Col ML Pattanachak said that because police were assigned to other duties during the New Y ear period, thus reducing manpower, people were using this as an opportunity to carry out burglaries on sois and small streets. “After receiving complaints and reports about the burglaries we immediately held a meeting to try to counter the problem,” Col ML Pattanachak explained. “We located the hot spots and found the time the crimes were being committed and re-adjusted our man power to cover the areas in q uestion. Since taking this action we have seen a reduction in burglaries in those areas,” Col ML Pattanachak said.

“S
tay home, lock your doors – in fact, avoid Phuket and Thailand altogether if you don’t want to become the victim of the next mugging, rape, suicide or murder.” Such is the message and tone of fear being set by certain agitators as of late, especially in places like the UK, where it seems a large portion of the reported spate of “Thailand tourist victims” tend to be hailing from. Truth be told, you could swap out “Phuket” from the above message with “B ali”, “H awaii”, “London”, “Sydney” “Athens”, “Rome”, “New ork aris ok o or pretty much any other popular international destination, and it would carry the same weight – that is if “fear” is to be one’s preferred catalyst for “survival”. I n reporting “hard news”
day in, day out, T h e P h uk et N ew s ’ aim is not to promote fear but rather to inform readers of the challenges and potential threats, in the hopes that they are able to cope with and mitigate reality, not avoid or run from it. Though it’d be a fool’s task to argue that violent crime does not exist in Thailand, and Phuket specifically, it would be eq ually foolish to make the claim that you are safer in any other destination. Victims of most violent crimes the world over, usually but not always, have one thing in common. That is they are vulnerable, and this vulnerability is subseq uently exploited by the darker side of “human nature” – not exclusively “Thai nature” like some tabloids might have you believe. I t seems that many foreign visitors to Phuket all-too-often
leave their “common sense” behind at the airport. That is they proceed to behave here in ways that they wouldn’t back in their safe havens abroad. They let their guard down, naive to think that “it won’t happen to me”. I ndeed, many of the wellpublicised victim crimes in Thailand might have been avoided had vulnerability not been a factor. And while T h e P h uk et N ew s does not advocate putting blame on victims after the fact, we strongly encourage readers to be proactive, realistic and objective when consuming bad news, so as to learn from it in order to not have to become it. This will ensure that you can enjoy your time here in paradise, safe and sound. H owever, failing to apply basic “street smarts” – everywhere in the world – could prove detrimental.

HAVE YOUR SAY Some noise from the silent majority
R e: s til l w aiting f or S ur in b each cl ub cl ear ance I n December you reported that Phuket Vice Governor Chokdee Amornwat declared that the clearance of the Surin beach clubs would happen before January of this year. At the time, we set aside a bottle of champagne, to e sa ored at first sight o bulldozers. Sadly, the cork remains un-popped to this day. The beach “clubs” along the northern half of Surin beach are little more than a public nuisance. The relentless thumping they blast across the entire bay, day and night, may be welcome to their presumably deaf customers, but it’s ruining the experience of Surin beach for everyone else. B y the time this godawful racket has been dampened by the trees and umbrellas opposite their establishments, all that’s left is a dull bass-heavy sound-shadow which extends well beyond the portion of beach occupied by the clubs. To add insult to injury, it’s widely alleged these so-called
“clubs” are illegally occupying the land and spoiling the rest of the beach for all but a handful of musicallychallenged patrons. O ne can only wonder from which bountiful wells the “club” managers siphon their arrogance. B eyond the noise-pollution, some ban non-customers from parking motorbikes on the public beach-front road opposite their venue, whilst others operate a door and fee policy more fitting of a Mayfair nightclu than an illegal i o and urgers oint. We, and no-doubt the wishing-for-silence majority, sincerely hope your esteemed pages will soon report the demise of these cacophonists. Olaf.
Disappearing trees to make way for more cars

Hackers take out Thai court websites over Koh Tao ruling Measures tightened for EU inspection H ACK E RS ASSO CIATE D with the Anony m ous collective have knocked offline nearly 300 Thai court and government websites in retaliation for death sentences handed down to two Myanmar men for murdering a pair of British tourists on K oh Tao. n a acebook post to a non official Anonymous page, the hackers, believed to be the same Myanmar group that defaced Royal Thai Police websites on Jan 5 , said they had shut down “all Thai Court of Justice websites in protest over the ohTao murder verdict.” “Anonymous is supporting the cam paign to ask tourists to boycott Thailand until such time changes are m ade with the way Thai police handle investigations involving foreign tourists’,” the post read. The post included the graphic bearing the name “Blink Hackers Group” that replaced the home pages of a reported 13 Thai police websites earlier this month, along with a Thai flag emblazoned with a hand giving a middle finger gesture. The group also listed the 294 websites attacked. Random checks of those on the list all resulted in failures to connect as of Wednesday afternoon (Jan 13). The list of sites includes every Court of Justice website, and in addition, the Chiang Mai Tourist Rights Protection website. The Blink Hackers Group have taken the front line position online in wide ranging protests in Myanmar over the Christmas ve sentencing of Z aw Lin and Wy n Z aw Htun for the September 2014 rape and murder of Hannah Witheridge and murder of @thephuketnews
David Miller. Critics of the judgement claim the 22 year old men were tortured by police and forced to confess to a crime they did not com m it, then were railroaded in a botched investigation using questionable DNA evidence. Anony m ous is a loosely organised band of “hacktivists” that has launched cyber attacks against businesses, terrorist groups and governments it feels have affronted society’s norms. ringe groups often claim Anonymous support to launch their own attacks. Anonymous, however, has been vocal in its criticism of the handling of the oh Tao case. t prepared a 40 minute video detailing what it claims were the shortcomings in the investigation and has tacitly or explicitly endorsed several cyber attacks against the Thai government and police. arlier, police refused to firmly state that the oh Tao ruling was the motivation for the cyber attack and, unlike today, hackers did not explicitly state their reasoning for the attack. At least five websites were penetrated on Jan 5 – the Police Clearance Certificate Centre, Metropolitan Police Bureau, Marine Police Division and the Phichit provincial police office – and the hacker group claimed eight others were taken down. After many of the home pages had been restored a police spokesm an even m ade a taunting com m ent to R euters: “ T hey’r e not go o d enough to hack into our system and steal any of our data,” Pol Gen Dejnarong Suthicharnbuncha told the news agency . T
he government is tightening measures against llegal, nreported and nregulated ( ) fishing and ty ing up loose ends ahead of the uropean nion’s inspection next week. During a cabinet meeting Tuesday (Jan 12), Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon revealed a list outlining government efforts to clamp down on fishing that will be presented to the delegation between Jan 18 and 22. Thailand was issued a yellow card last April for failing to tackle illegal fishing practices. The E U delegation, com posed of inspectors and envoy s, is expected to announce whether to rescind the yellow card or issue a red one at the end of the visit or soon after. A red card will mean an automatic import ban on Thai seafood products. Gen Prawit has called a final meeting between state agencies for tomorrow, to prepare for the visit. “ ’m certain Thailand will pass the inspection,” he said confidently. All agencies were ordered to implement measures laid down by the government by last riday (Jan 8), as well as prepare necessary documents
and information to present to the E U team . Among the measures introduced by the government since the middle of 2015, are a revised isheries Act – which came into force last June – and 31 related laws published in the Royal Gazette. Another 21 are about to be published. According to the Command Centre for Combating llegal ishing (CCC ), Thailand has inspected 317 fishing vessels operating in its territorial waters for signs of illegal fishing. The only required the authorities to examine 220, or 10 per cent of the total number of vessels in home waters. However, authorities have only inspected 43 vessels that operate in international waters out of a required 73. The E U also dem anded that 10 of the country’s seafood processing factories be inspected – or 81 factories. f the 115 factories examined by the isheries Department, five were ordered to close for 10 days after they were found to have violated regulations. Three are facing permanent closure, while the ndustry Ministry shut down another factory. An licence system for contractors will be finalised before Jan 30, the government
says, while procedures to improve the issuing of licences and the monitoring of vessels in real time and online were com pleted last m onth. A total of 2,076 trawlers – out of 2,216 – weighing more than 60 gross tonnes were equipped with Vessel Monitoring Systems. Authorities say they are making the presence of observers on board trawlers that weigh more than 60 gross tonnes mandatory. The isheries Department has trained these observers to detect unusual activities and could be deployed later this month. Meanwhile, the ffice of the Attorney General ( AG) has forwarded human trafficking cases to prosecuters. Among the 41 cases handed to them between ctober and December 2015, eight were
directly linked to the fishing industry. The government has also joined forces with seafood enterprises, non governmental organisations – including Greenpeace and the nternational Labour rganisation – and other governments through the signing of agreements. These include an agreement on migrant labour with Vietnam and Cambodia. n another development, the cabinet also approved a new ministerial regulation prohibiting children under 18 working in seafood processing factories. Previously children under 18 were allowed to work anywhere except slaughterhouses, gambling dens and massage parlours, government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern aewkamnerd said. B an g kok P ost

opeye the hitman kneels down in the gravel, bends over and kisses the black slate tomb of his late boss and friend, Colombian drug lord Pablo E scobar. H e parted ways with E scobar’s blood-stained Medellin Cartel in 1992, and, after serving a 23-year prison sentence, says he is now trying hard to be a new man. B ut this self-confessed killer of hundreds of people still harbours fond memories of the man who took him aside three decades ago and invited him into a world of glitz, intrigue, violence and wealth he could only have dreamed of. “Pablo E scobar Gaviria was a murderer, a terrorist, a drug tra cker a kidna er and an extortionist. B ut he was my friend,” said Popeye, whose real name is Jhon Jairo Velasq uez. “H e had an incredible magnetism,” he said in an interview in Medellin, the city from which E scobar ran a massive cocaine tra cking o eration that made him the world’s seventh-richest man. H e met the feared kingpin while working as a bodyguard for a Colombian beauty q ueen. E scobar invited her to his house one night, and Popeye went along with her. “H e came up to talk to me and asked me to come work for him. I was 23,” Popeye said. Simple as that, this cattle farmer’s son from the small village of Y arumal was employed by the Medellin Cartel.
H owever, Popeye, who turned 5 3 recently, is unabashed by his crimes. H e estimates he killed “at least 25 0 people, maybe 300,” and ordered the killing of some 3,000 others. “At that level, you don’t count anymore. I didn’t make a little hash mark every time I killed somebody,” he said, seated on a bench in front of E scobar’s austere tomb in the I tagui cemetery perched above Medellin. “I t was a brutal war. H e was 30 years old. “I was in love. I wanted to live. I gave him my pistol. We hugged and I left him, alone,” Popeye said. E scobar was killed in a
rooftop shootout with police in Medellin the following year. Popeye for his part was sentenced to 30 years in a maximum security prison. H e was released last year on parole, nearly seven years early. H e went into therapy while he was in prison. “I ’m a professional killer, not a psychopath who kills people because he can’t help it,” he said. For eight years, he and his psychologist “worked on my violence,” he said. “E very day, I made a list of all the nasty things I said to the guards. Little by little, I changed my way of thinking and acting.” Popeye got his nickname from an early stint as a sailor and his sharply protruding chin – which he has since had plastic surgery to reduce. Today, his close-cropped hair going white, he says little remains of his younger self. B ut he retains his esteem for “the boss.” H e is not alone. E very year in Medellin, E scobar’s admirers celebrate the anniversary of his birth and death – December 1, 194 9 and
December 2, 1993. People come from across the country and even overseas to visit his grave. “Pablo E scobar was a god,” said 28-year-old Jorge Londono. “E ven if he did a lot of harm to Colombia. H e was a complex character, capable of loving and hating with the same strength.” I rene Gaviria, 88, thanks the fallen drug lord for giving her a decent roof over her head – one of the thousands of colourful houses he built for the destitute people who lived at the Moravia garbage dump. The neighbourhood is today called B arrio Pablo E scobar. “H e did a lot of good things for us,” said Ms Gaviria. The reverence for E scobar extends to Popeye, who gamely signed autographs on 2,000-peso bills (worth about B 21) for visitors to the drug lord’s grave. “People like me, they support me,” he said. B ut Popeye is glad to distance himself from the past. “I ’d never been free before. I was with Pablo E scobar and then I was in prison,” he said. “Today I ’m the owner of my time, my life.” A F P

Phuket's yachting lifestyle is synonymous with beautiful cruising grounds and marina facilities that have helped to earn it the reputation of being the ‘Asian Riviera’.

O
ffshore Financial Centres (O FCs) are jurisdictions, usually self-governing, which because of their low tax regim es, have specialised in providing com m ercial services to corporations and individuals, whether or not they are norm ally resident in that jurisdiction. The better-known offshore financial centres are sm all and sparsely populated countries or islands, and are ty pically very prosperous. These centres often have specialist areas of finance for which they are known. Luxem bourg, for exam ple, is a renowned dom icile for SICAV s (socié té d’investissem ent à capital variable) and also unit trusts. Fiduciary , trust and offshore com pany form ation are sought out in the B ritish V irgin Islands (B V I), Mauritius or the Sey chelles. We have seen Gibraltar and Malta establishing them selves as the dom inant jurisdictions for QRO PS (Qualify ing Recognised O verseas Pension Schem es). And, of course, other jurisdictions are popular for corporate and personal banking, as well as investm ent, such as Switzerland, Isle of Man and the Cay m an Islands. Interestingly , the U nited States, which has been critical of the tax breaks offered by offshore centres, actually harbours its very own taxhaven. B ecause of its taxfriendly laws, the U S State of Delaware is hom e to over half of all publicly traded corpora@thephuketnews
tions in the U nited States and 60 per cent of Fortune 5 00 com panies. The num ber of O FCs has grown in recent y ears, and today there are nearly 1 00 O FCs spread around the world, with new centres em erging all the tim e. Like Tunisia, for exam ple. Africa’s first offshore centre, the U S$ 3 billion (B 1 08 .3 8 billion) Tunis Financial H arbour developm ent is expected to take advantage of its strategic position on the Mediterranean Sea to becom e the bridge between E urope and developing Africa. The main benefit of keeping y our m oney in an offshore centre usually relates to taxes, but they are not open to every one. Y ou m ust be deem ed a “non-resident” of y our hom e country for tax purposes in order to legitim ately establish a base in an O FC. If y ou spend the vast m ajority of y our tim e in Phuket, or have m ultiple countries of residency with favourable taxation sy stem s like Thailand’s, y ou will probably qualify . For those Phuket residents who do spend tim e in their hom e countries, they m ust ensure that they are not spending sufficient time there for their governm ent to continue to deem them a tax resident of that country . For exam ple, the U K has a residency test which looks at the ties y ou still have to B ritain; m ost other countries still go by the old 1 8 3 day s rule. So if y ou are a non-resident for tax purposes, what are the best and safest offshore centres to use? B ased on security , political stability , and confidentiality it is difficult to com pete with the U K ’s Channel Islands (J ersey and
Guernsey ), and the Isle of Man. These centres have investor protection schem es in place to protect y our m oney which are equivalent, if not superior, to the assurances offered by m ost onshore jurisdictions (and certainly better than those in m ost other O FCs). All the institutions y ou can do business with are m ajor institutions, with assets in the hundreds of billions, but to offer y ou an added lay er of security , investm ents m ade on these islands are held by a third party trustee or custodian in a segregated account. In the case of the Isle of Man, a separate protection schem e has been established by the regulators to further protect y our capital. It is im portant to note that the Channel Islands and Isle of Man are B ritish Crown Dependencies, but not part of the U K . This m eans their foreign representation and defense are handled by Whitehall, but they still in fact rem ain selfgoverning territories. Whereas the U K has a diverse econom y , a very large proportion of the GDP of these islands is based on financial services. J ersey and Guernsey have sm all tourist industries; the Isle of Man hosts the TT races every y ear; all three have a lot of sheep; but banking and finance are very m uch the staples of their econom ies. Being social, getting results
Part 2/3 on how Phuket company built its brand
I
n the first article of this three part series case study on down to earth social marketing, the team at Than yapura explained how they doubled their web traffic and engagement with their audience in six months, and that was in what they see as the so called “low season”. The opening two pronged volley was pretty technical, citing how to improve your website and gain richer search engine rankings, even beyond Google, by improving site speed, removing 404 errors, interlinking and being mobile friendly, and even understand ing your own website’s search verticals and submitting to them. Here, in the second install ment, the team explains in their own words those oft heard but poorly understood terms “Creating quality content”, “Becoming more social” and “Geotargeting for local suc cess”
CREATING QUALITY CONTENT
uality content should answer
For Thanyapura, the main focus was to capture audiences across a range of social media platforms
In order to meet the bottom line, a website has to provide relevant, and properly-organised and tagged content. the needs of the customer. t should be S L, VAL ABL , CR D BL in the hopes that the customer will find it D S RABL so that you can further engage with your audience and brand.
There are well over 200 algorithms that we know of, or suspect with Google, but it is not known for sure how many exist outside of that. However, one thing that has always re mained true is that you need
to create quality content and you can’t cheat Google over the long term. As mentioned, Thanyapura is a sports facility with an em phasis on triathlon, swimming and cycling. However, when Thanyapura began to broaden its content to include fitness, wellness and weight loss it saw an overwhelming response. This was the content Th anyapura’s users really felt engaged with. They not only wanted to know how to com pete in a triathlon, they wanted to learn about how to balance other areas of their lives as well. or example, nutrition, weight management, wellness, and mindfulness. t became important to them to reach out to their au dience with the content they found D S RABL . t was content they could S in their
lives and therefore, became a VAL ABL asset to them. The more content Than yapura produced the more opportunity it had to promote additional content and build relationships with its customers. By forging relationships with its audience on CR D B L T , it became a natural process for its customers to funnel their interests into Thanyapura’s many sports programmes. The content that was D S RABL to the audience was the content that helped them to make informed decisions. nce Thanyapura began building up content, it was time to go social.
BECOMING MORE SOCIAL
The landscape of social me dia is always changing and
evolving. At Thanyapura, the main focus was to capture audiences across a range of social media platforms, which included outube, nstagram, Twitter, Stumbleupon, Pinter est, acebook, and Google . n doing this, they had to focus on their storytelling skills and create unique and relatable content for each platform. By building a following and loyal fan base, Thanyapura became increasingly accessible to new customers, while the company had to retain its exist ing audience who had become ambassadors for its brand by freely sharing, commenting and liking pictures and stories Thanyapura publishes on its platforms, which in turn builds its audience even more. Social media is a won derful tool to connect B2C (business to customer) and we expect this to grow over the next few months. With the growing reach, Thanyapura has experienced they expect to continue to engage with its customers increasingly using social media.
GEOTARGETING FOR LOCAL SUCCESS
t is very easy to target a very broad audience when building a content marketing strategy and neglect your local target market. The very first thing Thanyapura did to address this issue was to search for Thanyapura on a local level – that is, for Phuket, Thailand, was Thanyapura NDABL Thanyapura offers a variety of sports resort activities, from cycling, triathlon, swimming, fitness and wellness. Thanyapura made sure that it could be found when someone was searching for Asia, Southeast Asia or Phuket for any of the above activities. This did not happen overnight. t meant editing a range of content they already had and including alt tags on images, H2 headers, keyword place ment and other tricks of the S trade. By geotargeting primary pages for services offered in the local area, you are able to build awareness in the local community. In our third and final article in the series, we will look at the “next six months”, when the core focus shifted to: Partnership and content exchange ambassadors/teams; Monetization/ Conversions; Video blogging; Improved Engagement; and Graphics/Visuals. thephuketnews

Global grief for late music
legend David Bowie
ritish music legend David Bowie has died at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer, drawing an outpouring of tributes for one of the most influential and innovative artists of all time. A notoriously private person, Bowie’s death came as a shock for the world just days after he had released his 25th studio album Blackstar on his 69th birthday on Friday. “David Bowie died peacefully today (Sunday) surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer,” said a statement posted last Monday (January 11). The death brings the curtain down on an extraordinary musical innovator and style icon, with a career dating back to his first major hit Space Oddity in 1969, about an astronaut called Major Tom who became lost in orbit. Bowie spanned styles ranging from glam rock, New Romantic, rock and dance music to alt rock, jungle, soul and hard rock, underpinned by an astonishing array of stage personas from the sexually ambiguous Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke.
Fans left flowers and messages at a mural of Bowie’s face painted with a lightning bolt in Brixton, the district of south London where he was born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947. Although he left school with just one qualification, an “O-level” in art, he went on to sell an estimated 140 million records worldwide, with his biggestselling album Let’s Dance selling seven million copies. In the first of many re-inventions that were to make him a style icon, he named himself David Bowie in 1966 to avoid confusion with Davy Jones, lead singer of The Monkees. The 1970s – the decade that saw him dominate the British music scene and conquer the United States – brought forward a string of successful albums. It began with the critically acclaimed Hunky Dory, continued with The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars followed by the rock album Aladdin Sane and more. The 80s saw him win over a new generation with Let’s Dance and team up with Mick Jagger for a cover of Dancing in the Street that helped to push the BandAid and LiveAid charity projects.
He also appeared in films in acting and cameo roles, from his striking appearance in the cult 1986 film Labyrinth to playing a prisoner of war in Japan in 1983’s Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and inventor Nikola Tesla in The Prestige in 2006. An innovator to the end, Bowie released his final album Blackstar on January 8. A dark work marked by tense instrumentation, a sense of dread and lyrics about mortality, the work is cast in a new light by the revelation of how ill he was when he created it. Its third track Lazarus begins with the lyrics “Look up here, I’m in heaven, I’ve got scars that can’t be seen.” Bowie leaves behind his second wife Iman, a supermodel who he married in 1992 and with whom he had a daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones. He also had a son, film director Duncan Jones, with his first wife Angie Bowie.
“David’s friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person,” said US rock musician Iggy Pop. Germany thanked Bowie for what it said was his role in helping topple the Berlin Wall in 1989, in a tweet with a link to a video of his Cold War-era anthem Heroes set in the then-divided city. British astronaut Tim Peake wrote from the International Space Station: “Saddened to hear David Bowie has lost his battle with cancer – his music was an inspiration to many.” Brian Eno, who worked with Bowie on his legendary Berlin Trilogy of albums, said that Bowie sent him an email two weeks ago that was typical for its wordplay and invented names. “It ended with this sentence: ‘Thank you for our good times, Brian. They will never rot.’ And it was signed ‘Dawn,’” Eno said in a statement. “I realize now he was saying goodbye.” AFP

Calling all stem cell, bone marrow donors in Phuket Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
T
he family of a 24-year-old Chinese-Thai and Italian woman suffering from leukemia has made a public appeal, seeking a relatively-rare, Eurasian stem-cell donor match as one of their last hopes for the girl’s survival. After being diagnosed with the disease last month, Lara, a 24-year-old ChineseThai and Italian woman, was told by British doctors that her only hope of survival is if she receives a transplant of stem cells, which can be extracted from the bone marrow of a matching donor. However, the family has not yet found a match, citing that only three per cent of the existing international bone marrow registry comprises of potential donors of mixed-race heritage. According to her family’s appeal posted on match4lara.com, any potential donor can make a difference simply by joining a bone marrow registry, in Thailand and internationally (full list on website link above). “It’s as easy as spitting into a test tube or using a cheek swab. If you turn out to be a match for Lara or one of the 12,000 other people around the world in need,
Lara is one of 1,500+ people in Thailand, and 12,000+ in the world who need a stem cell donor match. you could save a life,” the appeal reads. Donors in Thailand can donate through the Thai Red Cross National Blood Center in Bangkok, which reported as having 182,064 donors in its registry, has only found a mere 194 matches for a total of 1,522 terminally ill patients in need of a transplant in the kingdom. The Red Cross National Blood Centre (RCNBC) in Bangkok told The Phuket News that the first step to becoming a donor is to register and determine your Human Leukocyte Antigen or HLA typing. Unfortunately, this process is not yet possible in Phuket and requires any/all potential donors to make an appointment at the RCNBC (see details below). Furthermore, the RCNBC notes that it can take two months to process potential

A trip for the adventurous
Circumnavigating Phuket Island by Speedboat! JAMIE’S PHUKET Jamie Monk e d ito r @ c la s s a c tm e d ia .c o .th
The aim was to cruise a complete circuit of Phuket Island stopping off on the way at a few places and seeing what’s possible.
P
huket is a big island. I’ve said that before, but it’s worth repeating. Part of the reason for starting Jamie’s Phuket Blog in the first place was to show that there is way more to Phuket than some beaches, bars and a few well-known attractions. Over the years doing the blog, it’s been good to explore Phuket and the surrounding area. Over the bridge into Phang Nga province, by boat over to Phi Phi, Racha Yai or Koh Yao Noi islands. Phuket is an island, and within a 1 hour speedboat ride there must be 100 smaller islands and there’s certainly some amazing scenery. If you charter a speedboat you can go when and where you want (within reason!). Many speedboat tours head to Phi Phi or James Bond Island or Khai island (for snorkeling) or Raya island. You can take boat trips every day for a week to somewhere different. You can ask my friends at Easy Day Thailand about all kinds of tours. They offer private tours and try to avoid the crowds as much as possible – yeh, some of these places can get real busy. To avoid crowds, it’s best to visit places early or late in the day .. or just do something different, explore, see what happens! And that’s what we did last weekend!
The sun sets over Koh Waew, a tiny island close to Bang Tao Beach. The boys at Easy Day Thailand hired a speedboat for the day to see what could be done. The aim was to cruise a complete circuit of Phuket Island stopping off on the way at a few places and seeing what’s possible. We did not start until after midday which led to a very late lunch and a feeling that probably a 10am start would have been better. On a hot day with calm seas, we started out from Chalong Bay and headed south towards the east coast of Phuket. It’s a long ride to get around Phuket, I’d say we covered about 130km, or 70 nautical miles. In certain spaces we could open the throttle, but there are plenty of marine craft around Phuket, with longtail, fishing, sailing, and speedboats – you have to slow down sometimes! Best anyway not to race, but enjoy the views of Phuket island from the sea. First stop was Koh Rang Yai island, a lovely little island. There were about a dozen boats by the beach and looked like mostly Russian tourists.
Rang Yai is not big, but if you walk 100m from the boats, you see a tranquil beach. Oh yes! We walked across the island which is mostly full of coconut palms (see photo below). There is some private development here, a restaurant, small bar, some bungalows, but it’s mostly quiet, and remember this was midday in high season. Paradise? Well, don’t ask me, I’ve traveled a lot and my mind varies between two points of view – there is no paradise (someone always spoils it), and paradise is what you make it. Well, the kids in our group certainly loved Rang Yai. We could have stayed longer at Koh Rang Yai, but due to our late start, people started to feel hungry and lunch was still nearly 40km away! The plan was for lunch at a restaurant next to Sarasin Bridge which joins Phuket to the mainland. So off we sped up the east coast of Phuket. The east coast is way less visited than the west coast where the main beaches are

Just a low-tide sand bar near Naka island, a sailing boat, the island of Koh Yao Yai beyond. As we all remarked on the boat, Phuket is just so crowded and touristy! Sure it can be, but that’s not my Phuket ... so maybe there is a paradise! The speedboat captain slowed down quite a bit on the last 10km before the bridge - he’d never been this way before. a full circuit of Phuket either. By this time we knew that a trip of this kind needs an earlier start! It was nearly 4pm when we dropped anchor just past Sarasin Bridge on the beach next to the Thanoon Seafood restaurant which is actually on the Phang Nga side of the bridge. I’d only been to Thanoon Seafood once before, and I had suggested that it might be suitable for lunch on this trip. It was just about perfect – great view, quick service, cold drinks and easy to park the boat right by the restaurant. Actually a late lunch was good, as by about 4pm you can feel the heat dropping, the light is beautiful. Well, our lunch break finished at about 5pm! This was of course an experimental trip. We learned that an afternoon trip is possible, but it would be much better to start earlier! Sun was already sinking low as we sped down the west coast of Phuket. An earlier plan to be at Phromthep Cape (at the southwest corner of Phuket) was abandoned. We stopped for a short while at Koh Waew, a tiny island close to Bang Tao Beach. Everyone jumped in for a little spot of snorkeling. But time was ticking and speedboats don’t want to be out after dark, so we could not stop long. It was not far from sunset when we left Koh Waew - still
Kids jump off the Sarasin Bridge for a refreshing dip! about 45km to get back to Chalong Bay. Sunset at Koh Waew I guess is not seen by too many people - a peek into the tranquil side of the island’s off Phuket. And then a dash down the west coast passing Bang Tao, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Kata Noi, Naiharn and Ya Nui beaches, rounding Phromthep Cape, past Rawai beach and back to Chalong Bay just before dark. A great afternoon! If you want a trip like this, just ask Easy Day Thailand, the schedule is flexible, there’s a lot of possible stops along the way.. they can work something out for you. I want to do it again :) Jamie Monk blogs about all things Phuket. Visit his website JamiesPhuket.com for more

Netflix finally launches in Thailand, with caveats
A
Bangkok Post
fter years of anticipation, internet streamingvideo service Netflix launched in Thailand last week as part of a surprise global expansion that saw the USbased content provider flip the switch on 130 new countries overnight. “You are witnessing the birth of a global TV network,” CEO Reed Hastings crowed on stage at the US Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week. The news caught almost everyone off guard because Netflix had previously set a goal of being available in most of the world by the end of this year. It looked like the California company had plenty of work ahead of it because it ended December in 60 countries, but not Thailand, where viewers with overseas credit cards and bank accounts have had to use virtual private network technology (VPN) to watch the tens of thousands of television shows and movies available through them. Now, Netf lix is available in 21 different languages – but not Thai – and streaming in just about every market that it had in its sights, with the notable ex-

In Thailand, Netflix is offering a free, no-obligation trial of its service for a month. After that, subscribers can opt and switch between any of three payment plans. Options start with a standarddefinition programming package that can be viewed on only one device at a time for B280 a month. The standard package, at B350 monthly, offers HD content and simultaneous viewing on two screens. Its 420-baht-per-month plan offers four screens and UltraHD content, which requires a 4K television or computer monitor to enjoy. While opening the doors to Thai viewers, Netflix has not added any new Thai-language content beyond the small selection of films it already had. And while the company added support for three new
languages, Thai was not among them. Neither the website, app or subtitles are available in Thai. In his presentation, Mr Hastings said the global roll out is only the first step in very long global effort to add localised content and language support to its service. “[The] launch is like having a baby, but the real work is the next 20 years,” Mr Hastings said. “The real work is to become as popular in Vietnam, Thailand and Brazil as we are in the US.” To do that, Netflix will eventually add Thai-language support and obtain licences for Thai television shows and movies. A significant difference Thailand viewers may not look forward to is the same type censorship used in cinemas here and employed by Netflix in other markets to adhere to local media laws.
ANA Beach Club is once again bringing Thailand’s worldfamous Full Moon Party to the shores of Phuket, with a very special itinerary to highlight the island high season. The first Full Moon Party was held at Haad Rin Beach in Koh Phang-Ngan in 1983. At that time the beach did not have electricity and was only accessible by sea. So one can imagine that the party was all about the nature aspect – the beaches, coral reefs and sea. The area was beautiful, peculiarly wonderful, especially when darkness fell and the full moon shined brightly, illuminating the beach, complemented by the surrounding mountain scene. The full moon still shines supremely beautiful to this day, 32 years later. Back by popular demand on Friday, January 22,
Thailand’s world-famous Full Moon Party will be held at XANA beach Club. The phenomenal night features remarkable DJ sets, thrilling entertainment, an astonishing fire performance and much more! So come, join a select crowd of party people and enjoy Phuket’s finest house music while dancing to the beats. The DJ line-up has been hand-picked for their ability to uplift party crowds, and bring funky beats to the scene, with a line-up that includes DJ De Wachtkamer (Bermudos), DJ Kraiz (Illusion) and XANA’s very own resident DJ WII, whose beats will naturally put you into an “ecstasy dancing spree”! The party kicks off at 8pm with an entry price of B500 that includes one glass of sparkling beverage. For more information and offers, visit angsana.com and xanabeachclub.com

Thalang reclaim “Shezza” Cup Patong’s Imtiyaz Mustaq made 78 runs and took 2 wickets. Photo: Michael Way
CRICKET
T
he Phu ket Cr icket League was back in action last weekend at the Alan Cooke Ground after a short break for the festive period. The first game back was also the first 40 over game to be played after the T20 season and first warm up rounds of the league in December. This game was not only special due to this, but, more importantly, it was the annual Tristan Sheridan “Shezza” Cup game between Patong CC and Thalang CC. The “Shezza” Cup is played every year between these two teams in memory of Tristan Sheridan who played for Thalang, and who unfortunately passed away in 2013. Due to the memory of Tristan both as a fantastic player and gentleman, this annual game tends to inspire both teams to perform well, and this year was no different. With the sunshine beaming down over a lush but hard ACG outfield, Thalang won the toss and selected to bat first. Both teams were unsure of what would be a good total, however, Thalang were eager to bat Patong out of the game, desperate to win back the “Shezza” Cup for Tristan’s parents who had made the trip over to Phuket for the game. A Runhaar and R Bentley opened the Thalang innings. Runhaar is a seasoned “veteran” of the Thalang side, however, it was Bentley’s first game. There were no first game nerves however, as Bentley proceeded to open the batting in confident fashion looking to dominate the Patong opening bowlers right from the start. The score rattled onto 20 in just the third over when Runhaar (7) was cleverly stumped by Van Blerk, failing to return to his crease after playing his shot! This brought G Lane in and together with Bentley, rapidly accelerated the run rate, punishing all deliveries before them. The partnership of 74 was only broken when Lane (28) was caught and bowled by Swart in the twelfth over. This wicket brought Captain A McMillan to the crease and @thephuketnews
he continued where Lane had left off, smashing any and all loose deliveries to the boundary. It was looking to be a very long day in the field for the Patong players and heads were starting to drop. The prize wicket of Bentley came with the change of bowler, the slower pace of Wetherell tempting Bentley into a big shot only to sky it to Hamilton in the deep. The end of a fantastic innings, Bentley departing for 61 off 46 deliveries – possibly a match winning innings. Big hitting H McDonald (2) was next in, however, he didn’t last long looking to hit the ball out the park, only to find the safe hands of Paddy Morton on the square leg boundary. This was the big wicket that Patong needed and it came exactly at the right time as they were desperately trying to stem the flood of runs. M Rehman (65 runs off 32 balls) had other ideas however, and played magnificently before the wiley off spin from Thomas forced an early drive straight to Swart at short mid off who held on to a good sharp catch. M Foster (4) was sent straight back to the clubhouse, clean bowled by Thomas who was enjoying an inspirational spell of aggressive spin bowling. The experienced W Stahmer was next in and played the spin with a watchful eye. McMillan (55) had been playing a captains innings, but was eventually dismissed by Mustaq, clean bowled looking to attack. P Lederboer didn’t last long either, bowled by Mushtaq for a duck and H Sylar stumped off a lovely flighted delivery off Thomas. The Thalang in nings closed with W Sthamer (13) and A Dupont (4) the not out batsman. Thalang had smashed their way to 307 for 9 off their 40 overs, however, they would be kicking themselves after looking to get 400 at one stage. Patong had fought back well with the ball but now faced a mountain to climb with the bat. Thomas was the pick of the Patong bowlers with 3 wickets for 29 runs in 4 overs. After a well-deserved break, Patong openers I Mushtaq and S Raju strode to the crease firmly focused on the
Seemant Raju reluctantly shakes hands with opposition skipper Andrew McMillan after handing over the Shezza Cup. task at hand. The Thalang team was buoyant knowing that Patong were weary after a full day in the field. The first few overs were played cautiously, Patong knowing that an early wicket would be a disaster. However, in the fourth over, Raju (4) was tempted to play at a full swinging delivery off Dupont and was bowled. Definitely not the start Patong were looking for. J Swart (3) was next in but fell to the last ball before the drinks break, well caught by Bentley behind the stumps off Runhaar. With 2 wickets down after 10 overs and well behind the run rate, Patong needed to regroup. S Hamilton joined I Mushtaq after drinks and together started to rebuild the
Patong innings, but tight bowling meant they were always behind an ever increasing run rate. A sharp bouncer from Rehman struck Hamilton on the side of the head, but left the batsman unhurt, but perhaps jaded. The next ball but was a full straight delivery that beat the forward defense of Hamilton (22), clean bowling him. A great piece of aggressive bowling by Rehman. P Morton was the key Patong batsman and took the attack to the first and second change Thalang bowlers. A partnership of 72 runs with Mushtaq followed before the latter was stumped by Bentley for a fantastic 78 runs off 71 balls which included 9 fours. There was a glimmer of hope for Patong now with
the increase in run rate and flagging Thalang bowlers. S Wetherell came to the crease and continued where Mushtaq had left, attacking and scoring at will. Game on! The partnership between Morton and Wetherell was worth a lively 62 runs when Morton (62 runs of 46 balls) was eventually bowled by McMillan. The innings contained 7 fours and 3 sixes. This put Patong well in position to push for the win. Pinch hitter P Sami was elevated up the order, a move which had the desired result, hitting an entertaining 22 runs of a mere 9 balls, only to be bowled by McMillan. D Thomas (5) was next in and firmly focused on each and every available run, so much so that he was run out backing up at the non striker’s end, McMillan deflecting a powerful off drive from Wetherell straight to the stumps. A very unlucky way to go, but perhaps Thalang were making their own luck now. With only a few overs left, A Van Blerk was looking to score off every ball, but unfortunately the rate was just too high and ended not out on 10, together with N
Quail on 7. Thalang won by 25 runs but it was anyone’s game with 5 over left. The game had once again produce inspirational performances by both batsman and bowlers, with a total of 589 runs being scored and 17 wickets taken. Thalang had reclaimed the “Shezza” Cup in fitting fashion. There are cricket matches nearly every Sunday at the purpose built Alan Cooke Ground in Thalang. Five battle for FAT presidency FOOTBALL
F
ormer national police chief Somyot Poompunmuang and ex-Thailand coach Charnwit Phalajivin are expected to battle it out for the country’s top football job in next month’s election. he are among fi e candidates seeking election in the Feb 11 ballot for president of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT). The five submitted their applications to the FI FA-appointed normalisation committee on January 11 – the last day for candidacy registration – at the Sports Authority of Thailand headq uarters in H ua Mark, B angkok. The other three candidates are former national team manager Vanasthana (formerly Thavatchai) Sajakul, former FAT secretary-general Pinit Sasinin and B angkok FC chairman Natthapol Teepsuwan. Pol Gen Somyot, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 at the end of September last year, is backed by Thai Premier League giants B uriram United, Chonburi and B angkok Glass among other clubs as well as King Power Group, which owns E nglish Premier League side Leicester City. Charnwit, also a former deputy chief of the Physical E ducation Department, is seen as Worawi Makudi’s proxy as the incumbent FAT president is not eligible to contest the election. O n Saturday (Jan 9), FI FA’s ethics judges extended Worawi’s temporary suspension for 4 5 more days over allegations of an ethics breach. Worawi, who has been FAT president since 2007, was originally suspended for 90 days by the world football’s governing body in O ctober.
B ut Charnwit, 60, dismissed reports that he represents Worawi’s camp. “I am a representative of the people of the whole country,” declared Charnwit after submitting his application. H e also rejected reports that his move was made in haste after Worawi’s ban was extended. H e claimed he had always wanted to do this. “I t’s the right time,” Charnwit said. “Sometimes you need a disastrous situation to create a hero and we are faced with one of such situations at the moment. am confident that will get enough votes.” H is targets include getting rid of disunity in Thai football circles and helping the national men’s team make their first e er orld Cu a earance at the finals in ussia. E ach candidate must name 18 people who would be FAT executives if that person was elected president. H owever, Pinit and Natthapol have entered the race independents without naming their teams and saying they can “work with anyone”. Charnwit’s team include former Thailand striker Piyapong Pue-on, TPL chairman O ng-art Kosinkha, SCG Muang Thong United executive onnarit ue a a and i a et C chairman Thanet Khruarat. Somyot’s team include B angkok Glass chief Supasin Leelarit, former national team player and coach ittha a aohakul atcha uri C manager Thanawat Nitikanchana, and Suphanburi FC general manager Nat Chayutiman. “I want to solve many prevailing problems and bring in member clubs to help manage Thai football,” Somyot said. Asked about Worawi, Somyot said he did not see anyone as an opponent. “E verybody wants to work for the best interests of national football and has to make sacrifices he said. “Y ou have to give and not take. I want to win back the FAT’s reputation.” There will be 72 voters in the election – 18 each from the TPL and League O ne, 30 from Division Two (regional league) and six from minor competitions. Surawut Maharom, chairman of
the normalisation committee which has been entrusted with the task of overseeing the Feb 11 election, said the panel would announce the names of eligible candidates on Jan 27 after checking their ualifications. Meanwhile, Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) governor Sakol Wannapong on Sunday (Jan 10) issued a scathing criticism of Thai Premier League (TPL) decision to e and the to ight rom to teams, saying “there is no need for it.” The TPL executive board’s decision last Wednesday (Jan 6) to expand the 2016 league has been widely condemned and greeted with protests. Sakol, whose SAT is the govern-
ment’s sports-controlling arm, said he was “surprised by the decision”. H e, however, made it clear that SAT will “not interfere” in the matter. The decision has been aimed at avoiding a lawsuit, which remains a possibility should B E C Tero Sasana in a suit filed ith the dministrative Court to seek the three points the team were awarded and then denied after a controversial game with B angkok United. The 2014 League Cup champions C ero finished th in the team league last season and were to be relegated along with Port and TO T. Last week’s decision means that B E C Tero can retain their place in the TPL in the 2016 season, which is scheduled to get underway next month. A number of TPL teams, including league winners B uriram United, and fans have condemned the move. Sakol said, “I do not agree with their decision to increase the number of teams as it will lead to many problems. There is no need for it.” The governor said he wondered if TPL would have followed the same course in case B E C Tero and Port were not among the relegated teams. “Why the number of teams hasn’t been increased to just 19 or 21 teams? ” Sakol q ueried. “I s it that the TPL wants to help any particular team? ” Sakol said the TPL would have to find a a out the trou le on its own, preferably by communicating and discussing the issue with all concerned parties. “This problem can severely deplete the fan base, especially for the clubs at the centre of controversy. The fans will lose faith in the impartiality of the league,” he said. B angk ok P os t
