CLOSE AT 2AM! ROW BREWING AS PATONG POLICE CHIEF ORDERS HIS OFFICERS TO ENFORCE OFFICIAL BAR CLOSING TIME A PHUKET NEWS EXCLUSIVE
A
major row is brewing in Patong after the town’s police were ordered yesterday (Thursday, August 14) to clamp down on the nightlife industry by enforcing the official 2am closing time. Patong’s police chief, Pol Col
Jiraphat Pochanapan, possibly stung by strong public criticism from Patong’s nightlife business owners over a “request” that they close during HM the Queen’s Birthday (August 12), gave the orders to his men yesterday morning (August 14). Col Jiraphat was not prepared to go into depth about the order. “It’s policy,” he said. “It’s come down from above. I don’t want to damage
Patong’s entertainment industry but I have to do this for security reasons. I can’t tell you any more than what is in the laws of Thailand.” One of his deputies, Pol Lt Col Suthichai Chaiyarat, confirmed the order had been given. “The Superintendent has given an order, which we must follow, that entertainment businesses must close at 2am. We will have inspection teams go

to the [entertainment] areas [to enforce this]. Officers will ask them to close. “We have to apply the law strictly. Sometimes, we will have soldiers join our action, too. “I heard there was some misunderstanding between the entertainment business people and the Superintendent. If they are uncomfortable or unhappy, they can come to talk to us at Kathu Police Station.”

No departure fee: Immig boss Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
T
he superintendent of Immigration Police at Phuket International Airport on Monday (August 11) denied that his officers have introduced an informal toll of B50 on all people leaving the island on international flights. The matter was brought to the attention of The Phuket News by friends of a passenger who was leaving on Sunday night (August 10). They did not want to be named. The passenger got to the Immigration desk to be told, “Fifty baht.” She did not have any Thai money with her and so had to phone the friends who had dropped her at the airport to come back again and bring her B50. She was not the only one. Hundreds of people leaving Thailand, who had already converted their Thai money into other currencies, were caught out by the imposition
of the toll. The scene was described as “chaos” as people who had reached the front of the queue realised that they would have to go out of the immigration hall and back into the main departure hall, wait in a queue to change money back into baht and then join the back of the Immigration queue again. Others shouted out for anyone who might happen to have a stack of Thai B50 notes for sale. When The Phuket News managed to reach the Phuket Airport Immigration Superintendent, Pol Col Prapansak Prasansuk, he said, “I moved here five or six months ago and I learned about officers taking money, which had been happening for a long time. “This happened from the Chinese tourists’ habit of giving officials five to 10 yuan, which they put in their passports before handing them to immigration officers. “When I came to work in
People leaving Phuket are advised to hang onto some Thai currency just in case the fee is demanded. Photo Harmann Linge Phuket I was strict with my officials and I am sure that this behaviour has decreased since July. “It is impossible that this happened because I have CCTV cameras and policemen with
soldiers watching [at Immigration].” On Wednesday, when The Phuket News relayed to him more complaints from readers after the story was posted on the newspaper’s website,
Col Prapansak said he was investigating whether any of his officers were involved in the scam. “I just had a meeting with my commander and officials. I want to thank the The Phuket
News for the information. “We have to investigate the truth first because we had a problem recently with a Danish tourist. He was not happy with the wait in Departures, so he made up a story about our officers [demanding money]. “Plus, we have about 300 immigration officers, 178 of whom were recently transferred in from the Deep South. They have to learn how to work at the airport, so, it may be slow for a while. “There are more than 10,000 passengers day, so that’s hard for the new officers. “We are trying very hard to solved the problems.” On Wednesday night, a reader posted on The Phuket News website, “A group of my friends flew out of Phuket and all six of them, including children, paid B100 each. “My husband flew in 10 days ago to Phuket and he was asked for 5 dollars on the way in and, five days ago, 100 baht on the way out.”
Row brewing as Patong police prepare to enforce official bar closing hours Continued from Page 1 Weerawit Kuresombat, President of the Patong Entertainment Association, was furious. He told The Phuket News, “I just heard that we have to close our businesses [at 2am] on the command of the Superintendent. When he issued the command he was already in Surat Thani [at the police regional HQ]. “It is unfair. This is a tourism area. We will hold a meeting with our members soon about this issue.” The row between police and entertainment owners began on August 10, when Col Jiraphat issued a “request” to 300 bars and restaurants asking that they close for the day, or at least not serve alcohol, as a way of honouring Her Majesty, and to allow employees to spend time with their families – August 12 was also Mother’s Day. Mr Weerawit said on Wednesday, “About 300 business closed all day. But August 12 is not a Buddhist Holy Day, during which alcohol sales are banned.
Now it’s lights out at 2am due to ‘orders from above’. “Entertainment places on Bangla Rd felt they had to close because, in the past, when we got a ‘request’ like this, we knew that it was actually an order and we would be fined if we did not comply. “People did not want to be fined, so they closed. “I did not hear about anyone being fined [on August 12], but maybe it happened. “Pattaya and other places were allowed to sell alcohol on Mother’s Day but [Patong] apparently was not allowed to. “You know, tourists did not understand why the bars were closed. They just did not understand. “This issue smouldered
inside all the business people in Patong. “I absolutely do not agree [with Col Jiraphat’s decision to issue the request to close on Mother’s Day]. I received this document on August 10. It was not approved by the Phuket Provincial Police Office.” The Phuket News received one report about a bar being fined B75,000, but it could not be confirmed. Pol Maj Gen Krajang Suwannarat, Deputy Commander from Police Region 8, and currently acting commander of police in Phuket, confirmed to The Phuket News on Monday that there was no ban on alcohol sales on Mother’s Day. thephuketnews

Stranded Chinese tourists on their way home at last Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
A
bout 100 of 400 Chinese holidaymakers stranded in Phuket, some of them since last Sunday (August 9), were gradually making their way home on Wednesday (August 13) as arrangements were made for them to hop first to Don Meuang Airport in Bangkok, and from there to China. The 400, who arrived on holiday charter flights from Hong Kong with City Airways, were stranded in Paradise when the aircraft that was supposed to take them home again broke down in Bangkok. City Airways is a small airline owned by a group of Thai, Chinese and Hong Kong investors. It has just five aircraft. The number stuck at Phuket Airport grew as more people arrived on Monday and Tuesday for their expected flights. Two hundred of the passengers agreed to be put up in
hotels in Phuket at the airline’s expense, and to enjoy free tours, while the airline tried to sort out the problem. Others preferred to stay at the airport in case they could get an early flight out. In an official statement to The Phuket News the Phuket Office of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Songkhla wrote on Wednesday, “Concerning the incident of Chinese tourists stranded in Phuket, the Chinese Embassy, Consulate General in Songkhla and the Phuket Consular Office attached great importance to the stranded Chinese tourists and [were] committed to protecting their legal rights. “Just after receiving calls from the tourists, the Chinese consular officials took immediate action. First, the [Phuket] office contact City Air, then went to the Phuket International Airport immediately for on-site coordination with City Air and the Phuket authorities. “The Phuket Consular Of-

ficials conciliated the frustrated tourists who were stranded at the airport and persuaded them [to go] back to the hotel [to await] flight information.” Relief arrived on Wednesday with the arrival of an airliner from R Airlines, a Bangkok-based charter line.
Santi Pawai of the Phuket Tourism & Sports Office, said that, under the arrangements made by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Tourism & Sports, R Airlines would fly the tourists to Bangkok, where City Airways would arrange for onward flights.
By Wednesday evening he reported that only about 50 people were still stuck in Phuket. The remaining 350 had flown to Bangkok, and 100 of those had received refunds from City Airways and had then been able to buy tickets on Lion Air that would get them home. City Airways’ first flight took place in October 2012, the start of a charter service between Hong Kong and Bangkok. It now has five aircraft, and operates from Bangkok to Hong Kong, Nanjing and Nanchang, along with daily Hong Kong Phuket flights. This is not the first time tourists have been stranded en masse in Phuket. In February 2012, Air Australia went bankrupt abruptly with debts of B2.9 billion, ceasing all flights and stranding some 4,000 Australians in various airports around the world, including hundreds in Phuket Additional reporting by Darawan Naknakhon

Beach vendors to lobby to go back on the sand M
ore than 500 people gathered at a meeting at the Prince of Songkhla University Phuket Campus on Sunday (August 10) to air their grievances over hardships caused by the mass clean-up along the beaches. Many of those who attended the meeting called for the “Phuket Council” – an ad hoc body set up by the vendors – to lobby the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to allow vendors to go back and do business along the beach. They said they were hoping to seek “justice” from the NCPO so they could get back their livelihoods. Jakarin Jareonjit, a sunbeds and umbrella renter, said that since the beach clean-up many had lost their jobs and have no income to support their families. Some families have had to take their children out of school because they can no longer afford it. Many beach vendors have no other way of earning money because they
have been in the same business for over 40 years, he said. Mr Jakarin added that most tourists prefer to have the option of using a sunbed and umbrella on the beach. “They come to our beaches for the convenience. If we can’t provide such services, tourists will simply find an alternate beach destination in a different country,” he said. Phuket Council leader Palad Jansopin said, “While [the Army] attempt to solve the encroachment problem, we must ensure that no one suffers as a result of it. Tourist service workers must have an opportunity to find alternative employment, or new jobs should be provided for them.” He confirmed that the Phuket Council will gather both negative and positive comments and hand them to the NCPO next month. The council are registering names and IDs and other supporting information to pass on to the NCPO. Suthicha Sirirat

‘white’ status PHUKET PROVINCIAL PRIson officers and Health Department officials conducted a snap search of cells at daybreak last Friday morning (August 8), confiscating contraband items and finding one inmate who tested positive for drugs. Prison director Rapin Nichanon and his guards launched the raid at 5:30am, searching both male and female cells. Officers seized two box cutters, a pair of scissors, a file and 10 belts. Health Department officials also randomly screened 200 of the 2,890 inmates for drug use. One convict tested positive in the urine test. Officials said that the positive test sample came from an inmate who had come into the jail just four days ago, and admitted that he had taken crystal methamphetamine just before the police arrested him. Mr Rapin said, “To preserve our ‘White Prison’ [trouble free] status we will continue to conduct searches once or twice a month, with no warning.” thephuketnews

Dream sparks new search for bones T
he sad mystery of the death of a six-year-old girl in the Parlai area of Chalong found last December 19 is still yet to be solved, but her parents hope that small pieces of bone found recently may offer clues to how she died, and why, or at least bring her spirit to rest. Natthapa “Nong Dear” Tubkaew disappeared on December 6 last year. Two weeks later, a child’s skull and some bones were found on empty land in the Parlai area, about one kilometre, in a straight line, from where she was last seen. DNA tests confirmed that the remains were those of the little girl. Another search by the family for more of Nong Dear’s bones was sparked last month by a dream. Nong Dear’s mother, Jarun Tubkaew, told The Phuket News today, “We started looking for her bones again after my grandchild dreamed about Nong Dear. “She said Nong Dear

More bones discovered where the child’s remains were found, came to her with her hands outstretched, holding some bones, and saying ‘Here are my bones’,” Mrs Jaroon said. The family searched the area where Nong Dear was found, and managed to find a number of bone fragments. Mrs Jaroon admitted that
the bones might be from Nong Dear or they might be from animals or birds. But she still wanted to find out, so the bones were taken to Chalong Police who have sent them for DNA analysis. Despite all the tests, police have so far not managed
to establish how the little girl died or who, if anyone, killed her. Pol Capt Thada Sodarak told The Phuket News, “The previous DNA result showed the bones [found in December] were those of Nong Dear. “When the parents found more pieces and wanted them, too, to be checked, we sent the pieces to the forensic laboratory for matching with the bones already recovered. We are waiting on the result. “Nong Dear is dead. But the parents wanted to make sure, because they said Nong Dear appeared in a relative’s dream saying that they hadn’t collected all her bones yet.” Asked about progress on the case, Capt Thada said, “We don’t know who did it. We checked all the possible suspects, and we did everything we could, but we cannot simply accuse anyone without evidence. We took DNA samples from the suspects and we searched their homes but we found nothing.”

Ma’an Samran, Chief Executive of Cherngtalay OrBorTor told The Phuket News, “Because of the problems on Bangtao beach, drains will be laid to collect the waste water for treatment. “I have received lots of complaints from various people about the construction. But we are laying the drains underground, and this [when finished] will, I hope, be more convenient for those who use these streets.” The water that comes out of the treatment plant will not be totally pure, Mr Ma’an said. “The aim is to process the water to [the equivalent] of grey water. We can use this in Cherng Talay for watering plants and cleaning roads.”
series of undercover operations led Pol Lt Col Jaran Bangprasert of the narcotics suppression police and his team to arrest Uten Wantong last week on charges of possession of methamphetamine. Uten admitted the charge and then gave police invaluable information that allowed them to catch two people much further up the drug supply chain, and seize more than 4,000 pills from major drug dealers on the island. Using the information, they contacted Uten’s dealer and arranged to buy a bag of 10 meth pills (ya bah) from him for B2,000. A meeting was arranged at the PTT gas station near Wichit municipality office on Chao Fa East Rd. After the police staked out the gas station, a Toyota Vigo pickup truck rolled in and the police “buyers” received a coded call: “It’s the time to pick up your kid from Thai Hua School.” The officers moved in and arrested the occupants of the truck, Nucharee Puttha, 36, and Anupong Suwanmart, 27, both from Mae Sai in Chiang Rai. They seized two bags, each containing 10 meth pills and also the two people’s mobile phones. The police then took them to their house in Soi Song Koon in Chalong, where they uncovered another 4,210 pills. Nucharee confessed that she have been dealing drugs for about a year and that Anupong was her supplier. Anupong admitted that he has been in the narcotics

He explained that four years ago he met a man named Daeng from Chiang Rai, who introduced him to a drug agent in Mai Sai, who was a leader of the Black Muser hilltribe. Anupong started transporting the drugs for him, taking consignments to a
man in Nakhon Sawan he named as Ko Lieng. Typically he would carry 50-100 packets of pills and as much as five kilos of crystal meth concealed in his truck. He would be paid between B200,000 and B600,000 a trip, he said. Sometimes he would be paid in product. Anupong said he moved to Phuket last year and decided to deal drugs as well as transporting them. He contacted Ko Lieng to buy ya bah to sell in Phuket but a customer cheated him, and Ko Lieng could not sell
him any more at that time, so he found a dealer in Chiang Mai who could. On July 26 he was hired to transport almost 2.9 million pills and 20 kilos of ice to Ko Lieng’s son in Nakhon Sawan. He was paid in product – 6,000 pills in three packets. He hid two of the packets at Nucharee’s house. It was from one of these that he took the 10 pills to sell to the undercover police. Anupong and Nucharee were both charged with possession of a Category 1 drug with intent to sell.

Islanders mark Queen’s birthday A The Por Tor Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghosts Festival
Food for Hungry Ghosts IN ADDITION TO BEING HM Queen Sirikit’s Birthday and Mother’s Day, Tuesday (August 12) was also the first day of the local Chinese Por Tor Festival, famed for its enormous red turtle-shaped cakes. Also known as the Hungry Ghosts Festival, the seventh lunar month in the Chinese calendar is believed to be the period when the gates of Hell are opened and spirits are allowed to wander the Earth or revisit their former homes. During the festival, people bring food and nicely-decorated fruits to make offerings to the King of the Demons, Por Tor Kong, for him to pass along to the spirits. An essential offering for the festival is a red turtle-shaped cake, large or small.
@thephuketnews
Turtles, in the Chinese belief system, symbolise longevity. The festivities began at Queen Sirikit 72nd Anniversary Park with residents and tourists cheerfully leading a colourful parade through the streets to the market on Ranong Road. Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansuppapana said that this year the city teamed up with Ministry of Tourism and the Office of Culture to help publicise the parade because the City wants tourists to appreciate the diversity of Thai culture. It also wants the island’s ethnic Chinese to continue the festival for future generations. Yesterday evening (August 14) there was another parade of red turtles and fruit to the Por Tor shrine in Baan Bang Neow.
crowd gathered on Tuesday morning (August 12) at Queen Sirikit 72nd Anniversary Park to offer alms to 83 monks in honour of the HM Queen Sirikit’s 82nd birthday. Gov Maitri Inthusut led the blessing ceremony while more than 500 people attended to receive blessings from the head monk. Gov Maitri and many others then went to the nearby Satree Phuket School to sign a book of birthday greetings for HM Queen Sirikit. More ceremonies took place in the evening.

Livestock Department, visited Makro, Big C in Vichit and Tesco-Lotus in Kathu, to check quality and hygiene standards. Many more stores and markets across the island can expect snap inspections in the coming few weeks.
THE PUBLIC HEALTH MINistry is to put its proposals for warning labels on bottles containing alcoholic drinks before the National Council for Peace and Order. The warnings – with images as graphic as those now on cigarette packets – will, it is proposed, cover 25 per cent of the bottle surface. Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr Narong Sahamethapat said the number of teenagers and women consuming alcohol has been on the rise. Eighty per cent of all road fatalities have been linked to alcohol consumption. The ministry is therefore determined to tackle this problem seriously in a bid to reduce the death toll. The warnings must inform consumers of the dangers of alcohol consumption. They must carry the phone number 0-2590-3342, which is for the complaint centre for cases involving cigarettes and alcohol, as well as the hotline number 1422. The proposal to put warnings on alcohol is not new, it dates back at least four years. NNT

POLICE WERE CALLED TO a hotel in Patong on Wednesday morning (August 13) after staff found a guest dead on the bed in his room, with a bloody knife next to him and blood spattered all over the bed. Examining the body – identified as that of a Fedor Vladimirovich Vasilev, 32, from the Siberian city of Yakutsk – Pol Lt Col Teerasak Boonsang and forensics officers found the victim had deep gashes on both arms and seven stab wounds in the chest. Police concluded that he committed suicide. Friends of the victim said he checked into the hotel on
July 19 and was due to check out today to fly back to Russia. “We gathered in front of the hotel this morning to take the shuttle bus and when he didn’t show up, we asked hotel staff to check his room,” one said. A member of the hotel staff said, “The last time we saw him was at breakfast on Monday (August 11) and there has been a ‘Do not disturb’ sign on the door since yesterday.” Police are still collecting evidence, and have been in touch with the Russian Embassy to discuss the case. Two teenagers dead in high-speed car smash TWO LOCAL TEENAGERS were killed in a high-speed crash on Phra Phuket Kaew Rd last Friday night (August 8), just before midnight. The driver, Hassanee Wongton, 18, lost control of the car and smashed into a power pole. He died instantly. When rescue teams arrived they found four teenage girls @thephuketnews
scattered on the road. The girls were rushed to hospital but one, 16-year-old Supitsara Boonmee, was declared dead on arrival. So mangled was the car that it took 45 minutes for rescue crews to retrieve Hassanee’s body from the wreckage. Jutharat Shalim, a friend of the youngsters, told police
that he saw the crash. The car, he said, had just left the petrol station on Phra Phuket Kaew Rd. “I was on the motorcycle behind them and saw the car swerving side to side before it spun in a circle and smashed into the power pole at extremely high speed,” he said. Eakkapop Thongtub

M
other’s Day gave rise to the familiar old “no-alcohol day” issue, one that is close to the hearts of many on this funloving island, and one that spawns a variety of views. First and foremost it has to be considered that Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist nation. And the Kingdom’s principal belief system – while being inclusive and flexible – does, when strictly interpreted, have issues with alcohol on the grounds that it biochemically alters the perception of the miracle of life. This view is shared more vigorously by Thailand’s large Muslim minority, and also others of other faiths. Hence on Buddhist days of major significance, sales of alcohol are prohibited in respect of this faith. Detractors say such days hurt tourism. Well, yes and no. Certainly revenue is lost.

But the spiritual fabric of Thailand is kept intact and its traditions respectfully honoured. And Thailand’s multi-faceted spirituality is a major tourism draw. There’s also another consideration. As moves are afoot to put warning labels on bottles and cans of alcoholic beverages, we are reminded of the reality that alcohol is a potentially dangerous product, especially when consumed in excess, either in binges or on a continual daily basis. Such warnings on bottles will likely have limited impact on tourists who over-imbibe and end up paying for their recklessness by ending up in an accident or fisticuffs. But the warnings will provide a day-to-day reminder that alcohol needs to be respected. As a rule of thumb, once booze starts having more fun with you, than you are having with it, then it’s time
to leave the bar and go home. Not as good as quitting while you’re ahead, but still a useful adage. No-booze days are a feature of Thailand that reflect its faith-driven psyche and meet no opposition from the overwhelming majority of Thais, especially the Buddhist majority. Warnings on bottles of alcohol and a sprinkling of no-booze days through the Buddhist calendar year and on election days is a sensible cocktail for a land where there is no shortage of places to drink socially, especially with increasing public awareness of the dangers of alcohol. So enjoy, but enjoy responsibly. And stock up the day before a no-booze day if you really have to. Alternatively, enjoy this vibrant land and society without any ethanol in your bloodstream. It won’t do you any harm.

What really happened? [Re. Russian tourist found dead in Phuket hotel with 7 stab wounds] Maybe, just maybe the wounds on his arms were sustained in an attempt to defend himself from a knife attacker who then succeeded. Seven stab wounds in the chest and the police conclude suicide! Andy “Pol Lt Col Teerasak Boonsang and forensic officers found the victim had deep gashes on both arms and seven stab wounds in the chest.” I may not believe what the forensic police said about the 7 stab wounds and deep gashes.... that death looks more like a crime disguised in suicide. Immigration scams? [Re. Phuket Airport immigration boss denies ‘tax’ on departures] I f ly in and out of Phuket every three weeks and I am often approached by rogue immigration officers asking
for money for a “Pay for Quick Line” upon entry. They are very well aware when there are no high-level officials present, and when they can get away with it. Riceater Just another one! Gathering anger [Re. Phuket beach vendors lobby to be allowed back on the sand] No wonder they want to be back.... Just run the maths: 50 beach chairs, 200 per chair = B10.000 per day, B300.000 per month, B3.6 Mil per year - How much tax do they pay? Jome They do have a valid grievance and as sect 1912 has pointed out, they have all been paying rent to crooked people for years. The junta have a lot of goodwill at the moment but it is fading and will disappear if they do not go after the crooks in the local government and “influential people” who are the real source of Phuket’s problems and bad press internationally. From the jet-ski mafia, taxi and tuk-tuk mafia, to land encroachment, we all know where the money leads. Andy Do these people want to return to paying bogus ‘land own-

‘Heads must roll’ at NBTC, monitors say T
he National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is another regulatory body that has recently come under fire amid all the changes and restructuring proposed by the military regime. Academics, non-governmental organisations, consumer protection foundations and even some NBTC commissioners have fully supported the idea of reforming the NBTC. It has been accused of lacking transparency, acting in favour of business operators rather than in the public interest, not complying with laws and enjoying too much power to rule or influence the private sector. There is no independent watchdog to monitor and audit the regulator’s operations. “All commissioners must be replaced,” said telecom scholar Anupap Tiralap. “We need those with higher morals and integrity.” Mr Anupap sat on a committee that drafted the Frequency Allocation Act (FAA)
@thephuketnews
and the Telecommunications Business Act. “It is time to refor m NBTC’s management and its operational structures and change impractical regulations to ensure functional transparency after applying the FAA for three years,” said Col Settapong Malisuwan, NBTC's vice-chairman, adding that almost all 95 sections of the 2010 FAA are likely to be amended for the benefit of the country and its people.
The NBTC's legal subcommittee is gathering impractical items that must be amended and will pass them to the telecom committee before submitting them to the junta for consideration. Mr Anupap suggested three steps of reform – immediate, medium and longer term – with a change of NBTC commissioners as a priority. “I judge from their unsatisfactory work and performance from the past until today,” he said.
Mr Anupap gave the problematic prepaid services as an example. He also mentioned that the NBTC has received at least 300 complaints yet the problem has never been resolved. It has also failed to resolve complaints within 30 days as required by consumer protection laws. “The NBTC’s committee must be clear whose side they will take – consumers or operators,” Mr Anupap said. Non-im ED visas due for significant changes IMMIGRATION POLICE IN Bangkok have introduced new rules for extensions of stay for people staying in the country on non-immigrant education (ED) visas, Thai Visa reports. Thai Visa notes that these new rules are expected to be extended to other Immigration offices around the country, but the Phuket Immigration offices were closed today, so it was impossible to confirm whether this will be the case. The r ules for general educational institutions are unchanged, ThaiVisa reports. There are signif icant changes, however, for nonformal schools (religious schools, art and sports schools, vocational school, tutoring schools, skill development schools and – probably – language schools). People studying at such schools may now get an extension of stay for only 90 days maximum at a time, and the duration of the stay based on the study may not be longer than one year from date of entry into Thailand. “For most non-formal schools the 90 day extension is of course nothing new,” Thai Visa notes, “but some immigration offices tended to
give longer extensions than 90 days to these students. That is no longer possible. “A big change is that you are only allowed to study up to one year from date of entry into Thailand. That means that after one year you have to leave the country and maybe apply for a new ED-visa.” A not he r big cha nge, ThaiVisa says, is that the study requirements will be raised from a minimum of four hours a week to a minimum of eight hours a week. Students are expected to attend school four days a week for two hours a day. “It remains to be seen if going to school for two days a week for four hours each day will be acceptable.” A consequence of the eight-hour requirement will be that a course that is currently approved as a three-year course, will now only have a value for 18 months. Huge ‘Golden Triangle’ drugs cache seized MYANMAR AUTHORIties have seized drugs worth US$7.3 million (B234 million) buried in a forest in the “Golden Triangle” border region, police said Tuesday (August 12), raising fears of a boom in the drugs trade in the area. A combined military and police operation in eastern Shan State unearthed a massive stash including blocks of heroin, raw opium and nearly two million methamphetamine pills. “Our government is seriously concerned about the drugs situation,” a senior police officer from the antidrug squad told reporters. “Our crackdown against drug trafficking is ongoing.” Shan State is part of the “Golden Triangle”, a region scored with smuggling routes that covers parts of Laos and Myanmar as well as Thailand, the gateway to the Southeast Asian narcotics market. Myanmar has made several large drug busts in the area this year as it struggles to control a surging drugs trade that is flooding the region with heroin and methamphetamine.
In July, police seized heroin with a street value of US$2.3 million (B73 billion) hidden in a car near the Thai border in the town of Tachileik in Shan State. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says 10 per cent of the world’s opium is produced in Myanmar, making it the second-largest producer of the drug – the base ingredient for heroin – after Afghanistan. Methamphetamine production is much more difficult to trace, with the drug often produced in small, mobile laboratories in remote areas. In June, Myanmar burnt around US$130 million of seized drugs, including some 1.3 tons of opium, 225 kilograms (500 pounds) of heroin and 1.2 tonness of methamphetamine tablets to mark World Drugs Day. Historic artefact appeal made to Japan emperor
A
Chinese organisation has appealed to Japan’s Emperor Akihito to return a 1,300 year-old stele taken from China over a century ago, state media reported. The Honglujing Stele was “looted by Japanese soldiers early last century from northeastern China”, the official Xinhua news agency said, and now sits in “virtual seclusion” in Tokyo’s Imperial Palace. The stone monument, 1.8 metres tall and three metres wide, shows that the first king of the northeast Asian Bohai kingdom was given his title
by a Chinese emperor from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the report said. The China Federation of Demanding Compensation from Japan (CFDC) sent a letter to Akihito and the Japanese government on Sunday (August 10) via Tokyo’s embassy in Beijing, Xinhua reported. “What we are trying to recover is not just the relic itself, but also a symbol of international justice,” it quoted the CFDC president Tong Zeng as saying. The demand comes with relations between Beijing and Tokyo at their lowest point in years, with a territorial row over islands in the East China Sea rumbling against a backdrop of disputes over history. It was unclear what impact including Akihito in the letter would have as the emperor has no power under Japan’s constitution, and all imperial household property belongs to the state.
The palace grounds are open to visitors on only two days a year, but there is no public access to the building itself, where the stele is kept. He declined to comment on the demand for its return, saying: “We have not received any official request.” Japan’s presence in China and Korea expanded after it defeated China’s Qing Dynasty in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 and Russia in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. The stele was taken from an area Tokyo captured from Russia in the latter war and sent to Japan in 1908, the Xinhua report said. Xinhua described the CFDC as a “civic group”, and maintains that it was established in 2006 to seek “compensation for personal, material and spiritual damage caused by Japanese militarism during the country’s aggression against China in the 20th Century”. The South Korean military said Tuesday (August 12) that two conscripts were found dead in apparent suicide, the latest in a series of incidents fuelling concern over young soldiers serving in isolated frontline units. The two unnamed corporals, who were both in their early 20s, were found hanged at one of their homes while on leave, a defence ministry spokesman said. A probe is under way on whether the two corporals were targets of bullying. Five soldiers in the same division were arrested last month on manslaughter charges over the death of a 23-year-old private. An enquiry showed the private had been regularly bullied and physically abused. Last week, all military servicemen were obliged to take part in a day-long “moral education workshop” aimed at stamping out bullying.

In besieged Syrian camp, pianist conjures up hope

n the Yarmuk camp in southern Damascus, the notes escape a piano amid scenes of destruction and the children in Ayham al-Ahmed’s little group sing of hunger and suffering. The music in the Syrian camp, under siege for a year and wracked by violence, seems at odd with the brutality that is all around. It is reminiscent of the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish pianist in the World War II, immortalised in the film The Pianist directed by Roman Polanski. “I loved that movie, which I saw in 2007, but I never thought that I would come to embody such a character,” Ahmed told reporters. In photos posted on Facebook, the 26-year-old plays the piano in streets littered with debris, his face growing thinner with each passing month. Once a thriving neighbourhood home to over 150,000 Palestinian refugees and Syrians, Yarmuk has been reduced to a shell of its former self in the conflict that began in March 2011.

Photo: Studio Babelsberg Caught in fighting between rebels and the regime, just 18,000 residents remain, suffering under a government siege that has caused the deaths of some 200 people in a year, including 128 of hunger. “I weighed 70 kilos between the siege, today I weigh 45,” says Ahmed. Since the end of June, when a truce was reached between the regime and rebels, the siege has been loosened slightly. But the privations in the camp were so serious that Ahmed, who loves to play
Haydn and eastern jazz, evacuated his wife and two-year-old son, both suffering severe anaemia. Under the circumstances, Ahmed’s creation of the “Youth Troupe of Yarmuk” in 2013 was a rare ray of light. “It was important to emerge from the despair we were living in,” he says. When he plays, he says, he feels that “there is once again something good in this life”. Ayham’s father, 62-year-old Ahmed al-Ahmed, is a blind violinist who played with

IN BRIEF ISRAEL
MOZAMBIQUE
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin apologized Monday (August 11) to his Brazilian counterpart for a remark by a foreign ministry spokesperson calling the Latin American powerhouse a “diplomatic dwarf.” The comment in July was made by spokesman Yigal Palmor after Brazil criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as excessive and recalled its envoy in Tel Aviv. In a phone call Monday, Rivlin assured Brazil President Dilma Rousseff that Palmor’s comments “do not correspond to the sentiments of the population” of Israel, Rousseff’s office said in a statement. Rousseff had criticized Palmor’s remarks, saying “Words, including the spokesman’s, sometimes create a very bad climate. In this case, we have to be very careful.” In the phone call, her office said, Rousseff “condemned the attacks on Israel” by Hamas, and “reiterated Brazil’s historic position ... defending the co-existence between Israel and Palestine.
Mozambique’s battling political parties reached a peace deal Monday that could end nearly two years of hostilities, an opposition lawmaker and state media said. The Frelimo-led government and main opposition Renamo – a former rebel movement which has waged a low-level insurgency since 2012 – have agreed to “the cessation of clashes”, according to member of parliament Ivone Soares. The rival parties who fought a bloody 16-year war after independence which ended in 1992, agreed to integrate Renamo fighters into its national security forces, the lawmaker said. They also agreed to give amnesty to all those involved in the latest outbreak of violence. “Everything is in place for it to be discussed in parliament on Wednesday [August 13],” Soares told reporters. The southern African nation’s assembly is now expected to create laws to ratify the reintegration deal, said Soares. AFP

Thailand’s rules about holidays, days off work Jerrold Kippen Tax & Law Expert Duensing Kippen
IN PART 2 OF OUR SERIES on the Labour Protection Act (LPA) we look at the specific rules for time off work. Weekly leave: Under the LPA an employee must be given at least one day off work per week. An exception is made for hotel employees. The employer and the employee may agree that the employee can accumulate and postpone his weekly leave days within a period of four consecutive weeks, to be taken at any time later. Annual leave: An employee who has worked for an uninterrupted period of one year must be given at least six working days of annual leave every year. In addition to this, an employee must be given leave on no fewer than 13 national holidays per year. Again, there is an exception for employees of hotels, entertainment establishments, beverage or food shop, or similar: the employer and the employee may agree that the employee will take leave on an alternative day or days to substitute for the official holiday. Note that the higher requisite “holiday wages” that apply for work on official holidays must be paid to the employee for his work on any such substitution work day. An employer must obtain the employee’s agreement to work overtime or on a holiday. Once again, there is an exception for employees of hotels, entertainment venues, food stores, clubs, or other similar businesses. Their employers may require them to work on a holiday without prior consent.
S ick leave: An employee is entitled to a sick leave as long as he or she is actually ill. However, if an employee takes sick leave for three days or more, the employer may require the employee to present a certificate of illness from a licensed physician or an official medical establishment – a clinic or hospital. Maternity leave: A pregnant employee is entitled to a maternity leave of up to 90 days for each pregnancy. O ther leave: Finally, the LPA also provides many other categories of leave for the employee: for example, leave for: “necessary business”; sterilisation; military training and service, and others. Employers who violate or fail to comply with the LPA may be punished, depending on the severity of the offence, with a fine ranging from B5,000 to B200,000, or imprisonment of up to one year, or both. Toastmasters set to open in Phuket A
ccording to an article posted in the Psychology Today website, “Surveys about our fears commonly show fear of public speaking at the top of the list. Our fear … is so great that we fear it more than death.” For those terrified of public speaking, next month will see the launch in Phuket of an organisation that offers training in speech-making without fear – Toastmasters. There was an attempt in 2002 to launch Toastmasters in Phuket, but it came to nothing. Now “business motivator” and property expert Joanne Bayliss plans to make Toastmasters really work on the island. Here she explains what the organisation is about. What exactly is Toastmasters? It is a non-profit educational organisation that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations. Founded in 1924 and headquartered in California, today the organisation has more than 292,000 members in more than 14,350 clubs in 122 countries.
skills by attending meetings – every two weeks in the low season, and once a month in high season – in the safe and supportive environment using Toastmasters International Educational System, which has been time-tested for 90 years.
Joanne Bayliss: Training in speech-making without fear. Since its founding, Toastmasters International has helped people of all backgrounds become more confident in front of an audience. And what about the new Phuket club? We will have our initial meeting in September. To attend, and become a member, there is a nominal fee to join, which includes a full membership pack. This is a very good opportunity for anyone and everyone to join
the first Toastmasters Club in Phuket. Who are your specific target audiences in Phuket? Groups, organisations or individuals? Everyone who is 18 years or older can be a Toastmasters member. The new club in Phuket will be a Community Club open to everyone. How will members benefit? They will practice their communication and leadership
What’s the greater plan/vision for the coming year, five years – in Phuket, Thailand and internationally? Now we have a Toastmasters Club in Haad Yai and one in Rajabhat University Surat Thani. With Phuket and one more club in Southern Thailand, we can form an Area, and club officers can step up to serve as an Area Governor. Our vision is to build 15 new clubs in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam by June next year to allow people from all walks of life in the region develop their communication and leadership skills. How can interested audiences/ stakeholders get involved/ find out more? For more information or to become a member contact me at info@joannebaylis.com

Developed years (or even centuries) ago, it still remains one of the main beliefs about the country, influencing not only general attitudes but also business. A while ago I got my hands on a handbook that a huge international corporation created for its employees planning a business trip to Russia. The book was a heavy tome with nearly half of it being devoted to various aspects of drinking with Russians. At the time it was published, in the mid-1990s, the
guide was quite handy. New Russian business people shared a weird affection for signing contracts and holding business talks in restaurants and saunas, and inviting a foreign business party to visit one’s dacha (country home) was a perfect sign of respect. The book was quite handy some 10 or 20 years ago, but now it read like a sarcastic saga of a time long gone. The fact is that nowadays Russians consume not much more liquor than other Europeans, and the drinking habits are nearly the same. One has to be extremely lucky to meet a relic of the immediate post-Soviet era who organises business meetings in a sauna with litres of vodka and pounds of caviar.
So is it normal to be a non-drinker in the eyes of a Russian? The answer is yes. It is pretty normal. Should one expect a party instead of serious talks? No, it is very unlikely. Is it okay to celebrate the signing of a contract with a shot of liquor? Yes, if both parties feel like it. Do Russians drink only vodka? Actually, no. You would be surprised, perhaps, how many Russians can be counted as experts in wines or brandies. Is drinking a problem in Russia? Yes, it is a global problem of the contemporary world and Russia is no exception. By the way, “Na zdorovie” is a Polish toast, not Russian. If you want to show respect, say “Vashe zdorovie.”
A BELLYFUL OF BOOZY STATISTICS ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT statistics published by the WHO this May, Russia ranks fourth in the world in terms of pure alcohol consumption among adults . The total average figure is 15.1 litres per capita per year, which puts Russia into the high-risk group alongside Portugal, Poland,

the Czech Republic and others (surprisingly including Andorra). Britain, Germany, France, Australia and New Zeland belong to the second group with a consumption of between 10 and 12 litres per capita). The USA boasts even lower consumption, at 9.2 litres.

THE BIG LIST Double trouble Animals are usually born with one head. Sometimes, mother nature throws a twist in the plans.
Kitten: This purrfectly cute male kitten was bor n with two faces in 2008 in Australia. The Perth kitten made international headlines after it was bor n at the Swan Veterinary Clinic. Sadly, it only survived three days and died after asphyxiating on fluid in its own lungs. The vet nurse at the time told reporters that she was surprised it survived one night, let alone three days. The mother gave birth to three kittens, but only one was born with a “special” face. Piglet: In China, the pig is known as a symbol of fertility. So it was serendipitous when a two-faced pig was born in the small eastern village of Quanzhou in 2007 – the Chinese year of the pig. The press in China hailed it as a “miraculous conception by farmers”. The unique “oinkster” weighed 1.5kg at birth and had two mouth and four eyes (even though it looks like three eyes). Trout: When pictures of a two-headed trout hit the internet in 2012, it raised a lot of concerns. Mostly because the animal was caught in a southern Idaho creek that had been polluted with high-levels of selenium. The J.R. Simplot Mining Company commissioned a study that included photos of the animal that had been bred from wild fish caught in the polluted creek. “Selenium is emerging as a pollutant of global concern,” David Janz, an aquatic toxicology professor at the University of Saskatchewan. “We need to be careful here.” Cow: Born in rural Virginia in 2007, this special cow has three sets of teeth, two tongues – each of which rest on two lower jaws but just one mouth – and two noses with separate airways. In addition, the cow also has one eye socket, which has two eyes in it. Farmer Kirk Heldreth, the owner of the calf, said he artificially inseminated the mother in an effort to produce “the best possible cow”. “Genetically, this is one of my better calves,” Heldreth, who named the cow “Star”, told reporters at the time. Turtle: When Sean’s Casey’s A n i m a l Re s cue store in New York i n 2008 collected a bunch of eggs after an adult female turtle was killed by a car in Florida, few realised it would hatch with two sets of eyes peering out. Casey, the shop owner, nursed the turtle to health. Each head was fed by hand (otherwise they fight over food) and have outlived the usual time frame for a deformed turtle, though it is not expected to live to the average age of 75 to 100 years. In a sad twist, the turtle was ultimately stolen from the store.

Toilets in the spotlight at new Prague museum T oilets, bedpans and other must-haves for nature’s calls from around the world are on display at a museum in Prague that claims to be the largest of its kind. Rows of toilet paper, bathroom vessels of all types, shapes and sizes and cistern pulls made of china, wood and brass are the stars of the show at this museum of relief in the Czech capital. “We bought a 10th-century fortress near Prague and discovered a historic toilet there,” says Jan Sedlacek, a 59-yearold civil engineer and head of the Museum of Historical Chamber Pots and Toilets. “That’s how it started: we wanted to know how people did it back then,” he said, pinpointing the moment he
became a toilet collector. T he mu s eu m , wh ich opened at the fortress in 2010 and moved to Prague this year, now boasts 2,000 items, which Sedlacek says makes it the world’s largest ahead of similar venues in India and Spain.
“We keep looking for items with history,” he said, pointing to a bedpan made out of a World War II German army helmet. The collection also features a hard-to-get Japanese “Washiki” squat toilet, a bedpan built for Napoleon
and portable urinals used by women during long sermons delivered by the 17th-century French preacher Louis Bourdaloue. “The most precious exhibits are the price of a very decent car,” Sedlacek said. Employing his wife and some of his six children at the museum, Sedlacek has spent around 10 million koruna (360,000 euros, $480,000) of his own money on the collection. Spanning two storeys of an old house, the museum welcomes around 600 people a month – revealing secrets old and new. “Some see a bedpan with a lid and cry: ‘Look, Jesus, we’ve been eating soup out of this our whole lives!’” Sedlacek said. “Human Ken” makes doll of himself
Someone’s offering B100,000 for this coin EVERYONE IS SMASHING their piggy banks and searching under the sofa after an antique shop announced it would pay B100,000 for a rare B10 coin. In 1990 only 100 coins in that denomination were produced for an exhibition abroad, of which only half made it back to Thailand. “Only 50 coins made it back to Thailand,” Punnawat Siriruengwanich, owner of Panun Jewelry Shop in Rayong said. “Only five of these coins have been found, as far as I know.” That would mean another 45 or so are floating around out there. Could it be in your pocket? Did you just trade one for a street sausage? A crazed search has taken off since the announcement, and despite suggestions it is a hoax, Punnawat said he’s serious. He said an unnamed businessman contracted him to search for the coins. The treaure hunt’s popularity forced him to change his number. “I did not expect that it would be such a massive trend,” he told Khaosod. “My phone almost burned down.” Coconuts Bangkok
WHILE MOST 20-SOMEthings tend to spend their money on living expenses, Brazil’s “Human Ken” doll used it on his face. Celso Santebanes, a selfproclaimed model and actor, has spent nearly £30,000 to look like the plastic Ken doll. He has gone under the knife several times with plastic surgery having been done on his jaw, nose, chin, in addition to the silicone implants in his chest. But he insists he is not yet finished with his “work”. “I think I’m 90 per cent of what I want to be. I intend to do more surgeries, but do not know what. For now my investment is being in the gym, for Ken is strong and I
am skinny. “As I work with my aesthetic, I must take care of my body as well.” So how can he afford all of these procedures? Santebanes charges between £6,000 (B323,00) and £10,000 (B540,000) for appearances, a Brazilian newspaper reported. He is set to star in a reality TV series this year and has
already been in talks with a notable fashion house in Brazil for an ad campaign. Santebanes, who has thousands of fans following him on social media, won a modelling competition at age 16 which is around the time friends began to remark on how much he looked like a Ken doll. Now, several years (and surgeries) later, the Brazilian is proud to announce that a doll that resembles him will hit the market next year, first in Sao Paulo. “I went to the city to become a model, I never expected to have a toy myself. I imagined to be a human puppet, but one done with my image was something unexpected,” the 20-year-old said.
Man beats cops in doughnut contest; gets arrested
One dolphin, two heads – A 39-year-old gym teacher in Izmir, Turkey was walking along the beach when he spotted the remains of a two-headed dolphin that washedup on the shore. The mammal was just under 1-metre in length and is suspected to have been just over a year old. “I couldn’t take it in at first. I though my eyes were playing tricks on me... I was completely shocked,” the man told the Daily Mail.
THINGS WERE SWEET when Bradley Hardison downed eight doughnuts to win a local eating contest at an anti-crime event hosted by local police in North Carolina. But he was left with a bitter tast after news of the 24-yearold’s victory got the attention of Camden County Sheriff Lt. Max Robsen, who had tried to question Hardison for a year about local robberies. “I said, ‘Congratulations on your win last night,’” Robeson told local reporters about the incident, before he arrested Hardison on criminal charges of breaking and entering. thephuketnews

Strikingly serene: Buddhist art
A
rt inspired by Buddhism abounds across Phuket, and some fine examples can be found and purchased here, notably in the art galleries of Phang Nga Road, Phuket Town. Art forms originating from the belief system developed on the Indian subcontinent following the historical life of Siddhartha Gautama, around 2,600 years ago, and thereafter evolved by contact with other cultures as it spread throughout the continent of Asia. Budd h i s t a r t followed believers as the faith spread, adapted, and evolved in each new host territory. From the 1st to the 7th centuries, Buddhist art in Thailand was greatly influenced by direct contact with Indian traders as well as the expansion of the Mon kingdom, leading to the creation of Hindu and Buddhist art inspired from the Gupta tradition, with many monumental statues of great virtuosity build across what is present-day Thailand. From the 9th century,
Thai art fell under the influence of Khmer art in the north and Sri Vijayaart motifs in the south, both of Mahayana faith. During this time, Buddhist art was notable for its elegant fluidity, fondness for multiple creations of Bodhisattvas. From the 13th century, Theravada Buddhism was introduced from Sri Lanka around the same time as the ethnic Thai kingdom of Sukhothai was established. The new faith inspired
highly stylized images in Thai Buddhism, with sometimes highly geometrical and almost abstract figures. D u r i n g t he Ay ut thaya period (14th-18th centuries), the Buddha came to be represented in a more lavish manner with sumptuous garments and jeweled ornamentation. And many Thai sculptures and temples tended to be gilded. Today’s Thai Buddhist art draws on all of this rich and wonderful legacy.

early 300 paintings portraying the beauty of Ranong are currently on display at the National Gallery Bangkok until the end of this month. The pieces were created by 137 artists, art instructors, independent artists and former students who all received scholarships from the General Prem Tinsulanonda Statesman Foundation’s Education Fund for the Promotion of Art Creation during a five-day art camp held in the southern coastal province in May. The art camp was organised for the 12th year with the aim of providing a platform for the art scholarship recipients to create works alongside many of the country’s leading artists. National artists who participated this year included Prof Decha Warachun, Amrit Chusuwan, dean of Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts and Chinoros Rungsakul, dean of Thaksin University’s Faculty of Fine Arts. Among the works being exhibited are a selection of paintings by primary and secondary students in Ranong. The “Art Camp 2014” exhibition will end on Aug 31 and all proceeds from sales of the art pieces will go to the aforementioned education fund. The National Gallery is home to the best public collection Thailand. The building itself is architecturally impressive, and was originally built to be the Royal Mint. Constructed in a Western style and completed in 1902, the building was modelled on a factory in Birmingham, England. Housing both a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, The National Gallery offers quite a bit
more than most of Bangkok’s numerous art museums and galleries. The contemporary art section is located on the ground floor with exhibition rooms to the left and right of the main entrance. The artwork, all by Thai artists, shows influences from cubism, impressionism and surrealism. In the Celebration Room, works by King Rama VI and His Majesty King Rama IX, can be seen. The upstairs rooms are dedicated to traditional Thai art, most being tempura paintings in the Bangkok style of the 19th century and the late Ayutthaya style of the 17th century. The rooms across the courtyard are used for temporary exhibitions of Thai artists. There are usually one or two exhibitions there at any given time. Relatively small in size, a visit to the National Art Gallery normally takes visitors between one and two hours. Enabling the disabled
T
uesday (August 12) marked the 50th anniversary of the Siriwattana Cheshire Foundation under the Royal Patronage of HM the Queen Bedridden for more than five years after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, Boonruay Saekow conceded his life back then could not have been more useless. “I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was only 15,” recalled Boonruay, now 45. “At 20, my family sent me for treatment at Chulalongkorn University Hospital because I was totally dependent on others. My only activity was to stay in bed, doing nothing.” After a year in hospital, Boonruay was referred to Sawangkanives, a home for the elderly in his province of Samut Prakan, where he was provided with sessions of regular physiotherapy until he was able to do some basic activities like eating and taking a shower despite being in a wheelchair. Boonruay was then asked if he wanted to return home. “I did not want to be a burden to my family, so I refused to be sent home. The Siriwattana Samut Prakan Home was then suggested to me,” he explained. Siriwattana Samut Prakan Home is the first shelter in Thailand for people with disabilities, founded and operated under the long-established Siriwattana Cheshire Foundation under the Royal Patronage of HM the Queen. This year, the foundation marks its 50th anniversary. The brainchild of Lord Leonard Cheshire, founder of Leonard Cheshire Disability, who initially donated his residence as the first sanctuary for the disabled in London in 1948, was set up in 1964. Today, there are more than 240 Cheshire Homes for people with physically and mentally impairment worldwide. In Asia, these Cheshire Homes are in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. In Thailand, Thanpuying Ngamjit Burachat initiated and promoted the establishment of the Cheshire Home by acting as the foundation’s first president. The Siriwattana Samut Prakan Home in Samut Prakan province was the first Cheshire Home in Thailand. Later similar homes for the disabled were founded in Pathum Thani, Chiang Mai, Phetcha-

buri and Roi Et province. Kamolvan Punyashthiti, vice-chairwoman of the Siriwattana Samut Prakan Home, said that there are approximately 25 people with disabilities residing at the shelter and the objective is to provide them with support, not just physically and emotionally, but also occupationally. “This place is a home, not a hospital,” said Kamolvan. “So despite being physically or mentally impaired, we encourage our residents to stay active and get a job so that they can earn a small income. “We do not want them to stay in bed or in a wheelchair, doing nothing. We encourage empowerment.” And Boonruay is a good example of a physically-impaired person who works and earns a living. He is wheelchairbound and his fingers are distorted due to rheumatoid arthritis, but he draws and paints. And this activity earns him around 800 baht per month, aside from the government’s disability monthly pension of 600 baht. “After I first moved in here, I was thinking of doing something more productive than sitting in a wheelchair all day long,” he recounted. “So I learnt how to to write and I started sketching. My earlier works were only in black and white because water colours were too difficult to handle. But after practising, I became familiar with the tools and technique. Now I produce an average of two paintings a day.” Boonruay’s 54-year-old companion Chaiyuth Homhuan moved into the Siriwattana Samut Prakan Home four years ago, following a fatal car accident that resulted in the amputation of both legs.
public events organised by the foundation. Yet she has encouraged all the disabled living at the home to work as a way to gain not just money but also physical and emotional strength. To her the disabled should be able to do things like the able-bodied. “When we see people with disabilities, we usually feel pity for them,” she said. “We therefore give them money because we believe it can buy them a better life. This is not necessarily true. Disabled or not, what’s essential is support, both emotionally and occupationally. With support, life can be more liveable and more secure.” Bangkok Post

Like Boonruay, Chaiyuth chose not to return to his family. “Now I am a motorcycle repairman,” said Chaiyuth, proudly. “And I earn some money. This way I’ve become somewhat important again despite my physical impairment.” A native of Samut Prakan, Chaiyuth is visited by his mother once in a while. Today he has no fixed income as it depends on the number of customers and how much work needs to be done on the motorcycles. “But at least I am selfdependent, financially.” Kamolvan said that the Siriwattana Samut Prakan Home is mainly run on donations, as well as from proceeds from

Opposition to dolphin show mounting
E
nvironment, animal and marine academicians, activists, conservationists, lobbyists, protectionists and practitioners continue to gain ground in their efforts to raise awareness in Phuket about the plight of dolphins. Opposition to the opening of the island’s first dolphinarium, being developed in Chalong on the south of the island, is growing rapidly, with momentum fueled last Thursday from two public screenings in Phuket of the award-winning documentary The Cove (2009). An initial afternoon screening was held at the Prince of Songkhla University Phuket, to which hundreds of undergratuate students attended, while an evening screening followed at the open-air courtyard of Central Festival Phuket. Organized by Sea Shepard Global with Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project, and reinforced with the support of various local NGOs and the greater environmentally-conscious community, the screenings proved to be effective in shedding light on the agenda behind the multi-billion-dollar global dolphin trade. “Some students at PSU approached me after the movie and they wanted to do something about it [the opening of a dolphinarium in Phuket],” remarked Dr. Chantinee Boonchai, environment and international education lecturer at PSU Phuket. “They are gathering signatures to oppose the dolphinarium and will write a letter to the governor. They are planning to do an on-site protest as well.” Meanwhile, Phuket Governor Maitri has been formally briefed on the situation and movement, and has expressed sympathy with the opposition, at least in a closed-door meeting with officials on August 8. However, up to this point, the project’s developers seem to have done everything by the book; thus there is little the government can do to hault the opening of
A team from SeaBeas Diving were among the spectators at Central. the tourist attraction, granted all proper procedures are followed accordingly. Nancy Gibson, Chief Executive and Founder of the Love Wildlife Foundation, who has been a key player in the protection of wildlife in Southeast Asia including dolphins, explained that there were four “dolphinarium” facilities here, but now only three in business. One of them, the Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya, no longer has dolphins, she explained, as it does not possess the permits to catch new dolphins to replace the many that had died there under the radar. The three remaining facilities in Thailand include Safari World, in Bangkok, Oasis Sea World in Chanthaburi and Pattaya Dolphin World & Resort. Of these, Safari World is the only one importing their dolphins. It’s illegal to catch dolphins in Thai waters. Nancy also noted that the dolphinarium opposition in Phuket has the support of Thai Tuna Companiess,
who are in the “dolphin safe” program. “Phuket is a big port for the tuna companies, and Phuket would not be dolphin safe by bringing them [tourists and dolphins] in for shows,” she said. Meanwhile, Phuket Aqua Project Co Ltd’s application for the facility has been handed over to the Department of Fisheries’ head office in Bangkok, confirmed Kiattikhun Charoensawan, chief of the Phuket Fisheries Office. “Phuket dolphins are loved and a symbol of our ocean beauty and health. Displaying imprisoned wild caught animals says Phuket ‘doesn’t care about the Ocean’, but only about profit, and is a backwards step for eco tourism,” concluded local businessman and environmental activist, Nick Anthony. A small on-site protest is planned for September 1. For more information, go to Facebook.com/ event/346195525505289/

very now and then, you might come across a peculiar looking spider in Phuket that stands out from the more abundant “daddy long leg” species found in tens of thousands of dark corners throughout the island. One particularly eye-catching Arachnida is that of the Argiope genus, which has more than 70 known species, referred to by varying names across the globe, including the golden-orb spider, wasp spider, yellow-and-black garden spider and the X-spider, for example. In Thai, the Argiope genus is called mang moom noong sin and the most common species found here is the versicolour argiope, found in forests, orchards and where there is a good breeze. This spider tends to have a variegated yellow, white, orange and/ or reddish brown striped pattern on its abdomen, and a bi-coloured pattern extending onto it is legs, which tend to be in pairs, making

ello again, Last month we practised the plank pose, excellent for arm and core strength. This month, I thought I would give you its mirror image, Purvottanasana otherwise known as reverse plank or table pose. The Sanskrit word purva translates as east, in yoga this means the whole front of the body from your tippy toes to your forehead (third eye, if we want to really get down with the yogi). This posture feels great and is always nice in the morning, when the early sunlight washes over you. I like to think of surrendering my body to the awesome electrical powers of the sun, however the magnetic powers of the moon is just as lovely and the table pose under the super moon last Sunday night was magical. Similar to the downward dog, this asana is great to combat fatigue and the two can be practised together to create a great energy boosting combination. Not only is a great way to combat daily tiredness it also: Improves the rotation of the shoulder joints Strengthens the wrists, ankles, legs, bottom, back and neck Stretches the front body – shoulders, chest, stomach, front ankles Expands the chest – great for easier and deeper breathes As you probably know from past months, I am a big advocate of keeping ours wrists healthy, strong and flexible. We use them a
lot and their value should not be underestimated, and Purvottanasana is a great asana that is beneficial for the wrists. Let’s look at the steps to getting you practising this beneficial yoga pose. 1. Start in a sitting posture with your legs extended out front and your palms just behind the hips, fingers facing forward. 2. Bend you knees and place your feet about a hand span away from your bottom. 3. Curl your tail-bone upward a little and press the hands and the feet evenly onto
Thailand on heightened alert for Ebola outbreak
O
fficials in Thailand are preparing to declare Ebola a dangerous contagion, but maintain that the disease has not yet been detected in the kingdom. Health authorities are closely monitoring the Ebola virus outbreak in Africa and are putting in place measures to detect any possible spread of the infection into Asia, said the Permanent Secretary of the Public Health Ministry, Dr Narong Sahamethapat. The most likely place that a member of the public could get infected by the Ebola virus is at an international airport, so the Public Health Ministry has implemented a surveillance program in Thailand to monitor the arrivals of travelers from around the world. Officials will apply the same standard of disease screening as was used with avian flu and the severe acute respiratory syndrome, and are maintaining readiness at state hospitals across @thephuketnews
the country. The Ministry is preparing to declare Ebola a dangerous contagion, with similar declarations made in the past for cholera, yellow fever, plague, smallpox and Sars. Dr. Sophon Mekthon, the Director General of the Department of Disease Control, said the Ebola virus is not present in Thailand but the possibility of its introduction is being closely monitored. The Ministry of Public Health has taken measures to screen visitors from the danger zone, especially those who have traveled from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, by focusing on checkups at five airports including Suvarnabhumi airport,
Don Muang airport, Chiang Mai airport, Udon Thani airport and Hat Yai airport. Meantime all hospitals have been instructed to be prepared. There are 21 people who have traveled here from countries with an Ebola outbreak and who need to be closely monitored. If no symptoms are detected within 21 days, they are considered safe There is still no vaccine or specific medicine for the disease but any patients will be treated according to their symptoms with methods similar to those used in foreign countries. Up until August 4, 1,603 patients had been diagnosed in Africa, with just over half of them fatal cases. NNT

Why we shouldn’t confuse schools with businesses THE WAY I SEE IT
Richard Thézé info@headstartphuket.com

E
stablished in 1440 by Henry VI, Eton College is one of the most prestigious schools in England and is arguably among the best schools in Europe and probably the world. It has educated 19 British Prime Ministers and generations of aristocracy. It is, therefore, more than a little disturbing to learn that the headmaster at Eton College, Tony Little, recently warned that a generation of teachers risks being turned into “functionaries in a service industry” because of a relentless focus on exam targets in schools. People love ratings in all fields of human endeavour and consumer reports have expanded coverage from products to services of every category. Like hospitals that are rated on patient satisfaction, schools are increasingly becoming rated on the satisfaction of both students and parents. Like hospitals, there is an expectation that schools will admit all who show up at their door and effect positive outcomes regardless of the conditions with which students present. In both education and medicine, the past history of those served plays an overwhelming role in determining outcomes. We do not blame hospitals if they are unable to cure lung cancer where patients have smoked all
their lives. However, we do expect schools to publish evidence of learning progress even when students come from the most chaotic backgrounds. That said, my concern goes even deeper than that of Mr Little. There seems to have been a worrying shift in recent years towards a consumerist ethos that has more in common with a “Have it Your Way” fastfood burger chain than with sound principles relating to the most effective way to educate our children. The role of teachers is becoming increasingly to take note of what parents require and then ensure that those requests are fulfilled. Students are becoming increasingly like “clients” to be served by teachers such that it seems education really is becoming a service industry. The trouble is that when power shifts to parents, schools become like businesses because the customer is always right. This means that teachers relinquish their professional judgment, since they are employees. I do not believe that teachers losing their professional ability to make decisions in the best interests of the child will benefit students. Most lay-people simply do not possess the specific knowledge required to make sound educational judgments. That is

why most professional institutions employ trained specialists. Surely education should be the same. Education professionals need the autonomy to make decisions that they know are in the best interests of the children entrusted to them. This does not mean cutting parents out of the learning process. Instead, it means getting parents more involved. It means informing parents of what the child needs to make progress and then proceeding with the required teaching. As part of this, teachers should provide access to educational material so that parents can become involved in reinforcing the child’s learning at home. In sum, making decisions about a child’s education requires specialist knowledge of what children need. Teachers are trained to understand the educational needs of children and they have the skill-set required to meet those needs. Education is not a service industry and students are not clients. Education is a system that provides students with knowledge and the ability to comprehend that knowledge. It is time to halt the decline of education. Teachers need to reclaim their status as education professionals and parents need to learn to accept that this is what is in the best interests of their children.

Some restaurants offer a superior setting with mediocre food, or superior food with mediocre setting. KanEang@PIER offers both superior food and setting.
L
ocated on a stunning 200-metre stretch of water-front property overlooking beautiful Chalong Bay, KanEang@PIER restaurant is the ultimate in dining destinations. The name of the restaurant, commonly just called Kan Eang, (pronounced Gun-Ang), roughly translates to “Feel at Ease”. The thatched covered buildings blend perfectly with the enormous and venerable Tamarind and Palm trees. There is an abundance of natural wood used, uniquely blending traditional style with modern chic décor creating an incomparable setting. Plus, the car park is conveniently located directly across from the entrance. For starters, we had bua tod, batteredfried fresh water weed with shrimp. Similar to soft-shell crab, this is a favourite market fare for Thais and is popular across the island. It is even tastier when added with the house sauce of tamarind and red chilli. The batter was light and golden in colour, not an overpowering taste, and perfect with a little kick from the sauce.
Our BBQ’d fresh Mong fish arrived beautifully presented with the meat soft and falling off the bone. The flesh was tender and tasted lightly sweet with a firm flaky texture. The taste clearly reflects the decision to BBQ it with coconut husk rather than charcoal, adding a smoky flavour. The fish was paired beautifully with another homemade sauce of tamarind and chili, this one with Thai onion added, although the fish really did not need anything! Fried fresh cuttlefish, KanEang style served with spicy seafood sauce arrived next and was very lightly fried (at first I thought it was BBQ). The chunky bits of the cuttlefish were delicious but for me the spicy sauce was just too much. Thankfully the cuttlefish did the job on its own! King prawns in tamarind sauce was next in our quinate of dishes and the prawn meat easily fell out of their tails, had a firm texture and whilst they were served with caramelized onions and coriander, you could still taste the buttery flavor of the prawn. For me this was the tastiest meal of the night, which was perfectly balanced with vibrant, fresh flavours. Then it was time for our final dish. A mustard-yellow colour, flecked with red chilies, the crab and coconut palm heart curry served with steamed noodles was the most eye catching dish of the night. The flavour of the curry would sit with you for 30-40 seconds before the chilli spice kicked in. An intriguing meal that was complimented by savoury and slightly salty crab meat (Andaman Blue crabs), lots of vegetables, and for me it was a real bonus for it to be served
with noodles instead of yet another bowl of rice! Clearly my dining partner agreed, as she said the crab curry was her favourite dish of the night. Midway through the meal, a jazz trio started to play, providing a lovely background of easy tunes which added a certain ambience to the night. There are several dining options available, three with air-con and some open air salas available as well as several outdoor tables. KanEang is very family friendly and can easily accommodate larger groups. They of course have smaller tables and nothing says romance like dinner for two by the ocean, hearing gentle waves lapping (almost) at your feet. So KanEang@pier can please all people, and based on the excellent service we received, I think they please them all the time! After a much needed and well deserved break, our coconut almond ice-cream served in a coconut shell with water chestnut arrived. We both swooned and tucked in. The ice cream was creamy and delicious. The texture and crunch added by the almonds was beautifully balanced, and after three minutes of silent eating we had both changed our minds to what was the best dish of the night! We left feeling satisfied and full, not stuffed and bloated. In summary, the food is light, tasty and fresh, and inbued with a distinct Thai flavour to a number of traditional seafood dishes.

The majestic Cowichan Bay. Photo: dani0010
A calling for Canada valley. There, we walked for a short while amidst gigantic trees, aged up to 500 years old. Port Alberni is an affordable waterfront community at the heart of the west coast of Vancouver Island, situated at the end of a 48-kilometer-long inlet and offer access to wilderness so amazing, you will only realize it by coming here. Our surroundings are incredible. Surging rivers filled with salmon and trout compete for attention with a rainforest of gigantic trees towering more than 61 meters into the heavens. We had a light lunch in a restaurant with live goats on the roof, called village Coonps, before driving back home to prepare the fresh salmon we bought for dinner. This was an excellent meal.

T
he word “vacation” tends to conjure up an image of bathing suits, pristine beaches on a virgin island complete with succulent coconut nectar and swaying palm trees. But for many of us who live and work in the tropics for most of the year, an atypical dream holiday to some barren wilderness on the far stretches of the planet has a growing appeal. One well-known Swiss expat on Phuket, Hansruedi Frutiger, recently laid down his demanding hat as the General Manager of Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket (temporarily of course), to explore some of the expansive coastal-mountain wilderness of the majestic North American continent – and he kept a detailed log of his entire month-long trip for our reading pleasure. Starting in Phuket, Hans flew to Vancouver via Hong Kong. In Canada, he visited Nanaimo, then Whistler Mountain and MS Zuiderman, and ventured on a cruise-liner to Alaska, before returning to Vancouver, Hong Kong and back to work in Phuket. Following are the logs for the first of several parts of his trip:
Day 1: I left Phuket at 5pm on a Dragon Air flight for Hong Kong, a three-hour-and-30-minute flight. Transferred from a smaller airport to the main airport and departed on Flight CX888 leaving Hong Kong at 1am for Vancouver. After the 12.5 hour flight, I arrived on the same date I left Phuket! and checked in at the Radisson Airport Hotel which is 10 minutes’ drive from the Airport, a simple straight forward 3 and 1/2 star layover hotel. Day 2: At 11am I took a small 12-seater seaplane from Vancouver Seaport to Nanaimo visiting and staying in the house of friends from my time in Malaysia. Nanaimo has many parks and walkways, providing a variety of outdoor activities. It is centrally located on the east coast of Vancouver island. With a growing community of retirees, it’s quiet with fresh air, surrounded by hills and some wilderness. The shopping scene in Nanaimo offers the best of all worlds with major big names and smaller retail shops, with small rustic restaurants. But I enjoyed cooking at my friend’s home, with a grand view of the ocean and Vancouver in the distance. We enjoyed

Day 7: We took it easy. Bought some warm clothes for my trip to Alaska, just in case it gets cold and wet. In the afternoon we watched some movies, and had dinner outside at Quality Bayside Inn – Parkville, a nice Terrace Restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.
a great homemade Lasagna. Due to jet lag, I went to sleep earlier. The sun rises about 5am and sets 9.30pm.
Day 3: We went whale watching in Cowichan Bay, about an hour drive from Nanaimo, which is said to be the best place to witness killer whales (Orca). From the early 1900s Cowichan Bay attracted sportsmen from all over the British Empire for superb salmon fishing. It was, for a time, the Salmon capital of the world, offering not just fishing, but fine sailing waters, an annual regatta and, next to Wimbledon, the oldest grass tennis courts in the world. Day 4: We drove to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia province, located near the southern tip of Vancouver Island. It is a medium-sized (approx. 350,000 in Greater Victoria, including the Saanich Peninsula) and beautiful, garden city with very expensive villas overlooking the ocean. Walking is an easy, free, and fun way to explore the entire downtown area. Make your way from hotel to museum to shops; stop for coffee; stroll along the harbor side; grab a pint and some fish and chips – take it in! Day 5: We drove to Tofino-Long Beach, where we enjoyed a great seafood lunch in town. Our hotel was located right on the beach. Most visitors come to Tofino for beachcombing, storm watching, surfing, kayaking, fishing, whale watching, if not soaking in the hot springs. Others come for hiking along trails through ancient rain forests with bald eagles and black bears. For most though, it’s the marine life that is spectacular. It’s more than whale watching, it’s an all-out ocean discovery. Pull on your wetsuit under the canopy of old growth forest. It’s just part of the magic when you surf in Tofino. Not for me, though, I just took some photos of the more adventurous, agile sports persons; an easy walk on the beach was all the fulfillment I needed. Day 6: We drove back, stopping at Port Alberni to purchase fresh salmon, before stopping at Cathedral Grove, which is nestled in the Cameron River
Day 8: At around 10am, I said goodbye to my friends and boarded Harbor Air flight 1128 from Nanaimo Harbor to Vancouver Harbor. The weather was awesome and so clear. I sat next to the pilot, again, and took my Go Pro camera along to film the flight. A thrilling 20 minutes later, we landed in Vancouver, where I boarded my next flight to Whistler mountain. This 40-minute flight was yet another unforgettable journey, over rustic mountains, forests and glaciers. Stay tuned for the next part of his trip, to Whistler Mountain and cruize to Alaska, to be published in a fortnight.

Pearl glistens with history Dr Siripattra Kusuwan Na-ranong reflects on historic hotel’s past, present and future Steven Layne editor3@classactmedia.co.th
A
30-something light-skinned Thai female of Chinese ancestry wearing a black dress sits patiently at a window-side table at the coffee shop on the ground floor of the Pearl Hotel. I’m a little late, but she’s on time. There are several customers, Asian and Western, sipping coffee or enjoying a casual late lunch to the backdrop of a peaceful urban scene outside. Traffic on the partly-shaded Montri Rd is light, and pedestrians are moving about the three-storey shop-houses on either side of the twolane street. This was once the heart of Phuket, before
Central Festival, before all the tourists flocked to the beaches en mass – all the business and entertainment centered around the vicinity of this hotel. And it is in this 12-floor, 212-room iconic development – Phuket Town’s first high-rise opened in 1976 – where some of the most important politicians and people in Thai society made their stay on state and leisurely visits to the island in decades’ past. The VIP guest list includes most of the Thai Royal family (including the Crown Prince, Princess Mother and Princess Sirindhorn), several Prime Ministers (General Prem Tinsulanonda and Chuan Leekpai, for example), Thai superstars (Tongchai “Bird” McIntyre, for example), and several members of the Royal family of Nepal and Denmark. But I didn’t come to talk about them. My subject is the heir and Director of the hotel, Dr Siripattra Kusuwan Naranong, arguably, one of the most educated and internationally-experienced Thai executives on the island. With a Bachelor, Master’s and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, England, topped with five years working experience with leading global management consultancy firm McKinsey & Company, Dr Siripattra, or as her family and friends call her “Gift”, now wears an important hat with her family’s business. She is the Director of The Pearl Group of companies – which comprises both the Pearl Hotel and Indigo Pearl resort in Nai Yang, as well as all the Toyota dealerships on the island. And in addition to this, is in charge of several key land banks across the island. And yet, for someone of such stature, she is quite humble, outgoing and easy to talk to, not unlike her famous uncle, Khun Wichit Na-ranong, who has the same distinctive, russet-coloured eyes.
Roots
Phuket is in a perpetual state of flux, having undergone its last major economic transformation only several decades ago. With the wane of the century-old era of tin-mining came the dawn of the present age of tourism, the lifeblood of which tens of thousands depend on to this day. Credited with propelling if not
An advertisement for the Pearl Cinema in the 1970s. catalyzing that shift is Dr Siripattra’s beloved uncle, Khun Wichit, who is the grandson of Khunlerd Pokharak, a Chinese immigrant-turned-tin-miner who built his Phuket fortune from little more than the classic values of hard work, saving, and intuitive investing. Perpetuating Khunlerd’s legacy, it was Wichit who tirelessly lobbied for the Thai government to realize the value and thus invest in tourism, and who was subsequently nicknamed ‘The Father of Phuket Tourism’.
Landmark
A major benchmark for Phuket's budding tourism industry was reached in 1976 – around five years prior to Thai Airways launching its inaugural flight to Phuket from Bangkok – when Wichit opened the Pearl Hotel, which to this day is still a major landmark on Montri Rd, in the old heart of Phuket Town, one of half-a-dozen structures in Phuket municipality's infant cityscape. Gift notes that the hotel was the second major commercial establishment built in the Pearl Complex, following the opening in 1971 of the island’s first and only movie theatre (initiated by Khunlerd at the site of the Trick Eye Museum today) and was built simultaneously with several shop-houses and the adjacent former Pearl bowling alley.
Early Years
Born in Bangkok and schooled initially in Phuket – at Dara Samut and Satree Phuket schools – Gift recalled her childhood in Phuket, when in the mid to late 1980s, and early 1990s, the Pearl Hotel complex was the centre of the island’s thephuketnews

Gift and her brother are in the middle. entertainment and business scene. “At the time, my family lived in a house on [the historical] Thalang Rd., close to the hotel. I used to come to the hotel everyday after school, for swimming and piano lessons. … I spent a lot of time there. They fed me a lot. I had four meals a day,” she laughs. In addition to movies, the theater also staged small concerts. One of Gift’s fondest memories was when she was singing along with the popular children's musical group “Nok Lae”. Phuket’s entertainment and business scene continued to expand. “Before Central Festival opened [in 2004], the area around the Pearl complex was always happening and there were a lot of new shops opening up all the time ... When I was about 10, Ocean Time Square [in the area of Robinson's Department Store today and later rebranded as the Ocean Shopping Mall in 1997] opened, which further contributed to the boom of the area.” But the Na-ranong clan knew they would have to continue to diversify their business, realizing that demand and activity was starting expand to other parts of the island.
Modern retail
It was clear that the chain retail business model would be the way “forward” for Thai consumerism. The trend of new franchises and chain businesses had exploded in the kingdom, initially in Bangkok and then pouring over into the provinces, inevitably penetrating Phuket. “My family knew that the beach was the next big thing. My uncle opened the Pearl Village Resort in Nai Yang [the predescor of Indigo Pearl Resort Phuket] in 1986.” Meanwhile, Phuket Town continued to spread west and south, the municipality rapidly approaching city status (which it would eventually attain in
2004 when its official population exceeded 50,000). “A new chain movie theater opened in the Ocean Shopping Mall, and we leased out our movie theater to a private entertainment company.” The once quiet town was attracting more investors, from Bangkok and abroad, with new hotels and establishments popping up, not only in town, but island-wide. Aside from anticipating where the market was heading, just as important was knowing what the market needed. “My family had known and seen the value of English language and the role it would play in Phuket’s future. My generation was encouraged to study abroad. In 1991, my older brother, Geng, left for boarding school, at Georgetown Prep School in Maryland, USA.”
Blossom Abroad
At the age of 13, Gift also left Thailand to study abroad, enrolling at the prestigious Headington School in Oxford, England. And though an overseas education was encouraged, she insists that the decision was by her own initiation. “After visiting my brother a few times in the US, I told my parents that I wanted to go abroad too ... I loved studying a lot. In Thailand at the time, it became clear that I would have to choose my course of study from early on, to focus on either language or science and math.” But Gift wanted to focus on both Science and English – and the Western education system provided more opportunity, and independence, for such a curious mind. After visiting schools in the US and England, her family opted on the latter, as the “lifestyle and teaching method were more similar to Thailand.” For the next 12 years of her life, she lived and studied in Oxford, England making the visit home to Thailand –

Bangkok and Phuket – two to three times a year, witnessing gradual changes in her hometown with each visit. After culminating her formal education in 2006, concluding her doctoral dissertation with a research project on HIV Immunology, it was time for a new chapter in life. “I’ve always loved science, but I realized that a career as a researcher would be difficult here in Thailand, with the complications in securing funding and so forth.”
Homecoming
Upon returning to Thailand in 2007, Dr Siripattra applied and was accepted into McKinsey & Company, one of the largest global management consultancy firms. The next five years would prove to be one of the busiest chapters in her life. Based in Bangkok, she traveled frequently, consulting top executives of global companies in various projects and industries throughout Asia – banking, energy, aviation, pharmaceutical, telecom and retail, among them. With a strong background in science and a good business sense, the transition into the business world proved to be smooth. “In business you have to use a lot of maths, problem solving and analytical thinking. I didn’t find it too difficult of a transition also because I grew up seeing the running of all the businesses by my family,” she says, adding that she still reads scientific journals, and keeps in touch with alumni and friends from Oxford. After such an uphill climb in the fast lane, Dr Siripattra felt it was time to settle down, and returned to Phuket in 2012 to answer her calling in the family business. Soon after her homecoming, she married Khun Pawin Suthapong, a US-educated hi-tech entrepreneur, and formally
took the reigns of the family-run hotel and land business.
Back to business
Phuket is perpetually in a state of flux. As an intuitive business leader – like her parents and uncles – Gift understands well the importance of paying attention to the signs ... to the trends, which may provide some valuable hints on the future. And though Phuket's center in the last decade has expanded much, in all directions, the traditional heart of the once-town-now-city looks to be on its own revival path. Many signs suggest this. The Old Town historic district is as popular as ever among both domestic and international tourists; a number of new 10- to 15-storey developments are breaking ground or on the cards, while concrete remnants of decades past are being lined up for restoration and renovation, if not removal – and not to mention, the latest proposal to bring the Airport-Chalong mass-transit system straight through Old Town, also looks promising.
Face of change
Understanding the current trajectory of change, and inspired by her uncle Wichit’s strategic renovation and rebranding of the Indigo Pearl in 2006, Gift is now initiating her own revamp of the 38-year-old Pearl Hotel. “We’re not rebranding. The Pearl Hotel brand is already very strong. We're just going to give it a face-lift. We’ll maintain the original concept and the elegant finishings and decoration for which it’s famous.” Indeed, while the skyline of Phuket city continues its transformation apace with the 21st Century, the Pearl Hotel’s place and position as a key landmark has long-been cemented, not only in the memories of decades’ past, but surely in decades to come.
The Pearl Hotel will remain a popular landmark on Phuket’s skyline for decades to come.

Robots inspired by origami can fold selves, walk away
I
t starts out laying flat, like a sheet of paper. Then it springs up, almost lifelike, and folds into moveable parts much like origami art. And then it crawls away. This new kind of robot could someday be used in space exploration, to slide into collapse sites to aid search and rescue, or to speed up manufacturing on assembly lines, experts said last week. While this particular machine’s march to the world market is still years away, the report in the journal Science said the latest advances open the way to a new frontier in personalized robotics. Not only is the material cheap – it cost just US$100 (B3,000) – it could be easily reprogrammed from one task to another, said Sam Felton, a researcher at Harvard
University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “In the same way that if you have a Word document and you want to change few words, you just reprint it at your home computer, you could take a robot’s digital plan, change a few things and reprint it,” Felton told reporters. The thin robot is built of layers, including paper, a middle layer of copper etched into a network of electrical leads, and an outer layer of shape-memory polymer that folds when heated. Once the batteries and motor are activated, the robot folds itself much like a child’s Transformer toy, and scuttles away like a crab. Felton said the total start-up costs for equipment used to make the robot were
around US$11,000 (B353,000). The origami machine itself cost US$80 (B2,400) for batteries and motor, and US$20 (B600) for materials. “If we were to build a new one it would cost another US$100,” he said. The team hopes that commercial uses for the robots will grow in the years to come. In the meantime, its early tasks and functions may be incremental in nature. “Since we are an academic lab, we try and come up with the most interesting and challenging problems, not necessarily the most practical,” said Felton. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Research at Harvard, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. AFP
Facebook splits messenger
Users of the Facebook app will have to download a separate app to use the social media giant’s messenger service. The split, which took place last week, forces users to over to the Facebook Messenger app to chat back-and-forth between friends. The company recently closed down its messenger service through the simple Facebook app in order to make the split permanent. CEO Mark Zuckerberg the move was made to help figure out how to monetise the messenger service, though he admits they are still in the planning stages.

Funnyman Robin Williams gave comedy a darker edge
O
scar-winning actor Robin Williams shot to fame for his madcap standup act and his offbeat alien Mork, but his most famous roles showed a depth of pain behind the comedian’s mask. The wildly popular 63-year-old funnyman, whose career spanned more than three decades, was known for rapid-fire, streamof-consciousness improvisations and impersonations. On screen, his characters were often offbeat and eccentric – from the zany alien Mork from the planet Ork, the television role in the 1970s that first catapulted him to fame, to the divorced dad who transforms himself into a elderly British nanny in Mrs Doubtfire. His skill at imitating voices was often showcased, as in his portrayal of the genie in Disney’s Aladdin. But he also found success in darker roles, including an Oscar-winning turn as psychologist Sean Maguire, a Vietnam veteran and widower in Good Will Hunting. But for all Williams’ Hollywood success and outsize public persona, the comedian faced private demons, including recurring battles with drugs, alcohol and mental illness. He quit drinking and cocaine in the early 1980s, when his first son was born, but after 20 years sober, he started drinking again while filming in Alaska in 2003. “It was that thing of working so much, and going ‘Fuck, maybe (drinking) will help?’ And it was the worst thing in the world,” he said, adding, however, he did not start taking drugs again. It took him another three years to get back to sobriety, after a family intervention led him to rehab, he said, blaming his drinking for the breakup in 2008 of his 19-year-second marriage. It was health problems – and open heart surgery – in 2009 that he credits with being the true turning point. “It breaks through your barrier, you’ve literally cracked the armor. And you’ve got no choice, it literally breaks you open. And you feel really mortal,” he said. The actor was also reportedly diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and in July, 2014, he checked into a Minnesota rehab facility for help maintaining sobriety after a grueling year-and-a-half of work. One of Williams’ most famous roles was as radio disk jockey Adrian Cronauer, whose loud and drawn out
“Gooooooood morning, Vietnaaaaaam” started each broadcast and was the title of the film. The character bucks authority on the air, bringing US troops the 1960s rock music and lifestyle they missed from home, playing unapproved songs and riffing in quick-fire improvisations in between. And even his more light-hearted films touch on deeper sadness, including slapstick Mrs Doubtfire, the crossdressing character created by divorced
dad Daniel Hillard in desperation to see his kids, who were living with a wife who sees him as irresponsible. Williams was beloved as inspirational prep-school teacher John Keating, in the Dead Poets Society, another character that defied authority with an unorthodox teaching style that ultimately gets him fired. But Williams left behind his darker side in films for children, including kids’ romp Jumanji, about a boardgame that comes to life. AFP

Soi Dog to host first ever mobile adoptions for puppies, kittens
O
n Saturday (August 23) Soi Dog Foundation will be holding its first ever Puppy and Kitten Mobile Adoptions Event at Central Festival Phuket. Soi Dog plan to hold monthly adoption events around the island to reach out to more of the Phuket community, especially to those who reside in the south of the island. Currently, the foundation shelters and cares for nearly 400 dogs and dozens of cats, all of whom desperately need loving homes. At Saturday's event, there will be puppies and kittens for the whole family to meet, as well as Soi Dog merchandise for sale and the staff members on hand to answer any questions regarding adoptions or the foundation. The adoption team will be on hand to assist with
puppy and kitten adoptions and available to chat with any prospective adopters to ensure that all the animals go to good homes. Soi Dog does not charge any adoption fee. All the puppies and kittens are free to good homes. “We always get great support from the people of Phuket so we hope to see as many as possible on the day. Adopting a Soi dog or cat means you give them that second chance to live a happy life in their forever home,” said Cristy Baker, Adoptions Manager at Soi Dog Foundation. The event, which will be held in the open-air courtyard area near Wine Connection, starts at 11am and finishes around 4pm. For further details and inquiries, please contact cristy@soidog.org for more details or call 093 685 1332.
Breed of the month: Thai Bang Kaew Jackie Perry jackieperry991@gmail.com
T
he Bangkaew is an old breed that originated from the Bangkaew village in Thanang-Ngam area in the Bang-Rakam district of Phitsanulok province in Thailand’s North. The breed traces its ancestry back to a cross between a Buddhist abbot’s local black and white female dog and a now extinct wild dog producing the breed’s early prototypes. In 1957, selective breeding from single litters produced the generation as seen today. The Thai Bangkaew dog is regarded as a precious heritage of Phitsanulok Province. The dogs are bred widely in the Province and have become so famous nationwide that they now are bred in every part of Thailand. They are now also being exported to countries around the world and are becoming very popular in the show-rings, especially in Europe. In general appearance, the Bangkaew is a squarebuilt, well-proportioned dog, never low on legs, with a fairly wide and deep chest. T he he ad i s we d ge
Loyal, watchful and obedient. shaped and strong, fairly broad but never coarse. The nose should be black. Eyes are medium sized and almond shaped. Colour should be black or dark brown. The ears are small in proportion to the head and set high but not too close together. Triangular shaped with tips lightly pointed, erect and pointing forward. The neck is strong, muscular and blends smoothly into the shoulders with a proud carriage. The back, when viewed in profile, should be straight and level, croup slightly sloping. The chest should be fairly broad with brisket extending down to the elbows. Ribs well sprung but never barrel shaped. The tail is moderately long, well-feathered, thick at the base and tapering into an upwards curve. The coat is a double one,
harsh on the top and soft underneath. Moderately long on the body with longer hair forming a ruff around the neck and shoulders. This is more prominent on the male than the female. The back of its forelegs covered with long hair down to the wrists, while hindlegs are well furnished with plentiful hair around the backside and right down to the hocks (knees). Colour is always white background with patches of lemon, red, fawn or grey, but also can be white with solid black patches. The breed is very much a family dog and is an excellent guard. Care must be taken however with strangers approaching in the home as they are a highly suspicious and a strong guarding breed. Grooming is fairly minimal with a good brushing once a day keeping their lovely coats in good shape. Clipping of claws will keep their feet looking good and tight. When exercising, this should be done with care as strangers may try to pat and praise but your Bangkaew being a very private sort of dog may not be too happy about this until he has been properly introduced. thephuketnews

Thailand, Australia football teams prep for Asian Games in Phuket FOOTBALL Steven Layne editor3@classactmedia.co.th
F
our national teams of the Asian Football Confederation – Thailand, Australia, Myanmar and Qatar – are set to visit Phuket later this month, and early September, to play a round of friendly international matches in preparation for the 17th Asian Games. Also known as the Asiad, the competition is one of the world’s largest continental sporting events and will
take place in Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4. All four warm-up matches, to be played at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town: August 30 – 4:30pm Thailand vs Myanmar September 3 – 6:00pm Thailand vs Qatar September 7 – 4pm Thailand vs Phuket mixed team September 7 – 6:30pm Qatar vs Australia The Phuket News caught up with Football Association of Thailand president and FIFA executive committee member, Worawit Makudi last
week to discuss the decision to stage the matches in Phuket “Firstly, we have good connections and relationships here in Phuket [with Phuket FC, local government and the Sports Authority office]. Moreover, Phuket is an ideal place with outstanding facilities. “The [Surakul] stadium is a great pitch to play on and train as is the British International School Phuket. We need good facilities for our preparation” he said, adding that the Thai National Squad will train at both Surakul Stadium and BISP during their week-long stay on the island.
Phuket United finish Chiang Mai’s Lanna Tigers pounce on Phuket FC season in fourth place FOOTBALL FUTSAL
Steven Layne editor3@classactmedia.co.th
J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
DESPITE OUTSCORING their opponents 15 goals to six in their final three matches, the island’s professional fivea-side squad, Phuket United, finished 4th place on the final weekend of the Futsal Thailand Premier League 2014 season. After winning 6-2 in their final home game on August 3 against Khon Kaen, United were still in the hunt for the 2nd place spot on the table along with both Thai Port and Siam Navy. Un i t e d b a c k sl a p p e d Suphanburi on August 6 in an 8-2 victory, giving the team three vital points (total of 60 points) on their way to the final showdown against Thai Port just four days later. With both Siam Navy (63 points) and Thai Port (62 points) still in charge, United needed a win in the worst way in order to leapfrog both teams to claim 2nd place (Chonburi Blue Wave had long-secured the top spot and finished the season with 85 points).
@thephuketnews
Phuket came into the game at full strength with the second highest goal differential in the league (+57) and were sure to win a tie-breaker with Navy if both teams had the same number of points. Still, Thai Port woke up in front of their home crowd and defeated Phuket United 2-1 in a low-scoring affair. With the win, Thai Port secured 2nd place, while Siam Navy finished 3rd, and Phuket 4th. The finish is still one spot higher than Phuket finished last year (5th in the standings) their first time in the FTPL. Class Act Media is a proud media partner of Phuket United.
PHUKET FC DROPPED ONE spot, into 13th place of the 18-team Yamaha League-1, following a 1-0 defeat to Chiangmai FC last Saturday (August 9) at Surakul Stadium. Both sides fought tooth and nail for the result, with boomerang like play keeping the crowd of some 3,000 spectators – 100 or so having travelled 30-hours on a bus from the northern Thai provincial capital – on their toes. Playing without Phuket
captain Wasan Natasan who was suspended for an alleged slapping incident during the last home match against BBCU, it was the visitors whose efforts yielded a goal, when in the 76th minute, Rungrat Phumjuntuek scored
the match’s only goal. The win gave the Lanna Tigers 40 points after 25 matches in the 34-fixture season, elevating them one spot into 5th place. Phuket have lost their last four matches at home
– three league matches and one friendly, and now with 31 points, the Ronins are only six points ahead of 15th place Nakhon Pathom, the last of four relegation spots. Asked about his club’s two upcoming matches – against Nakhon Pathom United away (August 16) and 1st placed Nakhon Ratchasma FC at home (August 24) – Phuket FC Head Coach Reuther Moreira said, “I’m not afraid of any team. We’ve got a good team and we will do our best to prepare for our opponents ... Our goal now is to not get relegated and stay in the League One, so we’re going to train hard.”

Bondi Bar Bashers win Tristan Sheridan Memorial Cup in thriller CRICKET Rashmi Chandwaskar editor2@classactmedia.co
A
tough Thalang Cricket Team were not enough to end Bondi Bar Bashers winning ways as the Tri-B’s won the annual Tristan Sheridan Memorial Cup in thrilling fashion last Sunday (August 3) to stay atop the Outrigger T20 League . The win gave the Bondi Bar Bashers two wins over 2nd place Thalang this season and extended their streak to five wins. Bondi Bar Bashers decided to bat first but Thalang took first blood with the early scalp of captain SeemantRaju in the second over. Fellow opening batsman Imtiyaz Mushtaq held the innings together, while wickets kept falling in quick succession at the other end. Credit to the TCT fielders for not missing a catch that came their way, apart from a valiant effort on the boundary by Barrie Buck.
(Top) Thalang chasing 138. Photo: Michael Way. (Bottom) Bondi Bar Basher’s Pir Sami on the attack. Photo: Neil Quail
Still, Mushtaq reached his fifth half century of the season before losing his wicket
on 58, with the score on 100. Pir Sami entered the fray for the Tri-B’s and a late flourish
with the bat, scoring 40 off 20 balls, boosted the total up to 137; a low score considering the batting fire power of the TCT line-up. TCT, meanwhile, got off to a good start with Justin Thomatos and Andrew McMillan forming the backbone of their batting. Thomatos eventually fell to the pace of Sam. Simon Weatherell was next to the crease and, with runs being picked up regularly, looked like being a long day in the hot sun for all. Consistent bowling from Mohnish Chandwaskar was rewarded
with Weatherell’s wicket (13) and the removal of his middle stump. Sudden ly, TCT were reeling, but the comforting presence of McMillan in the middle remained. The TCT batsmen were thwarted by the bowling of Paddy Morton, Chandwaskar, Raju and Sami. In walked the big-hitting Roshan Jayasuriya (17) – playing his last match in Phuket – and tried to smash his way into double figures, but he could not sustain for long before coming undone by the
leg-spin of Morton. TCT skipper Craig Murphy joined McMillan for the final two overs, with 18 runs left for victory and a grandstand finish in the making. The TriB’s nerves held, however, and Murphy was run out on the last ball of the game just two runs short of the total. Since 2012, the game between the Tri-B’s and TCT is also played as the Tristan Sheridan Memorial Cup in honour of a member who was tragically lost his life. This was the first time the Tri-B’s won the Tristan Sheridan Memorial Cup after two seasons. Next match takes place Sunday (August 17) at the Alan Cooke Ground in Thalang with Laguna vs ICC at 10am and the Village vs Bondi Bar Bashers at 2pm If anyone is interested in getting involved with cricket in Phuket, please email the Phuket Cricket Group Chairman at chairman@phuketcricketgroup.com, or visit www.phuketcricketgroup.com for more information.

Training the mind SUPERKIDZ Brooke Langereis TSLC@thanyapura.com
T
he main thing to remember and think about when you are competing in any event, is to keep a positive outlook on your result and how your race is going to pan out. Your mind is what is going to get you across the line as well as your body, but your mind is the part of your body which decides for you to slow down or stop! The mind is very powerful so you can’t let it be your demon. You also should not be thinking about anyone else other than yourself, as YOU are your biggest competitor, and YOU want to get a personal best (PB) for yourself. Thinking about what training other people have done previous to the event, or the times they have run and swam, should not be your issue. You will know how much effort, time and training you have put in, which will or will not show in your performance on race day.

The mother of two saved her attack for the last of the 25 laps in the women’s 10,000m final and pulled clear in the straight to win in 32 mins 32.39sec, with French duo
Clemence Calvin (32.23.58) and Laila Traby (32.26.03) taking silver and bronze. Pavey eclipsed Irina Khaborova as the oldest ever female gold medallist. The Russian was 40 years and 27 days when she won gold in 1994.
Pavey, who gave birth to her second child last September, is 40 years and 325 days. “It’s just unbelievable,” said Pavey, whose first major championships was the 1997 world outdoor championships, “I just gritted my teeth when we came to the bell and went for it.” Pavey produced a similarly gritty run to claim a 5,000m bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on August 2 and was bidding for her second medal over 10,000m at the European Championships. ORGANISERS OF THE Full Metal Dojo event at Seduction Nightclub in Patong have been busy building a solid fight card for the promotion’s second event on August 23. FMD 2: Protect Your Neck will feature a co-main event bout that pits Afghani Baz Mohammad Mubariz (3-2) against “Creepy” Kristoffer Persson (2-3) of Sweden. Thailand MMA fighter Supat “Nut” Senapol will fight FMD veteran Chatmongkhon “Noom” Simma while Detchadin Phetsingkorn will take on Japanese fighter Takuro.
Michael Dubois, who took his debut MMA fight on 24 hours notice in the last FMD event on June 7, will also be on the card. The FrenchCanadian’s high-level judo helped him throw around his more-experienced opponent, Glenn Sparv, before succumbing to a TKO stoppage at the end of the first round. In addition, the card includes the first ever Thai versus Thai female MMA bout when Suwaman “Pocket Rocket” Boonsorn (Amp) takes on Kaewjai Prachumwong. Tickets start at B1,000 and are available at Seduction Nightclub on Bangla Rd, all Fight Lab sports retail locations, and the Full Metal Dojo Facebook Page.

Predators circle Man City in English Premier League FOOTBALL
W
ith Manchester United resurgent and big-name signings at Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, Manchester City will face a battle to hold onto their Premier League crown in the 2014-15 season. Liverpool’s late-season collapse enabled City to power to the title in May, but the campaign that gets under way on Saturday (August 16) will look very different to the one that preceded it. Luis Suarez, last season’s outstanding player and top goalscorer, has left Liverpool for Barcelona. The loss of Suarez was a bitter blow, but Liverpool now looks betterequipped for the twin rigours of domestic and European football thanks to a £90 million splurge partly financed by the Uruguayan’s sale. Meanwhile, after a wretched season, United have a new manager at the helm in the straight-talking Louis

van Gaal, who quickly won over fans during a successful pre-season tour of the United States. Didier Drogba is back at Chelsea. Cesc Fabregas is back in the Premier League, at Chelsea rather than former club Arsenal. Frank Lampard, who left Chelsea last season, is now a Manchester City player. Arsenal, meanwhile, will start the season with three World Cup-winners in their ranks and having pulled off another transfer coup with a
£30 million swoop for Chile forward Alexis Sanchez. His arrival should give Arsenal greater cutting edge and last season’s FA Cup success means that they must no longer bear the burden of a nine-year trophy drought. “It will be interesting to watch, the Premier League, because it looks like the big teams will all be very strong,” predicted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. City have signed six new players, but it was not until
Monday (August 11), when the £32 million capture of French centre-back Eliaquim Mangala from Porto was finally confirmed, that they truly flexed their muscles. With key players such as Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero short of fitness after taking time off after the World Cup, Manuel Pellegrini’s side are unlikely to be firing on all cylinders for some time. “Five or six teams have the chance to win, but we have a stronger squad than last year,” said Pellegrini. Chelsea seem likely to provide the strongest threat to City, with manager Jose Mourinho having bolstered every position. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois returns from his long-term loan at Atletico Madrid to challenge Petr Cech for the number-one jersey, while Filipe Luis, Fabregas, £32 million striker Diego Costa and Drogba all add quality and experience. United have also invested heavily, signing Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera for a combined fee of around £60 million, but Van Gaal is likely to prove their most important acquisition. the Netherlands to the World Cup semi-finals, the 63-yearold Dutchman blew into the club like a whirlwind and his new 3-4-1-2 system yielded instant results on the tour of the US. The money lavished on new players by the leading sides means it will be even more difficult for clubs like Everton and Tottenham Hotspur to close the gap on the division’s elite. Tottenham will hope that new coach Mauricio Pochettino can work some of the magic that saw Southampton achieve a surprise eighth-place finish under his stewardship last season. It is an achievement the

Pochettino was succeeded at Southampton by former Netherlands defender Ronald Koeman, while West Bromwich Albion also have a new head coach in former Everton academy manager Alan Irvine. Of the promoted teams, although it was Leicester City who romped to the Championship title ahead of Burnley last season, play-off victors Queens Park Rangers perhaps look best-equipped for survival. EPL Masters taken down by Thailand Legends 4-3 FOOTBALL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
even goals marked the match between former English Premier League Legends and ex-superstars of the Thailand national team last Sunday night (August 10) at Surakul Stadium. Just over 5,000 fans looked on as former Liverpool great Robbie Fowler, ex-Manchester United striker Louis Saha, as well as World Cup players Des Walker and Paul Parker took part in the Emerald EPL Masters Tour Phuket 2014. In addition, a litany of other former EPL stars graced the
S
field, including: Lee Sharpe (Manchester United), Lee Hendrie (Aston Villa), David Hirst (Sheffield Wednesday), Regi Blinker (Sheffield Wednesday), Keith Gillespie (Blackburn Rovers), John Beresford (Newcastle) and Darren Anderton (Tottenham). Piyapong Pue-On – considered one of Thailands greatest players ever – managed the squad of Thailand Legends
which included Kiatisuk “Zico” Senamuang and even Phuket FC captain Wasan Natasan, who scored the game’s first goal early in the first half. Fowler evened things out with a penalty shot in the middle of the first half. Saha, who trucked along with a strong burst and showcased the skills that made him a feared French international, contributed a goal of his own
with a beautiful strike from the right flank. But it was all Thailand after that as the hosts scored three straight to take back the lead 4-2. Former Aston Villa great Lee Hendrie would score the game’s final goal with just 10 minutes left in the match but it was too late as the Thailand Legends waltzed their way to a victory under the floodlights of Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town. The match was the culmination of four-day of pregame festivities that included several meet-and-greets and youth football clinics throughout the island. Class Act Media is a proud media partner.
