hree proposed designs for an overpass to alleviate traffic jams at the north end of the bypass road will face staunch opposition from the local tourism industry, who have labelled the plan an “eyesore”. At a public meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall on Tuesday, Kasame Sriwarana, a civil engineer in the Highways Department explained the overpass would relieve traffic congestion. Three schemes were proposed: a “Y-ty pe” scheme with a tri-directional overpass above the intersection, a “Trumpettype” scheme with two loop ramps on the east side of the intersection, and a straight overpass taking through traffic from the north into Sapam. “These are the three common types of overpass that have been used in Thailand,” Kaweerat Deeprasertwong, the overpass project manager said. However, the feedback from local tourism busi-

nesses was generally negative; most were worried that a massive concrete construction would damage Phuket’s image. “This huge construction will be an eyesore,” said Sarayut Mallam, Vice President of the Phuket Tourist Association (PTA). “These may be the three most common types of overpass in Thailand, but we don’t think any of them suits Phuket at all. Phuket doesn’t need overpasss sprouting from the ground. We’re sure that visitors don’t expect to see that sort of thing here.” Others quailed at the thought of two years of dust and noise while the overpass is built. Bhuritt Maswongssa, another Vice President of the PTA, pointed that only one overpass wouldn’t totally relieve traffic problems. “I want to see the Highways Department looking

Woman jumps from burning building at a total solution for the entire system. Instead of just building overpasses, why don’t we look at making each high-density area more accessible?” he asked. Vichit Na Ranong, managing director of the Pearl Group and a former president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, described the project as “an achievement that will bring failure”. He also pointed out that a overpass would leave no space for the much-desired light rail system. “An underpass would be a better solution,” Mr Sarayut suggested. The Department’s engineers said underground construction would block existing water drainage, which might cause floods in the future. Continued on page 2

Tattoo artists want licences

Phuket’s legitimate tattoo artists have again asked the government to provide them with some sort of professional certificate to distinguish them from amateurs. They also want the government to set up a register for licensed tattoo artists. Following up on a meeting in June, which discussed the problem of Buddha images and other sacred images being tattooed onto inappropriate parts of the body – particularly below the waist – some of the tattoo artists, led by Phuket

Tattoo Artists Club president Pornchai Kleothanong, met with Vice Governor Somkiat Sangkaosuttirak at Phuket Provincial hall to discuss professional ethics. V/Gov Somkiat said “Any work you do should be honest, and guided by ethics, not just money.” The tattoo artists agree that ethics were important but Mr Pornchai said the club members also want a system with professional certificates and a government register. “This problem [of religious

The artists also requested that the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office train tattoo artists in hygiene and regularly check that standards are being maintained. “Not all of us are fully aware of how to keep equipment clean, so it would be helpful if some officers could be assigned to train us in cleanliness. There should be inspections every month,” Mr Pornchai explained. The Phuket Tattoo Artists Club now has more than 100 members, and Mr Pornchai

said he planned to get it upgraded to “Association” status so that tattoo artists will be in better standing, will work to the same standards and can be readily distinguished from the amateurs. Referring to ethics, he said that the Phuket Culture Office had provided some pointers, but club members need more time to draw up an appropriate code of ethics. This would take about a week, he said, after which the club would meet again with the Culture Office.

It is amateur artists who just walk along the beachfront looking for customers and then rent a hotel room to do the tattoo,” he told V/Gov Somkiat. “Therefore it would be better if artists in Phuket could have official certificates. Then, when any improper [religious] tattoo is found, we can trace who the artist is. “The register could also be used to stop unlicensed artists from getting hold of tattooing equipment,” he added.

Koreans push again for LRT deal

The boss of South Korean engineering consultancy Dohwa Engineering returned to Phuket on Wednesday to reemphasise the company’s interest in building the island’s proposed Light Rail Transit system (LRT). Sung-Min Lee, a president of the company, met Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha to present to him an analysis of how an LRT system could be built on the island. According to its website, Dohwa has been heavily involved in the development of a variety of rail systems in Korea and other countries. The company has selected seven LRT routes for Phuket, with priority being given to the route from Phuket International

Airport to Chalong Circle, budgeted at around B10 billion. “We would also like to look at doing a new route from Patong to Phuket Town,” Mr Lee said. “We’ve been thinking about a combination of LRT above ground and underground for high-density areas such as Patong.” Gov Tri told The Phuket News after the meeting that Dohwa claims it already has firm funding commitments to cover the B10 billion required for the priority route, so that Phuket would not have to come up with the money. The Phuket government is expected to call for bids next month. Ten companies have expressed interest.

The good news: Phuket has scored a record number of tourists in the first half of the year, and the trend seems likely to continue. The not so good news: Many of the incoming visitors are “zero-spend” tourists from China and South Korea, who buy packages at home that include flights, accommodation, meals and tours, meaning that they put very little into the Phuket economy directly. Also not so good: the airport’s owners, Airports of Thailand, expect almost 4 million passengers arriving at the airport this year – exceeding capacity by 22 per cent.

According to data released by property consultancy C9 Hotelworks, arrivals in the first half were up a massive 20 per cent on last year. The airport has already come under fire from a senatorial committee, which particularly criticised the shortage of immigration officials at passport control, resulting in long queues, even in the current low season (see page 4). The big numbers are not a huge surprise. Already the government’s Fiscal Policy Office is predicting 19.5 million arrivals for Thailand as a whole this year – a rise of almost 23 per cent on last

Two expats killed in car crash Two expats living in Phuket were killed late on Tuesday night after a car crash in Chalong. Police said 39-year-old Russian woman Elena Evseeva and her Ukrainian friend, aged 36, were killed when their Toyota Fortuner hit the curb and rolled into a canal at Land and House, a property development in southern Phuket, around 11.30pm. They became trapped in the car and drowned before rescuers could reach them. Police said the woman appeared to have been drinking.

year, and a record for the country (see page 19). Expansion of the airport with the addition of a new terminal is in the works. At the end of 2009 the government approved a B5.8-billion plan to increase the airport’s capacity to 12.5 million passengers by 2014. Construction is scheduled to start early next year. The new Pheu Thai government has also spoken about extending the Phuket airport runway so that fully-laden, fully-fueled Boeing 747s can take off, something that is currently impossible. This would open the doors for even more package tour traffic.

Overpass plan Continued from page 1 However, the Highways Department people said they would analyse the feedback from the meeting to try to work out a solution that solves the traffic problem and meet with general approval. A revised proposal will be presented to Phuket authorities and relevant people from the private sector next month. Mr Vichit reminded them, “You can get as big a budget as you like, but it will never be big enough to resurrect Phuket’s damaged environment. “We should consider the most sustainable solution.” –Paritta Wangkiat

Stop! Work must halt

The Forestry Department (FD) has instructed the Big Buddha Foundation (BBF) to wind down immediately its work constructing the Big Buddha statue park on top of the Nakkerd Hills and hand over the project to the Kata Kittisangkharam Temple. A meeting of FD officials and BBF representatives at Provincial Hall on August 4 resolved that, by the end of the year, the foundation must remove a statue of King Rama V and various buildings around the statue, all of which were built outside the provisions of the original project agreement. That agreement specified five years for the completion of the Big Buddha. It has taken about nine years so far and is

still not quite complete The current FD permit for work to be done on the forest reserve site expires on September 30. But the project has now spread well beyond its original scope – a small meditation centre and park around the Big Buddha – to include a plan for a Buddhist museum inside the enormous statue. The museum plan has now been ordered scrapped. Last April the BBF was cleared of allegations of mismanaging financial donations for the landmark and of bribing FD officials to ignore the fact that the project had not been completed by the original set date and that its scope had gone far beyond the original agreement. The Big Buddha can stay, but nothing else.

Senators rap airport shortcomings Members of a Senate committee have added their voice to those complaining that Phuket Airport does not have enough immigration officers, resulting in long queues at passport control, even in the current low season. The airport also has too

few seats for departing passengers and too many shops selling overpriced goods, said the president of the Senate Air Transportation Committee (ATC) Paradee Jongsukthanamanee, who visited the airport on Friday (August 5) with other members of the ATC.

She told media that she was surprised by long queues of passengers in the immigration hall, even though it is currently low season. “There are only half the number of immigration officers required,” she said. She also criticised the

departure lounge facilities. “There are too many unnecessary shops with high-priced goods, just like in a department store,” Ms Paradee said. “The convenience and comfort of passengers should be the priority of an airport, not just making money off them.”

Excessive parking fees for taxis and limousines are another issue that needs to be addressed, Ms Paradee said. After their inspection, the ATC plans to hold meetings with airport’s owner, Airports of Thailand, and other relevant authorities.

Students of Darasamuth School English Programme P 4/8 and their teacher Siaji Elisha were earlier this week rehearsing a show they performed yesterday in celebration of Mother’s Day. Mr Elisha helped choreograph the show which involves 24 students. The dance routine was to the song Haba Haba by Stella Mwangi. Being of African origin, Mr Elisha grew up learning Swahili. He said he wanted to share the language and

broaden the children’s horizon by introducing his African music and dance to the school. He said that this song is influenced by a Swahili proverb, meaning “Little by little, fill up the measure’’. The proverb promotes children thinking about what they want to be when they grow up, so on Thursday students dressed up like policemen, nurses, teachers, doctors and many other occupations. Phuket pork price soars Pork merchants in Phuket – like their counterparts across the country – have been suffering from the high price of pork which has led to consumers switching to other meats, despite government efforts to control prices. The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announcing last Saturday (August 6) a ceiling of B162 a kilo on the retail price, but sales have been sluggish. The Phuket News checked prices at the new municipal market on Ranong Rd, Phuket Town, on Monday and found pork selling below the new ceiling, with fillet at B160, fatback at B130 and streaky pork at B150 a kilo. But buyers are still finding this too expensive. Morakot Sangmanee, a pork merchant in the market, said even though he was paying more for the meat from the farm gate, he could not raise his price to customers. Even so, he admitted that the current prices were “quite high”.

“If the price of pork keeps on rising, consumers won’t buy it. They will buy other meat instead,” Mr Morakot said. The shortage of pork was initially caused by an outbreak of blue ear pig disease in July. This viral outbreak, combined with pig deaths from the hot summer weather, is predicted to cut pig production by 30 per cent this year, from 12 million animals to 8.4 million. Blue ear outbreaks have affected pig production elsewhere in Asia, including Myanmar, Vietnam and China. Adding to the damage from the virus, which is deadly in pigs, have been local outbreaks in Thailand of porcine epidemic diarrhoea and footand-mouth disease, the pigsite. com reported. On top of all this, the price of pig feed, especially broken rice, rice bran and soybean meal, has risen abruptly, resulting in the cost of feeding pigs going up by an average of 20 per cent. The Thai-Asean News

Young pigs at a Charoen Pokphand farm in Chiang Mai. Network (TAN) reported on Tuesday that the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand had warned that retail prices for pork could go to B200 a kilo

by September, but had urged the government to cancel its price controls. “The association urged the government to solve the issue

by supporting farmers with more breeding pigs, as shortages [of animals] are the main cause of expensive pig prices at farms,” TAN reported.

Walk turns deadly at famed viewpoint

Promthep Cape where a young woman fell to her death.

A walk along one of Phuket’s tourist spots turned to tragedy for a Thai woman last Wednesday afternoon. Police said a young woman – 20-year-old Yula Suwan from Chiang Rai, but a resident of Phuket for the past five years – was taking a photo at Promthep Cape when she slipped and fell into the rough sea below. Marine rescue officers from Tambon Chalong Ad-

ministrative Organisation used speedboats to rescue Miss Yula, but were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Before the accident, Miss Yula and her foreign boyfriend were walking down to the end of the cape to take some photos. When she stood on a rock, she slipped and fell into the water. Her body was taken to Vachira Hospital.

IN BRIEF Police round up chop shop gang Six members of a gang suspected of stealing and reselling motorbikes were arrested last Saturday in Patong. The six – three Burmese and three Thai – allegedly sold parts from stolen motorbikes, and also sold complete bikes to Burmese labourers for as little as B2,000 each. Kathu police had been investigating a house owned by the gang’s alleged leader Sutat Sopanhari, 22, on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd for several weeks before making the arrests. Eight stolen motorbikes, parts of a four or five disassembled bikes, tools, spray painting equipment, a stolen pickup truck belonging to an expat and six other stolen cars were seized during the police raid. The gang confessed to operating for about two years before being arrested.

Donations sought Work has started on the construction of a new four-storey outpatient building at Thalang Hospital, which is due to be completed by 2013. The new building on the area of 5.5 rai will replace the existing outpatient department, which is currently filled to overflowing most days. The hospital is appealing for donations to help pay for the new building. It will cost B103 million. The Ministry of Public Health will pay B87 million, leaving a shortfall of B16 million. To make a donation call Thalang Hospital on 076 311 866.

Plan still under discussion Police are confident their plan to reverse the one-way traffic system in Patong will go ahead in the coming weeks, but not everyone is apparently convinced. The plan, which was announced in April, is currently in the stage of hearing public opinion. “There are people who agree and disagree with this plan, and we can’t do anything until there is a consensus,” Kathu police major Sarawut Chooprasit said. “If it is agreed to proceed with the plan, it will be kicked off by October. “It might create some confusion at the start, but we believe it will help combat traffic jams in Patong.” Under the proposed plan, the existing one-way clockwise driving system in Patong would be changed to a one way

anti-clockwise route. Patong Mayor Pian Keesin and Patong police decided on the route change in the hope it will make driving easier, because right hand turns will be avoided. Turning left was more natural for drivers, they said. If the change goes ahead, vehicles will drive south along Thaweewong Rd, Patong Beach’s foreshore road. Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi road, the inland road parallel to Thaweewong Rd, will also change direction and vehicles will drive north, or anti-clockwise. Prachanukhro Rd will change direction, while Phra Baramee Rd will remain as a two-way. In the future Bangla Rd, Ruamjai Rd and other linking streets which are currently one way could change to two-way make it more convenient for drivers.

Villagers veto fuel station

Villagers worried about oil pollution have brought to a halt a plan to set up a refuelling station for boats on a raft off the coast in Rawai. At a meeting with the village head, Prasert Koomban, and a variety of government officials, villagers from Moo 5 said they were worried about the potential for oil spills from the refuelling station, which would be mounted on an existing raft that holds a water tank. When the B5 million fuelling station was originally proposed a year ago, villagers were in favour, especially when they heard that 10 per cent of profits from it would go into a fund to support the local Bang Kontee mosque. Today Mr Prasert explained again the advantages. “Usually, oil is available at

THE PHUKET NEWS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 2011

No Red Shirts in Cabinet New Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra finalised her new Cabinet on Tuesday, leaving out controversial leaders of the “Red Shirt” protest movement which helped propel her to power. Ms Yingluck took office on Monday with a vow to reunite the troubled nation after years of turmoil following the ousting of her brother Thaksin, including mass street protests by his Red Shirt supporters last year that turned deadly. Several Red Shirt leaders were elected as lawmakers with Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party but missed out on Cabinet appointments that could have angered Thaksin’s foes in military, government and palace circles. The Finance Minister’s post went to Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala, a former

secretary-general of financial watchdog the Securities and Exchange Commission. General Yuthasak Sasiprapa, a close ally of Thaksin, was tapped as Defence Minister – a key role for the new ruling party, which has endured difficult relations with the military following its overthrow of Thaksin in 2006. Gen Yuthasak was a deputy defence minister under the former billionaire telecoms tycoon-turned-Premier Thaksin, who lives in self-imposed exile to avoid a jail sentence passed in his absence for corruption. The Foreign Minister’s job went to Surapong Tovichakchaikul, 58, a relativelyunknown lawmaker with Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party. The line-up was announced after receiving approval from HM

King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Ms Yingluck, a 44-yearold political novice, was elected as Thailand’s first female Premier in a Parliamentary vote on Friday. She swept to an election victory last month with the support of her brother Thaksin, who is hailed by many rural people for his populist policies while in power but loathed by the Bangkok-based ruling elite. Ms Yingluck, a businesswoman described by her brother as his “clone”, faces the tough challenge of bringing unity to the politicallyvolatile kingdom. The situation escalated last year when more than 90 people, mostly civilians, were killed in clashes between the army and Red Shirt protesters. –AFP

Probing Kirsty Jones’ murder K irst y Jones was on an around-the-world trip 11 years ago when she was murdered in a guesthouse in Chiang Mai, but a leading police officer insists the unsolved case can still be brought to a “successful conclusion”, according to BBC Wales. Ms Jones, 23, from Tredomen, near Brecon, Powys, a Liverpool University graduate, was three months into a two-year around-the-world trip when she was raped and

strangled at the Aree guesthouse. Despite a number of arrests, no charges have ever been brought over her death, and the lengthy investigation has frustrated the Jones family. The family’s concerns led to Dyfed-Powys Police’s involvement in 2001, and forensic officers later secured the killer’s DNA. Speaking on the anniversary of her death this week, Chief Superintendent Steve

Hughson of Dyfed-Powys Police said the force continued to press the Thai police for action. “In October last year we responded to a letter of request from the Thai Attorney-General which meant the re-interviewing of a number of witnesses who are now residents in the UK. We also traced a number of witnesses living in Thailand and someone who was living in a commune in India,” said Ch Supt Hughson.

Abhisit re-elected Outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was re-elected last Saturday as leader of the now-opposition Democrat Party, despite fronting their crushing defeat in July’s general election. A day after his rival Yingluck Shinawatra of the Pheu Thai Party won Parliamentary approval to become the new Premier, the pro-establishment Democrats re-selected Abhisit to lead them after he ran unopposed for the job.

“He’s the most suitable person,” veteran party member Marut Bunnag told a party meeting in Bangkok before Abhisit won 96 per cent of the votes. Abhisit, who became Prime Minister in December 2008, had resigned last month as Democrat leader after his party clinched just 159 seats against Pheu Thai’s 265 in the July 3 election. He first became party leader in 2005. –AFP

Brits in trouble British nationals living in, or visiting Thailand are more likely to be arrested or admitted to hospital than in any other country, according to the latest British Behaviour Abroad Report issued by Britain’s foreign ministry, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. A total of 967 people required consular assistance in the period covered by the report, from April 1 last year to March 31 this year. Of these, 200 contacted local consuls after being arrested, 51 of them on drugs charges. A total of 347 British deaths in Thailand required consular action; 246 involved hospitalisation; five needed help after being raped and three after being sexually assaulted. Details of the remaining 166 cases are not revealed in the report. Food for thought for British expats in Thailand: of the 347 British deaths in the country in the past year, over 75 per cent were residents. Natural causes was the most frequent cause of death, followed by road traffic accidents. In absolute terms, Thailand comes fourth in the table of Brits requiring assistance, after Spain, the US and France, but in percentage terms the Land of Smiles wins by a country mile, with one in every 928 Britons visiting or living in Thailand calling for help. London’s burning Violence spreads as riots cause chaos The worst riots in Britain for decades spread to new cities on a fourth night as youths ran amok in Manchester and the industrial Midlands on Wednesday, after 16,000 police took to the streets of London. In Manchester, Britain's third-largest city, youths smashed shop windows and looted shops and chased photographers away from the scene, in what police described as the worst violence in 30 years. Elsewhere, hooded rioters set fire to buildings in West Bromwich and Wolverhampton in central England and a police station in nearby Nottingham was fire-bombed, although there were no reported injuries. Looters also targeted shops in the second city of Birmingham for another night and police were pelted with missiles in the north-west city of Liverpool. But in London there was no repeat of the wave of violence which left parts of the capital in flames on Monday

night, as vigilante mobs took to the streets to defend their communities. Police were bracing for more trouble after what they said was the worst night of disorder in living memory in the British capital, and their numbers were ramped up from 6,000 to 16,000 on Tuesday night as Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to do “everything necessary to restore order to the streets”. Shops in many parts of London closed early and put down their shutters on the advice of the police. The focus of Tuesday’s violence was Manchester in northwest England, where police were driven back by gangs of hundreds of youths who covered their faces with scarves and ski masks, and smashed their way into shops. In London, hundreds of Sikhs took to the streets to defend the community of Southall in the west while similar mobs of football supporters congre-

In a development which will do nothing to calm tensions, Britain’s police watchdog said it found no evidence that Mark Duggan – whose shooting by police last week was the catalyst for the riots in London – had fired a gun at officers. In a pre-planned operation, armed officers stopped the taxi in which Duggan, 29, was

travelling in the multi-ethnic district of Tottenham in north London. Shots were fired and Duggan died at the scene. Despite the controversy surrounding the shooting, Cameron warned rioters: “You will feel the full force of the law.” Police have arrested 685 people in London in three days, while 111 police officers were injured, Scotland Yard said.

Scotland Yard Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said the rampage by hundreds of hooded youths was “unprecedented” and police resources were stretched. The violence has raised questions about security ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games, and it prompted the cancellation of Wednesday’s friendly between England and the Netherlands at Wembley Stadium. –AFP

Woman jumps from burning building Seven It may become one of the defining images of this week’s London riots. The image, which was taken by Amy Weston for WENN news agency, has raced around the world online – with many people asking if it was fake. But Jonathan Grassi of WENN’s photo desk said the image was genuine and was part of a series of photos captured by Weston in the late evening during the third night of riots in London. “It’s slowed down our website because everyone is This photo, taken by Amy Weston for WENN news agency, linking to it and tweeting it,” he said about the company’s has raced around the world online.

The woman then jumps away from the window and falls into the raised arms of the emergency services personnel standing on the pavement. The last shot shows the group crowded around the woman, standing on a line of tram tracks on the street. It is not known what happened to the woman, if she was hurt and she was eventually taken to a hospital.

killed in Russia

Seven people were killed in a brawl and shoot-out between residents of two villages in Russia’s restive North Caucasus province of Dagestan early on Tuesday, the state news agency RIA said. Several people were taken to hospital in the village of Untsukul for treatment after a fight in which two people died, but shooting then broke out between the two sides. “The number of dead has risen to seven, including a seven- or eight-year-old girl,” a regional police officer said. –AFP

China’s first aircraft carrier starts sea trial

China’s first aircraft carrier on Wednesday left its shipyard in the country’s northeast to start its first sea trial, the state news agency Xinhua said. The revamped old Soviet ship’s sea trial was in line with the schedule of its refitting project and would not take long, the news agency said, quoting military sources. After returning from the trial, the carrier will continue

its refit and test work, the report said, adding that the vessel had set sail from its shipyard in the city of Dalian. Beijing last month sought to downplay the capability of its first aircraft carrier, saying the vessel would be used for training and “research”, amid concerns over the country’s military build-up. The project has added to regional worries over the coun-

try’s fast military expansion and growing assertiveness on territorial issues. It also comes amid heightened tensions over a number of maritime territorial disputes involving China, notably in the South China Sea, which is believed to be rich in oil and gas and is claimed by several countries. The issue has heated up recently with run-ins between

China and fellow claimants Vietnam and the Philippines, sparking concern among its neighbouring countries and the United States. In September, a row erupted between Japan and China over the disputed Senkaku Islands, known as the Diaoyu Islands in Chinese, located in the East China Sea. Chen Bingde, the nation’s top military official, only

provided the first official acknowledgment of the aircraft carrier in a Hong Kong newspaper interview in early June. The ship, once called the Varyag, was originally built for the Soviet navy. Construction was interrupted by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. China reportedly bought the ship’s immense armoured hull – with no engine, electrics or propeller – in 1998. –AFP

Texas polygamist gets life The leader of a Texas polygamist sect that saw more than 450 of its children seized in a police raid was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for his “spiritual marriage” to two young girls. Warren Jeffs, considered a prophet by his Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, showed no reaction as the jury’s sentence was delivered after less than an hour of deliberation. His reclusive sect was thrust into the spotlight in 2008 when Texas police raided a sprawling compound near the small town of Eldorado and seized 468 young boys and girls amid allegations of systemic sexual and physical abuse. The children were soon returned to their parents when

a court ruled that child welfare officials had overstepped their authority. However, the evidence gathered during the raid was damning. Documents recovered showed that Jeffs had take 78 illegal wives – 24 of whom were underage. He even married two 12-year-old girls to himself in a single day. He was also shown to be a party to 550 bigamous marriages, of which 67 were under the legal age. Jurors heard audio tapes recovered in the raid. One included the ritualistic rape of a 12-year-old girl performed by Jeffs in front of other women. “If the world knew what I was doing, they would hang

me from the highest tree,” Jeffs was quoted as saying after he talked of taking a 13-year-old girl as a child bride. Jeffs had been put on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list in May 2006 for charges of accomplice to rape in Utah. He was caught outside of Las Vegas in August 2006, but his conviction on two charges stemming out of the arranged marriage of a 14-year-old girl to her 19-year-old first cousin was overturned last year by a Utah court. Jeffs was found guilty last Thursday (August 5) in the Texas case of sexually assaulting the 12-year-old girl in 2006 and fathering a child with a 15-year-old girl in 2005, a claim backed by DNA evidence presented by prosecutors.

A tall, slender man perpetually stooped in court, Jeffs fired a team of Texas attorneys early on in the trial and chose to represent himself. He gave no opening statement, but preached during the trial about how the government was violating the right to religious freedom. Jeffs is the eighth man to be convicted of crimes such as sexual assault and bigamy through evidence found in the raid on the Yearning for Zion Ranch. The jury handed down the maximum sentence permitted under Texas law: life in prison for the first count of aggravated sexual assault and an additional 20 years for the second count of sexual assault. He must also pay a US$10,000 (B300,000 fine. –AFP

Malaysians charged over Aus drug bust Police in Australia investigating a major heroin and methylamphetamine smuggling racket arrested five Malaysian men and seized drugs worth A$4 million (B120 million), officials said on Wednesday. The alleged ringleaders, aged 48 and 28, were arrested

late Tuesday in Sydney, Australia – one en-route to the city’s airport and the other at a restaurant in the Chinese quarter, police said. “It is alleged the principals of the syndicate travelled to Australia from Malaysia for the sole purpose of overseeing

the establishment of a new ice (methylamphetamine) distribution network,” police said. The pair were charged with supplying a commercial quantity of heroin. Police said they had seized about two kilograms of heroin and two kilograms of ice in

connection with the ring, valued at a total of about A$4 million (B120 million) Two other men, aged 38 and 39, were arrested in Sydney and charged with offences including commercial drug supply, participating in a criminal group and dealing

with the proceeds of crime. A fifth suspect, 23, was apprehended in southern Victoria. “This investigation has disrupted the Australian distribution network set up by this alleged syndicate. “It has potentially pre-

vented large quantities of drugs from entering our streets,” said Asian Crime Squad Commander Scott Cook. Methylamphetamine, which is also called methamphetamine, is known as crystal meth, meth or ice. –AFP

Prints found on ‘bomb’ Fingerprints have been found on parts of a hoax bomb that had been chained to the neck of Australian teenager Madeleine Pulver. Miss Pulver spent 10 hours with the fake explosive strapped to her neck last Wednesday in her family home in Mosman, a north-shore suburb of Sydney. The hunt has intensified for a balaclava-clad man, who surprised her inside the family’s palatial home in the exclusive harbourside suburb about 2.30 pm, after police found the fingerprints. A number of prints were found and none belong to Miss

Australian teenager Madeleine Pulver spent hours with a fake bomb attached to her. Pulver, a police source said. Police said they would begin to canvass some of Sydney’s most prestigious schools, including students from Sydney Church of England Boys Grammar

School, known as Shore. The extortion letter attached to the hoax bomb included excerpts from James Clavell’s 1966 Asian crime thriller, Tai-Pan, which was on Shore’s HSC suggested reading list last year. Miss Pulver, 18, is in Year 12 at Wenona, located in North Sydney, not far from Shore. Weekend reports revealed a patron at Mosman’s Buena Vista Hotel was acting anxiously last Wednesday afternoon. When police cars sped past the hotel to the Pulver home, the man reportedly became stressed and ran out.

Uproar over Indian Games India’s calamitous Commonwealth Games last year cost 15 times initial estimates, running up a $US4.1 billion (B122 billion) bill against a $US270 million (B8 billion) first budget, the country’s auditor has found. A new report to Parliament said preparations for the Games were deeply corrupted, tainted by favouritism and ran hugely over budget. The report said a quarter of tickets went unsold and that

three times as many tickets were given away as at previous Games. The event made only US$38 million (B1.2 billion) in revenue. And the imbroglio over the Games – which were marred by delays, cost overruns and a bridge collapse – has caught up two of the country’s most senior politicians, with opposition parties turning on the office of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit.

The repor t found the Games boss, Suresh Kalmadi – who is now in jail facing a raft of corruption charges – was appointed by order of the Prime Minister’s office despite “serious objections” from others in government. “The modus operandi … was: inexplicable delays in decision-making, which put pressure on timelines and led to the creation of an artificial or consciously created sense of urgency,” the report said. www.thephuketnews.com

Over the top?

Plans for an overpass at the northern end of the bypass road in Phuket have raised concerns from local tourism officials who believe the lengthy construction period, air pollution from construction and the aesthetics of the finished project could be detrimental to Phuket’s image. It is ironic that officials have spoken out about concerns about pollution and disruption during the construction. In Patong and other areas around Phuket, hotels, resorts and other property developments are popping up regularly, with not a second thought for the environment. Now officials have decided to speak out about a planned overpass project that may actually have the ability to do some good for tourists and the people of Phuket. Claims by Sarayut Mallam, Vice President of the Phuket Tourist Association, that the overpass would be an “eyesore” and tourists wouldn’t expect to find such a development on a tropical island location is a bit over the top. Most tourists visiting Phuket know it is not all beaches and cocktails. They are aware Phuket is very mod-

Yellow and white stripes on the gutter: You are allowed to stop temporarily to let passengers go in or out of the vehicle but not to park and turn off your engine. Black and white stripes on the gutter: This marking is usually seen at road bridges, at islands in the middle of the road, or at other obstacles, serving only to warn motorists to be more careful as they drive past. Blue sign with a white arrow bending to the left: This sign is sometimes explained by the written words of “Turn Left With Caution” or “Turn Left When Safe”. Yellow sign allowing through traffic at a T-junction: At a T-junction when you are driving straight through, you may see this yellow sign. For example, at the ThepkrasattriBypass T-junction when coming from the airport and going straight to Phuket town on the far left lane, a sign in Thai says “Left lane through traffic, mind the car on your right”. It means that you can proceed straight on in the left-most lane even when the traffic light is red, while watching for cars turning in to join you from your right. Lines in the middle of the road: Median lines are painted yellow or white, indicating which authorities are responsible the roads. A long unbroken line of any colour prohibits crossing it to overtake, and fines can be levied for dangerous driving

Two parallel unbroken lines filled with oblique lines drawn across: As seen along the middle of much of the the multilaned Chao Fa West Rd, it provides a welcome space for a car or a motorcycle to pause before turning safely across on-coming traffic on the other side of the road. Yellow box with an X across: This marking in front of a soi or side street on the main road prohibits vehicles standing in the box when stopped in a traffic jam, to make room for veh icles to turn freely into these side streets from the on-coming side of

the road. Thai letters “จ ย ย” in white on the road surface: The letters are the abbreviation of the word motorcycle, meaning that only motorcycles can stand there to wait for the traffic light to change. Cars are not allowed to stop in the box and you can be fined for stopping there and blocking turning traffic.

Letters to the editor Pound dogs A life of suffering versus a quick and painless death, hmm, I really don’t understand Dr Sawai’s logic here. I’ve already adopted eight pets and I take care of all of my neighbourhood dogs. Why can’t the locals, many of whom have a lot more money than I’ll ever see in my lifetime, care enough to show these other sentient beings a modicum of respect? I’m sick of excuses. This is simply not a priority for the authorities. ‘Bill the Fish’

Government pound a ‘disgrace’ Blinking traffic lights: Sometimes late at night, instead of operating normally, traffic lights will simply blink. This does not mean they are broken. Most of the time they will flash red from the minor road side of the intersection. This means that if you drive from this way, you are supposed to slow down and give way to other cars. If you are faced with blinking yellow lights, it means you have right of way, but should still exercise caution when going through the intersection.

ern, with shopping malls, restaurants, and high-rise hotels. Surely tourists would be pleased to find a functional structure that provides free flowing traffic and less congestion, allowing them to begin their vacation smoothly. The concrete overpass would be no more damaging to Phuket’s tourism image than crazy rush hour traffic, or the number of fatal road accidents that occur so regularly here, either involving tourists, or happening within their view. If the tourism authorities were really concerned about tourists, they would be moving faster to upgrade the route to Patong. The Patong Hill is dangerous, narrow and overcrowded with traffic and in many other countries considered an unacceptable route. Then there’s the busy road south from the bypass road to Chalong, which is a nightmare drive for both commuters from the area, as well as tourists heading south to escape the busy western beaches. These two routes should be the priority. Although if the same engineers behind the Patong Hill are behind this overpass project, it could be years, if at all, before it comes to fruition.

This dog pound has been a disgrace since the start. The way it does not work is so inhumane. When it’s too expensive, then they just want private organisations to take over the whole deal and pay the cost. Phuket is a rich island,

visited by millions of tourists every year. They can charge every single tourist B300 to have enough money to pay for this dog jail. It is just too easy to say that private organisations can take over. I know what that means – foreigners paying. Wendie Andersen

Tuk-tuk drivers There are many good and bad tuk-tuk drivers but only a meter and a zero no-fault insurance policy on all tuk-tuks can cure this problem. Also very profitable for insurance companies to protect tourists from accidents and protect the tuk-tuk drivers. This would help a lot. Of course many tourists come here with bad intention and cause problems. One tuk-tuk driver returned $US700 (B21,000) I left in his cab today. Many are good people who have to deal with drunken idiots. Kevin Wise

Random View Photographer Alasdair Forbes says this Random View photo of the macaque monkey (Macaca) was taken in the mangroves next to the Bang Rong Pier, in Tambon Pa Khlok. “This young fella was having a nap after a couple of hard hours cadging food from tourists, proving that crab-eating macaques don’t just eat crabs. In fact, they’ll eat just about anything. “Don’t tease, them, though. They have big teeth which they’ll readily use when irritated. And don’t try to get them to feed from your hand.

They just might take your hand, too,” he says. There are 22 species of these widespread primates that can be found from Japan to Afghanistan. Thais love them as the army that helps Hanuman, the white monkey, to do good in the Ramayana, the Sankrit epic story that still occupies a central place in Thai culture. MAKING ART Kittipong Suriyathongchuen For this year’s Mother’s Day and the birthday of HM Queen Sirikit on August 12, well-known sculptor Kittipong is showing a series of 13 small (30cm) fibreglass sculptures in the exhibition “The Memories of Mom” in Bangkok. True to his usual style of the opulent and fully-rounded females, reminiscent always of the art of Columbian artist Fernando Botero, his mother image is brimful of goodness and motherly love. The ideal mother captured here is both a timely reminder and celebration of mothers everywhere, of their sacrifice and the hard work of rearing children. In these sculptures, she is peacefully contented about what she has accomplished, and has plenty more to give. She sits back now to receive back some rewards, in terms of love and respect, from her toddlers who are obviously thriving in her care. The show is at the Teeoli Gallery @72 Ekamai until August 14.

ARTEYE There is good humour shown here by workers of the Wongpanit Recycle Separation Plant in Kathu, who may be wanting to share an interpretation of our transient life. In the jumble of tools, furniture and other knick-knacks that supported daily living, now discarded as useless, is this picture of devoted love. Devoted but maybe not enduring? The perfect TV soap-opera love between good-looking couples also has to take its place on the junk heap.

Many visual artists now use found objects to create art. Objects carry their own both obvious and hidden meanings, and can act as neat symbols for other concepts. What else might this impromtu creation say then? Is this as the sum of a life? All these material things were needed to lead a happy life. What about deeper spiritual aspect? Did we manage to tap into that at all, behind our surface trappings of a busy existence?

raw me a cartoon,” Sirintra Yayee once told her friend in class. “Can you teach me how to draw? I want to be a good artist like you.” Ms Sirintra’s life story is one of humble origins. She loved having fun with her friends, had dreams of romance, and relished in the beauty of her adolescent years. She was unashamedly normal. Whenever Ms Sirintra laughed, she would attract attention as her shrill voice burst out from behind her glossy lips. Her thick eyebrows would tilt slightly, her tanned body shaking violently with joy. “I can’t help it,” she always said when her friend commented about her unique laugh. But despite her ordinary upbringing in Kamala, Ms

Grandpa’s yarns Sirintra was no ordinary girl – at least not according to Malaysia’s Kedah Historical Society. About a decade ago they identified her as a seventhgeneration descendant of the ‘white-blooded lady’, Mahsuri – a princess at the centre of a tragic legend from the Malaysian island of Langkawi during the 18th century. Mahsuri, a woman of Thai origin, was accused of having an affair with a young man while her husband, the Prince of Langkawi, was away fighting a war. The wife of the village chief was apparently jealous of Mahsuri’s beauty, and so spread rumours of her adultery which eventu-

ally prompted villagers to openly accuse her of the crime, which was punishable by death. Before she was executed, Mahsuri told villagers her blood would turn white if she was innocent. She was then stabbed in the throat, and legend has it white blood spilled from her wound. With her last breath, she cursed Langkawi to endure seven generations of misfortune. In the decades that followed, Langkawi suffered from repeated crop failure and several invasions from the Siamese, encouraging locals to believe in the curse. Closer to the present day, and with the seventh generation coming to pass, it was decided to locate Mahsuri’s descendent. With her family known to have moved to Phuket, Ms Sirin-

tra was eventually tracked down and identified as that seventh descendent. She received a warm welcome from Langkawi residents – who have recently experienced an upturn in fortunes as tourism brought new found wealth – and was offered a place there as the descendant of the Langkawi princess. However, she declined, choosing instead to continue living on Phuket. Her life seems to have gone somewhat in reverse, from a life of reality in her early days to one of fantasy and mythology in her adolescence and early adulthood. Now 26, she is married and has resumed a relatively normal existence. But her life will not ever be the same again after being in the spotlight and part of history.

He places the heavy bucket on the car park cement, pushes a plastic cup into the full honeycomb with dead bees still stuck to them, and the cup fills quickly with fragrant golden honey. He carefully pours it into an empty bottle. From the north east, Somsuan says he collected these

Bursting at the seams with dressmaking enthusiasm

Dressmaker Montri Meelorm is ready to please his next customer, and the next, and the next …

Montri Meelorm is a voluble talker and can tell you, both in Thai and good English, about the previous jobs he had before settling on dressmaking. At his Montri Thai Silk shop in Tesco Lotus, he remembers starting as an office boy in a share-trading room, then wheeled and dealed as a stockbroker for a while. Then he worked in a series of restaurants in Phuket for 10 years, all the while learning other new skills, as was his wont. Some 10 years ago, he decided on a career change to dressmaking, and studied for a year at the famous Kornsiam Fashion Design Institute in Bangkok. He started working in the hurlyburly of Patong but found that he could not compete with Indian tailors and their marketing technique of physically “pulling their customers into their shops” plus their discounting. Now happy and busy in his shop, surrounded on all sides by glowing bundles of colourful silks and finelyfinished dresses, he caters only to women customers, with 99 per cent being Thai.

He employs three seamstresses who work on the sewing machines all day as, he says, a high volume of business is essential in this shop, to cover the high rent and the wages. Mr Montri says the secret is to maintain quality work at competitive prices. A lot of his business comes from the recommendations of satisfied customers, including many who are high up in Phuket society. People see the dresses these highprofile customers wear to functions and want to have something similar, he says. The other key to success is his choice of the materials and designs that are tailor-made to both the personality of the customer and purpose of the dress being ordered. A customer may choose a basic design from the book and he will then suggest improvements. Most of his silks have to come from Bangkok, bought on his onceor twice-yearly buying trip to that hub of fine Thai textiles. Silk used to be woven in the north around Chiang Mai but is now made almost exclusively in small factories and homes in the northeast of Thailand. –Norachai Thavisin

The variety of good food, friendly people, the climate, beautiful white sandy beaches, and the overall “sabai, sabai” feeling. I just love my life here! How long have you lived on the island and why did you move here? I have lived in Phuket for 15 years. I moved here just after graduating from Hotel Management School. I followed my heart (ie. a man) who left Switzerland to move www.thephuketnews.com

to Phuket, and had to make the biggest decision of my life to follow him! I am now happilymarried to the guy and have two wonderful kids, both born in Phuket. Kind of destiny!

What hobbies or sports are you interested in? I love painting very much, it relaxes me. Also bodyboarding on the beach with the big waves is so much fun. I used to snowboard in Switzerland, and I wish I could do surfing in Phuket or learn kiteboarding, as it seems really cool. Favourite food or dish? I am gifted being in Phuket Town – you can get so many choices of really good local food. However, I would say chicken with chilli and basil leaves. Khun Noi, the lady I often go to for lunch, always smiles at me when I arrive and immediately says: “Pad ka prow gai, mai?” What kind of music are you into? I love all kinds of music. I am so happy with the great new radio stations like 91.5 or

90.5! Both are really nice to listen to while you are stuck in a busy Phuket traffic jam, and the variety is great!

What is the best tip you have for people moving to Phuket? Forget how it is in your own country and open your mind to your host country. Take a mai pen rai (no worries) approach to stay cool (not always easy!). Learn basic Thai language – this is the least you can do for living on such a wonderful island. We are lucky to be here and of course it is not easy working every day but tell me, where else is that easy? What is the funniest thing that has happened to you while living on the island? So many funny stories! One time I was interviewing a young guy for a bartender position for my restaurant and asked him about classic cocktails to test his overall knowledge. I asked him: “Could you give me the recipe of a Bloody Mary?” And he answered: “Oh no I am not

Exposed married yet,” with a big smile on his face. Just loved it!

The person you admire the most and why? My lovely Mum who raised me, my brother and two sisters with a real positive and open-minded spirit based on respect toward others, and lots of support. She is now 65 years old, still beautiful and looks 10 years younger! I still don’t know how she does it. Is there anything you don’t like about living here? Sometimes the negative way some expatriates doing business here talk about Thailand or Thai people makes me very uncomfortable. We do not need to agree on everything while living and working here. It is a true cultural exchange and surely a big challenge. However, the choice is yours whether to stay or not. Favourite place on the island, and why? I love the overall island but where I feel really good and where I spend most of my time due to work is surely

The real culture of Phuket is just there with the food and the Hokkien influence, the Baba culture, the architecture, and lots of local artists doing original paintings for a change. My neighbours speak local Thai with me and are nice,

friendly and helpful. I have never regretted taking the big challenge of opening a restaurant in Phuket Town five years ago. I hope people will be curious and adventurous enough to see Phuket Town as an option for dinner or shopping since there are many gems to discover still.

VILLAGE OF THE WEEK 15

On the surface, Baan Gett-Ho looks like any other village in Phuket.

Kanit Jamnongpakdee, Vice President of the Baan Gett-Ho Community Fund Office, left, with Chuchart Chantanantarat, Community Leader and President of the Community Fund.

Strong community ties T

he tight knit community of Baan Gett-Ho is only a few minutes away from Phuket Town. You might drive past the area not knowing this place has such effective management and very strong community values. Community leader Chuchart Chantanantarat explains: “Since we are under the governance of Kathu Municipality, we are not called a village but referred to as a community. But we are a village in every sense.” This community, with 400 households and a total population of 1,875, has seen many developments over the years, and many projects have eventuated.

The community centre.

Village

of the week

Mr Chuchart says it is imperative for a small community in a highly-competitive and built up area like Phuket to try and maintain their community values. “So many things have changed these days. People have to get up early to go to work and come back home late at night. That leaves them no time to think of things other than how to make ends meet. But as a community, it is necessary that we create a place where members of the community feel they are not living alone. Therefore we try

to put in place many projects and development ideas and invite community members to join us.” Baan Gett-Ho has their own Community Fund Office, thanks to money administered from the central government. This office acts like a bank that can provide community loans, to a total of B11 million, although with a higher interest rate of 3 per cent. Insurance is also available, plus funeral support for community members. The office has even won a prize from the Governor of Phuket for its management. The Community Fund Office also serves as a learning centre where one corner of the building is set up with

bookshelves and sofas for people to come in and read. The variety of books range from agriculture and general interest, to management and accounting handbooks for graduate students. Mr Chuchart says people in the community know if they need any kind of help, financial or otherwise, they can come to the centre. The community centre committee also decided to convert a room at Baan Gett-Ho School into a fully-functioning community fitness centre, complete with equipment like treadmills, cross-trainers, bikes and weight machines. “It is important to be healthy. Community members and school children can use this fitness centre and pay a very small fee but we don’t ask them to pay an exact amount – they can give us any rate of fee they like,” Mr Chuchart says. The community has big plans for the future, he says. Included in that is the development of an area called the Old Liquor House, which used to be a liquor storage area. “Last week we had a big cleaning day around the Old Liquor House. We plan to make this into a community recreational area. There is a lake at the back, leftover from years of mining as the area was rich in tin. We want to build running tracks around the lake, and we have plans to build a floating market and a cultural centre. Here, people can come and experience Phuket’s old style

Treadmills in the community centre help encourage a healthy lifestyle.

A main stage will be set up for traditional shows and performances. It is important to create a community where people can live in and feel safe in, Mr Chuchart says. “Big city life is already

difficult. People have to work harder and longer hours to make a living, so when they come back to their homes, to their community, they should be able to feel that it is their home.” Getting there: Head west from Central Festival toward Kathu. Turn right at the first main set of lights and the village is on the left. It is next door to a kindergarten. –Kazira Hanshanasattru www.thephuketnews.com

Hacker’s best aid: stupidity Hackers at DefCon have long understood that there is no patch for human stupidity. Skills honed by software renegades at the renowned hacker gathering that ended Sunday included the art of talking workers into revealing information that can be used to crack into computer networks. A “Schmooze Strikes Back” contest challenged hackers to test their “social engineering” skills on companies such as Apple, Oracle, Symantec, and Walmart. The contest debuted at the annual DefCon gathering in Las Vegas last year. “The results are worse than they were last year,” said Chris Hadnagy, a social engineering specialist running the contest. “From what we found, we would own everyone on of these companies.” Hackers were able to talk workers at various companies into disclosing anything from the versions of software used in networks to who provided cafeteria food service. Knowing specifics about software in company computers lets hackers figure out

weaknesses to exploit, and sharing operational information could enable someone intent on corporate espionage to sneak into facilities. The most effective ruses involved calling companies and posing as a potential customer out to be reassured about the safety of doing business together, according to Hadnagy. Pretending to be calling from another department in a company, or a remote technical support team, proved to be another effective tactic for hackers. Retail operations were consistently harder targets, possibly because they are more accustomed to interacting with customers, according to Hadnagy. “Women seemed to be more security conscious,” he said of the contest findings, which will be published in a report later this year. “We call back and get a guy on the phone and we get everything we want,” continued Hadnagy, who runs the social-engineer.org website. –AFP

Crackdown on ‘van’ modifications

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has stepped up its control of minibuses, or vans as they are called in Thailand, in a bid to prevent improper modifications to their seating for accommodating more passengers than allowed. DLT Deputy DirectorGeneral Asathai Rattanadilok Na Phuket indicated that since more people were using public vans in their daily commuting, many van operators had opted to modify their vehicles by adding extra seats, which was against the law, in order to be able to transport more passengers at one time. Some vans even allow passengers to stand when there are vacant seats. The DLT has therefore already ordered more stringent watch over public vans on the road, especially within Bangkok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Nayok, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri and Sa Kaeo, where vans are a popular means of traveling. Those

found with illegal adjustments on their vehicles will be subject to penalties. Based on the DLT’s survey during January-July this year, 749 vans out of 7,772 samples were not abiding by the department’s regulation. 146 cases involved the driver’s failure to carry a licence and bad manner while 140 cases stemmed from changes of route without permission. Both violations bear a penalty of not more than B5,000 in fine. Some 134 vans faced a fine of not more than B50,000 for not displaying details of the route and the fare rate while another 113 faced a fine of not more than B5,000 for modifying the vehicle, including adding more seats. Mr Asathai insisted that all violators would be dealt with “sternly” from now on. He also encouraged van passengers to report reckless drivers to Hotline 1584, which is manned around the clock. –NNT

Fernandez in share swap deal with MAS Trading in the shares of flag carrier Malaysia Airlines and upstart budget airline AirAsia was suspended on Monday, the Malaysian stock exchange said, following reports of a share-swap plan. Local media reports have said the two sides had stuck a deal under which a company controlled by Malaysia-based AirAsia’s flamboyant boss Tony Fernandes would take 20 per cent of the equity in its loss-making rival. The share suspension was made at the request of the companies, the Malaysian stock market said, without offering any other details. The deal between fast-growing no-frills carrier AirAsia and ailing Malaysia Airlines was aimed at saving the national flag carrier, reports have said. It would allow Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia to combine their flight frequencies and destinations and increase their bargaining power with airports and aircraft makers, reports said. Both sides have declined

However, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund which owns about 70 per cent of the flag carrier, said it would maintain its position as the single largest shareholder in MAS. Under the deal, Khazanah would get a stake in AirAsia,

while Tune Air Sdn Bhd, which owns 26 per cent of the budget carrier, would get the Malaysia Airlines stake. Tune Air is headed by Fernandes and another partner. Malaysia Airlines chairman Mohamed Munir Abdul Majid left the company last month as it restructures its top team in a bid to return to profit. It posted a first-quarter net

loss due to rising fuel prices and a strengthening ringgit, the national currency. AirAsia, however, recorded a first-quarter profit. Fernandes took over the struggling formerly government-linked company in 2001 and it has expanded rapidly under his leadership. It is now Southeast Asia’s largest budget carrier. – AFP

B300 wage ‘will hit car parts companies’ Hundreds of automotive factories will be immediately and heavily affected by the Pheu Thai government’s proposed rise in daily minimum wage to B300 per day, according to Thavorn Chalassathien, spokesman for the Thai Autoparts Manufacturers Association.

Of the total 2,000 auto spare parts factories countrywide, about 1,000 are small and medium-sized. The entire industry currently employs a workforce of over half a million. With the cost of production is now increasing, Mr Thavorn said the price of automotive

spare parts will be adjusted upwards by 10-15 per cent. The spokesman advised the government to support entrepreneurs through supporting cost reductions such as electricity bills, while urging it to consider drafting a ministerial regulation granting businesses a three-year

exemption from contributing to social security funds. Mr Thavorn also said that the planned lowering of the corporate profit tax from 30 to 23 per cent would cost the state as much as B106 billion in revenue, and should be rethought. –MCOT

US downgrading ‘will have no effect on Asia – yet’ International ratings agency Standard & Poor’s on Monday said its US credit rating downgrade will have no immediate impact on Asia-Pacific sovereign ratings, though it could have negative consequences longer-term. The agency on Friday cut the credit rating for US Treasury bonds for the first time ever from AAA to AA+, pointing to deep divisions in Washington over the country’s long-term fiscal standing. The decision by S&P sparked scathing criticism from US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. “I think S&P has shown really terrible judgement and they’ve handled themselves poorly,” Geithner said in an interview with NBC News and CNBC. “They have shown a stunning lack of knowledge about basic US fiscal budget math, and I think they came to exactly the wrong conclusion. “There is no risk the US would never meet its obligations. We’ve got some challenge ahead of us, but we’ll be able to work through the challenges. We’ll get through this.” Barclays Capital said in a

report that it could see the S&P announcement coming. “The announcement was not really a surprise because S&P had been very clear about what it wanted to see in order for the US to maintain its AAA rating, and the agreement reached last week had not met those criteria. “To many observers, it was really a question of when it would happen rather than whether it would, though probably few expected it to be quite so soon.” S&P defended its view. In a statement issued in Australia it said, “The US rating change, together with the weakening sovereign creditworthiness in Europe, does point to an increasingly uncertain and challenging environment ahead. “Uncertainties in the global financial market and weakened prospects in the developed economies have further undermined confidence. “The potential longer-term consequences of a weaker financing environment, slower growth, and higher risk aversion are negative factors for Asia-Pacific sovereign ratings.” But the statement added, “There is no immediate im-

Software to save body scan blushes The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has added software to its full body scanners that should save the blushes of travellers by showing “a generic outline of a person” whilst still allowing the detection of dangerous items. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Las Vegas McCarran International and Ronald Reagan Washington National airports tested the new software in February this year. The TSA will begin installing it on its millimetre-wave body-scanning units at airports around the US in the coming months. “Our top priority is the safety of the travelling public, and the TSA constantly strives to explore and implement new technologies that enhance security and [yet also] strengthen privacy protection for the travelling public,” TSA administrator John Pistole said. Club Andaman gets new look, new name

Behind high walls, the villa has an 11-metre pool.

A labour of love

They say there is no such thing as the perfect house. Everyone wants something a little different, but if you put all those requests together – privacy, ambience, status, greenery, spaciousness, stylish décor – then you begin to paint a picture of what that dream house may look like. Not only did the owners of this particular property paint that picture; they spent considerable time and money on it. In the Sai Yuan area of southern Phuket, the well-paved road takes a turn into a small cul-de-sac. You are nearer the sea now and a large island fills the horizon. Behind high walls rolling

Next to this is the fitted black marble kitchen with recessed double-door fridge, and then the open-plan lounge and dining area, where ceiling fans silently whirl to stir the lazy sea breezes, giving the space a relaxed atmosphere looking over the sunny garden terrace. The views from upstairs are all of trees in subtle shades of olive and crimson. Slate floors under bare feet give a feeling

of ancient solidity, yet this property is barely five years old. Integral air-con helps keep the walls free from mechanical clutter. One of Phuket’s oldest resorts, the Club Andaman Beach Resort in Patong – which traces its roots back to a family-run bungalow resort more than 30 years ago – is set to re-open in December as the Andaman Embrace Resort & Spa, after a comprehensive remake. Major renovations are being made to the resort, with the entire look being changed to echo the Sino-Portuguese architecture of old Phuket Town. This is the second major

resort to be given the SinoPortuguese look, the other being the Centara Grand at the northern end of Karon Beach. The hotel’s interior has been redesigned and the 200 guest rooms will be refurbished to give the resort an “entirely new contemporary Sino-colonial look”, say the resort’s owners, Limsup Grand Co. A 570-sqm swimming pool will be built, along with an independently-operated spa and a new restaurant.

Popular features, such as the resort’s tropical garden dotted with 18 “lotus cottages” surrounding an ornamental pond, remain. However, they too will be completely revamped to fit the Sino-Portuguese architectural theme. The rebranded resort will be operated by the owners. The seven-storey hotel building and surrounding gardens form one of the largest resort properties on Patong’s beachfront.

Music everywhere HomeTech by Ben Hobbs Advertorial Audio systems that pipe music throughout your home used to be thought of as extravagant. Nowadays, however, more and more homeowners are looking at building multi-room audio into their homes. These systems are also sometimes referred to as “whole home audio” or “distributed audio” systems. Typically, speakers in the ceiling are used through most of the home, to make the audio system inconspicuous. In outdoor areas, weatherproof speakers come in a variety of shapes, from conventionallooking wall-mounted ones through to speakers cunningly disguised as rocks. For that extra touch, underwater speakers can be built into the swimming pool, providing crystal-clear sound underwater. These speakers, strategically dotted around the home, allow you to listen to your favourite music anywhere you want to. record 6 Bookings open for Amonths for made Hospitality Show films in Thailand

Tourists ‘to hit 19.5m this year’ The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) has projected that the number of visitors from overseas will surpass 19.5 million this year, bringing projected earnings from tourism to B770 billion. The FPO indicated that around 1.49 million foreign tourists came to Thailand in June 2011, which was an increase of 53.9 per cent over the same month last year, showing that tourism numbers have well and truly recovered since the global financial crisis of 2008. The figure for the first half of this year totalled

9.7 million people, a rise of 28.1 per cent compared with the first half of 2010. Much of the rise came from Asian markets, especially north-east Asia and Asean. The FPO pointed out that foreign travellers play an important role in the promotion of the Thai economy. Provided that the political situation remains calm and that there are no major natural disasters, the number of foreign visitors this year could reach 19.5 million, a massive expansion of 22.7 per cent, it predicted. –NNT

New yachts launch at Pimex 2012 Several major Eu ropean luxury yachting brands will be launching new models at the Phuket International Boat Show (Pimex), to be held at the Royal Phuket Marina from March 29 to April 1 next year, organiser Andy Dowden has announced. The show “will see an unprecedented number of boats on display, the highest quality of marine products ever to be seen at an Asian show, with a significant list of new models being premiered”, he added. Making its first boat show appearance anywhere in the

world will be the new Princess 78MY, while sister models, the Princess P60, P72MY and V52 will be making their first appearances in Asia. Another first in Asia will be Sunseeker’s Manhattan 73, featuring the revolutionary Joystick Manoeuvring System and carbon fiber construction Mr Dowden predicted the 2012 show “will set new records for the display of luxury yachts, marine lifestyle products, charter vessels and luxury goods”. As many as 60 yachts are expected to take berths in the water for the show.

Bookings are now being accepted for the second Asian Hospitality and Travel Show, which takes place in the Royal Phuket Marina’s exhibition hall on November 18 to 20. After just three weeks of promotion more than a third of the exhibition hall space is already sold out. Co-sponsors for the food and beverage have been secured and a very chic venue booked for the “Thankyou Party” on November 19, which is expected to attract some 300 hospitality and travel professionals from Thailand and around the world. The three-day show is aimed at bringing sellers and buyers together through professionally-coordinated business appointments. The organisers, Events Thailand, will provide flights and accommodation for buyers from around Asia who specialise in the Thai market, with the focus on the weddings and honeymoons markets. More than 100 exhibitors from Phuket and other parts of Thailand are expected to take booth space. These exhibitors will include hotels, restaurants, travel organisations, media, event organisers and suppliers to the hospitality industry. Some 5,000 visitors, mostly from the hospitality and travel industries, are expected to come to the show.

Security will be tight at the show, as this shot from last year’s expo demonstrates. The first day will be for trade buyers only and the pre-arranged appointments between buyers and sellers will take place on this day, with the fololowing two days alos open to the public. Apart from viewing products and services exhibited, buyers will be able to take part in network events organised by Events Thailand and there will be seminars conducted by leading figures in the hospitality and travel industries. A “Job Club” will allow employers to see the resumés of people looking for jobs and, in some cases, interview them. Competitions and demonstrations will include “Best Thai Dish” and “Best West-

ern Dish” contests for chefs; bartender and cocktail-mixing contests, a wine connoisseur competition and a Barista competition in coordination with co-sponsors BB&B Co, the Andaman Wine Club of Phuket, Farang Food and Horeca Supply. There will also be lucky draws featuring prizes of products and services offered by sponsors and exhibitors, including free hotel stays, meals and wine vouchers. A highlight of the show will be the Thanks Party on November 19 at the unique Bliss Beach Club, with more than 300 hospitality and travel professional expected to attend. The first Asian Hospitality and Travel Show drew applause from exhibitors. Bart Duykers, MD of BB&B Wines and the Andaman Wine Club in Phuket, remarked, “Excellent show! Please book a double booth for us next year.” Vincent Tabuteau, MD of Asia Marine Thailand, agreed, describing it as “a great show where we got excellent contacts with buyers from different countries”. Thailand earned a record B770 million from film shoots in Thai locations during the first half of the year, says the Film Office Department. The department reported that foreign firms shot 355 films, documentaries, advertising spots, television episodes and music videos in Thailand, between the beginning of the year and the end of June, generating B770 million in revenue compared with 279 productions and B597 million in the same period last year. During the period, foreign productions included 108 documentaries, 158 commercials, 13 films, 54 television programmes, and 22 music video productions. European film makers led the pack with 69 productions followed by 64 from Japan, 48 from India, 38 from S Korea, 18 from China and 16 each from Hong Kong and the US. Part of the success in attracting film crews is attributed to the decision at the end of last year to waive permit fees for foreign film makers wanting to shoot productions on state property. The zero fees are valid until the end of this year apart from Parks Department sites, where the exemption expires on December 1.

Outrigger expands The 26-hectare Outrigger Laguna Phuket Resort and Villas has opened 19 new self-contained suites. The new suites are in a standalone, mountain-view area of the property with its own pool, pool bar, gym, and allday restaurant, called Panache. 20 WEIRD WORLD

THE BIG LIST Attention seekers – a collection of memorable publicity stunts

Extreme Scrabble Fans of the board game Scrabble mobilised to celebrate the brand’s 60th anniversary. PR at the company compiled (and presumably staged) various snaps of extreme scrabble play including shots of sky divers who jumped from a plane 13,000ft over Florida. Paying peanuts London student Mark McGowan pushed a peanut, using only his nose, across London in protest of his student debt. The two week journey across London in September 2003 drew massive media interest and culminated with McGowan delivering the nut to then Prime Minister Tony Blair, asking him to accept it as payment for his debt. Erectile dysfunction Virgin Airlines took a swipe at the late-running, British Airways sponsored Millennium Wheel project in London by flying a blimp over the site carrying the message “BA can’t get it up”. Sticky situation In November 2008 an engineering student spent the day glued to a billboard in East London for a book PR stunt. ‘Daring’ Dave Lions agreed to promote This Diary Will Change Your Life to help pay his way through university. New kid on the block The National Railway Museum in the UK hired a 6-year-old as its “director of fun”. Six-year-old Sam Pointon wrote to the National Rail Museum and applied to replace retiring director Andrew Scott. In his application Sam wrote: “I have an electric train track. I am good on my train track. I can control two trains at once.” Bosses were so taken with his enthusiasm they offered him the role. Up in flames In 1994, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, the two members of the acid house band The KLF, burned one million British pounds (B49 million) on the Scottish island of Jura and captured the event on film. Drummond and Cauty have said it was about controlling money instead of it being in control of us. In reality it probably earned them a million pounds worth of publicity. Open your eyes! Piggybacking the media frenzy of Euro 2004, British supermarket chain Asda offered free eye tests to Swiss citizens. The stunt responded to a controversial decision of Swiss referee Urs Meier who disallowed a late goal, terminating England’s future in the tournament. he mayor of Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, has added new meaning to the fight against crime. He was filmed using an armoured vehicle to crush a car parked illegally in a bicycle lane. “That’s what will happen if you park your car illegally,” Mayor Arturas Zuokas, an avid cyclist, says in a clip posted on the Vilnius City website. In the video, Mr Zuokas ticks off the car’s owner, sweeps up the broken glass from the wreckage and then hops on a bicycle and rides off – a scenario many cyclists would relish. “You have to have a sense of humour in my line of work and I thought this would be a way of drawing attention to the fact that the city intends to be proactive in its fight against illegal parking,’’ he said.

Because writing a parking ticket just doesn’t cut it in this town. Illegal parking is not a big problem in the city, but in its central streets it is strictly prohibited. The stunt was set up by frustrated members of the

mayor's office after they received hundreds of complaints, especially from cyclists, saying that parked cars have been blocking their bike lanes. The money shot moment

is when the owner of the car dressed in a pimp-esque white blazer and gold chain comes out and confronts Mayor Zuokas, with... wait for it... a friendly handshake.

Stoned wallabies – part House of a sinister alien plot? becomes toilet

They may be a little spaced out, but the culprits behind a spate of crop circles in Australia are far from being alien. Wallabies are reportedly eating opium poppies and creating crop circles as they hop around “as high as a kite”, a government official has said. Lara Giddings, the attorney general for the island state of Tasmania, said the kangaroolike marsupials were getting into poppy fields grown for medicine. She was reporting to a parliamentary hearing on security for poppy crops. Australia supplies about 50 per cent of the world’s legally-grown opium used to make morphine and other painkillers. “The one interesting bit

Ms Giddings told the hearing. “Then they crash,” she added. “We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high.”

A homeowner in south-east London has kicked up a stink after the local authority put up a sign directing people to his house to use the toilet. The man had to turn crosslegged people away after the mix-up, which followed the closure of the local council’s public toilets. Officials erected signs listing four local businesses opening their facilities to non-customers, but mistakenly put the address 2a Station Square as that of Cafe Maz when, in fact, it refers to the flat above the eaterie. The miffed resident swiftly alerted local media to the oversight and the sign has since been corrected from ‘2a’ to ‘2’ – the correct address of Cafe Maz.

3 small eggplants (purple) 120gm green pepper 50ml of white wine 20gm sweet basil

Polenta: 200gm polenta 120gm shaved parmesan (the better the quality the better the taste)

80gm finely diced shallot (small red onions) 500ml milk 75gm butter

Method:

Heat the milk to just below boiling and then stir in the polenta continuously stirring until thickened (about 20 mins) then add butter, parmesan, shallots, and half of your finely chopped sweet basil. When all melted and smooth, season with salt and pepper and press into a greased flat tray and let cool. Set in the fridge and cut into triangular wedges in preparation for grilling when ready.

Chef Weerawat Chottantikul.

Andaman Rainbow Lobster Chef Weerawat Chottantikul, of The Kee Restaurant. Ingredients: 1 whole Phuket lobster (700 gm) Tuna loin steak 150 gm (chopped into bite-sized cubes) Red, yellow and green peppers, lemon juice, yoghurt, pernod (50gms) red chilli, fresh honey, red curry paste, fresh cream, coriander, white wine (50gms), lobster stock (200gms), butter, teriyaki sauce (50gms), salt, pepper.

Method:

Cut the lobster then marinate with white wine, lemon juice and black pepper. Cook on a hot plate with a small amount of butter until cooked. Cut the tuna loin into pieces and marinate with teriyaki sauce and pernod. Put on a bamboo skewer along with red, yellow and green pepper pieces. Cook on a grill. Put lobster stock in a pot and cook along with salt, pepper, fresh cream and white wine until thick. In a separate bowl, create raita sauce using yoghurt, red chilli, fresh honey, red curry paste, lemon juice and coriander until you reach desired taste. Mix together and serve with lobster and tuna kebab.

Napoli sauce:

250gm of fresh tomato (very ripe tomatoes have the best flavour)

60gm shallots 20gm garlic 20gm sweet basil

Method:

Grilled White Snapper with Galangal.

Cut a star shape into the top of the tomatoes and cut out the stems. Blanch the tomatoes in boiling water for 20 seconds then plunge into ice water – this makes the tomato easy to skin. Once skinned chop roughly. Chop onions roughly and heat a little cooking oil and fry shallots and garlic, add the tomatoes, and bring to a simmer for about 1 hour or until soft. Add basil and season. If a little bitter add a small amount of sugar to counteract. Season your vegetables and mix with garlic and vegetable oil, rub the Cajun spices into the salmon cutlets and start to heat your pan. In another small saucepan add white wine with a pinch of chopped basil. Add the napoli sauce. Set aside, then fry vegetables until golden brown. In the same pan fry the salmon (preferably medium or to your liking) and fry the polenta until it has a golden crust. Arrange the vegetables in a fan shape and nestle the salmon on top. Pour over the sauce and serve.

MUSIC REVIEW

FILM REVIEW Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The Magician King

Lev Grossman Viking Adult, 416 pages The second volume in Lev Grossman’s celebrated series, Quentin, Eliot, Janet, and Julia are now the High Kings and Queens of Fillory, a fantastic realm not unlike Narnia, where they pass their days “deliquescing atom by atom amid a riot of luxury”. To ease his royal boredom, Quentin embarks on a quest with Julia. Despite his romantic visions of heroic feats and easy accolades, the quest goes horribly awry, and they find themselves back in the depressingly real world of Chesterton, Massachusetts. With the help of seedy underground magicians, a dragon, and a young boy named Thomas, they undertake a desperate journey back to Fillory. The Magician King is a triumphant homage to modern fantasy writing, and a must-read for grown-up fans of Narnia and Harry Potter.

Dark Fiber

Fibrate Legend Music Phuket Phuket based indie-disco band Dark Fiber have unleashed their retro brand of disco-rock on the world with the release of their debut album Fibrate. The album’s sonic character takes you back to a period when life was a lot less complex and disco ruled the airwaves and dance floors. Eight of the nine tracks on Fibrate were penned by ex-South African producer/ composer Gary Crause (best known for managing Toxic Shame) and English composer/musician/recording engineer Rob Cooke. Fronted by the charismatic BB Queen, Dark Fiber’s music is uplifting and inspirational with the odd twist and turn. The album was recorded entirely at Legend Music Phuket.

Run Time: 105 minutes Rating: G The risk with creating intelligent apes is that they may end up being smarter than you – and if there’s only one problem with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it’s that its primate cast are significantly smarter than the movie they’re in. But before terrifying visions of Tim Burton’s failed 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes appear in your mind, relax – there is not a single rubber mask, nor Mark Wahlberg, in sight. Director Rupert Wyatt has instead delivered a remarkably plausible take on the origin story of the science fiction classic, though has made a seemingly conscious decision to put both plot, and (human) character

development, on the backburner in place of showing off what can only be described as an evolutionary step forward in digital film-making. James Franco plays Wil Rodman, a scientist working on what he believes is a revolutionary cure for Alzheimers. He is, predictably, testing that drug – known at ALZ-112 – on chimpanzees. After his research suffers some untimely misfortune, he brings a baby chimp called Caesar home and raises it as his pet/son. The rest of the movie concerns the challenges facing Caesar as he is caught between two worlds – too much of an ape to fit in

with people, and too smart to spend his life eating bananas and scratching himself. While Franco does his best with a character who makes some radical personality shifts to help the story, and John Lithgow shines as his Alzheimers suffering father, it is Andy Serkis, the rubberfaced actor who provided the core performance for the digital Caesar, that deserves all the plaudits for an extraordinary performance – one that is heightened, not diminished by the motion capture process. It might even sound odd, obvious or even derogatory to say that Serkis and the digitally-rendered apes are the stars of this film, but it is none of those things. Rather its a recognition of all that is right with a film that within its first 15 minutes sees James Franco relegated to a bit-part player. It is not just the digital creations that shine – Wyatt also benefits from the cin-

ematography of Andrew Lesnie, who brings a painter’s understanding of natural light and colour to scenes that have no right to be beautiful, but are. Ultimately though there is little substance beneath this stunning veneer. In a way that makes it easier to simply admire the beauty, but somewhat dull and twodimensional human characters assist in dragging this down just enough to prevent it being an incredibly good film. With winking nods to, and carefully-established foundations for, the original films, The Rise of the Planet of the Apes will please old fans and win over a menagerie of new ones. It may not be the thinking person’s movie, but it is a genuine evolution in digital filmmaking, and that in itself is more than enough to make it worth seeing. –Dane Halpin

Tough and loyal: The Rottweiler In each column in this new series, international dog show judge Jackie Perry will look at a breed of dog – its physical features, its psychology and its needs, and give advice to those thinking of getting one.

A

s with many other breeds the actual history of the Rottweiler is based mainly on stories recounted through the ages but it would seem that the basic history does point to the facts related about it in European story books. It is said that during the Roman invasions of other European states, feeding of the army was quite some problem and necessitated the taking along of meat “on the hoof.” Beef herds followed along all the major routes over the Alps and through the St Gotthard Pass, in what is now Switzerland. Hard, rough country and to keep the cattle in order a dog of great strength

and with natural guarding instincts was required. The dogs then used were the ancestors of today’s Rottweiler. Many of these dogs settled in the Alps and eventually found their way into what is now Germany and to the market town of Rottweil in the southwest – hence the name. The Rottweiler is a large powerful breed and should be owned only by those who are strong enough both physically and mentally to control it. It requires a lot of exercise to keep it fit and also so that it does not get bored. It is an intelligent breed and needs that intelligence stimulating. As a guard for the house it is excellent. It normally adores its family and will guard them with its life. It can be a little suspicious of strangers and for this reason, as I stated above, should only

be with an owner who can control it. The dog is between 60 and 63.5 cm in height with the bitches being slightly shorter. The body is a little longer than the height. It has a well laidback shoulder with straight legs both front and rear. The whole body should be one of strength with good muscling throughout. The chest should be broad and deep and have well sprung-back ribs. The backline should be strong and straight. The neck is very powerful. The bone is large and the feet should be strong and round with compact arched toes. The tail is customarily docked at the second joint and set on just below the croup. The head is of medium length, broad between the ears. The forehead line is moderately arched when seen from the side. The cheeks are well muscled, the muzzle fairly deep and the same length as the skull. The nose is black with well

The Rottweiler is believed to be descended from herding dogs used by the Roman army. –Photo by Pedro Simoes developed nostrils. The eyes are medium-sized, almond-shaped and dark brown in colour. Ears are not too large and lie close to the side of the head. The Rottweiler comes only in black and rust red. The markings are above both

eyes, on the cheeks, front of the chest, on the lower legs and feet and at the vent. The coat is short thick and glossy. This breed does eat large amounts and will need to be exercised every day, so be prepared to work if this is the

breed you fancy. Jackie Perry is based in Phuket, but travels to judge shows all over the world. Jackie is happy to answer questions from dog lovers. Simply email her at yourbreed@thephuket news.com

ach week The Phuket News introduces an animal or plant that is found on the island of Phuket.

The sun was up already but this pair of lovebirds, or more correctly Asian treefrogs (Rhacophoridae), had not yet finished their overnight work – laying eggs. Hopping effortlessly around between leaves and branches in the garden and squeaking to each other all night, the frogs found this convenient bucket that had collected clean rain water. As many pond fish do,

the larger female made the floating foam-bubble nest by beating a substance like raw egg white that she extruded into the water, then took her time to lay many eggs into it. The smaller male, hanging happily on to her back all this time, then had the job of fertilising the eggs as quickly as they were laid. The surface of the bucket was now covered with floating transparent eggs

with little black developing neuclei in them. A mass hatching of tadpoles and a population explosion of treefrogs are expected anytime now. Some 341 species of

treefrogs, which can grow to 12cm long, live all over Southeast Asia. Their enlarged sticky pads on their fingers and toes allow them to leap around between trees with the greatest of ease. www.thephuketnews.com

Takua Pa is a small peaceful coastal town, located amid the freshness of a valley in Phang Nga province. Historically, Indian, Chinese and Arabic traders knew Takua Pa as Takola, the Indian word for the sweet-smelling cardamom spice. Its port was well known as a trading centre for spices on the early commercial trade route from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Siam 200 years ago. Takua Pa (tin in Thai) was also an important centre for tin-mining and was eventually included as an admin-

istrative district in the new Phang Nga province. It was morning of a longweekend. Thinking about where to go next, this traveller remembered the Takua Pa that she once visited with many friends, where she met other travellers who are now close friends. The bus ride of 120 kms from Phuket to the town on the northern coast of Phang Nga was a two-hour drive through thick forests, dense national parks and dark-green mountains, the road following a winding coastline all the way. The route passes through

the popular Khao Lak holiday area with its strings of luxury resorts on both sides of the highway north and south of the town. Travellers can take their time, slowing down and stopping to walk and take in the sights such as at the busy Khao Lak tourist township. More cars and motorbikes came onto the road as the sun rose. People were out early, opening their restaurants, spreading out their groceries or just relaxing in front of their houses. The old Sino-Portuguesestyle buildings on Udom Tara

and Sri Takua Pa roads silently testify to the golden age of old Takola when tin mines made the money that built the picturesque, grey, two-storey shophouses. Early next morning, this traveller woke in an old hotel that was decorated simply and neatly. With not many visitors around, it was an ideal place to rest. A Thai movie, Wonderful Town, seen the previous night, was shot around old Takua Pa. The film director was right: this charming old town is wonderful. –Sukunya Phoonpong

Mouth-watering satay and cucumber sauce.

Delicious satay is sliced pork, chicken, beef, lamb or fish, that has been marinated in turmeric, fish sauce and sugar, then skewered on little bamboo sticks and grilled to perfection over charcoal. It is then served with aromatic and tasty spiced peanut sauce and sliced cool cucumber and shallots mixed into a vinaigrette sauce. We can thank the Indonesian cooks of Java or Sumatra for the satay, the smoky aroma of which happily fills the air on those islands everyday. Its popularity has long since

Street eats spread to Malaysia and Singapore, where local variations are distinctively delicious, and the Philippines and Thailand. It opened in August 2009 and is intimate but casual, and also offers takeaway and delivery services. The restaurant also sells the popular Indian beer, Kingfisher, for B80 a pint, and acts as a distributor to other bars and restaurants around Thailand. For our meal Amish selected crispy onion bhaji

(B150) and a selection of kebabs (B199 to B250) to start with. The meat was cooked perfectly, the portions were generous, and very tasty. Mains included samples of mattar paneer masala (cooked cheese and peas in masala gravy, B299), makhani dal (black lentils, B120), and butter chicken (B299). All tasted fantastic and were full of authentic Indian spices. Fresh naan bread (B40 to 60) is also available. Also on the menu are vindaloo and tikka masala (both B299), other meat dishes, plus a wide range of vegetarian options.

The secret to the great tasting meat is that it is cooked using a traditional clay tandoor oven, which reaches maximum temperatures of 400ºC. Chef Chef Mahabir Singh slowly cooks the meat on kebab sticks and takes his time, crafting the food to perfection. If you like Indian, Kargo Kurry is a must to visit. It is well-priced, the staff are friendly, and the food is delicious.

Above: Mahabir Singh, the Indian chef, shows how to cook the kebabs in the traditional tandoor oven. Right: Annie, restaurant manager, with kebab style entrees. Below: Onion bhaji with dipping sauce.

Ethnic Chinese in Phuket believe that Por Tor Kong is a god of all demons. The seventh lunar month in the Chinese calendar is believed to be the period when spirits are released. The gates of Hell are opened and spirits released to wander or revisit their old homes. Kick back with friends at Amphoe Mueang

selection of food, beverages and has live international sport coverage. Pictured right is the tournament winner Mr Chai who walked away with a B3000 prize and trophy. He is pictured with bar owner Orawan `Noi’ Larsson.

If you’re feeling like a bit of a change of pace, try heading to the newly opened Amphoe Mueang bar in Phuket Town. With a laid back atmosphere and live music every night, this is more a place to relax and talk with friends than to party. It’s mainly frequented by Thais, but farang are always more than welcome and provide a bit of novelty value for the staff and musicians. Drink prices are B100 for Thai beers (and a very handy ‘buy 2 get 1 free’ Leo promotion), B290 for a big bottle of Sangsom, B30 for mixers. Cocktails are around B120. Decent Thai food is also available, with prices ranging between B80-120. It also has a fairly decent pool table out the back. Getting there: Amphoe Mueang is on the cor ner of Dibuk and Yaowarat Roads in Phuket Town, right next door to Ploenchit bar.

Phuket’s winless streak continues FOOTBALL

FC Phuket slumped to yet another away defeat, this time at the hands of the fabulously named Big Bang Chulalongkorn University FC (BBCU), to extend the side’s winless run away from home to nine matches. The Southern Sea Kirin had led the game after Poramut Krongborisut gave the visiting side the lead a minute into the second half. But two goals by the home side inside the final 30 minutes, including a screamer from Wutthichai Tatong, who smashed home A determined competitor in the first Ironkids event at a stunning 30-yard free-kick, TSLC, which took place earlier this year. gave the promotion favourites all three points. FC Phuket look determined before their match against BBCU midfielder Hossien Nissim was handed a first start and coach Somphong Wattana was forced into playing winger Nirun Panthong down the left after Rapeepun Poolsawat was forced to undergo seasonending knee surgery. The home side began the match brightly and created the game’s first chance within the opening minute when forward Wutthichai shot towards goal only to see it blocked by Nene Bi. BBCU continued to apply pressure to the visitors but were unable to convert their opportunities and almost paid the price for their profligacy in front of goal when FC Phuket came close to taking the lead. Ivorian striker Kone Adama met a Niran corner with a powerful header which beat the goalkeeper but was cleared off the line. That was as close as either

side came to scoring in the first half and they headed for the dressing room all square. As the teams came out for the second 45 minutes the rain eased off and FC Phuket made a dream start a minute into the second half. From the halfway line Niran found Poramut in space near the penalty area and the diminutive attacking midfielder controlled the ball first time with his left foot before firing past the BBCU ‘keeper. 1-0 almost became 2-0 when right back Ronnachai Jinaket found Kone in the box but his header was directed straight at the goalkeeper. The visitors were left to rue that missed chance a moment later when Wutthichai smashed an unstoppable 30-yard freekick past Jonathan Majitas to level the scores. With 20 minutes remaining BBCU scored the third and

final goal of the match when FC Phuket defenders could only clear the ball as far as one of the BBCU forwards whose low shot beat Majitas after the goalkeeper was left unsighted by his defence. FC Phuket, desperate for an equaliser, sent on Watcharapong Jan-ngam and Jongrak Pakdee but it was BBCU who came closest to scoring again; the home side had the ball in the net only to see it ruled out for offside. FC Phuket’s next fixture sees them travel to JW Rangsit this Saturday (August 13). In other news, FC Phuket have been drawn against Division Two South side Phatthalung FC in the quarter-finals of the 2011 Toyota League Cup. The Southern Sea Kirin travel to Phatthalung on Wednesday, August 17 with the home leg a week later. –Kazira Hanshanasattru

Four of the courts are covered by a high roof, which uses an innovative material that lets in light but only minimal heat, creating a light, airy, cool environment in all weather conditions. All the courts are lit for night play. Facilities also include male and female locker rooms and a 600-seat shaded grandstand for spectators. PBI provides a

level”. PBI’s representative, Travis Bertram, joins TSLC as tennis director, bringing his considerable experience in club, junior, and elite level coaching to the Thanyapura community. He was previously coach-

ing director at the esteemed Willingdon Sports Club in Mumbai, India where his responsibilities included daily tennis camps, clinics and training for the club’s advanced junior players. Under Coach Bertram, the TSLC tennis programme for summer 2011 will include ladies’ tennis mornings, children’s training camps and evening clinics. A full schedule of the PBI tennis programme at TSLC can be found on the website thanyapura.com. In the near future, TSLC’s Tennis Academy will host regional and international tournaments. Thanyapura will also welcome teams from around the world wanting to practice their skills on the Plexicushion courts, along with visiting regional tennis clubs seeking a weekend away. www.thephuketnews.com

INTERNATIONAL SPORT 41

Football is back! FOOTBALL

Over the past two months fans of English football have waited patiently for the Premier League to return. Now the wait is over. The 20th edition of the Barclay’s Premier League gets underway tomorrow evening (Saturday, August 13) local time and marks the start of another 10-month rollercoaster ride for players, managers, officials and fans alike. Since the end of the previous season all of the clubs have been busy in the transfer market strengthening their squads in preparation for the coming campaign. Defending champions Manchester United have been among the most active of the clubs and will once again start the season as favourites. Since May, Sir Alex Ferguson has seen club stalwarts Edwin van der Saar and Paul Scholes retire but has spent wisely bringing in Ashley Young of Aston Villa, Blackburn Rover’s Phil Jones and Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea for a combined total of 53 million pounds (B2.65 billion). On the evidence of last Sunday’s Community Shield win against neighbours Manchester City it also appears that a new generation of talented, young stars is about to emerge at Old Trafford like so many that have gone before. Although Ferguson has been in charge of more talented squads than the one he has at present, few would bet against him leading this group to United’s 20th league title, putting further distance between themselves and Liverpool (18). Sunday’s win over City means United have struck an early psychological blow against their probable nearest title challengers, one that could have ramifications in the latter stages of the season. Of the teams most likely to challenge United’s hegemony, City and Chelsea seemed the most well-equipped. City have the most talented squad in the league but doubts linger over the ability of manager Roberto Mancini to get the best out of them. Even at 2-0 against United at Wembley on Sunday, City appeared hesitant and unless Mancini can find a way to remove the tactical straitjacket he seems to have imposed on his side, City will struggle to match their neighbours. The arrival of Argentine star Sergio Aguero could be exactly what the Citizens are

Manchester United celebrate winning last year’s League Cup. Can they do it again this year? looking for if that is to take place. Chelsea have added a couple of young players – Thibaud Courtois, Oriol Romeu and Belgian rising star Romelu Lukaku – to their squad but with the likes of Lampard, Drogba, Anelka and even to an extent Terry another year older in the squad, they seem more and more like the Chelsea Pensioners that are regulars at Stamford Bridge when compared to United’s youthful charges. One 33-year-old at Chelsea whose age is being called into question – ironically for being too young – is prodigious manager Andre Villas-Boas who joined the Blues after leading Porto to the treble last season. Many feel that despite his early success, his age might be held against him among Chelsea’s older stars and that he could face a revolt if things don’t go according to plan. In spite of that, VillasBoas has every confidence in his abilities as a manager and should he find a way to get the best out of Fernando Torres – Chelsea’s record signing – then the Blues could be in for an exciting season. Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are likely to battle it out for the fourth and final Champions League position. Once again, despite supporters and critics of Arsenal slamming Arsene Wenger for not signing a top class goalkeeper and centre back, the Gunners boss has so far refused to strengthen his defence and Arsenal look set to go into the season looking weak at the back. There also remains huge speculation over the futures of stars Cesc Fabregas and Samir

Nasri – targets for Barcelona and Manchester City; should one or both of those players leave discontent among the Arsenal faithful will grow. The Gunners are still strong up front and in the shape of Jack Wilshere have the best young English footballer since Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene. If Wenger decides to address his side’s weaknesses and can keep hold of his stars then Arsenal will mean business. Since Kenny Dalglish took over Liverpool in January the club has spent more than 100 million pounds (B5 billion) on Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Dowing and Charlie Adam. The Anfield side appears to be weak at the back but will have to shift some of its deadwood before Dalglish can reinforce his backline. If the club legend can add a couple more signings then Liverpool, like Sir Alex Ferguson expects, could be a force to be reckoned with. After their one season in the Champions League, Spurs find themselves outside of Europe’s elite once more. Unusually, manager Harry Redknapp has been quiet in the transfer market but will be relieved that he has been able to keep hold of his star midfield trio of Luca Modric, Rafael van der Vaart and Gareth Bale. These three will ensure that Spurs create plenty of chances; whether they convert them is another matter entirely. Like last year several clubs can be expected to be involved in the fight against relegation back down to the Npower Championship. The three promoted teams

– Queens Park Rangers, Norwich and Swansea – face an uphill task to survive but the latter two should win themselves a lot of admirers for their style of football even if they don’t win too many games. Managers Paul Lambert (Norwich) and Brendan Rod-

gers (Swansea) have both pledged to stick to their footballing principles, admirable considering how much staying in the Premier League is worth. Neil Warnock’s QPR will adopt a more conservative, direct approach when it comes to their football but while they might not entertain as much

on the field as the other two sides they were promoted with, Warnock’s abrasive personality and ability to get under the skin of opposing managers should create plenty of interesting moments. Other teams nervously looking over their shoulders at the bottom three are likely to include the three W’s – Wigan Athletic, West Bromwich Albion and Wolves – along with troubled Blackburn Rovers and possibly Newcastle given all the unrest currently taking place at St James’ Park. Of the five, Wolves and West Brom appear best equipped to beat the drop and should secure another season in the top flight, while the others are likely to be fighting for their Premier League lives. One thing that is for certain: no matter who is crowned champion and which teams are relegated, it’s set to be another thrilling Premier League ride. NZ dominate AmCup opener

Five teams crowded the podium on Sunday at the America’s Cup World Series in Cascais, Portugal as the opening weekend ended with some champagne sailing. While both Asian teams –China Team and Team Korea – took podium positions during the AC 500 Speed Trials, Emirates Team New Zealand were double winners on the day, claiming top spot in the AC Cascais Preliminaries after four fleet races and then recording the fastest run in the AC 500 Speed Trial. “We are happy how it went,” said skipper Dean Barker. “But we know we have a lot to keep up with. It’s nice; a good feeling to start the week, but there is a lot we need to improve on.” Oracle Racing Coutts won Sunday’s long fleet race, stealing victory from Emirates Team New Zealand after a member of its crew fell overboard. The Kiwis did their best to hang on, but Coutts managed to grind down the shorthanded New Zealand crew just a few hundred metres from the finish, giving the American team victory in the race and second place overall, with Sweden’s Artemis Racing in third spot.

SAILING

In the AC500 Speed Trial, the top three teams needed their third and final runs to record their fastest speeds. The Kiwis, after a disappointing first two tries, had a perfect set-up for their final attempt, screaming down the track at an average speed of 42.35 kph. They were followed closely by Team Korea (39.28) and China Team (37.43), two of the newer, less-practiced teams in the AC45 catamaran. Despite a relative lack of time on the boats, China Team’s skipper shared his philosophy for recording a fast run: “There are only two speeds to these boats,” said Mitch Booth. “Flat out, and stopped!” The sailing captured the imagination of the crowds but the headline incident on the day was the man overboard on Emirates Team New Zealand. Winston Macfarlane, one of the big grinders on board, was washed overboard during a fast manoeuvre at a turning mark halfway through the race. Macfarlane was grinding a winch when the handle snapped, meaning he lost his balance as the boat accelerated out of the turn.

In a move reminiscent of car rallying, Team New Zealand fling their boat sideways coming up to a mark. While Macfarlane swam to safety and hauled himself on to the nearby mark-boat, Barker’s crew was obliged to sail the rest of the course short-handed. Sailing the second half

of the race with just four men meant their crew work was slower and they had less weight on the side of the boat to balance the power of the wing rig.

Oracle Racing Coutts could smell blood and attacked the vulnerable Kiwi crew on the final beat to the finish, stealing victory in the final moments of the race.

Despite the loss, Emirates Team New Zealand claimed a historic double win on the day, launching their campaign for the 34th America’s Cup in style.

In London, the heat is on OLYMPICS Before the mood was dampened by the mindless rioting that has rocked the country, Britons had started to come down with a serious case of Olympic fever, following a number of test events that took place last weekend. The most high profile event took place recently in the water of the Serpentine, around central London and in Hyde Park as the world’s leading Olympic distance triathletes tested out the course that will be used in 2012. Since triathlon became an Olympic sport in Sydney in 2000, Team GB has never won a medal but with less than a year until the main event, the host nation is in with a very real chance of scooping three, including two golds. On Saturday, Welsh star Helen Jenkins pulled clear of the 67-strong élite women’s field in the closing stages of the run to beat off the challenge of American triathlete Gwen Jorgensen and secure gold in race five of the seven-race World Championship Series and nail down her place in London for next year’s Olympics. Jenkins’ performance was www.thephuketnews.com

Brownlee exited the swim inside the top 10 behind Beijing Olympic gold medallist Jan Frodeno – the German athlete who smashed the course record on his way to victory at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon in 2009 – but led a small breakaway group on the bike that established a healthy lead

over the chasing pack. The 23-year-old Yorkshireman is widely regarded as one of the fastest runners on the circuit, regularly completing the 10km run in under 30 minutes, and it was no surprise that he left the field trailing behind in the final discipline on his way to a total time of 1 hour, 50 minutes and nine seconds. Brownlee had enough time to indulge in a little showboating, walking across the line and high-fiving members of the huge crowd, and still beating second-placed Alexander Bryukhankov by 25 seconds. Elsewhere the world’s top sailors took to the water in Weymouth and Portland and battled tough conditions in the Olympic sailing test event. Triple Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie made light work of the tricky conditions to establish an early lead in the event, which concludes tomorrow. Eton Dorney, the site of next year’s Olympic regatta hosted the World Junior Rowing Championships and Horse Guards Parade, the location of the annual Changing of the Guards, staged a 24-team women’s beach volleyball tournament.

The season starts here; Can you predict it? For England’s top 20 clubs, the time for talking is over as the 20th Premier League season gets under way this weekend. Pre-season training is finished and the teams are now ready to go head-to-head over the next 10 months in what is widely regarded as the most exciting league in the world. Unfortunately only one team can win the Premier League, and if you support the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, Fulham, West Bromwich Albion, indeed any team below the top six, the chances of seeing your side presented with the Premier League trophy come May are sadly all but non-existent. So while the hopes and dreams of you and your team might have faded and died before the end of August, you personally can enjoy the football season right until the bitter end thanks to The Phuket News’ brand new Premier League Tipping Competition.

Like the English top flight, our competition starts this weekend and will run every weekend that there is Premier League football to be enjoyed. Entry to the competition is free and the grand prize is a return flight to England. In addition to the seasonending grand prize we will also give away prizes to the highest points scorer for every month of the season from August right through until May, courtesy of our sponsors. Given the league’s midAugust starting time, August and September will be combined and one prize awarded for the top scorer. The prize for August and September has been kindly donated by Peppers Bar and Restaurant in Tinlay Place, just outside Laguna, and the top points scorer for the two months combined will win a B3,000 voucher to be used at Peppers. All you have to do to

We’re in Billion Plaza, opposite Tesco-Lotus on the bypass road. Every Friday before the next round of Premier League action The Phuket News will publish the week’s upcoming fixtures; all you have to decide is whether each match will finish in a home win, an away win, or a draw.

By correctly predicting a home or an away win you will receive two points and three points will be awarded if a draw is correctly predicted; a bonus 10 points is awarded to any player who manages to get all of the results of a week’s play correct. Should you outscore The Phuket News’ in-house football ‘expert’, Sports Editor Dan Ogunshakin – whose tips will appear in the paper each week – then we will award you a further five points for being such a smarty-pants. In addition to our expert’s tips, we’ll also bring you the predictions of a number of the island’s well-known residents over the course of the season so you can see how you match up to them as well! Each Friday, we will include the results of the previous round and publish a league table of the top 10 performing tipsters that week, plus the overall league leaders.

You will also be able to keep track of your own performance thanks to your unique website login ID. This Saturday Blackburn are at home to Wolves, Fulham take on Aston Villa, Liverpool face Sunderland at Anfield, newly promoted QPR are at home against Bolton, Spurs start at home against Everton, Wigan face new boys Norwich and Newcastle take on Arsenal at St James’ Park. There are two games on Sunday as Stoke begin their campaign with the visit of Chelsea and new manager André Villa-Boas to the Britannia Stadium, while West Brom also face a tough opener against defending champions Manchester United. The final game of Week 1 comes at Eastlands where Manchester City take on newly promoted Swansea in the early hours of Tuesday morning Thailand time. Let the games begin!

All Blacks look like real deal

Last weekend two teams from completely separate countries ran onto rugby fields with a genuine claim of being nicknamed the All Blacks, but by the time both games had concluded rugby fans across the globe were left in little doubt as to which team was the real deal and who were the wannabes. An under-strength England team took on Wales at Twickenham wearing their controversial “all black” kit for the very first time and, while they may have looked like the All Blacks from a distance, the rugby they played was a far cry from the sustained excellence

that the originals served up in their 30-14 Tri-Nations win against Australia. Last Saturday’s match at Eden Park was billed as a potential dress rehearsal for the World Cup final on October 23 and should these two line up against each other six weeks after the start of the 2011 tournament, New Zealand will start as favourites. The All Blacks started on the front foot and were 10 points in front before the Australians had started getting going. Once the Wallabies did get some ball, they put New Zealand under intense pressure

but the home defence held firm thanks largely to the brilliance of fly half Dan Carter. There can be little doubt that the Kiwi number 10 is currently the world’s best player. His kicking and defence were nothing short of immaculate and, while Carter may lack the imagination and pure creative fluidity of Cooper, he is still hugely adept at dictating the way New Zealand play, making line breaks and bringing his fellow backs into play. At Twickenham England’s “all blacks” had Wales at their mercy with the score at 20-7 but a raft of changes ensured that the wheels fell off in the

closing stages. The Welsh came roaring back and ended up just four points adrift at 23-19 by fulltime. That Martin Johnson’s side won at all was largely down to another number 10, Jonny Wilkinson. On his first start in 18 months, the World Cup’s leading points scorer turned in a man-of-the-match performance which papered over the cracks. As things stand, the genuine All Blacks are the favourites for the World Cup, if history has taught us one thing where the Kiwis are concerned, being favourites and winning are completely separate things.
