A

n arrest warrant has been issued for Manit Saodee, driver of the double-decker tour bus that crashed on Patong Hill on Saturday (November 9), with 38 of the 50 passengers being taken to hospital with a variety of injuries. The bus was one of four carrying exchange students from the Asian

Institute of Technology in Bangkok for a leisure trip. The students were mainly from India, Nepal, Myanmar and Malaysia, with some Thais. The crash took place around 2pm. A witness told The Phuket News it appears the bus wasn’t able to make it up the steep curve, slid back down and then crashed backwards off the

road into a ditch. On Wednesday Pol Capt Vittaya Sanjamruen told The Phuket News that a warrant had been issued for the arrest of Manit, who fled the scene of the crash and has not been seen since. After the bus was checked, he explained, it was found that all equipment was functioning effectively,

which meant the cause of the accident was human error. “He changed gear in the middle of the bend,” Capt Vittaya said. “This was on a steep hill with a fully loaded bus, so he lost control.” It is thought Manit may have panicked because he did not brake before the bus crashed.
