she felt had stolen her father. She allegedly asked Jack, her boyfriend, to create the page and post the offending messages so people would think they came from her stepmother. Pol Maj Gen Apichart Boonsriroj, head of the investigators, said officers had initially charged Jack with lese majeste and violating the Computer Crime Act. They plan to take him to the Koh Samui Court to seek his detention. They are investigating further whether to charge Ms A and on what grounds. Bangkok Post

Bay Marketing (Thailand), the local arm of the US-based e-commerce giant, will give its brand a fresh look in a bid to attract younger customers. The move is to adapt to the millennial market and increase brand awareness among the youngergeneration consumers, said Boonphan Boonprayoon, country manager of eBay Marketing (Thailand). “We’re on the verge of giving our brand a new look, which is expected to be completed by March 2017,” he said last week after a seminar entitled “Thailand Mobile Summit 2016” organised by Bangkok Entrepreneur. The brand update will be its biggest ever investment since its Thai debut seven years ago. “Thailand retains its top spot for the largest number of e-commerce trans@thephuketnews
actions in Asean during the past few years,” said Mr Boonphan, adding that e-Bay Thailand will continue focusing on exports by small and medium-sized and individual operators. Gems and jewellery, auto accessories and home and garden products are among the top three export products. Mr Boonphan said 57 per cent of eBay’s total gross merchandise volume in the second quarter involved mobile device touch points, ranging from searching to purchasing. Mobile commerce transactions accounted for US$9.5 billion of the total $21 billion gross merchandise volume. There are one billion product items globally, 80% of which are new items. “Mobile commerce is forecast to account for half of global e-commerce transaction volume by 2018, thanks to the 3.4 billion mobile broadband subscriptions worldwide,” he said.
Mr Boonphan said the trend in consumer behaviour is going beyond the mobile-commerce experience to embrace seamless cross-border commerce by offering customers a seamless online shopping experience across multiple channels and smart devices that blend the online and offline worlds. “This is why brands must go omnichannel, an approach to marketing and retail that utilises multiple communication channels to reach customers,” he said. Cross-border commerce is also gaining momentum. The international market accounts for nearly 57% of eBay Inc’s sales, while 95% of its commercial sellers engage in exporting. Mr Boonphan said e-commerce operators need to move towards the smart commerce platform through the use of artificial intelligence tools in order to simplify key information to get the

PCG host touring BCB CRICKET
Mark Whetton
L
ast Saturday (Nov 5) saw the Phuket Cricket Group (PCG) take on a team from the British Club Bangkok (BCB) at the ACG. The match took place under sunny conditions although a soggy pitch made fours hard to come by. The match was a two innings affair with the 1st innings of 15 overs while the 2nd innings was curtailed to 12 overs. Batsmen had to retire after scoring 20 runs. BCB won the toss and elected to bat first for their 1st innings. Despite losing the early wicket of A Spedding for just one run, the next two batsmen put together a 50 run partnership before D Allwright retired on 24. Soon after R Gupte also retired after making 21. These retirements brought BCB young gun B Eastwell and D Narula to the crease. Eastwell batted out the rest of the innings for 18 not out but Narula fell for just nine runs. None of the PCG bowlers went for too many runs but only Dupont picked up any
VCT skipper Martin Platts ponders his next delivery. Photo: Michael Way wickets. After the 15 overs were up, BCB had made a respectable 94. PCG then took to the field for their 1st innings. They lost a couple of quick wickets to be 30 for three after six overs. But two retirements from Van Blerk (24 not out) and P Jha (22 not out) saw the score skip ahead to 83 before they lost their 4th wicket. After their alloted 15 overs
PCG had acquired 98 runs to go into the lunch break with a four run lead. The pick of the BCB bowlers was Eastwell who nabbed two wickets off his two overs for 14 runs. After lunch BCB began their 2nd innings of 12 overs. They got off to a bad start when Allwright was out after facing just two balls. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals but the scoreboard
was also ticking over. Although no retirements were seen in this innings, several batsmen chipped in; namely Spedding (13), Eastwell (19) and Narula (12). The PCG bowlers shared the wickets around but Jha was the pick of the bunch with two wickets for 12 runs off three overs. After their 12 overs, BCB had added 63 runs to their 1st innings of 94 meaning PCG needed 60 runs for a win. Sixty off 12 overs is not a big ask in cricket and PCG’s opening batsmen got off to a steady start. However, S Ullah was eventually clean bowled for 11 in the 4th over. This brought Van Blerk to the crease who smacked his first delivery out of the park for six demonstrating that he was in no mood to drag the innings out any longer than it need be. But Shah’s fellow opening batsman S Hamilton was soon on his way back to the pavilion on 16 runs. So PCG found themselves at 35/2 after four overs, therefore, requiring 25 runs off eight overs. Eastwell struck twice in his next over and D Misha demolished Van Blerk’s middle stump
leaving PCG a bit nervous. But some sensible batting from H Muhammad and Jha saw them steer PCG to a comfortable win. Eastwell was again the pick of the BCB bowlers after taking three wickets for just 10 runs off his two overs. The following day saw BCB play the Village Cricket Team (VCT) in what has become an annual social match. Despite VCT taking a one year sabbatical from the local cricket scene, it was evident they had not lost their form as they were seen “warming up” with refreshments in the ACG Boundary Bar early in the day. VCT skipper M Platts lost the toss and his team were sent in to bat first. Their opening batsmen K Quilty (10) and M Rehman (13) got the side off to a steady but cautious start, but when Quilty fell in the 8th over with the score on 34, further wickets fell in quick succession. Only Platts managed to also make double figures, but when he fell for 10, all hope was lost. The VCT were all out in the 23rd over after making a modest 66 runs. D Mishra was
the star bowler for the visitors picking up three wickets off three overs for just eight runs. After drinks BCB strolled out to the middle to take down a target of 67 from their 25 overs. Maybe it was the visitor’s Saturday night’s antics, or the extra energy levels from the Boundary Bar for the VCT lads, but whatever it was it was working for the VCT bowlers. None of the BCB’s first four batsmen managed to make double figures with J White and C Murphy taking early wickets. White in fact was sitting on a hat-trick when his next delivery saw an edge fly directly to Rehman in the gulley who unfortunately made a dog’s dinner of it. A hat-trick wicket is a rare event in cricket so Rehman was appropriately “fined” in the slammer session after the match. Despite the regular loss of wickets, BCB managed to cross the finish line in the 20th over for the loss of seven wickets to take what was a well-deserved win. Rehman was VCT’s top bowler taking three wickets from five overs for just 14 runs. Needless to say it was an entertaining weekend of cricket all round and PCG and VCT look forward to the BCB lads returning to Phuket next year. Next up on the fixtures list for PCG are the ANZA Cricket Club from Singapore who are scheduled to play tomorrow (Nov 12) at the ACG. Start time for that match will be midday. The PCG are always looking for new players and officials to assist with the running of cricket on the island. For further information about cricket on Phuket, visit the PCG website at www.phuketcricket.com or e-mail the PCG committee at phuketcricketgroup@gmail. com. They can also be found on Facebook.

It has been a hotly contested league with 1Bar and Wet Dreams both swapping positions at the top of the table throughout the competition, and it couldn’t have been any tighter going into the final round. For the final round last Thursday, Wet Dreams were away to Dirty Nellies, while 1Bar were at home to Sports Bar. Both teams were favourites to win their respective matches, so most thought that it would all came down to who would win by the highest margin. Team members from 1Bar celebrate their victory and taking the league title after last Thursday’s (Nov 3) game. but Dirty Nellies had different plans and held them off to get a 7-4 win. So it all came down to 1Bar’s result. Wet Dreams could only hope that 1Bar would get beaten, but unfortunately that wasn’t to be the case. 1Bar were far too strong for Sports Bar and they walked away from the game with a massive 11-0 win giving them the league title.

Kiatisak calls for more goals FOOTBALL THAILAND COACH KIatisak Senamuang is worried about his team’s lack of goals. The national side are training at Kirin Valley in Khao Yao for their World Cup qualifier against Australia in Bangkok on Tuesday (Nov 15) and the Southeast Asian championship, known as the AFF Suzuki Cup, which starts four days later. Thailand have lost all four of their games in Group B of Asia’s final qualifying stage for the 2018 World Cup, conceding 10 goals and scoring just once. “Scoring is one of our main problems and we must improve this,” Kiatisak said on Tuesday (Nov 8). Thailand were originally scheduled to play Iran in a warm-up match on Wednesday
(Nov 9) but it was cancelled. “It’s a pity that we don’t have a warm-up game ahead of the match against Australia, so we divide into two teams and play each other,” he said. Meanwhile, the team have been promised a B10-million reward for a win at Rajamangala National Stadium. Besides the reward, announced by Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Gen Somyot Poompunmuang on Monday (Nov 7), the team also welcomed defender Tana Chanabut back to training for the first time since he was injured against Iraq early last month. Somyot said, “I know that anything can happen in the match [against Australia], but I want them [the Thai team] to play with their heart. I don’t want them to play for money. I want them to play for His

Majesty the King [who passed away last month].” It would be a big surprise if Thailand get a result against Australia, who are currently second in Group B of Asia’s final qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup. At the Thai team’s camp coach Kiatisak Senamuang said that Tana had started training with the squad but the defender was not fully fit yet. Kiatisak said some of his men were now 100 per cent fit and the rest were close to hitting their peak. “Some players still need more time to regain full fitness but we are not rushing anyone,” he said. “At this moment, we cannot say which players will be used in the match against Australia. It will depend on our game plan.” Kiatisak said he was “quite disappointed” that Buriram United had decided to pull Narubadin Weerawatnodom out of the national team. The defender injured his shoulder during training recently. “We had asked the FAT president to negotiate with Buriram to let Narubadin train with the team, but the club refused,” Kiatisak said. Knee injury means Ratchanok may miss tournaments BADMINTON Bangkok Post
W
orld No.2 Ratchanok Intanon’s season is likely to be curtailed due to a knee injury, her handler Kamala Thongkorn said on Tuesday (Nov 8). The former top-ranked shuttler has been suffering from a knock which she sustained in September, when she crashed out in the second round of the Korea Open. She has since missed the Denmark Open and the French Open. The 21-year-old was earlier expected to be back for next week’s China Open and the Hong Kong Open the week after, but unfortunately is still not fully fit. “She has not recovered as quickly as we had hoped. It’s going to take a while longer,” Kamala said.
“We appraise her progress every day, and so far she is still unable to run properly.” The Thai star suffered an injury to the same left knee during the Olympics in August. Despite not being fully fit, she went on to play at the Japan Open and the Korea Open, where she lost in the quarter-finals and second round respectively. “We rushed her back to play in Japan and South Korea,” Kamala said. Kamala said that it was too late for her player to withdraw from the upcoming tournaments in China and Hong Kong. So it is likely she will take to the court and play some shots before retiring in the first rounds, Kamala said. This will earn her almost 5,000 points and help strengthen her grip on a place at the Dubai World Superseries Finals, according to
Kamala. Based on her current ranking, Kamala is confident that Ratchanok will qualify for the season finale, but she is unsure if the player will be able to recover in time for the event to be held from Dec 14-18. “With just a month to go, I am not sure she can recover in time,” Kamala said. “If not, then her season is over.” Ratchanok is currently third in the rankings for Dubai and only needs to be the top eight to qualify for the World Superseries Finals. Ratchanok, the 2013 world champion, won three titles in April but has since suffered a slump in form. Hazard has emerged from hibernation
Chelsea produced one of the most dazzling performances in recent Premier League history in their 5-0 demolition of Everton and Eden Hazard was their thrilling inspiration. The Belgian winger scored Chelsea’s opener, cutting in from the left and drilling a shot into the bottom-right corner, and had a hand in the second, third and fifth goals. But the fourth goal, which he scored, was his masterpiece. After nonchalantly flicking a pass to Pedro down the right-hand touchline, he gathered the Spaniard’s adroit back-heel and hared into the box before slamming a low shot past Maarten Stekelenburg. England’s

Samba style fuels Reds
When Liverpool were last crowned kings of English football 26 years ago, it was John Barnes and Ian Rush who powered the Reds to the title. In an era when foreign imports were rare, England winger Barnes and Wales forward Rush were the best of British and Liverpool were happy to make the most of their talents. But these days the global game offers more opportunities for overseas talents to thrive in the Premier League and Liverpool has proved a fitting venue for Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino to display their skills. The Brazilian forwards scored one each as Liverpool ripped Watford to shreds in a 6-1 victory that sent them to the top of the

Firmino has scored five times and assisted three goals in his past seven league games. If the deadly duo can maintain that blistering form, Liverpool could be celebrating the end of their title drought by May.

Never count Zlatan out
Of all the players at United and perhaps any he has coached Jose Mourinho seems to have a special relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. His forthright defence ahead of the Swansea game of the charismatic Swede’s lack of goals contrasted with the personal criticisms he’s made on the likes of Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this season. No doubt they will both take a huge amount of satisfaction from the end result as Ibrahimovic ended over 600 minutes of game time without a goal with a brace. Admittedly they came against a Swansea side whose morale is near rock bottom and for whom a change of manager – Bob Bradley in for Francesco

Kane has Arsenal’s number
After scoring just three goals on their previous six outings, Tottenham Hotspur were relieved to be able to recall Harry Kane for the trip to Arsenal after his seven-week lay-off with an ankle ligament problem. The England striker did not disappoint, netting a 51st-minute equaliser from the penalty spot to cancel out Kevin Wimmer’s own goal and earn Spurs a 1-1 draw that preserved the last unbeaten record in the division. Mauricio Pochettino’s team have not scored from open play in six matches, but Kane’s return – at the tip of a 3-4-2-1 formation – gave them a greater cutting edge. He headed narrowly wide from Christian Eriksen’s

ROSBERG ON THE BRINK Formula One could have new world champion after penultimate grand prix FORMULA ONE BOX OF NEUTRALS Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com
N
ico Rosberg could walk away from the Brazilian Grand Prix as Formula One’s newest world champion if he wins this Sunday’s (Nov 13) race at Sao Paolo. At 2016’s first ‘match point’ round in Mexico, Rosberg would have had to win the race and rely on the remote likelihood of eventual race winner Lewis Hamilton finishing tenth or lower to seal the deal. Instead, reigning world champion Hamilton, embarking on an uphill title defence after a patchy season coloured by intermittent mechanical troubles, cruised to pole position and an easy win on an off weekend for the title leader, who settled for second. At the penultimate Brazilian Grand Prix, however, the mathematics of the situation is acute: with 25 points available for a race win a RosbergHamilton one-two finish would grow the German’s 19-point lead into an unassailable 26 points with one round to spare.
Mercedes AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg powers his car during the Formula One Mexico Grand Prix on October 30. Photo: Pedro Pardo/AFP With the championship within touching distance the fan-favourite Autódromo José Carlos Pace is the closest Rosberg has ever been to winning his elusive first crown. Though the 2014 season was decided at the year’s final race in Abu Dhabi, Rosberg’s 17-point deficit to Hamilton made his title hopes unlikely at best before mid-race technical gremlins eliminated him from contention altogether. In 2015 Rosberg’s title
chances were academic, and Hamilton easily overpowered his teammate three rounds out from the finish. The 2016 season has been the most evenly matched of the Mercedes teammates’ years leading the championship race, with momentum taking turns to swing wildly between each driver. Rosberg opened the year with four wins in a row for an early lead before Hamilton seized the advantage with six
wins in the next eight races. Rosberg’s four wins from five after the mid-season break won him back his lead, but the last two rounds have proved straightforward affairs for Hamilton after the Briton came to terms with the prospect of defeat. Working in Rosberg’s favour is his record in Brazil. Only three drivers in history have more than Rosberg’s two Brazilian grand prix wins, and both victories have come in
the last two seasons. Though Hamilton has sealed his own championship in Brazil after he finished fourth in 2008, his career has yielded only three Brazilian podiums from nine starts, including two second-place finishes behind his teammate in 2014 and 2015. The form guide leans towards Rosberg, but old Interlagos brings with it the promise of unpredictable weather around the claustrophobic
4.3-kilometre circuit. The circuit last decided a championship in 2012, when title leader Sebastian Vettel was forced to claw his way up from 22nd to sixth to secure his third crown from Fernando Alonso in a frenetic grand prix. It was the only Brazilian Grand Prix Red Bull Racing failed to win during its fouryear championship tenure, and its renewed pace in the 2016 season is sure to see it play a part in the fight for the podium. But the championship permutations will take a back seat for the famously partisan fans, which will be out in force to see off the retiring Felipe Massa at his last Brazilian Grand Prix. Massa, who was born in Sao Paulo, forever endeared himself to the enthusiastic crowd in 2008 with his dignified title defeat at the hands of Lewis Hamilton in F1’s most dramatic season finale. Williams has been unable to deliver Massa a racewinning car in 2016, but his hard-fought third place in 2014 will be on the minds of his Brazilian supporters as they attempt to propel him to a fairytale final podium. It is Brazil, after all, where stranger things usually happen.
No alcohol in streets, public places at Qatar World Cup FOOTBALL A LCOHOL W I LL BE banned from streets and public places and if Qatari officials get their way even stadiums during the 2022 World Cup, the head of the country’s tournament organising committee said on Tuesday (Nov 8). The comments by Hassan Al-Thawadi will further alarm football traditionalists already unhappy that the tournament will be moved to the winter because of fierce summer temperatures in Qatar. A ban on alcohol inside stadiums – there has long been speculation about what
the conservative Muslim country would do on the tricky issue of alcohol for the World Cup – could bring organisers into conflict with Fifa and powerful sponsors. “There will be no alcohol consumption on the streets, squares and public places and that is final,” Al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said in an interview printed on the website of Arabic language newspaper Al-Sharq. “We are against the provision of alcohol in stadiums and their surroundings.” There will not be a total alcohol ban, but drinking will be permitted only in
Drinking alcohol is not illegal in Qatar and alcohol is available in hotels. Photo: Karim Jaafar/AFP “far-away places”, said AlThawadi, without going into details. Drinking of alcohol is not illegal in Qatar and alcohol is available in hotels, while expats who live in the Gulf emirate can buy drink after applying for a licence. Public drinking however is prohibited and bringing
alcohol into the country is also forbidden. The official said Qatar would resist attempts to change the country’s laws for the tournament, as has happened with previous World Cup hosts. “I did not get into a discussion with Fifa on this matter and there has been
great pressure from Fifa on Russia (2018 hosts) to change its laws,” he said. “But our position is clear – we will legalise according to Qatari law and commensurate with the customs and traditions.” This could potentially lead to problems with football’s governing body Fifa and major sponsors, including some drinks giants. In the run-up to the tournament in Brazil in 2014, it was widely reported that Fifa demanded alcohol be served at stadiums, which was against Brazilian law at the time. The South American hosts finally relented. As well as the impact on
cultural traditions there has been growing concern in Qatar about the link between alcohol and the behaviour of fans, especially following clashes at the Euros in France earlier this year, most notably between English and Russian fans. Organisers have already stated they feared alcohol helped contribute to some of the violence seen in France. Al-Thawadi said earlier this year that drunken fans during the 2022 World Cup would be treated “gently”. It has been estimated by organisers that up to one million fans could descend on Qatar for the 2022 tournament. AFP thephuketnews
